Pressure

DM Kathy
Sunday January 28th, 2007 11:42:40 PM

Over the next few days you spend some time mapping the area, helping with defenses, and teaching the elves to better defend themselves. It's hard to say now whether your help will make a difference in a fight, but it does have the immediate effect of easing the tension in the elves. They are still alert for signs of danger, but don't seem as frightened as before.

On the third day after Lily's arrival, about two hours before dawn, those of you sleeping are jolted awake by a sudden cacophony. There is some kind of attack happening on the east side of the town. The scouts are sounding the alarm and firing their bows, although targets are difficult to see in the faint light. You hear screams, cries of alarm, and the sound of running feet.

Lorth
Monday January 29th, 2007 8:21:51 AM

Lorth grabs his sword and shield and then summons Tobiasz. As soon as possible he mounts up and rides to investigate the commotion.

Any  d20+10=19

Any quickly responds to the commotion and sounds of attack. He was not sleeping anyway, as he is fully rested. (ring of sustenance) He has been using the time that he had been using to sleep, to improve his fighting skills, to carve, to compose, and other such usefull diversions.

With sword and dagger in hand, he moves silently towards the commotion. As he approaches the area, he is careful not to present a target. In the dark, even elves might shoot a friend by accident in the midst of a battle. He sings a brief song, causing an arrow to glow, (light) and fires it into the ground near the sound of fighting, to get a better view of the combatants, then steps two quick steps to one side to view the scene.

Harvest  d20+14=20 d20+14=28
Monday January 29th, 2007 9:19:48 AM

Harvest Moon wakes and rubs a knuckle against a sleepy eye. "Anthos?" Some difference in his rhythms stirs her from her sleep.

Shouts of alarm and sounds of combat. Harvest rises in her bed clothes, pausing only to catch up her haversack and chain. Outside the tent she peers into the darkness, locating the commotion by sound rather than sight. From the haversack she requests a wand and spends another moment to provide herself with an invisible coat of armor.

Then she makes her way across the fledgling town toward the source of the uproar.

Navigating by memory through the darkness is slow. But Harvest Moon is swifter than most. Eyes open for shifting patterns of dark within dark, and ears keen for nearby sounds, she makes her way.

Arminas typically takes the predawn watch, so he is alert already. As he prefers, he sits high in a tree with Ewan close by.

Speaking a few words, Arminas then converses with Ewan.

Fly my friend quickly and find the enemy. Keep high, above the arrows. Come back fast.

Arminas then calls out to his owl friend who he has asked to keep watch. He repeats the same instructions in owl language.

He then drops out of the tree (feather fall ring) and gently settles to the ground. He moves quickly to the sound of battle.

Florin gets up quickly once he hears the racket and is glad he has been sleeping in his armor since hearing of the dragon and that a attack might happen over the room and such.

With this Florin quickly readies Glimmer and his shield and heads out to see what the problem is and help out.

Monday January 29th, 2007 11:52:10 PM

Hearing the sounds of battle, you all rise to answer the call.

Lorth calls his mount from the Celestial Realms and mounts up. Harvest and Davros magically arm themselves. Arminas spends a moment getting some animal assistance. Bralin, Florin, and Lily simply grab shields and weapons.

As you begin moving toward the sounds, Any fires a lighted arrow in the general direction. With its light--and the light of a few burning structures--you can now see what is attacking.

The first thing that catches your eye is the brown bear, because it is the largest of the attackers. It roars and takes a swipe at one of the civilian elves fleeing before it. The elf dodges the blow and puts on a fresh burst of speed.

Next to the brown bear is a smaller black bear. It is not attacking, but is waving its paws about in an unusual manner.

One the other side of the brown bear is a large, fierce looking gnoll brandishing a bloody greataxe.

Standing apart from the black bear is a human man with a spiked chain, and a nimble-looking half-elf woman with a rapier.

In the back, almost hidden by the bears' bulk, is a human woman with a longbow. She fires a shot and you hear a strangled cry and a thump from one of the sentry platforms.

As you approach, a dire wolf suddenly appears next to the black bear.

[You are still about 60 feet from the combatants, and unfortunately the footing is too uncertain for a charge. Most of the melee fighters aren't going to be able to close this round, although ranged attacks will certainly be feasible. I'll send out the map when the two groups get closer together.]

(If possible this round, not sure how close I am, or if we are in combat rounds)
Lorth switches to the lance that is strapped to Tobiasz's side while he rides towards the battle. When he sees the gnoll he charges without hesitation. "By Gargul's name you will kill no more today.", he yells.
(Spirited charge, ride by attack, smite evil, Hit AC: 28, Damage: 28 + smite damage. I am not sure if I should triple the smite damage or not, so either 34 or 46 total damage.)
Lorth rears Tobiasz up twenty five feet past the gnoll and turns for another charge.

Harvest AC27 HP 48/48
Tuesday January 30th, 2007 10:43:03 AM

Harvest draws a wand and provides herself with an invisible shield that should aide her against the bow wielding woman.

Given their speculation upon the cause of the last attack upon the new town, it is not difficult to see what might be the driving force behind this attack.

"I think that the Black Bear is a druid," warns Harvest Moon, her memory running back to Merryn Blackbridge who had briefly been with the group. "The large bear may be his companion."

Her eye runs over the array of opponents as Paladin Lorth thunders into the fray. Yes, it may be best to encircle them, and once encircled, it may be possible to silence them as well.

Trees, bushes and vines quickly come to life and wrap around the human man and elven woman with the rapier, the bears and whoever else is in the area of effect. (or whatever gets the most coverage of the enemy)

He then yells out in bear growls.

Elves are your friends. Quit your attack and you will not die.(hearing Harvest warning he adds) Shame upon those who sacrifice the life of an animal for their cause.

Entangle info

Wednesday January 31st, 2007 12:43:42 AM

Lorth's mount has enough speed that he can ride up to the gnoll, however the ground is too uneven to charge [see yesterday's DM post]. He is able to attack, though, and strikes a solid blow, made all the more lethal because the creature is, indeed, evil.

Any fires an arrow at the archer (who is human, not elf), and draws blood. The archer is clearly a combat veteran, though, and the wound does not seem to bother her much. Any gets to cover and draws out a potion.

Harvest uses another wand to shield herself, and warns the others that the smaller bear may be a druid.

Arminas uses a scroll to cast Entangle on the enemy. He calls out in Bear for the bear not to attack.

Florin advances on the enemy, activating his weapon as he goes.

Davros casts a Web spell, providing some opponents with cover.

Lily wants to shoot at the archer, but unfortunately there is too much Web in the way. She shoots instead at the brown bear, who promptly falls asleep!

The gnoll was too close to Lorth for the spellcasters to safely tangle up, so he is outside both the Web and the Entangle. He snarls at Lorth, seeming to go into some kind of fury. He swings his greataxe twice, and connects both times. Lorth takes 36 points damage.

The archer is inside the entangle, but not the web. She makes her Relfex save, so she is not entangled. She moves out of the entangle and looks about for targets. Lorth is right in front of her, so she fires a shot at him, hitting him for 7 points damage.

The human man with the spiked chain is inside both the Web and the Entangle. He is Entangled by both, and spends the first round trying to break out of the sticky strands of the Web. He is unsuccessful.

The half-elf woman is inside the Entangle, but not the Web. She manages to avoid being entangled, and immediatly begins trying to get out of the area of clingling, grasping plants.

The newly-summoned Dire Wolf is inside the Entangle, and just barely inside the Web. It makes its save for both, and immedately starts pulling its way out of the Web. Thanks to the Entangle, however, it can't get very far, and winds up half in and half out of the sticky strands.

The black bear is inside both the Web and the Entangle. He fails both saves and is pretty thoroughly stuck. Dimly, through the Web, you see his paws wave again--and suddenly, the Entangle vanishes!

Lily [AC 16, hp 25]
Wednesday January 31st, 2007 12:56:18 AM

"Well, that bear was easy. Hope the next one is just as easy."

Watching that gnoll lay its axe into Lorth helps Lily to make up her mind about her next move. She runs behind the tree to A4 (4 squares) then to G4 to use the next tree as cover (4 squares, cover provides +4 to AC). As she moves she returns her bow to the quiver, and draws the wand from it.
[double move action, draw/sheathe weapon is a free action as part of a move action. Two Weapon Fighting Feat also allows you to draw/sheathe two weapons in the time you could normally only draw one. A wand is counted as a weapon-like object, and is stored in the Effecient Quiver]

Any suddenly changes his actions, putting away his bow, and drawing his sword and dagger,

How could I have forgotten! That potion has been used! I guess we'll have to do this the hard way!

Seeing Lorth's condition, he instead moves to his support, going total defense untill he can reach Lorth's side (AC to 24), and then will be ready to attack this gnoll.

He screams as he is running,

"HAH gnoll! Your death approaches!"

Whether this is prophecy, or mere words will be known in a few minutes, but hopefully it will distract the gnoll from his attack.

Paladin Lorth!

Brave. He has drawn the wrath of the attackers from the elves to himself. But he is too far. Too far even for her swift feet. And even now, Anthos and others run to his aide. It would be best to ensure that they may do so without hindrance.

Dimly, through the Web of Davros Sapphiredge, the outline of the druid presents itself. It must not be allowed to bring more magic to this conflict. Harvest Moon calls to mind one of her precious scrolls, and it presents itself to her fingertips as she reaches into the pouch of her haversack.

The magic scroll crumbles to dust as the words are read, and Harvest points to a spot just visible through the sticky strands. Silence reigns within the Web of Davros Sapphiredge, and Harvest Moon takes a few steps to a nearby tree to survey the field of contest.

Lily moves up to support Lorth, dodging from tree to tree, sheathing her bow and pulling out her wand as she moves.

Lorth, realizing he's in a tough fight, dismisses his beloved mount and goes after the gnoll on his own. His sword bites deep, and the gnoll growls with rage.

Any moves toward Lorth, calling taunts as he goes in a frantic attempt to divert attention from the paladin. He goes fully defensive, which slows him somewhat.

Harvest retrieves a sroll and casts Silence, cleverly aiming at one of the strands of the Web, rather than the Druid himself, so there is no saving throw. That area of the battle is now eerily quiet.

Arminas shifts a little so he can see the gnoll, then launches 3 arrows in his direction. The first one hits, and the second hits spectacularly. The third, shot at an awkward angle around the tree, doesn't quite find the mark. [OOC note: when rolling critical damage, roll the die 3 times; don't roll once and multiply.]

Bralin strides forward and goes on the defensive.

Davros casts a Haste spell, putting it on Lily, Any, Florin, and Bralin. [You four are +1 to hit, +1 to AC, +1 to Reflex saves, and have an additonal 30 feet of movement (or double your movement, whichever is smaller). If you take a full attack action, you get an extra attack at your best attack bonus.]

Florin moves up to the archer, but cannot attack this round. [Your movement is 20 in your armor. Even hasted, you need a double move to reach the archer. Because you double-moved, you can't attack this round. Calling your mount is a full-round action; if you want to do it, you can't do anything else that round.]

The gnoll, badly damaged, rounds on Lorth with a howl of fury. His axe connects hard with the paladin, and does 11 points damage. He swings again, and the axe lands with a mighty thud--that clangs off of Lorth's shield. The blow misses.

The archer takes a 5-foot step back [putting her temporarily off the map until I make more map], and fires three shots at Florin. The first and third land with solid thunks. Florin takes 11 damage.

The brown bear is still asleep, snoring gently.

The black bear, unable to cast spells, begins struggling to get out of the Web. He is unsuccessful.

The human with the spiked chain must also get free of the Web before he does anything. He, too, struggles to get loose--and fails.

The Dire Wolf is not entangled, and with a final heave, manages to pull itself out of the last of the web. It moves, snarling, to Bralin's position, and takes a bite at the dwarf. It's a good, strong, bite, but he'll have to do better to hit Bralin's AC.

The nimle-looking half-elf woman also moves up to Bralin, and attempts to stab him with her rapier. It's a very poor attempt.

Bad guy status:

Brown Bear - asleep (light damage)
Black Bear (Druid) - Webbed and Silenced (undamaged)
Gnoll - very badly damaged
Human archer - light damage
Human with spiked chain - Webbed (undamaged)
Dire Wolf - undamaged
Half-elf - undamaged

Arminas has badly wounded the gnoll, his companions should be able to finish him off and heal Lorth. The druid is still stuck, Arminas looks around and can see that Bralin is about to become flanked by two attackers. Time to help the dwarf.

Arminas fires three of the flaming arrows at the half-elf attacking Bralin. His first arrow strikes the woman, and his second arrow again sinks deeply. The third arrow misses.

Thanks to the Haste spell, Lily is able to reach Lorth and tap him with the wand. Lorth is healed for 5. [I counted it out, and Lily can get there. The first diagonal only counts as 5 feet; after that it's a straight shot.]

Lorth realizes it's him or the gnoll, and decides he'd rather live through this encounter. He calls upon every bit of his heroism at his disposal and aims a mighty blow at the savage humanoid. The sword connects with a grisly schluuucht! and the gnoll falls. [OOC: I'm pretty sure you can only use one hero point per attempt. I'm quite sure you only needed one. Heck, your original roll would've hit him; he's a raging barbarian. :) Only mark off one hero point.]

Bralin lays into the Dire Wolf. The sturdy dwarven axe carves into the beasts flesh, and the wolf lets out a howl. He lets out a second howl as the axe strikes again. The third blow is turned, just barely, by the wolf's thick pelt. The creature looks badly injured, however.

Loyal Any throws caution to the winds and rushes to Lorth's side, only to find the the paladin's foe has already fallen.

Harvest rushes at the half-elf, wielding her spiked chain. In her nimble hands, the chain snags the woman's rapier and sends it thudding to the ground at her feet.

Arminas aims his bow at the half-elf, but hesitates when the woman is disarmed. Instead, he aims his arrows at the dire wolf. The first brings the creature down; the second all but rips it apart. The body disappears.

Davros, just to keep things interesting, casts Grease on the fallen rapier.

Florin advances on the archer, and swings his sword with deadly accuracy. His first blow hits; his second strikes a devastating blow. His third misses, but his opponent is clearly injured.

Finding herself without allies, the archer reverses course. She moves past Florin (provoking an attack of opportunity from him), and begins shaking and slapping the great bear. "Wake up, curse you!" she shouts. The bear can't hear her, of course, being inside the Silence, but the shaking seems to be having an effect. The beady brown eyes blink open.

The black bear is still entangled, and tries once again to break free. He succeeds, but will have to wait until next round to do anything else.

The human fighter is also entangled, and also tries to escape. He does not succeed.

With her melee weapon lying at her feet, the half-elf switches to her bow. She steps back and fires a shot at Harvest, whom she judges as easier to hit than the armored dwarf. It's an interesting theory, but it is proven false as the arrow bounces off of Harvest's magical armor.

Bad Guy status:

Brown Bear - lightly damaged (and awake now!)
Black Bear (Druid) - Silenced. In the Web, but no longer entangled. Undamaged.
Gnoll - unconscious or dead
Human archer - heavily damaged
Human with spiked chain - Webbed

Half-elf - undamaged; no melee weapon

Harvest Moon steps to Bralin Stoneminder's back and whips her chain again at the woman's weapon. This time, the action is less adroit. But the bow is an easier weapon to remove.

Lily taps Lorth again, and makes to follow him. However, Lorth doesn't go far, merely stepping in front of the bear. He raises his sheild and concentrates on defense.

Harvest steps up beside Bralin and swings the spiked chain again. She nimbly snatches the bow out of the half-elf's hand. [She's at -4, not you. :) ] Harvest calls for the woman to surrender, but Bralin is taking no chances. He steps foward and swings his axe. The unarmed half-elf cries out as her arm is all but severed by the blow. The axe swings again, and opens up another bloody wound. A third swing, and the half-elf crumples to the ground.

Arminas pulls out another scroll and casts another Entangle. It catches the bad guys, but also snags Bralin. Bralin, please make a reflex save for next round, DC 11.

Davros gest serious and casts a fireball.

The human archer takes the full brunt of the fireball. Cursing, she steps in front of the bear to unload on Florin. Only the first arrow hits, doing 7 points damage.

The brown bear manages to keep from being entangled, but he, too, takes the full brunt of the fireball. He roars with rage--or rather, he opens his mouth and you assume he's roaring. He makes no sound at all. It's a little eerie. The bear attacks Lorth. Its right claw swings, and rakes the paladin for 16 points damage. Its left claw swings, and opens up another wound for 9 points damage. Its mighty jaws snap--and miss.

The black bear likewise avoids being entangled, but doesn't avoid the fireball damage. Now free of the web's entangling effect, he begins trying to move out of it. He lurches 5 feet, then has to stop.

The human with the spiked chain is not entangled, but does take the full fireball damage. He tries to break free of the Web, and fails. Miserably.

The half elf falls. Bralin leans forward to touch her, but suddenly frowns. He twists, and dances forward, as if standing on hot coals. The reason for his odd movements manifests itself half a heartbeat later as the vegetation under the dwarf's feet comes alive, growing and thrashing about.

Bralin avoids the grasping plants [Reflex 18], and bends over the half-elf, placeing his palm on her leg while muttering a spell.

Lorth steps back and remains on the defensive. Lily heals him again, and tries to give him the wand, but he does not take it. [Lorth, I moved you to O2 instead of N2 so you wouldn't provoke an AoO]

Bralin manages to avoid being entangled. He casts a minor spell, and moves to touch the fallen half-elf, but the spell is not discharged. The charge remains on his hand as he maneuvers around the Entangle [movement is half-speed through the entangle, even if you make the save. I could only get you to M4.]

Any begins to sing as he unleashes a barrage on the human archer. She falls after his second blow.

Arminas steps out next to the tree to shoot at the druid. Only his second shot hits, but it makes a satisfying, fiery impact.

Davros moves forward a little and casts a Mirror Image to protect him from his foes.

Florin moves up to attack the druid, having to step into the Silence spell to do so. He slashes at the black bear with his sword, and finishes the job that Davro's fireball and Arminas's arrows started. The black bear falls.

The brown bear snarls at Any and Lily, but the plants wrap arounds its legs and it is entangled! It easily breaks free, however, and lunges forward to take up a position between Any and Florin, standing over the fallen archer. Now that it's out of the silence, its challenge roars across the battlefield.

The last of the web has burned away, and the human fighter manages to avoid the Entangle a second time. He can move! He makes a beeline for the edge of the Entangle, which puts him close to Harvest and Davros.

Bralin reverses course to go after the human with the spiked chain. His axe lands a telling blow. [OOC: a "cure" spell must be cast on a living or undead target. Alas, the half-elf is neither--therefore the spell didn't discharge. Bralin now knows that the half-elf is dead.]

She turns to gather back up her wand, and in doing so uses her Hat of Disguise to 'change' into fine clothes: dark blue silk dress with silver buttons and a light blue wool cloak with silver thread edging, and a tiara of silver. She draws a mighty (well, taller than herself) staff from her quiver.
Disguise 25

"We are all fine, yes? Lorth? Good. Excellent."

Lily turns to address the lone druid, with her chin raised high and her words clip't and clearly and slowly articulated, like that of those highly born speaking down upon some recalcitrant common merchant:

"You have not been informed correctly about whom you have attacked. That much is painfully clear. You have paid dearly for this mistake, and may very well live with that on your soul for many a year yet. You will be lonely without your companion, and thus shall have time a-plenty to ponder your folly. That is, with your co-operation you will live.

"Tell us, who was it that sent you to do this? and why. Be prompt, for I fear that there are some itchy bow-fingers not yet sated."

Lorth is glad this fight is over, he doesn't understand why this peaceful settlement keeps getting attacked and would also like some answers. It doesn't sit right with him and he hopes Lily's interogation comes to some fruition. He moves to retreive his lance, he will summon Tobiasz on the morrow and return it to him.

None are left standing but the man, and he is well in the care of Bralin Stoneminder and Davros Sapphiredge. The druid, though still, will not die of his wounds. But so many others are fallen.

"Paladin, Lorth," she rushes to the lone wounded member of their party, "please abide. It will be but a moment and I will bring the healing of our wands to you. First, I am sorry, but I must save those that I can."

She rushes off, but there are so many. Her first attempt to bandage the wounds of the bear are unsound, and the bleeding continues. (Heal 8 /Nat 1) She converts another cantrip instead and then moves to the Archeress. Finally, she comes to the Gnoll and again expends a cantrip on the creature, how fierce, even in a state of unconsciousness.

Then Harvest returns to Paladin Lorth. With four taps of the party's wand, she heals all of his wounds. (CMW x4 heal 52hp to Full)

Any

Any looks with remorse at the great bear. Of all those attacked, he regrets this the most.

"I'm sorry friend Arminas. Another moment and I might have been able to withold my attacks. Perhaps you could have calmed this great one. Hopefully Harvest's healing has preserved the life within."

He follows along behind Harvest, binding wounds on those that still live, and disarming them. He too wants to hear the reason behind this attack.

Bralin
Wednesday February 7th, 2007 10:41:05 AM

The black plated figure waits, his axe still at the ready.
"Arminas," Bralin's voice calls from inside his visored helm. "Will ye drop your spell?"

If/When the entanglement spell is cleared, the dwarf clangs behind the fighter. Stowing his axe, Bralin relieves his foe of his pack and any other weaponry he spies. The dwarf tosses the equipment to the side, creating a small pile of the fighter's possessions.

Once he's statisfied the man is weaponless, Bralin gives him a light push in the back, directing him toward the rest of the group.
"Move."

Upon Bralin's request, Arminas speaks a word and the plants stop grasping and twisting.

"Thank you plants, I hope you have not come to any harm."

He then turns to the brown bear and approaches it, checking to see if it yet lives. He turns toward the druid, and says:

"How could you sacrifice the life of a friend so easily?"

Looking up at the others he adds:

"I do not think the druid can hear us yet. Bind and gag him, we cannot afford to let him go free without a trial."

Seeing Harvest try and help the gnoll, causes Arminas to shake his head.

"It does not deserve life, do not waste your time. Unnatural creatures spawned in hate should not exist."

Afterwards he will go to help the elves that have been injured, leaving the enemy to his friends. Might be cruel but the enemy started the fight and their injuries were caused by their own dumb actions so where the elves were innocent and in his opinion more important at the moment.

Lily changes her guise and makes a rather theatrical speech at the druid. Unfortunately, he is still unconscious and can't really appreciate it.

Harvest attempts to stabilize the bear, but fails. The great beast continues to bleed. She casts a minor healing spell instead, and stabilizes the creature just in the nick of time. With Any's help, she spends a moment tending to the other foes. The gnoll is quite dead, but the archer still breathes.

Arminas dismisses his Entangle, and Bralin relieves the human fighter of his possessions.

Davros and Florin check into the nearby elves. The fires have been extinguished, except for one structure that seems to be a total loss. The elves are working to see that the fire is contained and that nearby trees and shrubs don't ignite. There are several wounded, being tended at a makeshift infirmary near one of the scout posts. There are also a few who are clearly beyond the reach of the healers.

Raider summary: The gnoll and the half-elf are dead; the druid and the archer are stable but unconscious; the brown bear was very near death but is now stable; the human figher is conscious.

Lorth
Thursday February 8th, 2007 7:31:40 AM

"I, certainly can wait.", Lorth says to Harvest.
He watches her as she makes the rounds trying to save who she can. When she comes to the gnoll, Lorth says, "If you save that one it will just try and kill you again when it regains consciousness. It is surely evil and lives for nothing but destruction." Lorth has no wish to fight it again and speaks his mind.

"Arminas, the bear yet lives as does his master. We must make sure that the one does not direct the other to attack again. The gnoll has been sent to Gargul, yet the female archer still lives as well."

Any makes sure that none will cause trouble for a while, binding their hands, and placing a gag over the mouth of the druid. He continues making sure that they are relieved of all weapons and magic.

Next, Any goes to assist with any party members, or elves, that may have been wounded. Only when this task is done, will he return to help deal with the questioning of their attackers.

Bralin
Thursday February 8th, 2007 10:38:08 AM

Bralin directs the fighter over to the druid, archer, and bear. His helmed head turns toward the large bear and regards it for a few moments.

"Will not the beast attack as soon as it wakes?" he asks. "Tis trained to protect its master."

Regardless of the answer, the dwarf pulls his axe, and keeps it ready. He waits patiently for someone else to begin the questioning while he assumes the task of guard.

Harvest
Thursday February 8th, 2007 10:48:48 AM

Harvest Moon considers the words of the Paladin Lorth as she eyes the corpse of the fierce Gnoll.

"Then that speaks to the character of these others, that they would travel with such a creature," she opines. "Paladin Lorth or Paladin Florin, can you determine whether those who have lived are Evil of character? If they are, then we must make decision as to their disposition quickly now."

She gazes off into the early morning darkness, looking back in the direction from which she assumes they must have come.

"Arminas Calaelen, do you think that you could follow their tracks back in the direction from which they came? To have struck at such an early hour, they must either have traveled all night, or they have a place nearby in which they rested until such a time that they could attack."

With those comments, she begins helping the others to care for the wounded, clean up the damage, and to arrange for those who have moved on to Gargul with the greatest respect that an be mustered in the dark of early morning.

Arminas
Thursday February 8th, 2007 10:56:30 AM

Bralin expresses to Arminas what is all too obvious.

"Yes, he loves the druid and will fight to protect him. I hope to reason with him."

Arminas takes a scroll from his pouch and readies it.

"This scroll will help calm the bear, though since we have fought it he may not succumb to it. I hope for his sake that it works."

When the bear starts to awake, Arminas will cast 'Calm Animals' spell from the scroll. He will then speak to it.

Your friend yet lives, we will heal him. Be patient, and do not attack. We too wish to be friends.

He will also pull out a scroll of 'Charm Animals' to use next.

Turning to Harvest he nods:

"Excuse me, the well being of the bear has taken my attention. Yes, following the trail should be easy. When we finish here let us do that."

Lily is pleased to hear that Arminas feels that he can follow the trail.

"I'd like to join you on that, Arminas, if you don't mind a companion that is. I can stay well hidden, and will serve as another pair of eyes for you." With that she lets the disguise spell drop, "I'll just get dressed normally before we go. Armour too this time."

However, Lily will not leave til she is comfortable that the bear is subdued. The other raiders seems to be taken care of.

Davros
Thursday February 8th, 2007 7:15:03 PM

Davros moves near to Bralin to assist with guard duty.

"I believe that our job is to protect the elves as best we are able. Whether or not the prisoners are evil, I think it should be up to the elves to decide what to do with them. They were certainly bold to attack an entire town. And if these are responsible for the previous bear attack, they were likely aware of our presence here."

Arminas - 2nd post
Thursday February 8th, 2007 8:33:16 PM

Arminas looks up as Davros speaks and points at the druid/bear:

"He is a druid, of course he knows we are here. He knows more about this area than we ever will. Remember also, that evidence from before pointed to the involvement of a druid. We have our man, or bear as it is."

Florin Jadenth
Thursday February 8th, 2007 10:09:15 PM

Florin looks to Harvest when she makes her request and he calls on his ability to detect evil in those they just fought and will point to the ones that show any taint of evil.

Florin then speaks up, "I'm going to see if I can aid the elves more, I have some training in healing and maybe it will help safe some. I will report back to you shortly to see what else is found out. Call if you need me."

With this Florin will head to where the bulk of the injured are and will offer his assistance to them.

DM Kathy
Friday February 9th, 2007 12:52:50 AM

Any makes the rounds and finds that his help is appreciated, if not precisely needed. The elves have their own healers, who know their craft, and the rest of his party seem determined to deal with the prisoners before their own hurts are treated.

Harvest, too, finds that her help is welcomed, but the elves have things well in hand.

Arminas offers to try to track the raiders back to wherever they came from. He also prepares to cast a spell when the brown bear awakens. Without magical healing, he will have a long wait--the bear was near death when Harvest stabilized it with the most minor of healing magicks.

[OOC the brown bear is at -8.]

Lily offers to accompany Arminas on the tracking mission. Darvos suggests that the elves should determine the ultimate fate of the raiders.

Florin looks at the raiders with his inner eye. The druid/bear and the spiked-chain human both register as evil; the archer and the brown bear do not. The gnoll and the half-elf, being dead, no longer have auras of any kind.

This being said, Any approaches their captives. Speaking first to the archer,

"Tell us who you are, and why you attacked this village."

He will pose this question to each of the survivors, taking care to warn the druid about attempting any spells when the gag is removed from his mouth. He will also ask Harvest to use the healing wand to just bring the great bear to wakefulness, so that Arminas may speak with it.

"You have a graceful way with Alemi's gifts." Harvest Moon smiles and compliments one of the elfish healers who works with skill upon the wounded.

"You are right, Davros Sapphiredge. We are tasked with the protection of the town, and as that is so, our first duty should be to discover why and from wence these attackers have come. Only then can we take greater measures to ensure that it does not happen again."

"But, as for the dispensation of these prisoners, I have been taught that it is the responsibility of all to work against Evil. Each person must take the responsibility upon themselves to ensure that Evil cannot have its way."

At this point, Harvest Moon's eyes drop to the ground. A dimple appears between her brows and her mouth forms into a small moue distress.

"And yet, I am, for myself ... distressed ... by the thought of taking their lives."

From then on, Harvest Moon remains silent, speaking only to follow Anthos' instructions as they question the attackers one by one. With spells available to her from the day before, she wakens the Bear, but only after the Evil Druid has been once again gagged and taken from sight.

Florin looks over the prisoners and declares the evil taint upon the druid. Arminas shakes his head, knowing that the paladin has a sure way of knowing but hating the fact that one can be judged so easily.

"I was hoping the druid was misguided in his desire to protect this land. Clearly I am wrong once again. Harvest you are right, let us wake this bear once the prisoners and dead have been removed. It would not be a good idea to remind him of battle upon waking him."

Once the area has been cleared and Harvest wakes the bear, Arminas cast 'Calm Animal' from his scroll.

He also recasts 'Speak with Animals' and says:
"Friend bear, we have healed your wounds. Vultures were coming but now you live. We are your friends. Where is your home?"

Lily and Lorth return to their camp and equip themselves for action.

Harvest uses her healing magicks to awaken the prisoners, and Any attempts to question them. They give their names, and say that they attacked the settlement because they were told to. None of them seems especially talkative.

Arminas casts Speak with Animals and begins questioning the bear.

"I live in the Great-Green-Wood," the bear replies. "Near Three Meadows and Winter-Sparkle Brook. But now I go with Friend where he goes. Friend goes many places."

The bear looks around, sniffs the air. "Where is Friend?" he asks. "He is nearby, I know. Where is Friend?"

Any

Leaving the prisoner in the hands of the elves, Ant listens while Arminas talks with the bear. Drawing him aside, Any says,

"I do not think that we will get any useful information from these people unless wwe can compel it from them. I believe our best hope will be to backtrack them to where they have come from, unless you have a better idea."

Turning to the rest of the party, Any asks,

"Should we prepare, and follow the tRacks of this group back to try to find who has sent them? If so, can the elves guard themselves while we are gone?"

Harvest
Monday February 12th, 2007 9:08:39 AM

Harvest Moon reaches out to touch the head of the bear. Its movements speak of distress. Its wounds are still great. A thing within her heart moves when Arminas Calaelen translates its words. In her mind is the knowledge that this is a wild, wounded and dangerous beast. And yet, in her heart other forces gentle, tender, and perhaps naive, whisper to the Brown Girl.

"Arminas Calaelen, can you not tell the bear that his friend is Evil? He would be happier were he to return to the woods. Perhaps there would be other bears with which he could live. We could heal his wounds ... "

But even as she speaks, her own voice rings hollow. Despite the yearnings of her heart, she knows what course of things is likely and what is not.

"Perhaps there would be some Charm that we might cast upon these attackers," she suggests. "Something that might compel them to accept what we might Suggest or to cause them to see us in a more favorable light. Maybe then ... maybe then the druid might be persuaded to release the bear back into the wild."

Bralin
Monday February 12th, 2007 10:54:50 AM

Bralin is eager to be off.

If not, we could let the prisoners alone in a room with Bralin for awhile. I'm sure they'll talk.Or, if someone wants to intimidate them, you could suggest that I will show them how to live out the remainder of their days as a frog..."

Lily
Monday February 12th, 2007 7:08:28 PM

Returning now with her armour,

"I have Diplomatic skills, but I do feel that it would be wasted on these ones. They've chosen to attack a village full of elves, guarded by adventurers. There is some motivation behind that which has driven them into this foolish predicament. Better that we track where they've come from and see for ourselves. They'll not speak of it, for they fear it more than death, it would seem."

"Let's go."

As you discuss things, you begin to feel that tracking the party back the way they came from will be the best course of action.

Still, Arminas and Harvest are reluctant to allow the brown bear to remain under the influence of the evil druid. Arminas attempts to influence the bear with a scroll.

The great beast blinks when the spell is cast, then shakes his shaggy head. "My head feels funny," he says. Then, "No! Friend did not bring me to die. Friend and I are companions. I go where Friend goes. Where is Friend? Why do you not let me see him?" [Made the Will save; sorry]

Harvest

"It is not speed alone, Harvest," Pasix had ever called her by the new name when he wished to make a serious point. "There is a power that lies within all people that can be brought into the force of a blow. It is the place from which your determination comes. It is a strength of will. Even a stubbornness."

"If you learn the use of this force, you take into your hands a grave and very serious responsibility. In its use you create two paths. One road leads to life and the other to death. Neither is necessarily good nor bad, and the choice can mean many things for many people. To choose Life can bring as onerous a responsibility as to choose Death."

At the time, Boo Moon, recently become Harvest, had done no more than look up at the man who had take she and her mother under his wing. He had said many things to her in the past that she had not understood with complete comprehension. And at that time too he had simply smiled as he had just as many times before.

Now the full weight of his wisdom bears down upon Harvest. When one saves a life, one becomes responsible for it.

Standing next to Anthos, Harvest Moon slips her small hand into his and holds it tightly.

"Is there a way," she asks, "to send the bear to sleep? Then, without pain, we may do what we must."

Any marvels at the actions of Arminas. He knew that this was probably the best course of action, but he did not think that Arminas would be the one to strike the blow. Perhaps his very reverence for nature allowed him to strike, in effect freeing the bear.

No matter, the deed is done. He turns to follow Arminas, and says,

Florin doesn't say this to hurt his friend but for the good of the group, the judgement on the evil druid will need to be made soon also.

You come to the sad realization that the bear must not be allowed to live as long as it is under the evil druid's influence. Grimly determined, Arminas does what is necessary. His first shot knocks the bear unconscious again; the second finishes him off.

Bralin moves over to watch the reaction of the druid. Now once again in human form, the man shudders and pales as he feels his companion's life force ebb away. "Growler!" His voice is a cry of anguish. Tears run down his face, and he drops his chin to his chest.

The humanoid prisoners can safely be left in the hands of the Tahlela and her scouts. Already, they are working to convert one of the newly-built structures into a jail. "We'll be fine," Tahlela says grimly. "Find the ones who sent them. That is how you can keep us safe."

The rest of the party seems prepared for the journey. It is still at least an hour until dawn, however. Will you wait for daylight, and if not, will you bring a light source or try to manage without one?

The dwarf has his "thinking" look on - a furrowed brow over an otherwise impassive face, as his gaze shifts from Arminas to Any to Harvest to Lorth to Lily.

A grunted "Aye", is his only response to the halfling. She can tell he's only half listening.

Harvest's mention of devotions break the dwarf's reverie.
"Aye," he grunts again - both an agreement and a recommendation.
The warrior cleric moves off, pulling out his fist sized obsidian sphere in the process.

Unless he's interrupted, Bralin is soon lost in the depths of The Orb.

Arminas
Wednesday February 14th, 2007 2:52:22 PM

Arminas has walked about 100 feet from the battle, along the path that the attackers took. He calls down Ewan, and sits upon a fallen tree stroking the eagle's feathers. Patiently he waits for the others to join him. While waiting, he sits in quiet contemplation thinking upon the spells he needs this day. Thoughts of the departed bear keep tugging at his mind.

He does not see the expressions on the faces of his companions, and only the newest members of the party would actually think he cares about their judgement.

You decide to wait for daylight before proceeding. The casters use the intervening time to variously pray, meditate, and study for new spells.

[Note that per the PHB, pages 178 and 180, any spells cast within the last 8 hours count against today's spells.]

Before your hour is quite up, the eastern sky has turned noticably pink, and the birds have struck up a riotous chorus in the treetops. As you prepare to set out, the yellow edge of the sun is just poking over the horizon. By its light, Arminas can easily see the tracks of the raiders, leading southward toward the Culverwood.

Any is prepared. He has been ready since the battle ended. His only debate has been whether to carry the extra weight of his cherished new lute. Finally, just as the allotted hour expires, he removes it from his back, and wrapping it carefully, he places it safely with Moonshadow's tack. He quickly checks on his friend, assuring him that they will ride again soon, and then returns to leave as the others gather in the early morning light.

Now is the time to get to the bottom of this. He says nothing, but offers his hand to Harvest as they prepare to move out.

His mind is elsewhere though as he contemplates how he can make right the death of the poor bear. Arminas's act has really troubled him, the slaying of a innocent that could not defend itself is an anathma to him. After a while he surrenders to the problem, there is nothing he really can do. Pehaps Arminas does not care about his friends judging him, but eventually Gargul will judge the fate of his soul.

Friday February 16th, 2007 1:11:12 AM

You set out with the dawn of what looks like another beautiful late-summer day. Arminas realizes he is following the back trail of the brown bear, the gnoll, the half-elf, and the two human fighters. The druid does not seem to have left tracks.

The tracks are easy to follow at first, but they become more difficult to make out as you get closer to the Culverwood. It looks as if some effort was made to hide the tracks. Arminas's skills are up to the challenge, but just barely.

You step under the eaves of the great wood, out of the warming morning and into the cool green dimness of the trees. You continue to follow the tracks through the forest, until at last you begin to approach a clearing. Arminas and Harvest are both able to spot tents in the clearing, and there is the faintest whiff of wood-smoke on the air. It would seem there is a camp of some sort up ahead.

"I think you took the correct course of action, Arminas Calaelen," Harvest Moon had replied as they made their way along the trail left by the attacking party. "It brings pain to my heart to see such a creature destroyed. Necessity is sometimes as cruel and terrible as any living monster. It took a special strength to do what was required. I admire you for your courage, Arminas Calaelen, especially in light of the connection you must feel to such an animal."

A flash of their earlier conversation rolls through Harvest Moon's mind as she crouches in the brush, peering about for the presence of sentries. Given the evil that Paladin Lorth had detected on the druid, it would stand to reason that their presence here would not be amiably met.

Best, perhaps, to take the measure of a danger before one is embroiled in its depths.

Harvest once again quietly takes out a wand and applies the invisible armor to herself. As a gift from the gods, she lengthens her stride. Then, with a scroll clutched in her hand, she creeps forward with the rest.

"I do not think that the attackers of this morning would have left a fire unattended," Harvest whispers over Anthos' spell. "There is likely a presence at this camp."

Davros, Lorth, and Florin ready themselves and wait for results.

Arminas returns his focus to the task at hand. The druid has hidden the tracks well, yet gnoll and bear tracks are difficult to mask. With caution, he watches for snares or pits with the help of his spell.

Occasionally he looks over his shoulder, to make sure the others keep close. Bralin he knows is near, as he clangs his way through the forest.

Florin keeps moving with the others, in his heavy armor he probably makes as much noise as his dwarves friend. Not sure what else to do as they move he comments to Bralin, "I'm thinking when I can afford it I might buy some mithril breastplate instead of this half plate I wear."

You continue following the faint trail. With heavily-armored warriors in your group, you cannot move quietly through the forest. Those of you attuned to the sounds of the natural world note that the birds stop singing as you noisily approach, and start up again some time after you pass.

Arminas is still able to follow the trail, although it is difficult. You follow the trail for another hour or so, and then, abruptly, it becomes obvious once again--at least, to those who know what to look for. Apparently, whoever hid the tracks didn't bother beyond this point.

Lorth

Lorth oblivious to the sounds of the forest, follows along, trying to take queues from the more woodsy types.

Arminas points to the ground in front of him.

"As you can see, the druid started hiding the tracks from here to the camp. Ahead the trail is easily seen. I do not know if we are coming upon another camp or not. If we do, it would be nice to approach unheard."

He looks at Bralin, Lorth and Florin.

"You seemed dressed to storm a castle, not sneak into a forest camp. Is it really necessary to be incased in iron?"

When everyone is ready, Arminas leads on.

The soft imprint in the soil. Yes, once noticed, it could very well be the impression of a booted foot. The branch of a low bush. Broken, yes. And once one knows to look at the core of the branch, one might note the freshness of the break.

All of these things come plain to Harvest Moon's eye, following in the wake of Arminas Calaelen. Once found, they come plain. And yet, to be able to read such things as readily as one follows the cobbles of a common road ... What an amazing thing that is.

There had been a time, when still devoted to Gargul, when Harvest had worked at the study of such tracks. To follow is not a thing required by those who Walk in Alemi's name. But the fascination at such skill is still there.

Such are the brown girl's thoughts as she moves through the forest with the others. Then the signs of passage become much more obvious. She looks up to meet Arminas Calaelen's eyes, certain that he has seen this as well.

"Either they are confident that they have not been followed beyond this point," she whispers, "or they wish whoever might follow to think so."

"Either way, we must continue."

Bralin clangs along at the back of the line, continuing to observe the backtrail. When Arminas calls a halt and points out the trail, he nods wordlessly.
the foe is near

Arminas asks his question about his armor. Tis a simple question, deserving of a simple answer.
"Yes."

The dwarf considers the situation further. Ah, the ranger wishes to approach by stealth. Yet, losing contact in this Wood may be fatal.

"Mayhap ye and Harvest can range ahead," he suggests. "Any may stay close enough to maintain sight with you, and the rest will fall back, maintaining sight with him."

Watching Arminas work, Davros can not help but ponder:

"We are blundering about like a bunch of novices. If there is any enemy present, they will not likely be surprised by us. Magic could give us much aid. A spell of silence for example would be perfect. Alas, no wizardly scholar has yet been able to reproduce that Gods' granted spell. Perhaps it is the Gods' way of ensuring that wizards are not sneaky to go along with destructive."

The eternal question of armor vs. stealth is briefly debated--as usual, without conclusion. The sneaky types think of armor as a clanking, noisy, waste of time, while the heavy fighters would no sooner go into danger without their armor than they would come down to dinner naked.

Tacitly agreeing to disagree, you continue to follow the trail. After about 20 minutes, you begin to see the signs of habitation--and not the kind that lives in harmony with nature. Trees have been cut, and paths hewn through the forest. Up ahead, there seems to be a clearing of some kind.

How is it that the Culverwood could allow such a thing within its midst?

"I think there may be something very wrong here, Anthos." Harvest Moon's voice comes as a whisper, partially from the present need for stealth, but partially from the enormity of the implications. Her eyes look about, as though attempting to look beyond the foliage. Her ears seek sounds beyond the passage of their own feet.

"Could there be something wrong with the Culverwood?"

Arminas stops in his tracks, a look of horror on his face. Again he is surprised by the actions of another. The druid was evil, yet to totally disregard the Culverwood in unbelievable.

He signals to Ewan, and points towards the clearing.
Look for danger.

Turning towards his companions, he motions that he is going to take a look ahead. Quietly, he moves off the cut trail through the natural forest. He moves slowly, staying as quiet as possible and blending in with the trees.

What has occurred here? How did this happen here in the Culverwood?

His weapons sem to have come to his hand without conscious thought on his part. Whispering to Harvest he says,

"My lady, I couldn't agree more. Something terrible must have happened for this to take place in these woods. Could the portection of the Greenmage have been suspended, or blocked in this area? Let Arminas look around. Hopefully we will find some answers soon."
