Back to the Orphanage (DM JohnP)
Monday February 19th, 2007 10:41:04 PM

The party is relieved to be back in the mortal world and out of whatever part of the fey realm that Ginny controls. Still, a little of that realm remains because Mouser keeps speaking to the party after politely accepting the gifts offered by Thar. Mouser actually wants to get a conversation going with Mira and Edmund since their opinions of the orphanage seem to vary so much.

"What is wrong with children? In my experience, they are very good at dropping scraps to the floor and sharing food with a poor starving cat. I would never, of course, allow them to dress my in doll clothes or similar indignity. Would you allow such a thing?"

Meanwhile, Kadaz and Conner keep an eye out. There is no traffic on the road and the pair think that a bit unusual, based on what they saw on their way out here. The country folk must have started before dawn to reach the City when they did.

Tyrus walks quietly beside his pony. When someone notices him, the man looks up and smiles. "It's nice to see the sun rise. Never did, there, back in the glade. Always evening, like, and cold. Some of the others, when they spoke, had been there for a long time. Some didn't know that Plateau City had been built. Still gives me shivers, being stuck there that long. Thanks, for getting me back here. I'm going to try to do better, so let's get these things to the little ones."

The road is frozen hard still so the pony makes good speed. The prospect of a warm stall and feed in the barn might be motivating it, too. It's not long before the gates to the orphanage are reached and Tyrus turns the cart into the lane. As they approach the house, the only sign of life are smoke coming from the chimneys. Finally, they see a figure that must be Buckle crossing the yard from house to barn. When he notices them, he shouts a greeting.

"Hallo! Midwinter's Blessing to You!"

That cry caused a pair of the older boys to come from the barn and some children from the kitchen. They are also shouting greetings. Before long, all the orphans will be out to greet the party. The pony picks up a bit of speed, getting closer to the house and the barn.

Mouser looks up from his perch atop the cart at the children. The cat looks over to Edmund and yawns. Just before the cart reaches the gathering crowd of children, Mouser asks a question.

"So, are these the horrible creatures that you were warning me about?"

Arm
Tuesday February 20th, 2007 5:50:12 AM

Arm smiles at Mouser and says, "I don't believe I have seen any cats at the orphanage, so I'm sure you'll be quite welcome. One word of caution...you'll have more attention than 100 cats I'm sure.".

Thar ail Baerer
Tuesday February 20th, 2007 11:25:11 AM

"Mouser, they're not too bad, just don't let them grab your tail" Thar adds with a grin.

He smiles as the children run towards the party and he begins wrestling and rolling on the ground with the kids, showing his joy at seeing them again.

Edmund
Tuesday February 20th, 2007 2:00:28 PM

At Mouser's question, Edmund nods stoically.

"Yes, yes they are. I'd watch my tail if I were you, lest you be swung about by it, or hung from a tree, or who-knows-what."

Edmund sighs, "All good things..." he says to himself. "Oh well, at least there's some tea inside--and you can have my cream," he adds, looking to Mouser.

Kadaz
Tuesday February 20th, 2007 5:07:06 PM

Kadaz watches as Birdie sprints ahead of the group to greet the children. The dog starts playing tag with a group, allowing him to get close but then pulling away at the last second, darting through a child's legs. He looks back at the cart, as if showing the cat how it's done.

Mira
Tuesday February 20th, 2007 10:41:48 PM

Mira smiles at Mouser, and holds out her arm stiffly, hand palm down. "You can climb up on my shoulder if you like, and survey the children from a better vantage point. They might get a little excited, what with cart full of presents" Mira suggests, while in her head she thinks not to mention a talking cat!

Conner
Tuesday February 20th, 2007 10:50:33 PM

Conner leaves the cart and with a few quick strides reaches Buckle. "Greetings to you friend". He grabs buckles forearm in the traditional military hand shake.

"Everything alright here?" he inquires.

Unloading the Cart (DM JohnP)
Tuesday February 20th, 2007 11:17:37 PM

The excited children awamr about the cart, shouting out greetings.

"Where were you?"

"Why'd you stay away?"

"Yay! Presents! And food!"

Tyrus has already loosened the canvas covering the cart's load, disturbing Mouser from his rest. A small halfling girl approaches Mira with a questioning look. She shyly whispers to the sorcerer, "Why are you talking to the cat that way? He's pretty, can I play with him?" Mouser stoically endures the child's grip on his fur, darting a glance at Edmund and seeming to stick out his tongue before the child picks him up with both arms. With all his thick fur, Mouser seems only slightly smaller than the child.

When Conner clasps Buckle's hand, the former guardsman smiles at the fighter. Buckle says happily, "It's Midwinter morning, you've been gone nearly two days. But you're here, and in time for Kay to do something with this. Let's get it all inside! You boys, start carrying everything inside! Girls, inside to help Kay put everything away."

There is a lot to carry - wrapped small packages, sacks of flour and beans, several smoked hams and other preserved meats and magically sealed containers of fruit from the far south. Not just the fixings of a Midwinter feast, but enough to see the orphanage through the winter in comfort. Everyone pitches in to help, even Birdie in a way since he keeps the younger ones out of the way by running in circles and letting them chase him. Mouser has disappeared with the halfling girl.

After a short while, the cart is empty and Tyrus takes his pony to the barn. Everyone heads into the house, hanging coats by the door and seeking the warmth of the fire. From the smells, Kay and the children helping in the kitchen have already started on the meal. Inside, the children crowd close to the party.

"Tell us what happened? Did you rescue Tyrus and the presents from a monster? Or three? Tell us all about it, please!"

Edmund
Wednesday February 21st, 2007 1:55:37 AM

Edmund does his best to stay out of the way. However, when everyone crowds around demanding a recounting of the battle, Edmund finds himself torn. This is, he knows, the very first time he's actually been decisively useful to the other adventurers. Yet at the same time, he has trouble taking credit for his actions. Maybe it is because of the way it was done--it was almost as if the rod did all the work, and Edmund was just the lucky boob who happened to be holding it.

Whilst Edmund is thinking about this he does nothing to satiate the children who are jumping about asking for details. Is the rod the real reason? No, perhaps not. Perhaps it is because he was actually useful. Normally, there is a need to be economical with the truth in order to maintain the illusion of being valuable to the group. But not this time. And strangely, he isn't pleased.

Here is the moment Edmund has been waiting for ever since he left his brother and his home. Finally, he seems to have accomplished something worth being proud of. But he cannot savour his victory, because for him this victory is an hollow one, one which he has not earned.

Edmund rises suddenly and shakes his head. "No, do not ask me. Mouser saw it all--and he is clearly better fit to tell it. Besides which, it is not every day you children see a talking cat, eh? Better make the most of it whilst you can. I am certain he will be happy to tell you of how he bested our foes. For my part, I think I need some fresh air."

Excusing himself, Edmund steps outside to get away from the press of children, adventurers, and animals. Once outside, he takes his rod out and looks it over before returning it to its belt loop with a sigh. "Oh well," he thinks to himself, "Oh well."

Arm
Wednesday February 21st, 2007 5:47:48 AM

Deciding on a tactful approach, Arm downplays their battle with the Cold Ones to the children, "We had a bit of trouble, but not from Ginny, mind you...she was quite nice to us.".

Kadaz
Wednesday February 21st, 2007 6:34:19 AM

Inside the house, beside the fire, Kadaz looks quizzically at Edmund. This reticence is so unlike him. He steps back from the noise and follows Edmund outside. Kadaz stands quietly beside him for a while, looking out over the snow draped landscape.

"What's the matter Ed?" Kadaz finally asks. "You did very well out there in the cold."

Shadow
Wednesday February 21st, 2007 10:14:55 AM

Shadow helps get everything into the house, and does not say anything about what happened. He looks at Edmund when he has his outburst but says and does nothing. He will sit quietly and reflect what really did happen as his companions relate what happened with Ginny.

Edmund (2nd, illegal post)
Wednesday February 21st, 2007 6:35:25 PM

When Kadaz shows up, Edmund remains silent for a few moments. It is only when Kadaz compliments his performance that Edmund speaks.

"Did I?" he asks with a hint of bitterness. "Did I? No, I will tell you, I did not. Nothing to do with me, old man. Just my latest toy. When those creatures showed up in front of me like that, I thought I might very well be for it at last. I turned and ran--that is what I did. If anyone is responsible for 'my' victory, it is the person who made my rod."

Edmund stares at the snow, frowning. "I actually started to think--no, nothing more to say about it, really. That's that."

He shrugs, and then shakes his head.

"I'm fine. Let's go inside and have some tea."

Conner
Wednesday February 21st, 2007 8:01:09 PM

"Well...Tyrus here lost his way and found himself in a cold, cold place, and couldn't find his way out. The Frost Ginny found him and invited him and the pony to her fire for warmth and food, but only the pony could find his way there. Wasn't till we found Tyrus and called out for him, and showed him how to get out from the cold and dark that he found the fire. Problem was a bunch of frost monsters found ol' Ashcan out there and were goin' to make a meal of him. Tyrus and the rest of us rescued him, and defeated the frost monsters. And now we're here and ol'Ashcan has a belly full of oats and a carrot, and Tyrus is finally gettin' warmed up. I don' reckon you'll lose yer way again, will ya?" Conner gives Tyrus a knowing look with his final statement.

Thar ail Baerer
Wednesday February 21st, 2007 8:11:05 PM

Thar listens to the children's innumerable questions and nods at appropriate places when Conner tells the story.

He becomes a little concerned about Ed's frustration and quick exit from the room, but it looks like Kadaz has the matter in hand.

Realizing that he is no story teller, Thar tries to find something else to keep him busy. "I'll be right back everyone and will be checking up on the kids health," he comments to his companions. As the children are entertained by the parties adventure stories, Thar goes to Kay and explains to her that he'd like to attend to any medical conditions that need help and if there aren't any, he'll just do checkups and physicals on the kids.

In the Front Room (DM JohnP)
Wednesday February 21st, 2007 11:09:20 PM

The children are crowding around to here the story of rescuing Tyrus and Ashcan. When Edmund suggests that Mouser tell the story, the children are quiet and stare at the wizard. Then, one child titters nervously and then everyone lets out a chuckle. Without really meaning to, Edmund had amused the children. One little girl, the one playing "swat the shoestring" with Mouser, speaks up.

"Silly! Cats can't talk!," she exclaims. And when the party looks, Mouser is doing an extremely good impression of an ordinary housecat.

Edmund was already heading outside, followed by Kadaz, so he didn't hear much of that remark. It's for Conner and the others to tell the story of what happened. Tyrus isn't there to say anything, although an older man's laugh is heard from the kitchen.

Thar heads out to the kitchen to speak with Kay, seeing the carter sitting in a chair in a corner by the stove, telling stories to the children helping to prepare the meal. When Thar asks about healing, Kay shrugs while in the middle of preparing some kind of stuffing.

"Sure, if you can catch them. Being out here in the country, most of the usual things have passed by. Some might have splinters, or the like, but nothing serious."

If Thar suggests the idea of medical examinations to the children, they suddenly find various chores or lessons to occupy them. Except for the halfling girl that has, more or less, adopted Mouser. She lugs the big cat over to Thar and tells the cleric that, "His purr is funny. Is he okay?". Then she struggles to lift up the cat for Thar to examine. He isn't sure, but Mouser might be smirking.

After Thar scares the children away, some hours pass in chores and lessons. The party might find different things to do, but staying out of the kitchen while Kay works is the best idea. Finally, after hours of delicious odours from the kitchen, Kay calls everyone to dinner.

When the party comes back to the dining room, they find places set for all of them and Tyrus. The children assemble, then Buckle stands for a moment before nodding to the adventurers.

"It's been quite a year, for all of us. The Coming of the Fey King and the near destruction of the Float, then coming here. This place, and the children, have been both work and a pleasure. And, now, this last moment deliver of a Midwinter Feast."

"But the greatest thing that I have to be thankful for, is meeting Kay. She is, by far, the best person that I have ever met. We were thrown together, but ... we've prospered. And grown together. And we'll soon enough be adding to the work around here."

Kay smiles and blushes when Buckle says these things. She does, however, reach out to take his hand while rubbing her stomach with the other.

"I'm sure that all of us have something to be thankful for. But, before we eat, can you please say a blessing?"

Buckle directs that request to Thar, since he is the obvious choice.

Kadaz
Thursday February 22nd, 2007 12:49:59 AM

Kadaz tries to reason with Edmund. "We all have our tools. I'm strong, but with this axe" Kadaz waves his magic adamantine axe that he is never without and even sleeps with, "I am a much better fighter. But in battle this axe doesn't have a will of its own - I am in charge. I think that rod of yours makes you a more effective mage. But put that thing on the ground and you're still a mage while that is just a piece of wood."

Kadaz pauses to consider what happened out there. "And as for your running away, I think you did the exactly the right thing. It's my job to stand in front of those who attack us and fight. It's your job to stay back at a distance and use your magic. It's actually a failure of mine if I let creatures get close enough to hit you. Likewise, it's your job to keep enemy magic users from attacking me from a distance."

"To each his own. My talent is with this axe, yours is waving your fingers and making magic. So let's make a deal, I won't feel bad about not casting spells if you don't fee bad about avoiding combat. I think that together we, and our friends, make an effective group, don't you?"

Kadaz waits to see if his words have any affect on Edmund. He stands on the porch, watching the mage out of the corner of his eye.

Arm
Thursday February 22nd, 2007 5:48:14 AM

Arm is silent for the moment...reflecting back on everything that has happened this past year, both good and bad. Seeking out Mira's hand, he squeezes it gently and whispers to her, "I am thankful for YOU this year, my dear.".

Shadow
Thursday February 22nd, 2007 9:35:21 AM

Shadow relaxes during the day while the kids do chores/lessons and Kay cooks. He is not sure what is expected of the group, but he is content to not really have any thing to do at the moment. He considers their past encounters and thinks about how he might contribute to the group more. He thinks out loud, "I need to find some more effective arrows."

When dinner is called, Shadow will head into the dining area. He is almost on the verge of tears as Buckle comments about the past year and his love for Kay. He is happy that the orphans have such caring people to watch over them. He determines that in the morning he will make some permanent marks of the Guild on the buildings, so all rogues will know that this is a protected site.

Thar ail Baerer
Thursday February 22nd, 2007 10:30:27 AM

In response to the girl's question about Mouser, Thar will pretend to examine him and says "Well, he looks healthy to me. He'd make a great friend for you so enjoy your time with him!"

Seeing that Kay and Buckle will soon be adding a member to the family, Thar subtly looks at their ring fingers to see if they have been combined in matrimony yet. If not, he'll subtly offer to preside at a wedding ceremony between the two, if that is something that they would desire. He comments that they make an excellent couple and it would be good for the kids to see two people in love become man and wife.

At the dinnner, Thar says grace and gives thanks for their safety and rescue of Tyrus, as well as the kids health and the coming birth of Kay's baby.

Edmund
Thursday February 22nd, 2007 3:33:21 PM

Edmund nods in reply to Kadaz's words.

"I suppose so," he says, "But really, anyone could operate this rod. As for your axe, I doubt I could even lift it! But you are probably right. After all, he who turns and runs away lives to fight another day."

Edmund smiles a little, at last. "Let's go inside," he says. "Whatever they've made, it smells excellent. I'd like to get some before it is all gone!"

Kadaz (2nd post)
Thursday February 22nd, 2007 4:45:17 PM

Kadaz looks at Edmund closely. "You say anyone can use that rod. Show me how!" May he could strap a rod like this to his axe!

Conner
Thursday February 22nd, 2007 5:36:24 PM

Conner sits quietly through Thar's grace, respectful of the religious leanings of Thar and some of the others in thr group.

Gods have meant little to the tattooed fighter. The wine grapes his family had tended grew at the mercy of the soil, the weather, and the occassional outbreaks of insects and molds. His own families sweat was the other key ingredient, and it seemed to him that a man's future was mostly his own to determine.

Gods just seemed to get men excited and their petty jealousies had been the start of more than a few wars. True there was evil in the Wold, but it seemed to feed on the greed of men, and in the end, men had overcome. The battle in the tomb of Atmahlanto had showed him that...

Edmund (2nd, illegal post)  d100=73 6d6(4+5+2+5+4+1)=21
Thursday February 22nd, 2007 9:20:40 PM

Edmund hesitates for a moment, looking back at the Orphanage, and then nods. "Right, then," he says decisively. "I'll show you."

He pulls the sceptrelike metal rod out of its loop on his belt and shows it to Kadaz. "Twelve thousand gold for this, and you get what you pay for. Lightning bolts and fireballs! Marvelous thing. Let's see... ah..."

Edmund looks around and then points to a pile of stones a short way off, just outside of the orphanage grounds. "There, watch this."

With a smooth movement, Edmund pulls the wand back and thrusts it forward, rather like one would strike a foe with a mace, or the flicking of a magic wand.

With a FWOOMP, a Fireball blasts out towards the rocks where it detonates ((presumably)) with a marvelous BOOM ((for 21 damage vs. the pile of rocks)).

Edmund, for his part, nearly falls over. After he recovers from the initial shock, he grins a bit at Kadaz.

"I'm not sure how it works, really, or why it is lightning sometimes and fireballs at others, but I won't complain. It's a heck of a lot better than a light crossbow though, don't you think?"

Mira  d20+3=22
Thursday February 22nd, 2007 10:58:49 PM

Mira is quiet and subdued, reluctant to return entirely to the mundane affairs of the regular Wold. Despite the cold of the place, the Fey Wold and Frost Ginny had unexpectedly thrilled the sorcerer.

When folks spread out before dinner, Mira put on her heavy cloak and returned out of doors to ponder the possibility that there might be other pockets of mystery and magic in the Wold. From a distance she is witness to the growing friendship between the skinny wizard, and the stout dwarf. She keeps her presence a secret (Hide=22), happy in the knowledge that Edmund was finding his place in the group.

*****

Mira bows her head at Arm's generous compliment. She returns a gentle pressure on his hand, but then looses her hand from his when it is time to eat. The delicious smells overwhelm her, and Mira realizes she is really quite hungry. They never did get to partake of Frost Ginny's banquet, and Buckle said they had been gone for two whole days...

Food! Presents! (DM JohnP)
Thursday February 22nd, 2007 11:15:48 PM

After Thar's blessing of the meal, the children dig in hurriedly. kadaz and Edmund are just in time when they return from outside.

Bowls are passed around the table and the older ones help the younger. From the looks of things, Kay has outdone herself - fresh-baked bread, churned butter, at least two potato dishes, baked squash, preserved vegetables, a very tasty ham and a goose. Over on the sideboard, two kinds of pie are waiting for desert.

After the initial rush, things quiet as the children pay more attention to eating that talking. Kay and Buckle smile when Thar offers to bless their union and then explain that Belkior already did so.

All of the party enjoy the meal, basking in the thanks from the children. Tyrus is sitting down at one end of the table, on his best behaviour with the children around. Shadow catches a glimpse of Mouser under the table, quietly threading his way through as he cleans up scraps of meat and other tidbits that "fall" down to him.

After Kay has served the pies, and everyone is finished their meals, the children gather the cutlery, dishes and food and carry it into the kitchen. Buckle nods to Tyrus and the carter slips outside, returning in a moment with a large, bulging sack that he carries into the other front room near the fire. Buckle waves the party to the room, offering mugs of hot cider for those who want something to drink. The former guard pulls two chairs over and than waits for Kay to return. After letting her sit, Buckle reaches inside the sack to remove a wrapped gift. When the children come back into the room, he calls the little halfling girl forward. She shyly goes to Buckle and takes the gift, then quickly removes the wrapping to reveal a small doll that clearly is a halfling woman dressed in chain mail. She runs back to where Mouser sits and starts playing with her present.

Buckle continues, pulling out gifts that have been sent from Floating City to each of the children. Clearly, the Shields have put some thought into the presents because all of them are appreciated. Then, at the end, Mouser runs from where he has been alternately been the monster being slain by the halfling warrioress and the doll's mount. The cat skitters through the wrapping paper and nearly collides with Buckle, twisting as he slips on the sack before shooting through the door. His heavy feet can be heard running up the stairs to some safe refuge. Buckle looks down holds up a grey silk bag. A note is attached and he turns the paper to read it.

"I didn't see this before. Must have been down in the bottom corner. It's for all of you, from the envelope."

When Buckle holds the silk bag forward, it seems to shift and shimmer in the light of the candles and fire. Whoever is closest takes the bag and looks at the note, which is actually a small envelope. Clearly written on it in an archaic script are the words:

Mithril Guard

Which is a bit odd because that name hadn't been settled on until they were on the road out here. It's mystery as to how anyone knew that they would be taking that name. Clearly, the bag and envelope are intended for them, but who sent it?

DM Note (JohnP)
Thursday February 22nd, 2007 11:18:14 PM

I intended to do more, but ran out of time and had problems staying logged into the site. And I posted while Carla was doing so. Someone needs to take the bag and open the envelope. Or post about how much your character ate.

Depending on tomorrow morning's schedule at work, I'll either add a post or wait to tomorrow night.

Thursday February 22nd, 2007 11:44:46 PM

"Here, let me have a look at that!" calls Mira, adding, "Edmund, come help me with this." The sorcerer waves the shimmering sac, indicating the wizard should take it for the moment.

Mira will open the envelope addressed to the group, and after examining the contents, she will share the information with the party. The sorcerer will then turn her attention to the sac. (Knowledge Arcana=21, Spellcraft=27, Aid Another to help Edmund figure out what the bag is all about.)

Edmund hurries over when called, and takes the bag, peering at the envelope as Mira opens it.

"Well! Mithril Order, shouldn't it say? Are you sure it is for us? And who could have sent it?"

Edmund directs his attention to the bag and does his best to figure out why it is shimmering, and what might be inside it. (Knowledge Arcana=27, Spellcraft=25)

Arm
Friday February 23rd, 2007 5:55:32 AM

Arm sits back, sips some hot cider, and feigns disinterest while the children open their presents. In reality he is quite saddened by the scene...during his childhood he received NO presents, and had no one to watch over him. He muses that may be the reason why he is so cynical now...he never had a chance to BE a child.

When the pouch is produced, it gladly draws his attention. His hand unconsciously drops to the hilt of his sword should he have need of it, all the while keeping a close eye on the mysterious package.

Kadaz
Friday February 23rd, 2007 6:31:07 AM

Kadaz eats his share of the meal and even manages to find a bit for Birdie. For his part, Birdie lies next to Kadaz, pretending to be asleep but really keeping an eye on that cat. He hasn't made up his mind yet but he dreams of chasing it up a tree.

Once the note is found Kadaz is sure immediately what is going on. His eyes search out the room for Master Mouser. "More Fey business, I'm sure" he says to himself.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the meal (a true feast), "Kay, this is wonderful and thank you and Buckle for sharing this with us." He is confused a little bit by the seeming change from the little gray cat, but who is he to say what those of the fey really do.

He will watch the kids faces light up as each receives a gift and he can tell that they truly do appreciate them. He enjoys the warm cider as they all relax.

When Buckle finds the mysterious grey bag, Shadow suddenly becomes wary. He hopes it is from Ginny, but is a little suspicious considering all things lately. He will keep an eye out for anything that could happen.

Friday February 23rd, 2007 10:44:19 AM

Smiling as he hears that Belkior beat him to blessing the union, Thar says "That's good to hear and I'm glad you two are blessing each other's lives."

He also enjoys seeing the kids play and enjoy each other's presents. Celebrations like this are what make life's problems seem so much smaller.

When the group discovers the bag, he frowns and moves closer to Arm, knowing that if something bad occurs, he'll at least his back covered. "I don't like surprises like this Arm, especially when they interrupt a gala like this," he whispers to his companion.

Conner
Friday February 23rd, 2007 4:02:28 PM

"It's just a bag!" Conner responds to his friends aprehension. "What harm can come from such a small and harmless thing?"

With that, Conner will reach for the bag and peer inside.

The Bag (DM JohnP)
Friday February 23rd, 2007 10:18:51 PM

Mira reaches out for the bag and envelope. After examining the writing on the envelope, the sorcerer pries open the envelope and finds a tightly folded sheet of fine paper inside. After looking over the paper, even holding it out for Arm and Shadow to examine it, she pries it open and scans what is written upon it. Then Mira reads it aloud to the others.

To the Mithril Order,

As I stated, a great deal of time has passed since anyone sought out my Court. And your reasons for doing so were noble, without concern for yourselves.

In addition, without promise of compensation, you acted to preserve my hospitality and saved an innocent animal. Considering how I view such things, even inadvertently failing to protect one under my protection would have been a serious fault.

In thanks, each of you may take what you find in the bag. The bag's magic works for Midwinter Day only, so do not hesitate. Please use this gift as many times as you wish, but I ask you to neither slight my gratitude nor abuse it.

Gwenever

While she was reading the note, Edmund had been fingering the bag. Despite his examination of the bag's exterior, he cannot recall hearing of anything like it. There are several magic items that utilize space-twisting magics to hold far more than they should but he senses that this is not what this item is.

The others are generally cautious of the bag, wondering whether they should trust something provided by a powerful fey. Arm unconciously moves to grip his sword and Thar moves closer, seeking support in the event of an attack. Shadow and Kadaz look around for threats, catching a glimpse of Mouser looking on from the hallway.

But it's obvious from the note that Frost Ginny expects them to use it. Conner takes a more direct approach, grabbing the bag away from Edmund's fingers and opening it. When he looks inside, he experiences a momentary vertigo before his vision settles. The bag is dark inside but he is certain that, for a moment, he saw an glittering pile of weapons, armor, gems and other treasure inside. If he reached inside, he might be able to retrieve one of those things ...

During all of this, the children are hushed and expectant. They've heard Mira read the contents of the note and realize that this might be something that they can talk about for a long time.

OOC - Indicate how many times your character will reach into the bag, and roll d100 for each attempt to determine what you retrieve.

Kadaz is willing to try first. "I am willing to reach in and see what is in there for me. But I think that one of the lessons Ginny teaches is not to be greedy. So I will take only the first item I come across. And I will thank her whenever I use it."

Kadaz takes the bag, whispers a quick prayer, and reaches in and grabs. (85)

He then looks at Master Mouser closely. "I have one addition. As Master Mouser has clearly shown us, it's not only dwarves, elves, and humans that are member of the Order. I will pick again, this time for Birdie. I hope he gets something useful. (rolled another 85!)

Edmund looks at the bag suspiciously, possibly because of his inability to discern exactly how it works. Still, the prospect of Free Presents! is enough to overcome any doubts he may have.

He nods to Kadaz and takes his own turn with the bag. "Once for myself and once for luck!" he says, and reaches in twice, once with each hand, his eyes closed until both lucky dips have been completed.

Edmund opens his eyes slowly to see what he has drawn out...

Kadaz leans over and plunges his hand into the bag, groping around for whatever might be inside. He grasps a small, warm stone that seems to fit his hand and then draws it out. As his hand emerges from the bag, the stone seems to grow in his hand and become pointed. When the dwarf opens his fist, he sees that he is gripping a clear, colorless six-sided crystal and he senses something of what it can do.
Highlight to display spoiler: {Grip crystal and to drop temperature within close range by 10 degrees, usable once per week.}

The dwarf then reaches in and grabs another stone for Birdie. He has the same sensation, then feels the stone grow and lengthen into a thin collar that will fit around Birdie's neck beside a collar. Again, Kadaz senses what the item does as soon as he looks at it.
Highlight to display spoiler: {Causes the wearer to have sweetly scented breath at all times, continual use while worn. Does not occupy neck slot.}

Edmund then comes over to reach into the bag with each hand. He experiences the same as Kadaz -- a warm stone that fits to his hand, then transforms after he removes his hand from the bag. The stone in his first hand becomes odd-shaped with indentations and, like Kadaz, the wizard senses what the item will do. The second stone splits within his hand and becomes three small vials.
Highlight to display spoiler: {First stone - a rat's skull. If crushed, it provides +1 to all combat and skill rolls vs. rodents, lasting for one scene.
The second stone has transformed into 3 flasks of Frostfire. Treat each vial as Alchemist's Fire, except that it causes cold damage, and cannot be extinguished.
}

Thar reaches into the bag only once, removing a stone that grows dramatically in his hand until he is clutching a bundle of 50 finely made masterwork arrows.

Conner plunges both fists into the bag, gripping a stone with each hand. The first stone stretches and twists until he removes a circlet that can be worn on the head. The second stone transforms into a vial.
Highlight to display spoiler: {First stone - Circlet of Persuasion
Second stone - vial of Silversheen
}

Mira reaches into the bag three times, although she nearly re-considers after the first stone suddenly turns into a full set of plate armor, big enough to fit any of her companions. Her next two stones turn into small items -- a small silver whistle and a black gem.
Highlight to display spoiler: {First stone - Medium full plate
Second stone -- a small silver Cat Whistle. When blown, produces a metallic whirring sound that calls any one feline of the animal type within 100 feet. It simply makes the feline come to the blower, not alter attitude or even make the cat move any faster than it desires. Usable 1/week.
Third stone -- This black stone keeps the wielder's feet warm while squeezed and make their footsteps glow warmly. The heat is sufficient to melt snow, but not ice or other materials.
}

Arm dares to reach into the sack three times, thinking that Ginny truly means to reward them. His faith is returned when the first stone grows cold in his hand even as it twists and stretches. When he removes his hand from the sack, he is holding a gleaming white light crossbow. The second stone also stretches in his hand until he withdraws a well-made shortspear. The final stone turns into a white, three-lobed stone.
Highlight to display spoiler: {First stone - +2 Icy Burst Light Crossbow
Second stone -- masterwork shortspear
Third stone -- This white stone can summon a medium-sized snowman 1/week. If melted, a snowman provides one day supply of water for the group.
}

Shadow reaches into the bag twice, retrieving stones that turn into items both times. The first is a telescoping tube fitted with glass lenses that others recognize as a spyglass. The second stone turns into a heavy mace.
Highlight to display spoiler: {First stone -- Spyglass
Second stone - +1 heavy mace
}

A chorus of "ooh's" and "aah's" follow each time someone draws something from the bag. When it is all done, all the children wait expectantly to see if anyone draws more items.

Arm
Tuesday February 27th, 2007 5:50:01 AM

Arm is pleased with his gifts, although the short spear he does not particularly need. He would like to ask his companions if any of them could use it, but then remembers his oath before choosing and approaches Buckle, saying "I don't think I should have much use for this. I am presenting this to you should you require protection for yourself and your lady fair. If not, you are free to sell it for whatever necessities you'd require around here.".

With that, he hurries to assist Mira with her burden, not sure if she can handle the weight of plate armor on her own.

Conner
Tuesday February 27th, 2007 7:48:39 AM

The fighter eyes the solver bad of metal with curiosity. It seems strange to him that such a simple thing can have the power he senses it does. Carefully, he places it on his head and waits for some feeling of magic to wash over his body. He is mildly dissapointed when he feels nothing. The silversheen, he places in his backpack for the future.

Finished with his own gifts from the Frost Ginny, he wanders over to see what the others have recieved. He admires Mira's full plate and Arm's crossbow in particular.

"That looks like a fine weapon Arm. Does it have magical properties?"

Shadow

Shadow watches in amazement as the group starts pulling many different items out of the bag. When it is his turn he gets a spyglass, "Wow, this might really prove useful in our future work." He says showing it off to everyone.

His second stone turns out to be a mace that seems to be more than just a mace, "Well is anyone able to use this weapon, it does seem to be more than just an ordinary mace?" He will either give it to one of his companions or use it to possibly purchase a different magical item.

When Edmund sees Thar reach again, Edmund's eyes widen. "There's more," he asks incredulously. "Well, let's go for it again!"

Edmund reaches in twice more, as before, once with each hand--except hoping to come out without dessicated body parts this time round.

Kadaz looks at the gem in his hand. "This will occassionally make the air cooler, I believe. An appropriate gift from Ginny. And this" here he holds up a narrow collar "means Birdie will always have sweet smelling breath."

He bends down and ties the new collar just behind Birdies current one. "There you go boy. This is more for me than you, come to think of it.

Kadaz looks at the others pulling more items from the bag. "It appears I was wrong, Ginny is willing to be generous with her gifts. I will try again." When his turn comes Kadaz reaches into the bag and tries to pull out 2 more items. He does so gingerly, not quite sure this will work. (21, 42)

Mira
Tuesday February 27th, 2007 8:13:07 PM

Mira laughs at the full set of plate armor, and slowly and methodically starts to done the gear that would fit any of her companions better than herself. "Come help me Conner! Kadaz! You would know better how this works!" she calls as she fumbles with the buckles and straps. Putting the large visored helmet on her head, she pulls a face for the kids. "I see Frost Ginny has a sense of humour!" she concludes as she gives up on the project of dressing up in the gear.

"I am well recompensed for my efforts," announces the mage as she lifts up the stone and silver whistle, then adjusts the helm the tilts precariously on her head. "I shall not draw again."

Studying the silver whistle she contemplates using it. "I wonder if Mouser would come?" she says, eyeing the halfling child who had taken a liking to the feline. "Shall I blow on it and see?"

Everyone is pleased with their new items, so some decide to try again.

Thar reaches into the bag twice more while hoping for something useful. His second stone shifts into a thin spindle as he removes his hand from the bag. The third stone extends and stretches as his hand leaves the bag until the ranger is holding a finely crafted composite longbow.
Highlight to display spoiler: {Second stone -- A clear spindle that can be triggered to cast Mending once per week.

Edmund also reaches in twice more, withdrawing a stone that grows in size and weight as he withdraws his hand. When he opens it, the black stone is in his palm has left smudges on his skin. The other hand holds a small green stone that is the size of a pea.
Highlight to display spoiler: {Third stone -- a lump of coal.
Fourth stone -- Small green gem, will turn wearer and all equipment green once / week (providing +5 bonus to Hide in vegetation)

Kadaz plunges his hands into the bag twice more. The second stone stretches into a thin wooden stick that everyone recognizes as a wand. The third stone twists into his hand and he also withdraws a composite longbow.
Highlight to display spoiler: {Second stone -- Wand of Bull Strength, 50/50 charge
Third stone -- Masterwork composite longbow +1 STR

While they are drawing items from the bag, Arm hands his new shortspear to Buckle. As soon as the weapon leaves Arm's hand, it transforms into a clear green stone that Buckle peers at in surprise. When the former guardsman holds it up to the light, everyone can see the stone sparkle in the firelight. Buckle passes the stone back to Arm with a shrug and it remains a small green gem.

After fiddling with his new items, Conner joins Arm in helping Mira with the plate armor. The two help Mira with moving the armor about, even helping her don the helm. Nothing happens to the armor when either Conner or Arm handle it. After mugging for the children, Mira wonders if Mouser will come when she blows the whistle. When she looks, the big gray cat is sitting smugly in the hallway just outside the room.

Shadow offers his new mace to his companions since it seems that they can handle each other's gifts. Perhaps some experimentation is needed to determine exactly what can be done with these items.

The little Halfling girl smiles back at Mira when the sorcerer looks that way. She's nearly bouncing with excitement since the little girl can see how the party likes their gifts.

"Are you going to try again? This is so exciting?"

When Edmund looks into his hands this time around, he is momentarily confused, and then he starts laughing.

"I suppose this is her way of saying I'm done," he says with a grin. "A piece of coal, and a pea!" Well, you never know when coal might come in handy, out in the cold... but this is a bit heavy for a pea, though... Oh!"

Edmund notices it is not a pea, but a stone, and he peers at it curiously. "I say, small little thing. I wonder what it is... a tourmaline, maybe? Hmmm... it's magical!"

Edmund puts the coal into his haversack, before shaking the green stone, and then rubbing it, in a desire to activate its functions.

"Hopefully it doesn't explode!" he says with a wink.

Kadaz pulls a wand out of the bag and holds it up. "Hey, Edmund, look what I got" he shouts in glee! "This does the same thing as my tatto, it will make me stronger. Now I just have to figure out how to make it work. Any suggestions?"

He plunges his hand into the bag again and pulls out a long bow. "Hmmm" the fighter ponders. "Never really thought about using one of these. But if that's Ginny's gift, then maybe I should consider it. This is very well made, but not magical."

He looks around at the group and the children watching with wide eyes. "Here kids, check Birdie out. His breath is now fresh" Kadaz nudges Birdie in the direction of the children.

3 pulls for himself are quite enough, Kadaz feels. He looks around at the others trying their gifts. Mira in a plate helmet is quite a sight. Edmund with a lump of coal and a disppointed look is also funny.

Do you think Ginny would mind if any one of us re-gifted one of our presents to another?" While waiting for the cat to answer, she continues, "I believe I could admire my present all the more, if one of my companions were to wear it!"

He notes that while Mira is now shiny, she no longer possesses the typical curves of a female, and has begun to resemble a shiny metal urn, lid and spout included.

Conner does his best to resists the urge to ask if the 'Silverware' needs a polish and instead manages a feeble compliment. Perhaps it's his new headband, he thinks to himself.

After passing the green gem to Buckle with a suggestion to fund the orphanage with it, Arm reaches into the bag a fourth time, trusting that his luck will hold out. The stone grows in both length and weight as he removes his hand until Arm is holding a very large, very heavy sword that should be wielded in both hands.
Highlight to display spoiler: {Fourth stone = Masterwork greatsword}

Shadow reaches in again, too. This time his hand holds a small, white glowing stone.
Highlight to display spoiler: {Third stone -- Squeezing the stone will cool the holder to ambient temperature, usable once / week.}

Edmund stores away the items that he just received while Kadaz brandishes his new wand. Since the dwarf has identified the wand as something beneficial, no one dives for cover as he does so.

On the other side of the room, Conner finishes helping Mira into the armor before sitting back to chuckle at the appearance of the sorcerer. A muffled voice comes from inside the armor asks Mouser if Ginny would mind if the party passed their gifts to others. The children chuckle as the big gray cat rolls onto his back and then emits a very loud, "Mew!".

From where he sits, Thar asks if anyone else wants to try the bag. If they don't, maybe it would be time to wrap it up and let the magic expire. It's too late to start back to Plateau City tonight, but tomorrow promises to be a good day to travel.

Stumbling a bit from the unexpected weight of his newest acquisition, Arm takes a firm grip on the sword and walks over to Mira. He holds it out to her and says with a wry grin, "Perhaps this would complement your new look, my dear." "Ah, if only I had a way to record this scene for future merriment," he thinks.

After the joking is over, he approaches Conner with the sword and hands it to him, "I think YOU would make better use of this than I, my friend.".

Shadow draws out the little white crystal, "Well it looks like this would help if I get into any really hot situations." With that he will put into his haversack and enjoy watching Mira stumble around in the full plate.

"Thank you Arm", the fighter looks over the greatsword and sees that it is obviously of fine quality. "Alas, as fine a blade as it is, I fear I cannot wield it and use my shield at the same time. Using both hands, Mira removes the helm. "I see," she says, looking over at the cat. Setting the heavy head-piece aside, the sorcerer in paladin's clothing shambles over to the feline.

*chink* *chink* *chink*

Bending over the furball she whispers, "don't come me-owing to me when that little moppet starts hauling you around by the tail!" The sorcerer's face is flushed from the effort, her hair damp from the exertion, but her green eyes sparkle merrily, and the cat should sense no real threat.(Bluff=17)

Returning to the party she asks Arm to help her out of her armor...then promptly regrets voicing her request out loud. "Let us have a 'night-cap' to drink a toast to the manor home, and good health to all who sleep under its roof. Then, we must retire." Out of earshot of the children she says, "we should return to Plateau City and send word to the Crimson Shield's that all is well with the orphans...as soon as possible." Turning to Kay and Buckle, she adds, "give us a list of anything else you think you might need. We will bring it back to the city. One way of the other, these children will have what they need to grow and prosper."

Wrapping Up (DM JohnP)
Thursday March 1st, 2007 11:00:44 PM

The party sits with the children, Kay and Buckle in the front room of the orphanage. No one wants to try their luck again with the bag, so it is closed and folded away. Mira continues to joke with her companions and the children, clomping across the floor to quietly berate the innocent-seeming Mouser. The cat rolls around on the floor, seeming to enjoy the attention without any sign of understanding the sorcerer's words.

There are offers to trade or exchange items amongst the party but no one makes any definite commitment. Kay and Buckle use this moment, as the excitement of watching the party draw from the bag fades, to begin sending children upstairs to bed. The youngest and oldest are sent first, the older ones assigned to help the younger. It's not very long before all of the children are upstairs and the party is sitting by themselves while Kay and Buckle finish bedtime. Mouser has been sitting quietly while all of this has been happening, watching the children go upstairs and tolerating any hugs or squeezes. Once the room is empty of everyone but the party, the cat looks up at Mira.

"Don't blow my cover! I want to be just a cat while I'm here, so don't talk to me. I might slip back and forth, to Gwenever's and back, depending on how I get treated."

"Gwenever's gifts are for you to use, although you can share amongst yourselves. You've seen what happened when Arm gave his gift away. Use the gifts in health, but don't expect wealth from Gwenever's purse."

Mouser must have heard something because he glances towards the hall and then slinks out towards the kitchen. A moment later, Kay and Buckle return to the room, holding hands. Kay sits in her chair while Buckle picks up various bits of wrapping and mess from the presents. When Mira suggests making up a list of needed goods, the pair smiles.

"Thank you, for everything. The food, the gifts, it was all so much. Please take word back to the Crimson Shields that it all arrived. As for a list, I'm sure that Kay can make something up by morning. It's been a long and tiring day, so we're off to bed. If you want to stay, please ensure that the fire is banked and the doors bolted. See you in the morning."

Kay and Buckle stand and head upstairs, still holding hands. Several of the party follow suit, getting ready to head back to Plateau City in the morning. Eventually, everyone finishes talking and prepares to sleep.

++++++

The night passes quietly except for the wind outside. Once, somewhere in the middle of the night, the sounds of heavy cat feet can be heard on the stairs but that's the only disturbance. Even the children are quiet all night.

The party is invited to breakfast in the morning, with Kay insisting on them eating before they start the trip back to Plateau City with Tyrus and his cart.

Edmund sleeps well and extensively, getting more than his fair share of shut-eye in before rising, almost too late for breakfast. He appears almost as if summoned right as the food is being laid out. It's uncanny, really!

"Off soon!?" he enquires, cheerily. "Fine place this, but I want--nay, need--a bath!"

Arm
Friday March 2nd, 2007 5:45:59 AM

Smiling at Conner, he whispers to him, "If Kadaz DID take the sword, it would be as humorous as having Mira wield it, I'd wager.".

The next morning, Arm eats heartily of the repast before him, not realizing until now how hungry he is. As far as the sword goes, he contemplates hanging it up in the apartment once they get home, both as decoration and as an inspiration of the group's strength.

Before they leave, he inquires with Kay about the list of things they may need.

He hums as he works, and seems to enjoy the exertion as small beads of sweat adorn his heavy frame.

Kay, Buckle and all of the children come outside to bid the party farewell. There are lots of waves as they depart and shouts of "Bye!" as they head up the lane with Tyrus and the cart.

Unless they really care to stop, the trip back to Plateau City is uneventful. There isn't much traffic on the day after Midwinter but there is some, mainly people heading back and forth from visiting friends and family. The inns are open, if anyone chooses to stop, but Tyrus would much rather push to get back to the City.

The guards at the gate request the toll as the cart rolls beneath the portcullis. The streets of the City seem crowded and close after spending a couple days out in the countryside, but the sounds and smells are those of home. Just inside the gate, Tyrus stops the cart and holds out his hand to thank the party. After doing so, he turns to head towards the Von Otten's warehouse. He offers to take the messages and letters to Floating City, or the party can hang onto them.

Crossing the river into the Trade Quarter brings the party into their own backyard. The apartment beckons, but so does Sampson's. They can choose to go to either place.

The burly fighter announces his intention to visit Sampson's for a meal. On his way he stops by the memorial in the Open Palm Market and pauses to reflect for a moment on the happier days before the Fae uprising. "All that destruction" he thinks, "yet the Frost Ginny was not so bad". He finds himself tracing Amy's name in the stone as he puzzles through the contradictions.

Thar ail Baerer
Saturday March 3rd, 2007 11:59:18 AM

After leaving his things at the apartment, Thar checks in at his temple and sees if there are any issues that have come up or new news that he needs to know.

Once that's completed, he'll go to Sampsons and have a bite to eat.

Edmund
Saturday March 3rd, 2007 3:48:07 PM

Upon arriving in Plateau City, Edmund dashes off to the apartment where he seals himself in his room.

For some hours thereafter, a great deal of splashing can be heard from within, and a trickle of water makes its way out from under the door.

Kadaz
Saturday March 3rd, 2007 10:07:44 PM

On the way home Kadaz tries to figure out how to use his new wand. He pushes and pulls at it, waves it in the air, and batting others with it, trying to get it to cast its spell. He finally turns to Edmund. "You know about these things. How do I get this wand to cast its spell on me?"

Once in Plateau City Kadaz votes for sitting in front of a warm fire at Sampson's, with a drink in hand.

When Kadaz enquires about the use of the wand, Edmund turns to him with raised eyebrows.

"To use it? Oh! Quite simple. You just swish and flick."

Arm
Monday March 5th, 2007 5:45:10 AM

After the nonstop hike home, Arm feels especially hungry. After he grabs something to eat, he stops at the bath house for a quick wash-up, then returns to the apartment.

Shadow
Monday March 5th, 2007 9:30:19 AM

Once the group arrives back in the city, Shadow lets out a great sigh of relief. "I am sure glad to be back, and I do vote for Sampson's. I will meet you all there." With that he will go to the apartment and drop off his gear and then heads over to Sampson's. He is planning on having a nice relaxing meal and an ale before he heads over to the "guild" to see what he has missed and report.

Mira
Monday March 5th, 2007 6:31:47 PM

Mira uses the time spent in transit to reflect on the newly formed Mithril Order and the role that each member of the party played. The newer members are finding their place in the group, as the older members skills grow.

The woman is happy with Edmund's newfound confidence, and growing friendship with the dwarf. Shadow seems to be coming out of his shell a little. Arm seems less conflicted, though by no means less complex, the more Mira learns about him. As Thar leads the way home, Mira wonders if he may be one to lead the group in more ways than one.

Bringing up a topic the party had started to discuss earlier, Mira asks if folks have put any more thought into the idea of getting a bigger place, and maybe engaging someone to look after the place when the group is away. Hooking her thumb over her shoulder, she adds, "I'll be needing a place to display my armor, you know!"

*****

After unloading the gear, Mira will go to the bath house with Arm. She will spend a little extra coin to have the ragged ends trimmed off her hair. Back at the apartment she will write a letter to Xenia and the Crimson Shield's, updating them on the affairs of the orphans, Kay, and Buckle. After dropping the note off at the Van Ottens, she will head for Sampson's for a meal.
