Into the Glade

On the Twilight Path (DM JohnP)
Monday January 29th, 2007 9:26:30 PM

After seeing what was happening to Thar and Shadow as the pair walked away from the road on the north path, everyone else hurries to catch up. Somehow, it takes longer than it should for the others to reach the scouts and, when they look back, the road seems farther away.

Once they are together, the party starts moving to the north with the scouts ahead. As they move, the wind slows until it barely stirs the falling snow. A hush falls over the landscape as they follow the north path through the edge of a forest. The party doesn't recall seeing woods as thick as this close to the road, adding to the unnatural semblance of this path. Those who looked back and paid careful attention noted that the road seemed fade from sight rather than recede into the distance. The trail that they are following seems to stretch into the distance, much farther than they have walked from the road.

Ahead of the party, the path descends into a heavily wooded glade. Thar is certain that the area near Plateau City doesn't have trees as large as what he sees ahead. The snow seems deeper here, too, and is marked by only the path ahead of them. Despite the large snowflakes that are falling and clinging to their cloaks, everyone can plainly see the tracks left by a horse and cart. Either the snow has only just begun falling here or the carter, somehow, is barely ahead of them because everyone can see that the trail is fresh.

Shadow is listening intently and hears traces of music and singing coming from the glade. He doesn't recognize the tune but it sounds like an elf singing.

The party may find Tyrus if they continue down the path. There is a chance, too, that they might be able to find their way back to the road if they turn around now.

Knowledge Religion, Knowledge Planes or Bardic Knowledge DC 20 - to recall the following information (for this roll only, 5 ranks in one of these skills provides a +2 synergy bonus)
Highlight to display spoiler: {The fey normally reside in either Wold's Cradle (Eberyon's Kingdom) or in the Lands of Shadow with Queen Maab. Of course, there are some weak fey commonly found in the Wold. Sometimes, though, a powerful fey noble can create a "bubble" or "pocket" that is neither completely in the Wold, the Wold's Cradle or Queen's Maab's Lands. Time and nature often proceed strangely in these pockets, much as in the Wold's Cradle. These fey pockets can be both a refuge and a trap since mortals can rarely find their way out without a guide.

It seems that Tyrus, and the party, have stumbled into one such pocket.

Arm wracks his brain to see if he has heard of a phenomenon such as this, but nothing at all comes to mind (bardic knowledge=8). Already having voices his opinion abour turning around, he waits patiently while the others decide where to go, casting glances around for anything out of the ordinary (or MORE out of the ordinary) in the area (spot=7, listen=26).

Thar agrees with Shadow and says "I'm with you. I'd like to know more about this path and where the music is coming from."

He continues forward w/ Shadow and carefully listens to the music (PS = I don't have my sheet in front of me, as its at home on laptop, but I think Thar's Relig is +4, so my Religion Check is ~ 21)and realizes that it is some sort of dimensional pocket that a powerful fey creature has created and is outside normal time and bounds. "This Ginny must be pretty poweful to have made this on her own. I'd say we continue forward, but exercise extreme caution. Also, we need to be careful and somehow mark our path, as we mortals have difficult times finding our ways back home from these pockets."

Tuesday January 30th, 2007 5:20:53 PM

Kadaz has heard of the strange traps that dot the countryside. "I agree with Thar. We must be very careful." Plateau City seems very far away right now. And all these trees seems very omnious. He grips his axe tighter.

Mira
Tuesday January 30th, 2007 10:49:45 PM

Mira's knowledge is in the realm of magics, but not the kind of magics she is now experiencing. "These are nature magics, right?" she asks Thar. "Are they dangerous?" The sorcerer finds the clean wintery whiteness and the music oddly romantic, and shifts closer to the bard. "Come, Arm," she invites, "are you not curious?"

At Thar's suggestion Mira frowns, "the snow would likely hide any trail of dropped things, and I do not think we should mar the bark of these great trees, ominous though they are." Turning to her companions, she asks, "doesn anyone have anything we could use to make a mark on these trees? To mark our coming?"

A Familiar Guide (DM JohnP)
Wednesday January 31st, 2007 8:32:47 AM

DM APology - Sorry, missed posting last night.

The party mills about after Thar realizes what has occurred. They wonder about some method of marking their path down into the glade in case the cart tracks become obscured by the snow. Realizing that it's probably not a good idea to make blazes on the bark of the trees in a fey glade, Mira inquires whether anyone else has something to make a mark. The sorcerer also recalls the children's tale of wanderers in a fey wood who marked their trail with bread crumbs, only to have them eaten by birds.

Finally, someone comes up with some chalk or string to mark the trees beside the path and the party moves ahead. The trail leads them down into the glade, moving between the large pine and beech trees. There are still many golden-brown leaves on the branches of the beech trees that rustle in the wind. Occasionally, slender birch trees are visible among the other trees. Each of the trees, particularly the birch trees, seem to glow with reflected light from a large fire that is now visible in the centre of the glade. The flickering flames cast dancing shadows through the woods but the trees still block sight of whoever is singing.

Now, the party sees a grey lump on the trail ahead of them. When they approach, they see that a grey cat sits on the trail. When the party gets within 10 feet of the cat, it stnads and turns to walk down the trail after giving a shake of its tail. If the party lags or pauses, the cat stops and looks over its shoulder at them before shaking its tail again.

As they near the central clearing in the glade, the party can see more of the gathering there. A large fire burns in the centre of the glade while a boar's carcass turns on a spit above it. Two long rows of tables flank the fire and people seem to be sitting at the tables. In the dim light beyond the fire, they catch glimpses of a cart.

Then, after going around a final cluster of small birch trees, the party can see the entire clearing. The two rows of tables flank an open area beyond the fire. At the far end of this open area, under the spreading branches of a great pine tree, a woman clad all in grey sits upon a great chair made of some gleaming white wood. The chair is raised slightly over the open area so that the woman looks down upon the men and women sitting silently at the tables. Around the base of the chair are a cluster of people but the party cannot tell much about them.

The cat stops leading the party and turns towards them. By now, the party recognizes the grey cat that they rescued from the hounds at the Grey Owl Inn. After licking a paw, the cat looks up at the party and yawns. Hardly anyone is surprised when the cat speaks to them.

"My Lady awaits. Approach so that you may be greeted in the manner that you have shown to others."

Shadow
Wednesday January 31st, 2007 9:29:39 AM

After what has happened to him in the last year, Shadow is not too surprised when the cat starts talking to them. He does worry about what the cat says about 'the manner that you have shown others'. He feels that he has helped much more than harmed, but does not know how the 'Ginny' will think of it. He will definitely not be the first, but does not hesitate too long to be the last.

With the group he will move forward.

His scouting duties over, Thar looks around at the people and tries to see if he recognizes anyone. He also looks around the opening, trying to get a good feel for anything that is out of the ordinary.

He then walks toward the woman, but remains silent, knowing that diplomacy is not his strong point. He looks toward Ed and Mira, waiting for them to start the conversation.

Kadaz

Kadaz looks around the clearing very carefully. This is weird.

Birdie looks intently at the cat, his tail wagging. He looks at the cat, then Kadaz. "No boy, better stay here" Kadaz warns.

The tattooed fighter is momentarily caught off stride by the talking cat, but manages to regain his composure and steps forward. "Conner Baelson ma'am" he replies. "We're looking for a lost carter, goes by the name Tyrus...worried about his well being and the supplies he carries for the orphanage."

Conner ends his introduction abruptly, waiting for some kind of response from either the lady or perhaps the missing carter. He hopes he hasn't soured the milk for his companions by being too brusk [Diplomacy = 0]

Arm bows to the cat and says, "Thank you for your assistance.".

Taking Mira's hand, he approaches to woman's chair. When they get a few feet away, he bows deeper this time and says, "We are sorry for the intrusion, m'lady...yes, it is true that we seek Tyrus, as we were commissione to do so. He was carrying Midwinter gifts for the children of the orphanage...children that we have grown quite fond of, as well as the proprietors. If Tyrus has done anything to offend, please rest assured that we are not in league with him...we only seek to aid the orphanage."(diplomacy=30) He then squeezes Mira's hand gently as if to say, "If you have anything else to add, now would be the time".

Approaching Ginny (DM JohnP0
Thursday February 1st, 2007 8:52:55 AM

The party mills about for a short time before responding to the cat's words. Here in the lands of the fey, many strange things may occur. Perhaps it was very wise that no one harmed the trees that shelter the glade. And a really good idea that Kadaz has Birdie under control.

As their eyes grow accustomed to the flickering light of the great fire, the party can see more of the clearing. Arrayed around the edge of the clearing are a number of snug cabins nestled under the snow. Plumes of smoke curl from chimneys to be swept away by the wind, becoming lost in the snow. But farther from the fire, under the cold bare branches of the beech trees, Thar can spot meaner lean-tos and shacks. Huddled inside and around these crude dwellings are a small number of men and women.

Recalling everything that he knows of the fey, Thar notes some other things that confirm his opinion that the party has followed Tyrus into a realm of the fey. Despite the constantly swirling snow, the party's tracks never seem to be filled and the snow covering the ground never gets any deeper.

More significantly, he recognizes many of the beings who cluster around the white chair occupied by Ginny - the beggar outside Plateau City, the old woman on the road, one of the oldsters from the tavern. There are others there too, both animal and humanoid. And all of them are looking at the party.

Finally, Conner strides forth and addresses Ginny. Arm follows in his wake, explaining their mission. Ginny nods from her high white chair then speaks in a rich, strong voice. Her speech is tinged with archaic usages but she is clearly knowledgeable of happenings in the Wold. She nods to the two who have introduced themselves.

"It has been some time since anyone sought my hearthfire."

"Welcome, Conner Baelson. You are plain spoken but honor the forms."

"Welcome, too, Armathen Ebano. You are eloquent, sir."

"But there are others who need to introduce themselves before they can be welcomed."

Ginny then looks expectantly at the remainder of the party.

Feeling a little chastised and hoping his hesitation does not cause a problem, Shadow approaches the Ginny and says, "Analiiat Bashil, m'lady" taking the form from Arm and does his best bow (which is not very good). Shadow is a little too intimidated to really say more.

He then steps back and awaits the rest of the group's introductions and her response.

Edmund surveys the scene and finally begins to admit to himself that maybe, just maybe, there is something to these rumours of Frost Ginny. He steps forward a little bit, bows genteely, and says,

"Edmund Eustace Greenleaf the Second, at your service--researcher and... rhetorician of the Mithril Order--oh, and Wizard-at-Large as well." (Diplomacy=20)

Mira follows the talking grey cat. That it has a voice at first startles her, but then she tries to strike up a conversation with the feline. "What are you called in these parts?" she asks, "do you have a name?"

Mira is thinking of asking the creature if it belongs to anyone, or has a companion, when she relizes she has been addressed by the woman on the dias of sorts.

"Dear madam," says Mira, paying full attention to the woman on the dias, "I am called Mira, Mira Silver." Mira takes a breath to gauge the party's reception. "Me and my companions," the sorcerer opens her hands away from her body, and in the direction of Kadaz, Conner, Shadow, Thar, Edmund, and Arm, "me and my companions are keeping an eye on the orphans in yon manor for their patrons, the Crimson Shield's who reside in Floating City. A delivery of goods intended for the children has gone astray, and we seek it, and the carter charged with its delivery." (Diplomacy=22)

Mira tries to make eye contact with the woman, and gauge her reception of the group. (Sense Motive=3, blah!) The mage is, however distracted by the people clustered about the dias.

Having Introduced Yourselves (DM JohnP)
Friday February 2nd, 2007 9:25:42 AM

Sorry, again, folks. An early start at work this morning, followed by coming home to look after my children.

Frost Ginny inclines her head as each member of the Mithril Guard steps forward to introduce themselves.

Welcome to each of you - Analiiat Bashil, Thar ail Baerer, Edmund Eustace Greenleaf the Second, Kadaz Guardson and Mira Silver."

"And I am Gwenever, Mistress of Winter Glade. Though some know me simply as Ginny. I care not if they take liberties with my name, I ask solely that they remember those qualities that separate man from the beasts."

"If thou had not deigned to introduce yourselves, I would have sent thee to stand with those with cold and stiff hearts who will not listen."

Gwenever (or Ginny) motions towards the figures huddled near the rough buildings far from the fire.

"Now that thee hath observed the simplest forms, thou art welcome to join my table. Unless, as you say, you have pressing business."

Edmund and Mira together state that the party has pressing business with retrieving the Midwinter supplies for the orphanage. Gwenever leans sideways to whisper to the figures near her. The beggar from outside the gates of Plateau City moves forward and speaks.

"He cursed me when I asked for charity. Not like most of you."

In turn some other figures that the party recognizes from their trip from the City to the orphanage take their turns, enumerating how Tyrus failed to be hospitable and charitable. It ends with the cat which has not moved from near the party.

"He threw a stone at me." The cat then looks up at Mira and seems to smile. "Of course I have a name, young one. Hereabouts I am known as Gray Tabby Mouse-eater, Leaper-at-Shadows, Master of the Eastern Doorstep and the Night Hearth, Slayer of Fearsome Beasts and Lizards, Firstborne of the Seventh Litter of the the Great Fistandibulus the Master Mouser of the Realm and boon Companion of our Lady in her troubles, Beloved of Winston of Oshirr House. That is only the honorifics, and only to the first generation. But I sense that you do not have time for more."

"You may refer to me as Mouser."

In the pause that follows, Gwenever smiles at the voluble cat. Then she gestures to a group of people standing around the edge of the clearing, neither at the tables nor out in the cold.

"Suffice to say, this Tyrus Carter travelled to my glade where he shall learn of his errors and how to properly hospitable. He has introduced himself and begged our hospitality. But he not yet chosen whether to join my table, or listen to the frost in his heart and enter the forest. Like the others, there, he lingers betwixt and between. He is not yet ready to leave my Glade."

"The goods for the children, I would like to see them delivered. I am fond of them and hope for them. Take what you will, if you choose. But leave Tyrus to his lessons."

Gwenever pauses for a moment, then continues.

"To mark the season, though, you may essay to win his release. If you so choose, entertain our court. If your performance merits it, you shall win his release."

"If not, Mouser there will show you to the cart and guide you back to the road."

"I am no bard, like my friend here," Mira says, but I do know the words of a song that puts me in mind of Mouser, here." Mira starts to clap her gloved hands. "I can not lay claim to the composition," she adds as she claps, "I first heard it sung by a bard named Jethro Tull."

"...And The Mouse Police Never Sleeps"

Muscled, black with steel-green eye
swishing through the rye grass
with thoughts of mouse-and-apple pie.
Tail balancing at half-mast.
...And the mouse police never sleeps ---
lying in the cherry tree.
Savage bed foot-warmer of purest feline ancestry.
Look out, little furry folk!
He's the all-night working cat.
Eats but one in every ten ---
leaves the others on the mat.
...And the mouse police never sleeps ---
waiting by the cellar door.
Window-box town crier;
birth and death registrar.
With claws that rake a furrow red ---
licensed to multilate.
From warm milk on a lazy day
to dawn patrol on hungry hate.
...No, the mouse police never sleeps ---
climbing on the ivy.
Windy roof-top weathercock.
Warm-blooded night on a cold tile.

At the cat's speech, Edmund breaks into a delighted smile. "Marvelous creature!" he declares enthusiastically, "Paragon of creation!"

Edmund bows a second time, even more deeply, to the cat. "At your service, and your family's!" he says.

When it comes time to perform, Edmund thinks for a moment or two. "You won't want me to sing," he says wryly, "But I think I can turn a verse or two for the occasion."

Clearing his throat, Edmund raises one hand a bit, and begins to speak in a dignified and careful manner,

"The feline, domesticated, cannot be compared
With other less intelligent beasts.
This is why mice, wild, are frequently scared
And frequently part of Cat's feasts!

Though mousetraps are made for the catching of mice,
And the elimination, costly, of rodents thereof,
To employ a cat incurs a much smaller price
For it can catch mice with its own clawed glove!

Nature may build a better mouse
If man builds a better mousetrap.
But I'd rather have, in my own house
A cat, at my side, whilst I nap.

So in the end, a cat is the only choice
For thinking creatures the go on two feet.
And so to the praise of cats I give voice,
Thus so saying, I conclude this fete!

With a smile, he takes a step backward and gives Mouser a quick wink.

With that Shadow picks up four small rocks and begins to juggle them. He will have them going in a simple circle, then into a more complex figure eight. He will then pick up yet another one while he continues to juggle the other four and adds it to his more complex figure created by the stones. Then he has all 5 disappear one at a time (simply putting them up his sleeve when he has the groups attention on the other ones) until he has one left and then it seems to magically turn into piece of dried fish and a small emerald. "What do we have here? Well it looks like a piece of dried fish for our wonderful guide." He places the dried fish in front of the gray cat. "And a very small gem that matches the color of the forest around us when it is not covered in this wonderful whiteness. I would offer it to you powerful mistress, but I do not mean to offend or bribe." With that he will bow and if approach Ginny if she desires the gem or will slide it back in his pouch. He will then back up and when the eyes of the crowd are on another he will drop the stones out of his sleeve.

"Mistress Gwenever, Master Mouser. Here is a song I learned as a youth, concerning another feline. It is titled Cat and is by the great bard Tolkien.

Cat

The fat cat on the mat
may seem to dream
of nice mice that suffice
for him, or cream;
but he free, maybe,
walks in thought
unbowed, proud, where loud
roared and fought
his kin, lean and slim,
or deep in den
in the East feasted on beasts
and tender men.
The giant lion with iron
claw in paw,
and huge ruthless tooth
in gory jaw;
the pard dark-starred,
fleet upon feet,
that oft soft from aloft
leaps upon his meat
where woods loom in gloom --
far now they be,
fierce and free,
and tamed is he;
but fat cat on the mat
kept as a pet
he does not forget.

Kadaz does his best, but mumbles, looks down at his feet, forgets the words, and has to restart. But at least he tries.(perform -2)

The Tomcat's Strut (DM JohnP)
Monday February 5th, 2007 10:17:18 PM

One by one, the party members attempt to persuade Gwenever to release Tyrus from his term of rehabilitation. The fey court look at one another with grins on their faces, perhaps because a new amusement in this glade is something to be cherished.

Mira explains away her voice, but manages to perfectly catch the tone and tempo of the song. As she sings, Mouser sits up straight and then cleans his paws in an ostentatious manner.

"Excellent selection my dear," whispers the fey cat. "I admire your choice of songs."

When Edmund begins his song the cat settles down and watches the wizard with what can only be described as a smug expression. It soon becomes evident that Mouser is nodding in time with the poem.

"An excellent selection, most excellent. Perhaps I should tell you some time about how I became the Champion Mouser of the Cradle. Would you like to hear that?"

Mouser settles down and seems disappointed that Arm, Thar and Conner do not choose to extol his virtues. He stares at the three of them, perhaps making mental notes that these people may not appreciate his feline virtues. The rest of the court, though, do appreciate their efforts and some seem to be laughing at Mouser. When Shadow starts juggling, everyone watches, including Mouser.

Finally, Kadaz' recitation is greeted by Mouser with a languid stretch and mincng steps towards the dwarf.

"There's hope for you. Have you considered losing the dog?"

When the performances conclude, Gwenever claps her hands and, after a moment, the rest of the court follows suit. The sound seems foreign in this clearing and the blanket of snow on everything seems to muffle the sound. Still, everyone notes that even some of the people seated at the tables are smiling.

"Enough! You have proven your case! The carter Tyrus is free to accompany you, if he chooses. Come forth, Tyrus, to meet your champions!"

The bearded man standing on the edge of the clearing seems to awaken and then slowly steps towards the fire and the party. As he moves closer to the warmth, he becomes quicker and more enlivened. When he comes up to the party, his face breaks into an unaccustomed smile.

"Thank you! Thank you! It's ... hard for me to say this, but thank you so much. Please, let's get my pony Ashcan and get out of here!"

As he implores the party, Gwenever stirs on her throne. She glowers at the carter and motions him to come towards her.

"Remember this, mortal. This release is but a reprieve, a parole. My glade will welcome you again if you should not learn from this. Be warned, or be ready to come back. Now, off with you."

Her voice mellows when she speaks to the party.

"As I said, it has been some time since anyone sought my glade. You care deeply for these children if you would brave the trip. I understand that, for I feel the same. Take this mortal and deliver the Midwinter cheer to the children."

"Mouser shall be your guide from the glade. I bid you farewell."

The big grey tomcat struts to the party, his tail held erect in the air. He looks up at the party and speaks to them.

"I will lead you true, you cat lovers. Remember your manners, though."

Tuesday February 6th, 2007 5:47:50 AM

On the way back, Arm says to Master Mouser, "I noticed that you did not particularly approve of my performance, perhaps because it wasn't about you? I sincerely apologize for that, but I assumed that too much flattery could be considered false after a while, and we speak nothing but the truth to yourself and Ginny. I would hope that you'd remember that I was one of the first ones to draw my weapon and come to your aid when you were menaced by the dogs at the Owl, however, as respect sometimes takes on a face that more than words can say." (diplomacy=26).

To Tyrus, he is a bit more gruff, "I hope this is a lesson to you, sir. Be more aware of the feelings of those around you, as you'll never know when you may meet up with them again.". After a moments introspection, he realizes that HE has been guilty of that same offense from time to time, but he chooses to keep silent about that for now.

Conner
Tuesday February 6th, 2007 7:43:56 AM

Conner helps Tyrus hitch up Ashcan to the cart and prepares to depart. As he passes Ginny he brings a closed right fist gently up to his left breast in a subtle salute. "If we can be of service in the future, you can call upon us in Plateau City. Ask for the Mithril Order."

Shadow  d20=1
Tuesday February 6th, 2007 9:32:17 AM

Shadow admires all the performances and is taken by surprise when the Ginny and the rest applaud their efforts. He did not expect this even though he knows the group did their best, but would not be called to court anytime soon.

"Ginny, we appreciate your generosity and hope that you find what ever it is you need or want." Shadow knows this is a poor attempt at diplomacy, but he usually does not provide any type of diplomacy. (diplomacy=1)

Thar
Tuesday February 6th, 2007 11:33:32 AM

As they are leaving, Thar says to Ginny "Madam, it was my pleasure to be meet you and if you ever need my assistance, either as a ranger or healer type, please contact me and I will be glad to help. In addition, I echo Conner's comments about our group being willing to be of service to you."

To their new feline friend, Thar bends down, gives it a piece of dried meat as an offering and says "I am not a poet, but if I was one, your majesty would be the subject of my first writing."

To Tyrus, he comments sternly "You have been lucky this time and even though you've been saved by our intervention, don't assume it will be so easy next time. Treat with respect those who are less fortunate than yourself."

"Want to lead with me Shadow?" Thar says, as he politely follows the cat out of the forest glen.

Edmund
Tuesday February 6th, 2007 12:02:32 PM

Edmund smiles happily when the efforts of the members of the Order pay off. Yet, he isn't entirely in a hurry to leave the glade, and only goes regretfully, following after Mouser whom, Edmund has decided, is a capital fellow in every regard.

Kadaz  d20+7=15
Tuesday February 6th, 2007 2:32:03 PM

Since the lady was gracious about his poor recitation efforts, Kadaz bows in appreciation. He then turns to bow at the cat. He puts his hand down on Birdie's head and mutters "Better behave yourself, stay by my side." (handle animal 15)

Birdie eyes the cat very carefully, confused about a cat that talks like a person. But he obeys and stays by Kadaz's side.

Mira
Tuesday February 6th, 2007 9:14:38 PM

Mira follows behind Arm, and adds her voice to his when he cautions Tyrus. "You shall have an opportunity to redeem yourself! You shall play the role of gift-giver to the children!" Mira winks at Arm, "and if you do it right, we shall have Kay feed you, and then we shall set you free."

Mira bows low to Ginny, and it is with some regret that she turns her back on the magical place.

As the party follow mouser, she addresses the feline, "perhaps, if I am very lucky, I shall attract an animal friend as companionable as yourself."

Looking for a Pony (DM JohnP)
Tuesday February 6th, 2007 11:05:55 PM

Ginny absently acknowledges those who bid farewell to her while she speaks to her court. The people seated around the table variously nod or wave when the party prepares to depart.

Tyrus seems too grateful to be daunted by the admonitions, but he does nearly continually murmur commitments to improve his behaviour in the future. The carter is actually more concerned with finding his cart, getting Ashcan and getting out of the glade. The party follows him to the edge of the clearing where the cart has been left. All the while, Mouser twines about the legs of the party and keeps up a running monologue.

"I promised to tell you about how I became the Champion Mouser. Well, it was quite the story but I probably have time to tell you, don't I. Back then I was young and very full of myself, thought I was the greatest cat ever. With age, I've mellowed and changed my ways. Anyway, there I was, taking a journey through one of the side routes within the Queen's realm when I got tired. There happened to be a nice pile of grain bags there because it was a part of the realm where they stored that sort of thing. Anyway, they were warm and soft and I made myself a little nest there. A nice little nest and I laid down. well, along came the biggest mouse ever. Bigger than a house, he was, that mouse. So, thinking quickly, I decided that I didn't have a chance of killing that house mouse by attacking it. Not that I had a choice because that mouse came up and started eating the grain. So I laid really still down inside a bag. And the mouse swallowed me, if you believe it! Well, that gave me the chance I needed for I started clawing my way out. Well, I managed to kill that great mouse. Which turned out to be a monster that had been threatening the realm and the Queen, well, she named my Champion Mouser for what I did."

By now Tyrus has checked the contents of the cart and is looking for Ashcan. The pony is nowhere in sight, the only sign being a set of tracks leading off into the trees. Again, despite the swirling snow, Thar thinks that he will have no problem following the tracks because they aren't being filled in.

When it is pointed out to him, Mouser stops speaking and looks at where the tracks lead into the trees.

"Oh my. My. Oh dear. This is bad. Someone was supposed to mind the pony, or take him back to the road. Now he's wandered off. We better find him soon."

The party looks at the thick woods where the pony's tracks lead and prepare to retrieve the horse. This might be dangerous, or it might not, but it is sensible to take precautions.

Wednesday February 7th, 2007 6:32:10 AM

Kadaz believes that Master Mouser probably knows what he is talking about. He makes sure his armor and shield are properly placed and runs his hand up and down the axe handle to make sure it will move smoothly when needed. "More giant mice, Master Mouser?" he asks with a smile.

Thar
Wednesday February 7th, 2007 5:43:35 PM

Tilting his head towards Shadow with his usual "Wanna have some fun scouting?" look, Thar will attempt to track where the Pony could have wandered off to. If the snow isn't covering up tracks, the pony's current location should be easily found.

He'll be cautious though while following the tracks, remembering that possible danger could appear at any moment and ready to battle if needed.

He will ensure that he remains close to the party, since slugging it out alone with an enemy isn't something that he relishes.

(OOC = John, I'm from a public PC at the library and don't have my stick drive w/ Thar on it. But I wanted to do a Spot and Tracking check. Thar does have the tracking feat though and a high modifier on both his wisdom and spot rolls.)

Mira
Wednesday February 7th, 2007 7:50:36 PM

Mira listens to Mouser's tale, a smile playing on her lips all the while. The story-telling cat is cut from the same cloth as the party wizard, she thinks to herself.

The woman wonders what other adventures lie in store for the party before they exit the enchanted wood?

Conner
Wednesday February 7th, 2007 8:14:51 PM

The burly human takes his leave from the glade, only to be sidetracked by a lost pony. "Hope Ashcan isn't someone's lunch" he muses in a low voice. Conner fixes his shield to his left forearm and slides a single javelin from his quiver. The javelin rests comfortably in his large hands and proves it's usefulness in pushing aside any stray branches that cross his path.

Stalking through the Snow (DM JohnP)  d20+12=20 d20+8=20
Wednesday February 7th, 2007 10:16:16 PM

Led by Thar and Shadow, the party follows the trail of the pony through the deep snow. Tyrus is clearly concerned about the pony and walks near the front of the party. The ranger is easily able to follow the tracks where the pony moved through the woods, possibly seeking a sheltered spot where grass might be exposed.
DM - Rolled for Thar: Spot = 20, Survival (Track) = 20

The rest of the party trudge through the snow. Mouser doesn't respond to Kadaz' jibe, turning his nose up and ignoring the dwarf and his dog. Everyone is able to spot the tracks that join with those of the pony, booted feet that seem to be following the pony. The party hears an exclamation from Mouser walking near the back of the party.

"Oh dear. These look like cold ones, ones that have wandered away from the clearing. You had better hurry."

It's not long after that Arm hears some moaning from a thick grove of trees ahead of them and Thar notices some movement. Inside the grove, Ashcan has been cornered by some humanoid figures wearing frost-rimed, tattered clothes. The pony seems unharmed but the intent of the cold ones is evident. Tyrus, however, hasn't noticed yet.

The party can choose to charge in, sneak in, or attack from a distance.

Edmund, upon seeing the cold ones in the glade, does the first sensible thing which comes to mind--he puts one of his new spells to work. Clutching a small piece of leather from his spell pouch in his hand, he gestures quickly in the air with it.

"Arma Magum!" he whispers emphatically, one hand moving to thump his chest to initiate the Mage Armour effect. Then, he takes up a position as close to the centre of the group as he can, as usual, trying to surround himself with human shiel--er, dependable allies.

Battle in the Clearing - Round 0 (DM JohnP)
Thursday February 8th, 2007 11:18:18 PM

The party creeps closer to the clearing where the Cold Ones are threatening the carter's pony. The Cold Ones are covered from head to toe in frost, even to small icicles hanging from their beards, hair and clothing. Even though they don't seem to carry any weapons, their intent for the pony is obvious.

The party members begin preparations, including casting preparatory spells. Edmund casts a protective magic, while Kadaz activates his Tattoo. Shadow creeps ahead to find a spot to shoot from while Thar protects himself. Finally, Mira casts Haste to give everyone in the party an added boost. Then Conner steps into the clearing and confronts the creatures.
OOC - Haste is a group spell, consider everyone and animals affected.

Arm holds back. By now, Tyrus has seen what is occurring and he bellows, "Ashcan!", before charging into the clearing. The Cold Ones turn after hearing both Conner and this this new threat. The two rearmost turn to deal with Tyrus and Conner.

(OOC - Choose a square on the bottom or sides of the clearing, outside the ring of trees. From that spot, either move to engage the Cold Ones or attack from a distance.)

Sunday February 11th, 2007 6:47:18 PM

Arm creeps ahead into a gap in the trees and levels his crossbow at the closest of the Cold Ones threatening the pony. His bolt flies true and hits the creature.

Taking advantage of the spell cast by Mira, Kadaz charges across the clearing and attacks one of the two Cold Ones threatening Tyrus. His axe bites deeply into the creature, but seems to do less damage than expected.

Shadow levels his bow and hits the same Cold One. Kadaz sees the arrow strike the creature but it appears to do no damage.

Following in Kadaz's path, Thar also moves to engage the other Cold One. His shortswords flash out and he scores a hit with his main weapon. The second sword almost catches but slides off the creature's frozen clothing.
DM Note - Extra attack provided by Haste is only when making a Full Attack without movement.

Conner charges in and launches a javelin at one of the Cold Ones. It strikes squarely but seems to do very little damage. Edmund runs around the other side of the clearing to flank the creatures.

Mira stands just outside, considering her strategy.

Everyone is surprised, to some degree, when a bundle of grey fur streaks from the trees and twists through the legs of the Cold Ones before leaping onto the back of the pony. Hissing and spitting, Mouser appears to be daring the Cold Ones to approach closer.

Tyrus, seeing his path blocked and not having a weapon, moves to circle around the Cold Ones. Hopefully they will all move to face the threat posed by the party.

Most of the Cold Ones continue to try to reach the pony. However, only two can get close. When they try to grab the pony, Mouser's claws flash out to fend off the attacks.

The Cold One [#6] hit by Arm's crossbow bolt turns and lumbers slowly across the clearing towards the bard. Similarly, the creature hit by Conner turns and advances on the fighter. It is able to reach Conner to swing a frost-rimed fist, just missing.

The Cold One hit by Thar's sword opens its mouth and breathes a mixture of ice and frigid air into the ranger's face. The ice crystals sting any exposed skin, possibly slowing Thar's ability to fight.
Breath weapon deals 4 cold damage, DC 13 Reflex for half damage. Failing the save also means -4AC and -2 Attack for 1 round.

The other Cold One does the same to Kadaz, blowing ice and frigid air at the dwarf.
Breath weapon deals 4 cold damage, DC 13 Reflex for half damage. Failing the save also means -4AC and -2 Attack for 2 rounds.

In between, Conner thrusts his spiked shield at the frosted figure, hoping to impale it. [Hit AC=25, 28, and 22 for 12, 8, and 10 HP respectively]

Monday February 12th, 2007 2:01:40 PM

Edmund dashes forward into the clearing (to J-9), takes aim at the cluster of cold ones, and thusts the wand out towards them, closing his eyes as he does so. (Rod of Wonder = 37)

With an explosive crackle that causes Edmund's hair to stand on end, a lightning bolt shoots from the end of the wand towards the unfortunate creatures. (17 Damage, Reflex Save DC 15 for half)

((I'm not certain how this "Lightning Bolt" spell is targetted. The bolt is 70ft. long and 5ft. wide--does it fill a row or column, or is it still targetted on square intersections? That would result in a 10ft wide bolt, so I assume not. Anyway, the desired area of effect, if possible, is a 70ft. line from K-9 to X-9, the last of which seems to be occupied by some sort of tree.))

When Edmund opens his eyes to survey the results of the Rod, he stares in disbelief.

"It really IS wonderful!" he exclaims with delight.

The first blows have been exchanged as the party attempts to rescue Ashcan from the these Cold Ones, people that have wandered far from Gwenever's clearing into the cold fey woods.

Conner slides his longsword from its sheath and swings at the Cold One in front of him. The fighter hits it easily but the frozen flesh of the creature is not damaged as much as Conner expected. The follow-up bash with the shield also only partly damages the creature.
DM Note -- Draw (without movement) is Move Equivalent, so only one primary attack and the shield.

Hoping to protect her lover by melting the Cold One advancing on Arm, Mira moves towards it from near Arm. Her spell melts all of the frost from the thing and then causes what looks like extra damage to it's cold flesh. But the thing isn't down, yet.

Arm fires another bolt at the Cold One and watches his shot hit the creature dead centre, even with the distraction of his loved one standing next to the thing. But the Cold One seems to take no damage from the bolt.

On the other side of the clearing, Shadow has the same experience of seeing his arrow cleanly hit the Cold One but not do more than glance from its frozen covering.

Kadaz gets a face full of ice fragments but chops back at the Cold One. He is a bit sluggish from the cold but manages to keep fighting. His first swing is wide of the target but his next two hit the Cold One and drop it.
DM Note - First roll was natural 1, so missed regardless of AC.

Thar is more fortunate, avoiding the worst of the Cold One's frozen breath, and hitting it twice. Unfortunately, his shortswords do little more than pierce the thing's frozen shell and cannot hit anything vital.

Displaying a rather more aggressive approach than usual, Edmund approaches the cluster of Cold Ones and holds out his new rod. To his wonder and amazement, a bolt of electricity shoots forth to strike the rearmost Cold Ones and then continues to scorch through the trees. Fortunately, none of his companions were in the path of the bolt.
DM Note -- Lightning Bolt is a "line" spell. Targetting is by drawing a line from any corner of the square occupied by Edmund towards the targets. It affects any creature occupying a square that the line passes through. In this case, it was I placed the line so it passed through #'s 5, 8, 4 and 1.

++++++

The Cold Ones hit by the Lightning Bolt swing towards the wizard and start advancing. Fortunately for Edmund, the tree branches prevented the closest one from reaching and being able to attack.

The remaining Cold Ones continue to try to get past the defence provided by Mouser. The cat is growling quite formidably and managing to keep the pony from harm. Tyrus pushes his way through the tree to reach Ashcan, crying with concern for his pony.

The Cold One [#3] in front of Conner blows a 10 foot cone of ice shards and frigid air at the fighter but doesn't swing its fists.
2 points Cold damage, DC 13 Reflex save for half. Failing save means 3 rounds of --4 to AC and --2 Attack.

Cold One [#6] turns to the closer and greater danger presented by Mira and opens its mouth to blow ice and frigid air at the sorcerer.
3 points Cold damage, DC 13 Reflex save for half. Failing save means 3 rounds of --4 to AC and --2 Attack.

The Cold One [#7] in front of Thar swings both fists at the ranger but neither attack comes close.
Cold One #7 -- first attack misses AC 14, second attack misses AC 12

DM Note -- Treat the trees (spiky green things as "Difficult Terrain" that costs double to move through, but also provides Concealment.

Conner manages to duck beneath the frost creature's attack and is only lightly injured by the ice shards and frigid cold.[Reflex=15]

Years of training take over as the tattooed soldier slips easily into a pattern of deadly movements punctuated by fast and efficient bladework. First he strikes upward with the blade of his longsword, and then, without hestitation, he spins and drives the sword backwards and into the creature's torso. Completing the spin, he drives his shield up and into the cold one, impaling the creature on the deadly shield spikes. It is all over in an instant. [Hit AC=28 and 31 (24 to confirm critical) with longsword and AC=30 (25 to confirm critical) with shield bash for 12+18+17 HP]

Edmund (AC: 12, HP: 33/33) Mage Armour, Haste
Tuesday February 13th, 2007 12:23:24 AM

Edmund's initial delight melts from his face with a comic absurdity which might be amusing if his situation was not so dire. As not one but four of the frosty creatures descend upon him, he realises his action was not, perhaps, the most prudent of all possible options.

After goggling at the Cold Ones a bit, he manages to declare, "Discretion is the better part of valour!"

Upon saying this, Edmund does what he does best: he turns and runs (to A-20). (Withdraw)

((Withdraw will allow Edmund to move double his speed which is already doubled to 60ft. from Haste, thus 120ft. Doing so, he will move to the northeast and then south around the clearing to A-20, which should use up his total distance.))

Trying to figure out why his attacks have had little affect, Thar quickly tries to remember what could be stopping him from injuring them.

Know(Nature) = 13

Sadly, he can't remember what it is that could pierce the creatures resistance. He yells "Anyone got any ideas on how to take these things out? I've only scratched him!"

Frustrated at his ineffective attacks, he decides to take a chance and casts "Spiritual Weapon" in the form of a Short Sword and orders it to attack the creature.

1. Spiritual Weapon

Rounds = 3/3

Attack = +5BAB +5 Wisdom = 28
Dmg (force/spell damage that bypasses DR) = 1d8+1=7

(A weapon made of pure force springs into existence and attacks opponents at a distance, as you direct it, dealing 1d8 force damage per hit, +1 point per three caster levels (maximum +5 at 15th level). The weapon takes the shape of a weapon favored by your deity or a weapon with some spiritual significance or symbolism to you (see below) and has the same threat range and critical multipliers as a real weapon of its form. It strikes the opponent you designate, starting with one attack in the round the spell is cast and continuing each round thereafter on your turn. It uses your base attack bonus (possibly allowing it multiple attacks per round in subsequent rounds) plus your Wisdom modifier as its attack bonus. It strikes as a spell, not as a weapon, so, for example, it can damage creatures that have damage reduction. As a force effect, it can strike incorporeal creatures without the normal miss chance associated with incorporeality. The weapon always strikes from your direction. It does not get a flanking bonus or help a combatant get one. Your feats or combat actions do not affect the weapon. If the weapon goes beyond the spell range, if it goes out of your sight, or if you are not directing it, the weapon returns to you and hovers)

Conner whirls and spins, cutting into the frozen body of the Cold One with his sword. The frozen thing falls into the snow, crimson blood slowly leaking from the gaping wounds.

Realizing that he now has the attention of the creatures and presumably saved Ashcan, Edmund spins and runs around the outside of the clearing.

Arm charges up beside Mira and stabs at the Cold One that has just breathed on the sorcerer. Without the frozen covering, it is far easier to hit and injure the Cold One but its body still is not damaged as much as it should.

Seeing that his arrows aren't doing much to the creatures, Shadow drops his bow and moves to engage the Cold One that Thar is fighting. The rogue hits with his rapier but does no damage.

Thar casts a spell to attack the Cold One, avoiding any distraction. The magical force hits the creature and is not absorbed. Then the dwarf steps in, swinging his axe. When Kadaz finishes, the Cold One is laying in pieces in the snow.

After being partly frozen by the Cold One's breath, Mira casts a protective spell on herself.

The lone Cold One threatening Ashcan cannot get past the claws of Mouser but it doesn't turn from its intended prey.

Four of the Cold Ones continue to stumble after Edmund, trailing the wizard like kites on a string.

The Cold One [#6] that breathed on Mira now flails at her with its fists. It hits solidly with one but is totally off-balance for the second swing.

Stopping to catch his breath, Edmund turns around to see the four cold ones are still following him, albeit very slowly. Pleased at the distance he has covered, Edmund moves back through the trees to see them more clearly (to A-15).

When he hears Conner shouting, Edmund shouts back "I'm over here! Those four are chasing me!" However, Edmund doesn't seem to realise that the words "over here" are hardly the best directions, but then, maybe Conner can follow his voice.

Then, hoping for more wonder Edmund raises his rod over his head and thrusts it out towards the approaching creatures with a flourish. (Rod of Wonder = 72)

With an blast of explosive power, a Fireball bursts from the tip of wand towards the foremost Cold One (Target D-7, 18 damage, 20ft. spread, DC 15 Reflex save for half).

A third of the Cold Ones have been dispatched and nearly half of them are heading to the northwest. The party -- minus Edmund -- should be able to deal with the two that are left in the clearing. The wizard is otherwise occupied ...

Conner shouts directions to the others and moves to engage the Cold One still threatening the pony. His sword bites deep into the thing's back, making it turn away from Ashcan and Mouser.

Hoping to protect Mira, Arm lashes out twice at the Cold One. He hits both times but only his first strike is able to do any damage.

After the Cold One in front of him is dropped, Shadow will sheathe his rapier and remove a rope from his haversack.
DM Note -- Sheathe weapon and remove item from HHHaversack are both move equivalent, so that's it this turn.

Edmund, feeling safe that he is so much faster than the Cold Ones, comes back a bit and triggers his wonderful new rod once more. This time a burst of flame erupts and washes over the four Cold Ones. When his eyes recover, Edmund sees that only one of the four fey creatures is still standing and it looks very hurt.

Also seeing the effect of the fire, Thar directs his spiritual weapon to strike the one Cold One that remains. The glowing force strikes the Cold One down.

Kadaz charges across the clearing towards the one Cold One still threatening Mira. His axe bites deeply into the thing's back, but not deeply enough.

Mira moves away from the Cold One, allowing it to make a slow swing at her back. She was going to cast a spell at the group of four Cold Ones but none of them are standing.

Edmund (AC: 12, HP: 33/33), Mage Armour, Haste
Wednesday February 14th, 2007 11:43:19 PM

When the dust clears and the four cold ones are lying on the ground, Edmund can hardly restrain himself from jumping around like a maniac. He holds up his rod and looks at it admiringly for a few moments, shaking his head in disbelief. Then, he turns and heads back the way he came, amazed at how much ground he can travel without even hardly trying. (to G-7, 60ft)

As Edmund comes back around the corner, he sees a cold one up ahead, surrounded by Kadaz, Mira, and Arm. With a grin, Edmund raises his rod.

Just then, he pauses for a moment, one arm holding the rod straight up in the air over his head as he recalls what happened the last two times he used it. And, a closer look at that cold one shows it is about to fall anyway.

Slowly, Edmund lowers the rod and slips it back into the little loop on his belt. He can't contain a sigh as he does so.

Very soon though, Edmund realises that he has near-single-handedly taken out the majority of the cold ones with nothing but his rod, and as this dawns upon him, he smiles proudly, waving his hand over his head.

"I'm over here! I'm all right! Nothing I couldn't handle!"

Battle in the Clearing - Round 5 (DM JohnP)
Thursday February 15th, 2007 11:33:36 PM

Having dispatched most of the Cold Ones, Edmund dashes back towards the top of the clearing. He almost triggers his rod once more but thinks better of it before waving to his companions.

d8+5=9

Arm slashes the Cold One after moving around Mira to reach it. His sword bites into the thing's flesh but not deeply enough to drop it. Enough, though, that the first swing of Kadaz's axe is enough to fell the thing.

Close to the carter and pony, Shadow moves up to subdue the Cold One. But it's not to be as Conner destroys the thing with his sword and shield combination.

COMBAT ENDS

Mouser hops down from the back of the pony as Tyrus moves up to determine if his animal is injured. While the carter examines Ashcan, Mouser stalks over to the party.

"Well! Not difficult at all, really. Did you see how I fended all of them off? Only a matter of time, a matter of time, before I wore them out and did them in. Thank you for helping me dispatch those things."

Mouser stops to clean himself and preen a little bit, all the while glancing up to see if anyone is looking at him with admiration. When no one immediately fawns over him, the cat gets back to his feet.

"Let's give Tyrus a moment to get Ashcan settled, then we'll head back to see Gwenever. She will be relieved that we've stopped these things and kept Ashcan safe. It would be horrible if a guest like the pony came to harm while in her domain."

Mouser waits while the party and Tyrus prepare to depart.

Mira
Thursday February 15th, 2007 11:51:39 PM

"Is everyone all right?" Mira calls out from near the middle of the clearing. "Anyone hurt?" The woman isn't worried about her own hurts, they will mend with time.

"So you figure we shoulde go back?" Mira querries the talking cat. "You do not think we should continue? Get Tyrus, Ashcan, and the supplies to the orphans?" The sorcerer is now anxious to return to the real Wold, but doesn't want to insult the creatures of this fey place if she can avoid it.

Edmund

Edmund hurries over to the group and smiles at Mouser. "Glad to be of service, actually! It was... fun!"

Edmund stands ready to leave with the rest of the group.

Arm
Friday February 16th, 2007 5:45:39 AM

Figuring to humor the cat, Arm says to Mouser, "That was truly conduct of a champion, Master Mouser. For that, you should get a title more fitting of your position.".

As the party prepares to move out, he says softly to Mira, "I share your desire to be gone from this place, but I think it best that we go along with them for a bit longer. The last thing we want is to fall in Ginny's bad graces. How are your injuries, my dear? Is there anything I can do to help you?".

Kadaz
Friday February 16th, 2007 6:42:57 AM

Kadaz starts to try to clean some of the frost off his armor but quickly realizes that out here, in the cold, it is a hopless task. He listens to Master Mouser claim credit for the victory and glances sidewise at Edmund. Sounds like those two have more in common than a very long name.

Birdie looks over at Master Mouser and moves behind Kadaz. He believes the cat.

"Hope you're right." Conner grumbles at the cat. "I was worried that she might not like us 'dispatching' so many of her residents." Conner spends a few moments searching the remains of the various cold ones. "Never know if someone on the other side is still interested in their whereabouts" he explains. If Conner finds anything that might be used to identify an individual he will remove it.

"You were both wonderful and did a great job of defending Ashcan." Shadow says to both Mouser and Edmund, he hides his sarcasm well and realizes that they did much more than he did. He will search the bodies as he gathers up his bow and any arrows he can reuse.

Thar slowly catches his breath, glad that the battle is finally over. Now that things are finally quiet, he checks each companion over for injuries and begins casting spont CLW's on the following people. "Here, let me help get you patched up a little bit, if that's OK" he says to each one in turn. His hands glow slighly as the touches each wound and tries to stop whatever bleeding or bruising has occurred.

Back to Gwenever's Table (DM JohnP)
Saturday February 17th, 2007 10:11:07 PM

Mouser stalks around the fallen bodies of the Cold Ones as the party prepares to depart. He sniffs at the bodies, paying attention as the party searches the bodies. Nothing except frozen clothing and scraps of old, stale food are found on the bodies.

When Conner worries about how Gwenever would feel about their treatment of the Cold Ones, the cat stops and stares at the fighter.

"What? Why would she be worried? These are folk that turned from the hospitality of her table and went into the woods until their visage mirrored their cold hearts. And it's not as if they're really dead, is it? None of you used cold iron, did you? That's what would be needed to truly kill their kind here in this forest."

The cat looks over at where Tyrus is fussing over Ashcan. Then back at the party, before turning and walking back towards Gwenever's fire. Mouser speaks over his shoulder at the party.

"Step smartly! Let's get all of you back to the fire so the carter there can harness his fine pony to the cart. Then I'll lead you back to the road and you can take everything to these orphans."

The procession moves through the snow towards the central fire, Mouser leading the party who are followed by Tyrus and Ashcan the pony. It's not long before the firelight can be seen again through the trees. When the party gets close to the cart, Mouser races off towards Gwenever's white throne. Though the distance is great, the party can catch snatches of Mouser telling Gwenever how the Cold Ones were driven off with the party's assistance. Tyrus, of course, pays this no mind as he moves Ashcan between the shafts of the cart. Once he is ready, he asks Conner and Kadaz to help lift the shafts so that he can harness the pony to the cart. Mouser trots back to the party with what can only be a grin on his feline face.

"Gwenever was pleased with what we did, preserving her hospitality to this fine beast. Carter! Are you ready to travel?"

With that, Mouser leads the party back the way they came. At first, the trail is easy to follow since their footprints are still visible despite the swirling snow. As the party follows the cat up out of the glade, though, the trail becomes less distinct. Mouser slows, looking back to ensure that everyone is behind him. After climbing the rise to open ground, even Thar thinks that the trail leads in all directions. It's only when they focus on the cat leading the way does a definite path become visible.

Finally, the party looks up and realizes that they are standing on the road. As they get their bearings, the party sees the nearby road and surrounding fields in a pale, rosy light. There is no sign of where they crossed the fields into the fey glade. Thar takes a moment to get his bearings and realizes that the sun is about to rise over the eastern horizon.

Mouser looks about, then strides back to the cart. With the easy grace of a cat, he leaps up and scrambles onto the top of the cartload of Midwinter fare and gifts. Once on top, Mouser finds a low point in the canvas covering the load and kneads it with his feet. After circling two times, he lays down on the bed that he has made. Mouser lays his head down and moves his tail to cover his nose. A slightly muffled voice comes from the cat.

"I got you here, now I think that I will ride. Tell me about this orphanage where we're going. Do they have cats?"

Now that he has his bearings, Thar comments "Thanks for getting us here Mouser. Here is some more dried meat that you may enjoy (and Thar gives him a few pieces of his rations)"

Taking the lead, he figures out what direction they need to go and says with a grin "Well, I'm not the most articulate person but our resident bard or one of our two magic using types could surely tell you much more than I can about the orphanage and with much more elan. I'll take the lead spot in heading back to the orphanage."

Kadaz  d20+1=2
Sunday February 18th, 2007 2:48:22 PM

Kadaz walks back to Gwenever's grove, watching carefully for more of the Cold Ones. However, something, perhaps the cold, perhaps worry about not offending these Fey, keeps him from noticing much more than the clouds that form in front of his face whenever he exhales. (spot 2)

He decides that he is calling is as the strong, short, silent type. Kadaz quietly follows along behind the group, trying to keep warm.

Edmund
Sunday February 18th, 2007 8:14:38 PM

When Thar finishes speaking, Edmund looks up into the sky, considering how best to describe the orphanage.

After a short time passes, he clears his throat. "So you want to know about the orphanage?" he begins, "I can tell you everything you need to know about it."

As expectant eyes--or perhaps those are looks of dread?--are turned upon Edmund, he raises one hand carefully and pronounces the words with firmness and resonance.

"The orphange," Edmund declares, "is full of children."

Further information is not forthcoming.

Conner
Sunday February 18th, 2007 9:03:31 PM

The fighter assists Tyrus with harnassing the pony to the cart and follows mouser out of the glade. When the question of cats arises, he replies, "I'd think ther'd be several cats. The orphangae has a couple of barns and there's most likely mice and farm cats."

Mira
Monday February 19th, 2007 3:36:06 PM

The sorcerer giggles uncharacteristically once she recognizes the party is no longer in the fey kingdom. From relief or for some other reason isn't clear. "Wasn't that fun?!" she says to Edmund, hoping the wizard had the same enthusiasm for otherworldly spaces that she had.

On hearing the cat's enquiry, Mira approaches the cart, and walking alongside it, she tells what she knows of the orphanage and the personages at the manor.

Mira recounts the story told to her by her half-drow friend, Xenia, about the origins of the orphanage in Floating City, and how after suffering a massive amount of damage, the city was no longer a fit place for the children who survived the collapse of their former home. How, after ridding the place of vampires and undead, the manor was purified and restored to some semblance of normalcy befire the children were installed and Kay and Buckle were recruited to stay on a the manor as guardians for the children in the absence of the Crimson Shield's of Floating City.

Mira will then talk about how she agreed to check on the orphans from time to time, and write to Xenia to let her know how they were making out. How she and Arm had made the trip at least twice. Once, about a month after meeting the Shields, and again once during the harvest season.

Mira will say a little about how the place seems to get on quite well, though not without some hard work on the part of the inhabitants, and with little to spare afterwards. She concludes by saying the safe delivery of the cart full of goods will be appreciately very much.

While Mira laughs, Shadow lets out a quiet sigh of relief. He is very glad to be out of the unnatural 'Fey' glade. He will watch out for anything else unusual.
