Into the City

DM Jan
Thursday December 6th, 2007 1:18:26 AM

Dawn arrives, coating the grass with ice-cold dew, and the windows with condensation.
The guards have got a good night's sleep, the elves, needing no sleep whatsoever, have been practicing all night.

Both camp and castle cookhouse has bread, hot porridge and honey available for those who want it.

It's time to move out. Emerald City awaits.

Athalorn
Thursday December 6th, 2007 1:58:58 AM

The druid wakes to a cold forest before dawn, anxiety unsettling his sleep. He prays to the forest as tendrils of light begin to tenderly brush the canopy of the magnificent Culvercloves. Bidding farewell to the many Fey who play and rest in the increasingly noisy grove, and entrusting its security to them, he calls on Packsister, who bounds from the forest to meet him at the trail leading to the tower. As he leaves, silent with nerves, Glannath flies down to rest on his shoulder. "Ah, my oldest friend." He smooths the ancient eagle's feathers with a gentle hand." Glannath looks at him, almost pensively, then takes again to the air. Was that a last farewell?

At the tower, Athalorn greets the elves and soldiers that prepare, and helps himself to a warm breakfast, saying little, and leaving Packsister to hunt her own breakfast on the fringes of the wood.

Once finished, he readies his spear, and readies to leave with the others.

Falin
Thursday December 6th, 2007 3:28:22 AM

As the condensation on the grass evaporates and forms rivulets of fog along the ground Falin walks out into the forest for one last moment of quite before the coming storm. He moves to a small circlet of trees and removes his boots as he kneels down. Never being a particularly religious elf Falin begins praying in an awkward fashion to whoever is listening.

After a few moments of embarrassedly trying to start he instead takes his bow from his back and begins the ritual of making sure it is in good working order. His hands lovingly travel across the ironwood bow. He knows every inch of that bow as if it were an extension of his very being. "Never have you let me down," he says to his bow. "I was once told that as long as you fire true that I would not fall." He muses for a second, "I think that it goes both ways don't you. If I fall of course you would not fire true."

After working on his bow for a while he goes back to the castle and gets a small portion of food, check on the other elves, and prepare for the journey.

Thursday December 6th, 2007 12:54:47 PM

The hand of Domi rises early, preps spells and packs up the new gear once it arrives from the Catacombs. He stretches his body, making it more flexible for the upcoming dragon battle. He can't rid his mind of the trance like dreams he had that evening; dragons and Emeralds lying dead in a forest cave.
He will eat a full breakfast, planning to remove his ring of Sustenance when his new ring arrives.

(When it arrives, his new gear will be donned and his old will be packed. I will note what is new and not.)

Spell List to follow... ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL BE APPRECIATED!! :)

The previous night Lian will have cast Endure Elements and two Continual Flames on coppers. (Materials removed from PC sheet.)

Brother Bertram
Thursday December 6th, 2007 2:59:44 PM

Bertram prepares to go, rubbing his gnarled fingers as the sharp, cold air begins to work into them. He makes one last inventory of his supplies and decides he is ready to go. He wolfs down as much food as he can, just in case things go badly later. Old habits die hard..

Lian
Thursday December 6th, 2007 3:09:47 PM

"Remember, we have those Resurrections too!" Reminds the hand. "I am still holding the cure moderate wands and ointments and last Meditation Incense we should use prior to moving out. I also have that wand of Bull Strength."

Athalorn
Thursday December 6th, 2007 5:53:35 PM

"Lian, do you want me to take any wands or items? I feel your strength will be in the fight."

K'Nara
Thursday December 6th, 2007 6:30:02 PM

K'Nara hugs Gunther as tightly as she can before answering him.

"My father was a warrior," she tells him, "And he always used to tell me that there is no shame in admitting to a weakness--only in refusing to deal with it. Sometimes you can overcome a weakness...sometimes you can only learn to accommodate it." Her hazel eyes study his face...his beloved, battle-scarred, loving face.

"We are both of us mortal, Gunther," K'Nara says, "Which means--given our positions as Emerald Dragons--we both have a bigger-than-normal chance of being permanently injured, killed and/or parted under traumatic circumstances. But whatever may happen, tia shaer taraes, always remember our time together and know that I love you. Nothing can ever take that away." The chestnut-maned blade singer kisses him but cannot stay abed any longer, as the hour for her training is nigh and she must complete that before overseeing the last minute details of leaving on their upcoming mission.

After her daily workout is done (and a quick bath), the leader of the Emerald Dragons gets a report from Bertram about the guards that are willing to help the group and from Falin (to whom the elven warriors from the village have reported, right?) She lets all the volunteers know that there is likely going to be a very deadly encounter with the three dragons and offers the opportunity for anyone who wants to do so to opt out of coming along.

Then she checks up on her mount--Poki is a fine horse...not specifically bred to be a warhorse, but a hardy animal nonetheless. However, she sees that this mission will likely be one of his last. Poki wasn't as old as the faithful Merlot had been--but only by a matter of a few years. The horse's service to her deserved to be rewarded by turning him out to stud. She'd have to see about that...after the problem of the three chromatic dragons was settled.

"Everyone ready?" she asks the group. "Once we got everything in place, we can move out!" K'Nara makes sure that Olana and Milo take the point and then heads out on a mission that she fervently hope that Gunther's anxiety does not prove to be prophetic about.

Milo
Thursday December 6th, 2007 9:22:58 PM

Milo perks up at breakfast, smiling the while, and whistling while he isn't eating. Turning to Olana, "I'd be happy to help you manage your cash... I see to have a way with coin.. or it with me... or perhaps a bit of both." Anyhow... just say the word dearest.

Gunther
Friday December 7th, 2007 12:03:35 AM

The warrior watches gratefully as K'nara turns to do her morning workout...at least she can't see the tears forming in his eyes. Heading to his cat enclosure, Gunther does a light training schedule just to get his thoughts back in line. He smiles as the dire lioness bats at him playfully, nearly taking his head off. Such power! Still, this was not a battle for kitties. Sighing he leads the lioness back to her habitat. Finding the minotaur grounds keeper, Gunther asks that the kitties be tended to. If at all possible he asks that one of the elves with ranger or druidic tendencies watch over them so that both Thaeri and Delilah will be able to roam the grounds while he is gone.

Returning to the Tower Gunther eats a hearty breakfast. He is determined to get rid of the worrisome thoughts that dog him. After all, everything is going to be just fine...yes, just fine.

Olana
Friday December 7th, 2007 1:09:59 AM

Olana chuckles and gives Milo a hug that lingers a beat or two longer than usual, telling him that underneath it all she's probably tensed up about the day ahead. She;s hardly eaten a thing.
"Actually, I think I spent it all. I got some new gloves," she tells him, " and to heck with the expense. Hopefully they'll improve my aim."

She'd also joined Falin's team earlier, too, as they went through archery drills. Practice made perfect.

((OOC - Folks, I've managed to dig up an old map of town that I did for one of our modules many moons ago. It's not brilliant, and if anyone has anything further up to date, please make me aware of it then I can adjust the geog. accordingly. Anyway - links to that, and a map of EK are below, then we can get our bearings.))

Karri - Emerald City
Emerald Kingdom

At some point in the early morning, it might occur to some members of the group that their sense of preparation and anticipation has been felt. As Athalorn steps out of a grove now chock full of discreet, newly fashioned hovels, shelves and holes, the tension outside in the forest is immediately obvious. It's coming from every blade of grass on the ground, every leaf on the trees, as though the forest itself is making its own preparations.
Falin's contemplations and prayer leave him with an impression of being shadowed by something immense; of great power and utterly untameable.
Both Glannath and and the direwolf are skittish and nervous. The wolf flattens her ears constantly.

In the grounds of the castle, K'Nara, Gunther and Lian become aware, as they move through the forms of their particular disciplines, that their exertions are somehow being shadowed, or mirrored, and that the ground drinks in every drop of sweat far too eagerly.
Gunther's cats are also flat-eared and rumbling with disquiet.

Everyone feels it - in the air that they breathe; they taste it in their breakfast and in the water they drink. It makes for a rather unnerving atmosphere.

Out on the road, the bridge lies ahead to the south, and beyond that is the City, where a faint pall of smoke can be seen. Odd, as though something other than the usual cookfires are burning.

Both elven archers and guards are currently marching in their own groups in the middle of the party.

Falin
Friday December 7th, 2007 11:45:42 AM

OCC: Looking at the map I guess I never realized how close we were to the Emerald City. Just funny how little I know of the area surrounding the tower.

As they march Falin absentmindedly rubs his left shoulder as if in pain. It had been a while since the werewolf had cursed him, but when something was coming it would again begin to ache. Probably more of a mental than physical condition. It scared him to think about that time in his life. He still secretly coveted the power he had held. The punishment he could inflict in close quarters. Even now, thinking about it, the hairs raise on his arms and the back of his neck.

His thoughts then run to that of his sister. From what he had learned on his time away he was more frightened of what that meant than actually fighting the dragons.

To take his mind off of it he makes his way up to the elven archers and has several of them go out to the sides and behind to just keep up a watch. If they were to see anything out of the ordinary they are to come back and report, but not to directly intercede themselves.

Gunther
Friday December 7th, 2007 12:12:58 PM

Along the journey, Gunther brightens as he suddenly remembers Athalorn's gift. He'd been so absorbed in himself that he'd almost forgotten about the package he'd received on the way back to the Tower. Grinning he makes his way over to the druid, making sure he keeps his distance from the wolf. Never one for formality, Gunther gets to the point. "Hey Athalorn...I got something for you." Gunther hands the bundle over to the druid and watches in anticipation. If he had a tail it would be wagging right now.

Lian
Friday December 7th, 2007 1:03:32 PM

(OOC: Still no reply on my purchases.)

The elf still wonders after all this time if his family are still alive. The monastery and his friends. Soon perhaps...?

Stretching a bit further, the monk cricks his neck. "Sheesh. That doesn't happen much. Age finally I suppose."
"Hey Ingrge, how does it feel to get old?" Shouts the monk cheerily.

Athalorn
Friday December 7th, 2007 1:32:15 PM

The druid is unusually quiet as the group of Dragons, and their small army, begin making their way toward the city. The forest's anticipation, and the edge in the Dire wolf's manner, make him even more nervous. He and the wolf walk some way to the side of the party.

Taking Gunther's gift, the druid looks on in bemusement. "For me? What in the Culverwood have you brought me my old friend?" He looks at the deep blue Dragonscales, realising quickly that it is a set of armour. He is genuinely stunned at Gunther's generosity, and manages a whispered reply, though sentiment comes unnaturally to him.. "I .... I have heard of such armour among my order. Songs of elves speak of a suit of Green that was made for a druid of the Culverwood many ages ago. I .... I don't know what to say." He grasps the man's hand in friendship. "You have always been a good friend. How can I repay you?"

--------------

Later, seeing the smoke from the Emerald City, Athalorn turns to his companions. "I shalltake a look." Without hesitation, he changes his form, the unkempt druid's body twisting and shrinking into the form of an eagle. He takes to the sky and approaches the city as fast as his golden wings will carry him.

Brother Bertram
Friday December 7th, 2007 3:31:17 PM

Bertram rides along with the others, dividing his time between cursing his fool mount and just contemplating what they would find ahead. He smiles to himself as Gunther and Athalorn bond close. He realizes just how truly lucky he is to have found this group of heroes. Then he realizes it wasnt luck and he again thanks both Domi and Gargul for thier aid. He wonders what the smoke can portend as well.

Lian
Friday December 7th, 2007 5:30:35 PM

"Bert, its been awhile since we talked. We haven't had much time as of late.

What are your feelings about this fight?"

K'Nara
Friday December 7th, 2007 9:00:58 PM

OOC: I, too, don't seem to remember Karri (Emerald City) being that close to the tower/castle. LOL Must be old age.

The leader of the Emerald Dragons checks over her horse and equipment one more time before mounting Poki and leading the procession towards Emerald City.

"Recon is always a good idea, Athalorn." K'Nara says to the druid, smiling. She turns that smile on Gunther as well, nodding her approval of his gesture.

Now...if only their upcoming confrontation with the three dragons awaiting them in the palace of the city would go as smoothly.

Brother Bertram
Friday December 7th, 2007 9:26:31 PM

Bertram smiles at Lian, "I am sure we will soon battle these upstart dragons Friend Lian, but my concern is who is behind all of this. This Nikolai came from nowhere and was unheard of, now suddenly he and the new consort have the ear of Parnoth? Something is afoul of the whole mess. Either way we will soon begin to deal with it." He looks at the holy symbol adorning his friends chest. "You have come a long way in your journey through the priesthood, Friend Lian. Much faster than I. Perhaps I was slowed by being torn by my serving Domi and my vows to Gargul, I know not." Bertram suddenly laughs, Probably just a poor attitude on my part. Bertram sobers, "But soon Friend Lian you will be far enough along to consider adding some henchman to your following to facilitate your service to Him. Have you considered that as of yet?"

Ingrge
Friday December 7th, 2007 10:25:13 PM

Ingrge hands Athalorn a cure moderate wand (40 charges left) and then he also hands out 10 +1 dragon bane arrows to K'nara, Olana, Falin and Milo keeping ten for himself, and then hands out 3 greater red dragon slaying arrows to Falin, Olana, and Milo and then hands three greater green dragon slaying arrows to K'nara for afe keeping.

Mounting Moonshadow, Ingrge calls back to Lian and his age quip. "I geuss it feels about the same as what you feel each time you wake up."

Gunther
Saturday December 8th, 2007 12:47:52 AM

The warrior claps the druid on the back. "Friends take care of von anoder... Just promise you'll vatch my back." With a wink, Gunther heads toward the back of the group, taking up the rear guard position.

Lian
Saturday December 8th, 2007 12:33:46 PM

"Followers?" Askes the elf, dumbfounded. "Friend Bretram, I can't see folks following me when I'm still searching."

Lian frowns slightly but recovers quickly from Ingrge's stab back. "You would know, Old Man!"

Brother Bertram
Saturday December 8th, 2007 3:06:29 PM

Bertram smiles at Lian's stunned look.
"Friend Lian, we will always be searching. The journey is what matters, not the destination." He begins again to wonder about what they would find ahead. He fingers his symbol of office as he rides, a nervous habit he has failed to notice that appears in times of worry.

Lian
Saturday December 8th, 2007 5:44:52 PM

The monk looks contemplatively at Bertram. "A failure to plan is a plan to fail. To look is the journey, the destination is hope?"

K'Nara
Sunday December 9th, 2007 7:13:20 PM

K'Nara hears Lian's wisdom and turns to look at the monk, eyebrows elevated and a grin on her face.

"I didn't know we had a bard in our midst." she teases, her hazel eyes twinkling with humor. However, in spite of choosing to react with levity, the leader of the Emerald Dragons knows that they are actually very much words to live by.

DM Jan
Monday December 10th, 2007 12:29:34 PM

Some of the elves take off into the trees, Athalorn takes off into the air, while the others relieve the tension with some on-the-road banter.

Another slight bend and the party will be in view of two guards that are usually posted at the city perimeter. From Olana's position she can see two of them. She can also see smoke definitely rising in a column, that looks to be coming from the palace area.

Athalorn has a much better view. From above, he can see an immense tree, right outside the palace, and it's on fire. Really on fire. A huge blaze. If he gets too close the thermals would likely kick him up into the stratosphere. Around it, people are milling about, guards, citizens, some have buckets of water, but there's some pushing and shoving; some have a red hand print on their chests.

The elves sent off to reconnoitre report back, saying that this area seems to be more dense with trees than it was before.

On rear guard, Gunther can't shake that feeling that they're being followed.

Lian
Monday December 10th, 2007 1:26:24 PM

The monk shrugs, but returns Knara's smile.

Moving on, the elf sees the palace in flames.
"I hope the children aren't still in there, if they were..."

(OOC: Still waiting for the Catacombs to complete my transaction.)

Athalorn
Monday December 10th, 2007 1:49:49 PM

Seeing the huge tree on fire, near the palace, Athalorn races through the warm air, wings pinned back, diving to get a better look. Considering his options, and the urgency of the blaze, the druid tries to land within range for a spell, on the edge of a building perhaps (around 230' from the fire). Screeching loudly, and gesturing a talon towards the fire, he casts Quench on the blaze, hoping it is sufficiently powerful a spell to extinguish the flames.

------------

Pack Sister lopes along with the others, straying not too far from the party but wary of the large collection of two legs that comprise this hunting party.

K'Nara
Monday December 10th, 2007 2:27:47 PM

Grinning back at Lian, K'Nara idly thinks that it's getting warmer for this time of year, isn't it? When she looks ahead, she sees the great tree aflame.

"Mother of gods!" she gasps. "Ingrge...is that...is that...is that the great tree--the one that traveled by Madyrn os Saryd Castle?" In her utter shock at the horrible fire before them, the leader of the Emerald Dragons calls the newly-finished home of the group by its elven name.

Falin
Monday December 10th, 2007 3:31:09 PM

Falin, knowing that where their is smoke their is fire concentrates more on what the elves are coming back and telling him. What could it mean?

"The woods are denser than they used to be." Falin yells out. "Is the forest trying to rise up against the city? I know we all felt it this morning when we set out. What is the forest doing?"

Lian
Monday December 10th, 2007 3:32:41 PM

OOC: I'm confused. Is it the Emerald's home or Parnoth's on fire? I was under the impression that it was Parnoth's. Didn't we just leave ours?

Athalorn
Monday December 10th, 2007 3:37:32 PM

OOC: Lol I'm now confused also. I read that the tree is on fire. But re-reading it may be the palace.... Athalorn will cast spell wherever fire is.

Jamie OOC: I place my cs on Google docs and then publish it. The link it gives me I place in the post name block. I had to go to the posting section of the rules to get the exact way to make it so it just shows Falin.

Milo
Monday December 10th, 2007 7:35:48 PM

Milo muses on the state of the trees even as he watches the fire being put out. "Its difficult to say what the forest might be doing... but trees kinda grow on their own... so I don't see the big deal."

The burning tree is indeed the old ancient, who'd previously stopped by the tower and appeared to be now firmly planted right outside the palace's front gate, with the fountain directly behind it.

What appears to be about a million buckets of water descends on the tree. The flames die off and huge clouds of steam rise into the air.

In order to see the tree, the group have traveled past the two guards. These guards are now blowing horns for all they are worth.
WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH!

Suddenly everything becomes a whole lot more urgent.
Two of the men wearing red hand prints run inside the palace. Six similarly dressed are still outside along with 10 guards. They are intermingled with about 20 citizens. All are right outside the palace door, surrounding the tree.

((Okay folks, lets get our ducks in a row. I need positions, and strategy. Only Athalorn is close enough for spells and ranged combat right now. Everyone else needs to move somewhere in order to do anything. Tell me where. Next round for ranged attacks of any kind. Another two rounds after that for melee unless you have exceptional speed, or earlier if I bring it out to you and my NPCs can see you.
Right now I have Ath on top of the palace. Everyone else at the cross roads in the city, facing the garden district and looking toward the palace. Lets use that as a starting point. Use the city map for now, I'll put out more detail when I know where you all are.))

"What do you want us to do?" ask both the elven bowmen and the guards.

It's showtime!

K'Nara
Tuesday December 11th, 2007 3:49:32 PM

The leader of the Emerald Dragons addresses Bertram, as he is the person who is "closest" to the contingent of Mop's guards that accompanied the Emeralds back to the city.

"See if your new friends can get information for us--where is Parnoth, Enuril and Nikolai? We need to know yesterday!" K'Nara then turns and addresses everyone else. "Buff up--whatever you have, take it or cast it...I'm amenable to any kind of protection at the moment. We aren't going to attack anyone other than Nikolai, Enuril and Parnoth--and in that order, preferably...however, if you're not given any choices, definitely defend yourself."

After any buffs that get tossed her way, K'Nara's plan is to have the Emeralds approach the palace with Milo and/or Olana on point. We need to find out exactly what happened to the tree and why. If it turns out that the tree was flamed, the group is definitely going to need to confirm where to find the evil dragons before continuing on with their intentions to stop Enuril and Nikolai.

Falin
Tuesday December 11th, 2007 4:22:10 PM

To the elves, "Split into two groups. Continue with the group, but one at each side. If you see hostiles begin to advance on the group you support by hitting them from afar and wearing them down. Concentrate your attacks on one target at a time for most effectiveness. If you are attacked defend yourselves."

Falin will continue with the group, but off to the right side. He will watch for possible targets as he follows with the group.

"K'Nara, I have given the elves orders to cover us and to defend themselves if necessary. I will cover the group from the side. If I have my way nothing will get close to us," Falin says then a smile across his face,"but we know how that seems to go."

The warrior scans the skies looking for the red (Spot=21, 16 and 26 for 3 rounds). He moves up next to K'nara as he downs a potion (Barkskin). He grins as his skin becomes tough and leathery. Then he gulps down another potion and he doubles in size (Enlarge Person). Should he locate anything in his search of the sky, he will immediately notify everyone via the rings and then activate his Celestial armor.

The party assume their various protections and advance forward. The guards nod at Bert and then head off behind the buildings to the south west, the elves split into two groups and flank the main party.

In the sky, tiny whisps of cloud begin to coalesce. Nothing else ie. no dragons.

To K'nara, Lian, Ingrge, Falin, Gunther and Bert, there appears to be some kind of ruckus going on around the ancient tree at the other side of the fountain in front of the palace. There's a lot of shouting going on.

Closer up, Milo picks up the gist of the conversation. There are citizens who have been trying to put the tree fire out (which is no longer burning) and there are guards and 'others' trying to stop them. In fact one of the 'others' is trying to set the tree alight again.
Both Olana and Milo can see that these 'other's are Hands of Love clerics.

The horns are still blowing however, and some of the HoL and guards are looking around.
"Look!" someone points at the giant Gunther.
The HoL don't waste time, and a nasty column of flame, courtesy of a Flame Strike spell shoots down onto the towering orc-raised warrior.
Whooosh! Everyone else in the immediate vicinity gets their eyebrows singed.
Dam 46
Reflex save for half damage DC 18
Half damage is magical damage and is not absorbed by fire protection.

Everyone is in ranged attack range.
Melee range will take this next round to cover the distance before you can attack.
Use cover and watch out for citizens.
There are 6 HoLs, 10 guards, 20 citizens, all distributed as per the map.

Perched behind the clerics and guards, Athalorn is angered by their attempts to burn the Ancient. Raising his wings to their full span, his lightning spell finished, the eagle screeches loudly once more. Instead of lightning, a column of ferocious fire thunders to the ground, engulfing as many clerics as the druid can manage, returning their gesture to his friends.

The forest. Too much power. Dreams of death and madness. Strands of chaos dancing and flirting like will o wisps amongst stout columns of order. A thing toppled, destroyed and buried, and yet its legacy remains and spreads. Can't touch it, can't grasp it, can't erase it.
It shifts like smoke, moves like the wind, hangs in the air like a turgid fog...
But wait.
Sound. Faint.
Distant horns.

Ears twitch, and atop an immense pile of gold coins, the green-scaled lid of a huge eye rises...

A huge flash of light, a hail of arrows and a blast of immense heat has all the citizens and some of the guards screaming and running for cover, away from the devastation.

The HOL:

#1, and #2 lie dead on the ground, either electricuted, pierced and/or fried.
#3 is in bad shape and is staggering toward the palace doorway.
#4 and #5 have each grabbed a citizen hostage and are now shielded and backing toward the palace doorway. They can't cast, of course because their hands are full.
#6 is standing his ground.

The guards:

#1, #2 are down and fried.
#3, #4, #5, #6 are surrounding and guarding HOL #6
As for #7, 8, 9 and 10 - in trying to escape they've run right into the path of the oncoming, all stealthy-like Milo, and Lian!

All of the citizens are away and clear, some injured by fire and lightning, and screaming for all they're worth, with the exception of those two unfortunate to be in the hands of the HOL.

Flames are beginning to lick amongst the branches of the great tree once more.

Bert's water elemental starts it's journey toward the action in front of the palace.

Out on his own, Gunther alone gets another blast of Flame Strike, courtesy of guard surrounded HOL #6, now in melee range.

Greetings Woldians!

I am excited to tell you that BIG, even HUGE changes are coming for The Wold. The Wold is evolving and everyone one of you will be affected. But I'm not going to tell you about it here. I'm just going to whet your appetite:

--A new type of game
--Major changes to the website
--Greater choice for both DMs and players!

I will begin introducing the new material in the LnB sometime between now and Monday. You will need to start watching that board daily to understand what is going to be happening. This process will be ongoing for a bit, so you really do need to view the Loot 'n Booty board daily starting now.

I'm mass emailing this and also posting it on every game board so everyone sees it.

Enjoy your weekend!

K'Nara scowls deeply at the sight of the citizens being taken as shields by the HOL.

"I'm in the mood to smack some Hands," she says to Olana, drawing her trusty sword Lucia from its scabbard on her back, "Let's go do that, shall we?" So saying, the leader of the Emerald Dragons charges forth, heading straight for the clerics with the hostages.

Both elf groups break rank and scatter in an effort to see to the frightened citizens.
Mop's ex-guards are still heading for the rear of the palace.
Bert's water elemental is now slowly circling the great tree, plucking at small flames as they appear like it was picking apples.

Both Lian and Milo manage to slip through the fleeing, terrified guards and get into position.
Milo is now in close proximity of HOL 3. He has not been noticed.
Lian is now behind HOL 4 and 5, who both have hostages. He has been noticed.

Bert and K'Nara head at full tilt toward the hostage situation and are now in melee range of HOL 4 and 5. Olana accompanies them but stays in ranged attack range.

Gunther lays into his assailants. He's going to have to lay into the guards first in order to get at HOL #6, which he does magnificently, and Guard #4 drops to his knees.
Guards 3, 5 and 6 lay into Gunther in retaliation, some of whom appear to be fairly skilled swordsmen. However, only one manages to get through Gunthers considerably toughened hide, for 8 DAM

Ingrge steps back and sends his spell toward #6 and something horrible begins to arrive in #6's mind about the same time as Falin's arrows.
Will Saved at 27. The man shakes off the spell with a growl of anger but is pushed back sharply and wounded by the elf's arrow attack.
Right now he appears to be muttering and healing himself.

Ingrge's new position further back enables him to catch a quick glimpse of something massive appearing before his view becomes obstructed by the palace.

Athalorn has a better view. Taking flight he catches sigh of a young woman, her arms outstretched in a swan dive, dropping, falling toward the rear courtyard, skirts fluttering and long hair twisting in the wind. What on earth caused her to jump, after all weren't they here to rescue?
But then her head turns, and in that fraction of a second she smiles right at him.
Her arms elongate and unfold, snapping through the air and catching the dive and she swoops low, down behind the rear of the castle, growing massive and then starting to gain height.

Back at the front of the palace, HOL 4 and 5 have their hostages tightly gripped and look ready to cast.
#4 Yells at the approaching K'Nara and Bertram.
"Don't come any closer, or we'll - " he falters. "Or we'll - oh, no..."

Everyone feels it. That all too familiar, terrifying presence, accompanied by a twist in the belly and arrow at the heart of the will.
DRAGON FEAR.
Will Save DC 25 or become shaken for 16 rounds (yikes this baby is scary!) (that's a -2 on just about anything)

Here she comes now, sing mo-nay, mo-nay..

Highlight to display spoiler: {(OOC: Jan, if Lian activates Lesser Courage, will it hinder attacks? It does not say, so I assume not. Can I assume its a free action too? :))}

(Save vs fear 35)

The hand of Domi feels the fear come on and he begins laughing, more loudly than ever. His laugh brings hope to the hearts who hear Domi's cry ring through the elf "Have Courage!". He hopes the hostages are not fakers! but allies.

Continuing his laughter, the monk moves to grapple #4, with hostage. (33 Grapple, 10 damage if successful) If he is able, Lian will allow the hostage to slide free while maintaining grip on his true opponent.

(Remember Jan, these HOL receive -1 from Prayer)

(- Lesser Courage - When the hand laughs, he gains a +4 bonus on all saving throws vs. fear. If he is currently affected by fear, laughing gives him a second save (at +4) to throw off the effect. Allies within earshot (generally 50 feet) gain +2 vs. fear when the hand is laughing, but don't get second rolls to save. A hand can't cast any verbal-component spells when laughing. This is a supernatural ability.)

Brother Bertram AC38 HP116 SR25
Saturday December 15th, 2007 6:45:46 PM

Bertram feels the fear settling over the others and ignores it as his spells protect him from such nonsense. He considers the two innocents in front of him and at the same time the need for all of his comrades to be at top form. He curses under his breath, unsure what to do, then brightens as he hears the booming laughter of Lian rising over the din of battle. He sees the falter of the HOL members as the fear spreads over them. He look at them for a moment then just roars at them. "Flee you fools, Flee while you still can! The Dragon approaches!"
Bertram is certain that they have no nerve left for the fight, but keeps half an eye on them as he starts scanning the sky for the dragon. Even as he does he says another prayer and he begins to glow with a holy light and begins to grow in stature until he is double his former height. He still keeps some of his attention on the HOLers to make sure they flee rather than fight. If they try to kill the hostages, Bertram has healing spells ready to utter instantly.

K'Nara's blood freezes and the hairs on the back of her neck prickle to attention as her intuition screams for her to run, RUN!!! She is paralyzed with the effects of the dragon fear that washes over her even as she hears the warm laugh of Lian penetrate the fog of inaction.

You can't run--you're the leader of the group! Lucia's voice adds its own persuasion to the calming effect of the Hand of Domi's supernatural encouragement. Too many people are depending on you...the Wold is depending on you!!!

The all-too-human blade singer blinks as the combination of Lian's tactics and Lucia's reminders dissolves the miasma of terror that threatened to consume her.

"...depending on...me..." she echoes, panting with the mental effort to yank free of the residual fear generated by the flying drake...and is very barely successful at doing so.

(OOC: K'Nara's first roll to make a Will Save was, unfortunately, a natural 1--she definitely failed. However, she uses one Hero Point to reroll, getting a 23, which also would normally fail...only as she is definitely within earshot of Lian and his supernatural ability to give Courage to his allies, the +2 that gets added to her roll makes her total 25, and thus she succeeds...barely.)

Leaping at HoL4, K'Nara's left hand shoots out and grasps the hostage the priest is holding by the front of their garments and uses all her strength to yank the hostage out of the evil priest's grip. (OOC: rolled a 31 to grab the hostage and K'Nara's subsequent Strength check is 19. Should this prove sufficient to free the hostage from HoL4's grasp, K'Nara is going to use Lucia to chop off a Hand of Love in the next round while pushing the hostage away.)

Olana tries to swallow back her fear of the oncoming dragon, and grips her bow tightly. nevetheless her hands are shaking.

Figuring at this distance she's likely to do more harm than good with the HOL hostage situation, Olana takes aim at Guard #6 who is attacking Gunther.

Lian's Domi-inspired laughter does a lot to shatter the fear that has swept over everyone in front of the palace.

The scuffle in front of the palace with HOLs 4 and 5 gets desperate.
HOL #4 simply does not have the means to beat the monk's grappling attack and K'nara snatches the terrified hostage away from his loosened grip.
The man tries to swipe at Lian with a small, liquid-tipped dagger, lashing this way and that.
FAIL.

HOL #5 takes one look at the 'new' Bertram, then promptly slams his own dagger into his screaming hostage and makes a paniced run for the palace door.

Meanwhile, over by the palace door, HOL #3 has just made it up the shallow steps, only to be literally stopped 'dead' by Milo. He slumps on the stone stairs, his heart still, his lifesblood pooling on the stone.

At the other side of the tree, HOL #6 has healed himself, but finds himself once again slammed by Falin's arrow shafts. Angered, wounded and howling he spits out another spell, and immediately a gray miasma surrounds him, his guards and Gunther.

Casting UnHoly Blight.
25 DAM + sickened
Wis DC 19 for half
His own guards take 'some' damage, also, but that doesn't appear to bother him in the slightest.

Guard #6 coughs staggers and falls under the miasma and Olana's arrows.

Athalorn gets to work on his summon spell and hears an angry roar as the dragon burst her way out of a frosty cloud. He, Falin and Ingrge can see her fly up and bank around the south end of the palace, getting ready for a swoop.

The cat trainer is shaken despite Lian's laughter (Will=22). It's coming for me!! It's going to eat me!! Scanning the skies for the terror he knows is going to sweep down any second and eat him alive, Gunther doesn't even catch the spellcaster. Suddenly he's immersed in pain (Wis=7).

Paranoid and in intense pain, the warrior casts about desperately for the location of the dragon (Spot=23). If he finds her he will shout out her location to the others and give persuit if she is in range. Otherwise he remembers to fly up and over the guards attacking him and then use his 10 foot reach to reach out and touch that pesky spellcaster...unfortunately he's too overwhelmed to be of any use (AC20...ack nat. 1).

The massive form of red wings and scales descends. Right now it's hard for Ingrge to tell if his frosty spell had any effect or not, although the earlier angry roar suggested the possibility.
It is also difficult to tell what Enirul's plan of attack is. However, what happens next suggests that the end result wasn't part of any plan whatsoever.

About 60ft up and parallel to the southern edge of the palace, Falin's arrows hit, and so does Athalorn's air elemental. Consequently, Enirul's altitude drops abruptly to about 30 ft -
- she rolls, curling her wings.
- her breath weapon goes off - a surprising and jagged line of blinding, jaw-aching lightning that goes off toward the palace at an angle, hitting - Bert - K'Nara - HOL #5 - the stabbed hostage - it narrowly misses Lian who is busy trying to knock HOL #4's septum into his brain - and finally hits the palace doorway, blasting and splitting the masonary and sending sizeable chunks of it flying.

The dragon's trajectory sends her down - crashing through the enormous trees' branches, and landing like a sack of turnips approx 60ft north of the great tree. (Top centre of previous map.)
She's down, rolling upright onto her feet, and boy is she angry.

For a few terrible moments, the area around the front of the palace becomes a war zone, as a hail of arrows fly, spells flash through the air, and the bitter bellow of pain from the dragon shatters surrounding windows. The hot iron stench of blood is in the air and one suspects it doesn't all belong to the dragon.

Fueled by pain and fury, in a terrible state, the dragon lashes out, clenching her shattered teeth and biting down hard on Lian; her tail swings about, rapping hard against the approaching Milo and K'nara; a might claw reaches out, it's formidable talons attempting to snatch at the approaching Gunther.

Lian, DAM 26

Milo and K'nara - tail sweep DAM 20, Reflex DC30 for half

Gunther - attempted claw attack, natural 1 misses.

But it's all done in Enirul's last gasp. Was it K'nara's eventual hit? That disinegrated hole in her side? The hordes of bristling arrows in her hide? It's hard to say for sure, but she drops, groans, and then breathes no more. Blood begins to pool on the ground.

Lian is still held in the jaws and will need to be extracted. There are pieces of the dragon's teeth stuck in his torso and thigh.

Falin gets the sense that there is something afoot with the direwolf.

Athalorn's position enables him to see the direwolf approaching a group of citizens in a predatory fashion. A feeling of emnity is coming through the wreath. The citizens are clustered together and trying to muster weapons and ward off the beast. This is all happening in the next street to the north (up off the top of the latest map).

Suddenly the hair stands on the back of his neck. Something is not right. I feel something I haven't felt in...

Falin scans the area around him and sees the Dire Wolf. He knows what they look means. He has felt it before... some sort of bloodlust. He regrets his desision, but his friends hurt by the dragon would have to wait.

Falin runs as quickly as his legs will carry him and tries to place himself between the wolf and the civilians. "Easy fella. No one wants to hurt you. Your just a little intimidating to them. Go eat some dragon instead of these folks here."

Ok all, who has that wand? Everyone needs a charge before Nickoli or Parnoth gets here, which with our luck will be shortly.

Brother Bertram, can you see what Lian needs in the way of healing? Other than Lian, Who else needs healing?

Athalorn, you want to see how badly hurt our tree friend here is?

Gunther aid K'nara and Milo and make darn sure that red-scaled, bride-to-be is very dead.

Olana organize those elves to gaurd the perimeter here and have the guards who came with us take control of those that opposed us and help the citizens.

Sensing the anger in the Dire Wolf's mind, and seeing the local folk trying to stave it off with weapons, the druid leaps into the air, flying quickly, a feathered arrow, straight to Falin, between the wolf and the people. Given time, his body begins to stretch and twists, wings replaced by arms, talons by feet.

Using the wreath, he shouts a firm command at the wolf. "Sister! Down! NOW! We do not attack innocent folk!"

Then a moment of clear thought, and Athalorn quickly spins round to he gathered people, looking carefully at their eyes.

K'Nara
Monday December 24th, 2007 5:20:16 PM

The leader of the Emerald Dragons continues to do what she can to make sure that Lian is all right. Once it's confirmed that Lian is at least out of the dragon's mouth, she'll see to it that both the monk and Brother Bertram are healed of damage.

Brother Bertram AC 34 HP 116
Tuesday December 25th, 2007 8:37:36 PM

Bertram runs through the streets roaring at anyone getting in his way. There was something to be said for being this size...

(OOC Merry Christmas Everyone!)

K'Nara (AC33; 120/143hp; Prt. from Fire; Courage)
Tuesday December 25th, 2007 9:10:55 PM

K'Nara blinks as the dwarven cleric runs, runs away. Well, she knows he isn't running away, but she sees that he apparently isn't as hurt as she'd feared.

"Um...are you all right, Lian...?" she asks the elven monk again, turning back to the person she was originally helping.

OOC: Merry Christmas, everybody!

Falin AC 23 HP 70 Protection from Fire
Wednesday December 26th, 2007 10:48:04 AM

Falin stands, waiting for the possible strike from the beast. He knows it is just the beasts nature and not that it is intentionally getting ready to pounce.

Lian(AC 34, Hps 58/122)[TAC 28, FFAC 34] B Str, Prot f. Fire, End Ele, Bears End, Prayer
Wednesday December 26th, 2007 1:53:03 PM

Faint and clammy, the monk stands unsteadily. "Whew!" He sways and catches onto Knara.

K'Nara (AC33; 120/143hp; Prt. from Fire; Courage; Brahma's Tattoo (Cure Moderate Wounds 1/3) )  2d8(6+6)+3=15
Wednesday December 26th, 2007 2:35:09 PM

K'Nara's reflexes have her grab onto the dizzy elf.

"I oughta box them pointy ears of yours for doing such a dammfool thing like that!" she tells Lian in a very severe voice, then clenches her empty left hand into a fist, muttering an invocation of some type. Opening that hand again she holds it up so that the brave monk sees a now-glowing tattoo of a rearing unicorn in the middle of her palm--right before K'Nara smacks that hand in the middle of his forehead.

OOC: K'Nara is applying her Cure Moderate Wounds spell effect to Lian in her own unique fashion. In spite of getting smacked in the head, Lian is now healed up by 15hp.

Milo (AC 29, 30 to dragon; hp 113/113); blink, prot'n from fire  d100=14
Wednesday December 26th, 2007 3:16:11 PM

Saved by his ring of blinking, Milo scoots out from where the red landed... "Where all okay over here... How are you?" The halfling grins... "But seriously folks, I don't think I have another one of these in me."

OOC: Rolled the miss chance for Milo's ring... the tail slap missed.

Olana  2d8(6+1)+4=11 2d8(1+4)+4=9
Wednesday December 26th, 2007 7:51:54 PM

Glad to see Milo emerging unscathed at the side of the now dead dragon, Olana nods at Ingrge. But before she does as instructed, she lowers her bow and takes out the party Cure Mod Wounds wand.
Stepping over to Lian, she pauses until he and K'Nara have extracted any debris from his flesh and then pokes him sharply twice with the healing stick.
"Good to see she didn't bite your head off. That should do till Bert gets back" she says, then walks off to muster the elves into guard duty.

Lians HPs +11 and +9

DM Jan
Wednesday December 26th, 2007 8:28:02 PM

Lian (along with one full sized and rather impressive dragon tooth) is extracted from the partially shattered jaw of the mighty beast and healing spells are applied. The dragon's hide is already growing cold. K'nara, Ingrge, Olana, Milo, Lian and Gunther note the following:

People, citizens of Emerald City, mostly those who were running away from the attack, are now stood stock still and are staring at the dead dragon in horrified silence. Horrified, because the implications of Enirul's blood on the ground are fairly obvious, and possible consequence gathers in the collective psyche like a black storm cloud.
The elven archers take up strategic points on guard on an approx 50 ft perimeter.

A street away to the north, Falin and Athalorn confront the situation between Ath's dire wolf companion and a group of citizens who are trying to ward her off.
The wolf's hackles are way up, waaay up. Her ears are flat, her teeth are visible, she looks extremely intimidating and ready to go on the attack. That might strike both Athalorn and Falin as a little odd - unless of course she had been provoked. As it happens, she stands down, snorts dismissively, and then circles behind Athalorn. Her eyes stay on the crowd.
Stood before the elf and the druid are 12 humans, a mix of male and female. Some of the group are armed with shovels and pitchforks. All are looking at the wolf warily, perhaps with good reason.
Watching the crowd, Athalorn comes to the conclusion, just going off body language, that one of this group is the leader - a tall, dark-red haired man armed with a shovel. The stance and glances of the others suggest a natural trust and deferral to him.
The man speaks, gesturing with his chin toward the dire wolf.
"Is that thing safe? Or is it still determined to eat us all?"

Meanwhile!!!!!!eleventy1111!!
Bertram heads off at great speed around the side of the palace. Rounding the rear corner, he is met by a line of screaming children who are heading toward him at blind run. Beyond that, at the 'tradesmens' entrance of the palace, are some of Mop's previous guards who appear to have set upon and overcome the palace guards.
There is also a small group of kitchen staff stood outside, chattering nervously amongst themselves, ovbiously wondering what the heck is going on.

Athalorn
Thursday December 27th, 2007 9:51:47 AM

"Of course she is safe! Stop waving pitchforks in her direction and she mightn't be so upset!"

The druid leads the wolf away from the crowd, toward the Ancient tree. As he gets there, he casts Speak with Plants, looking around the burnt spirit and then communing. "great spirit of the Culverwood. Are you hurt badly? Can we aid you in some way?"

Lian(AC 34, Hps 93/122)[TAC 28, FFAC 34] B Str, Prot f. Fire, End Ele, Bears End

"Thanks for the healing. I can take care of the rest as it was my fault to begin with." He smiles. "Though, look around, a Mass cure moderate would be nice."

He looks at the dire wolf, dragon corpse, pitchforks, giant oaken tree and the many people milling about and he roars laughing. "Man, Parnoth is going to be peeved!" He says, tucking away Enirul's tooth. "This will make a nice dagger. I do need one. They come in handy."

Ingrge looks around at all the citizens nearby and mutters a curse. K'nara what are we going to do about Enuril's body? And has anyone located that blasted wand yet?

K'Nara (AC33; 120/143hp; Prt. from Fire; Courage)
Thursday December 27th, 2007 3:48:38 PM

The tall blade singer frowns.

"Ah, yes...the body." she echoes, shrugging. "Um...I don't suppose we can tell Parnoth that she sort of...tripped, or something?" K'Nara looks around, something suddenly popping into her cauled hesd.

"Say...where is Parnoth? You'd think a ruckus like this would have brought the bridegroom-to-be running? Or Nicholai himself, at the very least." Rubbing the side of her chin thoughtfully, the leader of the Emerald Dragons moues.

"Our original mission stands." she says firmly. "We came here because of the children that are being held hostage, as well as to try to determine what in the Wold is up with Parnoth. Nicholai getting his is something I'd love to see done as well. We need to continue on with our original intentions...the body is the concern of whomever wishes to dispose of it, I suppose."

Falin AC 23 HP 70 Protection from Fire
Thursday December 27th, 2007 4:03:53 PM

"You think if we just kind of covered it with some shrubery anyone would notice." Says Falin with a smile across his face. As soon as K'Nara mentions the kids the smile disappears from Falins face as he is ready for action once again.

Lian
Thursday December 27th, 2007 4:10:22 PM

"We should probably get in there before the children are moved.
One or both dragons might already be inside anyway." He begins toward the palace.

"I think that Parnoth's guard should all take the dragon as a payment for their services or something.
There's something ironic about his disenchanted former guard wearing his late bride." He smiles. "She's worth a fortune on the black market, I would think. Personally, I fancy a suit of fine green dragon hide. And nice boots for smart parties." He snickers.

Lian
Friday December 28th, 2007 7:58:09 AM

"Well, anyone else coming?" As he points to the palace.

(OOC: The red dragon hide is going to be worth a bit. What is going to happen to it?)

Falin

"I am with you Lian." Says Falin as he follows towards the palace.

Gunther
Friday December 28th, 2007 2:48:28 PM

Shaking himself in order to remove the last of the dragon fear, Gunther grunts and nods. First he checks to ensure that the red truly is dead. Then he prepares to head out with the others.

CDM Jerry: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Saturday December 29th, 2007 11:56:46 AM

Greetings Woldians,

I hope you've been keeping up with the changes we've been discussing on the LnB. If not, you have a novel to read amongst all the posts.

Basically, we're doing the following things:

--purging all 2nd characters from everyone except DMs...that's their reward for being a DM.
--We're adding a new type game: Challenge Games. It is a 2 year campaign game. We're calling our normal games Career Games.

Anyway, because of the Challenge Games, which will begin ASAP for their first 2 year run, as well as the pruning of the 2nd characters, we'll be holding a vote starting

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2ND

...and ENDING on

MONDAY, JANUARY 7TH

We'll be voting on one thing only:

Do you want to play in a Challenge Game or a Career Game?

If you choose Career Game, I"ll want a second piece of information. I will need to know if you want to remain in your current game or move to another.

That's it.

Voting is NOT accepted until January 2nd and all votes will be emailed to me here at gericko@gmail.com. I will not accept votes that are made on the LnB, though you may post your vote there if you want.

If you don't vote, then the ACDMs and I will be PLACING you into a Challenge game by default as that is the "new thing" and we're kinda pushing it as a new option.

Let me repeat that and reword it:

If you don't vote you lose your right to choose your game and WILL be placed. Yeah I know that is hard, but we're moving forward and don't want to have votes trickling in weeks later.

This email is just to get your attention in case you haven't been following the information overload on the LnB.

If you have a question about all this or are now totally confused, reply to me only or post on the LnB where you'll get 100s of people telling you what is going on. :)

Or you can IM me on AIM. My handle is Gericko.

Enjoy your day and don't freak out!

CDM Jerry

DM Jan
Saturday December 29th, 2007 2:26:32 PM

As the group move toward the palace they're met by a small crowd of panicy screaming children who have come hurtling past Bertram and are intent on re-uniting themselves with their parents.

Still at the rear side of the palace, one of the ex-Mop guards says to Bert. "We got the kids out with only a few injuries amongst ourselves. At one point the biggest threat was the chef, who thought his larder was being robbed. We were able to rely on confusion when it came to the palace guard."

"What's going on?" bellows a rather stout fellow by the kitchen door, dressed in a white apron and weilding a cleaver.

There are 6 palace guards lying face down on the ground outside, all being watched carefully by the ex-Mop boys.

Back round the front, Athalorn tries to establish some contact with the great tree. Its reply - one word, in a deep rumble that almost seems to be coming from the earth itself. "Water," it pleads.

Over at the dragon, Gunther establishes that yes, the dragon is indeed dead, and there is some kind of strange metal and glass thing huddled in the folds of flesh around her throat.

Some of the villagers are beginning to group together and are starting to follow the Dragons toward the palace. They're curious, and they have questions.
"What are you going to do? What about Parnoth?"
It's that tall, dark red haired man again, who appears to be a leader of some kind.

Turning back around, "Looks like the kids have been rescued. I am all for going inside and hiding out for the mad brother and groom to be to show up and then get them too."

K'Nara is glad to see that the children are out of the palace.

"Get these kids, their folks, and all of the civilians out of here, now." she orders the palace guards, emphasizing the last word. She is about to turn back to the others in her party when an idea comes to mind that makes her stiffen and turn towards the tall, red-headed man.

"Who are you..?" she asks curiously. "And where did you come from? I must admit--you're extraordinarily courageous...for a human. I mean, what with there only recently having been a female red dragon flying about and all." Her hazel eyes narrow a bit at the stranger.

'Could this guy be Nikolai in disguise...?' she wonders to herself. 'After all...Athalorn's wolf reacted to SOMEthing in this group of people...'

Gunther
Sunday December 30th, 2007 12:02:21 AM

Hmmmm...interesting. Well, curiosity killed the kobold, not the orc, right?

Gunther heads over to where he sees the metal and glass thing and proceeds to remove it from the dead dragons next...cutting it free if need be.

The monk grins at KNara.

Maybe this means he can hit someone without provocation. Good.

When the kids are a good distance away, and he has cast Detect Magic, Lian walks up to the red headed man. (he will look about the group while he approaches the man. Anything exceptionally strong will be his first inquiry. Is the man radiating?)
Looking him boldly in the eye, mere inches from him, Lian says.
"Don't beat about the bush Knara. I smell dragon dung. Cowardous, hiding among children, but I expect nothing more from a murderer of the innocent." He keeps his ears open, not 100% convinced this is Nikolai... the red could have easily been one of those kids or even a parent. (Sense Motive, ack, nat 1 for 13... Listen 35)

DM Jan
Tuesday January 1st, 2008 11:22:15 PM

Over by the dead dragon, Gunther manages to extract the metal object. In order to hold it, he needs to grip it with both hands. It's quite heavy and has magical runes carved all over it. Milo wanders over, curious.

Over by the tree, the great ancient asks Athalorn for water. The dire wolf stands alongside her companion.

If Bert has followed the children and come back around the front, he'll see the kiddies running to find their parents. Some of them seem to be reunited already.

At the front entrance to the palace, K'Nara, Lian, Ingrge, Falin, and Olana face the group of citizens who's followed them. There are eight of them, seven of whom back off a little bit as Lian approaches. They also look at Falin and Olana warily. The man with the red hair isn't impressed, however.

"My name is êðàñíûé (pronounced Krasnaya)," he says evenly to K'nara. "Originally, I hail from the Plateaus, but it's part of my job to travel and investigate." he gestures toward a small red, three-tined pin on the lapel of his shirt. There are letters carved into it - WLA. "I've been in this area for a few weeks now. I've stayed so I can help these people," he glances back at the dead dragon, "against these dragons' tyrannical ways. I have to admit we're rather glad you showed up. i don't supposed you'd be going after Parnoth next?"

"Are you feeling all right?" he asks Lian, looking him right in the eye. The man looks like he can handle himself.

All detect magics indicate something inside the palace, and a whopping great signal coming from the item Gunther now has in his hands. Nothing of any note on or around the red-haired man.))

((OOC - okay folks, I'm back on my normal posting schedule. Thanks for bearing with me over Christmas.))

((OOC - I'm also going to have to write Milo out temporarily. As you know his player Chris is part of the WotC team, and they've got 4th Edn to bring out, so he'll be busy.))

The druid, still in human form, quickly casts Create Water, drenching the branches of the Ancient Tree. He casts again, water dripping down the thick bark and branches. Out of the corner of his eye he watches the rest of the Dragons deal with the crowd, and with the corpse, and with the children.

The hand's expression softens. He smiles, not at all abashed by his judgement. "Well my good man, we can't be too careful in these trying times, please forgive my ignorrance." He extends a hand to êðàñíûé. "Please, one question, just to be sure." He turns to a citizen. "Has this man been helping against the dragons."

(Can Lian Sense any emotion, anything, from êðàñíûé? Anger? Sadness? Fear? Happiness at the dragon's demise?)

Still concentrating, he keeps his Detect Magic active, focusing its powers on the most powerful aura in the area, likely Gunther's object.

(Curious, why weren't we placed as a Challenge game for our last two years before retirement?)

Seeing that the human maleis going to be well taken care of Falin proceeds over to the colar that Gunther has found. "If I were a betting man I would give two guesses. Either it is some type of mind control or it is a warning system for whomever put it there letting them know what is going on with her. And if that is the case they are probably wondering why she is dead." He says the last with a bit of a smile.

"If we are setting up an ambush I feel I would be best used in one of the towers so I can either fire from above or see them coming."

"You'll forgive my...surprise, Krasnaya," K'Nara says, "But just how did you think you were going to help people out against three huge, ancient dragons...were you planning to spade the drakes away?"

OOC: why is it that this guy reminds me of The Shoveler from "Mystery Men"? LOL

K'Nara, of course, has no magesense nor a Detect Magic spell in force, and thus cannot know about any object that is radiating any arcane aura or signal until somebody who does detect it says something out loud.

((A note on Gunther's find, and my bad - I should have put this in my last post - it's an eicosahedron, a twenty sided round object, heavy, dense, metal, maybe 40lbs in weight but only 9" in diameter. Each of the twenty sides are covered in runes.))

Over by the tree, water pools then soaks into the ground surrounding the trunk, and after a few moment, the druid can see tiny green leaves beginning to sprout on some of the charred branches. The tree appears to be breathing almost, gathering strength.

Over by the rest of the group, Lian shakes the man's hand. Just gut instinct - there is no sense of anger at Lian's earlier accusations, no fear. No emotion really, at all.
When asked, another citizen says "Er, yeah, I suppose, yes. He told us not to be afraid." The man glances at Krasnaya then says no more.

Krasnaya replies to K'Nara, "Well, I think we'd got to the point where we knew we couldn't anything by ourselves. Maybe the next stage would have been to come and see you." He smiles.

No sign of anything in the skies. Yet.

Magics emanating from the palace indicate some kind of mid-level protections that Ingrge would expect of a place like this.

Gunther's object? It's a mixture of summoning and holding magic. Very strong. Very high level. Strong enough for even Gunther, Milo and Falin to feel a slight tingle from it. It might need further study.

The ex-mop guards appear from around the corner. They're accompanied by the still gruntled chef who seems determined to get some answers. "What's going on?" he bellows, cleaver still in hand. Then he catches sight of the dead dragon. The sight seems to knock some of the wind out of him.

((You know, I'd forgotten about the Challege game issue. I'll mention it again to Jerry.))

The elf raises a quizical eyebrow. Looking from the citizen back to their 'savior', Lian asks, "So, Krasnaya was it? why is it that this fine..." He points to the citizen, "...person seems almost afraid to speak in your presence? You have SOME sort of hold here, even if you aren't a dragon playing human. You show very little emotion in the fact that we have rid you of a third of your problems. No gratitude. I mean to say, most people who have been dealing with a bad situation for awhile generally give even a small thanks when it is cleared up."

Lian then calls the Mop guards to the group. "Have any of you ever seen this man before? He calls himself Krasnaya."

"Krasnaya... that means Red Star or something, up north doesn't it?"

He looks around for a moment. "Maybe if there is another tall building around here we could catch them in a crossfire."

"If we have the time, I want anyone who needs it healed up using the wands if possible." K'Nara says. "We also need to track down where Nikolai is...and Parnoth, too, I suppose, but it's Nikolai that I want first." She spies Gunther with the...very odd object in his hands.

"What in the Wold is that, Ingrge..?" K'Nara asks of the elven weapon mage, not knowing exactly what to make of the item. "Gunther, is this what was around the dragon's neck? And you touched it? And brought it near us? Are you crazy? Do you know what you have done?"

<< dramatic pause>>

Probably nothing at this point, at least you probably won't die anyway.

Without waiting for any answers he turns back to the others.

"K'nara I don't know for certain, but I would be willing t guess that this is Parnoth's second artifact that controls his hidden beasts and was what she used to set those ones on us earlier."

Feeling Gunther's eyes about to pop out of his head and thinking about causing greivious bodily harm to him, Ingrge turns back towards the big man.

In front of the palace, the branches on the ancient tree come alive, stretching and sprouting leaves. The ground immediately beneath it seems to rumble slightly, as roots push downward into the earth.
It takes a slow breath, carbon dioxide in, oxygen out. "I am here to witness," it says through the rustle of newly grown leaves. "Witness justice, and the freeing of Culverwood."

Milo approaches Falin. "If we look inside the palace, there might be some clues as to where the dragons are. I can try and disable any magical traps that await us."
One of the elves from the group of bowmen approaches. "What do you want us to do?"

The palace is the tallest building in town. Sat on top of a small hill, it's also the highest.

As Ingrge looks over the artifact, his experience and knowledge lead him to believe that he is indeed correct about the thing - that it IS one of the talismens. K'Nara might remember the other one when it was in the Tines hands. This one is different in shape.

Mop's guards are noncommital about Krasnaya. "We havent seen this gentleman about town, but I don't know if you've noticed - Mop was very high maintenance. We didn't have time to notice anything." They gather around Bertram, waiting orders.

"Doesn't this mean anything to you?" Krasnaya points out his WLA lapel pin to Lian. "It's a guarantee of trust." The man appears to be getting a little tetchy. The other citizen stood alongside his catches Lian's eye. He says nothing, but he firmly glances away. Twice.

"Ingrge," she says in a controlled voice, "I swear to the gods that I will slice your ears off myself if you're kidding me...this is Parnoth's version of that other artifact?" When the weapon mage nods, the leader of the Emerald Dragons suddenly has a grin that stretches from ear to ear. Gunther loves THIS grin, because it's clearly not a very nice one...no, this grin bodes very eeeevil things with it.

Evil being relative, of course.

"Ingrge, secure that...that...Runic Hedron, willya?" K'Nara says, pulling a name for the artifact out of the blue. "We do NOT want it to fall back into the wrong claws." K'Nara's eyes flicker to the redhead claiming to be a WLA rep.

"You're WLA?" she asks. "Fine. We need to find Nikolai the Red. And Parnoth the Green. In that order, preferably. Can you help with that?"

Bert's spell flows through the group, knitting cuts, staunching blood, paling bruises.

As for the nearby ancient tree, it takes to whispering. Its voices are now many, and are hidden amongst the leaves.
"Parnoth's will should be the same as ours." "But it isn't." "But it should be." "It must be." "He won't listen." "He must!" "Or he will perish." "The forest rules, here." "The forest rules, or he dies." "Or he bends." "He won't bend." "Then he dies." "Tell him."

The tree gives out a sigh that resonates in the ground beneath everyone's feet. And for a moment, it feels as though that sigh is answered and amplified by the distant line of trees to the north.

The Dragons appear to have a significant find on their hands. It's implications are obvious to those who have lived under Parnoth's awful threat, should any harm come to him.

As for Krasnaya, no one seems to be able to ruffle his 'cool'. He does appear to hold a superior attitude, which could mean anything.
"If you're looking for dragons," he says evenly. "I'm guessing that Parnoth is in his lair, up the hill there."

No sounds coming from the palace, as yet.

"Parnoth in his lair. Thanks." K'Nara snorts, turning from the WLA rep and looking to the personnel that just escaped from the palace. "Before we...present ourselves to Parnoth to break the bad news about his bride to him, is there anyone here who's seen Nikolai, knows where that red dragon is, or--at least--tell us what he's looking like these days..?" K'Nara can only recall how the drake looked in dragon form and has no idea how Nikolai looks in humanoid form.

A thick tail covered in green scales sweeps over a pile of gold coins, causing them to scatter and shift like a wave amongst the treasure pile. Even here, tiny twists of growth, roots pushing down through the rock, hang from the ceiling as the might of Culverwood keeps pushing, pushing, pushing.
It was a conspiracy, of course. They were all together - the adventurers, the red dragons, the forest, even Mop had deserted him. Did not one of them understand? Not one?
Of course they didn't.
Massive talons splay out and then curl into a solid, heavy fist. Time to play.
Coins formerly embedded in scales clatter noisily onto the pile and displaced air conjurs a breeze through the cavern. In place of a dragon, a well dressed man is now stood - middle aged, broad-chested and tall, with glittering green eyes and a full head of sandy red hair. Pale features bear signs of a brewing inner storm.
A slight twist of the fingers, and he is gone.

"It was just a guess," Krasnaya says to Ingrge.
No one seems to know the wearabouts of Nikoli, or what he looks like. If suspicions are correct, the dragon has been clever about it; if they're incorrect, a potential ally is being given one heck of an attitude.

Milo's practiced eye senses a trap just inside the palace entrance way. But before he can do anything about it, there is a sound - a deafening bellow of outrage from within. There is someone inside who doesn't seemed too pleased. It is loud enough for everyone else to hear.

"Er, what now?" he asks the others.

There is a moment, as Bert and the guards approach Krasnaya, when there is a distinct possibility of things going sour right outside the palace door. The man's eyes narrow. His nostrils flare.
That moment is averted as K'Nara tells Bert to hold off.
The man's eyes linger on Bert's axe for a moment, then shift toward Ingrge. He nods.
"I'll do that," he tells the scarred elven wizard, his voice even and unruffled, and he backs off. The other citizens are eager to follow him, the bellow coming from the interior of the palace having put paid to any previous bravado on their part.

With Kras and the local folk retreating, in front of the palace are K'Nara, Gunther, Falin, Bert and Ingrge, the ex-mop guards, the palace chef and his assistant, and the elven archers. And a dead red dragon.
Athalorn has a good view from up top, can can see them approach the entrance.

Just inside, Milo approaches an inner archway. He signals back to Lian, and Lian's detect magic reveals a border of runes going right up the side and across the archway - some kind of incendiary magic.

However - the magic appears to wink off abruptly, as if blown out like a candle.
There are footsteps, and from around a corner in the interior, a tall, impressively built man appears. Parnoth's current human face appears quite thunderous.
And an odd thing - he is carrying a charred human skull in each hand.

He looks at Milo. He looks at Lian. He looks at Olana. He looks beyond at the others approaching. He then hurls one of the skulls forward. The object flies past Olana, Lian and Milo like a rocket, and lands on the steps, right at K'Nara's feet.

"Who did that?" Parnoth bellows angrily. "Who??"

The palace chef drops his cleaver. He and his assistant share a glance.
"So that's why the town elders didn't want breakfast," says the chef in a small voice.

One of K'Nara's eyebrows elevates as she looks to the skull and then to the person who threw it.

"Don't look at me..." she drawls, "...when I burn something it's from the inside out..." To illustrate her point, the blade singer jabs Lucia forward in demonstration, twisting the sword slightly in the air, "...and this poor fellow seems to have been roasted from the outside in. However...speaking of roastmasters...have you seen Nikolai? I have...a bone to pick with him."

OOC: isn't Parnoth's right hand/limb still technically gone or missing? In human form he had in its place a golden "hook" that was shaped to look like a roaring dragon.

Thursday January 10th, 2008 9:41:34 PM

Not particulary wanting to anger the dragon in such a close confined space, Olana steps aside and merely bows. As far as she's concerned this wasn't the best place to be right now.

DM Jan
Friday January 11th, 2008 1:24:08 AM

Parnoth gives Olana, Lian and Milo a cold look as he walks past, head tilting occasionally toward those who speak. And he doesn't have anything warmer for those outside, either.

His eyes flip casually toward the roof of the palace, taking in the eagle, and he comes to stand alongside K'nara and Ingrge, looking out past the ancient tree, the fountain and toward the dead dragon.
"Hmmm," he says, the other toasted skull still tucked under one arm, his clawed hand tucked close to his torso.

Bert notes that the guards have spread out as instructed, but they're starting to back up warily and are glancing uneasily at one another. The chef and his assistant look about to have a heart attack on the spot.
The elves are quickly dashing toward and behind Falin, their eyes a mixture of hatred and horror.
Athalorn can see the dire wolf has dashed north and is currently stood sheltered in the shadow of one of the buildings where she can still see what's happening.

The is no fear in this man stood in their midst. Gunther recognises the same attitude he saw in Borden. If there were any uncertainty, any hesitation, any fear, any doubt about what he was, who he was - it was all wiped clean and clear. Of course right now he looks like some tough, son of a tarrasque human, a leige lord with a very expensive arm appendage, firmly in charge of his domain. To anyone who hasn't seen him before, there is no inkling of his true form.

"Nikolai?" he says eventually, his tone almost polite. Under the circumstances, he seems to be taking things awfully well. He sniffs the air and smiles. "That's funny. You know, you asking where he is, and me being able to smell him." His voice hardens and he glares at the Dragon leader. "Right here, I smell his stench. It's right here. Perhaps it should be me asking all the questions, especially with all this mess on my front lawn. You all teaming up on me, K'nara? Hmmm? What did you have in mind? Or is it a surprise?"

Athalorn listens to the conversation below, aware that Parnoth had seen him. The smell of the man? Perhaps that fellow with the red hair was Nicolai after all? But they had all suspected it, all of them taken a closer look? Athalorn takes to the sky, flying high over the courtyard and looking for any other suspicious characters.

Friday January 11th, 2008 3:45:47 AM

"Funny? Funny?" snarls K'Nara, her hazel eyes blazing. "I'm not laughing, Parnoth--I'll be the first to admit I'd love nothing better than to personally slice you into bite-size pieces and give the stray animals of the city their first decent meal in the few hundred years or so that you've...and I use the term very loosely...'ruled' the kingdom...but...I wouldn't want to held responsible for mass poisoning.

"I'd consider myself quite justified--you've tried on two different and very memorable occasions to kill me, and I tend to take that rather personally...but you, at least, kept your murderous attentions to me alone. In that, at least, you were honorable. Nikolai, on the other hand, dared to come to the Saryd Tower--conveniently while most of my family and I were being inducted into the Dragon Consortium. He invaded our home, robbed it of our family's possessions, and--worst of all--murdered treasured members of our family." The seething leader of the group now known as the Emerald Dragons bares her teeth in rage...anger focused not on Parnoth, but on the red dragon of whom she speaks.

"And now you dare to ask me if I would ally myself with that cowardly piece of pandryl pydol??? I'm inclined to run you through for even thinking that! However..." Here the tall human blade singer suddenly smiles (as opposed to baring her teeth), "...I am in need of a favor from you--you see, being merely human, I cannot smell a red dragon, nor tell him when he's in his shapechanged form. Can you please, please, pretty please point him out so that I and my group can send him to join his brothers and sister in the Lands of Rest...assuming that a pandryl pydol such as he actually goes there?"

K'Nara adds a flutter of eyelashes with her request, in spite of the fact that her right hand clenches the hilt of the still-bloodied bastard sword as though she is seriously restraining herself from carrying out her threat of slicing and dicing the great Green Tyrant of the Emerald Kingdom.

OOC: in case it is needed, K'Nara is making a voluntary Diplomacy/Intimidate/Bluff check in an effort to make Parnoth see reason...the result is 20.)

"Is Nikolai here Greenie?" The monk looks around.

"We simply want to congradualate Nikolai on a coup well done. You've lost your rocker and we think Nikolai would make a better king for the kingdom. Hey, a sane king, though evil, is better than one who has lost his touch. Osto! I mean really, that dung heap? We at least have an idea where he stands, being evil that is. We thought you had your kingdom under control, but you let in this userper without a thought. So step aside and let him show himself as true ruler, Parnoth."

Yes, the monk has stepped over the line he usually avoids entirely, but things need resolving. Diplomacy is not one of Lian's strong points.

Bertram catches the signs of his men backing away uneasily. He starts to bark at them but realizes they were not here to take on Parnoth and relaxes. He turns back to the leader and whispers quietly, "You have all acted honorably, This is not your fight my friends, Go with Domi all your days. If you ever make your way back to our home know that you are welcome". He turns back fingering his axe. Not pointing it at anyone but ready if need be. He looks at Parnoth's human form with great interest.

Her head is full of all kinds of emotions as she listens; trying oh-so-very-hard not to laugh at what Lian has said, all the while wondering whether she should bash him on the head to make him shut up. If Parnoth was nuts, then anything could set him off. And he hated elves, anyway.

Parnoth's lofty demeanor appears to suffer a little, as he stands there for a moment, blinking rapidly after the verbal exchange.
Then something happens to get everyone's attention.
Back along the avenue, approximately 70 ft away from the group, Krasnaya and some of the other citizens have been beating a retreat along the avenue away from the palace.
ZING!
A glowing force cage appears right in the midst of them, capturing Kras and two of the other citizens.

Parnoth's uncertainty disappears, and a rather awful smile appears on his face.
"Invaded your home, did you say? Robbed you of your possessions? In my Kingdom?" He nods assertively, and drops the now forgotten remaining skull on the ground. "For that, and for that alone, I shall allow you to kill him. Oh, yes I will."

Athalorn has the best view.
The two captured citizens in the cage are screaming in fright. Not so Krasnaya.
A thin worm of green light streaks from one of his fingers, and the front side of the cage crumbles like dead leaves. the tall, read-headed man steps forth, and begins to change.

It's fast.
A sharp crack of bones.
A snap of huge, blood red wings.

This is what the monk was waiting for. "As you wish, my king!" The elf leers at Parnoth (though he knows that this will be a short lived partnership) and rushes Kras. "I knew you were that coward Nikolai."

"For Domi! For the Kingdom!" His hands light up with emerald flames.

He debates taking the glue from Knara, but decides against it, holding his hand out for a mere moment to Knara... gluing himself to a angry dragon might be fun, but today is no the time to test the theory. Looking like a flapping gerbil glued to a wagon wheel would be embarrassing.

He'd had his back partially turned as he was striding away. After all, no sense in enduring that red's foul breath any more than he had to. Let them all kill one another. Perfect. Those who didn't die, he'd finish off. He could enlist a new group of adventurers, yes, and hone and fashion them personally to his way of thinking. And let that ancient tree burn, too. A sharp lesson to Culverwood and its fanciful notions that it was the power here. Hah! Here, he held the reins of the power! He was finding strength in this, amidst the fire and the chaos and the battle. Now his mind was perfectly clear, and it was time for a fresh start. Oh, this was indeed a day of reckoning, a day when all doubts would be washed aside. A day when -

A sharp, sudden pain splits his thoughts, and sends them skittering off on another track, his bold aspirations now curled up into a whisper laced with dread. Ah, those elves. Why did he despise them so much? Because he knew, didn't he. He knew all this time, through all these passing centuries, that they would be his undoing. He feels a slight, blossoming sensation in his lower back, something malevolent, turning sour and trying to get a grip. It fails. It fails as he knew it would, and he smiles. He turns, pure instinct giving him the direction of his assailant.
Oh, little elf, I shall pin you with a claw, I shall slowly pull off your arms and legs, one by one, then disembowel you and hang you screaming from the palace wall. And I shall do the same to the others, and from there you will all see the forest burn. All of it. I will tolerate no more.

In the midst of the battle against Nikoli, Falin's bow has been aimed elsewhere and the first two arrows hit their mark. Parnoth stops in midstride. He turns. There is a smile on his face, and awful, terrible smile. Still in human form, he takes a step toward the elven bowman.

Then he stops. And abruptly drops to his knees.

A short distance away, the flames coursing through the branches of the ancient tree change colour, becoming green.

Meanwhile!

Poor Athalorn's remains fall lightly to the ground accompanied by a wisp of black smoke. In the midst of death agony, the druid feels himself pulled sharply downward toward the ground, enabling him to see his own tiny corpse drop toward him, before everything turns black.

Lian does his best to keep pummeling Nikoli's hide, while Ingrge hurls another devastating cone of cold at the ice-vulnerable beast. ((Saved for half dam.)) Olana fires, and both Bert and Gunther give it their all, and along with Lian discover the creature has one heck of a tough hide. The only significant threat right now appear to be Ingrge's spells and Falin's arrows.

K'Nara assesses the distances and reckons that in order to be accurate, she needs to be closer.
((Donna, thats a thrown 70' called shot. Use that last round to get your distance, unless K'Nara can throw 70' in any case.))

Distracted by what is happening with Parnoth, Milo sets off in the direction of old greenie, daggers at the ready.

Nikoli brings up a bony arm of a wing and sweeps it rapidly toward Gunther.
Hits AC 55 for 15 dam

The dragon then does it's level best to stomp on those harrying it at ground level, namely Lian and Bertram.
Hits Lian Ac 54 for 17 Dam
Hits Bert AC 59 for 17 Dam

From his position, Gunther can see enormous muscles flexing and bunching across the dragon's back. It's getting ready for take off. So it can gain some advantage, so it can use that breath weapon again.

A smile creeps across his face as he sees Parnoth go down on his knees. His heartbeat quickens. Seeing him go down gives him hope at a free Emerald forest. Falin, seeing the opportunity and that Milo is moving towards Parnoth splits his attacks between the two. He turns and fires his first two at Nikoli and first his last two at Parnoth.

Unsure of Parnoth's plans and willing to bet that he'd be in the fight sooner or later, Lian continues his assault.

He flurries away, if for nothing else, to create distance from Ingrge and Falin. He attempts to step (5ft) to get into a flank with Bert. [attacks don't include flank]

Not exactly sure what he was seeing out of the corner of his eye with Parnoth, Ingrge continues to focus on the Red and thinks of what he should try next and readies his wand yet again drawing it in preparation of adding its power to his spell and pointing his fingers at Nikolai drops a small rock and a pich of dust to the ground. Almost immediately a thin pale green ray streaks from the end of Ingrge's finger to the body of the Red Beast.

Gunther, Lian and Bert would likely have been in range.

Ummm Jan, according to the last map you sent, the dragon is in between Gunther, Lian and Bert. I guess Gunther could have gotten in the way because he's on top, just depends on how high the cone would be.---Nellie

~~Jan~~ Yeah, but Ingrge's in front of all of you - PCs, dragon an' all. As for how high Ingrge's cone is, eh..... 60ft. Let me take a look at the map. If it's misleading I'll certainly let you have that one. It wasn't my bestest ever, LOL.

Bertram grunts feeling the clawed foot of Nikolai crushing down upon him. He suddenly comes to a decision and grasps the leg and quickly starts climbing to the back of the creature. One way or another he would find a weak spot on the dragon somewhere.

In order to have made her throw, then, K'Nara would have had to move and then throw, as she needs to be within fifty feet of a target at a minimum.

Thinking quickly, K'Nara sees that she is too far away to simply toss the vial, so she activates her Boots of Speed instead, trying not to let her horror and anger overwhelm her as Athalorn's eagle form is charred before the entire group.

Then she charges Nikolai, her bastard sword flashing briefly as it catches a ray of sun on her approach, the blade singer's scream of defiance and outrage absorbed by the spell of Silence that she carries with her.

OOC: I'm doing this more or less on the fly as I have Real Life issues looming right now--I rolled for K'Nara, her charge hits AC42 and qualifies as a Crit Hit for her sword; the Crit Hit roll also hits AC42, so I rolled a third possible attack roll which hits AC33. The damages are as follows: Charge hit does 13hpd; 1st Crit Hit adds another 18hpd and the 2nd Crit Hit, if it hits Nikolai's AC, would add another 12hpd.

If the cone of Cold connects

Teeth chatter as the cone explodes into his body, and Gunther grunts as the wing slams into him. Fly away...fly away and save yourself!! The primal part of his brain viciously protests for self preservation. But the others are counting on him... Grabbing a hold of the dragon, Gunther activates his healing tattoo, healing a little of the damage done to him.

If the dragon is in between Gunther and the cone

Growling in anger, the warrior brings his sword down in rapid succession on the dragon. Only one strike is able to penetrate the creature's thick hide doing minimal damage. (AC42 for 18)

The Emerald Dragons continue their bloody and brutal assault.

Another spell from Ingrge snakes across the creature's hide, while Lian, Olana and Gunther do their utmost to wear him down. K'Nara's firey blade slams hard into the dragon's chest, adding to bitter, cruel and decisive arrow wounds.
Scales brittle with ice damage crack and snap, as Nikoli the red dragon rears up, and his enormous wingspan stretches across the avenue, putting nearly everything into shadow. Brother Bertram tries to get a grip as Nikoli takes to the air, but his hands slip, and the beast rises with a terrifying scream that sets everyone's ears ringing.

But it's too late.
Blood belches forth from the dragon's ruined chest, and a partially disintegrated wing fails to carry the great dragon any further than the palace. He's already dead as he drops right on top of the building, and the roof, unable to bear the weight, caves in with a splintering crash.
The palace walls bend inward, and for a moment it almost looks as though the palace is trying to swallow the great body of the dragon. But in the fog of rising dust and debris, both palace and dragon are in ruin.

In the palace forecourt, the ancient tree still burns - hotter and hotter - the flames are a brilliant emerald green. About 25 feet to the south of it, Parnoth is still on his knees.

He appears to be struggling, and the two arrows in his back appear to have split and grown vine-like tendrils that are stretching and embedding themselves into the ground. Having gained purchase, they seem hell bent on pulling him backward toward the earth.

Parnoth, still in human form, falls back, and his hand and gold claw spread frantically across the ground as he tries to regain his balance.
"Help me!" he barks.

Back out on the avenue, the huge dire wolf pads softly away from her refuge and comes to sit quietly alongside Athalorn's corpse.

Falin AC 23 HP 66 Protection from Fire 0/120  d20+38=57 d20+38=41 d8+8=13 d20+33=40 d8+8=10 d20+28=36 d8+8=14

Falin, hair singed from the fire attack, is oblivious to all that is going on around him. Only that Parnoth is now struggling against some unknown force. Perhaps the forest itself has had enough of the menace he was. Falin approaches and knocks an arrow, "Parnoth", says Falin calmly, "If I ever thought you could change I might help you, but you have hurt and destroyed too much. I have no choice but to help you along on this new chapter of your life." He fires into the man known as Parnoth, his eyes devoid of any feeling.

Unaware of Parnoth's plight, K'Nara stands, panting as she eyes the corpse of the red dragon that had taken so much from her family--from the group of people now known as the Emerald Dragons--and then she spits in the general direction of the drake's corpse. The brilliant emerald flames that are consuming the great animated tree catch her eye next: another death to add to Nikolai's overfull tally--unless...

K'Nara kneels, putting the bespelled bottle of Sovereign Glue on the ground and then stands, walking quickly out of the range of the spell (towards the ruined palace) as she uses her newly-freed hand to poke into the top of her magic haversack. When she removes her hand from it, there is a beaten-up old brass lamp in it, which she proceeds to rub using her right forearm--K'Nara can't use her right hand, as it still has Lucia within it, streaked with the blood of the Hands of Love cleric as well as the gore from Nikolai.

OOC: I assume we are still in combat rounds as Falin is finishing off Parnoth (ouchies!)--if this is the case, then K'Nara may only get as far as moving and getting out the lamp. The rubbing of the lamp and the subsequent summoning of the efreet within may take additional time...however, K'Nara got a 23 to see if she gets an insane efreet or 3 wishes--meaning it's just a "run-of-the-mill" efreet this time.

Deactivates boots.

"I have to agree with our friend Falin." Says the monk, who is approaching Parnoth. "I believe it was the Tines who gave you the first chance, the Plats who gave the second and took you claw as warning... now, it'll be the Emeralds, the true Greens of this Kingdom, who take the life a true tyrant.
I am sorry it have come to this."

The elven hand of Domi comes to a stop in front of Parnoth. What's about to happen is nothing less than Lian would expect of Parnoth... brutality, and humiliation. Is this right? Not knowing what actually transpired. No, he wouldn't hesitate to destroy us. Thinks the elf.
"Your old Parnoth. Beaten. Have Courage." He smiles then clobbers Parnoth in the head. (AC 31, for 12 damage)

Then more arrows thud into him. The monk flinchs at the sound.

Seeing the Parnoth situation is in someone's hands, Ingrge calls over to Bertram.

"Brother Bertram, I don't suppose you would happen to have a ressurection spell handy for our fallen comrade?"

"K'nara you want I should go inside and see if he's really dead?"

The warrior blinks as the red drops to the ground dead. And just when things were getting fun... With a little huff he floats down to take a look at the red when he hears Ingrge's comment. In all the commotion he hadn't caught sight of Athalorn, let alone been made aware of his fate. His face crumbling like a worn statue, Gunther runs over to his fallen comrade, his eyes filling with tears.
