The Guard Post (DM JohnP) Tuesday July 3rd, 2007 10:06:30 PM
The party agrees to accompany the Guard to their post. Just like they "agree" to ignore how the Guard calmly moves to shepherd them along, ensuring that no one gets lost or left behind in the gloom of Outcast Quarter.
Birdie seems relaxed and playful, more so than the trip down into the sinkhole. Thar tries to determine if Birdie smells more of the things that bothered her so much but, despite his empathy with animals, he can't actually talk with them. However, Thar does sense that Birdie isn't as worried as she was.
The trip to the Guard Post isn't long, barely more than across the square towards the river just above the Falls. As the party approaches the river and Falls, the sound of falling water increases in volume until it is difficult to hear much besides. The streets are getting slick when they reach this stretch of Riverside and turn towards the Post. The Guard Sergeant opens the heavy door and motions for everyone to move inside. Once they have entered, she closes the door and the sound of falling water is reduced. The effect is probably not magical, simply very good construction.
The Sergeant points to some chairs and benches, clearly indicating that the party should sit and prepare themselves for a lengthy process. She summons a young half-elf woman, speaks to her and then sends the half-elf out into the night. Some people were close enough to overhear the instructions to "Run to Trade Quarter and check these folks out."
What follows is a lengthy, repetitive questioning from the Guard. Most of the Guard seem just as bored and frustrated as the party, if that were possible. Of course, none of them seem to ready for a bath quiet as much as Edmund, but they do seem eager to be doing something other than repeatedly asking the same questions. The Sergeant oversees all of it, sometimes jumping in to confirm a response.
After nearly an hour, long past the time that Edmund is sure that the bathhouse closes, the runner returns with another familiar person. The short, rotund halfling trailing along behind the half-elf is Constable Rabbitsfoot that the party first encountered during the cult investigation. Of course, the party might remember the constable more for the immense quantity of food he could consume.
Constable Rabbitsfoot nods towards the party before motioning the Guard Sergeant into a room. They are inside for a few minutes before returning to the main part of the Guard post. Rabbitsfoot makes a sweeping motion with his hands and the Guard Sergeant summons all of the Guard and leaves the room with them.
Rabbitsfoot stnads quietly, examining each of the party members in turn before speaking.
"All right, one of you. Tell me what happened. Tell it straight through and I might ask questions at the end."
Edmund Tuesday July 3rd, 2007 10:28:39 PM
Edmund closes his eyes and puts his head in his hands--and immediately reverses this once he realises how foul his hands smell.
Sighing, he lets the others explain their parts, only interjecting when they get to something he did.
Arm d20+12=30 Wednesday July 4th, 2007 9:46:27 AM
With a slight glance at the others, Arm clears his throat and begins to tell Rabbitsfoot everything from the time they tailed Barber into the OQ. He ends it with, "It seems that this city has problems much worse than that of the PCDL. The creatures we found there were definitely not human, elf, dwarf, or halfling, and they are capable of casting strong magic indeed. I fear that something dire is being planned for this city, and we would like to help the guard sort it out.". (diplomacy=30)
Lenny for Kadaz Wednesday July 4th, 2007 9:48:19 AM
Kadaz nods emphatically when Arm is finished, adding. "Aye, as I told yer young Segeant there, I vow on my prior service to the guard that this is all true. This city needs help, and we'd be the ones to give it.".
Shadow Wednesday July 4th, 2007 10:04:40 AM
Shadow tries to be patient, but his mind keeps wandering to what has befallen his old friends at the had of misinformed guards. He tries not to let his immagination run wild, but has to keep looking at his compainions composure and he can take a couple of deep breathes (hopefully he feels look like sighs of boredom).
Thar ail Baerer Wednesday July 4th, 2007 11:11:24 AM
Thar, agitated at the delay, manages to remain silent and lets his more diplomatic friends do the talking. He'll add a point here or there for clarification, if needed, but as an elf in a city not always known for friendliness to elves, he'll keep to himself as much as possible. He carefully looks around the office and tries to look unconcerned.
Conner Wednesday July 4th, 2007 6:09:09 PM
"Arm's right", Conner pipes in. "These creatures changed shapes when they died. I never saw that before!"
Kirsten Wednesday July 4th, 2007 7:47:25 PM
She allows the others to do the talking, and only speaks up when she is spoken too, or has some little point to add.
Mira Wednesday July 4th, 2007 10:58:22 PM
As the others speak their piece, Mira's mind races. "Either the Plateau City Defense League have recurited some powerful allies, or the city group is being used. Muttering under her breath, the woman adds, "and it won't be the first time," as she remembers the PCDL's involvement with the death cultists that tried to raise a licht.
Inteview with the Constable (DM JohnP) Wednesday July 4th, 2007 11:10:47 PM
Contable Rabbitsfoot listens as Arm relates the evening's tale, leaving nothing out. Everyone else sits back, sometimes elaborating on a point but mainly letting the bard do the talking. Rabbitsfoot takes a small notebook from an inner pocket and makes some notes as he listens to the story.
When Arm concludes with the warning, Rabbitsfoot looks around the room at the members of the party. He nods, then pauses before making any further notes.
"What did you do with the bodies of the creatures that you defeated? Did you leave them? Or did you destroy them? Because we're going to need to confirm your story."
After someone answers, Rabbitsfoot goes to the door and summons the Sergeant. After a brief discussion that leaves the Sergeant glaring at the party, she departs. The half-elf runner enters and Rabbitsfoot scribbles a note that he passes to her before turning back to the party. The runner departs the Guard Post, clearly obeying whatever order she was given.
"We're just going to wait here until your story has been checked. Formality, is all, but you're going to have to stay."
Rabbitsfoot settles down in a chair with his notebook, seeming to puzzle over the entries inside. He looks up occasionally at the party, most of whom are getting tired and sleepy by now. Finally, the Guard Sergeant returns, covered in familiar looking filth. She seems somewhat more agitated now and the party is able to overhear parts of the conversation.
"No bodies ... Otto says ... entered, left. That's it ... filthy pit."
Rabbitsfoot turns to the party and smiles.
"Well, that's been cleared up. But, and it's a big but, you're correct about wandering into something bigger than that bunch of goons in the Plateau City Defence League. Unfortunately, I can't let you go wandering back to your residence tonight. I'm going to insist that you accept the hospitality of the Plateau City Constabulary."
"Will you come with me tonight? When it's safe, you will be free to go, I promise you."
"What do you say?"
Edmund Thursday July 5th, 2007 2:25:59 AM
Edmund is devastated.
"One hold-up after another!" he finally exclaims in profound exasperation. "Questioned again and again to no end I can see! Treated like criminals, held as thieves, all for protecting your city because you're too blind or incompetent to do the job yourselves--possibly both! And you sorry lot of rotters want to hole us up here some more, with no tea, no baths, and no sign or word of when we'll be 'permitted' to go!"
Edmund's frustration and anger continues to seethe, "What's to stop you from holding us longer yet? Maybe there will be more delays! Maybe you will ask us to repeat how we saved your bacon ad infinitum until we are utterly spent for lack of breath!"
Setting his teeth firmly, Edmund rounds on the constable with a hither-to unseen ferocity. "Do you have any intention of letting us go!?" he demands. "I tire of this endless, interminable, and indeed insufferable prevarication!"
Arm Thursday July 5th, 2007 6:02:29 AM
Arm groans audibly this time at Ed's impertinence and says to Rabbitsfoot, "Please pay no attention to this one...we strongly suspect that he is not of his right mind. We'd gladly accept your hospitality for the evening, and if you'd care to keep him for an indeterminable amount of time, please do so. We DO ask one boon of you, though. Do you have any type of bathing facilities? Otherwise, I fear we'd be best sleeping outside as to not soil you linens.".
Lenny for Kadaz Thursday July 5th, 2007 6:07:08 AM
Kadaz grimaces at Ed's outburst and thinks, "that fool is going to get us in trouble yet.". Even though he has stuck up for him in the past, sooner or later he's going to reach a breaking point. He leans down to Birdie and whispers, "If he keeps causing trouble, when no one's looking, sic 'em..".
Shadow Thursday July 5th, 2007 10:32:41 AM
At Edmund's triad, Shadow cringes and hopes the guards do not take it any more personal than some of them have already. Shadow overhears the comment Kadaz makes to Birdie and a huge smile comes to his face, and he tries not to laugh but that is easy to do when he remembers where they are. He does not like the sound of all this waiting around and staying with the guards, btu he will not voice his concerns.
Mira d20=4 Thursday July 5th, 2007 4:30:52 PM
Mira's eyes narrow behind her spectacles as she eyes Rabbitsfoot (Sense Motive=4+mods, don't have my sheet with me). The woman gains little from her observations, so asks in a quiet voice "what exactly to you mean by 'the hospitality of the Plateau City Constabulary'?"
The sorcerer is hoping it isn't a cell.
Thar ail Baerer Thursday July 5th, 2007 7:31:34 PM
Done with being patient, Thar says in a firm but fair manner, "Sir, I must protest this delay. If we are not being charged with something, then we need to be let free. In regards to our protection, we are the best judge of that and as we have shown, we can handle ourselves quite well. As you have said, our story checks out and we have been honest with you. Our reputation in this town is impeccable and we have been strong supporters here in the community."
Pausing to catch his breath, Thar continues, "If you want to keep an eye on us, then send some guards to keep watch over our apartment and they can testify that we will spend the night there in peace. But as I said before, since we aren't being charged with anything, we need to be released."
Conner d20+1=14 Thursday July 5th, 2007 11:05:27 PM
"Shut it, Edmund! It's a damn sight better than spending the night downstairs with Otto!" Conner glares at the mage to make sure his point is taken.
This is not the first time that Conner will have spent the night under the watchful eye of the guard. He recalls the night spent in the very cells that Rabbitsfoot speaks of just after he first met Mira, Kadaz and the others. There were also a few other occassions when he spent at least part of a leave from the militia resting in gaol.
"Constable, since we are not under arrest, I assume we can keep our weapons and perhaps request a small barrel of ale to wash the taste of the sewers from our throats?" [Diplomacy=14]
Off to the Night's Accommodation (DM JohnP) Thursday July 5th, 2007 11:34:28 PM
Rabbitsfoot rocks back on his heels with the vehemence of Edmund's tirade. When the others try to intercede, Rabbitsfoot waves them off.
"Arrest? Who said anything about arrest? I certainly didn't."
Rabbitsfoot looks around to determine how the group is responding to his words.
"Now, 'preventive detention' might be an apt phrase. Or, 'protective custody'. Doesn't matter, really. You simply don't know what you've stumbled into. Lucky, really, that you managed to attract the attention of the Guard here. No telling what might happen if you wandered back into Trade Quarter right now."
"Bathing facilities? Certainly, since it surely seems warranted. Food and drink, of course. Better be, anyway since I'm feeling a might peckish myself. Anyway, our transport should be here soon and then we can be off. So, you might as well sit back down and rest."
Rabbitsfoot does just that, sitting and resting. From somewhere in his clothing, he retrieves an apple and starts paring it with a very sharp dagger that seemed to suddenly appear in his hand. Finally, after Rabbitsfoot has neatly consumed the apple, there's a loud knock at the door of the Guard post and a tall human walks in. After a moment, everyone realizes that it is Constable Gormley, the partner of Rabbitsfoot. He holds out a bundle of long hooded cloaks to the party.
"Here, put these on before we go outside."
The Constables each don a robe while they wait for the party to follow suit. Even though no words are spoken, it is apparent that alternate means of persuasion might be used.
When everyone has donned one of the cloaks, Gormley indicates that the hoods should be raised so that no one's face is visible. Gormley opens the door of the post and points towards a dark, unmarked river boat that is moored to the riverwall on the opposite side of Riverside Street.
Edmund Friday July 6th, 2007 12:23:58 AM
Ignoring the others, Edmund continues to huff, muttering something like, "protective custody, indeed!" When Thar speaks up as well, Edmund nods sternly--it is clear he will resist any attempt to 'disarm' him or his friends.
"I will agree to this," Edmund says as he pulls on the hooded cloak, "but I do so under duress. Methinks there's some plot afoot, and this whole business stinks!"
"No pun intended," he adds swiftly, eyes glinting beneath the hood.
Arm Friday July 6th, 2007 5:52:36 AM
After donning the cloak and hood, Arm begins to wonder what is really going on here, "If I may, sir, could you at least give us a small idea of what we've stumbled into? Don't get me wrong...we appreciate your hospitality, and perhaps we can help the Guard remedy this problem?".
Lenny for Kadaz d20+7=21 Friday July 6th, 2007 5:57:47 AM
After putting his cloak on as well, Kadaz picks up Birdie and holds him close so that he won't be as visible, "Stay still for a bit, boy, and I'll let ye down soon." (handle animal=21. For some reason, he can't get the feeling out of his head that it's going to be a long time before they see their apartment again. Putting on a brave face, he whispers to Arm when he has a chance, "I donna like what's goin on here. Stay alert.".
Shadow Friday July 6th, 2007 9:42:38 AM
Shadow will don the cloak and put the hood up, although 'I could do better disquising myself' Shadow thinks to himself. He will pull up the hood and follow the others out. He is getting a little concerned with the precautions that the guards are taking and wonders just what they have stumbled upon.
Thar ail Baerer d20+12=18 Friday July 6th, 2007 10:04:28 AM
Having said his peace and reassured since they are at least allowed to keep their weapons, Thar will wear the cloak, as well as raise the hood. He'll join Ed, who seems likeminded in the current situation, and whispers "I'm not to happy with this whole deal either. I'm out of spells but do you have any magic left, if we have to blast our way out of here."
He'll also watch intently the goings on and look for suspicous things.
Spot = 18
Mira Friday July 6th, 2007 7:11:18 PM
Mira accepts the cloak, checking it first for magical auras (Detect Magic) and such. If it appears safe to her, she dons it, and queues up with the rest.
Conner Friday July 6th, 2007 11:05:43 PM
The fighter dons the cloak and pulls it over his head, hiding his features deep within it's cowls. "Yes, let us in on the big secret. What have we stumbled across, and why does it put us in danger in the trade quarter?" Conner asks the constable as he readies to venture forth.
Edmund (2nd, illegal post) Saturday July 7th, 2007 12:47:36 AM
Edmund whispers to Thar, hoping to avoid being overheard, "I have a few left, but not the best ones, to be honest. I'm afraid if something comes up, I'd have to rely on my rod."
He brightens a little at that, "Of course, that's not such a bad thing, is it?"
Kirsten Saturday July 7th, 2007 11:52:31 AM
The paladin seems wary of having to 'hide' her identity in such a way, muttering dully, "Is this really... necessary?" She does as the others, despite her deslike of the idea suddenly.
Kirsten wanders over to walk near Edmund as well, whispering to him, "I don't like this at all... at all."
"What have I gotten myself into?" she thinks to herself.
Rabbitsfoot's Story (DM JohnP) Saturday July 7th, 2007 10:20:04 PM
Everyone accepts the offered cloaks and dons them. Rabbitsfoot and Gormley pull up the hoods on their cloaks, too, then usher the party across the width of Riverside Street to the moored riverboat. Gormley moves ahead and assists everyone with boarding the gently rocking boat. With the hoods up, it's difficult to tell anything about the crew of the boat.
After the last party member boards and Birdie is settled on the floor of the boat, Rabbitsfoot and Gormley enter the cabin of the boat and pull dark curtains shut, blocking all vision in and out of the cabin. Rabbitsfoots motions for the party to sit while he sits himself, sighing as he settles onto the cushioned bench. Gormley pokes his head through the curtains to provide some instructions to the crew, then sits himself. After everyone is settled, Rabbitsfoot clears his throat.
"Well, to start with, a couple hours ago the Guard post in Trade Quarter was roused with reports of fighting, combat really, in the headquarters of the Plateau City Defence League. Of course, that location was well known to the Guard so they had no problem finding it. When the Guards got there, the fight was over. No signs of the attackers, but several PCDL thugs had been killed. More significantly, so was Fendrik Vedder. His second-in-command, Davern Barber, had been badly injured and was unconcious. The survivors clearly described the attackers - a group of eight, wielding magic and weapons. And all of them, to a one, matched your descriptions."
Rabbitsfoot waits for the reactions of the part before continuing to speak.
"Of course, considering your history with the PCDL, the Guard didn't really take the statements of the surviving thugs at face value. So they talked to people in the neighbourhood, including those not inclined to sympathy with the PCDL. And the stories agreed - a group of people matching your descriptions had been seen skulking about the neighbourhood earlier, then later busting into the PCDL headquarters."
"So, you can imagine what happened next. Davern Barber managed to rouse himself and there was already muttering about Fendrik Vedder being a "martyr for the cause". And how the lot of you were "agents of the elves". Of course, Gormley and I had been called in and were starting to investigate, which meant finding you. We had Guards posted at all your known haunts - your residence, Sampson's, the baths."
"Then the runner showed up from the Guard Post in Outcast Quarter. Gormley stayed back to control discussion in Trade Quarter while I hurried over here. And you pretty much know from there. Your description of the tunnels was correct, although there weren't any bodies left there. And Otto ... well ... after a little incentive, it confirmed your story."
Rabbitsfoot pauses again, looking to see how the party reacts to this news. Gormley has been sitting quietly, seeming nearly asleep. The boat has been steadily making its way upstream during this recitation from Rabbitsfoot but there is no way to tell how fast it is travelling.
"Of course, Gormley and I put two and two together. Or, rather, I did the mental work and Gormley did the heavy lifting. No matter."
"Our guess is that you weren't supposed to come out of that hole. Or, if you did, that you'd blindly wander back into Trade Quarter and .... well ... meet an angry mob. What we don't know is who exactly organized this little escapade."
"Davern Barber might have been involved, of course. And whoever those dopplegangers were working for, too. You say that one of them escaped, right?"
The boat shuddered gently, then rocks back and forth. Everyone realizes that it has come to rest against a dock or landing of some kind.
"Ahhh ... this should be it. Courtesy of the Plateau City Constabulary, you're going to be put up in one of the best inns in the City. A suite, actually, with your own bath facilities since that seems to be important. Now, before we leave the boat to walk to the inn, do you have any questions?"
Edmund Sunday July 8th, 2007 1:01:17 AM
Shocked beyond comprehension, Edmund goggles at the constable as the story is related. Early on in the tale, his mouth drops open. Edmund continues to gape at Rabbitsfoot until the story comes to completion. Only then, when deluxe suites with bathing facilities are mentioned, does he shut his mouth quickly with a snap.
The shock is momentary. Edmund is silent almost for a whole minute--an eternity, in Edmund terms--before he speaks.
"So these dopplegangers smashed up the PCDL headquarters and killed that oaf Vedder? Good riddance to bad rubbish, there. I'd almost like to thank them, if they didn't try to pin the blame on us. And then try to kill us in a pit of filth."
Edmund looks thoughtful for a moment before he continues,
"So one of them matched my description? One of them was copying... me?" Edmund shakes his head in disbelief. "I can't imagine it, I just can't imagine it."
The concept of another Edmund might be hard for the real Edmund to imagine, but it is a concept perhaps terrifying to others.
Shaking his head to dispel the unbelievable image from his mind, Edmund looks to the others before turning again to Rabbitsfoot.
"Now, about those baths..."
Kadaz Sunday July 8th, 2007 8:09:11 AM
Kadaz is very uneasy at being on a boat again. But that unease quickly pales to the anger that grows as he listens to Rabbitsfoot story. Kadaz's frown deepens to new depths as the story goes on and he absent-mindedly runs his thumb down the edge of his axe. Once Edmund is done Kadaz asks his questions.
"Why us? I mean, why do the dopplegangers, or their masters, view us as a threat? We have been leading opposition to the PCDL, but if that had been a front of the dopplegangers, why would they then turn around and kill them all just to frame us?"
He pauses to think a bit more. "Or have we come close to uncovering a different scheme, one much bigger than the PCDL?"
"And about those dopplegangers. Where else, or who else, are they in Plateau City?"
"I hope you have Darven Barber also in protective custody. And in perhaps less comfortable surroundings, right? I hope you can get useful information out of him."
"And finally, for now, what can we do to help? I, for one, trust that the guard will treat us fairly once the facts are known. But having creatures with our faces commit crimes will make it harder for us to move in the city. I am very, very unhappy that someone is trying to smear my name." Kadaz starts growling at this, and Birdie picks up on the tension in the boat.
"By the way, did the fake Mithril Order also have a fake Birdie?"
(Thank you Lenny for posting for Kadaz.)
Conner Sunday July 8th, 2007 11:51:51 PM
The fighter nods his understanding from beneath the cowls of his cloak. "Don't understand why the end of the PCDL would get folks so riled up. Barber and his like have caused more than enough trouble for everyone in the quarter."
Arm Monday July 9th, 2007 7:53:59 AM
Arm hangs his head at the news, "It just keeps getting worse and worse," he thinks. Thankful to be sitting next to Mira, he links his hand with hers and lays an arm across Kadaz' shoulders as he says, "What our diminutive friend says here is true...these 'dopplegangers' can apparently manifest themselves as anyone they choose, so how do we know WHO the enemy is anymore? I fear that we may NEVER be able to return to our abode now. Do you think it's possible for us to arrange to have someone clear out our residence for us so we can find somewhere else to stay?".
When Rabbitsfoot's attention is elsewhere, Arm nudges Mira and lifts his chin toward him, raising his eyebrows as if to say, "How do we know HE isn't one?".
Kirsten Monday July 9th, 2007 9:35:22 AM
Rather morose as she sits there hidden within the folds of that dark cloak. Kirsten does not at all like the idea of someone parading around as her, perhaps doing serious damage to her reputation. And then, what makes Rabbitsfoot so sure that they are the real things and not another bunch of dopplegangers? For that matter, what makes her so sure she is the real Kirsten? The paladin lets out a little grunt and shakes her head to clear her thoughts.
"This is madness," she mutters, to no one in particular. "Creatures posing as other people, hardly know what's real and what isn't anymore."
She frowns and looks over at Edmund. "How do I know you're the REAL Edmund?" She starts to poke him, obviously very distressed by all this... business.
Shadow Monday July 9th, 2007 1:05:40 PM
Shadow listens closely to the tale that Rabbitsfoot tells and he finds it hard to believe. He is in shock and still confused when the others start talking about all that has gone on. He listens and wonders a lot of the same things that the others voice, but one question does not come up, "Whos descriptions do you have from the witnesses. Some of us have kept a low profile and one of us is brand new to the order." he glances at Kirsten. "It might mean they do not know about all of us, and we might still be able to help is some ways." Shadow says hopefully.
When Kirsten starts asking about if we know who is who (or not), Shadow looks at Birdie and realizes that Birdie seems to know. "I think Birdie might be the key here. He seemed to get upset everytime one of those creatures was around. Just maybe dogs can smell or sense these doppleganger things." Shadow says to the group.
Not too bad for a holiday week, keep up the good posts everyone.
Thar ail Baerer Monday July 9th, 2007 4:42:36 PM
Pondering what they know, Thar says "I'm not so sure that hiding is such a good idea. We should consider drawing the foes out and making them implement their plan faster than they intended? Also, if they are trying to be subtle or hide, we could nullify that by forcing them out into the open. I guess I just don't like hiding from a threat and believe in approaching it directly."
Mira d20+9=15 Monday July 9th, 2007 6:53:23 PM
Mira grasps Arm's hand in hers, and squeezes, perhaps a little too tightly, as a thought crosses her mind. "The young half-elf!" she cries, "the one with the impossibly blue eyes! Could he have been one of them?"
Mira slumps in her seat, leaning heavily on the bard. ""Oh!" she cries out, "Arm! I know not what to think anymore."
After a moment of reflection, the gears start to whir in the sorcerer's mind, and she gives voice to her speculations. "Could be whoever or whatever is behind this would want to gain support for the PCDL's activities in a bizarre and twisted sort of way. You know," the sorcerer continues, "gain sympathy for 'the cause' with a ruse. You know," the woman tries to catch the others up in her idea, "a strategem or trick to confond folks, and lead them off in another direction. Get them believing folks were out to get the PCDL, and build sympathy for their cause with this stupid attack!?"
Mira looks hopefully to her party, and to the attendant constabulary, hoping she doesn't sound too crazy.
Diplomacy=15
Silent Contemplation (DM JohnP) Monday July 9th, 2007 11:19:48 PM
Rabbitsfoot nods as he listens to what the party is saying and theorizing.
"Good ideas, all. All we can say now is that we were, quite frankly, surprised by what happened with the Plateau City Defence League. We didn't think that the doppelgangers rearly cared about them, let alone would bother working together. Maybe we'll have to follow that idea along."
Gormley looks over and nods slightly.
"Ahhh ... keep talking amongst yourselves since it might make me remember something. We started trying to find these doppelgangers after the business with the house on Helm's Way. Somehow, you've got the doppelgangers' attention."
Edmund Tuesday July 10th, 2007 12:34:19 AM
Edmund looks thoughtful, despite the pokes from Kirsten. "There's only one me, dontcha know! Even if some other Edmund might come along."
When Gormley speaks, Edmund glances over, surprised. "That's a coincedence! We just completed some paperwork to purchase a house on Helm's Way ourselves for use as an headquarters. Small world, what?"
Edmund furrows his brow suddenly.
"Hang on," he says. "What time is it? Will we still be able to get dinner at this hour?"
Arm Tuesday July 10th, 2007 6:03:38 AM
Arm brightens a bit, both by Shadow's comment about Birdie and the realization that Mira needs him as much as he does her. Leaning over to kiss the top of Mira's head gently, he continues, "It seems to me that the dopplegangers were using the PCDL for thier own purposes, to keep the violence against the elves going, but for what purpose? Is THAT the key? Do the elves know something that could jeopardize whatever they have in mind? I for one do not, at least I THINK I don't. I'd like to get to a library and research this further, if I am able.".
Shadow Tuesday July 10th, 2007 9:13:58 AM
After realizing what his own conclusion about the creatures and Birdie's unease, he walks over the dog and scratches Birdie's head (just like he has seen Kadaz do). "Thank you Birdie, and I hope you will let us know if there are anymore of those creatures around."
"I for one would like to make some contacts of my own to see if there is anything going on that the guards might not be aware of." Shadow hints about going to the Guild. He will wait to see what the group and Rabbitsfoot think about that.
Kirsten Tuesday July 10th, 2007 3:00:47 PM
Kirsten is silent, for the most part, as she listens to the others speak their minds. Something seems to bother her, however, especially after Edmund's comment about the house on Helm's Way. The paladin shakes her head.
"What if this incident with the doppleganger's has nothing to do with the elves? Maybe all your poking around at the house is what started all this trouble, eh? That must have something to do with this, it can't just be coincidence."
She looks to the others, obviously having not entirely approved of their 'scouting' of the place. Kirsten shrugs.
Kadaz Tuesday July 10th, 2007 5:35:03 PM
"I really like problems that I can cut with my axe. I think I'm getting a headache." He looks over at Rabbitsfoot and thinks a minute. "But I'm sure that where ever you're taking us there will be good food. I'm looking forward to that."
Conner Tuesday July 10th, 2007 9:15:48 PM
"The connection must be that house. We tried to purchase it but were told that the Constabulary had sealed it off. What led to your investigation of teh place to begin with?"
Thar ail Baerer Tuesday July 10th, 2007 9:39:33 PM
Agreeing with several members of his party, Thar says "Yes, i think you all have hit on something. It seems that the house is a connection here, and you all have a good point by asking what led to the investigation. Rabbitsfoot or Gormley, what can you tell us?"
Take Time to Sleep On It (DM JohnP) Tuesday July 10th, 2007 11:37:11 PM
Rabbitsfoot and Gormley listen to what the party has to say about the matter but don't share anything about what they are thinking. Instead, Gormley stands and leaves the cabin of the riverboat. From the movement, it's apparent that he has stepped onto the pier or dock to which the boat is moored. Rabbitsfoot motions for the party to raise the hoods again before leaving the boat.
Once everyone is on what turns out to be a pier, it's apparent that they are in Circus Quarter, a part of the city where they haven't gone much before. They were expected because Gormley is speaking with a detachment of Guards who move to screen the party once they leave the pier. Birdie stays close to Kadaz but isn't nervous or upset by what is happening.
Gormley motions and the Guards begin leading everyone north through Circus Quarter. They don't slow down, though, and it seems that they are headed into Dragon Quarter. Most of the time they stay on major streets but they finally turn onto a side street. After going around a slight curve, the Guards lead everyone to the side door of an inn. When they get close, the party realizes that it is the Golden Gryphon, one of the finest places in the City. The side door is clearly provided for the purposes of discretion since it allows the party, Gormley and Rabbitsfoot to enter the inn and climb a staircase. Gormley indicates that they should keep going until the top floor is reached. Gormley moves ahead, then, and uses a key to open a door. He pushes it open and motions everyone to enter.
Once they do so, even Edmund is speechless. The room ... suite, rather ... is clearly not intended for run-of-the-mill guests of the street. If they had to guess, maybe it would be used by diplomatic missions in the City for short periods of time. Or any similar group that needs a large number of rooms and space. There are bedrooms enough for everyone and, when someone bothers to check, a private bath with plumbed hot and cold water. Most people's attention is on the cold buffet that has been set out on a table in the dining area of the common room.
"Don't get used to this," Rabbitsfoot says as he heads towards the food.
"It's back the same-old for you once the mob is settled down and we can arrange a magistrate's finding in the matter. But, for tonight and maybe the next couple days, you'll be staying here. Don't use room service yourself, get one of the Guards here to do it. Maybe tomorrow we'll get you out doing some legwork for us."
The last bit of this is rather muffled because Rabbitsfoot has started eating from the plate stacked high with cold meats, cheese and fruit that he has assembled. He waves a hand towards another table where beverages are arranged.
"About the house on Helm's Way. A citizen complained some time back about a neighbour acting strangely. Then some disppearances were noted. When we started looking into it, all the 'victims' were .... ahhh, 'clients' ... of the house on Helm's Way. We didn't know it was doppelgangers until we tried getting someone inside ... then they simply closed up, leaving more disappearances. We really wanted to find a list or something like that, but never did."
"Think on who you talked to, who set you on this mission, who might have been actually someone or something else. That might be where we start. Or, the house, again."
Arm Wednesday July 11th, 2007 6:03:30 AM
As Arm begins to pick at the food thoughtfully, a picture of the strange elf forms in his mind. He tells Rabbitsfoot about him, then asks Mira, "Do you remember his name, love? Not that it matters much if he isn't who he claimed to be...".
Thar ail Baerer Wednesday July 11th, 2007 8:19:36 AM
Trying to remember some of the events leading up to this, Thar adds "What about that strange elf that asked us for help? Birdie didn't seem comfortable around him and the elf may be our key? I'm trying to remember all he told us, since that could help."
To Rabbitsfoot, he repeats the initial conversations they had with the elf, especially in regards to sending them after what turned out to be dopplegangers.
Shadow Wednesday July 11th, 2007 11:05:08 AM
Shadow looks at the food and again is surprised at just how much food the halfling can eat. He will help himself out and try to recall anything that might seem unusual about the last couple of days (anything that has not already been discussed, since almost everything has been unusual). He shakes his head trying to figure anything out, "I am not sure I can recall anything else that has not been discussed already." He looks at the others to see if anyone else has something for the guard.
Edmund Wednesday July 11th, 2007 4:38:22 PM
"Elves?" Edmund mumbles vacantly. "Yes, Elves. Blue eyes. Yes."
Edmund stares at the food. Then, he hurries to help himself before dashing off to the baths so as to be the first to get clean.
Woe to those who must until Edmund is done for their turn.
Kirsten Wednesday July 11th, 2007 6:02:05 PM
Kirsten absently picks at the food offered to them, still trying to wrap her mind about everything that is happening around her. When the opportunity arises, she will have herself a bath and will attempt to clean the stench from her armor.
Conner Wednesday July 11th, 2007 10:11:00 PM
"MacConal, that was the name he gave! Means son o Conal. Said he lives in the Hind Quarter, least since the troubles began. Friends by the name of Jenna and Anton, but I didn't catch any last names...strangest thing though...blue eyes on an elf. S'pose he was one of those shapeshifters and not an elf at all?
Conner relays as much as he can remember of the 'elf' and his request of the Mithril Order. He also tells the two constables about the battle beneath the city and how one called out that none were to leave alive.
A Plan for the Morning (DM JohnP) Wednesday July 11th, 2007 11:32:20 PM
The buffet table is thoroughly savaged by everyone, although some make at least a token gesture at restraint. While they eat, the discussion turns to the elf calling himself MacConal who set them on this wild goose chase. Something about his appearance seemed wrong and, perhaps more importantly, Birdie didn't like the fellow. That, at least, is a starting point for investigation. Perhaps there are more people or places that they might check back on.
However, the lure of hot running water calls Edmund and some others away. Kirsten retires to her room, too, and is happy to find a box of rags, brushes and armor-cleaning solvent under the counter.
Rabbitsfoot and Gormley listen while everyone discusses the plan for the morning. Before anyone retires, the two Constables prepare to depart.
"Feel free to investigate tomorrow. But I wouldn't advise going anywhere inside the River's Loop - Rogue, Trade, Guild or Merchant Quarters - before this thing with the Plateau City Defence League is dealt with. Going to Hindquarter is probably okay."
After saying that, Rabbitsfoort departs with Gormley in tow. The half-elf hasn't been saying very much but he seems to be the quieter, more physical side of the partnership. When Rabbitsfoot opens the door, the party can see two Guards outside the suite. Shortly after, the Guards knock and two inn workers come to clear the buffet, taking everything that Kadaz and Conner do not claim.
Morning comes quietly in this part of Plateau City. Or, at least, it does in this calibre of inn. Someone opens the door to the hallway to speak to the Guards there and room service appears shortly afterwards with a breakfast buffet. From all appearances, it was Rabbitsfoot who made the meal arrangements.
Once they decide to hit the streets, it's a relatively quick walk over to Hind Quarter and an easy matter for Arm and Shadow to get some rumors and information about MacConal's whereabouts. The party finally finds the young elf sitting with several other elves outside a food stall in the market near the Temple of Gargul.
Arm Thursday July 12th, 2007 6:04:46 AM
After feeding his hunger and getting a much-needed bath, Arm sleeps only intermittantly, the current problem constantly surfacing in his mind.
Once they reach the Hind Quarter and spy MacConal, he pulls Shadow and Thar to the side, "I think it's best that only the three of us question him at the moment, if he truly IS an elf, he may be more open to us than to the rest.". To Mira he says, "Try to find a member of the Guard and have them pass a message to Rabbitsfoot that we've found MacConal. Take Conner or Kadaz with you for safety. If the action moves from here, one of us will stay behind to let you know what's what.".
Kadaz Thursday July 12th, 2007 7:07:50 AM
The bed so soft and comfortable that Kadaz can barely force himself out of it in the morning. "I've got to get one of these for home" he thinks to himself.
The breakfast is way more than the folks there can eat, so Kadaz takes several donuts to the guards outside their door. "Here guys, have some. Thanks for watching."
While making plans for the day he wonders. "If that blue-eyed elf was a doppleganger, could it have changed form and look like something else now? But, it is our best bet, I guess."
Shadow Thursday July 12th, 2007 10:12:21 AM
Shadow will enjoy the meal and then a nice bath. He however is not sure he likes being 'protected' and wanders around the 'suite' checking for hiden doors and peepholes. Once he has done his 'rounds', if he finds nothing he will go ahead and retire to his room. Finding the bed comfortable it is hard not to allow himself to relax and fall asleep (which he will eventually do). If he finds anything he will let the others know and determine if there is anyone there.
Once the group has breakfast and move to the Hind Quarter(what a name, lol) Shadow will try and see if there is anybody who might recognize the 'Mithril Order'. When the spot MacConal, and Arm suggests that only the three with elven blood approach he nods. He then turns to Kadaz, "Do you think Birdie would come with us, just to see if he detects anything wrong about this group. I am just checking because with what we all saw yesterday I am not sure that I can trust my own senses anymore."
Thar ail Baerer Thursday July 12th, 2007 11:51:16 AM
After a nice evening and night of sleeping, albeit with a full stomach, Thar gets up and enjoys the beautiful morning. He says his prayers and then leaves with his friends.
Agreeing with Arm, Thar follows Shadow and Arm to speak with the elf. "I agree with Shadow, since we'll need to have him as our doppleganger detector."
If they agree, he'll wander over the the elf and in elven, say "Blessings to you in the name of God, my friend. I am a priest of Yhwh and am looking for a friend of mine named MacConal. He told me he lives here in this quarter and I wanted to visit with him. Can you direct me to where he may be found?"
Edmund d20+3=11 Thursday July 12th, 2007 3:09:46 PM
Arriving at the stall with the others, Edmund notes there are several other elves with MacConal. Narrowing his eyes slightly, Edmund tries to get a look at them to see if they, too, sport the unnatural blue eyes of MacConal. (Spot=11)
Letting the others do the talking, Edmund rests one hand on his rod just in case things turn ugly. As he glances around, he notices the temple of Gargul and frowns. Not the sort of place one would expect to find decent folk sitting around.
Edmund looks at MacConal and his friends, even more suspicious of them now than before. Being outside the temple of Gargul has practically settled the matter for Edmund.
Conner d20+1=19 d20+4=16 Thursday July 12th, 2007 10:44:30 PM
Conner sinks back into the crowd of people in th emarket and finds a position from which he can keep an eye on MacConal's table without being immediately noticable. [Hide=19]. From there he scans the area to see if any trouble lurks nearby, or if MacConal or his friends have readied a weapon [Spot=16]
MacConal (DM JohnP) Thursday July 12th, 2007 10:50:23 PM
Once everyone is in Sister Square, near the Temple of Gargul in Hind Quarter, it didn't take too many questions to find MacConal. Arm suggested that only the elves approach him, while Mira and someone else went back to take word to the Constables. Before he, Shadow and Thar move to speak with MacConal, Shadow suggests that Birdie accompany them. Kadaz motions for Birdie to accompany the trio while he hangs back.
Thar takes the lead in approach MacConal, speaking to him in Elven and declaring friendship. MacConal looks up at Thar and the others, squinting with the bright light. The elves eyes are not blue, and don't look much different than the typical elf. Birdie waits patiently beside Thar, tongue lolling out even while he looks back at Kadaz and the pocket where she suspects that the dwarf has concealed some donuts.
"I'm MacConal. But I don't know you, friend", MacConal replies.
"I don't believe that we've even met, in fact. Why do you think that you know me?"
Arm d20+12=23 Friday July 13th, 2007 6:02:20 AM
Arm groans at both the change in appearance of MacConal and the fact that Birdie seems to find him non-agressive, "This must be the REAL one," he thinks.
He then approaches MacConal and bows slightly. Also in elven, he continues, "We are very sorry to bother you and your friends on such a fine day, but may my companions and I have a quick word with you? We have some disturbing news to tell. By the way, My name is Armathen Ebano, but you may call me Arm. My two friends here are Shadow and Thar. Again, we sincerely apologize for the intrustion, but our news is very important nonetheless.". (diplomacy=23)
Thar ail Baerer Friday July 13th, 2007 8:26:07 AM
Shaking his head as he realizes the same thing that Arm does, Thar apoligizes and listens to Arm's comments. He is a little relieved that Birdie isn't reacting as he did before the fake MacConal.
Shadow d20+7=15 d20+2=10 Friday July 13th, 2007 10:36:57 AM
Seeing the difference in the elf and how he is reacting, Shadow comes to the same conclusion as his companions. He will listen to what the others have to say, and will keep an eye out for anything that does not seem to belong in the area. Shadow is pretty sure that the dopplegangers are probably not around, but you never know.

Edmund Friday July 13th, 2007 12:33:21 PM
Left behind by Thar, Shadow, and Arm, Edmund waits for them to return and passes the time by fussing at everyone else. "You know, I'm half-elven," he says bitterly. "Just in case you didn't know, though I think I've said it before."
Finding something clean to sit down on, Edmund grumbles away. "I always get left out of the good stuff. But, when it comes to diving into garbage pits, I know I can count on being invited. Pfui!"
Kadaz Saturday July 14th, 2007 8:27:38 AM
As the party finds the real MacConal and Birdie doesn't mind him Kadaz starts to wonder just what about the shape changers bothers Birdie. Scent? Some sort of bad vibrations? Kadaz shares his thoughts with the group, wondering if they might be able to duplicate Birdie's ability somehow.
Kirsten Saturday July 14th, 2007 9:05:18 AM
The paladin stays off to the side and out of the way as the others approach MacConal. Kirsten looking around the area somewhat curiously, before she finds a place to sit some distance away.

Conner watches the meeting of the elves from a distance.
Talking to MacConal (DM JohnP) Sunday July 15th, 2007 2:17:57 PM
MacConal looks up at Arm, motioning for the bard to continue speaking.
Everyone else waits for MacConal's reaction. While they wait, they might be thinking of some of the other people they encountered the day before that Birdie also reacted to. Perhaps tracking down those people might be worthwhile ...
Mira d20+2=17 Sunday July 15th, 2007 9:17:45 PM
Mira makes a little frownie face when Arm instructs her to leave off investigating with the group, and fetch the guard. Instead of doing as she was instructed, she falls back into the anonymity of the people in the market, and takes up a place with Conner.
Mira's thoughts roam back to the events of the past two days--the little elf boy who fetched them to stop the men who were trying to deface the monument. Fendrik and Davern were in attendance. The sorcerer saw them make their get-away. MacConal and his request that the party stop some mysterious 'next time' and 'bigger event' that the PCDL were planning.
The Plateau City Guard had always showed up...better late then never. Tomlin, he seemed a good sort. The female sargeant, didn't recognize her. Rabbitsfoot...Gormley. They seemed okay. Right? No matter where the sorcerer's mind roams, it always comes 'round to the PCDL and their vendetta against the elves of Plateau City.
But, who else could be mixed up in this?
Mira watches, and waits. She pays special attention to anyone else who seems to be watching the conversation with McConnal.

Edmund Monday July 16th, 2007 4:21:14 AM
Edmund continues to grouse, fuss, complain, whinge, and otherwise make a nuisance of himself in the absence of baths, pork pies, and tea to distract him.
"Are we done yet?" he moans plaintively to anyone not fed up with listening to him (or to the nearest person, if everyone is fed up with listening to him). "It has to be sandwich time by now."
Arm Monday July 16th, 2007 6:00:43 AM
Arm smiles broadly at Mac Conal and thanks him for his time. Before he starts in, he says to Thar, "Keep an eye on Birdie, will you?", knowing that he will get the meaning of his words.
Continuing to Mac Conal, he says, "It seems that another who looks exactly like you and using your name recently hired us for a job...a job that we were not meant to return from. We have since discovered that this creature was,"as he lowers his voice so only the two of them can hear, "a doppleganger."
Raising the volume so he can be heard normally again, he continues, "We were wondering if you've happened to run into anyone that seemed strange or out of sorts with you as of late, and what happened?". He then looks at the elf hopefully, hoping for some answers or more leads.

Thar ail Baerer Monday July 16th, 2007 10:18:11 AM
Thar, nodding at Arm, kneels down and gives Birdie a few dried meat chunks. He rubs his shoulder and pretends that he is just playing with him. Whispering, he says "Well boy, do you smell anything like before? Any of those yucky creatures?" He continues playing with Birdie, but uses those actions to see if any of the elves are acting suspicously. He thinks to himself "I wonder why they chose MacConal to impersonate and where they would have got his name from?"
Shadow d20+7=14 d20+2=6 Monday July 16th, 2007 11:19:28 AM
Shadow will listen to what MacConal has to say in regards to Arm's questions, but he is also looking around to see if he sees anything out of place. His mind wanders back to the recent events and tries to single out any strange people that the group might have encountered.
Kadaz Monday July 16th, 2007 8:15:45 PM
Kadaz walks quietly with the group, replaying the past few days in his mind. The first time Birdie was uneasy was at Sampsons when McConnel showed up. Was there anyone else new there? He can't think of anyone. Kirsten? He eyes the paladin suspiciously.
Kirsten Monday July 16th, 2007 9:40:59 PM
The paladin looks over just as Kadaz eyes her, and she frowns.
"Don't worry, I am hardly a doppleganger."
Kirsten sighs, her thoughts wandering back towards the events of the last few days.
MacConal's Response (DM JohnP) Monday July 16th, 2007 10:38:44 PM
MacConal listens to what Arm has to say, looking steadily back at Arm.
"What exactly were the circumstances of this 'job'? What did this person impersonating me want you to do? Did it have something to do with those goons that want to drive elves from the City?," MacConal asks.
When someone nods agreement, MacConal rocks back and moves to stand.
"You met this impostor in a public place, right? Where people saw me hire you? Did it have something to do with what happened to the Plateau City Defence League last night?"
Arm Tuesday July 17th, 2007 6:05:21 AM
Arm nods to both questions, "Aye it was in a public place...a pub called Samson's, don't know if you've heard of it or not. As far any anyone noticing you there...well, Samson's is a busy place and even if someone DID notice you, we probably didn't notice THEM to ask them anyway. The only person who may be able to help is Samson himself...he seems very sharp-eyed and may have remembered seeing you. Honestly, what we're suspecting is that it most certainly DID have todo with the PCDL's demise, as more dopplegangers who resembled us were seen attacking them. It's all very strange...". He then lets his voice lapse, hoping for some more information from Mac Conal.
Shadow Tuesday July 17th, 2007 11:05:52 AM
Shadow flinches and hopes no one noticed, as MacConal asks his questions. He stifles a groan as Arm tells the elf everything, although it is very general, but still almost everything that has happened. Shadow says, "Arm, maybe we better leave this sir to his own business and not trouble him anymore." With the suggestion Shadow tries to move the other two away and hopes MacConal does not raise his voice anymore because who knows could be watching him.
Edmund Tuesday July 17th, 2007 6:27:03 PM
Edmund looks about as if expecting sandwiches and tea to descend from heaven at any moment.
"This is boring!" he declares emphatically. "I want an apple!"
Kirsten Tuesday July 17th, 2007 9:02:32 PM
Growing weary of waiting for her companions, Kirsten wanders off back towards where they were staying. The paladin has a lot of thinking to do, and would rather do so in a peaceful, quiet place. Hopefully, she doesn't get lost on the way.
Thar ail Baerer Tuesday July 17th, 2007 10:48:09 PM

Walking back to the Hotel (DM JohnP) Tuesday July 17th, 2007 11:15:39 PM
Arm replies to MacConal's question. The elf nods before looking around at his companions.
"If it weren't for the attack that really happened, it sounds like you ... and I ... were being set up for the death of Fendrik Vedder. Your escape has probably made whoever planned this upset. As for me ... well ... I've probably got to stay clsoe to home until the Guard and Magistrates set this right."
"Maybe you can answer this? Who would benefit most from having someone posing as me, hire all of you to do something that seems to result in the death of the founder of the Plateau City Defence League?"
With that, MacConal turns back to his companions and all of them begin preparing to leave. Clearly, the interview or audience is over. With nothing better to do, and Edmund reminding everyone that he has missed his morning snack, it might be a good time to head back to the inn.
The trip back through Plateau City is quiet. The Mithril Order are effectively anonymous this far from Trade Quarter where they usually operate. The sharp-eared members of the party do manage to overhear some snippets of conversation about the events of the night before. In these Quarters, public opinion seems to be that the PCDL had whatever happened coming to them although many people decry the chaos and lawlessness that might result. So, here at least, the party probably has nothing to fear. From the people on the streets, anyway.
The inn is no different from when they left, the same quiet calm that often seems to be present in these high-end places. Nobody speaks much as they climb the stairs to the top floor where their suite is located. When they approach the top floor, Birdie seems agitated and growls quietly. When someone peers down the corridor, the Guards who had been in the hallway are no longer present and the door to the suite is open.
Arm d20+11=27 d20+4=22 Wednesday July 18th, 2007 6:05:07 AM
Arm answers the elf, "I honestly do not know....um.....thank you for your time and sorry to have bothered you.".
Once they begin heading back, he voices his reason for hesitating when he last spoke to Mac Conal, "I had a very disturbing thought back there when Mac asked his final question...who was it that always managed to show up AFTER the dirty work was completed? THE GUARD!! It may not be ALL of them, but I think SOMEONE or SEVERAL someones are behind all of this..they wanted to get rid of the PCDL and needed a scapegoat so they wouldn't be implicated in it. NOW, we're 'enjoying' their hospitality. I don't like this...don't like it at all..".
Once they return to the inn and notices Birdie's reaction as well as the open door, Arm groans silently and draws his sword, keeping an eye and ear open for trouble (listen=27, spot=24).
Kadaz (HP 75, AC 24, 26 vs evil) Wednesday July 18th, 2007 7:09:26 AM
Kadaz has been deep in thought, not a place he's familiar with, and has gotten lost. When he finally emerges he manages to hear the end of MacConal's question. "If the PCDL was a front for other elf haters how would their agenda be advanced by the death of Vedder with you and us to blame? Maybe the PCDL were no longer useful to their puppet master and they wanted to destroy our reputation and make others fear elves." Too much thinking, head hurt.
Back at the inn where the guards are missing and the door open Kadaz knows trouble has come calling. "Domni protect me" he whispers very softly, activating his protection from evil tattoo. Axe and shield ready, he moves towards the room.

He is brought out of his contemplation by the sudden movements of the group and Birdie's reaction (seems very similar to that of the presence of the dopplegangers). Shadow says softly (not whispering as that will carry), "Wait a minute and let me check for any traps that might be there and I will try and tell if anyone remains."

Two Guards Down (DM JohnP) Wednesday July 18th, 2007 11:14:23 PM
As the party walks through the streets of Hind Quarter and Dragon Quarter, they discuss the variosu possible combinations that the doppelgangers ... and whoever else might be involved ... are working. Nothing seems completely impossible but nothing seems certain, either.
Once they reach the suite and notice that things are amiss, they fall into their customary actions. Arm draws his weapons and waits for action while Kadaz and Conner approach the room. Shadow moves ahead to check for nasty surprises while the arcanists in the party prepare to provide support. Kirsten wonders if they're all too jumpy while Thar keeps watch so that nothing comes upon them from behind.
The fighters and Shadow see the crumpled forms of two Guards inside the suite. Both appear unconcious but that is based on looking across the suite towards the buffet table. No other threats are spotted inside the room, nor in the hallway outside.
Arm d20+4=19 d20+11=23 Thursday July 19th, 2007 5:59:25 AM
Seeing the fallen guards, Arm relays quietly back to the rest of the group, "Two guards down, but everything else seems ok. Birdie's on guard, so they may still be here.".
Feeling that he has given sufficient warning, Arm looks to Shadow to make sure it's ok to move in, then quietly moves into the room and to the left side of the door, ever watchful for trouble (spot=19, listen=23). As he does so, he wonders, "Could these dopplegangers take the form of objects as well as people?".
Kadaz (HP 75, AC 24, 26 vs evil) Thursday July 19th, 2007 7:34:19 AM
Kadaz waits for Shadow to check the entrance. As long as Birdie is uneasy so is he. "Let's rush the door" he suggests to Arm.
Shadow d20+7=20 d20+2=20 Thursday July 19th, 2007 9:43:53 AM
Shadow says, "It does not look like there are any nasty surprises, but we need to be careful." and he moves into the room behind Arm. He will move to the right and scan the room to see if there are any intruders present.

Edmund Thursday July 19th, 2007 12:19:41 PM
Listening to the interchange Edmund suddenly speaks.
"We shouldn't be here," he says. "In fact, we should go right now!"
"How will it look if the guard shows up here with us here, weaposn out, guards dead? We should be somewhere else when that discovery is made, or they may come to the wrong conclusion! Let's go! Let's go!"
Kirsten Thursday July 19th, 2007 7:35:35 PM
She speaks up calmly to Edmund's frantic cries of, 'flee now'.
"How will it look if we aren't here, and they discover two dead guards, where we are supposed to be."
The paladin frowns.
Searching the Room (DM JohnP) Friday July 20th, 2007 12:15:37 AM
Shadow, Arm and the others search the room while Thar checks the fallen guards. No obvious threats are found, so this wasn't a case of the doppelgangers planning an ambush.
Edmund suggests fleeing the suite but Kirsten restrains the mage. Even after Thar confirms that the two Guards are alive but very ill, there's the question of what to do.
DM Note - Sorry folks for not posting more. Late tonight, so I'll try to do more tomorrow night.
Mira Friday July 20th, 2007 12:50:37 AM
Bringing her fingertips to her temples, the sorcerer scans to room for things the others might not see (Detect Magic). She will report what she finds to her friends.
"Thar?" she asks the cleric, "any idea as to the cause of their illness?" Mira looks suspiciously at any remains of food on the table, attempting to discern if it was left overs from their breakfast the guards might have injested, or something altogether different.
Arm Friday July 20th, 2007 6:00:08 AM
Arm looks to Birdie and, hoping that he'll understand him, says, "Check them out, boy..see if they smell funny to you.".
Shadow d20+10=16 d20+2=3 d20+2=8 Friday July 20th, 2007 9:04:39 AM
Shadow asks, "Anyone know whether it was poison, magic, or just plain muscle that took those two out of commission?" He will not stand around, but keep checking the suite making sure over and over that there is nothing present to harm them.

Kadaz d20+1=15 Friday July 20th, 2007 4:56:47 PM
Kadaz looks over the room carefully, trying to see if there's anything new in the room. He then looks at Birdie, trying to determine what is upsetting the dog. (spot 15)
Conner d20+4=11 Friday July 20th, 2007 8:02:41 PM
Conner stays in the doorway, imposing his large frame in the narrow opening to ensure that should an invisible assailant try to leave they will have to brush by him. He scans the room for any signs of trouble [Spot=11]
Thar ail Baerer d20+9=28 Friday July 20th, 2007 9:58:36 PM
(Back on the street) Unsure of who their hidden foes could be, Thar asks "Are there any other groups that have been competing with the PCDL? If it was a competitor, we'd be a perfect "puppet" for them to use to take out a foe. Now that the PCDL is injured, who else will step up. Or, could it be a power struggle inside the PCDL and we helped someone else out? On the other hand, it could be the city guard involved."
(At apartment) Thar, responding to Mira's request, moves quickly to the guards and checks their condition. He carefully looks at their pupils and skin, and sees what he can detect from their condition, as well as maybe something they've ingested.

If needed, he'll use up some 0 level spells to stop their deterioration.

An Unsatisfactory End (DM JohnP) Saturday July 21st, 2007 11:32:57 PM
People mill about the room examining both the fallen bodies of the Guards, the food and pretty much everything else. Mira does not detect any lingering magics that could explain what happened or hide any lurking assassins.
A closer look reveals that the Guards had sampled some of the recently delivered food. When Thar bends down to examine them, he determined that the pair are suffering from some kind of ingested poison. They're clsoe to dying but his efforts are enough to slow their deterioration. It will take a healer more skilled than him to remove the poison.
The question of summoning aid is taken away from the party when Shadow hears someone coming up the stairs. He and Conner see a inn servant coming up the stairs. When the woman sees the party standing outside the room and the expression on Conner's face, she turns and quickly descends the stairs. Her hurried departure prompts the party to try to catch he, so Conner and someone else do. The chase isn't very long but she is stopped before reaching the bottom of the stairs.
"I was going for help! That's all! Get the Guards!"
Conner and Kadaz are bracing the woman against the wall when the Guard comes in from the street. The woman looks back and forth between the Guard and Conner, clearly trying to determine who is likely to be more sympathetic. She quickly determines that the Guard may give her more time to speak.
"Honest! I was going back to check the food!"
The Guard looks back and forth at the party members and the woman, then ushers them all upstairs. Once there, he sees his companions on the floor and moves to separate the woman from the party. Birdie has been waiting expectantly for Kadaz to return and moves quickly to greet her master. She displays no sign of agitation or excitement when the woman or Guard enter the room.
Another staff member from the inn arrives to see what all the commotion is about and the Guard sends him off to summon help. Then it's a period of waiting while Thar and Kirsten do what they can for the poisoned Guards.
Eventually, more Guards and Constables Rabbitsfoot and Gormley arrive. Birdie continues to sit quietly at Kadaz's feet while the people enter. Rabbitsfoot immediately takes charge while Gormley quietly organizes the Guards. Gormly then moves over to the fallen Guards, closely examining them including checking their mouths and breath. The tall, quiet Constable then examines the buffet table by sniffing and nibbling on various foods.
After quickly checking the stories of the party members, Rabbitsfoot interrogates the inn servant. The woman answers his questions and slowly begins to weep. Rabbitsfoot gestures to a Guard, quietly issues some orders and several Guards leave the room. Rabbitsfoot approaches the party. Gormley has finished his examination and comes to stand beside Rabbitsfoot, bending to whisper something in the halfling's ear.
"She says that she brought the food up before lunch and the Guards let her in. She didn't notice anything unusual here, but there was a new person in the kitchen. Gormley tells me that the poison is rare, nearly always fatal and next to impossible to detect when mixed with the spicy pickle dip it was in. We're just waiting to see about that kitchen helper."
The Guards return and the one that Rabbitsfoot spoke to is shaking his head.
"Well, that seals it. The doppelgangers seem to know where you are and they're trying to get rid of you. Perhaps there are no longer enough of them to challenge you directly so they tried this approach."
"Keeping you here isn't keeping you safe from them. But it is keeping you away from Trade Quarter. I'd guess one or two days before things quiet down over there, and we can get the true story out. Of course, letting news of the doppelgangers get out won't be good either. That's why we were trying to keep the story behind the house on Helm's Way quiet. But, it will probably have to come out now."
"How about you stay here another couple days? We'll put more Guards on and include some who can use spells to detect poison and shapeshifters. You can make escorted trips out to the shops, if you like, but I'd advise keeping close."
"If you want, Gormley and I have soem work that you can do for us that might solve this thing. What do you say?"
