DM George Monday January 15th, 2007 4:36:35 PM
The dark man takes the profferred gold and hefts it in his hand. He stows it inside his vest and says, "I guess some introductions should be in order. My name is Joe William. I am a hunter and occassional scout. I met your Kay when I took a deer near the farm with all of those kids. Had it hanging from a tree, dressing it out when she came along. She volunteered a nice homecooked meal if I turned over the deer to her and those kiddies. Since it was too much for me to eat, I agreed. She does make some good biscits. I stayed a couple of days and then wandered on. Did some more hunting and would share my kills with the orphans for some home cooked meals. Got to know some of them quite well. Shame them having no parents.
You asked about that other fella, I don't quite remember his name, seemed protective of Kay, almost like he had feelings for her. Bunky...Bootstrap...Buckle something like that.
Anyway, she wrote this note for you. You do know how to read right? I never got the hang of it. Personally don't see much use for it."
Joe William again reaches into his vest and pulls out a folded piece of paper which has been sealed with wax. Once Angus takes it, Joe will pull out a homemade pipe and start stuffing it full of tobacco waiting for Angus to read the note.
Lang & Sunshine d20=15 Monday January 15th, 2007 5:18:01 PM
Lang remains where he is and stays alert. He takes some of his attention off Angus and the man and looks around the Giggling Ghost for anyone else interested in the Shields.
Spot 21.
Xenia Monday January 15th, 2007 7:42:59 PM
The rogue sits down at last with an exaggerated *whew* of happy exertion. Her eyes roam over Wynn - seeing him without seeing the disguised bard.
Looks like gold has exchanged hands. Gold ... and paper ...
Despite her curiosity, Xenia continues with the charade.
Belkior d20+8=23 d20+7=10 Monday January 15th, 2007 9:24:51 PM
The halfling cleric continues to watch the conversation between Angus and the man at the bar. Belkior still can't quite catch the words being spoken and the note being passed took his attention away from the man's face. Listen = 23, Spot = 10
Wynn Monday January 15th, 2007 10:55:33 PM
The bard does his best to ignore Syr, and eventually kicks him under the table. "You're blowing my cover" he whispers. "That's what the disguise is for!!"
Wynn turns his attention to his beer and tries not to attract any more attention to himself.
Bin Tuesday January 16th, 2007 12:58:25 AM
Bin pulls out a sack of gold as well, to complete the transaction. He pulls out 25 gold pieces and holds them in his hand, waiting to see what Angus says.
Angus - Mage Armor Tuesday January 16th, 2007 8:20:54 AM
Angus listens to Joe's tale and is glad to hear the he has a kind heart when it comes to the kids. Angus takes the proffered note and breaks the seal "Thanks for your kindness to Kay and the kids. The man you met was Kay's friend, Buckle."
Angus will break the wax seal and read he note and then pass it to Bin. "Please read and pass on to the others."
Angus will take a moment to digest the contents of the letter.
Bin Tuesday January 16th, 2007 12:44:08 PM
Bin looks to Angus with a question on his face, but does as he is asked and reads the letter. He hands the 25 Gold Pieces to Joe with a word to Angus, "You shouldn't be expected to cover it all." He then walks over to those interested and sets it on the table before returning to the bar. "Hey Joe, how about I buy you a friendly drink for a tip?"
Syr Tuesday January 16th, 2007 1:05:20 PM
Syr looks sheepishly at Wynn and then pretends to ignore him.

DM George Tuesday January 16th, 2007 5:50:06 PM
Angus first reads the letter and hands it to the others. It says,
My Dearest Friends
It has been to long since your last visit. The children are doing well and the farmhouse is shaping up well. The first crops have been planted and they should do well if we get some more rain.
Unfortunately not all the news is good. We have gotten some new neighbors lately. Undesirable neighbors. Low born men and half orcs who have barged in on our land, bullied some of the children and have made me pay them what they call tribute.
I thought if I just paid them, they would go away but they keep returning and demanding more and more funds. I have been to the guard about them but since we are so far out in the country, they don't seem very concerned. I hate to again ask for your assistance but I am afraid for the children. If we don't pay, they have hinted at burning us out. I also don't like the way they are looking at some of the older girls. Please come as soon as you can.
My fondish regards
Kay
P.S. I am putting this letter in the hands of a hunter and aquaintance by the name of Joe William. He is a good man and I promised him you would pay him 50 gps to deliver the letter to you. The amount seems extreme but he seems to think if he is found out by this gang, he could be killed.
When Bin hands the second sack of gold, Joe William will take it and say, "I hope you can help those poor folk. Those damn orcs are hitting up half of the farms in the region for tribute."
Wynn Tuesday January 16th, 2007 8:26:10 PM
The bard maintains his distance and awaits any sign from Angus that the man should be followed. Barring that he will join the others at their table after the man has left.
Bin Tuesday January 16th, 2007 8:33:59 PM
Bin consults with the group, "I am ready to leave right now, if the rest of you are?"
Belkior Tuesday January 16th, 2007 9:07:04 PM
The halfling cleric checks the position of all of his supplies, ensuring that he is ready to travel.
"I'm ready to go right away, too. What will it take to get there? Through the portal and then hike out to the estate, a day tops?"
Xenia Tuesday January 16th, 2007 9:27:56 PM
With each word, the dark rogue's mouth opens wider and wider with shock, anger, and plain outright outrage.
"Didjyu read this!!!" She waves the note in the air at the Ponytail Guy. "Some Evil Fram Jambies just cry out to be smacked down!" Her gloved hand clenches into a fist, and with an angry gesture she shoves the note on so that Syr can read it. Xenia gets growly down in the throat, all pretense of drunk and happy whisked away on the winds of righteous indignation.
grrrrr ...
Then the rogue turns her face away from the man and mouths a few words in Wynn's direction. Follow him.
Lang & Sunshine Wednesday January 17th, 2007 9:03:26 AM
Lang reads the message and passes on to his fellow shields. He controls his anger for the time being, instead concentrating on the messenger to see his reaction to the Shields reaction to the letter.
Turning towards the group, Lang says, "I am ready to go right now."
Angus - Mage Armor Wednesday January 17th, 2007 9:08:23 AM
ANgus quickly get over his shock at teh contents of the letter. "I think it is time to visit the kids again."
Angus looks to Bin "Please check on the teleportation platform schedule so that we can get to the plateau city."
Angus then calls the Shields together "We have to get our affairs in order quickly so that we can go to the visit the plantation. Syr can you leave your business for a week or so? Do you think we should have someone check on our property while we are away or just lock it up tight? I think we should take the first teleportation we can in the morning. Lets go pack for a trip."
Angus will move back to Joe "Thanks again. Are you staying on the Big Float or going back to Plateau City?" Angus will buy Joe another drink before quickly leaving to pack.
BIn Wednesday January 17th, 2007 10:29:00 AM
Bin acknowledges Angus, "very well. I will put our name down as first available." Bin downs his beer in three gulps, then grabbing his stuff, heads for the door.
Wynn Wednesday January 17th, 2007 5:11:45 PM
"I have arranged for secure locks to be installed on the doors of our new house. I was expecting that to occur today. The keys may well be waiting for us as we speak. They are supposed to be quite good, but if someone really wants to break in, any lock can be opened. Am I right Xenia?"
Wynn removes his hat and the rest of his disguise falls away to reveal the bard in his normal appearance.
"I suggest we lock the doors but bring our valuables with us, at least until we have agreed upon a desired level of security during what I expect will be our frequent absences. Either that or we have one of Syr's more trusted employees check in on the place while we are gone."
Wynn downs the rest of his ale and prepares to leave the Ghost and head for home.
Syr Wednesday January 17th, 2007 7:30:39 PM
The elf takes the crumpled note and quickly scans it. His normal smile slowly changes to a thin lipped grimace. He looks at Xenia and nods slowly, mind elsewhere.
With a growing fury in his voice, "Angus, I'm behind you. I think we have some business to attend to." He cracks a knuckle for emphasis.
On the way out of the Ghost, he turns to Xenia, "We've got two apartments awaiting Shield Construction. I'll meet you guys back at the house. I need to give some final instructions to Dotta."
DM George Wednesday January 17th, 2007 7:32:16 PM
The group is galvanized towards action when they hear about the orphans being threatened. Angus asks Bin to check on the teleport gate to see if they need a reservation.
Bin scampers off to find the information while the rest return to their homes to gather supplies and equipment. Bin comes back in about an hour and informs the group that the portal will be open and available to pedestrian use in 4 hours. He also discovered that a toll of 5 gps per person is required to make use of the gate. It seems that the gate to the Plateau City is open less than the one coming from the Plateau City recently.
Before the group leaves the Giggling Ghost, Joe William accepts the drink from Angus and pulls the tall spelluser to the side, "Becareful my good friend. Rumor has the half orcs being connected to the guild in the Plateau City. They almost would have to be, operating so close to the city. While the Plateau City is a generally safe and good place to live, it does have its seedy side. You generally don't want to get involved with the people who run the underside of the city. They can turn nasty fast." With that little advice, Joe strolls over to a table and calls for some food. He grins at the serving girl and starts to engage her in conversation, specifically when she gets off work.
Several hours later, the Crimson Shields find themselves at the teleport gate to the Plateau City. They are waiting in a reasonable sized line filled with a diversity of people, merchants mainly, who are waiting for the big barn doors to open.
Two relaxed but experienced looking guards are backing up a good looking young man who seems to be collecting the fees.
Angus - Mage Armor Wednesday January 17th, 2007 8:57:50 PM
Angus walks back to the Shields Home in silence, thinking of all that have befallen Kay, Buckle and the kids. Once close to their home, Angus will dimension door to his room and begin packing, giving a quick "See you inside." as he "pops" out.
Angus will pack quickly as he does not have much to pack in his haversack, but does a quick inventory before heading downstairs.
Once everyone has assembled with their gear, Angus give a casual comment "Shall we go?" Angus looks to Wynn, "You want to check the locks?"
While waiting in line Angus gathers his friends "If we get a chance, we have to look up Mira and the Platea City gang, maybe have them for dinner at the plantation. Better yet, maybe we can ask them what they know about the underbelly of the city. If I remember correctly, Shadow, and most of the group have spent the better part of their lives in the city."
Xenia Wednesday January 17th, 2007 11:19:31 PM
The rogue needs no more than to change into traveling togs.
"Child Molesters! That's what they are." more of the grrrr ...
"Hey, you don't suppose Shadow'd know anything about this group, do you? Didn't he say sump'in about knowing the Guild in Plateau City? Maybe we go round to Sampson's we can get him to find out for us, huh?"
Belkior Thursday January 18th, 2007 12:35:45 PM
The halfling cleric hurries along with the others as they go back to the residence. Once there, he goes inside and dons all of his travelling gear and shoves his supplies into the Haversack. As he does, he runs through a mental checklist of items and gear.
"Potions ... yes." "Wands ... a bit low, but serviceable. Should make a couple more, now that I can." "Alchemical items ... here they are." "Weapons ... yes. Maybe I should do something with these, too." "Ready to go."
Once completed, Belkior will assemble with the others before going up to the portal. Once there, he digs out the toll from his purse.
Bin Thursday January 18th, 2007 1:56:29 PM
Bin knew the day would come for them to adventure again. He was packed and ready weeks ago, with his pack holding most of his belongings to begin with. He waits for the others and teleports when they do. "I think we should just go out to the farm first and foremost. One hour we give the fiends to do evil is one more those that have to deal with them suffer."
DM George Thursday January 18th, 2007 7:39:29 PM
The barn doors open and the portal comes into view. The line starts shuffling ahead as the magic item comes to life. People are handing over the fee (5 gps each)to the good looking man and then disappearing through the portal.
Soon it is the Crimson Shields turn. The clerk collects their money politely but quickly as well and the group finds itself striding into the portal. With a lurch suddenly everything is different. The air is warmer and seems to be drier. A nice steady breeze is flowing. A young woman dressed in brown is waving you off the the platform. "Come on or the next group will run into you."
The Shields obediently move ahead and move out to the street. You are now in the Plateau City. Will you look up your friends or head out to the plantation/orphanage first?
Xenia Thursday January 18th, 2007 9:24:35 PM
"An hour for a stop at Sampson's could save us days of tramping through the woods looking for these guys, Bin," Xenia replies when they emerge on the other side into Plateau City. "I mean, it's gonna take us a day to get out to the plantation anyway. What's an hour on the way? We check in, see if Shadow can help us. If he can't, we move on. What's the harm?"
With that, the rogue strides off for the inn. "Go on ahead if you want." Xenia thinks of the scroll in her haversack. That, and the speed at which Belkior will probably be walking. "Go on. I can catch up."
Lang & Sunshine Thursday January 18th, 2007 9:33:58 PM
Lang & Sunshine move out onto the street away from the teleport building.
"Where to first?"
Wynn Thursday January 18th, 2007 10:14:15 PM
The bard makes sure to lock up their home before leaving, and only follows along after he has made sure the place is secure.
The trip through the portal is uneventful and Wynn quickly makes his way off the platform to allow for the next travellers. "I'll go with you to Sampson's" he falls instep behind Xenia.
Angus Thursday January 18th, 2007 11:06:43 PM
Angus enjoys the teleport sensation and comments to himself, one day soon you will be able to do it all on your own.
Angus looks over at Xenia when she comments "Sampson's is a great idea. Lets leave them a message get a drink to fortify us for the trip and head out. Do we need a horse and cart for the second trip?"
Angus head off to Sampson's "We should stay together. No need to get anyone lost or waylayed, this city is not our back yard and who know if the Death Cult has come back."
John P - OOC Friday January 19th, 2007 9:19:21 AM
Two things -
First: I've been unable to connect to the Wold site from my home computer for the past couple days. This is the reason why I started posting in the morning. Unless my ISP gets their DNS fixed, I won't be able to post this weekend.
Second: Some of you know that the Plateau City folks are out at the farm in their current module. DM George of the Shields and I didn't coordinate anything so this isn't going to be a crossover. I don't know exactly what George has planned (and I don't want to know, as a player in the Shields). That adventure for the Plateau City folks has no bearing on this adventure.
In terms of game time, Plateau City is several months after the termination of the crossover while the Shields are only a couple weeks after. Part of the problem with arbitrary time flow in the Wold. In essence, the Shields are visiting Plateau City while the Plateau City folks were in an extended downtime.
I have encouraged those Plateau City folks who can post here to do so.
Belkior Friday January 19th, 2007 9:55:36 AM
The halfling cleric listens to his companions as they discuss how to begin this investigation.
"You all go to Sampson's. I'm going to check with that factor for the Von Otten's, the one who helped set up the orphanage. Maybe he knows something. I'll meet you by the gate out of town."
With that Belkior moves through the streets with the strange half-hopping motion that he has had to use ever since the encounter with the mad druid and her artifact. The increased speed is nice but he has had an aversion to water ever since. It doesn't take too long before Belkior needs to ask directions from a passerby on the street. The paragon thinks that his aura and the Vestment are of some use.
Once he is at the warehouse, Belkior will ask to speak to Ashbeard. If the dwarf isn't available, he will look up Steve.
"We got a letter from Kay out at the estate. There's apparently some trouble with the neighbours, some half-orc brigands. Do you know anything about what is going on?"
Bin Friday January 19th, 2007 1:01:48 PM
Plateau City, home to the diminutive human cleric. He grew up on the streets here. He remembers every back alley, crawl space and food bin throughout the lower parts of the city. He struggled to survive here and this was also where he learned how to live. He became a priest in this city and has many connections in his own temple region, but it seems his path at the moment is to assist his friends, one half of all his rescuers. He hopes that one hour will not make a difference as some suggest. "I don't suggest Belkior go alone. I will go with you, unless you think I should stay with the others?"
DM George Friday January 19th, 2007 11:23:50 PM
Both Belkior and Bin head over to see Ashbeard. They find the factor busy working behind his desk, examining invoices. He seems happy to see you if a little distracted. "No I haven't heard of any problems at the plantation. No one has brought anything to my attention. Kay should have come to see me if she was being bothered. Now that you are here, I am guessing that any kind of problems they are having are soon to disappear.
The rest of the group heads over to Sampsons for a good meal. The are happy to see one of their new friends Mira at the restaurant partaking in a meal.
Mira seems surpised to see her frieds and jumps up to greet them.
OOC Guys I am going to be out of town on business on Monday and Tuesday. I am hoping Drew can fill in for a day or two. Still if everyone posts by Sunday night, I will put Monday's post in then.
Angus Saturday January 20th, 2007 9:57:08 AM
Angus nods in agreement when Belkior suggest going to see Ashbeard's factor and comment "Good idea Bin. You go with Belkior. You know the city better than us all. Instead of meeting at the City gates, stop by Sampson's so you can at least get a quick meal and say high if any of our friends are in attendance."
Angus enjoys the walk through Plateau City and it is not difficult to finds Sampson's.
Angus enters Sampson's and quickly spots Mira and moves over and give the Sorcerer a big hug. "I am glad to find you well. How is your group doing? Stomping all the evil out of Plateau City I expect." After listening to Mira Angus will add "We are here to check up on Kay and the kids as we got a distirbing note that some half orcs are shaking her down for money. Do you or maybe shadow know of any new problems in the area?"
Angus will also suggest the Shields "Lets get a quick bite and drink while waiting for Bin and Belkior and be prepared to leave as soon as they arrive. We have some kids to check on."
Xenia Saturday January 20th, 2007 12:25:39 PM
"Mira!" The dark skinned rogue greets the bespectacled sorcerer with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. As promised, she passes Mira the address of their new place off of The Narrow Way on Merchant Level. The note is written on yellow paper. Descriptions of the new place follow along with invitations to come visit. The City is buzzing with activity these days, but maybe they could convince someone to take them on a Turtle ride.
"We also heard, you know," Xenia adds after Angus lays out the reason they're here in Plateau City, "that this might be connected to ... The Guild here in Plateau City, and I remember Shadow saying something about knowing someone on the Inside last time we were here. It's like, you know, we were wondering whether he might know something about these orcs. Or at least whether the orcs have the Blessing to operate and whether we'd be crossing them what give the Blessing if we should happen to stomp the orcies a little, if you know what I mean?"
Wynn Saturday January 20th, 2007 7:38:07 PM
The bard enters Sampsons behind Xenia and looks for a familiar face. He smiles at Mira as she and Xenia greet each other like long-lost sisters. Wynn can remember a time when they were not quite as friendly.
Bin Sunday January 21st, 2007 1:30:10 PM
looking to Ashbeard Bin says, "Thank you for that information. We will do what we can for them all. Darn orcs are like cockroaches. Hard to kill and they produce faster then rabbits." Bin leaves with Belkior when he is ready and takes him on the most direct route to the rest of the group.
Lang & Sunshine Sunday January 21st, 2007 2:15:22 PM
A bite to eat sounds good to Lang. Might be awhile before another warm meal. Lang & Sunshine follow the group into Sampson's.
"Angus do you want me to go scout out the initial area outside the city that leads to the plantation? See if I can find any tracks or something?"
Syr Sunday January 21st, 2007 3:05:28 PM
Once back in Plateau city, the elf takes in the surroundings from a new perspective. With a critical eye, he compares the structures in the new city. Sighing wistfully when a particular building shows fine craftsmanship. "You know, we've only been gone a few hours and I already feel homesick." he comments to no one in particular.
Seeing the Ranger volunteer to get out of the city he nudges him gently, "Any chance that you need backup?"
DM George Monday's post Sunday January 21st, 2007 11:53:13 PM
The group scatters on different informational runs. Belkior and Bin meet up at the Inn after getting a little information and everyone sits down for a good meal with their friend Mira.
Mira is happy to see the group and fills them in on what has been happening since they last saw each other. (Carla feel free to post here!!!)
While the group is asking the right questions, it doesn't seem to get any new information on the situation outside of the Plateau City. None seem surprised that the Thieves Guild might be trying to expand their operations out to the countryside but no one seems to know particulars on any given group or person.
Lang and Syr volunteer to go do some scouting on the main roads but if they go, they will see that the Plateau City is a huge commercial center with a huge amounts of traffic coming into and out of the city. Cattle, sheep, trade goods and raw material makes its way into the city every day. The chance of finding any tracks amongst all that confusion almost seems impossible. Closer to the plantation might reveal better results.
What will the group do next? Look for more answers here or head out to the scene of the crime?
OOC Remember that I will be gone until Wed. 24th. Drew if you can take over for Tuesday, please do so.
Angus Monday January 22nd, 2007 8:31:45 AM
Angus drains his wine and take a last meager bite of his half eaten steak. "Well lets get ourselves organized. Lang and Syr, not a bad idea to scout ahead. How about you two go forward and get the lay of the land. We will get some supplies and catch up, you may have to double back for us as we will not be as fast as you two. See what information you can find out from the travelers on the road. They may have heard more than the folk of Plateau City."
Angus will order some bread, cheese and wine for the road as it is over a days journey to the plantation.
Once Belkior and Bin meet up and the group has supplies he suggests. "Lets go catch up to Lang and Syr."
Xenia d20+20=22 Monday January 22nd, 2007 10:44:41 AM
It's like, some folks don't like to speak the name of Marteaus. For fear of calling him to you, you know. Same goes for The Guilds. They get an earful of someone asking 'bout them and they come sniffin' 'round wantin' to know why. It's only good sense and business. But it's something a body has to keep in mind.
"Say hi to the other guys, Mira." Getting ready to leave Sampsons. "And pet Birdie for me. Maybe we'll be able to stay longer on the way back. But you gotta come visit us sometime. We got plenty of room."
"Um, and tell Shadow that if he gets in touch with The Guild," the rogue whispers quick and quiet into Mira's ear, have him tell 'em we got no want to cross them. Just looking to protect our own."
Casual as she might look, Xenia is all eyes when the group leaves Sampsons. (Spot 22) It's a different town with different places to hide and watch. But watching out for the watchers is her job, and she keeps her eyes peeled in case the group has picked up a tail.
Inside, though, the girl rogue is wondering whether it might not have been a good idea to be getting the Plateau City group involved in this. Wondering if this might not have brought the Mithril Order a load of trouble that they didn't need.
Belkior Monday January 22nd, 2007 11:39:25 AM
The halfling cleric returns from the Von Otten's place with Bin. The prospect of possibly seeing some of the adventurers from Plateau City again does bring a smile to Belkior's face as he enters Sampson's.
"As Bin said, Ashbeard has nothing to report. At least he's keeping up his end of the bargain."
Belkior orders an ale and soem food prepared without meat when the server comes around. His feet dangle from the chair as he waits with his companions. Like Angus, he purchases some travel food to take with him.
Once people set out towards the orphanage, Belkior will move in the centre of the group. While he is prepared to assist those who request aid, he is impatient to get on the road and out to the orphanage.
Bin Monday January 22nd, 2007 1:36:40 PM
"Give me a steak, no, make that two, with a loaf of bread and a roll of cheese." He puts his finger to his chin in a thoughtful manner, "Better throw in a bottle of elven wine also, please."
Bin eats like he always does and seems to have a small belly pouch when he is finished. "Ok, now that I'm full, I'm ready to fight injustice where ever we may find it."
Mira Monday January 22nd, 2007 4:40:29 PM
Mira greets the Shields returning Angus' and Xenia's hugs, and pocketing the note passed to her by the half drow rogue.
"Arm and I checked on kids just a little while ago, but they seemed to be doing well. There were no reports of anyone troubling them. Buckle gave us an invite for the fall, speculating that the first crops were going to be a success. Sorry."
Mira looks troubled at the news about the unneighborly neigbors.
Before she leaves, Mira gives Xenia another hug, and whispers in her ear, "Kay and Buckle seemed pretty 'close' if you know what I mean. They seem a nice couple to be in charge of the place, and the kids."
Waving the group as they make their departure, she calls out, "good luck!"
Wynn Monday January 22nd, 2007 7:16:16 PM
With no new information to guide them, the only course of action the bard can see is to make for the orphanage. "If we're going out to the plantation we'd best bring some provisions with us. Maybe the Van Ottens can lend us a cart again and we can ferry out some supplies...who knows, might even attract some of the neighbours" he grins
Lang & Sunshine Monday January 22nd, 2007 8:46:30 PM
Lang says hello to Mira. He is somewhat happy to hear that the trouble has only started recently. Perhaps it is all a misunderstanding. He hopes so because the Shields won't tolerate anyone harming the kids.
"Syr let's go. You, Sunshine and I can get a head start towards the plantation. Maybe we can find out a thing or two before the rest of the group catches up."
"Don't worry Angus we will not get too close and expose ourselves to whoever is out there."
Syr Monday January 22nd, 2007 11:54:01 PM
The elf nods at Lang before giving the Sunshine a quick scratch behind the ears and a gentle push forward. "Let's get started before we lose the light. They can get provisions and catch up quickly. Especially if they rent a cart."
Angus (second illegal post) Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 12:52:42 PM
Angus calls after Syr and Lang "Go ahead and range ahead and find a nice campsite for us. I think it is a good idea to get a cart and supplies for the farm. We will take an hour or two and follow behind. Be safe and have a warm fire burning."
Angus will take the rest of the group to see if he can quickly rent a horse and cart. "What supplies do you think will help the plantation?" Angus asks those Shields remaining.
Taking a look-see while gathering supplies [DM.Drew] Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 3:03:26 PM
A fine meal is enjoyed by all at Sampson's and is accompanied by an old friend in Mira; she tells a bit about what is happening at the orphanage and it seems that the issues are not too far progressed.
The scouts know that separating themselves from the rest of the group will ensure an easier time hiding and maintaining a low profile. Syr, Lang and Sunshine take off immediately for the plantation and find that as the evening sun begins to settle towards the horizon the crowds on the main streets begin to thin slightly.
The rest begin to order food and drink for the road; the steaks, fresh bread, cheeses and fine wines from Sampson's will prove vastly superior to the normal compressed trail bars and jerkied meats that the group is typically used to.
Angus calls the rest to head out and find a horse and cart with him so that they can gather some supplies for the plantation. There are merchants who sell everything that is sought after but does the group want to assume responsibility for another animal permanently? There are a few merchants who are willing to use their emptied carts and own steeds to transport the goods for a cheaper price though.
Sorry guys, my internet has been down for a few days and I am a bit behind so this is not as specific as it normaly would.
Bin Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 5:48:01 PM
"My suggestion is rent help for what we can't carry ourselves. With our haversacks, we should be fine with just renting horses to increase our speed. perhaps a chariot?"
Xenia Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 8:57:53 PM
"A small keg of flour, another of molasses, a bolt of nice cloth, spool of wire, and books." Xenia spiels the list off without thought. "Lots of books. Boxes of books. Won't be getting that out there, and the kids 'specially, gotta read."
"That's bulky stuff what can't be brought but by wagon."
Angus Tuesday January 23rd, 2007 11:50:15 PM
Angus will attempt to quickly rent and if not possible purchase a cart and horse, as it is the only way to hold all of the useful suggestions from Xenia. Angus is sure the plantation can use the new supplies, but haste is the most important as he only wants the trailblazers a few hours ahead of them.
Once the wagon is stocked and the group is on the road, Angus will ask Bin to ride with him in the wagon. "Bin, when we get in trouble we normally break down into groups and fight with buddies. Syr and Lang take on threats and support each other. Xenia and Wynn are our reserve and plug holes where needed. Belkior and I support the group with offensive and defensive spells. Which group do you find yourself best suited for? You mentioned that you are not unaccustomed to fighting, will you join Syr and Lang's combat team?"
Wynn Wednesday January 24th, 2007 7:55:31 AM
The bard helps load supplies onto the wagon, slippimng in a small sac of toffees for the children before taking the lead on the way out of the city.
Belkior d20+6=16 Wednesday January 24th, 2007 8:07:49 AM
The halfling cleric decides to help ANgus with renting a cart and horse to take all of the goods that Xenia has rhymed off. With luck, he hopefully manages to find a stableman who revers Alemi for the transaction. Diplomacy = 16, +/- 1 for followers/opposed to Alemi
After all of the goods are purchased, Belkior will provide what assistance he can with loading. With his small size, he won't be of much use lifting barrels into the cart but he would be good at packing items into the corners.
Finally, the reargaurd is ready to travel. Belkior may ride or walk depending on whether he thinks the horse is too loaded. He's eager, like the others, to get out to the estate.

In a small, condescending manner, Bin laughs and shrugs his shoulders at the group, then helps them pack their goods. He thinks to himself sarcastically, {{I'm glad their's no hurry to go and help these poor people. Supplies can be bought later when we are sure there is someplace or someone to take them to.)) Bin sighs out loud while loading gear and supplies, {{Oh well, I suppose their hearts are in the right place.}}
In answer to Angus's question he responds, "I will be with Syr and Lang, gladly." He moves in to join the two.

Maybe at another time such a thing may have simply sailed through the air and to the place where all silly slights go when they go unnoticed. As it is, the I'm-Looking-Down-On-You-From-High-On-Superiority kinda laugh that the guy tosses at everyone else zips in and stings the rogue such that her eyes narrow and her dark lips pull into a thin line of anger. With an effort of will, she refrains from flipping the appropriately rude gesture at the new guy and goes on preparing the cart for departure.
Lang & Sunshine d20+15=23 Wednesday January 24th, 2007 7:50:21 PM
Lang & Syr start towards the plantation. Lang waits until the city is a distance behind them to start looking for tracks or other signs.
Track 23 (25 giant/27 plant)
"Syr, I do not think we should get any closer than 2 to 3 miles from the plantation. We do not want to get ourselves in over our heads. If we are discovered that close we can pass ourselves off as travelers going to the city. Or possibly take a prisoner for questioning. What do you think?"
DM George Arrival Wednesday January 24th, 2007 9:50:06 PM
Lang and Syr move ahead of the group and work their way out to the plantation. The see a steady stream of people on the road but traffic diminishes as they move farther out. After hours of travel, a break for a meal, a couple more to rest weary feet, they finally make it to their destination.
The don't immediately close with the plantation but scout it out. Things have changed since their last visit. The fields are tilled and a crop is growing, several head of cattle are grazing in a pasture and kids seem to be all over the place. Mostly they seem to be working, weeding gardens, feeding chickens and doing other chores. Still many seem to find time for play, games of tag and hide in seek are in evidence. Overall the place looks peaceful.
*****************************************
Angus finds it easier to just buy a cart and a horse to pull it. The goods are quickly bought and the main party sets out a few hours after Lang and Syr have left. (Figure you spent 120 gps on the horse (light) a cart and general supplies. The group seems to be getting a little testy with each other. Is it concern for the children, nerves on what they might find or something else?
The sun is low in the sky when the group finally catches up with Syr and Lang. They are relieved to hear that things look peaceful but have to wonder how long that will last.
Xenia Wednesday January 24th, 2007 10:29:31 PM
"Maybe we shouldn't oughta all go in and announce ourselves," Xenia offers. "If they got someone watching the place, those what are watching will be reporting back that the orphans have sent for reinforcements. If we don't catch up to the bad guys, just us coming around could fall bad on Kay, Buckle and the kids just for calling for us."
"Maybe one or two of us could slip in and get some knowing of just where these orcies might be laired. After that, we slip out, link back up, and go hunting."
Angus Wednesday January 24th, 2007 11:24:07 PM
Angus purchases the cart and horse for the trip. The farm could use the extra horse power.
Angus is relieved to catch up to Lang and Syr "How does everything look?"
Angus scans the plantation also and at Xenia's suggestion he shakes his head "These are our friends, if anyone is watching let them watch. We are very much a mixed bag for anyone to see. If any of you want to slip in after dark be my guest, it does have merit, but I am off to see the kids. Anyone coming in with me jump on the cart. We will make a spectical of our arrive, so that any that want to sneak in should have few eyes on them."
Angus will wait to see who jumps on the cart and then he will move foreward. Angus will fish out a large three pound chunk of chocolate to wave at the kids once they are in sight. If that does not get them running to the wagon, nothing will.
Syr Thursday January 25th, 2007 12:36:45 AM
The elf reports to Angus when the rest of the group arrives. "It certainly looks peaceful. Lang went in a bit closer than I dared. You can ask him."
"Both of your ideas have some merit. I can see better than average at night. However, if we are talking about hunting these orcs, it might be best to get some info from Kay first. At least that would give us a general direction to start. Although my eyes are better than most, I'd still prefer not to go traipsing around iin the dark."
Wynn Thursday January 25th, 2007 8:03:53 AM
The bard nods his head in agreement with Xenia. "Straight on in sounds best to me" he concurs. "Besides, we can't just go traipsing about on an orc hunt without some more information, unless Syr and Lang already know where they are." He looks to the bugbear and the monk for confirmation.
Xenia Thursday January 25th, 2007 9:10:18 AM
"Hokay." Xenia nods. "Just friends come for a visit." Her serious face relaxes into a smile. "And we brought Stuff!"
She leaps up into the cart, facing forward toward their friends waiting at plantation. Maybe there would even be time enough for a swim.
Angus (second illegal post) Thursday January 25th, 2007 10:58:24 AM
Angus smiles at Xenia "Excellent! Once we greet the kids see if you can pull Kay aside and see if there is an immediate danger, i doubt it with eveyone outside, but you never know."
Angus waves the block of chocolate more vigorously as he get closer to the kids. "Chocolate is mother natures haste spell for kids!!"
Belkior Thursday January 25th, 2007 3:49:03 PM
The halfling cleric calmly walks beside the cart carrying the goods out to the farm. It will be good to see the children.
Belkior listens with half an ear to the debate about whether to announce their arrival at the farm. The choices he has made in serving Alemi mean that he finds it difficult to hide or skulk about. When given a chance, he states his opinion.
"Let's go there directly. If we scare off the miscreants, all the better. If these half-orcs simply decide to hide, well, we're good at looking."
Bin Thursday January 25th, 2007 3:55:43 PM
Bin has a concerned look on his face, or perhaps it is thoughtful. As the others get in the cart he speaks his mind. "If we announce to the world our love for the children, they will be a target for any enemies we have or make in the future. We must be sure to leave no problems behind once we take this course, or it will be them that suffer after we are gone." With that he climbs into the cart with the others. He looks at Xenia with a smile and adds, "I would like to apologize to you all for my impatience earlier. I pray it does not reflect upon me to poorly. I can see by wanting to expedite justice, I may have hurt some feelings. That was not my intention." Bin seems genuine and sincere in his remarks.
DM George Thursday January 25th, 2007 8:28:45 PM
The group comes into view of the farmhouse and are quickly spotted by the children working in the fields. At first the children seem alarmed to see you but quickly recognize you and start screaming and yelling for joy. Quickly a stampede forms as children drop their tools and run towards you in delight.
Two group members are quickly overwhelmed by the attention. 10 children quickly surround Angus mouths watering at the treat he is holding but even more popular is Lang and Sunshine. Lang is litterly toppled over as 20 kids mob him. "Its Lang our human teddy bear! Teddy Teddy! Feel how soft he is. I bet he would keep your feet warm at night!" These comments come from several different mouths as the hero is greeted by the children who adore him.
Kay can be seen coming out to the porch holding her hand to her eyes looking at the group. A big smile crosses her face and she starts moving towards you.
Lang & Sunshine d20+6=12 d20=12 Thursday January 25th, 2007 9:28:20 PM
Lang runs forward to meet the children as they overwhelm him. Sunshine, with his tail wagging a mile a minute, barks up a storm as the children all try to pet him. Lang falls to the ground pretending to be vanquished by the "much stronger" kids.
As the initial excitement wears off he sits on the ground with Sunshine as the children pet both him and his dog. He casually looks over the children for injuries and asks innocent questions that may tell more about what is happening on the farm.
Spot 12 Gather Info 12
Once all the group has gathered near Kay, Lang will get up and hear what she has to say.
Xenia Thursday January 25th, 2007 9:35:19 PM
Xenia flips a gloved hand in negation. "'S alright. No harm done, Bin."
"To tell you the truth, I'm kinda worried 'bout the same thing you are. Hope we're not being watched. Or hope they just think we're friends dropping off supplies, yeah?"
"Kay!" Hoping off the wagon, the rogue looks moves on Kay with open arms. On the way, she keeps an eye open for little blonde Kyria. "I hear that Mira came to visit with her guy Arm." She laughs as Angus and Lang are mobbed by the kids. "Floating City's building back up again. We got a new place. This time on Merchant Level. Lets go inside, huh? I remember the way it was last time we were here. Can't wait to see whatcha done with it."
"This is Bin Berry," the red headed rogue introduces. "He's new to the group. Fammie went off somewhere in Plateau City. I think she was looking to stay. Or maybe go off to some mountain somewhere." Xenia's dark lips break into a smile as she banishes those serious sorta thoughts to a place best forgotten.
"While the guys are bringing in the supplies, you can catch us up on anything of *Note* what's been happening around here."
Belkior Friday January 26th, 2007 7:52:41 AM
The halfling cleric waits until the tumult around Lang and Angus eases a bit before going forward. Some of these human youngsters are just too big and strong for Belkior to join their roughhousing.
When Xenia invites herself inside, Belkior joins along to enter the building. He, too, remembers how the place was when they fought the vampire.
Angus Friday January 26th, 2007 8:28:31 AM
Angus looks over to Bin "Do not worry, your heart is in the right place. The reason the orphanage is way out here is that at one time those that wished to infulence us, burned there orphanage to the ground. It is just that I do not want to hide the fact that we are friends to this lot, for good or ill."
Angus is pleased to see the plantation transformed from the evil that had taken it over. Angus sees the kids come running and there is no way he can keep from getting dragged to the ground, so the thin man tries a different tact. Hoisting the chocolate chunk on high he yells to those approaching "Catch!" and toss the large sweet to the largest child "Remember to share!" Angus will move through the kids, hugging and messing up their hair.
When Kay approaches and Xenia start the conversatiion, Angus will move over so he can hear and comment, since he is incapable of keeping his mouth shut.
Bin Friday January 26th, 2007 10:19:49 AM
Bin steps out of the way of the mob that descends on the chocolate and those that bring it. At Xenia's introduction he smiles at Kay and gives her a courtly bow. "A pleasure it is to meet you fine folk." He says and then asks, "Where would you like for these supplies to be stored and some of us will get started on that." He mingles with the children a bit and gets the largest to assist with the labor. "Many hands make light work. Always keep that in mind children."
DM George Friday January 26th, 2007 10:29:03 PM
The group is finally able to tear themselves away from the children who surround the older kid holding the sweets that Angus threw to him. He seems to be dividing it up evenly as the Crimson Shields troop into the house.
Kay hugs and kisses all of the older Shields that she knew and brings them on an inspection tour of the old farm house. The house is shaping up but the group can quickly see that house is already crowded with bedding and clothes tucked away everywhere.
Once the tour is over, Kay sits down and starts serving some bread and cheese to the group with some cool water. "Sorry I can't provide better but there are alot of mouths to feed. I want to thank you for coming. I feel bad always imposing on you but I was at my wits end and I didn't know which way to turn."
Kay suddenly slumps into a chair and starts softly crying, hands covering her eyes. She looks at them with red rimmed eyes and says, "As you know from my note, we have had some unsavory visitors lately. They say they are protecting us from bandits and that I have to pay them or they will withdraw the protection and who knows what could happen to the kids. I paid them but they keep coming back. You and Ashbeard were very generous in getting us set up but I didn't plan on this and I won't get through the winter if I have to keep paying. I just don't know what to do!" Kay covers her face again
Bin Saturday January 27th, 2007 4:49:11 AM
The cleric sympathetically listens to the tail, then quietly listens to the conversation with his comrades. He will offer advice when it is necessary but this is personal for his new friends and all he can really do is support them at this time.
Angus Saturday January 27th, 2007 9:37:58 AM
Angus starts turning red as he listens to Kay's tale. "How often do these protectors come by?" Angus practically spits out the word protectors. Angus get his composure and adds "I think I want to talk with one of them." Angus smiles, but there is no warmth in the smile.
Angus looks to Lang and then to Kay "Do you know what direction these people came from and when was the last time they were here. Lang and Sunshine may be able to pick up the scent if it has not been too long, and maybe we can find their camp and offer to protect them from these dangerous times."
Angus crosses his arms over his thin chest and exhales again trying to remain calm. Then the sorcerer remembers his manners and reaches into his haversack and pulls out two bottles of wine. Angus cracks them and pours a glass for Kay before he asks "Where is Buckle?"
Xenia Saturday January 27th, 2007 10:25:18 AM
"Oh, Kay." Xenia folds Kay in her arms and just sorta cradles her while she cries. "'S alright. We're here now. You call and you know we're gonna come." She gives the human woman a reassuring squeeze. "I mean, that's why we're the Shields. 'Cause we pertect folks. It's what we do."
"We've gone through a lotta stuff, doncha know? You're important to us. You, and the kids, and Buckle. You're our friends. 'Course we're gonna come. Anytime. Right guys?"
The dark girl takes holds the human woman until the sobs subside, then she takes her hand and looks her in the eye.
"We solve stuff. And we're here now to take care of this. But we need to know some stuff about these guys who are hitting you up. Names, their numbers, where they been reported being seen, who else they been hitting up, any rumors. Don't suppose they base themselves outta any place, do they?"
Stars, if it could be that simple ...
Wynn Saturday January 27th, 2007 1:33:26 PM
The bard listens as the worries and fears spill out of Kay. Her story pulls at the darker side of him as memories of his childhood friend flood back to the forefront of his conciousness. Ellerin, dying in his arms as they had vainly tried to disrupt just such a scourge in the farmlands of Cinnamon Valley. Powerful men, armed and without concience, preying on the weak and protected by corrupt officials.
Wynn says nothing, but a grim silence settles over the bard as he fights to restrain his anger.
Belkior Saturday January 27th, 2007 9:14:27 PM
The halfling cleric listens compassionately with the others as Kay pours out her problems. Belkior also wonders what has happened to Buckle since the former soldier should have been able to do something about this threat.
It seems that his companions are asking all of the questions that he can think of, so Belkior moves to the window to look at the children playing outside.
Lang & Sunshine Sunday January 28th, 2007 3:40:28 PM
"Don't worry Kay, we are here now. We won't let any more of this protection shenanigans happen."
Lang looks at his fellow Shields. He is glad to have these guys on his side.
"Come on Syr. Let's go scout around the wall and see if we can find any tracks or signs of these protectors."
Syr Monday January 29th, 2007 12:55:36 AM
Syr nods at Lang and mentions to him on the way out the door. "I've always been kinda quiet when I move but can you point out what you look for when you are tracking? I mean other than footprints, how do you do it? Does Sunshine smell the path?"

The group comforts Kay and gradually she gets back her composure. She hears Angus' question and answers, "Buckle went to town a couple of days ago to get supplies and see if he could get some information on this gang that is harrassing us. I thought he would be back by now since he originally travelled with Joe who we sent on with the message for you. I am worried about him."
*****************************************
Lang and Syr move outside and start looking around for tracks and other hints on this group. They do find several adult prints but they are old and doubt they would lead anywhere. As they study the terrain, they come to realize that it wouldn't be hard to sneak up on the plantation. Cover is abundant from trees, to growing crops and the several outbuildings. The plantation wasn't built for defense but as the logical place to manage the farm.
As the pair widen their circles, Sunshine sniffs the air and starts to grow low in his throat. He is staring at the barn.
Xenia Monday January 29th, 2007 9:46:52 PM
The rogue worries the fullness of her dark lip with her white teeth. Not to worry Kay any more than she is, but that don't sound good. Buckle's gotta know the plantation needs protecting and there'd be no reason to dawdle.
"Um, maybe you'd best tell us a bit about these extortionist guys, Kay." Keep her working. That should take her mind off things. "Woods Guy Joe said something about them maybe being connected to the Guilds in Plateau City. Do you know anything else about them? Any names? In the letter, you said Half-orcs like in more than one Half-orc. How many have you seen around? Where have folks reported seeing them? Who else they been hitting up. Any rumors about them? Don't suppose they base themselves outta any place nearby, do they?"
DM George Monday January 29th, 2007 10:40:31 PM
OOC I made a mistake in my posting of travel. Know that in the future it will take a full day and a half to travel from the plantation to the Plateau city.
Syr Monday January 29th, 2007 11:58:46 PM
Syr watches intently as the Ranger and his pet begin the process of tracking. When he notices the dog growling for no appearant reason he nudges Lang, "Should I run for the others? I'm leaning towards checking it out before we cry wolf. I can always go first, my fast feet can get me out of most trouble. You and the puppy can hang back and watch. I remember what happened the last time that I charged off into the barn and want to be a bit more cautious."
Lang & Sunshine Tuesday January 30th, 2007 12:30:40 AM
Lang tries to catch the scent that Sunshine is smelling (don't forget I have scent too).
"What is it boy?"
Lang listens to Syr and he also remembers the last time they went into the barn. Or at least when he tried to enter the barn. He glances around the courtyard looking for any children that might get caught in the line of fire.
"Yea, let's check it out. I'll cover you with my bow. Could just be an animal or one of the kids."
Lang paces about 30 feet behind Syr with his bow out. Sunshine is on Lang's right.
Angus Tuesday January 30th, 2007 3:44:44 AM
Angus listens as Xenia gently questions Kay and only adds "I think we will be staying around for a while. I know you may be stapped for space, but is there anyplace you can put us up, that is depending on what Lang and Syr find."
Angus smiles but his mood is gloomy as he does not like the sound of any of this.
Belkior Tuesday January 30th, 2007 7:49:31 AM
The halfling cleric is heartened when Kay recovers from her tears. While he once concentrated solely on healing the body, Belkior now realizes that determination and a positive attitude are equally or more important, whether in battle or in daily life.
After Angus enquires about Kay finding room, Belkior chuckles. "I don't take much room, really."
He will listen intently when Kay responds to Xenia's questions, before askign one of his own.
"Do these fellows identify themselves some way that you've noticed? Some jewelry or clothing, perhaps?"
Bin Tuesday January 30th, 2007 9:29:43 AM
Bin feels uneasy watching the woman's weakness and vulnerability at this time. The worry of her husband clearly as troublesome as her worry for the children. "With your permission Kay, I would like to set Glyph's of Warding around where the children sleep so that none can be abducted and used as leverage against us? Have no fear, I can set the parameter's to where the children are not harmed. I can't cast it today, but how about tomorrow morning?"
Who are you looking for? [DM.Drew] Tuesday January 30th, 2007 9:18:06 PM
Sunshine's growls grow louder as she continues with the scent. Lang now catches a musty funk floating in the air; a dirty, thick musk that settles in the back of your throat...orc scent.
Down the road a ways all can discern six basic humanoid figures walking; there is a staunch swagger to their step as they come closer. You all, after a second look, realize that they are orc and half-orc in nature; one in front swing an arm and taps another next to him before pointing towards the lot of you.
Kay's face drains of whatever color was there as she recognizes the group.
"Tha...that's them."
Xenia Tuesday January 30th, 2007 9:32:29 PM
... grrrrr ... The rogue gets a growly tick at the back of her throat.
"HEY YOU! YOU STOP RIGHT THERE! STAND AWAY! DON'T YOU TAKE ANOTHER STEP. WE'LL COME OUT TO YOU! YOU HEAR!" Xenia bosses them from a distance, shaking her finger in the air.
"Best get the kids inside, Kay. Shutter what windows you can, and lock the door. We'll see to this."
Bin Tuesday January 30th, 2007 11:03:57 PM
So it begins. A confrontation between the good and the bad. Wrong versus right. Who will prevail? Bin is determined to find out. He starts to skirt to the outside of the incoming group to herd what children might still be out and about. Making sure there are none near them first. "Let's go kids. Get inside. Adults need to have a talk here and there is no reason for you to listen. Come on, get in the house."
Angus Tuesday January 30th, 2007 11:17:39 PM
Angus was lost in thought, but Xenia brings him back when she calls out to the advancing party. Bin and Xenia give good advice to Kay and the Kids. "Kay, keep your head down and the kids in the house. It is time for some agressive parlay. Lets go have a talk."
Angus steps out on the front porch and waits for the Shields to form up before he strides purposefully toward the antagonists.

Syr d20+8=23 d20+10=30 d20+4=24 Wednesday January 31st, 2007 1:20:48 AM
The elf reacts to the approaching figures quietly. Rather than entering the barn, he slides up to the door carefully and takes a quick peek inside (spot 23). As the orcs approach, he attempts to fade into the shadows around the door, doing so quite successfully (Hide nat 20). When Angus moves to the front porch, he presses an ear agaist the wall (Listen nat 20) trying to determine what is spooking Sunshine. If anything is noticed, he motions frantically to Lang. If not, he gives the okay sign to the bugbear.
Belkior - Bless Wednesday January 31st, 2007 9:13:56 AM
The halfling cleric looks at Kay after she identifies the group appoaching the farm. Belkior will assist with hurrying the children inside. Then, since Kay and the children seem to be frightened, Belkior will mutter the words of a Bless spell to hearten them and his companions.
After doing that, the Paragon will move outside with his companions, settling his armor and equipment into place as he moved.

Lang & Sunshine d20+6=26 Wednesday January 31st, 2007 12:29:46 PM
Lang watches as Syr approaches the barn, ready to help if his friend is attacked. He notices Syr's attention move towards the road about the same time as the smell from the approaching group meets his nose. He quickly glances around the courtyard, seeing that the Shields and Kay have all been alerted to the approaching group. Lang notice's Kay's distress and the rapid movement of getting the children inside. He is happy to know that the protector's have made the Shields job of finding them much easier. Lang puts his bow back in his quiver.
"Sunshine defend."
Lang and Sunshine move forward to meet the advancing group. He knows that this body with its 7+ feet of height and muscular frame will be useful in the upcoming confrontation. Lang continues moving towards the Orcs and Half-orcs, not even bothering to see if the Shields are backing him up because he knows they will be. He stops when he gets about 25' from them. He gives them all the once over, assessing their weapons, armor and strength. He tries to determine which one is the leader.
Spot 26 (natural 20)
Lang speaks to the one that he thinks is the leader of the group.
"You're trespassing. Leave."
Lang waits for a reply with his hands on his shortwords and Sunshine, as always, at his side ready to defend his master.
DM George Wednesday January 31st, 2007 8:20:05 PM

The group gets themselves ready for a confrontation as a group of half orcs move towards the plantation. Spells are cast and children are gathered. Lang takes the most direct approach and bravely marches towards the intruders and makes his feelings known.
The half orcs stare up and down at the huge bugbear surprised to see one of his kind here at all. One will step forward and Kay whispers, "That is Stomp. At least that is what he calls himself. He normally does the talking."
Stomp is armed in leather studded and carries a long bow on his back and a sheathed longsword on his back. His armor and weapons look well cared for and he carries himself with the grace of a warrior.
"Why are you here? Who do you work for. This is our territory! The boss isn't going to be happy to see you working his turf."
Angus Wednesday January 31st, 2007 8:26:49 PM
Angus is very annoyed and attempts to double time it toward Lang and Sunshine and give a whispered plea to his friends by the house. "Lets move up quickly."
Angus waves in the direction of Lang and the orcs and calls out "Make sure you get their generous donation for the orphan fund! They each look like big givers! Tell them we will accept, gold, platinum, gem, and as always magic items!" Angus has a big grin on his face as he barely restrains himself from casting something nasty. Angus thinks to himself, information first...one way or another.
Angus will stop 10 feet behind Lang and wait for the rest of the group to arrive.

"You're Stomp, right?" she calls out, and leaves Kay's side, making her way toward the others. "Yeah. You look like what was described to us. They said you might be a good one to talk to. Someone who might survive ... " she makes stirring motions with her hands " ... after all this unpleasantness is over and done with."
"You see, the Accounting Book Boys been watching your Boss, and they don't like what they see. They see Skimming the Cream. They see a Hand in the Jar of Sweets. You understand my meaning, don'cha?"
"That means you're Boss is coming down. And not in a pretty way, I'll tell you. But a smart fellow could live through this if he chose the right side to join on. You get my meaning, Stomp? Could be even they could end up smelling real good."
The black clad rogue pads in a predatory circle around the edge of the group of orcs.
"Be a shame if he was to choose the wrong side," she says and shakes her head sort of sad-like, "Shame to fall under the crush when all that good could be coming to him." (Bluff 16)

Nodding with a quick head jerk at the barn door, Syr quietly moves inside.

He turns and growls at his comrades, "Go back and report! I am staying and having a couple drinks with my new friend."

"Pssst! Wynn! When Stomp breaks the enchantment, do you think that you can intimidate him? Tell him how much he blabbed, threaten to tell his boss?""

Angus starts quaffing wine and talking about the weather with his new friend. Stomp seems to like the wine and starts really putting it away. After a while, he asks for some cheese to go with the wine and some bread.

Wynn continues to pare his nails with the rather wicked looking dagger.
"I was really hoping you were a stand-up guy and that our meeting with your boss was going to be cordial, a business meeting where we come to a mutual arrangement about territory and commissions, and who has first option on any goods. Now if I can't trust you and you can't trust me, well that's going to make this business arrangement difficult. Percentages will change, and that affects profit, and margins on an operation like this are thin at the best of times."
Wynn looks stomp squarely in the eyes to make sure the half-orc is paying attention and that the lout seems to be following his line of thought. He taps the half-orc on the chest with the flat of his dagger to emphasize the next point.
"Now if we can't trust you and your boss can't trust you, and he won't trust you after we let him know just how much information you've spilled, well just who is going to watch your back. Seems to me that we're the best friends you've got now. I mean, what will the others say, what can they say, other than you stayed behind and cut yourself a special private deal..."
Wynn lets that last thought hang for a moment. "I think you'd better come clean with us and answer my friends questions if you still want a place in this operation"

I am sure your tough and all but he is a farking giant. They don't scare easy."

We take a lot in in food and livestock. With that big crew you have to. Ogres can almost eat a big by themselves and giants have huge bellies that need filling constant. Still we have a warm roof over our heads, plenty to eat and some nice captives to warm the bed. What else could you want?"
The group moves for 4 more hours and the Stomp points to a clearing ahead. "That is where me and the boys base on our collections.
Xenia follows the others to this same encampment. These half orcs seem to be moving at a quicker pace than our man group who are stolling. She notices another group of 6 half orcs who after a brief discussion start breaking down the camp. They seem to quickly pack up the camp and take off on horse back leading trail ponies with boxes attached to them. They seem to be going off deeper in the wilderness.
Belkior Thursday February 8th, 2007 9:40:05 PM
The halfling cleric keeps walking with the others and Stomp. When they reach the clearing that Stomp identifies as the bandit camp, Belkior redoubles his checking of healing supplies.
"I'm not the one for it. Someone else better go ahead and scout this place out. Or find Xenia ... I bet that that fogue has already got herself into some trouble over there."
Bin Thursday February 8th, 2007 9:50:28 PM
Bin whispers to as many as he can, "It is not good that we just let them leave like that, now they will be on to us and expecting an attack." He looks to the others to see what else they plan.
Wynn d20+6=9 d20+6=21 Thursday February 8th, 2007 11:02:37 PM
The bard stays some 20' behind Angus and Stomp, ready to slide into the bushes if necessary, or to come to the mages assistance if required. Wynn is uneasy about simply walking into the enemies camp and maintains a constant vigil of his surroundings. [Spot=9, Listen=21]
Angus Friday February 9th, 2007 8:02:26 AM
Angus thinks that he has gotten as much out of Stomp as he can and walks over to a tree to relieve himself of some of the wine he drank. On the way he passes Wynn and Belkior and whispers "Time to end this and catch up with the others. What do you think of tieing him to a tree until we get back?"
On the walk back, Angus gauges the reaction of his Shieldmates and get ready for action. Angus also whispers "The sword is magic." Angus puts a hand on Wynn and Belkior shoulders and smiles at Stomp.

LOOT!
... loot ...
Gotta be loot in them boxes. Looks too like they're a definite spook. It's like that one orkie guy who disappeared probs ran ahead to warn these others, telling them that they were maybe followed. They're gonna run back to the safest place they can get to, so's not to risk loosing their loot.
But now the problem gets to be ... to follow the money and let it take you back to the main hideout? Or to take these guys here? Could try and delay them till the others get here. Then, afterward, get the location of their hideout from the ones that survive. Or, could follow them.
Following's pretty simple. But then they'd tell the guys at the hideout about us. If the group takes them here, there's the chance that they wouldn't be able to get the location of the hideout from them. What's more, there's the chance that she might not be able to delay them long enough for the other Shields to catch up.
What to do?
The rogue runs her eyes across the faces to see if the orcie who went missing before is back with this group. If they haven't sent any runners on ahead, it might be best to stop 'em right here. (See spot roll below.)
Sharp of eye, she watches their mouths, especially the ones who seem to be in charge, trying to read their lips. (See spot roll below.)
Follow for now. But in her brain, Xenia begins cooking up a scenario by which she might delay these orcie guys. And hopefully the rest of the Shields are still tracking behind.

Lang continues to move along with the SHields towards wherever Stomp is leading them. He remains wary of both an attack and of Stomp.

Syr Friday February 9th, 2007 8:08:45 PM
Syr listens to Stomp's rattling unfazed. After his ears hear about Giants and Ogres an eyebrow shoots up and he looks in Lan's direction. As the Bugbear does not seem concerned, the elf shrugs briefly and continues striding.
Angus (second illegal post) Friday February 9th, 2007 8:58:13 PM
Angus sees that they have caught up to the trackers (Syr and Lang with Bin in tow) and when they join up, Angus peels Syr off for a moment and whispers "How does that stunning fist of yours work again. I think it might be time for a demonstration."
Angus walks back toward Stomp and introduces the new friends but not by name. "Stomp, these are more of our crew."
DM George Saturday February 10th, 2007 3:08:28 PM
Xenia watches the final pack up and the 1/2 orcs mount their steads. She believes that the 5th missing orc is still with them but can't be 100% positive since see really didn't get a good look at them in the first place. She does realize that tracking them will be easy on horseback but keeping up with them much more difficult while staying hidden.
Stomp leads them along chatting with Angus, "We will first go to my outpost where we work from collecting our taxes. I want to see if the others are there and then we can move on to the main camp. The main camp is quite a hike into the woods. Should take the best part of two days. Hope you brought food and more of that wine."
For clarification, the group is back together now with the exception of Xenia who is somewhere ahead. Lang isn't having any trouble following the trail but hasn't seen any tracks for the rogue.
Angus Saturday February 10th, 2007 4:17:29 PM
Angus is going along merrily, seeing whatever information he can extract from Stomp, although, it seems he has gotten all he can from the lacky.
Angus will fall back slightly from Stomp and hang back with Wynn and Syr "Lets look for a good spot to stash our friend for safekeeping and maybe for questions after we pay the 'outpost' a visit."
Angus will then pay Sunshine a visit and scratch his ears. Angus will whisper to Lang "Once we get to the 'outpost' we will need our recon group (Syr, you, and carrot top)to scout and maybe hit and run depending on their size. Get ready to plan it out. Once Stomp is secure, take Syr and find Xenia and we will follow discreetly."
Xenia d20+15=19 Saturday February 10th, 2007 5:01:53 PM
Maybe Angus can do that Mojo on one of them again. Like he did on Stomp. Yeah. That would loosen the tongue a bit.
So next thing to do is to stop these guys running off. But how ... ?
An idea comes to the rogue, and she takes but a moment to make sure that the Disguise granted by the ring is still on.
"HEY!" She runs out behind them, for all the Wold like Stomp, finally caught up with his group. Xenia waves her arms and signals for quiet. She points back up the trail and then flaps her arm down telling them to dismount.
"THEY'RE ... JUST ... UP ... THE ... TRAIL." The girl rogue whispers, low and hoarse. The voice doesn't sound quite right in her ears. But she keeps at least a good 30 feet away from the nearest one. Hope they ain't too smart. "Ambush," she whispers at their blank faces. "AMBUSH!"
Then she waves for them to follow her.

Wynn d20+12=21 Sunday February 11th, 2007 10:54:33 AM
Wynn begins singing a gentle song about wind swept grasslands and the patterns of clouds, just loud enough for Stomp to hear all the words. [Fascinate - Will save vs DC 21]. Once the leader of the brigands appears to be focussed on the bard and the song, Wynn will suggest that Stomp have a seat by one of the larger trees for it has been a long walk, and it never hurts to stop and rest, maybe even have a brief nap. [Suggestion Will save versus DC16].
Regardless of whether Stomp agrees to have a seat or not, the bard will continue his gentle music in an attempt to continue distracting the half-orc.
Lang & Sunshine Sunday February 11th, 2007 11:47:35 PM
Lang stops when the group gets together. He notices that Xenia is not among them.
"Where is Xenia?"
Lang listens to Angus and his hit and run suggestions. He thinks they definitely need to do more scouting, especially if there are giants and ogres involved.
"Angus, we already know that there are a fair amount of half-orcs. We need a pretty good plan to go up against a larger group than ourselves, especially if there are 2 or more giants and ogres to go along with the half-orcs. How many of those fireballs can you cast each day?"
Syr d20+13=21 d20+11=26 Monday February 12th, 2007 1:30:32 AM
Shaking his head and replying to Angus' terse whisper, "I don't think that'll work, it only last a few seconds. We'll figure something out."
As he trails Wynn and Stomp to the tree, the elf slowly uncoils the length of rope he carries.
If the fascinate spell fails to work or Stomp is away from the tree then Syr shakes his head, "Think anyone else needs a rest over here? Maybe we should sit and talk?"
If Wynn's spell works and Stomp sits down or stands next to the tree, "Wynn, take your rope back, I'm tired of carrying this thing." He tosses the rope to the bard. When Stomp's eyes follow it's flight, he launches his body on top of the half-orc grunting. "I'm gonna hold him against the tree, get that rope around him, quickly. (touch AC 21 grapple 26)
Belkior Monday February 12th, 2007 7:51:05 AM
The halfling cleric stands by as his companions try to subdue Stomp. Mostly, Belkior simply wrings his hands in concern. At least he isn't offering "useful" advice to his companions as they try this. Whatever the result, Belkior is standing ready to heal his companions and ensure that Stomp doesn't die.
When Angus suggests keeping the party split into scouting and a main group, he is a little concerned. But he does have something to offer.
"Can anyone cast Message or a similar spell? So that we can stay in touch with each other, I mean, it would be bad if the scouts got into something they couldn't handle and we weren't there to back them up. I can help a little with support, but please remember that these are living things and I can't attack them. I can support you, but not damage them."
