DM Kathy Friday August 10th, 2007 2:42:32 AM
Mounted on your various steeds, you set out on the journey to Rowena. You encounter few travelers on the road, but you can see many people at work in the fields, bringing the harvest in.
You have come about an hour from Jarlwolf when a mounted figure appears in the road about 60 feet ahead of you. Harvest and Arminas recognize Itzal's riding horse. All of you recognize Itzal.
"You!" cries Itzal. "You ruined my party! Well, see how you like this!"
A word, a gesture, and suddenly four shapes fill the road ahead of you. Three of them are roughly halfling-sized creatures made of rock and dirt. Their arms and legs are crude chunks of stone, and their heads are featureless. The fourth creature has a body as long as a man is tall, with four tentacles a little longer than human forearms. The tentacles, located on its head along either side of its jaws, are segmented, as is the body itself.
Anybody who makes a DC 25 Spot check Highlight to display spoiler: {A faint, human-sized shimmer appeared beside the road just as Itzal was beginning to cast his spell. }
Anybody who makes a DC 20 Listen check Highlight to display spoiler: {As Itzal began casting his spell, you faintly heard another voice, which also seemed to be casting. }
Having placed his obstacles in your path, Itzal laughs, wheels his horse, and begins riding away.
The creatures advance toward you.....
Arminas - Sub/Al (AC22, HP 46/46) d20+17=20 d20+10=20 Friday August 10th, 2007 9:58:22 AM
"Itzal's evil ally is here abouts!" Arminas shouts the warning as the ranger's sensitive ears pick up the sound of an additional voice. (Spot 20, Listen 20)
Arminas begins a spell, but the thought that it will be the boy's horse that suffers the consequence makes him pause. Instead, the elfish ranger switches to a different spell.
"Friend Horse!" His voice in a high whiny, Arminas calls out to Itzal's horse. "Do not leave, Friend Horse! We have a chance to rid Itzal once and for all of the Water-Friend, but you must not leave! Please, help us!"
"Ewan, follow the boy and his horse, but at a distance. We must know where they go. But beware. There may be a dangerous creature around that you will not be able to see. If it attacks you, then you must run. Go. Go, Ewan."
As his companion eagle launches into the air, Arminas and Darkfire fade toward the back of the group. The elf readies his bow.
Harvest (AC19, HP 48/48) d20+14=18 d20+14=20 Friday August 10th, 2007 11:03:09 AM
"I hear the voice as well, Arminas Calaelen," replies Harvest Moon. Her hands come together, forming the symbol of Alemi, and from his grace comes Protection from Evil. (Spot 18, Listen 20)
"I will distract them so that you might ready yourselves."
Harvest dismounts.
"Please withdraw, Fyrda. I would not wish you to come to harm." Drawing her spiked chain, Harvest moves fifteen feet in front of the group. She measures the space between herself and the collection of summoned creatures at a comfortable 45 feet of distance.

Desolute does not have a mount, nor does he really need one as long as the group does not ride at full pace. The half orc sees Itzal and springs into action. He starts running full out toward the horse. He will attempt to tumble past the summoned monsters, knowing it may well cost him his life, but no one attacks Desolute and lives to tell about it, or at least that was the old him, lets see what the new him will do if he gets his hand on the snot nosed punk. Wait, what was that sound, it wasn't Itzal. "IT's not Itzal!!!" Desolute changes his course and heads in the direction he heard the voice. Ooc: I assume they are side by side and not in a row. Florin frowns at what has currently happened and trusting Ajax fully, not to mention stopping him once seeing Itzal. Florin pulls Glimmer, the high Woldian runes spelling it's name glowing in the air and at the command word spoken the shocking crackling along the blade too. Florin hears his friends and whispers under his breath, "Domi, guide my hand if the young wizard is turned to fight against us. I trust in your judgement."

DM Kathy Sunday August 12th, 2007 11:21:59 PM Arminas calls out to Itzal's horse to stay where he is. He does seem to hesitate. But Itzal saws on the reins and kicks the horse's flanks and it takes off. Obediently, Ewan flies after.
Harvest casts a spell and dismounts. [Casting is a standard action and dismounting is move-equivalent unless you succeed at a DC 20 Ride check to fast-dismount.]
Bralin shoots some Magic Missiles toward the shimmer he sees. He senses that they hit...something, although he's not sure what kind of effect they have.
Desolute begins running toward Itzal, but is sidetracked toward the mysterious shimmer. He gets near the spot in time to see the Magic Missiles hit. [OOC: when you tumble, you move at half speed. You cannot run and tumble both.]
Davros attempts to dispel the casting, but cannot quite overcome the summoning magicks.
Florin draws and activates his sword.
Meanwhile, Itzal continues to flee on horseback, Ewan flying overhead. The shimmer--whatever it is--vanishes.
The creatures move forward. They are now about 20 feet from you.
Desolute Monday August 13th, 2007 12:52:14 AM
DM Kathy, could we possibly have distances please? How far away is Itzal at this point from Desolute and the group? How far away is Desolute from the monsters he (Itzal) summoned tumbling at 20? Thank you.

Desolute (AC:18 HP: 29) Monday August 13th, 2007 2:57:28 PM
Desolute growls under his breath at the situation. His choice is to chase a horse on foot or help destroy these creatures. [To all: I'm sorry I didn't have a combat map ready for yesterday. There was a big game convention last weekend and I was exhausted. I'm sending one out today.]
[Lorth, do start posting right away. We're glad you're back. :) ]
[Anyone who missed an action last round can post two rounds worth of actions this time.]
Bralin pulls out a sphere and attempts to overawe the rock creatures through sheer force of personality. It does not seem to have any effect.
Harvest tumbles past the startled creatures and pelts down the road after Itzal's departing form. She is now 200 feet behind the galloping horse.
Ewan shrieks once in response to Arminas's command, and continues flying after Itzal. The ranger puts his mind to it, but cannot place the tentacled creature. Such a thing is clearly unnatural, however, so it is not too surprising that he is unfamiliar with it. He fires several shots at the creature, two of which hit. Only the flames, however, seem to do any damage; the arrows themselves seem to have no effect.
Desolute draws his weapons and moves in to attack.
Maglant summons up a ghostly sword, which swings at the tentacled creature. The aberration slithers nimbly aside, and the sword does not hit it.
Davros also searches his memory for information on creatures like these, but comes up empty. He launches a fireball, aiming for two of the rock creatures and the tentacled creature. The third rock creature is too close to Desolute to make a comfortable target. The fireball ignites. One of the rock creatures seems to dodge part of it, while the other rock creature and the thing with the tentacles take the full brunt. When the smoke clear, the tentacled creature lies dead.
Itzal pulls up his horse and pauses for a moment. Then he and his horse disappear. To Harvest, watching from a distance, they seemed to just wink out.
The first rock creature, meanwhile, moves forward to where Florin sits atop Ajax. One rocky fist slams at the paladin, striking his armor with a resounding CLANGGG!. Florin is unhurt, however.
The second rock creature moves up to Maglant and attacks him. The blow barely slips through the taur's defenses, striking him for 13 points of damage.
The third rock creature is already face-to-face with Desolute so does not have to move. It aims a powerful blow at the half-orc, but is not quite able to connect.
Florin Jadenth-AC:20-HP:73 (No Shield currently) Tuesday August 14th, 2007 12:11:16 AM
Florin has always fought best side by side with Ajax so takes the moment to dismount and maybe grab his shield on the way. When he touches the ground he reaches up and gives the vizor part of his helmet a small hit to slap it shut.
Arminas d20+15=19 Tuesday August 14th, 2007 12:30:07 AM
Glad that the unnatural creature is dead, he makes a mental note that flame causes damage while arrows don't. The rocks seem to have enough to keep them busy. Looking up, he sees and hears Ewan as she screams in answer to the whereabouts of Itzal. Suddenly though, he vanishes.
"I'm going to help Harvest."
Arminas speaks to Darkfire with a whiney:
All speed to Harvest, go around these creatures off the side off the road.
When he gets there, he looks to the place where Itzal dissappeared, and looks for tracks on the road. He wants to know if he is gone, or merely invisible.
With a second thought, he yells out to Itzal's horse in the language of horses:
Where are you my friend (insert horse's name)?

Bralin (ac24, 76/76 hp) Tuesday August 14th, 2007 9:45:38 AM
Bralin's face twists in disgust. Tis only the second time he has attempted to use The Chamber's power, and again it has proven ineffective.
The dwarf dismounts Mica, and drops The Sphere on the ground next to his wand. Tis time for direct methods.
Bralin advances on the creature attacking Desolute, pulling out his war hammer as he moves.

"The boy has escaped!" Harvest Moon calls back to her embattled companions. There are several magics that might explain the sudden disappearance of both boy and horse at the same time. Some of these involve sudden magical movement. It is a thing that she herself might do someday, given the grace of Alemi. Another magic involves a sphere of invisibility.
Harvest listens up above to Ewan. The rest appear to be controlling the small stone creatures quite handily. Best to ensure that the boy does not escape if at all possible.
Harvest rushes across the ground, clearing the 200 feet between herself and the place from which boy and horse had disappeared in a single burst. Once there, she listens and looks. Surely a horse would make sound enough to reveal the continuing presence of the pair.

The stone creature hits malgant like a mule kick and he is a bit taken aback that it could penetrate his defenses. As Arminas rides past on his way to Harvest's side Malgant calls a warning to the ranger, knowing how much he cherishes the bird Ewan, " Be careful for Ewan, Arminas. The boy is a mage and likely has use of the unerring missiles mages favor." Looking now to his own predicament Malgant mentally commands the sword to his side where it strikes at the stone creature. DM Kathy Wednesday August 15th, 2007 2:33:08 AM Arminas moves up toward the spot where Itzal disappeared. He has to maneuver Darkfire around the rock creatures, so he cannot run. He does not quite reach the spot this round. He shouts for Itzal's horse, but receives no reply.
Harvest is not so hampered, and does reach the spot this round. She looks and listens, but detects no sign of boy or horse.
Lorth steps back to summon Tobiasz, and Bralin dismounts, moving forward to confront one of the creatures.
Desolute attacks twice and hits once. It is a solid blow, but not a critical one.
Maglant takes a moment to redirect his ghostly sword to the rock creature. The sword hits, followed by Maglant's more substantial sword. The creature falls under the combined attacks.
Davros fires a Magic Missile at the first rock creature, already badly wounded by the fireball. The missile doesn't do much damage, but it is enough. This creature, too, falls.
Florin would like to finish off the creature in front of him, but Davros has beaten him to it. Instead, the paladin spurs his mount forward to attack the creature closest to Bralin and Desolute. After a few well-placed blows from Florin's longsword, that creature too falls.
Tobiasz pops into the road and nuzzles Lorth affectionately. There is no other movement at the site of the battle.
A moment later, when Arminas reaches the spot where Itzal disappeared, he finds no tracks leading away. The hoofprints simply stop.
Lorth d20+1=11 Wednesday August 15th, 2007 7:59:07 AM
Lorth mounts Tobiasz and readies his lance, best to be prepared if the battle starts up again. He then advances with Tobiasz to where Harvest is looking for Itzal. As he moves he keeps his eyes peeled for anyone not accounted for in the area. (Spot 11)
Arminas Wednesday August 15th, 2007 9:41:08 AM
Arminas circles around the area where Itzal and his horse were last seen. A frown comes over his face, and he dismounts. Once again, he searches the area.
"They are gone, not invisible. I have not studied those magics, but it seems the spell is much more powerful than a lad fresh out of school would normally be able to cast."
Looking back at where the rock creatures have been dispatched, he adds:
"Harvest, do you think he made an attempt at our lives or was merely trying to be a nuisance? If it was an attempt, it was a poor one. Yet perhaps next time, he must have learned something from the encounter."
Malgant warned Arminas of the possibility that Itzal may attack Ewan.
"I think if he were to kill Ewan I could not stop myself. He would die."
Bralin Wednesday August 15th, 2007 10:35:42 AM
The combat is over before it even begins. Bralin mentally shrugs. He stows his war hammer and returns to Mica to retreive the wand and Sphere that he had dropped on the ground.
He mounts the warhorse.
"The boy overestimates his own power," he offers. "He left 'ere the fight, and mayhap believes us dead. I would continue to Rowena. Learn what we may, report to Dulcet, and then deal with the boy. He will be at his home, after all."
Harvest Wednesday August 15th, 2007 11:02:27 AM
"Teleportation." Harvest Moon frowns and scans the countryside. "Itzal Jerse may still be in the vicinity," she says. "But there is no telling where."
With caution, she returns to the place at which they had been attacked to calm the gentle heart of loyal Fyrda.
"Paladin Lorth," the brown girl says later, as they again take up the road to Rowena, "until such time as I learn more of the Law, I will defer to your judgment in such matters, to yours and to that of Paladin Florin. Itzal Jerse has now attacked us. He has used such powers that should we have been more common people, we would likely have been slain or gravely injured."
"May we now consider Itzal Jerse to be an outlaw? And to what degree may we impinge upon he and his family in the pursuit of justice and public safety?"

Florin Jadenth Wednesday August 15th, 2007 11:44:11 PM
Florin frowns at how quickly the battle is over and wonders why something that seemed so powerful summoned so weak creatures. He shrugs this off and simply thanks Domi for his grace and watchful eye in the battle.
Hearing Harvest, Florin looks first to Lorth and then back to her, sheathing his sword and popping the vizor part of his helmet up, "It is a hard thing to say which way to go on I think Harvest. You see, having fought summoned monsters before, they tend to vanish after you kill them. This leaves I hate to admit it but little proof of anything. We could speak against him true but without proof and since the Jerse's are atleast low ranking nobles, it could be brushed aside. For now I fear we can do little but check the school and just keep our guard up till we have tangible proof. Unfortunetly the law in some ways works to aid the criminal as much as harm them."
Florin looks to Lorth again, wondering if his comments might be seen from a different point of view by his friend or the others of the group as that goes, "We should continue on when everyone else is."
DM Kathy Thursday August 16th, 2007 1:54:06 AM
The battle over, most of the Swords congregate at the place where Itzal disappeared. Davros gives it some thought, and based on the description of the others, he believes the spell may have been a Dimension Door. It is not as powerful as a Teleport, but a wizard who knew the surrounding area could easily use it to escape.
Desolute still has too much pent-up energy to join the group, and spends some time running ahead. Having little else to go on, the group continues on its way to Rowena.
The rest of the day is uneventful, and that evening you stay at a small wayside inn. The common room is crowded with local farm folk, glad after a long day of harvesting to eat a meal they didn't have to cook. They are all local, however, so there are plenty of rooms available. The food is simple but hearty, the ale quite good. Your sleep is undisturbed.
Desolute Thursday August 16th, 2007 2:29:48 PM The fires rage in the back ground as the thatched huts catch and burn. The screams of the women's lamentations at the abuse of their dominators are mingled with the cry's of the children as the other orcs play Nubjak with them. They shove spears into the ground with the heads sticking upward, each is worth a certain amount of points. The orcs stand back 20 paces and throw the screaming children toward the spears to impale the innocent. The winner is allowed first choice of loot. The villages hunting party is seen coming back to the devastation of their homes and family. They futilely engage the orc barbarians. The sadness and fear both etched upon their dying faces. The only way Desolute can handle it is to turn off all emotions. He must rage...... In the inn, Desolute is heard with a loud war cry. He comes straight up out of his bed in a cold sweat. Without thinking, he grabs his weapons and stares around the room for signs of trouble. His eyes, blood shot and bulging, just like the veins in his forhead and neck. His arms, although not large are like stone cords running their length to his solid grip on his hilts. The present catches him in the chest as he begins to calm down from his slumber. His dry heaves scream at him as he crawls toward a corner of the room and viably shakes as he comes out of his pseudo-rage. Hands trembling, he puts his weapons away and sobs slightly, waving away anyone that wishes to approach.
Arminas Thursday August 16th, 2007 3:42:52 PM
Arminas is brought out of his trance with a start, as the half-orc who has joined them grabs his weapons. It appears he has had a bad dream, but that is enough for Arminas. Picking up his gear, he heads for the door.
"I think I'll go check on Ewan."
With that (and a slight shudder) he heads out the door.

Lorth Thursday August 16th, 2007 7:54:40 PM
Lorth mulls his thoughts then speaks when they arrive at the inn, "Harvest, Itzal has attacked us with no provocation, in my eyes he is an outlaw and should dealt with as such. Preferably we should bring him to the town elders for judgment, however if he dies in the attempt, since I doubt he will come peacefully, so be it. I will pray for his soul.", Lorth says matter of factly. Lorth gets himself a room and offers to share it with any of his companions. He eats a hearty dinner then retires early to bed.
Davros Thursday August 16th, 2007 8:00:40 PM
Davros sips at some wine before weighing in on a thorny issue. "We should find all the evidence we can before confronting Itzal directly. Maybe we should avoid confronting him at all if we can help it. No matter how good the evidence may be, It could cast very poor light on us. Let us go to the school and see what we can learn."
Malgant AC 20 HP 38/44 d8+5=10 Thursday August 16th, 2007 8:32:10 PM
Malgant listens to both Lorth and Florin, and sees wisdom in both of their views. Then speaks his own. " True he has attacked us unprovoked Lorth, and as such he is now an outlaw, at least to us. However Florin's point that the summoned creastures will, have, disappeared when defeated leaves us naught to prove his guilt. A time will come when we eventually face him and his companion and as you say I think he will not back down. At that time we will see whether he can be brought to justice or if he will choose to perish on our blades. If Gargul will grant it to you, as Domi grants it to me, I would pray for a spell to clear Itzal's mind. If indeed this creature holds sway over him the simple protection spell may allow the boy to think clearly and save his life. I will ask Domi to grant me that power each day that we expect to face Itzal. In doing so I may be able to protect him from the creature he calls friend."
The Inn is very homey and quite crowded. After the days exertion Malgant has a hearty dinner and samples quite a bit of the wine the inn has to offer. Bedding down for the night he sleeps the sleep of the dead, At least until the shriek of rage brings him rolling to his feet, sword in hand. At first he believes Desolute has seen or been attacked by an enemy, and he tries to position himself back to back with the half-orc. It quickly becomes apparent they are alone, and the demons that the man fights are in his mind. Malgant looks back at Desolute, afraid now that the man cannot see them as they really are, but can only see the demons from his dreams. He calls softly, calmly." Desolute? Are you well? What is it you see? Are we in danger?" Despite the half-orcs gestures to ward him off, he follows Desolute to the corner, still talking calmly. He doesn"t know what has provoked this reaction, but he knows he has seen similar reactions in those that have fought desperate fights and lived. Knows he has awoken that way himself on occasion. Desolute continues to warn him off, so he stops a few feet away. He could still touch the man, even from here, but that would be dangerous. Instead he uses his voice. " I have done things, or not done things we wish we could change. I have seen things I can never hope to unsee. If you want to talk, either as man to priest, warrior to warrior, or brother to brother, seek me out. You don't need to be alone." Malgant turns and returns to his bed. As he lies down he says a small prayer to Domi, healing his remaining wounds from the earlier battle. It is a long road ahead tomorrow and he needs his sleep. It is a long time before sleep finds him again.

Bralin Thursday August 16th, 2007 8:41:03 PM
Bralin has already had his say on the boy. He sleeps soundly at the inn, until the half-orc's dream wakes him. The dwarf watches Malgant approach and get waved off. He makes no attempt to approach on his own - there is really no point.
The warrior regards Desolute wordlessly, staring at him for several long minutes. He nods his own agreement to Malgant's offer, and then goes back to sleep.
In the morning, Bralin asks the innkeeper for directions to the school of magic.
Harvest Thursday August 16th, 2007 9:08:03 PM
The evening had been filled with thoughts of the words from the two paladins. Many thoughts, but no conclusions.
Many times during the night, Harvest Moon had rolled to rest her hand upon the place where Anthos' chest would rise and fall with comforting regularity. Her eyes would come open, as though surprised to find nothing there. The sheets of this in had been soft and the bed warm, but they were no substitute.
And so it was that she had leapt from the bed without a moments hesitation at the cries of rage and anguish.
"I have a beast that lives within me," she said, from the space of floor next to the half-orc. Her arms were wrapped about her knees, and her nightdress tented over her. "Sometimes it comes out. Those times are difficult." She reaches out to touch Desolute's hand with hers. Then she stands. "As rough and difficult as the beast may be, though, it is still me."
"Good night," she had said, "Noble Desolute." Then she had returned to her room.
Now, in the morning, prayers seem so much more ethereal. She is set apart from the Wold, as though there is no one else save herself and Alemi.
DM Kathy Friday August 17th, 2007 2:03:52 AM
A peaceful evening and a pleasant night get a little more exciting when Desolute begins raging in the throes of a nightmare. His companions are with him, however, and the damage is minimal.
The next morning, the innkeeper and his family eye you all askance after the night's disturbance. Indeed, only the inkeeper himself comes close enough to serve you breakfast; he keeps his family well away from the unpredictable adventurers.
Queried about the specific location of the magic school, the innkeeper only shrugs. He can give you directions to Rowena, which is still some three or four days' journey from here, but the exact geography of the famed city is unknown to him.
You retrieve your mounts and get underway. A wind has kicked up, which blows the morning fog away but makes for uncomfortable traveling. Cloaks and hair flap about in the wind, and dry leaves skitter past the horses' hooves. And the clouds rolling in with the wind hint of wet traveling weather ahead.
There is a little inn that night, too--a welcome shelter from the wind and the rain that is just beginning to fall. Rain patters on the inn roof all night, letting up a few hours before dawn.
Your third day on the road is marked by showers. There are breaks in between--just long enough that you begin to dry out--and then the rain starts up again. The animals clearly don't care for the conditions, and Arminas, in particular, has his hands full with Darkfire and Ewan.
The inn that evening is larger, and for the first time you encounter other travelers. You are a day's ride from Rowena.
Desolute Friday August 17th, 2007 12:18:34 PM
He neither explains or apologizes for his actions. They are just a part of his life. "They come less often then they used to, but still, they are part of my penance." The half orc stays ahead of the group once again, if possible. He is rather unsure of what he let slip during his dreams, but the group does not seem very upset about his midnight outburst. He eats and goes to bed early, unless the group wants him to do some snooping around the town.
Desolute ooc Friday August 17th, 2007 12:35:51 PM
DMKathy, I just wanted to let you know i will be gone next week. Al will be covering for me in both playing Desolute as well as the post report. If I do not post by noon Woldian time, Al will cover it. See you soon.
Lorth Friday August 17th, 2007 12:46:03 PM
At the inn Lorth strips off his armor and cleans it, as the rain of the last few days has started to rust it. After an hour or two of work the armor again looks new. Satisfied Lorth sits down for dinner.
Arminas Friday August 17th, 2007 12:48:25 PM
The day is clearly not good for birds, as he sees birds hidden beneath the branches of trees as he travels. Arminas calls Ewan down, and has her perch upon the pommel of the saddle. He takes his traveling cloak and wraps it around her.
He casts speaks with animals, and speaks to both Ewan and Darkfire.
Darkfire, good horse. Thanks for carrying Ewan. I will see that you have extra oats this night, and a dry place to stable.
Changing his voice to a screech, he adds to Ewan:
Keep still, I will keep you dry and warm.
Upon reaching the Inn, Arminas asks of the stable hand.
"I need a dry place for my horse, with extra oats and an apple if you have one. The loft, does anyone sleep there? I would like to stay there with my eagle."
He hands the boy a gold piece.
He then takes care of Darkfire. He wipes him down and removes the mud from his hooves. Getting a large helping of oats and hay, he feeds the horse. Placing Ewan in the loft, he signals her to stand guard as he goes into the Inn for dinner with his companions.
"I will stay in the stables with the animals. It has been a difficult day for them."
Arminas will then ask for some raw meat if available for Ewan. If not, he will hunt for a rat in the barn to feed her.
Bralin Friday August 17th, 2007 1:27:49 PM
Bralin doesn't like rain. Never did. Rain is most likely to main reason dwarves went underground in the first place.
The dour dwarf gets even more dour, if that were possible. He says nothing and acknowledges no one. He just rides in the back looking for trouble, and thinks about what magic he could purchase to repel water.
Harvest Friday August 17th, 2007 3:48:39 PM
Harvest Moon shakes her head. "No need to apologize," she says to the half orc. "But thank you."
She rides near the half-orc, as the party makes it's way down the road to Rowena. Harvest Moon says little, but she is ready to listen, should he wish to speak. Even in the rain, the road is Harvest Moon's friend. The patter of rain upon her hood sings to her it's song.
Evenings are spent with her book. She fills in more of the map, placing the curve of the Trade Road to the west of the path they had taken before, through the woods and up the river. Small pictures mark the locations of the Inns.
Malgant Friday August 17th, 2007 5:00:41 PM
Malgant is troubled by Desolute's outburst last night. What did the man see in his dreams? Was it his past come back to haunt him? From the mans explaination he thinks maybe. Wanting to know more about the wold and those in it, this being one of his own faults, Malgant asks Desolute when the man is near the group. " What do you serve penance for Desolute? The penance given me by my elders has a finite duration, does yours?"Malgant waits to see if the man will answer. When they reach the Inn for the night Malgant notes that other travelers are present. He looks at them and wonders to where they travel. If any appear to be mages(based on Davros and Itzal and the one other mage he has ever spent more than 5 minutes with)Malgant will try and strike up a conversation with them, asking if the are headed to Rowena to the mage school, whether they have studied there long, what it is like, if they know Itzal ect.

Davros Friday August 17th, 2007 10:51:49 PM
Davros smiles at his grumpy dwarven companion. "I disagree with you Bralin, I like the rain. It reminds us that magic cannot solve all of our problems. Sometimes we must find the answers on our own."
"Desolute. You have been traveling with us for several days now. I think you have come to see that we are open and trusting. It is a dangerous life that we live, and we must be able to depend upon one another in order to survive. I would hope you be able to open up to us as well. Maybe you could tell us about the little incident at the Inn we were at two days ago? At the very least you could consider it payment for all the food and drink we have been buying you." With a smile in Davros' eyes, he leans forward, interested in hearing Desolute's tale.

Florin Jadenth Saturday August 18th, 2007 12:27:10 AM
Florin travels with the others and is happy for the nights rest at the last Inn. He simply shrugs off how the Inn keeper acts towards them.
During the travels he frowns at the rain and reminds himself to tend his weapons and armor once they can stop or have a dry place anyway. He also notes the Ajax's armor will probably beed looked over also.
Desolute Saturday August 18th, 2007 3:53:01 AM
Desolute answers Malgant first, "When I sit beside gargul and drink the wine of death will I be able to forget my sins." Desolute gives an emotionless expression to Davro's statement of what should be expected, "Our agreement was, I help you snoop for room and board. I have proven my skills are worth the few silver you spend on me, in my opinion, some of which you have witnessed already. I think in that respect we are even." He stands silent a moment before he continues, "Have you ever heard of going from the frying pan to the fire? I have seen horrors which the mortal mind can barely comprehend and participated in them as well. Do you really want me to go into detail about what is wrong with me? Should I weave you a tale of woe and agony so vivid, it is bored into your skull like an auger through the frozen capped lake? Please, let me spare you the same night mares I must bear. If whoever is on watch notices my restlessness, it is just easier to stir me before my sleep gets deep."
With that, Desolute smiles once again and looks up to the sky, allowing the rain to fall upon him, as if the gods of wold will cleanse him eventually. "Who wants to race? Don't break your horses leg."
Desolute takes off at full speed down the road, hoping they are satisfied, at least for now.
DM Kathy Monday August 20th, 2007 12:01:21 AM
You and your companions have varying reactions to the rain, but all of you are glad to reach the larger inn at the end of the third day's tavel. Florin is able to look after his arms and armor, at least briefly, to prevent rusting.
Arminas sees that the animals are taken care of, and the stablehand permits him a space in the stable loft. He is not even the only adventurer there; a tired-looking knight has already claimed one corner of the loft, apparantly as anxious for her steed as Arminas is for his animal friends.
Maglant speaks to several travelers, most of whom are merchants. There are a couple of adventurers (neither of them wizards), and a haughty-looking lady who does not deign to speak to Maglant at all. None of the travelers he speaks to are especially familiar with the magic school, although most of the merchants at least know where it is.
The next morning is showery, but less so than the day before. By noon, a wan sun is breaking through the clouds, and you reach the city of Rowena late in the afternoon under sunny skies.
Many of you know the city already, having visited hear with Remo Treadlefoot last year. Little has changed since then, and you're pretty sure you could find the very inn you stayed in while the envoy completed his business. Of course, it was a pretty fancy place. Perhaps something simpler would be better this time around. Or, should you try to speak to somebody at the magic school as the day wanes?
Lorth Monday August 20th, 2007 7:46:20 AM
Lorth has no opinion about what inn they stay in, so he waits for his companions to choose one and gets himself a room there. When they are settled he begins what is becoming a daily ritual, stripping off all his armor and polishing it up. Hopefully he is winning the battle against the rust. After taking care of his armor he rejoins his friends to see what they are planning.
Harvest Monday August 20th, 2007 10:58:56 AM
"Greetings, my name is Harvest Moon." The brown girl had approached the knight in the common room of the inn . "I apologize for intruding upon you, but I was wondering if I might speak to you about matters of the Law and how it is that you determine what is lawful and what is not? May I purchase the evening repast for us? Then we might speak over a congenial meal."
It was nice. To meet people upon the road, and to speak with them about their lives and about the things of which they care. It would have been so very nice to have shared these experiences with Anthos. The thought had brought a pang of loneliness to Harvest Moon.
Now here, in Rowena. Harvest seeks out a modest inn. Once Fyrda is cared for and her place to sleep has been established, she brings out the note of introduction given to them by Madame Dulcet.
"Should we introduce ourselves immediately to those in authority at the school?" she asks. "Or should we inquire about Itzal through less official channels first?"
Bralin Monday August 20th, 2007 11:42:38 AM
Like the paladins, Bralin spends quite a bit of time drying, oiling, and polishing his platemail. Rain plays havoc with the metal, but still the dwarf eyes the clearing skies with some foreboding.
All that blue sky makes the world seem so...open. The black clad warrior much prefers a ceiling, even a ceiling of clouds.
Thus, Bralin is more than happy to enter the nearest inn, and plan their next move under the nice wooden beams of the tavern room. Moreso, as ale is available.
In reply to Harvest, the dwarf idly scratches at his beard. "I would go to the school now," he replies, "and speak with the instructors."
Arminas Monday August 20th, 2007 4:16:12 PM
Surprised to find a knight also seeking to watch over her horse, Arminas bows to her.
"Greeting, I am Arminas Calaelen. It is good to meet someone who cares more for her horse than her own comforts. This is Darkfire, and this magnificient bird is Ewan. If the truth be known, though I travel with a group these are my true companions. What of you, are you also traveling in a company of other knights?.......... We journey to inquire at the magic school. It seems a young man who has recently learned there thinks more of his magic than he does of the law...... Yes, he conjured creatures to attack us and then fled. I don't know if he meant to kill us, but he will need to do much better if that is his plan. ...... His name is Itzal, though his true problem seems to be an invisible creature who he travels with. Have you ever heard of him?"
After conversing with the knight, Arminas will settle into the hay in the loft with Ewan nearby.
The next day, he travels into Rowena with the group. He awaits a decision on whether to get lodging first or ask at the school. Bralin's comments seem wise.
"Yes, it has been a long journey. Lets get to the point of this quickly."
Davros Monday August 20th, 2007 5:48:05 PM
"Personally, I am anxious to visit the school and would rather not wait."
Malgant Monday August 20th, 2007 8:31:17 PM
"It is all the same to me. I am not so weary from the road that a visit to the school would be a burden to me." Malgant waits for the others to make a decision, it is truely all the same to him.
Desolute - Sub/Al d20+3=20 d20+6=10 d20+8=18 Monday August 20th, 2007 8:56:12 PM
So straight forward. True to the form he'd seen so far. And how unfortunate to overlook the opportunities that less direct methods present.
"Yes. Why don't you speak to the teachers at the school." The half orc sucks at the tip of one ever so slightly protruding lower canine. "I'll chat up his classmates. See what I can find out."
Possibly find his room and have a look around.
(Gather Information 20, Open Lock 10, Search 18 if he gets in.)
Florin Jadenth Monday August 20th, 2007 9:16:11 PM
Florin listens to his companions and nods at Bralin's comment, "I'll go with you Bralin." With this said, Florin is ready to go when Bralin and any others are ready to go to the school to look and ask questions.
DM Kathy Tuesday August 21st, 2007 12:14:29 AM
During your stopover, Arminas takes the opportunity to speak with the knight, who introduces herself as Swiftblade. "Warlock can be a bit particular about his surroundings," she says, indicating a handsome gray warhorse. She says that she is traveling with a couple of companions, who are adventurers but not knights. She is not familiar with the magic school or Itzal. "We are strangers in these parts," she explains.
Harvest also speaks with the knight, when the latter dashes back to the inn for a bit of supper. Out of her shiny armor, dressed in worn riding leathers, she doesn't look much like a knight, but Harvest approaches her anyway and eagerly asks about the law.
"Best not ask me," the woman replies with a little laugh. "I'm not very good at following the rules. It's why I had to leave home."
When you arrive in Rowena, you decide to visit the magic school right away. Accordingly, you make your way past the bustle of the main market square and the government buildings, to a quiet, respectable residential area on the west side of town. After a couple of wrong turns, you eventually find the college, housed in what looks like a castle. Parts of it are very old, made of massive chunks of some dark stone, fitted together without mortar. Other parts are modern brick--and there is everything in between. A wall surrounds the school, with an iron gate in its center. Through the bars of the gate you can see a short sweeping drive leading to the front door of the main building. The gate is closed, and appears to be locked.
Next to the gate is a tiny wooden guardshack, where a pair of genial-looking guards appear to be finishing an afternoon snack. One of them approaches you, calmly brushing crumbs from his tabard. "Can I help you?" he asks. "Er...do you have an appointment?"
Lorth Tuesday August 21st, 2007 8:31:55 AM
Lorth follows his friends to the College of Magery and waits patiently while they are hailed by the guards. Like normal he allows his friends to do the talking as he isn't exactly sure what they are after here.
Desolute - Sub/Al Tuesday August 21st, 2007 8:40:34 AM
Desolute eyes the wall. Not as he had expected, and the thought of magical wards gives the half-orc pause. He leans up against said wall some small distance separated from the main group. To casual passers by he tips a hand of friendly greeting, trying to pick the student mages from the common city folk of Rowena.
Harvest Tuesday August 21st, 2007 8:46:28 AM
"I am sorry. No. We do not come with prior appointment," replies Harvest Moon. "But we have a letter of introduction from Madam Dulcet of the Jarlwolf Pitchfork Council," she adds. "We wish to speak with someone in authority here regarding the student, Itzal Jerse."
Looking up through the crest of mouse brown hair at the gate guard, Harvest proffers for the guard's inspection, the Letter of Introduction provided them by Madame Dulcet.
Bralin Tuesday August 21st, 2007 9:42:59 AM
Bralin half hears the obligatory back and forth between Harvest and the guards. His eyes are drawn to that portion of the castle composed of the massive blocks of dark stone.
Mayhap there will be an opportunity to examine it more closely. The dwarf hopes so, but for now he must wait.
He stands in the background near Lorth, hypnotized by the stone.
Arminas Tuesday August 21st, 2007 3:48:44 PM
Arminas waits, as Harvest talks with the guard. Ewan flies high above in lazy circles.
As he waits, he checks Darkfire's hooves for stones, and then brushes him down.
Davros Tuesday August 21st, 2007 3:49:23 PM
While Harvest engages the guards and attempts to secure entry, Davros joins Bralin in observing the structure. "I wonder if they are affiliated with the Star Mages guild?"
Malgant Tuesday August 21st, 2007 4:22:01 PM
As Arminas busies himself with Darkfire's hooves, Malgant steps up to the ranger to apparently give him a hand. While stooping to inspect the horses hooves he speaks quietly with Arminas. "You are on speaking terms with the boy's horse, yes? I find it unlikely that we met him on the road by chance and think he might actually be here either to cover a trail he does not want found, or perhaps lay a better trap than the ambush on the roadway. Do you think you could ask the guard if you can stable Darkfire while we look around and thus get a look in the stable? Maybe you could speak with any of the other horses or animals that are there and see if they have seen Itzal's mount recently, or the 'water friend' as his horse calls it. Worth a try don't you think?"
Arminas 2nd post Tuesday August 21st, 2007 4:33:55 PM
Arminas nods to Malgant.
"Thanks for the help my friend."
"Yes, I know his horse well. Good idea."
Arminas approaches the guard:
"Excuse me sir, it seems that a pebble lodged in my horse's hoof. and bruised his foot. Could I kindly have access to the stable? I'm sure the stable hand could help me fix him up."
Florin Jadenth d20+3=15 d20+3=17 Tuesday August 21st, 2007 11:07:35 PM
Florin stands back and lets Harvest do the talking while looking over the place with the others. He is curious of the place beyond the groups normal mission, he has never seen a magic school before so this would be his first time.
