To Attack, or Not to Attack Friday November 23rd, 2007 10:00:12 AM
Vedik and Horvis return with their report. Vedik expresses his concern over a fellow dwarf in trouble, and Monthor seconds the sentiment with a flourish of his axe. Draax, too, is ready to jump the possible enemies.
Arien cautions against running into a fight without proper planning, while Juliander jokingly complains of the Knights' predicament.
Jova warns against taking the situation at face value, thinking of recent instances of trickery in the city.
Lumi then speaks up, questioning whether the Knights can even consider leaving the supposedly endangered dwarf, without becoming as bad as the enemies they face.
Tratain decides to send Horvis back for another look, and gives the small snake some instruction on what to look for. At that, Horvis slithers away again, through the rubble heap and back onto the blocked-off street.
Horvis Highlight to display spoiler: { You make your way back down the street toward the mysterious party, coming to within 30-40 feet of them. From here, you watch as the party talks in low voices, a few of them looking around often as if expecting danger to appear at any moment.
The black-robed man puts his teacup away and takes out a small, dusty book. He flips through a few pages, then finds one he likes and begins reading in earnest, his lips moving faintly as he does so.
The woman in grey watches him for a moment, then gives her head a shake and turns her body so her back is to him, bringing her knees to her chest and wrapping her arms around them. She sits in silence, ocassionally grimacing or rolling her eyes at the conversation between the two warriors.
Suddenly, a mailed foot almost squashes you as the dwarf plods past on his patrol. Not even looking down, he fails to notice you, and keeps his eyes locked on the barricade ahead. He soon turns, walking straight back in the other direction, his eyes locked on the twin blockage down the street.
If you want to get close enough to hear the conversation, make a hide check, DC 25. If you succeed, read the next spoiler. If you fail, you can assume they notice you, read the third spoiler.}
Horvis, hide check passed Highlight to display spoiler: {You crawl forward until only a few feet from the party. The two warriors are complaining. The heavy-armored one says, "We've been here almost six months by my calculations. When is the gnome going to fix up my leg? Why can't you do something about it?"
The half-elf responds, "I've told you a hundred times, I haven't received any sort of magical gifts for months! What do you want me to do, aside from applying the poultice that's keeping the poison at bay?"
The gnome laughs quietly, and the warrior turns and frowns at him. "Something funny, Jor?" Smiling, the gnome replies, "Admit that this is your fault, and your leg will be as good as new."
The warrior bellows back, "THIS IS NOT MY FAULT! You think it's my fault Hurn and Cristof are dead? You think it's my fault this scum" - he points a finger at the robed man - "took the dwarf's brain hostage and sealed our fates? TO hell with you Jor. I wouldn't take your healing if you did offer it!"
The Gnome laughs again and stands, walking off a few paces before sitting alone again. The warriors turn back to the fire. The human says to the half-elf, "Once Gaebril is done with that silly book, he needs to have the dwarf fix up the guard walls again." The half-elf nods, and they sit in silence for the time being.}
Horvis, hide check failed Highlight to display spoiler: {The short gnome or halfling suddenly giggles as his head turns in your direction. "Finally," he says. "Snake. That's good eating, for once. He stands up and walks toward you. As he does so, the half-elf grabs his bow and nocks an arrow in one fluid, almost invisible motion.}
Arien Friday November 23rd, 2007 8:30:38 PM
Arien reviews the spells that he has left to cast mentally trying to decide what would work best against this group should they actually come to battle.

The tiny snake crawls closer, trying to keep close to any cover. Horvis strains to hear what he can from the people as he does. Once he has heard enough, Horvis returns to his companions. Hide = 27, Listen = 26, Move Silently = 21, Spot = 14
Horvis wriggles back to where his companions wait and hisses at them.
"The robed man, the older one, is somehow controlling the whole lot of them. From what I overheard, the rest of the people were part of a group that has been the city for a while ... months, maybe. For some reason, the robed man's control of the dwarf prevents the others from acting. Although, from what I overheard, they're at each other's throats already."
Horvis looks around at the others before speaking again.
"If you want to act, I'd suggest that I sneak in close to the robed man. I can try to bite him, or simply shift to something big and nasty and take him out of the fight."

Given the amount of time it would take for Horvis, as a tiny viper, to move to the enemy, listen to their conversation, and move back, the original 5 minutes of invisibility would have passed already. If you plan to be invisible you'd have to redo it. -M

Tratain Sunday November 25th, 2007 8:40:41 PM
Tratain says "So, it seems that the Black Robed mage has the others under his power somehow? It must be more than that. It would be a simple thing to protect the Dwarfs Mind from compulsion magic, it must mean that if they had a cleric he must be dead or he has taken the Mages side now. I think it would be a good idea Vedik, when we are ready for you to fly straight to the dwarf and get him within you Magic Circle, we can give you our wand of Protection from Evil as well so that the dwarf isn't reliant on staying very close to you. Lets watch them for a little bit longer and see if the dwarf just keeps walking around, we can watch his path and Vedik and grab him when he's furthest from the rest of them. I want all of us invisible when we attack, use the wand Juliander when we are ready. I'd Like Horvis to sneak close again, it shouldn't be a problem when we're ready since you'll be invisible. I'd like A fly spell cast on Monthor as well. When Vedik blocks the Control we won't know if they will know immedietly. Try and ask him Vedik who are his comrades and who are enemies. If it comes to a fight I want the black robed Mage eliminated right away. Horvis, Monthor and Arien, hes your Target. Drop him fast as you can. If the others Look like they're going to fight we'll focus on them next. Also, we need to drop the Veil spell. Any chance we have of not fighting them goes away if we all become visible and they see a bunch of Devils."
Monthor Monday November 26th, 2007 7:55:09 AM
Monthor listens to Tratain's battle plan.
" Nice... if ye want, me can dimension door me way across from them and catch them in a pincer move. Get them looking one way and me'll hit them from behind. Better yet, me can let Draax take me cloak. He can then pepper them with arrows from behind their lines. "
:: Monthor grins... ::
" Monthor the flying invisible dwarf hovers above the black robe.. at the appointed time, he drops on the mage from above and then snaps his neck, announcing the other Grey Knights to attack.... "
Plans Monday November 26th, 2007 4:06:03 PM
The Knights take stock of the situation, and it appears universally agreed that they intend to free the dwarf from whatever bond holds him, and kill the black-robed man.
Tratain directs that MOnthor fly, invisibly, to Black Robe and prepare to attack, along with Horvis and Arien, while Vedik takes care of blocking any mind-controlling effects on the dwarf.
With but a short period of further spying, it is clear the dwarf is simply walking a patrol path. He walks to one barricade, turns, then walks to the other, and continues to do so without pause. [when everything starts, I'll roll randomly to determine where he is at the beginning, or you can specify "we start when the dwarf gets to ___ spot."]
Map is below. FOr each person, please specify (1) where you intend to be at the start, (2) how you intend to get there, (3) what your first action is (include any possible rolls you'll need). Someone (I assume Tratain, but whoever) specify the circumstance(s) under which you will start the encounter (barring any unfortunate, unexpected events that start it for you).

Couple things
Jova, I believe Expidition retreat is a personal spell. I don't think it can be cast on others, though I don't have my books infront of me and I'm leaving right now for work so I'm not positive.
Arien, Tratain asked for the Veil spell to be dropped a couple rounds ago. This plan is a very bad one if we want to do anything other than kill all of them if we look like devils. If we look normal theres a chance some of them don't fight if/when we free the dwarf. If Arien is unable or unwilling to Drop the Veil spell say so, I have a second plan we can use if we look like devils. for this one we need to look normal, let us know.

Joe you are right. Sorry. I had casted this spell on Monthor in an earlier module and was allowed to. But it does say personal, so no go.
If I were to cast it from the staff would it work? or weould Lumi need to hold the staff and cast it upon himself?
Thanks guys.
I can't find anything in my cursory review of the magic rules. I believe you can only cast a "self" spell on yourself no matter what tool is used. I may be missing something, and if I am, we'll follow the rules. But if there's nothing on this, I'd rule that a "self" requirement can't be avoided by crafting a scroll, wand, staff, etc. The person must use that item themself to get the effect.
But again, if someone can point me to a rule I missed, we'll follow that.

As the Knights go about making themselves invisible, there is a great lot of bumping and bruising, as now only Jova can see where everyone. Jova, in fact, takes great delight in watching the Knights walk face first into each other as they prepare for combat.
Once ready, Juliander and Tratain fly to the southwest corner of the street, beyond the barricade. [you both specified the same square, so Juliander is floating above Tratain]
Jova casts a few spells on himself and Lumi, making each invisible, and allowing Lumi to fly for a time.
Arien worries about the party's appearance, feeling that a team of devils may not go over so well with these other adventurers. [is the spell dismissed, or no?]
Draax, once invisible, walks to the barricade (bumping into what may be Jova), and prepares to scale the wall once the fight ensues.
Vedik flies off, waiting at about the midpoint of the dwarf's patrol path, hoping to sever the supposed mental bond controlling him.
Monthor also flies off silently, positioning himself above the black-robed mage, ready to jump on him [I can't see how you'd get them both without some odd modification of the grapple/attack rules that we're not going into. You are directly above black-robe, I just move you over on the map for ease.]
Lumi floats upward, hovering above the barrier and preparing an aerial charge upon his unsuspecting enemies.
Horvis slithers into the street for a third time. This time, the Knights watch as their now-tiny companion makes his way over the rubble-strewn street, now and again losing sight of the miniscule snake.
Horvis takes a circuitous route, moving northeast, then coming down from the north, attempting to move as close as possible to the black-robed mage.
He comes in directly behind the two robed ones. Slowly moving forward, he pays the most attention to the warrior and bowman sitting opposite the fire. The warrior appears lost in thought and is paying no mind to his surroundings.
The bowman, on the other hand, tenses as Horvis slithers closer and closer to the mage. He suddenly snatches up his bow and leaps to his feet, knocking an arrow to the string.
"My dinner tonight!" he yelps, turning the bow on Horvis. "Hold still Gaebril, maybe it'll bite you and make this an even better night. HA!"
As he talks, he lets the arrow fly at Horvis, hitting AC 27 for 4 damage plus 3 damage. [Horvis, plese figure out your AC and let me know if this hits]
Juliander is the only one who pre-rolled an attack. He is free to apply that roll to this turn, or just start with another action due to the surprise.
The dwarf's position was determined randomly since things started early.
Horvis the 12-headed Cryohydra (AC 37; HP 152/152) - Greater Magic Fang, Longstrider (Myrridan's Blackthorn) d20+15=29 d20+15=19 2d8(1+2)+6=9 2d8(8+5)+6=19 d6=4 d6=4 Tuesday November 27th, 2007 10:31:04 PM
The arrow was too close for the tiny snake's comfort, nearly hitting him like that. So Horvis shifts into a far more battle-worthy form ... the new form that he learned when they first entered this place, the huge cryohydra. OOC - Snake's AC was 32
Suddenly, a hydra appears where there once was a tiny snake. The monster is right beside the black-robed mage, possibly even pushing the mage aside into the fire.
OOC - Not sure whether you consider this possible, but Horvis would like his size increase to "push" the black-robe south into the fire pit
Horvis is content to remain where he is, threatening nearly all of the people around the fire. If the mage moves away, or otherwise provokes an attack, Horvis will strike.

ooc> Not really sur the action mechanics will work really. Monthor plans on just dropping on top of the mage from 20 feet up. i.e., deactivating his winged boots and letting gravity do it's thing. Monthor should just drop like a big freaking boulder right on top of him. How do I role that? How would we calculate damage? Since it's not really an attack, does Monthor remain invisible?
Lumi-Juova (AC 28, HP 124/124) d20+14=25 d20+14=15 Wednesday November 28th, 2007 11:19:38 AM
Lumi continues to hover at U2, 60 feet above the ground. The wemic sees the attack on Horvis and then the actions of his companions and he suddenly realizes a problem. If everyone is invisible, there is a chance that his charge will only collide with an ally and not the intended target!
So Lumi chooses not to move, keeping himself as an invisible reinforcement until the situation resolves itself a little better.
Given his height advantage, he looks intently around to scout out the situation. (Spot:25, Listen:15)

Once we are satisfied we will leave you be, no worse for wear. If you force this confrontation thought we will have no choice but to kill you."
Tratain again readies an action to counterspell if the black robed mage attempts to cast a spell.

Round 1 Results d4=1 Wednesday November 28th, 2007 8:50:44 PM
As the bowman's arrow embeds itself in the street next to Horvis, the shifter begins to grow and morph into a new creature. In but a heartbeat, an enormous hydra stands among the enemy, rearing its heads and screeching in anger.
The black-robed mage is pushed aside by the growing beast, falling to the side. [I rolled randomly, I don't think you could try to force him into a specific square just by growing]
Jova waits patiently on the outskirts of the scene, biding his time until he jumps into action.
Draax, hearing the commotion, scrambles over the barricade and moves eastward, setting himself up to attack if the need arises.
Suddenly, the mage that was already pushed aside slams into the ground, as if an invisible weight landed on his chest. His eyes bulge with surprise as the air is knocked out of his body.
Monthor Highlight to display spoiler: { You fall onto the mage and are prone on top of him. I am torn on the invisibility issue, because the spell description gives arguments both ways, but I'm going with "causing indirect damage is not an attack" and letting you stay invisible, party because I don't have time to check the rules board tonight, and partly because I think its more entertaining that way. Have fun with it.}
Lumi continues to hover invisibly in his place, worried about hitting a fellow Knight if he rushes forward blindly.
Vedik floats down to the dwarf on patrol, enveloping him in his magic circle. The dwarf suddenly stops his pacing and looks around, clearly confused and bewildered.
Vedik Highlight to display spoiler: {"Wha? WHo?" the dwarf mumbles, looking around. "He had me. . . How did. . . who is talking?" Looking around, his eyes lock on the black-robed mage. Growling under his breath, he narrows his eyes, tightens his grip on the enormous axe, and raises it above his head, clearly preparing to charge the mage.}
As the dwarf gets his bearings, he sees the black-robed mage in the distance. He raises his waraxe high and takes a step forward.
Tratain's voice then bellows forth a warning to the enemies, calling on them to stand down and avoid any bloodshed. [will deal with potential counterspelling in post below]

The sudden appearance of the cryohydra and Tratain's disembodied voice appear to be too much for some of the enemies.
"Eep!" squeaks the halfling. He almost dives into the alleyway next to him and runs off. Horvis gets an attack of opportunity if he wants it.
The bowman, keeping one eye on Horvis, looks around briefly, trying to locate the source of the bellowing voice. He keeps an arrow nocked on his bow, but points it to the ground, taking one step, then another, away from Horvis, until he backs himself towards the east end of the street [full withdraw]. As he moves, he talks out of the side of his mouth, "Now Dorbun, you know I didn't want this to happen to you. Gaebril made that decision."
The grey-robed woman sits in place, clearly terrified by the appearance of the hydra.
"Fools!" yells the warrior. "You fall apart at the slightest show of trickery?" Without hesitation, he takes a step to the side, drawing his blade in one fluid motion and swinging it at Horvis' torso.
He hits: AC 44, crit confirm 32, for 12 damage (28 if crit) AC 37, for 15 damage AC 35, crit confirm 22, for 12 damage (24 if crit) AC 25, for 12 damage
[note: I forgot to subtract 5 for each iterative attack in the rolls, but did so here]
The black robed mage raises a hand and points it toward Horvis. He mumbles a few words, and a small globe of water and ice forms in front of him. [Horvis and Monthor get attacks of opportunity if they want them, Monthor, remener you are prone]
Somehow, the icy ball dissipates even as the mage forms it, and he spews forth a curse so foul no bard would see fit to repeat it in telling this tale.

Gotta respectfully ask... how can the black cloaked mage cast a spell with a 300+ pound dwarf sitting on his chest? A "just because" answer as always is acceptable. Thanks
To be honest, because (1) I knew he was a dead man in a matter of seconds, and (2) I knew the spell wouldn't work due to other factors but thought the text would be more fun that way, so I just stretched reality a bit more than usual. :) -M

Tratain's voice booms out once more, this time appealing to the now-normal dwarf. "Faw!" the dwarf calls back to no one in particular. "Take him apart for all I care. It's Gaebril I want to take my justice out on!"
At that moment, Horvis chooses to lash out at the black robed man apparently named Gaebril. His many heads strike downward, one and two at a time. Nearly all connect, biting and slashing into the man's skin as he screams in pain. Horvis feels a few of his heads blocked from their target by a bulbous, invisible shape. [most hit, but I am giving him a bit of cover from the invisible Monthor on top.]
At the same time, Monthor becomes visible as his axe rises and falls, first severing one of the man's arms before embedding itself in his exposed chest.
The mage's screams die as fast as they started, and the last of Horvis' hydra heads turns and takes a snap at the warrior, just barely grazing his arm, but giving him a bloody cut in any case.
Arien and Jova stand ready, preparing themselvesto counter any further threats against their fellow Knights.
Lumi takes the opportunity to make an aerial charge on the warrior, becoming visible even as the flat of his blade smacks into the man's back, causing two loud thumps as the warrior grunts in pain and surprise. As he sees Lumi appear, a flash of fear crosses his visage, then he steels himself again. "Mayhap, furball, but I can take one of you with me," he forces the words out, attempting to sound fiercer than he does.
Draax readies his bow, training his sight on the opposing bowman and preparing to fire if the need arises.
Vedik sighs and reaches out, touching the dwarf on the shoulder and filling him with magical energy before flying off. Vedik remains invisible. [not counting that as an attack, he apparently is not unfriendly to you]

"Dorbun! Let's talk about this brother," calls the bowman as the dwarf charges forward.
Not heeding his former companion, the dwarf presses his attack. The swing goes far wide, and anger fills the dwarf's face. "You trick me! You allow that scum to take my mind! You deserve a slow, painful death, you bastard!"
The half-elf bowman's shoulders visibly sag, and he raises his bow, aiming at the warrior. He lets three arrows fly. Two go wide, nearly slicing Monthor as they hit the ground. One buries itself in the man's chest, causing him to scream once again in pain.
The grey-robed woman steels herself, then takes a step forward, putting her feet into the edges of the fire and screaming in agony. She reaches out and takes hold of the warrior's shoulder. She closes her eyes for a brief second in concentration, and suddenly, she and the warrior disappear.

[hey all. sorry for the delay in posting. Wind knocked our power out and I couldn't get onto the internet for a bit.]
Horvis stands in place, his heads snaking every way at once, looking for any more threats to the Knights.
Tratain yells at the dwarf to stand down. Pausing, the dwarf lowers his axe and his shoulders sag. "You are right. You certainly are right. Domi forgive me for lowering myself to their level."
He slides his axe into a leather thong at his waist, then looks around, as if seeing all of you for the first time (or, those who are visible). "Thank you for saving me," he calls to no one in particular.
At Tratain's further command, the bowman removes the arrow from his bow and takes another step back toward the wall. "Yes . . . well . . . shall we discuss the terms of my surrender, then? Just keep Dorbun there away from me, at least until he sees none of this was my fault."
At Tratain's question of the whereabouts of the other two enemies, he says, "Beats me. Celinda likes to teleport herself away at the first sign of danger. Not the first time she's left us high and dry."
Meanwhile, Lumi recalls the fleeing halfling, and peers down the nearby alleyway, looking for any sign of the escapee.

Draax and Monthor continue to guard their respective wards, Monthor with gruff words, and Draax from the cover of invisibility.
Vedik checks on the well-being of his comrades, while Juliander dismisses his own invisibility. The bowman gives a start as Juliander appears. "How many of you are there anyway?" he asks.
Arien and Jova Highlight to display spoiler: { [Arien, please be sure to give me diplo, bluff or intimidate rolls if you want to influence their actions, or anyone else's for that matter] The newly-appeared pair look Arien up and down. "Markus, we should listen. He . . . feels much stronger than I."
"Fah!" mutters the one called Markus. "No elf has ever gotten the best of me!" With that, he tears his arm from the woman's grip and bolts southeast into the street.
The woman hesitates for a moment, looking from Markus to Arien, not bothering to hide the look of fear in her face. She decides to stick with her companion, and runs after him, quite a bit slower than he.
They get a few feet when Jova suddenly appears as his spell fires off at the warrior. Tripping over his own feet, Markus falls to the ground, laughing uncontrollably as he drops his sword to grip his sides.
[Arien, you can cast a spell as well, and I'll add in the results]
Celinda pauses as Markus falls, then turns back toward Arien and Jova. She makes ready to cast a spell, but before she can, Arien chants a few words and a look of utter confusion comes over her face. Instead of turning on Arien, she whirls back and falls on the laughing warrior, beating him with her fists and screaming in rage.}
Those inside the barricaded street hear the sound of loud, uncontrolled, raucous laughter coming from just south of the blockage. Then, the laughter is immediately followed by the sound of a woman screaming angrily.
Map is unaltered except for whatever Arien and Jova have experienced.

Jova sees the sword fall as the warrior also collapses in laughter. Seeing his chance to rid the warrior of his weapon, Jova flies down and grabs the seord and then elevates again about 20 feet above the pair. He also moves 10 feet closer to Atien.
"Arien, how should we bind the prisoners? When he stops laughing, he surely will be mad. He may call other bad monsters down upon us, not even knowing the danger we are in."
Jova inspects the sword. Not knowing much about armor or weapons, he simply admires the weapon. Seeking out any magical markings.

The cryohydra moves away from the building, towards the centre of the street. Horvis wants to be in a position to threaten both the dwarf and the bowman.
And, as much as he can, Horvis continues to pretend to be a simple monster.
Winding down the fight Tuesday December 4th, 2007 9:30:30 PM
Jova and Arien Highlight to display spoiler: { The two of you make quick work of the fleeing duo, who now lay in a jumble on the ground nearby, one flailing away with her fists, the other laughing even as he is beaten.
Jova flies over and grabs Markus' sword. It doesn't have any special markings or other identifying features, but you see a faint glowing through the mud and grime covering it. Though he apparently hasn't cleaned it well in some time, you can immediately tell the sword is well above the average stock.}
Draax remains invisible, but answers Vedik's query, causing the bowman and the dwarf to start when yet another disembodied voice calls out.
Vedik rises a bit more into the air, until he reaches a vantage point where he can see over the nearby barrier. Vedik Highlight to display spoiler: {You can see Arien and Jova back where the group started, and near them in the street are the warrior and sorceress. THe warrior is laying on his back, laughing uncontrollably, while the woman is flailing about, punching him and apparently attempting to beat him senseless.}
Lumi, upon hearing the noises past the barricade, leaps into action and flies over the barrier toward his friends. Lumi, you see what is in Vedik's spoiler above, though you have enough movement to be right in the mix if you like.
Tratain does likewise, heading for the noise in case danger is afoot. Tratain also sees what is in Vedik's spoiler.
Tratain, if you wish to continue with the grapple after seeing the situation, please let me know. You will win the grapple check, but you may not want to carry through with it.
Monthor wants to forget about tying people up, and suggests simply taking their weapons. Upon hearing this statement, Dorbun the dwarf stiffens.
"Sir, I thank you for helping to save me, but I must dissent! This axe -" he rubs the haft lovingly "-was a gift from my dying father, another Golden Eagle. My last oath to him before he passed was to die with my face to the enemy, my axe in my hands, and never to relinquish it to friend or foe. I'll not do so now, even if it means my death."
The half-elf, standing off to the side, drops his bow to the ground with a clatter. "This is just a plain old bow," he says quickly.
Juliander snickers at the bowman's question, and again at his evident lack of a backbone. Dorbun takes a step away from Juliander as the bard attempts to take his axe. The dwarf shakes his head, more with a resigned look to his face than one of menace.
Arien (hp 60/60) AC 21 (Mage Armor) Tuesday December 4th, 2007 10:05:27 PM
As other group members swoop in Arien dismisses the spell and allows them to restrain or otherwise incapacitate the duo.
Monthor Tuesday December 4th, 2007 10:10:05 PM
The dwarf looks at Dorbun and answers back in dwarvish.
" Not YOU."
With a wide motion of hid hands indicates the others in the dwarve's group.
" THEM! "
In Common to the bowman.
" And drop any other weapons ye may have on ye. If me find so much as a pin on yer person, me'll be tearing off yer arms like a lad would tear off the wings off a fly. "
Back to Durban " Unless you can persuade us otherwise, their gear are ours as spoil of battle, your stuff you can keep seeing like ye were being under the sway of that black mage and all. But we'll want to hear from you why you are here and how you came to know these others. We'll also want to know what you've experienced in these parts so far. "
Monthor pats the dwarf hard on the back.
" And ye can cut out the 'sirs'. Me ain't no 'sir'. Me work for a living! "
Without taking his eye off the bowman, Monthor laughs a deep and frightning belly laugh.
" Me be Monthor, called Magekiller, of the Axe Head Clan of Dirt City. Formally of the Windhorn Hamleteers and Monthor's Angels. Currently part of the Grey Knights. Please to make yer aquaintance. "

"The mage we've killed is one thing, but the others...if we take their gear, we're responsible for whatever befalls them. This is not a safe place for the defenseless. If we wanted to kill them, we should have done so in combat."
To the dwarf, he says, "I am Vedik, master potter and faithful of Alemi. Where I'm from is...well...I don't recall to be honest. Until a bit ago things were kinda hazy."

Monthor looks up at Vedik...
" Well then maybe we should have killed them. " Says Monthor sarcasticaly,
" Me not willing to have a party of adventurers at me back looking for vengence. Let's at least inventory what they have and then decide what THEY need versus what they can use to do us harm. We can decide what to do with them once our new friend here tells us his tale. But again, let's get out of the open. "

Tratain flies over towards the Woman and the Fighter, not quite sure how this situation came to pass he begins taking action anyways. He lands near his companions and punches a wall to dispel his invisibility and begins speaking.
He says "Jova and Arien Grab the woman, take her spell component pouch so she'll be more limited in what she can do if she tries to bolt again. Lumi please help me with the Warrior. We'll take them back to the others."
He tells the Woman and Man "Please do not try to run again you are defenseless now, you have no weapons. We might just let you go if you run again, how long do you think you will last in this City just the two of you with no way to defend yourselves. You will come to no harm while in our care, now we wish only to talk."
When/if the group is able to herd everyone back together the protector asks "Well now, I would like to hear your stories before deciding anything. We Only know what we saw, which wasn't much. I would like to know who you are and why you came to this City, also I would like to know why if he is your friend, that you let him be enslaved like that."

Stories Wednesday December 5th, 2007 9:37:01 PM
Arien dismisses his spells, allowing his friends to bind the man and woman. Tratain directs the Knights in binding and moving the pair. THeir weapons are removed, though no spell components are found on the woman. Lumi squeezes the warrior in an enormous bear hug, or more aptly lion hug, and swoops him away.
The man and woman allow themselves to be manhandled, the fight apparently out of them at this point.
Monthor's words cause Dorbun to relax a bit, and he agreeably launches into his tale. [all stories are at the end of post for ease]
Juliander backs off from the dwarf, and he smiles back, his look assuring Juliander that no offense was taken.
The half-elf bowman takes one look at Monthor, his eyes widening, then begins stripping completely. In a matter of moments, he is down to his breeches, his clothing and accoutremants laying in a pile next to him. He gives a nervous spin, showing he has nothing else to remove, save any shreds of dignity he may retain.
Monthor and Vedik introduce themselves to Dorbun, and Monthor suggests moving somewhere less obvious. [the surrounding buildings are all relatively intact]

Dorbun's tale Wednesday December 5th, 2007 9:56:50 PM
"Well met," Dorbun says to Monthor and Vedik, and nods to each of the others. "As you now know, my name is Dorbun. Dorbun, son of Dervon, paladin of Domi and formerly of the Golden Eagles brigade. I claim no further titles than that.
"I'm sure you know of the Golden Eagles," he looks around, seeing that this is apparently not the case. "Well . . . we were a small military contingent, mostly paladins, like myself, with some hardy, honorably warriors and a few holy folk as well. We answered to no liege, except the Almighty. Our self-given mission was to rid the Wold of any evil we could find, and we did so for many years, traveling the lands, righting wrongs and such.
"Then one day, we set upon a tribe of giants that had been harrassing some surrounding villages, and after a few pitched battles, we found ourselves quite beaten. Most of my comrades died in those few days, Domi protect their souls.
"The few of us that remained, we scattered. THose I've come across still hold to the charge we set ourselved, as do I." He pauses, wiping a small tear from his face, his eyes glazing over for a moment.
"Anyway, I heard tell of this ancient, evil city, and sought out some companions to come here. I decided that if I were to live out my days battling evil, what better place to do it, hmm?
"So I ran into Haveril over there," he motions to the half-elf, "and we hit it off. Really not a bad guy, that one, just doesn't speak up for what's right. More's the burden on me, I guess.
"Haveril and I were taken up by a fair sized group claiming to know a way into Fae Skiemir. That included Markus and Celinda over there - they're lovers out of wedlock, you know - along with another pair, Hurn and Cristof, who died a few weeks back when we ran into a Balor up the way.
"Right before we set off for the city, two more begged on to our group: Gaebril, that scum lying over there, and Jor, the little halfling bastard who ran off a few minutes ago. Jor claims to be a cleric of Wardd, but I saw precious little of the healing arts from him. His main preoccupation was to hang out in the shadows and stab things in the back. Most irritating, dishonorable . . ." he trails off, growing angrier for a moment.
"Apologies. So we came to the city and began exploring. Truth be told, I never intended to leave. This is a place where I can achieve my goals, honor my obligation, and atone for any sins I've commited in my life.
"But these others, pretty soon they found they couldn't leave. Every time they tried, that bedamned fog blocked the gates. So they started panicking. Then Hurn and Cristof died, and they got even more scared. We blocked off this street and have been hiding here for weeks now, not sure what to do or where to go.
"Then one day, Gaebril approaches me, pulls me aside from the others. He starts talking all nice, so I knew something was up. He was the most disgusting, despicable man I've ever come across. Anyway, things after that got pretty hazy. I recollect some things, following that bastard's orders and such, but it's all like a dream.
"Then I wake up to find your friend over there tearing him to shreds. Well, to my everlasting shame, I acted as you saw. I'll spend my days atoning for my misdeeds, though I can't say I'm too sorry for that evil mage's fate.
"That's my story, for what it's worth. Once you kind folk let me free, I'll be heading back into the city. I can't say how long I'll last, but I can promise you that some of the darkness in this foul place will be purged before I go. That's about the best legacy I can leave for myself."
Haveril's tale Wednesday December 5th, 2007 10:03:34 PM
The half-elf stands quietly while Dorbun talks, his head hanging low.
Frowning, he picks up where the dwarf left off. "It's all accurate. We can't get out of here, none of us, and I'm scared we never will. I don't hold the same convictions the dwarf does, and I don't want to die here, no sir.
"I'm a woodsman, like the rest of my folks, and I ran into DOrbun there in my travels. He described this city, and well, it sounded like a gold mine. See, we grew up poor, and I thought this was my ticket to the easy life. Retire with my own hunting preserve! Ha!" His laugh sounds forced, and he shakes while he talks.
"Anyway, it hasn't worked out like that, and well, we were getting real scared there for awhile. Then one day, Gaebril comes back with Dorbun and starts giving orders to him. 'shore up those barricades.' 'hunt us down some food.' 'go check out that noise.' and what not.
"I had my suspicions what was going on. I know I should have done something. Hell, I could have put an arrow through that black heart of Gaebril's from fifty paces.
"But I was scared. I didn't know what he might do to me if I tried. And -" if possible, his head hangs even lower, and he refuses to look in DOrbun's direction "-and it was so much easier with Dorbun protecting us, against his will or otherwise. I guess . . . I guess I figured it was him or the rest of us."
He stops for a moment, his shoulders shaking. "I don't know what you're going to do to me, but if you let me and the other two go, we might have a fighting chance out there. Maybe . . . maybe without Gaebril and Jor we might get out of this forsaken city."
Markus' and Celinda's tale Wednesday December 5th, 2007 10:12:59 PM
The warrior, Markus, finally barks out a laugh, as if he can't take any more of Haveril's speech.
"You've been a whining pansy ever since we got here, Haveril."
Looking around, he launches into his own speech. "Look, all I can say is, survival of the fittest. I'm not happy about what happened to Dorbun, but it didn't happen to me, and I couldn't do anything about it, so I didn't.
"I came here for the same reasons as Hav over there. Celinda and I thought we could retire and forget the adventuring life. Well, we didn't expect things to be so crazy in here.
"I know a good thing when I see it, and Dorbun being taken over was a good thing for the rest of us. I'm sorry to say it, dwarf, but if you were in my place - well no, you'd be all holier-than-thou about it . . . anyway, it kept us alive, Gaebril's spell, and I can't say I regret it."
Finally, Celinda yells, "SHUT UP, MARKUS! Heavens, but you always were a prick. I have NO idea what I ever saw in you.
"I for one tried to stop that despicable plan of Gaebrils. We had it out more than once, and I'm ashamed to admit he was my better. Even stronger than your mage over there," she nods at Arien, "and I can tell just from feeling his presence he's stronger than me."
She turns her head to Dorbun. "But Dorbun, I tried. I really tried. The last time, it felt like he was melting my brain out of my head, and he told me if I ever crossed him again, he'd kill Markus while I watched, then kill me for fun!" She breaks down into sobs and wails, burying her face in a fold of her cloak.
Markus rolls his eyes. "That decrepit old man? I'd stab him in his sleep if I knew he threatened my life, and that's a fact." He spits on the ground for added effect.

Arien Thursday December 6th, 2007 1:44:36 AM
"Surely there is no need to make any decisions right now," Arien says, before gesturing to Tratain. "I believe that now would be an appropriate time to retire for the night. Vedik sits, wings folded, listening to the stories. At some point he appears, the invisibility fading.
"Dorbun, I have a suggestion, if Tratain agrees. I am a priest of Alemi, from a new and small sect called Fixers. You've probably not heard of us, we formed a year or two ago, in the aftermath of the year of ascension. I'm still not clear how, but I ended up in Gargul's realm.
This group found me there, and agreed to bring me on their quest. We are here for a just cause, and we will be dealing a terrible blow to the evil here. If the group will have you, come with us. It is right, I think, for servants of Domi and Alemi to work together in this."
He then turns to the others.
"You were foolish to come here seeking riches for yourself. Greed is the undoing of this city, and those that come here for selfish intent rarely get out from what I've heard.
To Arien he says "I would like to rest, but I do not know if it is wise. I wouldn't say I trust our guests, and the halfling is still out there, perhaps watching us even as we speak.
Monthor Thursday December 6th, 2007 11:57:40 AM

'cause that would be a VERY bad idea.... and you ( points at Markus)... me don't like you... Me'd keep quiet and out of trouble if me were you...
Me suggests that all of their magic items and weapons need to stay with us for now for our safety.. and ultimately yours. Except for our new dwarven friend of course...
Me don't like having that halfling at our back though... Dorbun, what's the wee one's story? Do we need to worry about him?
Me all for Dorbun taging along if he chooses too. Never be to many dwarves me always says... Maybe Haveril too with some supervision.. and the lass if she can prove she can be trusted...

He says "Haveril, first off put your gear back on. I don't believe you'll cause us any trouble and I don't intend to rob you, anyways in this place I'd rather you be armed and able to help if needed."
"Celinda I'd like to hand over the keeping of your two wands to Dorbun, he can decide when and where to return them. I would also suggest, when you get out of this place you evaluate your traveling companions a little better, you seem like a good person while he does not." he finishes glancing at Markus.
He looks at Markus "I'm going to hold on to your sword for the time being. I don't trust you not to do something stupid if I gave it back to you. It would be easier in the long run for us if you did, but the easiest way is not always best. I'll not have you in a position to threaten any of my companions or yours while I can help it."
He nods at Monthor and Lumi and says "Take anything magical or anything that could be used as a weapon from him and hold onto it while we decide what to do with him. Do not try and resist Markus, it will go poorly for you and I don't think anyone will help you now."
Tratain listens to the others a moment and then addresses Dorbun saying "Some of my companions have invited you to travel with us, I would not object to this if you wished it. However I believe there is also another task that you might do." He nods at Haveril and Celinda and says "Your companions have been trapped here a long time it seems, this is a very dangerous and Evil Place. I do not think that they will be able to get out by themselves. I would ask that you escort them back to safer lands. Celinda fought for you even though it almost cost her her life, and Haveril...well he seems like a decent fellow but he needs guidance, and who better to do that than a paladin of Domi. They do not deserve to die here, and if we take them with us it will be very dangerous."
He continues "I would also reconsider your decision to just stay here and fight until you die, it is not our way. Who can you protect Dorbun, when you are dead. There are too few of us who Truly Follow Domi, who will stand against the Darkness for you to throw your life away here, and that is what you will be doing with no objective here other than to kill as many evil beings as you can before they bring you down. Clear goals are what is needed in this evil place. The choice is yours."
He addresses the group "We will spend the night here, but do not use your Magic Arien. Creatures in this place are attracted to magic it seems so I'd rather not tempt them. Dorbun and his comrades spend much time here and were fine, we should be aswell. We can make our decisions on what to do tonight and act on them tomorrow."
Tratain heals Lumi for 32 and 31 and then heals himself.

Plans for the Night Friday December 7th, 2007 8:12:25 AM
Draax monitors the situation from his invisible vantage point. As the stories progress, his invisibility finally wears off, and he appears in front of the group. Haveril gives a start, and Markus curses under his breath as yet another Knight is seen.
Horvis, meanwhile, keeps a careful watch on the area, not letting the enemies know just who or what he is.
Arien suggests taking a rest until morning. At that, Haveril clears his throat. "Ahem . . . excuse me for interrupting, but if you plan to be sleeping, you should know, we never did that at night. We always went to sleep first thing in the morning. That's when the monsters seem to be the quietest.
"They always harrass us at night. I'd be a bit careful if I were you."
Vedik expresses some concern over sleeping here, then offers Dorbun the opportunity to accompany the Knights on their mission. Turning to the others, he admonishes them as to their goals in Fae Skiemir, lecturing on the effects of greed on inhabitants of the city.
At Monthor's words, Markus gives a snort, then looks at the dwarf. Seeing Monthor appears quite serious, he clears his throat and looks away, his face a bit red.
Dorbun replies to Monthor's question, "Jor? That little brat is probably long gone, if not dead. He's sneaky, but he's not all that brave. I suspect you'll never hear or see him again. He's just dumb enough to get himself killed out there."
Lumi, still wary, volunteers to keep the first watch if the Knights decide to rest here, expressing his distaste for a sneaky halfling roaming the streets.
Tratain gives some instructions, and tells the former enemies how he plans to handle their affairs. Celinda lowers her eyes at his words, and mumbles, "I believe you are right, sir. Though it doesn't matter much, unless I escape this place."
Markus snorts again and rolls his eyes, but otherwise keeps his mouth shut, surreptitiously glancing in Monthor's direction.
Dorbun listens intently as Tratain talks with him. "Ah, so young, but so wise. I believe you have the right of it, brother.
"Maybe, if I need to atone for my shortcomings, bringing these poor, undeserving fools to safety is just the way to do it. Ah, such a sacrifice could make Domi proud of me again. Yes! If you'll let me, I will do what I can to bring them out of this hell.
"But!" he says, looking directly at Markus. "I'll not hesitate to dole out Domi's judgment, should any need arise. Am I clear, Markus? Look at me boy!"
Markus finally looks up and meets Dorbun's gaze, a challenge on his face. Dorbun steps up, on his toes, and puts his face almost nose-to-nose with Markus, speaking quietly.
"You listen closely, you worthless snot. I may be holy, but I'll not hesitate to take off your head at the first sign of trouble. I don't think Domi would frown all that much if I removed your pathetic stain from this Wold, and if you so much as blink without my express permission, my axe and your neck are going to have a party. Now you look me in the eye and tell me if I'm clear enough for you, boy."
Markus, by this time, is visibly shaking, though whether in fear or anger is difficult to tell. FInally, after a few tense moments, he mumbles, "Clear," and turns away.
Celinda removes her rings and hands them over to Monthor without a word. Markus' latest indignity seems to be almost too much to bear, but he finally begins removing his armor and clothing, stripping to his undergarments, then flopping on the ground in silence.
Juliander remains to the side, quietly examining Markus and Celinda. Juliander Highlight to display spoiler: { You sense that both are exactly as they seem. Markus is an absolute ass, haughty and over-confidant, and you think his challenging demeanor is genuine. You suspect that he isn't going to get any more trustworthy or easier to handle.
Celinda, on the other hand, appears to be a genuinely nice person. You don't detect any lies in her words, nor any hidden intentions in her actions. She seems to simply want to be done with this ordeal, and appears likely to follow orders. Although, for all her words to the contrary, you continue catching her glancing at Markus admiringly, and you'd bet a fortune she wouldn't leave his side or do anything to hurt him. Some women just never learn, it seems...}
Tratain Friday December 7th, 2007 1:09:01 PM
Tratain says "Anyone know how long it is until dark? If Dorbun and his friends stayed here for weeks we should be safe for one night aswell. We'll spend the night here where theres some shelter and rest early in the morning and leave when everyones gotten their rest."
He says to his friends quietly "Keep an eye out for that Halfling, and also watch Markus as well as for any threats from without."
You can all judge that it is about mid-afternoon. Exact time might require a survival check, but all can judge generally.
Lumi-Juova (AC 28, HP 124/124) Friday December 7th, 2007 2:48:35 PM
Tratain's healing flows through his body, and Lumi bows. "My thanks, wunjo, and cleric of Tomi."
Lumi agrees that if this group was able to stay in the fortified area, then the Harmaa Ritari will be able to as well.
"If the monsters are more active at night, then I think we should change our hunting tactics to moving at night and resting during the day." Lumi thinks hard and continues. "It may be more difficult for the group to move, but certainly easier to rest."
the white liontaur scoops Markus' equipment into a pile and uses a length of his canvas tarp to fashion a bundle. tying a knot in the bundle, he hefts it and exclaims with satisfaction. "Markus can carry his own equipment with him so as not to burden anyone else. The good Dorbun can prrotect the grroup and Markus can have access if they get into dire straits."
Lumi awaits what the party will do and then helps out as best he may with his duties, be they marching or readying a defense.
Jova 70/70 HP 21 AC [Mage Armor, Darkvision Friday December 7th, 2007 5:21:58 PM
Jova moves over to the hydras leg and leans on it. He makes sure the prisoners see him do it. He also pats the leg in a loving manner, like a dogs head.
He was about to give Dorbin the what for, when Tratain did. That id scary, he was beginning to think exactly like his comrades. He did not feel good about taking the gear from the prisoners though. If they somehow got killed, the weight would be harder to carry now they were helpless.
Jova had been wondering sonmething for some time now, and he decided now was good as tome as any to ask.
"Tratain, Arien. I have a question about a couple of your spells. Tratain, your recall spell, and Arien your Teleport spell. Ywo questions to be sure. One, could we just transport the prisoners out of here with one opf the spells, then come immediately back?
"They said the fog would not allow them to leave, so this would get around that. Secondly, if we could do such a thing, why not transport ourselves out of here gor the night and return in the morning. To me that would be safest.

Turning to Jova. "If that is the case, I wonder why their mages did not teleport themselves out of here. If the dead one could control the mind of a paly, he should have been able to teleport at least himself out of here."
He looks at Celinda and asks her the question. "Why didn't you or the dead guy teleport yourselves out of here? I've seen you used a teleport spell, so have you tried to leave this place with one?"
Draax waits to here what she says.
Bedding Down Sunday December 9th, 2007 9:37:50 PM
Tratain makes the call, and the group decides to rest here for the night, possibly taking shelter in one of the abandoned buildings along the street.
Lumi collects Markus' things, ties them securely, and tosses them to the warrior, whose face reddens as he is effectively made into a pack animal for his own precious belongings.
Horvis, meanwhile, continues to guard the area in silence, keeping up his ruse of being a trained beast owned by the Knights.
Vedik takes two of the wands, and performs his fixative arts to bestow a few extra charges to them, replacing some of the spent magical reserves.
Jova brings up an interesting point: why shouldn't the Knights simply teleport away, then return at their leisure. Draax seconds the idea, and queries Celinda as to whether it has been tried.
"Of course we tried that," Celinda snaps. COmposing herself, she says more calmly, "My apologies. The city has taxed my nerves to no small extent.
"Yes, we did a few experiments. Before coming in, Gaebril tried to teleport from the forest back to a town he was familiar with. The magic failed completely. I can only surmise that the teleportation spell would not function to take us through the portal we used to enter this land.
"We also tried to teleport out of the city, which failed as well. As to that, I cannot say for sure whether the failure was due to the magic not working properly here, or due to our inability to otherwise leave Fae Skiemir.
"There is one important question, however. To make proper use of the spell, one must have studied a specific area sufficiently to teleport there. Otherwise, the spell could misfire. I don't know about you, but I for one wouldn't want to end up in a random location around here.
"THe spell I used a few minutes ago wasn't a teleportation, exactly. I used a spell called dimension door. It allows for short hops from one spot to another, but not longer travel such as a true teleportation."
Meanwhile, Monthor strikes up a conversation with Dorbun and Haveril regarding the city, its inhabitants, and anything else about which he can think to ask.
Haveril eagerly volunteers all he knows of the nearby areas of the city. "We've done plenty of exploring in the past few weeks, some beneficial, and some . . . ah . . . less so."
Clearing his throat, he withdraws one of his daggers, slowly and carefully, with his eyes on Monthor. He points it at the ground, and waits for Monthor's assent before continuing.
If Monthor (and anyone else nearby) lets him continue, he begins tracing lines in the dirt with the point of the dagger. "Roughly, we are here," he says as he draws a street and scratches each end to show the barricade. He marks the middle of the street with a small star and labels it "us."
"Now back this way, I assume the way you came from, is Devil's Corner." He draws an arrow pointing west and scrawls a name in the dirt.
"East of here, about a mile or so, is one of the outer gates of the city. Pretty big one, I guess it was one of the main entrances. That's where we came in, and Domi, Alemi, and anyone else willing, where we'll leave from.
"Last time we went, that be-damned fog clogged the gate and hardened so much we couldn't get through. Nothing Gaebril or Celinda did could clear it either."
He draws another arrow pointing south and labels it "really big black dragon." "Down here, maybe a half mile, is where we think this enormous black's lair is. He, or she, whatever, seems to be pretty active in the area. We've had to fight a bunch of its minions lately. Can you believe Gaebril actually wanted to attack it? He thought we could kill it and take over it's domain! 'If we can't leave, might as well rule something,' he said. Fool..."
Clearing his through, he continues sketching, this time drawing an arrow north and making some notations. "Now up here, maybe a mile, is a big green tower. We tried heading that way early on, got chased off by some demons. A few big ones with wings killed Hurn and Cristof, and we haven't been back."
He draws another arrow pointing northwest. "Up this way, dividing the devils and demons, we're pretty sure is a being called the Lich King. Easier exploring there, at least for us.
"Lot of zombies, ghouls, and the like. A few vampires and such. We were up that way maybe a week ago. Ran into a few vampire spawns. Markus and Dorbun made short work of one of them, but Gaebril did some magicky stuff to the other, kind of took it over or something.
"Anyway, he had that thing doing backflips for him. Literally, that is. Gaebril thought it was great fun. He finally got to questioning it, and it said it served the Lich King. Apparently, this Lich has been making plans to attack the demons, and trying to get the devils to back him. I think all this back-and-forth jockeying for position is the only thing kept us alive. It looks like we've found ourselves a little pocket of unclaimed land 'tween all these big powerhouses."
He tidies up his map a bit, making a few more notations here and there, then sits back, nods to himself, and cleans off the dagger. Sliding the blade back into his belt, he says, "There you have it. East sounds about right to me, and I say we don't even wait 'till morning."
Jova 70/70 HP 21 AC [Mage Armor, Darkvision Monday December 10th, 2007 2:17:16 PM
Jova crinkles his eyebrows as Celinda explains the problem of terleporting. Of a sudden, Jova bursts out laughing, holding his stomach in mockery at the joke. Composint himself he looks at the party.
"I still would like to hear from Tratain and Arien on the subject . You see this Gaebril fellow always seemed to be acting for his own interests. If I were him I would have told you all the same thing. Or else you wouldfbe begging at every turn to teleport out of here.
"As it were he had you trapped to do his bidding. Up intil the moment he really dneeded to leave, or he found his tresure. RThen poof, he leave you all here. I find it trully funny after all the deception and lies, you still have faith in him.
"Fellow Draax, I do sdoubt that it wouldwork as well. But I would like the posibility explored. It would make life much easier for us."
---OOC-Note to all. If the DM was hinting in his post that it isnt possible, I will take that. But I am not sure if that was the intent. It is why I am asking Tatain and Arien.

Vedik Monday December 10th, 2007 6:43:41 PM
Vedik nods at Lumi. "Yeah, seems like it."
He regards the map with interest. "Tell us more about the demons you fought. Can you draw a better map of the area up that way?"
Juliander Monday December 10th, 2007 7:27:29 PM
Muttering more to himself, but still aloud, "Demons? Devils?.... Lich king? and a great big black dragon." Looking around to his friends, "Um... are we sure that Fae Skimir isn't 'Hell' translated from some archaic language?" The bard looks exhasperated.
Monthor Monday December 10th, 2007 7:46:56 PM
:: Monthor nods at the ranger in approval as he hestiates with the knife. He then watches and listens as the Haveril draws his map and tells his tale. ::
" Well, here's my two copper's worth... Our goal is to get treasure. The dragon will likely have the most. Demons and such and going to be the most difficult to deal with. Me suggest we avoid them. That means, forget the green tower. Me okay with taking on undeads.. but me'd rather not until we're better prepared for them. Now, this power struggle between the undeads and the demons is interesting. Maybe we can fuel it a bit and get them to go to war. If we're lucky, the lich will bring in the devils and all three will take each other out... okay, not likely. But if they fight, them we can skulk around and steal their stuff... the dragon's lair will be the best protected... the demons are tough.. devils just as tough... undead.. toss up between the undeads and the dragon for me. But me'd bet that that fog that's been following us around has to do with one of them. Likely the lich... Maybe we're best going after the dragon hoard. "

Horvis Monday December 10th, 2007 10:10:45 PM
The cryohydra will move a head (or two) so that it can see the map being drawn by the prisoner. Horvis is trying to recollect which way his Find the Path spell was indicating and compare it what is drawn. Horvis will only act if the drawing and his companions' conclusions disagree with what he learned from the spell. If so, Horvis hopes that his ability to shift is imposing enough, and he assumes his normal centaur form. It would soon be time to shift, anyway.
Draax Monday December 10th, 2007 10:37:52 PM
Draax nods to Jova, "Good point. I just did not want our guys trying a spell that could cause them harm or misdirect them to someplace else. What you said about the dead mage could be true; he did not seem to care too much for his mates, so he might have kept quiet his ability to leave here." Draax does not really care about helping the other group get out of the city, but he keeps those thoughts to himself.
Tratain Tuesday December 11th, 2007 5:13:24 PM
Tratain listens to Haveril as he speaks and watches his drawing.
When he finishes drawing Tratain gathers everyone and says "Ok, heres the Plan. The gate out of the city is only a Mile or so from here, we are all going there together. This lets us do a couple things all at once. First off it allows us to make sure Dorbun, Haveril, Celinda, and Markus get out of this City, it also makes sure that we can still get out of the city while getting us familiar with the area around the gate. We will spend the night a Half Mile or a Mile away from the gate, I would rather take my chances with the Monsters outside than the ones in here for a night. Early tomorrow we'll re-enter the city, during the time when Haveril tells us the cities inhabitants seem to be resting. That way we might be able to sneak in while at least some of them are off guard. Haveril, I'd like for you to Draw us your map again with any other information you can remember when we get outside and camp, It might come in handy for us."
He continues "When we return to the City we'll head for the Green Tower like we planned. First off we know about how strong the opponent we're going to face there is. Taking on a Dragon isn't something you do without planning and information. This trip isn't solely about treasure for us either. Remember we were told that the Marilith is getting pretty powerful, so much that might be able to bring some of the other powers under its domain. Keeping this power struggle going is very important for keeping all the Evil in this place focused inward against each other rather than outward against the wold."
Once everyone is ready Tratain has Haveril and Dorbun direct the group towards the gate out of the City to find a nice camping spot a little ways outside the city.
Juliander Tuesday December 11th, 2007 6:35:23 PM
Prepared to leave for the evening along side his friends, "So... if we move to remove the marilith from the balance of power, would that be sufficient to maintain the balance in the struggle of evil on evil here?"

Looking a bit insulted, Celinda replies, "I did not say Gaebril was the only one trying to teleport. I made my own experiments as well. We may have been . . . a bit afraid of him, but I'm not exactly an insipid little girl, you know."
Haveril raises an eyebrow after listening to the discussion. "You all seem to know a good deal about this place. More than we did coming in, I'll give you that. But I like the plan, I do."
When Horvis shifts back, Haveril nearly jumps out of his skin. "Dear gods and lesser lords! You lot are just full of surprises..."
Markus takes a look at the taur and scowls, muttering under his breath, "A centaur? Fool woman should have let me keep fighting." Celinda, standing next to him, raises her hand and smacks him on the side of the head. "YOu've caused enough trouble, you jackass. Shut you're fat mouth before one of these good folk slices it off your face."
The group packs up as the pair bickers quietly. Heading east, you quickly climb over the barricade and move down the street at a quick trot. Haveril directs you. A few blocks east, a turn north. Another turn east, a turn south, then back east again. "Just avoiding the rough spots," he explains.
After a short while, you see a large, once-ornate gate before you. Standing over 20 feet tall and nearly as wide, it's enormous bronze doors lay on the ground inside the wall, battered and broken. the marble arch of the gate looks once to have been carved with various figures, though most are dulled or broken off by now.
The thick fog laps around your heads, a few long tendrils creeping toward the gate as if to block your exit.
At the last moment, the fog quivers, as if contemplating the group's path, then slowly withraws, leaving the gate open. Ahead of you lies a short expanse of prairie, most of the grass burnt away as if a huge fireball had recently torched the land.
A few hundred paces after the gate lies the start of the forest.
If you head in and make a camp, give me watch details, precautions, etc.

He continues "I'd like at least one person on each watch to be able to see in the Dark, also Haveril can you Draw those maps for us now. "One good thing, meeting with these folk has at least shown us more about our enemy, and our escape route."
"I will take first watch with Draax as well. I am not a morning person, so would be best if I slept then."

Using his hunting skills quickly, (Spot:nat 1!, Listen:21) the white tiger-striped wemic supports the movement of the Gray Knights and the others in leaving the ruined city. Lumi's eyes widen at the tendrils, and then even more when they allow the group to leave. "Remembering others and not being selfish seems to be the key for escaping the trap. Even Markus must be not heartless, or the City would not have let us leave.", the large Lumi observes.
Lumi nods at Tratain's wisdom and searches for a campsite that is away from the city yet still defensable (Survival:21). He sets up his canvas tent and starts a small, smokeless fire for cooking. "I can see in the dark, and I'll take the 3rd Watch if you will."
The evening around the campfire, Lumi will tell tales of his far-away Ice Vien. He tries to emphasize the teamwork necessary to survive in the harsh environment and how supporting others and being supported by them is very beneficial for everyone. (He hopes that the tales will inspire the other group)

Monthor plunks himself down and instantly starts to dose. He knows that he'll be waken up when it's his turn on watch. And he really doesn't care wish watch he's on. Soon... the dwarf starts to snore.. { good night Monthor...}
Rest for the Weary Wednesday December 12th, 2007 8:36:30 PM
[Arien - no posts since last Thursday, everything okay?]
Going a short way into the woods, you find a cluster of rather large trees that seems as good a place as any to bed down.
As the Knights go about the various tasks of cooking, cleaning gear, preparing beds, and so on, Dorbun pulls Monthor and Vedik a few paces aside.
Monthor and Vedik Highlight to display spoiler: {After you walk a short way, Dorbun says in a hushed voice, "Domi forgive my prejudices, but I trust some good dwarf-sense over any others. Not that your friends aren't honorable folk, but you understand...
"Anyway, if I have your leave, I'd like to lead this rabble out in the morning. The gate isn't far from here, and I think I can have them safe in a few hours travel.
"But first, don't be trusting that Markus tonight. I'd keep someone on him if I were you. And you might want to reconsider letting him have that pretty little sword back. Hav and Celinda and I can handle what little trouble there is out here, but that man . . . who in Domi's name knows what he'll try first chance he gets?
"Choice is yours, I'll deal with my fate either way. Just thought I'd mention it."}
After a short conversation, Dorbun strolls back to the campsite, eyeing Markus with an angry glare.
Celinda collects some rations, and mixes them together with a few herbs she removes from the folds of her robes. In no time at all, she's whipped up a fine smelling concoction, and offers it to anyone who looks hungry, taking a few bites first herself.
When watches are discussed, Haveril chimes in, "You've no reason to trust me, but I can hold my own on a watch, I can. Just tell me when to take it."
Markus sulks against one of the trees, staring at the bundle holding his weapons and gear, and ignores any conversation near him.
As night rolls in, some Knights sleep and some start their watches. Every so often, noises are heard in the woods, though they seem to come from ordinary, nocturnal animals.
Thankfully, the night passes uneventfully, and dawn comes early, bringing a heavy mist and a wet dew that soaks through the thickest of robes and blankets. The sky is grey and overcast, and even the trees seem to sag in the pale morning light.
Haveril hands over a map to Tratain, scrawled on a strip of parchment. It seems to show a path from the east gate to the green tower.
"Not my best work, but it'll do," he says. Looking at the sky, he continues, "Get in early, and move fast. You might make it just fine. This time of morning, we'd just be bedding down, and usually got at least an hour or two of unbothered sleep."
Looking pointedly at Monthor and Vedik, Dorbun asks, "Well then? How shall I be tasked?"
[I'll get an actual map out soon, hopefully tonight, but maybe tomorrow]
Map Wednesday December 12th, 2007 8:42:54 PM
On second thought, it may be easier to simply "follow the map" theoretically. You can assume it depicts streets, obstructions, etc. and gives sufficient distance and direction to remove the need for survival or other rolls.
Monthor Wednesday December 12th, 2007 8:50:36 PM
During the night, Monthor relays to Tratain Dorbun's suggestions.
" If the paladin suggests that we keep the snot nose's blade. Who are we to argue? They'll likely be safer without having to worry about him sticking that sword in their back anyway... We can either keep it or give it to Dorbun. Me say we keep it. Just to annoy him. "

When the planning begins, Horvis will contribute what he can.
"Why not cast my spell, and between that and the map we can get to our target as quickly as possible. No distractions, either."
The centaur looks around at his companions, trying to determine how they are taking his advice.
"If you want, I can try to shift into a form that is capable of flight and carry one or two of you."
Arien (hp 60/60) AC 21 (Mage Armor) Thursday December 13th, 2007 5:47:45 AM
"Well Monthor, I could identify the items if you wish, OR I could memorize a flashy yet devastatingly powerful spell, your choice." Arien continues in a bantering tone; "Personally I would go with the flashy destructive spell as its most likely to help out more in the long run at this point."
After the night passes Arien spends some time picking out and re-memorizing spells. After he is done the elven mage will help with whatever preparations need to be done to finish so that the party can move out.
Tratain Thursday December 13th, 2007 10:47:12 AM
Tratain tells Monthor "I've still got his sword in my Haversack, I don't think we'll return it given Dorbuns warning. I was debating on whether or not to keep it, I don't really trust him. We'll just keep it. Have Dorbun escort his companions out of here when we leave."
Before the group beds down for the Night Tratain asks Draax for his Cold Iron Longsword and casts Greater Magic Weapon on it. And says "Are you going to use this Draax or can I hold onto it for a bit?"
In the morning he continues "Once inside we'll Follow Haverils Map. Save your spell for now Horvis, the quickest way to the tower may not be the safest. I'd Like as much of the group to have delay poison before we go as we can, I can provide 3. We'll try and find an empty building near the tower to cast our prepatory spells. I'd like anything that will last an hour or more done before we enter. We'll give out the Deathwards and Stoneskins and such then. Arien I'd like you to use your Veil spell do disguise us as something from th Mariliths Home Plane, something strong enough most things will leave us alone, but not stronger than the Marilith. Is there something may equilly strong or just a tad bit weaker than it? Depending on how many Minions it has we can kill it and baring running into anything with True seeing we can pretend to have taken over for just long enough to grab whatever we can and make out exit. I'll cast tongues on Juliander and Myself, I'll cast it on a second person If you can cast it yourself. Juliander it'll be up to you though to try and bluff out way through first before we start fighting."
Vedik Thursday December 13th, 2007 12:27:45 PM
Vedik speaks quietly to Monthor and Tratain. "If we make Dorbun responsible for the group of them, he is free to take or not take their gear as he wishes. I don't want the warrior giving him trouble, that is for sure.
I will say this. My concern regarding stripping them of their gear was due to them being unable to defend themselves in the city. Now that we are out, if Dorbun wishes to pass judgement upon them and claim their gear, or reward it to us, I will not protest."
Jova 70/70 HP 21 AC [Mage Armor, Darkvision] Thursday December 13th, 2007 3:16:43 PM
Jova rolls out of bed in the morning very refreshed. Using the rod of extens=ion he casts the mage armor, and darkvision upon ghimself. This allows for both to last the full day.
He then moves to Ariens side, hoping to hear his ideas on the extraplanar creatures they would becone.
"I do have a bit of talent in acting. So when you do your veil spell, tell me what IU an supposed to be, and I shall act accordingly. I can even go overboared if needed." He smiles widely at the thought.
Tratain (2nd) Thursday December 13th, 2007 4:41:48 PM
Tratain says to Vedik and Monthor "Markus's sword we're keeping, I don't trust him enough to give it back to him. Most likely what'll happen if he has it is he starts a fight and it'll probably be Celinda who gets hurt since she won't just let him be. Don't let him put any of his armor or other gear on either. It'll keep him from being dumb. If he unarmed and unarmored he will be less likely to push his luck with Dorbun."

Seeing that they will soon be parting company, Draax turns to Dorbun and says, "Once on the other side, if you still want to devote you life to destroying evil; you should seek out the 'Sons of Dread'. You will do more good by destroy the evil that fights against good than you would do here fighting evil that is fighting evil. Just something for you to think about"

"Mariliths are typically the second most powerful type of demon known. Below them in terms of power come the Nalfeshnees and before them the Glabrezu. I can disguise as these creatures but be aware that these are huge creatures and that we must act the part in case we are being spied upon. If you want to merely go largish creatures then the Vrocks and the Hezrous are the most powerful apart from the Marilith of course." Arien finishes his speech about the different type of devils and waits for a response from Tratain.
Tratain Friday December 14th, 2007 7:23:08 AM
Tratain thinks for a moment and says "Something closer to our own size would be best. We won't be able to pass for creatures that big very well, something will notice. Actually something not so powerful might be best. Since everything in this city is trying to kill everything else impersonating something low on the food chain probably would be safest."

Ready for Battle Sunday December 16th, 2007 8:09:05 PM
[sorry for the lack of posting. Work went absolutely crazy and things fell apart everywhere else.]
Monthor discusses with Tratain what Dorbun first spoke of. Meanwhile, Lumi tells his tails of the frozen lands. Celinda and Haveril sit enrapt, taking in every word with great enjoyment. Dorbun half listens, but seems to be preoccupied with watching the woods around the camp, while Markus sulks against his tree, barely raising his head.
While the group plans, Horvis again offers his pathfinding abilities. Arien discusses what spells he might memorize, stating his preference for inflicting pain on his enemies.
Vedik seems to agree with Monthor and Tratain on the newcomers' fate, and Tratain orders them sent away once the Knights head for the city.
Tratain lays out a preliminary plan for preparation and infiltration of the demon's lair.
Jova awakes and sits by Arien, discussing his upcoming role of diplomatic demon with no small amount of delight evident in his eyes.
Draax begins his morning preparations while talking to Dorbun. The dwarf listens intently, then repeats the name a few times, as if commiting it to memory. "If for no other reason, I will seek them out because of the kindness you and your friends have done me. If they are as evil as you say, I will make them suffer for it. Thank you, brother."
He clasps Draax's hand, then turns and starts barking orders to Haveril and Celinda, pushing them to move quickly and prepare to march out. Walking over to Markus - who is still sitting at his tree - he gives him a swift kick to the shin. "Get up, you miserable loafer. I said I'd get you out of here. I didn't say I'd actually carry you. Go help your woman clean the cookpots, then grab as big a load of gear as ye can and start moving. Stay right in front of me, now."
Juliander, too, prepares for a morning of acting and deception, casting the proper spells on himself as he readies to march.
The Knights finish their preparatory spellcasting, make some final adjustments to various pieces of armor, and all seems ready.
Dorbun lines up his charges, placing Markus in front, followed by Celinda, with Haveril a half dozen paces behind her, his bow at the ready.
The dwarf walks over to the Knights. He stops in front of each of you, clasping hands and thanking you each in turn. At the end, he says, "I may not ever be able to repay you for your help, and by Domi, I'm humble enough to admit it. For what it's worth, I can give you at least a small token of my gratitude."
He passes out a number of small pieces of parchment. "If you ever come across one of my brothers bearing this emblem," he pats the eagle on his shield, "show him this here letter. It should be enough to get you whatever help he can provide."
He bows once more, then stalks back to his companions without another word. Giving Markus another kick, he points into the woods and starts marching, the others following behind.
Anyone who opens and reads the letter Highlight to display spoiler: {It reads:
The bearer of this letter saved my life, at great peril to himself and in the darkest lair of evil. Extend unto him every courtesy you are able, defend him with your life and honor, and treat him as you would your brother in arms.
Yours in the Quest and the Light,
Dorbun al Bazeer Maktorum Lord Captain General Golden Eagles Brigade}
[OOC: I don't know what the upcoming changes mean for us. For now, let's just proceed with business as usual.]
Tratain Monday December 17th, 2007 12:04:53 PM
Tratain says to Dorbun "I'm glad that we could help. Look us up sometime aswell, we can share an ale or two under more pleasant circumstances. Also, if you should come across your brothers in arms let them know that if they need assistance with anything and we are near to not hesitate to ask."
Once everyone is ready to go Tratain leads the party back into the city, following the Map made by Haveril towards the Mariliths Tower.
Vedik Monday December 17th, 2007 12:35:44 PM
Vedik finishes his morning routine, and parts with Dorbun, giving him a respectful nod. "Travel safe, and keep them in order brother."
Monthor d20=16 d20=17 Monday December 17th, 2007 2:11:07 PM
Before moving along, Monthor checks in with Tratain for his daily Magic Weapon and Magic Vestment ( armor? ) spell.
Before Dorbun leaves, Monthor approches the paladin and takes out a tin cup from his mess kit. He then activates his Open Bar Seal.( It is a role-playing Seal only. Activation of this will instantly produce one pint of your choice of alcoholic beverage.) and creates a pint of strong dwaven ale. He hands it over to Dorbun. " Drink me new brother. If ye needs the Knights, call upon us and we will be there. "
Monthor falls in line with the rest of the party and follows Tratain's directions. ( spot 16, listen 17)

Back to the City Monday December 17th, 2007 9:18:32 PM
Vedik and Monthor give their respects to Dorbun. The dwarf stops his routine and eagerly takes a swig of Monthor's ale. Wiping his mouth, he sighs. "Ahh. Domi forgive me, but there are some vices that just shouldn't be avoided, I always say." Clapping Monthor on the shoulder, he returns to his companions and moves them out.
Jova bids farewell to Dorbun as well, causing the dwarf's face to redden slightly at the open mention of his position.
Lumi carefully folds his letter and tucks it away for safekeeping.
The Knights appearing ready, Tratain orders the march, and soon enough you find yourselves approaching the broad eastern gate. The now-familiar, thick fog sits heavily just inside the walls. As you approach, it parts itself, almost seeming to beckon you in.
Oddly, the city seems a bit quieter than it did the day before. The errant noises you first heard are not present right now, and you fail to catch even the slightest movements in the shadows of the ramshackle buildings. Even the fog seems thinner and lighter in places, allowing some of the pale, grey morning light to seep through onto the streets.
Moving quickly (I assume), you head north as Haveril's map indicates. After about a half mile, the road ends in a large blockage of rubble, and you turn west. The path continues, mainly north and west, with a few trips out of the way to avoid roadblocks, and sometimes for no apparent reason. Haveril may have been unsure of his directions, or he may have known of some peril to avoid.
In either case, you soon find yourselves traveling north again along a broad thoroughfare, having walked about a mile and a half from the gate.
The fog seems to be hardening above you. As you walk, you begin to hear distant sounds again, as if the city is awakening to a new day of horror.
Something howls in the distance. Not quite animal, you wonder exactly what, or who, is giving voice to the eery sound.
To the southwest, you hear distant sounds of battle. Metal clanging on metal, inhuman screams piercing the morning haze.
As if from nowhere, you suddenly stop dead in your tracks. Ahead of you is the largest intact structure you've seen since entering the city. An enormous, jade-green tower, perfectly round, rises over a hundred feet into the air, its pinnacle completely hidden by the fog, which swirls around the tower-top as if the upper half of a tornado had somehow made its home there.
Yellow-green streaks of light flash among the fog clouds above as the mist changes hues from grey, to green, to red and back again.
You stand in the street, two city blocks from the tower.

When the group can see the tower clearly Tratain ushers the group inside a nearby building and begins casting long term protection spells.
He says "Arien, the Veil spell if you please. Something out own size would be best, it'll be harder to impersonate creatures larger than ourselves. Juliander and Jova, you two will need to try and talk our way past anything that tries to stop us. Don't make eye contact with anything bigger than us and try and keep the talking to a minimum so they don't hear us speaking common and know somethings up."
Tratain casts Delay Poison on Arien, Jova and Juliander. Tratain casts Extended Tongues on Jova and Himself.
Once everyone is ready he leads the group towards and into the tower.

On silent, cat-like feet (Move Silent:30), Lumi moves into the city with the other Harmaa Ritari. He keeps his bastard sword sheathed to hide its light, and holds onto his handaxe in the left hand.
The big Hezrou-wemic keeps nervously glancing at the swirling mists, fearing the trap that they represent. Occasionally he mumbles "...helping other people" or "not for myself" as if to remind the hunter of their ultimate purpose.
The quiet and then the sounds of fighting gladden his heart, and the Hezrou smiles at the little babaus. "Tensions are running high and it sounds like the undead and demons are fighting each other. This gives us opportunity to finish this hunt!"
And then the tall, green tower surrounded by the swirling mist is in front of them. Lumi turns to look at Tratain-Babau and the Hezrou's face is worried. "The Sage said that this demon may be getting powerful enough to escape the mists. I think the colors across the mists are her attempts at breaking out. If we are quick, we may be able to take her unawares and in a weakened condition."
And looking at the other side of the mountain, Lumi continues glumly. "And if we take too much time, she may already break the mist and gain too much power to stop."

The Tower of Xanaphelas Tuesday December 18th, 2007 7:48:42 PM
When the Knights stop, Draax begins surveying the area for any threats. He doesn't hear anything other than the distant noises the group has been hearing for a few minutes, nor does his eye catch anything other than decrepit buildings.
Tratain pushes the group into a small stone house nearby and begins casting spells and doling out assignments.
Horvis, too, casts some spells on himself, while Vedik keeps an eye out for trouble.
Arien disguises the party as Hezrous and Babaus, while Monthor waits, ready to enter battle again.
Lumi comments on the fog surrounding the tower, and his guess as to the meaning of the odd coloration and ocassional sparks of lightning in the cloud.
Once preparations are finished, the Knights walk out of the house. To any spying eyes, it appears that a gang of demons is marching down the street, directly toward the tall green tower.
Hezrous and Babaus stride toward the tower. Closing the distance, you see that the walls appear entirely smooth, as if carved from one massive green block. There are no windows. A solitary doorway opens to the street.
The wide, doorless entryway stands 10 feet wide and 15 feet high, a mouth into darkness.
As the Knights approach, a raspy voice calls out, "Identify, underlings. And quickly."
Looking upward to follow the sound of the voice, you see a gigantic, spiderlike being crawling slowly around the tower, revealing itself as it speaks. It's hard-shelled skin is jet black, with streaks of red running down its six legs and along its abdomen. A scorpionlike black tail hangs from its hindquarters, dragging along the tower's wall, but looking ready to strike at a moment's notice. Two long, arm-like appendages jut forth from its front section, ending in razorlike talons.
It has deep, dark red eyes that start into you, while it's pincered mouth works to speak.
"Maybe we should eat them sister..." another voice begins.
Looking to your left, you behold another such creature crawling along the tower from the other side.
"Not yet, sister. Let us see if they are important first."
"But they look tasssssty... Are you tasssssty, little ones?"
"We hunt later. You know the queen's command."
"Queen would never know."
"She knows all, sister! Quiet! Let the minions answer."
Both . . . things . . . stop moving and watch you intently. They stand sideways on the tower wall, about 20 feet above the ground.

DM addendum Tuesday December 18th, 2007 10:18:48 PM
Arien, what is the will DC for the veil spell?
(I'm not applying it for the turn I just posted but I want to have it just in case)
Horvis Tuesday December 18th, 2007 10:50:37 PM
The centaur does his best to cringe and scrape like the minor demon whose form he is wearing. Hopefully the things do not require everyone to speak since Horvis cannot speak the tongue of demons.
While Juliander speaks, Horvis studies the surrounding areas. From the looks of things, something would be needed to remove the spider-things height advantage.
Lumi-Juova (Viel) d20+14=16 Tuesday December 18th, 2007 11:05:11 PM
The Hezrou-wemic attempts to look untinterested in where it is going, but very interested in not getting eaten. Pretending to be like a juvenile male when confronted by a pride of females, he ducks his head to avoid eye contact and shuffles a little away from the spider-demons.
Trying to be unobtrusive, he listens for any scrape (Listen:16)
Effects Endure Elements 24 hours
(ooc: I'm going to keep DMing and so will be authorized to have 2 PCs. I'm leaning towards only keeping one character (Bloodpack), though I'm really loving this game too.)
Draax (AC 31, HP 148/148) - Endure Elements d20+7=25 d20+3=13 d20+3=22 Tuesday December 18th, 2007 11:13:51 PM
Draax remains silent while he listens to Juliander and the spider demons talk. Not sure how a demon should act, he decides to shift his feet in an impatient manner while they wait.

Jova 70/70 HP 21 AC [Mage Armor, Darkvision] d20+21=39 Wednesday December 19th, 2007 1:40:10 AM
Jova follows his fellows to their destination. He is iimpressed by Ariens spell, and the way they all look now. He thinks they seem more terrifying than usual.
As Juliander starts to speak, his fellows all take the calm stance. Jova has the dispel wand in one hand, which he tries to hide. Since no 'demon' seems to be leader, a wandering pack if you will, Jova takes on the bothersome role.
"Yak, Yak yak." Jove repeats the phrase walking around impstiently. He never gets too close to the spider types, but he does work at distracting them. He makes sure to bump into each of his pack mates, reating the phrase often.
[Bluff Check 39]
OOOOOOC--Maybe this should be handled through email. I seen Monthor schose to stay in this game. SteveK chose the Bloodpack. Where does everyone el;se stand. I want to stay, I like this character, but I really like the players, and love the DM. DM works very hard to make this enjoyable I thank you. So chime in guys, lets see if this game will hold up.
Arien (hp 60/60) AC 21 (Mage Armor, Veil) d20+25=31 Wednesday December 19th, 2007 2:30:29 AM
Arien eyes the spider demons warily knowing their chaotic nature they might just decide to eat one or two lesser demons anyway. Arien scratches a pretend itch idly trying to pass for a bored Babau in front of the two creatures. If they get past without a fight and the mage is fairly certain that they won't be overheard he will relate the information about spider demons.
((Knowledge: The Planes: 31, Veil DC will be 24 Will))
Vedik (AC 29 137/137 HP) *Wings* M. Vest x2, GMW-Ex, Delay Poison-Ex Wednesday December 19th, 2007 7:38:37 AM
Not really familiar with demon lore, the old dwarf follows Arien's lead and attempts to look bored. He shuffles uncomfortably at the mention of being tasty, figuring these demons to be fairly powerful and with enough authority at this tower to be worth avoiding a fight with.
OOC: I'd like to stay here. Is there some place we have to email or inform people of our intention?
Monthor d20=12 d20=17 d20=14 Wednesday December 19th, 2007 7:38:59 AM
Monthor's grip tightens on his axe and waits to see what the others will do. He is very mindfull that the demons may attack and prepares accordingly ( prepared action. Attacks if a demon attacks first).

Tratain HP 119/119 AC 28 Tongues; Ring of Counterspells:Greater Dispel Magic;Magic Vestment Wednesday December 19th, 2007 4:47:39 PM
Tratain sits back and waits to see if Jova and Juliander are able to get the party past the two Demons, he is ready to act just incase things go wrong.
At the Tower Door d20+16=36 d20+16=29 d20+16=36 d20+16=20 Wednesday December 19th, 2007 8:40:49 PM
Horvis, Monthor and Tratain stand guard, eyeing the spiders and the tower, mentally preparing for possible combat.
Lumi bows his head subserviently, while Draax shifts back and forth, seeming ready to be on with whatever he is about.
Arien and Vedik sigh with boredom. This is, after all, just part of a lesser demon's day.
Juliander takes the lead and announces the team's intentions to the spiders. The spiders listen, the second-comer rising a bit on its segmented legs.
The first speaks, "Yesssss. Hunting would be nice, it would."
The second responds, "It talkssss unright!"
"You are tired, sister..."
"No! Surely we can eat a few. Queen doessssn't need all to carry a message."
"And you want to test Her?"
"Thisssss one is a wrong one, sister!"
Jova, meanwhile, walks to and fro, bumping and prodding his companions as if tired of the conversation and ready to move. The spider demons pause to watch.
The second speaks again, "That one is leader?"
The first, "A bit small to lead those." Pointing a pincer at Lumi and Horvis.
"It ignoressss you sister."
"Minion wants to please Queen, not ussss."
Pausing again, the demons look the Knights over once more. The first takes a few steps backward and says, "Come, sister. We will hunt awhile." With that, it slowly dematerializes, as if its body were winking out of existence a few particles at a time.
The second spider stays a moment, it's glowing red eyes focusing on Juliander.
"Hunt...yessss. This becomes boring." Looking at Jova, it nods its bulky head toward Juliander and says, "Keep that one in line, leader. It feels unright.
"Lucky minions, you. Sister and I not eat you now. Maybe we eat you later?"
Taking a slow step back, it too begins to disappear. As it's body fades from the very air, you hear a final whispered, "eaaattttt yooooouuuuuu........."
You again find yourselves alone, standing before the tower entrance. Peering in, the entranceway looks to be a half-circle tunnel, about 10 feet long, that opens into a wide, round room that appears to be empty. It's circular walls extend far beyond your limited range of sight, and the room is poorly lit by a few ensconced torches.
Horvis Wednesday December 19th, 2007 11:14:50 PM
The centaur in demon guise leans over and whispers to Lumi-Juova, "I don't think that they're really gone ... can you still smell them?"
Horvis will take his normal position in the marching once they decide to go inside. Having witnessed the way that the spider-demons simply faded from sight, the shifter wonders if there are other unseen hazards within the room ahead. The only way that he could tell would be to shift into a form that has a keen noise but he doesn't know how the illusion would react to that.
Vedik (AC 29 137/137 HP) *Wings* M. Vest x2, GMW-Ex, Delay Poison-Ex d20+7=18 d20+7=14 Thursday December 20th, 2007 9:51:18 AM
Vedik continues to follow the group, not really sure how to proceed. He has little experience with demons beyond killing them, so he keeps his mouth shut and eyes open, not wanting to blunder into exposing their ruse.

Arien (hp 60/60) AC 21 (Mage Armor, Veil) Thursday December 20th, 2007 10:28:10 AM
Arien continues to act the part of a demon as the party continues forwards. As they walk the elven mage keeps his eyes out for likely places that other demons might lurk.
Monthor d20=11 d20=14 Thursday December 20th, 2007 10:41:42 AM
... Keeps his mouth shut and follows the others. He keeps an eye ( spot 11) and an ear ( listen 14) out for danger.
Readied action- attack anything that looks like it's going to attack the party.

Tratain HP 119/119 AC 28 Tongues; Ring of Counterspells:Greater Dispel Magic;Magic Vestment Thursday December 20th, 2007 4:41:20 PM
Tratain says "lets be about it."
When the group is out of earshot of any Demons Tratain says "Arien, Try and steer us clear of any Demons that might be able to just see through the Veil spell. And Good Job Juliander and Jova getting us past those spider Demons. Hopefully we can avoid having to fight the whole tower."
Draax (AC 31, HP 148/148) - Endure Elements d20+7=26 d20+3=23 Thursday December 20th, 2007 4:54:53 PM
Up until the spiders left, Draax was not to sure that the spell would hide their identities from the demons. Feeling a little more secure with spell, he still stays alert as the group walks through the entryway.

Jova 70/70 HP 21 AC [Mage Armor, Darkvision] d20+21=32 Thursday December 20th, 2007 5:38:09 PM
Whether the ruse of acting the demented demon had worked or not, would never be known. what was known wwas it was not immediately apparaent they would see their enemy.. Therefore Jova continues the act of a deranged demon.
"Yak, yak, yak." A sound, phrase, or muttering keeps spewing forth. Oddly enough when he gets fr=urther fron Tratain the gibbering gets worse. Along that pattern he walks near Tratain.

Into the Tower Thursday December 20th, 2007 11:34:12 PM
After the demons seem to disappear, the Knights enter the tower. (I assume from the posts, it isn't specifically mentioned, so correct me if you are staying outside for any reason)
You walk down the tunnel, some whispering warnings, some continuing the demonic ruse, and others simply watching warily for any dangers.
No one sees or hears anything of much import. After passing the short entry tunnel, you find yourselves in a large, circular room.
The room itself is approximately 120 feet in diameter. A few torches shed dim light from their wall sconces around the perimeter. The floors, walls and ceiling (which is almost 50 feet high) are all made of smooth, greenish-grey stone.
Aside from a few bits of dust and dirt likely blown in from the street, the room seems tidily kept. You hear not a sound, aside from the ocassional sputter of a torch, and see nothing moving in the room.
Across from you, along the far wall, is a staircase. The bannerless stair begins at the floor and hugs the wall as it rises, nearly circling the room. At its top, near the ceiling, is a narrow platform with a large, ornate wooden door.
[I won't be able to get a map out until this weekend. You are standing at the west end of a 120' circular room. The east end, directly across, is where the stairway starts.]

(ooc: sorry for missing post, stomach flu struck)
The Wemic-Hezrou moves into the tower. Not hearing the whispered thought of Horvis until too late, he misses the chance to detect the spider-demons by natural means.
As he waits until he gets the stoneskin spell, he carefully casts about with his senses, trying to see if there are any other invisible creaatures or unusual stone formations. (Listen: 28, Spot: 19, Survival: 19)
