The Game is Afoot

Olaf is able to protect himself and Rendal from the elements. Aiden does the same for himself, without quite realizing how it was accomplished.

[OOC: Everyone else, please tell me how you're coping with the cold or we'll need to start making Fortitude checks.]

Although you remain alert for treachery from foes or nature, you see nothing untoward for several hours. Finally, late in the afternoon, Aiden comes across the tracks you have been looking for--a group of a dozen or more humanoids, moving quickly, heading for the Jagged Jaw Mountains.

Olaf has a spell for Yanosh, too, so you go through the day with minimal discomfort from the elements.

You keep a careful watch, but see nothing in the landscape that doesn't belong there.

Aiden has discovered tracks, but it is already late in the day. You follow them for as long as you are able, but soon you must make camp--or attempt to continue in the dark.

Aiden responded to Olaf's inquiry, "a group of ork warriors...once of Twin Tusks." Olaf could hear the definite note of respect within Aiden's voice. "They are comfortable in the wylds, and know how to use it for their best advantage. The Tundra Walkers are supposed to have the item we seek..."

"But let's make camp..." Eying hopefully the best site, Aiden looks to the others, "similar watch times as before?" his bright eyes looking at each of his comrades. They were so different than those he had first started with, Frigga, Garrett, Bohdi...

It just seemed like he was the last of that group that had fought to become adults...He never thought of himself as being nostalgic, but yet, he sometimes wished for those days...

While making dinner for whatever the hunters brought in to eat. Rendal starts to talk about his past and performs a few feets he has learned throwing balls and the story of saving the town from rats.

"I thought it was high time for me to talk about my past to you. I came from the same area as Bohdi. Being from Zaran City area I am not as used to this cold as you might guess. My father was a noble sort who fought in the recent war in those parts and sadly did not make it back to me and my mom. Mom was hard pressed to find a good father type role model for me and of course wanting more attention form others to make up for my loss I went out in the city. Noticing these Colorful signs with bold lettering announcing The Famous Drake Bon. I of course needed to see him and see what all the fuss was about. The gnomes of the area were quite well off and paid Drake Bon quite a bit for his shows. His shows were quite entertaining and seeing how well he did compared to how my mom and I were just getting by. I of course learned my trade under him. I traveled for a bit and saved a town from rats and dire rats. After learning from him and adventuring some more I got a message from some gnomes to give to Bodhi and here I am"

You decide to make camp, and with Aiden's skills are able to find a good place for it. You set up watches and hunker down against the cold.

As you relax by the campfire, Rendal relates some of his history and Aiden thinks of past companions, now gone their own paths.

During first watch, the wind gains strength. It is not snowing, but it is difficult to tell by looking; the wind is picking up so much fallen snow from the ground that it looks like a minor blizzard.

Most of you enjoy magical protection from the cold, however, and you find that putting your backs to the wind is enough to prevent its chill from creeping into your bones. By the middle of second watch, the "blizzard" has died down to occasionan flurries, and by dawn the wind has died down altogether. The first golden rays of the sun stab sharply over the horizon, striking a glitter from the landscape and making you blink.

When Aiden goes to pick up the trail again, however, he finds that only the barest traces remain. Though no fresh snow fell last night, the wind was strong enough to obscure much of the trail he was following. Tracking today is going to be much more difficult.

You breakfast and break camp, and are soon on your way again. Yanosh helps Olaf with castin the Endure Elements spells, and now the entire party is protected from the cold.

With Rendal's song to help them, Yngvar and Aiden are able to find what remains of the trail. There isn't much left of it. It can be followed, but it is slow going. The trackers must search carefully, ever on the lookout for the slightest clue. You lose the trail for yards at a stretch, picking it up only by heading in the same general direction and watching for signs.

After a morning of slow but steady progress, you have followed the tracks onto a vast snowfield. No rocks or vegetation break the monotony of glittering white. The effect is all but blinding, and you have to squint to look at it. Nevertheless, it is clear that the tracks are headed in that direction.

You continue to follow. As before, you lose and regain the trail several times, continuing to follow its general direction. During one of the periods where you have temporarily lost the trail, Aiden suddenly notices something not-quite-right about the patch of snow ahead. He takes a second glance, and realizes that, a few feet in front of the party, there is a crevasse, covered over by a very thin crust of snow. Stepping on the crust would mean breaking through to a nasty fall.

Clearly, you will have to find a way around, or over, the crevasse. The question is--are there more of them out there?

Rendal turns his mind to crevasses. With very little effort, he can recall numerous songs and tales in which people died tragic and/or gruesome deaths in crevasses. Other than "don't fall into them", though, the songs and tales are a little short on practical advice.

Yngvar is wondering whether there's any way to tell where the tracks might be headed. You can tell that they are headed for the Jagged Jaws, but the mountains cover a pretty big chunk of territory. It would be difficult to tell exactly where the Tundra Walkers are going.

Olaf tries to assist, but doesn't have as much knowledge of the natural world as some of his companions [OOC: finding crevasses is a Survival check].

Aiden begins finding a way around the crevasse, moving to his right. The party slowly follows. You have gone about 50 feet when Heyoka and Fisher find another crevasse, also covered with a thin crust of snow, crossing your path.

You can try to work your way around this one, too, or you can go back and try to go around the first crevasse to the left. Perhaps that way will be clearer.

Aiden was slowly getting irritated with how things were working out. He knew little of the group he now adventured with. True they fought by his side, but other than silent Nauth'iz, he was ignorant of their skills.

Rendal sang and those songs made him feel good as well as do a little magic.

Heyoka can talk to the bear.

Yanosh fought, but with his deal with the god of the dead, who knew what new skills he had gained.

Yngvar has shown some healing and abilities of a blessed warrior, which he now denies, and some tracking knowledge.

Olaf seemed to know a few things like the thief, Neco, but he said he knew a little more.

It seemed like everyone liked talking in riddles or hide what they can do...

And he was 'leader'...more out of default due to Garrett's death, and lack of return, than anything else.

If he wasn't worried about how far the thin ice traced back to where they were, he would have thrown a heavy rock in the middle just to crack the surface like an egg and let some of his anger out, since his patience had obviously disappeared some time ago.

Yanosh continues offering his support to Aiden, and Rendal continues singing.

Olaf volunteers to be lowered into the first crevasse.

Accordingly, you break the snow crust that covers it. The snow crumbles and falls into the large crack, exposing its shape. It is about 100 feet long, and about 30 feet wide at its widest point. Looking down, you can see that it is about 20 feet deep.

Olaf is then lowered into the crevasse, a bizarre sort of "ice fishing." It is very cold in the crevasse, with the ice walls radiating cold on either side. You are glad of your magical protection against the elements. The wide blue sky shrinks to a narrow ribbon directly overhead. Natural sounds are strangely muffled, and you can barely hear Rendal's continuing song.

When you reach the bottom, you can clearly see that the Tundra Walkers did not come this way. The bottom of the crevasse is very uneven, with numerous ridges and outcroppings. It would be nearly impossible to travel along it, and completely impossible to move through without knocking some of the outcroppings down. However the Walkers got through the snowfield, it wasn't down here.

Thursday October 11th, 2007 12:21:56 AM

You pull Olaf out of the crevasse. Yngvar suggests backtracking, and Yanosh agrees, so you retrace your steps to the beginning of the first crevasse.

Yngvar wants to see if the tracks Aiden has been following are a false trail, but he can't even see them. The wind blew pretty hard last night, and much of the sign of the Walkers' passing has been eradicated. Is the trail a false one? It's very hard to tell.

Thinking it over, however, you realize that without last night's winds, laying a false trail would have been extremely difficult. The country around here is fairly open; it would be difficult to hide the passage of a group of 15-20 orcs. About the only way it would make sense to leave a false trail is if the Walkers somehow knew the wind would kick up after they had passed.

Which is, of course, impossible. Nobody can control the weather.

Right?

Shaking off such thoughts, you begin working your way around the first crevasse, this time moving to your left. You get a little farther than you did last time, but you do encounter another crevasse. This one cuts diagonally into your path--from behind you and to your left, to ahead of you and to your right.

His eyes coldly stared at the dilemna that stood ahead of them.

"It could be a trap..." he grumbled. Aiden kept silent to the idea that perhaps those of the Uroc Frio had set them up onto this path to lead them to their doom. But that would be dishonorable, something VERY UNLIKE that tribe.

He took the air deep into his nostrils, and tried to let the settling cold pierce into his lungs. Sometimes simple jolts such as that could provide clarity of the mind, one of the many great things about the outdoors, things so simple yet involved, that city dwellers such as Bohdi would never understand.

Rubbing his chin, his eyes narrowed even further. It was simple, and made sense...in a strange manner.

And, it was absolutely ironic...

He began to chuckle to himself even as he mutters to himself. "I wonder if the Ice Witch is leading us because the others had accepted her gift."

It DID make sense afterall...and it did tweak the tracker's warped sense of humor. She possessed the magic to have created the chaos that happened, cover or set up fake traps, and lead them to their deaths. BUT none of those who had originally taken her gifts were still with the group, or for all Aiden knew, were alive.

"Everyone be ready..." he muttered, "we will have to set camp soon" (OOC: I'm assuming that it is getting late...if not, delete the last sentence)

Rendal looks about for evidence of magical effects. The only effect you see is the fact that you and your companions are quite comfortable, despite the biting cold. There is no trace of anything magical in the snowfield or crevasses. In your store of bardic knowledge, you remember many tales of dangerous terrain that the heroes can pass through because they know the safe path. Could the Tundra Walkers have such knowledge of this field?

Yanosh suspects a trap, and looks suspiciously about him. You see a wide, open expanse of snow, with forest around and behind you, and the Jagged Jaws ahead of you. You see no signs of traps--or indeed, of anything man-made.

Aiden wonders aloud about making camp, but it is quite early to be doing that--barely noon. Here on the left side of the first crevasse, you have seen a few signs that the Tundra Walkers passed this way. But, as before, the signs are few and far between, and it is easy to lose track of them.

Thanking him in her own way, she makes Goodberries, and offers 2 or 3 to him, which he gratefully licks out of her other hand (than the one she has the rest of the Goodberries in.)

Aiden listened to the comments and suggestions from the others.

Right then, it was actually out of his hands because the orks were either using a skill beyond his means (OOC: heck I lost the trail with the split, and it doesn't seem like he's going to get it back).

This obviously meant magic...and hopefully one of the others could provide some sort of clue on what to do next.

Heyoka, coming back to herself, creates a few Goodberries for herself and her companion. For the moment, she has nothing to add to the search for the Tundra Walkers.

Still suspicious, Yanosh tries to ascertain if there is anything invisible nearby, but even the special sight granted him by Gargul reveals nothing more than what is seen with the naked eye.

Rendal still suspects magic, but can see no evidence of it.

Yngvar suggests simply moving ahead as best as you can.

Aiden takes a moment to listen to his wunjos and ponder the situation. You are certain that the Tundra Walkers came this direction. They must have moved across this snowfield--somehow. Perhaps they had magical means, or perhaps they simply had a very accurate map of the crevasses and were able to follow a safe route through them. Under ordinary circumstances, you would be able to simply follow their tracks. However, last night's wind has all but obliterated their trail.

As Yngvar suggested, your best option may be to simply forge ahead as best you can and hope to pick up the Walkers' trail on the other side of the snowfield. You believe it is quite do-able, although it may take time.

[OOC: spotting a crevasse before falling into it is a DC 10 Survival check. You have party members who can make that check in their sleep, so falling into these things isn't going to be an issue. The main issue is the time it's going to take to get across, and that's going to depend on what strategy you follow.]

"We are looking for the Tundra Walkers...they are raiders from Twin Tusks, a former ork village. They carry the Shield of Domi..."

Looking around to the others, "unless someone knows of a better method, I will go first to try and make sure there are no weak spots. Suggestions?"

A slight quirk appeared, "unless someone can thicken the ice or find weak spots..."

DM Kathy

You decide to forge ahead as best you can. You rope yourselves together, and Aiden takes the lead. You begin working your way across the snowfield.

You encounter one crevasse after another--some crossing your path, some cutting it at an angle, others right beside you. Each time, you must stop and figure out a way around. It is slow going.

Every once in a while, Aiden or Heyoka sees the trail of the Walkers again, moving through the snowfield. Inevitably, you lose the trail shortly thereafter, but at least it shows you are moving (more or less) in the right direction.

And there is no chance of actually being lost. The snowfield is quite open; it is quite easy to keep the Jagged Jaws before you. All you need to do is work your way around the crevasses.

Under ordinary circumstances, traveling the distance across the snowfield would take less than an hour. But these aren't ordinary circumstances; the field is essentially a maze. You start around noon, and the sun is beginning to set as you emerge.

At least, you think you are emerging. At any rate, it has been nearly thirty minutes since you last encountered a crevasse. At the very least, the ground should be solid enough to camp on.

Between them, Yngvar, Aiden, and Rendal find a good spot to camp. It's a bit more exposed than the tactically-minded among you really like, but it would take at least another hour to reach the nearest stretch of forest. So you dig in and make do.

Heyoka offers Endure Elements spells, but the party is protected until tomorrow. [OOC: The spell description of Light isn't clear on what happens if the object is broken. I'm going to rule that the spell remains with the largest piece, and the rest of them go dark.]

Olaf watches and listens, but notices nothing out of the ordinary.

You share a meal and set watches. You are all tired, and it is difficult not to be a little discouraged. You're pretty sure you've lost time and distance on the Tundra Walkers, and their trail isn't going to get any clearer over time. Many more delays like this, and you may lose your line on the Shield of Domi. Again.

Your rest is undisturbed. Around midnight, clouds begin rolling in, gradually obscuring the stars. This time, at least, there is no accompanying wind. However, the weather-wise among you think a snowstorm is on its way.

You awaken to a cold, gray dawn, and set out once again on your journey.

Aiden looks at the others as they prepare to march on the day. Something was needed in order to lift their spirits, and then his eyes drew upon Yanosh and Rendal. A slight grin appeared as he continued to prepare for the long trek. Slowly he made his way to the two of them, his eyes shining brightly at the idea.

"We need something to move us..." he started. "Perhaps some stories of great battles and victories" as Aiden directly addressed the two of them, "especially with the two of you coming from different tribes, they would not be the same, no?"

He listens to their answers, and then moved onto Heyoka and Yngvar. "Your skills have been of help..." as he looked the two of them straight in the eyes. "But we have far to go...if either have ideas on how to track the Shield or the Walkers quicker, or to protect from the coming storm...let me know."
