Trouble on the Home Front

A Bumpy Arrival (DM Matt)
Monday April 23rd, 2007 9:03:51 AM

-and you suddenly feel a sharp jolt as you land unceremoniously on hard-packed earth. Grunts and exclamations of surprise are heard all around you as the refugees pour onto the ground.

Everyone is quite soaked. It seems that colorful pool was, in fact, an actual body of water after all. Oddly, though, the water has retained its multi-colored nature, and everyone has drops of red, green, and blue falling from their clothes. Fortunately, the water does not seem to be making stains.

Looking around, you see a familiar sight about 50 feet away - the mouth of a cave that you recognize as Arrak's lair.

--------------------------------------------
Hi all. Very excited to be DMing for this crew. I hope this module is fun for everyone. Feel free to email me anytime with questions, comments, etc. -Matt

Horvis [sub Marcin]
Monday April 23rd, 2007 9:23:23 AM

Horvis shakes off the after-effects of the magic journey. Now that the lands of danger are left behind his withdrawn and tight-lipped manner has returned. He moves about the group helping to carry those who are not in condition to walk by themselves.

Izen
Monday April 23rd, 2007 1:19:09 PM

Izen hung suspended in midair, his enchanted boots preventing him from hitting the ground with as much force as some of the others. The expression of distaste on his face told all anyone needed to know about his feelings on getting wet, though.

Lowering himself to the ground, Izen suggested, "Cut the others loose and let them go. Then let's take the elf to see the boss."

Jova
Monday April 23rd, 2007 3:28:57 PM

Standing from the pool of rainbow colors, Jova gawks. Weird, just weird. It seemed Z had done as Izen, and hadnt gotten wet.

Crawliong out of the soup, he assists the others.

Arien
Monday April 23rd, 2007 4:43:29 PM

Moments before hitting the water Arien manages to Wild Shape himself into a octupus. Once in the rainbow pool Arien swims towards the edge then, after pulling himself out onto dry ground resumes his normal shape.

Standing on the shore Arien motions to the cave and asks, "Shall we?"

Draax
Monday April 23rd, 2007 5:16:28 PM

Draax moves out of the water and uses a towel to wipe some of the wetness from his cloak and armor. Looking over at the refugees. "Let's get refugees comfortable before we talk to Lord Arrak. He might want to help them in some way before we send them on their way. I agree with Izen; only the elf should be allowed to accompany us into Arrak's domain without his permission."

Monthor
Monday April 23rd, 2007 6:02:15 PM

A very wet Monthor gets himself out of the water and onto some dry land.

" Well, there's me bath for this month. So, me pretties, are we off to see the wizard?... Me mean dragon.... Hey! Is that a yellow bricked road leading to the cave?

Juliander  d20+21=41
Monday April 23rd, 2007 8:00:23 PM

Juliander lands with a grunt, and pops up from the ground in a show of acrobatic grace. He glances over at Monthor with a smirk on his face, "Hardly counts as a bath good dwarf... unless you see bubbles. I don't see any bubbles." Juliander continues to shake himself off, and then assists with getting the refugees settled before proceeding toward Lord Arrak's domain.

Monthor sup...
Monday April 23rd, 2007 8:19:29 PM

ooc> Can't resist....

:: Monthor walks back into the water, gets an intense look on his face... and bubbles come up out of the water from behind him. Monthor grins and walks back on dry land. ::

" There are ye bubbles Julie. Happy now? "

Tratain
Monday April 23rd, 2007 10:21:14 PM

Tratain Helps any of the Refugee's out of the River that need it, and then says "I'll stay here with the refugee's and tend to them, the rest of you should go see Lord Arrak and see what he has to say."

Arrak's Lair
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 9:36:35 AM

After the group picks itself up and gets it bearings, you are able to settle the refugees into a moderately comfortable spot for them to await your return. Tratain stays with the group to help where he can.

The rest of you, and the elf, make your way into the cave mouth. You find yourself walking down a long, wide corridor. After a few moments, it opens into a finely appointed sitting room.

The room is exquisitely decorated, with tapestries and gold-framed paintings on the walls, pedestals holding seemingly ancient pieces of artwork, and soft, overly cushioned couches with golden scrollwork along their arms. Flanking a doorway on the far wall stand a pair of gnomes with trays in their hands.

As you enter, the gnomes usher you to the couches, and offer warm, damp towels and goblets of wine.

A few moments later, you hear a voice exclaim, "Welcome back, my valiant friends! It appears you've brought me another visitor as well, hmm?"

Looking up, you see a tall, handsome human standing in the doorway, wearing silk robes of white and gold.

Monthor
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 9:46:25 AM

Monthor the now wet dwarven killing machine drags himself in the lair with the others. Seeminly unimpressed with Arrak's current appearance, Monthor addresses him quite casually.

" ... we got this one and and a bunch of sick refugees outside Arry. You got anyone around here that can provide them with a meal and a warm bed? "

Draax
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 2:24:53 PM

He looks up at Lord Arrak, "This fellow, I believe he is a druid, calls himself Nightingale. We found him in a cage in a SoD structure. We figured we would bring him and the group of refugees we freed from the SoDs here. We thought you might have some questions for him and maybe them before we try to get them back to their homes and/or families. Speaking of helping the refugees get back to their lives. Can you help with that? I am not sure of your contacts and resources, but it is a whole lot more extent than what we have."

Izen
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 2:28:57 PM

Izen sat down on a cushion and fished out his copper coin, idly flipping it in the air.

"Got something that'll remove a curse?" he asked casually.

Jova
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 4:10:51 PM

Jova takes some food that the gnomes offer. Arrak welcomes them and Jova nods his head in assent. Feeling more at ease this time in the cave, Jova does more looking around. Admires the tapestries nd other art.

"Yes, Izen, the little fellow was cursed. Is there anything you can do? I would like to watch, maybe learn, so I can help if it ever happens again.

"Also, as the elf here will probably explain, they are researching poison. We have made them our enemies now. So we will need to know how they use this poison. You know, inhale, touch, or through an injury. So all help in that manne would be appreciated.

"Oh, here we are asking, asking, asking. How are you doing by the way? Your complexion looks great."

Juliander
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 9:14:08 PM

Juliander looks rather pleasantly upon the sitting room, considering their current state, and greets Lord Arrak warmly, "It is indeed good to be back my lord. We do indeed bring a great many visitors upon our return. It seems as though we met with success in our endeavor however." Despite the multicolored wetness that inflicts them all, the bard still manages to make that look good... on him at any rate.

Tratain  d20+16=25
Tuesday April 24th, 2007 11:01:25 PM

Tratain helps the refugee's where he can, he attempts to learn anything about what is ailing them that he can. (25 Heal Check)

Horvis [sub Marcin]
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 3:36:25 AM

Horvis rises an eyebrow surprised by the level of intimacy there seems to be between the dragon and the group. He stays in the background and is silent, but nods respectfully when the dragon's eyes pass over him.

Arrak's Lair (continued)
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 9:59:54 AM

At Monthor’s comment, one of the gnomes gasps and looks at Arrak. The transformed dragon makes a small motion with his hand, alleviating the gnome’s dismay.

“It seems we have much to discuss. A curse, you say? Let me see about that.” Walking over to Izen, Arrak places his hands on the halfling’s shoulders and mumbles a few words. Stepping back, he looks Izen up and down and says, “There. That should take care of that little issue.” [cast remove curse]

“Now, about these refugees. You did well bringing them out of that forsaken place. You are correct, I do have the means to bring them safely to their homelands. Leave them here when you go, and I will see to their safety, once I ensure they will not remember where ‘here’ is. Do not bring them inside the cavern, though. Maya!” he says to one of the gnomes standing nearby. “See that those outside are brought food and refreshment.

“And this one,” Arrak continues, looking at Nightingale. “So you’ve been poisoning people, hmm?” Nightingale looks up, seemingly terrified. “N-no sir! Well, yes s-s-sir, but n-not of my own w-w-will. Th-they capture me, and f-f-forced m-me to make the poison! I did n-not want to!”

“Calm down elf, and answer their question. How is the poison used?” says Arrak.

“Th-they have to eat it, lord. It is put into the f-f-food f-for the prisoners,” replies Nightingale, lowering his face.

“Hmmm . . . this one will need to be questioned further. Leave him with me, and I will see what information he may have.

“But on to more happy topics. You say you met with success on your mission? Tell me what you’ve found.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, outside, Tratain busies himself with checking over the refugees. After examining a few of them, he realizes there is a problem. He cannot tell exactly what the poison was that the refugees ingested, but he can see they are getting worse. In the time since the refugees were taken from the swamp, each of them appears to be suffering more ill effects by the minute. Without a remedy of some sort, it looks as if these people will not last much longer. You estimate a day or less.

After a short time, 4 gnomes come out from the cave entrance, carrying bread, cheese, and skins of water, and proceed to pass them among the refugees. One of the gnomes turns to Tratain. "I am Maya, sir. If there is anything you need, please simply ask."

Draax
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 7:44:38 PM

Draax pulls out all the magical coded journals and the coded letters and place them on the table. He also hands the partial coded message, making sure that the letter it was being coded from is with it.

"Here are some coded magical journals we stole from their place and a partially translated letter. If you cannot magically translate the text, you should be able to use the partially translated message to figure out the code. From the translated letter, I would guess that P.C. is Plateau City, but that is just speculation."

Draax waits for the others to add their comments.

Juliander
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 7:58:57 PM

"I can only hope that the journals will answer your questions more sufficiently then we can. However, for our part, we found the Sons lair and routed them out of it." Juliander speaks in rather sober tones.

Horvis
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 9:29:30 PM

The centaur watches as the transformed dragon questions his companions. Horvis could, if he chose, provide some answers but he has never met Arrak before. After Juliander and Draax speak, the shifter does so.

"We reached the stronghold of the Sons of Dread inside the Dreadlands, meeting and being assisted by some of the guardians of the portals. Once we scouted the stronghold, we entered and defeated those inside. One escaped, though."

"The journals mention the coming of the Circle, whoever they are. Do you know anything of them?"

Monthor
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 10:23:43 PM

" Oh, and we torched the place too. "

Jova
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 10:31:11 PM

"Oh," Jova seems to break out of some sort of trance.

"Yes Lord Arrak, Horvis reminds me, we came across a druid named Foxx. He helped use the druid traveling system. I really don't know much about it, just went along. Maybe you could thank him as well.

"Yes, and one glich. We killed a giant. Seems this giant was some leader placed in charge by Foxx, and some dwarf, Stonethrower, or something like that. Anyway they had given him a helm that changed him from evil to good. We came across the scene of what seemed a siege of a fort. The giant leader seen us, and ordered his giants to attack us. We killed the leader.

"After finding out what we had done, we all felt ashamed. Tratain especially so. I have no idea if you and your network can solve that issue, or if it is of any import. But for the good we accomplished, mistakes were made."

Tratain
Wednesday April 25th, 2007 11:16:29 PM

Tratain says to the gnome "Do you have any clerics available? There is something wrong with these people, they have gotten much worse since we got here."

Arien
Thursday April 26th, 2007 3:00:16 AM

Arien does not have much to add beyond what has been said and so waits to see Arrak's response.

Arrak's Lair (continued)
Thursday April 26th, 2007 10:34:03 AM

Arrak listens to the group give their descriptions of their journey. He smiles brightly. “Routed them? Burned it down? Wonderful, just wonderful!” he exclaims. “I am not one to seek violence as the answer to all problems, but some beings, like these Dread scum, deserve no better reward for their actions than what you provided.

“That is a strange tale you tell about the giant. To be quite honest, the trials and tribulations of a single fort, or a single giant clan, are of little interest to me. I must expend my resources on things of larger import. But, if you truly feel guilty, I will gladly provide what resources I might spare should you ever decide to make things right.”

As Draax lays out the various coded documents and journals, Arrak appears overjoyed. “This, now! This is even better than I had ever expected! Ahh, I nearly cannot wait to examine these. I expect they will provide much in the way of useful information. I cannot begin to thank you, friends, for the service you have "” he stops speaking and looks at Horvis as if something just registered in his mind.

“Did you say the Circle? If the Circle is involved, you are all in some danger. Let me see the entry you speak of.”

Arrak reviews the uncoded entry, then looks up at the group again. “Yes, I believe P.C. does refer to Plateau City. And the Circle. They are a group of ruthless assassins. I have heard of them on a few occasions. Very expensive, very talented. It is rumored they have never failed a mission. If this ‘adventuring group’ noted here is you . . . well, I fear you may be their next target.

“The question remains, though: how did anyone learn of your mission in order to retain the Circle’s services?”

----------------------------------------------
Outside, the gnome looks over the refugees with a none-to-comfortable look on her face. “Sick? Is it . . . catching?” she asks as she takes a step back. “Let me inform the master, he will know what to do more than I.” With that, she runs quickly back into the cave.

Thanks ADM Joe. Be sure to email that it is done when it's late please.

And don't be late again, or ::ahem:: nasty curses may begin hitting this game. ;)

Try me!

Juliander
Thursday April 26th, 2007 8:28:15 PM

Juliander looks dumbfounded, and for once silences rules his tongue, when he learns that he is to be the target of some "never yet unsuccessful" band of assassins.

Horvis
Thursday April 26th, 2007 9:40:39 PM

The centaur looks around at his companions when Arrak asks about how the Sons of Dread may have learned of their coming.

"Did we mention our destination to anyone? When we passed through the city and were looking for a guide, maybe? Or ... do you suppose it was one of the druids?"

Monthor
Thursday April 26th, 2007 10:07:48 PM

" These Circle orc lovers will come after us will they?... Maybe we should be going after them first then? "

Izen
Thursday April 26th, 2007 10:31:59 PM

ooc: Rats! Missed a post!

Izen shrugged and sighed as the dragon's spell removed the curse that had plagued him.

"Thanks," he commented. Then, he added casually, scratching at his stubble, "It's a cinch you've got a snitch in your operation ... my Lord."

Draax
Friday April 27th, 2007 1:33:41 AM

Draax looks at Lord Arrak and says, "It would probably depend on when they learned about us and if they have any idea about our association with you. The two to three weeks expectance timeline could give us a clue at the time the letter was written, but I do not know how much time the traveling by the druid's tree saved us, so I cannot calculate a timeframe. It was obvious that we arrived before they expected us. Anyway, they already know that he failed to stop us, so I guess this assassination group will be after us soon if they are not already.

I agree with Monthor about taking it to them. If we have or can get any information on them, lets do it. Why should we be the only ones looking over our shoulders?"

Arien
Friday April 27th, 2007 1:48:51 AM

"Well I would suggest a little caution, we hardly know anything about these assassins. I say that barring any further requests from Lord Arrak," Arien bows slightly in Arrak's direction. "That we return to our property in Plateau City and do our research there as to the manner of this band."

Jova
Friday April 27th, 2007 5:07:14 AM

Jova looks at izen as he proposesa spy in the Dragons network. here were actually many ways enemies could know of them. The group of travelling minstrels who played the trick on them for instance.

"Could be powerful scrying as well. Especially if more than the Sons are after us."

Arrak's Lair (continued)
Friday April 27th, 2007 10:23:44 AM

Arrak looks at Izen and nods his head. "It very well could be, my boy. We do not know."

Turning, he looks at the remaining gnome. "Bring Silvi to me," he says.

Just then, the female gnome who had left to see to the refugees returns, huffing and puffing. "Lord, the big man outside says the poor folk are getting sicker. Whatever will we be doin' about them?"

Arrak's face turns dark, and he rounds on Nightingale. "Speak quickly, druid, or the dwarf," he points at Monthor, "will be asked to assist your tongue with his axe. What do these people need to survive?"

Nightingale almost faints as he glances between Arrak and Monthor, and stammers, "A-a-a-antidote, Lord! Th-they gave th-th-them antidote daily to k-k-keep the p-poison at bay! Th-the prisoners need their dose!"

Arrak considers this for a moment, then says, "Maya, take this elf to the laboratory. No, don't worry, he's too terrified to hurt you," he adds as the gnome named Maya beings to shake. "He is going to see about making some of this antidote until I can properly see about those men and women. Go." He pushes Nightingale roughly towards the doorway and turns back to the group.

"I believe you are right, it is time for your departure. I will have your reward brought out. But, if you will wait a moment for Silvi, she may know a bit more about your . . . situation. She ever keeps her ears to the ground, so to speak."

After a moment, a few gnomes enter with heavy chests. Opening them, the gnomes show you bars of silver and electrum. You wonder how the gnomes knew the moment they were expected.

As the chests are closed, you notice another gnome leaning against the wall by the doorway. She is a bit tall for a gnome, lean and muscular as well, with long, dark hair and nearly black eyes. A pair of hand crossbows hangs from her hips, and a belt of small daggers is set diagonally across her chest.

"Ahh, Silvi my dear," Arrak says. "It seems my friends are now targets of an assassination. Come, sit and tell them what you can of the Circle. You remember them, yes?"

The Gnome moves toward one of the couches. She has a slow, graceful movement seemingly incongruous with her short stature.

"And Silvi, one other thing. We need to know how the Sons of Dread learned of the mission, in order to alert the Circle. Could we have a spy in our midst?"

Silvi lounges on one of the couches. Looking around at the group, she says, "My Lord has probably told you as much as I know. But, I do know one who can tell you more. In Plateau City, there is a dwarf named Heidgolm. He is a drunk and a brute, but I know from past . . . encounters . . . that he is familiar with the leader of the Circle, a man named Drellus. Beyond that, I cannot help.

"Now, Lord, as for a spy, this is an interesting coincidence. Both Argen and Len are missing right now. I know you sent Len to procure some alchemical mixtures for you, but he is days overdue. There is no explanation for Argen's absence. As you can see from my attire, I was just setting out to look for them. Is either, or both, a spy? I cannot say. But an interesting coincidence, as I noted."

As she finishes, she winks at Izen, then looks back at Arrak awaiting another question.

Jova
Saturday April 28th, 2007 12:57:31 AM

Jova expresses his gratitude to the Lod Arrak for the grand treasure. He listens intently to the young woman, and her talk. She had the look of a smuggler type. Seemed answers were to be found in Plateu City.

Horvis
Saturday April 28th, 2007 10:19:41 PM

The centaur looks back and forth between the treasure and the transformed dragon. Really, Horvis wasn't expecting this degree of remuneration.

Horvis looks over at the tall gnome. He clears his throat and asks Silvi some direct question.

"How many are in the Circle? And what skills or abilities might they bring against us?"

Arien
Sunday April 29th, 2007 6:16:28 AM

"Well considering that we are likely returning to Plateau City, we'll be sure to look him up." Arien responds while mentally filing away the dwarf's name.

Draax
Sunday April 29th, 2007 6:21:07 AM

Draax waits for Silvi to answer the other questions before asking a few of his own. "How close is this Drellus character to the leader of the Circle? Can we approach him openly or do we need to confront him in private? Do you have any idea how cooperative he will be with us; will he give the information freely, do we need to bribe, should we let him and Monthor drink each other under the table, or should we beat the information out of him? And where can we find this fellow?"

Monthor
Sunday April 29th, 2007 9:32:42 AM

Monthor hopes that the dragon will be offering them something to drink before the go... but otherwise remains silent at this time.

Tratain
Sunday April 29th, 2007 11:45:21 PM

Tratain continues to tend to the refugees until they seem to start getting better.

Juliander  d20+15=29
Monday April 30th, 2007 12:15:34 AM

Juliander attempts to get a feel for whether or not Silvi is speaking the truth, but is otherwise silent, taking in all of the information regarding the dwarf Heidgolm, and his connection to the man named Drellus. (OOC: Sense Motive DC 29)

Draax/Stan
Monday April 30th, 2007 12:50:15 AM

Arrak's Lair (continued)  d20=7
Monday April 30th, 2007 9:51:26 AM

With a nod from Arrak, Silvi clears her throat and answers some of the questions.

Looking to Horvis, she says, “How many? Drellus is rumored to have many employees, though he doesn’t use them all in one strike. In fact, it’s likely they aren’t all in Plateau City. He maintains a fairly large network, and has some agents in every major city. As to how many he might send against you lot?” She looks each person up and down. “Quite a few, unless I miss my guess. He’s not so dumb that he wouldn’t size you up right and good beforehand.”

To Draax, she says, “Heidgolm? He and Drellus used to work together, I’ve heard. But when Drellus started doing murder for hire, Heidgolm walked away. He's a decent dwarf, and didn't care for what Drellus was doing. I’d be careful talking to him. You always have to deal with Heidi delicately. And don’t call him Heidi to his face, he hates that. Though it’s well you mention drinking and fighting. Those are two things that seem to go hand in hand with old Heidi. Good luck to ya if you think you’ll get around that with him. You'll most likely find him in Shanty Town. He tends to drink there . . . alot.”

Juliander studies Silvi closely, and gets the feeling she is being honest in her answers, if not entirely forthcoming. She doesn’t strike you as the kind of person who is forthcoming with anyone, except maybe Arrak.

After the questions are answered, Arrak clears his throat. “Thank you, Silvi. Now, you had probably be on your way if you’re to locate our missing friends. Oh, and Silvi? If either of them turns out to be . . . less than loyal . . . I want him back here alive. I will want information, and so will my friends here. None of that business like in Dirt City this time, understood?”

Silvi hesitates a moment, then nods her head with a sigh, and leaves the room.

Turning back to all of you, Arrak says, “Well then. You have your remuneration, and you apparently have your work cut out for you. I assure you, if one of my helpers is at fault here, he won’t escape my justice, or yours.

“If there is nothing else then? I will care for the refugees, and deal with the druid. And as soon as I know anything of these Dread communications, I will share it with you as well. If you would like any sort of refreshment or rest before leaving, you are my honored guests. Otherwise, I bid you farewell, and hope I will see you again soon.”

------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, Tratain does what he can to care for the refugees. He succeeds in making them a bit more comfortable, and it looks like some of the color has returned to their faces, at least temporarily. The female gnome comes back outside, and after a slight bow, says, “My Lord has ordered that awful elf to make some sort of antidote. He thinks these people will be just fine, and he will provide some more permanent healing to them soon enough.”

Izen
Monday April 30th, 2007 9:51:40 AM

Izen smiled and inclined his head respectfully in response to Silva's wink--an acknowledgment of a professional peer.

"My Lord," Izen addressed the dragon. "It seems to me that if we go seeking these missing servants of yours, we're just as likely to find this Circle as any other way. Is it your will that we accompany Silva, or may we serve your pleasure in some other way?"

Arrak's Lair (addendum)
Monday April 30th, 2007 9:57:05 AM

sorry, posted at the same time as Izen

Looking to Izen, Arrak responds, "No, Silvi tends to work alone. With all due respect to each of you, I'm not positive you could even keep up with her. She'll make herself known, if she thinks it's necessary.

"I would suggest you begin by dealing with the immediate threat. After that, it may be that Silvi has found the traitor, or you may find the information you need while doing so.

"If you do locate the traitor, and it is one of my people, bring him to me, and I will compensate you handsomely."

Izen (Second)
Monday April 30th, 2007 10:01:08 AM

Ooc: first post overlapped with DM's!

Izen frowned as he listened to the dragon's words. The coin he had been playing along the backs of his knuckles stopped abruptly.

"But--my Lord surely has another assignment for us ...." he said, almost suggestively, perhaps even hopefully. Suddenly the cocksure, swaggering rogue seemed little better than a nervous puppy about to be assigned to its crate.

He stood stiffly as the others readied to leave and bowed to their host, before exiting with the others. His expression was blank, and a little pale, as he looked out over the mounatin ridges outside the dragon's lair.

Edit by Kup: LOL! We've got to stop doing that! Okay, Izen gets it--go to Plateau City, find Heidi. Sounds like fun.

Juliander
Monday April 30th, 2007 8:24:07 PM

Looking toward Monthor, "Pffft... drinking and fighting huh?... Looks like you get to talk to him Monty." Juliander's grin is quite evident as he plays games with the dwarf's name and then skips out of the room to make preparations for the hike to and through Plateau City.

Monthor
Monday April 30th, 2007 8:45:33 PM

" Sounds right to me Julie.... wait, did you just call me 'Monty'?..... FINALY! Someone with a sense of humor!!!! "

"BWA HA HA HA HA!!!!!... 'Snort' "

" Yer right Julies, me and old Heidi are gonna have us some fun! Hey Arry, about a couple ales for the road? "

ooc> BTW fellow Grey Knight-ians, the Catacombs transaction has been completed.

Monday April 30th, 2007 9:41:23 PM

The centaur shoulders his packs and helps with toting the chest. There are times when being built like a large plowhorse is worthwhile. Besides, Horvis has learned some new forms lately and can always shift into another form if he gets bored.

Still, from the sounds of things, the Knights will be heading to Plateau City. Not exactly Horvis' favorite place, but he can make do there.

"So, when do we get on the road?"

Draax
Monday April 30th, 2007 10:32:36 PM

Draax nods his head to Silvi as a gesture of thanks for her explanation. To the Knights he says, "I will need to check up on our estate while we are in town and see if the family that is taking care of the place needs anything. You guys that are new to the group are welcome to make it your home for as long as you are in the Knights. If you are interested, each of you can pick out a room when we get there. Horvis, you can have a room too if you are willing to transform into a two legged humanoid when inside the house. Or we can have part of the stable modified into living quarters if that is to your liking."

Tratain
Monday April 30th, 2007 10:54:46 PM

Tratain Meets up with the others and catches up on the conversation. He asks Lord Arrak "Have you heard of anyone by the name of Allhandra? Or something to that effect? We found out from what looked to be a wizard that that is the name of the person that recruited them and sent them to the Son's of Dread."

Tratain continues "If we are all done here, lets head back. We can start out walking today, and tomorrow I can Cast Windwalk on us to speed our travel back Home."

Jova
Tuesday May 1st, 2007 1:15:05 AM

As the others begin their departure, Jova holds back a little. When he can catch Arraks eye, he motions he wants to talk in secret.

If the Dragon decides to talk to Jova he will ask about the teleportation device. How it was made. He tells the Dragon he gts his spells through the use of the mind and not the use of spellbooks. He asks if there is any way the Dragon can impart the knowledge to him.

Arrak's Lair (continued)
Tuesday May 1st, 2007 8:39:21 AM

At Monthor's request, Arrak snaps his fingers and the remaining gnome runs off, appearing a few moments later with a tray, laden with mugs. The Gnome walks to each person and offers them a drink before they leave.

"Allhandra? That name . . . I cannot place it, though I'm sure I've heard it before. I must think on this as well."

Looking to Izen, Arrak replies, "Worry not, my friend. I will indeed have further work for you as soon as I can decipher the messages and journal entries of the Dread. But, it seems best to dispose of the current threat in any case. I can't imagine you'd want to raid another enclave of the Dread while a team of assassins was threatening your back."

As the group begins to depart, Jova holds back a moment, and Arrak walks quietly to his side.

Arrak smiles at the comment, and says, "Alas, if I was able to impart the knowledge, I would do so. It is a very complicated and limited magic, and one almost beyond my own capabilities to understand. It creates a form of teleportation keyed to a specific location, though more than that even I cannot fully explain it.

I do, however, have another small trinket I could give you, now that you bring the subject up. A small charm, shaped like a dragon and wrought of gold. Rub it's eye, and it will allow you a few moments of communication with me, no matter where either of us are. Only I and the speaker will see or hear anything, though others will hear you talking of course, as if to no one. It should have two uses left in it. Unfortunately, I was forced to expend one of those uses to learn its function and key it to myself. I'll have it fetched for you."

Arrak walks over to his gnome retainer and whispers something to him. The gnome runs off again. As the group is walking out of the cavern, the gnome comes puffing up behind them, and with a bow, hands something shiny to Jova. It appears to be a small dragon, posing from the side and made entirely of gold except for it's eye, which is a bright emerald. It is attached to a leather thong long enough to hang from someone's neck.

Juliander takes the drink from the gnome, thanking him, and finishes it in one draw. He then replaces the mug back to the tray, and has that ready, expecting to leave soon, look on his face.

Horvis
Tuesday May 1st, 2007 9:25:53 PM

The centaur is ready to travel but he's not entirely sure where he is. Horvis joined with the Knights after they received their commission from Arrak, and he hasn't been to the dragon's lair before.

Izen
Tuesday May 1st, 2007 9:27:30 PM

As the dragon lord spoke comfortingly, Izen's momentary lapse of composure was replaced by his usual, sardonic demeanor once more. Still, he acknowledged Arrak respectfully and inclined his head.

"To Plateau City, then, and to defeat the Circle," he agreed, and bowed. "My lord."

He awaited the others--how, precisely, they intended to get to Plateau City from the dragon's lair was something for the others to determine.

Draax
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 12:30:09 AM

Once they are outside of the lair, Draax says, "If Arien can, I would prefer that he teleport us directly to our home. That way we can enter the city without being seen. If he cannot do the teleport today, we can retrace our steps as we walk and let him can do the teleport tomorrow or if someone wants to stop somewhere before PC, we can let Tratain cast Windwalk."

Draax waits to hear which mode of transport it will be.

Jova
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 12:59:50 AM

Jova tucks the proffered necklace into his pack. Then he is silent. Had he the choice, he would stay and learn whast he could from the dragon.

Silently hefollows the others.

Monthor

Monthor drains his last drink and nods at Draax's suggestion.

" Works for me. "

Start of the Journey
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 8:37:41 AM

The group takes its leave from Arrak and heads outside, discussing options for traveling to Plateau City.

As you exit the cave, you see a number of gnomes tending to the refugees, and a few are walking through the motley group with large bottles of a greenish liquid, pausing for each person to take a long swig.

As the group discusses plans, there is talk of teleporting, and a few mentions of traveling overland.

-------------------------------------
For anyone who isn't sure where you currently are, Arrak's lair is on the Second Plateau, in the Monster Preserve/Blackheart Woods. Draw a line from Wellogy (northwest) and Hoomwix (southeast), and you are about midway along that line, a bit south of the Brink. Middleden is nearby to your east.

Juliander
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 6:45:01 PM

"Your reasoning is sound Draax... I concur. If we can teleport, we should do so."

Horvis
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 9:27:53 PM

The centaur resigns himself to teleporting. It wouldn't take too long, really, to get to a nearby road. And Horvis remembers how travel on the roads was enhanced.

"Either way, I'm ready to travel. Teleporting would get us to Plateau City earlier, and that might throw off the plans of the Circle."

Draax
Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 11:21:35 PM

While waiting to see how the group will be traveling, Draax watches the gnomes give the greenish liquid to the refugees.

Arien
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 1:15:17 AM

"Well give me some time to memorize the spell enough times to make sure that we can all make it in one day, including the mounts. But yes I'd be willing to teleport us back. In fact incase we need to return here some time I am going to study the area should no one object." Arien waits a moment to see if anyone does object then finds a likely spot and starts studying the area.

((OOC: There are some issues going on with my ISP right now, I hope to have them resolved by tommorow but I can't garauntee that.))

Izen
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 1:33:00 AM

The halfling made use of the time that the wizard was using to study and prepare to create simple snares for small game (Take 20 on Trapmaking). Could come in useful if the group fancied some fresh grilled food for the evening.

Jova
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 2:11:28 AM

Jova does as Arien does. He is 'wonting' for the teleport spell. Maybe if he thought about it enough, it would come to him. His magic worked that eay, most times.

"Knights, it may be good to take a little time to plan our tactics. I see 3 ways of approaching our dilemna.
1] Honesty. We search out the dwarf and ask for information.
2]Pretend. We pretend to want to hire the Circle for a job.
3]Infiltrate. We tell the dwarf we want to joing the Circle.

"I am sure we can think of other scenarios. I would like to all be of like mind before we encounter the dwarf though."

Walking over to Tratain, "Lord Arrak gave me this. You should take it, I have a tendency to get hurt. He said if you rub the dragons eye, you will be able to talk to him no matter where you or he is at. Only one use remaining though."

-2 uses remaining. I had meant there were originally 3, and Arrak used 1. I just reread my post and noticed how unclear that was, sorry. -M

Monthor
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 8:13:39 AM

To Arien

" Take your time Ari. Me'll go get us some more beer. "

To Jova

" A like mind we need but don't forget that Heidi's a dwarf. He drinks, he fights, and once his word is given it's his bond. Me says, let me deal with him. Me'll chat him up. Out drink him, out fight him and then he'll tell what we need to know. "

Planning
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 9:35:00 AM

The group lounges outside of Arrak's cavern, in the clearing. Off in the distance, you can hear birds chirping in the woods. Shadows are just starting to fall across the area. It isn't getting too late yet, but with the trees surrounding you, even mid-afternoon can start to look like evening.

The gnomes have finished providing for the refugees, all of whom look much better now. Tratain can see that they no longer have that soon-to-be-dead appearance, although none look like fit specimens yet.

Maya, the female gnome who had attended Arrak, stops by with a few of her assistants. "I see you all aren't leaving just yet then? If you would like any refreshment, we would be happy to provide it. Beer, you say?" she says to Monthor. At a snap of her fingers, one of the gnomes runs off into the cave, only to appear a few minutes later with another tray full of mugs.

Once everyone has received any food or beverage they request, the gnomes step off to a reasonable distance to give you sufficient privacy.

Juliander
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 8:40:42 PM

"I agree with Monthor in how we should interact with the dwarf... however, once we have whatever information he is willing to give.. I'd much prefer the infiltrate route when dealing with the Circle proper."

Tratain
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 9:43:37 PM

Tratain accepts the Dragon Statue with a thanks and puts it in his haversack.

He says "Lets ask Arrak to put us up of the night and then we can teleport home tomorrow, that way we'll be rested and safe. Then we let Monthor Deal with the dwarf and find out what we need to know."

Draax
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 9:44:51 PM

"Sounds like a plan to me."

Horvis
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 10:06:05 PM

The centaur watches and listens to the discussion among his companions. When talk turns to infiltration, Horvis speaks up.

"When it comes time to infiltrate, I'm reasonably skilled at such things. If nothing else, I can carry all sorts of gear and equipment into a guarded place for you."

"Now, though, could you tell me what I need to know about them? I might be able to pull off an impersonation if I have a general idea of who I'm supposed to be."

Izen
Thursday May 3rd, 2007 10:07:47 PM

Izen sighed and started walking back toward the dragon's lair. It appeared that they were going nowhere.

Jova
Friday May 4th, 2007 3:16:07 AM

"I do feel that Monthor is more than well equipped to handle the business with Heidi. One thing I think should be considered. Again I am looking at this from the point of view, what would I do if I were a member of the 'Circle'

"On that note, I figure i would have someone warching Heidi. It could be an actual member, or a snitch. And maybe there is noone watching, but I would err on side of caution. Besides Izen, who has the ability to watch others? We may find out more about the Circle by watching those around Heidi.

"What I propose, is 2-3 groups of us enter this tavern. All act seperately. I for one have the ability to gab, storytell, get peoples attention. I can create a diversion, before, during, or after Monthors brawl. If the Circle is watching, I'd assume the watcher would leave to snitch on us near or at that time.

"Again, I have acted both ways before. Z and I have made a few gold coins with the bluff. We have also caught spies."

Planning (continued)
Friday May 4th, 2007 9:59:15 AM

The day marches on as the group continues to plan. The sounds of songbirds slowly fall off as evening approaches, and you see gnomes scurrying about, trying to set up some sort of makeshift camp for the refugees.

If anyone inquires, there is room for the group to sleep inside, and the gnomes will put everyone up comfortably and provide food and drink as requested.

Arrak does little more than to stop by for a quick greeting, explaining that he is already deeply immersed in deciphering the dreadscript, and that he may soon have more work for you in that area.

You have plenty of time to rest and plan as you see fit.

------------------------------------
Everyone take today, and the weekend, if desired, to discuss where you'll be traveling/teleporting to, etc. I won't be posting again until Monday, but I'm available via email.

Horvis
Friday May 4th, 2007 10:26:33 PM

The centaur smiles when Jova mentions spying or surveillance.

"I can sometimes get very close by taking the form of something that they wouldn't notice. Of course, that means getting enough information to know whether I should disguise myself as a cat or a mouse."

"I say head directly to Plateau City. Maybe we can upset the Circle's plans if we arrive early."

Arien
Saturday May 5th, 2007 2:10:26 AM

"I agree, we caught the Sons' of guard because we moved faster than they were ready for. I believe if we maintain that momentum we'll be able to catch our enemies off guard and in a situation more to our choosing than what they might choose for us." Arien comments after he finishes studying the area and turns to memorizing spells. "When I'm done just let me know where we should go, though my vote goes for our property in the city."

Draax

A Short Trip  d100=16
Monday May 7th, 2007 9:11:12 AM

Arien studies the area around Arrak's lair, then memorizes his spells for the day. While he does so, the rest discuss destinations and settle on the recently-purchased house in Plateau City as a suitable place.

When all is prepared, you gather together. At first, there is quite a bit of confusion as the group maneuvers into the proper position. Finally, all is prepared, and Arien begins the chant.

After a few seconds, the world around you begings to shimmer and bend, then suddenly, everything goes black. Just as suddenly, the world reappears around you, and you find yourselfs in the entryway of the Plateau City property.

Oddly, though, things don't seem just right. As you look around, the fog of traveling clears and you notice something quite disturbing: the entire place has been ransacked.

Books, papers, and various other odds and ends lie scattered around the floor. Wall hangings have been removed in places, and some of the furniture is ripped open, the stuffing pulled out.

------------------------------------
Note: I think there are some issues with teleporting 8 people, one of whom is large. It's probably pushing the limits of the spell description to allow it, but looking at your max loads and such, I figured that if a few people were carried by others, you'd be fine.

I prefer moving the story along rather than forcing multiple teleports, but I just wanted to note it for future reference.

Searching the House
Tuesday May 8th, 2007 8:49:44 AM

Upon arriving, the group sees the state of their house and immediately goes into a defensive mode, a tribute to their training and experience.

Horvis transforms into a large rat and begins scurrying through the manor, sniffing at every corner. Some rooms have an overwhelming scent of soot and ash, most likely due to the fact that a few pieces of furniture were burned. But, Horvis also detects a number of lingering smells. He notices at least 4, and possibly 5 distinct scents through the house.

He darts to and fro, until he comes to an upstairs hallway. One of the doors is closed, but he can clearly detect two of the scents he smelled before, coming from behind the door. He can also hear an occasional light thump coming from the room.

Tratain casts a few spells, then begins his search of the house. The others follow him, weapons drawn and spells ready to fire at provocation. Tratain does not notice anything invisible, though he does see a thin, leatherbound book on a table, glowing with a magical aura.

As Tratain searches the upstairs, he, too, hears the noises and sees Horvis inspecting the single closed door.

Anyone who has been to this house before should make an intelligence check. DC22 Highlight to display spoiler: {You are fairly sure that the book Tratain noticed wasn’t in the house before}

He will fly 50 ft out, then in increments of 100ft.[Z Spot 24]

Jova walks around the block of the house, searching for any sign of someone watching.

He takes a couple of breaths, realizing that he needs to keep his head. Draax raises his sword and shield as he gets ready to charge into the room at the first sign of an enemy.

Searching the House
Wednesday May 9th, 2007 12:19:33 PM

Arien and Monthor continue wandering the grounds, searching for anything out of the ordinary, and especially looking for the woman who was hired to care for the property.

Izen, relaxing a bit after assuring himself there is no immediate danger, follows with the group, taking in the house for the first time.

Tratain gives warning about the magic book, then considers the closed door. He asks whether Izen can check it before it is opened. Horvis disdains a more combat-friendly form, possibly feeling a bit too safe given the present situation.

Jova walks the outside grounds after sending Z into the air. Jova’s search turns up nothing of interest. Through his link with Z, he learns that the outside of the house looks immaculate, as if nothing had ever happened. It would seem the destruction was limited to the interior.

Draax readies himself for a brawl, as most of the group stand outside the closed door, making decisions as to their course of action.

Behind the Door
Thursday May 10th, 2007 12:13:52 PM

Izen sets to examining the closed door. He does, in fact, locate a quite nasty looking trap. It looks as if anyone who opened the door would have set off a small explosion. From what Izen can tell, it wouldn't have been enough to kill anyone, but it surely would have hurt.

With almost no trouble at all, he is able to disable the trap and unlock the door. By this time, the remainder of the group has arrived, and all stand poised and ready to leap into action.

Izen throws the door open, and as soon as he does so, you hear a muffled scream. Looking in, you can see a man and woman lying on the floor, their hands and feet bound behind them, and scarves stuffed into their mouths. The man is staring at the door with a terrified look on his face, and the woman looks to have fainted.

There doesn't appear to be anything else of note in the room, aside from the furniture and odds and ends that have been tossed about the room, as elsewhere in the house.

Thursday May 10th, 2007 6:08:15 PM

Seeing the two people in the room, Draax has a small debate inside his head to figure out if he is more relieved or disappointed that there is no one to kill inside the room. It takes a short time for him to realize that he is disappointed not to find someone to take out his frustrations on. He takes a close look at the two to see if he recognizes them. To the nervous looking man Draax says, "Relax, we own this place."

Arien
Friday May 11th, 2007 12:25:03 AM

While Draax reasures the man Arien sweeps into the room and immediately begins removing the woman's bonds, then if no one has likewise helped the man Arien assists him as well.

Juliander

Juliander moves in to the room to check on the health of the bound man and woman, unbinding them even as he does so. "Does anyone know these two?"

Friday May 11th, 2007 8:54:07 AM

The group fans out into the room, a few keeping wary for any more traps, and Draax, Juliander and Arien kneeling to tend to the man and woman.

Once Arien has the scarf out of the woman's mouth and her bonds cut, she shakily brushes the hair out of her face, and those who have been here before finally recognize her as Hmargret, the woman hired to care for the property.

"OH! Thank you sirs! I thought we'd lay there f'rever! Those awful p-p-people!" she stammers, as she breaks down in tears.

The man, unknown to any of you, leans over to her once his bonds are cut, and quietly comforts her. "Thank you, masters," he says quietly. "I did what I could, but they were too strong. I . . . I don't know what I would have done if Hmargret had died."

Jova and Monthor take up positions to watch for more trouble, Monthor down on the first floor, Jova on the porch. Neither sees or hears anything out of the ordinary.

Horvis methodically moves through the room, trying to get a handle on the various scents he has encountered so far. Clearly, two of the scents from around the house came from these two people. Horvis can only detect two of the remaining three scents in this room, and both faintly. It may be because those two only remained briefly in here, or it may be due to the overwhelming smell of the two prisoners, who have likely been lying in their own filth, sweat and tears for a few days.

Draax
Friday May 11th, 2007 6:33:42 PM

Draax puts his weapon away and addresses the man since he seems to be the more calm of the two. "Calms yourselves, lets get you cleared up with something to eat and then you can tell us what happened, but before you do. Can you tell us where the rest of Hmargret's family is?"

Jova
Friday May 11th, 2007 11:04:57 PM

After standing at the porch for a few, Jova decides it time to find out what goes on indoors. Pushing the door open, he looks around the room. Messy. Then he sees the maddened dwarf.

"Monthor!!" He whispers as loudly as he can, hoping it still is a whisper.

If/when the dwarf looks at him he will raise his thumb pointing upwards. A definate question in his eyes. Then he will point the thumb down, same questioning glance. He hopes the dwarf knows the universal sign for good means up, bad means down.

After the answer is given, Jova points over his shoulder then points his thumb up again. Everything is ok outside.

Juliander
Saturday May 12th, 2007 11:46:25 AM

Speaking to everyone, and noone in particular, "Do we have the means nearby to allow these two to bathe?" Then speaking to the two, "Are you injured at all? Do you have wounds that required tending?" Juliander seems only interested in the well being of two recovered prisoners at the moment.

Arien
Saturday May 12th, 2007 12:33:07 PM

Arien stands and then offers his hand to Hmargret to help her stand and if the fellow needs help as well does likewise for him. Arien looks at the others and says, "I have a feeling about what happened here but I think discussions should wait for a bit until our two friends here are refreshed and have had a chance to eat."

Horvis
Sunday May 13th, 2007 9:42:32 PM

The dire rat keeps sniffing around the room, trying to get enough of the scent of the two unknowns. Horvis wants to remember the scent when he meets them again.

Actually, Horvis was about to say something but decided against it. He's never met these two people before and, considering what they've been through, may not take very well to a dire rat speaking to them. Better to let one of the others introduce him.

The story unfolds
Monday May 14th, 2007 10:21:36 AM

Hmargret takes Arien’s hand and stands up, a bit wobbily. The man politely declines the offer, and stands on his own, with a slight glare at Izen’s back.

As Juliander asks about pain or injury, both shake their heads. “Nothing a bit o’ rest won’t fix, sir,” Hmargret says. “Just a little headache is all.” Looking to Draax, she replies, “My family? I expect they’re out in town with Hnancy. No reason for them to suspect what happened here. Why, we’ve only been stuck like that since late last night.” Suddenly, realization dawns on her face. “You don’t think something happened - ?” With that, she begins crying again and buries her face in the man’s chest.

“It’s okay, honey, I’m sure they’re just fine,” says the man. With a small bow, or at least as much as he can manage with Hmargret clinging to him, he says, “My name is Pater. I’m her . . . friend? Well, you know . . . . I came to help her clean last night, hoping I could get her away a bit early for some time alone . . . . Bah! You don’t care about that, do you sirs?

“I will be fine, but if that offer of food still holds, I’d say Hmargret could do with a bit. While she eats, I can tell you the little I know, though whether it will help, I cannot say.”

Unless there are more immediate questions or comments, the group leads the two victims downstairs. It’s not difficult to clear some space at a table for everyone to sit, though if anyone goes to the kitchens, they encounter their first dilemma: most of the food has been tossed around all over the place. A good majority of it lays on the floor, dirty and trampled. One would be hard pressed to find enough to feed these two even a meager meal.

While this is going on, Pater sighs and looks around. “Well, where to start then?”

Juliander
Monday May 14th, 2007 7:49:16 PM

Seeing the state of the kitchen and its contents, Juliander removes his haversack from his back and opening it, calls for food. Turning to the two at the table, "It isn't fancy, but it is food nonetheless." Juliander pulls trail rations... jerky, dried fruit, and crusty bread from his pack, and provides it along with his waterskin.

"I am Horvis, Shifter. I recently joined my companions here. How did the intruders enter the building?"

Once the group is in the kitchen, Draax clears out a spot for the man and the woman. As he listens to the man’s story, Draax pertains like he does not hear Monthor's yell for beer.

Arien

ooc> Don't forget about the book "guys in the house".

The story unfolds (continued)
Tuesday May 15th, 2007 10:06:23 AM

While Draax clears some space, Juliander finds some trail rations in his pack and provides what meal he can for Hmargret and Pater, both of whom appear very thankful for the food, despite Pater’s prior refusal.

Izen searches the kitchens for beer. After a few minutes, he finally comes up with a bit of it, and brings some out to Monthor. Now Izen, Monthor and Jova seem to be watching outside. They see nothing aside from the regular sights of the area around the property, and the outside of the house appears for the most part unmolested by whoever trashed the inner rooms.

Horvis shifts from a dire rat to a centaur. Hmargret screams, trail rations go flying into the air, and she again grabs Pater and buries her face in his chest. Pater, too, looks a bit flabbergasted, with a look that says he cannot decide which is more confusing, a transforming rat or a centaur in the house. After a moment, he composes himself, calms Hmargret, and sets into his tale.

“As I mentioned, Hmargret and I were just straightening the place late last evening. Not much to be done, sirs, as you hadn’t been here in awhile. But there we were. Hmargret heard some sort of noise off in another room " we was right there in the kitchen then " and she goes off to check it out. She thought it might be a rat or something, so she grabbed a broom and " oh, begging your pardon sir!” he says with a terrified look at Horvis.

“Ahem…erm…yes, well, so Hmargret went to check it out " I hadn’t even heard anything, myself " then I did hear a noise. A great thump, then a sound like a sack of potatoes being dropped on the floor " don’t hit me like that, woman, I’m just tryin’ to be descriptive! I runs out of the kitchen, and I see Hmargret just layin’ there, with a big, ugly man standing over her. Well, I knew he looked tough, but I had to do something. Except, well just then, somethin’ thumped me in the back o’ the head too, and down I go.”

Hmargret, apparently regaining her composure, chimes in. “Do something? This lout stood there gawking like a fool ‘til that little fellow bopped him one on his fat head! But as to your question, sir,” she says, looking at Horvis, “I don’t know how they got in. We didn’t have a chance to look around the house, so you good sirs probably know more than we do about that.”

When Arien inserts his question, Hmargret looks thoughtful for a moment. “I hadn’t thought about that, sir. Now, those beasts tied us up and left us layin’ right over there” " she points vaguely in the direction of the next room " “while they proceeded to tear this place apart. Then they dragged us upstairs and left us in that room. I didn’t put two and two together, but even then, after a few hours of ransackin’, they wasn’t carrying anything with them. Maybe they did take something, I don’t know . . . .

“The big one did say a few thing at the end. He looks at me and says, ‘Tell them we’re watching. Tell them the time comes soon.’ Now I have no clue what that means, but that’s what he says to me.”

Tratain suggests cleaning up and moving on, and Hmargret chimes in again. “Now, good sir, you all pay me to take care of this house, and take care of it I’m going to do. Don’t you worry about this here mess, Pater and I will have it gone in no time, isn’t that right Pater?” Looking up, he replies, “Yes, sirs, it’s the least I could do after you saved us. Why, we’d have starved to death if you hadn’t come when you did!”

Ignoring any further protests, Hmargret gets up and begins tidying up the house.

Juliander
Tuesday May 15th, 2007 8:54:31 PM

"You may want to examine that book Master Arien." Juliander points toward the book that Tratain found earlier. He then turns back to the couple, "Can you describe your assailants? That might help us track them down."

Draax
Tuesday May 15th, 2007 9:11:37 PM

Draax listens to the Hmargret and her friend as they explain what they know. He avoids showing the smile that wants to display on his face when Hmargret begins scolding the man. When the explanations are completed and all the questions are answered, Draax nods his head towards the couple.

"Thanks for the explanations and I apologize for any hardship the two of you went through. Thanks for cleaning the place, but if it is too much for you please let us know. We have a few things to take care of, but once that is done, I am more than willing to help straightening the place out, so do not think that you have to take care of it all yourselves. Also, if while cleaning the place you notice that anything is missing or something new has been added besides that book, please let us know."

Once Hmargret and Pater are away from the group Draax says, "I agree, we need to find out what is up with that book."

Horvis
Tuesday May 15th, 2007 9:44:26 PM

The centaur looks down at the floor after seeing Hmargaret's alarm. Hopefully this place is solidly built, but Horvis isn't taking any chances as he shifts into the form of a human. Something about being a one ton centaur on the second floor of a building, not to mention the stairs.

Directing his question to his companions, "Have you determined if anything is missing? Or was all of this simply to inconvenience you?"

"Going to be trouble catching these assassins, if they already know we're coming," Izen observed to the dwarf.

The story unfolds (continued)
Wednesday May 16th, 2007 8:30:45 AM

Responding to Juliander, Pater says, "Well, sir, not in the best way. The two little guys were fairly well hooded, we barely got a look at them. But the big man? Certainly was an ugly one, that beast." Pater looks around at the group, then points to Tratain. "'Bout as tall as you, good sir. Short, dark hair, and a long scar down the right side of his face. And those eyes. I'll never forget those dark, angry eyes." Pater shudders as he finishes the description.

Pater jumps again when Horvis transforms, then shakes his head and mutters to himself.

The conversation turns to the book, which is still laying on the other table. As noted before, Tratain saw that it radiated magic, and he can recall from having viewed it that it was a faint abjuration aura.

He made his way upstairs to Tratain. "Glad to have a look, Tratain. What book?" Once the magic book was pointed out to him, Izen examine the book more carefully.

A Mysterious Author?
Thursday May 17th, 2007 2:17:58 PM

Sifting through the various bits and pieces of knowledge in his head, Juliander cannot recall any specific piece of information pertaining to books such as this plain, black, leatherbound volume. He does recall, though, that abjuration magic is most commonly understood to be protective magic, though such categorization can mean a multitude of things.

Horvis and Monthor suggest a trip to the catacombs, realizing this may be the most opportune time to do some shopping, in case the Circle has more plans for the group in the near future.

Apparently utilizing his superior listening skills, Izen reenters the house and heads upstairs. He sets to examining the book, and after a thorough check, determines that it is not trapped, magically or otherwise.

Tratain then directs everyone to stand back [can't stand back too far, the room isn't that large. Everyone can get 10-12 feet away if they choose], and examines the mysterious book.

[post unfinished]

Tratain, before I can finish the post, I need to know what "examine the book" entails. Are you simply turning it over in your hand, opening it, reading text (if any), tearing pages out, etc.? I'll finish the post today if you let me know via here or email

A Mysterious Author? (conclusion of above post)  d20+14=25
Thursday May 17th, 2007 8:14:06 PM

After Izen completes his investigation, Tratain directs everyone to stand back, then picks up the mysterious book.

He turns it over in his hands a few times, examining it. He can see that it is a relatively simple tome, bound in dark leather, not bearing any title or other marks on the outside.

Opening the book, Tratain begins flipping through the pages. Oddly, many of them are blank. Finally, he reaches a page with writing on it. The text appears to be a short poem. It reads:

"Hello friend,
We'll see you quite soon;
But in the meantime enjoy
My explosive rune."

As Tratain finishes reading, the book suddenly explodes in his hands. A bluish-green ball of pure energy erupts around Tratain. Luckily, he directed everyone else to stand back, and the explosion's radius is just short of hitting the onlookers.

At the sight, Hmargret faints dead away. To Pater's credit, the sound of her fall does indeed closely resemble the noise made by a falling sack of potatoes.

As the explosion fades, Tratain is standing over what is left of the table, a few charred pages in his hands, and a surprised look on his face, although he appears completely unharmed (though his eyebrows seem a bit thinner than before).

Most of the floor, walls and ceiling are darkened, and there is a large, gaping hole in the wall directly in front of Tratain. The last remnants of the book crumble in his fingers as you look on.

Juliander
Thursday May 17th, 2007 8:21:26 PM

Surprised initially, Juliander is happy to see that Tratain is relatively unharmed. A smirk plays across the bard's face, "It doesn't appear as though you're flammable friend. Though perhaps the sender of the message is..." Looking over to Arien, "Ya think?" Glancing around the room, "Perhaps it is time to begin looking for the large ugly gentleman with the scar? If you don't mind, I'd be happy to spend an evening gathering intelligence. Though I have no formal training as such, folks tend to open up to me after a few rounds and a few songs." Turning to Monthor, "You up for a drink or two, dwarf?"

Horvis
Thursday May 17th, 2007 10:07:14 PM

The shifter wearing the form of a human wipes some smudges of soot from his face, then shakes his head to dislodge a scrap of paper.

"Well. They seem to have expected us. I guess this means that we should get ready for them, in turn."

Horvis looks around at his companions. "I guess that we shouldn't go to the Catacombs individually. Who can show me where the closest outlet is?"

Arien
Thursday May 17th, 2007 11:24:51 PM

Arien quirks an eyebrow at the nearly scorched Tratain and says absently to Juliander, "Indeed." Arien looks to the others and says, "I'll stay here and help put things to right again then visit the catacombs tomorrow. I have a sudden desire to place some wards about our lodgings here."

Draax
Friday May 18th, 2007 1:03:43 AM

Draax rushes back into the house and sees the damage caused by the book. He is relieved to see that no one is hurt, but he is still irritated at the damage the assassins are causing to their home.

"The wards are a great idea Arien. It is obvious that they are trying to bait us and the worst part about it is that it is working. They either want us to come looking for them or they believe that they can make us paranoid. If they spent any time investigating us they know the latter will not work, so I am guessing that they are sending us an invitation. They probably have some information placed out there waiting for us to find it. I think that the dwarf is our best bet, but I think some of us should openly look for information about them so that they will know that we have taken the bait and to keep their eyes away from the dwarf."

Monthor
Friday May 18th, 2007 6:51:14 AM

To Julie:

" Just don't call me 'yer trusty sidekick' and we'll be okay. A drink or 20 sounds fine to me. "

Monthor cracks his knuckles.

" Me have this sudden desire to break something.... or someone anyway. "

Izen
Friday May 18th, 2007 11:10:04 AM

From his vantage near the wall, Izen waved away curling wisps of smoke and picked his way through the charred debris toward Tratain at the center of the room. He gazed up at the Protector's soot-filled, but apparently unharmed, face.

"Nice," the halfling commented.

He turned to the others. "Draax makes some good points." He ticked off points on his fingers. "This group knows who we are; knows where we live; knows that we're after them; and has enough audacity to announce their knowledge through this meaningless attack. We, on the other hand, know nothing of our opponents, their whereabouts, their strengths or weaknesses, or their operational capabilities. If we wade out to gather information blindly, we're at a comparative disadvantage. We need to reconsider our approach."

Izen frowned. "I don't want to dictate tactics, but it seems to me that we need to change the dynamic. First, this house is unsecured. I agree with Arien that we either need to secure this as a base, or abandon it in favor of a better base of operations. Personally, I favor removing our footprint from the City entirely until this matter is concluded. Magically, i suppose we could use teleportation or extradimensional spaces to accomplish that; otherwise, i suggest we just leave town."

"Second, we will need to stay together as a fighting force to maximize our strengths. Monthor, Juliander, there's no point in separating to gather intelligence, because we're already marked by our opponents, and separating only dilutes our strength. If we can't accomplish it as a group, i don't think it's worth it. Projection of strength in the theater should be our priority."

"And so that brings me to third: this attack cannot go unanswered. I agree with Monthor: we need to go find this Heidi ... and make a statement."

The halfling flexed his fingers.

Jova pokes his head in the doorway enough to hear what is transpiring. Through the link with Z he has to calm the bird several times. 'Amateurs', was the only word describing Z'z complaints.

Jova listened carefully, taking note of the others reactions. They had all just defeated a stong enemy, and looked invincible. It would take patience to remind them, constantly the danger of an assassin. This was their forte, and they were the best of the best. Stumbling on them seemed extremely unprobable.

Discussion and Planning
Friday May 18th, 2007 3:30:34 PM

As the dust settles in the room, the group immediately begins discussing options. Most seem to push for added protections on the house, though there is also the suggestion of establishing a new base of operations.

There are multiple mentions of locating Heidgolm the dwarf and obtaining more information.

Tratain is oddly quiet, possibly a bit stunned from the recent blast.

While ideas and being tossed about, Pater succeeds in helping Hmargret to her feet. She moves groggily, takes one look at the damage to the room, and sighs. "Let's just start downstairs, dear," she mumbles to Pater as she walks slowly from the room. Pater follows, and the group is free to make their plans in private.

"And, while we're at it, let's go to the Catacombs together, too. From what we've seen, going somewhere alone isn't a particularly good idea."

Horvis will accompany Juliander and whoever else is leaving the house. The shifter had never really spent much time in Plateau City, so he relies on his companions for directions and guidance. Of course, if he ever got separated or in trouble, Horvis could always shift into something else to make his escape.

Monday May 21st, 2007 4:42:30 AM

Draax approaches Hmargret, "You should go and stay at the inn tonight while we search the house for any other unexpected surprises. There is no need for you to take any risk staying here until we are sure the place is secured."

He hands Hmargret 5 gold, "Go pamper yourself, relax, and try to relieve some of the stress. I do not think we will find any other surprises, but there is no need to take any chances, especially since you have a family to take care of. Check in with us tomorrow to make sure that it is safe to return."

Once the two of them are gone, Draax says to the others. "I do not know for sure but Hmargret is probably trustworthy; she does have a family that can be used against her. So I would prefer to not put her in a situation where she would have to make a decision between us and her family. I have never seen Pater before today and if I was working for assassins trying to kill us, I would be Pater. It is the perfect cover; get in close with the caretaker and you know when the targets get home and when they leave. Or he could be exactly what he seems to be."

"I don't have much recon skill, which is why I favor not everyone staying together out in the open. I think a few people should do the recon and information gathering while the others should be in disguises as they back the recon team up."

Monthor
Monday May 21st, 2007 6:57:11 AM

"Catacombs first boys."

"Me won't be using "stealth". Send me in the tavern and me will deal with Heidi in me usual way. Loud and proud. Let the assassins come. Me'll take them on. Unless of course Tratain wants to hog all of the fun again!
Me plan is simple. Me will chat Heidi up, then out drink him, then outfight him. Then me'll take him out of the tavern and we can bring him back here. Then Iz, Draax and whoever else wants in on the fun can have their way with him.... or we can just wing it and see what happens. But let's talk about it on the way there. Me be thirsty again. "

Tratain
Monday May 21st, 2007 7:07:31 AM

Tratain says "I agree with Izen, whatever we do we need to do together. If we seperate from each other there is the chance we get attacked one at a time. Lets head to the Catacombs first, the off to find this Dwarf together."

Izen
Monday May 21st, 2007 8:50:38 AM

"I'm ready to go," the halfling said. He fell in behind Tratain.

Off to the Catacombs
Monday May 21st, 2007 5:22:45 PM

After discussing plans, the group leaves as a whole to visit the Catacombs. Once finished, everyone is sporting some new equipment, and a few people are rubbing sore arms where tattoos have been applied.

Now, it seems the group is prepared to pay a visit to Heidgolm the Dwarf.

--------------------------------------------
ooc: everything you bought at the catacombs is now available for use, but I still need updated character sheets from almost everyone.

Also, someone specify how you go about finding Heidgolm, where you'll be looking, how you try to find him, etc.

Juliander
Monday May 21st, 2007 8:24:02 PM

"Sure... if I was a betting man... I'd start looking for surly dwarf warriors in the local taverns." Juliander nudges Monthor, and prepares to duck quickly.

Monthor
Monday May 21st, 2007 8:40:59 PM

Monthor looks at Julie like he doesn't quite understand if his new friend ment to make a joke or not...

" Well, of course that's where you'd find a dwarven warrior. Where else would he be? A flower shop? "

ooc> Didn't the dragon tell us where he'd be?

Izen
Monday May 21st, 2007 9:37:26 PM

Izen followed along, ruminating about assassins and their tactics.

ooc: Sorry for the short notice, gang, but I will be unable to post on Wednesday and Thursday. Anyone willing to sub?

[I can take care of it. Marcin]

Jova
Monday May 21st, 2007 11:50:15 PM

The talk goes on about how to proceed. Jova stands back and listens. Not having been in this city before, he didnt feel like venturing off alone. Not with the proverbial bulleye on his back.

Monthor was sure enough going to get them into trouble anyway, so he watches.

Draax
Tuesday May 22nd, 2007 2:55:40 AM

"The lady that works for the dragon said that we will most likely find the dwarf in Shanty Town. I guess we can start with the taverns in that area. Since he is a dwarf we should start at the lowest quality drinking places and then work our way up."

Tratain
Tuesday May 22nd, 2007 7:45:11 AM

Tratain says "Yeah, lets go start looking in shanty town, we'll check all the taverns there. When we find him Monthor can negotiate with him for us so to speak."

OOC: Posting report will be up later, didn't have time last night and I'm late for work right now heh.

Monthor
Tuesday May 22nd, 2007 7:51:39 AM

'Negotiate'.... your funny cleric. 'Negotiate'. Gee that's really funny. Try ' Me punch him in the face and see what comes of it.'

Into Shantytown
Tuesday May 22nd, 2007 2:48:29 PM

The group decides to head for Shanty Town. Aside from the fact that you are being hunted by a team of assassins, it's a fairly nice walk. The day is clear and bright, and the air is warm.

You approach Clangden's Gate, at the west end of Shanty Town and begin to push your way through the milling throng of people moving to and fro through the gate.

Izen Highlight to display spoiler: { You feel something lightly brush one of your pockets. Make a spot check. If you beat DC30, read the second spoiler.}

Izen second Highlight to display spoiler: { Looking around, you don't actually see anyone out of the ordinary, but about 20 feet behind you, it appears as if people are being pushed to the side by some unseen force. In fact, something unseen is moving away from you, judging by the progression of people seemingly shoved out of the way.}

It looks as if it will take about 10-15 minutes to make your way through the Gate and into Shantytown through this crowd.

-------------------------------------
Please give me specific actions and appropriate checks once you enter the area, so I know what you're doing and how you're searching.

Everything okay with Horvis and Arien? haven't heard from them in a few days.

Monthor  d20+1=3
Tuesday May 22nd, 2007 7:44:37 PM

The dwarf feels like he's back home. Having grown up in Dirt City, Monthor is well familiar with places like Shanty Town and feels most comfortable here. Monthor takes the lead of the group as he makes his way through the crowds. He knows enough to keep one hand on his axe and the other on his gold. Monthor knows, and shares with the other party members, that a dwarf like Heidi is going to be well enough known by the locals that with the right question asked of the right local it shouldn't take to long to find out where the dwarf chooses to spend his leizure time.

ooc> Monthor doesn't seem to have good luck as his gather information role is a rotten 3.

Monthor decides to throw some money around and promises 5 gold pieces to the most likely street urchen if he can find out where Heidi is.

Juliander  d20+22=36 d20+7=22
Tuesday May 22nd, 2007 9:49:14 PM

Prior to making his way to shantytown with the group, Juliander changes clothing after pulling a meager peasant's outfit from his haversack. Oddly, the bard still manages to hide his mithral shirt under the modest, overly large drab tunic and breeches. He then unkempts himself, rubbing a liberal amount of dirt across his arms and face, to make it look as though he may have had an honest day's work digging ditches.

Once in shantytown, Juliander affects a local dialect, speaking with the good folks nearby, "I'm lookin' for me honest day's pay, if'n ya know what I mean, but I've been workin' for a salty dwarf... what looks like he's seen a fight or two. Names Heida... er somethin' like that... its hard ta pronouce them names. Have you seen him around?"

(OOC: Disguise Check DC 36. Gather Information DC 22)

Horvis  d20+17=20
Tuesday May 22nd, 2007 9:53:28 PM

The centaur returns from the Catacombs with some new tattoos scarring his hide and a wooden shield on his arm. When he learns that the group is going to travel into Shantytown, and he learns something about that place, he decides that concealing some of his ability is worthwhile. With his companions' permission, Horvis will shift into the form a large dog and pace along with them.

This is definitely not Horvis' strong suit but he will keep his nose to the ground, in a sense, to learn what he can.
Survival = 20

OOC - Apologies. Yesterday was a public holiday in Canada and we moved our tabletop session to last night, too. Anyway, I thought it was Sunday and forgot to post.

Arien
Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 12:35:17 AM

Arien, not being entirely familiar or comfortable with the surroundings, sticks with Monthor as the dwarf seems much more at ease in the area.

Draax
Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 12:36:27 AM

Draax tags along with the others, he lets those that are better at it do the talking and information gathering. Taking Monthor's warning to heart, Draax puts his money bag in his Bill's Stylish Pants O' Plenty.

Whenever they enter a tavern, Draax will order a drink, but will only sip from the glass, most likely not finishing the drink before they more on to the next place.

Jova  d20+14=15
Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 1:41:57 AM

Jova sends Z up high, telling the bird to land on a building opposite the tavern they end up entering. There the bird can watch for and warn of anyone acting suspiciously.

As Horvis changes into dog form, Jova walks near him. When traffic is bunched together he talks to the dog.

"Horvis, could you take the form of a snake? If you can I could carry you around my neck. If/when we find the dwarf, we can pull our own ruse to take attention from others. I could be a terrific snake charmer.."

Otherwise, Jova watches the streets. He pays close attention to shop names, and locations. One never knew when said info would come in handy.

Z spot for danger natural 1 bleh!!
Will roll for bluff check next post if Horvis agrees.

[Monthor] 'Me punch him in the face and see what comes of it.'

"Really? So, what do you people do when it comes to courtship? No, wait. I don't want to know."

Suddenly Izen tenses. "Someone just tried to dig in my pocket." He looks around, and is immediately put on alert by not seeing the offender [Spot 21]. Izen vanishes from sight [activating Ring of Invisibility] and flies up into the air [using Winged Boots]. Then he starts to circle the location, looking for the offender or anything else out of place.
