Out of the Kettle and into the Fire

The Crimson Shields move up into the mountains following the directions provided by Angus heading towards the cave entrance that he saw while soaring into the sky. The trek is arduous as the terrain is tough and steep and the group has to stop and wait for the gasping Angus to catch up.

Nothing more dangerous than a raccoon is seen during the morning walk, as the group moves towards the cave. By midafternoon the group comes upon the valley Angus spotted and about 1/2 a mile away they can see the entrance. It is basically a 25' round hole carved halfway up the mountain. Some sort of climbing or flying will be necessary to get to it as the grade is to steep just to walk up. Figure you can easily free climb close to the entrance but will have about a 250' climb which things will be more difficult. (climbing rolls needed)No obvious plateau rests outside the hole.

The halfling cleric looks across at the tunnel opening. From the distance of a half mile, Belkior really can't make out too much. But he can still think and plan.

"I can cast Air Walk on someone to make it easy for them to get up there. Otherwise, climbing might be tough."

"Of course, Angus could simply Dimension Door three of us there with him. Unless, of course, it's protected against teleportation."

Belkior rubs his little chin for a moment, not really enjoying the prospect of being teleported again.

"I've got some rope, 50 feet, that I can lend. Or we can tie it all together to make the ascent."

Angus looks at the climb he may be asked to perform. "There is no way I am even attempting to climb that last bit. I will gladly dimension door two others up there with me. We also need to spell up before the attempt."

Angus looks at Bin and Belkior "I hope Domi and Alemi blessed you both with silence spells as the climb looks like a good place to use them. We may need to fortify ourselves against the dragon as I hear they can make the most powerful warriors run away in fear. Anything to help as I am worried about sorcerers too?"

Angus looks to Xenia and Syr "So how long do you think it will take to make that climb? We need to time this just right; for spells and the attack."

Before they rest, Bin tries on the armor of the fallen fighter, to test it. He will have several members test blows on it with him wearing it. Bin's not afraid of a few cuts and bruises and the minor ones are easy enough to heal. Bin will continue to wear his own afterwards though.

Bin will remove the lesser magic robe from the halfling and wear the more powerful robe from the mage.

That night, he will cast his Sending spell and send a message to his mentor and superior Sorreal.
"Greetings Sorreal. On test in name of Domi. Location StoneGap in Windbourne Hills. Ga'alian priests Heartseeding Dragon. In case we do not return, thank you.

During the day, Bin looks toward Angus as they walk, "You asked me a question a few days ago and I must apologize for not answering you. As you know, there is a lot to think about lately. My profession is herbalist. I picked it up while working the settlements outside Plateau City. It doesn't pay much really, but out here, I might find something rare and valuable, that we can use ourselves, since there are no stores nearby."

As they get closer to their destination. "I don't know what may happen to us, and I came as close to death as I ever have with that elemental Angus had the power to dispel. I think you all should know what magic I have, so if I fall, you can use it against our foes. I have no will, so take what Domi has gifted to me through success and divide it amongst yourselves. My armor is +3 dwarven plate, my Handy haversack, +1 Light Hammer, good for throwing too, +3 buckler, Plus I have a potion of Gaseous Form, a fly, three Lesser Restorations and two Pass without Trace."

"Got a couple scrolls here that let you climb like a spider." The dark rogue runs a mental check of her inventory. "But climbing like that is kinda slow, know what I mean? I think we're gonna have to jump in and hit 'em hard afore they know we're coming. It's like, every time we walk into sump'in and get hit first we get hit bad, you know?"

"Even the air walking - no offense, Belkie - it's, well, it's not Flying, if you know what I mean. Might be good for Syr, running as fast as he does. He could run right up there, just as fast as flying."

"Me, I got two more things to make you fly. One's a potion, the other's a scroll. I'll give 'em up for those who don't have."

Xenia turns an eye to the cave at the end of the valley.

"I wanna have a look first, though. Belkie, can you Airwalk me? (Yeah, I know what I said.) I'll zip down and take a look. See what we're jumping into and come right back."

The rogue rises up on tip toes and puts a kiss on Wynn's cheek. "If I could have that 'Nvisible spell, please?"

If the rest of the group is alright with this, Xenia will scout the cave. The Invisibility should give her an additional +20 to her Hide check. With Airwalk, she should be able to get up to the cave, Spot whatever might be there and return with the info.

I think it would really help to get an idea what's up there, the risks should be minimal, and it should only take one round play time to resolve.

If everyone's agreed, here would be the situation:

Spells: Airwalk 100 min, Invisibility 7 min, Magic Circle against Evil 50 min, Elixir of Sneaking 60 min

Bin will go along with whatever is dcided, it is just hard for him to see people go off without him to protect them.

I'm not finding where it says that Dragons have the Scent ability. I do find that Hide is not one of a Red Dragon's class skills. And their DEX is 10. So, by my thinking, Xenia would spot a dragon well before it could scent her.

No kidding. Dragons have changed for sure since the previous additions. Your right though, I found this. Blindsense is as close as it comes.

Blindsense (Ex)
Dragons can pinpoint creatures within a distance of 60 feet. Opponents the dragon can't actually see still have total concealment against the dragon.

Keen Senses (Ex)
A dragon sees four times as well as a human in shadowy illumination and twice as well in normal light. It also has darkvision out to 120 feet.

But, thankfully, that still means Sneak Attack will work from the shadows. Total Concealment would be all that is necessary.

The Crimson Shields plan their assault but Xenia wisely mentions that they need to scout out the area. She volunteers to go ahead after several spells are cast on her.

(ooc Not sure if you really want to go ahead but since I want to keep things moving forward, I will assume you get the spells requested and have you go.)

Xenia airwalks up towards the cave entrance and as she gets closer, she sees a strange sight. Out side of the cave their is a piece of bar stock sticking out of the rock. Hanging fron it is a triangle bell and a flat bar on a leather thong that could be used to ring it.

Xenia can't see far into the cave as the tunnel seems to curve away but she can tell that it is lighted by something. Xenia hasn't gotten any closer than 60' at this point.

The rest of the Crimson Shields wait for the hammer to fall but the entrance seems unguarded and ready for the group to enter.

OOC: We have been discussing, and Xenia should not scout with out a silence spell in effect. Al do you agree?

Angus waits for Xenia to receive all of her spells for the scouting mission and then casts on charge of stone skin on the rouge. "Be careful up there. This is for information only. We will spell up and prepare to assault the cave based on the information you bring back. See if you can grab the dinner bell up yonder (if you have silence on) on you way back down."

Angus proceeds to cast resist energy fire on himself and then casts stone skin on everyone, including sunshine. "That should toughen even me up." Angus comments to lighten the mood.

Angus looks to Bin and Belkior "Any prayers from Domi and Alemi for luck or stealth for our red headed friend?"

All the casting took one minute.

Sorry to rain on your parade but extend only allows you to increase the range of the spell. You would need a widen rod to do what you are looking for. George

Bin listens as they plan. He is completly out of his element out here. The farthest he has been from the city was when that damnable cult was trying to get that mummy lord to summon that sleeping god. That's where he met these guys. Bin wonders if Domi had all this planned the entire time.

Weirdo thing? Nah. The reason for the bell on a pole is plain as the dark nose on her face. It's a dragon calling bell. Xenia continues up toward the cave mouth, following the cliff wall up.

Dragon calling, it puts the dark rogue in mind of Alarms. Won't be nothing she can do if there's one out here. Not with the equipment she's got. The rogue makes a mental note to get one of them detecting magic wands. For now, though, if she can spot one, she know's it's been tripped and it's time for action.

At the cave mouth, she listens for movement, breathing, anything. She searches the Bell-on-a-Stick for possible traps, then she heads into the cave mouth. Sixty feet should be enough. Sixty feet, or till the curve flattens out so she can see a ways. That should be enough breathing space for the guys to get up here and make a stand.

Or ... there's the possibility that inside 60ft there'll be some Baddies. Could be. What would be a definite Go Back situation.

The bard shook his head when Xenia had offered the potion.

"You keep it. I have one more." With a finger under her chin, he had lifted her face to his and kissed her dark lips. "Walk softly and return safely," he had said.

Now, waiting with the others, he applies an oil to his adamantine blade until it shines with a Keen Edge. Then the bard grips the vial of the Fly potion in his free hand. He scans the skies and listens for any untoward sounds as he waits for the signal to ascend.

Sometimes he wish's that everyone would just attempt to surprise them, then he can go right to battle and avoid the butterflies that preceed all fights.

The others watch Xenia but she slips away into the shadows as she moves towards the opening of the cave and the triangle bell she saw from a distance. After some careful study, the shadowdancer comes to the conclusion that it is just a bell.

She moves towards the entrance and is suddenly wracked by pain as she crosses the threshold. (ooc Xenia please make a fortitude save DC 22. If you fail take 38 points of damage, if you save take 19 points of damage. Keeping you at the entrance for now.)

Belkior senses Xenia's pain through his status spell, though no one can see the shadowdancer, they know she might be in trouble.

OOC please everyone take 2 minutes off the spell durations. This will account for casting time and Xenia's trek up.

Salt taste of her own blood in her mouth. Xenia clamps down as the pain lances through her body. Were it not for the strength of her Magic Circle and the vitality of Belkie's Aid, the dark rogue knows she'd be hurting for sure.

Trap! Gotta be some kinda magic trap. Been tripped, no sense crying over what's been done. Time to move before it resets.

Xenia's eyes scan the cliff face and the tunnel up ahead. She listens for movement.

How to signal the guys? Could be there's someone around here watching right now. How to call 'em? Then the girl rogue remembers the Status spell. Just stand and they'll know to come. Just stand. The rogue freezes, making herself even more difficult to pick out against the shadows.

Angus looks to Belkior and Bin "Time to finish casting. I could us more fire protection (protection from fire) and so could the rest of us. Ahh, that feels good Belkior."

Angus waits until Bin and Belkior have cast a few spells and then adds a few of his own.

Angus casts protection from evil on himself, followed by summon monster V (3 lantern archons) and finally polymorph.

"What is taking Xenia so long to report? We need information. If we do not hear from her soon three of us are poping up right now. Anyone that needs to better start climbing or flying."

The archons cast aid on Angus, Lang and Sunshine to start.

Guys, I am getting confused on who has what spells on them. I need to see it on every character tonight. If you have already posted today, then repost with just the spell list. Spellusers, if you have cast on other characters, list them as well.

I want spells and durations guys. It will be up to you to keep these lists updated nightly. We will soon be in combat rounds and it become much more important. If the spell and its duration isn't listed, you don't have it. No crying to me later. Thanks George

OCC OK after this last set of posting we are entering combat rounds. Everyone mark off another minute from current spell lists since Bin's actions would have taken at least that long.

Xenia notices the pain fade and she gets a better chance to look around. She is still hiding in the shadows at the entrance of the cave. The pain fades but the wounds linger as she looks around. The tunnel is lit but an occassional glowing rock. Xenia is confidant she can find plenty of shadows to hide in. She sees a stone piller standing in the tunnel around 60' away. Looks to be about 2' wide and 4' tall. She patiently waits for the others and sees Wynn and some summoned creatures archons moving towards her.

Wynn gulps down a potion and starts flying up the hill towards Xenia concerned written on his face. Wynn flies into the cave mouth looking for his lady love and he to is wracked in pain. (fort save of 22 or take 34 points of damage. 17 if you make save)

The archon's make it to the top and hover around waiting. (ooc Jim please post some actions you want them to do before they disappear)

The others wait for word or some kind of signal. Bin chats to Lang wondering if he wants to bring his dog into such an obviously dangerous situation.

George, I am confused with how you worked the time. Could you please explain it to me so that I may understand?
Each spell I cast took six seconds as a standard action equaling 1 minute. Then he drank a fly potion. How could that take longer then the two minutes you had us take of previously?
Not only that, the last two things I did was on myself, so they could have started up without me, so if you are going to penalize someones time, it should be mine alone, I would think?

Buzz I don't think I am penalizing anyone. Just trying to get everyone on the same time frame. Losing a minute isn't that big of a deal right now. We aren't in combat and the spells cast currently are pretty long. I am giving Jim a chance to do something with his summoned creatures so I am not worried about it. George

When Belkior attempts to cast pro fire on him, Angus stops him "Belkior got me already. Get the other or save one."

Angus will wave to the Archon's and see if they see Xenia.

Wynn arcs in pain, and it stabs at Xenia's heart to see that she was wrong and that whatever trap she's fallen into seems to affect everyone.

Well, we'll just try and see that that weirdo thing is up ahead before we actually move ahead in there, the rogue thinks to herself. Still within the shadows, Xenia, from her haversack, produces a small gray bag. She reaches inside, and pulls out a tiny ball of fluff. When she throws this into the air, it becomes a bat.

"Seek," she commands, and her voice comes out of the darkness. The bat flies down the tunnel in search of a living creature.

Sorry Batty Guy. The girl rogue consoles herself with the thought that the bat is just Magic. It's not like it's a real live critter that she's just sent down the tunnel to be zapped.

She herself maintains the watch, keeping her eye peeled for danger. There's a ringing in her ears, though. Maybe something left over from that invisible blast.

Bin has never flew before and his stomach drops as he climbs upwards. Vertigo is brief has Domi's hand calms his nerves. Just don't look down. He flies up, but does not enter until he is given the order to do so. When Bin gets toward the entrance he will cast his Divine Power spell on himself.

One of the archons swoop towards Wynn to place an aid spell and pops into non existance. Whatever is hitting Wynn and Xenia also effected it and sent it home. The rest start giving out aids spells until they disappear.

Syr, Angus, Lang, Sunshine, Bin and Bekior get renewed aids spells.

Angus casts a dimension door but finds himself standing on the ground holding onto Lang and Sunshine. His spell fails.

When Bin gets to the mouth of the cave, he uses his domain spell and casts divine power.

Xenia brings a bat forth from her bag of tricks and sends it winging down the tunnel. The bat flies down the tunnel without any ill effects.

Wynn sucks down a potion of healing.

Everyone else for simplicity is floating at the mouth of the cave. (It would in reality take six combat rounds using double moves which I am keeping track of. Figured it would be easier doing this way then wasting a week of real time.)

Current situation, Both Wynn and Xenia are a few feet in the cave. (you can do some extra actions if you wish since the others took a 6 rounds to get there. Trying to get you all on the same time line.

Belkior, Bin, Syr, are all floating before the cave entrance

Angus, Lang and Sunshine are all on the ground still will a couple of combat rounds.

We are now in firm combat rounds. No more than one action per round except for the people I mentioned. This post only can they do more than one.

Angus sees Wynn at the cave mouth and flies up 50 feet (to get in range for message) and points at the bard. "Quick, what does the cave look like. I have to dimension door farther in, or at least attempt to avoid what is blocking my spell."

"Beware, Angus. There is a painful ward here in the entrance. It must have hit Xenia, and then it hit me too so I don't think it's a common trap." Wynn then whispers a quick description of the area between the cave mouth and the strange stone pillar.

Would that he could see Xenia, but the bard understand the need for stealth. He takes a wand from his haversack and begins to heal his remaining wounds, to be at full health for the challenge to come. Between each application of the healing wand, he pauses to listen and scan the surroundings for danger, before, at last, putting the wand away.

Batty Guy flies off, hale and healthy, Seeking anything alive. He'll return after he spots something alive. Leastwise, that's that it said in the manual on this Gray Bag Thing. Xenia starts off a count in her head of how many seconds he's gone for.

From what happened to Wynn, looks to be that whatever hit her maybe controls this space. And whatever it is, it's not hitting her now. Probs that means, if she leaves this area then it's gonna hit her again when she comes back. If she goes further in ... she'll be trapped.

The rogue weighs the idea for just a split sorta second. Then she moves forward.

Keeping the count with part of her mind, she creeps on the big stone wee-wee sticking up in the middle of the floor. That's her job. To make sure the way is safe. The guys are counting on her. No matter how painful it gets. The rogue is all eyes, watching careful for danger. She searches the stone pillar for traps or other secrets when she gets to be 10ft from it.

OOC This timeline thing is getting out of control. After this post, everyone will be on the same timeline. The three who were behind and could do meaningful action (Sorry Lang) have posted. Please feel free to post again after this post along with everyone else and we will be caught up.

Angus receives his instructions and concentrates yet again summoning his magic with confidence. Lang closes his eyes and waits for the jerking movement that will whisk him, Sunshine and Angus away and keeps waiting. Finally he cracks an eyelid and sees a pissed of Angus stomping his foot and all three of them at the same location.

Wynn after calling out what he sees, starts healing himself. Using his wand he gets himself back to full strength. (please mark off 3 charges)

Xenia crepts 10' forward and is startled by a face or more accurately a giant mouth appearing on the wall next to her. It says in a very loud voice in common, "Master! You have intruders at the door. It is very rude to enter without ringing the bell!"

Xenia keeps counting but her little friend never returns.

The dark rogue freezes, eyes cat wide as the voice comes from the wall of the cave. She turns to eye the mouthy mouth with a great deal of suspicion.

The group is still split up since Lang and Sunshine aren't able to scale the wall. Angus calls for a general retreat to rethink but assets have been used and they will be wasted if the group doesn't press on.

Xenia is so frustrated she is literally talking to the walls. Of course they might answer back.

Lang thinks Angus is a liar or some kind of trickster but wonders if he is even really a sorceror. He has seen him dimension door before, what is the problem now?

Will the group press on or will they retreat to rethink? What other nasty tricks will the adversaries think up while the group is thinking.

The halfling cleric awakens from his reverie, after seeing what has happened to his companions. Belkior has seen the problems that his companions have had with entering the tunnel. Maybe he should make it difficult for the dragon to get out ...

Belkior recites the prayer that will create a stone wall. Except, instead of a simple wall, Belkior decides to get fancy. He concentrates and a large stone X forms in the tunnel entrance with a central disk. The overall effect is to block the tunnel entrance so that only a medium or smaller creature can move through easily. A large creature would have to squeeze and it would be impassable for huge or bigger creatures.

Xenia, come back. The bard mentally kicks himself for not having put his own Message spell upon her. He strains to pick her out of the smattering of shadows within the tunnel, but either she is much too skilled for his senses, or she isn't there at all. (Spot 25, Listen 24)

"I thought I heard a voice." Wynn looks down at Angus flying down below in range of the Message spell. "It came from inside the tunnel and said, 'Master! You have intruders at the door. It is very rude to enter without ringing the bell!'" Even over the Message spell, the bard's voice is a near perfect match for the voice in the tunnel. (Perform 31)

Belkior casts his wall of stone making an X across the entrance in hopes of slowing a charging dragon down enough so they could escape while it batters it way trough,

Bin decides to have a cool treat on this hot day while his companions scout out the danger.

Wynn frets over his lovers daring and tries to warn the others that trouble might soon be coming.

Lang prepares a bow ready to add some fire power for when something appears. Lang sniffs the air and smells something fruity coming from above. He takes a deep sniff wondering what that fruity smell is.

Angus strangly quiet hovers in the air in his favorite pixie form.

Xenia starts creeping forward and after another 20' startles when another mouth appears. "You have entered an occupied series of caves. Leave now or meet your deaths!"
Xenia then takes a good look at the piller and a rune upon it. The rune starts to glow and Xenia feels almost a kick to her stomach. Xenia needs to make a Will save DC 24 or die. She has activated a Symbol of Death.

Bin has been flying at the entrance the entire time with True Seeing. he didn't see anything on there? The pillar is in plain sight of him.

I quote from the spell Until it is triggered, the symbol of death is inactive (though visible and legible at a distance of 60 feet). To be effective, a symbol of death must always be placed in plain sight and in a prominent location. Covering or hiding the rune renders the symbol of death ineffective, unless a creature removes the covering, in which case the symbol of death works normally.

Xenia hears her own sharp intake of breath as the power reaches, lightning fast, and wraps dark tentacles about her life. The pain of regret fills the torn hole of her life as she's ripped away. Faces shrink away as she's pulled into the darkness, Wynn, her adopted father Marcus, her adopted mother Sliver ... NO! Xenia pulls back. With heroic effort of will she rips away from the dark force, fleeing back to her body. All the senses of her body come flooding back to her in a rush, the acrid scent of fear, the pounding of her heart, and the frightened panting of a young girl's breath.

The glyph, glowing on the post. Why hadn't she seen it before? She whirls to see if Wynn is alright. He and the others float outside the cave mouth, from the looks of things, unharmed.

"DON'T COME IN!" Her voice rings out from the darkness. It's glowing now, but no telling how long the thing would remain active, and no telling whether it would reset or not. But now it's active. And it can't hurt her anymore. Here's the chance to wipe it away. Xenia takes out her Acid wand. The aim is simple. She covers the stone under the Symbol in acid that melts the rock. The dark rogue becomes visible after the attack. With her eyes and ears she probes the tunnel up ahead, ready to turn and run at the first sign that the Master Guy is on his way.

The Crimson Shields hover as Xenia does her solo exploring into the dragon's lair. She has survived the traps so far and is now disarming them. She shoots her acid wand into the rune damaging it but it still glows an evil red. (ooc figure it will take around 10 points of damage to disfigure it enough Al)

Time is ticking...who knows what other mischief the cleric and dragon are cooking up.

OOC OK I played this wrong. In my mind, the tunnel curved more and the pillar wasn't visable from the entrance until you moved in. I am gonna keep playing it this way or Wynn is gonna need to make a saving throw. Gotta look at those Nellie maps more closely.

It takes the rogue four more shots before the glow goes out of the Symbol on the pillar. After that, you gotta figure it's safe. Or, at least, as safe as it's gonna get.

Xenia leans out for a look at Wynn and the rest, floating just outside of the tunnel. She quells the longing to call out to them, throw a stone, anything. But she's going into danger. And Belkie's got the Status thing on her anyway. Still invisible, she dives back into shadow and proceeds forward.

OoC: So as not to slow this down for anyone else, I've made the Acid Splash shots to clear the Symbol of Death and I've sent Xenia further down the tunnel. She will proceed until she encounters another danger or until she sees anything of significance. DM's discretion.
