Moving About Town (DM JohnP) Monday April 30th, 2007 10:10:08 PM DM Apology - I did it again. I didn't post Friday night, hoping to let more people post and then didn't do it over the weekend. So, going forward, I'm going to post every weeknight.
Arm follows MacConal outside, waiting for the others to join him and decide where they will be going. Thar is outside, too, and suggests splitting up to accomplish two things. When he speaks of getting Birdie questioned by a druid, MacConal turns to look at Thar.
"Why would you want your animal questioned? Do you think that it has something to tell you about the Plateau City Defence League? I guess that you do know where their headquarters are, then. I'll be heading back home."
However, before the young elf can start walking, Mira and the others come outside. The sorcerer suggests meeting MacConal at the monument in a short time. MacConal nods and turns to Conner, suggesting another drink in the tavern while waiting.
Once MacConal returns to the bar, Shadow slips out to join the others out of sight of the entrance. A quick plan is formed: - Shadow will head directly to PCDL headquarters to put them under observation - Thar, Kadaz and Kirsten will take Birdie to a druid to be questioned - Mira, Edmund, Arm and Conner will meet MacConal at the monument
But, first, Edmund suggests using a Message spell to communicate with one another. He prepares to cast the spell on the others, Kirsten strangely having declined to accept a spell cast by her childhood friend.
With the exception of Shadow, everyone heads back to the apartment to retrieve whatever they want and make ready for an evening of investigation. After Kadaz gets his armor on, there's not much time to meet MacConal at the monument. After closing up the apartment, the party heads to Open Palm Market to wait for MacConal. At this time of night, the vendors have closed up shop and there's only a few people walking through the market. Hopefully MacConal will not run afoul of any roaming bands of PCDL thugs.
Any concern was unwarranted, though, for MacConal is soon seen striding up Riverside Road. His long hair is stirred by the slight wind that is blowing from the southeast, gently carrying the sounds of the Falls across the City.
"I'll take you close to the headquarters - it's not the friendliest place for elves, you know. Then I'll head back home. I was thinking, while I waited, that if you want to find a druid to question your animal, Thistledown, one of my friends might be able to do it? We could walk back to Hind Quarter together, too. Or, you could go to Druid Quarter and see if you can find a nature priest."
MacConal leads the party to the west, towards the road marking the boundary between Trade Quarter and Guild Quarter. He seems more cautious as he gets closer, making sure to keep near the buildings where he might be able to duck out of sight. He comes to a corner familiar to the others, and indicates that the headquarters are just ahead.
"There you go, just around there. The place with the humans and others standing and sitting around outside. I'll be going back to my home, now. Remember, I'll come by Sampson's tomorrow afternoon to hear what you learned."
With thar, MacConal starts walking east back the way he came. If Thar are walking with the elf, he will chat quietly as they head northwast until they have reached the northern loop of the river, along the other end of Riverside. When MacConal reaches the bridge to Circus Quarter that roughly marks the division between Trade Quarter and Rogue Quarter, he'll stop and look at Thar and whoever else is with him.
"If you want me to find Thistledown to question your dog, come with me to Hind Quarter. Otherwise, you should head across Rogue Quarter to Druid Quarter. Even at this time of night you should be able to find a druid without much problem.
Those with MacConal - Handle Animal DC 10 - Highlight to display spoiler: {Birdie's uneasiness has faded. There are still times, though, that she seems to feel threatened by something nearby.}

After leaving the others, Shadow makes his way to the PCDL headquarters. He is able to slip unnoticed into the alley and make his way to the back of the building. There are lights from inside that light up the backporch, so he can't get quite as close as before. Once there, he can hear the voices of Davern Barber and Fendrik Vedder from inside. He can't make out too much of what Barber is saying, though, but the slurred voice of Fendrik Vedder is easily heard.
After some time, Shadow hears the others speaking over the Message spell and he is able to relay what he has overheard.
Arm d20+4=18 d20+11=18 Tuesday May 1st, 2007 5:57:36 AM
As they approach the PCDL headquarters, Arm cannot shake the feeling that they are being led like cattle to the slaughter. As he does his best to scout the area (spot=18, listen=18), he hopes that Kadaz and company return soon.
Shadow d20+14=21 d20+2=15 d20+7=17 d20+15=35 Tuesday May 1st, 2007 9:32:29 AM
Shadow will remain where he is until he sees the leaders of the PCDL leave (or has not heard anything for a couple of minutes). He will then move back down the alley to keep an eye on the leaders. (He will keep the others informed as to what is going on.)
Thar ail Baerer d20+4=14 Tuesday May 1st, 2007 10:48:34 AM
To Ed, Thar says "I'll take the message spell."
Nodding to MacConal and enjoying the brief chat with another elf, Thar says "Its been nice chatting with you on our walk and thanks for your offer of assistance, but I've got someone in the Druid Quarter that I was planning on using. We'll see you tomorrow at Sampsons anbd hopefully we'll have some good information for you." He'll look towards Kadaz and Kirsten and see if they're ready to go find a druid.
Handle Animal Check = 14 (After they leave MacConal, he'll say this) Watching Birdie, Thar adds "Well, it seems that Birdie is calmer, but I still think something is wrong."
Once they leave MacConal, Thar will explain his deception to his companions, saying "I don't totally trust him or his recommendation for a druid. I think we can easily find a druid in the druid quarter and have our questions remain anonymous."
He'll try to find a reasonable looking druid in the quarter and query what the charge would be to speak w/ Birdie.
Edmund Tuesday May 1st, 2007 2:24:21 PM
After casting Message on everyone except for Kirsten and himself, Edmund heads off with Mira, Arm, and Conner towards the Monument. Once they arrive, and the new instructions are given, Edmund slips his rod out of the belt loop.
"Well, I suppose if it were done when 'tis done, twere well it were done quickly," he says. "I'm ready when you are."
With that, he sets off with the three others towards the headquarters of the infamous PCDL.
Conner d20+4=8 Tuesday May 1st, 2007 7:57:20 PM
Conner braces to accept the wizard's message spell, unsure of what exactly may occur. He is relieved when no bolt of lightning or beam of searing light pierces his body, and he can hear the merest whisper of his companions.
"Thanks Edmund." he acknowledges his comrades effort. "I think we need to be very careful as we proceed. It was very convenient that this particular opportunity arose so soon."
When they meet their guide at the monument, Conner stays close to the elf and tries to keeps a sharp eye for danger [Spot=8 Yuk].
Kirsten d20+11=13 Tuesday May 1st, 2007 8:14:51 PM
She leaves with Thar and Kadaz, nodding a faint farewell to MacConal.
As they are leaving, her attention turns towards Birdie and she mutters in agreement to Thar's comment, "He seems very much calmer but there is still something..." (Handle Animal Check = 13)
The paladin attempts to help Thar find a reasonable druid to ask for help. "Let's see if we can't find a druid and get to the bottom of this."
Kadaz d20+7=26 Tuesday May 1st, 2007 8:37:09 PM
Kadaz accepts the message spell before they leave. "Good idea, Edmund. If you get into trouble just call and we'll come running."
"Now, Thar and Kirsten, let's go find a druid! And find out what this little guy's thinking" Kadaz rubs Birdie's head affectionately. (handle animal 26)
On the way to find a druid Kadaz tries to get more information from Kirsten. "So, you grew up with Edmund. I find him hilarious, myself. Was he always like that."
Mira (AC 13, HP 46 )(Message) Tuesday May 1st, 2007 8:43:26 PM
"Not bad for someone who gets his magic from a book," says Mira, happy that Edmund has solved a problem for the party.
The sorcerer stays with the group checking out the PCDL headquarters, trusting that Birdie will keep the rest out of trouble.
Mira reviews some of the more complicated spells at her disposal as she waits for Shadow to check in through the message spell.
Loitering (DM JohnP) Tuesday May 1st, 2007 10:34:59 PM
Thar, Kirsten and Kadaz bid farewell to MacConal and watch the elf cross the bridge to the north side of the river. After watching for a moment, the trio continue walking towards Druid Quarter. They have to pass through the north edge of Rogue Quarter before reaching the parklike setting of Druid Quarter and they both hear and see that the theatres and other entertainments in Rogue Quarter are busy.
As they walk, both Thar and Kirsten pay attention to Birdie. But Kadaz is most familiar with his companion, and he notices that Birdie seems more relaxed as they walk. Still, from time to time, Birdie tenses and seems to look around for something unseen.
Shortly after the trio enter Druid Quarter, they find a halfling sitting crosslegged on the turf. The woman is dressed in leathers and seems to be studying a collection of fruits. She looks up when they come close, with a quizzical look.
"Is there something that I can help you with?"
++++++
Shadow continues to hear bits of the conversation between Fendrik Vedder and Davern Barber inside the headquarters of the Plateau City Defence League. He doesn't get much, just something about planning something for later this week. He can relay all of this to the others in the street.
Arm easily spots the people loitering outside the headquarters. When he looks back at ther others, Conner and Edmund particularly, he realizes that he will need to help them find a place to hide. Mira seems pretty innocuous, but the fighter and the wizard stick out like sore thumbs.
DM OOC - Trying to keep things in synch, so that's why not much for the people watching the headquarters.
Arm d20+4=14 d20+11=12 Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 5:52:16 AM
Arm quickly notices his more conspicuous companions and motions for them to follow him into the nearest alley. He then says to them, "I admit that I am not as good at finding hiding places as Shadow is, so you're pretty much on your own as far as that goes. Perhaps it is best that the two of you wander around one street over, and if something should happen, the message spell can alert you. The last thing we need is for the 'League' to discover us.".
He then returns to the mouth of the alley, where he quickly peers out (spot=14, listen=12).
Shadow d20+2=6 d20+7=15 Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 9:25:15 AM
Shadow continues to watch the back of the PCDL HQ. Whatever he does hear he will pass on using the message spell.
Actions: Listen=6 Spot=15
Edmund Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 1:11:25 PM
Edmund looks around and realises that he is a bit out of place--that is to say, there are no other rod-toting-wizards anywhere in sight.
"Right-ho," he says, and heads off to the next street over, as instructed.
Kadaz Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 5:24:26 PM
Kadaz turns to face the fruit woman. "Yes please, hopefully you can. We believe that my dog, Birdie, may have sensed something very important and we would like to talk with him. Would you know anyone able to cast an appropriate spell to make this possible?"
Thar ail Baerer Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 5:27:31 PM
Thar comments to her in a low voice so that only she, Thar and his companions can hear "Madam, we need some help with speaking to our companion here (pointing to Birdie) and wondered if you could cast a spell that would allow it. Also, we would appreciate being able to do it somewhere where we couldn't be overheard or seen, say by an invisible person nearby? What would the charge be madam?"
Kirsten d20+2=5 Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 7:45:01 PM
She sticks close to Thar and Kadaz, commenting lightly to Kadaz's question about Edmund.
"Oh, he's pretty much always been like that... seems he's mellowed out a bit, though."
When they reach the halfling woman, Kirsten regards her curiously. For the most part she allows Thar and Kadaz to do the talking, attempting to look around and see if they might have been followed. (Spot = 5)
Mira d20+11=19 d20+9=21 Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 10:55:24 PM
"Hey! Wait Ed!" Calls Mira, and she hooks an arm through the wizards, whirling him about. "Come with me!"
Mira approaches the folks loitering about the outside of the PCDL headquarters, and addressing the group, announces, "I understand this building might be up for sale. I'm looking for some new digs in this area. Mind if I have a look inside?" (Bluff=19) Scanning the group, the woman looks for the smallest, and weakest of the gang, and addresses that individual with as sweet a tone as she can muster (Diplomacy=9) "you must be the one in charge? Right? How about a guided tour of your club house?"
Mira keeps her hold on the wizard's arm, ensuring he doesn't flee.
On Both Sides of Town (DM JohnP) Wednesday May 2nd, 2007 11:33:12 PM
In Druid Quarter, three of the party speak with the Halfling that they encountered. Kadaz and Thar ask about spellcasting to speak with Birdie while Kirsten hangs back to check for any watchers. When Thar inquires about invisible watchers, the Halfling woman shrugs and stands. Standing, she's not much taller than she was when sitting. She looks over at Kadaz and says, "You might want to hold on to your companion."
After Kadaz does so, she shifts, blurring in an instant into the form of a wolf. The druid sticks her muzzle into the air and sniffs deeply, trying to catch the scent of anything nearby. Birdie tries to back behind Kadaz after being confronted by a wolf instead of a friendly Halfling.
"Thnno, thno invithibleth thnearby. Leth me cath and thee what your friend knowth."
The druid in wolf form sits still for a moment before releasing a spell. After a moment, she and Birdie whine and bark quietly to one another. When the conversation ends, the wolf looks over at the trio.
"Thomething you want to ath her?"
+++++++
Shadow sinks deeper into the shadows, listening to what he can of the conversation inside. It's not much because there's some disturbance at the front of the headquarters.
Arm is about to direct Edmund, Conner and Mira to wait out of sight on a neighboring street when Mira drags Edmund off towards the front of the headquarters. The people loitering outside the entrance look up as the pair approach, sneering when they see Edmund. Mira doesn't get any chance to launch into her spiel before the jeers and taunts start.
"Look-it the halfie! Whatcha doing here?"
"Who'd you get the ears from, your ma or pa?"
"What should we do boys?"
Edmund d20+10=24 d20+9=19 Thursday May 3rd, 2007 2:56:36 AM
As an altercation begins to form literally before his very eyes, Edmund mutters under his breath to Mira, "Most unwise."
"My apologies, Gents," he says to the PCDL men assembled before him. "You must forgive my lady. She has had a little more than she should have had this evening at a dinner party, if you catch my meaning, and I must get her home to his lordship's manor before the hour grows too late. You... you wouldn't happen to be the renowned Plateau City Defence League, would you? His lordship is much indebted to your fine service for the community, and he never stops telling us--his servants I mean, as we're elves you see--how you are doing the right thing for the city what with keeping it clean of troubling individuals. His lordship has been most strenuous on this point, and though he needs little protection with his substantial armed guard and personal cadre of knights, it just goes to show how much he cares about the common people, what what? Keep up the good work, I'm sure he'd tell you, were he here himself. As he's not, I'll be certain to pass on to the master how you're looking out for the people of the town, keeping their safety at heart. Mayhap he'll consider a suitable reward for your concern." (Bluff=24, Diplomacy=19)
Edmund hopes that the tale about Mira being the relative of a powerful lord is enough to kowtow the PCDL into leaving them alone, or if not that, then that the reference to a heavily armed group of protectors might at least frighten them into not injuring either of them. He places his hand firmly on Mira's arm and smiles gently, doing his best not to shake in his boots.
"Come along your ladyship, my lord's manor is not this way, begging your pardon. Let's leave these fellows to their good work."
Arm Thursday May 3rd, 2007 5:49:21 AM
By the time he recovers from Mira's rash act, it is too late to stop her. Slipping back into the alley a moment, Arm draws his sword, then holds it behind his back. Moving once again to the mouth of the alley, he keeps an eye open while he addresses the group through the message spell, "Mira has decided to try a frontal approach and it doesn't look good. Be ready to move on them.".
Shadow d20+7=14 d20+2=20 Thursday May 3rd, 2007 9:49:49 AM
Shadow swears to himself as he prepares to act if need be. He will pop up just a little to catch a glimpse into the interior to see if what Mira is doing has drawn the leaders out.
IF they are not there he will make to move around the building to support his comrades.
IF they do not move to the front of the building Shadow will remain where he is to see what else he might learn.
Actions: Spot=14 Listen=20
Thar ail Baerer Thursday May 3rd, 2007 10:24:22 AM
Kneeling in front of Birdie and speaking in soothing tones, Thar says "Oh faithful friend Birdie, I only have a few questions for you. What has made you so uncomfortable around that elf that we met at the eating place where we go quite often? Also, you have seemed uncomfortable at times during our walk here and is there something you're seeing or sensing that has made you feel this way?"
Conner Thursday May 3rd, 2007 6:48:11 PM
The fighter does his best to look inconspicuous as he waits for word from one street over. The ominous message from Arm about Mira's action does not sit well with the burly man, and he immediately begins to make his way closer to the PCDL headquarters. He stops at the corner, out of direct sight and waits for a call to action.
Kirsten Thursday May 3rd, 2007 7:42:36 PM
The paladin's eyes instantly turn back towards the others as the halfling transforms in such a way. The paladin's brows raising in curiousity, Kirsten not having much experience with Druids in general.
Those eyes quickly shift between Birdie and the newly transformed wolf, the woman shaking her head, clearly impressed.
Kadaz Thursday May 3rd, 2007 9:27:39 PM
Kadaz also kneels down to look into Birdie's eyes. Thar has asked everything that they need to know. "Birdie, you're my best friend Thank you." Kadaz gives Birdie a hug, regardless of how the dog answers.
Close Call (DM JohnP) d20+10=20 Thursday May 3rd, 2007 11:15:54 PM
Thar poses the questions that the trio would like answered, kadaz and Kirsten nodding agreement.
The druid in wolf form yips, whines and barks once more with Birdie. Then she stops and speaks to the trio.
"Thee thmelt thomething thrange, not lithe anything before. That's what bothered her. Not good, thee thaid."
"Thee thmelt the thmell again thoming here."
"Thee than't tell where thmell thoming from. That bothers her, too."
With that, the druid yips and barks again and Birdie wags her tail strongly.
"Told her that you'd protect her. Theep her thafe and fed, like leader should."
The driod shifts back into a halfling, crouching on the grass. She nods to the trio and then returns to her study of the fruits.
The trio can now make their way back across the City, hopefully using Edmund's magic to locate their companions.
++++++
Edmund spins a quick tale, trying to explain there presence on this street. His quick thinking might have saved him a thumping. Either that, or the slightly inebriated Plateau City Defence League goons couldn't follow what he was telling them. Still, they glare and make rude noises at Mira and the half-elf before they start moving away up the street.
Arm relays what has happened through the Message spell, making both Conner and Shadow tense for action.
The commotion is enough to draw someone from inside the headquarters. Arm sees Davern Barber come outside and speak to the supporters of the PCDL. Barber glances up the street at the departing pair but doesn't seem to react. However, a pair of thugs push themselves off the benches and begin to casually follow Mira and Edmund away.
Mira Thursday May 3rd, 2007 11:50:49 PM
"Sorry, sorry," a frustrated Mira mutters in low tone. The thwarted sorcerer fumes silently to herself at the taunts of the others. "I'd like to just fireball the whole lot of them," gets carried through the message spell, though the idea was said in low tone so that only Edmund should here.
"Very sorry, Edmund...guys," she continues quite embarrassed that the ruse failed.
Edmund Friday May 4th, 2007 12:14:28 AM
As they walk away, Edmund glances back over his shoulder, and upon spotting the PCDL men following him, makes as if he is looking around for something which might have been dropped. He turns back to Mira, speaking in a clear, distinct voice as he does so, "No, I'm afraid I don't see my ladyship's scarf--is my ladyship certain she wore one this evening?"
Edmund steers Mira towards the Druid quarter, hoping that they'll run into Kirsten and Thar. Despite his original apprehension, at this moment there is nothing Edmund wants to see than Kirsten mounted on her warhorse coming down the lane towards them.
To Mira, he says quietly, "Don't look now--but seems we have company. You might want to let the people on the message link know we're being followed by two PCDL men, and I don't think they're coming to invite us to tea."
Edmund ((Correction)) Friday May 4th, 2007 12:16:52 AM
((The above should be 'my lady' not 'my ladyship'--even as amusing/terrifying as it might be to imagine Edmund in a dress and tiara. The perils of late-nite posting strike again.
I may miss Monday's post as I return to class on Monday. Hopefully not, but just a heads-up just in case. Thanks! +Shawn))
Arm d20+4=21 d20+11=23 Friday May 4th, 2007 8:45:01 AM
Relieved that no battle has ensued at this time, Arm quickly sheathes his sword and says, through the message spell, "Mira and Ed are safe for now, but two thugs are following them. I will leave the alley this way and follow...Conner, leave the alley at the other end and meet up with me down the block...Shadow, stay where you are and let us know if there are any changes.".
He then leaves the alley at a casual pace to follow them, but taking anything but a casual observance to his surroundings (spot=21, listen=23).
Shadow d20+7=21 d20+2=17 Friday May 4th, 2007 9:22:52 AM
"Gotcha" Shadow says as Arm goes to follow the men following Mira and Edmund. Shadow tries to remain comfortable, but wants to be able to hear what is going on inside the HQ.

Thar ail Baerer Friday May 4th, 2007 2:01:09 PM
After thanking the druid, Thar gives Birdie a hug and a treat from his dried meat stash. He asks his companions "What do you think it could be in re: to smelling bad? Could the elf be in some disguise or under a polymorph or illusion spell? I'm not real happy with trusting him, but until we know more, I'm not sure we can do much else than proceed carefully."
As he walks towards the meeting place, he hears through the message spell about the tail on Mira/Ed. Softly he passes on the info to Kirsten, since she doesn't have the message spell. (I'm assuming that Kadaz does) He says "Well, I think we should carefully make our way to the group, except we should work on following Mira/Ed's pursuers, kind of like making the hunters the hunted." If they agree, he'll begin talking to the rest of his Message audience and try to coordinate their actions.
Kirsten Friday May 4th, 2007 8:43:19 PM
The paladin listens intently to what Birdie says through the druid. Smiling faintly at the dog's last little comment there, before she murmurs thoughtfully.
"You're right about being careful, I don't like the feel of this all. If he cant' figure out where the smell is coming from, then that makes things just that more difficult."
Upon hearing the news of the others, Kirsten falls somewhat silent... thoughtful.
"Why don't the two of you follow the ones that are following them, and I'll see if I can't meet up with Mira and Edmund," she looks to Thar and Kadaz. "Just in case something happens and they need a little extra help."
Kadaz Saturday May 5th, 2007 3:27:47 PM
Kadaz thanks the druid very much and also hugs Birdie. "Of course I will, you silly, silly dog. Now, let's go find the others."
Kadaz did accept the message spell so can easily coordinate with Edmund.
Since Kirsten has a plan Kadaz agrees to follow it. Seems like these paladins are thinkers.
Meeting in the Market (DM JohnP) Saturday May 5th, 2007 10:34:52 PM
Kadaz embraces Birdie before he, Thar and Kirsten leave Druid Quarter. The trio are discussing what they've learned form the druid's spell as they walk. They're making good time back to Trade Quarter since the crowds have thinned a bit. And they wonder what kind of trouble the others might have gotten into. Once, as they walk, Birdie stops and stares intently at a pair of people leaning against a building in Rogue Quarter. As soon as Kadaz realizes this, the pair split up and walk in different directions and Birdie relaxes a little. No one recognized the two people that Birdie stared at.
It's going to take some more walking before they are in the working range of the Message spell. But Open Palm Market is just up ahead and they should be getting something soon.
++++++
Mira quickly realizes her ruse has failed. Or, it might have worked and the Plateau City Defense League thugs simply reacted in a different manner. Either way, she and Edmund are now being followed by a pair of the thugs. Mira whispers through the Message spell to her companions.
Arm pushes himself away the wall after whispering through the spell to Conner and Shadow. He follows the two thugs that are, in turn, following Mira and Edmund. The pair doesn't look all that steady on their feet. Arm can't tell if the pair are trying to find out where Mira and Edmund are headed, or if they are simply looking for a pair of rich people to mug. With his senses heightened, Arm does not spot or hear anyone else moving in the street. In fact, Conner hasn't responded yet, either. Davern Barber has gone back inside.
Shadow stays where he is, tucked safely into the dark alleyway behind the PCDL headquarters. He can't hear too much until Davern Barber returns. The conversation is a bit heated, mainly Barber telling Fendrik Vedder that he has to stay sober ... or at least act sober ... over the next couple days.
Mira and Edmund lead the pair of thugs towards Open Palm Market. Once they reach the edge, Mira hears the first message from Kadaz inquiring how they are doing. Behind them, Arm sees the pair of thugs slow and stop once they see the "rich lady and retainer" move into a large, open public area. Even if Open Palm Market isn't busy at this time of night, it seems that their immediate plans have been spoiled.
DM OOC - And, from now on, everything is in time-synch. Or, it's supposed to be.
Thar ail Baerer Sunday May 6th, 2007 10:33:12 AM
Thar will stay with Kadaz and when he sees the thugs stop following Mira/Ed, he says to Kadaz (and ensurs that others in the message spell can hear) "Do you want to move and follow these two and maybe capture them for ourselves? We could question them and find out a little more about them?"
Conner d20+1=9 d20+4=24 Sunday May 6th, 2007 3:59:43 PM
The fighter responds immediately to Arm's sugestion and leaves his spot in the alley, paralleling Mira and Edmund and the trailing thugs. Once Conner sees his friends sdafely back into Open Palm Market, he stays near the edge of the market and watches the thugs from a distance. [Hide=9, Spot=24]
Mira Sunday May 6th, 2007 11:18:16 PM
"Keep walking Edmund. If I know Arm and Conner, they'll be somewhere close and we may just end upturning the tables here" Mira whispers.
Arm d20+4=24 d20+11=15 Monday May 7th, 2007 5:49:15 AM
Arm slows his pace to match that of his quarry and whispers to those who may not see what is transpiring, "They've slowed up a bit now that we're approaching the Open Palm..if they break off their pursuit, I'm still going to follow them.". He then says for Mira's benefit, "Chin up, love...we are watching and will keep you safe.".
He then tries to remain as inconspicuous as possible as he keeps an eye on the thugs (spot=24 - nat. 20, listen=15).
Kadaz Monday May 7th, 2007 6:51:49 AM
"Good idea Thar. Let's capture these two." He then messages to Mira to arrange a capture. "They don't like the open. Take a side stree that is dark. I'm sure they'll follow and we'll be right behind them. That way we can take them and not be as obvious about it."
Shadow d20+2=15 d20+7=17 Monday May 7th, 2007 11:42:25 AM
Hearing all of this Shadow feels he should be with the group, but remaining here is more important right now so he remains where he is. He will continue trying to hear what the group is talking about, but it does not seem like anything is going to happen today.
Edmund Monday May 7th, 2007 3:16:00 PM
Edmund nods to Mira, doing his best not to glance back over his shoulder as he continues to lead her into the centre of the Market, "Of course, my lady," he says. "It's not far now."
Crossing the Market in the Middle of the Night (DM JohnP) Monday May 7th, 2007 10:41:14 PM
Bolstered by the whispered support of their companions, Mira and Edmund walk directly across Open Palm Market. A bit of coaching from Thar and Kadaz is enough to direct them to the shadowy street where the trio returning from the Druid Quarter are waiting.
Behind Mira and Edmund, the pair of Plateau City Defence League thugs hesitate for a moment before beginning to walk acoss the market square. They don't notice anyone moving behind them, so Arm and Conner are able to keep pace. The pair of thugs seem to be walking quickly, trying to catch up with Mira and Edmund without actually running.
The quick communication between the members of the Mithril Order has set the stage for a trap. Or, the trio could simply make themselves known and scare the thugs off. It depends, really, on what Kirsten decides but the paladin has been quiet.

Meanwhile, back at the headquarters, Shadow listens to a one-sided drunken argument. It finally ends with Fendrik Vedder shouting something unintelligible at Davern Barber and then banging through the back door of the headquarters. Vedder sways and tightly grips the stair railing as he climbs to the second floor of the building. Mutters about "inconsiderate oafs" and "thankless work" and "miss them so ..." can be heard as Vedder struggles with the upper door. Then he makes his way inside.
Nothing can be heard from the back room of the headquarters.
Arm d20+4=10 d20+11=30 Tuesday May 8th, 2007 5:47:05 AM
Arm agrees with the trap plan, and says to Mira, "We will be right behind you, and I think it best we put these two out of commission for a bit.". He then tries to look ahead to find an appropriate spot to spring their trap, but watching the thugs at the same time seems too much for one person to do (spot=10, listen=30).
Conner d20+2=14 d20+1=12 Tuesday May 8th, 2007 7:30:16 AM
The tattooed fighter circles the edge of the market area and tries to position himself to close off any escape routes for the two thugs should they pursue Mira and the mage into an alley.

Mira Tuesday May 8th, 2007 7:34:39 AM

Thar will continue following the thugs and do his best to remain silent and hidden, and whispers (via message spell) "OK, how do we want to spring this trap? Who wants to do the talking and intimidating the thugs? Conner, Arm and Kadaz, who's the best at looking big and mean?"

Edmund Tuesday May 8th, 2007 2:33:06 PM
Edmund continues alongside Mira, nodding and pretending to carry on a conversation with her so as to prevent the thugs behind them from realising that their presence is known. At the same time, Edmund carefully slips his rod from his belt loop to his hand, taking a moment to whisper under his breath to Mira.
"Have them tell us when they're ready, and we'll turn about suddenly and close the net on these boobs before they realise what is happening."
Kadaz Tuesday May 8th, 2007 5:13:30 PM
"I think Conner is the most intimidating, but I swing a pretty mean axe. Let's advance on them and take them alive."
Kirsten d20+2=12 Tuesday May 8th, 2007 6:18:01 PM
The Paladin, in her armor, knows that it is rather futile for her to try to hide within the shadows as the others are. So she sucks in a deep breath when she sees Mira and Edmund heading into that street, and walks towards them steadily. Kirsten does her best to appear rather annoyed, and more than a little impatient as she approaches them.
"I have been looking all about the city for you!" she exclaims, as she moves closer to Mira and Edmund. "My Lady, it is dangerous to be wandering the streets so late. The lord is sick with worry."
Kirsten bows subtly to Mira, ignoring Edmund completely.
"Allow me to accompany you home."

And the Thugs go 'Oops' (DM JohnP) Tuesday May 8th, 2007 10:08:27 PM
Kirsten steps out and speaks to Mira and Edmund, trying to follow what was relayed by Kadaz and Thar. Her armor has been polished enough to reflect what little light enters the street. Enough reflections for the two thugs from the Plateau City Defence League to stop and begin to retreat.
It's then that they notice Conner and Arm approaching from behind them, plus Kadaz and Thar where they have been standing. The pair glance in all direction, apparently judging their chances of outrunning any pursuit. They don't like what they see, so they simply stand there waiting for the party to approach. When the party gets close, the shorter of the two thugs speaks up.
"We didn't do nothin', just walkin' the same way."

Shadow moves to the front of the Plateau City Defence League headquarters and finds a place to hide. As he watches, he can hear the whispered conversation through the Message spell.
Arm d20=18 Wednesday May 9th, 2007 5:48:11 AM
Smiling grimly, Arm addresses the two, "REALLY? Walking the same way as whom? If you were'nt following our two friends, you wouldn't be admitting to 'walking the same way' as they are. I think it's time for some answers, and if the two of you would like to see the morning sun, I suggest that you make them truthful and expedient." (intimidate=18). He then looks to Conner to see if he agrees, then continues, "Now, we need to know what the league is up to and what they are planning...".
Kadaz Wednesday May 9th, 2007 7:19:55 AM
Kadaz takes his axe and pounds the haft on the ground to emphasize what Arm said. Otherwise he stands silent.
Conner d20+9=22 d20+11=24 d20+16=32 Wednesday May 9th, 2007 7:31:12 AM
Conner walks purposefully towards the two thugs from the PCDL, doing his best to block any path of egress. "Been wantin' to have a word with you lot" he announces to them. If either thug tries to flee past him, the bruising fighter will reach out and grab them by the collar and haul them back [Unarmed atk hits AC=22, grapple=24]. Upon hearing Arm and the others accosting the moronic thugs, Edmund shoots Mira a look and whirls around, brandishing his rod. He makes no attempt to hide his disgust and rage as he rounds on the thugs. In fact he looks genuinely angry, and possibly enraged enough that anything might come of it. His eyes flash as he speaks, and his voice is tinged with a nastiness the others have never heard him adopt.
"Thought you'd get a chance to beat up an half-elf and make some easy money all in one go, what!? Well you two cretins are for it now! Best answer my friend here, or else this big fellow (Edmund nods towards Conner) will tear your limbs off--if I don't get a chance to turn you into exceptionally slow mice, first. I know of a particularly fleet-footed cat which would thank me for the sport." (Intimidate=22, Bluff=30)
"Hurry up, you--" Edmund says with a scowl. "My friends are impatient, and my feline friend is hungry." Edmund brandishes his rod, glowering at the thugs as he does so.

The pair don't really have anything more to say and it's becoming clear that their objective was simply to rob Edmund and Mira.

I can heal them if they get close to death, but a solid beating would be my recommendation."
Kadaz Thursday May 10th, 2007 7:01:45 PM
Kadaz thinks a good beating might tip their hand a bit now. But there's no need for these two to reinforce the others.
"I think that these two need to see the wider world. It's healthier out in the country. If they leave right now I'm sure their health won't go downhill as quickly as it will right here, right now. Tell them Edmund about the advantages of fresh country air."
Edmund d20+3=12 Thursday May 10th, 2007 9:15:07 PM ((OOC: Thanks for the markup fix, Al!))
Edmund would entirely enjoy giving them a beating, but does his best to remain calm, and only just. When Kadaz implies they should be let go--which is to say driven off--Edmund quickly agrees.
"Oh yes, I think they would find the healthful air of the country a great deal better than the pains of city life. The air tonight is the sort that might send one home with broken bones and burns over ninety percent of one's body--no, definitely best for you two fellows to get out and see the world. Immediately. For your own health."
Edmund continues to look menacingly upon the thugs, but a little less so as time passes and his initial fear-turned-to-anger diminshes, slowly being replaced by his usual congeniality. (Intimidate=12)

DM Post (ADM Scott) Friday May 11th, 2007 9:30:51 AM
The two thugs heads swivel as the different members of the group start threatening them. The taller one looks at his shorter companion to plead their case.
"We was just going to get some gold from the lady, we was. It was wrong, but not enough for you to harm us."
As the party intimates that the two should leave the city, the short thug starts to say something but then stops. He looks up at his taller companion, "Well I suppose that we could head out inta the countryside. I'm feeling it will be good fa the health."
He will look down and says very quietly, "I'm supposing ya would not let us get our stuff?" He looks up at Kadaz hoping they might let them.

The thugs will move on... (ADM Scott for DM) Monday May 14th, 2007 9:30:34 AM
The two thugs catch the coins as Kadaz tosses them up. "Well it's more than I expects, and we better get if we are to make it safely to an inn outside the city." The shorter one says to the group and to his companion. His taller companion just shakes his head in dejection and looks like he is not really happy about leaving. The two start walking away from the direction of the PCDL HQ and do not talk or even look at each other. They give no problem those that follow them (DM John will need to know which of the party follows the two thugs.)
Back at the PCDL HQ: Shadow is waiting outside the building, and is starting to wonder if anything is going to ever happen here, when Davern Barber steps out and signals to the members on watch. ((OOC: The use of the message spell is actually entirely different than how we are using it. When I had Edmund cast it, I was thinking back to our message ring from when the Crimson Shields were about. Unfortunately, this isn't a bunch of message spells cast on everyone--it's just the one spell. Here's the PHB text for Message (PHB 253):
You can whisper messages and receive whispered replies with little chance of being overheard. You point your finger at each creature you want to receive the message. When you whisper, the whispered message is audible to all targeted creatures within range. Magical silence, 1 foot of sone, 1 inch of common metal (or a sheet of lead), or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks the spell. The message does not have to travel in a straight line. It can circumvent a barrier if there is an open path between you and the subject, and the path's entire length lies within the spell's range. The creatures that receive the message can whisper a reply that you can hear. The spell transmits sound, not meaning. It doesn't transcend language barriers. Note: to speak a message you must mouth the words and whisper, possibly allowing observers the opportunity to read your lips. Focus: A short piece of copper wire.
In Edmund's case the maximum range is 160ft., and the duration is 60 minutes. Apparently, the way the spell works is that Edmund can speak to up to 6 targets, and they can reply to him alone. The targets cannot hear each other, and targets cannot hear or respond to Edmund if the shortest unblocked path between Edmund and them exceeds 160 ft.
I apologise for not knowing my own spells. I acted from memory rather than looking it up. DM, feel free to assign whatever penalty you feel appropriate. Also, do you want to continue using the spell as-is, or would you like to change it in some way?
Once again everyone, I'm sorry.))

When Kadaz sets off for the League Headquarters again, Edmund heaves a sigh. "No kettle then, eh?" he mumbles to himself. "I'm certain the very great adventurers even had time for tea and biscuits in between rescuing dragons and slaying damosels. Or whatever."
Sullenly, he follows after Kadaz, wondering if there is a spell to turn Davern Barber into a biscuit-filled pinata. Edmund rests one hand on the Rod of Wonder as he considers it, imagining the prospects.
"Biscuits galore..." he says quietly to himself as he trudges along. "All the biscuits I could eat..."

Out on the Town (DM JohnP) Tuesday May 15th, 2007 10:27:14 PM
Most of the party see off the two thugs, Conner and Arm going so far as to begin following the pair to the nearest City gate. Well, no gate is actually all that close to Trade Quarter, and the two thugs start heading east, either towards Castle Gate or the Black Gate. Either way, that means passing through Rogue Quarter and Nightmare Quarter. And Nightmare Quarter isn't all that pleasant even in the day time.
At the same time, Kadaz, Edmund and Kirsten start heading back towards the headquarters of the Plateau City Defense League. Mira takes a moment to gauge the passage of time by looking at the stars, judging that the Message spell is nearly about to end.
Everyone is beginning to move when Shadow whispers the message that Davern Barber has left the headquarters. This prompts a flurry of movement as some people race back and the others try to hustle the thugs along.
However, it turns out to be a false alarm. Barber and his helper go down the block a short distance to shuttered store. After knocking on the door, Barber and the PCDL thug go inside and shortly return with several packages. The thug is carrying most of the packages and Barber directs him back to the headquarters, closing the front entrance behind the pair.
Shadow has returned to his hiding place to see Kadaz and the others coming back up the street. He's just thinking of how to hide both Edmund and Kirsten when a message comes from Arm and Conner that they have returned to Open Palm Market.
Spot checks from everyone, please.

The lieutenant of the Plateau City Defense League must have somehow slipped out the back of the headquarters and moved through some alleyways before coming to the street. It was probably simply chance that Shadow spotted Barber.
Through the Message spell, Shadow can tell the others what he has seen. Barber is keeping to the shadows as he moves but Shadow can keep him in sight. It will be a matter of moments before Barber passes the hidden members of the party.

Kirsten Thursday May 17th, 2007 7:11:35 PM
Kirsten, after she hears the news, doesn't seem sure as to what action she will take. Should she follow him? Or should she head back to the apartment and wait to see what will happen? The paladin, knowing that her armor makes it near impossible for her to hide efficiently, opts to stay behind for now.
Kadaz Thursday May 17th, 2007 10:05:31 PM
Kadaz turns around to see Edmund following him back to the Defense League's home. He stops and steps aside to let the mage catch up. He picks up his arm and gives Edmund a hearty slap on the back. "That's the spirit Ed! Let's go back and find these bigots. You cast the spells and I'll swing my axe. We'll take care of them!" He slaps Edmund again, then takes off again.
Following Barber (DM JohnP) Thursday May 17th, 2007 11:30:00 PM
Shadow and Arm fall into behind Davern Barber as the lieutenant of the Plateau City Defense League walks east through Trade Quarter. The human enters Open Palm Market and turns south, making his way towards the bridge crossing the Endless River. Arm and Shadow hold up for a moment at the edge of the market square so as to not follow the man too closely.
The rest of the party follow somewhere behind, keeping their distance behind the pair who are clsoely tailing Barber. It seems that the man is heading outside of Trade Quarter, as MacConal suggested, since Barber is now halfway across the bridge. At this time of night, there is very little traffic in the City although there are some old men standing on the bridge, holding fishing poles and staring into the rapidly flowing water.
Once he is on the south side of the River and in Outcast Quarter, Barber heads directly into the narrow streets of this exotic section of Plateau City. Arm and Shadow manage to keep him in sight, though, as Barber makes his way towards the wall. Finally, Barber enters a small square not too far from the Temple to Domi. Something looks unusual, though, in this square for there is a low iron fence around something in the middle of the square. Still, this seems to be Barber's destination since he goes directly to that fence and removes something from under his cloak. From where Arm and Shadow are standing, they can't really tell what Barber is doing beside the fence.
The rest of the party move closer until they are nearly right behind the pair of scouts. It's a good thing, too, since Edmund's Message spell chooses to end at that time. Maybe there's time to replace, maybe not. Regardless, Arm and Shadow now see Barber climb over the fence and then disappear. From what they could tell, Barber seemed to be lowering himself down into a hole or something.

Acknowledging Arm's suggestion, Conner follows the rogue and the bard...but not too closely.
It is very hard for the burly fighter to hide (Hide=9) or move in a stealthy fashion (Move Silently=7) and he very nearly gives up.
Still, he is part of a team, so he tries his best. Secretly, he would just like to grab the man, and beat some sense into him...

Thar, seeing that everyone is eventually following Barber, will leave his spot surreptitiously and take the rear position in the staggered line of PC's following Barber.
Edmund Friday May 18th, 2007 5:36:42 PM
Edmund staggers when Kadaz claps him on the back, his eyes goggling about in their sockets as he recovers himself. "Wha-wha-yes..." Edmund manages to stutter before Kadaz claps him on the back again, resulting in another round of stumbling, and nearly resulting in Edmund tipping over on the spot.
Once Kadaz pips off down the lane a bit farther, Edmund grabs the rod off of his belt loop and does his best to look fierce. He succeeds only in looking mildly constipated and a bit perplexed. Hopefully his spells will be somewhat more successful.

Looking Over the Edge (DM JohnP) Friday May 18th, 2007 11:40:45 PM
Conner and Mira stay back in the dark streets with Thar, Edmund and Kirsten. Kadaz is somewhere close by, too. All of them are far enough back that Davern Barber doesn't notice any noise that make.
Arm and Shadow are up ahead, near where the street enters the small square where they can better observe Davern Barber. From where they stand, it looked like Barber had taken a coil of rope from under his cloak and tied it near the bottom of the fence. That is confirmed when Shadow and Arm sneak close after Barber disappears from sight.
As they approach the fence, Arm and Shadow can see that it surrounds a gaping hole in the pavement. A hole, it seems, very much like the sinkhole that the group had explored not long after the Troubles. Except that a slight, but noticeable, odour surrounds the hole. The best guess is that the neighbourhood has been using the hole as a garbage dump since it opened up.
When they get close, Arm and Shadow can see the rope jerking as Barber descends. Then it goes still, presumably meaning that Barber has reached the bottom. Standing some distance back from the fence, the pair cannot see the bottom of the sinkhole but they guess that it's 50 feet or more below street level. Arm can hear movement from down below, as if someone were walking around the edge of a refuse pile.
When they creep closer, their elven vision allows them to see deeper into the hole than a human could. Arm and Shadow can see a figure in the sinkhole, holding a small lantern or torch that illuminates the floor of the sinkhole. The shadows cast by the lamp obscure details, but they can see that the bottom of the sinkhole is covered with garbage. As they watch, Barber enters a deeper patch of shadow where a tunnel leads away from the sinkhole.
Kadaz d20+1=5 Sunday May 20th, 2007 9:13:36 AM
Kadaz moves up to join the others clustered around the hole. "We gotta follow him. This seems too suspicious. Who's with me?" Kadaz stands next to the hole and jumps in, slowly floating to the ground. As he descends he carefully scans the hole, looking for threats. But he is actually too busy thinking that at last he's found a use for this ring of feather falling. (spot 5)

After Shadow seems to beckon to them, Edmund follows along, but halts when he comes to the fence surrounding the garbage hole. Scrunching up his nose, Edmund's verbosity manifests itself in but a single word-- "Ugh."
Turning around on his heels, he returns to Mira and the others and shakes his head. "They've gone down into a garbage pit," he says matter-of-factly. "There is no way I'm going down into a garbage pit! Besides, someone will need to stay up here and see that, ah, the scoundrels don't find their way out by another way."
Edmund glances back over to the fenced-off hole. "What is with you fellows," he asks plaintively. "It seems everywhere you go, there are piles of filth and incomparably loathsome smells. Can't we, just once, have an adventure in a flower garden, or a perfume shoppe?"

"Give me a hand, will you?" she asks Arm, as she prepares to go down the hole. "Edmund, it's likely nothing a little prestidigitation can't clean up!" she adds, with a grin.

Into the Dark (DM JohnP) Tuesday May 22nd, 2007 11:06:23 PM OOC - Apologies. Between yesterday being a public holiday here and moving our tabletop game to last night, I thought yesterday was Sunday and forgot to post.
When everyone joins Shadow and Arm at the top of the hole, they all agree on three things. The first thing is that the hole is dark, really dark. So dark that only Kadaz, with his dwarven darkvision will be able to see very much. Even those with elven blood will need some kind of light source, especially when they move into any tunnels.
The second is that the hole is deep. The best guess is somewhere between 60 feet and 80 feet.
And, above all, the third agreement is that the hole is smelly, very smelly. The best guess is months of accumulated household garbage tossed into the pit to stew, maybe with something else thrown in. Fortunately, it's still early spring and the night air is chilly. Edmund doesn't even want to consider what this place will smell like by the end of the summer.
Kadaz looks in, then climbs the fence and steps off the side before anyone can move to stop him. Fortunately, he slowly sinks downward instead of plummeting to his demise. Once he sinks out of sight, though, Birdie becomes agitated outside the fence and starts to whine.
Conner then goes over the fence, grabbing the rope and descending to the bottom. In the darkness, his human eyes reveal very little besides the stars shining through the opening of the pit and his companions' heads. The fighter doesn't move very far from the rope to take his defensive position. Birdie gets a little more excited, seeing another person disappear into this smelly hole in the ground.
Arm and Shadow follow in close order, leaving Edmund behind to complain about his burden. His complaints are cut short when Kirsten climbs over the fence and clumsily begins to climb down. That prompts some glimmer of chivalrous behaviour and Edmund assists Kirsten down the rope.
That leaves only Mira and Thar standing on the pavement, before the sorcerer also goes over the brink. Thar realizes that Birdie is nearly frantic with worry and will soon begin barking. And that will probably wake people, draw the attention of the guard or maybe alert others. And that wouldn't be good. The ranger manages to calm the dog and, more surprisingly, gets Birdie to accept donning an improvised harness that allows Thar to lower himself and the dog into the darkness.
Once everyone is at the bottom of the rope, they stare out into the darkness. The humans cannot see anything except patches of deeper shadow. But everyone can hear the sound of water - or some other liquid - falling into the pit from some height. And maybe other things. Kadaz and those with elven blood can see somewhat more.
Shadow & Arm - Highlight to display spoiler: {You can hear things moving in the pile of garbage that lies in the centre of the pit. Probably just rats.}
Those with Low Light Vision - Highlight to display spoiler: {The dim light filtering down from the entrance shows the basic outlines of a sinkhole that has been used as a wate dump. The bottom is wider than the opening at street level, probably 60 to 80 feet across with a 10 foot high pile of waste in the centre. There are patches of deeper shadow that might be entrances to tunnels or simply outcroppings.}
Kadaz (and others with Darkvision) - Highlight to display spoiler: {In addition to what those with Low Light Vision can see, darkvision provides more details of the sinkhole. The sides are rough limestone, or similar rock, that apparently collapsed during the Troubles. Water falls from a finished tunnel, probably a sewer considering the slime that coats the wall underneath. Fortunately, the path towards the tunnel that Davern Barber went through lies on the opposite side of the sinkhole. Although, your dwarven heritage tells you that the floor of the sinkhole slopes in that direction so your companions may encounter whatever is flowing from that sewer.
The garbage pile has spread nearly to the rock walls, leaving only a narrow space for people to walk. Although there are many puddles of liquid that has seeped from the garbage, creating many opportunities for Edmund to spoil his shoes.
Of course, it would probably be possible to go directly over the pile of garbage. It may not be very solid, though, and who knows what lurks inside.}
Lenny for Kadaz Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 6:05:06 AM
Ruffling Birdie's coat once he is down in the pit with them, he fishes a treat out of his pocket and hands it to him, "Good dog," he says. Gripping his axe, he says to the rest, "Follow me closely, and watch yer step...it's probably slippery. Conner, if ye'd light yer sunrod, then everyone could see better.".
He then grabs Birdie under his arm and proceeds around the edge of the pit to the opening where Barber entered. Once there, he'll set Birdie down to free up his hands for fighting.
OOC: Sorry I didn't post for Kadaz yesterday, as I only got his CS this morning.. :)
Arm d20+4=19 d20+11=13 Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 6:07:57 AM
Wanting to avoid whatever is moving around inside the garbage, Arm follows Kadaz around the edge to the opening, ever watchful for trouble, although their progress is hindering his ability to hear anything else (spot=19, listen=13).
Conner Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 7:41:16 AM
The fighter strikes his sunrod against the ground and sheilds his eyes as it flares briefly before settling down to cast a soft light some 30 feet. Conner can see almost twice that far into the shadowy illumination cast beyond that distance.
"Right, let's go!" he checks to make sure the rest of the party are ready to follow, before making his way carefully past the garbage behind Kadaz
Shadow d20+7=19 d20+2=19 Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 9:27:06 AM

Edmund Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 3:01:12 PM
Edmund pulls his rod out of its belt loop and looks around, in the illumination from Conner's sunrod. "Disgusting!" he says to the others, "Not only are they bigots, they are filthy bigots!"
Thanks to his half-elf blood, Edmund can see into the shadowy dimness beyond the immediate glow of the sunrod, too. He squints a bit, now and again, but if he is bothered by the darkness, he gives no other sign of it. In fact, he is far too disgusted with the refuse and filth to give the darkness much thought, and much care is taken to avoid stepping in anything untoward.
"I hope this is a very short walk," Edmund grumbles.
Kirsten Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 9:42:07 PM
Kirsten pulls out her warhammer as she moves to walk along behind Edmund, trusting his eyes much more than she trusts her own. She seems somewhat uneasy within the darkness, sticking unusually close to the wizard.
The paladin remains relatively silent, only murmuring quietly to Edmund, "Let me know if you see anything... interesting... in this mess."
Mira Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 10:46:38 PM
Unable to see much of anything, Mira positions herself as close to Conner and his sunrod as possible. "What do you see?" she asks in a whisper that only those close to her can hear.
Into the Stink (DM JohnP) d20+7=9 d20+8=10 Wednesday May 23rd, 2007 10:54:35 PM
Kadaz wraps his arms around Birdie, grateful that Thar has brought the loyal dog down to him. Then the dwarf moves off into the darkness. Arm carefully follows behind, picking his way around the puddles.
Behind him, Conner strikes off a sunrod and the resulting light throws shadows dancing around the bottom of the sinkhole. The pile of garbage looms beside them, about 10 feet high and spreading out towards the limits of the sinkhole. In the first blaze of light, Arm and Shadow spot movement in the garbage, what looks like large rats and a snake diving into the refuse. Mira is moving quickly to catch up with Conner, wondering what can be seen ahead.
Finally, with a lot of careful stepping, Edmund and Kirsten catch up to the others outside the entrance to the tunnel. Thar quietly follows along, too, keeping watch behind.
The seepage from the garbage pile and the runoff from the broken sewer pipe accumulate here before trickling down into the tunnel. The odour is overpowering, although Birdie seems to like it. The tunnel descends slowly before turning so that no one can see very far ahead. Obviously, there has to be some planning before the party descends into the stinking tunnel.
OOC - Can anyone sub for Thar?
Edmund Thursday May 24th, 2007 12:20:23 AM
As Edmund catches up to the rest of the order, the increasing stench from the offal turns his stomach. He gags, his free hand moving to cover his mouth.

After peering intently into the tunnel, he says to the rest, "I think it'd be best if I head down to the bend first. Arm, you follow behind, but stay halfway up the tunnel to signal the rest when I give the 'all clear'. Gripping his axe, he then picks his way carefully down the slope to the bend.
Arm d20+4=18 d20+11=13 Thursday May 24th, 2007 5:58:47 AM

Into the Tunnel (DM JohnP) Thursday May 24th, 2007 10:50:50 PM
Near the back of the group, Edmund is quietly complaining about the smell coming from the sluggish trickle of liquid flowing down the centre of the tunnel. The harsh light from the sunrod reflects back from the liquid, showing the glistening black surface. The light from the sunrod also throws the smoothed features of the tunnel into sharp relief.
Somewhat ahead of the group, Kadaz moves up to the bend and looks around. When he sees simply more tunnel, Kadaz waves Shadow ahead to check for any unpleasant surprises. Arm is also close by, looking into the shadows cast by the sunrod held by Conner.
Somewhere further back, Mira and Kirsten move along behind the scouts. And Thar stays towards the rear, keeping an eye out for anything following the party. The ranger sees nothing. Looking down, though, he sees enough tracks from the party that he figures he would be able to track Davern Barber if he needed to.
This is how the exploration continues for some time - Kadaz and Shadow near the front, the rest clustered near Conner and the sunrod and then Thar playing rearguard. Once or twice, the tunnel branches but Thar is able to pick out the correct path. At times, Kadaz notices sections of the tunnel that look to have been widened to allow passage of human-sized creatures. He also notices that the tunnel has been sloping gently downwards for some time, although anyone could tell that from the trickle of black liquid that flows in the centre of the tunnel.

Edmund stumbles along near the rear, one hand holding the rod, the other over his nose and mouth. Thankfully, this arrangement keeps him mostly silent, except for the occasional grunt or groan of disgust at the black slop down near his feet.
The the Dark (DM JohnP) Saturday May 26th, 2007 11:24:25 PM
The odour has been improving as the partyt travels deeper into limestone that lies beneath Plateau City. Possibly the small trickles of water that join and dilute the black flow of seepage from the garbage heap are doing it. Or maybe it is just that everyone's sense of smell is being worn out. Either way, no one but Edmund is complaining of the smell any longer.
Kadaz doesn't see anything of interest ahead of them in the tunnel. However, after some time walking the dwarf's darkvision picks out a point where the tunnel either widens dramatically or it opens into a large chamber. At the same time, Arm hears some echoing movement up ahead. The pair hold up their hands to halt the party some 60 feet or more back from the point where Kadaz thinks the tunnel opens into a chamber.
When the two whisper this news back, everyone from Shadow through to Thar stops. Some move ahead, but Conner stays back to keep the light source as far back as possible. Kirsten and Edmund stay close to the light.
Arm had suggested marking their path but the tunnel hasn't been too complicated so far. Thar quietly says that he would have no problem leading the party out, and Kadaz agrees.
The party now needs to decide how to proceed. Do they march ahead? Or do they send one or more scouts who can function without light ahead? Do they take any other precautions?
Thar ail Baerer Sunday May 27th, 2007 9:52:19 AM
Nodding to kadaz, despite all of the sludge and slime around them, Thar moves silently up to the front of the group and whispers to Shadow and the others near the front "Well, maybe Shadow and I should move on ahead and see what we're facing? I'd recommend everyone prepare themselves for battle, as I don't know what we're facing. Also, the light will televise our presence to whomever is in the up ahead passage, so I'd recommend Kirsten and Ed staying back for now. What do you you all think?"

"I'm of little use to you as blind as a bat, so I'll hang back with the sunrod, and when you need me, yell and I'll throw it forward and come at the run!"

Arm Monday May 28th, 2007 6:41:03 AM
Ready to follow as well, Arm says to Mira, "Coming, love?". He then gives her a quick hug and kiss and says, "For luck," as they ready themselves.
OOC: The 'for luck' reference is in homage to the original Star War's 30th anniversary...did anyone make the connection? :)

The paladin stays back near Conner and Edmund, as per instructed.
"No doubt I will be little use as a scout," she whispers. "Best wait and see what happens."
Kirsten readies her mace and waits anxiously.
Edmund Monday May 28th, 2007 8:31:03 PM
"Only too happy to be the rear-guard," Edmund says behind his hand. "Just be quick about it. Maybe it stinks less here, but it still stinks."
Edmund shakes his rod to add force to his words.
Turning back to Conner and Kirsten, Edmund grins wrly, though because of his hand this can only be seen from his eyes.
"Don't worry, you two. I'll protect you."
The Dark Cavern (DM JohnP) Monday May 28th, 2007 10:51:21 PM
Now that something definite is ahead, Thar moves past his companions towards Shadow and Kadaz at the front. The ranger/cleric has a hushed conference with the other scouts and decides to move ahead.
Before he does, though, Conner moves to limit the light cast forward by the sunrod. As the tunnel ahead is cast into near darkness, he limits his companions' ability to see. Still, there's enough light for Thar, Shadow and Arm to scout up towards the entrance to the cavern. Kadaz, of course, is a dwarf and has no need of light sources.
Meanwhile, Mira casts a protective magic while Kirsten and Edmund move closer to Conner and his light.
The four scouts (and Birdie, too) move ahead through the very dim tunnel. Nothing unusual is encountered in the tunnel. The four who remain behind watch their companions advance to the entrance of the cavern.
Beyond the dim illumination cast by the cloaked sunrod held by Conner, the cavern is simply shadows and blackness to the scouts. Except for Kadaz, of course. The immediate focus is a dim, glowing light source across the cavern. The light flickers on the rock walls of another tunnel entering (or leaving) the dark cavern. It looks to be at least 150 feet to the tunnel, although none of them can tell how far to either side the cavern spreads.
Then, their attention is caught by movement in front of the light! A person is moving through the cavern towards the light on the opposite side. The four cannot tell too much because the figure moves around some pillars or other obstructions on the floor of the cavern.
Kadaz only - Highlight to display spoiler: {Your darkvision provides more information about the cavern ahead. The floor, roof and walls are limestone, worn by long slow movement of water. You've heard about some of the cave systems that lie under the plateau's and figure that this is one of them. The passage of time has also created stalagmites on the floor of the cavern, blocking good view of the far side. You can also see the roof, probably 20 feet overhead, and that stalactites hang from it too.}
Spot, Move Silent, and all those sneaky-hidey type skills from the scouts, please

The four scouts begin to pick their way towards the distant light across the cavern. However, Kadaz is only a short distance inside the cavern when the others realize that they aren't alone ...
Somewhere close by, two pieces of metal knock together - perhaps a weapon hilt hitting armor. Arm looks around wildly until he spots a shape up near the ceiling, partly covered by shadows. And both Thar and Shadow are convinced that they saw a shadow moving between them and the distant light.
While all of this is occurring, the others are 60 feet back in the tunnel. Conner is still holding the sunrod, trying to block any light from entering the cavern. Kirsten peers about in the darkness while Edmund grouses about the smell.

Thar moves into a corner, also trying to spot what opponents might be close by. Even his elven vision cannot pierce the dark gloom of the cavern.
Shadow does the same, trying to hide and spot what might be threatening them.

Edmund prepares to rush forward along with Conner, brandishing his rod as he goes. Suddenly, seeing the enemy between him and the cavern, he stops short (at AT-20?), giving a shout, "There's one blocking the cavern!"
Realising that a fireball from the Rod might hit the other members of the Order, Edmund readies Daze Monster against the half-orc figure, hoping against hope that the figure is not too strong to overpower his spell. The words spoken, the requisite gestures made, the spell is cast.

Arm draws his rapier and steps forward, stabbing at the half-orc blocking the tunnel. His sword strikes home, drawing first blood from the opponent. Unfortunately, his opponent seems to regard the wound as "merely a scratch".
Kadaz is about to charge ahead, but suddenly thinks better of it. He steps behind a stalagmite and activates a Tattoo, instead.
Shadow steps towards the half-orc, jabbing at him with a sword. The blow just barely hits the half-orc, drawing blood.
Thar casts a protective magic on himself, calling out for light.
In answer, Conner runs ahead and tosses the sunrod into the cavern. DM Note -- Moved Conner 25 feet, positioned the sunrod so it would illuminate the combat area.
Edmund follows right behind Conner, casting a spell to daze the half-orc blocking the mouth of the tunnel. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be affected.
Mira and Kirsten remain in the tunnel, staying close behind Conner and Edmund while waiting to see what happens in the cavern.

The first two attackers take the time to sheathe their bows, then push away from the cavern roof. Each draws a rapier as they slowly fall to the floor, moving to separate Kadaz from his companions. Since they are close to the sunrod, everyone inside the cavern can see that they are both elves.
The half-orc draws a bastard sword from his back and makes a two-handed swing at Arm. The heavy sword hits home, nearly driving the bard to his knees. Attack -- hits AC 28, 18 damage to Arm
The elf still clinging to the cavern roof is surrounded several shifting images so that no one can tell the correct target. All of the images lift a light crossbow and fire at Kadaz but the one bolt glances off the dwarf's armor. Then this elf begins to reload the crossbow.

Watching with dismay as another spell, one of his strongest, is repulsed, Edmund looks about with consternation. Everyone is too close together to risk using the Rod, his weapons would have little effect on the foes they face, and his spells seem of little avail.
Unsure of what else to do, Edmund tries a last ditch effort to contribute to the battle, and casts Summon Monster III to that end. Appearing suddenly, without a flash or a bang, a Celestial Hippogriff is summoned to his aid (occupying 10ft square AI/AJ-17/18).
"Attack that archer!" Edmund shouts to the creature. Obediently, it sets upon the foe (Elf Archer 2) with its claws and its beak, to some nominal effect. (Full Attack. 2 Claws: Threat on 24 (Confirmed) and Miss on 16; Beak: Miss on 5. 10 damage. Preparing Dodge vs. Archer 2.)

Kadaz is really, really mad now. He swings first at the dire rat in front of him. dropping it! He uses the momentum of the swing to turn and continue the axe's movement towards the elf who stabbed him in the back. He reverses the axe's motion and again swings again at the elf, trying to do as much damage as possible.

'Best I see if I can help,' she thinks to herself, 'they will probably need it.' Once at her destination, the paladin swings her warhammer at the half-orc before her. (Misses AC 21) Unfortunately for her, that warhammer comes up somewhat short.
"Damn," she grumbles, coyly attempting to cover up her obvious blunder.
'Maybe that wasn't such a good idea,' she thinks. 'Should probably stick to healing next time.'
The paladin nods to herself.

The Cave Fight - Round 4 (DM JohnP) d20+16=20 d20+14=15 d20+9=17 d20+14=16 d20+9=16 2d8(4+8)+4=16 d20+4=13 d20+4=19 d20+4=20 Tuesday June 5th, 2007 10:40:29 PM Mira sends some missiles of magical force back at the elf clinging to the ceiling. She then prepares to follow Conner and Kirsten into the cavern.
Intending to support his companions, Edmund begins casting the spell to summon a hippogriff. It will arrive next turn. DM Note -- Casting time is 1 round, so appears next round and both Edmund and hippogriff get to act. You can keep these rolls, or try again. And you may want to re-position.
Arm uses the speed provided by Mira's spell to attack the half-orc twice, hitting both times.
Angered by the temerity of the dire rat, Kadaz slashes at it with his axe. He hits twice, before continuing his swing in an attempt to hit the elf. However, the elf is too nimble to be easily hit. DM Note -- Who said that this was a normal, evil summoned dire rat? First attack wasn't enough to drop it, but the second attack was. The Cleave didn't hit the elf.
Thar nimbly moves close to Arm and casts a healing spell on the bard.
Hoping to relieve some of the pressure, Kirsten pushes her way forward. The half-orc takes the opportunity to swing but misses the paladin. Kirsten's warhammer just barely hits the half-orc. Attack of Opportunity -- misses AC 20
Conner then pounds the half-orc into the floor of the cavern. His first swing was enough to drop the half-orc, and the fighter could move further into the cavern. DM Note -- Conner could take a full move, basically up to row AK, if he chooses.
As the half-orc falls limp to the floor, his facial features relax and go slack. Then, more amazingly, the relaxation goes beyond the norm expected in such cases until the all trace of orc is lost. Instead, the corpse's large yellow eyes stare vacantly at the cave roof even as its limbs stretch and thin. Whatever it is, the body on the floor is clearly not that of a half-orc.
Shadow moves away from the fallen body of the thing to attack the closest elf archer. His rapier hits only once, but it was a solid hit.

The Half-Orc monstrosity is finally put paid by the valiant effort of The Mithril Order and Edmund is jubilant. Then, as the dead creature seems to change before his eyes, the expression of victory fades from Edmund's face to be replaced by a look of shock.
"Good heavens," he gasps.
But the time for reflection is short, for overhead the strange words are called out giving Edmund even more cause to wonder, as if magical corpses were not enough. "Secret?" he says to himself, "What secret?" Then, in a louder voice, Edmund shouts to the order, "They're on about a secret that they're trying to protect! Anyone know?"
Edmund shouts a reply in the same strange language. "Udos phuul naut ghil ulu ragar dossta noamuth-zhaunil!" (We are not here to discover your unknown-knowledge.) No sooner has this been done, than a flash of multicoloured lights wash over Edmund, giving him cause to blink a few times. (Will Save: 25)((Disregard second save, I rolled for the Hippogriff before realising it was unnecessary.)) "Colour Spray." Edmund says to himself, and any who might be near enough to hear him.
Suddenly, the Hippogriff blinks into existence up ahead in the cavern (occupying AM/AN-16/17). "Now, on the ceiling! Stop him!" Edmund shouts to Hippogriff. It swiftly obeys.
((I'll keep the previous rolls. I don't know how high up/far away the archer is, but I'm presuming it's more than 5feet. Therefore, just the first roll will be used, since it won't be able to make a Full Attack.))
The Hippogriff makes a valiant essay at the caster on the ceiling, striking what appears to be a fierce blow with its claws. The true extant of damage done, though, remains to be seen.
Hippogriff -- Hits AC 24 (Nat.20, Threat). 5 damage. (AC 23 will confirm for 10 total damage)
Now is the time for action. His way unblocked, Edmund rushes into the chamber past Kirsten, stopping near the Hippogriff (at AN-15). With eyes ablaze, shouting, "Take that!" he thrusts the Rod of Wonder forward towards the Dwarf and his Dire Rat. This time, there are no fireballs.
Edmund instantly vanishes.

Edmund commands the hippogriff to continue attacking, and it does. The strike from the hippogriff disrupts another image around the caster, so that only two images remain. Edmund then casts a spell at the elf mage and is elated to see the ceiling mage stop moving.
After landing a solid blow when elf archer 2 moved away, Conner continues to pursue that opponent. His blow lands solidly, removing any chance the elf had to use that potion.
d2=2
Arm fires his crossbow twice, dispelling the last of the mirror images and striking with the second. DM Note -- Arm, I have to ask -- why aren't you using the handy-dandy Icy Burst Light Crossbow from Frost Ginny?
Chasing after the other elf archer, Kadaz hits it solidly with one swing of his axe. It isn't enough, however, to drop the elf.
Thar moves towards Kadaz and heals the dwarf.
At the cavern entrance, Kirsten picks up her dropped items and moves towards the summoner.
Mira also recovers from the magical effect, and responds by casting Magic Missile back at the ceiling elf. It's not overkill, exactly, since the caster still appears relatively healthy.
Shadow switches weapons as he moves ahead.

Risking an attack from Kadaz, the elf archer reaches to grab the body of his companion. Even as he does so, everyone can see that the corpse has relaxed in death exactly as the half-orc did. As Edmund's Hold Person spell does its job, he cannot resist leaping into the air and shouting, "YES!" Finally, his magic seems to be achieving something.
The hippogriff, meanwhile, swoops in again towards the caster with its claws outstretched.
Hippogriff attacks Elf Caster 4 -- vs. AC 25 for 6 damage
Though unable to resist looking up at the caster with what might only be described as a sadistic grin, Edmund doesn't waste much time. Giving an encouraging shout of "Spot on, Arm!" he dashes off towards the Dwarf, certain that the Elf on the ceiling can now be easily handled by the Hippogriff and Arm.
Able to rush across the cavern (to AF-13) thanks to Haste, Edmund sets his sights on the rat-carrying Dwarf. "We'll just see about that," Edmund says grimly, thrusting his Rod out in front of him with force and determination.
With an immense crack, a lighting bolt bursts from the Rod and sails straight at the Dwarf Caster, and on from there until it hits the wall of the Cavern to the Southwest.
((The lightning bolt will exit the lower left corner of AF-13 and proceed diagonally SW until it strikes the wall. Damage 27, Reflex save DC 15 for half. Bolt is 70ft. long and 5ft wide.))
Edmund is shocked. ((Couldn't resist.))

Kadaz starts to follow the summoner but the sudden appearance of a pack of rats, out of nowhere makes him pause. Even though the rats don't swarm him just the sight of so many squirming little bodies is revolting. But the dwarf manages to keep his breakfast down and continue on. (fort save 26).
Kadaz pushes through them, however, chasing the summoner. A lightning bolt out of nowhere passes in front of him, making the beard on his face stand up and sending little sparks harmlessly skittering off his shield. Must be Ed, Kadaz thinks.

The elf archer managed to twist away from Kadaz' attack when he stooped to pick up the body of his fellow and then moved away.
Edmund moves further into the room and triggers his rod once more. This time a bolt of electricity shoots across the cavern, striking the dwarf summoner. As Edmund does this, the hippogriff attacks the held elf mage on the ceiling again.
Keeping after the elf archer, Conner hits him once with his sword. The blow is hard, but not enough to drop the elf.
Kadaz withstands the distraction of the rats and goes after the dwarf opponent, hitting him hard.
Arm takes aim at the motionless elf mage on the ceiling and hits him twice.
Not bothered by the rats, Thar charges after the elf archer and hits him with one shortsword. That is enough to drop the elf.
Shadow takes careful aim and sends two arrows into the elf mage on the ceiling. The second shot strikes a vital point, ending that opponent's life. Even as the magic holding it to the ceiling fails, the corpse of the elf is shifting like those of the half-orc and the elf archer.
Kirsten moves close to the summoner and attacks but cannot hit the dwarf.

Edmund casts a Web to stop the fleeing summoner. The magical webbing stretches from floor to ceiling around the summoner. The hippogriff flies over to guard Edmund.
The stench and tiresome squeaking of the rats gets to Kadaz. The dwarf staggers away from the swarm.
Conner sheathes his sword and readies his bow, ready to shoot the next target that appears. For now, the summoner is barely visible inside the Web.
Not bothered by the rat swarm, Kirsten moves up to the edge of the Web.
Arm runs closer to the summoner, stopping short of the Web. Mira is hot on his heels.
Shadow fires two arrows at the summoner stuck in the Web. The first arrow misses all the webbing and hits the summoner, but the second misses and is caught in the webbing.

OOC - Information about Web -- Hey! Have I mentioned how annoying this spell is? Here's how I've decided to work with the spell: - any characters with at least 5 feet of webbing between them have Cover vs. one another. That, among other things, means +4 AC and a +2 bonus to Reflex saves. If the summoner had a snowball's chance, he could hide because he has Cover. - 20 feet of webbing equals Total Cover. In other words, no attacks are possible. - the first 5 foot step into an area with webbing is a Move action. The reverse is true, too, so stepping out into the clear is a Move action. - Moving further into the webbing requires a Full round action and a DC 10 Strength or Escape Artist check. Failure means that the character gets stuck (per the spell description) and can't move. How far a character can move in the webbing depends on their result on the above check. A result of 15 means they can move 5 feet, 20 = 10 feet, etc..

After a little happy dance, Edmund shouts a tactical suggestion to his companions. He moves around the north edge of the Web, into the dark shadows in the far reaches of the cave. What would his instructors and friends, for that matter, if they saw him dashing bravely into the unknown? His hippogriff moves along behind him.
Mira moves up and targets the rats swarming over Arm with a Magic Missile spell. The missile strike the rats, searing many of them and thinning the swarm considerably.
Standing near the elf archer, Conner orders the creature to stop moving. The creature does, in fact, lie still and continues bleeding quietly.
Arm slashes at the rats and manages to kill enough to end the threat. He's now able to focus on other things.
After being healed, Kadaz moves around the Web to surround the summoner. Once he makes the final step between the stalagmite and the Web, his darkvision allows him to see something in the darkness ahead. Something bad ...
Shadow moves to the south of the Web.
Heeding Mira's caution, Kirsten gets ready to thump some new creatures.
Thar moves back a little, preparing for whatever is summoned.

The dwarf summoner completes his spell and everyone can see a fire elemental appear in the middle of the Web beside the summoner. From Edmund's location beyond the web comes the sound of a piercing yowl--Edmund is screaming.
It isn't the pain or the force so much as the sheer surprise and unexpectedness of the attack. Edmund is nearly bowled over as he is struck, but otherwise more or less unharmed. He is not, however, unfrightened. In the dire circumstance, Edmund defaults to his alternate combat plan: he takes to his heels.
"Help! Help! Help! Help! Help!" he shouts as he flees the roper, running back the way he came. "There's a rock, and it has tentacles! It tried to grab me! Help! Help! Help!"
The Hippogriff turns and covers Edmund's retreat.

Kirsten jumps somewhat at the sound of Edmund's shrieking. She looks over to her friend as he races past, and though he seems to be relatively unharmed his cries are enough to worry her. Not to mention Kadaz's yelling about monster's with tentacles, the very thought of such a thing making her shudder.
"Time for a little help, I think," she mutters under her breath, and begins to summon her warhorse to her side. "Come on, Wolfgang, my friend."

Wanting some protection, Mira casts Invisibility on herself and moves closer to Arm.
Edmund tries to get away but is unable to break the grip of the tendril attached to his body. DM Note -- I did not explicitly mention that the tendril remains attached to Edmund. To move away from the roper, Edmund needs to make the Escape Artist or Strength checks. Of course, he can run towards the roper or perform any other action.
If you want a "re-do", put it in your next post and I'll parse it then.
Arm begins casting a summoning spell, hoping to get some creatures that will deal with what the summoner is calling. DM Note -- Monstrous spiders can move in their own webs without penalty. I'm not so sure about their ability to move through a magical Web. Again, next turn you can specify what creatures Arm summons.
Ready for another attack, Kadaz steps towards the roper.
Shadow steps ahead and fires two arrows at the summoner. The first arrow avoids all the webbing and strikes a vital place on the summoner. The second arrow goes wide.
Thar remembers what he can about elementals, but doesn't recall much beyond that they do fire damage to both those they hit and those that hit them. And, obviously, that can easily burn webbing. He fires an arrow at the summoner and has the satisfaction of seeing it strike the summoner in the back.
Kirsten calls upon her warhorse, expecting that she and her companions will need Wolfgang's assistance.
++++++
The fire elemental finishes burning a path through the webbing and then moves beside Kadaz.
The summoner manages to continue casting despite being injured by both arrows. A dire bat appears behind Conner and immediately attacks the fighter. The bat cannot get past Conner's armor, though.
The summoner immediately casts another spell and his wounds are partly cured. Then, obviously having had enough, the summoner follows the path carved by his elemental out of the Web.
The roper reels in Edmund before firing another rope at Kadaz. This time the rope hits Kadaz and the dwarf immediately counters by attacking the rope. He doesn't manage to sever it, though, and he feels the weakening effect of the strand. DM Note -- Unless Edmund takes a "re-do" that would somehow free him. Position shown is after being reeled in. Attack 1 vs. Kadaz -- hits TOUCH AC 27, Kadaz needs to make a DC 18 Fortitude (poison) save or lose 3 STR.

After some momentary confusion, the fight settles into a more typical flow.
Arm cannot see where he intends to place the spiders, so he targets them blindly. Regardless of where they appeared, the creatures followed his instructions and attacked the summoner and the roper. Unfortunately, none of them are able to hit their targets. Spider a -- misses Summoner 5, AC 11 Spider b -- misses Summoner 5, AC 21 Spider c -- misses roper, AC 13
Arm then moves forward and waits until he can see the summoner.
Shadow steps ahead and still cannot see the summoner, so he waits.
Closer to the roper, Kadaz severs the strand and then hits the fire elemental next to him. His strike is enough to send the elemental back to its home. DM Note -- Kadaz, don't forget that you Sunder with both attacks
Thar also waits until he can see a target.
Wanting to strengthen her companion, Mira moves up to Conner and uses a wand to cast Bull's Strength on the fighter.
Edmund is relieved that he was able to escape the attack of the roper. Now that it serves no purpose, the wizard dispels his Web. This allows his companions to target both the summoner and the roper. Arm was going to fire at the elemental but Kadaz has already destroyed it, so he fires at the summoner. His arrow misses the target.
Shadow fires twice at the summoner and misses both times. Thar also fires at the summoner, with the same disappointing result. DM Note -- Summoner now in melee combat, so AC effectively 27.
Kirsten swings up on her warhorse and urges Wolfgang forward a bit. DM Note -- Wolfgang is Large, so please consider that.
Boosted by Mira's spell, Conner slices and dices the dire bat.
++++++
The summoner ignores the spiders and the roper, heading for the exit from the cavern. Two of the spiders can attack but both miss. Strangely, the roper does not attack the summoner.
Instead, the summoner goes after all of the targets that suddenly appeared in front of it. The spider attacking the roper is bitten, disappears and leaves the roper hungry for adventurer.
Strands shoot out at the two other spiders, easily catching them. The first is unweakened, but the second is drained so badly that it can barely move. Roper hits spider c with bite, AC 20, 14 damage Roper hits spider a with strand, Touch AC 28, makes Fort save Roper hits spider b with strand, Touch AC 15, fails Fort save and loses 8 STR
A third strand hits Kadaz, and the dwarf has to again withstand the weakening effect. Roper hits Kadaz with strand, touch AC 30 Kadaz must make DC 18 Fort save (poison) or lose 10 STR
A strand then shoots out towards Conner, going by Kadaz but still hitting the tattooed fighter. Roper hits Conner with strand, Touch AC 15 (-4 from cover) (which I think hits) Conner must make DC 18 Fort save (poison) or lose 13 STR
Another strand shoots towards Mira but she has cover from both Conner and Kadaz, and the strand misses. Roper misses Mira with strand, Touch AC 7 (-8 from cover)
A final strand shoots towards Arm, somehow streaking past the spider and the grazing the edge of the stalagmite that Arm is sheltering near. Roper hits Arm with strand, Touch AC 23 (-8 from cover), Arm must make DC 18 Fort save (poison) or lose 7 STR

On the opposite side of the cavern, Arm also resists the weakness but cannot break free. Neither can his spiders.
Kadaz also resists the weakness and easily severs the strand attached to himself. He then moves close to the roper, discovering that it can reach him 10 feet away and allowing it to bite him. AoO -- bite hits Kadaz AC 30, Kadaz -- take 10 points damage
Moving a bit closer, Shadow manages to hit and drop the fleeing summoner.
Thar also moves a bit closer and hits the roper with an arrow.
Wanting a clear path for a charge, Kirsten directs Wolfgang around to the north side of the cavern.
Back near where the sunrod sputters, Edmund shakes his rod and shoots a fireball towards the roper. The flame washes over the roper and narrowly misses Kadaz. The roper roars with pain and the odour of burned flesh fills the cavern. And the summoner is definitely toast.
Mira watches, shaking her head at the newfound competence of Edmund.

Squinting as the Roper retreats further into the cave, Edmund wrinkles his nose at the smell of Roast Roper. "Eww. Filthy."
Then, setting off after it, Edmund skirts a cave feature. Once he is directly east of the Roper with a nice clear shot at it, he thrusts the Rod forward again, intent on fireballing the thing into the grave. "Take that!" he shouts.
It only takes a moment. Edmund starts screaming almost as soon as he has used the Rod. "Help! Help!" he shrieks, "Help! They're in my eyes! I can't see! Help! Butterflies! Butterflies everywhere! In my mouth, in my eyes, Help me!!!"
It's hard to tell what Edmund is carrying on about, because the rod didn't appear to do anything. He doesn't seem to notice this, though. Rather, he staggers around, one hand clutched over his face, the other swatting at the empty air in front of him.
"Look out! Look out! They're everywhere!" he continues to shout. "I can't see! I can't see! For God's sake, someone help!"

As Kadaz moves closer to the roper it lunges at him and bites. Kadaz wasn't ready and when the roper does this again Kadaz's axe is ready. This time the axe hits the creature. (hit AC 33, damage 10)
Somehow, however, the axe directs the roper's teeth towards a vital and sensitive potion of the dwarf's anatomy. The roper takes hold, shakes its mouth back and forth, and rips a chunk of meat out of Kadaz's body.
"OOOOWWWW!" the dwarf screams.
Kadaz is more hurt than he has ever been before. Time to show a little discretion, he thinks. But then he sees Arm being drawn towards the creature. And Arm cannot withstand the kind of attack Kadaz just took. Kadaz moves sidewise to stand by Arm and swings at the tentacle holding him. (move to Q10, hit AC 31, damage 8, burn hero point, damage still 8, bummer.)
"It won't get you, I promise" says Kadaz to Arm. as he readies another attack against the tentacle.

Perhaps it is because of his friend's help, but this time Arm is able to break free of the roper's grasp (strenth check-21, nat. 20). He immediately moves backwards several steps to U8 so that it does not attack him again. However cowardly he feels by doing this, he feels it is for the best at this time, and it also gives him time to contemplate how to attack it at a distance.

Something surely happened but nobody can tell exactly what. All they know is that Edmund suddenly starts screaming about insects that no one else can see.
After hacking into the retreating roper, Kadaz moves up to try to free Arm. He manages to hit the strand but cannot completely sever the thing. However, the strand was weakened and Arm could pull himself free. The bard retreats behind a stalagmite.
Conner to put himself between Kadaz and the roper, allowing the monster to attack him as he moves. The fighter swings his sword at the roper but cannot get past its armor. AoO -- bite hits Conner, AC 30, 12 points damage
Hoping to put an end to this threat, Shadow also moves forward and puts an arrow into a weak point of the roper.
Thar does the same, although he doesn't hit nearly so hard.
Seeing the danger to her companions, Mira casts a Fireball spell after seeing how effective Edmund's rod was. The fire explodes behind the roper, not affecting Conner.
Kirsten sees the injuries on Kadaz so she maneuvers Wolfgang around to close with the dwarf. Then she leans down from her saddle to heal Kadaz.
++++++
Suddenly, the roper shrinks and shrivels until another of the strange creatures like the corpses of the half-orc is standing in the same place, ten feet away from Conner. The strands disappear as the thing shifts into this new form, although everyone has the satisfaction of seeing how badly wounded it is. The creature turns and runs into the exit from the cavern. It goes beyond where Kadaz can see but then a flare of magic occurs and the roof of the exits slumps downward as if it suddenly turned to soft mud.
COMBAT OVER
Edmund Tuesday June 19th, 2007 4:17:44 AM
Edmund continues to jump up and down near the pillar in the middle of the gallery. He swats at the air with his rod in one hand whilst the other covers his eyes, making it impossible for him to see anything anyway.
"I'm blind! I'm blind! Butterflies everywhere!" he howls miserably. "Help me! Help me!"
There are not--and have not been--any butterflies, a fact which Edmund still doesn't seem to grasp, and which he might not grasp as long as his eyes remain shut and covered.
In the meantime, he continues to moan pitiously. "Get them off! Someone help!"
Arm Tuesday June 19th, 2007 5:54:39 AM
Disgruntled that once again one of their quarry escapes, Arm approaches Kadaz to make sure he's ok. Once he's assured of that, he says to him, "Take a look at that wall over there, my friend. Any chance we can get through it?".
Kadaz (AC 24, HP 24/75, Bull Strength 18/30, bless) Tuesday June 19th, 2007 7:03:57 AM
Kadaz has turned to face the creature and keep it off Arm but is very, very relieved when it collapses and runs away instead of attacking him.
"Kirsten, thank you very much. You're a life saver" he replies as the paladin touches him for a bit of curing.
A sudden thought hits Kadaz. "Birdie, come her boy!" Kadaz yells. Birdie finally comes out from behind his pillar and limps to Kadaz. The rat bites on his side are still oozing blood. "Poor dog, what have they done to you?" Kadaz asks as he picks up the dog.
"Kirsten, can you help Birdie?" Kadaz asks the paladin.
Birdie (AC 16, hp 2/7, diseased)
Once the dog's problems are addressed Kadaz will go over to examine the closed tunnel, trying to figure out if it can be reopened.

"It could be that one of them was Barber, but it is more likely they were guarding where ever he was headed." Shadow states as he starts trying to retrieve his shafts, and he will search the bodies as he does so.

Recovery (DM JohnP) Tuesday June 19th, 2007 10:14:58 PM
The combat has come to an unsatisfying conclusion with the escape of the final opponent. After checking on Kadaz, Arm had suggested examining the mud blocking the entrance.
Kadaz' first thanks Kirsten for the healing and then rushes to check Birdie. The dog is quivering, covered in blood from the ratbites on all parts of his body. Soon enough, both Thar and Kirsten are there to heal Birdie and remove any threat of infection. Birdie licks the faces of those healing him, nearly dancing with happiness. Then the dog mvoes towards one of the fallen opponents, growling and bristling as if he were afraid but trying to act bravely.
While this has been going on, Conner walks over to the dark end of the cavern to examine the mud. He and Arm are still there, looking at the mud, and can see it solidify and merge almost seamlessly with the surrounding stone. Mira rushes over to check Arm and confirm that he is still in one piece.
While this is going on, Shadow has been gathering up arrows and checking the bodies of their fallen opponents. None of the creatures are still living and all look the same. Once he lays them out on the cavern floor, the similarities are even more evident. Given time to study the creatures, Thar is pretty certain that they are something called doppelgangers.
Finally, someone thinks to go over and explain to Edmund that "the butterflies have all left". It's only then that the wizard will open his eyes and peer around the cavern.
Shadow gathers all of the items from the attackers into a pile. He hasn't had time for more investigation to determine quality or material.
Kadaz (AC 24, HP 24/75) d10+6=13 Wednesday June 20th, 2007 7:10:28 AM
Kadaz picks up Birdie and hugs him tight. "We got through that one, didn't we boy" he whispers, his voice cracking. After a bit, he pulls a flask of water and drinks from it, gives some to Birdie, then washes some blood off his hands. Then he checks himself again, carefully feeling those areas that had been damaged by the doppleganger's bite.
After composing himself, Kadaz moves to examine the filled tunnel. "Let me try something" he says to the others. He puts down his shield and grabs his axe with two hands. He swings at the new rocks, trying to see if his axe can dig a hole. If this works maybe he can follow the one who fled. (Damage 13 with adamantine axe)
Arm (AC 18 HP 24/27) Wednesday June 20th, 2007 7:46:33 AM
Arm hugs Mira tightly as well as he consoles her, "I'm fine my love...just a scratch or two. It seems that Kadaz is in much worse shape than I.". Speaking louder so that the rest can hear, he continues, "As much as I'd like to end this once and for all, I think we need to regroup. Let's pick up what we've found and head back to the apartment." He then grabs what he can as well as his crossbow bolts, then prepares to leave. Before he does so however, he moves to Ed and says, "I know we've had our differences in the past, but I just wanted to say you made a fine showing today...well done.".
Shadow Wednesday June 20th, 2007 9:53:01 AM
"Is there no chance to follow?" Shadow asks those that have much more expertise with stone.
If the answer is not at this time he will help gather the those things scavenged. He is not sure about leaving the bodies here, but does not want to suggest carrying them either.

Kirsten Wednesday June 20th, 2007 12:55:24 PM
She falls silent as things finally start to settle down after the battle, her eyes narrowing as she peers at the bodies left behind. Kirsten nods subtly in agreement as Arm speaks to the group, and then she offers her assistance in gathering up the items they had found.
Edmund Wednesday June 20th, 2007 1:37:17 PM
Opening his eyes cautiously, Edmund peers out between his fingers. Then, lowering his hand, he looks about swiftly, turning from side to side.
"Where'd they go? Where'd they go!? Lemme at 'em! I'll show those blighters!"
Once Edmund calms down, he slips his rod back onto his belt and heads over to the others, noting the injuries sustained by Kadaz, Arm, and Conner. "Good heavens, looks like we only just had a narrow miss," he says. "What sort of arcane play is at work here? Shapeshifting corpses and walking rocks--surely that incompentent buffoon Barber can't be involved with these fiends. They are far too... professional."
When Arm suggests returning to the apartment, Edmund is quick to agree. "Absolutely, yes, definitely, we should do that, right away, in fact."
On speaking with Arm, Edmund manages a smile. "Oh? Yes, I suppose I did, maybe! Hardly noticed. Really, the rod more than me. Thankfully we had your sword, Kadaz's axe, and Conner's strength! All went very well, I think. Until the butterflies showed up. I wonder where they went! "
Edmund looks around suspiciously as if he thinks that the aforementioned butterflies might return at any moment.
"I hate bugs," Edmund adds. "Let's go put the kettle on."
Conner (HP 32/74) Wednesday June 20th, 2007 9:45:51 PM
The fighter examines the wall but has no experience with this kind of thing. "Can any of you identify the magic used here?" he calls out, "and can anyone help staunch this infernal bleeding?" Conner holds out his arm to expose his wounds for any of the healers to examine.
[OOC Sorry for the missed post, was away for work.]
Waiting Around (DM JohnP) Wednesday June 20th, 2007 11:06:07 PM
Everyone seems to be occupied with two things. Or maybe three.
Kadaz and Shadow wander over to the new stone blocking the exit from the cavern. Kadaz swings at it with his axe and has the satisfaction of chipping nearly an inch thick piece from it. He could, if he wanted, dig through the blockage but it would take time since he estimated that several feet of tunnel were collapsed by the fleeing creature. Shadow feels much the same way.
Arm and Mira check one another for wounds. At least, that's what it looks like. While this is going one, Thar heals Kadaz and Arm. And Conner asks for healing, too.
After checking Mira, Arm prepares to leave by gathering the items from the dead doppelgangers. Kirsten helps with this while Edmund prepares to leave, too.
After a couple minutes, the items are bundled for hauling back up the tunnel. However, Kadaz and Shadow are still looking at the new stone. If they choose to continue digging, there will be lots of time to rest and investigate. Otherwise, everyone will need to get moving back up the tunnel so that Edmund can get a cup of tea.
Arm Thursday June 21st, 2007 7:11:37 AM
Arm moves to Kadaz and says, "If you think we can get through this shortly, then perhaps we should stay and try to finish this. Otherwise I think it best if we head back for now.". To the rest, he says, "If we DO go on, does anyone have an invisibility spell we can cast on the loot until such time that we can retrieve it?".
Kadaz (AC 24, HP 46/75) Thursday June 21st, 2007 7:46:02 AM
This time Kadaz thanks Thar for the healing. He is feeling much, much better now.
Looking at the tunnel Kadaz makes his decision. "I can dig through this but it will take hours and make lots of noise. They'll be ready for us on the other side. I suggest we leave and return with a spell that will create a tunnel."
"And as for the items, I can carry a lot if it's tied together. I think we'll be able to take everything."
With that Kadaz look around carefully to make sure nothing has been missed. Then gets ready to leave with the rest of the party.
Thar ail Baerer Thursday June 21st, 2007 10:10:58 AM
Thar nods in agreement with Kadaz's suggestion. "Yes, let's get out of here and find some scroll or spell that can create some sort of way through the tunnel. I'll also hlp carry any loot that is needed."
He moves over to Arm and casts the rest of his 0 Level spells, to at least stop the bleeing.
(Casts 4 of the 0 Level Cure Minor Wounds, each healing 1 point of dmg for a total of 4 pts, as well as stopping the bleeding.)
Shadow Thursday June 21st, 2007 12:22:31 PM
"Unfortunately, I don't think it would be a good idea to continue on," Shadow says as he turns to Kadaz to see what he has to say.
It looks like they will be heading back so he helps gather up the stuff that the group has collected, and will start the journey back. "We should inform the guard of what we found here."
Kirsten Thursday June 21st, 2007 8:55:10 PM
Kirsten nods at Shadow's suggestion of going to the guard, "Yes, it's best to let them know what is going on here."
She then helps the others gather what is left and starts back with them.
Edmund Thursday June 21st, 2007 9:49:32 PM
Not having an invisibility spell available, Edmund just shrugs. When mention of guards comes up, Edmund cheers noticeably.
"Forgot about that!," he says, "Would be the right thing to do, what? Better to let them know, before they think we're taking the law into our own hands!"
Packing Up (DM JohnP) Thursday June 21st, 2007 11:17:44 PM
Everyone seems to agree that departing is the best course. So Arm, Shadow and Kirsten help bundle things up and stuff them into Kadaz's pack. It's only the armor, really, that takes up much space and the dwarf is surprisingly skilled at packing such things.
Thar expends the last of his spells healing Arm before joining in the preparations to depart.
Edmund is more than ready to depart, since there's a teapot waiting for him. He agrees with the notion of informing the guard about what occurred.
Mira and Conner are silent during this, so it's impossible to tell what their intentions are.
The only impediment to packing is Birdie. For some reason, the dog doesn't want to stray too far from Kadaz's legs. And Birdie is alternately growling or whining every time Kadaz approaches one of the bodies. Finally, though, the party departs the cavern and Birdie relaxes.
The trip back up the tunnels is routine, even if it is more tiring because of the uphill climb. Thar is able to follow the turnings of the path until, finally, everyone feels moving air on their faces. It's only a minute or so longer before the leader of the party reaches the sinkhole. Strangely, no one notices the odour of rotting garbage, not even Edmund. That doesn't bode well for what they smell like themselves.
The garbage heap looks unchanged. There are still the sounds of movement inside it, though.
Do people chose to go around, or take the short cut over the pile.

In the Garbage Pit (DM JohnP) Sunday June 24th, 2007 10:30:38 AM
It's obvious to nearly everyone that the smell of fresh blood has drawn scavengers from the garbage heap. From the sounds of things, there are several dire rats and probably some normal rats, too. And something bigger, further back in the pile. The dimming light from the sunrod doesn't reveal much because the big creature, whatever it is, is trying to stay out of sight beneath the garbage heap.
Unless someone does something to scare off these scavengers, the party will be attacked very soon.
Thar ail Baerer Sunday June 24th, 2007 11:14:24 AM
"Uh guys, we better get the heck out of here, unless we want another fight. What if we hit it with some bright light or fire? That may help? I've got some oil and could throw it onto the pile and we could light it. But that may not do a lot more than scare it"
While saying this, he backs away and draws his twin short swords and readies himself for whatever may come up.
(OOC = John, how many rounds has it been since the end of the last battle? I had 28 rounds left on my PfE and am trying to see if it is still applicable.)
Kadaz (AC 24, HP 46/75) bull's strength 30/30 Sunday June 24th, 2007 4:43:32 PM
"Hey Edmund, can you fireball that pile of trash? I'd prefer not to fight rats again." But just in case, Kadaz activates his tattoo of strength for the 2nd (and last) time today.
Edmund Sunday June 24th, 2007 6:22:24 PM
Edmund glances at the pile of trash, looking it over.
"I think so," he says to Kadaz, "But we should probably get out of the way. It's not exactly safe to do it at close range."
Edmund looks to the others, giving them a chance to make a decision about what they want him to do.
Arm Monday June 25th, 2007 6:00:53 AM
Arm thinks for a moment, then says, "Hold on..let me try something.". He then begins to cast a spell that may help them out...then again... (Casting ghost sound-volume level and type: dire tiger, point of origin: fixed and behind whatever is hiding there so that it is in direct line with the tunnel they just exited so it can escape.)

Shadow Monday June 25th, 2007 8:29:47 AM
Shadow will get his bow out and nock and arrow, just in case whatever is in the garbage decides that the group should be its next meal or something.

The sorcerer chases after Conner, anxious to avoid whatever is taking cover in the pile. Once she is sure everyone is out of range (20 ft radius) she prepares her magic. Mira holds the tiny ball of bat poo and sulfur tightly as she waits and watches for Edmund to demonstrate his mastery of magic first.
Only if needed will she point her finger at the pile, and in the direction of the hulking creature, speak the words, and release the energy. (Held Action - Fireball for 17 pts. dmg. Reflex vs 18 for half dmg.)

Please! Excuse Me! (DM JohnP) Monday June 25th, 2007 11:22:42 PM
As soon as they realize that they are being stalked, the party springs into action. Well, actually, it's Kadaz's suggestion that Edmund fireball the trash pile that gets everyone moving.
Before that, Thar prepared to fight by drawing his swords. Shadow is another who prepares to fight.
At Kadaz's urging, Edmund prepared to use his rod again. That caused Conner, Mira and Kirsten to move well away.
But it is Arm's spell that caused the greatest effect. As soon as the sound of a hungry, roaring tiger sounds in the sinkhole, the rats scurry deep into the pile of garbage. A flurry of trash is thrown into the air as the larger creature tries to burrow as deep as possible into the trash pile.
"Take it away! Take it away!, cries a voice from the centre of the trash pile.
Edmund Monday June 25th, 2007 11:29:03 PM
Edmund raises his rod and prepares to blast the garbage pile into a new world of Boom, when suddenly shouts come from within the pile.
Edmund lowers the rod quickly and looks to the others, "Good heavens!" he exclaims. "I think there might be someone in there!"
Kadaz (AC 24, HP 46/75) bull's strength 29/30 Tuesday June 26th, 2007 5:48:21 AM
"Hello the trash pile" Kadaz yells out. "Do you need help?" Just in case he readies his shield and axe. But who, or what, could be in there?
Arm d20=16 Tuesday June 26th, 2007 5:55:05 AM
After making sure that Mira and Ed are ready if need be, Arm quickly dispels his magic and calls out, "You'd best stand and deliver yourself to us, or you'll suffer a fate more painful than that of my tiger. Right now, you have not one but two fireballs ready to incinerate you. Show yourself and make no sudden moves, and you MAY not be harmed." (intimidate=16) As he does so, he makes a great show of drawing his sword as to make as much noise as possible to add to his command.
Shadow d20+14=28 Tuesday June 26th, 2007 8:10:55 AM
Not sure of what is in the trash pile, Shadow will try and blend into the shadows of the pit and see what it is. If need be maybe even get a surprise attack in.

Thar ail Baerer Tuesday June 26th, 2007 1:48:42 PM
"What the .... ?" Thar thinks to himself in confusion, as he hears his companions explain that a person or humanoid is inside the pile.
He maintains his position and awaits the unknown creature's reaction.
Kirsten Tuesday June 26th, 2007 2:34:49 PM
The paladin looks surprised upon hearing a voice from within the pile of trash.
"What in the world could stand to be inside there," she murmurs to herself.
Mira Tuesday June 26th, 2007 9:34:59 PM
Mira holds her spell, keeping an eye on the pile of rubbish.
Conner Tuesday June 26th, 2007 9:55:23 PM
The fighter keeps one hand on the pommel of his sword, for no matter how afraid the voice sounds, how harmless can a creature actually be that spends it's time buried in a pile of garbage.
From the Depths of the Trash Pile (DM JohnP) Tuesday June 26th, 2007 10:39:02 PM
The voice from the trash pile puzzles some, but others are ready for action. It's Arm's threat that creates the most response, though.
"I was ... ah ... coming to see if you needed help with the rats."
"Nothing more. Never think of doing anything more. Never. Not me."
"I'm just going to stay here and you can ... ahh ... find your way out. Right?"
It's difficult to tell much about the speaker since they seem to be buried in the trash pile. However, the sharpeyed notice what seems like a tentacle protruding above the surface of the trash.
Arm d20+4=15 Wednesday June 27th, 2007 5:58:49 AM
Spotting the tentacle, (spot=15) Arm calls out again, "If you don't show yourself, you WILL be staying in there, as that will be your last resting place. You have until the count of three to show yourself and be recognized...Mira, Ed...be ready to fire...1....2....".
Edmund Wednesday June 27th, 2007 6:59:46 AM
Raising the rod again, Edmund nods at Arm's words, and responds with a loud enough voice that the Trashmaster can hear him. "Aye aye! Fireballs at the ready!"
Thar ail Baerer Wednesday June 27th, 2007 9:38:13 AM
Deciding to add to the deception, Thar says loudly "I've also got a chain lightning spell I've been itching to try out. This thing will be good practice for me!"
He stands ready for whatever comes next.
Kirsten Wednesday June 27th, 2007 1:11:06 PM
Still seems rather bewildered that someone would be hiding within a steaming mass of garbage. Kirsten shakes her head, ready for whatever might crawl out of the trash.
Kadaz (AC 24, HP 46/75) bull's strength 29/30 Wednesday June 27th, 2007 5:29:33 PM
Kadaz doesn't feel very threatened by the voice coming from the trash. He leans close to Kirsten and whispers "Sounds kinda like Edmund. Does he have any brothers?"
Mira d20+2=11 Wednesday June 27th, 2007 7:31:56 PM
Mira takes a step closer to the pile, peering in the dim light to see what she can see. (Spot=11)
"Ready when you are, Ed! Say the word, Arm!" the sorcerer responds to her companions.
Lament for the Trashmaster (DM JohnP) Wednesday June 27th, 2007 11:22:48 PM
Arm continues to threaten whoever, or whatever, is inside the trash heap. His companions move to support the bard's words, either by preparing to cast spells or otherwise preparing for violence.
"Please! Don't burn Otto! Otto nice! Don't hurt nice Otto, and Otto not hurt you! Don't burn Otto's nice trash!"
The tentacle or eyestalk, or whatever it is, bobs up and down several times and seems to study the group intently.
"Otto come out now. Otto show self. No hurt Otto."
The trash heap shifts and slides until the imposing bulk of a large creature appears above the surface. Some people might recognize the thing, but most may not. Knowledge Dungeoneering DC 16 - Highlight to display spoiler: {Otto is an Otyugh}
"Otto go back sleep now. Nice people go home. All right?"
Arm d20=1 Thursday June 28th, 2007 5:17:32 AM
Having no bleeping clue what the thing in the trash pile is (dungeoneering=1...doh!), Arm visibly swallows and collects his thoughts. Once he feels his voice is steady enough, he calls out, "Very well, since you have obeyed us, we will honor your request.". To the rest, he says, "Mira, stay with me. The rest of you climb up, and Mira...you follow them in case our new 'friend' decides to change his mind.".
Kadaz (AC 24, HP 46/75) bull's strength 27/30 Thursday June 28th, 2007 7:01:04 AM
Kadaz jumps back a bit when he sees the creature emerge from the trash. But it seems nonthreatening.
"Otto, we're leaving. Sorry for disturbing you. But before we go, could you maybe tell us about who else uses this tunnel here? And in exchange for bothering you can we get you some food you like?
Shadow d20=12 Thursday June 28th, 2007 8:06:27 AM
Shadow is taken aback by the creature and really has no clue what it is. He is not 100% sure the group can trust it, but will follow the groups lead. If nothing comes of Kadaz's question he will take his turn climbing up the rope and out of the garbage pit.
He thinks back to their encounter and wonders if Barber was one of the creatures they destroyed or just working with them. He shakes his head and decides to wait to express his question/concern when the group gets back to the apartment.
Edmund Thursday June 28th, 2007 11:24:32 AM
"I say!"
Edmund slips his rod back onto his belt, but continues to stare at the thing.
"I say," he says again.
(Don't have Dungeoneering! Sorry, guys.)
Thar ail Baerer d20+2=5 d20+2=18 Thursday June 28th, 2007 2:03:54 PM
Looking at the creature, Thar tries to remember what in the blazes it could be. In spite of his knowledge re: Dungeoneering (Know = 5), he still can't recall what it could be.
To the creature, he says in a soothing manner "Don't worry, we won't hurt you. In fact, we'd like to help you Otto. What kind of creature are you and can we help you with food or healing?"
Diplomacy = 18
Kirsten Thursday June 28th, 2007 9:24:14 PM
Despite her inherent ability to help the poor trash-bound "thing" before them, Kirsten can't help but feel a certain degree of disgust.
"As my friends have said," she speaks up to the poor, scared creature. "We're sorry for disturbing you, Otto. Let us help you."
Mira Thursday June 28th, 2007 10:47:31 PM
Mira just stares. "What the...!" escapes from her lips as she looks at the grotesque creature.
"Ugh, sure, luv." she answers the bard.
Mira holds the spell as the others make their exit. Slowly, and carefully, the sorcerer follows suit. Mira never takes her eyes from the creature.
Conner Thursday June 28th, 2007 11:18:25 PM
The fighter keeps a careful eye on teh strange creature, even though it seems harmless enough.
Up, Out and About (DM JohnP) Thursday June 28th, 2007 11:30:32 PM
Arm shouts back to the thing calling itself Otto, agreeing to the proposed plan. The bard then suggests that his companions move back to the rope while he and Mira stand watch.
Instead of immediately retreating, Kadaz and Thar ask for information from "Otto". Both the dwarf and the elf even sweeten the deal with an offer of food.
"Otto", whatever it is, is in the process of settling back down into the trash heap and pulling larger pieces of refuse over itself.
"People. Things. Too fast, too mean for Otto. They leave Otto alone, Otto leave them alone. Otto is otto."
Edmund begins to retch when he realizes that that "Otto" is occasionally stuffing choice bits of garbage into its wide mouth. Kadaz and the others get the impression that, while it can speak, "Otto" is only slightly more intelligent than Birdie.
"Otto good. Top people good. Feed Otto every day. Otto grow big here."
"People, things that use tunnel smell funny. Not like you."
Soon, "Otto" has settled down and only occasional movements are heard. An eyestalk, however, keeps watch on the party. The eyestalk isn't very vigilant, however, and its attention moves off when a rat scurries over the surface of the trash heap.
"Otto say Bye!"
While this exchange is going on, the other members of the party move around the perimeter of the trash heap back to where the rope hangs down the sinkhole wall. Mira waits until all her companions have reached the rope, then moves over herself.
The ascent of the rope is a little more difficult than going down. Fatigue is part of the reason, as is the slime covering everyone's hands. The first people up the rope notice more torches and lanterns than when they first entered the square. As they are working to haul up their companions, a group of people carrying lanterns approach from one of the main streets into the square. The people are gripping the weapons at their sides but have not yet drawn them.
"Plateau City Guard! What's your business here tonight?," demands the tall woman leading the Guardsmen. Kadaz doesn't recognize this woman or any of the other Guards.
Arm Friday June 29th, 2007 6:04:33 AM
Finally rid of the stinking hole, Arm groans inwardly at the sight of the Guard. For the moment, he remains silent, hoping that Kadaz will have better rapport with them. If not, he will chime in and help out when he can.
Shadow Friday June 29th, 2007 8:58:30 AM
Shadow is disgusted by both the creatures behavior (it's eating habits) and by Edmund not being able to stomach what it does. He does not voice his opinion though, and will take his turn climbing the rope.
When he gets to the top and sees the armed group, he sighs slightly. He will keep his hands away from his weapons and will wait for those that know and speak better to the guards to take the lead.
Thar ail Baerer Friday June 29th, 2007 11:15:15 AM
Climbing out of the stink and refuse filled hole, Thar is quite happy to reach the surface. Even the sight of armed guards doesn't dim his happiness too much.
Copying Arm and Shadow, he remains silent and merely wipes slime and grubs from his clothes, thinking of how long it will take to remove his stench.
Edmund Friday June 29th, 2007 4:15:48 PM
Still gagging, Edmund does his best not to look at the creature as he clambers out of the hole and onto the street where his mood is not improved by the approach of what appears to be an angry group of armed soldiers.
"Great. What else could possibly go wrong?" he mutters to himself.
Kadaz (AC 24, HP 46/75) Friday June 29th, 2007 6:40:45 PM
Kadaz eyes the woman carefully. The fact that he doesn't recognize any of the guards at all is troubling to him.
"I am Kadaz Guardson, formerly of the Plateau City Guard, and now a member of The Mithril Order. We've uncovered a threat to Plateau City below, a colony of some evil beings that attacked us without warning. They've fled, sealing their tunnel with stone. Are you here to help us?"
Kadaz pauses just a beat. "And in the refuse pile immediately below this opening is some sort of tentacled being that doesn't appear to be hostile."
He waits, watching carefully. Something isn't quite right here.
Birdie, at the fighter's side, had quite enjoyed the smells of the refuse pile below. But he's ready for home now.
(OOC: I'm off for vacation, back Sunday next. Lenny, could you sub for me again? Thanks.)
Mira d20+2=17 d20+9=28 Friday June 29th, 2007 8:01:01 PM
After a while, Mira manages an exit into the fresh air. After wiping her hands on her pants, she brushes a stray hair from her face, then offers a hand to the woman leading the guards.
"Mira," she offers. "Mira Silver of the Mithril Order. What my companion says is true." The sorcerer tries to read the guardswoman's intent (Sense Motive=17). Mira steps back to stand beside Arm, pushing her spectacles back up her nose. She grins at the guards, hoping the party won't find themselves in another tight spot. (Diplomacy=28, Aid Another should Arm speak on the party's behalf.)
Kirsten Saturday June 30th, 2007 12:18:03 PM
Once out of the pit and confronted with the guards, Kirsten stands to the side of the party. She very calmly arranges her hair, and proceeds to try and look as unthreatening as possible.
She lets the others speak up for now, still not knowing much about the guard or her surroundings.
Talking to the Guard (DM JohnP) Sunday July 1st, 2007 10:43:19 PM
The Guard sergeant listens to Kadaz's and Mira's words while the other members of the Mithril order stand quietly and try their best to look inoffensive and harmless. That's quite a bit easier for some, of course.
The Sergeant looks over her shoulder at the other Guards and mutters, "Any of you heard of him?" When one nods back, the Sergeant turns back to Kadaz.
"Whatever. Well, we got to do this by the numbers."
The Sergeant starts counting off her points using her fingers as she speaks. First, she raises one finger.
"One. We get complaints about noise from the hole, something like a tiger or what not. Odds are, that was you disturbing the sleep of the hardworking folk in this Quarter."
A second finger goes up as the Sergeant gestures towards the sinkhole.
"Two. You confess to bothering Otto. He ... it ... whatever ... is harmless. And he does a service for the people of the Quarter."
Another finger goes up and she points at Kadaz.
"Three. There's that pile of equipment strapped to your back, Kadaz."
The Sergeant counts off her final fingers as she begins to turn and walk.
"Four and five, I was hoping for a quiet night. And I don't need this. So why don't we all walk quietly down to the Post and we can check your story. Or, you can really ruin my night by making us do this the hard way."
"Which will it be?"
The Guard Sergeant stands there as her patrol watches expectantly.
Edmund Monday July 2nd, 2007 1:50:36 AM
Edmund frowns as the guard invites them to the post.
"But, I'm covered in filth and I haven't had my tea," he whinges miserably. "Can't we do this later?"
Edmund is too dirty and too exhausted to even try to be persuasive. He simply stands there, dripping offal, looking as if he might begin crying at any moment.
"We try to help, fighting evil shapeshifting bogies, and this is the thanks we get," he mumbles dismally.
Arm d20+12=23 Monday July 2nd, 2007 5:58:07 AM
Dismayed that Ed is back to his old ways, Arm shoves him none too gently, then says to the captain, "Aye, we will do as you wish. Please pay no attention to our 'friend' here...if he spent HALF as much time helping out as he does whining, we'd be a great order indeed. As far as the equipment that we carry, this is nothing but legal salvage from those who seek to cause great harm to this city. As far as I know, there is no law against taking what they no longer need. If you wish to descend the hole, you will find the bodies of some of them...whatever they are, they are not indiginous to this great city (diplomacy=23).".
Lenny for Kadaz Monday July 2nd, 2007 6:01:25 AM
Kadaz nods his head in agreement to Arm's statement, "Aye, what he says is true. Even though I am not a member of the Guard anymore, I still hold that post in high regard, and I swear upon my service to it that what we say is all true. Sorry about bothering Otto and causing a racket...we thought it was another threat.". He then reaches down a pats Birdie's head comfortingly.
OOC: John, could you please send me Kadaz's sheet again? thanks! :)
Shadow Monday July 2nd, 2007 10:04:34 AM
Shadow, still not comfortable with the guards, will follow the group and shake his head when they agree to go with the guards. He knows he has not really done anything, but old habits are hard to break.
Thar ail Baerer d20+4=24 Monday July 2nd, 2007 10:46:03 AM
Nodding his head in agreement, Thar follows the rest of the group. He'll smile at Birdie and reach down to rub his head and while walking whispers "Hey boy. I know we smell bad but do you smell any more of those yucky creatures like we found in the cave?"
(OOC = I've never tried this, but do I need to do a handle animal check, even if its not my own follower? I'm just trying to commo w/ Birdie and trying to see how he reacts to the guards. Also, if I'm breaking any unwritten laws by doing this on another PC's follower (even though it is a beneficial check), let me know)
Kirsten Monday July 2nd, 2007 11:58:55 AM
She follows along with the others as they head off with the guard. For now, she has nothing to say, trusting that the others will be able to persuade the guard of their innocence.
Mira Monday July 2nd, 2007 8:00:54 PM
Mira's shoulder's droop a little. She had hoped the guard would let the party off. "It shouldn't take too long, Edmund," she says encouragingly to the wizard, while giving Arm the look over the wizard's head. "Soon as we've given our statements, I'll race you to the bath house!"
Arm Tuesday July 3rd, 2007 6:03:27 AM
Arm rolls his eyes and give Mira 'the look' in return, convinced that someday Ed's selfish attitude is going to get them ALL in trouble. After they meet with the guards, he plans on discussing this further with her.
Lenny for Kadaz Tuesday July 3rd, 2007 6:05:00 AM
Kadaz smiles at Thar's kindness toward his pet as they follow the guard back to the barracks.
OOC: As far as I know, Thar, you're not ordering him to do anything, and he already knows that your a friend, so I don't think any kind of animal check is necessary :)
Conner Tuesday July 3rd, 2007 7:28:07 AM
The heavily muscled fighter keeps his thumbs hooked into his belt and away from the hilt of his sword. He follows the guard as requested and trusts in Mira and the others to get them out of this predicament.
Shadow Tuesday July 3rd, 2007 7:52:34 AM
Shadow will follow the directions of the guard and hopes the group does not get caught up in anything since they did nothing wrong. They even helped out the city once again, but unfortunately others don't see that.
