Shopping Exhaustion (DM JohnP)
Monday August 6th, 2007 3:22:09 PM

A frenzy of shopping is occurring and everyone is busy with that. After making his purchases, Edmund settles into a quiet corner to start writing. It has to be a specific quiet corner, too, for the mage to be in the proper frame of mind.

Fortunately, they have the opportunity to do so since ther Constables answer some of their questions. Rabbitsfoot coughs slightly and looks around while Gormley quietly peers out the windows and then goes to the hallway to look up and down.

"Well, it's like this. Some weeks ago, a matron from Gold Quarter made a complaint of erratic behaviour from her husband. Now, of course, the Guard and Constables don't normally get involved in such domestic disputes. But, in this case, the gentle halfling in question was a prominent resident and involved in several noteworthy endeavours in the City. And the behaviour had already come to the attention of those in power."

"If he'd been older, say over eleventy-one, then the behaviour could be blamed on senility. But this halfling was still only a vigourous seventy. Anyway, after some observation, we noticed that the halfling regularly came to this house. Or, House, since it used to be called the House of Red Scarves. Of course, you lived nearby so you might have heard that."

"Well, during the course of investigation, we noticed some other people entering and leaving this House. People who had also been noted as acting a bit off, or who had been reported missing from other parts of the City. Which increased the attention and we started watching more people."

"But what really brought some attention is when one of the subjects ventured into Nightmare Quarter. Completely out of character for her, of course. Our watchers nearly rushed in to help her when two ruffians attacked what looked like a helpless elven woman. But they were surprised when 'she' handily dispatched the two ruffians and one of watchers, a former adventurer, recognized something about her."

"That caused us to look closer. We realized that a group of doppelgangers had been using this place to replace prominent City citizens. We didn't learn why they were doing it, but the risks were pretty great so the Guards closed the place down. We ony captured one of the doppelgangers - the rest escaped in the confusion, or simply never came to the House that evening."

"We think that the doppelgangers kept records but we never found them. When you had your little adventure, we hoped that you might have found some records. Believe me, we've had the best ... specialists, retired adventurers the lot of them ... search this place from top to bottom and we haven't found anything. Either the records never existed, which we doubt, since this type of place always keeps records, or they were removed."

"So the records are either somewhere in the City. Or, of course, the tunnels from this place haven't been fully explored. The only records that we have are those that must be filed with the City - tax records, employee registries and the like."

"What we're afraid of is that doppelgangers are still impersonating some City residents. And we'll probably never find them all until we get those records."

"So, are you willing to help us?"

DM Apology - early post because of tabletop gaming tonight and I'm the DM.

Edmund settles down to study. And study.

...and study.

He is quite unavailable during the whole thing, and any attempts to interrupt him are bootless, for he just waves people away contemptuously without even looking up from his books, scrolls, paper, ink, and tea.

Kadaz
Tuesday August 7th, 2007 5:13:05 AM

Kadaz listens closely to Rabbitsfoot. "Of course we'll look for those records. You say you've searched this house thoroughly but the tunnels still need some work. Have your folks looked into the tunnels at all or is it just what we've done so far?"

"And just to spell things out properly, do we get the title to this house before or after the records are found?"

Shadow
Tuesday August 7th, 2007 5:53:26 AM

Shadow listens intently to Rabbitsfoot explanation of the why the House has been closed up. He winces when there is an indication of possible more impersonations. "Yes, we will need to find those records or the city, including us, will not be safe from this threat." Shadow looks at his fellow adventurers.

"We will need to map out those tunnels, so we do not duplicate our efforts. Is it possible to close up the tunnels after we search them?" Shadow looks at dwarf of the party.

Arm
Tuesday August 7th, 2007 6:06:25 AM

Arm tenses when he hears about the dopplegangers yet again. Stealing a glance at Birdie to make sure he's ok, he looks at Mira and raises an eyebrow as if to say, "Well, that explains where they came from, then..".

Lenny for Conner
Tuesday August 7th, 2007 6:07:50 AM

Conner whips his head around when the dopplegangers are mentioned, thinking that thier previous incursion into this house may be what have set them on the Order's trail. As soon as he can, he whispers his thoughts to Kadaz.

Mira - Sub/Al
Tuesday August 7th, 2007 10:20:51 AM

Mira settles upon a window sill and listens as constables Gormley and Rabbitsfoot fill in some of the mystery of the past few days. The sorcerer pushes her glasses back up her nose and ponders the information.

"But where *did* they come from?" she asks out loud? They sound very organized. If they kept records, then they must have a place to put the records which means someone to tell the others what place that is going to be. Someone had to get them organized in the first place."

"Hopefully that name will be in the records. Where do we start?"

Kirsten
Tuesday August 7th, 2007 10:53:49 AM

As she listens to what Gormley and Rabbitsfoot have to say about these dopplegangers, the paladin begins to look rather distressed. All this business about people being impersonated just rubs Kirsten the wrong way.

Her gaze shifts towards Birdie, then towards Rabbitsfoot.

"The faster we figure this out," she mutters. "The sooner I can stop worrying about who is real and who is not. Count me in."

Thar
Tuesday August 7th, 2007 4:14:50 PM

Thar frowns as he hears about the activities of the dopplegangers and their unnatural existence. But he is slightly relieved now that they have a better idea of what has been going on and some direction on how to stop these dopplegangers.

To Mira and Kadaz, he responds "In my opinion, we need to get exploring these tunnels. The records may tell us some, but I have a feeling that we'll discover more by investigating where the tunnels lead. I'll do whatever the group wants, but that's my opinion."

"If we close the tunnels Shadow, we may be closing our only safe exit. Is there an easier way to protect our rear, maybe by trapping the tunnel?"

Arm
Wednesday August 8th, 2007 6:02:26 AM

Absently twirling his new rod in his fingers, Arm agrees, "Yes, we'll do as you ask. This venture could prove fruitful for us on TWO fronts.". As he says this, he takes another appraising glance around the room.

Lenny for Conner
Wednesday August 8th, 2007 6:03:36 AM

Standing up and stretching to his full height, Conner says, "I'll go as well. We'd best be off soon, though...I'm itching to hurt something.".

Shadow
Wednesday August 8th, 2007 7:26:02 AM

Shadow will head downstairs to once again take a look at the tunnel(s) that lead from the basement. He is checking for any types of traps that might have been left behind.

Mira - Sub/Al
Wednesday August 8th, 2007 8:57:56 AM

"I don't think trapping the tunnels would be a good idea, Thar." Mira stands from the window sill and begins pacing as she thinks. "We don't know how many tunnels there are with how many branches. And besides, traps might catch perfectly innocent people. Those homeless people might be living down there."

"There's a not too expensive magic wand we could buy to warn us with an Alarm. It would be possible to scatter these wards around the tunnels. But even a passing Rat would trigger it. We'd never be sure if an alarm was caused by something dangerous or something harmless. And if we put up several, we wouldn't know which Alarm it was."

"I don't think there's any other way around this than to face the danger head on. Why don't we go down to this House of Red Scarves and take a look first before deciding on how to enter the tunnels? Once we see the tunnels, how many there are and how big, and such, then we can decide what to do."

Edmund
Wednesday August 8th, 2007 2:25:32 PM

Edmund continues to study, doing his best to learn some useful spells.

He goes through an enormous amount of tea and cakes whilst studying. It must take a lot out of him.

Kirsten
Wednesday August 8th, 2007 4:06:46 PM

Kirsten moves to sit nearby, listening to the others speak and peering at them. For now, she will let them do the planning. The paladin never was one for sneaking around.

Kadaz
Wednesday August 8th, 2007 5:45:19 PM

"Let's go back into the tunnels as soon as we can. The longer we give those creatures the more they can regroup and restart their plans. We just need a way to get past that blocked tunnel. They obviously don't want us to go down that way, so I suggest we do." Kadaz gives his opinon and waits.

Then he has a bad thought. "What if during a fight one of us gets separated and the dopplegangers imitate one of us? I suggest we develop a pass sign so that we can quickly identify a fake."

Planning (DM JohnP)
Wednesday August 8th, 2007 11:26:05 PM

DM Apology - Sorry folks! Power failure last night just as I was starting the DM post. It lasted until 3 a.m. and I wasn't about to get up and post then. And dicking around with the cable modem tonight has made me late, so it's a short post.

While the Constables wait, the party discusses various ways of either exploring, sealing or guarding the tunnels that connect to the basement of the house on Helm's Way. Most of what they discuss makes a lot of sense.

Constable Rabbitsfoot hasn't really been listening to the planning and looks rather distracted. Gormley has continued to look at the windows, presumably trying to see the Guards posted outside to ensure that they are watching carefully. Rabbitsfoot comes over and extends a bundle of papers to the party.

"Here, as I said, we only have those records left with the City. Unless you'd rather go exploring right away, I'd suggest that you check the list of employees. That might give some clues as to who was replaced, or you might even stumble upon one of the doppelgangers. If you do, try to take it alive"

"Of course, if you'd rather go crawling through the tunnels, go right ahead. Only thing, though, is that you can't officially be here. On City rolls, this property was seized for tax arrears. You can only spend so much time here before it gets suspicious. Later, we can see about freeing the property for a tax sale. If you're still interested."

"By the way, things seem to have cooled down a little bit here in Trade Quarter. You can probably go back to your apartments, if you wish. We ... ahhh ... can't keep you in a hotel forever, you know."

Rabbitsfoot stands there, waiting for everyone's responses.

Edmund
Thursday August 9th, 2007 12:48:47 AM

Edmund doesn't give a response. If the others look over at him, he has both fingers in his ears and is shooting them nasty glances from the corner.

If Rabbitsfoot or Gormley notice him, Edmund also looks meaningfully at the empty tea pot and empty cake plate.

Kadaz
Thursday August 9th, 2007 12:53:45 AM

Kadaz is the first to reply. "Ok, we'll check the employees first. But I want to get back the tunnels after that." It's easy to see where his heart lies.

Arm
Thursday August 9th, 2007 6:02:20 AM

Arm agrees with Kadaz, "Yes, let's check them out first. The tunnels aren't going anywhere for the time being, anyway.".

Lenny for Conner
Thursday August 9th, 2007 6:04:02 AM

Conner nods reluctantly at the suggestion to check out the employees, wanting more to get into more action than talking. "Well, he didn't say anything about taking MORE than one alive," he thinks to himself.

Shadow
Thursday August 9th, 2007 6:05:21 AM

"Taking a look at the list of employees will need to be done first, but I doubt we will find anything." Shadow states as he looks at Gromley and Rabbitsfoot. He wonders if the tunnels will lead them anywhere as the last time the doppleganger was able to melt the rock to seal the tunnel. He just hopes that they can unravel the whole scheme and really make sure they are cleansed of any association of wrong doing.

Mira - Sub/Al
Thursday August 9th, 2007 10:26:53 AM

"Can I see that list?" Mira turns her attention to the names, looking at each one for significance.

"I wonder if there's any chance that any of these people are actually still alive. We are, and they tried to replace us too. That means someone out there might need rescuing. I think we'll need to get descriptions of these people, in case the doppelgangers are still impersonating them."

OoC: Sorry, I'm confused. Is the House on Helm's Way and the House of Red Scarves one and the same building?

Kirsten
Thursday August 9th, 2007 6:09:09 PM

The paladin seems to perk up at the mention of checking the lists before stalking off through underground tunnels.

"I agree with Mira, we need to check these people out before we do anything else. What's the point of stalking around through tunnels with what little information we have? Let's see if any of these people can help us with a little information."

Hitting the Town ... Maybe (DM JohnP)
Thursday August 9th, 2007 10:58:07 PM

DM Note - Some time adjustment is required here because of the Catacombs visits and scribing spells. As of this post, consider that four days have elapsed that can be used for scribing spells. From this point on, Edmund will need to determine whether he stays behind to scribe, or goes out with the others.

Rabbitsfoot nods and smiles when the group accepts his proposal. He extends the bundle of papers towards Arm, who seems to be doing most of the talking for the group.

"Here you go. No descriptions, but you might be able to find people who know them well enough to describe them to you."

The halfling Constable glances over at Gormley who has been standing by the window. The half-elf turns and nods silently.

"Well, it's late. Maybe too late to start looking for people. You can start looking, though, if you like. But I would recommend that none of you go anywhere without company."

"And you didn't say whether you wanted to move back to your apartment. We'll put you up for one more night in the inn. Anyway, let's get going because my stomach is telling me that it's time for a snack."

Rabbitsfoot and Gormley walk to the front door of the House of Red Scarves on Helm's Way. If the party does manage to acquire this place, they will have to devise a better name.

++++++

When they take the time to examine the lists, the party learns that most of the reported employees of the former bawdy house lived in the poor parts of Trade Quarter and Rogue Quarter. The list isn't too long, so it might not take too long before they get the chance to investigate the tunnels under the house.

The group now needs to do some planning. Do they immediately start searching for the past employees, or wait until morning to start looking? Are they going to split up, or go as one large group?

Arm
Friday August 10th, 2007 6:02:53 AM

Arm takes the list and gives it a perfuntory look-over, but doesn't see any names that he recognizes or has heard of. After handing the list to Mira, he turns to Rabbitsfoot and says, "Thank you for your continued hospitality. We will be out of your hair very soon, but I think we should wait until morning to start looking into these people.". He then looks around at the rest to see if they agree.

Lenny for Conner
Friday August 10th, 2007 6:08:40 AM

Looking over Mira's shoulder at the list Conner chimes in, "Whatever we do, we need to stay together so none of us are 'duplicated'. Also, we need to take Birdie with us. Let's rest for now, and get a good start tomorrow.".

Shadow
Friday August 10th, 2007 6:21:16 AM

"We appreciate the hospitality of the guard, but I for one I am up for returning to our apartment and sleeping in my own bed." Shadow does look very tired. "I agree that we will all be better off looking in the morning. We can as a group see if we can meet these employees."

Kadaz
Friday August 10th, 2007 8:45:55 AM

"I'm up for sleeping in my bed tonight, then getting an early start in the morning."

He pauses to think about how any dopplegangers in the group of employees will act. "We need to find out where these people have gotten jobs. Any that work in places that serve influential people need to be carefully checked out. Dopplegangers probably will seek out these places, rather than solitary jobs or ones that interact only with poor folks."

"And I was serious earlier about having a sign and countersign set up. I propose that if you suspect one of us has been replaced you say a number, say 5. The proper response is just to add 2 to that number, so the reply should be 7. This is simple so we don't forget it. But it's not immediately understandable to someone over hearing it. Ok?"

Thar
Friday August 10th, 2007 10:06:46 AM

"I'm all for resting and starting fresh in the morning. That way, if our investigations take a great deal of time, we'll be prepared for a long search."

To kadaz, he cautions "You're ideas good, but I've heard that dopplegangers can read thoughts and if that's the case, they could figure out any coding system. As an alternative, what about having a person we suspect of being duplicated perform some type of feat? Maybe like me, Ed or Mira casting a spell? Or the others of you spar with someone who knows your style? or Shadow could try to climb a short wall or something like that. That way, its something dopplegangers can't reproduce?"

Kirsten
Friday August 10th, 2007 11:14:33 AM

"Thar is probably right." Kirsten adds. "Some feat or spell would be best. I would be too afraid of the dopplegangers being able to figure out anything else we might come up with. I could summon Wolfgang."

Kirsten, tired as the rest of them are, agrees that they should have a good night's sleep before heading out.

Mira - Sub/Al
Friday August 10th, 2007 4:12:18 PM

"That's a good idea, Thar. Magic. Maybe I could disappear." The sorcerer smiles as she folds the list into three's and places it safely into a pouch.

On the way out, Mira gives the house one last look, then thoughts of the apartments come to her. Her own bed, a bath in the room with her own things at hand in the places that she knows.

"Yes, lets go home."

Edmund
Friday August 10th, 2007 9:01:54 PM

Edmund needs a few more days to finish his studies. He takes a short break to confer with the others.

"Sounds like it will be primarily information-gathering," he says. "I should finish this studying now, I think. Of course, if something comes up, or you are going into danger, I can postpone it until later."

Then, Edmund returns to his studies unless someone indicates that he is, in fact, urgently needed.

Returning Home (DM JohnP)
Saturday August 11th, 2007 11:40:22 PM

The Constables walk out the House on Helm's Way, followed by the party. It seems that most have voted for returning to the apartment in Trade Quarter instead of going back to the inn. The Guards nod to the party as they move south through the Quarter towards where they reside.

Even though it's nearing evening, there are still enough people walking back and forth. Occasionally, someone will smile and nod at the party as if in greeting. They are slightly alarmed when an old elf man comes up and wants to shake their hands.

Things get even stranger when they approach the apartment. The steps up to the door are covered with flowers and other small gifts. When the party gets closer they can see some scorch marks on the door but those are nearly covered by notes that have been pinned or tacked to the door. It's going to take some time to clear these things away. As they do that, passersby continue to nod and recognize them. Perhaps what happened to the Plateau City Defence League wasn't so unpopular after all? Of course, all this goodwill might disappear if people learned that the party had very little to do with it.

Entering the apartment shows that nothing has changed. Everything ... right down to the dirtly laundry that someone left laying on the floor ... is where they left it several days before. The return home is very satisfying and everyone falls into the accustomed routine. Mira bustles into the kitchen to make a meal and everyone else does what they do.

While they are waiting for supper, Arm and the others take the time to review the records for the employees of the former House of Red Scarves. For the most part, the only information recorded are the names, job titles and residences of the employees. A quick list shows that three live, or lived, in Trade Quarter and two in Nightmare Quarter. The remaining ten employees had residences in Rogue Quarter.

After supper, everyone retires for the night.

++++++

Morning dawns bright and clear, promising nice conditions for the day. As everyone is breaking their fast, someone knocks on the door. When someone opens the door, they see a youth dressed in robes with a holy symbol of Pantheon around his neck. Birdie looks up from where she has been begging for scraps but isn't concerned.

"Excuse me, does Kirsten Rislyn reside here? Justice Mir Stonehaft requests her presence at the temple of Pantheon. The main temple next to the law courts. If she doesn't know the way, I can take her there."

Kadaz
Sunday August 12th, 2007 5:18:25 PM

Finally back at home Kadaz carefully walks around the outside of their house, looking for any changes. He then enters, as puzzled as the others at what is going on. But they seem to have the neighborhood's approval, so that's good.

Kadaz goes into the kitchen to help Mira with supper. Afterwards he spends time cleaning his armor and sharpening weapons. And, of course, playing with Birdie.

In the morning the knock at the door makes Kadaz reach out for his axe. But he quickly relaxes when Birdie shows no sign of concern. "Good boy" he whispers as he tosses the dog a scrap. It quickly disappears.

"Kirsten, would you like some of us to tag along? This might concern all of us." he asks the paladin.

Kirsten
Sunday August 12th, 2007 8:51:09 PM

The knock at the door makes Kirsten jump slightly from where she had been at prayer. The paladin looks even more surprised when the youth asks for her specifically.

Kirsten slowly makes her way to the door, peering at the youth rather curiously. She looks back towards Kadaz when he speaks.

"Ah, thank you for the offer," she looks back towards the boy. "I think I can manage this one on my own. Seems harmless enough, doesn't he? Birdie doesn't seem to mind him."

She looks towards the visitor, "You will have to show me the way."

Edmund
Sunday August 12th, 2007 9:26:13 PM

Edmund has been very busy studying, which is to say he has been very busy making it very obvious that he is not to be disturbed. Little noises occasion nasty looks from the half-elf mage, and he pointedly ignores any conversations or inquiries directed at him.

That said, even Edmund's obstropulous and obstinate personality are not able to overcome his surprise and incredulity when someone arrives asking for his recently-arrived childhood friend. With a great deal of thumping and bumping, he comes hurtling down from his room, arriving breathlessly just as Kirsten agrees to go with the visitor.

"Wait, wait! What's all this, then!?" he exclaims anxiously. "How do we know... I mean... he could be one of... them!!"

Edmund raises his eyebrows, examining the visitor with grave concern and no small amount of suspicion.

"Don't be foolish, Kirsten! Take some of them with you. Kadaz, for God's sake man, yes, go with her. Dangerous times, and all, what? People impersonating us, PCDL goons, dopplegangers, can't be too careful. Besides, best to not go about alone anyway. Might... fall in a ditch... hit your head. All that armour. No, no, absolutely take someone with you."

Edmund hops up and down a bit whilst declaiming all of this, occasionally waving his hands in a theatrical and exaggerated fashion. Despite this, he is unable to cover up his concern which becomes more obvious with each word.

"Do be reasonable, Kirsten!" he protests, finally.

Arm
Monday August 13th, 2007 5:59:03 AM

Arm grimaces a bit at Thar's statement about proof, but he is not quite sure why. That is, until the following morning while they are eating. "Thar, Mira..magic won't be enough proof to tell us from the dopplegangers. Remember, they were casting spells down in the tunnels, so we're going to have to come up with something else.".

Arm tenses visibly when the stranger arrives. If Kirsten decides to go, he will look to Conner immediately after the door closes and say, "Follow her, if you please, but don't let yourself be seen.".

Lenny for Conner
Monday August 13th, 2007 6:00:25 AM

Conner nods firmly at Arm's request. As soon as she is a safe distance from the front door, he opens it cautiously, then falls in several paces behind them, but not close enough to be noticed by them.

Shadow
Monday August 13th, 2007 8:38:31 AM

Shadow is surprised at the reception/attention they are getting from various people. He wonders why this event has gotten so much notice.

"Well if we are splitting up some, I will go with the group to rogues quarter." Shadow suggests. He will go with whoever is headed that way. He is contemplating this when the knock at the door happens. He relaxes when the person is a messenger for Pantheon. He watches as Kirsten hurries up and gets ready and then leaves, followed shortly by Conner. He wonders what that is all about.

Thar ail Baerer
Monday August 13th, 2007 9:32:48 AM

"Good point Arm, I had forgotten about them casting spells in our last battle with them. I didn't think they could cast the same spells that their 'target" could use, but it seems that maybe they can."

Nodding to Shadow, "I'll go to the rogue's quarter too, and see what's going on there with whomever else is going."

He'll gather his gear, say his morning prayers and await the rest of the party's preparations for leaving.

Mira - Sub/Al
Monday August 13th, 2007 10:29:17 AM

Mira drops into a serious face.

"I don't think it would be likely that anyone could duplicate the same range of spells that I could, Thar." The sorcerer looks across the room at Arm, contemplation in he eyes. Decision and determination follow and she marches across the room to take the bard's arm and pull him to a more discreet place.

Cupping Arm's face in her hands, Mira places a kiss upon his lips.

"Do you think that would be enough to identify me by?" she asks.

Investigations and an Interview (DM JohnP)
Tuesday August 14th, 2007 12:21:07 AM

Kirsten rises to follow the messenger from the apartment, trusting another follower of Pantheon and Birdie's reaction. Still, the others are cautious so Conner follows along behind. The page leads Kirsten west out of Trade Quarter, through Guild Quarter and into Merchant Quarter. Perhaps the youth has heard something, for he deliberately takes a path that leads away from the headquarters of the Plateau City Defense League.

Finally, Kirsten arrives at the imposing bulk of the Royal Courthouse. The stones steps leading up to the front door are already busy with ordinary citizens and the professional pleaders that may represent them during proceedings inside. The crowd is large enough that Conner could easily remain outside without notice or the fighter could keep up with Kirsten and the page as they head inside. The page directs Kirsten through the Courthouse lobby to the main staircase, climbing upwards to one of the higher floors of the building. There is little noise up here on a floor that seems to be devoted to offices. The page goes up to one door, knocking until a man's voice responds from inside. When she looks inside, Kirsten sees a male dwarf sitting behind a desk who nods when he sees the paladin.

Kirsten only - Highlight to display spoiler: {The dwarf nods and stands, moving silently to an inner door where he knocks gently. When a quiet response is heard from inside the dwarf opens the door and has a quiet conversation with the woman inside. "She's here. I'll send her right in."

The dwarf then opens the door wider, gesturing for Kirsten to enter. Kirsten sees a long office, with ceiling height shelves of books on two walls. The third wall is dominated by tall glass windows through which the morning sun shines. An older dwarf woman is tending some potted plants, watering and trimming some. She turns when Kirsten enters, allowing the paladin to see the prominent holy symbol of Pantheon hanging from a thick gold chain.

"Come in! Come in. Brun will get you some tea or whatever."

The dwarf woman moves to a set of leather chairs flanking a table. Conveniently, there are chairs for both persons of short and taller stature. She sits in one, gesturing to one of the chairs intended for taller people before moving some leather bound scrolls from the table.

"While we're waiting for Brun to finish making the tea, tell me a bit about your recent adventures. I've had the Constables' report, but I'd rather hear from you."

"If you're wondering why I asked you here ... well ... we paladins of Pantheon should rely on one another."

}

The others gather their gear and prepare to travel to Rogue Quarter. Checking the list of names and addresses, they go to the closest one first. When they ask about the woman who used to work as a seamstress, they are directed to a tailor's shop close to the border with Trade Quarter. Finding the shop, the woman professes to know "nothing about anything". Birdie sits quietly by Kadaz' feet.

The group gets a similar response at the next address, that for a woman who worked as a scullery maid. The woman is outside behind the rundown apartment, hanging clothing on a line while several children play and fight around her.

The third address turns out to not exist ... or, if it did, it would be in the middle of an intersection. That address was for a man, Jebed March, employed as a guard.

DM Reminder - Please keep those character sheets rolling in. I have three so far.

Arm
Tuesday August 14th, 2007 5:52:42 AM

A rare flush comes to Arm's cheeks at Mira's display of affection. Holding her closely, he whispers to her, "That will MORE than do, but it is not YOU that I fear for, my love. For you see, until this business is over my plan is to never leave your side...it's the rest that I am worried about.".

As they investigate the addresses, he becomes more and more agitated, especially when they come upon the one that no longer exists. Not quite sure what he DID expect, Arm taps his foot on the pavement in frustration and says, "This is getting us nowhere. Let's try a different quarter.".

OOC: Um, Scott...I posted for Conner last Tuesday..it was directly underneath my own. :)

Lenny for Conner
Tuesday August 14th, 2007 5:55:00 AM

After a moment's hesitation, Conner follows the two into the building and picks the least inconspicuous spot in sight of the door to wait for her. "Wonder what this is all about," he thinks as he waits for Kirsten to return. Once she does, he will follow at the same discreet distance, on guard now since she was out of his sight for a bit. "Once Birdie gets a good sniff at her, I'll know for sure.." he muses.

Kadaz
Tuesday August 14th, 2007 7:29:09 AM

Stand in the middle of the intersection Kadaz looks around at where Jebed said he lived. "Well, we have our first suspect. Let's revisit the employees and ask them about this March fellow. Maybe one of them has a different address or knows something else."

Shadow
Tuesday August 14th, 2007 8:40:38 AM

Shadow will follow along with the group keeping an eye out for anything unusual. Shadow starts to wonder if this is a wild goose chase after the first and second employee, but knows they are on the right trail when the third one does not pan out. "We need to see if anyone knows this mystery man."

OOC: First, I am working on the character sheet and should have it to you soon, John. Lenny, I am sorry I just missed the post for Conner.

Thar
Tuesday August 14th, 2007 9:32:10 AM

Agreeing with Kadaz and Shadow, Thar affirms "Yes, this guy sounds very suspicous, especially if he gave some sort of false address."

"Shadow, I have a feeling that our asking around is going to get the attention of the dopplegangers or their associates. Should you and I disguise ourself and start watching the rest of the group's "backtrail" and see what develops? Maybe we can detect if anyone is following us"

Kirsten
Tuesday August 14th, 2007 12:08:46 PM

She follows the guide through the city, making note of the direction they had gone in so she can find her way back afterwards. When admitted into the room, Kirsten will bow subtly to the dwarf woman and then move to sit where beckoned.

Kirsten nods in understanding of the other paladin's last comment, and then speaks, "Well I had originally only intended to stay long enough to visit a friend of mine here in the city..."

She goes on to explain what she had experienced so far in her time there. Kirsten speaks of the trouble with the PCDL and the statue, and then the tunnels, and most recently about the dopplegangers. Of course, she is unable to fill in a lot of the blanks, as she knows very little of what had happened before her arrival.

"Anyways, I'm still not entirely sure what to make of all this. It seems like many of the people here are pleased with what my new companions have accomplished so far."

She peers at the other paladin curiously, still wondering why she might have been summoned to such a place.

Mira - Sub/Al
Tuesday August 14th, 2007 2:22:18 PM

"Instead of going back to the seamstress and the maid," Mira suggests, "why don't we continue on through the rest of the list. If there are any more suspicious people, then we could ask about them all at the same time instead of having to go back after each one."

"It would probably be safer for the innocents involved too. If we are being followed."

Edmund
Tuesday August 14th, 2007 3:37:01 PM

Edmund is pacified when Conner goes with Kirsten to ensure the message is not some sort of trap.

Returning to his room, he once again settles into his studies, doing his best to get through the material as quickly as possible.

Arm
Wednesday August 15th, 2007 5:59:26 AM

Arm looks to Thar and says, "Excellent idea, my friend. I'm beginning to have a bad feeling about this whole business, and it's best if we have someone watch our backs.".

Lenny for Conner
Wednesday August 15th, 2007 6:00:26 AM

Conner studiously admires the floor while he waits for Kirsten to exit, hoping that nothing has happened to her in the meantime.

When Thar makes his suggestion, Shadow immediatley starts looking around a little nervously. "Thar, that is a great idea, and I wish I had thought about it. Why don't we do that, and the rest of will be able to continue on." With that Shadow will move away from the group with Thar. He will reach into his bag and start to come up with pieces of clothing and different things that he starts to put on. After his transformation it is hard for any of the group to really recognize him.

Wednesday August 15th, 2007 7:41:22 PM

Following Shadow's directions and requesting his aid on making a disguise, Thar will move to a quiet, out of the way place. He'll carefully disguise himself as a tired elf returning home from a long day at work and begin shadowing his own party.

Before he leaves though, he'll say "Good call Mira. Let's get all the people interviewed and then we can pick up whoever seems suspicous. I'm glad you thought of the innocents, since I don't trust the dopplegangers to respect those who meant them no harm"

Kirsten's Interview (DM JohnP)
Wednesday August 15th, 2007 10:34:41 PM

Kirsten Only - Highlight to display spoiler: {Justice Mira Stonehaft sips her tea as Kirsten relates the tale of her recent adventures. Most of the time, the dwarf paladin nods in agreement but there are some parts that cause her to frown in consternation.

"Well, that certainly agrees with what I have heard from other quarters. While no one seems to know the true motives of these doppelgangers, it is surely intended to sow disorder and mistrust in the City."

"I think that you, and your companions, should investigate and pursue this matter. If possible, you should bring the offenders to justice. But ending this threat to the City is the most important matter."

The Justice takes a moment to sip at her tea again. She frowns before continuing.

"One thing that you mentioned bother me, though. You said that your companion summoned some fiendish creatures. You surely realize that this is simply the first step on the easy path to wrong-doing. A mage can only do this so many times before they begin to identify with the creatures that they summon."

"So, I would ask one other thing of you besides continuing the pursuit of those who are trying to infiltrate the City. That task is to monitor and caution your companions to avoid the temptation of summoning evil creatures since it inevitably leads to corruption."

"Could you do those things for our Church?"
}

Pounding the Pavement (DM JohnP)
Wednesday August 15th, 2007 10:58:46 PM

Conner waits outside the Royal Courthouse for Kirsten to emerge.

Meanwhile, the others keep pounding the pavement in Rogue Quarter. By lunchtime, they have found two other former employees that either provided fictitious addresses or disappeared. One was "Gloria Ash" who was listed as an "entertainer". The second was "Geordie Hornbeam", listed as a handyman.

Do they continue looking, or does the party now pursue the three individuals that have surely aroused their suspicions?

Arm
Thursday August 16th, 2007 5:55:53 AM

Exasperated by their continued streak of nothing, Arm says, "I think we should try to find these so-called 'employees' with the false addresses and forget looking for the rest. Should we find any of them, I think between the three we will be able to find out SOMETHING..".

OOC: you're quite welcome, Bob...nothing substantial has happened in your absence, and I chose not to buy anything with your share of the loot...I left that up to you :)

Shadow
Thursday August 16th, 2007 6:34:29 AM

"Yes, lets see if we can find any trace of these mysterous employees." Shadow agrees. If I need to I can ask more questions of the guild.

Kirsten
Thursday August 16th, 2007 6:43:05 AM

Kirstin listens quietly to what the dwarf paladin has to say, and then nods afterwards.

"Of course, I will do everything that I can to see to that."

Unfortunately, she has little confidence in the fact that the others would listen to her warnings. Kirsten realizes, of course, that a few of them probably don't trust her and would be less than apt to listen to whatever she has to say.

Kadaz
Thursday August 16th, 2007 7:41:24 AM

"But how do we find these imposters? If they are shapechangers then they probably look like someone else." Kadaz points out the obvious difficulty. "But at least it's a place to start. I guess it's our best choice."

Mira - Sub/Al
Thursday August 16th, 2007 8:52:40 AM

"First thing," Mira pushes her glasses up her nose, "I think is to go back to the seamstress and the maid and ask them if they'd seen any of these three befor. They might not look the same now, but there might be something that they remember about the three that's the same. Something we could use to identify the dopplegangers."

"We could also ask them if they remember any of these three associating with others. That could give us other leads, other people to talk to. And maybe they overheard one of them mentioning names or places. If some of these names or places were mentioned by more than one of them, it might be something to look into."

OoC: Hey, Bob. Is Carla back too? Carla?

Conner
Thursday August 16th, 2007 7:42:18 PM

The fighter maintains his post outside the courthouse and awaits Kirsten's return. His vigilance lapses as he turns his mind to his new found fortune and the magic items he might buy at the famous catacombs..."better armor?...a stronger shield?...perhaps one of those tattoos that the barbarian had?..."

OOC Yes, Carla is back!!

Getting Together (DM JohnP)
Thursday August 16th, 2007 11:01:30 PM

Kirsten's interview is completed and she makes her way back down the stairs of the Royal Courthouse. When she emerges unto the street, it's only a moment before Conner moves up beside her. The pair make their way back to the apartments where Edmund has been exhaustively working over his spellbooks. The wizard is almost glad of the disruption when the pair return safely.

++++++

The others make their way back to where they found the seamstress and maid. It's getting close to supper time and they find the former maid standing outside her home, talking to another woman who is trying to keep hold of two small children. When the maid sees the party approaching, she finishes her conversation with the woman and turns to whoever is in the lead.

Mira  d20+10=28 d20+8=25 d20+11=17
Friday August 17th, 2007 12:15:13 AM

Mira approaches the maid in an open and friendly fashion. If the woman who appears to be a maid is receptive to the sorcerer, Mira introduces herself using her first and last name, and gesturing to those who have accompanied her as being from the Mithril Order.

"We are interested in acquiring a building over on Helm's Way where once you worked. I think it was known as the House of Red Scarves?" Mira blushes a little before continuing, "anyway, before City officials will consider our offer, we have to verify past ownership and such," she volunteers, steering around her true motive. "The city folk lost records during the troubles, so we're trying to find someone who might have been in charge...someone who kept books or records about the place...who might help us out." Mira takes in the nearby woman with the two children before returning her gaze to the maid and asks politely, "can you think of anyone, someone who might have been in charge, and who might be able to help us?"

The sorcerer waits with held breath.

Will the party finally get some useful information, or be sent off on another wild goose chase?

Arm
Friday August 17th, 2007 6:04:40 AM

As Kadaz speaks, Arm smiles at him and says, "Never fear, Birdie will sniff them out for us.".

As Mira speaks to the woman, Arm thinks much along the same lines as her, and wonders if this exercise is meant to intentionally split up the party so that they may be replaced. As he ponders this, he wonders if the dopplegangers are aware of Birdie's talents yet. When they have a private moment, he will take that up with Kadaz. Also, he wonders how Conner and Kirsten are getting along.

Kadaz  d20+1=4
Friday August 17th, 2007 7:33:21 AM

Kadaz isn't very good at interrogating others, especially those who can't be roughed up a bit first. So he gladly stays in the back as Mira asks the questions. As he does so he watches the neighborhood, checking to see who is watching them. Unfortuantely, watching is another one of those things Kadaz isn't very good at. (spot 4)

Thar
Friday August 17th, 2007 3:29:45 PM

Thar will maintain his position, trying to be unobtrusive and continue slowly walking down the street. He won't stay in any one spot too long, and tries to get a 360 degree view of the surrounding area and hopefully spot anyone following them.

Edmund
Saturday August 18th, 2007 1:11:14 AM

Studying continues.

Edmund has made it clear that he is available if there is a possibility of danger. He trusts the others can handle themselves.

The scribing process is dreadfully slow. With hope, he will be done soon.

Shadow
Saturday August 18th, 2007 9:45:44 AM

Shadow is used to watching stuff from the shadows, so this out in broad daylight askng questions is really not his strong suit. He will allow Mira and the others that seem to like to ask the questions do what they are good at. He will keep an eye out for anything unusual, though.

Kirsten
Saturday August 18th, 2007 9:56:49 AM

Once back at the apartments, Kirsten will make her way to her room. After that interview, the paladin has much to think about and will take some time in meditation and prayer before the others return.

Conner
Saturday August 18th, 2007 11:47:31 AM

Conner escorts Kirsten back to the apartments. He does not press her for details of her meeting but gladly listens if she offers any details.

On arriving back at their abode he announces his intention of visiting the catacombs. "Been a few things I've wanted to pick up for a while" he says.

A Tiring Day of Investigation (DM JohnP)
Saturday August 18th, 2007 11:13:38 PM

Conner and Kirsten quietly converse in the apartment, trying not to disrupt Edmund's work.

Over in Rogue Quarter, the rest of the Mithril order are conversing with a former scullery maid. She looks around, perhaps trying to see if any of her neighbours are watching, but Mira's words were very persuasive.

"The boss called herself Lurath. Madam Lurath, if you please. Haven't seen her since just before the Guards came to shut the place down. If you find her, I'm still owed my last week's wages. Try looking in Merchant Quarter - she seemed pretty snobby, as if Trade Quarter were beneath her."

The woman turns when a child leans out the door of the small and shabby back apartment, whining something about being hungry. The woman makes a small wave before heading inside.

It's getting late and the others are probably wondering what they have learned. The apartment isn't too far, or they could speak to the other woman here in Rogue Quarter.

DM Note - Still waiting on character sheets from most people.

Kadaz
Sunday August 19th, 2007 5:27:44 PM

"While we're here, let's follow up on the other woman who lives nearby, then consider how to find this Madam Lurath. Maybe the person in charge can shed some light on the situation." Kadaz offers his opinion while looking at Birdie, checking for any uneasiness in the dog.

Arm
Monday August 20th, 2007 6:00:47 AM

Arm thanks the woman for her time, then follows her in to inquire the amount of her lost week's wages. He then gives her 2gp, saying, "For your kindness, m'lady. Buy your child and yourself some fresh food, if it pleases you.".

Once outside again, he says to Kadaz, "I agree. Let us check out this other woman...at the least to see if she is still around. If she is, we can decide at that point if we should pursue it at that time. By the way, I think we need to keep a closer eye on Birdie...if they find out about his sensitivity to them, he could become their primary target."

Shadow  d20+2=18 d20+7=18
Monday August 20th, 2007 6:24:13 AM

Shadow remains in the back of the group trying to tie things together without luck. Other than the facts that some people have no address which would indicate replacement by the dopplegangers. While the group talks to the lady, Shadow is trying to make sure there are no interested bystanders.

After the woman enters her abode Shadow says, "It is getting late and we should be getting back soon, but we could check out this last one though."

Thar will maintain his role if shadowing the party. As of yet, it appears no one has become overly interested in them, but time will tell if that changes. Of course, being dirty and smelly will get old after a while, and he is starting to look forward to a bath at the apartment. Of course, his companions will likely appreciate him getting one too once they finish their interviews.

Mira  d20=17

Mira waits while her friends pay their respects to the maid, then thanks her in turn for her information. Mira's eyes follow Arm when he gives the woman the coins. She then takes the woman's hands in both hers, before adding, "if you remember anything else, leave a message for the Mirthril Order at Sampson's Tavern.

Releasing the woman's hands, Mira steps quickly to catch up to Arm. Linking an arm around the bard's waist, she gives him a squeeze. "That was very good of you, sweetheart!" Glancing back at her friends she whispers, "not only was it a kindness in her circumstances, but it may garner us her good opinion."

Then aloud, the sorcerer muses, "Madam Luthor? Trade Quarter? Anyone heard of her?"

More Investigation (DM JohnP)
Monday August 20th, 2007 11:18:35 PM

When the party goes by the tailor's shop to speak with the other woman, they find that it is clsoed for the evening. A few questions, though, directs them to a local tavern where they fidn the woman having a meal with a beefy man. Once he notices their interest in his dinner companion, the man moves to stand but she restrains him. After Arm asks, the woman agrees that the boss at the house was called "Madame Lurath" but she thought that the woman lived in Guild Quarter.

Meanwhile, Conner and Kirsten are starting to wonder what might be delaying the others. Just before they reach the point of finishing whatever distracting activity they were doing in order not to worry, the others return. Birdie barks with excitement about being back in the apartment, rousing Edmund from his studies.

There's ample time to share what everyone has learned.

Arm
Tuesday August 21st, 2007 5:59:53 AM

On the way back, Arm smiles at Mira, squeezes her back and says, "You KNOW I have a soft spot for children, especially those in need. I was alone for a LONG period of time, living off the grace and charity of others, so I can appreciate their situation. Perhaps, if we hit a big haul one day, we can retire from all this and have a family of our own?". With that, he gazes at Mira to gauge her reaction, as he has yet to bring this up to her.

Once back at the apartment, the first thing he does is glance at Birdie to ascertain that his friends there are REALLY his friends. Once satisfied of that, he begins to fill them in on what little information they managed to glean from their excursion.

Shadow
Tuesday August 21st, 2007 6:58:20 AM

Shadow is not sure just how much their information from the day will pan out, but it was necessary. He listens as everyone gets the groups caught up. He will add anything that his group missed, but doubts they will since they really did not find out many things. He worries that they will not find out enough until the dopplegangers strike again and the worries Shadow.

Kadaz
Tuesday August 21st, 2007 7:56:46 AM

Kadaz helps recap the day's activities and findings. "If they are alert, the dopplegangers will know we're tracking them. I believe we need to start keeping watch at night. One of us should always be awake, with Birdie close at hand. I volunteer for a watch. Who else?"

Thar
Tuesday August 21st, 2007 9:55:39 AM

Thar, glad to be back and looking forward to a shower, listens to the rest of the reports. Once everyone completes their feedback, he adds "I didn't see anyone following us, so that's a good sign for now."

To Kadaz, he says "Good idea Kadaz, I'll take a watch too. Let me get a quick bath and just put me into one of the watch slots."

Seeing that Ed had finished his studies and knowing that his friend likes to discuss his work, Thar will grab a bite to eat and (after bathing), will ask Ed how his studies progressed and any new spells he learned.

Mira
Tuesday August 21st, 2007 4:29:59 PM

The sorcerer smiles warmly up at the bard as he tells her a little of his motivations. She jumps a little, startled when he confesses his desire to some day retire and start a family.

The smile is frozen on her face, and her eyes wide behind her little round spectacles, she squeeks out--"really!" The woman than ducks her head down, to hide the flush rising to her cheeks, but grips the bard's waist a little more firmly.

Edmund
Tuesday August 21st, 2007 8:34:53 PM

Happy to have finished the immense amount of work, Edmund displays both of his spellbooks to Thar.

The writing is spidery and thin, written in some sort of goofy language with letters that are not even familiar. It looks as if someone has drawn straight lines all over the place, or perhaps like an impression of a shattered pane of glass. Edmund beams.

"See here," Edmund says, pointing at an especially complex series of lines and dashes. "Polymorph! Imagine the uses!"

Edmund continues to beam at Thar who, if he really is imagining the uses, might be more frightened than encouraged.

A Good Night's Sleep (DM JohnP)
Tuesday August 21st, 2007 11:29:55 PM

After Birdie dances around with excitment ... but no alarm or concern ... everyone relaxes and is able to enjoy the evening meal. Well, except for those who really think of what Edmund might do with a Polymorph spell. Hopefully Kirsten will keep Edmund grounded and not allow the wizard to do anything too extreme.

Supper is the time when news of the day's events are shared. Kirsten, Conner and Edmund listen as Arm and Kadaz relate what they learned. Everyone is wondering, though, why Kirsten was summoned until someone actually asks.

After sharing tales, it is time for sleep. Thar and the others agree with Kadaz's suggestion of standing guard during the night. By morning, most people are eager to greet the day and continue to investigate.

DM Request - I need character sheets. In case you haven't guessed, you're going to be spinning your wheels with the investigation until I get sheets.

Can everyone who has sent me a character sheet include a note saying so in their post tomorrow? My ISP's mail server has been really wonky lately ... I sometimes get mail a week late, so that may be the reason.

Arm
Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 6:02:51 AM

After Arm finishes his recap, he excuses himself, "I fear I am not up to taking a watch at the moment, but I shall in the future. If you need me, I'll be in our room...Mira, can you help me find something, love?".

If she follows him into their room, he sits her down on the bed and takes both her hands in his, saying, "Has what I said troubled you, dearest? I truly hope not, and I fear I spoke out of turn. I was merely musing on the prospect, as it's quite possible with our adventuring careers that we may NEVER see a child. As I'm sure you're aware, it wouldn't be prudent to have one while we are still actively adventuring, what with us putting our lives on the line virtually every moment of the day. However, if the chance arrives that I CAN accomodate a child, I'd rather no one other than you to have as my partner.". Flushing a bit himself, he bows his head as he waits for Mira's answer.

Arm and Mira's little drama hasn't escaped notice, but Kadaz feels its best not to comment on their interaction. Let them figure it out first, then comment when they announce their decision.

Mira
Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 3:33:25 PM

Suspicious about the bard's intentions, Mira none the less does his bidding and follows Arm into the room they share announcing, "you're so organized, I can't imagine that you've misplaced..."

Her hands trapped by his, she casts her eyes down as he speaks his heart. Then it is her turn.

With a sigh Mira tells the bard some of her secrets. She tells him about the illness she had at 14 and the dream that plagued her feverish mind. How when she recovered, her powers made themselves manifest. Then later when she was 18 her foster father revealed what he new of her provenance.*

"You see," she says twisting the silver and green pendant at her neck, "I don't know who, or what, I really am." Withdrawing her hands from his, she tucks them into her sleeves and continues, "I don't really know the source of my magic or if it comes from good or evil!" Turning her body so that the bard can only see her in profile, she whispers, "I can't even think of bringing a child into this Wold until I know more about myself...my character and disposition. If I should pass on bad blood, I could never forgive myself."

Sadness creeps into the sorcerer's heart at the thought that Arm might no longer care for her after her confession.

Edmund
Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 9:02:18 PM

Edmund, freed from the discipline of study, makes himself a nuisance to everyone and sundry by pestering them for information about what has been going on over the past few days. Kadaz and Thar get the majority of the annoyance, whilst Kirsten gets none whatsoever.

"Are you sure that's all," Edmund can be overheard saying to Kadaz for what must be the seventh time. "I know you said so before, but maybe you have remembered something else since I last asked? What about you, Thar?"

More Investigations (DM JohnP)
Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 10:49:14 PM

Thanks, all. My ISP decided to cough up some more mails today, so I have all but two. Mira - your previous mail hasn't shown up, so can you send a revised sheet?

It seems that locating the mysterious Madame Lurath is the matter of the day. However, from what they were told, the woman lived in a part of the City that they aren't too familiar with. The question of how exactly they plan to locate this woman hasn't been decided.

Some people might see what information their contacts in the Guard, the Guild or the justice system possess. Or they might try other means. And, of course, they have to pay attention to security, too. Which means that someone needs to stay with Edmund if he remains within the apartment studying.

Arm
Thursday August 23rd, 2007 5:57:39 AM

At the same time touched and saddened by Mira's statements, Arm gathers her up in his arms and holds her close, saying, "My dearest, it matters not to me what you are, it matters what you are to ME! I don't care where your powers came from, and if they should ever do harm to us, well...we'll deal with that when and if the time comes. KNOW THIS, though...I have been smitten by your beauty since the day we met in that tavern, and the years we've been together have done nothing but strengthen my love for you, and NOTHING will ever change that. If we're able to supply a stable life for a child in the future and your questions still go unanswered, would you consider adopting a child from the orphanage?".

OOC: John, I have two possible solutions to the CS issue:

1) every time we send you a new CS, we post it along with our daily post here so you can watch for it and let us know if it doesn't arrive

2) you get an online account (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc.) that you could use exclusively for the CS emails. I've found they're a LOT more reliable than ISP emails

don't mind me, just the rambling thoughts of an old man... ;)

Shadow
Thursday August 23rd, 2007 7:03:25 AM

Shadow is a little tired and will let everyone know that he will stay in if Edmund decides to stay in the apartment one more day.

If not Shadow will join the group in searching out more people from the list, and see if he or the others can come up with any other ideas.

OOC: John, I have sent mine in by two different emails (work and home), hopefully you got them.

Kadaz
Thursday August 23rd, 2007 7:43:20 AM

Kadaz ponders how to track down Madame Lurath. "I have a suggestion. I will talk with the friends I have left in the Guard to see what they might be able to tell me. Can't hurt. I'll go this morning and be back about noon. OK?"

If there are no objections Kadaz and Birdie take off for his old guard post. Along the way he stops to pick up a big bag of pastries. Once at the guard post he makes the pastries available to everyone and then spends a few hours chatting about what's happened in the Guards since he left, Plateau City affairs in general, and his life as an adventurer. The stories about Edmund seem to go over particularly well. He'll eventually work in questions about Madame Lurath and any activities at the house she ran.

Thar
Thursday August 23rd, 2007 11:11:23 AM

To help out with the search, Thar will volunteer to escort whoever is going to go to the justice system. "My church doesn't likely know much about that area, but since we only go out in pairs, I'll go with someone and watch their back while they are gathering information."

"In regards to where to look, I'd say the Guild (Shadow?) and justice system would be a great place to start."

Mira
Thursday August 23rd, 2007 3:29:30 PM

Mira is comforted, but also troubled by the bard's compassion.

"Maybe," she answers weakly. "Maybe. Someday."

Backing out of Arm's embrace, she continues, "before I settle down I should like to find out who my parents were. My birth parents, understand?"

Mira takes one of the bard's hands, "you have me for now, and, I have you. Let's just enjoy each day is it comes, okay?" Mira knows it is small comfort for the tender hearted bard, but it is all she can offer. Moving towards the bedroom door, drawing the half-elf along by the hand she says, "let's join the others. We still have a mystery to solve if we are ever to acquire that place on Helm's Way! We have to find this evasive Madame Lurath and we have to find those records!"

Edmund
Thursday August 23rd, 2007 7:06:44 PM

With nearly everyone leaving, Edmund, returns to his studies, hoping to be done soon, and leaving the pleasant task of choosing someone to guard him to the others.

When Shadow volunteers, Edmund pops out of his room to thank him.

"I might be able to give you wings or something," Edmund says promisingly on the way back to his work.

Kirsten
Thursday August 23rd, 2007 7:12:14 PM

The paladin does not seem so certain on what she wants to do. Should she go with the rest of the party to gather information, or would her skills be better used elsewhere?

In the end, she decides to stay behind in the apartment. If the others need her help, she figures they will ask.

Conner
Thursday August 23rd, 2007 8:31:10 PM

The fighter looks about as the others pair off and head out. He doesn't really favor sitting about the apartment but settles for just that. He retrieves his wet stone and begins the long repetetive task of honing the blade of his sword.

"Schwwk...schwwk...schwwk"

With each stroke, the blade gives up a minute imperfection.

Looking for Madame Lurath (DM JohnP)
Thursday August 23rd, 2007 10:43:19 PM

After some planning in the apartment, everyone heads out into the City in search of Madamae Lurath. Everyone, that is, besides Edmund and those who stay to look after the wizard. Perhaps because of some feeling of responsibility, Kirsten stays in the apartment with her friend. Conner stays, too, although he spends his time sharpening his sword and doesn't say much. The two putter around the apartment in an awkward silence.

Kadaz and Birdie go off to the local Guard post, taking the time to purchase some pastries. Once there, the dwarf finds that Sergeant Tomin is there. Kadaz starts swapping stories, the hours passing by while Birdie dozes on the floor under the table. When he gets around to asking about Madame Lurath, Sergeant Tomin grins at Kadaz.

"So, you and your friends are interested in that place on Helm's Way? Some of the boys thought that they'd seen you around. We tried finding that 'Lurath' woman but never turned up anything. Sure, the staff said that she lived here in Trade Quarter but we couldn't locate her. Maybe she lives someplace more upmarket?"

++++++

Thar and Shadow walk with each other, first going to Thar's church in a rougher section of town. When he asks, Thar isn't surprised to learn that the elders of his church know nothing about the supposed Madame of the House of Red Scarves. The only thing exceptional is that one of the women who work in the soup kitchen comes up to the ranger when she sees Thar.

"Are you still interested in the homeless folks who went missing? If you want, there's someone who has an interesting story to tell. Her name is Lucindelle, at least that's what she answers too. She often comes around for the evening meal, if you want to talk to her."

Later, when the pair go by the Day Office of the Guild, Shadow wonders how he'll do this. Guild rules forbid outsiders from going in. And neither Thar nor Shadow really want Thar to be loitering in the street outside the Guild office.

++++++

That only leaves Mira and Arm, who spend a lot of time in the apartment and street talking about the future. When they get around to it, they don't learn anything about Madame Lurath. Later, when everyone starts trickling back in the afternoon, they compare stories. From the sounds of things, if Madame Lurath even existed, that probably wasn't her real name. And she probably didn't live where her staff thought that she did.

Arm
Friday August 24th, 2007 6:00:48 AM

Arm smiles at Mira and says, "Of course, dearest..we need to take care of the matter at hand first. However, you need only say the word, and I will assist you in any way I can in finding your parents.".

When they return to the common room, they find that most of their group has already left, so he jerks his head toward the door as if to say, "shall we?".

His mood turns a bit foul by the time they return after more fruitless inquiries, however. Flopping down at the table, he puts his head in his hands. While massaging his temples, he says, "This is getting us absolutely NOWHERE...the only thing I can think of is if we go back to the house and search some of the tunnels...perhaps there is either a clue there or some records that the Guard has missed.".

Kadaz
Friday August 24th, 2007 9:14:16 AM

After an enjoyable morning Kadaz thanks Sgt. Tomin for the information. "I knew that wouldn't get past you. We're afraid she's part of something larger, or perhaps knew too much and those behind her have seized her. Thanks for the information."

Kadaz and Birdie walk slowly back home, enjoying the fine day. The get back in midafternoon and share their information with everyone else.

Thar
Friday August 24th, 2007 10:03:12 AM

Standing at the Guild entrance, Thar says in a resigned manner "Well Shadow, it looks like I'm not going to be going in with you. We'll have to risk it for now and I'll head back to the soup kitchen. With luck, I may find that woman Lucindelle this evening. First, I'll go back to the apartment and let them know what I found and what our plans are. Then, I'll go back to the kitchen."

Turning to leave, he pauses, looks back and says "Watch your back, my friend. We're not real popular with some of the nefarious denizens of this town and we're on their hit list. Take care of yourself, OK?"

With that said, he'll briefly go to the apartment and then to the soup kitchen. Once there, he'll bless the food and begin meeting with various parishoners.

All the while he is traveling, he'll watch his back closely, and will make frequent double switches and turnbacks to avoid anyone following him.

Edmund
Friday August 24th, 2007 10:41:16 PM

Spending all of his time studying once again, Edmund feels caught up on what the other members of the Order have been up to thanks to whatever information has been passed along to him. It is clear he is nearing the end of his work, though.

He's never too busy to stop for tea and a snack though, nor does his rigourous work ethic prevent him taking a minimum of two baths per day.

((OOC: How much time has elapsed since Edmund began studying? I think I figured that he would require nine days total. We must be nearing that by now.))

Kirsten
Saturday August 25th, 2007 12:28:23 PM

The paladin remains rather quiet throughout the day, so she does go about cleaning around the apartment as they wait for the others to return with news.

An Evening Home? Or Time for a Walk? (DM JohnP)
Saturday August 25th, 2007 10:55:52 PM

The morning and afternoon drag for Conner and Kirsten as they wait for the others to return from their investigations. People start trickling in and, just before supper, Edmund emerges from his study with an expression that combines exhaustion and elation. He is finally finished scribing all of the scrolls into his spellbooks.

Not much has been learned during the day except, possibly, for something about the missing homeless folks. Thar is planning to head back to the mission for the evening meal when Lucindelle usually turns up. He plans to go on his own but company would probably be appreciated if anyone chose to accompany him. Otherwise, the party has to decide whether they want to eat in or head to Sampsons for the evening meal.

Edmund
Sunday August 26th, 2007 1:55:49 PM

Edmund corners Kadaz when he returns and shows him more spidery scribing from his spellbook.

"See here," Edmund says. "This is for <i>Displacement</i>. It will help you out in a fight, I think. When used on you, it will make you appear to be not where you are, so that anyone attacking you will have a hard time of it. What's more, I don't think there is any possibility of side effects, probably. What do you think?"

Ready to 'help' everyone, Edmund expresses a bit of surprise that the whole thing is not wrapped up by now. "What, you mean you haven't solved the mystery yet? What on earth have you been up to all this time. Paralysed without my assistance, I expect. Well, no fear, I am at your disposal!"

When Edmund is brought up to speed, he will add, "Ah. Well, this calls for some research!" He is very unspecific about what sorts of research, and if asked, will just reply with, "Oh, you know, things and stuff!" It's a good thing he is here to save the day.

Mira
Sunday August 26th, 2007 8:13:02 PM

Mira sits at the big table in the small apartment. She sets her glasses down in front of her and rubs at her eyes until she sees stars behind her closed lids.

Kirsten is puttering about the place, tidying up, but Mira has no mind for fixing up a meal. "I'm for Sampson's" she calls out.

The gold left over from her transaction at the Catacombs would buy a decent bottle of wine...maybe two. That should clear up the sorcerer's headache!

Kadaz
Sunday August 26th, 2007 9:53:01 PM

"Edmund, that's a wonderful idea. However, can we try it out now, in a practice session, before we really need it? Conner, care to try to hit me after Edmund tries out this new spell? This shouldn't take too long. Then we can go to Sampson's."

Assuming Conner and Edmund are willing, Kadaz will accept the spell and start a brief practice session with Conner. If the spell really acts like Edmund claims Conner should be able to tell quickly. And if it doesn't, better to know now than in a battle.

Edmund (2nd, illegal post)
Monday August 27th, 2007 12:57:51 AM

Edmund is willing to practise the spell with Kadaz of course. Presuming Conner obliges, Edmund will speak a few words which seem to blur together in a string of syllables so that one finds it difficult to say what they even were. Leaning forward to touch Kadaz, the spell Displacement will take effect.

Emulating the natural ability of the displacer beast (see the Monster Manual), the subject of this spell appears to be about 2 feet away from its true location. The creature benefits from a 50% miss chance as if it had total concealment. However, unlike actual total concealment, displacement does not prevent enemies from targeting the creature normally. True seeing reveals its true location. (PH 223)

Arm
Monday August 27th, 2007 6:02:03 AM

Arm looks disgustedly at Edmund's chastising of their efforts thusfar, and is on the verge of a scathing comeback when a look from Mira stops him. Seeing that she is stressed as well, he remains silent for the moment. When she mentions Sampson's however, he chimes in, "Yes, I think a meal would be an excellent idea. Perhaps a full stomach will give us a new direction to follow.".

"By Domi! That is a neat trick!"

Shadow
Monday August 27th, 2007 8:42:38 AM

Shadow relaxes a bit when Thar decides not to push for entering the Guild. Once Thar leaves, Shadow will enter the Guild and see what he can find out.

Once he is done he will head back to the apartment with any findings, and let the group know any findings.

"I am for heading over to Sampsons for our meal, but will remain if no one is going."

Once Lucindelle arrives for the evening meal, Thar graciously introduces himself as a local priest and joins her at whatever table she is eating at.

During the meal, he brings up various questions about what she knows concerning the missing homeless people. He tries his best to be diplomatic, but also watches her responses closely.

"I wouldn't mind going out," she mutters quietly.

Sharing Stories (DM JohnP)
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 12:12:46 AM

Earlier in the day, Thar left Shadow outside a well-kept but rather plain building. The man and woman loitering outside kept glancing at the pair until Thar walked off, then they flashed some quick hand signals at Shadow. Once the rogue entered the building, he told the doorkeeper his business and waited for the Day Keeper.

And waited, and waited and waited some more.

Other people entered and left the inner office while Shadow waited, including some who arrived after he did. It was close to supper time before Shadow was ushered into the room. The Day Keeper, a new elf fellow that Shadow hasn't seen before, greets him with a smile.

"So ... you're looking for the former madam of the House of Red Scarves. Good luck is all I can tell you. And may the best rogue win, since she apparently disappeared while owing money to people all over the City."

"Of course, considering how the Guard and Constables are sitting on that house on Helm's Way, it probably has something to do with the doppelgangers, doesn't it? Look, the Guild doesn't care if you help the Constables. Especially in this, since the Guild has a vested interest in keeping the City nice and peaceful. But keep your head down, remember? This could get nasty before it's over."

With that closing bit of advice, the Day Keeper ushers Shadow out. With luck, he can make it back to the apartment in time to have supper with the others.

++++++

Conner and Kadaz have just demonstrated the new spell learned by Edmund when Mira announced her intentions of going to Sampson's for supper. Shortly afterwards, while everyone is still donning their cloaks and outdoor garments, Shadow arrives. The rogue joins his companions as they walk to the neighbourhood tavern.

Sampson's isn't particularly busy this night, just a few locals sitting quietly with food and drinks in front of them. Once the party arrives and seats themselves at the round table in the corner that they usually use, Sampson comes over with a server in tow. He seems to pay particular attention to Arm and Mira, or perhaps that is simply because that pair are closest to where the proprietor is standing.

"How are all of you? We heard terrible things, just terrible ... but then it seemed to be cleared up. Whatever ... anyway, it's good to see all of you back here. Eat up and ask for me if there's anything I can do."

The server quickly and efficiently takes everyone's order, including drinks, and then heads to the kitchens. Kirsten sits quietly, watching and listening to what is said, rather than saying much. Everyone else, though, takes this time to share what they have learned (or not) during the day. Meanwhile, Birdie happily lies curled up under the table.

++++++

Thar cautiously makes his way to the mission. It's not in the best part of the City to start with and the ranger is nervous about the possibility of being attacked by the doppelgangers. Perhaps his precautions were not needed, but Thar does arrive at the mission without incident.

After introducing himself again to the woman who runs the free kitchen, Thar is handed an apron. The woman looks at him, figuring what he might be best at ... fortunately, perhaps, Thar is handed a ladle and positioned by a large pot of thin stew (or thick soup). The homeless that the mission feeds begin arriving shortly afterwards and Thar is kept busy ladling soup into bowls. Not so busy, though, that he can't watch for Lucindelle.

Finally, well after the initial rush have been served and have left, he spots a woman matching the description entering the dining area. The woman is clearly mentally disturbed, making repetitive gestures with her hands and seeming to interact, even speaking quietly, with one or more entities that can't be seen. When she approaches Thar with an outstretched bowl, he tries speaking with her. Lucindelle, if it is her, jerks her head away and avoids looking at Thar. She maintains that affected posture, head deliberately turned away from the ranger, while she makes her way to a table. Once she is seated, Thar watches her eat and realizes that she has incredibly good table manners. The ranger-cleric figures that he has to formulate a better way of approaching the woman.

Arm
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 5:56:23 AM

Arm is struck with a bolt of insight, and pulls Sampson to the side after he takes their orders. He then asks him if HE has heard anything about the missing homeless or their mysterious quarry. Hoping that he may have overheard something, he waits patiently for an answer.

Kadaz
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 6:55:38 AM

Kadaz has a new-found admiration for Edmund's usefulness. "Stick close to me in fight, kid. You and I are going places. What else do you have in that book of yours?"

Shadow
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 7:57:16 AM

Shadow joins his companions at the meal at Sampson's physically, but his mind if at work on the issue at hand. He misses most of the conversation as he quietly contemplates the days events.

Thar ail Baerer
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 9:50:57 AM

Surprised at the woman's exceptional manners, Thar thinks for a moment and tries to understand what could have happened to her. "Maybe she was affected by some spell or she is mentally disturbed?" he muses to himself.

Deciding that he needs to take more direct action, Thar finds a replacement for himself at the ladle and removes his apron.

Getting some food for himself, he moves slowly over to the woman's table and joins her. He doesn't say anything to her directly, but occasionally mumbles (loud enough for her to hear, but not enough for anyone else to hear) various nonsensical words to himself. He won't look at her either, but does use the table manners he was taught from an early age. He'll wait for her to make some sort of reaction to his behavior.

Kirsten
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 11:26:33 AM

Kirsten quietly eats her meal and listens as the others speak. She doesn't have much to say, really, and is content to merely observe for now.

Mira
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 7:02:45 PM

Mira orders the daily special, trusting that the cook knows what he or she is about. She orders a bottle of wine, which she shares with her companions, and then another, intent on getting pleasantly sauced.

Edmund
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 7:59:34 PM

Edmund takes the time over dinner to inform Kadaz of some of the things he can do.

"Well, I can make you fly for starts," he says. "And I can make you invisible, such that even if you attack, you remain invisible. I can protect you in a variety of ways, or make it so that you can move faster, or practically ensure you'll not miss when you swing your axe. If you would like, I can even turn you into something else--reversible, of course--like a Lion, or a Giant Eagle, or a Hippogriff!"

Edmund digs into his pork pie, wolfing it down with abandon, but still carrying on with Kadaz. "Plenty of things, and of course you could combine a few. Invisible and Flying, for example. Should make your a force to be reckoned with--not that you aren't so already."

Conner
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 9:08:51 PM

Conner listens in as Edmund explains in great detail just what magic he can invoke. Although impressed with the displacement spell cast earlier, Conner cannot help but be concerned about the notion of turning Kadaz into anything other than the short, taciturn dwarf that he is.

The fighter catches the eye of a serving girl and holds up his empty mug to indicate his need for more ale. "More ale Kadaz?" he asks the guardsman.

Two Different Suppers (DM JohnP)
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 11:05:40 PM

Everyone but Thar is relaxing at Sampson's, enjoying the good food, ale and companionship. Even if most are relatively quiet, the shared stories are a good way to bond and strengthen the group. Plotting and tactical planning goes on, as well, as Conner and Kadaz, and the others who rely on strength of arm, consider how Edmund can now aid them. Perhaps the wizard won't have to gamble on his wondrous rod so often?

During the evening, Arm thinks to ask Sampson if he knows anything about the Madam Lurath or the missing homeless. The proprietor of the tavern rubs his chin before replying.

"Ahh ... what do you want with Lurath? She isn't owing you money, too, is she? My best wine suppliers got stuck with some overdue accounts that they'll probably never get paid for. Made things tough for me, since the suppliers need cash up front or quick payment. Believe me, you don't want to cross some of the folks in the tavern and inn supply business here in town ... if you know what I mean. They're looking for Lurath, from what I hear, and it's like she simply disappeared."

"As for the homeless ... well, Bobby the new busboy might be able to help you. He knows a lot of the refugees from Floating City, and a lot of them are still on the street. I'll have him stop by."

With that, Sampson heads back to behind the bar where he begins polishing glasses. A short while later, the slight human man that you vaguely remembers comes from the kitchen and Sampson speaks to him. The man looks over at you, then approaches Arm. He is twisting his apron in his hands as he speaks to the bard.

"You wanted to know something about missing people? I don't know much about that, really. Some of my friends aren't around anymore but they probably went back to the Float. If you really want, there's a kitchen run by a small temple over to Rogue Quarter - they serve food and seem to know most of the people who live on the streets. Is there anything else?"

++++++

Meanwhile, Thar is trying the food that he served. It's pretty good actually, soup being one of those things that is generally improved by being made in big batches and simmered for a long time. He is sitting at the same table as Lucindelle. The woman continues to deliberately look away from him but she does occasionally sneak some glances at Thar. The only words that she utters are a request to pass the pepper.

DM Note - I should have been clearer. Thar's initial Diplomacy roll wasn't enough to shift her attitude towards Thar. You can try again, possibly aided by relevant information about Lucindelle that Thar might gain by asking around ...

Arm
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 5:58:06 AM

Arm thanks Sampson and returns to his seat next to Mira. Trying his best to ignore the Kadaz-Edmund mutual admiration society, he mumbles to Mira, "Wonderful...Ed's got a groupie.".

When the busboy comes over and tells what he knows, Arm thanks him and presses a gold piece into his palm, saying, "That's all for now, my good man...something for your troubles.". He then discusses what Sampson said with the group as well, "It seems that she is going to be harder to find than virtue in an orc clan..there are MANY people who would like her head to adorn their mantle, I'd wager. Perhaps we should contact our friends in the Float and see if they can provide some information for us. I'm also thinking that since things are too warm for Lurath here, she may have gone there as well.".

Shadow
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 6:24:03 AM

"We should also check out this kitchen he talked about. Might provide us with a place to start at least." Shadow says to start confirming plans for the next day. He stifles a yawn, "I think I am ready to head to bed, but tomorrow we could at least start there, and we could split up. Some going to the kitchen and some others getting a message to our friends in the Float." Shadow finally suggests as he gets up to head back to the apartment.

After a good nights sleep, which he finds more relaxing now that they are back in their own abode, Shadow rises early and gets his stuff ready for another day of detective work. He will find something to break his fast in the kitchen while he waits for the others to rise.

"I would like to go to the kitchen." He will wiat to see who else is going with him.

Thar  d20+3=16
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 9:22:00 AM

Realizing that he is getting no where with just sitting at the table with the mysterious woman, Thar briefly excuses himself, makin excuses along the line of getting 2nds.

He'll walk over and when in line, will ask some of the servers about Lucindelle.

Once his finishes in line, he'll quickly move to a quiet, out of the way type of spot and cast "Guidance" upon himself, hoping to improve upon his Diplomacy score.

Once he has gathered some information and boosted his diplomacy check with a spell, he'll go sit back down at her table and continue eating. This time, he'll softly introduce himself again and try to be more diplomatic this time.

Diplomacy = 16

Kirsten
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 8:08:17 PM

She listens to what the others have to say, and at the suggestion to split up she nods her head subtly.

"I'll go along to the kitchen," she shrugs. "I might be of some help there."

Edmund
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 8:11:26 PM

Edmund continues to prattle on between bites of pie and gulps of tea, which he puts away as fast as it can be provided him. Oblivious to the sniping of Arm, Edmund tries to form strategies with Kadaz for use in combat situations. Unfortunately, Edmund's lack of combat knowledge is only too obvious. At least the spell information is useful.

"I know you might be worried about Polymorph," he says during a lull in his own conversation, "But really, there is nothing to fear. It's quite easy actually, and there is very little chance of any permanent damage. Besides, there may come a time when being a mouse for a few minutes might save your life, as strange as that sounds."

"I know," Edmund continues, "There's more to learn out there. My teacher was able to disappear and reappear at locations near and far upon command. I need to further my studies a bit, but imagine the possibilities. No more having to walk from place to place, just poof--you're there. It would certainly make things a great deal easier."

He furrows his brow for a moment before continuing, "Of course, there is always a chance you might reappear inside of a wall or something. That can happen."

Edmund gives Kadaz an encouraging smile. "But all of a life is risk anyway, right?" he asks, before shoveling some more pie into his mouth.

Conner
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 11:14:09 PM

The fighter just shakes his head at Edmund's cavalier attitude to risk. "Never heard of nobody gettin' stuck in a wall when they used their own two feet" he grumbles.

Mira
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 11:22:38 PM

Mira pours herself another drink, but when the glass only fills about a third, she brings the bottle up to her eye and peers into its green depths. The sorcerer tries to get noticed by a server, and orders another bottle.

Making a pouty face at Arm, she admonishes the bard, "you've got to give Ed a chance, Arm. It shows good intentions that he thought to spend his time in study to learn a spell that would help others in the party more than himself!"

Then, her smile and bright eyes contradicting her mocking voice, she chides, "and how have you employed your spare time? Have you learned any new songs, or written any poetry?"

Revelations (DM JohnP)
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 11:30:23 PM

DM Note - Doing a bit of time management here to keep everyone on the same timeframe.

Everyone in Sampson's laughs back and forth, particularly since none of the others are certain whether Edmund is deadly earnest or baiting Kadaz. Conner, at least, doesn't plan on letting the wizard put him inside any walls, preferring to rely on his own feet. Mira, for one, appreciates that Edmund is learning magics that might aid the Mithril Order.

Either way, when Arm relates what he learned from the busboy, Kirsten and Shadow both agree with locating this kitchen and learning what they can. Shadow is getting tired, though, and is dreaming of sleeping in his own bed tonight.

Meanwhile, over in Rogue Quarter at the kitchen run by his church, Thar takes the time to ask about Lucindelle. He learns that her family is most often the topic when she speaks, which isn't often. After preparing himself, Thar asks the woman a quiet question. Lucindelle looks up at Thar and briefly smiles.

"Robert? Is that? ... No .. No ... I thought you were Robert, but no. I thought that I found Robert before, but he changed into someone else."

Lucindelle starts collecting her used bowl and utensils, stacking them neatly and carrying them to the bin where the dishwashers will collect them. She speaks to Thar again after doing this.

"You'll tell me if you see Robert, right? I thought that I found him, before, and the girls, too."

Lucindelle begins walking to the street, waiting for Thar to go with her. After going into the street, she glares at anyone who is nearby while walking deeper into Rogue Quarter. Once they're away from the entrance, Lucindelle looks directly at Thar while extending her hand as if she were expecting Thar to take it. When he moves to do so, Lucindelle jabs him with a needle or small dagger.

"Sorry! Sorry! Sometimes the imposters slip if they're hurt suddenly. That's how I learned about them."

"They found me one night, looking like Robert and the girls. Oh, I nearly danced ... especially since they said they had a good place to stay, over in Trade Quarter. They took me back there, a big house with a nice garden. Like our home. Some people that I knew from the mission were there, too, with their families."

"But, later, I realized that is wasn't really Robert and the girls. The one that looked like Robert bumped its foot and ... its face .... it wasn't really Robert. I pretended to go along but I slipped away. The things wanted all of us to go with them, down into the basement, but I slipped out."

"Since then, they've looked for me. I need to go. It's dangerous to think about them and they might be anywhere. If you see one ... they have Robert and the girls someplace, I'm sure of it. If you can save them ... please, send word through the kitchen."

Lucindelle steps away from Thar and moves quickly away. Thar can understand why most people consider Lucindelle to be not entirely sane. But after what he and his companions have seen, Lucindelle's tale might actually be correct.

++++++

Everyone is still at Sampson's when Thar enters the tavern. The ranger-cleric sees his companions still at their table and can join them. Birdie looks up and thumps the floor with his tail when he determines that it is Thar who has just entered.

Arm
Thursday August 30th, 2007 5:57:28 AM

Looking a bit chagrined, but choosing to keep the rest of the comments about Ed to himself, Arm says to Mira in a joking manner, "In case you haven't noticed my dear, I've been rather busy lately making sure that you are whom you seem to be and also that we don't end up with daggers in our backs...".

Kadaz
Thursday August 30th, 2007 8:06:02 AM

Kadaz is willing to talk tactics with Edmund, using plates, cups, and pieces of pie to represent them and enemies, moving them back and forth, showing Edmund how not to get caught behind the enemy. Edmund keeps forgetting he is the salt shaker and not the mug of beer, but Kadaz keeps trying. "At the beginning of a big battle, that displacement spell seems like the best thing to case on me, Edmund. And anyone else in the front line, too." Kadaz then settles in on his pie, also.

Shadow
Thursday August 30th, 2007 8:18:46 AM

Shadow says to start confirming plans for the next day.

"I would like to go to the kitchen." He will wiat to see who else is going with him

Thar
Thursday August 30th, 2007 10:48:10 AM

When he enters Sampsons and sees his companions, Thar takes a seat, orders a quick drink and rests for a few moments. He bandages up his finger briefly and shakes his head at the woman's behavior.

Once comfortable, he begins relaying his conversation with the mysterious woman and says "I think she may be a key lead to our conondrum. The house she talked about may be something similar to what we're after and there's something suspicous about the fact that they wanted her to join them in the basement. Any thoughts on our next action?"

Kirsten
Thursday August 30th, 2007 2:36:20 PM

The paladin greets Thar as he arrives, and then listens to what he had found out. If no one else does, she will explain their plans of splitting up tomorrow and investigating more.

By this time, she is rather tired, and looks forward to a good night's sleep.

Mira
Thursday August 30th, 2007 4:24:53 PM

Mira enjoys Kadaz's attempt at teaching combat strategy to Edmund. "I've got some new tricks up my sleeve too, including an order from the Catacombs that should arrive soon enough!"

When Thar shows up, and shares what he has learned, Mira sobers up pretty quickly, and shoots out questions. "Do you think you could find this place again Thar?" Turning to her companions, she continues, "how do you all feel about a little night time exploration? These imposters seem to be more active at night, then during the day."

Rising up from her chair, her eyes flashing, the sorcerer makes to leave the tavern, announcing excitedly, "Lets go!"

Edmund
Thursday August 30th, 2007 6:25:22 PM

After nearling tipping over Kadaz's brew during their tactical planning, and after upsetting the salt shaker several times, Edmund feels he has a grasp on battle strategy. "Why, that's easy!" he exclaims.

He's only too ready to head out with Mira and the others for the night. "Night-time is the best time for exploration, after all," he remarks. "Much harder to be found out!"

Conner
Thursday August 30th, 2007 8:34:40 PM

"I suggest we visit Helm's Way and further explore the passageways and basement beneath."

Hey! Let's All Go Exploring! (DM JohnP)
Friday August 31st, 2007 12:00:21 AM

After Thar arrives, Kadaz and Edmund keep up their discussion of tactics and spell use. Everyone else keeps their drinks, small valuables and anything that would be stained by spills carefulyl away from the pair of tacticians.

Thar's report about what he learned from Lucindelle sparks some interest, particularly from Shadow and Kirsten. Finally, someone compares stories and realizes that the place that Thar just came from is the place that Sampson had been talking about. Still, a return trip in the morning might be worthwhile.

Someone (Mira) comes up with the idea of exploring. In the dark. When body-snatching imposters might be lurking outside. Strangely, Edmund displays uncharacteristic enthusiasm for this adventure, which causes some others to wonder if the wizard has been "replaced". But Birdie is still quietly gnawing on a bone under the table, so maybe it's just the drinks talking. Of course, Conner agrees with the two arcane spellcasters.

Conner, Mira and Edmund stand up and prepare to go outside. The others might join them or attempt to talk them out of whatever has gripped their imaginations.

DM Note - I will be out of town tomorrow night, and not back until Monday (when we're supposed to be doing tabletop). If Scott (or someone else) wants to do a DM post for Friday night (or the weekened), I'd appreciate it.

Arm
Friday August 31st, 2007 5:58:33 AM

Yawning loudly but not wanting his beloved to go on without him, Arm rises as well. As they head for the door, he says, "Yes, perhaps we SHOULD try a bit of nighttime adventure...that could be why we've been running into dead ends thusfar..".

Kadaz
Friday August 31st, 2007 8:05:02 AM

"I'm up for adventuring right now, after all, it's never truly dark for me" the dwarf adds in. "However I want to remind everyone about my test for a doppleganger substitute. If I say a number to you, make sure you add 2 to it and say it back to me. Otherwise I'm going to assume you've been replaced. Got that?" Kadaz gathers up his arms and armor and gets ready for some action.

Shadow
Friday August 31st, 2007 8:34:41 AM

"Kadaz, that sounds like a good idea, some type of code to make sure everyone knows it really is us." Shadow quietly says to the dwarf.

Thar
Friday August 31st, 2007 11:19:37 AM

Smiling at the thought of some good old fashioned exploration, Thar adds "A nighttime adventure sounds like a good place to start. If the woman I met described the same building as you learned of, then we may have some luck finding something out."

To Kadaz, he says "Thanks for reminding me of the rule. That's a nice simple way for us to check each other out."

After standing, he waits for the others to complete their preparation and he readies himself to go.

Edmund
Friday August 31st, 2007 11:49:30 PM

Edmund grins a bit at Kadaz's suggestion. "Now that sounds perfect!"

Thinking for a moment, he decides to try it out. "So, this is what... the fourteenth time we've done some exploring at night, right Kadaz?"

With a wink, Edmund checks to see he has his rod at his side. Thus prepared, he stands ready for whatever awaits them.

Kirsten
Saturday September 1st, 2007 2:22:22 PM

At first, the paladin hesitates about taking on this nighttime adventure. After a moment, however, Kirsten merely shrugs.

"I suppose a little nighttime exploring can't be that bad," she mutters, mostly to herself.

Kadaz
Saturday September 1st, 2007 6:50:25 PM

"It had better be or I'll hit you 16 times with my axe" the fighter replies, grinning a little, but more than ready to bash someone.

Going Out at Night (DM Post - ADM Scott)
Sunday September 2nd, 2007 10:27:51 AM

The group has decided to head out this evening to gather more infromation or perhaps to catch the shape stealers by surprise.

OOC: Need to know who, where, and what the group is doing specifically, so that our new DM will have all that information for when he takes over. Thank you John for all your hard work.

Thar
Sunday September 2nd, 2007 2:11:18 PM

Thar will wait for everyone to leave Sampsons and says "So are we all going to the same place? I assume we're going to check out the house that we've been discussing."

"They may have lookouts posted by the house or be waiting for someone to come by, so we may want to have 1 or 2 of us go ahead and scout it out. Shadow, do you feel like doing some recon? Mira/Ed = Could you make us invisible and we can make sure that the area is clear around the house and then we at least have a batter chance of surprising them. What does everyone think? I'm not much of a tactician, but am just sharing some ideas..."

Arm
Monday September 3rd, 2007 10:22:17 AM

Arm puts his hand on Mira's shoulder and says, "Wherever she goes, I go. Let us get going, then.".

Kadaz
Monday September 3rd, 2007 10:30:49 AM

"We now have two pieces of information pointing to the same house. We need to check it out. Having Shadow scout it out makes sense. But could he have that message spell so he can call for help if he needs it? And I bet he'd appreciate being invisible. The rest of us will be about a block behind, ready to come in."

Kadaz presents his plan. He waits for the others to modify it.

Kirsten
Monday September 3rd, 2007 8:12:29 PM

The paladin looks down at her shiny paladin-armor, then back towards the others.

"I'm no good for scouting," she says. "So I will follow behind with the rest of us. I think the message spell would be a good idea, and being invisible will be even better."

Edmund
Monday September 3rd, 2007 11:38:14 PM

Edmund looks a bit uncomfortable at all this talk of invisibility.

"Erm," he puts in before anyone else can request invsibility, "I can only cast it once today, I'm afraid. Tomorrow, that is a different story. Tomorrow I can cast it all you want. But not today. Today, I can cast it exactly once."

Looking around at the rest of the [i]Order[/u] sheepishly, Edmund asks, "So, who wants to be the lucky invisible one?"

Arm
Tuesday September 4th, 2007 5:58:44 AM

Looking with distaste at Edmund, Arm is thankful that he is not going to be among the advanced party, but at the same time is worried about whomever it is that will partake of his spell, hoping that he will get it right and not mix it up with his new polymorphing experiments.

Conner
Tuesday September 4th, 2007 7:41:43 AM

"Best put it on Shadow or Thar if they're going ahead. The rest of us better be in close support..." the fighter's words trail off as he ponders the wisdom of splitting up.

Thar
Tuesday September 4th, 2007 9:13:50 AM

"Well Ed, I'd say Shadow is the best one for becoming invisible. He's a better scout than I am and I'll stay in the point position for the second group that follows," Thar responds.

Edmund
Tuesday September 4th, 2007 12:05:01 PM

At the suggestion to cast Invisibility on Shadow, Edmund nods. "Okay, Shadow it is," he says. "But, we should wait until we are nearly there. It will only last for about seven minutes or so."

Kadaz
Tuesday September 4th, 2007 5:40:03 PM

"Let's get close enough for Shadow to look around a corner, then cast the message spell on several of us, then invisibility on him."

Kadaz leads the party off towards their destination, sure that the others are on board with the plan.

Mira
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 12:10:30 AM

"Don't worry about invisibility magic!" Mira tells the group, "I've enought spells to go 'round, and though they don't last much longer than Ed's, I can cast so that the effect doesn't end when you get into combat!"

Heading into the City Night (DM JohnP)
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 12:11:56 AM

Everyone heads out into the dark night. Of course, some seem to be convincing themselves that this is the proper method of investigation but ... really ... what could possibly go wrong?

The walk through the night streets of Trade Quarter are quiet. It's the time of night that all sensible people are home in bed. But it does allow the Mithril Order to reach the garden, or small park, behind the house on Helm's Way without too much trouble. The small pond in the centre of the park is still although someone once hears a frog or other small animal splash into the water. Strangely, the park isn't as deserted as the streets until someone remembers that the Temple of Caeroldra is on the opposite side. Still, the house that the Mithril Order is interested in is set in a dark alcove that shelters what they plan to do.

After a short period, Kadaz finds the secret door.

TRADE QUARTER

DM Note - Folks ... I apologize up front, but this week is going to be a little slim on DM posts. I'm trying to get the game into a good point for transfer to Jim Webber and also finish the Silk Tap game.

Edmund
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 3:56:39 AM

When they arrive Edmund pauses, looking at the rest of the others. "Well, here we are. My Greater invisibility will also cover one of you whether you attack or not. But only one, and it will only last for just over a minute. So unless we are fighting, I'm going to hold off on that. As for the normal sort of invisibility, who's it to be? Shadow, I suppose?"

If Shadow agrees, Edmund will cast Invisibility on him, rendering Shadow invisible for seven minutes.

Arm  d20+7=19 d20+13=29
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 5:54:00 AM

Ever watchful, Arm takes a good look (and listen) around to see if they are being observed (spot=19, listen=29), then whispers to Mira, "I hope this brings us more results than our recent attempts..I tire of getting nowhere.". He will then pay close attention to the advance scouts, volunteering to be a recipient of the message spell so he can listen in.

Kadaz
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 7:22:27 AM

"Yes Edmund, it should be Shadow. He will be the one sneaking in there. And I'll take one of those message spells as well, please."

Thar  d20+12=25 d20+12=13
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 9:27:37 AM

Simply nodding at Ed's plan, Thar waits and then asks Ed for a message spell too.

Once the casting is completed, Thar follows behind Shadow, watching for anything suspicous, while listening for anything out of the ordinary.

Spot = 25
Listen = 13

Kirsten
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 2:47:05 PM

Once they stop outside the house, she pauses with the others. The paladin takes a moment to look around, and watch as Shadow and Thar move forward.

Mira
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 7:30:38 PM

When Ed casts his magic and Shadow goes forth, Mira stands ready with her magic. Should any of the party be required to follow the rogue where he is going, she will cast Invisibility* on that individual. "Remember!" she admonishes, "I can't make you more quiet, but you will surprise your enemy just the same!"

DM Sanity and player info:

*Invisibility-8 minutes-attack modifier 2(squared) melee and ranged (table 8-5 p. 151 PHB, and AC modifer (see Concealment p. 152 PHB)(OOC: This spell will be cast on the first member of the Mithril Order who mentions a move to follow Shadow in their post-Carla)

"I'll take one of those invisibility spells Mira" the fighter says. "I'd rather stay close to shadow then support him from too far away."

If the mage agrees, an invisible Conner will make his way towards the back of the house and the secret door they discovered on an earlier trip. [Move Silently = 17]

Edmund (2nd, illegal post)
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 10:41:05 PM

Edmund uses up his first cast of Message, targetting everyone except for Mira--under the impression she has her own Message at the ready. If she does not, he will ask her if she wants in on the Message Ring, and will use his second (and last) cast of Message to include her if she so desires.

((Message [PH 253]: Are we still playing fast and loose, where everyone can speak to everyone else? If not, and we are going by the book, they can talk to Edmund, and Edmund can talk to all of them (potentially relaying messages as a sort of magical operator)--but the rest of the characters cannot talk to each other via Message. PH gives max range of 170 ft, unless blocked by 3ft. of wood or dirt, 1 ft. of stone, 1 in. of metal, or a sheet of lead. Message can go around corners and obstructions if there is a path within range between Ed and the subject. Duration: 70 min.))

Into the Tunnels (DM JohnP)
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 11:14:42 PM

The party pries open the secret door and enters the hidden back staircase of the House on Helm's Way. As planned, several of them are invisible to help them sneak up on any others hiding within the tunnels.

Since he can easily see in the dark, Kadaz leads the way downstairs to the basement and deeper, since this hidden staircase leads to a small sub-basement. After some poking and prodding by Kadaz and Shadow, four tunnels leading away from the house are discovered. All four tunnels are protected by doors that have been secured from this side, preventing anyone from coming up from below. The sub-basement is deep enough that the tunnels have been cut through the soft limestone that lies udner all of the plateaux.

Kadaz studies the tunnels for a moment, or two, and offers up his opinions.

When the door to the first tunnel is opened, a slight hint of sewage and waste comes from it. The tunnel is clean and dry without any apparent footprints or other markings. It slopes down away from the sub-basement of the House on Helm's Way.

The second tunnel leads south. A stale odour comes from and it seems to be long disused, considering how thick the spider webs are. It seems to run level, at least close to the sub-basement.

The third tunnel leads east. It may have been used recently, at least in the last several weeks. No odours are apparent and it runs level.

The fourth, and final, tunnel is smaller than all the others. Only Kadaz could walk comfortably through this tunnel although it may open up farther in. Kadaz states that the tunnel descends gradually, like the first one.

Arm
Thursday September 6th, 2007 6:03:35 AM

Arm shifts from one foot to the next, thinking for a moment. He then says quietly, "I think we should try the third tunnel first, as it seems to have seen recent use. Before we do that, however, we need to lock the other doors so that nothing surprises us from behind.".

Kadaz
Thursday September 6th, 2007 7:34:46 AM

"I am willing to lead the line into this tunnel, Arm. Though, if I were building an escape route I would certainly make it just my size, like that last tunnel."

Thar  d20+12=16 d20+12=18 d20+10=28
Thursday September 6th, 2007 12:19:01 PM

Thar will take his place in line, most likely behind Kadaz and Shadow. He'll draw his short swords and prepare himself for whatever may occur.

He'll continue trying to spot any traps or problem areas that they come towards.

Remembering that not everyone can see, he adds "Should we take a light with us or have someone cast 'light' on a small stone for someone to carry?"

Spot = 16
Listen = 18
Move Sil. = 28

Shadow
Thursday September 6th, 2007 2:31:52 PM

"I suggest we check out the tunnel that seems to be used the most recently, but if not that one thent the smallest one might be one that could possess some interesting things." Shadow suggests out of nowhere (since he is invisible).

Edmund
Thursday September 6th, 2007 6:31:37 PM

Edmund thinks the third tunnel is the most promising, and wastes no time saying so.

"Arm's right," he pipes in, "if that one has been used, it was probably by those imposters."

When mention is made of a light spell, Edmund shakes his head. "Don''t look at me. I could try to cast light, but I'd probably just blow us all up instead. Some things are quite beyond me."

Conner
Thursday September 6th, 2007 8:54:41 PM

The fighter listens to the voices of his companions as they decide which tunnel they should follow. "No sense using light if we still want to be unseen" he comments.

Mira  d20+2=3
Thursday September 6th, 2007 9:17:04 PM

The sorcerer casts the simple spell* upon her short spear and the spear head begins to emit a bright light.

"How's this?" she asks, holding up the light from her place in the middle-back of the que. Adding, "the third tunnel it is!"

*Light-80 min. bright light in a 20 ft. radius, dim for an additional 20 ft. either way.

For good measure, the sorcerer has a look around, but doesn't see a whole heck of alot. (Spot=3)
