DM Kathy Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 12:28:40 AM
When you approach the magic school, Bralin casts a critical eye over the older stonework. It's hard to tell from this distance, but it looks like human work--although quite good, for humans.
Desolute leans casually against the outer wall, surveying the passers-by. They seem like ordinary towsnfolk; if there are any students among them, they are well-disguised.
Harvest produces the letter of introduction, which seems to impress both guards. They spend a little time studying it. "Thing is, Miss," one of the guards explains, "it's still school holidays until the end of the week. Not many staff about yet. We can inquire, though."
Maglant suggests a ruse, and Arminas is quick to take him up on it, telling the guard that his horse has picked up a pebble.
"A pebble?" the guard says, looking concerned. "Oh no. Poor fellow." This last is presumably for Darkfire, whom the guard pats tentatively. He glances at his companion, who shrugs. "I don't suppose there's any harm in letting you use the stable," he says. "You can wait there while we see if there's somebody available to speak with you. The headmistress is away, but perhaps one of the professors..."
As he speaks, he produces a jingling set of keys. It takes him a moment to find the right one. "Gate's usually open," he explains as he unlocks it. "But with the holidays and all, there's fewer folk about. We lock up as a precaution."
He swings the gate open and motions you through. He leads you up the short drive and through a cobbled court in front of the main building. On the other side of the court is a lane, which you follow around to the back of the building. He gestures toward a long, low, half-timber building off to one side. "That's the stables," he says. "You take this poor fellow in there, and tell old Pim to look after him. Pim'll soon set him right.
"I'll go see if there's somebody available to speak to you about this--Itzal, was it? May I have the letter, Miss, to show them? I'll bring it right back."
After being sure you know the way to the stables, the guard departs for the main building.
Looking around, you see a few other buildings besides the stables. One is clearly a greenhouse; another appears to be a wash-house or perhaps a secondary kitchen. There are a few little cottages, which may or may not be occupied, and some other buildings whose function isn't immediately clear. In between are well-kept formal gardens, gravel walkways, and statuary.
Lorth Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 8:00:54 AM
Lorth enters the school yard and takes a look around. Seems neat and quaint he thinks. Good for studying. He waits patiently while the guards go about their business, trying to seem at ease.
Desolute - Sub/Al Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 10:30:37 AM
"Thank you." Desolute smiles and inclines his head to the guard as he passes through the gate at the rear of this little pack of adventuring companions. As they make their way toward the stables, he stops to remove his boot and shake from within and offending stone. He hops upon one foot while pulling his boot back on. Then, much more comfortable now, Desolute wanders off in a direction all his own toward one of the buildings of ill defined function.
Harvest d20+14=32 Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 10:44:31 AM
Harvest Moon looks about with great curiosity. There may be a chance in this place to converse with teachers of magic upon the practice of the art. Such a thing could not help but be edifying.
As she cranes her neck and searches about for trace of any who might be a mage, the brown girl cannot help but notice that the half-orc, Desolute, wanders away on his own. (Spot 32) Might he be up to mischief? Such things are always a possibility. But, on the other hand, it is a base thought to suspect those who have fought by your side. Harvest continues on her way with the rest of the group, following the guard to the stables.
Bralin d20+11=19 d20+7=15 Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 11:39:26 AM
Still looking at the wall, Bralin nods thoughtfully in response to the query of Davros. "Mayhap," he replies. Its all he says, apparently not seeing a need to elaborate.
The guards show the way to the stables, and the dwarf dutifully follows. "Desolute," he remarks pointedly to the half-orc, "T'would be best if we did not arouse the ire of the administration, as we require their cooperation."
The dwarf emphasizes his point by grabbing a handful of the scout's cloak, and redirecting him toward the stable. [Unarmed atk hits ac19, grapple roll 15 - pretty sure thats a failure, so Desolute can avoid if he wants.]
Arminas Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 2:45:38 PM
Arminas thanks the guard:
"You are a kind and good man, thanks."
He leads Darkfire to the stable, and seeks out Pim.
"Greetings Pim, I am Arminas and this is Darkfire. We have been on the road for many days, and the weather I fear may have caused some problem with Darkfire's hooves. I took a pebble out, but it may have bruised his foot. Could you take a look for me?"
Arminas looks around the stable, checking to see if other horses are there. Specifically, he seeks Itzal's horse. Regardless, if other horses are there he will cast 'speak with animals'.
To Pim, he says: "I can speak with the animals, and will ask Darkfire about his hooves. Perhaps I will introduce myself to the other horses as well."
Then, Arminas speaks in the language of horses: "Darkfire, how are your hooves? Do you see Itzal's horse here? (assuming it is, or there are other horses) Is Itzal here? What of the water creature? Has anyone seen a person talk with an invisible or watery creature?"
Malgant Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 4:58:10 PM
Malgant smiles to himself, happy to have made a suggestion that turns out to be helpful. He follows along and listens as Arminas begins talking in horse. What a fabulous talent he thinks. He waits for Arminas to relate any news.
Florin Jadenth Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 8:53:39 PM
Florin follows the others and is glad so far everything is turning out okay. He does try his best to keep a eye on his surroundings and a ear open, "I wonder if that young trouble maker might have a idea we are here. Just curious if it was accident we met him before or not."
Davros Wednesday August 22nd, 2007 10:11:10 PM
"Desolute, if you insist on wandering off, be aware that wizards and their students are likely to have left numerous magic wards in place. When I went to school, it was common for the students to try to play pranks on each other by breaking the magic wards on other student's belongings and taking a single item. The other student would then have to steal his own item back by breaking into the first student's storage trunk. Some of the students became quite skilled at protecting their things."
"Florin, if you didn't know, I told Itzal I intended to speak with his professors. I don't like the magic he has become involved with. It is likely he suspected our destination. What he thinks about it remains to be seen."
DM Kathy Thursday August 23rd, 2007 12:57:24 AM
Inside the stable, Arminas finds Pim, a wizened, white-haired human man. Even after a few minutes in his company, you can tell that he has been around animals all his life and is comfortable around them--and that they seem instinctively to like him in return. With gentle hands he examines Darkfire's hoof. "I don't see any sign of bruising," he says. He runs quick hands up the leg. "No swelling in the tendon. I'd say this handsome fellow is just fine." He gives Darkfire a fond pat.
Arminas, meanwhile, casts a spell to speak to the horses. "My hooves?" Darkfire replies. "Say, who do you think you're talking to? My hooves are perfect, as always!"
There are only a few other horses in the stable, who stare wonderingly at Arminas when he begins to speak their language. They do not know who Itzal is, at first, but when Arminas describes his horse, they know which student he is talking about.
"Oh, him," says one of the horses.
"We don't like him," adds another. Talking to them further, Arminas gets hair-raising stories of tails being set on fire, the ground suddenly becoming slippery under hooves, creatures popping in out of nowhere. Although some of the horses seem uncertain whether Itzal did all of those things. Apparantly, some of the students practice their magic on anything handy, and the school horses are sometimes targeted. The horses hastily add that when students are caught doing such things, they face serious consequences.
They do not, however, recall seeing Itzal talking to anybody invisible.
Desolute, meanwhile, thinks to scout around a bit, but Bralin and Davros, each in his own way, attempt to deter him.
After a few minutes, the guard returns and carefully hands the letter back to Harvest. "Sorry, Miss," he says. "There's nobody who can speak to you just now. I'm to ask you to return at nine of the clock tomorrow morning, if that will suit. Professor Roundtree will be able to see you then." He smiles at you.
Lorth Thursday August 23rd, 2007 8:32:19 AM
Lorth is satisfied with the guards answer. He turns and starts heading out the way he came in. He spends the rest of the day wandering about the city taking in the sights.
Desolute - Sub/Al d20+3=21 Thursday August 23rd, 2007 9:57:05 AM
Desolute slaps away Bralin's grasping hand. The light of rage momentarily burns brightly within his eyes. Then it is banked and dampened to smolder beneath a more urbane facade.
"Do not manhandle me, Dwarf." The words are clipped and overly precise. "You have been warned."
After leaving the school, the half-orc makes his way alone to the nearest tavern. Initially, his reasons run in the direction of cooling his rage. But, as he does, in fact, cool, Desolute begins chatting up the locals, inquiring as to where they students of the nearby school of magic might go to let off steam, where the teachers might go. He visits these places, talking, buying drinks and trying to get a feel for how the locals see this school and whether they might have stories or opinions regarding, specifically, Itzal Jerse or Professor Roundtree. (Gather Info 21)
Harvest Thursday August 23rd, 2007 10:02:23 AM
"Thank you very much for your kindness," Harvest Moon nods to the guard as the group exits the school through the main gate. "Peace be with you."
"I'm sorry," she turns only a few paces out on the road, "but I imagine that you see the students every day as they go in and out of the school. And I was wondering if you might know of Itzal Jerse by reputation or personal acquaintance?"
Bralin Thursday August 23rd, 2007 3:40:11 PM
Bralin is unperturbed by Desolute's threat, although he does mentally move the half-orc into a behavioral category currently headed up by a certain elf ranger.
Nevertheless, the dwarf makes no further attempts. None is necessary, for his comrades are leaving the grounds.
Bralin accompanies them in the return journey, and settles down in the common room of the tavern with an ale and a pipe. The morning is soon enough for more questions.

Malgant Thursday August 23rd, 2007 8:08:52 PM
Malgant was prepared for the possibility that they may be too late in the day to speak to one of the instructors. When that turns out to be the case he is ready for a good night's rest before asking questions of the teachers. in fact it will give them time to plan heir questions as Davros mentions. Malgant chooses to play the devil's advocate and toss some of the less happy ideas rolling around in his head on the table.
" Davros, what questions should we ask indeed is a good question. What if what the Horses said is the basis for how the school is run? (Assuming Arminas relates the horses tales of mistreatment and spell targeting) What if the instructors intentionally pair dangerous familiars with the students to weed out the weak students and see which ones are able to master the familiar and which are not? What if the haughty air of superiority is not just an Itzal trait but the general air of all of the students at the school? What if they feel that they are powerful and mere commoners should bow and scrape before them in awe of the power they wield and that is a taught trait of the school rather than an individual trait of Itzal's? Mind you I have little basis for these thoughts, just the word of the horses in the stable, but why would they mislead us? The boy may not be the actual problem here but just the symptom. I think we may want to hold back some of the more damning questions until after we test the waters tomorrow. It is just a hunch."

Arminas Thursday August 23rd, 2007 8:13:19 PM
Arminas whinnies back to the horses:
"Tell me if he ever hurts you again, I will punish him. Tell me also if you ever see him talk with anyone unseen. Perhaps you could also tell his horse that if he wants to be free of him to let me know."
"Thank you Pim, you are indeed kind. The horses say that Itzal plays cruel jokes on them, in fact many students do. His character is no longer in doubt, at least in my eyes. I will not put up with him again. Sounds like we have to wait until tomorrow, I guess we should go back."
Listening to Malgant, Arminas adds:
"The students are punished if caught mistreating the horses. To me the school must be innocent, or why else punish the students?"
DM Kathy Friday August 24th, 2007 12:20:02 AM Lorth leaves the school and spends the rest of the day wandering the cobbled streets and marketplaces of Rowena. He finds areas of the city that are familiar to him, where he visited while accompanying Remo Treadlefoot. He also finds other areas he doesn't recall seeing before. He is able to note the location of the Temple of Gargul.
Desolute puts in some tavern time near the school and is able to learn a few things. Itzal, it seems, is fond of playing the bigshot, and often orders rounds for everyone in the establishment. He is less fond of paying, and has run up substantial tabs in several of the taverns. Desolute also learns that Professor Roundtree has been teaching at the school for many years, and is generally liked and respected. His specialty seems to be Transmutation.
Harvest asks the guard[?] about Itzal, and receives a shake of the head. "We're normally out here at night," he says. "when the students are abed. Days the gate is usually open and the guardhouse unmanned. We're only here today because it's the holidays."
Arminas warns Pim of the students' habits, and the old stableman nods. "Aye, I know," he says with a sigh. "Most of 'em are good kids, but there's a few in every class..." He shakes his head. "I give 'em what-for if I catch 'em of course, but I don't always catch 'em. Speaking to the horses like you did would sure come in handy."
You depart the school and are able to find accommodations at the Dancing Troll, an adventurers' inn about a quarter-mile from the school. Davros and Maglant discuss what questions to ask the Professor when you meet with him.
The next morning, you head back to the school. There are different guards at the gate, but they admit you readily, apparently forewarned of your coming. In the main building, you are ushered into a small parlor and asked to wait. "The Professor will be with you shortly," the servant says. "Help yourselves to some wine, if you like."
The parlor is very comfortable. The furnishings and decor are of very high quality, but a little worn and obviously "broken in." Chairs and couches are soft, and a few are large enough even for Maglant. Leather-bound books line two walls, their spines creased and their covers obviously well-handled. A low fire burns in the hearth, chasing away the autumn chill. A table near the center of the room holds several clean glasses and a couple of decanters, one containing red liquid, another golden.
Lorth Friday August 24th, 2007 8:20:31 AM
Lorth follows back to the mage school. He stands comfortably in the parlor awaiting their hosts.
Bralin Friday August 24th, 2007 3:25:05 PM
Bralin eyes the decanters. Even the dwarf isn't obtuse enough to believe its an open bar. But the man DID say "help yourself". So, the warrior dutifully pours himself a glass of the red liquid.
He limits himself to one glass. Its filled to the rim, but its only one!
Like Lorth, Bralin remains standing.
Arminas Friday August 24th, 2007 6:08:13 PM
"Ah, white wine."
Arminas pours himself a glass, inhales and sips gently.
Hoisting his glass towards Bralin:
"This white wine has a delicate flavor and aroma, I highly recommend it."
Harvest Saturday August 25th, 2007 7:38:27 AM
"Thank you," Harvest Moon pours herself a small token amount of golden liquid into a glass to acknowledge the hospitality, but she does not drink of the alcoholic spirits. Instead, glass in one hand, she once again fishes the letter from her pouch and presents it to The Professor.
"We have come to inquire about one of your students, Professor Roundtree," begins Harvest Moon. "Itzal Jerse. We wonder whether you may have noticed an unusual increase in his abilities of late. We believe that they may not be his own. Rather, we have seen with our eyes, evidence of an invisible creature with whom he appears to associate. We investigate these things for the sake of public safety."
Desolute - Sub/Al Saturday August 25th, 2007 7:47:28 AM
Desolute picks up a glass and casually pours himself a half glass of the red. Twirling the glass within his hands, he paces the four walls of the room, taking in its style and contents.
Malgant Saturday August 25th, 2007 10:36:29 AM

DM Kathy Sunday August 26th, 2007 11:48:08 PM
You wait for about 15 minutes in the comfortable parlor. Bralin has a very large glass of the red. He finds it flavorful, but the alcohol content is disappointingly low. Desolute also has a glass of the red, and spends some time studying the room. He finds some interesting curios, and his eye is particularly drawn to a 6-inch statue of an elf woman. Her dress gradually shifts in color from green to yellow to light brown and back again.
Arminas tries the white wine, which is crisp and clear. Davros also samples the white, and studies the books on the walls. There is a variety of subjects. He sees several fictional works, along with books on astronomy, farming, tailoring, the Southern Continent, magical theory, candy-making, cosmology, zoology, and knitting.
After about 15 minutes, Professor Roundtree enters. He is a human man of average build, his dark hair greying at the temples. You estimate his age at around 50. He wears scholar's robes, and carries a large stack of books.
"Good morning, good morning!" he calls as he enters. "So sorry to keep you waiting, but we have much to do with the term starting up again in a few days." He sits in a comfortable-looking leather armchair, setting the books on a little table next to it. "Do please sit down," he adds to those of you still standing.
He examines Harvest's letter. "Yes, of course," he says. "Thanden showed this to me yesterday, of course," he says, handing in back. "All in order, I'm sure. Yes, Master Jerse." He sighs. "Well. A challenging student, to say the least. We've had a difficult time getting through to him. He's doing much better in his studies these days, but there's something--" He shakes his head. "I've been teaching at this school for nearly 30 years, and I've come to know a thing or two about students. They just don't turn around that quickly--at least, not without putting in a great deal of hard work, which I've not seen young Master Jerse do. None of the instructors have actually caught him cheating, so we've been reluctant to say too much to his parents."
He frowns at the rest of Harvest's information. "Invisible creature?" he says. "Well. How extrordinary. That would explain much of what has happened, of course, but---do you have any idea what kind of creature? Or why it might be helping him?"
Harvest Monday August 27th, 2007 7:54:33 AM
"That," replies Harvest Moon, "is what we are hoping that you will help us find out. We have seen the home of Itzal Jerse, and there seems little there that might draw such a creature to him. And so we come here, walking back along the path he has taken in life, to see where he and such a creature might have chanced upon each other."
"Perhaps if you could help us to discover When that might lead us to the Where of things. Do you recall when you first noticed the marked improvement in Itzal Jerse's studies? Was it near to an event of any significance? A trip, perhaps. A vacation in which he journeyed home to Jarlwolf."
"Until we learn more, all that we can tell you is that the creature is invisible, though detectable by horses. It has, as far as we can tell, used summoning magic, possibly teleportation as well, and that it is evil."
Lorth Monday August 27th, 2007 8:56:07 AM
Lorth nods in agreement with Harvest's explanation. But other than that he does nothing, except watch the school teachers reaction.
Bralin Monday August 27th, 2007 10:22:07 AM
Having now been asked twice to sit, Bralin gets the point, and finds a chair. He picks a sturdy looking one. Given his platemail, comfort isn't a consideration.
The dwarf does his best to nurse the glass of wine, and listens to the conversation between Harvest and the academic. Thus far, he has no reason to interject. The girl is thinking very clearly this morning.
Desolute Monday August 27th, 2007 3:02:01 PM
The half orc leans up against a book shelf near the corner, pretending to care about what is said. Desolute harbors resentment and anger at the attack by Itzal, but he tempers his blood with the knowledge there will be another day. When the braggart begs for mercy, only then will it be given. He thinks about the elemental's that they fought and thinks back to some child hood fairy tales. Shaking his head, he comes out of his thought pattern and begins to pay attention to what is said. Desolute has the manners to allow the scholar to answer Harvest's wise questions before he asks his own. "Professor Roundtree, is it possible Itzal stumbled upon a secret room or vault that he should not have? How old is this school? I'm sure there are secret's here that abound, no? Say, something that was once trapped and now released by our conundrum? A djinni perhaps?"
Malgant Monday August 27th, 2007 5:04:09 PM
Moving a large chair over near the one in which Bralin sits quietly listening Malgant remembers a few things that he should have asked the dwarf earlier but didn't. As Harvest proceeds with one, logical well thought out tack of finding just what it is that Itzal speaks to Malgant asks Bralin a few questions quietly to try and firm up the tack he would like to take when asking the teacher questions. He quietly speaks to the Dwarf while listening to what HArvest asks and the teachers responses." Bralin, that stone you held out when we fought the summoned creatures, does it help give your priestly powers a boost to control earth creatures? Was that what those humanoid things were? I am thinking that since I heard TWO voices cast summoning spells that one was Itzal abd the other the invisible friend. The humanoids seemed smaller and weaker than the one large abomination so I am guessing those were what Itzal summoned. If we could identify the other creature it may tell us what kind of friend Itzal has, what plane it calls home if it is not from this one. What do you think?"
Arminas Monday August 27th, 2007 5:21:17 PM
"He is cruel to animals!"
Arminas states, believing this in itself will condemn Itzal.
"I spoke with the horses in the stable, and he plays cruel tricks upon them with magic. His own horse has seen him talk with what he calls the 'water creature' on many occasions. The horse senses the evil in the creature."
Florin Jadenth Monday August 27th, 2007 10:33:39 PM
Florin listens to what is being said and stays quiet as he allows the others to speak. He does think over various things, the evil presence in the house he would bet is the invisible "thing" and he would guess personally that it would be using the young man for it's own gains, as most evil things do. However it leaves to find out, how Itzal came about finding said evil thing and what it is getting out of the deal.
(OOC:Sorry for the late posting and missing posts people. My mom went into the hospital and just had surgery today. I was wondering if for atleast a day or two, if someone could rp my char for me. I would be in your debt.)
Davros Sapphiredge Monday August 27th, 2007 10:43:14 PM
Davros finds a comfortable seat. "A pleasure to meet you Professor. Allow me to introduce everyone.(and he does) My first reaction was that the creature could be an imp, but I'm nto sure. Professor, I don't believe anyone has mentioned that Itzal attacked us. True it was a summoning spell and not a direct confrontation, but the intent to harm was there. As for his invisible friend, The next time we see Itzal, I will use a spell to remove the invisibility of the creature from my eyes. Then I will be able to share exactly what his friend is."
"Does the school have an official position in this matter? You say classes are to resume soon, was there any action planned on being taken?"
"Would it be possible for us to see Itzal's room? Maybe we could find some useful clues there."
"I would like to add that I see many intriguing volumes here in your study. Maybe when this investigation is concluded, I could return and study for a bit and make acquaintance with the staff. Would that be alright?"

DM Kathy Tuesday August 28th, 2007 12:04:04 AM
Professor Roundtree is obviously concerned by what you tell him.
"I don't recall a particular incident," he tells Harvest. "Although it seemed to begin shortly after the start of the last term. I can speak to the other instructors, if you like, when more of them return."
He smiles a little at Arminas's indignation. "A true friend to animals, I see," he says. "Unfortunately, the students do 'practice' on the animals from time to time, although they are punished if they are caught. I don't remember Itzal specifically getting into trouble for that, but he certainly might have." He sighs. "Most youngsters, of course, grow out of that cruel phase. But there are always those who don't."
"Students are not allowed to dabble in evil magicks or alienism," he replies to Davros. "Any student caught doing these things would be placed on probation or possibly expelled. Based on what you have told me, I will speak to the Headmistress about putting young Itzal on probation when he returns." He grimaces. "The lad won't like it, of course, and his family is apt to object fairly strenuously. But we cannot allow him to put the other students in jeapordy."
"There are any number of curiosities kept safe at the school," he replies to Desolute. "Most are off-limits to students; a few are available to the most senior students. Itzal Jerse is not among them. Anything with a potential for mischief is protected by wards, though from what you've told me it wouldn't hurt to check on them."
"If you want to see Itzal's room, you may," he says. "Perhaps while you look around there, I will check on the wards of the most likely items and see if anything has been disturbed."
If you are amenable to that plan, he leads you out of the study, down several corridors, up and down various flights of stairs. At last he stops at a wooden door, one of many in this long hallway. He unlocks the door with a large iron key. "Here we are," he says. "Please look around all you need, and wait here for my return. I'll lock up when we leave." He hesitates, then continues. "Students are not allowed to place magical traps in their quarters, but of course many of them do. Have a care." With that, he takes his leave.
Lorth Tuesday August 28th, 2007 8:02:28 AM
Lorth peeks in the room quick but doesn't break the plane of the door. Instead he waits outside of the room as he is not very good at searching and certainly doesn't know how to deal with magical traps.
Harvest d20+14=34 Tuesday August 28th, 2007 9:37:12 AM
"Thank you, Professor Roundtree." Harvest Moon inclines her head before stepping over the threshold and into the room.
"Paladins Lorth and Florin Jandeth, could you inspect this room for traces of evil? It is my understanding that an evil spell may leave lingering remains, and that would surely tell us something."
The brown girl lifts the crest of hair from over her eye, tucking it back behind her ear. She takes in the room, her sharp eyes missing nothing. (Spot 34 /Nat 20. Detect presence of invisible?)
Bralin Tuesday August 28th, 2007 11:04:49 AM
Bralin answers Malgant, also speaking quietly so as not to interrupt Harvest.
"I also heard two voices. Ye are likely correct in that both the boy and his master cast spells.
I have not encountered the humanoid creature before. I suspect the stone ones were earth elementals. The Sphere was gifted to me by the gods. As you possess a focus for Domi's might, The Sphere is mine. Through it, I have been granted some small ability to effect creatures of air and earth."
At this point, Bralin looks away, lost in introspection. "Yet, I have chosen the axe o'er The Chamber, and its power is not strong within me," he murmurs with quiet regret.
--
The audience concluded, the dwarf rises and wordless accompanies his comrades to the boy's room.
"Davros should inspect for magical traps," he offers.

Desolute decides to go back out and search the grounds. He had attempted it before when Bralin and Davros interrupted him. He will attempt not to hold it against them. In some since, they were trying to protect him, the audacity of that thought brings a smile to his face.
Desolute is looking for areas in the earth that may have been recently disturbed, as well as walls that appear too thick for the rooms withen. Anything out of sorts in general.

To Bralin " So you ae able to effect creatures of the earth in a similar way to my turning of undead, interesting. And I do not think you have chosen poorly. Nor do I think that the door to 'The Chamber' as you call it will close on you, not in such a way that you can't one day return and open it again. " At Bralin's words, Malgant waits for Davros to look the room over for traps. He cringes as Harvest just steps into the room. He personally knows and can cast defensive glyphs that would alternately freeze, burn, electrocute, melt, or blast a hole in her and most of those near her, and Domi is not known for such spells. Think what an underachieving, pissed off, spoild mage might be able to ward things with.
Davros Tuesday August 28th, 2007 10:22:54 PM
Davros produces a slender wand from his belt pouch and casts a detect magic spell from it. He examines the doorway for several moments, hopefully holding back anyone from entering until he has done so. If the door is safe, he will begin examining the room, looking for auras as he goes.
Davros sighs as he sees Desolute wander off. It is possible the troubled lad's skills could prove useful in examining the room, but Davros does not deter him from leaving.

Rather than searching the room, Desolate decides to wander about on the grounds. He hasn't been out there long before he sees a small figure approaching. Looking over, he realizes it is a gnome, wearing work clothes and a long apron. His work gloves, the tools in his belt, and the amount of good, rich soil clinging to him suggest that he is a gardener.
"Can I help you there, lad?" he asks cheerfully. "New to the school, are you? Having a look around?"
In Itzal's room, Davros detects several magical auras, most coming from the desk. There is also one by the bed, however.
Arminas searches the room--for now avoiding (I assume) the areas identified by Davros as magical. On the bookshelf he finds several schoolbooks, along with several pages of notes in Itzal's hand.
Harvest also searches the room, and finds no sign of invisible creatures. She does, however, turn up a sheet of paper hidden at the back of one of the dresser drawers. It is a list of names, and next to each name is some slight or insult. Some examples:
"Keela - Called me a weird little boy in front of everybody! Refused to go to the dance with me. Laughs at me with her friends. Rapi - Snitched on me to Tallier. Stole my best quill. Prof. Neddik - Gives all my essays low marks for no reason. Would have failed me if Mum hadn't talked to him."
There's more in the same vein.
Lorth Wednesday August 29th, 2007 7:20:09 AM
Waiting outside the room Lorth's eyes wander about the hall. Seeing nothing that piques his interest he just stands silently, waiting for his friends report on what they have found.
Desolute d20+3=22 Wednesday August 29th, 2007 7:47:21 AM
Somewhat perturbed by the gnomes appearence, Desolute decides to make the best of it. "In fact, yes sir, I am in need of assistance." Desolute holds his hand out and offers the gardener a firm hand shake. "My name is Desolute and I am here with some investigators in regards to Itzal Jerse, perhaps you have heard of him?" Not waiting for a reply, he continues, "The young man has developed a penchant for attacking travelers along the road. He is suspected of having ties with an evil entity. I am out here attempting to discover some folly that he may have over turned while here. Are you aware of any areas that are supposedly off limits to students? Anything that has been recently disturbed by something unknown to you? Basically anything out of the ordinary, like a bird here out of season?" Desolute eyes the man with cold professionalism. He does not want to put the man at unease but does want to get his point across.

" ... if Mum hadn't talked to him ... " she reads so that they all might here.
"We should show this list to Professor Roundtree," she says upon completion of her reading. "To see whether any listed upon this sheet have recently come to any harm or inconvenience."
Arminas Wednesday August 29th, 2007 11:12:27 AM
Arminas produces the pages of hand written notes from Itzal.
"I wonder if these will shed any light?"
He skims through them.
His eyebrows raise when Harvest produces the list.
"Well, it seems he is put upon by many. If I am not already on his list, I expect to be soon. He will learn to respect life, or be removed from it."
Bralin Wednesday August 29th, 2007 2:33:28 PM
Bralin nods at Harvest's logic. "Agreed," he responds to her suggestion about showing the list to the professor.
Arminas earns an eyebrow. "Do you ever tire of threatening death upon those you view with disapproval?" the dwarf asks.

Arminas smiles at the dwarf, and responds:

I was under the impression you like plain and simple talk. Perhaps I was wrong, and simple talk isn't a choice you made."

"It seems we are seeing Itzal's true nature. The more we look the more apparent it becomes. Still I think arresting him would be the more prudent action as opposed to killing him. Harvest, I think it would be a good idea to show the list to Professor Roundtree."

" If those on the list have not been hurt yet they may soon be. Yes I think it might be good to show that list to the teacher. May I look at some of those notes Arminas? maybe together we can make something out of them." Malgant is still in the hall. The small student rooms are small enough without a Minotaur in your way. Besides, he dosn't want to mess with anything until Davros gives the all clear that putting a hoof in the wrong place will not get them all blown to bits.
Harvest 2nd Post Wednesday August 29th, 2007 9:56:17 PM
"Death is the way of things, Arminas Calaelen." Harvest Moon takes the ranger by the elbow and walks with him to look out of the only window in the room. "Gargul meets with everyone in the end. It is his curse and it is his blessing. And yet how much more gratifying while in this mortal existence, to turn a person from the path of evil, than to simply remove that person from the Wold? How much finer to increase the good instead of merely eliminating the evil?"
DM Kathy Thursday August 30th, 2007 12:05:32 AM
Outside, the gnomish gardener shows some surprise at Desolute's introduction. "Well now! That's unexpected. And yet--" he shakes his head. "And yet, there is something about that boy. Aye, I know him. A sullen, disagreeable fellow. Thinks he's better than folk who work for a living." When Desolute asks if he's seen anything odd, he snorts. "Odd! I'd say so! That boy's constantly out here talking to somebody that ain't here. I reported it to the Headmistress, and she said she'd look into it." He glances up at you. "I guess that's what you're here for, then. Anyways, I never saw this person, like I said, but I did hear the boy speak a name. Medonius. I don't know what kind of name that is; there's no Medonius around here that I know of. But that's what the boy said; I heard it plain as plain."
Davros examines the auras that he finds. The single aura by the bed is Conjuration. The auras from the desk are a variety of schools. Being familiar with studen wizards (and having been one himself), Davros thinks the auras may belong to a collection of scrolls being kept in the desk. The trouble is, he can't be sure that all of the auras belong to scrolls without actually searching the desk--which could set off a trap.
Arminas skims through Itzal's class notes, but cannot make head or tail of them.
The other Swords discuss the implications of the list they found. It seems clear that Itzal is determined to remember any slight or insult he received. His purpose for this is not yet clear, but you tend to doubt is is benevolent.

Lorth Thursday August 30th, 2007 7:44:11 AM
Lorth listens to his friends back and forth. He is surprised to hear Bralin's comment on Arminas's threatening demeanor. Almost, every time he speaks he threatens someone Lorth thinks, I would of figured the rest would filter it out like I do. Oh well, he shrugs to himself, content to wait while the investigation continues.
Bralin Thursday August 30th, 2007 10:05:31 AM
Bralin spends about the next 40 seconds staring, without expression or motion, at Arminas.
After which, apparently having made up his mind, his eyes shift to Harvest.
"Aye," the black bearded dwarf answers curtly, and turns, leading the way back to Roundtree's offices. It sure seems like the warrior is tromping and clanking a bit louder than usual, even for him.
Arminas Thursday August 30th, 2007 10:19:19 AM
Arminas lets Harvest lead him to the window, and looking out at the trees in the distance has a calming influence on him.
"Of course you are right, perhaps Itzal may yet be saved. I do not know many nonlethal ways to stop him, save to entangle him in vines. Perhaps I will leave it to you to subdue him. My arrows seek only to kill."
Turning, he sees that Bralin has been offended by his remarks.
"I am sorry, I spoke out of frustration. Of course your words bear wisdom."

It is on this occassion that Desolute is the one surprised by a nuisance. Perhaps I should actually appreciate it when people attempt to help me from now on? That will be tough. "I apologize sir, but I did notcatch your name." Desolute rests his right hand friendly on the gardener's shoulders and leads him back toward the dorm's. "This is what I would like for you to do my new friend. Repeat every word you told me to the other investigators. Especially about the name you had heard and the fact the head mistress should know about this."
Later when everyone is caught up, he asks professor Roundtree if the school mistress mentioned anything about it to him yet?
Desolute will eventually hear about what was found in Itzal's room and he goes to investigate the room himself, "This is the most dangerous part of my work, please stay away from me." He looks toward the group, "More for your safety then anything."
Desolute works his way slowly into Itzal's room, using all his skills, to determine how safe those auras are, once pointed out to him.

As the group bickers about what to do with Ital, should they ever gather any evidence and not just have to deal with him as an attacker, Malgant clears his large throat and tries again to be heard. He increases the volume of his request a notch as well. "Arminas, May I see those note please, and while I am at it the list as well, Harvest. Sometimes there is more to words than meets the eye, not always, but sometimes. " Malgant looks over the papers first with the naked eye, trying to make sense of the notes that were not clear to Arminas. WHen he finishes he hands the papers to Lorth for a moment, and grasps the symbol of Domi that rests on a chain about his neck. He begins to chant in a deep resonating voice. He recites two separte prayers, both are short. When he finishes he asks Lorth for the papers once more, and looks upon hem with new eyes, ones that see magical auras and also read magical text, in case any is hidden in the notes or in the list. Malgant is pretty sure that Davros would have seen any magical writings as an aura when he detected magic, but Malgant wants to be sure. ( Assuming Davros mentioned the aura of summoning that he saw near the bed)Malgant then looks to the aura that Davros mentioned was one of summoning. He looks for any magicly scribed words in or around the aura and if he finds any or is able to see the aura clearly he will make a sketch of hat he sees so that he can review it at a later time. When Desolute arrives, Malgant is impressed by his willingness to attempt to look in the desk. He stands in the doorway, ready to reach out and heal the man should that be required.( Reach is GOOD!!)

"My name is Fazo Tumblebarrow," the gnome replies to Desolute. He hesitates about going in to speak to the others. "I have much to do out here, young sir," he replies. "But if your companions want to speak with me, you can always come out and find me again."
In Itzal's room, Davros is able to determine that all of the auras are [I think] Faint. He pinpoints one as being under the bed. Looking carefully, he sees a leather-bound book lying there.
Maglant examines the list and the class notes. The notes deal with arcane magic, which he is less familiar with. The little he does understand seems to deal with the magical theory behind somatic components. He examines the documents with Detect Magic and Read Magic active, but sees nothing that he didn't see before.
Desolute joins the group in Itzal's room, and carefully examines the places Davros points out to him. All of the auras are associated with something written. Most are scrolls. There is also the leather-bound book under the bed, and a bundle of pages tucked loosely into a portfolio.
Eventually, Professor Roundtree returns. "The wards are still in place," he says. "Wherever young Itzal acquired his 'invisible friend', I don't think it was from any of our items." He glances around. "Are you finished here?" he asks. "Did you find anything?"

"We have found a list, Professor Roundtree," Harvest Moon replies. "On it is contained a list of persons and the grievances that Itzal Jerse has against them. Could you please look at the names and tell us of any that you may recognize."
Harvest bends low to the floor, turning her head so that she might see the book that Davros Sapphiredge had found underneath the bed.
"Also, please think of any that you know who might have come to harm or inconvenience since the time that Itzal Jerse began to improve in his skills of magic."
Her hair falls into her eyes, and with a small white hand, Harvest pushes it away. With a frown, she mulls over just what sort of book a boy might hide beneath his bed.

"Really?" Desolute responds to the gnome gardener. "Please, do inform me what you could have going on that's more important than the safety of a young man and the protection of the other inhabitants here?" Desolute waits for a plausable answer, such as a foal about to be born or some such. If Fazo does not have such a reason, Desolute will ask him again, not so politely to come with him to see the professor.
Desolute looks at the paperwork they produce. He isn't sure if he can remove or disable that kind of a trap, but he will try.
He takes the papers outside into a field so nothing else can be effected and will try again to disable whatever traps may be on them. Then, he will attempt to desipher script on the parchments not understandable to those that should be able to.

"I might ask you," Fazo Tumblebarrow replies testily to Desolute "what ailment your fellow investigators have that they can't come out here, if they want to speak to me. Or, for that matter, why they wouldn't believe you if you told them my information." With that, he returns to his gardening. [And since Desolute has already posted actions inside the building, I'm going to assume he left matters there.]
In Itzal's room, Professor Roundtree examines the list that Harvest gives him. "Oh dear," he says. "This is most disturbing." He reads further. "No," he says slowly, "no, I can't say that these peoples' luck has been any worse than anyone else's. Whatever he has planned for them, he may not have done it yet."
Davros examines the scrolls, and finds them fairly typical for a student mage. [I hadn't really made up a list, but let's say Unseen Servant, Comprehend Languages, Spider Climb, Tenser's Floating Disc, and Glitterdust ].
Desolute takes the papers to a cobbled courtyard [you're in a city; there isn't a field for miles], and attempts to disable any magical traps they may contain. He gives it his best effort, but alas, he is not successful and the papers blow up in his face. Desolute takes 16 points of force damage [no save], and the papers are destroyed.
Professor Roundtree fares rather better with the book Davros hands him, quickly dispelling the nasty surprise in it before it can activate. "This is a spellbook, all right," the professor says, "but it is not his school spellbook. Indeed, some of the spells in here appear to be...." He frowns, and studies the book some more. "These are quite against the rules," he says. He shakes his head sadly. "I must inform the headmistress at once. I believe the boy will have to be expelled.
The portfolio pages have been destroyed, but Professor Roundtree allows Maglant (and anyone else who is interested) to study the illicit spellbook. The spells it contains are summonings, of a highly advanced nature. It's unlikely that a mage Itzal's age would be able to cast them. The creatures summoned by the spells would not be ordinary magical creatures, but monstrous aberrations from the Outer Planes.
Desolute 13/29 Monday September 3rd, 2007 12:43:10 AM
As Desolute turns to leave he says, "Your a witness sir, much better then hear say. You asked me if you could assist and when I confirm it, you resist, interesting." Fazo is ingnored from then on.
Desolute does not fail to mention the gnome gardener to the Professor, as well as his words about the head mistress, "Why hasn't she informed you of the gardener's words yet?"
Desolute will remember the pain from the magical trap. Pain is good. As long as one can scream, one is breathing. "Hades!" He attempts to maneuver out of the way of the blow, but inexperience is his enemy today. He looks apologetic as the whisps of ash blow away with the wind, "I have failed."

"True failure is measured only by an inability to learn from one's missteps." Harvest Moon places a hand upon the arm of the half-orc in a gesture of friendship, this to heal his spirit. She then forms her hands into the symbol of Alemi to heal the wounds of his body.
"If the powers of Itzal Jerse appeared to begin just after the beginning of the latest term, the it may be possible that he has come upon them from a place other than the school," ponders Harvest Moon. "Perhaps even while at home. I think that this will make it more difficult to determine what it is that has joined with the boy."
"But, if my small and common knowledge of arcane matters is correct, then if this is the spell book of Itzal Jerse, then we need not concern ourselves with such a great threat from the boy. But the friend of the boy still remains a danger. If Itzal Jerse's school spell book is not here, then it is likely that he retains it. Also, I saw books of magic in the boy's room when I was on the upper floor of the Jerse home in search of Evil."
"How many spellbooks, Davros Sapphiredge, do you believe it is possible for a wizard of Itzal Jerse's power to possess? Further, do you believe that we might draw him to us, if he knew that we were in possession of this book?"
"I believe that we have enough evidence with which to return to Jarlwolf, brace his family with questions, and confiscate the writings in his room. As to the boy's capture and rehabilitation, we have seen his anger and how it rules him. I believe that if we draw this anger to ourselves, we can draw the boy to us as well. We will be able to face him at a place of our choosing, and to reduce the chance that other innocents will be harmed."
"We should take all things of magic from this room for a start. Also, we are bound to protect all those upon Itzal Jerse's list of vengeance."
"Professor Roundtree, how many of these upon this list do you recognize? Would it be possible for you to send word to them, warning of the danger?"
"I think that we should return to Jarlwolf and the Jerse home. Itzal Jerse may not return here. If we cut off the path to his home as well, then he will have little other alternative than to come for us."

Standing in the hall, Arminas listens to the discussion between Harvest and the professor. So Itzal is to be expelled, that should make things more interesting.
"Professor Roundtree, there has been some discussion on how to handle Itzal. He attacked us with summoned creatures, yet he fled before he saw the outcome. Some believe he meant to cause us delay while others seem to think it was an attempt on our lives. What to do when we meet him though is my question. We are adventures, who typically defend ourselves when attacked with lethal force. How do you suggest we deal with Itzal? If we are to take him as a prisoner, is there a particular spell or item we should use?"

"Forgive me Harvest, I was distracted by examining the scrolls and book."
"Spellbooks? Itzal is not likely to have more than two books, I would think. One to contain all the spells he knows, and another containing a few for traveling. The book we found here is probably neither of these. It would seem no instructor at the school would teach these spells. He must have axquired it somewhere."
"As for taking it, I would say it may be his most prized possesion. It would definately draw him out."
"I think it is still possible that Itzal may only be misguided. Certainly his family would appreciate if we captured him as opposed to killing him. Let the authorities decide what to do with him after we confront him I say. As for how we will do this Arminas? I am sure we will find a way."
"After the Professor returns, it would seem we need to decide whether to look for Itzal or let him look for us. He may cause a great deal of harm if we choose incorrectly or leave one place only to find he is in the other."
Malgant Monday September 3rd, 2007 10:53:26 PM
Malgant listens as Desolute relays his conversation with the gardener.Interesting, he thinks. " My forte was not in learning spells when I was trained but in physical combat. What I do remember is that a Circle of Protection from evil such as the one I have acess to right now CAN be used to trap a summoned creature, Like Itzal's friend. it requires that I know the creatures name, as Desolute has just provided me with. However if the creature can teleport or otherwise flit from one place to another with magic, I will need someone to make him unable to do that for the spell to work for more than a moment. Very interesting."
DM Kathy Monday September 3rd, 2007 11:36:41 PM
"She likely has been investigating," Professor Roundtree replies to Desolute. "I'll ask her when she returns for start of term, however."
Harvest heals the worst of Desolute's hurts. "I will inform those on Itzal's list at once," Professor Roundtree assures her. "The safest thing is probably for them to return to school early, now that he will be expelled. I will suggest it to them."
"If you are to take a mage prisoner," Professor Roundtree advises Arminas, "take care that he can neither gesture nor speak. It is also useful to blindfold a mage, so that he cannot see to target a spell. Even with these precautions, be on the alert. Some mages have trained themselves to cast spells without words or gestures, although I do not think Itzal Jerse is among them."
He looks around at you. "Well. It seems I have some urgent messages to write. Can I answer any more questions for you before I go?"
Arminas Tuesday September 4th, 2007 12:06:14 AM
Arminas nods at the professor's wise council.
"Yes, we will need to be careful. I remember recently we encountered an evil druid, Malgant here was against putting her in armor to prevent her casting of spells. Something about not wanting to offend her wasn't it Malgant? I hope you do not feel the same about Itzal. Perhaps he has strong beliefs against being bound and gagged. We should follow Professor Roundtree's suggestions if we take him prisoner."
"Now, what will we do to find him?"

Harvest Tuesday September 4th, 2007 9:57:00 AM
"Many thanks, Professor Roundtree. Peace be with you."
"I do not know, Arminas Calaelen. All that I can think of is to cause Itzal Jerse to seek us out. To do this, he must know where we are. And to inform him of where we might be, I can only think to return to his home and speak with his mother. To tell her of all we have discovered. Surely she would then speak to him. If we mentioned a location where we were to be found, he might seek us out."
"Unless ... " Recalling the words Desolute the Half-orc related of the gardner's conversation. "Have you, Professor Roundtree, ever heard the name of Medonius?"
Desolute Tuesday September 4th, 2007 10:34:27 AM
Desolute's nose is broken and bloody. His front teeth, loose in his head. The rogue feels like he was kicked in the face by an ogre, but then Harvest heals his wounds, something he is not used to. Where he is from, one recovers naturally from wounds, unless your the chief or his guards. Desolute cleans himself up after being returned to normal. He checks his teeth to see if they are still loose. "NIce magic and many thanks." Waiting for the professor to leave Desolute speaks his mind, as always, "I would like to find this head mistress's quarters. I can't believe she would know about this and not tell the other professors. She is likely training someone to be as evil as her."
Lorth Tuesday September 4th, 2007 1:46:17 PM
Lorth follows his friends outside and gives Desolute a wide birth when he messes with the papers. "I doubt the professor with allow us to search the headmistress's private quarters. However I'm curious to where Itzel would have obtained such a book, I would think it would have to be someone here at the school.", Lorth opines. ...he pauses... "It will be interesting to see what reaction the head mistress has to the discovery of this book. However, I also believe we have a good bit of evidence to bring back to the pitchfork council."
Malgant Tuesday September 4th, 2007 7:38:03 PM
Malgant wonders at some of the questions being tossed around. He mainly ignores Arminas' jabs, not needing any intuition to figure out why someone who would threaten to kill prisoners would be a stranger to kindness. he addresses the other questions though and pitches one of his own to the professor before he leaves. " Why would it surprise you that a wealthy lad had more than one spellbook Davros? If he has the money could he not have several different books, with some or all of his spells within them. Also could not someone with money purchase a book such as the summoning book in question? Perhaps the seller did not know its true value, or how dangerous it could be. Professor, are there book sellers in the town where Itzal may have aquired this book? Or perhaps shops that deal in the goods of those who die and have their worldly goods sold to pay their debts?"
Bralin Tuesday September 4th, 2007 7:46:37 PM
Bralin listens and observes. He nods at Harvest's suggestions regarding returning to Dulcet.
Most of Arminas' questions he ignores. But, he has an answer to the one on how to capture Itzal, and Malgant hasn't offered it.
"There is a divine spell that renders the target immobile," he offers. "I can cast it. Likely Malgant can as well. Tis doubtful the boy has the willpower to overcome its effects. We can bind him while he's under its power."
Davros Tuesday September 4th, 2007 10:26:39 PM
"Thank you Professor. Where do you think he may have acquired the book? And may we keep it until Itzal has been captured?"
"Malgant, It is certainly possible he has more than one or two spellbooks, but even though his family is well-to-do, they do not have unlimited resources."
"Where do we find him? I'm sure he knows we came here. We could search the town. The escpe spell he used did not have a long range."

DM Kathy Tuesday September 4th, 2007 11:56:31 PM
"Medonius." Professor Roundtree repeats the name Harvest has given him. "No, I can't recall ever hearing it before. I could do some research on the name, if you like."
The professor doesn't think it is likely that the headmistress is up to anything nefarious. "I'll speak with her in a few days, when she returns," he says. "Perhaps she simply didn't see the significance. She would not have had all of the information we have assembled here."
Professor Roundtree doesn't know where Itzal would have acquired the second spellbook. "He could have obtained it here, or in Jarlwolf, or anywhere in between," he says.
Having answered your questions to the best of his ability, the professor politely shows you to the gate, then returns to his business, with a promise to notify you if he learns anything of "Medonius."
By the time you have finished your interview, it is past midmorning--a clear, crisp autumn day. Do you stay in town another night, or do you begin your journey back to Jarlwolf immediately?
Lorth Wednesday September 5th, 2007 9:40:08 AM
Lorth leaves the school grounds then turns to speak. "I am eager to get on the road. If everyone else is inclined to do the same.", Lorth says. Lorth summons Tobiasz if the party decides to head out.
Desolute Wednesday September 5th, 2007 10:16:42 AM
Desolute can't help but to test his front teeth with his tongue on occassion, just to ensure they will stay where they belong. This is now two slights paid in advance, believes Desolute. "Everyone is evil to some extent. Some just more then others. If you all want to try to save the boy, he must be confronted by true evil. He must stare it in the eye to realize how ugly and gruesome, evil really is, then and only then can he make the choice. Give me eighteen hours with him when we capture him. I will allow him to see true evil." Desolute smiles widely at the thought, "I only need one hour really, the other seventeen hours are for me."
Harvest Wednesday September 5th, 2007 10:41:37 AM
"I wish to wait," Harvest tells the rest, "until morning. Perhaps Professor Roundtree will know something about the name of Medonius by then."
"We can check the school one last time before leaving fresh in the morning."
Arminas Wednesday September 5th, 2007 10:44:29 AM
Arminas follows the group out of the school grounds. Looking up, he gives a low whistle and Ewan dives down toward him.
Desolute then speaks about true evil, and Arminas arches his eyebrow as he looks between Malgant, Lorth and Florin.
"Well now, it seems our group is ever changing. Perhaps I am no longer the darkest member of our group. Though I must admit Desolute, you even give me the chills. True, I am not slow to kill when I think it is necessary. Even then though, I gain no pleasure from it."
Arminas strokes the head of Ewan, and the eagle fluffs her feathers.
"I am ready to travel if you choose. We have long to go, and may chance upon Itzal before we meet with his parents. Though I am open to wait until morning, as Harvest suggests also."
Davros Wednesday September 5th, 2007 4:12:01 PM
"I say we wait till morning. Any information the Professor gives us will prove useful. Also, we should get a statement from him to return to the council with."
"Desolute, you should watch the fine line you walk. There are several present who may take exception to your words."
Desolute (second post) Wednesday September 5th, 2007 4:22:39 PM
Desolute smiles at Davros with some small courtesy, "What ever do you mean my friend? In what way did I threaten him or anyone else? I only wish to share with him my dreams, something I have refused to share with you, for your own good." Desolute drops the emotion from his face as he continues, "As far as exception to my words, I will say what I like, when I like and however I like, just do me a favor and let me know when you plan to do something about it. I will not be intimidated by the likes of you or anyone else on two legs."
Bralin Wednesday September 5th, 2007 4:45:57 PM I will say what I like, when I like and however I like..
Bralin stops.
"No, you will not," he responds levelly. "This group will not function if respect is not given to each other words and deeds. If needs be, you will couch your words to accommodate the time or place."
The dwarf holds up a hand to forestall the inevitable counterpoint.
"You were invited to join our company and accepted. We are not required to earn your respect. If in time you find you cannot respect us, you are free to leave."
Desolute (Third Post) Wednesday September 5th, 2007 5:04:29 PM
"It seems those of good are just as inclined to judge others, just as evil does, for their own gains, withour consideration for honesty. I was threatened by the likes of you, Davros. I have not laid down any threats, I have only spoke the facts. If your all to timid and reserved for the truth, so be it, but still, I will say what I desire and you can ask me to leave when you will, just as you asked me to join you."
Malgant Wednesday September 5th, 2007 6:20:05 PM
Malgant was in a foul mood having already been verbally taunted this morning. He took a deep breath and counted to ten as the confontation escealted around him. On three Bralin stepped in and clearly stated what had been tacitly understood all along. Malgant din't really dislike anyone, save for the one mage that had misused his trust and caused all that troble back home. What he did dislike was the boasting of and threats to do anything to any prisoners the group took. Harvest would subdue anyone she fought, it was in her nature. The othes were a bit more rough, 'an eye for an eye' typesand Malgant supposed he ran that way too. But once a foe was captured or had surrendered then there would be no retaliations. He meant to make that clear.
Malgant reached ten and leveled his gaze on the group. The breath he held was used to express his views. " ENOUGH. Let me be clear on this so that there can be no misinterpretation later. Harvest has sworn an oath, to herself and to Alemi that she will not cause permanant physical harm to those she battles. This causes you to many times have prisoners at the end of a fight rather than corpses. That is the case and I could see that when I chose to join you. As Bralin just said, we all will either respect that choice or we may take our leave. I have issue with the treatment of those prisoners. They will not be tortured, beaten, threatened with beating or death, or otherwise humiliated whilst I am among you. I was silent on the trip back to the village while those very things happened since I was not yet a member of your group. It will not happen again. If that is not an acceptable position for me to take I would rather hear that now, than when a life hangs in the balance. I am sorry if this is not the time or place for this. If you like we can go somewhere more private to discuss this."
The words are out and can not be called back. Malgant knows that together these people, the Swords of Light can do a great deal of good in the Wold. They are the people he was meant to find when he was cast out to satisfy the elders sentence. He hopes that there is still a common ground between them.
Arminas - 2nd post Wednesday September 5th, 2007 7:30:15 PM
Arminas is glad that the air is finally being cleared, and people are speaking plainly.
"I do not pretend to defend Desolute's plan, but I see that you think I have done something wrong with prisoners in the past. Let us discuss what is appropriate then.
I believe that if you take a prisoner that you should secure them from escape, that simply having them give their word is not enough. Securing them may require using chains, rope, gags or whatever is necessary. That may include the use of armor. They are trading their life for discomfort.
I believe that once a prisoner is secured, that it should be clear to them that if they try and escape they will be killed.
In turn, I will agree that I was wrong in asking for the druid to be 'bruised'. I was afraid of her escape, and my hate for her overcame me. I will not threaten to beat or torture in the future.
This is my position, should I stay or move on?"
Harvest 2nd Post Wednesday September 5th, 2007 9:31:30 PM
Through the many speaches and declarations, Harvest Moon remains silent. But her pale skin beneath her shaved hair becomes a brighter and brighter pink, and her mouth turns to a deeper and firmer pout as her eyes narrow and her jaws clench.
"When we have confronted Itzal Jerse and ensured that he will harm no one, then I will leave this group," she says, her tone even and overly controlled. "I will seek out Anthos."
With those words alone, she leaves the others, returning to the inn to await the morrow.
Davros(second post) Wednesday September 5th, 2007 10:00:52 PM
"sigh....Desolute, that was no threat I was merely trying to stave off the heated discussion that was sure to follow. Apparently I am too late. I do not intimidate. As a trained battlemage, my actions speak for themselves. I will say this though. I don't care for the tone of your voice. We are a group. We work together. We survive battles with monsters and the forces of evil because we work together and trust one another. Trust is important as you will come to see."
"Yeesh. And I thought Arminas had sticks in his shorts..."
"Malgant, if we have mistreated any prisoners, please explain. If we have erred, then give us a chance to improve. Surely we treated the prisoners better than they treated you?"
"Harvest, are you sure?" Davros is not sure what to make of the announcement and says nothing more.
DM Kathy Thursday September 6th, 2007 1:46:39 AM Lorth and Arminas would prefer to depart immediately, but Harvest and Davros want to stay another night. Accordingly, you spend another night at the inn, and have plenty to discuss while you await the morrow.
Conflicting ideas on the ethical treatment of prisoners loom large--especially since you will in all likelihood be taking Itzal Jerse captive. What is to become of him then? It is clear that the party has differing opinions, and it is equally clear that they should probably be sorted out before the actual capture.
The next morning brings more rain, and a note from Professor Roundtree. He reports that he has sent messages to everyone on Itzal's list, warning them of their possible danger and urging their speedy return to the school. He hasn't had much time to do research, and has so far turned up no mention of the name Medonius. He promises to keep looking, and to discuss Itzal's expulsion with the headmistress as soon as she returns.
Lorth Thursday September 6th, 2007 8:03:48 AM
Lorth looks at Bralin in silent support, then turns to Arminas.
"Arminas my friend, for once we see eye to eye. I agree with all of what you said. And surely you shouldn't leave the group, same as Harvest. But then she must follow her heart.", Lorth smiles.
Bralin Thursday September 6th, 2007 10:22:30 AM
Bralin is still calm.
"Harvest, know that your views ally with the majority of this band. Malgant, Lorth, Florin, and I all follow a similiar creed. At battle's end, those that can be saved from death will be."
"Arminas, despite words to the contrary, has demonstrated he follows the creed. His emotions overtook him with the druid, which he has admitted to and apologized for. Nothing more should be asked of him."
"This company will take prisoners. We will subdue them, take the necessary steps to ensure they remain subdued, and turn them over to local authorities whom we trust. We have done so on mulitple occasions before, and will do so again. Such a philosophy admittedly involves personal risk, and that risk will be borne."
"Desolute, your view is not truth, it is your opinion. You are entitled to it, as you are entitled to if and how to reveal your past history."
"You are not entitled to spout idle threats and mean-spirited declarations. If possible, we will not kill the boy, to declare otherwise is misleading. We are addressing your conduct. Your accusation of intimidation is unfounded. You may be uncomfortable, but you are not threatened."
"The question is for you. Not for Arminas, and not for Harvest. You. Can you follow the path this company chooses to walk?"
Harvest Thursday September 6th, 2007 11:20:08 AM
Harvest Moon says nothing. Instead, she takes in each one of these people who she has called Companion. Her eyes weigh the heart of each. Bralin Stoneminder, Arminas Calaelen. Davros Sapphiredge and Paladin Florin Jandeth. She gauges the smile of Paladin Lorth and she looks to the eyes of Protector Malgant to see what he might be thinking. She watches the new one who calls himself Desolute.
Then she turns away, returning to the inn.
"Are you rested?" Harvest pats the shoulder of her gentle mount. "Today we return to Jarlwolf, Fyrda. Do you like walking the roads, I wonder? Or would you prefer to remain in a stable to be cared for there? I would worry for you were I to leave you behind."
The brown girl waits patiently for her horse to be saddled, before leaping to her high back for the journey back.
Desolute Thursday September 6th, 2007 11:30:25 AM
Desolute looks Bralin in the eyes as he speaks. "You talk nonsense if you think my words are not true. Your truly ignorant about evil. Someday, I hope you learn your own truth's, then you will know I am right. I choose not to follow you."
He looks to Davros, "Your words confuse me. When I am spoken to in such a manner, I expect a fight soon after. If that is not your intent, curb your own words around me as well. Regardless, I choose not to follow you."
"Malgant, you're an enigma for certain, and I'm not sure what to make of you, but I choose not to follow you."
"Arminas, I have heard nothing but the truth from you. I like you, but you are no leader. I choose not to follow you either."
He honors the paladin's by ignoring them, since they have not interfered.
"Harvest, you have shown me compassion, understanding and the ways of good with your touch." Desolute gets down on his knees, in front of everyone. He lifts her muddy foot and places it on top of his head, unconcerned that his grooming will be tarnished, as he continues, "I ask that you be my new chief. I will guard and protect you from all that would cause you harm. You and only you will I follow, until you Harvest ask me to leave. Until then, if your path is to find your love, I will be beside you. If your path takes you to Gargul, it is there, I will roll out the carpet so your entrance will be grand."
He takes her foot from his head and sits back down. Ignoring the others. He orders food and drinks for himself and says, "I'll buy the lady's meal and drinks as well." Then flips the bar maiden a coin to pay for it.
Arminas Thursday September 6th, 2007 12:45:27 PM
Arminas is in shock with Harvest's pronouncement. He lowers his eyes, and speaks humbly to her.
"The path you have chosen is wise. I know little of how to do such a thing, to fight without causing harm. Please though, stay and teach me. There are arrows that cause sleep, I could buy some of those. I will leave if necessary, you need to stay and teach your ways."
Arminas takes Fryda's saddle and places it upon the horse. Taking care, he adjusts it to fit comfortably on the horse. Looking the horse, in the eye, he adds:
"I spoke to Fryda recently about being left behind. She desires to be with you. Do not dismiss her because she is old. She will be much more faithful and trustworthy than you will find in a younger mare. She is more true than I am, I must learn from her also."
Looking at Lorth, he adds: "Thanks, I wanted to be clear as to what was appropriate. I do not want to cause distress."
To Desolute: "I know nothing of the 'truth' you say I speak. I speak only my mind, which is no more true than anothers. As to being a leader, I do not claim to be. Leaders have followers, I have none. Bralin is our leader, I follow him, as we all do."
Arminas will go and buy arrows of sleep before they depart, if the catacombs are open.
Harvest Thursday September 6th, 2007 4:02:09 PM
Balancing upon one foot, Harvest Moon, for a second time, turns a brilliant shade of red.
"I do not know, Desolute, whether I have it within me to be your Chief. But, if you are willing, I will be your friend. It is a think very simply said, but not so lightly taken, nor so simply accomplished."
"It is not always such an easy thing for we who rely often upon our the strength of our own powers, to have faith in the good heart of others. Especially if that good is not worn so readily upon the sleeve. As your friend I pledge to trust in the goodness of your heart, and to trust that your actions will be lawful and good as well."
"I am flattered, Arminas Calaelen, that you look to me for learning. But I think you know already more than I can teach. Sometimes it is necessary to kill. You slew the bear when it would have languished in an misery that we had no power to quell. It was a brave thing you did, and a thing beyond me to have accomplished."
"But let us go. If there are no more answers for us here, we should find Itzal Jerse as swiftly as possible, before he attempts to harm someone less able to protect themselves than we."
Malgant Thursday September 6th, 2007 5:36:32 PM
" You do not display your feelings very easily Arminas. I was not sure if you knew that I was distresed by the thought of keeping the druid 'beaten unconsious' so as to keep her from trying to escape. You are aware of it now and that is plenty for me. Everything else you have said coincides with what I think is fair when a prisoner is taken. Bound so as not to harm their captors, and warned as to the consequenses of escaping. These are fair terms that any captive should be able to say they were treated well." As he finishes he steps up Arminas and offers his hand in friendship. Malgant looks to Harvest and is completely unsure what to say. He unfairly used her beliefs as an example and she now wants to leave them. He needs to say something to show that was not his intention. " Harvest, I did not mean to single you out as a bad example. Frankly your oath is not one I think I could ever live up to. However I will not kill an unprotected foe, that much I can speak as true."
Davros Thursday September 6th, 2007 6:12:50 PM
Davros shrugs his shoulders. "I offered advice, free and with no malice. Use it or not as you will."
"And since everyone is so concerned with harming others, does no one comment on my magic? My specialty is called evocation. Mostly those type of spells are used to end a fight quicker rather than later. I do not use those spells without careful thought, but I do use them when we are attacked by foes."
Arminas - 2nd post Thursday September 6th, 2007 6:16:44 PM
Arminas takes Malgant's hand, which fits as a childs hand into an adults.
"Your distress was evident, as I hope mine was. Next time we will take Harvest's suggestion and bind the druid in armor. That way neither of us will be distressed, and the druid will come to no harm. That is, if we ever encounter an evil druid again. I hope never to see or hear of one."
Harvest 3rd Post Thursday September 6th, 2007 8:34:39 PM
"You are kind to think of me, Protector Malgant. But I was not offended by your use of me as an example."
"And I think no less or badly even, of others who cause lethal harm to others in the pursuit of good and just ends, Davros Sapphiredge. I was once an acolyte of Gargul. I know that all things die at some time. Almost all things must kill in order that they eat. There is no crime or evil in this. I too eat the flesh of animals."
"But Alemi has asked that I do not kill, that I do not break the skin, that I do not crush bone, and these things I do for Alemi. They are the path that I have chosen for myself, and I do not compel others to follow, nor do I see them as any less than they have proven themselves to be."
"We should go. Do not think too much on what we will or will not do to Itzal Jerse. So far, he has shown few traits that would redeem his character, but then again, we know him little. We may yet be forced to slay him for the greater good. Or we may find a way to steer him from the path of evil. Whichever comes to pass, I have faith that we will make the right decision, both just and good. If I did not have such faith in all of you, I would leave now and not later."
Malgant 2nd post Thursday September 6th, 2007 10:42:24 PM
" Davros, my sword is not what you might call a non lethal instrument for good. What we are discussing is after the battle fog claers and we are all safe that we are no harming those that we have taken captive. Know this too. When the fighting stops AND my companions are safe is when I will look to my captives. Not before my companions are all safe."
DM Kathy Friday September 7th, 2007 1:41:10 AM
The Swords have much to discuss as they spend the remainder of the day in town.
The next morning, you make ready to depart. Harvest has a few questions for her mount. Fyrda's reply is an affectionate nudge that all but knocks the girl off her feet, and a gentle whuff of air that stirs the crest of her shaven head.
The rain has not dampened Darkfire's spirits, either, but Arminas is readily able to control him. Loath to fly in such weather, Ewan perches atop her friend's gear, chiding him gently for leaving the nest in such conditions.
Your worries about how to find Itzal Jerse are laid to rest about midday. You are on a deserted stretch of road when you see the boy about 50 feet in front of you. "You!" he shouts. "I know what you've been doing! Getting me expelled! Do you think that will stop me? I'll get you for this!"
Raising his hands, he begins to cast a spell....
Harvest (AC19 vs AoO AC23, HP 48/48) d20+14=31 d20+7=20 d8+2=6 Friday September 7th, 2007 9:00:50 AM
"Perhaps you know what we have been doing, Itzal Jerse," Harvest Moon calls out from atop Fyrda's back. "But I do not think you understand. Consider what it is that you believe we are trying to stop you from doing? What are you attempting that we would wish to stop you?"
Kicking up her leg, the brown girl slips from the back of her mount, dropping to the ground in a crouch.
"Regardless, we wish to speak to you of this, and speak we shall."
With a burst of speed, Harvest clears the intervening 50 feet. Her eyes quickly take in the surrounding area for signs of the boy's Water Friend.
Then as she closes on the boy, she delivers a slap to his inner thigh designed to stun from shock and surprise. Rolls and Actions Spot to detect Invisible 31 Hit Itzal AC20 (Stunning Fist Fort vs DC18 or be stunned for 1 round) Damage 6hp non-lethal
Desolute (AC:18 HP: 29) d20+3=19 Friday September 7th, 2007 9:56:15 AM
Desolute pulls his weapons, just as Itzal begins to speak. He looks toward Harvest and remembers her words on not harming the boy, he makes his way that direction in hopes of spotting his friend. If Desolute spots his friend, the barbarian, rogue will charge it and attack. If not, he moves to protect Harvest's back while she does the subduing.
Lorth d20+1=18 Friday September 7th, 2007 9:59:51 AM
Hoping Harvest can subdue Itzal, Lorth couches his lance under his arm. He scans the area for the sign of any other hostiles (spot 18), gripping his lance tightly. Softly he says to Tobiasz, "Be ready my friend." He then waits to charge if something else presents itself.
Bralin Friday September 7th, 2007 11:13:58 AM
Arminas' remark that Bralin is the leader produces an involuntary sour expression in the dwarf that is quickly supressed.
Bralin endures Desolute's rebuttal without expression. The half-orc's sudden expression of devotion toward Harvest does produce a raised eyebrow, however.
He thoughtfully considers all this while the rest of the company adds their own opinions to the matter.
Apparently, resolution has been attained. "So be it," Bralin concludes. He has been given more to think on this night.
But, it is not night yet, and once again they meet the boy on the road. And once again, the youth jumps to conclusions and leaps to action. A common trait among the young, he reflects with mild amusement. As Harvest and Desolute race to incapacitate Itzal, Bralin casts a spell to help their cause.

The arrows punch through fur and bury themselves deeply and a small cluster in the creature's upper back. Flesh sears and blisters as the fire burns.
Malgant draw his great sword as flames dance down the blade and charges one of the apes. The blade comes down hard and nearly severs the creatures right arm, biting deeply into its shoulder.
Davros casts a spell of Dispelling towards the opponent mage and his summoned creatures as he calls out to his companions where Itzal and the floating man are. To Davros, of course, the invisibility or lack thereof about Itzal is impossible to tell. From the young mans expression of disgust and near horror, though, Davros knows he undid more than one spell. Three of the apes, also vanish.
Desolute manages to hold his weapons and his feet under the onslaught and with a sudden primal scream revaling the apes themselves he strikes out. But there is no longer an ape within his reach.
Harvest calls for Desolute to fall back, but he refuses and the heavily wounded ape at Harvests rear. With a single opponent now standing, Harvest weaves and dodges while bringing a leg into the ape. It connects soundly. She again calls for Desolute to retreat and seek healing. The Monk moves back herself to draw the apes attacks and allow Desolute more free passage. The Ape obliges as she moves. [Hit AC 29 crit 22 dmg 11]
Bralin pulls a wand and sends a set of Magic Missiles into the remaining Ape, nearly killing it.
Lorth digs his heels into Tobiasz, "Charge, my friend.", he says. With 3 of the Apes vanquished by Davros's spell, Lorth puts his spear into the last threat and skewers the creature. It too vanishes upon its death.
The fight is over nearly as soon as it began. The Apes are dead or destroyed and Itzal stands only a few feet from Lorth. His face reddened with rage and disbelief at what Davros accomplished. "How? What! How did...? IMPOSSIBLE!" he spits and stammers. "You wait, you just wait!" he then scream and casts another spell and is gone again. Spellcraft 19 [Dimension Door]
The older man, which only Davros can see, smiles. Apparently amused, but the wizard can tell Itzal's 'Water Friend' was watching and estimating the group and those keen eyes took in everything. The man then simply floats to and into the ground.

Arminas - 2nd post d20+8=22 Wednesday September 12th, 2007 10:09:24 AM
Looking at the wounded, Arminas is pleased that healing has already been done.
With a low whistle, Ewan returns to Arminas. Casting a spell, he speaks to her:
"Ewan, fly high and circle this area. Look for humans hiding in trees. Tuck your wings in a short dive if you see them, but then return to us quickly."
"I have told Ewan to search, I will try and find others to help. I can also travel through the trees to look, though I must go alone. What are your thoughts on the searching?"
While waiting for the group to decide, Arminas looks around for other birds in the area. Calling out to them in song, he asks for their help in looking for the hidden men.
"Help us please, men are hiding in the trees. Call to your friends, spread the word and return to me if you find them."
"I have asked for the birds to help look, I don't know if they will though."

His comrades have the wounded well in hand, and so he scans the woods and waits for Arminas. Mayhap the next attack is not far off. [Spot 26]
He remains mounted, with wand in hand. Speed may soon be required, which he will lose if off his steed.
"Medonius is the key," he answers Davros. "Mayhap Dulcet can help us."

Lorth lowers his lance at Itzal as he vanishes. He quickly looks around trying to discern where the mage has gone. (Spot 13, Listen 4, heh) Failing that he turns Tobiasz towards his friends and trots over to them. "I beleive Itzal will eventually return to his home. We should go there if we cannot flush him out here."
Desolute Wednesday September 12th, 2007 11:11:06 AM
His legs shake as he stands to his feet. He thanks Malgant and Harvest for the healing, but his strength is still gone. "All I can do really is walk for eight hours, or stay here and rest. Point out to me where that guy went into the ground and I will sit there and wait for him to show up, or I can walk back to the inn and wait for you all there?"
Forward Thinking Wednesday September 12th, 2007 4:48:33 PM
Malgant and Harvest quickly close on Desolute and begin healing him and harvest to herself with a magical wand. Desolute for his part is exhausted, thankful and seems a bit disappointed in still being alive.
Arminas mentions looking immediately for Itzal and the idea is quickly seconded. With magical aid he calls down Ewan and asks her to begin spiraling outward. Looking for a human amongst the trees. With a blink she responds, "I will try." And launches into the air. Arminas then calls for any other birds to join in the search. It does occur to him that with such a large predator in the air above their collective heads, any birds in the area will likely be keeping a low profile. Looking about himself as he thinks of Tree Striding, Arminas can see hundreds of them that would work. The forest is full of them and thus full of locations that would require searching. Itzal picked his location well to allow escape. To use wild empathy, the ranger and the animal must be able to study each other, which means that they must be within 30 feet of one another under normal visibility conditions. Generally, influencing an animal in this way takes 1 minute, but, as with influencing people, it might take more or less time. Florin keeps a sharp eye out, in case this Medonius decides to do more than observe.
As Harvest uses 2 of the wands charges in healing, she speaks of next stratedgies. First and foremost would seem to be preventing the opponents from escape.
Davros knows the spell being used and it is a problem. It only requires a verbal component and can instantly relocate the caster at least 650' in any direction he chooses. Davros recaps what he saw and gleaned from the older man floating near Itzal.
Bralin remains mounted with wand in hand, perhaps Dulcet can help. He forewards the thought that Medonius is the key .
Lorth offers a continuation to the home of Itzal, if the youth fails to turn up in the near future.
The eagle flies above the trees and beyond vision of anyone to keep track of as she soars above the forest to the east. Riding the thermals in a clockwise direction, she climbs back into view at a much greater height so as to be seen now by the group high above as a tiny dot in the sky.
The woods are quiet, that is silent from sound beyond the normal bounds of the woods. All eyes and ears are open, but nothing is seen or heard that could give away the location of Itzal. Ewan's ride continues into the Southwestern quarter. She is perhaps 1,000 feet high and nearly 500' to the southwest, the smallest of specs in a blue sky.
Desolute has fully calmed and recovered from entering the near beserker like state of the fight and the group stands upon the road. The forest lies to either side some 30' off and grows thick and heavy soon after.
Harvest Wednesday September 12th, 2007 9:58:48 PM
Harvest Moon stands, poised in stillness. Nothing comes from without or within.
"He has fled yet again," she says, rising from her slight crouch. She frowns at the rents in her clothing, the jagged tear in her jacket not yet one year old. The nice blouse she had bought in Rowena with Anthos, now torn and stained with blood.
"Did you say that the Water Friend, Medonius, floated into the ground, Davros Sapphiredge?" Harvest Moon draws a wand as she walks up the road past the scene of conflict, past the ground stained with blood, her own and that of Desolute. "Was it this spot, Davros Sapphiredge? Where Medonius entered the ground?" She kneels and examines the ground. "I wonder what manner of creature is this Medonius?"
She straightens and sighs.
"I do not think we will find them. Once again, we must wait until they find us." Activating the magic within the wand, Harvest mends first her jacket, and then her blouse. "We should continue to Jarlwolf to tell Madam Dulcet of what we have found. At that time, also we should ensure that all is well with Paladin Florin's Ivy and her family. Then, from there, once again to the Jerse home. I can think of few place to go that will draw Itzal Jerse's attention than his home."

He strats gathering the horses and bringing them to their riders. "Mount up, we do not want to make plans here. If the mage cannot be found we should head for the first Inn on our way home. We have something precious to him and he will seek us out I am sure. Lorth is right we will find Itzal at home, unless he finds us first, I think Lady Dulcet needs to be informed of his brigandry and will likely deputize us to arrest him. Let us get moving." Once the group has been moving for at least half an hour Malgant will explain his actions further. " If that was Medonius what would stop him from having hovered just below the level of the earth and listening to us. Making plans at that spot was not a good idea so I moved us along. Itzal will likely try to get that book back, and he has about 4 days to do it while we are out here on the road. I would suggest we set watches each night until he is caught. I am not totally sure we should stay at an Inn when we rest either. Itzal is reckless and others might get hurt by something he does to us if we stay at an Inn. What do the rest of you think?"

Florin Jadenth Wednesday September 12th, 2007 11:17:11 PM
(OOC:Jumping in as the DM said. One last sorry for not being present during the fight.)
Florin looks to the others as he pats Ajax's neck and speaks up, "So, we are following or tracking Itzal then?" He nods as he heard Bralin's comment and will go with the others to help find the young wizard or whichever they decide. He does wonder what kind of problems the young man will throw at them next.
Lorth Thursday September 13th, 2007 8:18:56 AM
Lorth follows Malgannt's lead and is ready to move when the party does. He doesn't say anything while on the road, preferring to listen to his friends ideas. Thinking about the "water friend", Lorth decides that whatever it is, is just toying with Itzal. "He will probably just let Itzal die if it comes to that.", he says aloud.
Bralin Thursday September 13th, 2007 9:52:47 AM
Harvest and Malgant are both for pushing on immediately. Bralin's ability to sway views has been amply disproved once this day, and he has no taste for a repeat performance.
The dwarf looks at Arminas, and shrugs. "To Jarlwolf," he agrees stoically.
On the road, Malgant asks about staying at the inn. With a tone of resignation, the dwarf forces himself to answer. "The boy has demonstrated a desire to remain secret, as has Medonius. A public assault is inconsistent with their current actions. Tis safe enough to stay."
Arminas Thursday September 13th, 2007 10:16:50 AM
With a look of resignation, Arminas calls Darkfire to him. He leaps onto the horses back, and takes the lead on the road.
"To Jarlwolf then."
Looking up, he sees the small dot that is Ewan. Whistling, he gives a gesture that Ewan knows. She will follow along above them.
Desolute Thursday September 13th, 2007 11:22:54 AM
Legs still shaking, he ambles behind the group, with the thought that he could catch up later, if they move to fast for him.
Arminas - 2nd post Thursday September 13th, 2007 11:42:52 AM
Swinging down from Darkfire, he speaks with his horse:
"Darkfire, carry the warrior. He is wounded and weak, be gentle."
"Desolute, Darkfire will carry you. I can walk."
Arminas helps Desolute onto Darkfire, and then pulls a scroll from his pouch. Reading it, his step becomes quicker.

Davros Thursday September 13th, 2007 4:16:01 PM
Davros shows Harvest the spot on the ground where Medonius escaped. He then gets back on his magically summoned mount and heads towards Jarlwolf with the others. "Yes Harvest, he floated right into the ground. This troubles me. I originally thought Itzal's friend might be an imp, but now it appears his friend is so much more."
"I agree speaking with Madam Dulcet and the council is wise. Itzal comes from a wealthy family and it would help if we arrested him on official sanction instead of as vigilantes."
"Since I am sure we will face him again soon, I would like to suggest to the spellcasters to prepare protection from evil spells. This will help defend against the attacks of his summoned creatures."

Malgant Thursday September 13th, 2007 4:57:19 PM
" I had not thought about his desire for secrecy Bralin. That probably is enough to restrain him in public. I have almost as many prayers of protection from evil as I can pray for Davros. I was actually hoping to get near enough to Itzal to use one on him, in case Medonius has some form of mind control over him, but since he seems always to summon and run it does not seem likely. Is there an arcane way of anchoring Itzal to this plane, so that he can not step into another dimension and get away? Also, you are the only one that has seen Medonius. What does he look like? You say that he is more than an imp, how so? Since we sound like we are in agreement that he is the true threat, how are we going to deal with him when he is tired of hiding behind Itzal?" Malgant knows he is rambling on, but the questions burn in his mind. Itzal's summonings are becoming more powerful, and what are they to do if next time he leads with a fireball that hurts all of them at once, mounts and adventurers alike. Malgant's priority would be to save his companions first, but many of the animals are becoming like old friends to him now, the more he travels with them and learns their personalitys. He can understand how Arminas can spend an entire day out alone in the wild with just his animal friends and not lack company, and Malgant can't even talk to them. Snapping back to the present, Malgant finishes lamely," Sorry for all the questions, I just want to know what to expect so that I can help when the time comes." Company on the Road Thursday September 13th, 2007 5:31:24 PM Note a barbarian is only fatigued for the duration of the encounter in which he rages. Desolute would no longer be fatigued at the end of combat.
Malgrant urges the group to get moving, fearing the invisible wizard could listen in to any made plans. Soon enough the group is several miles down the road and discussion begins in earnest about what to do first.
Making to Jarlwolf to report to Madam Dulcet seems to be the first agreed upon destination. Then to Ivy's and finally to Itzal anscestral home. Davros reminds the group that Itzal's family is quite wealthy and therefore politically powerful. Sanctioned leagality to go against him should be sought.
For the next few days the group will be on the road and since they posses Itzal's spellbook, he will almost certainly try to regain the most prized possession of any wizard.
Malgrant asks about medonius and Davros relays what he saw. He appeared as an older almost translucent man, perhaps in his 40's. He had long hair, nearly a foot, past his shoulder. His hair was meticulously kept and pin straight. He was clean shaven and all in all a thoroughly handsome man. He wore a traveling coat over a well tailored shirt and riding leathers.
The group journies towards Jarlswolf for the remainder of the day. As the day wears on towards closure, Arminas spots a small two wagon merchant group ahead several hundred yards. They have pulled to the side of the road and already constructed a healthy fire and have hung several lanterns. A man can just be seen from this distance at the front hitches, probably working on unharnessing the horses.
Arminas d20+10=24 d20+17=24 d20+15=32 Thursday September 13th, 2007 7:02:36 PM
Arminas looks upon the road, using hand lens to find any clues of Itzal's passage. Soon though, it gets near dark and he see's company on the road ahead.
"There are wagons ahead, they make camp for the night. Perhaps we should find a place to camp also, it will be dark before long. First though, it would be good to hear if any passed them by recently. Perhaps Itzal travels along this very road ahead of us."
Walking up to the man unharnessing the horses, Arminas says:
"Hello friend, nice horses you have here."
Arminas places his hand upon the horse, and pats it gently.
"Tell me, have you seen anyone else travel by recently. In particular, we are looking for a young lad who schools in Rowena. He is traveling towards Jarlwolf this day."
Arminas listens carefully and looks for unusual activity as he speaks with the man.

Harvest Thursday September 13th, 2007 8:33:54 PM
"Peace be with you," Harvest Moon greets the persons of the merchant wagons. But her thoughts are far away, her expression lost in a frown.
"Have you seen tracks that might belong to Itzal Jerse, Arminas Calaelen? Even using the road it seems unlikely that he would proceed to Jarlwolf more quickly than we."
"And yet I would not doubt that he has somehow found a way to proceed us. Have you not noticed that twice Itzal Jerse and the Invisible Melonius have been able to learn of our movements and place themselves ahead of us in our path. And despite our collective vigilance, they have also managed to take us by surprise."
"Yours is the realm of arcane magics, Davros Sapphiredge," she says, "can you hazard a guess as to how this might be done? Understanding such a thing might help in taking the measure of what we face."
Davros Thursday September 13th, 2007 10:13:33 PM
Davros is about to launch into a long speech, but stops. "I only hope my knowledge is up to the task. Itzal seems to be gaining power each time we face him. Or else he was holding back, and shows more each time. Regardless, Harvest you make me feel like a novice! Of course he could be scrying upon us. He would be able to see with such a spell but not hear. With a simple lock of hair or minor possession of any one of us, stopping it would be almost impossible. I have not yet mastered the spell which could block him from doing this."
"Malgant, I will answer your questions as best I am able. There is a way to prevent his dimension door, but it is also beyond my abilities. Maybe I should spend some time at that school myself! I am not entirely sure Medonius is a threat yet. We shall have to wait and see."

Lorth Friday September 14th, 2007 9:02:05 AM
Lorth dismounts Tobiasz quickly and walks over to the merchants. "Greeting travelers", Lorth offers his hand to the eldest merchant, "I am Lorth Paladin of Gargul. Please to make you aquaintance." He waits for a reply, if non is forthcoming he returns to his horse.

After catching his breath, he will return the horse with a nod. (Sorry, I was reading the rage part, and got to fatigued, so I looked up fatigue, without going back and finishing the line under rage.)
He will slip into the shadows of the night, just in case the merchants are not only out to sell items. but maybe aquire them as well. Desolute is not the most trusting person in the world, perhaps that is the reason he is alone and still alive.
IF everything is well, he will come out later and join his friends. He guards his words before he says them, so as not to insult others further, but he still speaks his mind. "You are all still ignorant of true evil, we have something he wants. He will take something we want." He looks toward Florin, "I strongly suggest we check on your woman first, unless there is something more important in this world then her, not in the group, because that is what he is going after to deal with us." After a moment, he adds, "That is what I would do anyway, as well as...." The last remains unsaid, out of courtesy.

The caravan is spotted, and oddly it is Arminas who boldly approaches. Harvest and Lorth accompany the ranger, while Desolute disappears. The dwarven warrior chooses a third option.
He remains mounted in the road, some 40' from the wagons - visible, non-threatening, but still somewhat vigilant.

The Merchant Ramclis d20+12=23 Saturday September 15th, 2007 11:19:35 AM
Arminas finds signs of passage all over the road, by horses, wagons and the boot prints of about every noble race that walks the Wold. This, the major road lying between Rowena and Jarlswolf is heavily travelled. The ranger, though has a very discerning eye and is fairly certain nothing he is looking at is fresher than 6 hours.
During the ride, Harvest asks about how Itzal might seem to always be ahead of them. The question at first puts Davros off, but he answers readily enough and the answers are many and a bit disturbing.
Was Itzal holding back in earlier confrontations, unwilling to tip his hand? Has Mendonius been the true talent behind Itzal's power surge and would this invisible man confront them directly if they continued on thier current path?
Desolute feels Ivy could be in serious danger. they have something of Itzal's and the man's thinking puts Itzal at taking something they value.
When the group spies the caravans, Arminas simly continues up the road and introduces himself to the man tending the horses. Harvest moves with him, as does Florin and Lorth.
Desolute slips off Darkfire and takes to the ditch a the side of the road for cover from watchful eyes.
Bralin simply pulls up 40' short and remains alert, kind of. It apparently has been a long a wearing day for the dwarf.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The man at the front of the team spies the 4 riders and moves to a position in front of his horses. One hand holding the lead stallions bridle and the other atop the butt of a light mace on a hip sling. His face is friendly, but cautious and he intercepts Arminas's approach at 8' from the horses, with a upward nod of is chin and a neutral toned "Evening good masters."
Introductions are made, He eases at Harvest, becoming less defensive and when Lorth identifies himself, the man sweeps into a low bow. "Master Paladin. I am but your humble servant. My name is Pratt, Wagon Driver for the merchant Ramclis." He looks over his shoulder towards the fire behind the wagons and notes two more men, or rather a man and a boy looking around towards him. "Ahh, master Ramclis and yonng Ramclis. Allow me to introduce to you Lorth, most holy paladin of Gargul."
The other man, in his forties perhaps, raises his hand and with a great jovial grin. A fine evening it has turned to be. I would be honored if I could share a fire and meal with you this night." [Diplomacy 23]
Ramclis gestures towards a fire, where several logs with seats cut into them have been placed in a triangle formation about the campfire. Seated in two of about 12 places is a woman and another man. The woman also in her forties is attractive if plain in a travelling cloak, her auburn hair falls about her shoulders and a ring adorns her left ring finger. Her eyes are a bit cautious, but warm towards the group as a whole. The other man is strong of arm and chest, in his twenties and wears a chain shirt, worn but cared for and a battle axe is buried into the wood next to him. A Loaded heavy crossbow on his left, he takes the group in with a warriors eye. His shoulders drop slightly as he exhales and chews his lower lip.
Harvest d20+14=25 d20+14=18 Saturday September 15th, 2007 12:15:55 PM
"Peace be with you," Harvest again greets the members of the small caravan. "Merchant Ramclis," the brown girl takes in the cheery warmth of the fire, "it would be our honor to partake of your company as well as your gracious offer of a meal." She lifts her eyes from the merchant to take in, momentarily, the road and its environs outside the small circle of wagons, both a prelude to the words she is about to speak as well as a precaution in and of itself. (Spot 25, Listen 18)
"But I fear that our presence here may place you and yours in undo danger. We have already been set upon twice on this road by a mage who bears against us a grudge. Were he to attack while we were in your midst, your enterprise, or worse yet, your people, might come to harm."
"I am sorry," she turns her eyes to the rest of her companions for what she might glean of their views and feelings from their eyes and outward mien, "as gracious as is your hospitality, I cannot conscience placing the innocent within the path of danger."
Arminas d20+8=15 Saturday September 15th, 2007 11:38:45 PM
The man is put off by Arminas' approach, which perhaps is understandable. He remembers now why Any and Harvest dealt with social situations.
Any, I wonder if or when he will return. I hope he was able to deal with his father's situation.
Well no matter, if the people do not take a liking to him he will deal with the animals. The stallion seems like a fine horse. Arminas turns his attention from the man to the stallion, making calming motions toward it. He attempts to show the horse that he is his friend.
Wild Empathy towards stallion 15 (should have changed attitude from indifferent to friendly)
After making friends with the horse, he talks with Harvest.
"You are right, we should move on and make our own camp. I did not see Itzal's tracks upon the road, so he is likely to either come up behind us or use magic to move ahead."

Pushing On d100=42 Monday September 17th, 2007 4:34:08 PM
Mr Pratt, the identified wagon driver leaves a wearey eye upon Arminas as the ranger runs his hand down hte horses muzzle. Arminas notes the horse is well cared for, if not pushing on in years for the sort of task of pulling a heavily loaded wagon. The animal is easily befriended and also apparently quite use to others. the second horse in the hitch is likewise cared for and considerably younger. Arminas here has no issues befriending the animal though.
Harvest politely declines the invitation from The Merchant Ramclis, the rest of the party affirms the decision and the group moves smartly down the road. To put any really appreciable distance between the caravan of two wagons and them selves the group is forced to hurry along. Even so it will be getting quite dark, well after supper, when the days travel is called to a halt.
Ramclis is a bit disappointed, but says he understands. Directing nearly his entire conversation to Lorth, "That the most holy and chosen of Gargul must surely walk a dangerous path and he is honored to be kept in the thoughts of Lorth as to his safety and that of those in his charge."
The group camps. Stars are out in force under a partly cloudy sky with a Waxing 3/4 moon.
The DM would like a watch order with watch durations. The DM will assume the party is on the side of the road. The DM Assumes PC's do not wear armor, Haversacks, Backpacks, or weapons when sleeping. Horses are are stripped of harness and tact and such asundries. As this is our first night together, please be as detailed as possible as to the sleeping arrangements, tents, bedrolls, sparwled across the wagon ruts in the road..... If this default is erroneous please correct with your post. Take what you will from the fact I ask for such detail.

The half orc barabrian pulls from his haversack his bedroll and places it under some brush for concealment. he is so used to discomfort, short of a gail or a blizzard, there is nothing he feels he can not handle. In his defense, he has yet to meet a desert to be proven wrong. He sleeps off to himself, out of habit, but still withen sight of the others, so that his dreams can be disturbed if they become violent. he sleeps in his armor as well. It is not so heavy he will be fatigued from doing so. His weapons stay close at hand. He watches the others with their mounts, seeing his hasn't one and helps Harvest with her animal. He seems experienced enough with them. He will take whichever watch Harvest is also on.
Malgant Monday September 17th, 2007 5:25:08 PM
Malgant moves on past the caravan and its wagons, still lost in thought. How was Itzal knowing their moves. He somehow already knew he had been expeled from school, yet he was headed toward the school when he met them. When the group camps for the night, Malgant helps set up the campsite and sets his blanket and backpack aside. He will take the first watch, and when it ends and it is his turn to rest he will cast magic vestment on his cothes for that"added feeling of protection" while he sleeps. His sword is never more than an arms length away, and his belt with its pouches is also one of the first things he would grab if awakened abruptly.

The hour of seven. Rise would be early in the morning. Watch, for some, should begin equally early.
"Let us begin a watch even now and maintain such even up to the time we depart," Harvest Moon suggests. "It would be prudent for at least two of us to devote their full energies to a careful watch even though others may be awake during the evening or the early morning before departure."
"Protector Malgant and Davros Sapphiredge can watch for three hours until the Hour of Ten. Arminas Calaelen and Paladin Florin Jadenth can then waken and watch for three hours until the Hour of One. After that, Desolute and I will take the watch until the Hour of Four, whereupon Bralin Stoneminder and Paladin Lorth can watch during the waking hours until the Hour of Seven when we depart."
Harvest Moon sleeps in her clothing, the outdoors are not conducive to bedclothes. It is times such as this when she misses her old and dirty sack dress. She lays her bedroll a goodly distance off the road, and with gentle Fyrda nearby, retires early. This must be a vigilant night. Such nights as these thoughts of Anthos come to her with the most poignant pain. But it is such thoughts that draw from the night a greater seriousness of things.

As Davros begins his watch with Malgant, he sets an alarm spell upon the camp centered to cover as many as possible. He sets his bedroll within the campsite selected by Arminas and shares in the offered food. "So, Malgant what shall we discuss while we keep watch? The comforts of an Inn? The evil of Itzal? Have I ever introduced you to Whiskers?" A clean rat crawls out of Davros' robe and stretches like it has just woken up from a long nap. The rat then crawls up to his shoulder and begins looking about in a very serious manner as if on guard duty himself.

A wordless nod affirms both the watch list suggested by Harvest, and Arminas' plan to watch from the vantage of a tree branch. Neither suggestion in unusual.
Bralin also removes and cleans his own armor, and then puts it back on. Like Desolute, the dwarven warrior will sleep in his armor. He keeps his axe close at hand. The rest of his equipment is piled at his feet.
During his watch, he moves about the campsite, checking horses and equipment. He works to keep his path and timings random, so as not to fall into a pattern. He also pauses, and random intervals, to watch and listen.

"Can we not all learn from each other? Perhaps it is Florin then who will learn more from you. I do not know. I only know that if you have nothing to learn from someone, it is time to take leave of them. Boredom is more treacherous than Itzal or any enemy for that matter."
Desolute (Third Post) Tuesday September 18th, 2007 3:23:22 PM
His expression goes from one of irritation to one of confusion. "What does boredom or teaching have to do with watch? I did not say I could not or was not willing to learn, I said I take watch seriously. That does not invlove learning, teaching or boredom. I will stick with the watch I have chosen, if you wish to remain awake during it, I won't stop you, just don't distract me from my job."
Malgant Tuesday September 18th, 2007 4:50:07 PM
" I do not think I have ever met Whiskers. He takes his watch time seriously, doesn't he? We can talk about anything you like. The thing that has been most puzzling me all day is something Harvest, I think it was, mentioned. How does Itzal seem to know what we know all the time? Is there a magical way for him to listen to and watch us? Or could it be that Medonius can travel great distances quickly and watches us while invisible and reports what he sees and hears to Itzal, to fuel the boys rage?" Malgant shakes his head, still no closer to figuring out how the boy knows so much. Later he begins to talk strategy with Davros, to see if there is a way to foil Itzal's escapes and bring this chase to an end. " What would you suggest we do to stop Itzal from surprising us as seems to be his best tactic and then teleporting away after he drops a bunch of summoned critters in our lap? Those Apes nearly had Desolute today, and possibly Harvest too. We can't keep going on luck to survive his attacks. I have heard that the Dispeling you used today can be cast to counter an enemy caster's spell as it is cast. The priests went into some detail about it as a good way to protect others without causing harm to an enemy, simply negating him. Could this work? Something else I was thinking was that Arminas ans Desolute both seem to be adept at blending with the terrain. Maybe we could have themAhead of us and a bit to our flanks and surprise Itzal for a change, before he can zip away on us. Maybe we should all talk about this in the morning."
Welcomed sunshine Tuesday September 18th, 2007 9:13:28 PM
Arminas guides the party offr the road and into the trees themselves, to a small clearing of about 30' radius. The Paladins dismiss thier respective steeds as the others more mundanely set to preparing thiers for the night. Harvest speaks of always having someone alert as thier sole task. Others would set and break camp. She rattles off a quick set. Protector Malgant and Davros Sapphiredge can watch for three hours until the Hour of Ten.
Arminas mentions his lessened need to sleep and that he will start his watch at the Hour of One and remain awake ever after that. Someone will need to take his spot from Ten to One with Florin.
Davros and Malgrant are the first watch, though everyone else is awake for most of it's beginning. Setting camp, putting down horses, eating and settling in.
Arminas suggests no fire be built and none take an opssing position, by the hour of 9 the group is standing in near complete blackness. Beyond the small encampment, the canopy of the full great trees of the wood, blot nearly all light. Those without darkvision can see nothing beyond the perimeter of thier own camp. The forest is like a great black curtain pulled in a circle about you. The sounds of the night, crickets, the russle of racoons and chipmunks along branches and through ground cover are everywhere.
Desolute takes exception to Arminas's comment about him being on the watch with Florin and thus learning something. They banter and argue, neither getting satisafaction as pride collides with misinterpretation.
Malgrant sets an Alarm spell, it sounds by the Hour of Ten. The minotaur easily locates the reason, a squirrel. Alarm sounds a mental or audible alarm each time a creature of Tiny or larger size enters the warded area or touches it. The woods are filled with such animals and while most will not come to close, they can almost certainly smell the food and will move in to take a peak.
The deeper night falls, Arminas climbs into a tree, though in such a black surrounding the trick is a little more difficult than he may have liked. Soon enough he is settled. Night passes peacefully if not slowly.
While the dwarf and Lorth stand vigilant watch, the rest pack camp and make ready for another day. The group travels onward towards Jarlswolf and is making good time on the road. Itzal is a continuous topic of conversation. How to battle him? How does he get his information on where and when to strike. How does he get ahed of them? How did he already know about the school? Answers however, are not nearly as easy to arrive at as the questions.
Davros Tuesday September 18th, 2007 10:12:50 PM
Davros is up early and studying his spellbook. "As for Itzal, the questions will be answered in time. He will not elude us forever."

Florin Jadenth Wednesday September 19th, 2007 12:19:13 AM
Florin shakes his head at the arguement over watches when it happens but says nothing, taking his watch that was commented as his time.
In the morning Florin quickly readies himself for travel, taking a few mins for prayer and practice. As the group rides along and talks over things, he still remains quiet and thoughtful on things as there are alot of questions and few answers. Florin can't help but break into a small smile as he thinks of Ivy back where the group is traveling, waiting for his return. He wonders how the wedding plans are coming also and how soon that might come about.
(Not sure if much info was passed to you about Florin and Ivy's wedding coming up.)
Congrats...Um none would be the amount. Could you email mikalus30@hotmail.com
Harvest d20+14=31 d20+14=22 Wednesday September 19th, 2007 2:46:54 AM
Harvest Moon greets Alemi in the early light of morning. She rises from prayer. She pats the nose of gentle Fyrda, so soft and broad.
"Now that we have begun down this road, I do not believe that we can afford to relax our vigilance or to engage in diversion until the capture of Itzal Jerse," she says as the group prepares to depart. "To do so will draw danger to what innocents may be about when the boy chooses to attack."
"We must needs inform Madam Dulcet of what we have found. But after that, I believe we should strike straight to the Jerse home. Perhaps the fields outside of Itzal Jerse's home would provide a suitable place upon which to meet him."
"I am sorry, Paladin Florin Jadenth, but this would mean nothing but the briefest notes to Ivy while we are in Jarlwolf."
On the road there is time for little but vigilance. Traveling the paths of the Wold. It is the calling of the Walker. And yet, the shadow of this boy's anger prevents Harvest Moon from any satisfaction or joy as the miles pass to miles.

Lorth Wednesday September 19th, 2007 7:59:32 AM
In the morning Lorth offers a brief prayer to Gargul then summons Tobiasz. He then carefully stows his gear and mounts up, ready to leave.
Lorth listens to Harvest and nods his agreement with her ideas.
Bralin Wednesday September 19th, 2007 9:28:53 AM
Bralin stands watch carefully, although his armor weighs heavy this morning. He is still viligant enough to understand nearly every member of the group must pray each morning. "We must spend two hours each morn in preparation," he notes. "As groups alternate 'tween breakfast, breaking camp, and prayers."
Following his own advice, Bralin goes about feeding himself and Mica, and generally breaking camp while Harvest and the others pray. When they are done, he settles down in quiet study of the Orb, retrieving his own spells.
One of which he uses immediately to eliminate the tiredness of the night [Lesser Restoration].
At last, the group is ready to resume the trail. Bralin assumes his customary spot at the rear, watching the backtrail.
Arminas d20+10=11 d20+17=30 d20+6=17 d20+6=8 Wednesday September 19th, 2007 10:22:30 AM
Sitting high in the tree, Arminas reaches over and preens Ewan's feathers as the morning light grows. His meditation finished, he prepares for the coming day.
Stepping lightly off the branch, Arminas floats lightly to the ground.
"It seems Itzal must gather strength also. I think Harvest has it right, let us choose the place of confrontation if possible. An open field would be good, as I could ask the plants to hold him fast. Prepare for that."
Arminas prepares Darkfire for travel, and casts a spell to speak with him.
"Darkfire, we ride soon. If I leap down, run towards safety until I call."
Looking up, he speaks to Ewan:
"Ewan, our enemy may be upon the road. Fly high, and signal me if you see people. Make small circles high above them."
Arminas addresses the group.
"I will ride Darkfire out front. Ewan will try and signal me of danger. If Ewan signals, I will jump from Darkfire and move through the forest."

His words go unheeded for the the paladins love, and completely out of character of himself, he hopes he is wrong. I must be growing soft. Well, isn't that what you wanted?[/i] He asks himself? Bah, perhaps less hard, but not soft yet.
He runs out in front of the group as was mentioned the night before and stays off to the right of the road perhaps thirty or so feet. He will hide when he can.
Malgant Wednesday September 19th, 2007 7:54:15 PM
Malgant awakes in the morning and puts on his armor and steps off to the side to pray. The steps of the sword dance do not offer answers this morning, and the questions about how Itzxal knows things ahead of when he should still plauge the priest. Prayers complete Malgant listens to Harvest's interpretation of how they need to conduct themselves in order to protect others around them. Malgant agrees, to a point. He is not planning on spending an extended amount of time waiting for Itzal to act. If the boy does not tip his hand in a few days, more direct action will probably be necessary. But She has a sound plan for now.

The Eagle has Circled d100=63 Wednesday September 19th, 2007 8:22:52 PM
The group breaks and moves. Bralin banishes the fatigue that had set in and takes up position at the rear of the column. Arminas speaks with his horse and companion before taking a point position. Both seem to understand as far as they are able and Ewan takes wing into the lightly clouded sky.
Lorth and Florin are the lead horses, followed by Malgrant and Harvest, the Davros and Bralin. Desolute moves off the road some 30' to get to the first part of the treeline in order to move in a hidden fashion. As the rest of the company must move at Malgrants slower pace, Desolute does not to sacrifice his skills to keep up.
Just past midday and that breaking of the mid rest, Ewan begins circling. The eagle is likely near to a mile up the road which is arching in a great left hand curve. The group will be in a more clear position to see what the eagle has found in about 15-20 minutes.
DM Note on multi posting Wednesday September 19th, 2007 8:27:38 PM
I have no problem per say, but it can be distracting to go through 3-6 posts of two characters going back and forth.
I invite the use of the Giggling Ghost for this. It is an in Character locale, any character at any time can declare they are going. Planning sessions, strategies, in character hash outs, I think the Ghost a perfect place for.
not saying everytime you have the need to respond to someone but if you think it could easily lead to quite a few back and forths. Its great. Also keeps it in Character and on the site.
IMHO
Florin Jadenth Wednesday September 19th, 2007 8:45:44 PM
When Florin hears the comment from Harvest and smiles abit, sad that he won't beable to spend abit more time with Ivy but also understand, "I understand Harvest. I'm pretty sure she will understand too, she has handled everything happen so far pretty well."
Florin keeps his eyes and ears open as the group travels along. He mainly allow those who are better skilled with spotting things do such tasks though as his skill lays more with the combat.
(I will get that info out on the wedding and such to you asap.)
Harvest d20+14=28 d20+14=29 Wednesday September 19th, 2007 9:02:49 PM
"Arminas Calaelen?" Harvest Moon hitches forward in the saddle and raises a hand to her forehead, screening her sight from the light of the sun. "Is that not, Ewan circling above? Does that mean that she has found something?"
Harvest reaches to her haversack for a wand. With a word she applies a layer of magic armor about herself, and about Fyrda as well. Then, replacing the wand within her haversack, she slips from the saddle, walking instead in front of her loyal friend, leading by the reins.
"Be alert," Harvest Moon warns unnecessarily.

Arminas is looking up at Ewan when Harvest approaches.
"Yes, I know. It may be an innocent traveler, so be careful of that as well. I will move through the trees along the road, over there (he points to the side opposite Desolute). I will try and keep just ahead of you."
Arminas moves off through the trees, using his recently acquired Woodland Stride feat.

Malgant 2nd post Wednesday September 19th, 2007 11:31:04 PM
Malgant calls to mind the highest prayer granted to him today by Domi. He calls to mind the words for Dispel Magic and ready's them to counter Itzal's first spell should it be the young mage that Ewan has spotted up ahead.
Lorth Thursday September 20th, 2007 8:12:49 AM
Hearing Harvest's warning about Ewan circling ahead. Lorth raises his lance and couches it to his side. His shield comes up and covers the other side of his body as he urges Tobiasz forward with his knees. Lorth proceeds ahead cautiously, being sure not to get to far ahead of the rest of the party.

Bralin receives the multiple calls for renewed alertness without expression.
The group is aware, yet it is too early to tell what, if any, defensive measures will be required.
The dwarf keeps Mica in position, and watches the backtrail as they all move ahead.
