Rose fires her spell which hits the retreating shadow heading southeast. The shadow takes the blows in stride. (Hits shadow A for 8 HP damage)

Dietrich's arrow strikes the same shadow, staggering him. (Hits shadow A for 10 HP damage)

Berlon tries to determine whether the enemies are undead or not. He decides he'll need to get a bit closer. He figures he might as well shoot at them. His bolt flies wide.

Vauhwyt decides to wait at the door. Allow the baddies to come to her.

Vorelle produces her axes and waits beside the liontaur.

Theodore serves as the rearguard.

The three Dirt City boys draw their weapons. "What are our orders?"

The wounded shadow (shadow A) enters the southern bookcase (incorporal). Dietrich's arrow is ripped from the shadow's form. You hear a terrible shriek from the bookcase.

The shadow heading northwest (shadow B) enters the northern bookcase. The last shadow, heading northeast (shadow C) disappears behind the northern bookcase.

He starts moving forward, hopefully with his friends at his side, blade ready to strike.
It should be something like that: He, Vauhwyt, Vorelle and BErlon at the front. Rose, Theo, Olyn, Oni after, ready to do some magic.

To the youths, he orders to keep rearguard for the moment.

clarifying the idea:
DIetrich would like for the group to proceed in line (the four "fighters" in front, than the potencial casters), covering the whole room, from left to right.
There shouldn´t be any possibility for shadows to come from behind, as they´d have to pass through this line.

Dietrich takes the initiative and tries to push the party forward into the room. He takes two steps in, looks back and notices that only Vorelle is following.

Rose and Vauwhyt remain at the door, waiting for the enemy to come to them. Theodore simply can't get by everyone else in front of him. The Dirt City boys wait in the back, serving as the rearguard. Everyone else isn't responsive.

You see no other movement from inside the room. What could they be up to?

Staying in a defensive position (combat expertise +4 ac, -4 to hit), but ready to attack with his blade, Dietrich says to his friends:

"Come on guys! They´re not going to attack us by themselves. We´ll have to force them into attacking our line by squeazing them.

Vauhwyt, Berlon, close in formation before Vorelle and I are attacked and flanked.

Also, if any of you has area spells that could help? More light? Something against unnatural, evil things?"

The warrior also looks at Olyn and Oni, not understanding why the two sacred men don´t move.

He lets the heavy hitters venture into the room first and then follows, keeping his eyes peeled for the shadows. (Spot 9)

Dietrich pauses and urges the group forward into the room. He also asks if the magic users can assist with some light or detrimental magic against the enemies. Theodore sarcastically offers to provide a little too much light.

Vauhwyt hustles forward to the front with Vorelle and Dietrich, spear at the ready.

Rose moves with Vauhwyt. Due to the lull in action, she decides to look at the southern bookcase. She sees nothing interesting at first glance, save for Dietrich's spent arrow laying on the floor.

Theodore follows and looks about, ready to act.

Everyone else, remains in the hall, serving as a guard against rear assaults.

The warrior overhears Theo´s comment and is more worried about the apparent apathy of the clerics, of whom he hasn´t heard anything for quite a while now.

To Rose he says:
"Just wait a moment for the examination and keep focused and ready to cast. Those shadows are still in the room, somewhere in front of us."

Dietrich keeps the party moving. Having met no resistance in the southern part of the room, he directs them north towards the other bookcase where two of the shadows fled.

Rose attempts to look closer at the southern bookcase, but Dietrich admonishes her for not sticking on task.

Vorelle, Theodore, and Vauhwyt stay with the group as they move forward. As they come to the northern bookcase, two distorted, shadowy faces emerge from the books and lash out at Dietrich and Vorelle with long flickering claws.

Vorelle is too quick, ducking under the shadow's swing. Dietrich isn't so agile. He feels a cold, painful strike pierce his shoulder. (Hits Touch AC 24)

Dietrich Highlight to display spoiler: {You take 6 points of Strength damage}

The shadows are now visible, stretched out upon the northern bookcase, one next to the other.

Dietrich and Vorelle are face to face with the shadows, Rose and Vauhwyt directly behind them and Theodore behind them. There is about five feet on either side of the bookcase that someone might take position to strike at the shadows along with the front men.

All other allies wait at the entrance to the room, looking on.

"Do you need help?!" hollers Sharif into the room.

Dietrich feels a very strange weakness and cold and sighs biting his teeth.

The warrior continues in a defensive position though (-4 to hit +4 AC) and attacks with the great-sword. (Wardd´s amullett gives -1 this turn...)

LAST ROUND

Didn't Vauhwyt get her readied attack and her AoO? Maybe not the AoO, because the books would be in the way.

If she got her readied attack last round, then she hit AC17 for 5.

THIS ROUND

Vauhwyt readies another attack for if they come close. But this time her readied attack is with her spiked armor. It only has a five foot reach, but if they can hit us, she figures, then she should be able to hit them.

Readied Attack with armor spikes: hits AC22 for 8.

She also urges everyone to stay at least five feet away from the walls. However, since they could come up through the floor, that won't stop them. She also urges people to ready attacks so that we can hit as they pop out.

Theodore hollers in surprise when the shadows appear against the shelves. He directs his right finger towards the shadow attacking Dietrich and a white ray hurls towards the enemy.

Vorelle's axes pass through the shadow without damaging it. Though they take a nice chunk of wood from a shelf and send a book flying.

Rose pulls her sword and strikes true, staggering the shadow. (Hits shadow B for 10 HP damage)

Dietrich's knees tremble as his armor and sword suddenly feel much heavier. He takes a weak swing which does little damage against the shadow. (Hits shadow C for 2 HP damage)

Berlon calls on the might of his god. Shadow B explodes into sparkles of blackness from Berlon's power. The other shadow gives the gnome a snarl and returns his attention to the frontline fighters.

Vauwhyt was unable to attack because her friends are in the way. (Dietrich is between you and the shadow. You can move to his right to get at the shadow)

Theodore casts a spell at the last shadow, but the ray goes wide.

The last shadow lunges again for Dietrich, but the warrior is ready this time. The big warrior jukes out of the way, avoiding the attack.

Seeing that her axes are useless, Vorelle retreats a step, thus (possibly) allowing Vauhwyt to move forward. She sheathes her axes and draws her bow, hoping that, because it is magical, it will have a better chance of harming the shadowy things.

The gnome seems a little disappointed that he was only able to remove one of the creatures, and he winces at Dietrich's obviously weakened state. He will once more attempt to turn the undead.

Seeing Dietrich in jeopardy, Theodore casts a protective spell on his large friend. The frail wizard reaches forward and taps the warrior on his shoulder, muttering an arcane incantation.

Vorelle hangs her axes as she steps back and draws her bow, nocks an arrow, and fires at the shadow. Her shaft flies straight and true, pinning the shadow by his right shoulder to the bookshelf. (Hits shadow C for 10 HP damage)

Dietrich takes advantage and scores a blow with his own weapon. (Hits shadow C for 11 HP damage)

Berlon tries again to turn the shadow. He summons his god's might and directs it against the vile creature. But nothing. The shadow sneers at the gnome and turns his attention back to Dietrich.

Vauhwyt readies her attack against any enemy that gets close to her.

Theodore decides to give Dietrich some help and casts a protective spell on the frontline fighter.

The shadow lunges for Dietrich, but he ducks and the flickering claws pass just above his helmet.

The shadow takes another swing at Dietrich, but misses again. The undead is obviously growing weaker.

Vorelle pokes two more holes in the deader with her well placed arrows. (Hits shadow C for 9 & 6 HP damage)

Oni breaks out of his trance and rushes into the room looking for danger. He sees only the shadow in melee with his other friends.

Dietrich slips in another blow with his blade, ducking and weaving as he does so. (Hits shadow C for 6 HP damage)

Vauhwyt moves to the side of Dietrich and slams into the bookcase with her armor spikes. Unfortunately, the points don't seem to damage the creature.

Berlon is perplexed at his inability to effect the remaining shadow. He holds back and looks on the scene.

Theodore's magic strikes true, damaging the shadow as it struggles against the now overwhelming might of the party. (Hits shadow C for 4 HP damage)

Dietrich hollers a warning to Vauhwyt as she approaches the shadow before he takes another swing at the monster. The shadow manages to contort his body so the big man's sword takes a piece out of the bookcase instead of the undead. But suddenly, Rose is there and slips the shadow's guard to strike the final blow. The inkly black creature slips to the ground of the library, dissolving into a dark mist.

Looking about, you see no other immenent dangers. Dietrich appears to be the only one wounded, still suffering from the strength draining effects of the shadow.

There are some books and wood chips laying around the bookcase from missed strikes. Otherwise, everything seems to be the same as before you entered the library.

"Thanks Rose!"

Before Dietrich relaxes, he goes over the rest of the room looking out for more threats. There were 3 shadows and he´s not completely sure the first one has been destroyed.

He listens to his friends and wonders what Berlon means with the part about better preparation. It´d be certainly good if everybody had magical hand-to-hand weapons.
When the cleric says his wounds aren´t that serious, Dietrich frowns.

"I´m feeling like a wussy. Can´t even swing the blade right. Do you think this will pass soon? If nobody can do anything about it, our combat strenght will fall considerably."

Other than that, the knight suggests just a quick scan (like the one Vauhwyt is doing) over the room AND the books, to see if there maybe is anything interesting to solve the quest.

Finally, now would be a good time for Rose to have a closer look at things too. Maybe there´re secret doors and such.

Theodore smiles as Rose goes about collecting books. "Silly girl," he says to himself.

He doesn't feel too comfortable loitering in the library, despite the potential for gleaning new knowledge from the texts. After Vauhwyt's magical detections, he suggests moving back into the hall and into another room. He's also concerned about Dietrich's state, agreeing with his statement about their combat ability suffering. Getting the girl and getting out quickly is a good strategy.

Vauhwyt goes over the library with her detect magic spell before Rose stuffs everything into her bag. The liontaur zeroes in on three loose scrolls that she detects. They possess a light aura of magic.

There is some debate over Dietrich's wounds. Berlon wants to keep things moving as Rose goes about dropping books into her bag. Vorelle does a thorough inspection of Dietrich, but can't discover any conventional symptoms. Whatever is ailing the warrior, it's gonna take some magical healing to fix.

While he is being checked over, Dietrich suggests looking about for secret doors and more enemies. What happened to that shadow he stuck with an arrow?

Rose discovers no secret hidey holes or doors. She does notice a normal second door out of the library to the north of the door they had entered through. It also leads west, presumably to another room.

Back in the hall, Olyn and the three from Dirt City wait for the party's next movement.

There remains the door to the southeast of them, the path from the courtyard, and the stairs in the tower that continue upwards.

It appears the consensus is to open the other door in the library. Rose does a quick inspection. Finding nothing irregular, she pulls the door open to discover a 10' by 40' study. A single desk and chair has since rotted and collapsed to the floor, little more than kindling now. Otherwise, the room appears nondescript.

Rose and Vauhwyt check the door over for traps. Finding none, the halfling pushes the door in to reveal a large workroom (25' x 25'). The southern wall curves out with three windows looking out over the ocean. Two ten foot work tables dominate most of the room. Another door leads east out of the workroom.

The storm rages outside, now. Only the light from Rose's ribbons and a few candles on the tables cast light into the room. A tall shadowy figure turns slowly just as a particularly brilliant stroke of lightning illuminates the room. The creature before you now stands about six feet, with slimy pale grey skin. He sports a thin frame and an octopus-like head, complete with writhing tentacles. His eyes are bloated and white.

Just as quickly, the illumination is gone, and the illithid is once again in shadows.

"Who are you?" comes an alien voice.

Vauhwyt too is shocked to see the creature before the party. She pauses a moment to consider that it may be an illusion.

As she concentrates on that, Mookie caws, "What? Are the lot of you all cowards? Do I have to talk to this guy by myself?"

If it still seems real to Vauhwyt, then she tells her familiar to hush. "Quiet, Mookie."

She takes a half step forward. "We are the Friends of Fintan Finnliath, in his service and sworn to avenge the destruction of his ship, the murder of his person, and the abduction of his daughterr." The liontaur's faint accent -- not to mention the swishing of her tail -- denotes the seriousness with which she speaks.

"If you know anything about this, despite the long centuries that have passed -- then please speak what you know, and aid us in our quest."

She waits to see what the creature says. She readies her spear, so that if it approaches, she can hope for an attack and an AoO as it comes close.

Oni stares at the creature before him. The hair on his neck pricks, not a good sign. He can feel the rush of blood coursing. The heat, the warmth, the burning. Hearing the gnomes whisper of dread, only enhances the feeling. Alas, the rage is upon him.

As he moves toward the creature, his axe raises. The constant wagging of that tail, in the corner of his eye, makes him focus all the more. Even the general Dietrich is focused, and not at the attack.

It matters not. The rage has consumed his entire being. The centaur launches homself and his great axe at the thing in front of him.

Some stand back in fear, others remain silent and grip their weapons tighter, and some attempt to converse. Oni takes a more straightforward approach.

Hefting his axe, he charges forward. The illithid's eyes narrow and he steps back with his right foot and thrusts his left hand before himself in a dramatic pose.

(Seeing as combat has been initiated, I'll let everyone else post their actions before I apply Oni's attack.)

Although the attempt of talking with the enemy would probably have led to nothing, it was still worthwile... Maybe they could have got some information.

Vauhwyt yells at Oni, "Hey! It's not polite to attack when others are still talking!"

Mookie reaches into his bag of tricks and pulls out a fuzzy ball. He hurls it at the figure right next to Oni. It expands into a Wolverine, which then attacks the figure. One claw may have hit: it scratches AC17 for 5 hp damage.

Meanwhile, Vauhwyt has been casting a Reduce Person spell on herself. Arcane spell failure is no problem, this time. Vauhwyt shrinks to medium size, getting quicker, if weaker, in the process. But she has trained for quickness, and the net plus is a sweet +2 AC.

It also makes her tumble attempt more likely to work. After casting her spell, the mini-liontaur tumbles around the illithid so that she is on the other side of it from the wolverine and Oni. She ends her turn on the far side of it, hopefully. [Tumble Check is a 29.] She will attack next round, hopefully with a flanking bonus.

Theodore is flabbergasted by Oni's sudden charge.

Not again! he thinkgs to himself.

The wizard is now quite used to rash actions by his friends. He surprise is only momentary before he jumps to action stepping just inside the door and to the side to allow others forward.

He flips the cuffs of his tunic sleeves back and points his hands towards the illithid. Focusing his concentration fully on the mind flayer, Theodore prepares to counter any magical assault the stinker might call up.

Oni reaches the mind flayer first, his axe taking a nice chunk out of his left shoulder. (Crit misses. Hit mind flayer for 17 damage)

Dietrich rushes forward with his weapon, shoving the table the illithid's left out of the way. Beaker's and tubes of liquids crash to the floor and shatter as the big man takes a swing at the mind flayer. The illithid seems to have more protection than just his flimsy robes because the mighty blade is deflected just before biting into flesh.

Vauwhyt orders Mookie to toss another ball of fuzz at the enemy. A wolverine appears in the little space between Dietrich and Oni and slashes at the illithid but misses.

The liontaur quickly reduces in size and tumbles towards the battle. (Next round you can get behind the illithid, flanking with Oni and still attack)

Rose has Piper throw a fuzzball as well. This one also turns into a wolverine which quickly climbs upon the other table and snaps at the extended arm of the mind flayer, bringing back a bit of skin. (Hits mind flayer for 3 damage)

Berlon quickly loads his crossbow and keeps his aim steady enough to place a bolt just under the ribs of the illithid. (Hits mind flayer for 9 damage)

Theodore readies a counterspell.

Vorelle and Olyn stay at the door and prepare themselves for combat. The three from Dirt City muscle past the pair and draw their weapons, hungry for combat.

The mind flayer's tentacles shoot out and the air shimmers as if on fire. Those in it's path feel as if their brain might explode in their heads. (Oni, Theodore, Vorelle, Olyn, and three Dirt City boys make a Will save DC 18 with Charisma instead of Wisdom as your modifier. If you fail, you are stunned for 8 rounds. Mind flayer used mind blast)

Oni's brain is wracked with pain. The bloodlust overcomes the pain, and he is able to continue fighting.[Will save 19]

Raising on his rear legs, he comes down with his front hooves at the creature.

Vauhwyt tugs on a button (Seal) and activates it (free action): Goblin Seal of Stubbornness: +1 Will Save for next save if within 10 rounds.

Vauhwyt takes one last step closer to the Mind Flayer and flanks it.

She lashes out with her spiked gauntlet, her armor spikes, and two paws, hitting ACs 29, 18, 9, and 12. Both paws clearly miss. Her spiked gauntlet hits for 13, including sneak attack damage. Her armor spikes, if a strike vs DC18 is a hit, do 16 damage.

The Wolverine snaps at the monster. It hits ACs 19 (for 5) and AC18 (for 6).

Mookie takes out a scroll of Cure Light Wounds and readies the reading of it, triggered if Vauhwyt is hit. Mookie's Use Magic Device check: an 11 would not do it.

Berlon allows himself a slight smile as he is finally able to hit something with his admittedly weak aim. He isn't so happy when he sees the flayer's attack.

If anyone is stunned and falls, Berlon will use his full action to advance to and defend the victim.

Otherwise, he will once again shoot at the flayer, Heavy Crossbow attack hitting AC 20 for 5 damage.

The mind flayer's mental attack rocks Theodore to his knees. Gritting his teeth, he guts through the onslaught and muscles back to his feet. (Will save 9. Used Hero point to reroll for 20.)

"Take this you bastard!" Theodore hollers as four silvery bolts fly from his outstretched fingers, exploding into the illithid. (Cast magic missile for 16 damage)

Olyn, Sharif, Arngrim, and Leo collapse to the ground beneath the mind flayer's mental attacks. Berlon moves to stand before his fallen friends with a grim look upon his face.

Theodore staggers to his knees but rises back up with fire in his eyes.

The mind flayer lashes out at the raging Oni, connecting with two tentacles. (Hits Oni for 8 damage) The illithid attempts to grapple the centaur, but Oni jerks his head from side to side and rips free of his grip.

Full into his rage, Oni rears up and comes down with his hooves. The mind flayer throws his arm over his face and manages to avoid the centaur's cutting feet. (Not flanking at the moment) The angry Oni has more success with his axe, taking another chunk from the illithid's midsection, shearing his robes.

The mind flayer spits out a gob of thick green blood as Dietrich steps up to finish the job with a powerful blow to his spine. The force of the strike throws the bloody illithid forward against Oni's chest, where he slides slowly to the ground and is still. Green blood spills from his many wounds out across the floor, mixing with various fluids from the shattered beakers.

Vorelle was not stunned by the illithid's attack, but you wouldn't know it to watch her. The fight is over before she gathers enough of her wits to aim her bow.

She looks at the shattered remains of the illithid and the room. "I-I'm n-n-not sure that was a g-g-g-good idea," she says softly.

Oni barely winces at the attack. The feeling of his own blood only seems to fill his rage. As the snake headed creature slides off hisa body to the floor, Oni's eyes still flame. With the blood filled eyes he raises again on hind legs, coming down with both front hooves on the beast at his feet. His axe swings from above with terrible force, looking to cleave the body in two.

Although Dietrich is satisfied with his last blow, he couldn´t agree more with Vorelle.

He tries to calm the centaur down, touching his shoulder and saying:
"Calm down Oni, the ¨%#$¨%$ is dead. We have to search the body for clues and there wont´t be any if you smash it under your hooves."

The warrior also takes a quick look around.

Vauhwyt, standing right there, looks to see if the mind flayer is still alive, but dying. If there is any hope at all, the liontaur will take Mookie's CLW scroll and try to read it herself: UMD check 27 cures the creature 3 hp if it is not dead yet.

Berlon goes through a series of emotions very quickly. First, he seems a bit surprised that the creature goes down so quickly, but then cringes a bit as he sees the equipment getting smashed. "Try not to break anything else!" he yells.

He then seems concerned about healing. He attends to Oni's wounds, healing them with a deep red glow. (CLW heals 10 hp, rerolled 1, replacing Summon I)

He then sees Vauhwyt's own spell happen...

He check on his fallen friends to see if they are alive or not.

Oni continues his attack against the fallen mind flayer, stomping and chopping, stomping and chopping the creature into bloody bits. It's quite apparent the illithid can't be brought back by conventional means. It will take some mighty magical powers to reverse his situation.

Dietrich steps up to the centaur and claps a friendly hand to his shoulder, urging Oni to calm down and take stock of the situation.

Berlon steps up quickly and heals Oni of all his wounds, leaving only dried blood behind.

Theodore checks out his fallen friends, determing that they're all alive, just unable to move for the moment. A more able hand will be needed to determine more than that.

A quick look about the room shows no other immediate threats. All of the beakers and vials that were on the two tables are shattered from the battle and leaking on the table or the floor.

Oni sees all around him in a continual rush of blood. He feels the warming touch, recognizing it as magical healing. Somewhere in his mind he recognized it, but could not react to it. The enemy down, he needed more. More more more.

Shaking with the fury of countless generations of warriors, he turns and races out of the room, looking for something to unleash the rage on. Something, anything. Each door he passes he unleashes the axe, causing each to splinter.

It had been along, very long time since he had lost control to the blood. A voice, somewhere calls his name. Soothing, suttle, calming. The tensing, and pulsing of his muscles begin to slow. Thought, real thought begins to return.

Dropping his axe to the floor, heplaces his hands on his forlegs, and shakes. As if poison leaving his body, he trembles. All four legs are shaking. Druidic mantras roam and meander in his mind, creating a calming effect. As soon as he regained strength, he would need the outdoors, the trees to comfort him.

OOC I never played a barbarian before. so if you havent noticed, Oni is a barbarian/druid. I think I might go more Barb than druid. Dont know. I think the party needs another fighter type.

Dietrich is surprised and worried about Oni´s blood-rush and hopes the centaur could listen to Vauhwyt. Assessing the situation, the warrior is pretty sure the guy they´ve just hacked into pieces had precious information. How are we going to get them now?

The knight watches Oni´s continued rage in horror, as it reminds him of his own killer instincts, held down only by discipline and control aquired over years of Battle.

"You can´t let yourself go like that! This behaviour is not fit for warriors, it suits more a wild orc or a wolf! What if we just killed the only way out of this ¨%#¨%$ place and the %$#¨%$ ghost-ship?!"

OOC: I like the barbarian enphasis. The party realy needs a little more muscle. Although druidic magic is very interesting too.

The gnome keeps a safe distance as he waits for the barbarian's rage to calm before healing him. Once that is done, he wipes his brow and turns to Vauhwyt.

"What *are* you going on about?" He gestures towards the corpse. "We're not talking about a human or an elf or even a half-orc or anything else that is capable of free will. Those..." he waves at the corpse as he hesitates, "those THINGS are evil of the highest order. They ritually practice the eating of brains."

"But," he says turning towards those fallen by the illithid's attack, "Dietrich *is* right about shooting first and asking questions later. We do that far too much."

"Although," he adds as he tries to assess the best solution to the mind blast attack, "not in this case. It matters not if it is an illithid or a goblin or a demon god. Pure evil must be destroyed."
