Moving About Town (DM JohnP) Monday April 30th, 2007 10:10:08 PM DM Apology - I did it again. I didn't post Friday night, hoping to let more people post and then didn't do it over the weekend. So, going forward, I'm going to post every weeknight.
Arm follows MacConal outside, waiting for the others to join him and decide where they will be going. Thar is outside, too, and suggests splitting up to accomplish two things. When he speaks of getting Birdie questioned by a druid, MacConal turns to look at Thar.
"Why would you want your animal questioned? Do you think that it has something to tell you about the Plateau City Defence League? I guess that you do know where their headquarters are, then. I'll be heading back home."
However, before the young elf can start walking, Mira and the others come outside. The sorcerer suggests meeting MacConal at the monument in a short time. MacConal nods and turns to Conner, suggesting another drink in the tavern while waiting.
Once MacConal returns to the bar, Shadow slips out to join the others out of sight of the entrance. A quick plan is formed: - Shadow will head directly to PCDL headquarters to put them under observation - Thar, Kadaz and Kirsten will take Birdie to a druid to be questioned - Mira, Edmund, Arm and Conner will meet MacConal at the monument
But, first, Edmund suggests using a Message spell to communicate with one another. He prepares to cast the spell on the others, Kirsten strangely having declined to accept a spell cast by her childhood friend.
With the exception of Shadow, everyone heads back to the apartment to retrieve whatever they want and make ready for an evening of investigation. After Kadaz gets his armor on, there's not much time to meet MacConal at the monument. After closing up the apartment, the party heads to Open Palm Market to wait for MacConal. At this time of night, the vendors have closed up shop and there's only a few people walking through the market. Hopefully MacConal will not run afoul of any roaming bands of PCDL thugs.
Any concern was unwarranted, though, for MacConal is soon seen striding up Riverside Road. His long hair is stirred by the slight wind that is blowing from the southeast, gently carrying the sounds of the Falls across the City.
"I'll take you close to the headquarters - it's not the friendliest place for elves, you know. Then I'll head back home. I was thinking, while I waited, that if you want to find a druid to question your animal, Thistledown, one of my friends might be able to do it? We could walk back to Hind Quarter together, too. Or, you could go to Druid Quarter and see if you can find a nature priest."
MacConal leads the party to the west, towards the road marking the boundary between Trade Quarter and Guild Quarter. He seems more cautious as he gets closer, making sure to keep near the buildings where he might be able to duck out of sight. He comes to a corner familiar to the others, and indicates that the headquarters are just ahead.
"There you go, just around there. The place with the humans and others standing and sitting around outside. I'll be going back to my home, now. Remember, I'll come by Sampson's tomorrow afternoon to hear what you learned."
With thar, MacConal starts walking east back the way he came. If Thar are walking with the elf, he will chat quietly as they head northwast until they have reached the northern loop of the river, along the other end of Riverside. When MacConal reaches the bridge to Circus Quarter that roughly marks the division between Trade Quarter and Rogue Quarter, he'll stop and look at Thar and whoever else is with him.
"If you want me to find Thistledown to question your dog, come with me to Hind Quarter. Otherwise, you should head across Rogue Quarter to Druid Quarter. Even at this time of night you should be able to find a druid without much problem.
Those with MacConal - Handle Animal DC 10 - Highlight to display spoiler: {Birdie's uneasiness has faded. There are still times, though, that she seems to feel threatened by something nearby.}

After leaving the others, Shadow makes his way to the PCDL headquarters. He is able to slip unnoticed into the alley and make his way to the back of the building. There are lights from inside that light up the backporch, so he can't get quite as close as before. Once there, he can hear the voices of Davern Barber and Fendrik Vedder from inside. He can't make out too much of what Barber is saying, though, but the slurred voice of Fendrik Vedder is easily heard.
After some time, Shadow hears the others speaking over the Message spell and he is able to relay what he has overheard.
Arm d20+4=18 d20+11=18 Tuesday May 1st, 2007 5:57:36 AM
As they approach the PCDL headquarters, Arm cannot shake the feeling that they are being led like cattle to the slaughter. As he does his best to scout the area (spot=18, listen=18), he hopes that Kadaz and company return soon.
Shadow d20+14=21 d20+2=15 d20+7=17 d20+15=35 Tuesday May 1st, 2007 9:32:29 AM
Shadow will remain where he is until he sees the leaders of the PCDL leave (or has not heard anything for a couple of minutes). He will then move back down the alley to keep an eye on the leaders. (He will keep the others informed as to what is going on.)
Thar ail Baerer d20+4=14 Tuesday May 1st, 2007 10:48:34 AM
To Ed, Thar says "I'll take the message spell."
Nodding to MacConal and enjoying the brief chat with another elf, Thar says "Its been nice chatting with you on our walk and thanks for your offer of assistance, but I've got someone in the Druid Quarter that I was planning on using. We'll see you tomorrow at Sampsons anbd hopefully we'll have some good information for you." He'll look towards Kadaz and Kirsten and see if they're ready to go find a druid.
Handle Animal Check = 14 (After they leave MacConal, he'll say this) Watching Birdie, Thar adds "Well, it seems that Birdie is calmer, but I still think something is wrong."
Once they leave MacConal, Thar will explain his deception to his companions, saying "I don't totally trust him or his recommendation for a druid. I think we can easily find a druid in the druid quarter and have our questions remain anonymous."
He'll try to find a reasonable looking druid in the quarter and query what the charge would be to speak w/ Birdie.
Edmund Tuesday May 1st, 2007 2:24:21 PM
After casting Message on everyone except for Kirsten and himself, Edmund heads off with Mira, Arm, and Conner towards the Monument. Once they arrive, and the new instructions are given, Edmund slips his rod out of the belt loop.
"Well, I suppose if it were done when 'tis done, twere well it were done quickly," he says. "I'm ready when you are."
With that, he sets off with the three others towards the headquarters of the infamous PCDL.
Conner d20+4=8 Tuesday May 1st, 2007 7:57:20 PM
Conner braces to accept the wizard's message spell, unsure of what exactly may occur. He is relieved when no bolt of lightning or beam of searing light pierces his body, and he can hear the merest whisper of his companions.
"Thanks Edmund." he acknowledges his comrades effort. "I think we need to be very careful as we proceed. It was very convenient that this particular opportunity arose so soon."
When they meet their guide at the monument, Conner stays close to the elf and tries to keeps a sharp eye for danger [Spot=8 Yuk].
Kirsten d20+11=13 Tuesday May 1st, 2007 8:14:51 PM
She leaves with Thar and Kadaz, nodding a faint farewell to MacConal.
As they are leaving, her attention turns towards Birdie and she mutters in agreement to Thar's comment, "He seems very much calmer but there is still something..." (Handle Animal Check = 13)
The paladin attempts to help Thar find a reasonable druid to ask for help. "Let's see if we can't find a druid and get to the bottom of this."
Kadaz d20+7=26 Tuesday May 1st, 2007 8:37:09 PM
Kadaz accepts the message spell before they leave. "Good idea, Edmund. If you get into trouble just call and we'll come running."
"Now, Thar and Kirsten, let's go find a druid! And find out what this little guy's thinking" Kadaz rubs Birdie's head affectionately. (handle animal 26)
On the way to find a druid Kadaz tries to get more information from Kirsten. "So, you grew up with Edmund. I find him hilarious, myself. Was he always like that."
Mira (AC 13, HP 46 )(Message) Tuesday May 1st, 2007 8:43:26 PM
"Not bad for someone who gets his magic from a book," says Mira, happy that Edmund has solved a problem for the party.
The sorcerer stays with the group checking out the PCDL headquarters, trusting that Birdie will keep the rest out of trouble.
Mira reviews some of the more complicated spells at her disposal as she waits for Shadow to check in through the message spell.
Loitering (DM JohnP) Tuesday May 1st, 2007 10:34:59 PM
Thar, Kirsten and Kadaz bid farewell to MacConal and watch the elf cross the bridge to the north side of the river. After watching for a moment, the trio continue walking towards Druid Quarter. They have to pass through the north edge of Rogue Quarter before reaching the parklike setting of Druid Quarter and they both hear and see that the theatres and other entertainments in Rogue Quarter are busy.
As they walk, both Thar and Kirsten pay attention to Birdie. But Kadaz is most familiar with his companion, and he notices that Birdie seems more relaxed as they walk. Still, from time to time, Birdie tenses and seems to look around for something unseen.
Shortly after the trio enter Druid Quarter, they find a halfling sitting crosslegged on the turf. The woman is dressed in leathers and seems to be studying a collection of fruits. She looks up when they come close, with a quizzical look.
"Is there something that I can help you with?"
++++++
Shadow continues to hear bits of the conversation between Fendrik Vedder and Davern Barber inside the headquarters of the Plateau City Defence League. He doesn't get much, just something about planning something for later this week. He can relay all of this to the others in the street.
Arm easily spots the people loitering outside the headquarters. When he looks back at ther others, Conner and Edmund particularly, he realizes that he will need to help them find a place to hide. Mira seems pretty innocuous, but the fighter and the wizard stick out like sore thumbs.
DM OOC - Trying to keep things in synch, so that's why not much for the people watching the headquarters.
Arm d20+4=14 d20+11=12 Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 5:52:16 AM
Arm quickly notices his more conspicuous companions and motions for them to follow him into the nearest alley. He then says to them, "I admit that I am not as good at finding hiding places as Shadow is, so you're pretty much on your own as far as that goes. Perhaps it is best that the two of you wander around one street over, and if something should happen, the message spell can alert you. The last thing we need is for the 'League' to discover us.".
He then returns to the mouth of the alley, where he quickly peers out (spot=14, listen=12).
Shadow d20+2=6 d20+7=15 Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 9:25:15 AM
Shadow continues to watch the back of the PCDL HQ. Whatever he does hear he will pass on using the message spell.
Actions: Listen=6 Spot=15
Edmund Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 1:11:25 PM
Edmund looks around and realises that he is a bit out of place--that is to say, there are no other rod-toting-wizards anywhere in sight.
"Right-ho," he says, and heads off to the next street over, as instructed.
Kadaz Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 5:24:26 PM
Kadaz turns to face the fruit woman. "Yes please, hopefully you can. We believe that my dog, Birdie, may have sensed something very important and we would like to talk with him. Would you know anyone able to cast an appropriate spell to make this possible?"
Thar ail Baerer Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 5:27:31 PM
Thar comments to her in a low voice so that only she, Thar and his companions can hear "Madam, we need some help with speaking to our companion here (pointing to Birdie) and wondered if you could cast a spell that would allow it. Also, we would appreciate being able to do it somewhere where we couldn't be overheard or seen, say by an invisible person nearby? What would the charge be madam?"
Kirsten d20+2=5 Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 7:45:01 PM
She sticks close to Thar and Kadaz, commenting lightly to Kadaz's question about Edmund.
"Oh, he's pretty much always been like that... seems he's mellowed out a bit, though."
When they reach the halfling woman, Kirsten regards her curiously. For the most part she allows Thar and Kadaz to do the talking, attempting to look around and see if they might have been followed. (Spot = 5)
Mira d20+11=19 d20+9=21 Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 10:55:24 PM
"Hey! Wait Ed!" Calls Mira, and she hooks an arm through the wizards, whirling him about. "Come with me!"
Mira approaches the folks loitering about the outside of the PCDL headquarters, and addressing the group, announces, "I understand this building might be up for sale. I'm looking for some new digs in this area. Mind if I have a look inside?" (Bluff=19) Scanning the group, the woman looks for the smallest, and weakest of the gang, and addresses that individual with as sweet a tone as she can muster (Diplomacy=9) "you must be the one in charge? Right? How about a guided tour of your club house?"
Mira keeps her hold on the wizard's arm, ensuring he doesn't flee.
On Both Sides of Town (DM JohnP) Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 11:33:12 PM
In Druid Quarter, three of the party speak with the Halfling that they encountered. Kadaz and Thar ask about spellcasting to speak with Birdie while Kirsten hangs back to check for any watchers. When Thar inquires about invisible watchers, the Halfling woman shrugs and stands. Standing, she's not much taller than she was when sitting. She looks over at Kadaz and says, "You might want to hold on to your companion."
After Kadaz does so, she shifts, blurring in an instant into the form of a wolf. The druid sticks her muzzle into the air and sniffs deeply, trying to catch the scent of anything nearby. Birdie tries to back behind Kadaz after being confronted by a wolf instead of a friendly Halfling.
"Thnno, thno invithibleth thnearby. Leth me cath and thee what your friend knowth."
The druid in wolf form sits still for a moment before releasing a spell. After a moment, she and Birdie whine and bark quietly to one another. When the conversation ends, the wolf looks over at the trio.
"Thomething you want to ath her?"
+++++++
Shadow sinks deeper into the shadows, listening to what he can of the conversation inside. It's not much because there's some disturbance at the front of the headquarters.
Arm is about to direct Edmund, Conner and Mira to wait out of sight on a neighboring street when Mira drags Edmund off towards the front of the headquarters. The people loitering outside the entrance look up as the pair approach, sneering when they see Edmund. Mira doesn't get any chance to launch into her spiel before the jeers and taunts start.
"Look-it the halfie! Whatcha doing here?"
"Who'd you get the ears from, your ma or pa?"
"What should we do boys?"
Edmund d20+10=24 d20+9=19 Thursday May 3rd, 2007 2:56:36 AM
As an altercation begins to form literally before his very eyes, Edmund mutters under his breath to Mira, "Most unwise."
"My apologies, Gents," he says to the PCDL men assembled before him. "You must forgive my lady. She has had a little more than she should have had this evening at a dinner party, if you catch my meaning, and I must get her home to his lordship's manor before the hour grows too late. You... you wouldn't happen to be the renowned Plateau City Defence League, would you? His lordship is much indebted to your fine service for the community, and he never stops telling us--his servants I mean, as we're elves you see--how you are doing the right thing for the city what with keeping it clean of troubling individuals. His lordship has been most strenuous on this point, and though he needs little protection with his substantial armed guard and personal cadre of knights, it just goes to show how much he cares about the common people, what what? Keep up the good work, I'm sure he'd tell you, were he here himself. As he's not, I'll be certain to pass on to the master how you're looking out for the people of the town, keeping their safety at heart. Mayhap he'll consider a suitable reward for your concern." (Bluff=24, Diplomacy=19)
Edmund hopes that the tale about Mira being the relative of a powerful lord is enough to kowtow the PCDL into leaving them alone, or if not that, then that the reference to a heavily armed group of protectors might at least frighten them into not injuring either of them. He places his hand firmly on Mira's arm and smiles gently, doing his best not to shake in his boots.
"Come along your ladyship, my lord's manor is not this way, begging your pardon. Let's leave these fellows to their good work."
Arm Thursday May 3rd, 2007 5:49:21 AM
By the time he recovers from Mira's rash act, it is too late to stop her. Slipping back into the alley a moment, Arm draws his sword, then holds it behind his back. Moving once again to the mouth of the alley, he keeps an eye open while he addresses the group through the message spell, "Mira has decided to try a frontal approach and it doesn't look good. Be ready to move on them.".
Shadow d20+7=14 d20+2=20 Thursday May 3rd, 2007 9:49:49 AM
Shadow swears to himself as he prepares to act if need be. He will pop up just a little to catch a glimpse into the interior to see if what Mira is doing has drawn the leaders out.
IF they are not there he will make to move around the building to support his comrades.
IF they do not move to the front of the building Shadow will remain where he is to see what else he might learn.
Actions: Spot=14 Listen=20
Thar ail Baerer Thursday May 3rd, 2007 10:24:22 AM
Kneeling in front of Birdie and speaking in soothing tones, Thar says "Oh faithful friend Birdie, I only have a few questions for you. What has made you so uncomfortable around that elf that we met at the eating place where we go quite often? Also, you have seemed uncomfortable at times during our walk here and is there something you're seeing or sensing that has made you feel this way?"
Conner Thursday May 3rd, 2007 6:48:11 PM
The fighter does his best to look inconspicuous as he waits for word from one street over. The ominous message from Arm about Mira's action does not sit well with the burly man, and he immediately begins to make his way closer to the PCDL headquarters. He stops at the corner, out of direct sight and waits for a call to action.
Kirsten Thursday May 3rd, 2007 7:42:36 PM
The paladin's eyes instantly turn back towards the others as the halfling transforms in such a way. The paladin's brows raising in curiousity, Kirsten not having much experience with Druids in general.
Those eyes quickly shift between Birdie and the newly transformed wolf, the woman shaking her head, clearly impressed.
Kadaz Thursday May 3rd, 2007 9:27:39 PM
Kadaz also kneels down to look into Birdie's eyes. Thar has asked everything that they need to know. "Birdie, you're my best friend Thank you." Kadaz gives Birdie a hug, regardless of how the dog answers.
Close Call (DM JohnP) d20+10=20 Thursday May 3rd, 2007 11:15:54 PM
Thar poses the questions that the trio would like answered, kadaz and Kirsten nodding agreement.
The druid in wolf form yips, whines and barks once more with Birdie. Then she stops and speaks to the trio.
"Thee thmelt thomething thrange, not lithe anything before. That's what bothered her. Not good, thee thaid."
"Thee thmelt the thmell again thoming here."
"Thee than't tell where thmell thoming from. That bothers her, too."
With that, the druid yips and barks again and Birdie wags her tail strongly.
"Told her that you'd protect her. Theep her thafe and fed, like leader should."
The driod shifts back into a halfling, crouching on the grass. She nods to the trio and then returns to her study of the fruits.
The trio can now make their way back across the City, hopefully using Edmund's magic to locate their companions.
++++++
Edmund spins a quick tale, trying to explain there presence on this street. His quick thinking might have saved him a thumping. Either that, or the slightly inebriated Plateau City Defence League goons couldn't follow what he was telling them. Still, they glare and make rude noises at Mira and the half-elf before they start moving away up the street.
Arm relays what has happened through the Message spell, making both Conner and Shadow tense for action.
The commotion is enough to draw someone from inside the headquarters. Arm sees Davern Barber come outside and speak to the supporters of the PCDL. Barber glances up the street at the departing pair but doesn't seem to react. However, a pair of thugs push themselves off the benches and begin to casually follow Mira and Edmund away.
Mira Thursday May 3rd, 2007 11:50:49 PM
"Sorry, sorry," a frustrated Mira mutters in low tone. The thwarted sorcerer fumes silently to herself at the taunts of the others. "I'd like to just fireball the whole lot of them," gets carried through the message spell, though the idea was said in low tone so that only Edmund should here.
"Very sorry, Edmund...guys," she continues quite embarrassed that the ruse failed.
Edmund Friday May 4th, 2007 12:14:28 AM
As they walk away, Edmund glances back over his shoulder, and upon spotting the PCDL men following him, makes as if he is looking around for something which might have been dropped. He turns back to Mira, speaking in a clear, distinct voice as he does so, "No, I'm afraid I don't see my ladyship's scarf--is my ladyship certain she wore one this evening?"
Edmund steers Mira towards the Druid quarter, hoping that they'll run into Kirsten and Thar. Despite his original apprehension, at this moment there is nothing Edmund wants to see than Kirsten mounted on her warhorse coming down the lane towards them.
To Mira, he says quietly, "Don't look now--but seems we have company. You might want to let the people on the message link know we're being followed by two PCDL men, and I don't think they're coming to invite us to tea."
Edmund ((Correction)) Friday May 4th, 2007 12:16:52 AM
((The above should be 'my lady' not 'my ladyship'--even as amusing/terrifying as it might be to imagine Edmund in a dress and tiara. The perils of late-nite posting strike again.
I may miss Monday's post as I return to class on Monday. Hopefully not, but just a heads-up just in case. Thanks! +Shawn))
Arm d20+4=21 d20+11=23 Friday May 4th, 2007 8:45:01 AM
Relieved that no battle has ensued at this time, Arm quickly sheathes his sword and says, through the message spell, "Mira and Ed are safe for now, but two thugs are following them. I will leave the alley this way and follow...Conner, leave the alley at the other end and meet up with me down the block...Shadow, stay where you are and let us know if there are any changes.".
He then leaves the alley at a casual pace to follow them, but taking anything but a casual observance to his surroundings (spot=21, listen=23).
Shadow d20+7=21 d20+2=17 Friday May 4th, 2007 9:22:52 AM
"Gotcha" Shadow says as Arm goes to follow the men following Mira and Edmund. Shadow tries to remain comfortable, but wants to be able to hear what is going on inside the HQ.

Thar ail Baerer Friday May 4th, 2007 2:01:09 PM
After thanking the druid, Thar gives Birdie a hug and a treat from his dried meat stash. He asks his companions "What do you think it could be in re: to smelling bad? Could the elf be in some disguise or under a polymorph or illusion spell? I'm not real happy with trusting him, but until we know more, I'm not sure we can do much else than proceed carefully."
As he walks towards the meeting place, he hears through the message spell about the tail on Mira/Ed. Softly he passes on the info to Kirsten, since she doesn't have the message spell. (I'm assuming that Kadaz does) He says "Well, I think we should carefully make our way to the group, except we should work on following Mira/Ed's pursuers, kind of like making the hunters the hunted." If they agree, he'll begin talking to the rest of his Message audience and try to coordinate their actions.
Kirsten Friday May 4th, 2007 8:43:19 PM
The paladin listens intently to what Birdie says through the druid. Smiling faintly at the dog's last little comment there, before she murmurs thoughtfully.
"You're right about being careful, I don't like the feel of this all. If he cant' figure out where the smell is coming from, then that makes things just that more difficult."
Upon hearing the news of the others, Kirsten falls somewhat silent... thoughtful.
"Why don't the two of you follow the ones that are following them, and I'll see if I can't meet up with Mira and Edmund," she looks to Thar and Kadaz. "Just in case something happens and they need a little extra help."
Kadaz Saturday May 5th, 2007 3:27:47 PM
Kadaz thanks the druid very much and also hugs Birdie. "Of course I will, you silly, silly dog. Now, let's go find the others."
Kadaz did accept the message spell so can easily coordinate with Edmund.
Since Kirsten has a plan Kadaz agrees to follow it. Seems like these paladins are thinkers.
Meeting in the Market (DM JohnP) Saturday May 5th, 2007 10:34:52 PM
Kadaz embraces Birdie before he, Thar and Kirsten leave Druid Quarter. The trio are discussing what they've learned form the druid's spell as they walk. They're making good time back to Trade Quarter since the crowds have thinned a bit. And they wonder what kind of trouble the others might have gotten into. Once, as they walk, Birdie stops and stares intently at a pair of people leaning against a building in Rogue Quarter. As soon as Kadaz realizes this, the pair split up and walk in different directions and Birdie relaxes a little. No one recognized the two people that Birdie stared at.
It's going to take some more walking before they are in the working range of the Message spell. But Open Palm Market is just up ahead and they should be getting something soon.
++++++
Mira quickly realizes her ruse has failed. Or, it might have worked and the Plateau City Defense League thugs simply reacted in a different manner. Either way, she and Edmund are now being followed by a pair of the thugs. Mira whispers through the Message spell to her companions.
Arm pushes himself away the wall after whispering through the spell to Conner and Shadow. He follows the two thugs that are, in turn, following Mira and Edmund. The pair doesn't look all that steady on their feet. Arm can't tell if the pair are trying to find out where Mira and Edmund are headed, or if they are simply looking for a pair of rich people to mug. With his senses heightened, Arm does not spot or hear anyone else moving in the street. In fact, Conner hasn't responded yet, either. Davern Barber has gone back inside.
Shadow stays where he is, tucked safely into the dark alleyway behind the PCDL headquarters. He can't hear too much until Davern Barber returns. The conversation is a bit heated, mainly Barber telling Fendrik Vedder that he has to stay sober ... or at least act sober ... over the next couple days.
Mira and Edmund lead the pair of thugs towards Open Palm Market. Once they reach the edge, Mira hears the first message from Kadaz inquiring how they are doing. Behind them, Arm sees the pair of thugs slow and stop once they see the "rich lady and retainer" move into a large, open public area. Even if Open Palm Market isn't busy at this time of night, it seems that their immediate plans have been spoiled.
DM OOC - And, from now on, everything is in time-synch. Or, it's supposed to be.
Thar ail Baerer Sunday May 6th, 2007 10:33:12 AM
Thar will stay with Kadaz and when he sees the thugs stop following Mira/Ed, he says to Kadaz (and ensurs that others in the message spell can hear) "Do you want to move and follow these two and maybe capture them for ourselves? We could question them and find out a little more about them?"
Conner d20+1=9 d20+4=24 Sunday May 6th, 2007 3:59:43 PM
The fighter responds immediately to Arm's sugestion and leaves his spot in the alley, paralleling Mira and Edmund and the trailing thugs. Once Conner sees his friends sdafely back into Open Palm Market, he stays near the edge of the market and watches the thugs from a distance. [Hide=9, Spot=24]
Mira Sunday May 6th, 2007 11:18:16 PM
"Keep walking Edmund. If I know Arm and Conner, they'll be somewhere close and we may just end upturning the tables here" Mira whispers.
Arm d20+4=24 d20+11=15 Monday May 7th, 2007 5:49:15 AM
Arm slows his pace to match that of his quarry and whispers to those who may not see what is transpiring, "They've slowed up a bit now that we're approaching the Open Palm..if they break off their pursuit, I'm still going to follow them.". He then says for Mira's benefit, "Chin up, love...we are watching and will keep you safe.".
He then tries to remain as inconspicuous as possible as he keeps an eye on the thugs (spot=24 - nat. 20, listen=15).
Kadaz Monday May 7th, 2007 6:51:49 AM
"Good idea Thar. Let's capture these two." He then messages to Mira to arrange a capture. "They don't like the open. Take a side stree that is dark. I'm sure they'll follow and we'll be right behind them. That way we can take them and not be as obvious about it."
Shadow d20+2=15 d20+7=17 Monday May 7th, 2007 11:42:25 AM
Hearing all of this Shadow feels he should be with the group, but remaining here is more important right now so he remains where he is. He will continue trying to hear what the group is talking about, but it does not seem like anything is going to happen today.
Edmund Monday May 7th, 2007 3:16:00 PM
Edmund nods to Mira, doing his best not to glance back over his shoulder as he continues to lead her into the centre of the Market, "Of course, my lady," he says. "It's not far now."
Crossing the Market in the Middle of the Night (DM JohnP) Monday May 7th, 2007 10:41:14 PM
Bolstered by the whispered support of their companions, Mira and Edmund walk directly across Open Palm Market. A bit of coaching from Thar and Kadaz is enough to direct them to the shadowy street where the trio returning from the Druid Quarter are waiting.
Behind Mira and Edmund, the pair of Plateau City Defence League thugs hesitate for a moment before beginning to walk acoss the market square. They don't notice anyone moving behind them, so Arm and Conner are able to keep pace. The pair of thugs seem to be walking quickly, trying to catch up with Mira and Edmund without actually running.
The quick communication between the members of the Mithril Order has set the stage for a trap. Or, the trio could simply make themselves known and scare the thugs off. It depends, really, on what Kirsten decides but the paladin has been quiet.

Meanwhile, back at the headquarters, Shadow listens to a one-sided drunken argument. It finally ends with Fendrik Vedder shouting something unintelligible at Davern Barber and then banging through the back door of the headquarters. Vedder sways and tightly grips the stair railing as he climbs to the second floor of the building. Mutters about "inconsiderate oafs" and "thankless work" and "miss them so ..." can be heard as Vedder struggles with the upper door. Then he makes his way inside.
Nothing can be heard from the back room of the headquarters.
Arm d20+4=10 d20+11=30 Tuesday May 8th, 2007 5:47:05 AM
Arm agrees with the trap plan, and says to Mira, "We will be right behind you, and I think it best we put these two out of commission for a bit.". He then tries to look ahead to find an appropriate spot to spring their trap, but watching the thugs at the same time seems too much for one person to do (spot=10, listen=30).
Conner d20+2=14 d20+1=12 Tuesday May 8th, 2007 7:30:16 AM
The tattooed fighter circles the edge of the market area and tries to position himself to close off any escape routes for the two thugs should they pursue Mira and the mage into an alley.

Mira Tuesday May 8th, 2007 7:34:39 AM

Thar will continue following the thugs and do his best to remain silent and hidden, and whispers (via message spell) "OK, how do we want to spring this trap? Who wants to do the talking and intimidating the thugs? Conner, Arm and Kadaz, who's the best at looking big and mean?"

Edmund Tuesday May 8th, 2007 2:33:06 PM
Edmund continues alongside Mira, nodding and pretending to carry on a conversation with her so as to prevent the thugs behind them from realising that their presence is known. At the same time, Edmund carefully slips his rod from his belt loop to his hand, taking a moment to whisper under his breath to Mira.
"Have them tell us when they're ready, and we'll turn about suddenly and close the net on these boobs before they realise what is happening."
Kadaz Tuesday May 8th, 2007 5:13:30 PM
"I think Conner is the most intimidating, but I swing a pretty mean axe. Let's advance on them and take them alive."
Kirsten d20+2=12 Tuesday May 8th, 2007 6:18:01 PM
The Paladin, in her armor, knows that it is rather futile for her to try to hide within the shadows as the others are. So she sucks in a deep breath when she sees Mira and Edmund heading into that street, and walks towards them steadily. Kirsten does her best to appear rather annoyed, and more than a little impatient as she approaches them.
"I have been looking all about the city for you!" she exclaims, as she moves closer to Mira and Edmund. "My Lady, it is dangerous to be wandering the streets so late. The lord is sick with worry."
Kirsten bows subtly to Mira, ignoring Edmund completely.
"Allow me to accompany you home."

And the Thugs go 'Oops' (DM JohnP) Tuesday May 8th, 2007 10:08:27 PM
Kirsten steps out and speaks to Mira and Edmund, trying to follow what was relayed by Kadaz and Thar. Her armor has been polished enough to reflect what little light enters the street. Enough reflections for the two thugs from the Plateau City Defence League to stop and begin to retreat.
It's then that they notice Conner and Arm approaching from behind them, plus Kadaz and Thar where they have been standing. The pair glance in all direction, apparently judging their chances of outrunning any pursuit. They don't like what they see, so they simply stand there waiting for the party to approach. When the party gets close, the shorter of the two thugs speaks up.
"We didn't do nothin', just walkin' the same way."

Shadow moves to the front of the Plateau City Defence League headquarters and finds a place to hide. As he watches, he can hear the whispered conversation through the Message spell.
Arm d20=18 Wednesday May 9th, 2007 5:48:11 AM
Smiling grimly, Arm addresses the two, "REALLY? Walking the same way as whom? If you were'nt following our two friends, you wouldn't be admitting to 'walking the same way' as they are. I think it's time for some answers, and if the two of you would like to see the morning sun, I suggest that you make them truthful and expedient." (intimidate=18). He then looks to Conner to see if he agrees, then continues, "Now, we need to know what the league is up to and what they are planning...".
Kadaz Wednesday May 9th, 2007 7:19:55 AM
Kadaz takes his axe and pounds the haft on the ground to emphasize what Arm said. Otherwise he stands silent.
Conner d20+9=22 d20+11=24 d20+16=32 Wednesday May 9th, 2007 7:31:12 AM
Conner walks purposefully towards the two thugs from the PCDL, doing his best to block any path of egress. "Been wantin' to have a word with you lot" he announces to them. If either thug tries to flee past him, the bruising fighter will reach out and grab them by the collar and haul them back [Unarmed atk hits AC=22, grapple=24]. Upon hearing Arm and the others accosting the moronic thugs, Edmund shoots Mira a look and whirls around, brandishing his rod. He makes no attempt to hide his disgust and rage as he rounds on the thugs. In fact he looks genuinely angry, and possibly enraged enough that anything might come of it. His eyes flash as he speaks, and his voice is tinged with a nastiness the others have never heard him adopt.
"Thought you'd get a chance to beat up an half-elf and make some easy money all in one go, what!? Well you two cretins are for it now! Best answer my friend here, or else this big fellow (Edmund nods towards Conner) will tear your limbs off--if I don't get a chance to turn you into exceptionally slow mice, first. I know of a particularly fleet-footed cat which would thank me for the sport." (Intimidate=22, Bluff=30)
"Hurry up, you--" Edmund says with a scowl. "My friends are impatient, and my feline friend is hungry." Edmund brandishes his rod, glowering at the thugs as he does so.

The pair don't really have anything more to say and it's becoming clear that their objective was simply to rob Edmund and Mira.

I can heal them if they get close to death, but a solid beating would be my recommendation."
Kadaz Thursday May 10th, 2007 7:01:45 PM
Kadaz thinks a good beating might tip their hand a bit now. But there's no need for these two to reinforce the others.
"I think that these two need to see the wider world. It's healthier out in the country. If they leave right now I'm sure their health won't go downhill as quickly as it will right here, right now. Tell them Edmund about the advantages of fresh country air."
Edmund d20+3=12 Thursday May 10th, 2007 9:15:07 PM ((OOC: Thanks for the markup fix, Al!))
Edmund would entirely enjoy giving them a beating, but does his best to remain calm, and only just. When Kadaz implies they should be let go--which is to say driven off--Edmund quickly agrees.
"Oh yes, I think they would find the healthful air of the country a great deal better than the pains of city life. The air tonight is the sort that might send one home with broken bones and burns over ninety percent of one's body--no, definitely best for you two fellows to get out and see the world. Immediately. For your own health."
Edmund continues to look menacingly upon the thugs, but a little less so as time passes and his initial fear-turned-to-anger diminshes, slowly being replaced by his usual congeniality. (Intimidate=12)

DM Post (ADM Scott) Friday May 11th, 2007 9:30:51 AM
The two thugs heads swivel as the different members of the group start threatening them. The taller one looks at his shorter companion to plead their case.
"We was just going to get some gold from the lady, we was. It was wrong, but not enough for you to harm us."
As the party intimates that the two should leave the city, the short thug starts to say something but then stops. He looks up at his taller companion, "Well I suppose that we could head out inta the countryside. I'm feeling it will be good fa the health."
He will look down and says very quietly, "I'm supposing ya would not let us get our stuff?" He looks up at Kadaz hoping they might let them.

The thugs will move on... (ADM Scott for DM) Monday May 14th, 2007 9:30:34 AM
The two thugs catch the coins as Kadaz tosses them up. "Well it's more than I expects, and we better get if we are to make it safely to an inn outside the city." The shorter one says to the group and to his companion. His taller companion just shakes his head in dejection and looks like he is not really happy about leaving. The two start walking away from the direction of the PCDL HQ and do not talk or even look at each other. They give no problem those that follow them (DM John will need to know which of the party follows the two thugs.)
Back at the PCDL HQ: Shadow is waiting outside the building, and is starting to wonder if anything is going to ever happen here, when Davern Barber steps out and signals to the members on watch. ((OOC: The use of the message spell is actually entirely different than how we are using it. When I had Edmund cast it, I was thinking back to our message ring from when the Crimson Shields were about. Unfortunately, this isn't a bunch of message spells cast on everyone--it's just the one spell. Here's the PHB text for Message (PHB 253):
You can whisper messages and receive whispered replies with little chance of being overheard. You point your finger at each creature you want to receive the message. When you whisper, the whispered message is audible to all targeted creatures within range. Magical silence, 1 foot of sone, 1 inch of common metal (or a sheet of lead), or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks the spell. The message does not have to travel in a straight line. It can circumvent a barrier if there is an open path between you and the subject, and the path's entire length lies within the spell's range. The creatures that receive the message can whisper a reply that you can hear. The spell transmits sound, not meaning. It doesn't transcend language barriers. Note: to speak a message you must mouth the words and whisper, possibly allowing observers the opportunity to read your lips. Focus: A short piece of copper wire.
In Edmund's case the maximum range is 160ft., and the duration is 60 minutes. Apparently, the way the spell works is that Edmund can speak to up to 6 targets, and they can reply to him alone. The targets cannot hear each other, and targets cannot hear or respond to Edmund if the shortest unblocked path between Edmund and them exceeds 160 ft.
I apologise for not knowing my own spells. I acted from memory rather than looking it up. DM, feel free to assign whatever penalty you feel appropriate. Also, do you want to continue using the spell as-is, or would you like to change it in some way?
Once again everyone, I'm sorry.))

When Kadaz sets off for the League Headquarters again, Edmund heaves a sigh. "No kettle then, eh?" he mumbles to himself. "I'm certain the very great adventurers even had time for tea and biscuits in between rescuing dragons and slaying damosels. Or whatever."
Sullenly, he follows after Kadaz, wondering if there is a spell to turn Davern Barber into a biscuit-filled pinata. Edmund rests one hand on the Rod of Wonder as he considers it, imagining the prospects.
"Biscuits galore..." he says quietly to himself as he trudges along. "All the biscuits I could eat..."

Out on the Town (DM JohnP) Tuesday May 15th, 2007 10:27:14 PM
Most of the party see off the two thugs, Conner and Arm going so far as to begin following the pair to the nearest City gate. Well, no gate is actually all that close to Trade Quarter, and the two thugs start heading east, either towards Castle Gate or the Black Gate. Either way, that means passing through Rogue Quarter and Nightmare Quarter. And Nightmare Quarter isn't all that pleasant even in the day time.
At the same time, Kadaz, Edmund and Kirsten start heading back towards the headquarters of the Plateau City Defense League. Mira takes a moment to gauge the passage of time by looking at the stars, judging that the Message spell is nearly about to end.
Everyone is beginning to move when Shadow whispers the message that Davern Barber has left the headquarters. This prompts a flurry of movement as some people race back and the others try to hustle the thugs along.
However, it turns out to be a false alarm. Barber and his helper go down the block a short distance to shuttered store. After knocking on the door, Barber and the PCDL thug go inside and shortly return with several packages. The thug is carrying most of the packages and Barber directs him back to the headquarters, closing the front entrance behind the pair.
Shadow has returned to his hiding place to see Kadaz and the others coming back up the street. He's just thinking of how to hide both Edmund and Kirsten when a message comes from Arm and Conner that they have returned to Open Palm Market.
Spot checks from everyone, please.

The lieutenant of the Plateau City Defense League must have somehow slipped out the back of the headquarters and moved through some alleyways before coming to the street. It was probably simply chance that Shadow spotted Barber.
Through the Message spell, Shadow can tell the others what he has seen. Barber is keeping to the shadows as he moves but Shadow can keep him in sight. It will be a matter of moments before Barber passes the hidden members of the party.

Kirsten Thursday May 17th, 2007 7:11:35 PM
Kirsten, after she hears the news, doesn't seem sure as to what action she will take. Should she follow him? Or should she head back to the apartment and wait to see what will happen? The paladin, knowing that her armor makes it near impossible for her to hide efficiently, opts to stay behind for now.
Kadaz Thursday May 17th, 2007 10:05:31 PM
Kadaz turns around to see Edmund following him back to the Defense League's home. He stops and steps aside to let the mage catch up. He picks up his arm and gives Edmund a hearty slap on the back. "That's the spirit Ed! Let's go back and find these bigots. You cast the spells and I'll swing my axe. We'll take care of them!" He slaps Edmund again, then takes off again.
Following Barber (DM JohnP) Thursday May 17th, 2007 11:30:00 PM
Shadow and Arm fall into behind Davern Barber as the lieutenant of the Plateau City Defense League walks east through Trade Quarter. The human enters Open Palm Market and turns south, making his way towards the bridge crossing the Endless River. Arm and Shadow hold up for a moment at the edge of the market square so as to not follow the man too closely.
The rest of the party follow somewhere behind, keeping their distance behind the pair who are clsoely tailing Barber. It seems that the man is heading outside of Trade Quarter, as MacConal suggested, since Barber is now halfway across the bridge. At this time of night, there is very little traffic in the City although there are some old men standing on the bridge, holding fishing poles and staring into the rapidly flowing water.
Once he is on the south side of the River and in Outcast Quarter, Barber heads directly into the narrow streets of this exotic section of Plateau City. Arm and Shadow manage to keep him in sight, though, as Barber makes his way towards the wall. Finally, Barber enters a small square not too far from the Temple to Domi. Something looks unusual, though, in this square for there is a low iron fence around something in the middle of the square. Still, this seems to be Barber's destination since he goes directly to that fence and removes something from under his cloak. From where Arm and Shadow are standing, they can't really tell what Barber is doing beside the fence.
The rest of the party move closer until they are nearly right behind the pair of scouts. It's a good thing, too, since Edmund's Message spell chooses to end at that time. Maybe there's time to replace, maybe not. Regardless, Arm and Shadow now see Barber climb over the fence and then disappear. From what they could tell, Barber seemed to be lowering himself down into a hole or something.

Acknowledging Arm's suggestion, Conner follows the rogue and the bard...but not too closely.
It is very hard for the burly fighter to hide (Hide=9) or move in a stealthy fashion (Move Silently=7) and he very nearly gives up.
Still, he is part of a team, so he tries his best. Secretly, he would just like to grab the man, and beat some sense into him...

Thar, seeing that everyone is eventually following Barber, will leave his spot surreptitiously and take the rear position in the staggered line of PC's following Barber.
Edmund Friday May 18th, 2007 5:36:42 PM
Edmund staggers when Kadaz claps him on the back, his eyes goggling about in their sockets as he recovers himself. "Wha-wha-yes..." Edmund manages to stutter before Kadaz claps him on the back again, resulting in another round of stumbling, and nearly resulting in Edmund tipping over on the spot.
Once Kadaz pips off down the lane a bit farther, Edmund grabs the rod off of his belt loop and does his best to look fierce. He succeeds only in looking mildly constipated and a bit perplexed. Hopefully his spells will be somewhat more successful.

Looking Over the Edge (DM JohnP) Friday May 18th, 2007 11:40:45 PM
Conner and Mira stay back in the dark streets with Thar, Edmund and Kirsten. Kadaz is somewhere close by, too. All of them are far enough back that Davern Barber doesn't notice any noise that make.
Arm and Shadow are up ahead, near where the street enters the small square where they can better observe Davern Barber. From where they stand, it looked like Barber had taken a coil of rope from under his cloak and tied it near the bottom of the fence. That is confirmed when Shadow and Arm sneak close after Barber disappears from sight.
As they approach the fence, Arm and Shadow can see that it surrounds a gaping hole in the pavement. A hole, it seems, very much like the sinkhole that the group had explored not long after the Troubles. Except that a slight, but noticeable, odour surrounds the hole. The best guess is that the neighbourhood has been using the hole as a garbage dump since it opened up.
When they get close, Arm and Shadow can see the rope jerking as Barber descends. Then it goes still, presumably meaning that Barber has reached the bottom. Standing some distance back from the fence, the pair cannot see the bottom of the sinkhole but they guess that it's 50 feet or more below street level. Arm can hear movement from down below, as if someone were walking around the edge of a refuse pile.
When they creep closer, their elven vision allows them to see deeper into the hole than a human could. Arm and Shadow can see a figure in the sinkhole, holding a small lantern or torch that illuminates the floor of the sinkhole. The shadows cast by the lamp obscure details, but they can see that the bottom of the sinkhole is covered with garbage. As they watch, Barber enters a deeper patch of shadow where a tunnel leads away from the sinkhole.
Kadaz d20+1=5 Sunday May 20th, 2007 9:13:36 AM
Kadaz moves up to join the others clustered around the hole. "We gotta follow him. This seems too suspicious. Who's with me?" Kadaz stands next to the hole and jumps in, slowly floating to the ground. As he descends he carefully scans the hole, looking for threats. But he is actually too busy thinking that at last he's found a use for this ring of feather falling. (spot 5)

After Shadow seems to beckon to them, Edmund follows along, but halts when he comes to the fence surrounding the garbage hole. Scrunching up his nose, Edmund's verbosity manifests itself in but a single word-- "Ugh."
Turning around on his heels, he returns to Mira and the others and shakes his head. "They've gone down into a garbage pit," he says matter-of-factly. "There is no way I'm going down into a garbage pit! Besides, someone will need to stay up here and see that, ah, the scoundrels don't find their way out by another way."
Edmund glances back over to the fenced-off hole. "What is with you fellows," he asks plaintively. "It seems everywhere you go, there are piles of filth and incomparably loathsome smells. Can't we, just once, have an adventure in a flower garden, or a perfume shoppe?"

"Give me a hand, will you?" she asks Arm, as she prepares to go down the hole. "Edmund, it's likely nothing a little prestidigitation can't clean up!" she adds, with a grin.

Into the Dark (DM JohnP) Tuesday May 22nd, 2007 11:06:23 PM OOC - Apologies. Between yesterday being a public holiday here and moving our tabletop game to last night, I thought yesterday was Sunday and forgot to post.
When everyone joins Shadow and Arm at the top of the hole, they all agree on three things. The first thing is that the hole is dark, really dark. So dark that only Kadaz, with his dwarven darkvision will be able to see very much. Even those with elven blood will need some kind of light source, especially when they move into any tunnels.
The second is that the hole is deep. The best guess is somewhere between 60 feet and 80 feet.
And, above all, the third agreement is that the hole is smelly, very smelly. The best guess is months of accumulated household garbage tossed into the pit to stew, maybe with something else thrown in. Fortunately, it's still early spring and the night air is chilly. Edmund doesn't even want to consider what this place will smell like by the end of the summer.
Kadaz looks in, then climbs the fence and steps off the side before anyone can move to stop him. Fortunately, he slowly sinks downward instead of plummeting to his demise. Once he sinks out of sight, though, Birdie becomes agitated outside the fence and starts to whine.
Conner then goes over the fence, grabbing the rope and descending to the bottom. In the darkness, his human eyes reveal very little besides the stars shining through the opening of the pit and his companions' heads. The fighter doesn't move very far from the rope to take his defensive position. Birdie gets a little more excited, seeing another person disappear into this smelly hole in the ground.
Arm and Shadow follow in close order, leaving Edmund behind to complain about his burden. His complaints are cut short when Kirsten climbs over the fence and clumsily begins to climb down. That prompts some glimmer of chivalrous behaviour and Edmund assists Kirsten down the rope.
That leaves only Mira and Thar standing on the pavement, before the sorcerer also goes over the brink. Thar realizes that Birdie is nearly frantic with worry and will soon begin barking. And that will probably wake people, draw the attention of the guard or maybe alert others. And that wouldn't be good. The ranger manages to calm the dog and, more surprisingly, gets Birdie to accept donning an improvised harness that allows Thar to lower himself and the dog into the darkness.
Once everyone is at the bottom of the rope, they stare out into the darkness. The humans cannot see anything except patches of deeper shadow. But everyone can hear the sound of water - or some other liquid - falling into the pit from some height. And maybe other things. Kadaz and those with elven blood can see somewhat more.
Shadow & Arm - Highlight to display spoiler: {You can hear things moving in the pile of garbage that lies in the centre of the pit. Probably just rats.}
Those with Low Light Vision - Highlight to display spoiler: {The dim light filtering down from the entrance shows the basic outlines of a sinkhole that has been used as a wate dump. The bottom is wider than the opening at street level, probably 60 to 80 feet across with a 10 foot high pile of waste in the centre. There are patches of deeper shadow that might be entrances to tunnels or simply outcroppings.}
Kadaz (and others with Darkvision) - Highlight to display spoiler: {In addition to what those with Low Light Vision can see, darkvision provides more details of the sinkhole. The sides are rough limestone, or similar rock, that apparently collapsed during the Troubles. Water falls from a finished tunnel, probably a sewer considering the slime that coats the wall underneath. Fortunately, the path towards the tunnel that Davern Barber went through lies on the opposite side of the sinkhole. Although, your dwarven heritage tells you that the floor of the sinkhole slopes in that direction so your companions may encounter whatever is flowing from that sewer.
The garbage pile has spread nearly to the rock walls, leaving only a narrow space for people to walk. Although there are many puddles of liquid that has seeped from the garbage, creating many opportunities for Edmund to spoil his shoes.
Of course, it would probably be possible to go directly over the pile of garbage. It may not be very solid, though, and who knows what lurks inside.}
Lenny for Kadaz Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 6:05:06 AM
Ruffling Birdie's coat once he is down in the pit with them, he fishes a treat out of his pocket and hands it to him, "Good dog," he says. Gripping his axe, he says to the rest, "Follow me closely, and watch yer step...it's probably slippery. Conner, if ye'd light yer sunrod, then everyone could see better.".
He then grabs Birdie under his arm and proceeds around the edge of the pit to the opening where Barber entered. Once there, he'll set Birdie down to free up his hands for fighting.
OOC: Sorry I didn't post for Kadaz yesterday, as I only got his CS this morning.. :)
Arm d20+4=19 d20+11=13 Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 6:07:57 AM
Wanting to avoid whatever is moving around inside the garbage, Arm follows Kadaz around the edge to the opening, ever watchful for trouble, although their progress is hindering his ability to hear anything else (spot=19, listen=13).
Conner Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 7:41:16 AM
The fighter strikes his sunrod against the ground and sheilds his eyes as it flares briefly before settling down to cast a soft light some 30 feet. Conner can see almost twice that far into the shadowy illumination cast beyond that distance.
"Right, let's go!" he checks to make sure the rest of the party are ready to follow, before making his way carefully past the garbage behind Kadaz
Shadow d20+7=19 d20+2=19 Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 9:27:06 AM

Edmund Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 3:01:12 PM
Edmund pulls his rod out of its belt loop and looks around, in the illumination from Conner's sunrod. "Disgusting!" he says to the others, "Not only are they bigots, they are filthy bigots!"
Thanks to his half-elf blood, Edmund can see into the shadowy dimness beyond the immediate glow of the sunrod, too. He squints a bit, now and again, but if he is bothered by the darkness, he gives no other sign of it. In fact, he is far too disgusted with the refuse and filth to give the darkness much thought, and much care is taken to avoid stepping in anything untoward.
"I hope this is a very short walk," Edmund grumbles.
Kirsten Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 9:42:07 PM
Kirsten pulls out her warhammer as she moves to walk along behind Edmund, trusting his eyes much more than she trusts her own. She seems somewhat uneasy within the darkness, sticking unusually close to the wizard.
The paladin remains relatively silent, only murmuring quietly to Edmund, "Let me know if you see anything... interesting... in this mess."
Mira Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 10:46:38 PM
Unable to see much of anything, Mira positions herself as close to Conner and his sunrod as possible. "What do you see?" she asks in a whisper that only those close to her can hear.
Into the Stink (DM JohnP) d20+7=9 d20+8=10 Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 10:54:35 PM
Kadaz wraps his arms around Birdie, grateful that Thar has brought the loyal dog down to him. Then the dwarf moves off into the darkness. Arm carefully follows behind, picking his way around the puddles.
Behind him, Conner strikes off a sunrod and the resulting light throws shadows dancing around the bottom of the sinkhole. The pile of garbage looms beside them, about 10 feet high and spreading out towards the limits of the sinkhole. In the first blaze of light, Arm and Shadow spot movement in the garbage, what looks like large rats and a snake diving into the refuse. Mira is moving quickly to catch up with Conner, wondering what can be seen ahead.
Finally, with a lot of careful stepping, Edmund and Kirsten catch up to the others outside the entrance to the tunnel. Thar quietly follows along, too, keeping watch behind.
The seepage from the garbage pile and the runoff from the broken sewer pipe accumulate here before trickling down into the tunnel. The odour is overpowering, although Birdie seems to like it. The tunnel descends slowly before turning so that no one can see very far ahead. Obviously, there has to be some planning before the party descends into the stinking tunnel.
OOC - Can anyone sub for Thar?
Edmund Thursday May 24th, 2007 12:20:23 AM
As Edmund catches up to the rest of the order, the increasing stench from the offal turns his stomach. He gags, his free hand moving to cover his mouth.

After peering intently into the tunnel, he says to the rest, "I think it'd be best if I head down to the bend first. Arm, you follow behind, but stay halfway up the tunnel to signal the rest when I give the 'all clear'. Gripping his axe, he then picks his way carefully down the slope to the bend.
Arm d20+4=18 d20+11=13 Thursday May 24th, 2007 5:58:47 AM

Into the Tunnel (DM JohnP) Thursday May 24th, 2007 10:50:50 PM
Near the back of the group, Edmund is quietly complaining about the smell coming from the sluggish trickle of liquid flowing down the centre of the tunnel. The harsh light from the sunrod reflects back from the liquid, showing the glistening black surface. The light from the sunrod also throws the smoothed features of the tunnel into sharp relief.
Somewhat ahead of the group, Kadaz moves up to the bend and looks around. When he sees simply more tunnel, Kadaz waves Shadow ahead to check for any unpleasant surprises. Arm is also close by, looking into the shadows cast by the sunrod held by Conner.
Somewhere further back, Mira and Kirsten move along behind the scouts. And Thar stays towards the rear, keeping an eye out for anything following the party. The ranger sees nothing. Looking down, though, he sees enough tracks from the party that he figures he would be able to track Davern Barber if he needed to.
This is how the exploration continues for some time - Kadaz and Shadow near the front, the rest clustered near Conner and the sunrod and then Thar playing rearguard. Once or twice, the tunnel branches but Thar is able to pick out the correct path. At times, Kadaz notices sections of the tunnel that look to have been widened to allow passage of human-sized creatures. He also notices that the tunnel has been sloping gently downwards for some time, although anyone could tell that from the trickle of black liquid that flows in the centre of the tunnel.

Edmund stumbles along near the rear, one hand holding the rod, the other over his nose and mouth. Thankfully, this arrangement keeps him mostly silent, except for the occasional grunt or groan of disgust at the black slop down near his feet.
The the Dark (DM JohnP) Saturday May 26th, 2007 11:24:25 PM
The odour has been improving as the partyt travels deeper into limestone that lies beneath Plateau City. Possibly the small trickles of water that join and dilute the black flow of seepage from the garbage heap are doing it. Or maybe it is just that everyone's sense of smell is being worn out. Either way, no one but Edmund is complaining of the smell any longer.
Kadaz doesn't see anything of interest ahead of them in the tunnel. However, after some time walking the dwarf's darkvision picks out a point where the tunnel either widens dramatically or it opens into a large chamber. At the same time, Arm hears some echoing movement up ahead. The pair hold up their hands to halt the party some 60 feet or more back from the point where Kadaz thinks the tunnel opens into a chamber.
When the two whisper this news back, everyone from Shadow through to Thar stops. Some move ahead, but Conner stays back to keep the light source as far back as possible. Kirsten and Edmund stay close to the light.
Arm had suggested marking their path but the tunnel hasn't been too complicated so far. Thar quietly says that he would have no problem leading the party out, and Kadaz agrees.
The party now needs to decide how to proceed. Do they march ahead? Or do they send one or more scouts who can function without light ahead? Do they take any other precautions?
Thar ail Baerer Sunday May 27th, 2007 9:52:19 AM
Nodding to kadaz, despite all of the sludge and slime around them, Thar moves silently up to the front of the group and whispers to Shadow and the others near the front "Well, maybe Shadow and I should move on ahead and see what we're facing? I'd recommend everyone prepare themselves for battle, as I don't know what we're facing. Also, the light will televise our presence to whomever is in the up ahead passage, so I'd recommend Kirsten and Ed staying back for now. What do you you all think?"

"I'm of little use to you as blind as a bat, so I'll hang back with the sunrod, and when you need me, yell and I'll throw it forward and come at the run!"
Mira (AC 13+4, 46 HP)(Mage Armor) Sunday May 27th, 2007 11:39:02 PM
With words and gestures that have become second nature, the sorcerer casts a protective armor upon herself.
Lenny for Kadaz Monday May 28th, 2007 6:38:13 AM
Kadaz agrees with Thar, "I'll be comin with ye, too...the rest, be ready when we call.". He then bends down and Whispers to Birdie, "Stay close to me, boy," as he grips his axe and prepares to face whatever is coming.
Arm Monday May 28th, 2007 6:41:03 AM
Ready to follow as well, Arm says to Mira, "Coming, love?". He then gives her a quick hug and kiss and says, "For luck," as they ready themselves.
OOC: The 'for luck' reference is in homage to the original Star War's 30th anniversary...did anyone make the connection? :)
Also, Thar...Welcome back..I'll email you my address later so you can send me the souvenier your brought back for me... ;)
Shadow d20+15=30 d20+7=13 d20+2=15 Monday May 28th, 2007 10:53:51 AM
Shadow will move ahead with the group of scouts, but motions that really only him and Thar should move ahead. He will keep an eye out for any surprises just in case.
Remember I will need someone to do this next week (I leave Sunday and will not be back until the following Saturday). Thanks
Kristen Monday May 28th, 2007 8:06:32 PM
The paladin stays back near Conner and Edmund, as per instructed.
"No doubt I will be little use as a scout," she whispers. "Best wait and see what happens."
Kirsten readies her mace and waits anxiously.
Edmund Monday May 28th, 2007 8:31:03 PM
"Only too happy to be the rear-guard," Edmund says behind his hand. "Just be quick about it. Maybe it stinks less here, but it still stinks."
Edmund shakes his rod to add force to his words.
Turning back to Conner and Kirsten, Edmund grins wrly, though because of his hand this can only be seen from his eyes.
"Don't worry, you two. I'll protect you."
The Dark Cavern (DM JohnP) Monday May 28th, 2007 10:51:21 PM
Now that something definite is ahead, Thar moves past his companions towards Shadow and Kadaz at the front. The ranger/cleric has a hushed conference with the other scouts and decides to move ahead.
Before he does, though, Conner moves to limit the light cast forward by the sunrod. As the tunnel ahead is cast into near darkness, he limits his companions' ability to see. Still, there's enough light for Thar, Shadow and Arm to scout up towards the entrance to the cavern. Kadaz, of course, is a dwarf and has no need of light sources.
Meanwhile, Mira casts a protective magic while Kirsten and Edmund move closer to Conner and his light.
The four scouts (and Birdie, too) move ahead through the very dim tunnel. Nothing unusual is encountered in the tunnel. The four who remain behind watch their companions advance to the entrance of the cavern.
Beyond the dim illumination cast by the cloaked sunrod held by Conner, the cavern is simply shadows and blackness to the scouts. Except for Kadaz, of course. The immediate focus is a dim, glowing light source across the cavern. The light flickers on the rock walls of another tunnel entering (or leaving) the dark cavern. It looks to be at least 150 feet to the tunnel, although none of them can tell how far to either side the cavern spreads.
Then, their attention is caught by movement in front of the light! A person is moving through the cavern towards the light on the opposite side. The four cannot tell too much because the figure moves around some pillars or other obstructions on the floor of the cavern.
Kadaz only - Highlight to display spoiler: {Your darkvision provides more information about the cavern ahead. The floor, roof and walls are limestone, worn by long slow movement of water. You've heard about some of the cave systems that lie under the plateau's and figure that this is one of them. The passage of time has also created stalagmites on the floor of the cavern, blocking good view of the far side. You can also see the roof, probably 20 feet overhead, and that stalactites hang from it too.}
Spot, Move Silent, and all those sneaky-hidey type skills from the scouts, please
Lenny for Kadaz Tuesday May 29th, 2007 5:55:16 AM
Kadaz whispers to the rest that are with him, 'Mind your footing mates, it's pretty rocky in here...let's check that light out.".
He then begins to make his way toward the light.
OOC: FYI, I posted for Kadaz on Friday.. :)

Thar ail Baerer d20+10=26 d20+10=11 d20+10=11 d20+10=30 Tuesday May 29th, 2007 11:44:47 AM
(OOC = Also, I've got a cute Mickie Mouse doll for Arm as a gift, as I couldn't find much else that my kids didn't take first... ;-))
Thar will move ahead and take a position opposite of his companions, hoping that it helps them observe the entire area w/o leaving any holes. He'll move slowly, looking all around him and especially for tracks of various cavern dwellers.
Spot = 26 MS = 11 Listen = 11 HiS = 30
(OOC = John, I don't have my character sheet in front of me (left flash disk w/ it at home) but I think my numbers are +10 for each of these. I'll post corrected mods if needed later)
Edmund Tuesday May 29th, 2007 3:08:12 PM
Edmund squints at the sudden scurry of activity up ahead.
"Looks like trouble to me," he thinks to himself.
Conner d20+3=18 Tuesday May 29th, 2007 5:46:15 PM
The fighter maintains a quiet vigil, his light partially concealed behind his cloak such that only those behind can see the light.
Listen=18
Kirsten d20+2=5 Tuesday May 29th, 2007 6:15:20 PM
She stays and waits with Edmund and Conner, waiting to hear word from the others. Kirsten attempts to remain alert, and perhaps hear what is going on (as she certainly can't see much in the dark).
Listen = 5
Kadaz/JeffH Tuesday May 29th, 2007 9:14:00 PM

No post tonight, sorry.
I may try for early tomorrow.
Arm d20+4=24 d20+11=24 Wednesday May 30th, 2007 5:49:46 AM
As Arm carefully picks his way over the rocky terrain, he muses about the movement across the way, "I wonder if they have some kind of alarm spell or something to alert them of our arrival? Well, I guess I'll find out soon enough.". (spot=24-nat. 20-listen=24)
OOC: You're welcome Jeff, any time :)
Shadow d20+7=24 d20+2=5 d20+15=17 Wednesday May 30th, 2007 9:06:29 AM
Shadow continues to move towards the light on the far side of the 'cavern'. Trying to make sure there is nothing to alert whoever Barber is going to see.
Actions: Spot=24 Listen=5 Move Silently=17
Edmund Wednesday May 30th, 2007 3:35:46 PM
Edmund stands beside Kirsten and Conner, one hand still over his mouth, the other holding his Rod at the ready.
"These PCDL guys must be short on brains," he sniffs irritably. "Seriously, who builds their hidden base in a rotten sewer!?"
Kirsten Wednesday May 30th, 2007 6:26:32 PM
The paladin rolls her eyes at Edmund's constant complaints, and continues to wait for any word from the others.
