Dirt City At Last [SteveK]
Wednesday April 4th, 2007 7:28:22 PM

BOAT
With the combined curiosity and determination (taking 20, great idea!), the Dirt City Heroes are able to make several discoveries.
1- There is a Secret Door in the aft section of the keelboat that, once a certain panel is pushed, opens a 5x5 door to the last five feet of the boat. This space is 5 feet wide and 15 feet across.
2- The leak from the giant sea animal was in this room, and why the water was coming in the side but under the door.
3- The keel is exposed in this area, and clearly shows strange glyphs and markings. Magicians using Detect Magic can clearly see that the magical nature of the boat emanates from the keel; it is a moderate alteration.
4-It is going to take a lot of study to fully comprehend and use the magic of the keel (even with magical aids), but Theodore initially believes that with proper command words, the boat can alter its shape!

DOCK
It takes an hour to properly tie up the keelboat, meet the dockmaster and agree on a docking fee. The old halfling measures you carefully. "No cargo? Yer from Dirt City but this be a new boat? No House affiliation, eh? One gold a day for tie up."

There are still the chests in the boat unopened, the Pirate's chest, and the boat itself to consider as treasure.

The three young men are perfectly happy to stay with the group until they are able to get to the City Below. And Olyn gives them a fine excuse. "I'm going to the Temple and can go by way of the tunnels." The half-elf hops off the boat to the dock and then turns around. He looks at the companions and seems at a loss for words. Closing his eyes for a moment, they open once more and the quiet cleric manages a half-smile. "Sorry if I haven't been myself," he tells the others on the boat, "but I've got a lot to work through. I'm going to Wardd's Temple, and I'll be there for a while. Luck with you."
And with that, Olyn turns and walks away.
The young men follow.

Vorelle looks around and calls a name, but she doesn't have far to go. On the dock and coming towards you is Champ, pacing beside a black elf...

Umbriel Highlight to display spoiler: { Umbirel managed to track down the dog-companion of Vorelle, the ranger. It makes sense that when the ranger comes back to the city, the dog will find her, and hence the others as well... }

Theodore & Macaw
Wednesday April 4th, 2007 8:26:37 PM

Theodore informs the others of his discovery. "We should not sell this boat until we determine exactly what it's capable of. We might even decide to keep it." He shrugs.

"Of course, my vote is to keep it," he grins. "I'd like to go home, first. I haven't had a chance to clean up in weeks!"

Vauhwyt and Mookie  d20+11=13 d20+11=31
Wednesday April 4th, 2007 10:44:13 PM

Vauhwyt is fascinated by what Theo says, and listens intently.

"Please Theo, explain it again," she says.

Then she has a bit of insight, or thinks she does. "You mean if I say this and poke here ..."

"Boss? Boss!" Mookie ducks for cover!

Use Magic Device check to blindly activate the boat -- a 13! That's no good!

Vauhwyt shudders as the magic energies warp out of control. She tries heroicly to get it right ...

Use Hero Point for the reroll ...

a 31! Nat 20! Woo hoo! Yay! It works!

Vauhwyt laughs with delight as she successfully activates the boat!

"Jeezum Crow, Boss," caws Mookie, voice quavering. "I thought you almost lost it there!"

"Ha ha!" Vauhwyt laughs. "I almost did!"

Vorelle
Thursday April 5th, 2007 12:21:19 AM

Vorelle hesitates, seeing Champ with a stranger. Perhaps he's found a new friend. She certainly couldn't blame him--she'd been gone for weeks.

"Ch-Champ?" she says tentatively.

Oni  d20+12=18
Thursday April 5th, 2007 12:55:43 AM

Oni listens to Theo ands Vauhwyt talk about the boat being magic. Of course it was. But Theo is describing that it has more magic than what it appears to be. Good, maybe it will help the group in the future.

Addressing Rose, "Rose, you seem skilled in finding traps and opening things. Would you open the 2 chests that were here on the boat when we arrived. If there are valuables in them, it would be smart to sell all the items at one time. What do you think?"

Olyn makes his departure with the Dirt City youths. He was a quiet man, probably takes his religion seriously. When he says goodbye, if Oni wasn't mistaken, there was a finality to it.

Oni hears Vorelle utter Champ's name. That doesnt sound like a happy greeting. Turning he sees the black elf.....

Hairs on the back of his neck rise. Fists clench. Eyebrows furrow. Blood rises, his skin tingles with the sensation. There is the enemy. Was the enemy. Is the enemy? It takes all the will power he has to not draw his axe.

All thoughts of treasure, friends, water, boats are gone. Only the black one has his attention.

{DM could you give me a description of the 'black' elf? This could get ugly}

Umbriel
Thursday April 5th, 2007 1:46:29 AM

Kneeling next to the canine, I scratch the creature behind his ear. Saying something into his ear I point to the girl calling his name.

DM Highlight to display spoiler: { there is your companion my friend. go and give her a proper greeting. }

Standing back up as the dog moves to his master I step into better light.

Before you is an obvious Dark Elf.
Long blonde hair tied into a ponytail to the middle of his back with a silky midnight bluish skin tone. Wearing clothing including a hooded cloak without the hood up and sporting a light crossbow strapped to his back and a rapier on his hip. All peace bonded. And upon his face is a pair of smokey colored sunglasses. Making seeing his eyes virtually impossible.

You do notice he stands there with a hint of arrogant confidence.

Oni {Second post}
Thursday April 5th, 2007 3:04:38 AM

Oni, a centaur by birth stands 7 feet tall, large body going about 1500 lbs.

Like Umbriel he has the dark skin. His is of a charcoal gray. Long white hair on his head, small beard and mustache, stark white as well. 2 back legs have white fur going up over half the leg. Stark white tail switching nervously in the wind.

If he were not centaur, he would surely be Drow.

Across his back is a bow, quiver and pack. On the opposite shoulder, a double bladed axe is sheathed.

Dietrich  d20+4=19 d20+7=13
Thursday April 5th, 2007 9:35:47 AM

The knight is happy that the party discovered more about the boat. It surely is a great treasure. He understands Theo´s wish to keep the boat, but the party will decide about this later.

Dietrich takes farewell from Olyn by giving him a strong handshake and remembering all the moments of peril and glory shared with the half-elf.

"Luck be with you old mate! I´m sure a rogue like you won´t stay too long in the Temple doing chores!"

Then Champ appears together with a Dark Elf!

Dietrich the Bear, a very tall and very robust man, wearing a rune incrested breast-plate with a coat-d´arms of a red bear over black ground, and with a powerful two-handed greatsword on his side, immediatelly gets in alert.
The powerful knight observes the newcomer attentively from behind slits of his heavy bucket formed steel-helmet, keeping his hands ready to draw the blade (not yet peace-bound, as they just reached the city)

Rose
Thursday April 5th, 2007 5:39:21 PM

"Ok Oni, I'll try to open the chests back at home. We shouldnt open them out in public"

When Vauhwyt starts playing with the boat rose quickly leaves before anything can happen to her.

Berlon
Thursday April 5th, 2007 9:55:08 PM

Helping the others check over the boat, the others can practically see the dollar signs in the gnome's eyes as he considers the possibilites. Once that is done, he pressed two gold pieces into the harbormaster's palm. With a smile he says, "Keep the extra, and please, let us know if anyone approaches the vessel, would you?"

"Let's get everything unloaded, and then we can get to identifying everything and trying to figure out exactly what the ship is." He once again volunteers his Divination to Identify anything in the chests.

He narrows his eyes as Olyn and the other leave for the temple, but before he can say anything he turns his attention to the new visitor.

Presto Change-o [SteveK]
Friday April 6th, 2007 12:02:06 AM

Vorelle, Oni, and Berlon are on the dock, the gnome speaking with the harbor master and the other two confronting the blue-skinned elf and Champ. The stranger kneels and says something to the dog, but obviously Champ isn't taking orders from the elf. The canine gives the elf an intelligent look, then moves off a few paces, sits, and looks at Vorelle with a doggy-grin and tail wag.

Umbriel Highlight to display spoiler: {feels a confrontation coming on, and something in the back of his mind whispers that he will have to be the one to begin to establish a level of trust. After all, they all know one another for a very long time, and he is the complete stranger }

Theodore, Dietrich, and Vauhwyt cram themselves in the secret room and inspect the keel which is only revealed inside this room. Rose immediately feels it is time to leave the boat, but she only gets to the top deck when she hears "Yay! It works!", and then it is too late...

Like syrup poured from one shaped container to another, the boat FLOWS from the flat-bottomed keelboat and becomes another style entirely. There is no moment, no puff of smoke or sparkles around the water, yet after a few seconds (ooc: one round), the group is standing on a longship!

Seventy-five feet long, there are twenty oars on each gunwale of the ship. A single mast still stands in the center, and the tiller and firebox are in the same place, but there is no belowdecks to this ship. Theodore, Dietrich, and Vauhwyt find themselves standing at the tiller with an open trapdoor that shows the keel. Rose was on the deck just aft of the mast, and she finds herself at the same place.

The dockmaster oogles dumbfounded at the change, and it doesn't take a sharp eye to spot that he isn't the only one!

Stevedores and lazeabouts are the first with the whispered cry, and very VERY soon, the entire harbor is looking at... "the ship, the magic ship..." Without being able to see individuals, the Dirt City heroes instinctively know that informers are already on thier way to the Houses. So much for a quiet homecoming...

The dockmaster is the first to break the silence. "Um... one gold for a keelboat and no cargo. Ten gold for a magical boat." He holds out his hand towards Berlon.

Vorelle
Friday April 6th, 2007 1:30:17 AM

[Description for Umbriel] The woman standing on the dock is difficult to see clearly. She is wrapped in a voluminous cloak, the hood pulled over her head so that her features are shadowed. She is too tall to be an elf, and quite slender--either a half-elf or a thin human; it is difficult to tell. There is a quiver on her back, but no sign of a bow. Her voice is soft, and she speaks with a noticable stutter.

Seeing that Champ remembers her, Vorelle kneels on the dock to give him a proper greeting. Then the ship changes. Startled, Vorelle makes an odd little sideways hop, nearly overbalancing. She watches, wide-eyed, as the longship unfolds.

She shakes her head at the commotion. At times, Vauhwyt and Rose are no better than a pair of children. "Th-th-this is t-t-trouble," she says softly.

Oni
Friday April 6th, 2007 3:11:36 AM

Oni can not be troubled with such idle things. People scurrying to see what is happening beside him. He had heard the commotion, but did not take his eyes off the dark elf in front of him.

Actually everything around him seems to have warped into a stasis of non ovement. The Drow in front of him was not of the same sect that had imprisoned him for so long. Memoriesof the captivity and endless work flooded his mind. Only a corner of his mind, for the dark elf controlled most of it.

Was it the magic tyhat the priest had bestowed upon him? Why was he not angered. Why this new feeling of brotherhood. WHAT? WHHHHAAAATTTTT?

And yet unspeakable, unintelligble, there it was. A feeling of familiarness. A feeling of family. A feeling of belonging. Just as the whole clan of drow acted while he was captive.

He stands there motionless. O Jancassiss what have you done to me???!!! The thought races through his head.

Vauhwyt and Mookie  d20+8=16 d20+15=35
Friday April 6th, 2007 6:14:07 AM

"Mookie!" Vauhwyt chides, "Don't be such a baby! It's not like it could transform into some kind of altered fireball of phenomenal proportions! Look, I totally get this now. All you have to do is wave your hand like this and say ..."

Mookie pipes up, "Boss, wait! What about doing that ..."

Mookie, seeing the hopelessness of restraint, tries his best to help ... Aid Another check gives Vauhwyt a +2 ...

"Oh yeah!," Vauhwyt exclaims, "Good idea, my fine feathered friend! Maybe I can make it tiny if I follow up with something like this ..."

Vauhwyt needs a 25 to make the device work. If she gets a 15 or less, it backfires. If she gets a nat 1, she has to give it up for today. She has a natural +11 from ranks and Chr. She has a +2 from Mookie and a +2 from having done it right the first time. Her total bonus is +15, so the worst that can happen is if she rolls a 1, then she gets a 16 ... no backfire, but she would have to stop for the day.

Her UMD roll this time ... HOLY WOWSY WOW WOW! Another Nat 20! It works!

This time Vauhwyt is nonchalant as the boat flows around again.

"See, what did I tell you! It's easy as pie."

Berlon
Friday April 6th, 2007 7:53:18 AM

"You're right!" Berlon exclaims, "this changes EVERYTHING!"

With that he snatches the gold back from the harbormaster and turns to confer with Vauhwyt. "Can you make it portable? We might not even have to leave it in the harbor..."

DIetrich
Friday April 6th, 2007 8:21:25 AM

Dietrich´s first reaction at Vauhwyt´s experiment is: "&*%&*¨*&¨" He even forgets the Dark Elf standing at the pier.

Particularly as crowds of people are coming, the warrior isn´t exactly happy about it...
On the other hand, the party has just solved the Ghost Ship mistery and the people of Dirt City should know about it...

Finally, when Vauhwyt continues messing with the ship, Dietrich is quick to leave the longboat and jumps to land.

Theodore & Macaw
Friday April 6th, 2007 1:16:57 PM

"Wait, wait!" cries Theodore when he sees Vauhwyt make another attempt to change the boat. "Let me get off first!"

He tries to retreat to the dock for safety, but steps on the hem of his trouser and spills onto the floor. Macaw simply flaps away, leaving his master to his fate.

Mookie
Friday April 6th, 2007 2:22:59 PM

Seeing Theo and Dietrich beat hasty retreats, Mookis caws, "You guys got no faith in the Boss!"

He seems to have forgotten that a moment ago he had no faith in her, either.

Umbriel
Friday April 6th, 2007 8:32:04 PM

Ignores the wonderment going on behind the cursed darkelf standing in front of him.

Not moving forward but not retreating, and with an unemotional look on his face, speaking to the centaur with a dark elf body.
So, did she curse you into this form or is this your natural being?

Change-o Presto [SteveK]  d100=3
Friday April 6th, 2007 9:28:17 PM

Vorelle kneels and Champ comes willingly to his freind. The reunion is not anything like a long-lost dog finding its master, but everything like two companions meeting after an absense. Vorelle seems happy about the reunion, but not comfortable at all about the magic of the boat revealed.

Oni stands still, unable to concentrate on anything other than the drow before him.

Vauhwyt continues to play with the keel of the magical boat (ooc: no Aid Another possible on UMD), and though Mookie tries to get in the way, Wardd must be strong in the harbor today. The boat FLOWS again, and returns to the keelboat form that it came from. She, Dietrich, and Theodore are once again in the secret room belowdecks.

Berlon snatches the two gold from the harbormaster's too slow hand, and asks if Vauhwyt can somehow make the ship portable.

Dietrich curses, then reflects that at least the group has made an entrance! When the boat flows again, Dietrich is quick to get out of the boat and onto the docks.

Theodore falls into the bottom of the longboat, and kneels in the belowdeck of the keelboat. Macaw is able to circle the magical apparatus from above.

Umbriel uses the opening of confronting one person with the group on the magical boat... "So, did she curse you into this form or is this your natural being?"

Despite the boat looking like it did when it arrived, the commotion along the harbor hasn't deminished. To be sure, there will be people who will recognize you soon. Doing anyting in private has a limited time. Very limited.

Vauhwyt  d20+13=27
Friday April 6th, 2007 9:44:33 PM

Vauhwyt thinks to make sure that the chests are safely off the boat and in the possession of the party.

Then she pushes her luck one more time. She really wants to make the ship small. Especially since she strongly fears that if the party were to leave it at the dock, they would never see it again.

"I bet you are right, Berlon!" the foolhardy liontaur says. "Let me see if I can shrink this thing down to size."

She waits until everyone is off the boat who wants to be off.

Then she looks at the magic keel. Hey, what if she cast Read Magic on the signs? The sorcerer does so, using her last spell slot of the day, a second level slot, to cast Read Magic.

Maybe what she learns will help her in using her UMD to shrink the boat to portability.

And her roll ... at +13, looking for a 25 or better, and not a 15 or lower! ... it's a 27! Sweet enough!

Maybe this time she got it to shrink down?

OOC to DM: Highlight to display spoiler: {But note that realistically, not more than a minute tops has gone by since the boat started morphing. By some counts, not more than three rounds! Surely there's a *little* time before the vultures gather in force? :-)}

Oni
Saturday April 7th, 2007 2:23:28 AM

Oni breaks out of his trance, thinking on what the dark elf had just said. He really had no answer.

"Rose, lets get them chests loaded on my back, and get to where we need to go. Vorelle, can you and ChMP Maksure the way is clear? Dietrich, grab Theo and Vauhwyt, lets get moving. Master Berlon, i think it be best if you ride me as well, to help secure the containers."

Was he giving orders? Odd, the drow had awakened more than he knew was buried.

Theodore & Macaw
Saturday April 7th, 2007 1:51:17 PM

Theodore gets up and off the ship as quickly as possible, not wanting to stick around any longer.

Now off the ship, he gulps at the air, trying to calm his nerves. "That Vauhwyt," he says, shaking his head, incredulously. "She's gonna kill me. No doubt about it."

"Oni, hold up a moment, please. We can't leave without securing the boat." He moves closer to the centaur before whispering, "You're probably not too familiar with how things work in this city, but if we leave this ship unguarded, it won't be here tomorrow."

Oni
Saturday April 7th, 2007 2:13:17 PM

Oni to Theo

"I have heard of spells that shrink items. Can you do that. What if we pooled some money, could you buy a scroo to accomplih this. Some could stay and guard boat, while others go to get scroll, what you think?"

"And you are correct I have only spent a few days here in Dirt City."

Berlon
Saturday April 7th, 2007 8:17:32 PM

Berlon frowns slightly at Oni's generous offer. "Thank you, but I'm not exactly, err...."

He then turns to the matter at hand with the vessel.

Presto - What-o? [SteveK]
Monday April 9th, 2007 6:49:05 PM

OOC: Looking for all character sheets to be emailed to your DMs NLT this Friday for a first look-see. Will also use these sheets as update for the Woldian depository. Once I get character sheets in, I can look them over and decide whether to be an extremely nice guy or ...

Vauhwyt ensures the chests are offloaded from the keelboat (and incidently, all the other group members too) before she starts experimenting with the magical keel once more. The Read Magic doesn't reveal the secrets of the Runes on the keel, but... Vauhwyt roll Spellcraft check.

Rose reverses her scamper to get off the boat in order to get back on the boat and try to assist her liontaur friend.

This generous offer puts Oni, Dietrich, Theodore, and Vorelle (with Champ) on the docks facing a still-stunned docksmaster and a blue-skinned dark elf wrapped in his cloak. A couple of minutes have passed in getting the chests out, and the people on neighboring ships, along the wharf, and slowly gathering from the marketplaces looks more curious than anything. Each of the long-time denizens of Dirt City knows that the Houses will soon know. And unless credentials or patrons of the ship are made known, it is likely an unguarded boat will be gone by morning.

Plans are made to bring the three chests to a safer place by being set on Oni's back. Vorelle also calls to stop her impertnent friend from fooling around with magics that they know nothing about. Alas! To no avail...

Vauhwyt tries to harness the warping magics once more. Rose tries to help, but as Mookie found, there can be no assistance in using a magical device. Posing and speaking, Vauhwyt looks impressive... but nothing happens. It looks like the luck of Wardd has left. Instinctively, Vauhwyt knows that to work the magic more reliably, she will need to consciously emulate some trait that she currently is not. This would be in addition to the command words that she doesn't know and was able to fool the boat's magic to replicate. Vauhwyt Highlight to display spoiler: { OOC: In effect, the DM (me) had the natual 20 automatically succeed on what otherwise would never been able to happen. Other than rolling natural 20s, it looks like there needs to be some more research done on the boat.}

Umbriel Highlight to display spoiler: {In the count, Umbriel is missing the liontaur Vauhwyt (who has yet to show on the docks), MadJack, and the presense of Oni. He knows it takes hours to properly gather good information (ooc: d4+1 hours), and the only motive he can immediately sense is that the 'heroes' aligned along the dock before him aren't trying to hide anything nor are they particulary hostile. For the gathering crowd, Umbriel doesn't see anyone who sticks out of the generally unwashed, amazed, and slightly ruffian look he has come to expect in Dirt City.}

Oni's large frame allows the chests to bew placed on his back. He asks Dietrich to walk beside him, to help balance the load. Walking through a crowd would be a best cumbersome. He moves his axe to a position ready to draw, or loose if needed.

"Master Berlon, did I not here you say one time we are affiliated with some Merhants guild? Maybe they could watch over the boat. I still think shrinking it would be best.

Oni scans the crowd looking for the dark skinned elf. It was odd to see one, well, one who was not an immediate threat. Ohers around the elf had not been affected by its presence. Maybe that is why he didnt lose his tempe. It would have to wait in any case. The chests first.

Berlon
Tuesday April 10th, 2007 9:41:44 AM

Berlon rubs his temple and tugs on his short beard. "I am but an amateur alchemist," he replies quietly to Oni, eyes still on the ship, "I'm not sure what would make you to say that, especially in public."

He then walks over to Dietrich. "We can't figure this thing out now, but I am reasonably sure we can decipher much of the mystery tomorrow, after proper preparations."

"Perhaps it would be wisest," he continues as he walks back over to the harbormaster, "to follow Vorelle's sage words and set up a guard until we can resolve the matter?" With that, he smiles politely, counts out twenty gold, and gives the coin to the harbormaster, saying, "Any help you could offer would be most appreciated."

Theodore & Macaw
Tuesday April 10th, 2007 1:42:17 PM

"I don't have any magic to shrink the boat, Oni, but perhaps leaving someone to watch the boat isn't a bad idea." Theodore whispers to Macaw, who has landed on his shoulder, and the raven flaps up to roost on the mast.

"Macaw can keep an eye on things for us. If someone looks suspicious, he'll give me a warning."

He doesn´t want to leave the boat behind unguarded, but leaving a guard could be dangerous too. The party has made powerful enemies in the City and he doesn´t like the idea of splitting the group, leaving just one or two behind.

"If we leave comrades here, we should come back quickly. Let´s move to the Merchants and get rid of this chests. Maybe we can arrange protection for our boat there too."

If Dietrich sees any known faces, people that helped the party at the Prince´s Palace etc., the warrior will greet them heartly and announce that they´ve solved the ghost-ship problem.

He´ll also ask about general news while the party were absent.

Guarding the Boat [DM SteveK]
Tuesday April 10th, 2007 9:47:56 PM

The boat still floats placidly tied next to the pier. The slowly gathering crowd is still on the wharf about 50 feet away, and don't seem inclined to chance the narrow pier.

The harbormaster makes the coins disappear (making sure Berlon can't take them back again!), and agrees that the boat won't be touched "As long as the light lasts."

A jaundiced eye at the two crows on top of the mast tell Dietrich that the harbormaster doesn't really like the birds' added protection, which, in turn, probably convinces the warrior that thier precautions are sufficient.

Oni is ready to go, and Berlon is ready to lead the way. However, there are two problems. The first is that Vauhwyt still hasn't made an appearance after her last attempt. The second is the pier is only five feet wide and is being blocked by the blue-skinned elf.

Umbriel Highlight to display spoiler: { tell me I'm wrong, but I don't remember Umbriel leaving the pier or melting into the crowd? So I've still got him in front of the group.}

Dietrich and Berlon are fairly certain that if they don't go anywhere, the news of thier arrival (and representatives of the Houses) will come to THEM.

Oni
Tuesday April 10th, 2007 11:32:51 PM

The dark elf was back. In his vision now, point blank there, almost tauntingly. The dark one speaks, and Oni realizes the accent is odd. The only reason logically was this creature was from some where else.

"Years imprisoned by your kind dark one. That is why I am so 'touchy' Upon my freedom, the Lady blessed/cursed me with this skin. That was not long ago."

Oni feels no threat coming from the elf, just curiosity. Ruse? Looking arund the docks he searches for others. Trap? Not likely, this one was different.

"Move aside dark one, we have business to attend to."

Vorelle and Champ
Wednesday April 11th, 2007 12:17:08 AM

Vorelle stands, torn on the dock. Should she stay and guard the boat, or go with her friends? Should they shove past the dark elf, or wait to find out what he wants? Should they speak reasonably to the crowd, or flee before they get here?

And what in Wardd's name is keeping Vauhwyt?

Sensing his friend's disquiet, Champ begins to bark.

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Wednesday April 11th, 2007 6:20:25 AM

Vauhwyt has been standing, looking at the keel. It should have worked! She should have triggered the magic? What went wrong?

She begins to realize that she was not just lucky, she was VERY lucky. To activate the boat again, she will either need more of that "nat 20" style, or she will have to get in better tune with the magic. In the latter case, she will need more time to experiment ...

"Boss! Boss! You gonna stand there all day?" Mookie brings the liontaur from her contemplations.

"Oh, sorry," she says.

Vauhwyt shakes the cobwebs from her brain and goes above deck. She sees Vorelle close by and her friends. She explains that she will need more experimentation before she can figure out the boat. She asks Theo or maybe Berlon to cast Identify on the vessel. That would tell her more.

"You need a special characteristic to operate the boat normally. Like being Good, or a Dwarf, or a Follower of Alemi, or something. An Identify might tell us which it is."

She immediately volunteers to stay with Vorelle and guard the boat.

She sees the dark elf, and talks to him, "Hiya, friend! Did you come to meet the Black Bird Gang? That's us! Also known as the Patsy Heroes, the Prince's People, the Loam of Dirt City, Dietrich's Daredevils, and the Georgeous Ghostbusters!"

"I'm Searjeant Vauhwyt, third in command under General Mookie herre" -- she indicates the raven on her shoulder -- "and we're always happy to help the people of our gritty metropolis."

Mookie caws, "What can we do you for? We just got back from saving the city again, but we always make time for paying customers. You do have the standard payment? I take platinum or worms."

"You just can't get good worms at sea," General Mookie concludes sadly.

Theodore & Macaw
Wednesday April 11th, 2007 1:04:44 PM

Theodore is ready to go back home for a little rest and relaxation, but it seems there is a figure blocking his path, not to mention the crowd of gawkers beyond him.

With Macaw and Piper perched on the ship's mast, Theodore is certain they will at least have fair warning before the ship is set upon.

"I guess we should visit Neezer, first. We do need to collect the remainder of our contracted price. What do you think, guys?"

Dietrich
Wednesday April 11th, 2007 2:22:23 PM

Satisfied to see that the Dark Elf doesn´t pose any immediate threat, Dietrich is ready to go, anxious to get cash for their booty before any greedy eyes come upon it.

But as Vauhwyt delays the group, the knight waits and he agrees with her and Vorelle staying guard, while the rest moves to Neezer and the Merchant´s Guild.

The warrior hears Vauhwyt´s jesting comments towards the Drow, but doesn´t really care about it for now.
Finally, as there´re no friends of the party at the pier, with whom they could share their deeds, DIetrich really wants to get on his way.

"Alright guys, let´s move!"

Vauhwyt Extra
Wednesday April 11th, 2007 3:02:53 PM

By the way, Vauhwyt is a liontaur. She is a lion (with four feet and a tail) from the waist down, and a human (with cat's eyes and more pronounced incisors) from the waist up.

She has a high-pitched voice (think of Karen from Will and Grace), a mane of hair that is swept back on one side to reveal an earring (a green leaf) but which covers her ear and face on the other side.

She is wearing padded armor with spikes, a spiked gauntlet, a buckler, and a longspear. She wears "saddlebags" on the leonine part of her body for carrying things.

A careful eye might notice that she wears a small blue pin with two tines and a silver ring with a wolf's head with amber eyes.

Berlon
Wednesday April 11th, 2007 3:34:08 PM

"I really think we should stay overnight with the boat. You all go on, I will keep watch, then perform the proper divinations come the morn. We have the harbormaster till sunset, and two of us should be able to handle things."

"Young Theo!" he calls out, "why don't you keep watch with me? We have things to discuss and I have, er," the gnome seems unusually at a loss for words, "I have a favor to ask of you..."

"Also, Dietrich, come the morrow, could you look into hiring an attendant, perhaps one of those nice young men from the ship? I suddenly have need of," he pauses awkwardly again, "well, let's use the word 'torch bearer,' I need a torch bearer..."

Vauhwyt

"Fourr! Four of us, you mean, good Berlon. Me, Vorelle, you, and Theo."

Hey guys, that leaves me, Dietrich and Rose taking the loot to Neezer. Rose if rom the city lower, Dietrich from out of town, and Me co,plete stranger to Neezer. Not only ilogical, but he will in all probability scamthe pants off us.

It is my opinion that Berlon go, since he had the best repor with Neezer. Also we need Vauhwyt to go as well. She represents the 'heroes' more than anyone. Theo has already posted he 'wantsd' to go home for a bit

Wednesday April 11th, 2007 10:04:55 PM

Vauhwyt arrives from the boat and provides some more information to the others about the keel's properties.

Oni asks for the blue-skinned elf to move aside, and Vorelle wonders what would be the best way; go into town or stay with the boat?

Theodore and Dietrich both agree that going to town is the best option. Berlon wants to send some of the group to Neezer, but he would stay with the boat.

And through the debate, the drow stands there.

But the decision seems to be taken away from the party. For there is movement in the crowd, and then a couple of bully boys force an opening and out comes Neezer. He strides across the dock and smiles thinly at the Black Bird Gang.

"Perhaps we should retire to your vessel and recount the tale and speak of treasure?", he suggests.

Vorelle pets Champ a little to get him to hush.

"D-d-d-don't be s-scared," she murmurs. Even she isn't sure whether she's talking to Champ, or herself.

Dietrich
Thursday April 12th, 2007 8:25:24 AM

When the usual discussion starts, Dietrich is at the brink of desperation. Although he got used to it, the ex-soldier misses the easy days of clear hierarchichal military command...
He´d have agreed with Oni on this one, but then Neezer suddenly appears!

"Thank Wardd! Please, let´s board the ship to parley in a more comfortable place."

Vauhwyt
Thursday April 12th, 2007 9:45:55 AM

"General Mookie, permission for our esteemed friends to board?"

Vauhwyt gives the bird a look, and he knows how to answer: "Caw! Permission granted!"

On a whim, she motions the dark elf to come onto the ship.

Then Vauhwyt leads the Merchant on board.

"Welcome, friend, Neezerr," she says, just loud enough for her voice to carry to the crowd. "We have returned from laying the Ghost Ship to rest and lifting the 100-year curse!"

Theodore & Macaw
Thursday April 12th, 2007 10:27:54 AM

Theodore is torn between where to go and what to do. But then, everything is solved, at least for the moment. Neezer steps forward and asks to be taken aboard for some conversation.

Theodore sighs in relief and reboards the ship.

"Hmm, you'd think I'd be sick of boats after all that," he muses. As he passes Vauhwyt, he says to her "Now, don't go changing the boat on us while we're talking to Neezer. That would be impolite."

He pats Berlon awkwardly on the shoulder. "What was it you wanted to discuss? I'd be happy to talk with you after our arrangements with Neezer. Is that okay?"

Oni
Thursday April 12th, 2007 12:05:33 PM

The old tell tell sign of impending danger arises, his neck hairs raise. Being so burdened with the chests he felt vulnerable. Since his bo and axe would be useless, he adjusts his bidy to face the newcomers. Ready to strike the bully looking men, he hars the name "Neezer".

The old man walks with a definate air, and his friends seem to trust him. So this must be the esteemed Neezer. He automatically looks at Berlon. Odd the master had not confirmed knowledge of the man, since obviously it was true.

Oni backs on board the ship. He figures most will go below decks. He will try if his size will allow him, but staying close to the aft opening

Another oddity, the dark one is invited to the ship as well. He knew so little of his comrades, he wished he knew more.

Berlon
Thursday April 12th, 2007 2:22:50 PM

The gnome narrows his eyes at the approaching figure, but before he can welcome Neezer Vauhwyt's voice rings loud and clear. "Don't forget the hard coin totals," Berlon mutters almost inaudiably.

With that, he smiles at Neezer and tries to usher everyone into the ship.

Discussions [SteveK]
Thursday April 12th, 2007 6:35:54 PM

The gathering crowd murmurs appreciatively at Vauhwyt's proclamation of laying down the 100 year curse. It also seems that this was the right thing to tell Neezer, for the thin older man nods and cracks a smile before boarding the keelboat.

Neezer accepts the groups invitation and moves to the lower deck. He looks around for somewhere to sit, but finding none, he continues to stand. The bullyboys do not follow Neezer onto the boat, but lounge about waiting for the talking to be complete.

All the others except for Oni also move into the boat and, with some mumbling, wait for Neezer to make the first speech. Oni stays up top, but is easily able to hear by bending his head near the hatch.

"Patience, friend Berlon," begins your front man for the House of Merchants. "First, the House must be satisfied that your boasts are true." He holds up a hand to forestall any outburst. "All Dirt City knows that you boarded the Ghost Ship and that you are now returned. And I have no fears that you have upheld your end of the contract." Smiling thinly, Neezer produces a book and quill from his vest and places it on the floor. "However, the records must be straight. This is a quill of truthfulness. It will write only the truth of your tale. Now," he says as the quill writes his every word, "tell me the end of the curse."

Vauhwyt
Thursday April 12th, 2007 7:51:17 PM

The liontaur clears her throat.

We were ready to attack the undead on the Ghost Ship, but the ghostly captain was himself under an horrid fate! He was doomed to sail the seas until his daughter was rescued from the evil that had abducted her and wrecked his ship.

He enlisted our help, and we agreed. We sailed on that undead ship for days, and then came to a small forbidding isle. We landed and entered a small keep. We defeated gargoyles, undead creatures, harpies, and a man with an octopus head. We found an altar to the Sick God, which we were glad to wreck.

At length, we found the ghost of the Captain's daughterr, and with her we fled from that place. The keep, and then the isle, collapsed into the sea. The Captain threatened to sink us with him, but we found this magic boat and returned home on it.

Vauhwyt looks around at her friends. "I think that's about it?"

Mookie caws, "Just another job well done protecting Dirt City and its people, thanks to General Mookie and the Black Bird Gang!"

Vauhwyt shoves the bird in his pouch and says, "Hush Mookie."

A muffled "Fine way to treat your general," might be heard from the pouch.

Vorelle and Champ
Thursday April 12th, 2007 9:31:09 PM

As the tale is told, Vorelle paces restlessly, too worried about the crowd outside to focus on events inside. Champ bounds happily alongside her, delighted with this new game.

Oni
Thursday April 12th, 2007 10:45:34 PM

Oni puts on his most menacing face. The onlookers need to know that the heroes are serious. Looking around he spots some people who wear farming type clothing. That makes him a bit happier. Open ground must not be far off

The rage he had during the fight with the octupus headed one, had freed him. So many days of suppressing who he was. Now he felt freer, released. He would continue along the chosen path, but now more for his own benefit.

He wonders to himself about the 'houses'. The crowd is made up of many different type of peoples. This was truly an odd city for him to be in.

Dietrich
Friday April 13th, 2007 8:45:41 AM

Dietrich is surprised that the Dark Elf is invited on board by Vauhwyt. "What is that liontaur doing again? Maybe she knows the guy from somewhere?"
When his friend tells the crowd about their deed, Dietrich looks around confirmingly, greeting known faces.

He listens to Neezer´s burocratic statements. Well, that´s part of the game, you can´t run an organization without keeping books, so let´s go over it.
After Vauhwyt´s short description of the adventure, the warrior adds:
"Don´t forget to mention that %$#% giant Kracken!
And for your confirmation, master Neezer, you can also ask the Dirt City youths Sharif, Leo and Arngrim, as well as the cleric of Wardd Olyn."

The knight asks Rose if she has anything in her bag of holding that could confirm what the party has done.

Theodore & Macaw
Friday April 13th, 2007 10:13:11 AM

Theodore nods along to Vauhwyt's story. That was the gist of it. A great adventure, but wonderful to be home.

Used to the rocking of the boat, he shifts his weight easily in time with the vessel as he moves above decks.

He gives Oni a suspicious wink and says, "What do you think about thinning the crowd out a bit?"

Turning to those still on shore, Theodore raises his voice, "To those who still doubt the sincerity of our actions, those who think we do not have Dirt City's best interests in mind, know that we will continue to work to make our home a better and safer place to live and thrive. I invite you all to look at our wondrous ship, which we were awarded for ending the curse of the Ghost Ship. Yes, it is ended! No need to fear for our youngsters, anymore! But make no mistake, this ship is ours by deeds done. We ask that you uphold the honor of Dirt City and do naught but look and touch our ship. Those who wish to possess this craft, be warned that you will have a task ahead of you."

Theodore thrusts his arms into the sky, and eight huge purple tentacles burst from the sea about the ship, waving menacingly as if seeking to grapple the very sky. "This ship has a guardian! Any who try to take or damage our ship will breathe water for the rest of their very short lives!"

In dramatic fashion, the gangly wizard swings his arms back down, as if cutting through an invisible barrier. The tentacles pull back into the roiling sea with a heavy splash and are gone.

"Like I said, Dirt City, we will work to make this an even greater place to call home. All we ask is your support and effort towards the same goal."

Perplexed at being invited as a guest on the magical boat, I will move closer to the boat but will not move on board.

Watches the crowd to see their reaction at the illusion cast by the mage, I turn to Theo and when he looks in my direction, give him a smirk and a wink.

Curiosity overcomes me and I finally cross over onto the boat, but positioning myself for a quick retreat should this turn out to be a trap.

Berlon
Friday April 13th, 2007 11:49:43 PM

Berlon remains unusually quiet, first listening to Neezer and then the others relating the tale. He adds nothing, looking very uncomfortable the whole time.

(OOC: Character sheet being updated & will send ASAP)

Oni
Friday April 13th, 2007 11:56:37 PM

Oni sees the tentacles in the water as Theo is talking. Somehow he pute it together they are related. Theo had mentioned he like to 'play' with his magic.

Oni was becoming anxious again. He needed to get out and run. Stretch out his legs, exhaust himself. Pent up emotions would not do.

Negotiations [SteveK]
Saturday April 14th, 2007 12:12:06 AM

The blue-skinned elf stays nearby, watches appreciatively Theodore's casting, and will even hop on the boat to listen at the hatch along with Oni. But by his manner, he doesn't accept the invitation from Vauhwyt.

Theodore performs his illusion and stage act for the crowd, and it seems to have the desired effect. Most are awed by the monster and/or the story of ending the hundred year curse. Still others note the bully-boys and know that at least one of the Houses is speaking with the Black Bird Gang. Be as it may, the crowd comes no closer while the group is in discussion.

Neezer keeps quiet for the telling as the quill sprints across the pages. He waits patiently until the quill ends with..."Don´t forget to mention that %$#% giant Kracken!"

"That is enough", the frontman says, "and yes, the youths and Olyn will also be interviewed to provide a more complete record." He smiles again. "But I deem that confirmation is unnecessary to impart fiscal compensation preliminarily agreed upon."

Neezer brings forth a small money purse which he upends towards the floor. A steady stream of gold pieces, quite a bit more than should be able to fit in such a small purse pours out until a tidy sum twinkles in the afternoon sunlight. Seven members of your team at five hundred gold each equates to 3,500gp to end the contract. Of course, part of the contract was the return of a rowboat, so I will deduct 20gp from the reward."

A slight sparkle returns to Neezer's eyes, "that is, unless you prefer to join the House, in which case I'm sure the rowboat and the expense of guarding and maintaining this ship can be subsumed into administrative expenditures?"

The party still has the captain's chest and two boat chests unopened.

And Rose still has her unopened books to research and explore. :)

Vauhwyt
Saturday April 14th, 2007 12:56:43 AM

"Now, Master Neezerr," Vauhwyt says, holding up the hand that bears her Wolf House Friendship Ring, "Friends with the merchants, friends with the wolves, friends with all the houses and the common peoples and the Temples and the Prince ... but enemies with none and exclusively allied with none! That's us! In that way we remain able to serve all for the greater good of our City."

"But thank you, as always, for your help and kind words. I think I speak for all us DC Superheroes when I say that we are always willing to work with you for truth, justice, and the Dirt City Way!"

Her tone of voice tells Neezer that she is being honest and friendly, but not above a little teasing.

She engages Neezer in small talk and asks what news he has of the city. Is there a new Prince? Any other happenings?

After he goes, Vauhwyt suggests that the party stay here on ship until they identify all the magic items, including the ship, and maybe get the boat shrunk down to size. Maybe that will take a day or two. But so long as the boat is here, we have to stay here to guard it.

Dietrich  d4=4 d20+5=20 d20+4=12
Saturday April 14th, 2007 8:28:55 PM

Dietrich sees Theodore using his magic and quite likes the little trick (check 20), it should prevent a lot of trouble with second class thieves and increase the popularity of the party.

Dietrich is glad that Neezer accepted the story and hands over the reward!

He too wants to know news from Dirt City and asks questions along Vauhwyt.

Personally, the knight thinks the party should discuss again about their alliances and allegiances, but he´ll wait to debate this when Neezer is away. But he says to the representative of the Merchants:

"Perhaps you would be so gentle to explain the terms of the House of Merchants to us. How exactly would this "joining" happen? We´re always happy to negotiate advantageous business with like-minded partners." (diplomacy 12)

Oni
Saturday April 14th, 2007 9:37:13 PM

Berlon, Neezer and now Vauhwyt talking about 'houses'. He understood the main details, but why the paranoia? Politics here must be a mess.

In the woods, it was always survivsl of the fittest. Along with others of his kind, it was to take care of life as best you could. Interference was couciled against. Guess with all these people vying for power was sure to be problems.

Having prepared to take the chests off to a safe place, it seemed now, they would beopened here. Before he took the chests froom his back, he would wait for clarification.

Sunday April 15th, 2007 1:43:59 PM

Theodore stays up on deck, prefering to let those more suited to dealing with the silver tongued Neezer to do so.

Seeing the dark elf listening intently at the hatch, Theodore asks him, "What's your name? I'm Theodore." He offers a hand to shake.

Berlon
Sunday April 15th, 2007 6:32:22 PM

Berlon continues to listen to Neezer and the others. When Neezer proactively brings up the Merchants, he winces slightly, but doesn't say anything either way.

"Perhaps," he says turning to Neezer, "we might convene for the evening and then we can meet again on the morrow? I am sure this is something we would want to discuss..."

Umbriel
Sunday April 15th, 2007 11:11:46 PM

Looking up at the apparent mage with the offered hand.

Did you know the concept behind shaking a persons hand? It is to show the recipient of said hand gesture that your hand is empty so not a threat.

With that said I nimbly stand from a squatting position to a position within a foot in front of Theo.
Takes his hand firmly in my hand. Then stepping up to be within whisper range.
My name in my tongue is too much for you to comprehend correctly so you may call me Umbriel.

Vorelle and Champ

Vorelle hushes Champ with a series of soothing pats. She keeps well back, away from the strange elf.

She sidles up next to Dietrich. "A-are we st-still g-g-guarding the b-b-b-boat?" she asks

Negotiations 2 [SteveK]
Monday April 16th, 2007 6:06:59 PM

Vauhwyt declines Neezers question, and then asks some questions: what news of the city. Is there a new Prince? Any other happenings? Dietrich is also interested in information on the city as well as closer association with the House of Merchants.

Oni is slightly confused by all the strange terms, but seems more than willing to listen and learn.

Umbriel and Theodore strike up a conversation. Perhaps the opening words of a great friendship?

Berlon doesn't seem pleased by the pressing claims of Neezer, and suggests a time later to talk.

Vorelle wants to know if they are staying on the boat or going into town.

Neezer shrugs at Vauhwyt declining membership, as if he expected no other answer. "As you wish, but know that membership in the House of Merchants automatically provides stays in the most luxurious rooms of Dirt City. In addition, all members are exempt from any special taxes levied by the House; like access to the Catacombs." And here he nods knowingly. "As mercenary members of the House, I am also authorized pay you a retainer fee even when you aren't on special assignment. Which, as you have discovered, are all very lucrative."

Still, he shrugs again, and lays off the heavy sales pitch for other topics. "There is no Prince for Dirt City right now, for there is no one the Houses will agree upon. So the Houses are still pretty much patrolling thier own areas and renewing dirty ops in the City Above. Yes, the City Above after dark is not a place to be around."

"Some days ago, the Gold Dragon hero group visited Dirt City. For that period, the Houses behaved themselves and played nice. I must confess, after seeing Valdor the Golden himself, I would think three times before stealing a gumdrop with him around!"

"Other than that, I may have further information for the right price." The calculating look is back in his eyes, and Neezer moves to the steps to the upper deck. "Come and visit my shop and we will discuss these and other contracts." And with that, he leaves the group to thier own thoughts and plans.

After he goes, Vauhwyt suggests that the party stay here on ship until they identify all the magic. "So long as the boat is here, we have to stay here to guard it."

OOC_Hey, for some reason we have lost Loretta/Rose, hope all is ok with her.

She is our resident rogue right? We need to get the two chests open that were on the ship, any ideas how we do that? Can we hire it out?

After Neezer goes, Vauhwyt has a couple thoughts on the chests. First, she herself looks them over for traps. She has no luck (rolled a 5 and a 3!).

She suggests that if Rose can find anything, Vauhwyt will try to disarm it. "My disable is better than my find, really!" she says.

Also, Berlon might be able to try a Find Traps spell in the morning.

Disable checks -- if the DM wishes to roll them -- are at +11.

Meanwhile, Vauhwyt is in favor of staying the night right here. But that does not mean acting scared.

"The more we act afraid, the more likely we are to be attacked. I say that we go to a few inns and taverns on the waterfront, give each say 50 gold, and ask for ale and food to be catered on the dock. Rent a few bouncers to keep orderr. Let's spread the word that we laid the curse to rest and throw a party! Do not act afraid! Act like we own the joint! Get a band! Light a bonfirre! Make sure the boat is secure, but also mingle with the people, boast, and celebrate!'

"We had a choice -- low profile or high. But we've blown our chance at low. So if we are to have a high profile, then let's do it right. Show no fearr. Act like heroes. And if anyone wants to take us on, then we'll have a fight on the dock! So be it!"

"Any other ideas?"

Oni then jumps off the oat. He decides to wander around alittle, keeping the boat in view, most the time. His inquisitive nature seems to takeover, as he goes from ship to ship at dock. He gives salutations to everyone. Since the issue of Houses really had nothing to do with him, he treated everyone the same.

Vorelle does what she does best--fade into the background and keep her eyes and ears open. Champ is more outgoing and willing to mingle with people. Especially if they have tasty snacks.

Dietrich
Tuesday April 17th, 2007 9:48:36 AM

Dietrich helps Oni unloading the chests, so that the specialists may go over it.

As NEezer already came to them, Dietrich doesn´t see any reason to leave the ship.

"I agree with Vauhwyt. Let´s stay on the ship. It could actually become our base of operations. IT´s defendable and we can move it if needed. Just Perfect!"

"Also, I agree with Vauhwyt about the rest too. Let´s show our friends in the City that we´re back and have once more saved the day. And let´s show our enemies our strenght and that any attack on us would cost dearly."

Dietrich takes farewell from Neezer, reassuring him about the willingness of the party to keep an excellent relationship with the House of Merchants.

After Neezer leaves, he suggests for the party to think again about their position in DC politics. Maybe an alliance with the Merchants would be interesting now.

Finally, before Vorelle and Oni leave on their own, Dietrich warns them not to go alone.

"Let´s move together in Dirt City Above. It´s more dangerous than ever and our enemies are only waiting to ambush lonely comrades. At least let´s move in pairs."

Berlon
Tuesday April 17th, 2007 12:14:43 PM

Berlon is fine with staying on the ship overnight if the others want, but he seems distracted, as if going over a checklist of preparations.

"We really should decide on what we want to do in regards to the Merchant. I have a feeling Neezer is going to ask us to do something, but I have to try to figure things out first..."

"Let me get with my plannings and preparations and we can work out everything with the treasure in the morning. We should definitely not do anything on the ship itself. If anything explodes we dont want to happen over the water..."

Theodore & Macaw  d20+11=26
Tuesday April 17th, 2007 1:01:52 PM

Theodore relaxes a bit after Neezer's departure. He's disheartened that they have to stay onboard for the night, but supposes it's not a bad idea.

"Ah, well. I guess my nice comfy bed will have to wait another night," he sighs, mentally preparing himself for another sleep on the boat.

Although not one for parties, Theodore can't see any harm in Vauhwyt's plans.

Wait a minute. When has there ever NOT been harm in one of Vauhwyt's plans?

Theodore furrows his brows, seemingly lost in his thoughts for several moments. He finally shakes his head and blinks his eyes, coming out of his musings.

Giving Vauhwyt a suspicious smile, he says, "Well, I'm not one for throwing a party, so I'll leave that to you. I'll stick here and watch things while you round up some revellers."

Umbriel
Tuesday April 17th, 2007 5:57:12 PM

Jumps off the boat, moving up to the Drowtaur inquiring: Its not safe moving alone nowadays brother. Want some company?

Plans [SteveK]
Tuesday April 17th, 2007 11:17:52 PM

Plans are laid about staying on the boat, checking out the chests, and figuring out what to do about the city in general and the Houses in particular. Dietrich brings up the possibility of aligning with the Merchants. And Vauhwyt, Dietrich, and Theodore all make plans to bring an open, return to the City.

Vauhwyt checks the chests and is sure that if there were any needle traps, she would have been a pincusion. Rose helps out and confirms that there isn't any traps, and the chests aren't even locked! Opening them, you find...

Pirate Chest
1,250gp
3 moss agates
5 freshwater pearls
2 lapis lazuli
scroll
2 potions
chime (which Berlon already took)

Chest#1
fishing nets, hooks, floaters, and line

Chest#2
clothing of volumnous proportions (good for hiding features)
disguise kit (masterwork)
small cask of cherry brandy (10gp)

Rose sends Piper into the City with instructions to find her family and tell them that Rose and friends have returned. And off flies the Crow, well remembering the food of Momma Rose.

Oni, Vorelle, and Umbriel move off the boat to cruise the nearby docks and eating establishments in the waning light. Several warnings follow them about being alone at night in the City Above, which only confirms things the two newcomers to the City have heard from others as well.
They recieve favorable reception from the people on the dock. Nods and shouts of "Welcome Back" to the young and growing popular heroes are the norm here on the dockside. Of course, the people who aren't shouting are probably listening to tell someone else in the City, but you can't have it all. The three on the docks are two unknowns and then probably the least known of the heroes, so they are hailed much less often than the boat (and the heroes on it) itself.

The sun is going to be setting before too much hullaballoo is available, so the common sense thing would probably wait until morning for any further announcements or parties. Especially after the warnings of Neezer that the dark is not the safest place to be in the City Above. Watching the other ships, by sunset, most all the sailors have moved back to thier boats, and the layabouts have mysteriously disappeared from the locality.

Vorelle and Champ
Wednesday April 18th, 2007 12:37:29 AM

After looking around for a bit, Vorelle returns to the boat, not sure why she left it in the first place.

[SteveK}: oops, i took your last post to mean that you had moved off the boat. Sorry to have Vorelle do something that you didn't want her to do! :(

Oni
Wednesday April 18th, 2007 2:12:57 AM

Oni offers the dark elf a hand up. As they walked Vorelle pointed out the main points of interest. As she was not prone to talk much, Oni felt satisfied with the info she was willing to impart. After a short time, She decides it is time to return to the boat.

Oni for his part is not to excited about returning to the floating splinter. Even the yells and clamoring of greeting, Hero's Welcome, dont excite him. At several establishments he accepts food, but will not drink. If this enraged the giver, too bad. Centaurian wine was the only strong drink he would partake of.

Finally finding a bit of secluded dock, he speaks with Umbriel. Offering his hand in friendship he begins.

"My name is Oni se Garath. Oni to you. My adventuring life started as a merchant. Ship was capsized, fell imprisoned to a group of surface Drow. They had a different pigment of skin than you do, and their eyes seemed to have adjusted to the light. Anyway, someone helped me to escape, and I spent several years in the forest and woods of the area.

"A call, from exactly where I dont know brought me to Dirt City. I was given names to seek out. Then i was compelled to board a ship. Odd the forces of nature here. Anyway, the names were of the people I travel with now. For how long you ask? no idea. See what happens.

"As far as all this Dirt City politics, and talk of Houses, sounds like orcish blather to me. The others take it very seriously tho, so be forewarned.

"So, what can you impart to me as to who you are, what you do. It seems the liontaur, Vauhwyt accepted you as though you were expected. Anymore I just go with what they do. Odd group you have sought out, odd indeed.

"Come on man, dont be shy. Maybe we can come to some sort of arrangement, to watch each others backs in the days to come."

Dietrich
Wednesday April 18th, 2007 10:46:36 AM

OOC: Dear DM, I´ve sent Dietrich´s charactersheet to your e-mail last Friday, but don´t know if you got it.

Dietrich is happy the chests didn´s explode and suggest for the booty to be shared.

"How much exactly did we get till now, including the 3500 from Neezer? I´d say it´s a good time to divide our loot! We should also decide how much of it goes for the group account, to pay the revelling and common expenses."

Although it´s dangerous to wander around at night in Dirt CIty, the former soldier doubts there will be any parties at daylight...

"If we´re to do some revelling and propaganda, it´ll have to be at night.
Come on guys, there´s no danger (if we stick together) in port taverns, brothels and other dirty and exciting places! Let´s have some fun! Maybe we can even have a brawl!"

The liontaur urges everyone to stay on board for the night, or at least to return before dark if they venture out.

She casts Detect Magic on everything. In the morning, maybe Berlon can Identify the loot?

Vauhwyt herself plans to be busy going about town. Who wants to come with her? Here are her errands, assuming they survive the night:

To the WLA to spread the news of the group's victory over the ghost and the party on the dock.

To the Temple to check on Olyn, the boys, and to Spread the News.

To the Keys to check on the apartments and say hi to Jeraldh and the boys and Spread the News.

To the Knives to visit Kurk and Harlv, who the party rescued from the cursed mines, to Spread the News.

To the Wolves to visit Kurk's cousin Burt, to Spread the News and see if there is any word about Targo, Vorelle's husband who the Wolves are holding, we think. Unless they killed him. Which they may have.

Not for the first time, Vauhwyt wishes there were a bard in the party to handle these face-time and PR needs for the group. As it is, the liontaur's untrained Diplomacy and Gather Info is not that great.

Mookie Aids Another, Diplomacy: helps, doesn't, helps helps doesn't.

Vauhwyt Untrained Diplomacy: 6 (nat 1), 21, 18, 17, 7

Mookie Aids Another, Gather Info: helps, helps, doesn't, doesn't, helps

Vauhwyt Untrained Gather Info: 12, 22, 19, 3, 15

Last but NOT least, Vauhwyt stops by at Church to ask a blessing of the good padres and say a couple prayers.

Finally, for the rest of the day, Vauhwyt makes arrangements for the party. She gets dockside taverns to cater drinks, roast pigs, cakes, breads, etc. She also tries to hire a few musicians and street entertainers to come too. And some bouncers for breaking up fights and such.

If no one objects, she'll spend up to 250 gold from the Pirate Chest to pay for it.

Vauhwyt really really hopes that one or two other people will come with her on errands! Like Dietrich said, we should travel in pairs.

She also really hopes that *someone* will stay with the boat all day!

Rose
Wednesday April 18th, 2007 12:38:37 PM

If necessary Rose will stay with the boat. If not (because someone else does) rose will go visiting and also spread the news of what happened.

Myself and Umbriel have already gone. Vorelle returned to the boat. So whoever else ought to go do errands with Vauhwyt. My plan is to return to the boat after dark, and staythere for the next day, so Theo can return home like he wants. Berlon probably needs to visit his lab as well.

Theodore amuses himself with trying to determine the value of the gems from the pirate's chest. Sitting cross-legged, he stares intently at each stone, looking for imperfections, clarity, and other such qualities. (Appraise 18 for moss agates, 10 for freshwater pearls, and 12 for lapis lazuli)

Afterwards, he takes his spellbook above deck to study and feel the sea winds.

If Berlon is by himself, he ventures over timidly, "You wanted to speak to me?"

Or tell me to bugger off! No, wait, you kinda did! :-)

Next Day [SteveK]
Wednesday April 18th, 2007 9:48:15 PM

Dietrich suggests how to share the loot, then encourages the group to have fun at a dockside tavern this night. However, he is alone in wanting to be about after dark.
After looking around for a bit, Vorelle returns to the boat, not sure why she left it in the first place.

Oni visits several establishments, accepting the food and words of the patrons and workers, and talks with Umbriel to learn more about the elf.
Vauhwyt disagrees with Dietrich, and urges everyone to stay on board for the night, or at least to return before dark if they venture out.

Casting the Detect Magic and turning slowly in a circle, the liontaur is able to note that the 2 potions and the scroll are magical (besides everything else that¡¦s been claimed).
Theodore amuses himself with trying to determine the value of the gems from the pirate's chest. Sitting cross-legged, he stares intently at each stone, looking for imperfections, clarity, and other such qualities. (Appraise 18 for moss agates, 10 for freshwater pearls, and 12 for lapis lazuli). That night he approaches Berlon to talk. (OOC: to move the story forward, let¡¦s take this to spoilers or email) ƒº
During the day, the docks are busy, a place where a lot of deals are made. High ranking members of the various houses can be seen rubbing shoulders with the lowest apprentice. When the sun sets, deals continue - but you don't go there unless you're up to no good, and/or have a good few bodyguards. This night is quieter than most, but while there is furtive activity down the quays on the east side, all is quiet around the keelboat.

The Next Day¡K
Oni stays on the boat for the day, and hopes at least one person stays with him.
Dietrich warns folks not to go about by themselves, so there is probably someone going with Vauhwyt and Rose on their escapades.
In the daylight, Vauhwyt gets busy. She quickly heads for the nearest opening to the City Below and then¡K

- At WLA headquarters, she recites the group's victory to Whitey, the Halfling, who is the only one present in the hideaway. ¡§The Golden Dragons invited all to some meeting, but I got to stay back and mind the store. Meetings can be sooooooo boring!¡¨
- To Wardd¡¦s Temple, Vauhwyt bumps into Elijah, the skinny old herbalist. Elijah will tell the liontaur that Olyn is in seclusion and will not be seen by anyone for one full moon. The young men have all returned to their homes, and so can¡¦t be found either, but Vauhwyt is able to find an appreciative audience in the foyer of the Temple.
- To the Keys area, she sees that both apartments are still in good condition and repair. Timmi is playing out in the tunnel, and he quickly brings Vauhwyt to the oval door of his father. Jeraldh still has the sweeping white hair and startling pink eyes, but the hair is receeding of late.
-At the Knives area, she¡¦s able to track down the house of Kurk and Harlv, but there is no answer. There doesn¡¦t appear to be anyone in the Knives warrens who are overjoyed at seeing the liontaur, either.

- At the Wolves Tower, Vauhwyt is allowed to enter by the leather-clad guards. Burt soon comes in and provides a snack while they talk about the adventure. Burt regrets not being able to tell anything about Targo other than he is still under Wolf punishment. What that is, he will not say. ¡§You are officially a friend to the Wolves. If Vorelle wants him killed, I¡¦m fairly sure the Alpha will agree. IF Vorelle asks.¡¨

- Finally, Vauhwyt stops by at Church to ask a blessing of the good padres and say a couple prayers.

Spending 250gp for the feast

Rose goes visiting in the Halfling Quarter and has a tremendous breakfast that goes all the way through lunch. From the rumors the night before, her parents are well aware their daughter is back, and most of the family is there as well. They are well pleased with the story and knowing them, the entire Halfling community will know it before the day is out. Rose is able to pickup Piper (who has been stuffed with candied pistachios) and make a visit to her brothers grave to talk to him more quietly through the afternoon.

Soon, there will be the party on the docks in the early afternoon, a hint of anticipation is in the air.

Vorelle and Champ
Thursday April 19th, 2007 12:24:35 AM

Vorelle agrees to accompany Vauhwyt to see Jeraldh, and to the Wolves, since she is also curious about Targo's fate. She is unsettled by the news, and remains even quieter than usual for the rest of the day.

On the way back, she makes time to stop into a bathhouse, and secretly hopes her friends find time to do the same. After weeks at sea, they're all pretty whiffy.

Champ does not enjoy the bathhouse.

Oni
Thursday April 19th, 2007 9:48:55 AM

Oni returned to the ship with Umbriel. During thenight, he had slept very soundly. Dreams had come easily. The wolves seemed to be on his mind. Those little ones he had played with only months before.

Another oddity, the spotted cat of the woods also permeated heavily on his mind. The all black leader was there watching as well. Watching. Always watching. While awake he remebered they were always aware of everything around them.

While alone on the keelboat, Oni could not shake the images of wolf and cat. What meaning did they have for him?

During respits he talks to Umbriel, and whoever else stayed on the boat for the day. His pensive demeaner was odd for the large horse creature. Taking his bow from his back he evaluated its usefulness. He also checked his axe and all other items he had. after taking personal inventory he had decisions to make.

Vauhwyt
Thursday April 19th, 2007 11:40:08 AM

Vauhwyt makes sure everyone knows about the party and has a job.

Dietrich: Vauhwyt asks him to head up security. The military man will no doubt know best how to keep things under control.

Oni and Umbriel: Vauhwyt asks the two of them to help with security. Be alert for potential fights and follow Dietrich's lead. Oni's large size and Umbriel's exotic looks will help keep common hoods intimidated.

Vorelle: Vauwyt asks her friend to keep alert for the more dangerous threats -- assassins, sabateurs, other enemies.

Berlon: First Aid, with lots of Calm Emotions spells handy. Maybe an Enthrall.

Theo: Crowd Control with Sleep spells, entertainment with illusions, backup fire-power if needed.

Rose: Gathering info, liason to halfling community, keep alert for enemies, Sleep spells for crowd control if needed.

Vauhwyt's job is to make sure the trains run on time, coordinate food, drinks, entertainment, and act as host and Emcee.

If anyone wants to do some OTHER job, that's fine too! Just let us all know.

Also, Vauhwyt will use message cantrips to keep in touch with everyone for the whole party. Since each spell lasts 70 minutes, that should cover the entire affair.

Berlon
Thursday April 19th, 2007 3:00:15 PM

When dawn gathers, Berlon seems wide awake, obviously having spent some time considering what might spells might best fit the situation. (Spell list follows at end.)

He instinctively is drawn to the potions. He holds them up to the light and takes a sniff with his large nose. Once that is done, he casts Identify on the first potion, and then repeats the process with his Pearl of Power on the second potion.

Once that is done, he will turn his attention to the scroll. Hopefull a Read Magic will divulge the contents. If it doesn't, he will cast Comprehend Languages to see if that helps.

Finally, he turns his attention to Theodore. "Well, Young Theo," he says with a smile, "I hope it's not rude to ask, but, er...
" he lowers his voice slightly. "Do you think I might be able to peruse any spell books you might have lying around?"

Oth - Detect Magic x2, Read Magic x2, Guidance x2
1st - Comprehend Languages, Divine Favor, Obscuring Mist, Bless, Remove Fear/Nystul's
2nd - Enthrall, Find Traps, Silence, Resist Energy/Identify
3rd - Invisibility Purge, Remove Curse, Prayer/Dispel Magic
4th - Air Walk, Summon IV/Imbue

Theodore & Macaw
Thursday April 19th, 2007 6:36:01 PM

Theodore just shrugs when Vauhwyt asks him to provide entertainment. "I don't have any sleep spells, but I can surely provide some entertainment, though I should probably keep the illusions in my pocket, seeing as I used one to try and keep people from stealing our boat. I have other tricks, though. No problem."

When Berlon asks him about his spellbooks, he looks a little surprised. "I thought you practiced divine magic, Berlon. Why would you want to look at my books?"

rose
Thursday April 19th, 2007 8:59:50 PM

rose is willing to memorize sleep spells, if Vauhwyt asked before she memorized her spells for the day.

Rose is sure she'll get information on stuff thats been happening, after all even if it doesnt come directly to her she has lots of family willing to tell her stuff that they found out.

ooc: doesnt message have a limited range, i doubt you can use it when everyone is all over the city.

Thanks Rose, for the sleeps.

Message is only for the actual party while it is going on on the docks.

The Party [SteveK]
Thursday April 19th, 2007 10:41:56 PM

Vorelle walks with Vauhwyt and learns first hand about the current status of Targo, her Grubber husband.

Oni stays on the ship and contemplates dreams.

Vauhwyt plots, er, plans the party for the early afternoon.

Berlon is able to Identify both the Oil of Darkness, and the Potion of Protection from Arrows 10/magic. A read magic also reveals the scroll as having two arcane spells; jump and shield.

Theodore gets ready for the party and continues is talk with Berlon.

Rose sets up her sleep spells and is ready for the party.

And the party is a great success. Held on the docks and nearby dirt on the side of the harbor closest to the old Prince's Palace, the place is packed. Food and drink and entertainment is the highlight, and there are several hundred coming and going through the two hours from the beginning of the party to sunset (where the party miraculously disappears). Dietrich and the hired bouncers has to knock a few heads together, a few purses are cut, and when the crowds leave, the group discovers two murdered bodies, one of the Knives and one unaffiliated. Yet all in all, that's not bad for a big group gathering in the City Above.

The partygoers hush down while Vauhwyt and Dietrich tell the party's story (three times), and each time they are given a roaring ovation.

Jeraldh uses the second time to appear with Vauhwyt and Dietrich. "Citizens of Dirt City, the House of Keys honors these heroes for thier efforts in support of our city. The House of Keys gives the Defenders of Dirt City 7,000 gold!" and he has two other Keys bring a large chest to the boat.

Vorelle, Rose, and Umbriel are able to find more treasures in the talk among the partygoers. Of various rumors is...
- The short list for the next Prince includes Jeraldh
- The Prince has disappeared into the bottle
- There are less boats from Alisidur than should be for this time of year
- The expected arrival of the Taur Isle Convoy is late
- There are contracts out for the Defenders, but none of the Houses have picked it up
- A group of adventurers went into the Palace and never came out again
- The Golden Dragons killed the Alpha Wolf and warned against any more dirty ops

Vorelle
Friday April 20th, 2007 2:33:20 AM

The Gold Dragons. Valdor was here. He was here and I wasn't Vorelle silently curses all boats, and ghosts, and pirates. Then she curses herself for being such a silly moonling. Likely Valdor didn't even remember her name.

Dietrich  d20+4=16 d20+7=22 d20+4=16 d20+6=9
Friday April 20th, 2007 10:34:06 AM

Only slightly disapointed that the party didn´t like his idea about the tavern brawling, DIetrich accompanies the frenetic liontaur in her endeavours.

Also, the knight gladly accepts Vorelle´s suggestion of a bath. He accompanies her and takes a bath + massage, oiling etx. There will be the big party!

Dietrich examines the area in which the party will be thrown, looking for weak and strong point in case of an attack, such as exits, places easy to defend, places from which you control the area etc.
(military knowledge 16)

The warrior also uses his conection in the city to hire some trustworhy thugs to help out, after all, he doesn´t want to keep watch during the whole party! He´ll hire 5 other low-level mercenaries he knows.
(local knowledge 22; diplomacy 16; intimidate 9)

OOC: WIll send the charactersheet again, thanks!

Vauhwyt
Friday April 20th, 2007 11:03:15 AM

The liontaur is really happy with how things are going. The party was a smash. Plus a nice extra reward from the Keys. Plus good news about friend Jeraldh.

But the name? Not so much. " 'Defenders of Dirt City'?" Vauhwyt muses. "What do you think of that, Mookie?"

The crow caws, "Boorrrinng! Might as well be the 'Crimson Defenders' or the 'Dirt City Redeemers' or the 'Defenders of Light and Hope' or the 'Dirt City Knights' or some other bland boring blah blah just like every other group name in the Wold! Gag me!"

Vauhwyt rolls on the floor laughing. "Oh! Oh!" She uses her tail to wipe away a tear. "You are too cruel, Mookie!"

"But 'Defenders of Dirt City' is pretty boring, I must say."

Vauhwyt thinks a minute. "We really better get together in a group meeting and come up with a good name, though, or we'll get stuck with it!"

Later, when everyone is together, Vauhwyt tries to get the group to consider a few other, less boring names. Some ideas she throws out there:

The Loose Ballistae
The Fair Ops
The Cleaners

(more to come)

Oni
Friday April 20th, 2007 12:42:31 PM

Oni enjoyed the party. His anxiety was growing. He needed to get out of the city proper to commune and run. Tommorow he would ask the others if they minded he leave for a day or two.

The discussion on giving the group a name seemed to be important to these people. Here in the city it must mean something, give you extra weight, or influence. Oni shrugs his shoulders at the idea.

"One thing might give credence to a name, is to use a foreign tongue name. What i mean, Use the word 'Defender' in a foreign language. Then the city proper would know both. You would here things like , there goe the Frelofs, the Defenders of Dirt City.

"Along that line, in Tauric, we centaurs use the word Morgasi, to denote the word 'defenders'. Well that would be a vague interpretation, but you get the meaning.

"Maybe the halflings, humans, or gnomes in the area have a name in their histories that would have feeling. Dietrich should know of a good military term. Maybe Theo knows an arcane uttering that would work. Defenders is a good name, alot of people, regular folk will remeber it. A foreign title give us mystery, intimidation, and credit."

Umbriel
Friday April 20th, 2007 2:08:17 PM

ooc_ Just a heads up. My mother in laws' home was robbed this week and almost everything of value was pilfered. Luckily, the culprit was apprehended thursday and hadn't had time to fence the loot so, after tagging, bagging and printing the police have returned our booty.
So, if you was wondering what happened to my posts, now you know.
Anyways, I will direct my posts to Oni which I would of posted on the days in question had I had the means to do so if that's ok Mister Steve Sir /salute.

Oni Highlight to display spoiler: { I gave up my house name when I came to the surface in rebellion. So I have taken the first thing I saw when I popped my head out of the cave for my surname, Blackstar. Umbriel Blackstar or just Umbriel for short. After wandering for a while, getting the lay of the land, I found myself in the forest to the west of here scratching a pittance of a living until I was apprenticed to a friend. (a look of profound sadness creeps across his face for just a moment, then is promptly replaced with indifference, an obvious attempt of subterfuge, the indifference look that is.) After many years of apprenticeship the time came to move on, and after hearing many tales of this city, having the political system like that of the houses of the drow, I decided to test it out for myself, to see how you surface dwellers fend for yourselves in that kind of setting and I must say, where they might be good at what they do its no way near the strife and subtlety's you see from my old way of life. (a short pause as we continue walking and talking with others, then, when we seem to be alone again I continue.) I have taken to being a hunter of sorts. Not like that of a ranger or forester but a hunter of men, I have learned how to find people. People who would rather not be found. I have used my talents as a drow well in this endeavor I have chosen. And have learned many things in my days. This is an exception my fine friend. I usually do not speak so much, but I feel you and I have a sort of comraderieship. So I feel I can speak more than I would normally to anyone else. As you will see when it comes to speaking the others in your group. As to this Vauhwyt you speak of. I have no clue as to why she accepted me so easily. Its a sign of vulnerability if you ask me. And if the others are like her, then yes, I say we take care of each others backs, for surely that train of thought will surely land us in the hot waters on many occassions. }

During the festivites, I will stay within visual of the Drowtaur, keeping an eye out for all possibilities of danger, preferring to not be among so many people. Doing my best at times to become overlooked rather than the center of attention.

When Oni suggests leaving, assuming to get out of the city for a few days. I will go with you brother. Since you have been gone (referring to the others) much as you can see has happened. And now that you and I are looked upon as being in league with these people it will be a good idea to not leave alone, at least be seen leaving alone. So safety in numbers as the surface dwellers say, my friend.

rose sleeps late after the party, when naming the group is (again) brought up by vauhwyt Rose says she likes the defenders of dirt city and also likes oni's suggestion.

Berlon  d20=14
Friday April 20th, 2007 4:07:22 PM

As the festivities commence, Berlon tries to keep a low profile. After a few courtesy appearances to the crowd, he returns to his spells and his discussion with Theo, away from the masses.

"Yes, well, Young Theodore, that's a life lesson, I suppose? People are always so willing to put labels on things. Some call me priest, some call me alchemist, some call me things I don't care to repeat. We have birds fretting over what name should be used in regards to our little group. It is all folly. It matters not what you are called, Theo, it matters what you are."

"I suppose it all boils down to being as prepared as one can be, no?" He smiles politely.

Once the festivities die down, he takes the time to listen to the information provided, and frowns at most of it. Even when presented with the chests full of gold, he doesn't seem as happy as one might think.

Upon learning about the two murders, he will try to find any information he can about the victims. These murders during the group's festivities should not be ignored. (Gather Information Check 14)

Once this is done, and once everyone takes care of whatever they are doing, he tracks down Dietrich to speak with him. He makes sure everyone is out of earshot, as the city has too many ears.

"So," he begins slowly and carefully, "I think it might be time we had a discussion with the Prince. What do you think?"

Theodore & Macaw
Friday April 20th, 2007 4:49:46 PM

Theodore nods in agreement with Berlon's words.

"Of course, you are right, Berlon," he says, somberly. "And I have no problem with you looking at my books. Just let me know when you would like to peruse them."

Theodore is also upset about the two murders that appear at their party. Regardless of whether the occurence is commonplace or not, the young mage seeks to change the conception of their city by making such things unacceptable.

"I guess it all depends on what we want to convey to everyone else," he comments on the job of picking a name. "How do we want others to think of us? I would tend to think of us not as defenders, because that conotates keeping the status quo. I believe we're trying to make Dirt City a better place. Perhaps something more along those lines."

Vauhwyt
Friday April 20th, 2007 7:28:54 PM

Vauhwyt still begs Berlon to Identify the Boat.

She also wants to get those gems appraised. "Did you wizard types know there is a special Appraisal spell you can get at the Catacombs? Might be worth a look."

She is eager to divide the loot. "Looks like about 1,500 each plus the items and gems."

She adds to the new guy, Umbriel, "Sorry, friend, but you'll get yours next time. Meanwhile, if you need a loan or something, no problem."

As for names, she totally agrees with Theo. "We don't want to defend Dirt City, we want to clean it up. That's why I was thinking about "The Cleaners." But there are other ideas along those lines. By the same token, we don't want anything that will threaten the powers that be too much. For example, 'The House Cleaners,' while funny, is probably not too good of an idea."

She suggests:

The Clean Ops
The Clean Operators
The Clean Sweepers
The Dirt Devils
The Dust Busters

She strikes a pose like a superhero and declaims to imaginary antagonists, "We're the Dirt Devils, and we're here to clean up!"

Mookie laughs and adds, "Suckers!"

After the Party [SteveK]
Saturday April 21st, 2007 10:45:26 AM

Vorelle muses about a certain Woldian hero that has spoken so courteously with her somewhere in her dreams...

Appraisal for the gems comes easily, too, and it comes out to...
3 moss agates 30gp each (90g)
5 pearls 50gp each (250gp)
2 lapis lazuli 20gp each (40gp)

Don't forget the three scrolls the party took from the library on the island
scroll: divine: bless weapon, hide from animals
scroll: arcane: charm person, magic aura, floating disk
scroll: arcane: scare, summon swarm

Dietrich believes a little hard work and preparation goes a long way. With his expert knowledge, he is able to find six young people that he feels is trustworthy. One you weren't so sure about is a former Prince's Guard, one Tad by name. You go with your gut and hire him, and find he does a really good job, both in knocking a couple of heads together as well as being in the right place at the right time to stop a fight before it got started.

Vauhwyt, Berlon, and Theodore talk about different names. Those with local knowledge realize how important a reputation is in Dirt City. Those who are spellcasters know more than most the power of words. And labels.

The three also agree on finding the reasons and culprits for the two murders. Berlon does a little investigating and finds the Knife was a dwarf by the name of Nikabrik. His neck was broken and tossed into the harbor. Nobody saw anything. The other was a foreign sailor from Alisidur. It looks like the heartseed was carved out with a sharp but jagged object behind the stage where musicians were playing.

Oni and Umbriel speak together and decide to get away from the city for a few days. Certainly does seem like a good time to do it. The City is calm, the people in general have a good disposition for the group, and any enemies will probably have to recalculate the return of triumphant heroes before planning any aggression. The group has heard no rumors about plans against thier person, and Dietrich is confident that a couple weeks of taking care of individual needs wouldn't put anyone in danger.

OOC: Heroes can do Catacombs (10% surcharge from the House of Merchants), visitations, local travels, creating items, and/or research for about 2 weeks.

Theodore & Macaw
Sunday April 22nd, 2007 1:34:20 PM

"Let's see," Theodore says as he peruses the three recovered scrolls. "I guess this will go to Berlon." He hands the divine scroll to the gnome.

"And I already know these two spells," he informs the others, tapping one of the scrolls. "But there are three that I don't know, particularly, Tenser's Floating Disk, Scare, and Summon Swarm. How would you like to share these, Rose? If one of us can copy the spell to his or her book, then the other can then copy it from their book. Would you like me to try first?"

"Anyway, I also need to head to the Catacombs. Anyone else going?"

Vorelle
Monday April 23rd, 2007 12:24:09 AM

Vorelle listens to Vauhwyt's suggestion of group names with a little smile. But she shakes her head when the liontaur is done.

"W-we're n-n-n-not cl-cleaning up," she replies. "N-n-not really. W-we're....unexp-pected. Unp-p-predictible. N-n-not what the b-b-bullies are c-c-counting on." She thinks for a moment. Too bad Wild Cards is already taken.

"Th-The D-Dark Horse G-Gang?" she suggests.

She does not intend to visit the Catacombs.

Vauhwyt
Monday April 23rd, 2007 6:27:01 AM

The liontaur jumps up and gives Vorelle a hug! "You are exactly exactly right! Vorelle, you hit it right on!"

"I like 'The Dark Horse Gang.' I would vote for it! But let me try to think of some other ideas too!"

She ponders for a moment, deep in thought, muttering. "The Unexpectorated. The Unpredicty Bulls."

After another pause, she starts thinking out loud again. "Unpredictable, Unexpected, those are the right ideas."

"I think we're looking for words like these: Maverick, Wild, Rowdy, Surprising, Startling, Bewildering, Astonishing, Amazing."

"But that's only part of what we are. We help people. We make Dirt City a better place. We're the good guys. We need words like these: Heroes, Sweet, Glad, Helpers, like that."

"Here are a few more ideas.

The Merry Mavericks
The Fresh Startles
The New Startlings
The Sweet Surprises
The Joyful Rowdies

Mookie pipes up, "What was wrong with 'The Black Bird Gang'?"

(more later)

Dietrich
Monday April 23rd, 2007 9:52:57 AM

Dietrich is really glad about the way things are going! The gift from the Keys came very handy, and nothing could be better than to have Jeraldh as Prince! He´s not particularly pleased that two murders occured during the party, under his security! Ts ts. But in the end he doesn´t become very upset, it seemed the dead were people who knew the risks....

The warrior totally agrees about the dividing of the loot. "Don´t forget to calculate the money we´ve spent to throw the party."

As to the NAMES, the knight has to DIsagree with his friends:

"Comrades, precisely because we have different goals from the other players in DC, and precisely because we are unpredictable, we should NOT announce this in our name!
We should not unease the status quo powers even more (except if we want to do it on purpose, to augment our influence with the common people).

ALso, I thing that before we discuss the name, we have to discuss our alliances. We have to discuss if we´re going to put our weight behind Jerald´s bid for the throne and if we want to keep our total independence and neutrality.

Finally, this decision also implies if we´re going to continue our plan of building up a kind of "popular party" in the City. If yes, I´d suggest to pick a name that reflects our bondage to the common populace.

In the end, 'Defenders' is a pretty good neutral name, it won´t upset anyone, it´s easy to remember and people like their defenders. If we don´t find anything better, I´d keep it."

Berlon
Monday April 23rd, 2007 4:08:34 PM

The gnomes scratches his chin at the debate, and clearly seems uninterested. "I'll be going to the Catacombs myself, but let's officially split everything before any one runs off. Plus I have other errands so if anyone is going shopping I will have to meet you there..."

Oni
Monday April 23rd, 2007 4:56:32 PM

Oni is visibly anxious, like achild needing to pee. Berlon has the right idea.

"Yes, I need to get out of the city for a bit, stretch my legs. Then i also need to go to the Catacombs. So who gets what then?"

Vauhwyt to Oni
Monday April 23rd, 2007 5:43:37 PM

Vauhwyt wishes Oni well in his outside-Dirt-City soujourn. She is carefull to warn him about local dangers: Do not go north, especially not toward the cursed battlefield. Stay away from roads, since some houses prowl just outside city limits for easy prey. The woods on the southern coast are nice, and you might meet a witch friend of ours, named Priscilla, that-a-ways. Her friend is a vulture named Warrick.

Vauhwyt suggests to the druid that he might find a useful animal companion on the southern shore. Maybe one of the famed Dirt City Black Eagles.

"Or a raven!" crows Mookie.

[Note: Vauhwyt just made up that "Black Eagle" thing in order to encourage her new friend to find a feathered friend with a black hue. We need more recruits for the Black Bird Gang.]

[By the way, Shegger, what's Theo's familiar? He has a raven, too, riht?]

Vauhwyt to Berlon

Lifts his left eyebrow while looking at Oni.

rose
Monday April 23rd, 2007 9:19:03 PM

rose agrees with dietriech about the group name. She LIKES defenders of dirt city.

Rose suggests that the pearls be kept for identify spells and wonders why Vauhwyt cant remember that rose has had barnums appraisal since forever.

The only thing rose wants out of the scrolls is to copy the floating disk spell into her book.

what rose will do the next 2 weeks.

24 hrs in a day 8 sleeping; 8 with family, eating, sleeping, reading the books she found; the other 8 as follows.

Preparations [SteveK]
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 12:00:51 AM

The friends talk around the different names for the group, some looking for something different, some for "Defenders", and some not really caring one way or another.

Vauhwyt lays out the goods, and gives everyone a chance to change thier pile. (ooc: this is your chance to object! If no objections by DM posting tomorrow, consider it done.)

Oni, Berlon, and Theodore plan to visit the Catacombs (ooc: whenever you want :)

Oni and Umbriel make plans to take off for a couple weeks and get some fresh air away from the city and sea.

Rose makes plans for some down time at home, some rest, and then planning on a great time playing with magic. Not sure if she'll be able to get it all done, but it's definitely ambitious!

Vorelle and Champ
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 1:11:29 AM

Vorelle pokes the vial with a cautious finger. "Wh-what d-d-does it d-d-do?" she asks, somewhat dubiously.

She is happy with her share of the money, though.

Champ wags his tail and manages to convey that he wishes the treasure had fewer coins and more bones.

Dietrich
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 10:09:48 AM

OOC: Hi Stephen. I´ve sent the charactersheet again. Did you receive it?

Dietrich too is glad about the money and will go to the catacombs.

He reminds his friends about the Name issue though. And about the much more important political issues at hand.

"Hey guys, we can´t just leave, everyone going after his own businessess. The City is still without a Prince and the dispute about who will rise to power will affect everybody, including us.
We have to decide if we keep the course of action decided upon before we left for the Ghost Ship, or if we reavaluate the situation.
And we have to use the short period of tranquility to prepare and advance our goals."

Berlon
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 2:04:56 PM

Berlon is happy to help count out and split some hard coin for a change, then will go ahead and Identify the boat.

"Now now, Dietrich, I think the group needs a short break. Let everyone do what they needs to be do, and we should be fine. We can take care of ourselves, no?"

With that he smiles and heads off to the run some errands...

Oni
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 4:43:33 PM

"Vauhwyt, thank you for splitting up the treasure. I am content with my share."

He listens as the others all talk about the group name and what plans they have upcoming.

"I need to get to know the city. For that an escort would be nice. But first i need to stretch my lgs, roll in the dirt, take a swim. Since Vauhwyt has told me the lay of the land, I will travel to the southern woods. Anyone who wants can travel with. I only plan on being gone a few days at most.

Looking at Dietrich, "When I return, mybe we can talk aboutthese 'plans' the group as made. I am sure Umbriel will be interested in his future fate as well. Oni winks to Umbriel

Tuesday April 24th, 2007 6:23:55 PM

"Then I'll take this scroll, and give you your share of the value of the scroll," Theodore says, taking the scroll of scare and summon swarm and giving Rose 170 pieces of gold.

He spends his days studying his scrolls, copying them into his books. He also makes a trip to the Catacombs, going with anyone else who is going, and visits Master Geoffrey to catch up.

When going about the town, he utilizes his hat of disguise to appear as someone else. Nothing outstanding, just a nondescript citizen running errands.

Summon Swarm 24 good

Umbriel
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 6:29:39 PM

Quietly saying: All work and no play makes jack a dull boy.

Stands to the side and watches the disorganization this group portrays.

Vauhwyt
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 7:09:13 PM

The liontaur continues to guard the ship, and is eager to hear what Berlon's magical examination reveals.

She notices Umbriel standing off to one side. "It's true," Vauhwyt says to the dark elf, apropos of nothing, "Yup, we're a very disorganized bunch. We go hither-de-pitherr, every which way. But it ends up working out just fine in the endings. And why not? Who says that marching in lock-step and following orders is best?"

"Not me!" caws Mookie, the liontaur's familiar.

"Me neitherr!" laughs Vauhwyt.

Preparations 2 [SteveK]
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 11:59:03 PM

Talk still goes around about the party's name and the party's agenda. This looks like a good time to discuss while members of the group are planning a couple of weeks doing different activities. (ooc: feel free to post multiple this week, and bring the discussion to email.)

Theodore plans to spend time in research and speaking with his mentor Geoffrey.

Rose has her plans all ready.

Looks like Oni and Umbriel have what they want to do for a couple weeks set up as well.

Berlon is ready to run various errands in the city.

(ooc: Peter, got the CS, thanks!)

Vauhwyt
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 12:43:15 AM

Vauhwyt continues to talk about the name with whoever she can grab.

"The way I see it, one reason we are having a hard time with a name is that our name has to do a lot. Here's what the name has to do:

1) It has to say we are the good guys. That's what "Defenders" has going for it.

2) It has to say that we are wild and unpredictable. Like Vorelle said. I'm thinking words like "maverick" and "wild" and "untamed."

3) It has to say that we are not to be trifled with. We have to hold our own in a tough town. It has to have an edge.

4) It cannot include an outright threat to the DC power structure. Something like "The Peoples' Revolutionary Committee for the Overthrow of the Prince" would be right out. Something funny or witty would work on this level.

5) It has to be concrete. Think Wolves, Darts, Knives. All very concrete. "Black Bird Gang" works on the concrete level, and the word "Gang" makes it edgy, but it fails to say "Good Guys" or "Wild."

Here are some ideas based on the above.

The Wild Heart Crew -- "Wild" is wild. "Heart" is good. "Wild Heart" is unpredictable, suggesting Hearts are Wild, as in a card game, and also Hearts are Wild, as unbridled passion. It is funny, because it is a pun, and thus is disarming. And "Crew" is edgy. Extra Bonus -- we are now evidently the crew of a boat.

The Def Enders -- "Defenders" is good. "Def" is edgy because it is slang (for Definitive). "Enders" is tough. "Defenders/Def Enders" is a pun, so it is funny, thus non-threatening. Only a little particuarly unpredictable or wild. Extra Bonus -- we've already been called "Defenders."

More later maybe.

Vorelle and Champ
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 1:00:28 AM

Let's see...

Dangerous to go back to the apartment.
Dangerous to stay on the ship.
Dangerous to go to my parents' house.
Dangrous to go outside the city.
Dangerous not to have a place to go.

Vorelle sighs.

Vauhwyt to Vorelle
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 9:57:36 AM

Vauhwyt instructs Vorelle in how to use the Ointment of Darkness. "You spread it somewhere, and then shadows flow out from it. If you are in the light, if makes things dim. If you are in Darkness, it actually makes things a bit brighter, since you need SOME light to make shadows. "Shadowy Illumination," they call it, and you can hide in the shadows even if there is nothing to hide behind."

"If you spread it on a small object, you can stick it in your pocket to temporarily douse or conceal the shadows, then take it out again to reveal the shadows."

"A rogue like me or Rose has to be careful, because you can;t sneak attack a person in the shadows."

"I'm thinking of taking it as a spell that I might be able to cast regularly in the futurre."

Vauhwyt to Dietrich about Names
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 10:09:09 AM

"Dietrich, you have some good points. Maybe we should not reveal our hand. Maybe we should not say we are the good guys, or that we are unpredictable. In that case, a name like "The Black Bird Gang" really is best, because it reveals nothing."

"I think that "Defenders" says both too little by one standard and too much by another, But my biggest problem with it is that it is boring, unimaginative, and colorless. Also dry, unfunny, and stiff. Also pretentious and generic."

Mookie pokes his head out of his pouch to say, "Gee, Boss, don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel!"

Oni
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 1:53:15 PM

Oni listens to Vauhwyt as she goes on and on about the name of the gang.

"We just took out the fabled Ghostship, Why not Ghost Defenders. Or go with Vorelles suggestion, The Dark Horse's, or Dark Ghosts, eww scary, hahaha."

Looking over to see Vorelles mind is making her face squench with all the thinking.

Vorelle, could you escort me out of the city? We can camp down south like Vauhwyt suggested. Be gone for 2 days, then if you would show us where you live. That would be great! Then we could travel as a group, and your knowledge would be invaluable."

DIetrich
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 2:54:57 PM

Dietrich won´t try to hinder anyone doing his private stuff, but he suggests to have regular group meetings to discuss several important things.

As to the names, Dietrich doesn´t object to the Black Bird Gang.
"But we don´t have to go around correcting people if they want to call us the Defenders.

Personally, I´m not very concerned about the creativity of the name, more with its pragmatic impact on our friends, enemies and neutrals. And anything 'wild' is not very suited to inspire trust in potential business partners."

Finally, as to the bondage with the common people, Dietrich smirks at Vauhwyt´s comment. But there surely could be a simpler and less dogmatic name to express it, SHOULd the party want it, that is.

In the meanwhile, Dietrich accompanies his friends on their errands and has some fun in the beforementioned dirty and dangerous places (taverns, brothels, brawls etc.), where he tries to find out more detailed information about the moves of the Houses for the throne.

Rose
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 4:13:16 PM

rose is very very busy, but when ever Vauhwyt brings it up (which is probably every night when rose wants to sleep) rose says she likes defenders of dirt city.

Theodore & Macaw
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 6:12:07 PM

"Well, I always thought simple was best. Especially for our town. How about the 'Black Birds?' Or just the 'Ravens?' If we want to incorporate the city into our name, we could go with 'City Birds,' 'Dirt Birds,' 'City Ravens,' or maybe, my personal favorite, 'Dirty Birds.'"

He smiles at the last name.

Umbriel
Thursday April 26th, 2007 12:23:56 AM

Piping up in a calm and steady tone.

You do realize giving your group a "name" is all and good but has a major drawback. Sets you up to be "Set" up if you know my meaning. Let the city give you a name. But don't call yourselves that name. Don't call yourselves anything but friends to each other.

Looking over at Oni. So, what's the plan?

{SteveK}
Thursday April 26th, 2007 5:53:39 PM

ooc: sorry for no post yesterday. Overcome by real world events! posting soon.

One Week Passes [SteveK]
Thursday April 26th, 2007 6:41:25 PM

The conversation for names runs rampant, brainstorms and other stratospheric phenomena abound. Names run from the silly, to the quixotic, to bland, to an interesting thoughts of multiple (or none) names by Dietrich and Umbriel. (ooc: this conversation can continue through the individual time away from folks)

(ooc: silly me, I didn't see Berlon's Identify on the boat. Information will be forthcoming in future post. Promise!)
.....

The next day, Umbriel and Oni take a walk out of the City. Vorelle is invited to accompany the black centaur and blue elf who both seem to wish to familiarize themselves with the area surrounding Dirt City. With Dietrich's warnings in hand about the Haunted Battlefield and Bone Mountain, the two (or three?) companions can learn about the area and generally stay out of trouble for seven days.

All the heroes who wanted to go to the Catacombs certainly have thier opportunity to do so. (ooc: remember to send your DMs MikeK and SteveK the final Catacombs purchase for approval prior to adding on to a hero's sheet.)

After one week, Rose has trained at the WLA, visited friends, collected her wand supplies, and successfully created a Wand of Expeditious Retreat (level 3), and a Wand of Magic Missles (level 3). Per the Woldian House Rules, Rose does not incur any xpoints deduction in making the items.
With so many different peoples in Dirt City, it is natural that there are different memorials to the dead. Very few use tombs, like the Tomb to Violet and Arturo. The House of Teeth likes to bury their dead at sea to sleep with the fishes. Some still use the Sunken Graveyard in the City Below (though they have to go well armed for fear of what may be lurking there. Two of the most popular means of the deceased are cremation (aka Jarring Granny) and using the deceased as fertilizer for the plants (affectionately known as the Hoffa Grave after a well known story of Hoffa and the jumped up Grubber's mysterious demise). Rose (and her family) certainly decided on the way they most wanted to remember Junior as his method of body disposal.

Dietrich is well satisfied with his week of debauchery. Sated would be too mild to describe the completeness which he has achieved his level of food, drink, brawling, bed activities, and information gathering.
It seems that Jeraldh is not the only front runner in the jostling for Prince. A dwarf named Ursik from the House of Knives has been making a reputation (and following) for himself as a level-headed enforcer of the peace. A relatively unknown human newcomer named Bernardo has been rumored to have made an alliance between the Darts and Cloaks. And Captain Darid has been making a name for himself with the Teeth, bringing in lots of tresures on his ship, the Crimson Skull.

Berlon uses the week to run off for some errands...

After one week, a ship arrives with news from Alisidur. Seems the sailing ship picked up a survivor clinging to a wooden spar while rounding the cape west of the Black Forest. The sailor was delirious with dehydration, so they took him below to recover. Yet in the morning, the man was dead with strangulation marks of large hands around his neck.

Berlon
Thursday April 26th, 2007 8:41:30 PM

Berlon frowns when he hears the news of the shipwreck survivor. A trip to Alisidur might be wise. Either way, he meets with the others when he has some time off, babbling something about scribing scrolls and brewing potions, though he is not very forthcoming with the details. He smiles uncomfortably at Dietrich's exploits, but he knows that it is important to blow off... steam....

When talks turn to the matter of a new "Prince" it's almost like he's going over a checklist in his mind. "It seems like every House has a candidate," he ponders aloud to no one in particular. "Well, *almost* every house." He must have found that last bit humorous, because for some reason he can't quite fully suppress a slight laugh.

Dietrich  d20+7=26 d20+4=21
Thursday April 26th, 2007 9:23:02 PM

Satisfied to be within civilization again, Dietrich enjoys the good parts of city live.

He´s not very pleased about the information he´s heard. It´d be difficult enough to get Jerald on the throne with the support of the minor Houses, but with everybody launching his own candidate it seems rather impossible.
The knight decides to make Jeraldh a visit, to get better info (who is backing Jeraldh, what are the chances of alliances changing, who is definitely against him, whom are the Wolves and the Merchants backing, who would Jerald like to support if his own bid doesn´t work, etc), before the party decides what to do.
(local knowledge 26, diplomacy 21)

When Berlon mentions going to Aisildur, Dietrich shivers:
"That´s one of the last *%&*%¨places on the Wold we should go to."

But Dietrich is worried about the sailor being assassinated in Dirt City. There´s a good chance of this meaning that Aisuldur has an agent here.

Finally, Dietrich has some time to make acquaintancy with the Drow.

"Greetings Master Umbriel. With all the action I forgot to give you the dued attention, please forgive my bad manners. It seems you´re a friend of Oni and Vauhwyt?
As to the names, we had the discussion before in the group and we did not chose any name. But now people are naming us as they wish and I personally think that our status requires a higher level of institutionalization, including a name.
We´re not just a bunch of loose adventures anymore. We´ve made powerful enemies in the City and got embroiled in politics quite some time ago.
There´s no going back, so I agree with Vauhwyt that we have to push forward."

ooc: I caught DM SteveK in a mistake! :) Per the constabulary castle there is no xp cost for wold unique items and spells found in the oshirr house, but there IS xp cost for making something with core rules. Therefore rose would lose xp for magic missile and expeditious retreat but not for rose's temp control or the appraise spell.

rose is still busy, not only is she working, getting info from her family (rose takes 20 on gather info) but she has to make a shopping list.

[SteveK] And I'm the FIRST one to admit that I'm a completely fallible human. More fallible than most really.... :)

Additional Rumors [SteveK]
Thursday April 26th, 2007 10:23:49 PM

The city is abuzz of what the Platnuim Dragons were doing in the Trade Quarter? Why did they destroy the interior of some crazy old guy's house? Why did they take two of the local halfings with them? Why was it that the Wolves always got their man on the spot first? And it seemed to be coordinated by a yet unknown Wolf candidate for the Prince of Thieves...

Vorelle and Champ
Friday April 27th, 2007 2:32:47 AM

When Umbriel talks about letting the city give the group a name, Vorelle shakes her head. "Th-th-that's a t-t-t-t-trap," she says softly, her stutter a bit more pronounced at speaking to a relative stranger. "I-If you l-l-let p-p-people d-d-d-d-define you, you-you-you're stuck with wh-wh-what th-they d-d-decide you're ab-b-bout."

Try being called "Grubber" all your life and see how you feel about letting other people name you then, she thinks, but does not say aloud.

Vorelle accepts Oni's invitation with one minor correction. "I-I d-d-don't l-l-live out there. B-b-but I'd be g-g-glad to g-g-go w-with you."

Champ, too, is delighted to spend a few days in the wilderness. He chases dozens of rabbits and investigates hundreds of fascinating smells.

Oni and Sho'va
Friday April 27th, 2007 4:54:03 AM

Oni takes Umbriel, Vorelle, and Champ out the southern gate. Once upon the road outside of town, he breaks into a gallop. Throwing caution to the wind, it turns into a sprint. He returns, trotting, mock chasing Champ.

The four travel to the woods. Oni removes his armor, and items, and takes a roll on the grassy land. If Champ seems to think that is fun as well, he can join in. Umbriel and Vorelle didnt seem to talk much to each other, but the time together seemed to help.

Oni communed with his God. He also studied the local plant life, and animal life. The dream of the wolf returned that night, and he found himself calling out to an old friend. Funny he should think of the once small pup as a friend. The name he had given it, was seared in his mind at this moment. He found himself calling out for Sho'va

The pack all rose their voices to the moon. One in particular, answering a call, a call of family. The young female wolf sprinted fropm the comfort of the pack. The pack sang a song of sadness. The wolf ran all night to reach its brother. Changes came to the young wolf as well. She grew stronger. Muscles started rippling, where muscles were not before. She became faster. At a water crossing she noriced her fur had darkened.

Oni awoke to a glorious day. Several times during the day he found himself repeating the name aloud. In the evening he was greeted by a song of the pack, sung solo. His spirits rose even more as he went to greet the young wolf.

To his surprise the pup he knew, was now grown. Dark grey with white socks. Beautiful. The pup did not recognize him. Casting a spell, he began to bark in familiar tones. Using language they both recognized. Little by little, Sho'va came to trust the drowtaur as her freind of a time not so long ago.

Oni introduced the other members of his group to Sho'va. Vorelle and Umbriel she had little use for. Champ on the other hand, well, she liked him, and is very interested in running, playing and being with the dog. After a couple of days of this, it was time to return to the city. Oni promised Vorelle they would go to see her family. With the dog and wolf leading the way, the party returned, well rested.

Vauhwyt
Friday April 27th, 2007 6:07:12 AM

Vauhwyt talks with Umbriel before he heads out to the countryside. "I thoght we could get away with no name, too. But now we are too well known. Like Vorelle said, either we define ourselves, or others will do it for us."

Vauhwyt spends her time training at the WLA, helping out at church, and trying to figure out the boat. Until she figures it out, she spends her nights sleeping on board, rather than in the apartment.

Theodore & Macaw
Friday April 27th, 2007 9:42:20 AM

Theodore makes time to visit his Master Geoffrey. He gives the old man a firm hug and a wide smile. "It's good to see you, Master. It's been a while. How are you doing?"

After a bit of small talk, catching up on what Geoffrey's been up to, and telling his own story, Theodore steers his teacher towards the political scape of Dirt City.

"What can you tell me about the bid for the Prince? Where are the people leaning?"

Umbriel
Friday April 27th, 2007 8:19:26 PM

Shows no emotion during the trip.
Practices following tracks when the others aren't watching.
Honing his "special" skills.

Reacting not much when the wolf appears, realizing after a few minutes that it was the druid's beckon. But still keeps his distance. Then, asking Oni a question.
Your friend there is of the wild. Not used to enclosed spaces, and not one to mingle with humanoids in harmony, how do you propse to have her come with you into the city, and down into the undercity proper especially? I can see a dog going in, <pointing at Champ> but not your new friend. It would be torture to her to have to do that.

Assessments [SteveK]
Sunday April 29th, 2007 10:51:38 PM

It has still been but seven days from your determined R&R...

Berlon wonders about the candidates for the Princeship, and does his own errands Highlight to display spoiler: { want to tell the DM about any errands? :)}

Dietrich decides he needs to meet with Jeraldh and see where he is in his candicacy for being the next Prince of Thieves. The conversation is meandering and full of subtle innuendos and hints (good thing Dietrich had those high Local Knowledge and Diplomacy skills!), and very unlike any previous straightforward meetings with the white Key. Jeraldh never admits that he is actually putting a campaign together to attempt to be the Prince of Thieves, but Dietrich is able to come away with certain points of interest.
- Jeraldh is the only member of the House of Keys that has a chance to being another Prince of Thieves.
- To be Prince requires the unanimous and tacit approval of all the other Houses. A candidate can't have burned too many bridges with the other Houses. Failure to have buy-in could result in multiple 'Princes' and civil war.
- The Prince must truely be a Master Thief and have a reputation for amazing roguish feats. Jeraldh doesn't have the reputation of the best Master Thief. Captain Darid, Bernardo, and Maguel (a Wolf) have more personal reputations than Jeraldh.

Oni, Umbriel, and Vorelle have explored the countryside and the centaur has found a natural companion for the trail of life. Umbriel expresses concerns for the beast, but at least on the outskirts of Dirt City, the wolf doesn't seem converned about the increase in the number of people. What Sho'va may think about LOTS of people and living underground may be another story...

(ooc: DM reserves the right to take over posting of any companion or familiar dependant on the situation, intelligence of the animal, and posting of the Player. :) )

Vauhwyt and Berlon absolutely know that the boat can change to at least three different forms (Keelboat, Longboat, Sailing Ship) and the activation somatic and verbal components for each. They are also certain that the boat's magic doesn't shrink or turn it into a suitcase, or any other convienient storage facility.

Theodore visits his mentor and it is startling to see how much more frail the old man seems than the last time he visited. The mind is as sharp as ever, however, and Theodore can find out a bit of what Geoffrey has seen and deduced.
- Currently, non-House affiliated people aren't leaning towards anyone. All the Houses seem self serving and they don't care about the common person anyways.
- Geoffrey is hesitant to say it, but thinks that the situation of Dirty Ops above is going to get worse unless something significant happens to bring everyone together; like the death of Violet and Arturo.
- Geoffrey also mentions spell components for certain spells are getting scarce. When pressed and discussed, it seems like these components are ones that are imported from the Tauric Isles and Alisidur.

And the conversation on the names is still far from over...

Vorelle and Champ
Monday April 30th, 2007 9:17:21 AM

When Oni promises that they will go see Vorelle's family, Vorelle shakes her head. "Y-you d-d-don't w-want to d-d-do that," she says.

Champ is glad to meet Sho'va, and likes playing chase games with her.

Dietrich
Monday April 30th, 2007 11:04:50 AM

Dietrich enjoys the conversation with Jeraldh and assures him of the party´s friendship, but internally he´s not very happy at the news heard (which he´ll share with the party as soon as they meet again).

The knight trys to get some other information though (using the checks from before?):

"As you know, old friend, the situation in the City is very risky. IF people of good will don´t do anything, civil war may break out, with nefarious consequences for all of us.
In this times, one has to be prepared to put back his own immediate interests and support the common cause. But of course not without a compensation.
If only the friends of Dirt City could find a consensual candidate for the Palace?"

Other than that, Dietrich also trys to get some info about the incident with the murdered sailor from Aisildur.
"Strange, isn´t it, that the sailor was strangled just when he arrived here. Such a waste. I´m sure he´d have interesting news from distant places."

After the meeting, Dietrich makes some visits to the people that supported the party when they faced the Prince.
Dietrich suggests to them to form a "club", where they could eat and drink together, exchange ideas and practice their martial skills. Dietrich would be more than happy to teach them and he gladly pays for the beer and meat from his own pockets.

Theodore & Macaw
Monday April 30th, 2007 11:08:00 AM

Theodore returns to the ship with the news he has gleaned from Master Geoffrey.

"So, it looks like the same old situation. The Houses care for only themselves and the people are in the dark." He sighs and shakes his head. "I really hate politics."

He asks Berlon about the specifics of the ship and runs his hands along the railing in appreciation.

"I think we have a difficult decision to make. We keep the boat or sell it. If we keep it, we need to come up with a plan of protection against theft. I don't think keeping it docked here will deter too many. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a solution where it would be safe and I don't know how much of an asset it really is to us." He scratches his head and furrows his brow. "I mean, when do you think we'll be needing to sail somewhere in a changing ship."

He looks longingly at the ship's mast. "As much as I hate to say it, I think our best option is to sell it. Do you have any idea what something like this might fetch, Vauhwyt?"

On the topic of names, Theodore suggests a tentative vote, "Just to see what everybody is leaning towards. We can work from there. I like either the 'Ravens' or the 'Black Birds.' But I'm open to others."

Vauhwyt
Monday April 30th, 2007 11:34:38 AM

"Yeah, it really is too bad that we can't get it shrunk down even smallerr. But it would be perfect for a smuggler who wants to sneak up rivers in a small craft, then head out to sea safely."

"Frankly, I think we should offer it to our friend, Neezerr. This would be just up his alley. It's too big to carry into the Catacombs."

"Of course, we should also get a competing offerr, just so that we are less likely to get ripped off. I suggest we go see the Teeth. I volunteer for that," Vauhwyt says "Maybe a couple others should come with me to see the Teeth. Any one else?"

"This is also a great vessel for disguise work. If the government of Osto is looking for a longship, they won;t question a sailboat! I could totally make a great sales pitch for this boat! And keep in mind that a nonmagical longship is worth 10,000 gold and a nonmagical sailing ship is worth the same! This item should fetch at least 40,000 to 80,000 gold, I would think!"

[OOC to DM: Didn't you say that it required a certain condition to activate? Like being good or being a dwarf or having a high stat or something? What did that turn out to be?]

Vauhwyt
Monday April 30th, 2007 11:52:10 AM

Note that the time that Vauhwyt spends physically on the boat is directly proportional to her growing realization of the vessel's expected value. By the time she tells her friends that it could be worth 80,000 gold, she is on board 12/7! She won't go to the Teeth or anywhere unless two party members commit to staying on board while she is away.

Berlon
Monday April 30th, 2007 4:12:40 PM

Standing with Vauhwyt, Berlon frowns at the ship. He seems angry with it, as if it is intentionally not telling him something. "What kind of person makes a ship that can change forms but not change into a pouch or a mechanical monkey or something convenient like that?"

He scuffs his foot at the dock. "You can be sure if *I* ever made a magical changing boat, there would be a mechanical monkey mode, you can count on THAT!"

His tone changes when Vauhwyt talks about the item's potential worth. "Hmmm," he ponders, "that is certainly a tantalizing option. Once can never have enough resources, can one? But for now, I have some work to do in my lab, if anyone needs me, I will be there..."

(OOC: followup email coming shortly)

Vauhwyt
Monday April 30th, 2007 5:02:26 PM

Before Berlon can depart, Vauhwyt asks if he (or any other party member) can cast Detect Good and Eviul and Law and Chaos on the ship. And Detect Thoughts to see if it has a mind. And Deathwatch to know if it is alive.

"Too bad we don't have a bard. I bet there are legends and stories about this. But we can't affford to hire a gossipy bard -- not the gold, but the chance of word getting out."

She looks on the ship to see if it has a name in any form.

Clues? [SteveK]
Monday April 30th, 2007 9:44:34 PM

ooc: sorry for the lousy posting on my part last week, everyone!

For the boat, Berlon also discovered that the change must be done by someone who is an identified officer of the ship with a high degree of natural intelligence. (ooc: must have INT 16)

Vorelle and Champ seem to really like the new addition to the group. Wolf and dog actually seem to play almost too well together...

Dietrich felt that he was able to continue his conversation with Jeraldh. The pink eyes of Jeraldh seem to glitter when Dietrich hints at a political support the young man may bring. "I have always thought that whoever may be the Prince should continue the patronage of altruistic groups in the City."
With the mention of the sailor, Jeraldh grows thoughtful. "There is no animosity that I know of between any of the Houses and the heart-seeded ones of Alisidur. However, it does seem there are less travellers coming across the sea from Alisidur and the Tauric Isles both. I am sure the Teeth are most concerned, but perhaps the Merchants are being hit hard as well. Certainly," he continues with an artful frown, "Captain Darid is bringing in enough goods to grow in prestige and keep the House afloat."

Theodore speculates about selling the ship and names for the group.

Vauhwyt checks on various things about the boat, and over the days, she has been able to find out that it is no alignment, no intelligence, no thoughts, and not alive. Nope, just a boat. But getting an estimate from two sources seems like a really good idea...

Berlon has to conclude that there is no mechanical monkey mode to the boat. (ooc: LOL!! had to tell this one to my wife! :)

Oh, and there is no name on the boat, yet there is a panel on the bows and aft that look custom made for a name plate if you wish...

Dietrich
Monday April 30th, 2007 10:00:12 PM

After the conversations and strenghtening of good relationship, the knight leaves Jeraldh with a strong handshake and farewell.

He uses his free time to visit the above-mentioned supporters and friends of the party and to suggest the building of the club at his personal expenses. Just a community for self defense and exchange of information. (will do checks etc if there´re interested folks)

When he meets his friends again, Dietrich shares everything he got to know and listens to Theo´s infos too.

Concerning the boat, Dietrich first reaction is to be against the sell. He sees a good way of keeping the boat safe: He and maybe some other friends could actually live in it. We could even hire some hands and use it for adventuring trips and trade.
But when Vauhwyt mentions the amount of gold they can catch for it, Dietrich´s oppinion changes. If the party wants to sell it, he certainly isn´t going to oppose.

Oni
Tuesday May 1st, 2007 12:56:25 AM

Oni brings the wolf in to the city proper. Each day he casts a spell to communicate with Champ and Sho'va. While the 2 canies play, and explore the upper city, it gives Oni a better chance to get to know Vorelle, and Umbriel.

Umbriel had a good point. Oni knew the wolf had been acquainted with villages, he had met her outside one. Oni also knew the druids had gotten the wolves accustomed to people and their ways. It was probably why he had been able to summon her. As far as Dirt City below, he explained it was a life like a badger, mole, or mouse. That Sho'va, and Champ were to be admired for their oppurtunity.

To Vorelle he pleads for her to acquaint him with the lower city. As far as he was concerned he needed to travel there once.

Vorelle and Champ
Tuesday May 1st, 2007 1:05:24 AM

Back in the city, Vorelle seeks out the company of the rest of her friends. Safety in numbers.

She does not seek out her family. Whether they seek her out is another story...

No fan of boats, or water, or anything to do with leaving dry land, Vorelle is all for selling. She expresses support for Dietrich's club idea.

rose
Tuesday May 1st, 2007 2:55:42 AM

rose wishes as well that the boat could shrink more, but realizes that with no way of protecting it they need to sell it.

if vorelle even thinks about going to see her family rose will be with her. meanwhile since she has been reminded of them she will talk to her family about them. Rose's family likes vorelle and they and their friends can keep vorelles family from bother her.

Theodore & Macaw
Tuesday May 1st, 2007 10:28:36 AM

"Okay, then," says Theodore. He seems a little disheartened, as if someone might come up with a brilliant idea to salvage such a wonderful ship. "So, Vauhwyt is going to check into getting some offers on our ship. I'll go with you Vauhwyt. I won't be any help with the haggling, but I can surely keep you company."

"On the topic of names, I think we need to buckle down and figure one out. We seem to keep drifting away from the conversation. And I think we need to also discuss our next course of action. We should set a few hours aside to talk about such things."

Berlon
Tuesday May 1st, 2007 2:22:03 PM

Berlon strokes his beard like he always done when lost in deep thought. "High natural intelligence," he mumbles to no one in particular, "that rules out almost all the group and half the familiars..."

"No, no," he continues, changing the subject without warning, "we would be quite insane to sell this vessel," he says, rapping it with his hand. "Dietrich is quite right. We have to expand our way of thinking. With the vessel we can open a trade route, help defend the city from aquatic attack, lots of things. Why, when we go to Aisildur, we'll be able to..." he trails off suddenly.

"Besides," he continues, "just wait until I add Mechanical Monkey mode!"

"I have to go to my lab and draw up plans..."

Vauhwyt
Tuesday May 1st, 2007 2:59:42 PM

Vauhwyt goes to each party member (except the drow elf -- he's too new to have a say), and asks if the party should keep the boat or sell it, considering that it is not portable.

Berlon seems to think he can make it portable.

Vauhwyt's guess is that the vessel could fetch in the 30 to 70 thousand gold range.

She is in favor of selling. Everyone else?

Together Pow Wow [SteveK]
Tuesday May 1st, 2007 6:41:03 PM

The name for the group conversation has lapsed, and Theodore wants to nail that one down. "It's important", he argues. Vote #1?

The keeping or selling of the ship seems equally important for the near future of the group. Several members want to nail this one down, too. Vote #2?

Dietrich is able to get positive responses from several of thier past acquaintances for self defense club. No one who is a House member is interested, but the non affiliates feel it is a good idea, starting with the six members of Dietrich's bouncer team from the party and all three young men from thier recent journey aboard the Ghost Ship.

Umbriel Highlight to display spoiler: { 1- there seem to be no contracts currently on the group as a whole or any of its members.
2- about the 2 people killed at the party the week prior. The first killer was easily found out as a Grubber (poor trash who live above near the swamp) who argued over a girl. the Grubber's name is Sen. The second (the Alisidurian) is an unknown kiler, but Umbriel has found out that the cuts around the heartseed were made by a stone knife.
3- about the lesser amount of traffic coming from the tauric islands and asilidur. Seems that ships are being lost. An uncommon
number of independent and Merchant House-backed ships are being lost in the seas between
Alisidur, the Tauric Isles, and Dirt City. Most of the Teeth-backed ships
are still sailing, though some have gone missing as well. Ships sailing East do not have the same problem.
4- Umbriel also finds out that the sailor strangled on the sihp was NOT Alisidurian. He was from an independant ship and he was killed before the rescuing ship ever made port.
}

Oni speaks with Sho'va and learns a lot about his new companion. Seems that Sho'va was a scout and so not really tight with any pack in the woods. She feels kinship with the centaur and is willing to follow where he goes most times, even occasionally venturing into the City Below. Sho'va is equally capable of wandering off and not returning to Oni for a day or so. Yet if Oni ever needs her, the wolf seems to be just around the corner. "We are wolves", Sho'va first tells Oni, "we are Free People."

Vauhwyt
Tuesday May 1st, 2007 9:42:04 PM

The liontaur is a strong advocate for selling the boat. "Frankly, if we want to go a-sailing to Aisildur, like Berlon says, then we could sell this boat, buy a sailing ship, hire a crew, and still be several tens of thousands of gold pieces to the richer!"

"But I'm not convinced that Aisildur is the right place for us to go. For one thing, it is an evil place full of rude people who grow plants in their chests. Odds are whatever is plaguing them is something they deserve. Besides, they have Ashira's adventuring group to protect them, and Ashira and Appolo and Val and their friends are much more powerful than we are anyway. Maybe we should send them a message, or even go visit them, but let them deal with Aisildur, I say, and good luck to them."

"Besides, the City right here is troubled. This is the quiet before the storm. What kind of defenders are we to go gallivanting off to Aisildur when the City could erupt into civil war at any moment?"

"And even more, we have enemies closer to home, like those goblin tribes. Someday soon, my friends, it will be time to go a-hunting goblins, and the sooner the betterr, I say."

"So I say SELL the boat!"

"As for names, I do think we need one. We have a high profile and we don't know how to keep our heads down. So we might as well make a virtue of it and stand out. Dietrich's club for non-affiliates is a great idea. Especially if we make it a club that requires an oath to join. Something like a promise to defend Dirt City and protect innocents from harm."

"I bet the WLA might be interested in signing on as a co-sponsorr."

"But anyway, why don't we make a master list of all possible names. Then we can compile a list and rank them in order that we like them. The name with the most votes in favor is the one we pick. Okay?"

"Here are my contributions to the master list:"

The Black Bird Gang
The Def Enders
The Patsy Heroes

"Theo, Oni, you had some good ones. Vorelle, what was yours? Something about horses? Toss out your ideas, friends! The moment os on us!"

[OOC: My personal feeling is that even after we pick a name for the group, the name of the game and the board should stay "Dirt City."]

Vorelle, too, thinks a name is a good idea.

"W-w-we are u-unexpected. S-s-s-something the p-p-p-powerful d-don't see c-c-coming. Th-that's why I like D-D-Dark Horse."

Vorelle's suggestions:

Dark Horse Gang (or Guild or League, if "Gang" is too confrontational)
Dark Horse Defenders (tying in with the "defending" idea)

DM Highlight to display spoiler: { (1) I will continue with my investigations, in particular, the "stone knife" information. Is there any group who is know for using stone knives or perhaps that particular knife is their name, ie a faction inside the House of Knives or perhaps, the House of knives proper. (2) Also, what, if any, is the consequences for a heart seeded person being murded like this in Dirt City. ie, will an army from Ailsidur come knocking on the city's doors and expect retribution. }

After doing the rounds I will head back to where I last saw the others to see what's on the groups' agenda.

Vauhwyt to Umbriel
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 6:16:13 AM

When the drow reappears, Vauhwyt says to him, "Hey, our new friend! Umbriel, I know you said you think we should have no name. I used to think that too, and I thought we could keep a low profile. But that's impossible for us. We are too heroic."

Mookie caws in laughter. "Heroic! Boss, you kill me. I think I would have picked a different word!"

Vauhwyt smiles. "Well, you could argue for 'feckless' or 'loud' or 'obnoxious,' I guess!"

"Anyway, since we have a high profile, and since we would rather name ourselves than let others name us, what do you think, good Umbriel? Any ideas? Or at least rank your preferences after we get together the master list. Since you're one of us, now."

[OOC: In case anyone is wondering why she is being so welcoming to the newcomer, Vauhwyt is operating under the idea that Umbriel is Oni's friend or kin or something. She does NOT want the messy details of how you make a drowtaur -- two-legger mating habits have her mind reeling already -- but she figures that there has to be some drow in Oni's family tree, and this fellow must be a cousin or something. After all, didn't she see them talking as soon as the boat docked? And didn't they head off into the wilds with Vorelle for a couple days?

Also by the way, since Vauhwyt has not mentioned any of these thoughts, PLEASE do not spoil it for her by correcting her misconception. It's funnier this way.]

Dietrich
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 9:28:31 AM

Concerning the boat, Dietrich abstains his vote and will go with whatever the majority decides.
In any case, he´s strongly against going to Aisildur now, sharing almost all arguments brought on by Vauhwyt.

Concerning the name, Dietrich maintains his position of coosing a name.
But he strongly opposes choosing any "funny-creative" names if they give an impression of unreliability or challange to powerful actors.
He´ll vote for either "Black Birds", or keeping "Defenders", or "Peoples Defenders", whatever the party prefers.
But he 'vetoes' "Patsy Heroes", "WIld-anything" and similars.

Concerning politics, Dietrich agrees with Theo that it´s time for the party to discuss it. He finds it far more important than the name issue, actually.

Finally, he´s glad the club idea has been acepted.
But he doesn´t agree with the oath on defending the city. Dietrich just wants to have place for non-affiliated, common people to have a voice, ex-change ideas and increase their influence and strenght.

So, besides the bouncers and youths, he trys to get community leaders, grubbers, dockworkers etc interested.

Finally, the roguish knight carefully checks everyone interested in participating?
Takes 20 on "knowledge Dirt City", "sense motive", "diplomacy" and "intimidate" to discover peoples background and real interests.

If he discover spies though, he doesn´t hinder them from entering. He just registers the fact for himself.

Theodore & Macaw
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 11:53:32 AM

"I like the 'Dark Horse League' or even 'League of the Dark Horse' so I would go with that. I'll also offer up 'League of the Black Bird.'" Theodore seems quite smitten with the word, league.

"I believe we had all loosely agreed to serve as champions for the people of Dirt City as opposed to allying with any particular House. Correct me if I'm mistaken." Theodore's demeanor becomes serious. "Our intentions were to stay friendly with ALL Houses, but never to attach ourselves to any one House. In that aspect, I would support Jeraldh's run for Prince not for his relation to the House of Keys, but rather that he seems to have the City's best interests at heart."

He pauses a moment to allow others to think on this. "Assuming my feelings are shared by the rest of you, how would we best go about supporting Jeraldh's campaign knowing he needs the support of the other Houses to become the next Prince?"

The master list so far:

The Black Bird Gang
The League of the Black Bird

The Def Enders

The Patsy Heroes

Dark Horse Gang
Dark Horse League
League of the Dark Horse

Dark Horse Defenders

The Defenders
The People's Defenders

Keep 'em comin'!

Oni
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 4:04:12 PM

When Oni returns to the city he seperates from Vorelle and Umbriel. He takes his time investigating the city. Sho'va comes and goes at odd intervals. Oni figures it will take her time to leave her pack.

As far as Dirt City the loer, he enters for all of 10 minutes. He and the wolf do not like it at all, and so they leave. Now he had seen it, he was done with it.

After going to the Catacombs he returns with a thick hided set of studded armor. This replaced the breastplate he had worn. By lowering the weight on his body, one could tell he was less encumbered. The drowtaur had also given up his fancy horshoe, axe and bow. He now had a greatclub on his back and held a wicked shaped halberd.

Upon returning to the boat, he simply says, "I can guard the boat if you wish."

On the issue of what to do, Oni doesnt care one iota. Each day brings its own challenges. The name he sides with 'Dark Horse Guild'. No gang, no league, a guild. Why not have one guild alied with all the others he says. Sell the ship, he has no use for it. Use some of the proceeds, or all, for group needs. Maybe startup costs For Dietrichs Daek horse defenders dojo.

Berlon
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 6:55:12 PM

"Well," Berlon says upon meeting back up with the group, "the Mechanical Monkey mode is coming along slowly, but I do have some good news. Apparantly Neezer is pleased with us for whatever reason, and has offered to arrange mooring and protection for the ship while docked in the city. Does that change anyone's mind? I mean, it's not like we can't sell it later, right?"

Vauhwyt
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 7:34:28 PM

"Honestly, like Dietrich was saying, we have to be friendly with ALL the Houses. And TOO friendly with none!. I fear that we are getting too friendly with the merchants and Jeraldh's crew, and not enough with others."

"If the vote is to sell the boat, I'd be inclined to take the Teeth's offer even if it is slightly less than the Merchants'.

So Berlon votes to keep the boat. What about the rest. Come, friends, let's get voting and deciding.

Pow Wow 2 [SteveK]
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 11:19:31 PM

The Votes for Name and selling or keeping the boat are still outstanding, so Vauhwyt calls for further debate. It's voting time, folks!

The suggestion is out there to check on the Teeth and see what price they would give on the boat.

For the self-defense club, Dietrich finda out that community leaders aren't interested in the club, because the only ones considered as leaders of a community would be the Houses, and THEY certainly don't want to dilute thier authority! For the non-House affiliated communities...
- There is the WLA, which Dietrich knows many see as just a spy network for Elennia.
- There is the Temple of Wardd, who have tried to maintain complete neutrality in politics.
- There is the community of halflings that have seemed to have carved out thier own group.
- Grubbers are too loose of a group to be considered having a leader
- Then there are those formerly affiliated with the Prince. Of the ones that haven't been killed, fled, or signed up with a House, well, there may be some good seed there.

Oni
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 1:46:26 AM

Oni guards the boat while the others do their biddings. On the dock he practices whirling and twirling the halberd. It had a longer reach than he was acustomed to. He remeered seeing how the temple guards had worked the weapon. He tried to mimic that.

OOC-Refer to my post yesterday for my votes.

Dietrich
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 10:32:17 AM

Dietrich has already voted as above.

Concerning the club, the fighter is of course glad to have the bouncers and the youths. It´s a great start.
Still, the objective is not to create yet another segregate elite organization bound to the party, but, on the contrary, to have a much broader circle of contacts and supporters, so that the party may actually know what are the concerns of the common people they´ve decided to ally with. And also to have a channel of communication to influence their supporters.

With that in mind, Dietrich asks Rose to use their connections to get 'normal' halflings and city dwellers interested in this kind of forum/ self-help organization. He trys to motivate workers he´s worked with at the repairs of the city walls (ooc: Dietrich gained his carpentry and masonry skills by working side by side with common people on the city walls and has made some contacts there)

He also trys to make contact with former men of the Prince. Most were not affected by his madness and the party has had good relations with them.

Meanwhile, Dietrich is happy to straighten the bounds with the guys that showed interest. He´d suggest for the party to rent a cheap, large place, where they can meet, train, have some beer and food.

Finally, after listening to Theo and Vauhwyt, Dietrich says:
"I agree with you that we have to keep good working relations with all Houses. But staying independent doesn´t mean to stay neutral. We should throw our weight on the side we consider best for the city and the people.
Jeraldh is a friend, and he´s certainly better than to have a Wolf or a Teeth on the throne.
Also, I consider the Merchants to be a force of progress in the city, as they´re interested in peace and order to do their trade.
That said, I agree with pleasing the Teeth by selling them the magic boat (if we decide to sell it), but I agree with Theo that we should back Jeraldh or any other consensual candidate from the less agressive and powerful Houses."

Theodore & Macaw
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 11:45:27 AM

"I'm still for selling the boat. While I'm as interested as any other in magic - probably more than any other, actually - I can't see any practical use for the boat. Like Vauhwyt said, we can always rent a boat when we need one. Also, would we have to pay the Merchants for their protection of the boat?" This last part is directed at Berlon.

Theodore smiles as Vauhwyt ticks off the suggested names. "Vauhwyt, I don't think anyone's going for Patsy Heroes. I believe you can cross that one off. I'm also against anything with the Defenders in it. Too...blah. And it represents that we want to keep the status quo, which we don't. I'm also against Gang in our name. That suggests violence and bullying, which we shouldn't be associated with. So, my vote's for Dark Horse or Black Bird with Guild or League at the beginning or end. Either is fine."

Vauhwyt and the Boat Vote  d20+2=22
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 2:12:55 PM

Vauhwyt tallies the opinions of the group:

Dietrich: neutral
Vorelle: sell
Rose: sell
Theo: sell
Berlon: keep
Oni: sell
Vauhwyt: sell

Tide is pretty clearly for sell. So Vauhwyt (with Theo, right?) pays a visit to Neezer and then to the House of the Teeth.

Since she doesn't actually know anyone at the Teeth, she starts by going to the Blue Eel Inn, where the group has met before (and fought that assassin. Baback, or whatever his name was nearby). At the inn, she talks to the barkeep and does her best to find out how to get an appointment with someone in power at the House of the Teeth. She spends about 25 gold on drinks and tips to help grease the wheels. With any luck, she gets what she needs.

Untrained Local Knowledge: nat 20! Woo hoo! 22!

At both Houses, she makes the same pitch. She describes honestly how the group came by the boat. She describes its magical capabilities. She points out some of the selling points:

-- Flexibility: Flat-bottom form for rivers and to come ashore over reefs. Sailing form for ocean travel. Longboat form for rowing through the doldrums.

-- Disguise: When the officials of a nation or port are searching for a boat of one kind, you can sail safely in another form.

-- Capacity: Capacity: In Longship form it carries 50 tons of cargo or 120 soldiers. In Sailing Ship form it carries 150 tons of cargo. A Folding Boat can carry only 15 people. Plus the boat has a cunningly hidden secret cargo area.

She also discloses that the ship requires an operator who is very intelligent.

Vauhwyt says that her friends are soliciting bids from two or three potential buyers. The bidding will consist of a single closed private offer. Each bidder will make an offer, and Vauhwyt and her friends will select one. Note that the offer need not consist solely of cash. Offers that include friendship without strings, or promises of information, or other kinds of compensation, will be considered as well.

Most importantly, because Vauhwyt and her friends are committed to the well-being of Dirt City, any compelling argument that the bidder will use the boat to benefit all city citizens in a real way will be granted a lot of weight.

Now, considering that a nonmagic longship costs 10,000, and a nonmagic sailing ship costs the same, and if you look at the item as the equivalent of four to eight folding boats, Vauhwyt insists that any bid must start at 28,000 gold at a minimum. She thinks it is worth more like 70,000, but she requires a bid that is at least that high, to make sure that only serious bidders participate. Certanly, bid as much as you feel you can afford, or as much as it is worth to you, or (most of all) more than you think the other bidders will pay!

Vauwyt consults with Theo to make sure she is not missing anything.

Vauhwyt gives a deadline in the near future for making a bid, (a day or two) and then goes back to report to her friends.

Vauhwyt on Names
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 8:20:44 PM

"So friends, after our conversation, what do we think of these:

The Black Bird Band

The Dark Horse Guild

The Defenders.

Remember, this is a name that will stick with us for the rest of our lives. If you don't like it, speak up now! Personally, I do not like "Defenders," but if everyone else votes for it, I can live with it."

"Now's the time to say that you can live with these or not, and to offer any final candidates! Don't hold back, friends!"

One Decision [SteveK]
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 11:16:32 PM

As everyone except Berlon is set on selling the boat, feelers are sent out to the Merchants and Teeth for prices. The Blue Eel and 25gp spread about is certainly enough to bring in a weathertanned she-elf by the name of Seafoam. She and Neezer (from the House of Merchants) really ask similar questions. They both also insist to be able to bring an assessment team to verify the claims before making any offer.

The name game is up for a last round of talks with the three choices outlined by Vauhwyt (unless there is another suggestion?)

Dietrich looks for ways to increase the scope of his idea of a self-defense league.
- Agrim (the young man who was really attached to Olyn) volunteers that since he is talking a lot with the clerics at the Temple of Wardd, he can be a go-between with the group and the Temple.
- Dietrich suggests Rose contact the halfling community to offer them the choice to join. and Leo, and Sharif
- Dietrich has a great idea to have a sort of clubhouse, a place where people of various backgrounds can come together peacefully.
- Tad suggests to Dietrich that people are going to want to see that what the ex-mercenary says will be actually true. "Just take time, boss-man, and when the people see you are really telling the truth, more folk'll come by. It's not going to happen overnight.", he predicts.
- there isn't a guild or organization of wall builders (in fact, the walls are in a bit of a state of disrepair since the Prince left), but Dietrich is able to track down a couple of old companions. He gets cautious optimism from the masons; all promising to come by soon and see what Dietrich is doing.

In the political arena, Dietrich and Theo urge the others to agree to openly support Jeraldh for the Prince of Thieves. Is this another vote time?

Vauhwyt
Friday May 4th, 2007 12:25:08 AM

Vauhwyt feels strongly that to declare in favor of any one candidate is a big mistake. As soon as you declare for one, the others become enemies.

Plus, has anyone actually researched the others? How do you know Jeraldh is the best choice?

Vorelle
Friday May 4th, 2007 2:08:27 AM

Vorelle has a headache. It seems that ever since they got back, she has been urged to speak up, speak out, don't hold back!

Three of her worst things.

Grimly she tries to focus. Jeraldh had dealt honestly with the group, which probably put him ahead of at least half the field. Unfortunately, she has only the vaguest idea of what "fully supporting" a candidate means. She hopes it doesn't involve lots of talking.

"I-I-I'll s-support J-J-Jeraldh," she says softly.

About the group name, she says, "D-D-Defenders is a-alright, b-b-but k-kind of d-dull. B-B-Black B-Birds really includes l-less than h-h-half of us. It d-d-doesn't s-seem fair."

Dietrich
Friday May 4th, 2007 9:54:41 AM

After talking with lots of people, Dietrich starts the search for an appropriate place for the club.
It has to be City above, as the self-defense training will also include weapons.
It should have easy access to below, so that common people can get there safely.
It should have space and perhaps some facilities, like cooking places, furniture, a place to put the barrels of beer, salty meat etc.
It should be easy to defend.
It shouldn´t be too expensive.

Dietrich continuation; accidentaly hit the submit button  d20+7=14 d20+4=6 d20+4=14 d20+4=21 d20+4=17
Friday May 4th, 2007 10:03:35 AM

The checks for the above mentioned itens are as follows:
Local knowledge 14
carpentry 6; masonry 14;
military knowledge 21
diplomacy 17

Concerning the names, Dietrich votes for Black Bird anything (though Vorelle is right, it´s not something that really bothers him. The name is easely associated with the party and is neutral, which he likes.)
He´ll accepted the other names too. And he enphasizes again, that if people want to call the party 'Defenders', they shouldn´t be hindered.

Concerning politics, Dietrich actually agrees that the party should gather more information before deciding.
His first option is Jerald, for the arguments already discussed, but we shouldn´t rule out other candidates.

But Dietrich doesn´t think that supporting one candidate automatically makes you an enemy of all the others. Every House and influential actor is going to negotiate his support for some candidate, without necessarily incuring the wraith of all the others.
If the party sees that some candidates are worse than others, we should support the ones less harmful to the City, its people and ourselves.

Berlon
Friday May 4th, 2007 10:05:16 AM

"My understanding was that the Merchants were willing to sponsor docking and protection of the ship, free of charge," Berlon says in response to Theodore's question.

"The other thing we need to consider is that even if we find someone with both the means and the need for such a vessel, we would need to be sure who we are selling it to. We don't want to be responsible for a wave of piracy or even worse."

Berlon continues to abstain from the group name vote, as the gnome finds the concept odd: deciding what other people are going to call you.

"But!" he exclaims with a familiar mischievous grin, "there is one thing we haven't thought of yet."

He pauses dramatically.

"How much support do you think OUR candidate for Prince would get?"

As he finishes the last sentence, he gives Theo a slightly too rough pat on the back, knocking the young mage forward a half step. Berlon then beams a great smile at him.

Theodore & Macaw
Friday May 4th, 2007 11:39:26 AM

Theodore blushes a deep deep red. Almost purple, some might guess. It's quite obvious that Berlon's idea of the young wizard as Prince is seriously disturbing to him.

"Oh no. No, no, no! I would be a terrible, no horrible Prince. Surely, you jest, Berlon!" Theodore shivers violently, his eyes as wide as saucers. "I would...I would make a muck of things most assuredly."

It takes several minutes for him to regain his composure, after which he quickly moves on to the topic of names.

"So it looks like the breakdown is thus far:
Rose - Defenders
Vorelle - Dark Horse or Defenders
Dietrich - Black Bird or Defenders
Theodore - Black Bird or Dark Horse
Berlon - Abstain"

"I think we're about to wrap things up, but we need a bit more enthusiasm. This is what we'll be known as for the rest of our time together. I think it's important for all of us to give our opinion. Let's hear it!"

Vauhwyt
Friday May 4th, 2007 1:53:03 PM

I like "The Dirt City Dark Horse And Black Bird Defense League"!

"Seriously, either the horse or bird option works for me."

Oni
Friday May 4th, 2007 2:38:04 PM

Oni's head spins with all this planning of things that seem unimportant. His home nation had tribes, one born to it, one kept it. The Drow had houses, or as he seen it societies. Again born into it, stay in it. Here the choices were just that choices.

"If Theo declines the Princedom, maybe the commoner advocate Dietrich the Bear would be a good Prince. You all talk of alliances, but don't want to 'ally' with anyone. If we Put Dietrich up for Prince, would that help orhinder our goasl of being anonymous."

Not used to human contact, he also slaps Theo on the back. Maybe a bit to hard.

Black Bird or Dark Horse. league, guild, HOUSE, just not gang, heroes.

Vauhwyt
Friday May 4th, 2007 3:59:50 PM

Vauhwyt listens to Vorelle's objection that not everyone has a black bird. "That's true," says Vauhwyt.

"Let's see. Theo, Rose, and I all do. Vorelle and Oni could have them. Umbriel I don't know well enough -- what do you do, friend? Berlon and Dietrich, you could buy Serpentine Owls or they could have Giant Black Eagle mounts through the Leadership feat or take levels in a class that granted a bird friend or flyng mount."

"I think Dietrich would make a good paladin, with a black bird as his celestial mount!"

"All that said, we could also go for the Black Feathers. Each one of us could wear a black feather as an emblem."

Mookie says, "I like that ideas, Boss."

Vauhwyt says, "And I know where to get all the feathers we would need."

Mookie caws, "HEY!"

Narrowing Choices [SteveK]
Friday May 4th, 2007 10:54:42 PM

(ooc: will be the last post on talking. I'm going to have to move on to the module come Monday. :)

The names seem to come down to three;
- The Dark Horse Guild
- The Black Bird League
- The Black Feathers (new one by Vauhwyt)

Berlon and Oni put up thier interesting suggestions for the group to put up a candidate of thier own. Could it be Theodore? Dietrich? The suggestion is just wild enough to give a moment's pause.

Dietrich is ready to go looking for a place to headquarter his mutual aid society. With a specific set of requirements, he should be ready to get some good ideas.

Feelers are already out to the Merchants and Teeth to buy the boat. Each prospective buyer is wanting to visit the boat before giving a price.

Vauhwyt also suggests to gather background information on the other candidates. What are they like? Perhaps talking with Umbriel may get some answers. He seems trusted enough, keeps his ear to the ground, and certainly has been in Dirt City more recently than the returning heroes...

Highlight to display spoiler: { Umbriel doesn't find out any guild or person that uses a stone knife as a 'signature'. He does find one in a curio shop, and the owner says it was brought in by a gnomish merchant from the swamps to the west. "Some form of native art, ah expect."

Sunday May 6th, 2007 11:16:33 AM

rose is still very busy making items, after a full day of work she has dinner with her family and returns back to the apartment to hear a discussion on what the group name should be. Lounging in her rocking chair she says "well we cant be dark horse guild. None of us have horses and Umbriel is the only centaur among us and the only horses we ever owned got left in the swamp to be eaten."

In her off time when rose is with her parents she asks if any in the halfling community would like to learn self defense, talk about who the halflings support for prince, and what should be done with the magical boat.

when rose is at home she is busy using prestidation to clean the items in her bag of holding, she even takes everything out and cleans the bag inside and out. She makes sure all her clothes are mended, and if anybody wants to put stuff in her bag of holding they can as long as it's clean.

Theodore & Macaw
Sunday May 6th, 2007 9:30:15 PM

"So the standings, so far are,

Rose - Defenders
Vorelle - Dark Horse or Defenders
Dietrich - Black Bird or Defenders
Theodore - Black Bird or Dark Horse
Berlon - Abstain
Vauhwyt - Black Bird or Dark Horse"

Theodore shakes his head. "Well, this is getting us nowhere. That's 3 each for defenders, dark horse, and black bird. I think we're going to have to limit ourselves to one name each. No either or, just one name that we prefer and go from there."

"My vote's for Dark Horse. I think Black Birds are too limiting, and I still don't like Defenders."

Berlon
Monday May 7th, 2007 8:33:33 AM

"Yes, well," Berlon says continuing his conversation with Oni, "Dietrich would of course be the obvious choice, but he, ah..." The gnome pauses as he searches for the right words. "You see, sometimes, in the heat of the moment..." His voice trails off. "Sometimes Dietrich swears a lot."

"BUT!" he continues in a grand voice, "DID YOU KNOW that young Theo is a conjurer of great power? He once single handedly held of a pack of undead beasts in Marteus' realm! He unlocked The Mystery Of The Magic Boat! Once word of his brave deeds spreads, (by others, not by himself, for he is FAR too modest to speak of them) the populace of the city would find him a popular candidate, of this I have no doubt..."

He looks up, realizing he is monologing again. "I'm sorry. I'm just planning out the campaign strategy."

Umbriel
Monday May 7th, 2007 9:25:29 AM

Sits off to the side.
Listening to what everyone has to say.

It seems to me by listening to you all that it comes down to this. Some of you want some sort of "Defenders" for a name and some of you want either "Black or Dark" for a name.
Additionally, about the magic boat, why not see if it cannot have an additional enchantment added to make it small enough to fit into a portable hole or bag of holding? Seems to me that item would be a great asset to this group. Don't know how many times in my life I wished for something like that to pull out of a bag.
