You notice that the ground leading up to the cave is broken, uneven ground making running difficult. There is a gradual incline from where you are to the cave entrance.

Watching the cave entrance none of you can see any further movement in the shadows.

"THEY DISAPPEARED! Tell everyone they've disappeared, Angus!" Xenia's whisper carries all the intensity of a scream as it travels down the Message spell.

She applies the Oil to her arrows and quickly steps back, melting into Wynn's shadow.

Angus is shocked at the sudden appears of the cave so close and mumbles "It almost feels like we dimension doored forward. Everyone find cover while Xenia scouts."

After the invisible Xenia relates that the devils are missing he relates the information to the rest of the shields "Xenia lost sight of our icey friends, be wary. Can anyone tell if their is a forebiddance still in place? I will attempt a detect magic."

Angus moves to Q6 and casts detect magic and concentrates on the cave entrance.

Still holding the potion handed him by the dark skinned red-head, Wynn takes a step forward. He grimaces at Xenia's news. Prodding the broken, uneven ground gingerly with the tip of his sword, he tries to reconcile what he has just seen and heard with the songs and tales he has heard. (Knowledge History=22)

If he can think of anything informative, he will share it with the party.

Xenia moves carefully into her new location not seeing anything new.

Angus steps up then sees the faint emanation from a set spell then recognizes it as the forbiddance spell.

Belkior moves in beside Bin then casts his spell of protection.

Lang and Sunshine move up closer to the cave entrance looking in to the cave entrance but does not spot anything.

Bin stays in place looking and listening carefully not hearing anything new or seeing anything different.

Syr waits in his current location.

Wynn steps forward while thinking but is unable to recall anything in the songs and tales about this location.

Angus attempts to us the message spell on all the Shields (expect the invisible Xenia, but her sharp ears may pick it up anyways) to relate information "The Forbiddance spell is still in place. Do not go too close to the entrance. Do we want to scout out a back entrance while the Ice demons summon spell wears off."

Angus is curious and talks out loud "Xenia, were the demon in the mouth of the cave because my summoned creatures could not go in the forbiddance?"

Angus look to Syr "I will not forget to troll you once the you know what hits the fan."

Angus casts protection from evil on himself.

OoC: Could you post the Map Locations at which Xenia and Belkior saw the shadows in the Flickering Shadows post?

Also, I'm a bit confused by the map. If each square is 10ft, then shouldn't our icons be smaller? I don't mind the discrepancy, but I'd hate for anything bad to happen to my character because of a misunderstanding of the map.

Angus ponders Xenia's words "I guess we have to assume the mirrors are there. We can use a darkness on them, if we sneak in and cast it. The boney demons we should just wait out and not fight. After finishing the last thought, Angus makes sure he is tucked in behind Lang's shadow.

Once everyone is back Angus will relate "Lets wait out the devils and cast our long term spells for this conflict."

Angus continues "If we have no darkness spell for the mirrors, then we have to go in invisible and break them or turn them. Maybe we can use them on the cleric???"

The protector gives his advice. "I would like to suggest again, we check for a back entrance. Only a stupid individual would leave their back with no exit. We don't want this guy to escape do we? That is what will happen if there is an exit and we didn't bother to look for it."

to search the mountain for a back door would take you a few days.
The movement that you saw in the shadows of the cave entrance was around N8-P9.

OOC: Dominic, as a group we are going to fall back for two minutes of game time to cast additional spells and see if the devils go back to their home plane.

Angus call out to his fellows on the message spell, trusting Xenia to pick up what is going on, since she is invisible "Everyone fall back."

Once everyone has regrouped can suggests "Lets wait out the devils and cast our long term spells. If we have no darkness spell available, I can dimension door half of us inside and past the forbiddance and symbol of death, with Xenia's direction. We will have to all be invisible so that we do not trigger the mirrors. I will then leave to get the balance of the group and then we can recon together in force. By the time I come back with the second group, the first group of Xenia, Syr and Wynn should have taken care of the mirrors. Wynn can you help me with the invisibility spells. How does that sound everyone? Who fights the cleric and how fights the dragon, suggestions? I bet both have spell resistance, but the cleric will be tougher for the spell users, the fighters may want to take him down, that is if the cleric and the dragon fight toghether."

Angus takes a deep breath and waits for everyones response.

Angus will hold casting any spells until he finds out how many invisibility spells Wynn can cast.

Right! 10ft, I forgot. So used to thinking of them as 5ft.

BTW, thanks for reposting. That's much clearer. The Letters don't align with the columns, though. So I've listed movement relative to current position.

Everyone, Please when making your post please state what co-ordinate you will be ending your turn on and if you attack something please state which creature it is.

OOC: Dominic - Please read our last post as we were withdrawing as a group to wait out two minutes to cast spells and power up, in addition to let the bone devil summon spell lasp. We were attempting to NOT engage the devils. Apparently this will not happen and we will have to fight the creatures.

Remember, we only sent Xenia forward to scout originally, but all of us were placed next to the cave mouth. That was also not in our plans or our posting to start.

We will deal with this as you have put forth, just be cognizant of our actions in the future.

Jim - The devils were in process of moving in to attack when you said you were going to pull back. They were not going to let that happen so they decided to attack at that point. In an earlier post I stated that you all were close to the cave entrance when you see it.

Synopsis: The party refuses to be lured into battle with the bone devils, but in turning to go, they are attacked. On the plus side, the Forbidance does not factor into the battle -- so far. The enemy are like large devilish skeletons with barbed tails. They have no weapons. An evil pale blue light glows in their eye sockets (when they are visible). [Note: The new map is on a five foot scale. If you want to niggle yor placement, tell me where you want to be.]

PC Actions

Bin attempts to turn the outsiders, but the Protector's efforts are not sufficient to counter the massive evil that fuels them. [OOC: Your max affected creature is 8 hit dice, right? These are sturdier than that.] Bin remains at Z4

Xenia, who had been hiding, continues to sneak through the shadows. She moves from AD8 to S5.

Angus polymorphs Syr into a troll. He remains at AH4.

Belkior casts his dispel, but the devil he aims it at remains. Perhaps they are called, rather than summoned. Or maybe they are native to this place, or bound to it. It is a mystery. This suggests, you note, that the hedging property of a magic circle spell to keep summoned beings at bay may also not function with respect to these outsiders. Belkior remains at AC4.

Wynn begins to sing a song of inspiration. His song is witty and courageous, and Wynn and his allies all gain an extra +1 [DM fiat and reward for the great verse, excellent job], so that the song bestows a +2 morale bonus to attacks and damage for all who hear it.

However, initiating bardic music is a standard action, and cannot be combined with an attack.

Wynn does use his remaining move action to advance toward Bone Devil 1. [OOC: DM note: These creatures have a 10-foot reach. If you close with more than a five foot move, you may well provoke an AoO as you approach -- because you leave a threatened square when you pass from one square away to adjacent. Since Wynn is not attacking, there is no reason for him to take the AoO. By DM fiat, I'll place him ten feet away from the devil. If it does not move, Wynn can make a five foot step and a full attack next round.] Wynn moves to S6.

Hey! Where's Lang's HP and AC! You've had since last Thursday to post those! Everybody needs to post AC, HP, and spells active every round, please! For example, Lang has a Bless Weapon in effect but failed to note it on his turn. Your kindly substitute DM noticed and let Lang's damage (see below) bypass the Devil's DR anyway. But do not always count on the DM's sweet nature! Make note of ongoing effects!

Lang moves to AF10 and swings at Bone Devil 2. I'm assuming that Lang is not large size or using a reach weapon. As Lang steps from AF9 to AF10, he leaves a threatened square and provokes an AoO from the Devil, who is glad to take a swipe at him with his barbed tail. The Devil hits AC29, and if that hits Lang (it should if Lang's AC is still 24), then Lang takes 11 damage and must make a DC20 fort save or take SIX points of Strength Damage!

Lang steps up and swings! He crits even if his strength is damaged! The Devil suffers a grievous wound, taking 36 damage! And Lang takes 3 points of viscious damage. What is Lang's weapon, by the way, please?

Troll-Syr moves to AF7-AG8 to place himself between Angus and the Devils. [OOC: Please take careful note of the many combat changes that you are granted by Troll form.]

Devil Actions

B3 and B1 move; B2 takes a five foot step back. All three use special abilities. A 10-foot-tall wall of ice appears (see map). Then two more Bone Devils appear on the scene. Note that Bin, Belkior, and Angus cannot see over the ice wall and do not know that more devils appeared (until someone messages them, hint hint). The summoned devils cannot act this round. Note that Lang is flanked.

Wynn notices something odd behind him [Spot=26 Listen=16], as if something or someone is there. He takes evasive action, tumbling to the other side of the nearest bone devil [Tumble=20]. He lashes out with his sword, scoring a near perfect hit on this most hideous adversary. He then prepares to dodge any retribution from the devil [Effective AC=25]

Speaking to the Ranger in front of him. "Lang, I can't get around these guys so either finish off that first one or we double team one of the others. You tell me."

Using the message spell he speaks normally to Angus but all around can hear, "They just brought in two more to my right and left. Get Belk to punch a hole in the wall and then target my position with a fireball! The wall should protect you from the blast." He cringes a bit inside and wonders if the devils will be convinced and spread out a bit more for he and Lang to fight together (bluff 20).

Without moving, Syr uses his now longer arms to reach over and pummel the devil behind Lang (B4) (Att 30,34,29,crit,confirm,25 dam 19,21,18,36,18). Grinning as the first blow lands (Stunning Fist DC 17. For the remainder of this battle, all 1st attacks on undamaged foes will be Stunning Fist) followed up by several more blows and a devastating kick.

OOC: Bin, thanks, I removed the protection from energy per your suggestion. Also, I didn't notice the effects of Wynn's song until later.

Friends, remember to add the +2 morale bonus to hit and attack. That too may apply to the damage Lang did last round as well as this round. I will be very nice and not rule that the bonus damage also applies to the vicious special rebound ability. :-)

If you forget, don't come crying to me later! No do-overs!

And hold onto your PC sheets for now. If I end up needing them, I'll ask. I trust you guys. But do post any info you think is relevant, especially special abilities, immunities, save bonuses, etc. I don't even know all your races, for example, much less classes! But we can wing it for a bit.

The priest says to Belkior, "Please stay near someone that can defend you. Perhaps it has been a week with all the skipping around we have done?" Refering to the enchanted lions they captured.

Bin pulls his light hammer and trots toward T4 and in true Protector fashion prepares to Interpose for Xenia if she is attacked.

DM Sanity note: Interpose: Once per round, the protector can take upon himself any one visible attack that would have affected an ally or object within five feet. The protector can interpose himself in front of a sword blow, an arrow, and even a magic missile, but not in front of an invisible attacker or a mage casting a hold or charm spell -- the attack must be obvious. The power is ineffective against area attacks, like fireballs. The protector must declare who he is protecting when it is his turn. The attack (or save) is not rerolled, but the protector may avoid the attack if he has a better AC or saving throw than the target who would have otherwise been affected.

[OOC: This is the Thursday Nite DM Post. I will make the Friday Nite DM Post on Saturday morning, so that at least we have three DM posts this week. I'll hold off posting on Monday until 11pm or until everyone responds to the Sat post, whichever comes first.]

[OOC: The Bless Weapon comes from an oil supplied just before the battle by a PC I can't remember -- Xenia? Anyhoo, it functions just like the 1st level paladin spell as if cast by a 2nd level caster, so it will last for 20 rounds.]

The Heroes

Lang steps up and whirls his swords, and two dig deep into the wounded devil B2. But only one of his two swords is blessed, so the other inflicts 5 hp damage, not 15. Lang inflicts 32 hit points, for a total damage done to B2 of 68! Lang himself suffers 5 hp viscious damage

Sunshine barks -- the dog is at AG5.

Wynn tumbles to T8 and hits hard at Bone Devil 5 for 22 hp of blessed damage. Wynn, please make a Will save vs DC15, and ONLY if you make it, then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You realize that Bone Devil 5 is an illusion.}

Troll-Syr slams Bone Devil 4 with a flurry of telling blows. [OOC: thanks for putting each attack on a seperate line -- very understandable!] Three punches hit, two of them viscious, inflicting a hideous 70 hp damage to the devil. However, with the thing's damage reduction, 30 of that does not penetrate, so total damage from Troll-Syr's attacks to B4 is only 40 hp.

Perhaps some god of luck or an immortal power inimicable to devils smiles on Syr -- and he takes ZERO damage from his own viscious attacks! But maybe Syr can gather some insight from this experience: make a DC15 Will save, and ONLY if you make it, then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You realize that Bone Devil 4 is an illusion.}

Angus polymorphs into Pixie form and flies up to see over the ice wall.

Xenia comes out of hiding in order to attack with painful precision. She flanks from T5 and shoots an arrow into the Bone Devil 5. Her arrow flies so true that it inflicts 22 hp damage to B5 and comes out the other side, whizzing by Wynn! [OOC: I assume Xenia has some way to shoot and avoid provoking attacks of opportunity? If not, the DM will be nice this time and not take the proffered AoO. If so, enlighten your curious substitute DM.]

Speaking of curiousity, how curious it might seem to Xenia and Wynn that the flanking duo inflict near-identical wounds -- each 22 hp damage!

Bin moves to T4 and prepares to interpose for Xenia.

Belkior takes a double move to U5, looking for wounded to heal.

The Enemies

Bone Devil 5 attacks! It focuses all attacks on Wynn, hitting AC 16, 18, 23, and 20 -- OhMyGosh! What hideous luck! All miss!

Bone Devil 4 seems to concentrate on some magical effect. Nothing visible happens.

Bone Devil 3 delays.

Bone Devil 2 backs up to AC12-AD13 and concentrates. A super dense Green-Yellow Fog Cloud appears, cloaking both B2 and B3! This cloud is denser than a normal fog, and those within have total concealment (50% miss chance). (You can see the last positions for B1 and B2 on the map, but keep in mind that they are totally hidden in the cloud.)

Bone Devil 1 backs up to AB7-AC8 -- into the cloud -- and concentrates. A wall of ice -- this one 60 feet long and 20 feet high -- appears on the field of battle!

Bone Devil 3 -- now in the fog cloud -- seems to concentrate on some magical effect. Then it flies out of the Fog Cloud. Although it is leaving a threatened square (due to Troll-Syr's reach), it provokes no AoO because it is 100% concealed by the unusually dense Cloud. It emerges in midair and flies up right next to Pixie Angus! But the activation of the fly and the movement it makes are all it has time for right now. Angus is left looking eye-to-eye with a grinning devil!

For all the flurry of activity, not one Bone Devil lands a blow this round. Hmm ... maybe they are friendly, pacifistic devils? But the sight of the evil glow of their eyes, or the sound of mad cackling laughter, tends to convince you otherwise.

Wynn stops dead as his sword slips through the devil before him. He is equally surprised when Xenia's arrow also flies through his adversary. "Ignore this one!" he yells out, "it is merely an illusion. Some of these other devils may not be real either!" [Will Save=25]

The bard reaches into his belt pouch with his free hand, extracts a potion and gulps down the potion of fly. It leaves a bitter acrid taste in his mouth, but the effects are instantaneous and he feels his feet begin to lift from the ground.

When Angus moves away from the devil, he moves through squares that the devil threatens, and therefore provokes an attack of opportunity. The devil uses that AoO to try to grapple Angus!

First he tries to grab Angus by making a melee touch attack. His attack, at +14, hits AC19. Angus's AC is 22 but four points of that comes from his mage armor, which a touch attack ignores. So since Angus's AC vs a touch is at best an 18, the devil, hitting AC19, grabs Angus!

Then the devil makes a grapple check. His BAB is +10, his Str bonus is +5, he takes a -4 non-proficiency penalty, and he gains a +4 size mod for being large. His total grapple roll is at +15.

Angus is small, giving him a -4 on his grapple DC. He also takes a strength penalty of -2 as a Str 7 Pixie. His BAB I don't know, but given that he is a sorcerer with 5th level spells but not 6th level spells, let's be generous and say he has a +6 BAB. That makes Angus's Grapple DC a 10-4-2+6=10. I'll assume no Improved Grapple feat.

The Devil rolls his grapple check -- a 26. That beats Angus's Grapple DC 10, as it had to. Moreover, the devil did not roll a natural 1, 2, or 3, which would have meant automatic failure under the Wold house rules. Therefore Angus is grappled, and takes 1d4+5 nonlethal grapple damage -- 9 points of nonlethal damage to Angus!

But the real point, and the reason the DM is posting this now, is that, obviously, Angus is not going to be moving and then casting a spell. Therefore Angus should post a new set of actions for his round, taking into account that he is grappled.

Syr hears Xenia comment and looks hard at the devil that he has engaged in combat (Will 18). With a snort, he yells to Lang, "This one is a fake too!"

He replies to Angus' request, "Gotcha, there is a cloud over here anyway." Breaking off the fight with his imaginary foe, he moves around the ice wall to help the sorceror (double move AI4).

He is confronted with 2 struggling creatures in mid-air (OOC: Do they stay there grappling?)

Cayzle: Yes, the grapplers are hovering 20 feet off the ground, thanks to the Devil's Fly spell.

Xenia lifts off the ground as well as she spots Wynn flying up and over, into the sicko green fog. Where your guy goes, you gotta follow.

The dark rogue rises slowly up to the top of the wall, following along the top to the east. There's a new vantage from up above. The Bony Guys got the whole mouth of the cave Iced off and they're probs down in that yucky stuff somewhere. It's where Wynn is, so she goes. Head-first, she dives down the side of the ice slab, slipping into the shadow of the wall itself at the last moment, Xenia enters the fog.

After a torturously slow climb to the top of the wall, the halfling cleric of Alemi finally peers over into the green fog.

He looks about for Lang. That weapon of his will ensure that he is wounded and in need of healing. The fog hides all. Further, the question of why there would be three devils from the Abyss here serving the priests of Ga'al, continues to nag at him. Were they bound by vows of service? The power behind such an implication is daunting. But Belkior does not hesitate.

Continuing along the wall, he crosses over, still searching the green mist for Lang.

Syr frowns as the devil flies back over the wall and disappears, after loosing its grip on Angus.

"Won't be rid of me that easily."

Taking a few long steps back for a running start, the elf in troll's clothing makes a rush at the wall and jumps up to grasp the cold top edge. Scrabbling with troll claws, he climbs his way to the top to find himself face to face with ...

"Hi Belkior, fancy meeting you here." The troll grins with hideous teeth and prepares to leap down into the fray.

Lang wonders where the greenish cloud disappeared to when he puts 2 and 2 together and realizes that is was an illusion. More light bulbs go off in his head as he recalls hearing his comrades shout out about the devils near them being illusions also.

Lang shouts out, "The cloud, it isn't real. Just like some of the bone devils. There is at least one real on though."

Well the one that smacks Lang is real enough. The evil creatures poison is not strong enough to bother Lang. He is getting a little concerned that he may not be able to take these two guys down before help arrives. No time like the present to put a little punishment on the devil that injured him.

[OOC: This is the Tuesday DM Post, darn it!]

Wynn moves into the 15-foot high cloud, past one flying devil and directly over another. He realizes that the cloud is another illusion. He provokes attacks of opportunity from both! Two Tail Attacks at +12: both miss!

[OOC to those who quibble: I decided to replace the devil's Improved Intitiative feat with Combat Reflexes, which is one reason that they chose this strategy.]

Angus moves to 150 feet up at the same coordinates. His spellcraft tells him that the cloud is some kind of illusion. He cannot see through it and it still apears real for him, though, because he has not interacted with it nor made a Will save, to which he will be entitled when he does so. Thus, he has NO line of sight into the cloud and cannot see events therein! Angus tries to dispel it, but fails to meet the required DC22 needed to take down a level 12 effect.

Bin casts Air Walk and moves to the top of the ice wall.

Xenia first cleverly moves so that she has no line of sight to the cloud or the devils. That allows her to start hiding again. If she had remained under observation, then she could not have hid without creating a diversion to hide. But with the total cover of the ice, she can begin hiding again, not needing cover or concealment due to her Shadowdancer skill.

However, devils have a strange ability: "See in Darkness (Su): Some devils can see perfectly in darkness of any kind, even that created by a deeper darkness spell." Does that mean that they can see a Shadowdancer hiding in plain sight?

The cloud itself, Xenia realizes, is an illusion, and offers no cover at all. So can Xenia hide, under the gaze of creatures who "see perfectly in darkness of any kind," even the darkness of shadows? The DM suspects that this might be a topic of discussion on the Rules Board, but the game has been delayed enough as it is, so for the purposes of this battle only, the DM chooses to resolve the issue with the roll of a die. Even, Xenia can hide. Odd, no. The d2 roll is ... a 1! No, Xenia cannot hide in the shadows under the gaze of a devil!

That means she provokes two attacks of opportunity from the devils as she moves! Two more tail jabs: Gosh darn it! Both miss! Lousy stinking tail jabs! The DM wonders how he can make evil laughs if he can't hit the broad side of a PC!

Belkior moves along the ice wall, and then over. He ends up over the cloud (Belkior is 20 feet up; the cloud is 15 feet high). He has not entered it; he has not "interacted' with it; thus he does not know it is an illusion nor does he know where anyone is inside. Even if he found out it was an illusion, it would still block line of sight until he entered it and made a DC15 will save.

As Belkior moves from AC5 to AC6, he leaves a square that is threatened by Bone Devil B3, who is hovering just under the cloud's surface. That provokes an AoO, moreover, since Belkior cannot see it coming, he loses his dex bonus to AC. the attack is a bite! It hits AC28! Belkior takes 9 hp damage. Belkior is out of reach of the other devil, though he does not know that.

Troll-Syr jumps up and grabs the top of the ice wall with little problem, but his hands slip and getting over is not so easy! The climb check to do so is a 30! It is slippery, and the wall offers very little in the way of handholds!

Sunshine moves five feet out of Syr's way.

Lang shouts that the cloud is an illusion, but it still appears real (and blocks line of sight) until it is interacted with. That is, once you enter, you can make a Will Save vs DC15. But now that Lang has alerted everyone, you get a +4 on that save!

Lang takes a five foot step and attacks Devil B1. He inflicts 65 points of damage to B1!

Bone Devil 1 -- Takes a five foot step back to flank Wynn and attacks. (Wynn is 15 feet up, but the devil is large and has a 10 fot reach.) Only the tail hits! Wynn takes 11 hp damage and must make a DC20 Fort save or take 3 points of Str damage.

Bone Devil 3 -- Now makes his full attack against Wynn, with the flanking bonus. At last! Muahaha! The bite misses, but both claws and the tail connect -- one claw for a confirmed crit! Oh Great Ga'al, the devil and DM pray, let me take down at least one PC this battle!

Three claw hits (counting the crit as 2 claws) do 13 hp to Wynn. One tail hit does 11 more hp and forces another Fort save vs DC 20 for 2 points Str damage. Bwa ha ha!

Wynn gimaces as the bone devils strike home with their tails. He manages to shake off the weakening sensation from the first attack, but the second overcomes even his elven defences and he knows that he has been weakened by some kind of poison [Fort Saves = 22 and 10]

The bard realizes that much depends on sending these devils back to their own plane as quickly as possible, and so he gambles...

Wynn descends 5 feet to make sure that he can strike at either devil, and then he launches into a spinning attack, his blade circumscribing a perfect arc that intersects with both devils. [Whirlwind attack vs BD1 hits AC34 crit confirmed with a 31 for 20 HP total and hits BD3 AC=27 for 12 HP; all good damamage from blessed / adamantine longsword; note that I took appropriate reductions for loss of 2 Str]

Bin moves and ascends. He ends the round 50 feet up. The cave mouth is 25 feet high at its apex.

Pixie-Angus drops 20 feet and dispels the illusionary cloud.

Troll-Syr manages to clamber up to the top of the ice wall.

Xenia tumbles, fires, and sneak attacks B1 for 25 hp damage.

Wynn takes a five foot step down and launches a whirlwind attack! His critical blow kills Bone Devil B1, and he inflicts 12 hp damage on B3.

Belkior double moves, ending up next to Xenia, but above her.

Sunshine barks in fear of being left alone! Poor Sunshine!

Lang steps forward, trying to attack the lone remaining devil. As he does so, he provokes an attack of opportunity. The devil, very much aware that Lang is a killing machine, tries a desperate move -- he tries to trip Lang! The devil first has to make a touch attack. His attack at +14 hits AC18. Does that hit Lang's AC once you remove his armor and shield bonuses, his natural armor bonuses if any, and any enhancement bonuses to armor and shield?

If Lang's Touch AC is 18 or less, then the devil tries to trip him. That's a d20 -4 nonproficiency penalty +5 Str +4 size, or +5 total. Lang's Trip DC is 10 plus his Str or Dex adjustment, whichever is higher, plus a bonus if he is a monk, hand of domi, or has the improved trip feat.

The devil's trip roll is a 23! That should do it!

So if Lang's Touch AC is 18 or less, then Lang has been tripped. He is prone. If he stands up, that will provoke another attack of opportunity! He can crawl forward 5 feet, but that too provokes an AoO. Let me know what else you might want to do, and I'll let you know the consequences.

The Enemies

Bone Devil 3 -- As a free action, the Devil activates its fear aura. ALL people within five feet must make a Will Save vs DC17 or be affected as by a Fear spell, that is, you are panicked:

A panicked creature must drop anything it holds and flee at top speed from the source of its fear, as well as any other dangers it encounters, along a random path. It can't take any other actions. In addition, the creature takes a -2 penalty on all saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. If cornered, a panicked creature cowers. A panicked creature can use special abilities, including spells, to flee; indeed, the creature must use such means if they are the only way to escape.

That's a free action that all the devils should have been using all along -- but your stupid DM missed it, duh.

Meanwhile, for its actions this round, the devil first takes a five foot step up in the air. It had been 10 feet off the ground, but now it is 15 feet up. Then it goes after Wynn, hoping to kill him. But the uncooperative die roller gives the devil the satisfaction of just one hit! A claw lashes Wynn for a measly 4 damage.

LEFT UNRESOLVED -- If Lang's Touch AC is better than 18, then he is not tripped, and he advances and inflicts 42 hp damage to the last devil. If his Touch AC is 18 or less, then he IS tripped, and he has a move action still to come from prone 10 feet from the devil as shown on the map below.

Wynn ignores the hideous nature of his foe [Will vs Fear =17] and shifts his position ever so slightly to ensure that he is in flanking position against the remaining bone devil before pressing his attack. LOL! this is where your substitute DM reveals that although he has read the module (contrary to all evidence), the details about the cave in fact eluded him! D'Oh! Maybe the cave entrance you all saw before is now masked by an illusion? Yeah, that MUST be it!

No wait, forget what I just said. You see a cave mouth level with the ground that is 25 feet high. You do not see the cave you saw before. Hmmm ... you wonder what happened!?!

Matt C. - the original cave entrance was 250' off the ground. I do not remeber how large the opening was, but it most likely would be large enough for a dragon.

Buzz Ok, can I recend my movement then please. I just wanted to be off the ground to where I could look directly into the cave mouth. It seems I wasted an action, but can you just keep me where I was before, instead of me wasting another round for Bin to walk back down to where he was?

Matt: In your post you have the devil at 15' in the air. Can we attack him at that height? A creature with fly spell has average mobility and acording to the DMG cannot hover. Is the devil moving away from us?

Cayzle: The devil started the round ten feet up, just under the top of the 15 foot cloud. Then he took a five foot "step" up to an altitude of 15 feet. At that altitude, the Troll-Syr (a large creature with a ten foot reach) can hit him, but Lang cannot. If Lang had a reach weapon or a missile weapon ... But right now, not so much. The Ice Devil is operating under a Fly spell, has a maneuverability of good, and can hover.

Lang stands up from prone. That provokes an AoO. A tail stab, at +12, hits AC30 for 9 hp damage and forces a DC20 Fort save vs poison or suffer 5 points of Str damage.

Xenia takes a double move and flanks the devil with Wynn.

Belkior moves to AD10, 5 feet up, and touches Lang with a cure [OOC: DM rules that you cannot reach Lang from 10 feet up, so make it five.]

Troll-Syr moves to engage, and attacks for 6 hp damage.

Pixie-Angus casts a spell -- and his roll of 22 just beats the devil's SR21! The magic missiles pound home, inflicting 21 hp damage.

Bin attempts to turn again, but Warrd has not smiled on the Protector today.

Wynn hits hard too, with two attacks that inflict 33 hp damage to the monster.

Sunshine barks.

Angus drops to a height of 20 feet to converse with his friends. "The devil is gone for now. I agree with Lang that it may have retreated into the cave to warn its master."

Angus looks at the state of the group. "I am down on spells, but I think we should try to push our advantage. While we cure up, Wynn can cast invisibility on himself, Belkior and me. I will dimension door past the forbiddance and past the symbol of death. Belkior can then mist the mirrors while I go back for everyone else."

DM Sanity note: Treat Poison
To treat poison means to tend a single character who has been poisoned and who is going to take more damage from the poison (or suffer some other effect). Every time the poisoned character makes a saving throw against the poison, you make a Heal check. The poisoned character uses your check result or his or her saving throw, whichever is higher.

So I guess the 18 would cover Wynn's Fort save of 10, unless his first 22 also failed?

I'm not real sure how to work it.

Without descending to the ground, Belkior walks to Wynn, and begins an examination. With the added height afforded by the Airwalk spell, the halfling checks the dilatation of the half-elf's eyes.

"I'm afraid that isn't going to be enough, Bin." The Healer of Alemi focuses his mind as he prepares to perform a feat of his god.

The bard thanks Bin and Belkior for their assistance in turn. "Thanks to you both. I can feel the poison diminished within me." The bard then pauses and casts a curing spell upon himself three times. [CLW X3 = 8+12+10 = 30 HP]

Sufficiently recovered, Wynn sets about to cast invisibility on those selected by the groups leader.

Wynn casts invisibility on two of his fellow shields and finally upon himself.

Xenia whips out a coil of silk rope and secures a harness around Sunshine's chest and flanks. (Use Rope 18/Taking 10) The tail end of the rope arcs over the icy wall followed by Xenia herself.

"Alright, haul up the pup."

She lands next to Wynn, ready to join the first wave into the tunnel.

"Close as I can 'member, Angus, the Forbidding stops some, like, 80 feet into the tunnel. Which, like, bends a bit to the right. The tunnel has a right turn there that looks like it opens to a bigger place. 'Bout fifteen - tweny feet 'cross from there is an alcove with the Evil Twin Mirrors. The alcove is almost a square fifteen or tweny by fifteen or tweny."

"Looks like this ... " And, in the dirt, the rogue draws a MAP with her finger.

[OOC: Friends, just a quick "Friday" post ... and regular DM posts start Monday morning. Also, let me add that I am having a ball with DMing this game, and I've asked Jerry to let me take over as DM for at least the medium term. So you're stuck with me at least thru the end of the year, I'm thinking.]

Poison proves no problem, thanks to Bin's efforts and Belkior's miracle (not to mention Lang's hardy metabolism!) -- and Lang and Wynn end up no weaker as a result.

A full minute goes by as the party preps and heals.

[OOC: Do you guys have a party leader? Or is it a bit of a free-for-all? LOL! In one of my own games it is the former, and in the other, the latter, so *I* have no preference! PLEASE do set forth a marching order, standard procedures, etc, and also DO send me PC sheets (thanks to those who already have done so! That's cayzle@cayzle.com).

"Well if we pop in at N17, or thereabouts, will that keep us away from the symbol of death and the mirrors. Wynn, Myself and Belkior will be invisible, but you will not be?

Angus looks to Syr "When I come back, I will have to end the spell on you as you are now too big for me to dimension door with. Sorry, but if things go right I'll troll you up again."

Angus looks a bit down cast as he approaches Lang "I think we have to leave Sunshine behind on this one as I can only transport 3 at a time with my dimension door spell. Can you explain it to Sunshine, I just feel terrible splitting you too, but if the dragon is in there, it might be for the best."

Angus looks over the Shields "This will be tough, everyone work together and lets take down the cleric first as we do not want him curing the dragon just before we kill it.....Are we in agreement with our landing spot? Thanks for the invisiblity Wynn, I am touching Xenia, I need Wynn and Belkior to do the same and call out confirmation before we dimension door."

Angus will dimension door with Wynn, Xenia and Belkior to the spot agree in the cave attempting to avoid the symbol of death and the mirror of opposition. If Xenia feels that she will be exposed to the mirror of opposition, Angus will cast Invisibility on her also.

Upon arriving Angus will add "Belkior, the mirrors are all yours, Xenia see what you can see, I'll be back with Bin, Syr and Lang. Make room or we will squish you."

Angus will dimension door back outside and announce he is back.

When Angus returns he listens to Syr's questions "You are correct. You can stay a troll and walk into the forbiddance, but it will damage you, although the least of us if I am correct. The Symbol of death will effect you but in your troll form it will help you resist, but it is a risk. I do not think closing you eyes will help. About leaving, you best keep me upright. I will have to save two spells for us to leave and that may be tough to do with the high level cleric and dragon hanging around. This may push us to the wall. Everyone can leave on their own, but they must face the forbiddance spell, that is if I am no longer able to cast spells."

Angus cocks his head and looks up at Syr "What will it be? You giving up the troll form and popping in with Bin and Lang and me or are you walking?"
