The Ancient Coming

The Tree [DM Jerry]
Sunday August 26th, 2007 8:04:56 PM

Athalorn, followed by Aeralia, K'nara, and Brother Bertram quickly head to the Grove, two hours north by foot.

As they approach, the ground begins shaking. Something walks.

Over the top of the last trees, it is sighted.

A 1000' moving tree!

Its branches groan and crack as it moves, roots digging into the ground and releasing with each step. There is a face, so it might be some sort of Treant God. It looks very old. Extremely old.

The first branches start about 100 feet up. The trunk is about 60' in diameter. The circumference of its branches is about 500 feet. The sky darkens overhead as it approaches, walking a straight path south.

It pauses for a second as it approaches the grove. The creature makes a groaning sound and the plants and trees surrounding the grove begin sprouting new branches and growing at an accelerated rate.

It circumvents the grove then and continues south, making a softer groaning sound.

Brother Bertram
Sunday August 26th, 2007 9:25:59 PM

Bertram looks up in awe at the massive creature. He has no idea if it will even take notice but figures its worth trying. "Hail Mighty Father of Trees! Hail King of Culverwood. What brings you to us this day?!"

Athalorn  d20+19=36
Monday August 27th, 2007 3:30:16 AM

The druid stops, awestruck at the sight of the ancient tree. He had never seen anything so enourmous at this before, and when the tree encourages growth in his own grove, he is moved. He tries to remember if he has heard anything of such a being from the elders of the Scared Circle of the Culverwood (Knowledge Nature = 36).

When the tree begins to move towards them, the druid waits with Bertram to speak with the great being, waiting to see if there is a response. He clutches his Culverclove leaf tightly in his hand.

Olana is chewing on a piece of her braid, going over escape drills, wondering what she should buy from the catacombs, and realizes that a few of her fellow adventurers were missing.

"Hey Lian! Where is everyone? A party that excluded elves, or what?"

Drawing a line [DM Jerry]
Monday August 27th, 2007 6:49:30 PM

There is no answer from the great being.

Athalorn has indeed heard of the ancients of the forest. He also knows that they have been asleep since Eberyon's Creation, far before the creation of the Wold, which was the second creation. They did partially awaken when Eberyon awoke a few years ago, but did not leave the lands of the Fey.

Now here an ancient stands, thousands of years old, one of the great spirits that form the personality and the basis for the self-awareness of the forest.

Never has Athalorn seen a being affect nature so quickly, and it appears to be fostering, both neutrality and chaos. It is evident as the forest is much wilder and active in its wake.

It does not stop continuing its march south. Its present course will take it into the Emerald Kingdom and very near the Emerald Castle. If one draws a line, it would also include two other notable points in that direction: Parnoth's Palace, and The Emerald City.

There is an uncanny effect, that is noticed too. When one looks at the huge being, it seems to creep, inches at a time. However, if one looks away for a time, it has moved significantly, racing ahead to the horizon, covering miles in minutes. For such is the magic of the Culverwood of old. Culverwood, which means many things in the Fae language, one of which is "chaos incarnate."

Estimates for how long it will take to get to the edges of the EK and Emerald Castle's location vary from a couple of hours to perhaps a month. It depends on how you are looking or not looking at things.

--------

Back at the castle, everyone seems to be hyper and excited. A strange temptation to emotion and unthinking decisions. Nothing drastic, but noticable to those who watch for such things. It also is nothing that cannot be controlled once one is aware of it.

[Sense Motive check of 25 to notice that something is affecting the emotions in the area.]

Ingrge  d20+1=5
Monday August 27th, 2007 7:30:31 PM

Having finally emerged from his scroll writing and his scrying attempts, The elder elf spends some time familiarizing himself with the new castle and the tunnels and the people who still seem to be pouring in from the countryside. His wife, often away in Emerald City at her jewelry shop seems to crankier than usual, aparently to the increase in elven restrictions being implemented by Parnoth, but Ingrge doesn't sse that much has really changed in that department in the last year and verbally nearly bites her head off at one point, which is very uncharacteristic of him. And then the very next day, they were laughing at Parnoth and the same restrictions they were fuming about the day before.

Brother Bertram
Monday August 27th, 2007 8:31:52 PM

Bertram turns to Athalorn and shrugs sheepishly. "I thought there might be a slim chance it would respond, Friend Athalorn. Do you know anything of such a great creature?"

Milo
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 1:27:25 AM

Other than time spent in the Catacombs transacting business, Milo spends time wandering the halls of their newly constructed castle, becoming intimately familiar with every nook and cranny.

Athalorn
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 3:24:21 AM

The druid moves out of the Ancient tree's path, a hand running through his long hair. He speaks to those who have come with him. "I do, Brother. It is an ancient spirit of the forest, a sentient spirit who has slept since the creation of Eberyron's very creation. The question is, why has it awoken? And if it is heading to Parnoth or the Emerald City, we should follow it."

The druid gives a shrill whistle, a sign for Grawl to follow them from the grove. With that, the druid begins running back to the tower to tell others of what he has seen.

Lian
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 11:28:52 AM

The monk shrugs. "Don't have a clue myself. I've been in the village. They are in need of help."

"The others are likely off getting into trouble."

Digging In [DM Jerry]
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 6:01:14 PM

A few hours later, the ancient of the forest finally arrives at the elven town and the Emerald Castle.

There it stops. Digs in roots. Sways. Almost instantly, as when it travelled, the forest begins to reassert control of the "golf course" adjustments that Parnoth made. It does not cover over roads, but it does seem to cut down the number of roads to those needed.

An elf comes running to the Emerald Castle. "The forest is attacking the master's house! Come help! You must stop it!"

None of the houses near the castle seem to have been attacked. A bit of investigation reveals the house in question is the family estate house of Civilano, one of the more wealthy citizens. His wife runs a bank in Emerald City.

The witch in town comes to look at the thing and comments that it is fortuitous that it arrives two days before a "near double full moon" where the First Moon, Kerracles, is full one night only before the Second Moon, Wardd is full. She mumbles something about prophesy and legend and then stalks off back to her shack.

Olana
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 6:30:55 PM

Olana nods as Lian's suggestion. "I suppose you're right. As for trouble -" she points in the direction of the arriving tree. " - the trees are moving. What in Culverwood's name??"

She sets off toward the great tree.

Brother Bertram
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 7:00:36 PM

Bertram scratches his head thoughtfully for a moment and then stops the witch and asks politely about the legend and prophecy she refered to.

Lian
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 7:35:21 PM

"Moving?" He looks toward the forest. No very alert for being an elf in his own forest.

K'Nara
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 9:05:59 PM

Finally recovering from her shock and awe, K'Nara immediately used her ring to communicate with all of the other Emeralds:

"In case you can't see it yet, there is the Wold's biggest animated tree that has just parked itself near our new headquarters...and I think it's motivating the Culverwood into taking action for itself."

Upon hearing about the banker's house, the leader of the Emerald Dragons sighed.

"Athalorn...is there no way to communicate with this...Great Father Tree...and find out why he...it...has relocated here?" she asked the resident druid, then turned to the others of the group. "Let's go see what the forest is doing to that house. It may give us some insight as to what's going on."

Ingrge  d20+2=3
Tuesday August 28th, 2007 10:44:42 PM

Alternating between mild anger at some little things going on in the castle and a deep set welling of emotion at the sight of the huge tree settling in near the castle Ingrge makes his way out to where the tree is and stops and just stands, as waves of pleasure and saddness and excitement wash over and through his body as he simply stares up at the tree.

(Geesh good thing Ingrge isn't Vulcan)

Milo
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 12:28:54 AM

Hearing the cries of alarm from within the castle, Milo makes his way to the front gates to get a better view of this 'tree.'

Athalorn
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 4:53:09 AM

Unsure if there is any way to speak with the ancient being, Athalorn simply stands and stares at it. He tries again to speak with it, but is sure his voice would not carry to the heights required.

"Great spirit, what brings you to us in these times?"

He smiles at the sight of Parnoth's manicured gardens being transformed back into wild forest. The Elders of the Circle would be pleased to hear about this, he muses to himself.

--------------------

Grawl lumbers off into the woods to rest in some shade.

Lian
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 12:52:36 PM

The monk longs for the days when things were more laid back.
Lian talks into the Emerald Ring, "Knara, were you aware the trees are moving in the forest? Where are you?"

When the Moon is Full [DM Jerry]
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 7:09:35 PM

Olana arrives at the great tree to join Athalorn, K'nara and the rest of the Emerald Dragons.

The canopy is huge, seemingly covering over a quarter of the town in its protective branches.

A intangible feeling of both uncertainty and purpose is becoming more and more pervasive. It is as if the ancient is building up to something.

Brother Bertram catches the witch and inquires of her why she mentioned a prophesy.

She turns and almost as in a trance says,

"When the moon is full,
Not once but twice,
Culverwood will come,
Will claim, will fight.
Then in its victory,
Right the night.

"It is one of the 32 prophesies of Eberyon spoke in his slumber at the end of the first age, when the Gods of Yore were thrown down. The first witch, Wangu, was witness to them, and they are part of our lore."

Athalorn entreats the ancient to explain its purpose here.

It answers. A deep booming voice that is more felt than heard, as its deepness of tone is mostly of a lower frequency than mortal ears can hear.

One word, it utters.

"SOON."

Elves come running from all directions to do as the Emerald Talons are doing--standing and staring.

Overhearing the witch, some nearby elves begin to put her words to music.

"When the moon is full,
Not once but twice,
Culverwood will come,
Will claim, will fight.
Then in its victory,
Right the night."

The chorus swells. Beautiful. Haunting. Mesmorizing.

Olana
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 8:58:13 PM

"Two full moons..." the elf ponders. "Athalorn, when are we due two full moons?"

Kent  d20+2=12
Wednesday August 29th, 2007 10:18:42 PM

Still unable to get control of his emotions, Ingrge begins wandering around touching each of the plants and shrubs that have been freed from Parnoth's touch and control.

Athalorn  d20+19=20
Thursday August 30th, 2007 8:25:19 AM

Turning to Olana he answers, "As the lady says, in two days we will have a near double full moon - but they will not be full on quite the same day. I wonder if this is enough to fulfill the prophecy?"

Emotions are going wild in the druid - the forest itself may be coming alive, and certainly something momentous was due to happen. Maybe the prophecy could be fulfilled?

Knowledge Nature check to know when there will be a double full moon 20

Lian
Thursday August 30th, 2007 11:34:13 AM

Assuming communications are open when the prophesy is told, Lian says, "A Blue Moon! Twice a month. How is it possible with a 21 day month? I've heard stories from the monks when I was very young. Its rare."

Brother Bertram
Thursday August 30th, 2007 1:07:39 PM

Bertram thanks the witch politely and inquires if she knows anything else about the prophecies concerning Culverwood. If not he will relate anything that the others did not hear from the woman.

K'Nara
Thursday August 30th, 2007 6:21:20 PM

In a rather strangled but nonetheless annoyed voice, K'Nara remarked out loud:

"Did I ever tell anyone about how much I hate riddles..?"

She turned to the others.

"Do we have a report on what happened to that...that banker person?" the leader of the Emerald Dragons asked. "We should probably go and check it out ourselves. I get the feeling that the Culverwood is starting to take exception to people that helped to subdue the forest by, um, 'civilizing' the area...but we need to make sure."

If nobody else has done so, K'Nara will go to see what's happened to the home being attacked by the forest.

Milo
Thursday August 30th, 2007 7:59:07 PM

Enjoying a good riddle, Milo listens intently to ths one. However, since it requires some degree of knowledge the halfling doesn't appear to have, his brow quickly furrows in frustration, "Sounds like a history lesson is in order.. or somethin'."

Owha Tafoo Liam [DM Jerry]
Thursday August 30th, 2007 11:40:33 PM

When K'nara gets to the banker's house, she sees quite a sight. Large plant like tenticles or perhaps creeping vines, some 10 feet in diameter are crawling all over the outside of the crushed house, if you prefer to call it a house instead of a cleverly disguised mansion.

The banker and his son are hanging outside from two of these tendrils by their big toes.

The son is conscious and in total shock, though he doesn't look injured. The dad, though is in some sort of unconscious hypnotized state because he keeps repeating over and over,

"I am a fool.
"I am a fool."

He does this in elven, then repeats is in fae.

Quite a little crowd has gathered here too. Some evidently had tried to help the banker as they are gently, but strongly held by some of those same tendrils.

Pieces of house begin to be shredded by the tendrils and a small army of huge maggots come from the south and begin to eat the remains.

If Culverwood has its way, the house will soon be totally gone.

----------

Remember there are two moons folks. One is due to be full one day before the second. As Athalorn said, this will be night after next. (two nights away)

If you wish Milo, I'll give hints for appropriate Knowledge checks.

We have a few that are not posting as they should folks. Let's get after it!

Ingrge  d20+2=11
Friday August 31st, 2007 12:23:10 AM

Lian, not one moon full twice in a month, but both moons being full at the same time.:: he giggles:: "Oh what a glorious time I can hardly control myself. This is such a joyful time. ::chuckles:: Knara, if he is one of Parnoth's bankers he deserves what he gets and "good riddance" I say. LOOK THE TREES AND BUSHES ARE CURED!!!" Oh what a glorious day.

Athalorn
Friday August 31st, 2007 3:17:06 AM

Athalorn takes a look at the house also, overawed by the power the forest has displayed in destroying the building. The druid and the bear then continue walking around the site, happy beyond measure at the wild growth over the trimmed lawns and hedges.

He speaks to the group around him. "Perhaps the prophecy is to be fulfilled soon. If so, what else will the great wood do I wonder?"

Lian
Friday August 31st, 2007 12:26:50 PM

"Ingrge feeling okay?"

(OOC: Are the communication rings on open channel currently?)

Olana
Friday August 31st, 2007 12:41:54 PM

Olana nods at Athalorn's answer, then looks at the tree, trying to put some pieces together. She looks toward Ingrge and envies him. Gone were they days when she could express that much joy. Yes, she'd felt the undercurrents, but being stuck in a box in Harrowed Moon for a little while tended to put the damper on things like that.

Then her attention is back to the tree, and then over her shoulder to the new Talon's castle.

"Milo," she says quietly. "We might have to execute that evacuation plan sooner than we thought.

Brother Bertram
Saturday September 1st, 2007 7:31:09 AM

Learning nothing more from the witch, Bertram tries to figure out a way to save the ones entangled. He quickly realizes the most potent magics he has will no doubt only vex the huge creature, or anger it to an extent that will result in even more death. He hopes Athalorn has more information that might be of help. He does make one decision. He quickly murmurs the words or power that should help to protect the young lad trapped by the large creature.

Ingrge  d20+2=8
Saturday September 1st, 2007 11:10:08 AM

Hearing Lian's question, Ingrge snaps around and looks at the younger elf. For some reason Lian's questions sets him off and he literally barks at him.

"Of course I am feeling fine. Why wouldn't I be? Why don't you just mind your own business and leave me be?"

K'Nara
Sunday September 2nd, 2007 10:12:59 AM

The bladesinger found herself bemused by the situation--the banker and his son weren't truly harmed...but they were also not in positions they wanted to be in.

"It's the revenge of the Culverwood." K'Nara told Ingrge with a nod. "But...how much revenge is the Culverwood entitled to?" She sighed. "I wish there was a definitive way to find out exactly what the Culverwood's intentions are. I love the forest, but Emerald City is also a nice place--well, it's nice enough if you don't have a certain somebody being a tyrannic despot."

After hearing Ingrge vent himself on Lian, the leader of the Emerald Dragons turned to the weapon mage.

"Ingrge--there isn't anything in particular that's bothering you, is there, my friend? You aren't normally so...impatient with others."

Lian
Sunday September 2nd, 2007 3:58:05 PM

The monk stops smiling and steps up to his old friend, face to face.
"You rarely smile anymore! And I don't think I've ever heard you laugh, you old fart! Now, if a friend can't be concerned with one of his old mentors, just let me know!" The monk is fuming.

Still looking at Ingrge, Lian answers Knara's inquiry. "Hundreds of thousands of years I would suspect.

Maybe the trees should see to Parnoth first, though."

"Parnoth has NOT been around for hundreds of thousands of years." K'Nara pointed out to Lian. "However, for as long as that big Green Meanie has been gouging his claws into the Emerald Kingdom, I would imagine that that would be the amount of revenge that the Culverwood is entitled to." The redheaded blade singer caught her bottom lip in her teeth.

"With lots of interest, as well."

Lian
Monday September 3rd, 2007 7:50:58 PM

"I know he hasn't Knara! But Parnoth is not the only one that has ravaged the forest! If this tree is as old as we all think it is, it may have been here while Domi, Alemi, Gargul and the other gods walked. Maybe we should look for guidance from them first? Perhaps they know more of what to expect."

Tuesday September 4th, 2007 12:08:28 PM

The druid continues watching the great tree, and begins having optimistic thoughts as to what the Culverwood might do to Parnoth.

Lian
Tuesday September 4th, 2007 3:14:40 PM

"The ancient tree would be far to old to worry itself with such petty things as revenge. Its going to be something much more surreal and well beyond our minds to comprehend. Let it play out as it will. I, for one, will not be part of destroying this Ancient, if it comes to it." Says the monk, contemplatively.

"Can anyone sense evil or malice?" He Hand of Domi hadn't thought to prepare these spells, which might be of great use at the present time.

DM Jan (sub)
Tuesday September 4th, 2007 4:15:28 PM

Bertram is able to pick up vestiges of shock, via his shield other spell on the banker. All vital, physical signs appear to be okay, but the thoughts cloud his mind. It's not every day a man's house is pulled apart and eaten by grubs, after all.

Culverwood, at least the area around the massive, ancient tree, has become omnipresent. Creatures of flesh and feather, with their nests, and roads, and stony dwellings, are nothing in the face of bark, root, cellulose and chlorophyl, and the power that binds it.
If ever there was a time when the peoples of the Wold felt as though they were merely guests, here - that time is now.

And now, that power is on the move. To the south lies Emerald City and it's population, to the south west - Parnoth's Lair. Are they under threat? Is the former Saryd Tower under threat?

At this moment, the great tree is saying nothing. Would a few pre-emptive moves on behalf of the Dragons be wise, or pure folly?

The full moons are coming.

((Apologies, I can't remember who our ADM is. Who is it, and do we have a copy of the module?))

Athalorn
Tuesday September 4th, 2007 4:29:58 PM

The druid looks in shock at Lian's comments. "Surely you can see this is no evil? This is the Culverwood, the ancient spirit of the forest. No one would dare harm such a thing." He is still awestruck at the being.

"If the being does continue on its journey, Southwards, to the Dragon or the city, perhaps we should be there to greet it?"

Thee Time of Prophesy [DM Jerry]
Tuesday September 4th, 2007 4:51:20 PM

The day passes, and the night and the next day. The night of the first full moon, Kerracles has come. Tomorrow, the second full moon, Wardd will travel the skies.

As the moon rises straight overhead, a croaking sound is heard as the ancient raises its branches to absorb the moonlight. The area around the tree is lit with the pale moonlight, making the forest look all silvery and fae.

A mouth opens in the trunk, some 200 feet above the ground. The tree moves and shimmers. Sounds come out of the mouth, as if moaning. It seems as if the tree has not spoken in millenia. Eventually, his words begin to become clearer.

He speaks in the oldest tongue, that of Fae.

"THEE TIME OF PROPHESY--

IT HAS RIPENED.

THE CREATOR,

EBERYON,

HAS AWAKENED--

BEEN DEFEATED.

DISPERSED,

HE NOW CALLS

OUT TO US.

TEACHES.

CULVENAE REMEMBERS.

ANGER RISES.

CULVENAE WILL TAKE

BACK ITS OWN.

FRIENDS OF CULVENAE--

With these last words, the forest exults with every animal and tree for miles, finding voice and singing wildly.

Friend Lian, I am sorry for my outburst, for some strange reason I was overcome by the nearness of the Ancient and was being pulled hither and yon by my emotions. I seem to have now managed to break free of the enchantment somehow and while I can feel the elation around and through me, it no longer controls me.

Will Save 24

Attempting to avoid the inevitable for days, the elf finally succumbs to the tree's influence. Her eyes become glassy, and she takes out a dagger and begins to sing, while sharpening the blade on stone.

"ANGER RISES...

CULVENAE WILL TAKE

BACK ITS OWN..."

Morning has Broken [DM Jerry]
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 10:34:24 PM

The celebration lasts all night! A true "elven celebration." Magical fae creatures joining, a mixture of body, soul, fae, and moonbeams. A terrible joy is expressed. No one becomes fatiqued, but instead, all are invigorated receiving a +4 circumstance bonus to all to hit, damage, and save rolls for the next 24 hours.

As the morning comes, the celebration wanes into one huge feeling of everything being alright, yet purposeful. Families, released from the heady emotions and charms of the night, head home to rest and sleep. The great tree spreads its branches to absorb the glorius sun and rejuvinate itself.

As the day brightens, the ancient tree takes root in a more permanent way, seemingly content to remain in this location. To stay.

"Wow..." K'Nara said, shaking her head, "...I can't believe I've been dancing all night--and I don't have a hangover."

Was that her imagination, or had Athalorn truly done the Electric Slide..?

Milo
Thursday September 6th, 2007 12:41:28 AM

Seeing that nothing untoward has occurred, Milo is rather pleased, and practically shouting with joy, "Thank you good tree for your gift of life and happiness." The halfling invigorated is a sight, as Milo does hand springs and flips about the rest of the group, before slowing down somewhat, to a mere prance.

Happy to have watched over his partying friends, Lian will rest for a bit, having been awake all night watching.

Athalorn
Thursday September 6th, 2007 12:40:53 PM

The normally calm and oft miserable druid smiles at his own behaviour. "Ah the power nature doth have over us... even Dragons!" And just what was that slide all about? "So friends. What next?"

Brother Bertram
Thursday September 6th, 2007 1:14:08 PM

Bertram slowly begins regaining some control over his emotions, realizing what had happened. He still cant help but fill refreshed despite his dismay at being caught up in the frenzy.

Ingrge
Thursday September 6th, 2007 10:41:05 PM

having enjoyed the evening in a controlled celebratory fashion, Ingrge begins to wonder and then voices his fears and thoughts to K'nara and the others.

Hey Guys and Gals, I am thinking we may have a problem or two or three or Waard knows how many. You remember Parnoth's Lantern? well it controlled beasts that were turned into plants etc. How do you suppose our friend here, indicating the ancient, has effected them?

Olana

Olana looks at the tree, looks at Ingrge, then looks at the tree once more. She still has hiccups from last night's revelries.

"So - hic - do you think all this might have - hic - wakened some of them?"

Gunther
Friday September 7th, 2007 12:56:56 AM

Gunther grins at K'nara...the slight sweat on her brow making her even more attractive. He grabs her up in a loving embrace and gently kisses her neck. "Vhy can't all de nights be like dis?" Mildly composing himself, Gunther wonders what these current events might be leading to.

Lian
Friday September 7th, 2007 12:38:16 PM

The monk is almost casual during the time the tree is near, like nothing odd is happening.
He finds Brusse, the tower ghost, and has a chat. The elf asks if he has ever seen anything of this sort before or even heard of anything this odd.
