Settling In (DM JohnP) Monday March 5th, 2007 10:23:35 PM
Everyone goes about their business, getting back into the rhythym of the City after the return from the trip. For some, that means a long relaxing bath. For others, it means sharing some ales and relating tales of their adventures.
Everyone has plans for what they want to do, whether it be staying as close to the bar at Sampson's or doing some shopping. Conner stops by the monument in Open Palm Market, finding it shrouded in a layer of wet snow. A thin layer of ice clings to the north side, filling some of the engraving.
Thar heads to his temple and finds a service marking Midwinter in progress. Joining the back of the crowd provides a chance to exchange gossip when the service ends, but Thar hears nothing of significance.
Shadow makes plans to check in with the Guild but doesn't do so quite yet.
Mira goes to the bathhouse with Arm and both get the roadgrime removed. Afterwards, Mira composes a letter to accompany the notes to the Crimson Shields in Floating City.
All in all, it's a quiet time in the middle of the winter. The next day dawns grey and overcast, with wind whistling around the eaves of the apartment. A good time to stay indoors, if they choose.
Arm Tuesday March 6th, 2007 5:43:48 AM
Shivering a bit after leaving the bath house with Mira, Arm pulls her closer to him as they make their way back to the apartment. Once her letter is written and dropped off, they head to Samson's for some hot food and for him at least, some hot spiced cider, which he has taken quite a liking to as of late.
Once they are seated and relaxed, he opens the conversation, "So, what do you all think about getting a larger place to live? Not only would it besuit our status to potential customers, but it would also afford us the opportunity to spread out some and make us feel like we each have a home instead of sharing one.".
Kadaz Tuesday March 6th, 2007 7:25:03 AM
Kadaz decides it's time for all those little chores he's put off too long. He gets up early in the morning and starts off, cleaning armor, brushing and oiling leather, sharpening whatever has gotten dull. And to top it all off, it's bathtime for Birdie!
Finishing just before supper, he also hits the baths and then off to Sampsons.
At Sampson's he listen's to Arm's suggestions. "What's wrong with where we live now?" Kadaz grew up in a barracks and can't imaging not living in crowded quarters. "If we live apart we can't come to each other's aid if we're attacked."
Shadow Tuesday March 6th, 2007 9:23:06 AM
After the relaxing ale and dinner at Sampson's, Shadow will head over to the "Guild" and see what has happened in the city. He will also report what occured to the Night/Daymaster (which ever one is present at the time).
Thar ail Baerer Tuesday March 6th, 2007 10:18:21 AM
After meeting his friends at Sampsons, Thar relaxes and enjoys his meal. Considering Arm's comments, Thar says "You've got a good point about getting a bigger place, but Kadaz also has some valid concerns. What about considering Ed's ideas about getting a large house on the edge of town? We'd have large, private rooms, but still be in the same estate to protect each other. Also, we could build some rooms for training, exercise, along with a community eating area?"
Mira Tuesday March 6th, 2007 12:32:48 PM
Nodding her head at the suggestions, Mira adds her two cents. "A bigger place, and one that we own rather than rent!" Warming to the subject, she continues the train of thought started by others, "yes! An area for physical training, but also a library for quiet reflection and study, and a laboratory for magical experiments and such!" More suggestions by the others, and then "we also need to be able to conduct our business affairs away from prying eyes."
Conner Tuesday March 6th, 2007 12:40:25 PM
"A courtyard...with a garden," comes from the tough fighter as he stares unseeingly at his ale, remembering the sunbaked patio where his mom grew herbs and flowers, and he rough-housed in the dust with his brothers. Clearing his throat, he catches some looking at him, "...for weapons practice out-of-doors."
"But where do we look?" Conner doesn't relish another visit to see the city officials.
Edmund Tuesday March 6th, 2007 5:15:19 PM
At long last, Edmund arrives, clean as clean can be. His clothes have also been cleaned, and the overall impression is one of starched perfection.
Having heard the last few words of the conversation from Conner, he announces his presence by offering his own suggestion.
"Where do we look?" he echoes rhetorically. "Should be obvious--we talk to the city officials in charge of the establishment of guildhalls, group residencies, and hostels, I expect."
Maybe Edmund notices a look on Conner's face at the suggestion, because he quickly adds, "I'd be happy to go down and have a chat with them myself, to see if I can get it all sorted out for us, and maybe even get us a good deal. You'll need to know what you want, though. Magistrates generally don't like it when people come before them without required information."
Edmund pulls up a chair and orders some tea while they work out what requirements they would have of an headquarters for the Order. "The only thing I need," Edmund puts in, "Is room for a library-slash-study. Somewhere I can do my research, what? A bath hall would be desireable, but hardly what I'd call essential."
House Planning (DM JohnP) Tuesday March 6th, 2007 10:30:20 PM
The party attends to their different errands in the City. In fact, a lot of their time is taken with debating the merits of different accomodations. No clear decisions are made but Edmund does volunteer to talk to the city officials.
After the discussion, Shadow heads off to the Guild to talk to the Daymaster. After gaining entrance, he is ushered in quite quickly to see the Daymaster. As he relates the tale of the missing carter, the man nods thoughtfully before concluding with a shiver.
"Country-folk! No money to made in stealing cabbages! That's why I stay in town. Keep in touch, why don't you?"
When Shadow returns, the debate over housing is still continuing.
OOC - Firm up what kind of place you want, then send Edmund and whoever off to look into it.
You can figure on a couple months downtime if your character has some things that they want to do. And keep working on the character sheets!
Arm Wednesday March 7th, 2007 5:53:27 AM
Arm looks to Kadaz, then to Thar, "I am sorry if I was misunderstood. What you just stated is what I had in mind...a larger place to call home, but still staying together. The LAST thing I want to do is to split us up.".
To Ed, he says, "you may want to ask the officials about any empty houses in the area. Since the Fae King problem, there are probably quite a few places that either people have abandoned or unfortunately are not alive anymore to occupy. It would be a fitting memory to them to maintain whatever place they called home, while calling it OUR home at the same time.".
Kadaz Wednesday March 7th, 2007 6:53:41 AM
"Ok Arm, that is clearer to me. I'm pretty easy about this. Edmund, go find us something appropriate. And the closer to Sampson's here the better."
Kadaz goes back to trying to activate his wand like Edmund showed him. Swish, flick. Swich flick. Maybe flick, swich. Nothing seems to work.
Shadow Wednesday March 7th, 2007 9:30:18 AM
Shadow has mixed feelings about the calmness of the "guild". On one hand that means no major problems, but on the other hand it worries him a little when nothing is going on.
When he returns to the house he hears the debate and decides to add his own comments, "I have very few needs, but a room to myself would be good. I was also thinking we might want to hire a cook if we are really looking at having a house. I enjoy going to Sampson's but it would also be nice to have a cook and eat at 'home'." He says the last with a longing look.
Thar ail Baerer Wednesday March 7th, 2007 11:00:21 AM
Mouth watering at the idea of home cooked meals, Thar says to Shadow "Mmm, that sounds good to have a cook. I'm all for eating good food and have a nice relaxing meal at home every once in a while."
Going back to the subject of finding a house, he adds "Well, I'm ambivalent about the type of house, but I'd like to have one that has some wooded areas around it, where we could have some deer and other small game to hunt every once in a while."
Thinking about the religous side of his vocation, he says "We should also have the house blessed and cleaned of any residual magic before we move in, if there is any. Also, it should be defensible if needed in case of assault by those who don't want to invite us over for dinner."
Edmund Wednesday March 7th, 2007 1:57:17 PM
Edmund produces a piece of paper, a small bottle of ink, and a quill pen from his waistcoat pockets, and sets to writing down the requests, suggestions, and ideas of the others. During this exercise, a great deal of ink ends up flicked in various directions thanks to Edmund's loopy, spidery handwriting. Yet somehow, probably from practise, he manages to avoid getting any ink on himself. When he is done, there may be more ink off of the paper then on, but the paper itself has all of the suggestions recorded in a flowing script which looks like it belongs in an ancient tome of forgotten lore.
"Hmm, anything else," Edmund asks, "before I head off to schedule a meeting with the housing people? Speak now or forever hold your peace!"
Thar ail Baerer (2nd post) Wednesday March 7th, 2007 5:15:42 PM
After inspecting his bow, Thar says "Hey everyone, it looks like I can't really use this +4 Strength Composite LongBow, as I only am strong enough to use a +2 Strength Composite LongBow. Does anyone want to trade something for this item?"
Mira Wednesday March 7th, 2007 6:11:38 PM
"I'm afraid not everyone can use a wand, Kadaz," volunteers the sorcerer gently, "unless you dedicate a great deal of time to the practice of using magical devices." Mira looks apologetically at the dwarven fighter. "If you want, I could try to teach you, but," the woman lays a hand on Kadaz's shoulder, "your efforts would likely reap better fruit if otherwise employed."
Reaching out her hand, the woman asks, "wanna see what this baby can do?" If Kadaz hands over the wand, and is in agreement, Mira will tap him with the stick using a fairly common activation word.
*****
"...a yard of some sort with trees and a garden and enough room for combat practice...a library, dining hall, and decent sized kitchen...a room for each of us, and maybe a suite or cottage for a caretaker and a cook...as well as a bath house. Gotta' have a hidden entry and a few secret rooms and passages...somewhere central like the Trade or Guild Quarter..."
Mira will volunteer to accompany Edmund regarding the realestate, but first she will set her pink and green Ioun stone to circling about her head. On the way she will say to Edmund, "I've got a few scrolls you might like to check out..."
Conner Wednesday March 7th, 2007 6:57:59 PM
The fighter spends some time cleaning up his gear, and taking inventory of what needs fixing or replacement. Catching a glimpse of the delicate circlet, so incongruous on his shaved and tattooed skull, above his bushy eyebrows and fierce dark eyes, the fighter flushes a little, then grins. He does enjoy the added feeling of confidence it instills.
When the woman and skinny wizard get ready to leave, Conner falls into step behind them. He is wearing most of his gear. Much as he dislikes dealing with city official-types, he's not letting those two out without an escort.
House Shopping (DM JohnP) Wednesday March 7th, 2007 10:21:26 PM
The party sits in the apartment and discusses what features would be desirable in a shared house. It isn't long before the list is quite long. Edmund scribbles away, recording suggestions of yards, private rooms, kitchens, libraries, laboratories, practice rooms, gardens and everything else. Finally, the list is near complete.
With Conner escorting them, Edmund and Mira set out to the City Administration building. The walk through the streets is unpleasant due to the damp cold wind and the slush in the street. Even Conner's water-proofed boots soon start looking worse for the exposure.
After the trio reach City Hall, signs indicate that they have two choices. They might go to the office called "Licensing and Permits" but Conner has a lingering twitch from his last encounter with that office. There's also the Taxation office where they might inquire about properties being sold by the City.
Meanwhile, back at the apartment, the others listen to rain or frozen ice pellets hit the shutters. Kadaz steps over Birdie to toss some more fuel on the fire to keep himself, Shadow, Thar and Arm comfortable and cozy.
Kadaz Wednesday March 7th, 2007 11:17:36 PM
Kadaz takes Thar up on the trade offer. "I received from Ginny this masterwork composite longbow built for a person slightly stonger than normal. (+1 strength) And I am strong enough to use that bow you have. So how about a trade?"
When Mira taps him with the wand Kadaz's strength suddenly increases. "Mira, you can use it! It's not broken. Here, you take it and use it as necessary. I can cast that spell on myself twice a day so I will come to you if I need it more than that. And you can use it on Conner or whomever else needes it." (wand of bulls strength, 49 charges left)
Once back home Kadaz relaxes with those not running errands. He idly daydreams of a different house, with individual rooms, and a more comfortable common room. It sounds cold out there and he's had enough of the cold.
Birdie feels the cold seep in under the door. He moves a bit closer to the fire and looks around very carefully, searching for a cat that shouldn't be there.
Arm Thursday March 8th, 2007 5:54:51 AM
Watching Birdie's attempts to fend off the cold, Arm says to the rest, "Seems our canine friend is in agreement...we DO need a new place to stay.".
Shadow Thursday March 8th, 2007 9:33:17 AM
Shadow decides today will be a good day to sit inside and relax from the groups last ordeal. He will enjoy the warmth of the fire, and will also picture, in his mind, the house they all have given comments to try and find.
Before he knows it he is fast asleep in the main room sitting in a comfy chair before the fire. His dreams are about the combat outside the Ginny's camp, and how he was so non-effective in that battle. When he wakes he finds that the fire has burned down quite a bit, and he tries to shake the feelings he has from his dream.
Thar ail Baerer Thursday March 8th, 2007 10:14:48 AM
Smiling that someone can make good use of his weapon, Thar says "Sure Kadaz, that's a great idea. Enjoy!"
He hands over his +4 Str bow and take the +1 Str bow from Kadaz. Sitting back, he admires the new weapon and feels its pull and tension.
Edmund Thursday March 8th, 2007 6:50:10 PM
On the way through town, Edmund says evenly, "I think licensing and permits would be the best place to go first. It will be of little avail to try and buy properties only to find out we lack the appropriate permit--or worse, to have it seized because we failed to acquire a permit."
"As for taxation," Edmund remarks, "I suspect there will be forms for that as well. It is not usually enough that you pay your taxes--you usually have a mountain of forms to turn in with them. Once we have the property, we'll know what we need to tell the taxation people."
Mira Thursday March 8th, 2007 9:09:32 PM Licensing and Permits...Mira remembers the clerk who had so frustrated Conner with paperwork, and the trio of bureaucrats who had to be convinced of the merit of the fighters project to set up a monument in remembrance of those who had died during the...troubles.
"Um, Edmund?" she says, tugging at the wizard's sleeve. Lets check with "Taxation" first. We could learn if there are any places in arears that might be got for cheap. You know, we pay the back taxes, fix the place up?"
Edmund (2nd, illegal post) Thursday March 8th, 2007 10:47:35 PM
"Hmm?"
Edmund blinks at the suggestion from Mira, a bit surprised. "Generally, one should obtain the proper forms and fulfill any necessary prior steps before embarking on something as momentous as purchase of property. Otherwise, there may be grounds for seizure of aforementioned property as a result of the purchasing party's failure to comply with local regulations, ordinances, and-or bylaws."
Edmund shakes his head, "If we are going to do this, we really should do it by the book, otherwise there may be problems later. I don't want there to be any excuse for the local authorities to shut us down, so it would be best to jump through whatever hoops they may establish for us. Furthermore, I am certain I can work my way through whatever paperwork they may assign of us. They are doubtless reasonable enough people, given the right sort of motivation."
Edmund smiles knowingly, patting her arm lightly. "No fear, eh? I've lots of experience with this sort of thing. Never cut corners when dealing with officious magistrates--it may save you time in the short term, but when they find out, you're stuffed."
At City Hall (DM JohnP) Friday March 9th, 2007 12:08:31 AM
In City Hall, Edmund and Mira finish their whispered conversation in the hallway while Conner stands by. Edmund is certain that they need to go to the licensing office first, so he heads off down the corridor in that direction. When they find the door marked with Licenses and Permits, Edmund opens the door and peers inside. He's somewhat taken aback by the large number of people sitting on the benches inside and the single clerk working behind the counter. The people waiting on the benches are clutching numbered cards and pointedly glance at more cards suspended from a peg near the counter. Glancing back at Mira, Edmund picks up a card and turns to sit on a bench. Unfortunately, there aren't three seats together so the group has to sit separately.
Finally, after a long time waiting, the number on the card clutched in Edmund's sweating hands is called out by the clerk. With Mira at his side, he moves up to the counter. The clerk's bored voice begins asking questions of the pair as the elderly human man passes papers across to them.
"What licenses do you want? Oh. Take these, fill them out in triplicate and come back. Make sure you indicate the address of the building that you want to convert to this new use? It is a new use permit, right?"
"What? You don't know? How could you not know? What's that? You wanted to get the permits before you bought the building? How silly! You can't do that ... you have to apply for a building and approval depends on inspection and the planning board."
It soon becomes evident that Mira's caution was warranted. At least Edmund has the blank forms, though. Conner's tattoo is starting to pulse by this point so Mira steers everyone back out into the corridor. They go back to the Taxation office but the door is closed. There is a posted notice, though, that lists properties that are in tax arrears. A quick review finds several addresses in Trade and Guild Quarters, and some of them might fit their needs.
++++++
Meanwhile back at the apartment, Thar and Kadaz do some weapon trading while Arm and Shadow doze. What ever is keeping the others?
DM OOC - Two things: 1) Please keep updating those Character sheets and send them in! 2) There's going to be a new player joining the game so we'll be back to a full complement.
Edmund Friday March 9th, 2007 1:03:48 AM
Despite the litigious setbacks, Edmund remains cheery. In fact, the more obstropulous and difficult the bureaucracy, the cheerier Edmund becomes. He clutches the paperwork, examining it in minute detail.
"Planning board! Excellent..."
What Edmund does not do is take much notice of the addresses on the Trade and Guild Quarters. He dismisses them entirely with a wave of his hand, without even looking up from his forms.
"Oh, those? No, most unwise, best to follow instructions. Once we get back to the apartments I'll get to work on these. I'm going to need some red ink, too. Do we have a summary of our earnings, total liquid assets, and holdings in property? I'll need a total, and individual accounts as well, including any taxes paid to the corporation of the city, less any grants received, unless those grants were defined taxable in the fiscal year in which they were issued..."
Edmund continues like this until they return to the apartments, at which points he dashes off to his room to begin working on the forms. leaving everyone else to figure out what they would like to do in his absence regarding the properties in arrears.
Arm Friday March 9th, 2007 5:43:12 AM
Aarm sits by idly strumming his lute, finally being able to relax for any length of time.
When Mira returns, he will quiz her on the prospective buildings to look at, then set up some plan to investigate them.
Shadow Friday March 9th, 2007 9:35:00 AM
Shadow goes in and out of sleep while waiting for the return of the others.
After a while of doing the head nodding thing he decides it might be benificial to take care of the apartment and his gear. He will straighten up his shared room and then get his gear. He will oil and sharpen his daggers, oil his rapier and make sure his black leather is not showing too much wear (if it is he will ask one of those talented with magic to "mend" it when they return).
Thar ail Baerer Friday March 9th, 2007 11:53:02 AM
Thar, enjoying the extended break, rests up and practices with his new bow. He goes to the nearest wooded area that is large enough for hunting and tries to catch a large game animal, such as a deer or elk. If he's lucky, he'll strip it, quarter it and bring it back for a good old fashioned cookout with his companions. "Nothing like fresh meat to cook and its much better than those dried rations we live on when we're adventuring out and about," he says, appreciating the fresh cooked meal.
Kadaz Friday March 9th, 2007 6:00:38 PM
Kadaz watches Edmund's eagerness to tackle the mountains of paperwork with a bemused grin. He looks over at Arm and Mira and smiles at them. Glad to see someone is digging into the task.
Kadaz spends his lazy days training and trying to keep in shape. Mornings are spent working out with Conner or Thar, the afternoons walking the town visiting old friends.
Kadaz does search out a sage of the fey. The Mithril Order has had a number of encounters with fey lately and Kadaz wants to learn a bit more about them. "Anyone want to come with me and visit a scholar?" he asks the group.
Conner Friday March 9th, 2007 8:10:15 PM
Unamused by the officious bureaucrats at city hall, the fighter is glad not to have to deal with them anew. He scans the list of properties and deliberately walks by them on the way back to the apartments. If there are any that look suitable to him, he takes note and will recommend them when the time is right.
Real Estate Tour (DM JohnP) Sunday March 11th, 2007 2:17:35 PM
After disappears into his room with the forms and pots of ink in several others, Mira and Conner share what they learned about properties being sold by the City in Trade and Guild Quarters.
There are six places, in total, between the two Quarters. Arm and Conner take the lead in this, although the others join them when they can. Thar is spending as much time as possible outside the City, practising with his new bow and providing meat for the table.
Kadaz is mainly trying to find a scholar of the fey. From a muttered suggestion from Edmund, Kadaz tries the University of Magic first, over in Merchant Quarter. After several attempts at describing what he wants to learn, the dwarf is directed to an office high in one of the university towers where he finds a small, wizened woman inside an office crowded with all sorts of strange items. DM Note - What exactly do you hope to learn?
The party is able to find all the properties listed for Trade and Guild Quarters. Nothing really matches what they listed as desirable qualities.
Riverside Road, Guild Quarter This place was once a large home, from outward appearances. Some time in the past it was subdivided into small rooms and apartments for students at the nearby University and clerks working in the Quarter. Today, the building is looking very dirty and unkempt and there is a lingering smell of sulphur and other less-identifiable substances. Questions to the tenants reveals that the landlord perished in the Troubles and no one has since either collected rents or done any repairs.
Armor Road, Guild Quarter This is an abandoned workshop, with living quarters overhead. When Kadaz examines the place, he thinks that dwarfs were the last tenants and they were involved in the armorcrafting business although any movable objects, including the anvils and forges, have been removed. The neighbours indicate that the Brighthammers moved away after the Troubles.
Helm's Way. Trade Quarter This three-story apartment building is still covered with withered and brown vines that grew from the park outside the Temple of Caerolda behind it. From the street, it looks like an much nicer bulding that the one where the party currently resides. The front doors, however, are bound with a stout cord and sealed with the symbols of the City Guard and Constables.
Twisting Alley near Flying Fish Tavern, Trade Quarter This building is familiar because it was where the three rogues connected to Lady Ilonia adn the Chalice cult were hiding. The rank odour of sewage and stagnant water is evident from a couple doors away. A large placard is posted on both front and back doors, "CONDEMNED - UNFIT FOR HABITATION".
Gauntlet Street, Trade Quarter This place is also familiar since it is the former home of Fendrik Vedder of the Plateau City Defence League. The large tree still grows near the front door of the collapsed building.
Purse Street, Trade Quarter This three-story building houses a ground floor restaurant and apartments on the upper floors. The waiters defer to the cook and owner, who insists that the taxes were in fact paid. Or will be soon, since it's simply a misunderstanding about assessment.
Not very satisfying, all in all. Perhaps the party should look farther afield, or did they want to examine one of these more closely?
Conner Sunday March 11th, 2007 4:01:33 PM
"The best of the lot appears to be the building on Helm's Way that backs onto the temple's gardens. Seems to have been secured by the guard, but I don't know why. Perhaps Kadaz and I can check it out through his contacts. Perhaps Mira and Edmund can check out what's available in the other quarters "
If Kadaz agrees to follow up with the guard, the fighter will accompany the dwarf on this mission.
Edmund Sunday March 11th, 2007 11:15:04 PM
When the others return from their excursion, Edmund is sitting in the common room with a stack of completed forms before him. He is drinking some tea, and clearly has been waiting for a while.
"Forms all done!" he declares enthusiastically. "Have you picked out a property yet? Something with a bit of garden, what?" Once you do, we can turn these forms in to the planning board and the licenses and permits department.
Mira d20+9=17 Sunday March 11th, 2007 11:24:32 PM
Mira agrees with Conner's assessment of the place on Helm's Way. "It's near enough to our regular stomping grounds, and there is the park in the back..." she adds. "I wonder why it is off limits?"
When the fighters go to check with the city law-keepers, Mira will suggest to Edmund that they go see the city officials and ask if the party might get permission to check the place out. She also makes an enquiry about possible properties in the Rogue Quarter and Circus Quarter.
Diplomacy=17
Arm Monday March 12th, 2007 5:58:27 AM
Arm agrees with Conner on the Helm's way property, "Perhaps they had some troubles inside that we can help clear up, and if so, we may be able to obtain the property at a discount.". He with then tag along with them while they investigate it, if they so choose.
Kadaz Monday March 12th, 2007 7:06:16 AM
Kadaz quickly agrees with Conner that a little bit of research at the nearby Guard post is in order. "But first" Kadaz recommends "let me buy some sweet pastries and meat pies. I know what they like."
Kadaz will follow Edmund's suggestion about contacting a sage at the University of Magic. When introduced to the sage he asks a number of questions. "What exactly are fey? Where do they normally live? How big or small can they be? What are their strengths and weaknesses? What language to they speak and can you teach it to me? And how much will this cost?" Kadaz is willing to share his recent experiences with fey as part of this exchange.
Shadow d20+7=11 d20+10=22 d20+9=20 Monday March 12th, 2007 10:01:52 AM
Shadow liked the idea of searching for a new residence, but when the group starts to look he finds himself very bored. When the group finds the house on Helm street secured he says, "I would like to investigate this house. No, I won't enter it, but it would not hurt to take a look around." With that Shadow will move around the house to get a feel of it, and will see if there are any windows near the ground level to peer into. Also, he will look for any walls/trees to climb to peer into the upper level windows.
Thar ail Baerer Monday March 12th, 2007 10:16:36 AM
Weighing in with his opinion, Thar says "I'm not an expert on fashion or choosing houses, so I'll join Shadow in searching around the property. You all have similar desires to what I want, so I'll support your decision."
He'll join Shadow and look around the property, making sure that it would be difficult for someone to enter the residence w/o being detected.
More House Hunting (DM JohnP) Monday March 12th, 2007 10:37:54 PM
Edmund emerges from his room with the completed forms, ready to head back to the City Administration and complete the registration process. He's a little disheartened when he learns that the others haven't got that far yet.
After discussing what they saw, the rest of the party is most interested in the apartment building on Helm's Way since it is so close to Sampson's and some of their other haunts. Shadow and Thar go to learn what they can from the outside. Since the park is not as busy as the street, they decide to see what they can from that side. The pair attract some strange looks as they loiter in the park behind the Temple of Caeroldra but they patiently wait until they can climb some trees unobserved. It helps that the apartment house has larger windows on this side, so they can look in to see that the building is still furnished. The decor is rather ornate, almost overtop, but the only thing odd that they notice is that the building is organized more like a hotel since they only see bedrooms.
Mira heads back to the City Administration and inquires about viewing the building on Helm's Way. The clerk checks some notes and replies that viewing would be at the discretion of the City Guard. While there, the sorcerer learns that there aren't any places available for back taxes in Circus Quarter but there are several in Rogue Quarter. Unfortunately, most seem to be right on the border with Nightmare Quarter.
Kadaz goes off to visit his former comrades with Conner and Arm along. After picking up some pastries, the trio stop at the local Guard post. Sergeant Tomin is there and several others recognize the adventurers from the problems with Lady Ilonia. Questions about the building on Helm's Way first bring loud laughter and smiles before Sergeant Tomin says anything.
"Why would you want that place? Maybe you didn't hear, since I think it was a couple months back when you weren't around. I've heard that the City wants to sell it, but nothing's going to happen until the Constables and Magistrates get to the bottom of whatever was going on there. 'Specially since they don't know who really owns it, after all."
"Heh, have you had any run-ins with those Defense League clowns? Suppose not, but they're still trouble, 'specially down near the Market?"
DM Note (JohnP) Monday March 12th, 2007 10:39:00 PM Please keep working on the character sheets. Sometime in the next week or so, the new player will be introduced, also.
Arm d20+12=32 Tuesday March 13th, 2007 5:49:23 AM
After a glance at his comrades, Arm says to the segeant, "If we have your permission, we would be willing to investigate the house, then report back to the constables, magistrate, and of course yourself." (diplomacy=32, nat. 20).
Shadow d20+10=30 d20+7=21 Tuesday March 13th, 2007 9:49:13 AM
Shadow climbs the tree and gets a good look into the house, but is a little surprised at really only seeing bedrooms. He tries to get a mental map of the layout and then will climb back down.
"Not much to report, other than it appears to still be furnished." He looks for anything else around the area that might give why the house was closed by the local guard.

Thar ail Baerer Tuesday March 13th, 2007 11:14:02 AM
While the group is inspecting the building, Thar will take the list of potential homes and check with the temple on any information that they may have, especially the history and circumstances that caused the vacancy.
Kadaz Tuesday March 13th, 2007 5:50:48 PM
Kadaz adds his agreement to Arm's. "Sgt Tomlin, you know us. We won't disturb anything. But what happened that's so funny? We did miss a lot, it seems."
Edmund Tuesday March 13th, 2007 8:06:04 PM
Edmund uses the free time to study his spellbook and have a bath or two, content to make good use of the leisure time he's been accorded.
"Cleanliness is next to Godliness, dontcha know!" he says to any who ask.
The House on Helm's Way (DM JohnP) Tuesday March 13th, 2007 11:03:36 PM
Kadaz and Arm, along with the silent Conner, persuade Sergeant Tomin to part with more information. The old Guard Sergeant laughs as he reaches for the last pastry, happy to recount the tale.
"Well, the place was a bawdy house! Course, nothing too unusual about that. But some people went missing after the Troubles were over, and the one common thing the Constables found was that house. We couldn't find anything so the magistrates simply closed the place down."
"Well, it's been nice swapping tales. That was a real interesting story about your trip to the country. But no can do, I can't let you inside. Maybe the Constables or Magistrates can, but not me. Wish I could, you being upstanding folks and all, and I'd speak for you, but can't do it."
With that, Tomin finishes the last of the pastry and moves to stand. He sees the three out of the Guard post.
When the trio get back, their information makes sense of what Thar and Shadow saw from the park. Shadow didn't find any clues on the outside of the building but did notice some concealed and secret entrances in exterior alcoves.
Thar had gone off to learn more about the other addresses in the other parts of the City. He doesn't learn anything too interesting - the usual tales of business failure or buildings abandoned after the Troubles.
Back at the apartment, Edmund is depleting the hot water supply. In his bath, he can ignore the late winter rains outside. When Kadaz returns, he speaks with the dwarf about what the scholar told the dwarf about fey.
DM Note - And I'll add that tomorrow.
Arm Wednesday March 14th, 2007 8:21:03 AM
After they reconvene at the apartment, Arm says, "Well, it seems a trip to the Magistrate is in order. Since he outranks the constables, it seems only right to head for the top, as it were. I'm sure that, with the sergeant's backing, we'll have no trouble being granted entrance. Also, even if the place DOES prove to be not to our liking, we may be able to garner some extra coins through our investigation.".
Shadow Wednesday March 14th, 2007 9:25:43 AM
He marks the hidden entrances in his mind, and does not say anything to the group here.
When they return to the apartment, "Well just so everyone knows. I did find a couple of hidden entrances into the house, so if you would like I could go scouting before you talk to the magistrate. I will wait if you feel it prudent to do so." He looks at his companions waiting for some type of response.
Thar ail Baerer Wednesday March 14th, 2007 12:03:37 PM
Wanting to be useful but realizing that he has no clue how the legalistic procedures work for houses, Thar says "I'll join Shadow, if everyone is OK w/ us scouting. I doubt my church has much pull with the authorities here and I'm not the most diplomatic sort when dealing w/ bureucrats."
Edmund Wednesday March 14th, 2007 4:39:21 PM
Edmund continues to enjoy his free time, content to simply wait until the others find an appropriate property--this is probably for the best, because God only knows what sorts of things he'd have to say if he knew they were trying to buy a former brothel.
If the others return to the apartment, they will find Edmund writing a letter to his brother in which his exploits are detailed. These exploits are somewhat... exaggerated in their nature, and, as usual, Edmund's presence seems to come heavily into play in the course of his relation. Indeed, from the letter, one would imagine he personally assembled the entire group, trained them himself, and saved their lives numerous times.
Strangely, the one thing Edmund could justifiably be proud of--the incident with the cold ones--is conspicuously absent from his letter. In fact, Edmund doesn't mention the event at all, choosing to instead talk about how he is at present busily engaged in finding a new Castle for his followers.
After this, Edmund will take some supper and tea, and then early to bed. Such is the busy life of the Saviour of Plateau City.
Mira d20+3=8 Wednesday March 14th, 2007 7:06:03 PM
Mira listens listens to what Shadow and Thar have to say about what they saw, and then adds the information gathered from the guards by Conner, Kadaz, and Arm. "Sounds like some of Caeroldra's followers," she says aloud. "Maybe someone was trying to make a profit from their, ahem dedication."
The sorcerer tries to remember what the law is in Plateau City vis-a-vis ladies (or gents) of the night.
"Maybe the magistrate and the city officials will look with favour on The Mithril Order if we offer to pay the back taxes on the place, and clean it up?"
"Edmund? Arm? You ready for another diplomatic mission to see the local beaurocrats?"
(OOC-DM JohnP, did you get Mira's sheet?-Carla)
Edmund (2nd, illegal post) Wednesday March 14th, 2007 7:19:46 PM
When Mira asks, Edmund is only too happy to quit his bed and head out, on the spot, to meet with the people in question.
"I've got all of the forms right here, and I've triple-checked them, too! Just give the word!"
Conner d20+1=13 Wednesday March 14th, 2007 10:42:20 PM
"I'll go along to see the constable" Conner intones. "Can't see why they'd keep us from moving in. It's not like we're undesirables, is it?"
The fighter keeps pace with Mira and the others, and only speaks if a question is directed towards him. [Diplomacy=13]
The Fey and the Magistrates (DM JohnP) Wednesday March 14th, 2007 10:58:38 PM
Kadaz recounts what he learned of fey from the scholar at the university. He doubts some of what he was told, but the scholar did seem sure. And he was fascinated by the tale of Frost Ginny, so he waves away any suggestion of payment.
"Fey are the living embodiment of the will of Eberyon, the elements combined and made flesh. Not quite the same as elementals, but close."
"Many fey reside with Eberyon in the Wold's Cradle, or with Maab in the Lands of Rest. But some live in the Wold, mainly in areas of nature."
"They can be as small as your thumb, or as big as a giant. Some can be either, since they can change shape. Or seem too, since many are good at illusions."
"The main weakness of fey is cold iron. Strengths - it depends on what type of fey it is. Most resist injury and some resist magic. Many have an affinity for an element, or for animals or plants. Of course, sometimes that's a weakness."
"They usually speak Sylvan. You're better off seeking out a druid, if you want to learn."
++++++
A suggestion is made to seek out the Magistrates in order to learn more of the house on Helm's Way. Edmund and Mira seem the most enthusiastic about it and they make plans to do so.
Shadow and Thar are ... well, more circumspect. Shadow mentions the entrances that he found but no one replies. Thar realizes that his church wouldn't help much, at least in this part of town. Conner and Kadaz don't say anything.
In the midst of this planning, a child comes to the door of the apartment and asks for "Edmund Greenleaf". When the wizard goes to the door, the messenger hands over a sealed letter and then stands there with her hand out. After Edmund opens the letter, he pales visibly. It seems a childhood "friend" is coming to Plateau City and will be paying a visit.
Edmund Wednesday March 14th, 2007 11:26:12 PM
Edmund reads the letter, and turns various shades of colour, from green, to grey, to a rather ghastly white. When he has finished, his mouth is hanging open and he is gaping at the letter, trying to say various things without much success.
This goes on for some time until he manages to regain his composure, cramming the letter into his waistcoat pocket. "G-good heavens!" he exclaims, dashing to his room and shutting the door behind himself.
A minute later, he emerges again, shouting to the other members of the order, "I am not in! I'm on vacation. Indefinitely! I'm not taking visitors! I'm dead! Recently! Recently deceased! Won't be back, tell anyone who comes I won't be back. Buried--no, cremated. Ashes spread at sea. Without a trace, no witnesses! Good heavens!"
With a slam, he disappears, hiding in his room. Knocks on the door are met with the shouted (and muffled) response of, "SOWWY! EEDMUNS DEAD DONTCHA KNOW!" in a highly exaggerated squeaky voice which, unfortunately, still sounds like Edmund.
Arm Thursday March 15th, 2007 5:47:53 AM
Arm looks to Shadow and says, "Scout if you like, but I'd advise caution against getting caught doing it, as that will surely ruin our chances at owning the residence.".
While he waits for those to set off for the magistrate, he notices Ed's reaction to the letter, then murmurs to Conner after he locks himself in his room, "Too bad no one thought of doing that earlier...". He then opens the door and tosses a gold coin to the messenger, if he is still there. To him, it was well worth it to elicit that kind of reaction from Ed.
Kadaz Thursday March 15th, 2007 7:48:26 AM
Kadaz willingly shares with Edmund all he learned about the fey from the sage. "I discovered that fey tend to speak sylvan. Does anyone here know that language? If so, I'd like to learn it."
Edmund's strange reactions raise many questions in Kadaz's mind. "So, do you think Edmund's visitor will be an old friend, or maybe a family member?"
As to Shadow's mention of secret entrances Kadaz is now ready to reply. "Yes, let's go exploring in that house. Maybe we can find some information that the guard missed."
Shadow Thursday March 15th, 2007 9:29:46 AM
"I guess I will wait to see if the magistrate will let us in. I would hate to lose the chance of getting the house. I am not sure I feel comfortable going with you to talk to the magistrate, so I will wait here for your return." Shadow says this because depending on which magistrate they talk to he might be recognized from his past, and not wanting to explain things he will wait in the apartment.
Thar ail Baerer Thursday March 15th, 2007 10:35:55 AM
Realizing that he doesn't have weapons that would be effective against fey, Thar will make a quick run to the Catacombs and see what the prices are for 2 cold iron short swords.
Mira Thursday March 15th, 2007 3:28:24 PM
"If we don't get anywhere with the magistrates, Shadow," volunteers Mira, "then lets do a little investigating. But, lets wait until it gets dark out, first."
Mira shrugs her shoulders at Edmund's strange reaction to news that a visitor would be calling on him. "I wonder if he owes money, or something?" she muses aloud, adding, "I guess the trip to the city offices will have to wait. We don't want Edmund facing...whoever it is...alone."
Conner Thursday March 15th, 2007 10:03:11 PM
"Don't worry about Edmund" Conner advises Mira. Let's go see the constables or the magistrate. Edmund can clean up his own affairs."
In the Apartment (DM JohnP) Thursday March 15th, 2007 11:09:26 PM
Everyone stands around, wondering about Edmund's reaction to the seemingly harmless letter. Perhaps the wizard has some deep dark secret in his past that he's desperate to hide? Who's to know? Well, actually, everyone might know once this mysterious visitor arrives.
Except for Edmund, who is moving furniture about in his room from the sounds of things, the Mithril Guard discusses how to go about learning more of the house on Helm's Way. 'Exploration', the term used by Shadow, would yield information but could be a real problem if they were caught doing it. Mira and several others suggest going to the magistrates, so that's what they do.
The sorcerer and those who wish to go with her head into the central part of the city, over in Merchant Quarter, to Constabulary Castle. After asking for directions, they find their way to the offices of the magistrate assinged to this case. The door is guarded by a small, wizened dwarf-woman who sits so stiffly behind her desk that she seems to have been carved from stone. If she ever smiled, it would probably be the first time. Mira bravely approaches the guardian, explaining what the party desires and mentioning the support of Sergeant Tomin. After finally putting down the stylus that she was using, the dwarf looks up at Mira.
"No. Magistrate Silverskin is too busy to see you. Not in this matter, not even with the word of a Guard Sergeant. Wait until the case is resolved and come back then."
The dwarf turns back to her work and ignores the party standing there. With that refusal, perhaps Shadow's idea is worthwhile. Thinking on that, the party returns to the apartment.
Edmund still hasn't left his room but has stopped moving things about. Was he barricading the door, or trying to clean in order to impress someone?
Shadow and Kadaz are discussing the best way to explore the house when there is a knock at the door.
Arm Friday March 16th, 2007 5:50:07 AM
Thoroughly disgusted with the treatment by the bureaucrat, Arm's mood is lightened by the knock on the door, "It will do my heart good to see Ed squirm for a bit..even if it means breaking his door down to allow his visitor entrance.". Smiling grimly, he answers the door.
Kadaz Friday March 16th, 2007 7:31:58 AM
Kadaz turns to the entrance to greet their visitor. Who could fighten Edmund so thoroughly? And if it's someone who has known Edmund for a while this could be a good source of information.
Shadow Friday March 16th, 2007 11:05:46 AM
Shadow stands, but waits where he is, since Kadaz seems to be answering the door. (not sure on time frame - if the group is back yet from seeing the magistrate)
Thar ail Baerer Friday March 16th, 2007 11:16:10 AM
(Assuming this all happens b/f the visitor arrives.) Thar, returning briefly from his visit to the catacombs, pulls aside Mira and Conner and asks "I haven't dealt with many fey, but I'm looking to buy a cold iron short sword. The price for a normal one is reasonable, but do you all recommend a +1 or just a standard non-magical one? The +1 is 2000 gp and I already have two +1's, but just need the cold iron as a back up. Do many of the fey that you've encoutered need magical weapons to hit them, or is cold iron sufficient?"
Kirsten Rislyn Friday March 16th, 2007 3:04:31 PM
After a long, frustrated day of attempting to find Edmund, Kirsten comes to what appears to be a boarding house of sorts. This, she finds rather perplexing, having been under the impression that Edmund had got himself a castle. A little confused she knocks at the door.
When someone answers, she speaks up, "Hello. I'm look for Edmund, the leader of the Mithril Order. I was under the impression from all of his letters that he had a castle of sorts nearby... well, I can't seem to find it. Everyone has been point me here, so perhaps you can point me in the right direction?"
She looks very, very confused.

The fighter nearly chokes at the description provided by the woman at the door. "No mistake there mum" Conner escorts her into the room. "Just wait right here and I'll see if 'His Majesty' is takin' visitors"
Conner takes the two or three quick steps towards Edmund's room and kicks hard just below the door handle, hoping to break down the door with a single blow.
"Open up Yer Highness!" he bellows through the door. "There's a lady here to see you."
Mira Friday March 16th, 2007 7:19:02 PM
Frustrated at having got nowhere with the magistrate, Mira bustles about the common room of the apartment setting up for tea. The human sorcerer sets a kettle to boil over the fireplace, and sets out the mis-matched and chipped cups from one of the corner cupboards.
"When we get a new place, we'll have to invest in some better dishes and such," she says. Returning to the cupboard, she fetches a bottle from the cupboard, takes out the cork and sniffs, drawing her head back quickly. "Whew!" Lifting it up, the green eyed woman makes eye contact with the dwarf, Kadaz, and the tatooed fighter, Conner, "'case you don't care for tea!"
******
As the tea steeps, Mira sets out a plate of plain bisquits. She straightens when there is a knock on the door, and the half-elf bard opens it. Mira eyes the stranger, then brings her hand up to cover her mouth, and hide her laughter, when Conner calls on the poor mage.
(Kirsten will notice a human woman of average height and build, the glint of light off little round eyeglasses, a tight shiny plait of dark hair to shoulder length. A simple tunic over plain leggings and boots. the only extravagance, a high leather belt with intricately carved design of entertwining dragons laced up the center to a point just under her bust, and a silver and green pendant hangning from a silver chain about her neck.)
Edmund d20+2=19 Friday March 16th, 2007 9:51:03 PM
As the door buckles and the hinge snaps, there is a shout--or rather a shriek--from within. With a crash, Edmund topples backwards from his position, where he was bracing himself against the door.
His voice quiet with meekness, he stumbles to his feet and peeks out of the door. "Oh? Not... really feeling up to visitors, dontcha know?" he says, squirming. "Tell her to come back later. I've gone all ill."
Edmund scrambles away from the door and tries to hide behind his large pile of furniture in the room, doing his best to stay out of sight. (Hide=19)
An Arrival (DM JohnP) Friday March 16th, 2007 10:57:03 PM
The knock on the door promised a very interesting meeting between Edmund and his visitor. When Arm opens the door, a woman stands there clad in armor. From all appearances, dressed very much like Kadaz when he's ready for a fight.
While everyone stands back to enjoy the meeting, Mira introduces herself to the newcomer. And Conner knocks, ever so gently, on the door to Edmund's room. Despite his best efforts, the wizard is not able to elude his companions. Finally, he is persuaded (dragged, actually) out to meet this Kirsten.
DM OOC - Everyone, please describe your characters in order to welcome our new player.
Edmund Saturday March 17th, 2007 12:02:44 AM
Dragged, not kicking and screaming, but certainly protesting, Edmund arrives in the room with Kirsten and the others. His arrival is not unannounced, of course, as it is preceded by shouts of increasing volume. "No, no, I don't want to go out! Let me go! I'm not well! I can't see visitors! Conner, put me down! Put me down, I say! I'm not meant to be carried about! No! No! I don't want to go! I don't want to go! Put me down!!!"
When Edmund is put down in front of Kirsten, it is to his immense and visible chagrin. He squirms visibly, and wrings his hands together in a most miserable fashion.
"Ah... what ho there, Kirsten. I see you've found my... ah.... temporary residence, whilst the castle is being... er, refitted."
Edmund hurries along before anyone can interrupt him.
"These are my, ah.... cabinet, advisors, ministers, and so on. As you can see, we're having a meeting. Dreadful boring stuff, taxation for the serfs, um... permits, liens, ordinances, bylaws... perhaps you could try coming back tomorrow? Or next month perhaps? Actually, quite busy, how about I send for you when I've some free time?"
Edmund hops from one foot to the other, continuing, with some words firmly pronounced to provide the other members of the order with clues which, he hopes, they will be encouraged to respond with.
"I'm certain Cas has told you about how I saved Plateau City from the ravaging wererats of wrath, and was voted Emperor and King for Life by the grateful people. But what he did not say was... ah... well, a recent development. Difficult to govern, so these, ah, ministers are here to help me divest myself of that authority. Not really interested in being King-Emperor, you see. Happy enough being Archmage-at-Large. Being a ruler is so dreadful dull. So I'm here to, ah, make plans to give up my post. And that's why no one seems to know me around here. I've passed a law making it a crime to recognise me, and the people are so grateful that they follow my orders to the letter, dontcha know. Quite simple really. Simple explanation."
Edmund makes a move to bolt from the room and finds himself blocked by the sturdy form of Conner behind him. He turns around sheepishly, looking for an escape route as he continues to wring his hands.
"Ah, so you'd best be off now, eh? Without a moment's delay. Very busy, work to do! See you again. Nice of you to drop in. Bye bye!"
Edmund (Description) Saturday March 17th, 2007 12:07:04 AM ((She knows it already, but here it is as a matter of form. ;D))
Edmund is a young male half-elf of fairly slight build. His eyes are bright, twinkling, and nearly constantly moving. He is almost always smiling, unless confronted by dire circumstances, and even then he can usually find the bright side of any situation.
Occasionally, however, he is plunged into a deep and foreboding gloom by circumstances which only the most complete reversal of fortunes can alleviate. His normal clothes are the green and brown travelling clothes he is virtually always seen wearing. Today, he is dressed in these clothes, which seem a bit roughed-up from the difficulty he has been experiencing moving furniture, and being dragged about.
Kadaz Saturday March 17th, 2007 8:34:29 AM
Kadaz watches with great interest as Edmund is dragged before this young woman and fumbles though the lamest explanation ever made. He sits in a corner and tries hard to stifle the laughter, not always successfully. He glances around at his friends, sharing the amusement and mentally capturing this picture for posterity. No doubt when Edmund replays this encounter in his mind the woman will be swooning in his arms.
After Edmund is done Kadaz stands up and moves over to the woman. "Let me offer a warmer welcome, miss. I am Kadaz Guardson. We are the Mithril Order, and Edmund is a member of it. But, as I'm sure you know, sometimes Edmund is a little over-enthusiastic in describing his role in actions. Sometimes he quite imaginative."
"Would you care to sit and visit for a while. Perhaps a bit of tea? Or something a bit stronger? I see that Mira is prepared."
Kadaz is a short, ugly dwarf. Since he's at home, he has taken off his normal armor and is wearing only chain mail, and is armed only with several kukris at his belt. His dwarven war axe, however, is leaning against the wall next to where he had been sitting. At is feet is a small dog with black curly hair. The dog is slowly moving towards the stranger, sniffing as he goes.
Kirsten Sunday March 18th, 2007 6:51:13 PM
Kirsten turns several shades of crimson and then pales as she realizes the truth of Edmund's exaggeration. In fact, she looks as though she might pounce on the wizard at any moment... that is, until she hears Kadaz.
Ah well, she should not have been surprised. It wasn't the first time Edmund had gotten a little... carried away.
Easily distracted, she turns her attention to Kadaz.
"Ah, some tea would be nice," she murmurs, and then louder. "My name's Kirsten Rislyn, a 'friend' of Edmund's. It is good to finally meet you all."
She eyes the wizard.
Mira Sunday March 18th, 2007 10:17:39 PM
There are benches flanking the sides of the large, rather beat up table. Mira waves a hand at one end, near the open hearthed fire.
Selecting a mug of robin's egg blue, she pours the woman a cup of the hot brew. Placing it in front of Kirsten, she then pushes the plate of bisquits forward. "Names Mira," volunteers the sorcerer. "Mira Silver. I grew up here inPlateau City, and formed up with the men of the Mithril Order a season or so before the Fey Troubles that came with Ebyron." The human female pushes her spectacles up higher on her nose, and eyes of emerald green examine the woman across from her. "Are you a mercenary or do you follow the path of the paladin?" she asks the stranger, before continuing, "and what brings you to Plateau City?" With a quick glance over her shoulder at the skinny wizard, Mira adds, "Edmund's not in any kind of trouble, is he?"
Thar ail Baerer Monday March 19th, 2007 9:46:02 AM
As the group meets with the new arrival, a young elf dressed in a woodsman outfit but wearing a large cross as his holy sumbol, enters the room. A bow is strapped on his back and twin short swords are in sheaths on his waste. He's average height but has a muscled frame and has bits of trees, twigs, leaves, etc. on his clothes, as if he's been hunting in the woods recently. He usually wears a smile and is often heard muttering prayers to himself, especially during battle.
Looking at the woman sitting in the room, he thinks to himself "Well, it looks like we have another visitor. I never know what's going to happen when I leave the apartment for a short while."
Going over to her and waiting for a break in the conversation, he introduces himself "Hello madam, I'm Thar ail Baerer and its my pleasure to meet you. I'm the resident healer and ranger in the group and if there is anything I can do to help you, please let me know. May I ask your name and to echo my companions question, what brings you here to our city?"
Shadow Monday March 19th, 2007 10:10:27 AM
A fairly short human (although there is something about him that speaks to him not being just human, but nothing apparent, yet) with very dark brown eyes and unkempt short jet black hair, approaches and says, "I am called Shadow." He offers his hand and if taken he has a firm grip, and then he moves away with a calculated and very smooth gait. He will lean against the wall and see what transpires. Like Kadaz, Shadow has to try very hard to restrain from laughing out loud. He wants to see what else happens with this new comer and Edmund.
Arm Monday March 19th, 2007 10:14:59 AM
Turning visibly purple, then bursting out in a fit of laughter at the mention of Ed being the "leader" of the order, much less a leader of anything, the tall half-elf backs away from the door and motions the newcomer inside with one hand, the other holding his stomach.
It takes him several minutes to calm down to the point of speaking, taking several gulping breaths in the meantime. Once he feels he can speak clearly, he addresses the newcomer, brushing a stray lock of near-white hair from his eyes, "I am sorry Madam, to have greeted you so improperly, but at the same time I must thank you for providing some much-needed levity. I am Armathen Ebano, but my friends call me Arm. As far as a leader goes, we really don't HAVE a leader. I've found that we in the Order try to assess everyone's opinion before making a decision, so you might say that we are ALL leaders. As far as a castle goes, well...it was once said that a man's home is his castle...we ARE currently in the process of looking for a new residence, however.".
At this point he falls silent as he sits down beside Mira. He puts an arm around her shoulder and hopes she is not displeased with his outburst as he awaits Kirsten's response.

Conner Monday March 19th, 2007 5:38:14 PM
Conner releases Edmund after physically removing him from his self-made gaol. He laughs heartily at Edmunds misfortune, and a row of straight white teeth flash from beneath the thick black moustache. The fighter knows he can be somewhat intimidating and he does his best to dispell that with their visitor.
Conner stands five feet 8 inches tall and weighs a solid 190 pounds. His frame is well muscled, the kind of muscle that develops from heavy physical labour, short, bulky muscles. Intense dark eyes glare out from beneath solid black eyebrows. A thick black moustache adorns his upper lip, extending down each side of his mouth into chops that curl under his square chin. His short black hair is clipped into a Mohawk, 1 inch in the front and tapering down to less than ¼ inch at the back. A large ornate tattoo stretches across the right side of his head, extending down his cheek and partly encircling his right eye. The tattoo has been subjected to a minor enchantment that causes it to darken and intensify whenever he is angered or excited. It is currently a deep crimson hue. Two thick gold earrings fit through the piercings in his right ear.
"Welcome to our home, such as it is." he welcomes Edmund's friend. "I am Conner Baelson and I hail from the second Plateau where my family kept vinyards on behalf of Plateau City's nobles" "Don't know what Edmund here has told you 'bout us, but the locals here seem to think highly of us for the most part."
Old Acquaintances (DM JohnP) Monday March 19th, 2007 10:47:59 PM
Kirsten introduces herself to the group, and they to her. Everyone is waiting with bated breath for Edmund's arrival from his room and when he does show up, it's worth it. Still, it's unexplained exactly why Kirsten came looking for the wizard, or how long she will be staying in Plateau City.
The armored woman sips at the tea provided by Mira in the uncomfortable silence following Edmund's attempt to shoo Kirsten away. It's one of those dreadful pauses in conversation when no one really wants to say something. Maybe Kirsten will elaborate on her plans, or someone could relate the tales of Edmund's triumph over the hordes of undead? Or maybe they'll just fall back on planning how to investigate the house on Helm's Way.

Still waiting expectantly for Kirsten's response to the questions posed to her, Arm takes a sidelong glance at Mira as if to say, "What do you make of her?".
Thar ail Baerer Tuesday March 20th, 2007 9:16:35 AM
Thar will sit on the nearest couch and with a smile, waits to hear about Edmund destroying vast multitudes of enemy soldiers or defeating armies. While sitting, he continues observing Kirsten and tries to get a better feel of who she is and why she has visited them.
Shadow Tuesday March 20th, 2007 9:25:30 AM
Shadow waits to see what is to be revealed by the sudden appearance of this 'friend' of Edmund. He almost asks, Edmund, where is this so called castle, but he resists the urge. This should be interesting to say the least, Shadow thinks.
ADM Scott Tuesday March 20th, 2007 9:26:23 AM
OOC: I did miss the post on Wednesday (so it should have been 3 posts), the one on last Sunday would have counted for last week (the week goes Monday-Sunday). Sorry about that.
Conner Tuesday March 20th, 2007 11:51:47 AM
Conner agrees that it is time to have Shadow do some digging about he building on Helm's Way. "Perhaps the guild knows something of what went on there" he suggests to the rogue.
Kadaz Tuesday March 20th, 2007 4:46:25 PM
Kadaz looks from Kristen over to Edmund, still looking for a way to get around Conner, and then back to the newcomer. "Well, Kristen, welcome to Plateau City. Did you travel far to get here? Any interesting encounters on the way?" Kadaz is trying to make small talk but will soon run out of items more interesting than how to polish armor.
Mira Tuesday March 20th, 2007 5:52:01 PM
Mira waits for Kirsten...and Edmund, to fill in the gaps.
The woman gives Conner's leg a kick under the table, and lifting a finger to her lips, she gives the a fighter a 'look'. Leaning against the bard's arm, she whispers into Arm's ear "...the woman could be a paladin...or a bounty hunter, come to fetch an escaping debtor, or such. Might not look favourably on our little plan to explore the vacant building. Best keep our plans to ourselves for now."
The sorcerer studies the woman across the table, waiting for her to provide a little more information about her plans for Plateau City, and Edmund.
Kirsten Tuesday March 20th, 2007 6:17:52 PM
The woman peers down at her cup of tea, and then looks around at the others. At Mira's asking her if she is a mercenary, Kirsten smiles vaguely and shakes her head.
"Afraid I'm just a lowly paladin," her smile is warm, but subdued. "I came here on Caspian's urging, mostly to check up on Edmund. You see, we've been getting such strange letters from him recently that we wanted to make sure he is staying out of trouble."
She takes a sip of the tea, "Seems he is in one piece, anyway."
Kirsten tries to answer all of their questions to the best of her abilities. Explaining that, for the most part, her journey there had been rather uneventful. From the looks of things, she doesn't seem to know how long she will stay... or what she intends to do now that she's managed to track down Edmund.
Edmund Tuesday March 20th, 2007 9:37:13 PM
"What do you mean about my letters?" Edmund inquires cautiously. "Everything in them has been entirely above-board! Well, mostly, at least. The general thrust is more or less somewhat accurate, in a way, relatively speaking."
Edmund nods to the rest of the group before carrying on. "I suppose an introduction is in order, more or less, in proper form and all. This is Kirsten Rislyn, a friend of mine from my childhood. We used to... play... together when we were younger. Though, what I remember most, is being beaten with sticks under the guise of 'martial training'. I learned to hide in trees well enough as a result, though."
After this explanation, Edmund shrugs and says, with a plaintive look on his face, "I suppose it would only be decent to ask you to stay for a while after your trip. As we're in the process of... ahh... 'repairing the castle', if you follow. There's a couple we're looking at, but I suspect room can be found here in the interim, if you like."
Turning to the others, Edmund adds, "And a Paladin will doubtless be of great assistance in our efforts, yes?"
A Tea Party (DM JohnP) Tuesday March 20th, 2007 10:49:29 PM
Well, there could have been more fireworks, couldn't there? Kirsten has revealed that Edmund's ... elaborations on the truth ... happen when he is writing, not just speaking. Still, the paladin probably has all sorts of embarrassing stories about Edmund when he was younger.
After that, everyone sits around sipping tea and wondering what to talk about next. The weather has been pretty decent lately, at least for late winter or early spring, so that won't do as a topic. And even though Kirsten is a fighting type, she's a paladin and ... well, a she ... so she may not really want to discuss the latest issue of Swords and Armor. A brief conversation isn't enough time to learn exactly how rigid Kirsten is about matters of law and order, so nothing has been said about the house on Helm's Way. Still, some members of the Mithril Order have worked with a paladin before.
It's getting on in the day and the first folk returning to their homes can be heard outside. Either someone has to make supper and invite Kirsten, or everyone goes out someplace. Perhaps Sampson's would be a good choice - close, friendly, and the staff know most everyone but neither so up-market nor down-market that a paladin would be out of place. Still, someone has to make the first move.
Mira Tuesday March 20th, 2007 11:07:04 PM
The sorcerer stiffens when the newcomer confirms her suspicions that she is an upholder of the law, and yet...paladins were also compelled to persue good, and in her experience anyway, had always shown...compassion.
"Ah...we do have a spare bed, Kirsten Rislyn." Then, smiling as she warms to the idea of another woman in the house, "and staying here will allow you to keep an eye on your friend, and keep him out of scrapes."
Noticing the advancing of the day, Mira suggests the party head over to Sampson's for dinner.
Conner Tuesday March 20th, 2007 11:17:35 PM
The fighter's tatoo darkens, reflecting his lack of appreciation at being kicked under the table.
At the mention of the tavern, he gets up, and prepares to leave. "Maybe later we can check out the 'castle'," he says in a gruff voice. Passing by Shadow, he lowers his voice so that only the rogue can here, Highlight to display spoiler: {"Helm's Way, after. I'll have your back."}
Trying to catch the dwarf's eye, he nods towards the door. Conner will fall back behind the resk of the party, encouragind Kadaz and Shadow to do the same. "I say we check out this abandoned place. Maybe the others want to come, maybe not?" He raises an eyebrow, and waits for his companions to voice their opinions.
Arm Wednesday March 21st, 2007 5:59:38 AM
Arm nods surrupticiously at Mira's comment, then adds in an equally low whisper, "You keep her occupied at Samson's while I go with the rest to check out the new place...hopefully we won't be long.". He then rises and follows the rest out the door.
While on the way, Arm thinks back to the problems that he at least had with Uriel..even though he was kind and compassionate, his xealot-like beliefs often got in the way of things that needed to be done that were not always 'above board'. "Well," he thinks, "I guess we'll just see if she'll be more of a hindrance than a help. The one bright spot is that she can hopefully at least provide quite amusing stories about our bumbling wizard.".
Kadaz Wednesday March 21st, 2007 7:42:38 AM
Kadaz drops back to confer with Conner. "Yes, let's look into things there now. Count me in."
Shadow d20+7=9 d20+2=16 d20+10=22 d20+2=17 d20+15=23 Wednesday March 21st, 2007 9:31:51 AM
Shadow takes the hint about the idea of scouting the house and nods. "Why don't you all have dinner first with our new friend here, and I will check in on some 'friends' of mine about it. Then we can meet there, say in an hours time. Mira can then get, Kirsten it is right, comfortable in the apartment." He says and hoping to get confirmation nods from the group.
Once the group leaves he will go to his room and get his 'work' clothes on with all of his gear. He will then head over to the 'Guild' and see what the Daymaster and Nightmaster have to say about the location on Helm's way. He does not remember seeing any of the 'Guild's' signs on the building.
Once at the house, he will check the area for any thing unusual (people hanging around, lights that should not be there, anything else). If it looks like the area is deserted, Shadow will check out one of the hidden entrances.

Thar ail Baerer Wednesday March 21st, 2007 9:31:54 AM
Once he finds out she is a Paladin and after things calm down, Thar will try to engage her in conversation about her faith, as well as sharing his own.
In response to Conner and Mira's suggestion, he says "I'll keep Kirsten company at Sampson's while you guys check out more places. I don't get that many chances to discuss theology with new people and am looking forward to it."
Kirsten Wednesday March 21st, 2007 7:03:56 PM
She perks up subtly when Thar suggests the discussion of theology. The paladin having begun to feel slightly out of place with the group of stranger. Kirsten is more than up for a talk about faith.
"I would hate to be a hindrance to all of you, so please, go about your business and I shall try to stay out of the way."
Edmund Wednesday March 21st, 2007 8:02:29 PM
"Well..." Edmund says, before turning and heading back to his room.
When he returns, he brandishes the forms from earlier. "Ready to do something about these? Found somewhere worth acquiring? I'm still ready, dontcha know."
Edmund eyes Kirsten occasionally, and is careful not to stand too close. He's still not entirely certain that the whole thing won't lead to him being beaten with sticks, and with him then having to find a tree to hide in.
Then he remembers his Rod, and feels a little better.
"Yes, ready when you are!" he says again.
Supper and a Walk (DM JohnP) Wednesday March 21st, 2007 10:35:20 PM
Mira invites the newcomer Kirsten and whoever else is interested to join her at Sampson's for a meal. Thar and Edmund join the sorcerer and the paladin as they walk to the neighbourhood tavern. The others lag behind, begging other pressing business.
Entering Sampson's is like stepping into a comfortable second home for Mira. Even Thar and Edmund are starting to like this place. A server greets them after they entered and directs them to a table. After offering what the kitchen has made, the man takes their orders for beverages and lets them settle themselves. A lively discussion of theology follows, where Thar and Kirsten find that they have much in common even though they worship different deities.
+++++++
Meanwhile, in another part of Trade Quarter, the others are walking past the Temple of Caeroldra. There is a steady stream of people in and out of the temple at this time of evening but the park isn't too busy yet. No one pays too much mind when Conner, Kadaz, and Arm follow Shadow into the park and to an alcove on the rear of the building on Helm's Way.
After locating the secret door again, Shadow fiddles with some tools until he hears a "click" and a section of wall moves outward slightly. After ensuring that they are unobserved, the rogue pushes the section of wall until a space little more than a foot wide is exposed. He slides into the darkness, motioning to the others to follow.
Once inside, they find themselves in a dark space. Kadaz, with his dwarven vision, can still see clearly but the others are effectively blind. The dwarf could lead them about or they could make some light.
Conner Wednesday March 21st, 2007 11:29:17 PM
Conner locates a sunrod amongst his gear. "Good job, Shadow, now push ahead, Kadaz, and tell us what ye see. If it looks safe, I'll get this here rod going."
Conner peers into the darkness, unable to see anything. If the dwarven fighter tells him the coast is clear, he will strike the rod upon the ground, activating its magic.
Sunrod-glows brightly illuminating a 30 ft. radius, shadowy illumication 60 ft. radius, 6 hours.
Edmund Wednesday March 21st, 2007 11:38:22 PM
Edmund's conversation is limited by the presence of tea and a pork pie of respectable size, which he occupies himself with whilst Thar and Kirsten discuss Theology.
Though temporarily taciturn, it is obvious to the others after Edmund's few comments that, however strong his religious devotion to Pantheon, Edmund considers the state to be at least as important as the church--and it is entirely probable that if he knew what was going on in the house on Helm's Way, he'd have a lot more to say about it.
He doesn't, though, so he crams pork pie into his face as if he has been starving for a month, helped down by prodigous quantities of hot tea. "Can't have religion without law and order!" he says repeatedly, either to the others or himself. "Bloody chaos, that's what you'd get. Bloody chaos!"
Soon enough, the pie is gone (though there's plenty of tea left), and Edmund looks around. He finally notices that some of the other members of the Order are missing.
"Where's everyone else?" he enquires curiously, looking to Mira. "Pie's excellent. They're missing out!"
Mira d20+9=29 Wednesday March 21st, 2007 11:50:14 PM
Mira wishes she was with the guys, snooping around the locked up apartment building that just might, possibly, be the party's future digs.
"Put the documents away, for now," she counsels Edmund, "No offices are open this late in the day." Taking the skinny mage's hand in her own, she begs him to come to Sampson's (Diplomacy=29, nat. 20!).
Over a shared bottle of Asildurian red, Mira will provide a little background information on the Mithril Order, passing quickly over the party's early struggles as they tried to establish themselves, and elaborating more on their recent and far more successful ventures. She will explain how shortly after Edmund joined up, they embarked on a dramatic adventure with another adventuring group, the Crimson Shields, which netted the group some not insignificant wealth.
"So you see, Kirsten, Edmund has brought us good luck!"
Mira will explain how the party is looking to acquire a home of our own, the apartment being only a rental. With a wave of her hand towards the door of the tavern, she continues, "our missing friends have gone off to check out a property." Then, with a gleam in her eye, Mira als the paladin, "what do you know of those who serve the goddess Caeroldra?"
Arm d20+13=33 d20+4=6 Thursday March 22nd, 2007 5:47:59 AM
Arm does his best to carefully scan the area while the others orient themselves before moving on (listen=33-nat. 20, spot=6).
OOC: So does this mean that Arm's night vision-60ft- is innefective?
ed. DM JohnP - The space behind the hidden door is pitch black and the small amount of light coming through the narrow door is not enough to illuminate the space, even for those with elven low-light vision.
Shadow d20+2=21 Thursday March 22nd, 2007 9:35:00 AM
Shadow will wait in silence trying to determine if there are any sounds, other than his companions. Once the coast is determined to be clear and just before the sunrod is activated, Shadow will close the door behind them.

Thar ail Baerer Thursday March 22nd, 2007 1:21:51 PM
Thar, glad that he is finally becoming comfortable in one place, enjoys the positive attention they receive from the server.
Seeing that Edmund also has some thoughts on theology and how it relates to the state, Thar invites Edmund and Mira into the conversation. Musing to himself, he is glad that the group is making their new member feel welcome and having another type that can heal and turn undead will be a definite plus. In addition, another swordsman will be a big advantage over their future foes.
Responding to Edmund's query, Thar adds "Ed, I think that the rest of the group had some errands to run and things to check out. I'm sure they'll fill us in when they get back. Oh, while I'm thinking about it, could you tell me more about when we fought those mummys in that cave and your dominant part in saving our hides? (he says with a grin)"
To Mira, he says with interest "I didn't know you had such an interest in theology and are you one who worships Caeroldra?"

Kadaz d20+1=8 Thursday March 22nd, 2007 4:04:23 PM
Kadaz steps head of Shadow to take a look down the dark hall. He describes what he see to the others in a low voice. He tries to look carefully at what is ahead of them but this really isn't what he's good at. (spot 8)
Kirsten Thursday March 22nd, 2007 6:14:21 PM
Kirsten seems very relieved to have a nice hot meal, having been travelling a great deal. It takes her a bit, but she soon starts to warm up to the others as they chat. The paladin seeming a great deal concerned with the idea of justice and protection of others.
At Mira's question, she murmurs, "Caeroldra, is the goddess of passion, yes?" She looks thoughtful, "Though I don't necessarily agree with all she stands for, I can see why one would want to follow such a god. A very appealing idea."
Mira (2nd illegal post) Thursday March 22nd, 2007 7:01:11 PM
The sorcerer starts, "Caeroldra? No! Not me!" she answers quickly in response to Thar's question.
Mira wonders what Thar knows of her past actions, or relationships, and feels a little nervous under the scrutiny of the cleric and the paladin. "No," she continues, "not me. I believe in love...or the possibilities of love, anyway...not just the flame of passion." Mira reddens a little, and fans her face with a hand, "...anyway, I don't really worship any diety, specifically. Don't see how they factor into things..." How to explain that her talent is inborn, and honed through personal effort? No books, no mentors, no theories, just raw power...not from any gods...but from somewhere inside herself. Gods, well, Mira doesn't really understand them. And their gifts or...blessings...are for other folks.
Mira pours herself another glass of wine.
In the Dark (DM JohnP) Thursday March 22nd, 2007 10:52:07 PM
Mira keeps Edmund, Thar and Kirsten occupied with a discussion of theology, government and the rules of civil society. Edmund is somewhat disappointed that his new friends are missing out on this conversation, not to mention the delicious meat pie that Sampson's kitchen has prepared. Thar and Kirsten are enjoying the conversation, too.
++++++
Over in the house on Helm's Way, the other four crowd into the dark and narrow space beyond the hidden door before Shadow slides the door shut, shutting out any light from the City. Kadaz has a chance to look around before Conner strikes a sunrod to illuminate the space.
Along with Arm, they are crowded into a narrow space between the interior and exterior walls of the house. Off to to one side is a narrow staircase leading up to what is probably the first floor of the house, before continuing up. In the other direction, another narrow staircase leads down to the basement level.
When Shadow and Arm look up to the landing, they see the back of another hidden door. Presumably, this was a secret entrance to the house that would allow visitors to come and go without being seen from the street.
The question is, how much exploration will the four do tonight?
Conner Thursday March 22nd, 2007 11:15:31 PM
The fighter presses against the wall, holding the sunrod aloft. Pointing to the door on the landing above, he nods to the rogue, "check for traps and such. We'll be right behind."
Mira Thursday March 22nd, 2007 11:22:40 PM
A little too much wine, the close air of the tavern, and having to guard her words, takes a toll on the sorcerer. "I am starting to get a head-ache," she announces. Rising from the table, she adds, "a little fresh air would do some good."
Collecting her large, heavy cloak, she suggests, "why don't we all take a walk over to Helm's Way. I'll show you the place we found. It's smallish apartments now, but has potential to convert into a nice place...I think."
Arm d20+13=25 d20+4=15 Friday March 23rd, 2007 5:44:32 AM
Arm nods in agreement to Conner's assessment, drawing his sword as quietly as he can, and continuing to scan for trouble (listen=25, spot=15).
Shadow d20+15=22 d20+10=29 d20+10=30 d20+2=19 Friday March 23rd, 2007 12:00:53 PM
Although Shadow's first instinct was to go down, Conner suggests up, so Shadow heads up the stairs and searches for anything along the way. If there are no traps or anything of concern he will open the door up.
Kadaz d20+1=3 Friday March 23rd, 2007 3:57:01 PM
Kadaz drops back to let Shadow go first. "Take care" he whsipers. Kadaz turns around to watch the way they came from. (spot 3)
Kirsten Friday March 23rd, 2007 8:37:06 PM
The paladin peers at Mira, though she nods her head subtly in consent. She seems to relatively up for whatever they might have her do, more out of curiousity than anything else.
Edmund Friday March 23rd, 2007 10:30:42 PM
"Isn't it getting to be a bit late to be poking around houses on Helm's Way?" Edmund asks irritably. "Besides, there's another pot of tea on the way! And we're having a great discussion about the philosophy of religion and the state!"
Edmund will protest, but if Mira insists, will come along, grumbling a bit perhaps, but nevertheless, he will leave. Otherwise, if he is successful in persuading her to stay, he'll buy her a drink of her choice in gratitude, and carry on his discussion with Thar and Kirsten.
Helm's Way (DM JohnP) Friday March 23rd, 2007 11:14:28 PM
Mira suggests going for a walk to view the house on Helm's Way that the party is interested in acquiring. Kirsten is interested but Edmund would far rather stay and keep drinking tea.
++++++
In the house on Helm's Way, Shadow goes up and examines the door. The others are alert for danger but nothing seems to threaten them. After studying the door, Shadow is convinced that it is safe to go through. He flips the catch and gently pushes the door open. Everyone looks out into a corridor in the light cast by Conner's sunrod. Enough light is coming through the windows from the street to light things enough for Arm and Shadow to see clearly.
The door is at the end of a corridor, cunningly set so that the trim and wallpaper conceal the door. Nothing is moving in the house as the four pad about, examining things.
As they had observed from outside, and heard through some gossip, the house has far too many bedrooms. Most of the rooms are in disarray - drawers open, bedding on the floor and forgotten clothing left behind. If he had to guess, Shadow thinks a combination of hasty packing and subsequent searching.
They do find a couple lounges, a kitchen and a strange room in the basement that contains what Conner first thought was exercise equipment. That room might be converted to a practice room, or used for holding prisoners. As they prowl about, Shadow notices three other hidden doors - two above where they entered and another near the kitchen. Kadaz notices some sections of the stone walls in the basement that seem "off".
Finally, the four conclude that this place has more than enough room for them. Of course, some renovations would be needed. And there's the problem of all the secret entrances and exits. Not bad if you expect to need to exit in a hurry or unobserved, but it does make them wonder who else knows about them.
During this quick survey, the four see nothing that would provide any clues for the Guard and Constables.
Kadaz Saturday March 24th, 2007 5:21:02 AM
Kadaz warns the others of what he has noticed. "Hey guys, the stonework in the cellar is not quite right. There may be something hidden down here."
Thar ail Baerer Sunday March 25th, 2007 2:01:04 PM
Agreeing w/ Mira's plan, Thar says "I think a walk is a great idea and I don't like spending too much time indoors anyway. I'd like to get a better look at our new potential home and didn't get to spend too much time looking at it originally."
He'll wander with the group towards the house on Helm's way.
Mira Sunday March 25th, 2007 6:43:47 PM
Mira will lead the way to Helm's Way after casting a simple Light spell on the owl carved at the tip of the (non-magic) walking staff gifted to her by Xenia (during a Winter Solstice Party at the Giggling Ghost). She will go down the streets and to the front of building, not the back via the park that edges the temple of Caeroldra.
"If we can secure the place, it would need some fixing up. If you'd like to stay with us for a while, Kirsten, you'd be welcome to stay if you're willing to put some work in. That is, if the city lets us take it over." Mira smiles at the wizard, "with Edmund's help with the paperwork, I'm sure it will be ours shortly."
Mira looks at the outside of the place, scanning the windows, and such. I wonder how Arm and the rest are doing inside, she ponders.
Edmund Sunday March 25th, 2007 10:40:17 PM
Grumbling all the way, Edmund tags along with Mira, Thar, and Kirsten as they approach the house on Helm's Way. Once they get there, Edmund gives it the most cursory of inspections, barely glancing at it before saying, "Lovely. It looks lovely."
When Mira suggest that Kirsten stay for a while, Edmund stomps his feet and turns around. "Ready to go yet? It's cold!"
Arm Monday March 26th, 2007 5:45:47 AM
Casting a final look around, Arm says, "Well, I think it best we return in the morning to check out the wall, as I'm sure the rest will be wondering what's been keeping us." As an afterthought, he adds, "If we DO take up residence here, we'll have to make a thorough search of the place to identify all of the hidden entrances and devise a means of blocking them to all but ourselves. Perhaps I can work up something with Mira along the lines of a permanent hold portal spell with password protection." If the group agrees and heads out, he turns his thoughts to that task, as its not something he'd let fall into Ed's hands, "Probably he would cause them all to swing wildly open and closed constantly," he muses to himself.
Conner Monday March 26th, 2007 7:40:36 AM
"Better take a look at that wall while we're here" suggests the fighter. "If Kadaz doesn't think it looks right, that's good enough for me." Conner will provide back-up for the fighter should anything nasty be encountered.
Shadow d20+2=21 d20+10=16 Monday March 26th, 2007 11:30:05 AM
"I agree, lets take a look at this 'wall' before we leave." Shadow agrees. He will move down and see if there is anything 'funny' about the wall.

"I will be as much help as I can, especially since I would be very interested in staying... at least for a little while."
As she speaks, her eyes shift towards Edmund, peering at him quietly.
More House Exploring (DM JohnP) Monday March 26th, 2007 10:36:05 PM
Inside the house, the four head down into the basement where Kadaz felt a wall wasn't sitting correctly. When he gets close to the corner of the basement, Kadaz leads Shadow over and points out the joints in the mortar that drew his attention. After some poking and prodding, Shadow concludes that there is another secret door here. But he can't figure out the mechanism that would open the door.
After Conner, Arm and the others poke around some more, they feel that they've found everything possible in the basement. Now it's simply a matter of getting out of the house without being spotted. The secret door at the rear of the house is as they left it. When Shadow listens at the door, he doesn't hear any sounds of movement or activity outside. Opening the door just enough to peek out shows nothing, either.
After slipping through, the four are able to make their way back to the apartment. Or Sampson's, or wherever.

Mira suggests walking to see the building on Helm's Way. Thar is enthusiastic to get some exercise and Kirsten is willing to go along. Edmund is the only one who grumbles, but not too seriously.
It's a pretty pleasant evening for a stroll in Plateau City. Crossing Trade Quarter to Helm's Way isn't too difficult although they do have to persuade Edmund to keep going after they pass the turn to the apartment.
From the outside, the house on Helm's Way doesn't look exceptional. Maybe a bit nicer than the houses to either side, but not extremely so. This street is a mix of large single dwellings and places like this, either built as or converted into apartments. And certainly no moving lights or other signs of prowlers inside.
Helm's Way is busy enough that the four people standing in the street don't draw any attention. However, from the sounds of things, Edmund is in a hurry to get another pot of tea. Or something, so it's time to head back.
Mira Monday March 26th, 2007 11:08:47 PM
"Well, tomorrow's another day. Best get some shut-eye."
Mira leads the way back to the apartment. She locates some spare linens, and a rough, but servicable blanket. Thrusting the lot into Edmund's arms, she tells the wizard, "make our guest comfortable, will you?" With a " 'night, Kirsten," to the paladin, Mira heads to the room she shares with Arm. The sorcerer sits up reading scrolls by the light of her spell. When Arm arrives, she asks him to tell her all about the scouting mission.
Edmund Tuesday March 27th, 2007 1:51:16 AM
Edmund staggers as he is given the lot of bedclothes for Kirsten, screwing up his face a bit. "Ah, great, fantastic." he says. "I suppose she can sleep in one of the other little rooms."
Turning to Kirsten, he gestures to a room which is actually not all that small. "Is here good enough for you?" he asks. "It is not made of solid gold or anything, but it is pretty comfortable! And there's tea to be had, and baths"
After seeing Kirsten to her room, Edmund retires for the evening and goes directly to sleep. His dreams are troubled, however, by visions of being beaten with rods and chased up trees by aggressive women in armour.
If Edmund were a dwarf, this might well qualify as a first-rate dream, but as he is not, it is merely terrifying instead. Nothing that a little tea can't fix. He hopes.
Kadaz Tuesday March 27th, 2007 3:21:54 AM
Kadaz is a bit disappointed that Shadow can't figure out how to open the secret door that must be in this wall. He's sure he could get through this wall in a few minutes by using his axe, but that wouldn't be very quiet.
"Time to give up folks. Let's head back home," he advises the others. "But I do like the looks of this place."
(OOC: I am out of town until Thursday morning. I will miss the next post. Sorry.)
Arm Tuesday March 27th, 2007 6:03:05 AM
Grateful to be out of the house before the 'goody-goody paladin' shows up, Arm gratefully retires to his and Mira's room, where he relates their findings. He adds, "I was thinking about some type of spell to lock up all those hidden entrances except to ourselves...if you'd like, I can help you with it.".
Thar ail Baerer Tuesday March 27th, 2007 12:53:07 PM
Thar enjoys walking in the outdoors, and after returning to the apartment, looks forward to hearing the report of Arm, Shadow, Kadaza and Conner.
He takes some time to relax and trying to plan ahead, says to Edmund and Mira "Well, since we like the place, what's the next step in buying it? What about financing for it? How much do these places cost and what sort of monthly variable costs are we going to face?"
Shadow Tuesday March 27th, 2007 5:00:53 PM
"Unless we get more information about the house, I have no idea what we are going to do about it. If people want I can take another look at that door tomorrow night, but it will take some time." He looks around at his companions to see what they think.
Conner Tuesday March 27th, 2007 5:54:54 PM
"I like what I see" Conner smiles in appreciation of the buildings finer points. "It might be nice to have a secret escape route to avoid nosey neighbours from time to time. We could always take down a few interior walls to make some of the rooms larger...seems to have plenty enough for all of us."
Kirsten Tuesday March 27th, 2007 8:06:13 PM
She retires to bed once Edmund leads her there, and quietly thanks the wizard for his help.
Before bed, the paladin spends some time in prayer and then cares for her armour and weapon.
