Scene 3: Farmer's Market

Over There! [DM Jerry]
Sunday September 30th, 2007 8:38:45 PM

...And so, dear children, The Emerald Dragons, gathered in a circle for teleporting. Each one looked the other in the eyes, conveying yet again, that they were comrades in arms, friends, and ready to die for what they believed in.

To them, my students, this was just like going into any other event. They didn't realize yet that history was being made and this battle was to be a piece of it. To us, it seems amazing that they simply just accepted the situation and teleported.

When they arrived, they were at a mithril and silver stone, next to a road. A house to the north and a house to the south.

A farmer, named Zucker, was waiting for help there. He jumped in fear as they arrived, but quickly recovering he pointed south, screaming the direction in his anguish.

"Hurry!" he fretted. "Its over there! Can't you see it? There!"

In the distance, some 400' away, they saw a wyrm diving on the house, breathing.

[I'm guessing that we have at least one round of closing, etc. before we start the combat.

Please do as Athalorn did and list active spells and effects, changed stats and bonuses, and hit points if not full.

Olana nods at Ingrge, checks her bow and quiver.
"Anyone want a stoneskin?" she asks, while tapping the wand on her shoulder.

As they arrive at their destination, she looks down at the stone. "Interesting," she says.

As for the dragon, she looks to see if it might be the one they fought before, as they advance. She's also looking for a place of cover that she can fire from.

SPOT DC 18 (Blind, I tell you. Blind.)

Tuesday October 2nd, 2007 11:19:18 AM

We're testing all day at school today, so no breaks to post. I'm working on it...like 10 secs at at time. But it may not be out until late afternoon.

Next two days are testing too, so posting may fall late afternoon this week.

If you haven't posted, go for it. If you have, then I'll post when I can later today.

Party Initiative Round 1 [DM Jerry]
Tuesday October 2nd, 2007 12:53:06 PM

After receiving his Stoneskin, Lian runs forward.

Gunther follows, but more slowly.

Olana hands out the Stoneskins and looks for a place of cover. She spots three possibilities: A hay wagon, just on the other side of the road to the left of the farmer's house, the farmer's house where she could shoot around a corner of the house, and the largest cow she's ever seen! A dairy cow that is HUGE in size. It is calmly chewing some grass on the right flank of the house.

Athalorn starts running with Grawl towards the dragon and the farmhouse.

[The new Grawl is the same in all aspects, except I've made him one size bigger and increased his HD by one. I know it breaks the rules, but we don't want him dying every combat. You'll have to watch to know when to pull him out though. If you feel I've given him too much, let me know that as well.]

Ingrge casts prepatory spells and starts giving instructions while moving out. Then he casts Ice Storm on the Dragon. The spell falls on the dragon causing it to scream out in surprise and annoyance with the damage from the spell.

A very high pitched voice, cackling as well as grating on the ear shouts,

"Who dares!!!"

It has to be a female! Not the expected nemesis of the Emerald Dragons.

Milo runs with the group as does Bertram. Except just as Milo starts running Gunther reaches over to pick him up, holding him up in a fireman's carry.

From this day forward in the Wold, it will not be called a Fireman's carry, but a Gunther's Carry!

[Ok, Ingrge started the combat, so that was your round 1 folks. Dragon initiative next. Working on it now so no more posts please until I'm done.]

Gunther (ooc)[SUB JAY B]
Tuesday October 2nd, 2007 5:53:05 PM

OOC: Jerry, just as an aside, Gunther has never done the 'carry' as far as I know when Nellie plays him. This is new to Gunther.
I say, if Milo squirms free, or avoids Gunther (which will be EASY for the halfling), lets say he does avoid Gunther... to avoid any disagreement. :)
I would hate to put another in danger for a moment of playfulness on the part of a character who isn't even mine! ;)

Jerry
Wednesday October 3rd, 2007 10:18:58 AM

OK, a problem has occurred. I posted for the dragon, but somehow it didn't take and I was too much in a hurry to check to see if it took. My bad.

So that puts us a day behind. Again, my apologies. It has been a long time since I've made that newb mistake.

So, I'll try again. Posting for the dragon. I may need to delete a post or so above. If so, then I apologize.

Starting on it now.

Wow, and I just noticed that Ingrge saw the post because he reacted to the Cone of Frost? What's going on here? It looks like someone deleted the post!

Any confessions?

Anyone have a copy of it?

I will do my best to recreate it, but the damage may be different.

Dragon Initiative Round 1 [DM Jerry]  16d10(1+3+7+6+6+4+10+3+5+10+2+9+7+7+9+7)=96
Wednesday October 3rd, 2007 10:35:31 AM

[recreated after someone deleted it.]

The red dragon pushes off and glides forward, flying over Lian, who is in the lead and landing in front of Gunther who is carrying Milo.

"So you are the Emerald Dragons. How dare you interfere with meee? I am a guest of Parnoth the King!!! Face my wrath!"

She hovers there and breathes!

However, she is not so stupid as to breathe fire in front of an experienced adventuring group. So she switches it to a cone of frost! It seems to extend forever in front of her, not stopping at the usual 60' but doubling that to 120'. The damage is 96hpd. Reflex Save DC31 for half.

She continues to hover 10' in the air in front of Gunther and Milo.

-----------------

[We're kinda being loose with positioning and movement as you know. So, Lian is not in the breath weapon AOE since he is further ahead. I'm deleting Olana's last post due to our missing post problem and since she didn't say she was moving before my Party Results post, she is too far back to be hit. As far as I can see, everyone else should be in the cone area as everyone else moved forward. If anyone has a reason that they feel they should not be in the breath weapon AOE, then email me and I'll do my best to be fair.]

[I am deleting the posts between this one and the Party Results post. That is Olana and Ingrge's posts. Post the same action, or decide you want to change it. Again, apologies, but I honestly don't know how the post was deleted.]

You are now free to post.

Brother Bertram AC32 HP 20 Stoneskin  d20+10=11
Wednesday October 3rd, 2007 11:57:46 AM

Bertram tries to avoid the cold, knowing he cant but still trying.(Reflex 11) He staggers as the horrific cold seeps into his bones. He releases a Word of Power from Domi aimed at the dragon, hoping it would help. His body begins shutting down, his mind as numb as the rest of his body.

(Power Word Blind DC 25)

Wednesday October 3rd, 2007 12:24:46 PM

Ok, the culprit who deleted my post by accident has confessed. ;) I'll keep Kent's name anomymous in case he's embarrased about it. Oh! Oops. Sorry Kent!

Lian
Wednesday October 3rd, 2007 1:19:02 PM

OOC: waiting on DM. Will post then.

What a shame Kent, er, that no name person, deleted the post! It was SOOO good too! I laughed! Now I cry at the literary disaster which occurred. Now Jerry won't get that Nobel Prize for Gaming he's wanted for years!! ;)

Athalorn AC 26 HP 106/106  d20+8=26
Wednesday October 3rd, 2007 1:21:23 PM

The druid is stopped in his tracks by the icy pain that wracks his body, his blood freezing to the bone almost toppling him to the floor. Moving hastily away, looking for cover, he delays for Grawl to get near to him, then draws on his inner magic, calling for the power of nature to aid his weakened body and that of his ally.

Milo (AC 30; HP 113/113)  d20+21=36
Wednesday October 3rd, 2007 8:46:47 PM

Milo twists into his best mystic pretzel form... and completely avoids the dragon's breath weapon. Shouting up to the critter from under Gunther's arm, "YA KNOW!?! DRAGONS SURE HAVEN'T GOTTEN ANY SMARTER THESE DAYS!! HAVE YA?!" Glancing up at Gunther, "um... you can put me down now." Milo grins.

OOC: Reflex save DC 36 plus improved evasion.

Ingrge: AC28, 102/102 , 70/70, Arcane sight, see invisibility, freedom of movement, stone skin, Bull's strength, Bigby's interposing hand  d20+16=32 d20+15=31
Wednesday October 3rd, 2007 9:03:03 PM

managing to avoid damage from the cone of ice (made save DC 32 and evasion), Ingrge darts off to the side and decides to try something a bit different casting a spell to try and keep the beast from the group as much as possible.

Bigby's interposing hand. No save, SR 31.

Olana
Thursday October 4th, 2007 12:01:44 AM

Olana runs headlong for the farmers house, to heck with the hay bale and the giant cow. Once she's there, she takes aim and fires. (Next round?)

The monk turns in mid-stride, now at the rear of the dragon, the monk launches himself into the air onto her back, and aims to grab something on her dorsal; maybe a spine or large scale.

Party Results Round 2 [DM Jerry]  d20+13=28 d20+31=41 4d8(1+7+6+3)+12=29 d6=3
Thursday October 4th, 2007 5:03:14 PM

Brother Bertram takes the full brunt of the breath weapon. He then casts Power Word Blind. The dragon tries to resist it, but Brother Bertram beats the Magic Resistance.[d20+13=28] However, the Old dragon still throws the spell off because she has more than 200 hit points at the current moment [see spell listing.]

Athalorn also is struck with the breath weapon. He heals himself and Grawl after moving aside (I'm going to say to the left.) There is no cover nearby as we are fighting near the road having met the dragon halfway.

Milo does the "pretzel", soon to be a new dance craze AND fighting style to avoid all damage from the breath. Simply amazing!

Ingrge, also escapes the breath weapon. He also moves to the side. [We'll say he moved to the right.] He casts Bigby's Interposing Hane. He also beats the spell resistance and the hand appears floating in the air ominously between Ingrge and the Dragon.

Olana runs past the dragon and to the farm house where she sets up some cover for herself. Next round the missles will fly!

Lian leaps for the back of the dragon launching himself over 20' into the air, as the dragon is hovering 10' above the ground. Time seems suspended as he reaches the apex of his jump. Then the dragon responds with his Attack of Opportunity slapping Lian with her tail hitting AC41 slapping Lian aside. [d20+31=41] for 29hpd [4d8(1+7+6+3)+12=29] plus 3hpd from falling [unless tumbling, etc.][d6=3]

Gunther prepares to fly and take on the dragon.

------------
[MR for the dragon is 27.]

[dragon initiative is next]

Monsters Initiative Round 2 [DM Jerry]
Thursday October 4th, 2007 5:19:00 PM

"Parnoth will hear of this personal insult! And he'll come here now and finish you! If there's anything left."

She then seems to concentrate. An amulet at her neck, that was formally invisible, begins to glow.

Then in draconic, she says the word for the number "three" and beams of light shoot out of the object in three different directions. One hits an old oak tree near the farm's barn. The other two beams stike out north and northwest out of sight.

Then she rises flying north over your heads at maximum speed travelling 200' in that direction.

When the beam hits the old oak tree, it splits it in two. From within comes a shout of triumph! where the tree trunk stood, but a second ago, now stands a two-headed demon!

It has the body of a bull with the wings of a bat!

Four hands. Two hold a flaming whip with hooks, claws covering it. Two hold horrible looking swords that wail aloud.

Its body is flaming!

[Knowledge Planes of 20 to realize this is a Balor--well a two-headed one.]

----------

Balor AC is 31
Spell Resistance is 28

[OK, I'm done. It is now Party Initiative for Round 3.]

Ingrge: AC28, 102/102 , 70/70, Arcane sight, see invisibility, freedom of movement, stone skin, Bull's strength, Bigby's interposing hand, Mordenkainen's Sword  d20+15=33 d20+25=39 4d6(6+3+5+1)+3=18
Thursday October 4th, 2007 6:16:21 PM

Redirecting the hand to intercept the charging beast, Ingrge has no idea what the thing is that is heading their way other than it is ugly and definately angry, and starts wracking his brain for what he can try to do to combat this unknown beast. Deciding on a stop gap measure to allow himself a bit more time to decide how best to combat the beast, The elder elf casts a quick spell, Mordenkainen's Sword, and sudenly there is a shimering swordlike plane of force hovering near the beast which strikes out at it. Ingrge grins as his spell's power is able to find its way through the beast's defenses. SR 33, AC 39 for 18 points of damage

Bigby's 12/13 rounds
Mordenkainen's 13/13 rounds
Freedom of movement 70 minutes
Stone skin 70 minutes

Friday October 5th, 2007 2:11:04 AM

Athalorn turns to face the new foe, and has never seen such a creature before. Clearly it was a denizen of some other plane, for it was not of nature's blessing. He concentrates as it gets nearer (within 60') and gestures towards it, releasing a beam of powerful light.

Standard Action: Cast Sunbeam on the Balor, one beam of light causing 4d6(4+4+3+4)= 15 damage and beating Spell resistance (1d20+13=29) Balor must make reflex save vs DC 24 or be blinded.

Active Effects:
Bull's Strength +4 Str
Barkskin +5 AC

Milo (AC 30; HP 113/113)
Friday October 5th, 2007 9:22:20 AM

Milo's eye grow wide at the sight of the two-headed demon, "Ugh... buddy? Nobody invited you to this little party." That said the halfling rogue activates his ring of blinking and moves closer, staying out of the creature's reach for the moment.

Spell Effects
Bull Strength

Olana (HP 68 AC 25 Stoneskin)
Friday October 5th, 2007 11:14:46 AM

"Hmmm..." says Olana, after wincing at Lian's tail slapping and watching the dragon rise up into the air. She ducks instinctively as the lights shoot from the amulet.
Now what?

"Oh, she's left us a gift - maybe three gifts."

Spending this round ducked behind the farmers house, switching to, and stringing her short bow, which packed a heavier punch, and checking her distance.

(Is she within 60ft of the critter?)

Lian (AC 37+1+6=44, Hps 103/122, B.End, O.Wis, PfF, B.Str)  d20+26=41

Dodge vs Dragon

The monk seems to tuck in midair and roll, landing like a cat, reducing the damage from the fall, but buckling under the tail blow; even with stony hide, that would hurt. (Tumble 41)

"Good, go tell your little green boyfriend there's a certain monk that wants to get his hands on his lackey, Mop!" He grimaces. "And if I can manage it, hands around his green neck!"

"Ow." Then he proceeds to move toward the incoming two headed creature. (will move 70 feet, then takes Total Defensive Standard action, adding +6 Dodge)

Speaking into the Emerald communication ring, Lian says to the group. "Um, this is the second multiple headed creature, by my count, that we've seen today. Me thinks I smell a theme!"

Active Effects:
Dodge vs Two-headed demon?
Stoneskin 120/130
Bull's Strength +4 Str
Owl's Wisdom +4 Wis (+2 to AC, 5 mins)
Bear's Endurance +4 Con (+28 hps)

Friday October 5th, 2007 12:23:02 PM

"Covard!"
Smart enough not to get caught alone with a dragon, the warrior switches tactics at once.

He flies at the incoming Balor. [Accounting for distance, attacking only once, assuming he can at all.]

(Hits AC 27, for 19 damage (standard steel), 4 electric damage)

Ok, I'm starting. We were in training all day so no posting during lunch or planning. They told us Friday that at the new school next year we'd all have to be self-contained, meaning we teach ALL subjects to our kids just like in the lower grades. That's tough at a 6th grade level. The subjects require more expertise to get the kids past the state test. One teacher can't have expertise in every subject. Anyway....starting to post.

Please forgive, it will have to be fast tonight.

Party Results Round 3 [DM Jerry]  d20+19=32
Monday October 8th, 2007 6:48:38 PM

Ingrge's MOrdenkainen's Sword strikes at the Demon doing damage, but it is obvious to Ingrge that it didn't take much of that hit at all.

The beast, not one for banter, stares holes in Ingrge for his audacity.

Brother Bertram heals himself.

Athalorn also beats the fearsome Balor casting Sunbeam on it. The right head (chose one at ramdom) saves vs. the spell [d20+19=32]. Without blinking the other head stares at Athalorn. Athalorn and Growl ADVANCE CAREFULLY.

Milo Activates his Ring of Blinking and MOVES CLOSER, BUT DOES NOT CLOSE.

Lian lands like an expert circus act but holding his middle from the tail strike. He MOVES FORWARD; however, pushing out the pain and moves towards the two-headed demon.

Gunther flies forward closing with the beast! But he misses with his attack, needing a 31.

Olana as she ROUNDS THE CORNER OF THE HOUSE to look behind the farmer's house, sees a grisly sight. A human male adult is tossed onto the ground spattered in blood with the bottom half of him bitten off. He hold his daughter who is burned beyond recognition, naked with the flames having burned her clothes off. She is without a doubt, dead. A son holds his mother some 15' away crying and panicked as his mother has fainted. The boy and his mother are both burned, but alive and whole. Hardy folk!

A burned patch of ground reaches out from where the dad has flopped into the distance.

The dragon, with a distant pop disappears, teleporting away, leaving only the two-headed demon.

It sees Gunther fly to him and try to attack. Realizing the threat for what it is, a competent high level warrior, he strikes at it with his right Longsword.

1st attack hits AC35 for 16hpd.
2nd attack hits AC36 for 14hpd.
3rd attack hits AC29 for 13hpd.
4th attack hits AC17 for 18hpd.

The the other head lets loose with the left sword.

1st attack hits AC48 for 17hpd
2nd attack hits AC46 for 17hpd

Then it happens. The third attack is so fast it can't hardly be seen! It slices into Gunther's neck! For a second it looks like hit head has gone flying! Then by some stroke of incredible luck, it remains on his body as the critical hit does not take!!! 3rd attack hits AC46 creating a critical threat, but the threat does not turn into a critical hit as the threat check hits AC32 missing Gunther by 1! The damage is 20hp.

4th attack hits AC28 for 17hpd.

He prepares his two whips and waits for the rest to arrive.

I need everyone's Grappling Take 10 number please. See the rules for Special Attacks in the Constabulary Castle.

Here's the formula:

Grapple DC = 10 + Str Modifier + Size Mod + BAB + Feats

Gunther (Ac 33+1, Hps 43/127, B.Str) [SUB JAY B]
Monday October 8th, 2007 7:43:47 PM

(OOC: Unfortunately, Gunther never received stoneskin by my account. :))

Gunther, critically wounded, unable to speak from the deep penetration to his neck, the warrior staggers in midair to a full retreat, just moving until he finds someone to heal him. He lands and falls at Lian's feet, blood pouring from his neck and saturating his armor. Looking at the monk, there is a touch of fear in the big man's eyes. (Yikes!)

The huge bear roars in anger, keen to fight this unnatural denizen. He lumbers forward, charging at the Balor. He tears into the creature with a claw, slicing through its thick armour. Hit AC 33(1d20+24=33) for 19 damage. Using its massive bulk, the bear then tries to grab the Balor in its huge arms - grapple against DC 52. With an awesome show of strength and power, the bear manages to wrestle the Balor into its enormous arms (Natural 20+32=52). He begins crushing the creature, squeezing his strong arms together (20 nonlethal damage).

Party Results Round 4 [DM Jerry]  6d6(4+5+5+3+4+4)=25
Tuesday October 9th, 2007 7:55:28 PM

Gunther withdraws to get healing.

Lian Heals Gunther. As Lian yells that he thinks that the blade if a Vorpal Blade, he realizes that being two-headed and four-armed, he carries TWO blades and TWO whips.

[just being evil]

Brother Bertram moves within range of Gunther and also casts a mass heal.

Ingrge steps into MELEE RANGE and attack with staff and spell! The beast absorbs the damage from the staff, but takes the Vampiric Tough Damage and Ingrge feels the new hit points surge into him. Then Ingrge's Mordenkainen's sword attacks hitting for the full amount.

[Kent, wasn't sure if the Balor would get DR from the sword. It is a spell and a weapon. So I decided in your favor and let it do full damage.]

Milo Blinks in and attacks hitting. The Balor doesn't take all the damage from the weapon.

[Keep the weapon damage and the holy damage separate please. The DR applies to the weapon damage but not to the holy damage. I'm assuming that holy damage was 6?]

Athalorn moves closer to the balor, 5' away.

Grawl, however, charges striking him and then grappling him! However, the bear quickly finds that grappling with a Balor is not a good idea. The flaming body (see first post about the Balor) does 25hpd fire damage to the bear! [6d6(4+5+5+3+4+4)=25]

-----------
Ingrge and Milo, I need your Grapple Take 10 number please.

Balor's Grapple Take 10 is 50 (10 + Str bonus of 12 + BAB of 20 + 4 for large + 4 for improved grapple=50)

ok working on the monster initiative.

Jerry both Milo and Ingrge have freedom of movement cast upon themselves and automatically succeed on any grapple checks. PHB p233 - Freedom of Movement

But in case the spell is not functioning, Ingrge's Opposed Grapple is 27.

Opponent's Initiative Round 4 [DM Jerry]  d20+16=27
Tuesday October 9th, 2007 8:19:17 PM

The Balor, unable to continue his attacks while grappled, struggles to free himself from Grawl! He first rolls his melee touch attack and gets AC37 touch attack, which should hit. [d20+20=37]

Then he makes his grapple check rolling AC27 and missing. [Athalorn, I'm not sure you figured your attack roll right for the grapple. First, do a touch attack. Then you do the check for the grapple. It is d20 +Str. bonus, -4(special rule), +size(+4 per size above medium), +feats. It is not the sams as in the PHB. :)]

Frustrated, the demon yells out primally, his voice carrying for miles.

Ok, I emailed Cayzle and there is a mistake on the Special Rules document...I think. I should have included the BAB in the grapple check as well as in the Take 10 DC. That would add in +20 to my roll escaping from the bear. But that is "after the fact" of my post, so we'll let it stand. Do recognize, however, that next round the Balor will be much more effective at escaping the grapple. ;)

Ingrge: AC28, 138/102 , 70/70, Arcane sight, see invisibility, freedom of movement, stone skin, Bull's strength, Bigby's interposing hand, Mordenkainen's Sword  d20+15=21 d20+10=12 d20+25=44 d20+25=31 4d6(5+1+2+1)+3=12

The blade of energy again lashes out at the beast connecting solidly and nearly lops off one of its arms but somehow manages to twist away and though it takes some damae it manages to keep its burly limb. AC 44/31 crit threat, no crit - 12 points

Raising a finger to her lips - "Stay down, I'll get you help in a minute," she hisses at the boy, hoping he and his mother are indeed, hardy.

Wednesday October 10th, 2007 1:54:08 AM

ooc: Regarding Grapple. I used house rules (ignoring the mistake) for my grapple roll for Grawl. It was natural 20 roll, +8 size modifier, +16 strength (including Bulls Strength), +8 BAB. No -4 as he has Improved Grab special ability (see house rules) Also, he does not need to make a touch attack first, as he has improved grab and hit with his claw attack. Balor should lose his dex bonus this round to AC, so what is is modified AC?

Ignoring the searing flames, and hoping his allies will come to his aid, the huge bear continues grappling the large demon. He tries to pin the foe to the ground, and manages to do so with another enormous show of strength! (d20 = 18, +8 size, + 8 BAB, + 16 str = 50!) His huge arms tense with the strain. (Balor is now pinned, and suffers a further -4 to AC)

The bear then begins to try and cause more unarmed damage to the Balor, but both attempts are too weak to beat the demon's strength (38 and 34 for grapple checks for these).

ooc: Jerry, what is the Balor's DR? I remember seeing MR but not DR.

Athalorn, still in the form of another Dire Bear, sees an opportunity to attack. His heart filled with awe and pride at Grawl's show of power, yet fearful for the bear's safety again, the druid steps 5' to the pinned Balor, and attacks with as much fury as he can muster.

2 claw attacks hit AC 28, 24 and a Bite hits AC 27 for 15, 19 and the bite for 15 damage. Not sure what AC the Balor has without dex and with -4 for being pinned. Hopefully these might hit!

Jay - if the Balor's AC is lower due to grappling, your critical might be confirmed? He loses Dex and also -4 to AC for being pinned.

Jerry
Wednesday October 10th, 2007 3:16:38 PM

Will start posting a bit later. He was not pinned. He was just grappled. Pinning is another move you have to announce that you are attempting. :)

I did not list the DR for the Balor just as I'm not telling you his current hit points. Instead, I've simply been teling you whether you connected with all your damage or not.

The combat is going well my friends. Good fortune to you. :) ....no for real!

What? You don't believe I have your best interests at heart?

Wednesday October 10th, 2007 3:29:41 PM

Jerry - i am confused. In round three Grawl managed to Grapple the Balor. In the next round (as in last post) I went on to pin him, which is a move you can do once grappled. As per house rules, in order to accomplish this, I had to roll another grapple check.

Lian  2d6(3+5)+5=13

I'm sorry Lian. In my hurry, I didn't see your "pin."

Party Results Round 5 [DM Jerry]
Wednesday October 10th, 2007 6:39:02 PM

Milo wails on the grappled Balor and attacks him hitting 3 times. Milo does not get full damage from his attacks, but it is significant.

Ingrge hits with the blade of energy, but the creature ignores the damage.

Olana fires her arrows and misses.

Grawl changes the grapple to a pin.

[Question here. I see a +16 strength. Did you use his total strength or the strength bonus. It is supposed to be the bonus. If you used the bonus then the bear has a 42 strength which seems high, my friend.]

Athalorn closes to attack. He hits three times, but only one of his attacks do any damage.

Lian hits twice (You only listed one set of damages so I doubled it) doing 13dmg with each attack. Neither attack does any damage to the Balor.

Gunther moves closer.

---------
[Kent, didn't look up Freedom of Movement as it hadn't come into effect. I see now. Thanks.]

AC without dex is AC26.
With the -4 penalty to pin, it is AC22. This probably means that some hit last time. However, just as I didn't go back and correct when I needed to add to the DC of the grapple, we won't go back for the misses either.

We move on. ;) I hope everyone understands and no one is bothered by this.

Opponent's Initiative Round 6 [DM Jerry]
Thursday October 11th, 2007 4:27:31 PM

The Balor tries to power out of the grapple as he did the pin. His back arches with the effort. Hands clawing at the bear! Straining! Pushing! Pulling! And then? He tosses the bear aside hitting DC56 with his grapple check. [the bear ends up 5' away in the bordering square.

It then flies straight up 90' as its move.

Meanwhile...

The Beholder seeing that the Balor is free decides to slow his movement forward. There is no reaction to Ingrge's casting upon him.

Player Results Round 7 [DM Jerry]  d20+22=27 d20+14=17
Monday October 15th, 2007 4:22:52 PM

Athalorn beats the Spell Resist of the Beholder yet does partial damage from the fire portion. He does full damage from the divine part of the spell. Reflex DC27 for half damage succeeding.

Growl follows Athalorn.

Ingrge casts Disintegrate at the Balor beating the SR of the beast yet again! The beast misses his save and takes the full amount!! It collapses unconscious and begins to fall. Just before it hits the ground, it disappears, back to his plain of origin. But not before it drops a few items that were on it!

Milo blinks towards the Balor to find it falling and then returning to its home plane.

Olana looks for new cover. She realizes that either side of the house will serve as the cover she's looking for.

Lian drops back from the falling Balor watching its demise.

As the Balor falls Gunther slices the dead demon a few more times separating an arm and a leg from the demon before it disappears.

Opponents Round 7 [DM Jerry]
Monday October 15th, 2007 4:38:13 PM

The Beholder grins evily as it sees the Balor fall.

It projects into your brains the following message: "Now it's my turn. Prepare to die mighty ones."

It instantly moves forward with a popping sound stoping some 80' away from the party and some 50' up in the air. Then it aims its large anti-magic eye at Ingrge, centering it on him.

[To keep this simple, if you can move 40 or more feet, you can get out of the anti-magic cone. We will assume that everyone on the ground is in its range for now. So if you're flying you're out. Note also that if you're in the anti-magic area, it can't use the other eyes on you unless he shuts the central eye off by closing it.

Please note each round for me if you're flying, in the area of anti-magic, or out of it. Say things like At the back of the beholder. At the beholder's side. etc. Again, since we're not using a map, I'll be lenient with movement. Basically I'll allow whatever you think is fair concerning movement and positioning.]

In the not so far distance, the dust is blowing as whatever it is that is coming comes fast.

[Spot of 32 as a free action to see an occasional reptilian head poke out in front of the sandstorm.]

It is pretty easy to ascertain that the last monster will arrive after one more round.

Athalorn AC 26 HP 106/106  4d6(2+6+2+5)=15 d20+25=29 d20+13=29
Monday October 15th, 2007 5:06:59 PM

Still in Dire Bear form, the druid roars a command at Grawl. He then moves 40' to the side, out of the Anti-Magic zone, but still in front of the Beholder. With another gesture, this time raising an arm forward, another beam of light bursts forth toward the Beholder. Although he can see dust approaching, he is unable to spot anything more (Spot check 1d20+25=29)

Standard Action: Evoke Sunbeam - 15 damage and blinded, Reflex save vs DC 24 to reduce damage to 7 and avoid blindness. If Athalorn can aim specifically at central eye of the Beholder he will. Beats SR 1d20+13=29

Ingrge feels the effects of the anti magic field as it envelpos him and he shudders for a moment as he realized just how vulnerable he has become, but wanting to buy the group a bit more time for the group before their next foe arrives, takes the time to send his interposing hand to intercept the progress of whatever is coming from the dusty area. (spot 27) (move action)

Knowing that he should be safe from the beholder's other magical abilities, while he remains in the cone, Ingrge then instructs the force sword to attack the beholder from the front of, but outside of the anti magic field. AC 32 for 21 points; SR 26 negates. (2nd move action)

"Ok guys and Gals, while his central eye is on me I can not do any magic, but he also can not focus his other eyes to do damage to me either. Brother Bertram AC32 HP88 Stoneskin
Tuesday October 16th, 2007 9:03:10 PM

Bertram sends the Air Elemental at the beholder, hoping to at least rattle the creature, giving the others time to act as well.

Ingrge: AC28, 138/102 , 70/70, Arcane sight, see invisibility, freedom of movement, stone skin, Bull's strength, Bigby's interposing hand, Mordenkainen's Sword  d20+25=37 4d6(6+5+4+4)+3=22

Not really moving out of the anti magic ray's area of effect, hoping to keep the beholder's attention, Ingrge takes a defensive posture and then reaches into his front left pocket and draws forth a red gem. Throwing it so that it lands and breaks outside of the anti magic area, a fire elemental appears awaiting Ingrge's commands.

Olana (HP 68 AC 31 Stoneskin) (subbed by Carl, second post for Round 7)
Wednesday October 17th, 2007 6:19:24 AM

Olana kneels as she reaches back for her next arrow. Her eyes narrow in concentration and she slows her breathing as she gets ready to unleash a hail of arrows at the loathsome floating creature.

Time seems to slow as she tries to empty her mind of all distractions, focusing only on her target. But she finds it difficult to ignore the terrified sobbing of the child behind her and the dreadful image of his murdered family, lying bloodied and burned nearby. How will that horrific event scar the poor boy? What private wounds will he carry with him for the rest of his life?

She grits her teeth and forces herself to concentrate. If they don't take this monstrosity down fast the child will be dead, and the Emerald Dragons along with him. Time enough for counting costs when this thing is done.

(OOC: This is a continuation of Jan's previous post for round 7: +4 to melee AC from cover, +2 from kneeling.)

Player Results Round 8 [DM Jerry]  d20+13=17
Wednesday October 17th, 2007 8:16:37 AM

Athalorn moves to the left with Grawl and fires a Sunbeam at it. The Beholder misses his save!!!! He rolled a 17. The angry beast spins curses. [He loses all dex to AC, but he had none so the point is mute.]

Lian withdraws out of the range of the antimagic zone.

Gunther moves out of the gaze of the Beholder. We'll say he moved to the right.

Ingrge redirects the Interposing Hand to the new foe. However the hand is confused. It seems to need more specific information. It then occurs to Ingrge that there must be more than one foe coming in the cloud! Ingrge's force sword finally experiences what the others have experienced vs. other opponents. Not all the Force Swords damage is taken by the beholder.

Brother Bertram moves AWAY past the range of the big eye and then crushes a gem of air elemental. The Air elemental starts moving towards the Beholder.

Olana finally finds an opponent that is not shrugging off her shots. The Beholder takes her damage from the arrow.

And oops some of you went twice. That's fine when we're not in combat, but in combat, you gotta be patient with me. So I'm kindly cutting Ingrge's and Olana's second move. Please forgive.

Milo draws his bow and makes horrible threats. ::grin::

[I'm going to rule that a natural 20 means he hit someone in range. If I get a natural 20, we'll randomly see who that hit.]

The rays shoot everywhere! Some get mighty close! But none hit anyone.

The dust cloud resolves and 3 large sized raptors, separating and looking to charge in at angles emerge from the dust.

Player Initiative Round 9 [DM Jerry]
Thursday October 18th, 2007 3:42:46 PM

Olana breaks out firing arrows at the beholder. One hits!

Brother Bertram sends the whirlwind towards where the dustcloud was in the direction of the center raptor. [Bertram if you want to attack the raptors, or if there is a save DC involved, you need to list it please. You get to run your own creatures sir. ;) Email me the stats of all such creatures, even though I'll trust you to handle hit points, etc.]

Lian enlarges himself. Probably a very good move!

[Jay, on Monday, I posted that he was 50' in the air. So that is still his height. Sorry I didn't mention that yesterday too.]

Gunther, flies up to the beholder and becomes a blur of motion as he shreddes the beholder! Blads flashing, he succeeds once with his AC44 hit.

Athalorn runs beneath the creature, but can't get at him becaus he is 50' in the air. Grawl is in the same situation. Too high to hit.

[I did get a report of site problems this morning for a short period of time. I think someone tried to post something longer than the message field allowed and it caused a reboot of our site at the server. But that's just a guess and probably a bad one.]

Ingrge, throws a fire gem and it turns into an elemental. Then his blade of force strikes the beholder, doing partial damage.

Milo fires flame arrows at the beholder!

Thursday October 18th, 2007 4:22:51 PM

The beholder stops spinning and concentrates his rays on the "square" where the whirlwind of attacks is coming from: i.e. Gunther. However, it miscalculates (allowed a 25% chance for this) and aims three effects at the Mordenkainen's sword instead![d100=18]

[He has a 50% miss chance and -2 to hit and AC --sorry didn't catch the -2 to hit and AC when blinded last turn so we'll add it here.]

The first ray is Disintegrate! The spell shoots out somewhere else.[d100=32]

The second ray is Finger of Death! It takes, but as the sword is not alive, it has no affect upon it![d100=67]

The third ray is Telekinesis. But the ray goes astray again![d100=9]

----------

The raptors continue circling tetting at the #1 at 10 o'clock, #2 at 2 o'clock, and #3 at 7 o'clock positions.

The #3 is close to Olana. #1 is to the left of the beholder, and #2 is to the right of the beholder.

They stop in position, set to attack next round if they choose. Each is large in size, sharp red teeth, long pointed claws, and intelligence in the eyes.

#3 speaks. "Find a way past our commands and we'll..."

He rares up in pain, convulsing. curling up into what might be a fetal position for a raptor. He rolls on the ground near the house in complete agony.

[It is now player initiative.]

Ingrge also sends the fire elemental in after the beast as well.

Olana winces as the party slam into the raptors. It seems to her that the creature closest to her is trying to tell her they are under some sort of mental control. They are not attacking the party of their own volition. But how to break the commands?

She calls out to her companions "These creatures are being controlled! If we can break the control we may not need to fight them! Can we try dispelling magic on them? Could the beholder be commanding them?"

Trusting that the raptor closest to her is too busy writhing in pain to attack right away, she continues to focus on the beholder, unleashing another stream of arrows.

Ingrge casts Chain Lightning. The Beholder fails the save taking most of the damage. It does seem though that some of the lightning is absorbed through energy resistance. Then the lightning heads out in a circle around the party hitting each of the Raptors. Each of the raptors save taking half damage. On top of that, the raptors seem to diffuse some of that half damage as well with some energy resistance.

Ingrge's Force Blade hits the Beholder again for partial damage due to energy resistance.

The Bigby's Hand moves to block Raptor #2.

Ingrge's Fire Elemental misses each time. [Kent, does the fire damage just have to hit Touch AC to do that part of the damage? I wasn't sure.]

Lian moves towards Raptor #1, but stops near Milo to give him his flying carpet.

Milo hits the Beholder once doing minor damage to it.

Athalorn hits the 3rd Raptor with another Sunbeam. It easily throws off the blidness and takes the damage.

Gunther, shows that he is one of the elite fighters in the Wold by critting the Beholder with his first strike, and hitting one other time. The Beholder throws off the energy damage, since it is minor.

Grawl moves to Raptor 1 attacking and roaring. He hits! and does his damage. All of it! Then he tries to grapple, succeeding.
[Grawl gets to move, claw attack and grapple all in one round? Just checking. Seems a lot, huh my friend?]

Olana hits once for minor damage.

Brother Bertram sends the Elemental into the Beholder. The Beholder misses both saves. It receives the damage and is captured.

[All those closed with the Beholder also have to save vs. the Elemental please. I am assuming that the save is a Reflex save. The DC is 24 as Bertram mentioned.]

The Beholder, now dizzy and scared to death, lets fly with eyes in each direction as he spins in the whirlwind!

Those in the area are:

3)Fire Elemental
4)Lian (next to Milo)
5)Milo firing arrows at it.
6)Athalorn (threw spell at raptor#1, but didn't move)
7) Gunther
8) Olana, but 20% miss chance to partial cover if she is chosen
9) Bertram
10)Air elemental

--------
The random roll is an 8! That's Olana. Rolled the 20% miss chance. The Beholder succeeded at that and so Olana is hit!

It is the 7th eye, so that makes it the Slow spell. Olana please make a Will save DC 23 to avoid the slow effect.

------------

Raptor #1 tried to break loose from Grawl. It succeeds with a mighty effort and throws the huge Bear away from him hitting AC55![d20+36=55] It then moves 80' away from the bear to run at Lian and Milo! It can't attack, but it is now 80' from the bear, which seems a good thing to it.

It then Fastheals back to maximum hps.

Raptor #2 hating the pain from the lightning, charges Ingrge, jumping into the air to perform an Improved Pounce at him allowing all four claws and the bite! It is incredible the speed of these reptiles!
Attacks:
Claw #1 - 23 for 38 if it hits.
Claw #2 - 34 for 34 if it hits.
Claw #3 - 31 for 34 if it hits.
Claw #4 - 33 for 34 if it hits.
Bite - 45 for 58 if it hits.

It then Fastheals back to maximum hps.

-----------

Raptor #3 shakes his head and looks about for who to attack. A spot of check of 37 lets him see Olana. He turns towards her and roars!! But it can't move or attack her this round.

It then Fastheals back to maximum hps.

Olana sees the the magical eye beam heading her way too late to get out of its path; the spell strikes her right between the eyes. She feels her limbs start to grow heavy, and the world around her seems to speed up as she slows down. She glances around in panic; behind her the boy is cowering in terror, clutching his unconscious mother.

She follows his gaze and almost cries out. The raptor has regained its footing, and has its beady reptilian eye fixed directly upon her! And if it gets past her, the child will be next...

The moment of shock breaks the growing power of the spell (DC 24: phew!). Dropping her bow she makes a desperate decision; she surges forward, drawing her shortsword and holding it high as she races towards the raptor.

But she does not swing at the creature. Instead, as she draws close she lifts her sword higher and cries out:

"I don't want to hurt you, but you must tell me; who is commanding you? How are you being controlled? How can we free you? I command you to speak the truth!"

(ooc: Jerry,

1st - fire damage only occurs if the elemental hits with its slam attacks.

2nd - My last post has the Bigby's hand in front of raptor #2 and you have specified that #2 attacked Ingrge, unless it weighs over 2000 pounds it is slowed to half its speed and pounce.

3rd - I will post as if the beast does indeed get past at this point)

Awed at the speed of the beast and its ability to jump, Ingrge is nimble enough to avoid two claws and the air elemental's funnel, but gets caught by 2 raptor claws (68 points) and its massive bite, (58 points) feeling the stone skin slide away from his body (70 points), as well as all the extra energy provided by his attack on the Balor (36 points) and then registers the pain associated with having been bitten. Almost immediately he feels the healing touch from Alathorn (30 points) and Ingrge is back to full strength.

Now angry, the weapon mage draws on his resources and strikes out with his staff releasing a maximized scorching ray spell through it as it strikes home AC 34 for 10 points + 72 points damage from the scorching ray.

Redirecting the force blade to attack the rapor as well it shifts focus and lashes out

The fire elemental once again attacks the now captured Beholder (any adjustments to AC ?) and connects with his last attack AC 25 (natural 20) for 10 points + 12 points fire damage.

[Kent, I messed up and forgot about the hand. You take no damage sir and Athalorn can save his spell.]
[Athalorn, what threw me with the Improved Grab ablity is that it looks like the Dire Bear is pretty much the only monster that only has to hit with just one claw to get the Improved Grab result. All other monsters have to hit with both slams or both claw attacks to get the result.]

Lian attacks Raptor #1 hitting it twice! It roars in pain!

Athalorn runs to Ingrge to see if he's been hurt, but his Bigby's Hand has saved him!

Gunther keeps flailing at the Beholder. However, the beholder is now spinning in the whirlwind! [Gunther needed to make a Reflex Save DC24 or be captured by the elemental. I rolled for him and he saved! [d20+8=26--I show Gunther with a +8 to Reflex.]

[Since the beholder is spinning around and around he is harder to hit. I'm going to give partial concealment to the Beholder. That's a 20% miss chance.]

Gunther overcomes both miss chances and gets his two hits! Again, the Beholder throws off the minor energy damage.

Grawl follows Athalorn charging Raptor #2 which lets him reach it. He leaves #1, which earns him an Attack of Opportunity! Raptor #1 hits AC31 for 58hpd.

Grawl hits Raptor #2 for 17pts dmg. and grapples the Raptor. The sound the Raptor makes as his ribs are crushed is surprising: something more like a whimper.

Ingrge glad for the protection of the hand, strikes out at Raptor #2! He hits it for normal damage and then with a ton of fire damage!

The Fire Elemental strikes at the beholder bypasing the Concealment 20% miss chance. It needs to save vs. the whirlwind, however.[Kent, you can make his save next round.] The elemental reaches inside the air elemental to strike at it and hits!

Milo moves into a flanking position across from Olana on Raptor #3.

Olana, always a cool head in battle, uses her weapon, The Truthsayer, to make Raptor #3 talk. She demands that it tell her the truth!

The Raptor's eyes grow wide with terror as the powers controlling it battle. Its head jerks back and forth. The beast actually rises off the ground spinning slowly in a circle!

Then, with a wrench, his head begins to spin around. A horrible sound is then heard: that of a neck breaking along each vertebrae!

The beast collapses to the ground, his life force leaving his body.

But its eyes weakly turn to Olana. "Its the artifact. It makes us attack when free from the tree."

Then the poor beast is dead.

[Edited post. Got confused as to which Raptor was being attacked by whom.]

The Beholder, trashed and thrashed, is near death. One last time it tries to exact revenge on these vile heroes. He focuses on the air elemental with all 10 rays. As he's inside it, that is possible.

The elemental needs to make the following saves:

[all saves are DC23]

First ray is charm Person, which doesn't work.
Will save or Charm Monster. Instructions are to fly straight up taking the Beholder with him.
Will save or sleep.
Fort save or Flesh to Stone.
Fort Save or Disintegrate. Fail and 72hpd[20d6(6+4+3+2+5+5+4+2+3+4+3+5+4+2+1+4+2+6+4+3)=72] Save and 16hpd[5d6(4+3+5+1+3)=16]
Will save or Fear--Fail and panicked for 20 rounds. Save and shaken for 1.
Will save or Slow
Will save or Critical Wounds 43hpd[4d8(6+1+8+8)+20=43]
Fort save or Finger of Death and slain. Save and 2d8+10.
Will save or Telekinesis moving the beast AND the Beholder 250feet up in the air.

--------

When Raptor #3 goes down, both the other raptors let loose with a keening call which could only be distress. But they don't stop fighting...can't stop fighting.

Raptor #1, seeing Growl as the greatest threat, charges after the beast. Leaping into the air as it closes, it rips into him with an Improved Pounce!
Claw #1 hits AC40 for 29hpd
Claw #2 hits AC38 for 29hpd
Claw #3 hits AC38 for 34hpd
Claw #4 hits AC37 for 35hpd
The Bite hits AC40 for 47dmg.
[luckily with its pounce it can't do its rend attack.]

Then the Raptor fast heals some hit points back.

-----------

Raptor #2 tries to break free from Growl and succeeds. It then withdraws 80' (normal move) from the bear turning to face it again.

Then the Raptor fast heals some hit points back.

As raptor 1 returns to strike at the large bear, Grawl gives an almighty cry of pain as his enormous body is slashed to ribbons by the enemy. Once again, Grawl collapses in a bloody heap to the ground.

Olana watches the raptor die with a mixture of horror, pity and (she is forced to admit) some small measure of relief. The artefact made it attack when free from the tree... Obviously the creature was referring to the red dragon's amulet.

Pausing only to meet Milo's eyes in silent acknowledgement of his protectiveness, she turns and sprints towards the nearest raptor. One again she holds her sword aloft, but this time her heart is heavy; she knows the price the creatures must pay to speak the truth. Though that sorrow is strong, the sight of Grawl's still and bloody form steels her resolve. She must act.

Drawing close she calls out to the creature "I am sorry for what I have to do, but I know of no other way. Tell me of the dragon's amulet! How is it controlling you, and how might its hold be broken? What power placed and held you at the heart of a tree?"

Player Results Round 12 [DM Jerry]
Wednesday October 24th, 2007 3:06:32 PM

Lian strikes at Raptor #1 hard and heavy! It is shredded from head to tail, but still amazingly stands!

Gunther moves to Raptor #2 and strikes at it once doing full damage. The fire damage is ignored.

Bertram orders the elemental the 50' to the ground. The elemental ignores the Flesh to Stone as it is not made of flesh. [Hey I looked it up! Imagine that!] The elemental turns back into its natural form to accomplish the order.

The beholder falls with it, but stops before hitting the ground using its natural abilities. It is burned, cut up, banged, blinded, and bleeding. But it still breathes!

Grawl, falls to the ground! Is it dead again? [send me hit points by email please.]

Athalorn, in renewed anguish for the second time in as many days, moves to attack Raptor #1.

Olana runs to Raptor #2. She repeats the grisly process. The 2nd Raptor turns to Olana defenseless and speaks, "I know not milady what might break the dragon's amulet. I saw a light at the dragon's chest and then I was trapped in the tree. Forever it seemed."

This Raptor seems to have great control of his pain and body for he just stands there as something destroys him from the inside. He sits down, lays on his side and then with a sigh, passes from this life.

Ingrge sends a Lightning Bolt at the Beholder. It absorbs some of the attack, but it is enough. It tries to focus his main eye on Ingrge one last time, but falls tot he ground and like a leaking children's ball slowly begins to deflate.

The force blade strikes at the dead form of the 2nd Raptor.

The fire elemental realizing that the Beholder is dead returns to stand by Ingrge awaiting his next order.

Wednesday October 24th, 2007 6:17:34 PM

Olana begins to raise her sword for a third time, but looking and the pitiful state of the last remaining raptor she almost cannot bring herself to do it. The creature stands all but defenceless against the combined might of the Emerald Dragons, and surely will be cut down in seconds.

She feels sick at what she has had to do; these three creatures were intelligent. They even had an air of nobility about them, despite their fearsome appearance. And because of Parnoth's underling they were first imprisoned, then forced to fight to the death in a battle that was not their own. Their deaths hang heavy on her conscience.

Moving close she looks the ravaged beast square in the eye, the Truthsayer hanging limply by her side.

"I am sorry we were unable to save you. All I can offer you is the promise that if I can, I will avenge you. Now tell me who you are, and the name of the dragon that bound you. May your death be swift."

Party Results Round 13 [DM Jerry]
Monday October 29th, 2007 10:44:50 AM

Lian once again tears into the remaining Raptor. He hits twice!

The raptor teeters, but remains alive!

Then Gunther comes and swipes once! The head comes off! The body falls over. It is dying.

The head rolls over and looks at Olana. It speaks. "You know its name. Par...."

And it is dead.

[Combat over]

The stench of blood and other bodily fluids is strong in the area. All that remains is helping the farmer's family.

---------
Sorry for the nonposting. Death in the family. My cousin. His two sons died last year in a crash. That leaves the mother of the family as the lone survivor. We weren't that close, but its weird that at times like that they want us "church going folk" there. So mom, dad, and I went.

-------------

I'm doing a rework on the finale of this module for Jan and then will send the module to her. We'll probably be switching DMs now that the Plats will end in the next few days so I can start the new Plat game.

Athalorn
Monday October 29th, 2007 3:28:47 PM

Moving to the corpse of the great bear, the druid looks over the bloody heap. The bear had certainly shown its courage this time; wrestling with a great demon like the Balor, and again with the vicious Raptors. His actions against the Balor had almost certainly helped prevent injury or death to The Dragons.

The druid reverts to human form, kneeling on the ground near Grawl's corpse. The bear had returned with incredible strength last time. Somehow, Athalorn knew this time the bear would not be coming back.

Milo
Monday October 29th, 2007 5:16:25 PM

Moving over to Athalorn and the fallen Grawl, Milo kneels down by the head of the great animal opposite the druid. "I'm fairly certain that Grawl saved my life today. How do you repay such a debt?" Milo looks up gravely at Athalorn.

Olana (Subbed by Carl)
Monday October 29th, 2007 5:40:21 PM

Olana gazes into the creatures dying eyes, her heart heavy. "Parnoth" she whispers. "More lives to answer for."

She turns to her companions, and notices the curious expressions on some faces.

"The raptor closest to me tried to tell me how to break the power that bound them into Parnoth's service, but the effort caused it pain."

She holds up the sword, her face sombre, gazing at it with a mixture of awe and horror. "The Truthsayer obliges any near it to speak the truth. I could see these creatures were intelligent. I could see they were fighting against their will. And I knew that by demanding the truth I would either cause them unbearable pain or slay them. But I couldn't think of any other way to protect ourselves and the innocents nearby. May Alemi forgive me, I chose to end their lives, though I knew they were not truly our enemies."

Her gaze falls to the bloodstained dirt at her feet, and she struggles to throw off the crushing weight of the guilt she feels. She fails.

But a spark of anger flares within her. Her guilt has a cause, and a familiar one. She looks up once more, gazing into the faces of her most trusted comrades with anger blazing in her eyes.

"I share in Parnoth's guilt at these deaths. His evil has touched me, stained my soul in a way I didn't imagine possible. And for that, beyond all the other countless wrongs he has committed, I will see him dead. Someday, somehow, I will see him dead."

She rubs a hand across her face, and hears the sound of a sobbing child. She looks up at Ingrge.

"There is a boy back there. He seemed uninjured, but his mother was unconscious, and his father and sister... We need to see to the woman's wounds, and get them to safety."

OOC: Sorry to hear your news Jerry. It's never easy.

Lian

OOC: Sorry to hear about your family member(s) Jerry.

The monk looks at Gunther. "I'm glad to see your old attitude return just in time Gunther! Knara has made you soft." Thumping him in the arm, the elf winks and smiles.

Ingrge
Monday October 29th, 2007 8:39:44 PM

Olana, they are better of free and dead than slaves to Parnoth, so in a way while we are guilty of their deaths, we also are the cause of their freedom. Although I will bear the burden of these beasts' deaths as it was I who allowed the Serpent star out of our hands.

Olana, can you sue this cure moderate wand to heal what can be healed of the family. We can use the others to heal whoever needs to be healed of our party. (will use however many charges need to be used)

"Ladies and Gents, I can't speak for you all, but I think there is a certain green dragon and his lady that need to be paid a visit. If we decide to do this there must be no wavering from the task and it is likely that he will know we are coming. If we can rest tonite I can try and prepare a few things that might keep him occupied while we come close to him. if we do we need to be buffed, and prepared like no other fight before. So what do you think?"

Bertram quickly starts healing wounds with the aid of the other priests, trying to get everyone back to full health in case of another attack.

Gunther
Tuesday October 30th, 2007 12:14:09 AM

The warrior grins at Lian's teasing and thumps him on the back in return. "Yes...vell...just don't tell her ven **she** returns, eh?!"

Looking over at Ingrge, the cat trainer flexes his muscles. "I'm alvays up for a goot fight. Just point me in de right direction."

Noting his grieving, Gunther lays a hand on Athalorn's back. He knows what it's like to morn the loss of a good friend. "He died in battle. He vas a goot friend. You should be proud." If he desires, Gunther helps the druid bury his companion.

OOC: It's good to be back!!

Athalorn
Tuesday October 30th, 2007 2:51:24 AM

The hand on his back wakes him from reverie, and Athalorn nods. "Thank you my friend. The fault for his death, like the creatures', lies at the foot of Parnoth. I will bury Grawl tonight if we are to rest nearby. If we truly are going to visit the Green fiend then we need much rest indeed."

Lian
Tuesday October 30th, 2007 9:10:19 AM

Lian seems unconcerned about Athalorn's friend's death. It did return before, it'll be back. :)

The monk waits for further instruction from Ingrge.

Aftermath [DM Jerry]
Tuesday October 30th, 2007 9:34:03 AM

The bear remains still. Then a soft, but powerful voice speaks into Athalorn's mind. He is not content. Being with you has given him a soul. You must bring him back...the Druid way.

The folks from across the road that called you via the Dragonstone go running to the farmer's house.

Athalorn
Tuesday October 30th, 2007 2:27:11 PM

Athalorn looks up to the running figures, but a voice draws his mind. Something familiar, yet unknown.

He closes his eyes, focusing on that voice, the leaf of the Culverclove tightly held in his grasp; a reminder of the forest from which he and the bear had come. In his mind, he goes over the words, a prayer to the Culverwood itself. Would Grawl return again? Surely two deaths in as many days was enough for any soul? Then again, the bear was courageous. He had proven that much. Perhaps he needed more time to pray?

Lian
Tuesday October 30th, 2007 3:43:28 PM

Moving to Ingrge, the monk looks at the fleeing folks and says, "Do you think it was a ploy... an attempt to do us in?" Frowns the elf.

Brother Bertram
Tuesday October 30th, 2007 3:56:54 PM

Bertram goes running to the family members and examines them.

Olana (subbed by Carl)
Tuesday October 30th, 2007 7:37:34 PM

The elf assists Brother Bertram as best she is able. She is grateful, for Ingrge's kind words, but cannot shake her feeling of culpability.

She looks up at Lian's words, then towards the running villagers.

"No, I don't think so. I think they are coming to see if they can help, now the danger is passed. For some though, it is too late."

She digs a blanket from her pack and uses it to cover the charred and savaged remains of the farmer and his daughter. Some sights should not be seen by child. Or a wife, for that matter.

Milo
Wednesday October 31st, 2007 12:19:14 AM

Looking grimly to Ingrge, "I think that it is about time after all."

Lian
Wednesday October 31st, 2007 3:46:25 AM

The monk shrugs to Olana.

Why? [DM Jerry]
Wednesday October 31st, 2007 11:08:51 AM

Olana and Bertram run over to the farmer's family.

Olana notices as she starts to put the blanket over the father, who still holds his burned daughter in his lap that he still lives....barely. Even with all the blood loss from having his legs bitten off.

The son and mother are still there. The boy lays his monther's fainted body to the ground and goes over to his dad, crying in total panic.

"WHYYYYY! Where are the gods to help us? What good are they if they allow such beasts to rule our lives!!!!

"WHYYYYYY!!!!"

Olana (subbed by Carl)
Wednesday October 31st, 2007 12:20:30 PM

Olana gazes down at the farmer, and gives a start as she sees his chest move. Beyond all odds the savaged man still lives. But not for long unless they move fast.

"Betram! Quickly, the farmer is still alive! He needs healing quickly, we may yet be able to save him."

She turns to intercept the boy, kneeling and putting a hand on his shoulder. "I have no easy answer for you, child. Sometimes the gods can seem cruel. But they can be bountiful too, if you have faith. Don't despair yet child: hold on to hope and the gods may yet be merciful."

Hearing Olana's cries for help, the warrior muscles his way over to the farmer. Good night, the man is still alive! Gunther reaches down and lightly touches the man on the shoulder. He knows he can't do much, but at least he can stop the blood from flowing until Brother Bertram can get there. The cat trainer shivers as the healing magic flows from the tattoo on his chest and into the farmers body (Cure Moderate Wounds-14hp healed).

Ingrge
Thursday November 1st, 2007 6:41:04 PM

Walks over and takes a closer look at the dragonstone and then looks to the sky.

Domi, why, now of all times, have you decided to place me in charge of this group? You know I do not like to lead and yet you keep pushing me. And now it seems like we have three dragons to deal with.

The elder elf looks tired as he looks back at the boy as he screams about his father and the gods.

At least give the boy back his faith in the gods by restoring his father to full health and mobility so he can have a life worth living for.

Reaching out Ingrge strokes the dragonstone and then turns back to the rest of the Talons.

"Ok Talons, Are we going to pay the green meanie one final visit or are there other thoughts?"

Lian
Thursday November 1st, 2007 7:23:43 PM

Lian places his hand on Ingrge's shoulder. "Friend, the stress is getting to you now! We're not Talons anymore, we're Dragons." The last two words are slow and deliberate.

"I say that after tomorrow, we should be the only Green Ones in the Culver." He smirks.

Athalorn
Friday November 2nd, 2007 2:43:21 AM

Looking again at the corpses of beasts littering the ground, Athalorn turns to Ingrge. "I think it is time, Ingrge, my friend. Let us rest well then travel to him. What do we know of Parnoth that will help me choose my spells wisely?"

Lian
Friday November 2nd, 2007 4:41:22 AM

Answering Athalorn's question, Lian says, "Well, Ol' Greenie tends to the fight or flight approach, choosing to flee rather than stand against his foes. The one exception was when the Gold Dragons took a pound of flesh, removing his claw. They must have restrained him.
He also has opted to leave his minions to his foes as a type of hindrance to allow for escape."

"So, Dimensional Anchor, summon spells to occupy the minions...." Looking at Ingrge. "...Flesh to Stone was most affective today. And as he has a metal claw, perhaps heat metal or something to melt his claw, or transmute it to something brittle.
Maybe Controlling Winds?"

"He's a poor flier. He's a green, so any protection from acid and plants would be good."

"But I'm most interested in his minions. Mop is going to be an issue."

Olana (Subbed by Carl)
Friday November 2nd, 2007 5:11:47 AM

Olana nods at Lian's words.

"True enough. Parnoth has not lived this long by tackling every challenge head on. He will get others to do his fighting for him if he can, and if the odds look bad he will attempt to flee. Limiting his mobility and enhancing our own would be sensible strategies."

Bitter Tears and Hope [DM Jerry]
Friday November 2nd, 2007 12:00:31 PM

A young gnome and his two halfling friends come running down the road.

"There they are!"

Then run up to you, out of breath.

"Where is he?"

"Has to be that one!" He points to Athalorn.

The third is brandishing an old twig as if it was precious. He runs up to Athalorn, falls to one knee and presents the twig bowing as if Athalorn was a king.

As Athalorn takes the twig, he recognizes that it contains a spell, from the Ancient:

"Reincarnation."

----------

The bloodflow is stopped on the farmer. He will live. The color begins to return to his face. However, his legs are still gone, though sealed off neatly from the spells.

The father's eyes open and the boy bullrushes him in full panic.

"PAPA!!"

"My son."

Tears of joy, remembered pain, concern, and fatherly pride as the father and son embrace.

Then the father sees the daughter. Burned beyond recognition. Dead.

The tears turn bitter as he screams out his agony to the sky!

"AAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!"

-----------

Thanks for my opportunity to DM you for the last few months. I've enjoyed it.

Jan will take over as your new DM on Monday.

The warrior looks over at Ingrge and the others with firm resolve. "Didn't I hear dat he has treatened attack from Izen if he is removed? I should probably let Borden know that he should ready his troops." Gunther sighs. He'd meant to travel back to Izen and visit with Borden. He'd even meant to spend a good deal of time arming and training his troops. Things were moving too fast. .. He looks over at Ingrge. "Can I use de ring? I need to tell Borden in person and I vant to give him some money to equip his troops. Ve'll need dem to be ready for the attack should it come."

Bertram feels frustration at only being able to save the farmers life and not his legs. He walks off to the edge of the clearing and tries to refocus himself for the task at hand. There was just too much suffering in this world. And always it was being caused by the same ones over and over. Surely it could be ended....

((OOC - howdy folks! Please forgive me if we're a bit out of whack with time of day and so forth, till I get my bearings. :) ))

((Also - lets not forget we have the ongoing celebration in the Giggling Ghost. I see some of you are there already - yay!))

And in the aftermath, others have come. In this rural section of the land, outside Emerald City, people live some distance from on another and yet everyone seems to know everyone else.
Four sturdy men - a father and three grown up sons, sandy-haired, hands calloused and shoulders broadened with working the land, offer the Dragons, and the wounded father and son, somewhere to get a meal, wash and rest up.
"My name is Hornish," says the older man. "We're about a mile east of here. Whatever we've got, you can borrow or have."

Time is late afternoon, and the sun is already skirting the trees and starting to dip toward the horizen. And in the oncoming gloom there is a lot to think over, much to plan.

Who is this female red dragon?
What about those marriage priests?
What of the great tree, on its way toward the city?
What is Parnoth up to, and where is he? And what will the group encounter when they come face to face with the kingdom's fearsome ruler?

Lian
Monday November 5th, 2007 2:14:32 PM

(OOC Hey there new DM person, ;) we'll go easy on ya!)

While at dinner that evening, the elf expresses concerns.
"If we dethrone Parnoth, who is take his place? The current prospects are no better, really. I suggest placing someone there who everyone likes or at least respects. We can't just leave the Kingdom in chaos. However, I know there are many things to consider."

"Actually, with what we know is going on, Parnoth may have made a pact with the other dragons."

"I don't know, just concerned about everyone in the Kingdom, including us!"

Athalorn
Monday November 5th, 2007 2:52:48 PM

Before leaving, the druid grasps the twig handed to him by the gnome and his halfling friends. Sensing its power, he stares at the three shortfolk.

"You have my thanks, friends. Did the Ancient send this directly? Perhaps you could tell us if the spirit has begun moving again, or is he still at rest?"

After waiting for a response, Athalorn tries to direct the twig's magic at the bloodied corpse
of Grawl, watching to see what will happen to the creature's form.

------------------

At the meal, Athalorn shares in Lian's concerns. "What is the role of this Ancient spirit? Clearly, something is soon to happen that will change the course of history. Is the death of Parnoth prophesised?"

"Surely the Ancient will destroy the city, being an abomination to nature. This Ancient is as ill an omen as its glorious arrival. If we kill Parnoth and oust his minions, we need to figure on a new sitting ruler of the Kingdom. If the Ancient kills Parnoth, we need to figure on a new sitting ruler of the Kingdom. Either way, Parnoth is hosed and we're left with chaos to clean up after. The citizens will look to us, either good or bad. And the Consortium is going to look to us sooner, rather than later. The Dragons are retiring and we'll be left holding the proverbial bag."

Milo
Monday November 5th, 2007 6:29:20 PM

"Um... I vote for Ingrge to be king." Milo eats well that evening, frustration doing nothing at all to the halfling's appetite.

Brother Bertram
Monday November 5th, 2007 6:38:24 PM

Bertram snorts at Milo's suggestion. "There may be no better qualifed to rule the kingdom, Friend Milo, But I can see Friend Ingrge becoming disgusted with some petitioner and ordering his head removed and catapaulted into the Culver." Bertram grins easily at Ingrge and goes back to eating. His mood quickly fades as he considers how he may best help the injured farmer now that he has lost his means of making a living.

Ingrge
Monday November 5th, 2007 7:55:29 PM

As the discussion moves around certain topics, Ingrge puts his two cents worth in.

I expect that the female red we just encountered is to be Parnoth's mate and queen, and hence why our priestly froends were on their way to see the green meanine.

I personally would like to see the Ancient tree tear Parnoths palace down around his ears, however that would probably mean that a lot of innocents would be hurt and or killed.

As to what we can expect when we face Parnoth, well he is an expert in scrying magics and has had years to beef up his security, so it is likely he will know we are coming even before we do. I expect that we will be facing at least two dragons when we do attack. I say at least, because I find it odd that suddenly Parnoth has a red bride and we were hunting a male red. I would put golds to rocks that or bride to be is related to the red that attacked us and we will be dealing with him as well. Add to that Parnoth's use of his two artifacts that control his hidden monsters and we will more than have our hands full.

If we decide to actually do this thing, we need to somehow enlist the aid of some local adventurers and the Tines and others to help deal with the peripheral issues while we deal with Parnoth, his lady and her relative.

Quiet for a while Ingrge eats in silence and listens to the others as thy coment on this and that.

He looks up at Milo's and Bertram's comments, and simply shakes his head.

I know that at one time K'nara believed me to be the one to do just that. I personally think I would be the worst choice possible. Besides, what would you all do without me?

Milo's suggestion finally breaks through Olana's dark mood, and she breaks into a smile. "Heavy hangs the crown, eh Ingrge? She glances gratefully at Milo. She marvels at his ability to lift her spirits without even trying.

DM Jan
Tuesday November 6th, 2007 2:45:24 PM

As the various rural inhabitants help the Dragons pack up and move out, Athalorn directs the twig's spell toward poor Grawl's ripped carcass. An hour passes, and in that time, the bear's corpse becomes dessicated, as though what's left of it's lifeblood and water has been taken.
A litter is built to carry the farmer over to Hornish's place, while some folk attempt to round up any animals that might have bolted, and graves are dug for the dead.
So, by the time the hour is up, most folks are well on their way to Hornish's farmhouse, with only Athalorn left, accompanied by a few curious hangers-on, there to watch the spectacle of a druid in action. In the approaching twilight, something appears to be resting alongside the bear's corpse.
That something lifts its head.
"Oh, $^&$#@!," utters one of the men, standing by. "C'mon, I think it's time we left."

Left alone, Athalorn faces a pair of hard yellow eyes. A mixture of curious, accusing, mistrustful, and calculating accents whirl within them. It is a dire wolf, a female. She stands and shakes a shaggy grey coat, then assumes the hard stare once more. Trust will be hard won with this one.
Does the spirit remember the slaughter? Maybe there is pleasure in this stare then, backed up as it is with muscle and fang, to imply an upper hand.

Later, at the Hornish farmhouse, the atmosphere is one of a village feast, as more people have arrived to swell the numbers to around forty, bringing food and kegs of ale to add to the supplies. After all, it isn't every day that one gets to eat and drink alongside a group of famous adventurers. And after what just happened earlier today, people are frightened and eager for news and reassurance.

Talk of sedition has a mixed effect. Some folk move away into their own little groups, chattering, frightened and worried about a future of dragons and monsters let loose, what would come next and the age old 'threat of Izen', despite the power shift during the latest Cataclysm.
Others gather close, eager to be part of what they consider a justified rebellion. "What could be worse than Parnoth?" one asks. "How can we help?"

Bertram discovers that some of the other farmers have offered to take the boy and his father in, although it looks like the boy will have to work hard to earn their keep.

The morning arrives.
A course of action needs to be decided upon. Emerald City and the palace lies 5 miles to the south; Parnoth's lair is 5 and a half miles to the south west.

(Does Gunther still wish to contact Borden?)

Tuesday November 6th, 2007 3:03:06 PM

Bertram requests a small cottage and asks for the farmer to be brought to him and then orders everone out. He gives the farmer a powder to put him in a deep sleep. He asks a couple of the stouter lads to keep watch and keep everyone out no matter what and begins to pray to Domi. Time passes and sweat drips from his body as he murmurs the strange liquid syllables over and over. He dares not look down to see if his prayers are having an effect. Looking down for reassurance was the first sign of a lack of faith. He gripped his symbol harder and prayed fervently. Finally he collapsed onto the ground. He now wanted to look but was so weak and so tired that he could not lift his head. Finally he raised his head enough to see the farmer lying there, his body whole and intact. Two complete legs, with skin as fresh and pink as a babies. Bertram smiles wearily. He tries to let the two outside know that it was ok but he lacked the energy. He fell back onto the floor and fell into a deep slumber.

Watching the strange and ancient magic course through the fallen body of the bear, and the spirit that grows adjacent, the druid smiles at the yellow eyes.

"My sister. Welcome back."

Athalorn stays still. Watching the strong spirit that is imbued in this new beast. A strong companion. They study each other, standing alone in the dusk for a long time. The druid moves closer, slowly, a hand outstretched palm up, his heart reaching out, asking for help.

ooc: Wild Empathy check = 1d20+16=36, natural 20. Is this a standard Dire Wolf as per usual Druid rules? I will work up stats and add to character sheet. Will my Gunther's wreaths of animal communication work with this new companion?

---------------------

Speaking with the Dragons about what to do next, Athalorn speaks bluntly. "We must share a conviction if we are to take the fight to Parnoth, for it will be hard. For my part, I have waited an age for this time. And now I have found such strength in you all, I think the time is right. Let us march on the Green tomorrow! I will send word to my kin in the Sacred Circle of the Culverwood, for this will affect all the great wood."

Milo
Tuesday November 6th, 2007 4:46:59 PM

Milo smiles warmly at Ingrge, "You could be an active kind... not one of those louts that sits on a big fancy chair all day long and issues decrees... and I'll run your spy network." The halfling marvels at his own idea as it escapes his lips, "Ya know... I just made that one up... but I like the sound of that."

(Occ. name change for Ingrge to Kingrge j/k hehe)

Sighing Ingrge looks around at his fellow Emeralds. Ok guys I suggest we pop back to our tow ... castle to do our planning, as it is protected against scrying.

Turning to the farmers, Ingrge stands. Thank you for your hospitality and aid, but we must be on our way. That said ingrge takes out the ring and beckons to his fellow emeralds.

Lian
Wednesday November 7th, 2007 2:40:18 PM

He smiles at Ingrge, but says nothing.

Hearing Milo's statement about the spy netwrk, the elf perks up. "You know... I can only see that being a good thing! I'm sure Parnoth has his network as do all the other shady folk about. A network of adventurers linked to the Consortium MAY BE a great strength. We could have our hands in Izen, Culver and all around." The monk, who is generally keen on staying out of politics and intrigue, suddenly seems quite interested. He pats the halfling on the top of the head and says, "We've got power now. You should look into it, friend."
Chris Highlight to display spoiler: {I know there is a rogue's guild out of Dirt City, but an adventurer run network might prove interesting!}

When his time is designated, Lian slides on the ring and passes it on. He teleports with the others. Home will be welcome, if only for short time.
