River of Blood
Thursday October 25th, 2007 9:44:31 AM

Jovawaves his wand as you fly, and the small divination sensor winks out of existence. Feeling good about his triumph, Jova then begins waving the wand into the fog in various directions. Each time he does so, the fog in that area seems to darken and convulse for a moment, then returns to its prior state.

The group takes care of some healing, and flies on until it sees the blood trickling from the ally (it's been about 15 minutes of travel, so please determine whether Monthor used boots or something else, and treat all fly spells/potions accordingly).

After some discussion, Tratain feels it best to investigate.

As you walk toward the ally, Horvis puts his nose near the blood and breathes in. The stench of semi-fresh blood fills his nostrils. Horvis Highlight to display spoiler: {It's a bit confusing. You definitely smell human blood. You also smell what seems to be elven mixed in, but you don't think it is the blood of a half-elf. There are distinct odors.}

Arien attempts to guage the type of creature, but is unable to do so. The trickle of blood disappears into the ally, and without knowing how far it leads, it is impossible to know how much blood there might be.

On Tratain's suggestion, the group heads into the ally. As you walk, the trickle of thick, reddish-brown blood widens into a tiny stream. Soon, it is wider still, now nearly a foot across and flowing more visibly.

The ally around you is narrow compared to the broad streets, only 6 feet wide in most places. The tall walls, where they are still present, provide constant shadows that seem to move at the corner of your sight. In some places, the walls have crumbled, and are simply piles of rock and rubble.

Between the tall, dirty walls and the fog obscuring all vision overhead, one might begin to feel quite claustrophobic.

Continuing on, you look down to find that the ground is now awash in blood. A wide, thick stream covers almost 3 feet of the ground, and the walls are splattered with it in places as well.

In the distance ahead, you suddenly hear a scream. A woman's voice cries out in pain and anguish, then after a few seconds, is suddenly replaced by a thud and a loud gurgling sound, almost as if someone - or something - were drowning.

"A river of sacrifice indeed Lumi" Vedic states grimly, looking up and down the street for any signs of the source.

When the scream pierces the street, Vedik tenses. Heeding Tratains words that its probably not an innocent ahead, he moves forward with the party, weapon ready.

Tratain AC 28 HP 119/119
Thursday October 25th, 2007 1:24:07 PM

Tratain says "Lets go take a look and see what that was, everyone be careful though, in this place we can't be sure of what we'll find. I'd like the invisibility wand used on Jova, Juliander, and Arien. You three say close to us since we won't be able to see you, if things get bad it may give us an advantage and keep you guys safe for a moment or two if we are attacked up there."

When the three are invisible, Tratain moves forward with the group weapons ready.

Lumi-Juova (AC 24, HP 121/124)  d20+14=30 d20+14=21
Thursday October 25th, 2007 1:31:23 PM

The white wemic is happy with Arien's fly spell and is more than happy to carry the elf in his arms until the spell expires. The warrior is less happy with the width of the alley or the woman's screams.

His first inclination is to rush in, but he is aware that the last time he wanted to do that, Jova was killed. And that Traitain was correct.

Instead, Lumi readies his sword (light spell) and axe and follows in single file behind Monthor to go cautiously up the alley. (Listen: 30, Spot: 21)

Draax returns to the ground when the flying potion wears off.

He readies his sword and shield and cautiously moves ahead with the others.

Not wanting to be too late to help someone in need, but still not willing to throw caution to the wind Juliander casts greater invisibility on himself. "I'm going in for a closer look guys... invisibly." That said, the bard flies ahead toward the sound of drowning.

Monthor

Following the war leader's plan, Monthor stands ready next to Tratain and follows him.

The griffon follows the others, keeping pace with them as they fly. Horivs sees that Monthor may need assistance, he speaks up with what passes as a chuckle for a griffon.

"Monthor! Can you ride?"

After sniffing at the blood, Horvis tells his companions what he could tell.

"Elf and human blood, mixed together. Not a half-elf, but like the blood of two or more people got mixed together."

The scream and the sounds of fighting draw Horvis' attention. He takes to the air, trying to fly above his companions to provide protection against flying opponents and get a better view of what is ahead.

River of Blood 2
Friday October 26th, 2007 1:43:09 PM

Upon hearing the screaming, the party prepares for the worst. Advancing slowly on Tratain's direction, you slog along the messy ground.

Your boots are splattered with reddish-brown ichor, and you now see small bits and pieces of other material mixed in with the blood. One can only offer horrified guesses as to what those chunks may be.

Juliander makes himself invisible and scurries ahead to scout the situation. [Juliander, choose your own spot on the map that will be posted over the weekend, you would arrive a round before everyone else. Take a surprise action if desired]

The group doesn't need to travel very long. After a few moments, the alley opens into a wide courtyard. Looking around at the scene, you wretch involuntarily. The walls of the surrounding buildings are literally covered in blood and gore. At least 10 bodies hang from chains, or lay impaled by long spikes driven into the ground. You see humans, elves, man and woman. None have retained all of their limbs. Most have their stomachs opened, innards trailing around the courtyard, and some have even had their skin removed. One body is still moving. A human woman, hanging upside-down from a barbed chain, twitches slightly as the last of her life escapes, a long spear driven through her neck.

Standing around, laughing and talking are five . . . things. They appear to be about 10 feet tall, with wide, leathery wings. Spikes protrude from their arms, legs, heads and backs. They carry long spiked chains slung over their shoulders. Their scaly skin is a grayish-black, their faces almost draconic in appearance.

Two of them are busy poking the woman and laughing. Spot check DC40 Highlight to display spoiler: {It's almost imperceptible, but these two appear to be laughing and poking in the exact same way over and over again}

Knowledge (Planes) DC25 Highlight to display spoiler: { These are Horned Devils, otherwise known as Cornugons. You know the information in the MM entry and can relate it to your companions}

[Map will come soon, I just don't have time right this minute to make it. Assume a 50 by 50 square, you enter by the third 5' space from the left (i.e., 15' from the west wall), and the enemies are spaced around the middle of the square.]

Also don't forget, you were in a 6 foot wide alley. Please take actions accordingly, as you would have been single file, except Juli, who went ahead

Vedik remains in the air, waiting for Tratain's instructions. He judges the scene, sensing a trap. "It makes no sense for innocents to be here, if they are truly as they appear, they could be working for one of the opposing powers in the city. Or they could be shape shifted, to lure us close."

He takes another look around while waiting.

Jova funmbles through his pack looking for the invisisbility wand. Where did he place it. It was evidently harder to look for something while wading in the stream of blood. The sight did not bother hin it was the smell.

"Tratain, I seem to have misp[laced the wand, apologies." The only wand he does find is that of the mirror image. So taking that out he continues down the passage, wand in each hand.

At the sound of the fired crossbow, Jova recognizes the twang, Juliander. Jova snaps the mirror image wand forward and taps the liontaur on the rump. Thisd should give the enemy a bit to think about, hehe. He actually laughsd to hinself.

Round 1 Results
Monday October 29th, 2007 7:55:13 PM

[I put people closest to where it seemed they wanted.]

As the group reaches the small courtyard, no time is wasted in confronting the torturous beasts.

Vedik floats in the air, assessing the situation and waiting for an opportunity to strike.

Tratain steps forward and raises his holy symbol, calling upon Domi's might to strike fear into the hearts of the enemy. The monster closest to you immediately becomes stricken with panic, looking for the fastest way to retreat from the Protector.

Angered by the scene before him, Juliander fires off a bolt at one of the enemies. Unfortunately, Juli stumbles on a loose flagstone just as he fires, and the shot goes just wide of its head. [choose your position on the map. Being invisible, you could be anywhere reasonably near the entrance]

Arien recognizes the Cornugons for what they are. Seeing that the group's disguise will not likely be effective once the attack begins, he calls out the enemies' weaknesses to his friends. [everyone can read the spoiler above]

Jova, meanwhile, hears the sounds of combat close by, and reacts by tapping Lumi with his wand. Suddenly, liontaurs fil Jova's field of vision, a welcome sight in any battle ground.

Lumi squeezes past Monthor, and as he departs the narrow alley, seven more of him spread out to nearly envelop the enemies.

Draax steps forward to guard Arien against potential attack. Monthor moves in and prepares an assault alongside Lumi. Both activate their protective tattoos.

Horvis, like Vedik, is flying above, ready to attack. [specify your place, Horvis and Vedik can be anywhere reasonable, above the alley or above the rooftops.]

. . . [round 2 coming]

Monday October 29th, 2007 8:54:11 PM

As the group enters the courtyard, the Cornugons turn and look upon what they think are some of their evil allies. One of them calls out in a guttural tongue, raising its hand in greeting and pointing to the woman hanging by her ankles.

As it does so, its companion begins to run in fear, at the same time a crossbow bolt appears as if from nowhere and wings by one of the devils' heads. Seeing that the newcomers must be enemies, the Cornugons waste no more time in conversation.

E4 begins fleeing to the east, heedless of other danger aside from Tratain. It takes to the air and wings its way toward another alley.

E1 waves its spiked chain in a circular motion, striking out at the liontaurs threatening it. It hits as follows:

against Lumi image 5, AC 32
against Lumi image 4, AC 27
against Lumi image 3, AC 21

It then lashes out with its tail, hitting Lumi image 2 at AC 31, and bites at Lumi image 1, hitting AC 26.

[note: no damage rolled, as any damage destroys the image. I believe all hit, since the image AC is 10+size+dex, so 16]

E3 raises his chain at the same time, swinging it around and attempting to bite into the closest Lumi-images.

It hits image 6 at AC 28
It hits image 7 at AC 21

E5 moves to the southeast, and, chanting in its guttural tongue, raises its fingertips and releases a blinding arc of lightning at Tratain, Monthor and Lumi.

The bolt shoots forth, striking the three heros and continuing into the wall behind Lumi. The Cornugon laughs evilly as the trio is hit by the white-hot light.

The bolt does 45 damage, reflex 19 for half.

E2 continues poking at the woman's body and laughing as the fight ensues.

1. Lightning is capped at 10d6. Sorry, I didn't bother reading the whole description. So taking the first ten dice rolled, the damage was 29 (ref for 15).

2. Mirror image is personal, and couldn't be cast on Lumi. I'm not redoing the entire turn, since it was my carelessness that let it through, but for future reference, personal only.

Jova, finding the entire situation quite humorous, raises his hands and lets forth another blast of arcanity, causing long, dark, slimy tentacles to rise from the ground around three of the devils. [will roll checks on enemy turn]

Vedik calls out some sage advice to his new friends, then floats downward to provide a bit of healing to his fellow dwarf. [i put you diagonal for ease on the map, but you are above monthor]

Lumi steps forward to attack one of the devils. [it is 15' from you, and I think you said you have 5' reach. So, you have to deal with the tentacles as well. Please modify your action according to the grapple result]

As Lumi wades into the fray, the Cornugon spies him and swings its enormous chain around and around, whipping it out at Lumi's head. It hits AC 34 for 23 damage.

Lumi must make a fortitude save, DC 27, or be stunned for 2 rounds.

If Lumi makes the save and gets past the tentacles, he must make a will save, DC 23. Failure means Lumi now runs and cowers in the corner where he started. Passing means Lumi is shaken for 1 round [-2 attack, saves, skill checks, ability checks]

Stepping into the tentacles, Lumi immediately feels the slithering arms attempting to wrap around his legs. Raising his two-handed sword, he swings it across the chest of the Cornugon. A few of the tentacles slapping at his side distract him, though, and his attacks all miss their mark. [-2 on attacks decrease those rolls]

Tratain moves to a more strategic position and once again raises his holy symbol, chanting loudly and waving DOmi's emblem above his head. The E1 devil suddenly looks around as if panicked, refusing even to look in Tratain's direction.

Monthor shouts a battle cry and runs forward to attack the enemy Lumi and Tratain have targeted. [Monthor must modify his action according to grapple results as well.]

As Monthor approaches the Cornugon, he too must make a will save, DC 23. Failure means he runs to the corner and cowers for 2 rounds. Passing means he is shaken [-2 to attack, save, skill, etc.]

Rushing forward, he raises his axe above his head and brings it down in a mighty blow. Unfortunately, one of the tentacles gets in the way at the last second, and the axe goes just wide of the devil's leathery wing.

[Guys, this isn't the time to miss posts]

Grapple checks, 30, 33, 44. [if using the non-rolling rule, all checks would be well over 21 as well]

As the tentacles rise, the Cornugons laugh as they swipe the flimsy black arms away. It seems that only the Knights will be hampered this day.

E3 calls out an order in its guttural tongue, and points in the direction of the Knights still in the alley. E2 straightens, looks in that direction, and raises its hands, waving his arms and chanting.

E1 flies upward, and turns east, speeding away in the same direction as E4 went. If Lumi and Monthor are not stunned or cowering, they can make AoOs.

E3 then focuses its attention on the two warriors nearby. It's spiked chain flies out, speeding in Lumi's direction. [or, if Lumi is cowered, Monthor's direction]

It hits AC 42, 29, 34, for 27, 26, and 22 damage respectively.

Lumi (or Monthor) must make fortitude saves vs DC 27 for each that hits. Failure means he is stunned for 1 round, if not already stunned.

E3 then lashes out at Monthor with its mouth and tail. Its long tail snaps out, hitting AC 39 for 13 damage, and its jaws clamp down on Monthor's arm for an additional 12 damage.

As the devil's tail cuts into Monthor's chest, the wound briefly flames, then starts to pulse with a faint reddish glow.

Monthor Highlight to display spoiler: { You will lose 2 HP every 6 seconds until something is done about that wound.}

Heal check DC 20Highlight to display spoiler: {Something is wrong with Monthor's wound. There is more than natural damage present.}

Knowledge (planes) DC 25 Highlight to display spoiler: {The Cornugon inflicted an Infernal Wound on Monthor. You know everything about such wounds as is listed in the monster's MM entry (and should probably tell someone that information)}

E5, still laughing hoarsely, takes a few steps forward. Jova , Tratain and Vedik must make will saves, DC 23, or run in fear.

Looking down the alley, the devil raises an arm and calls out a few words. [cast defensive check = 38]

Suddenly, a burst of fire erupts just behind Arien, quickly filling the alley with burning, red-hot flames, engulfing Arien, Draax, Vedik and Jova.

Those 4 must make reflex saves, DC 19. Failure means 40 damage, half if you save.

Listen check DC 30 Highlight to display spoiler: {some of the bangs and rumbles around you aren't coming from this fight. Judging by a thumping noise that seems to be growing louder, you think someone, or something, is approaching.}

Arien manages to find some cover in the alley way against the blast of flame and takes only half damage (Ref 23). Arien quickly unleashes a blast of electricity in response to the attack at the closed of the devils (E5 SR 35, Chain Lightning Damage 55, Ref DC 25 Half); the electricity jumps from the Horned Devil to the two others in the clearing but fails to effect one of the creatures (E3 SR 27 does not beat SR; E2 SR 35, 27 damage, Ref DC 25 half).

Wednesday October 31st, 2007 12:15:43 AM

Still flying and invisible, Juliander begins to sing nonetheless, attempting to inspire his allies to success. An elven dirge echoes from his lips, as he prepares to fire upon the enemy.

OOC: Juliander occupies an adjacent square, kitty-corner (up and left) to Tratain, but about 10 feet in the air.

Draax moves close enough to the wall to only receive some of the fire damage ( save 30).

He taps Jova on the shoulder and signals for the man to take a defensive step back so Draax can move into that spot.

Taking a step toward E5, Draax attacks the creature with his holy sword. He concentrate on adding a little more defense against the creature (dodge).

As the devil approaches Jova's giggling gets more erratic. Just barely holding in his bowels, Jova lets out a screech, and scrambles to get out of thedevils way. The nearest path is blocked by Draax and Arien. He does his best to flee the battlefield.

As he is doing so, the area erupts in flame. As usual Jova is caught totally in the blast, taking severe fire damage as he claws his way out of the devils sight.

Vedik sighs as he watches any chance of a tactical fight fall into utter chaos. He feels the dread wash over him as the creature steps close, but does not allow himself to succumb to the fear. His wits about him, he manages to dodge most of the fireballs blast from his vantage point in the air.

Knowing that Tratain will likely need to turn again this round, he flies five feet north west around the devil and casts Mass Cure Serious Wounds, protecting himself while he casts.

DM, posting report
Wednesday October 31st, 2007 8:47:45 PM

We're not doing so well guys. Me included.

Let's all try to get regular posts going. If I miss a day, I apologize, but assuming I post, please be sure to post as well, especially in a fight like this. It seems like we're only getting 1/2 to 2/3, which is going to start being a problem in about 15 minutes when I post the next turn.

Round 4 Results  d20+16=23 d20+16=17 d20+16=34 d4=4
Wednesday October 31st, 2007 9:12:37 PM

Arien manages to escape some of the fiery blast, and counters with an electrical assault of his own. Bolts fly from his hands, striking the closest devil, then jumping to 2 others. E5 and E2 sizzle from the blasts, neither being quick enough to escape (ignore third roll, both saves failed).

As the lightning hits E2, the devil suddenly winks out of existence, leaving a faint glowing vapor behind it, somewhat like the false Lumi's that recently crowded the battlefield.

At the same moment, a song erupts as if from everywhere and nowhere. Not able to see your comrade, you all nonetheles are reassured by the strong, confidant voice of your friend booming out encouragement.

Draax steps forward in front of his comrade and launches a brutal frontal assault on the devil. His first strike lands a solid blow, ripping a long gash down the COrnugon's chest. The devil howls in pain, although a small portion of the deep cut seems to fade immediately.

Draax's second two swipes go just wide of the enemy.

Draax must make a will save, DC 23, or run in fear for 4 rounds.

Jova, hit full in the face by the burning flames, suddenly and inexplicably becomes terribly afraid of the looming devil, and decides that discretion - or possibly panic - is the better part of valor. He immediately abandons the field and runs south down the alley, slip-sliding on the blood as he bolts away.

Vedik manages to keep his wits, while avoiding much of the fire as well. He flies a bit north and raises his own holy symbol. Some of you feel the refreshing wash of healing come over you, envigorating you for what still lies ahead.

Lumi wades through the tentacles, ignoring their slimy pull, but is struck in the face by the long, wicked chain, and stops dead in his tracks, wobbling as he attempts to regain his footing. (correct, next round is a go)

Once again, Tratain's holy symbol shines as a bastion of hope, as he presses it directly into the face of the hapless COrnugon. SPeaking a few words of power and command, he orders the devil away, and it immediately cowers in front of the Protector.

Monthor decides that enough is enough. Ignoring the burning, pulsing wound in his arm, he steps forward and confronts the nearest COrnugon. [make a will save, DC 23, or be forced to run in fear]

He hefts his waraxe and brings it to bear, slicing once, twice, thrice into the devil's hide, nearly severing one of its wings!

As he watches, the wounds he inflicts seem to heal over just a bit, and the flaming bursts from his axe seem to drift away, doing no harm.

As the battle heats up, the phantom fog thickens around your heads. Vedik and Horvis are nearly covered in it. Long, snaky tendrils drift downward, licking at Lumi's head and back, as it beckoning him into their embrace. Small, errant clouds float between and around MOnthor and his opponent, and wisps of smoke drift through the alley among the heroes there.

As Tratain presses his symbol into the devil, it sears a mark on its leathery arm. Howling in anguish and fear, the beast runs in utter terror for the eastern passage.

Tratain, Vedik and Draax may take attacks of opportunity if they wish.

E3 looks around for a moment, and finds himself alone among the Knights. It calls out in its grating voice, "karta-she bo veker, kon brelata ghar!"

Speak Infernal Highlight to display spoiler: {"If I must die, so shall one of you!"}

It howls in rage and swings its massive chain, whipping it down upon Monthor. It hits AC 40, 23 (added too many into the roll), and 24.

The first swipe of the chain catches Monthor solidly on the head, causing 22 damage.

Monthor must make a fort save, DC 27, or be stunned for 4 rounds.

Seeing that its chain didn't finish the job as planned, the Cornugon lashes out with its tail, and somehow manages to snap at Monthor with its monstrous jaws at the same time.

It's bite hits AC 37 for 14 damage.

Its tail hits AC 40 for 17 damage.

Monthor Highlight to display spoiler: {The tail inflicts another wound as before. there are now 2 wounds doing 2hp/round each damage until somehow fixed}

The Cornugon laughs in delite, looking around at the heros as if challenging anyone to come forward and die.

thump . . .

thump . . .

thump . . .

The Cornugon's laughter stops abruptly and a look of fear comes over its face.

As the new-heard noise is heard, it begins to wail in fear and dismay. Now audible above all other noise, the steady beat calls your attention to the east.

THe alleyway appears darker than it was a moment ago . . . almost unnaturally dark . . .

Then a dark red, scaly foot steps from the darkness, followed by an impossibly thick leg. The pointed bottoms of a pair of leathery red wings issue forth, and open slightly to reveal a 10 foot tall form.

The thing walks forward on two feet, but is covered in what almost appears to be a dragon's scales. It's wings envelop its overly muscled body, and it suddenly screams out in a loud, bass voice.

It's face is more fang and horn than anything else. Two points of black fire must be its eyes, although the foot-long, yellowed fangs are far more prominent.

The darkness seems to follow the beast, clinging to it as a protective blanket.

Then you see what was making the noise: the monster is dragging behind it a near-dead COrnugon, recognizable as one of those Tratain previously caused to run in fear. The Cornugon is banging its tail on the ground as it writhes to escape.

As the new enemy steps forward, it gives a single [i]twist[i] of its arm, and a loud crack is heard. The Cornugon gives one last thrash, and falls dead at the monster's feat.

Knowledge (planes) DC 28 Highlight to display spoiler: { It is a Pit Fiend}

Horvis, I'm sorry I missed your post. There were a few private posts around it that caused me to overlook it.

The griffon completes the summoning spell right after the new adversary arrives in the square. Horvis knows nothing of what this thing is, but concludes that several dire bears might be useful in the combat. He succeeds beyond what he hoped, calling three dire bears to assist him.

Horvis places the three bears around the remaining cornugon, including opposite Monthor. The bears immediately attack the devil.

Bear 1 - (flanking applies)
Claw 1 - misses AC 26
Claw 2 - misses AC 25
Bite - misses AC 32

Claw 2 - misses AC 28

Bear 3 - (flanking applies)
Claw 1 - hits AC 29 (no DEX bonus), 15 damage
Claw 2 - hits AC 34, 20 damage
Bite - hits AC 29, 16 damage

Horvis calls down to this companions, "It killed one of the devils! Maybe we can bargain with it!"

Not really believing his words, Horvis then flies towards the new arrival, staying above the buildings where he is protected from any attacks. He lands just south of the alley it entered by and then shifts into the form of a dire bear.

Monthor takes a severe pounding from the Cornugon until the wall seperates the two. The appearance of the dire bears is a welcomed sight. Hearing Tratain's orders, Monthor turns and runs towards the alley way. Arriving at the mouth, he waits until all of the others go through, steps in and the activates a Quaal's feather token (tree, 5-foot diameter trunk, 60-foot height,40-foot top diameter)at the mouth of the alley (the 5 foot square in front of it), effectively blocking it.

Frantic to get away from the fiend, Juliander flies down the alley after his friends, "Um... which wand was that again." The bard stows his crossbow, and starts pulling wands out as he flies.

The End?  d20+13=15
Friday November 2nd, 2007 12:02:36 AM

Horvis finishes his chant, and of a sudden, three dire bears appear and immediately begin laying into the surviving Cornugon. THe first latches on to the devil and pulls it down, and the others jump on to begin mauling. The Cornugon howls in pain as it falls to the ground, thrashing and writhing among a pile of over large bears.

Just as the bears pull it down, the pit fiend steps forward, only to find a large, solid stone wall blocking its path. It bellows in anger, and you hear a loud pound on the wall, which shudders under the pressure, but manages to maintain integrity (str check 15).

"DEVIL'S CORNER IS NOT FINISHED WITH YOU, MORTALS!" a voice bellows from beyond the wall.

The last sight you see as you flee down the alley is a blast of fire above the wall, the yelps of a trio of bears following behind you.

The Knights run as fast as they can, slipping and sliding among the blood splattered through the alley. After a few moments, you emerge from the alley and find yourselves running again along the street you previously left.

Halfway down the block, as you begin slowing to a jog, a voice calls out in an almost-whisper, "Fools! Never follow the blood when the devils are feeding! Come! Hide inside until their ire is passed!"

Looking around, you behold a short, bent form in a long, dark, tattered robe. The man (you assume it is a man from the voice, at least), is partly hiding behind the doorway of a tumbledown house, beckoning you over with one hand while leaning on a gnarled wooden stick with the other.

"Be wary" he calls, "I doubt we'll find friends here." He then enters the building shield and mace at the ready.

Once inside, if nothing has accosted him, he questions the hooded figure.

"Who are you, that does not fear a large group of travelers in such a place?" he states plainly.

[all fears, shakens, etc. are ended by the way, everyone is fine status-wise]

Upon seeing the hooded figure, the group immediately stops and moves quickly into the building. The entry is somewhat narrow, but Horvis could conceivably fit if he squeezed enough.

Vedik leads the way, walking into the ramshackle house, followed by most of his companions.

As the group enters, you behold a large, mostly empty room. A few broken pieces of furniture lay rotting on the floor. There is a set of stairs on the far wall, leading up to a balcony that encircles the entire room. There are no other doors or windows in the room, and it is quite dim, with only the small amount of light from the doorway for illumination.

Tratain takes out his wand and prepares to dispense much-needed healing, but is interrupted by the sound of deep, ominous laughter.

"Fools indeed!" a voice booms from behind you. "So easily taken by my wiles are you!" The man's hood falls back to reveal a quite youthful face. Jet black hair falls to his shoulders, and he pulls himself erect, no longer slouching like an old man.

THrowing the wooden staff to the floor, he laughs again, and disappears from sight.

At the same time, Vedik sees a large, blue-green cube take shape around him. Walls, floor and ceiling box the dwarf in the semi-translucent cage. A shape materializes inside the box, directly in front of Vedik.

The form is man-shaped, but nearly 9 feet tall. The thing seems to be made almost entirely of metal, with cords and wires running along its legs and arms at the joints. Small, fashioned pieces of wood ornament its body, and plates of bronze and steel provide protection for its chest, shoulders and legs.

Its arms end in oversized metal fists, just perfect for squashing and smashing. It's head looks like a plain metal helm, though its eyes glow brightly.

Horvis, unable to squeeze inside, blocks the entry against further intruders while his friends deal with the threat inside.

Tratain barks out directions, then quickly withdraws a scroll from a pocket and doles out mass quantities of much-needed healing to his companions. He strives to hear the mage's location, but cannot, although to his eye, it does not appear that there are any other threats in the vicinity.

Vedik spares a moment for some choice words, then backs himself into a corner of the cube, prepared to defend himself against any attacks.

Jova looks around, and with his ability to see invisible foes, has no problem watching the mage's every move. Jova weaves his magic and casts a spell at the mage, attempting to turn his very flesh into useless rock. Jova can see the weave hit the enemy full force, though it seems to evaporate around the mage with no effect (SR failed).

Draax prepares himself to attack the invisible foe, but try as he might, does not think the enemy has come anywhere close to him.

Arien, immediately recognizing the forcecage and its weaknesses, casts another spell. The shimmering walls of the cage disappear in an instant, leaving Vedik and the metal monster in the open room.

Lumi, standing next to the evaporating cage, also prepares to defend himself against attacks.

Monthor is unable to see the mage, and no one can accurately point the enemy out, so the dwarf instead attacks Vedik's opponent. Raising his axe, Monthor makes one, two, three mighty swipes, removing both of the construct's arms before chopping off its metallic head. The constuct falls to the floor in a lifeless heap, clanging and banging as it tumbles.

Juliander, standing inside the door, casts a spell on himself to allow him to see the mage. He sees the information in Jova's spoiler above.

Grunting to no one in particular, he grows tired of this invisible mages game. Unfortunately, the deafness interferes with his casting, and he fails the incant.

Cursing in the silence, he takes to the air, flying up to the ceiling.

Round 2 Results
Tuesday November 6th, 2007 9:40:28 PM

Monthor's axe clangs on the floor as his hands fly to his bleeding ears, even as another insult passes his lips, unheard by his companions.

Draax manages to avoid the stunning effect, and runs to the other side of the room, swinging wildly in the hopes of connecting with the mage, but again failing to do so.

Jova, too, becomes stunned by the spell. He attempts to motion for his companions, but is unable to force his body to react this round.

Vedik shrugs off some of the spell's effects, and takes flight, soaring to the ceiling almost 40' in the air.

Arien succumbs to the spell's stunning effect, wobbling where he stands in a vain attempt to act. [no spell or movement this turn, you failed the fort, so you are stunned for 1 round]

Lumi's body tenses momentarily, then his head sags as he, too, becomes stunned by the shout.

Lumi Highlight to display spoiler: {Make the second will save next post, DC 25, and give yourself a +2 bonus since the order would be drastically against your nature. If you pass, dominate ends. If you fail, attack as the mage ordered.}

Juliander joins his companions in teetering helplessly in place, unable to force his body or mind into action.

Tratain ignores the stunning effect and casts a spell on himself, allowing him to see the mage. [please read any spoilers above for those who can see invisibility]. He moves to the middle of the room and surveys the area. [no listen check possible, you are still deafened]

Monthor, Jova, Arien, Lumi, and Juliander are stunned and cannot act this round.

As most of you stand reeling from the onslought, a white-hot bolt of lightning suddenly shoots forth from the northeast corner of the room, coming from about 30 feet in the air.

The bolt flies downward, striking Tratain square in the chest. Even as it drills into Tratain, six smaller bolts arc out from the Protector's body, driving flaming points of jagged light into Monthor, Draax, Jova, Juli, Arien and Horvis.

Tratain make a Reflex save, DC 20. Failure, take 64 electrical damage. Pass, take 32 electrical damage.

All others mentioned (Lumi and Vedik are not targeted), make a Reflex save, DC 20. Failure, take 32 electrical damage. Pass, take 16 electrical damage.

Anyone with see invisibility/true sight Highlight to display spoiler: { You see the mage flying 30' above B8 when he casts the spell. Knowing a spell Arien casts quite often, no spellcraft is needed to realize this is a chain lightning spell. After casting, the mage flaps his leathery black wings and glides over to float above B2, smiling wickedly and flashing quite the rude gesture in Tratain's direction. The look on his face seems to indicate that he doesn't even know he is visible to some at this point. Again, do not forget you are deafened, and cannot convey information via speech to your friends.}

No spellcraft check is needed. You all immediately recognize one of Arien's favored spells: chain lightning.

The dire bear manages to avoid most of the electrical bolt that arced towards him. Horvis knows that the enemy caster is somewhere inside the room, moving invisibly bu leaving a distinctive odour. From where the Chain Lightning spell originated, Horvis also knows that the mage is flying above his companions.

The shifter concentrates briefly, changing back into a griffon and healing some of the damage caused by the mage's spells. Horvis squeezes through the doorway and then takes to the air, flying into the centre of the room.

Wednesday November 7th, 2007 8:16:40 PM

Horvis escapes most of the crackling lightning, and decides to take immediate action. He transforms himself into a griffin and takes flight, moving to the center of the room.

He breaths deeply, but does not catch any scents other than his companions and the wizard. Horvis Highlight to display spoiler: {You smell the wizard off to your left, 15-20 feet away and close to level with you. Does scent let you pinpoint exact squares? If so, I'll modify your information}

Arien stumbles from the lightning, but refuses to give in to the pain. Focusing his anger, he raises a hand and lets out a small, red bead of fire. The tiny ball streaks to the upper corner of the room where the lightning emanated and explodes into a giant, fiery mass.

Horvis, just having flown nearby, must make the saves specified in Arien's post or take the damage [if you were firing into the air where the lightning came from, there's no place to locate the fireball without hitting Horvis. If you were aiming at ground level, it would likely hit Draax instead]

Draax drops his blade and whips out his bow, knocking an arrow and preparing to fire. [are you readying an action to shoot on specific circumstances, or just taking the bow out?]

Monthor comes back to reality and removes a small token from his pack. With a smile on his lips, he tosses the token into the corner, and an enormous tree springs forth, shooting upward at an alarming rate. The ceiling of the room crumbles as the tree bursts through it, pouring rubble onto Horvis as he flies about the room.

Even as Monthor retrieves the feather token, Lumi inexplicably takes a swing at the dwarf with his massive sword! Luckily for Monthor, the swipe goes wide.

Jova recovers from the stunning effect and escapes much of the lighting bolt that coursed through his body. He looks around the room to locate the wizard. Jova Highlight to display spoiler: { You see him in B2. No need for a spot if the "see invis" in your post name is still active}

Juliander decides to end his spellcasting, and lets forth a volley of bolts at the wizard. He watches all three strike home, bloodying the invisible mages bare chest.

Juliander, what type of crossbow/bolts are you using? Don't have your CS with me. Specifically, aside from the holy damage, what type damage is the rest?

Lumi presses his unforeseen attack on Monthor, taking swing after swing at his ally. Two of the attacks strike home, causing Monthor 20 damage.

[Lumi wasn't designated as a dodge target so it can't apply there, but if you designate him now, it will apply from here on out]

Lumi Highlight to display spoiler: {You do not receive further instructions, and so you continue your attack. If the mage dies, the domination ends.}

Everyone, sense motive check, DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Lumi's behavior is obviously quite odd! Based on what you have seen of the taur in the past, you guess that his behavior is being influenced by some sort of enchantment}

Tratain, watching the invisible mage, raises his holy symbol in the enemy's direction and utters a single word, unheard by any of the Knights.

All who can see invisible or have true seeing Highlight to display spoiler: { The mage, flapping his black wings near the upper corner of the room, suddenly goes rigid and plummets to the ground, laying motionless on the floor. His eyes dart about at you, and his muscles tense repeatedly, but he does not appear able to move.}

Vedik sees Lumi attack Monthor, and quickly guesses at the reason behind the taur's actions. He mumbles a few words, hoping he gets them right in his deafened state. His attempt is a success, and a glowing, purple, circular glyph appears around the flying dwarf. Vedik then floats downward, almost straddling Lumi's broad back, and enveloping the liontaur in the protective warding.

Lumi Highlight to display spoiler: { The domination link is temporarily broken. Note: the domination has NOT ended, and if by some chance the mage survives until Vedik's magic circle goes away from you, the command will take affect again. Though I don't see that happening...}

OOC: Tratain, you were correct, the lightning save should have been 25. That was my oversight, so the stated save stands as-is, no need to change your results.

DM Addendum
Wednesday November 7th, 2007 11:07:48 PM

Tratain Highlight to display spoiler: {I must apologize. I neglected part of the true seeing description and forgot to mention something you saw a round or two ago. There appears to be a secret door on the balcony, located at D1. It is a square in the wall glowing faintly.

Nothing has come in or gone out, the door hasn't moved, and the mage hasn't gone near it in any way, so I don't think it would have changed anything, but I just realized true seeing would have caught it. Very sorry about that.

Using his many shot skill, Draax holds 4 knoched arrows in his bow waiting for some sign of the invisible mage. His eyes are drawn to a small dust cloud on the floor and Draax then notices Tratain cutting down and gesturing to the same spot. The spot is confirmed when Horvis the griffon swoops down and begins attacking the invisible mage. Seeing that others are in melee with the mage, Draax holds his shot to see if they kill the mage, but if he see any indication that prone mage is attempting to move away from the others, Draax will use the movement and line-of-sight of the others to attempt a shot at mage.

Much-Needed Break
Friday November 9th, 2007 7:30:26 AM

Tratain heads to the mage's side and brings his mace down hard, attempting to crush the man's head. Horvis, seeing the activity, does a nose dive and begins thrashing away at the unseen enemy. Draax, watching as well, unleashes a volley of arrows, each of which seem to stop in mid-air, circles of reddish liquid forming around them even as they float. Juliander has a similar experience, watching a number of crossbow bolts freeze in mid-air as they connect with the invisible wizard.

The mage lets out a final scream, then slumps lifelessly to the floor. His body reappears as he dies, and the Knights behold a broken and bloodied corpse, mostly of a man, but with a pair of large, bat-like wings sprouting from its back.

Meanwhile, Vedik attempts to communicate with Lumi. THe liontaur stares at the dwarf as if not even seeing him, but as the mage passes his final breath, Lumi's eyes seem to snap back into focus, and he looks around as if seeing his friends for the first time.

Jova returns a few wands to their storage places and roots around his bag for a wand of healing, while Monthor prepares to defend himself against his brother-in-arms.

Tratain, Juliander and Arien can look around to see that there are no immediate threats in area. A quiet peace pervades the room, as if this horrible city were giving you a few moments of respite.

- it has been 3 rounds since the deafening, so anyone who passed the save has 5 rounds to go.

- hero points:
1. Tratain gets a hero point for quick thinking and directions over the two combats, as well as his superb turning against the devils, which seem to have partially saved the day.
2. Vedik gets a hero point for his quick-thinking in combat; first for stopping the pit fiend with a wall of stone (which, I'll admit, caused me no end of irritation), and second for helping Lumi in a pretty ingenious manner.

Lumi lays his blade down and attempts to voice a heartfelt apology to Monthor, although he cannot even be sure if the dwarf can yet hear him.

Those searching the mage's body find nothing of interest. He was wearing a tattered cloth robe, pulled down to his waist and exposing his bare chest, and no other clothing. There doesn't appear to be anything of interest on his body.

Horvis glides to the tree and keeps an eye out for more trouble. From his vantage point, he has a good view of the nearby city, although the ever-present fog obstructs vision beyond the closest few buildings.

A few brief moments go by, long enough for some of the Knights to get their hearing back (anyone who made their save can now hear again, others still have a few rounds to go).

Horvis Highlight to display spoiler: {Suddenly, you behold a very unexpected sight. There is a small opening in the western portion of the building that looks to be about 10 feet past the west wall of the room below. From out of that hole flies a man-shaped body with black, leathery wings. The man doesn't even notice you sitting in the tree, as he flies upward, then streaks south as fast as his wings will carry him. Under one arm he carries a thick, heavily bound tome.

What makes the sight so strange is the feeling of familiarity upon seeing the man. You just watched the mage die, and in fact took part in his final moments, but for all the world, you would swear that the mage is now flying away from the building. A peek below confirms that his body still lays crumpled on the ground.

The Wizard's House
Monday November 12th, 2007 8:16:45 PM

As everyone's hearing slowly returns, Tratain doles out healing wherever needed. [for simplicity, let's just assume all deafness wore off and all healing posted is complete as of the time Horvis flies off]

While the Knights recover from two back-to-back ordeals, Horvis the griffon suddenly streaks off into the fog, squaking some sort of warning before he flies.

Horvis Highlight to display spoiler: { You easily overtake the mage in a matter of seconds. He is so intent on flying away that he doesn't see you coming until it is far too late. COming in from behind and a little above, you land on his back, pinning his wings down and putting him at your mercy.

Almost as fast as you caught him, your claws and beak tear through his wings, his back, and his neck. Within a few heartbeats, he hangs lifelessly from your talons, probably not even knowing what killed him.

You fly back to the house, and swoop in through the broken roof.
}

After only a moment, Horvis flies down into the house again and drops a limp body onto the floor in the middle of the Knights. Oddly enough, it is the body of the mage himself, though much mangled and broken from Horvis' attack.

Looking at the two bodies, you can easily confirm that they are one and the same, or at least twins.

What unearthly work is it that causes this phenomenon?

Spellcraft DC 34, arcane casters only Highlight to display spoiler: {You carefully examine the two bodies and notice the slightest of imperfections in the second one. A somewhat different magical aura encompasses the second body as well. If you had to venture a guess, you would say that the mage must have created a clone through magical means, in order for his spirit to enter if his original body were somehow killed.}

Unlike the first body, however, the second mage was carrying a large, vellum-bound tome when Horvis ambushed him. Secured by a small silver lock, the oversized book fell to the mage's side on the floor when Horvis dropped the body, and sits there now.

Tratain suggests that the group inspect the secret door he noticed on the balcony above.

Arien casts Detect Magic and studies the book for a moment to see if it has any magical auras and what auras those might be. If he feels it is safe the mage will then stow the book in his haversack.

Secret Door  10d6(2+5+2+2+3+2+4+5+5+6)=36
Wednesday November 14th, 2007 5:35:17 PM

A few of the Knights search the second body while others stand guard.

You find nothing on the body, and it appears that the book is the only thing the mage was carrying.

Arien examines the book with magically enhanced eyes, and finds that a number of magical auras are emanating from it, or more accurately, the residues of various auras. It does not appear that there are any spells or other magical dangers surrounding the book, and Arien is able to transfer it to his pack for later examination.

With his companions standing watch, Tratain examines the magically hidden door. With his true seeing, it appeasr to be a quite simple stone door. Instead of a knob or latch, a single brick sticks out farther than the rest. Pushing it, Tratain causes the door to swing open on a hinge and steps into the room without worry for his well-being.

As he does so, a bright flash of light suddenly flares up around the door. A bolt of white-hot electricity shoots from the mantle of the door, striking Tratain in the back of his shoulders.

Tratain, make a reflex save, DC 14. Failure, take 36 damage. Success, take 18.

Once the smoke clears from the brief lightning strike, you see a small room, about 20 feet to a side. Along two of the walls are long tables piled high with alchemical equipment: beakers, glass tubes, plates and bowls with various odd and assorted powders fill the tables.

Along the far wall is some sort of bed. Long and narrow, the pallet is lined with dark velvet. A long glass cover once sat along its length, just large enough for an average-sized man or woman to lay inside, though it has been pushed to the floor and broken into numerous pieces.

A small bookshelf stands next to the odd bed. It is filled with musty, mold-ridden books, except for one wide space, where it appears a book has been removed from the shelf.

There is a small opening in the roof, about 4 by 4 feet, that looks out to the open sky above.

The griffon watches as his companions investigate the room beyond the door. Horvis wonders what else they might find, or learn from this place.

"What time is it? Do we find a place to fortify and rest, or keep going?"

"I'd suggest using one of my spells to learn the best, most direct path to our target. No stopping, no distractions, no rescues ... in and out, make it quick."

"If we do want to rest and fortify someplace, I guess this place is as good as any. The hidden door will help, but we will need to cover the hole in the roof with something and probably set up a few traps and/or alarms of our own."

He waits to see what the group decides.

I just wonder what would keep them all here, if not the riches? I dont't know. Is it we just havent stumbled on the wealth yet?

"Do we stay and rest up? I figure we ought to keep going. We have no idea how this place will react to darkness.

"In any case we should talk about the how we are fgoing to proceed. I know I have made mistakes in these battles that have hurt us as a group. We ought to figure something out, there are enough surprises out there, without more from within."

The ringing in his ears subsides and Lumi catches the final words of his companions.

"The lack of treasure is a clue, wunjo. I suspect that the creatures we have so far met are not strong enough to keep thier hoards. And I think the green mist keeps the greedy whether they have treasure or not."

Tratain says "if most want to rest we can, but Only if we can somehow block off the exit out the cieling, I'd rather not have something be able to sneak in on us from up there, we can close the secret door no problem. I'd also like one of you to cast your spell and see if you can get a general distance to our target, if we close I don't want to spend another minute in this city than we have too. I agree with Jova its really strange we've found nothing of value so far, that must mean that what we've fought have lost htier riches to something more powerfull."

Thursday November 15th, 2007 6:44:22 PM

"Rest or no, makes little difference to me. I agree with Tratain however. We should find a more secure location, or plug up that ceiling somehow. Any ideas?"

Rest or Press On
Thursday November 15th, 2007 7:23:50 PM

As the Knights investigate the room, there is discussion whether to rest and sleep, or push on toward the target.

[Tratain didn't make his reflex save or deal with the lightning trap yet.]

Vedik casts detect magic and scans the room. Other than faint, fading auras around some of the alchemical equipment on the tables, he sees nothing of interest.

Juliander gives Horvis a bit more strength as he taps the taur with a wand. Horvis, meanwhile, offers to use some of his magic to divine the path to the Knights' target.

Draax likes the idea of fortifying the position if rest is the option chosen. Arien offers to use his extradimensional arcane powers, though he also wonders at the risk of drawing more attention with such a large expenditure of magical force.

Monthor and Lumi are also in favor of resting, and want to plan for the battles still to come. Tratain and Juliander stress the need for protection and safety.

Tratain suggests that Horvis or Vedik first use their magical abilities to learn how far the Knights are from their goal.

On the Road Again
Monday November 19th, 2007 8:10:40 AM

After some discussion, Tratain makes the decision to push on toward the Knights' goal, hopeing to find the green tower before much longer.

Moving out of the building, the Knights take up their positions and head east down the rubble-strewn street, Horvis guiding by the faintly glowing golden line that only he can see.

You continue on some time, the thick fog rising and falling slowly around you. As you travel, the buildings around you become more and more dilapidated, and you find yourselves passing more piles of rock and rubble than intact structures.

After almost a half hour of walking, climbing, and skirting debris, you once again find yourselves facing a large blockage in the street. This time, instead of a toppled building, it appears the roadblock was intentionally made.

Large rocks and boulders have been piled high in the street, with dirt and mud packed into the crevices to form a rudimentary makeshift wall about 12 feet high and spanning the street from end to end.

Horvis looks down and sees that the golden path veers diagonally left (north) through the remains of a building, and onto a north-south street beyond the blockade. The structure, though, is less of a building than it is a trio of walls that happen to stand near each other, with the fourth of their number fallen long, long ago.

Tratain
Monday November 19th, 2007 4:50:24 PM

Upon seeing the Crude Wall Tratain stops his companions and attempts to find some building the group can Hide in or behind so that they can be unobserved by any watchers should there happen to be any near the wall.

When a suitable place is found he says "Juliander, I'd like you to use the invisibility wand on Vedik and Horvis. Vedik, since you can fly I'd like you to take a quick look and see what you can see from the Air, don't get too close though. Horvis, can you shift into something small that could Hide easily? If you can I'd like you to go have a look and see what you can see aswell. This looks like a built wall so someone is probably watching it a least, more likely there are guards. Searching
Tuesday November 20th, 2007 3:05:44 PM

The Knights stop near the blockage, and find that it would be relatively easy to hole up in the half-ruined house through which Horvis' golden path runs. While the house is in a state of destruction, the standing walls provide enough cover for the moment.

Tratain gives directions, and Juliander employs one of his magic wands.

Vedik is turned invisible and flies off to search the area. Meanwhile, Horvis shifts himself into a snake, miniscule compared to his prior forms, and slithers over the seemingly man-made structure.

Vedik and Horvis Highlight to display spoiler: {Vedik flying and Horvis slithering, you each head down the blocked-off street. It isn't necessary to go very far, as you find an interesting sight very close by (though hidden by the thick fog).

A small group of people huddles next to a wall with a fire burning in front of them. You see five of them, and a sixth walking a short distance away.

Of those sitting, one is adorned in thick plate armor, likely beautiful once, though now dulled from wear. His helm sits next to him, and you behold a haggard human face. Next to him sits a man in a leather jerkin, a longbow and quiver by his side. This one has more pointed ears, though not quite as elongated as Ariens. You would guess half-elf if you had to, although his face is covered with grime and his features are difficult to see from your distance. [I am assuming Vedik flies close enough to see but not to be heard, and Horvis slithers as close as he can without drawing attention on the ground.]

Two others wear nothing but long, dark robes, black on one and grey on the other. The black-robed figure is that of a frail, aged man, his hair mostly gone from his head. He bends over the fire, closer than the others, warming his hands and a small teacup.

The grey-robe looks to be a human woman, also frail, though a good bit younger than the man next to her. She is simultaneously trying to stay close to the fire, while as far as possible from the old man. Her face is one of sorrow and disgust.

Sitting a few feet off, playing with a long dagger, sits a short figure, most likely halfling or gnome. It never raises its head, and you cannot see any facial features.

Finally, pacing up and back, up and back, tracing a path parallel to the group, strides a lone dwarf in plate armor. He carries a large hammer, leant against his shoulder while he walks. In his other hand is a tall metal shield. Through the muck and grime you can see a golden eagle emblazoned on it. The dwarf walks strangely, almost stiffly, along its patrol.

Do a sense motive check, DC 15. If you succeed, read the second spoiler below.

At the other end of the block, you see another large blockade, similar to that next to the Knights, walling off that side of the street.
}

Vedik and Horvis second spoiler for skill check Highlight to display spoiler: {Given your recent exposure via Lumi's enchantment, you venture a guess that this dwarf is also enchanted, most likely dominated as was Lumi.}

Meanwhile, the Knights remain vigilant for any dangers. Lumi sends his owl out, and it immediately returns, quietly hooting in Lumi's ear to warn him of danger past the blockage.

Jova keeps a watch as well, but doesn't notice anything of importance.

Monthor and Draax wait with weapons at the ready in case the group is once again attacked out of the fog.

After their recon, Vedik and Horvis return to the group unharmed.

Horvis sees that his glowing path still leads northeast, then turns north after about 20 feet.

------------------------------
So it's clear since there's no map, you are at the northeast corner of a 4 way intersection, inside a ruined house. The blockade is blocking the east-west street, and it located on the eastern side of the intersection. Horvis' magic path leads through the house you are in, northeast a bit, then turns north just before the fog obscures it from view.

Vedik lands softly, and whispers quietly. "Six of em, humanoids. Human in heavy armor, half-elf archer in light armor, a man in a black robe, a woman in a grey robe, a cowled small one with a dagger, and dwarf on patrol in heavy armor with a shield and hammer. Somethings odd about the dwarf, I'd guess some sort of controlling magic. Dwarf has a golden eagle on his shield, anyone know what that might be?"

Vedik looks around at the group. "I know we could move past them easily enough, but I do not like the thought of a kinsman under someones sway. Now he may be an evil sort, I've no way of knowing. But its a good bet that the rest aren't goodly folk given where we are. I've still got some time on my magic circle. If he's controlled I can free his mind quick enough by getting close to him invisibly.

Vedik (continued)
Tuesday November 20th, 2007 6:23:56 PM

Vedik continues. "And if Tratain says we confront this group, lets take a moment to plan it before we act. I can cast silence on Horvis, an with him invisible overhead, we could approach. If their casters start to cast, he can swoop down and cut them off. I can do the same over the dwarf with the magic circle. If it comes to a fight, hit the casters hard and we should do fine.

Tratain
Tuesday November 20th, 2007 6:27:34 PM

Tratain Waits for Vedik and Horvis to return and thinks for a moment.

He says "The eagle could be from anywhere, I think one of the Mailed Fist Regiments uses it as a standard but I don't know anymore than they use animals to denote their different regiments and that I think one is an eagle. I couldn't identify it even if I saw it. It could also be the symbol of a house guard, a dwarf clan or someones army. I really don't know"

He continues "I don't like the idea of leaving him there either. It seems that surprise is on our side this time though, so lets take advantage of it. Horvis can you go back and watch them for a little while longer? Identify who has weapons and who doesn't. Try and see their group dynamic, if anyone seems to be in charge or if anyone else seems to be controlled. Take a look on the other side of those barriers if you can to see if anyone else is hidden behind them, these guys may just be bait. When we have more information we can plan our attack. Everyone else just sit tight here until he returns."

Regarding the golden eagle reported by Vedik, Knowledge (History) DC 30 Highlight to display spoiler: {You recall reading of the Golden Eagles. Many years ago, they were a small corps of paladins dedicated to ridding the land of extraplanar threats. Most of the group was killed after a series of pitched battles with some demons, and the few that remained spread out to fulfill their oaths however they could. You assume this dwarf was one of that group.}

Arien
Tuesday November 20th, 2007 8:42:21 PM

"Although I'd rather avoid a fight at this point, if we are certain that they are a group of evil adventurers a preemptive strike might just work. We are a bit low on resources for the day though so I think any decision to attack should be made carefully. Also realize that we still look like devils right now so that may give us an edge."

Juliander

"Little is what it seems in this ancient city", agrees Lumi, "but we must be true to our own natures of compassion, loyalty, and honor. I fear if we sway from our internal path, the mists may trap us as well." The white wemic is uncomfortable speaking philisophically among so many who are obviously more educated than he is, but he continues on. "What I'm saying is that we should help out 'cause that's who we are."

Suddenly Lumi grins. "And if we're wrong, we take action to corrrect that, too."

To Attack, or Not to Attack
Friday November 23rd, 2007 10:00:12 AM

Vedik and Horvis return with their report. Vedik expresses his concern over a fellow dwarf in trouble, and Monthor seconds the sentiment with a flourish of his axe. Draax, too, is ready to jump the possible enemies.

Arien cautions against running into a fight without proper planning, while Juliander jokingly complains of the Knights' predicament.

Jova warns against taking the situation at face value, thinking of recent instances of trickery in the city.

Lumi then speaks up, questioning whether the Knights can even consider leaving the supposedly endangered dwarf, without becoming as bad as the enemies they face.

Tratain decides to send Horvis back for another look, and gives the small snake some instruction on what to look for. At that, Horvis slithers away again, through the rubble heap and back onto the blocked-off street.

Horvis Highlight to display spoiler: { You make your way back down the street toward the mysterious party, coming to within 30-40 feet of them. From here, you watch as the party talks in low voices, a few of them looking around often as if expecting danger to appear at any moment.

The black-robed man puts his teacup away and takes out a small, dusty book. He flips through a few pages, then finds one he likes and begins reading in earnest, his lips moving faintly as he does so.

The woman in grey watches him for a moment, then gives her head a shake and turns her body so her back is to him, bringing her knees to her chest and wrapping her arms around them. She sits in silence, ocassionally grimacing or rolling her eyes at the conversation between the two warriors.

Suddenly, a mailed foot almost squashes you as the dwarf plods past on his patrol. Not even looking down, he fails to notice you, and keeps his eyes locked on the barricade ahead. He soon turns, walking straight back in the other direction, his eyes locked on the twin blockage down the street.

If you want to get close enough to hear the conversation, make a hide check, DC 25. If you succeed, read the next spoiler. If you fail, you can assume they notice you, read the third spoiler.

Horvis, hide check passed Highlight to display spoiler: {You crawl forward until only a few feet from the party. The two warriors are complaining. The heavy-armored one says, "We've been here almost six months by my calculations. When is the gnome going to fix up my leg? Why can't you do something about it?"

The half-elf responds, "I've told you a hundred times, I haven't received any sort of magical gifts for months! What do you want me to do, aside from applying the poultice that's keeping the poison at bay?"

The gnome laughs quietly, and the warrior turns and frowns at him. "Something funny, Jor?" Smiling, the gnome replies, "Admit that this is your fault, and your leg will be as good as new."

The warrior bellows back, "THIS IS NOT MY FAULT! You think it's my fault Hurn and Cristof are dead? You think it's my fault this scum" - he points a finger at the robed man - "took the dwarf's brain hostage and sealed our fates? TO hell with you Jor. I wouldn't take your healing if you did offer it!"

The Gnome laughs again and stands, walking off a few paces before sitting alone again. The warriors turn back to the fire. The human says to the half-elf, "Once Gaebril is done with that silly book, he needs to have the dwarf fix up the guard walls again." The half-elf nods, and they sit in silence for the time being.
}

Horvis, hide check failed Highlight to display spoiler: {The short gnome or halfling suddenly giggles as his head turns in your direction. "Finally," he says. "Snake. That's good eating, for once. He stands up and walks toward you. As he does so, the half-elf grabs his bow and nocks an arrow in one fluid, almost invisible motion.}
