Mercenaries! [DM SteveK] Friday January 11th, 2008 6:14:51 PM
A day dawns like most of the recent days here in Gateway Downs and the town of Heranmar; clouds threatening rain. Yet it hasn't actually rained in about a week, so that has to be a positive indicator, yes?
Around noon, the peaceful activities of the town is interrupted by the tramp of many feet. Coming down the eastern road towards the walled town, the White Company of the Wolf marches smartly. Each of the 200 Warriors is in step, tower shield and scale armor, pikes on shoulder. A report of fife and drum is leading the van, and a gusty song is in the air.
The people of Heranmar are worried, and the hastily summoned watch closes and mans the repaired gates against the force. Looking down from the walls, it doesn't appear that the leader is all that worried.
The company marches smartly around the town and quickly pitches camp on the south fields. The warriors split into teams and soon tents are in straight lines, cookfires, latrines, and corral is up, and a breast-high square earthwork surrounds the camp with two entrances at the north and south.
Walking before the south gates, a half-orc in a gleaming breastplate is flanked by a thin human with two short swords and a gray robed woman who looks akin to the old cleric of the Five Crones. "I am Captain Gheralh", announces the half-orc in a commanding voice that has been easily heard across many a battlefield, "Our good intentions are to rest a couple of days before moving south to a contract with Hook City. We will pay for fodder, food, and field, and we invite the people of Heranmar to attend our practices and camp in goodwill. As long as the citizens don't get too close, they are free to watch."
(ooc: Quinn is currently in Threshold and Randall is at Hook City.)
Kazak Friday January 11th, 2008 11:52:13 PM
Taking time from his business inquirey's the dwarf enjoys a meal at the Inn where Brina works.
Hearing the noise coming down from the Eastern road Kazak quickly gathers his battle gear and rushes towards the gate which the watch has closed and taking up defensive positions .
"Nice work everyone .... your training is improving nicely " praises Kazak as he climbs the stairs to get atop the wall to get a better veiw of of the activity.
Standing tall (for a dwarf )atop the walls Kazak listens to speaker .... waiting amoment before replying " Welcome Captain Gheralh and you men ... thank you for your forth rightness ... we'll send someone out to see what your needs are so we can come to agreement" replys the dwarven warrior as he also waves in acknowledgement
Watching the well trained mercenary's make camp with military precision the 4'1" dwarf nods at their expertise
Turning to the watch men and women " see what teamwork can do ?? " smiles Kazak
Quinn Saturday January 12th, 2008 7:19:52 AM
Quinn passes out the vampire kits to his followers and reviews the best ways to keep a vampire or vampire spawn at bay. "Remember to stay on the Hallowed ground each night and keep your kit with you at all time once the sun sets. These are dangerous times."
Quinn will also take Bruce, Herman and Orville with him to check on the caravan's progress.
Quinn is more than pleased to hire the journeyman arcitect. "We will be building something here that goes beyond brick and morter, but they certainly help."
Quinn will also visit Henamar and pass out vampire kits to his new found friends. "One never know when you might need a bit of help fighting vampires, especially now that my father is taking such an active roll in the destruction of all that is good."
Once Quinn finds Savin he will inquire "When did Henamar raise an army and why? Were their vampires spotted?"
Savin Saturday January 12th, 2008 10:30:18 AM
Savin will gladly head off to watch the mercanaries practice, approving of their organization and precision. Savin will seek out the half-orc Captain and request an audience with him. Savin will keep a sharp eye out noting details. Then general races of the troops? How they seem to interact with each other and how prevelant are the officers?
If granted an audience, Savin will bow low to the mercenary and introduce himself. "My name is Savin, new resident of the town of Heranmar. I was wondering if you had a list of provisions your troops would need, how long you plan on staying and what trouble the Hook City is having to hire mercenaries?"
Durgan Saturday January 12th, 2008 11:31:30 AM
Durgan will travel out in full gear with Savin, Kazak and any others to meet with the mercenary captain.
"Best to show the town has strong defenders. Just in case."
Durgan is pleased to see the readiness of the improving town guard. But he is happy they are not to be tested yet. An experienced and well-trained army using a lot of teamwork would be more than they could handle yet.
He smiles to see Trace teaching some of them to use their dogs as an extension of their abilities. Back home, the tunnel-fighters used badgers to sniff out goblins.
Peerimus and Yorrick Saturday January 12th, 2008 1:42:05 PM
Peerimus and Yorrick awaken to the steady thrum of the marching boots of the small army and both make thier way to the edge of the wood. Yorrick grunts and Peerimus nods with a grunt himself. He is still in his bear form as he almost always is at night with Yorrick. 'Interlopers? Danger?' 'I do not believe so Yorrick. Ah yes they are setting camp not siege. Do we go? Yes we do, but first we inform Wanderwood Peerimus turns and, with Yorrick righ behind him, head deeper into the wood and to the hallowed Grove. Peerimus tells Wander Wood and the Live Oak of the men outside the wood and that he and Yorrick will go and explain the rules to the army. Peerimus informs both great trees that they are to protect this forest. Encourage intruders to leave and use force if necessary as you deem it.
Peerimus shifts to human form well inside the tree line so as not to be seen doing so. Taking his shield and staff, he moves out to the gates of Hernamar, skirting around the camp as it is being constructed. He is still skirting when the captain speaks. "See?" he says to Yorrick quietly. The bear grunts again and bumps his head into Peerimus's side. "More often than not I would say."
Hearing Kazak, Peerimus raises his hand in small salute and picks a spot on the wall to lean against. Looking out towards the captain and his two sub commanders. Peerimus gives an exaggerated nod, so that they know it as an acknowledgement to what was just said and waits for the gates to open and whoever it will be to come out. Stepping lively to fall in with them, "Savin, Durgan blessed morning to you. Quite the company."
Arriving at the Captain's tent, Yorrick sits just outside and as Savin bows, Peerimus gives a short nod. Peerimus adds that the woods are not to entered for the safety of the captains good men.
Firn'gaer d20+25=41 d20+25=35 Sunday January 13th, 2008 4:58:12 AM
After returning from the Catacombs, Firn'gaer will spend a couple of days learning the scrolls he purchased - Tongues and Arcane Sight. Then he will make them permanent on himself as well as Read Magic.
[Learning Tongues and Arcane Sight - Spellcraft DC 41 & 35]
Assuming Firn'gaer has finished with the Catacombs and scribing/making permanent his spells, he will be on the wall, watching, when the army camps and the captain chats with whoever is in charge. He figures if something happens, he will best be able to defend the town if his presence is not directly known. But after his fears are eased by the words of their Captain, Firn'gaer immediately goes to look for the others, starting with their favorite tavern.
Jurgen and Shay Sunday January 13th, 2008 6:10:15 PM
Jurgen happily takes Holly's offer of a room. He'll most definitely share stories with her whenever he has a few moments and, although as much as he likes to hear himself speak, he probably wouldn't spend a year at it since there is so much to deal with. Vampires and liches and mercenaries (Oh my!).
There was no bad blood from Jurgen about mercenaries. He had been one, both technically and literally. But they made him uneasy. Two hundred warriors, well trained and well armed, camped outside of Heranmar... They could do good things, protect people and stave off evil. But he remembers the rule about armies: put enough people with the ability to kill something together and they will. With the memorable corollary of: just hope it isn't you.
As he heads out with the others to meet the Captain, he sends Shay above to scout and report back anything noteworthy or worry-some.
Jurgen nods at Savin's questions, although most notably at the last. Curiosity more than anything fuels his inquiry. Not to mention the guarantee that the city will be left alone. "Perhaps I should add an introduction from the rest of us. We," he waves his hand to those of the group that are there, "are the Children of Chaos. You might say that we are some of the protectors of Heranmar."
The Mailed Fist [DM Steve] Monday January 14th, 2008 1:54:16 PM
(ooc: Randall is still in Hook City since no one has gone to get him.)
The Children of Chaos all quickly come to the South Gate and ensure the mercenaries are not ready to mount an immediate attack. Soon, Selenie Quendeck is there along with two fellows that seem to be part of her ad hoc Heranmar Council; Bunwit the Fisherman and Harrin the merchant. A quick huddle is had before the three (along with any of the Children of Chaos) leave a postern gate and meet the mercenaries. Only Firn'gear elects to stay on the walls, allowing the height to give him a vantage point if necessary.
When the party goes out to meet the mercenary group, they are met by Captain Gheralh (half-orc), and five others with him. He introduces his second, Javin Two-blades, the Crones Cleric Mahsa, and his Quartermaster, Mister Smeed (who all politely incline thier heads at the appropriate moment). The other two are not mentioned, but their presence can be guessed at. The first who stands close to Mr. Smeed is a mousy looking man with an ink stain on his right index finger and a pack of scrolls on his back. The second is in similar armor to Captain Gherahl and carries a white banner on a T-shaped pole. Catching the wind, the banner snaps out and emblems are for all to see: a grey thundercloud is ridden by a slavering wolf, and both are superimposed over a silver gauntlet closed in a fist.
"Ah, well, I can see that you have great champions living in the area", Gheralh says wryly. "Rest assured, I will ensure my children won't cause trouble. After all, it would be difficult for me to get a company hired without a company!" The Mailed Fist Captain laughs at his own joke. "Come, let my Quatermaster work with your merchants to buy what we need and I shall give you a tour."
The Quartermaster and his aide go into the town with Herrin to buy things. Masha excuses herself and moves purposely southward to visit the stones of the Five Crones. The others lead Selenie and the Children of Chaos through the nearly erected camp.
Captain Gheralh keeps a running commentary on the tents, sanitation, distribution of work and other necessary things in a well-oiled group; and it looks like these mercenaries work together very well indeed. "Now, the contract between me and Hook City is information I don't give to just anyone, hey? But my Thunderstorm Company was hired by the city itself to assist thier own guard. There seems to be trouble brewing between the elf and dwarf merchants, you see." It is apparent that if you don't see that Gheralh isn't going to give away more information.
Soon, the group passes an open area that is directly in front of a couple of large tents. Gheralh explains one is the infirmary and the other his quarters slash planning tent. Directly in front of that tent is a line of nine people standing up with thier arms and head locked in stocks. A light suddenly strikes within Gheralh's black eyes, and he waves an arm at the nine prisoners. "Now, here is a problem that you may be able to help me with..."
"These nine are my scout fist, but thier bickering and loner mentality cost the life of my sergeant on a recent mission. I was thinking of conducting a courts martial... (and here several of the prisoners visibly shudder), but with your help, they may be rehabilitated."
The Captain turns to the assembled Children of Chaos. "A powerful group like you have been working together and guarding each others backs for years. Can you do me the favor of taking these individuals out on a patrol and teach them the meaning of teamwork?"
Savin Monday January 14th, 2008 4:51:55 PM
Savin sees the prisoners and immediately frowns until Gerhalh's explaination. Savin sighs and says, "Our next mission is to take on some undead that has been menacing that area and possibly a strange sort of golem that is hunting it. The undead is a lich, which isn't prey for the normal soldier to tackle. Can these men handle themselves against that sort of foe?"
Savin eyes the group and then with a gleam in his eye looks back towards the half orc Captain. "How about a test? Release 3 of them and let them battle me. If they can best me, then they can come along. If they can't, then why not put them into service of our town for a couple of months where we can watch over them and really teach them about team work.
Mind you, I am far from our best warrior but if they can beat me, they will have to use team work!"
Quinn Monday January 14th, 2008 5:23:02 PM
Quinn is glad to have come on the tour as he neds catching up on the situation. "Oh this could be fun. I will heal and wounds that occur, AFTER the combat."
Quinn looks over at the commander of the camp and the entire mailed fist emcampment "Brother, I trust you have ample holdy water, stakes and garlic ready to combat all the vampires."
Quinn waits for the comanders response and goes about twirling his goatee all the while looking for a place to sit to watch the up coming combat.
Durgan Monday January 14th, 2008 6:23:39 PM
"Savin I think I'd rather field test em. I don't think the whole lot of them together would give you cause to so much as quicken yer breath. Let's take em out and see what they're made of."
Posting Report For: Monday January 14th, 2008 6:48:25 PM
Game #4 Children of Chaos For the week of January 7, 2008
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+16=24 d20+7=11 Monday January 14th, 2008 9:05:24 PM
Peerimus looks over at the nine and grimaces slightly and then comments. "A lack of teamwork which results in a death warrants this Captain?" Peerimus casts an eye over the nine to pick up reactions at what they are likely overhearing. [Spot 24 Sense motive 11] he does not press any issue he is contemplating, but simply wrinkles his nose slightly.
The druid does not trust the captain, something here smells wrong and he simply does not like it. Savin speaks up and a smirk arrives quickly on his face and Peerimus nods in agreement to Durgan. The druid glances a questioning look at Quinn, "Vampires Quinn? Have you been in the sacremental wine this morning? There aren't any vampires within a day of here. Do you have some new information you need to share?"
Quinn has Peerimus's full attention now and the Captain and companions all but forgotten.
Kazak Monday January 14th, 2008 11:51:15 PM
Finding himself falling into his brothers footsteps ... Kazak quickens his steps to walk next to him to show solidarity.
Keeping quiet as the others talk ... the dwarven warrior eyes survey the mercenary company ....and the 1/2 Orc's officers.... as he listens to Captain Gheralh chatter.
Getting the news of the possible court martial of the mercenary scouts the dwarf shakes his head but understands the life of a soldier is not easy.
Speaking up as options are bantered about of the possible training patrol " I like not that ... perhaps having them train and teach the local watch what real soldiers do and how they do it .... i'm sure what they lack in training they'll make up with enthusiasm and zeal ... something that maybe your scouting fist lacks .... should show them what real fire inside of them should be " adds Kazak " should help both groups "
Trace Tuesday January 15th, 2008 2:13:15 AM
Trace is not sure what to think of the situation and is questioning the reason for our invlovement in the training of this group that comes from out of nowhere. "He thinks to his bow, what is the true intentions of this group, do they have any ill will towards us?
(ooc: more to come later, long work day)
Jurgen and Shay Tuesday January 15th, 2008 2:52:56 AM
"Savin, I'm not entirely sure that some of these grunts could best me in hand-to-hand combat." He gives a wicked grin "Although I'd be glad to watch you duel them. As for Randall... I've no way of getting him or even of getting word to him. Not with any speed, anyway. It would be a long flight and returning him with him would be equally long."
Whether or not Jurgen senses Peerimus' distrust, he certainly feels the same. The man may have secrets, that did not bother the sorcerer. The problem for him was the casualness mercenaries had with murder. Jurgen had killed before, but not in this way. Life was sacred. 'Be careful, boyo. Peerimus may start teaching you the druidic ways if you start thinkin' like that.' But life was sacred. Then again, there may be a problem of understanding here. Whether the lives of the men were at risk or not. And so Jurgen pipes up.
"The scout serves as the eyes of a group. They are usually first and sometimes that importance causes arrogance. Yet a good scout must always remember that they are but one part of the whole. A scout may have hawk-eyes, but they are not like the hawk. They are not a solitary creature. And perhaps this is a lesson we could teach." To the Children alone he mutters. "But if you do not wish to, I will not do it alone. That would defeat the purpose, no?"
Quinn (Second Illegal post) Tuesday January 15th, 2008 9:08:45 AM
Quinn looks at Durgan "Did we not just have enough trouble because of poor Tiera. Do you want that to happen many times over. We seem to be magnets for trouble. If you get in danger again someone may have to fireball as opposed to Gargul's Holy Word and the result may be the same as before or worse. They must prove themselves before we take them as charges."
Quinn raises an eyebrow at Peerimus "I have it on good account, The High Priest of Gargul at Pleateau City, that my father, the vampire cleric that rallies powerful undead to his cause is seeking to destroy me and my followers and anyone associated with me. I think the lich may not be in the area by coincidence. That is why I passed out the vampire kits to everyone. Be ready and always keep your eyes open." Quinn taps the eye tatoos below his own and his holy symbol, the ever seeing eye of Gargul.
Firn'gaer Tuesday January 15th, 2008 11:56:40 AM
After there is no more possibility of hostilities at the wall, Firn'gaer heads back to the tavern for a warm meal and a cold drink. Whatever it is that the other are going to talk about is most likely warmongering, and therefore is no care for a wizard. If it is important, they will find him.
Hook City [DM Steve] Tuesday January 15th, 2008 1:41:18 PM
Randall has a plesant week and successfully takes care of all business.
Disposition of Some Scouts [DM SteveK] Tuesday January 15th, 2008 1:59:35 PM
Captain Gheralh raises a shrewd eyebrow and keeps the conversation going with the Children of Chaos. "See?" he speaks, loud enough to hear at the stocks and a nearby growing group of onlookers, "this is the first sign of a strong team. They are independant but talk over the mission before starting. They don't run in blind." The heroes can easily tell this speech is more for the audience and prisoners than the Children. Peerimus can tell the audience is feeling the prisoners are, so far, getting light treatment for the failing of a mission and causing the death of thier leader.
Bringing his voice to a normal conversational tone, the half-orc continues. "You don't want this group teaching your watch, they can't even stop bickering right in the middle of a scouting mission! And while your suggestion of beating the snot out of my squad is appealing to me, master monk, it will only show them what NOT to do. It will give them no good POSITIVE examples of teamwork."
The Captain continues while eyeing the nine prisoners. "The oath every member of the Mailed Fist takes when joining is to 'swear to Serve the Fist, Live for the Fist, Die for the Fist'. I can hang each of them for cowardice for what they have done, but will probably just give them 50 lashes..." He looks thoughtful.
Meanwhile the nine prisoners are all awake and staring in various attitudes of hope and sullenness. There are four human males, one human female, two half-elfs (male and female), a male elf and a male dwarf.
Other Actions [DM SteveK] Tuesday January 15th, 2008 2:07:22 PM
Gheralh is mildly interested in this man in black who talks about vampires. "We've got percautions for those types of encounters." is all he will say.
Trace thinks at his bow, which feels out and then replies. There doesn't seem to be any danger here, my brother.
Firn'gear takes leave of the wall and moves off for a nice lunch. Once at the INN, Chester is more than conspicuous, obviously hoping for a little information on what is happening on the south pasture.

Kazak Tuesday January 15th, 2008 5:20:46 PM
Eyeing the nine prisonors as Captain Gheralh responds to various options bantered about " 50 lashes huh .... well somebody died for their bickering so i would say they getting off easy " growls Kazak " but hanging them would be a little much "
"So what exactly happened to their sergeant ?" inquires the 4'1" dwarf
Kazak searches their faces for their reaction if their Captain tells the tale ..... locking eyes with the lone dwarf and giving a slight nod of acknowledgement to a fellow dwarf
Randall Tuesday January 15th, 2008 9:37:31 PM
ooc> Hook City is as good a place as any. Hate to leave gang. Maybe Randall and Fluffykins the wonder familiar will be back one day. Have fun and play hard.
Peerimus and Yorrick Wednesday January 16th, 2008 9:02:12 AM
Peerimus nods to Quinn on the further explanantion. "Good work then." he adds then, "We shall need to work on your geographic considerations of what is Here and of what is elsewhere." A small and rare smile touches the druids face and he turns back to the other matter at hand. Not so much about the nine, for really Peerimus does not see how the most powerful and disorganized group of adventurers to ever share common goals could teach military scouting teamwork. No it was why the captain was going and the recent view Peerimus had of the future of this land. The elf and dwarf war might be starting.
Peerimus looks to Durgan Jurgen Trace, all the rest. "I am unsure what we might teach a military scouting unit on teamwork. We move with a very different purpose when we do." he looks to the Captain, "We will discuss the matter and return an answer shortly." Peerimus turns to the city gates and gives a wave for the others to follow.
The Druid heads inside and towards the INN. "We should have a quick discussion for ideas on how and if we want to do this and having it in front of them would not be the most prudent location." Peerimus quickly explains.
Peerimus gives Firngaer a quick fill in and then asks "So let's have ideas and thoughts on the matter."
Jurgen and Shay Wednesday January 16th, 2008 1:15:19 PM
Jurgen gives nod to the Captain as they leave. He would hear from them soon enough. While returning to the INN, Jurgen plays with words in his head. He knew he wanted to help, but he wasn't sure if he could articulate it properly. So he remains silent until his thoughts are gathered and they are sitting down together.
"Peerimus, I understand your... hesitance in us trying to teach anything. We may not be experts on the idea of teamwork," Jurgen laughs at the understatement, "especially myself. But something I've learned while away is that we won't always be here. Tieria was lucky. Gargul said that Sly was gone. We've no word of Shiraz or Sir Thomas. Ilsidur too. They could be dead too." He doesn't want that thought to sink in, but has a hard time dancing around it. "What happens when the Children are all gone? We don't even have to be dead, but preoccupied. These scouts may not be adventurers. They may have no mark like our own. But at some point, we're going to have to consider the fact that something wicked this way comes. And I don't know how often the Consortium makes their way to our part of the Wold. Sooner or later the Southern Continent is going to need more than us, no matter how powerful we are. And I suppose that's my rationale for at least trying."
He waits for the group to make up their minds before continuing on. If they decide they don't want to, he will accept it and be quiet. Otherwise, he'll move onto the question of how.
"As long as we're doing a patrol of a nearby area, I think we are suited to this task. If Gheralh expects us to plan some elaborate training system for them, we'll need more time than we have. Although I have little doubt in my mind that he has an idea for where we can go."
(OOC: Later Randall!)
Trace Wednesday January 16th, 2008 4:07:50 PM
Trace turns from the orc and walks to Peerimus, no evil intentions seen here, I am headed for the catacombs, Hollar if you need me.
Private Conversations [DM SteveK] Wednesday January 16th, 2008 4:07:51 PM
With no other open courses of action, the Children of Chaos retire to the town for a conference and discussion. Captain Gheralh doesn't seem annoyed at this and actually seems pleased that the group isn't arguing in front of strangers. "I'll keep them cooling thier heels until you heroes give an answer. I'm good either way, just thinking that you may save me some retraining time here."
The group is now in the INN and Chester gives them an area relatively isolated for thier conversation.
Chester does give the group a letter and said it came this morning from Hook City. The letter mentions that Randall is engrossed in a huge magical project and will be devoting his time in the forseeable future to the Star Mage Guild. He is certain that magical power isn't lacking with Firn'gear and the returned Jurgen with the Children. (ooc: Yves, I'll keep Randall as per usual Wold rulings; no playing him without your permission; always sufficiently available to be used by you. Thanks for helping me be a better DM! :)
Quinn is also feeling the need to get closer to home and fort up his community in Threshold.
Quinn Wednesday January 16th, 2008 5:35:03 PM
Quinn looks doubtful at the half orc Captain's logic regarding his scouts and his lack of enthusiam regarding vampire defense.
Quinn heads back with the others to Henranmar and the Inn. Quinn addresses Peerimus "I am getting the impression that you may want to assist the Captain of the Mailed Fist. If that is so Brother, I may have to excuse myself for a bit as I must attend to serious vampire defense of my compound in Threshold."
Quinn looks to the other Children of Chaos "I do not want to leave you Brothers and COusins, but I do have charges to take care of. Several of you have visited my compound in Threshold. All are free to join me at my table there for the hospitality or if you need an occasional blessing from Gargul, just nothing regarding bringing back the dead."
Quinn singles out Durgan, Kazak and Savin "You three are the front line of the Children of Chaos and I want to bestow some of Gargul's blessings on each of you to help keep you safe on the front lines."
Quinn will cast Imbue with spell ability on Savin, Kazak, and Durgan.
Choose one: lessor restoration, cure moderate, resist energy (pick type), aid
Choose two: Cure light, protection from evil, shield of faith, hide from undead, entropic shield.
Each will be cast at 13th level. Quinn will explain each spell to the three and then cast the appropriote spells as the choose.
Quinn will move to each of his new found friends and shake their hands and then say to all "It has been an experience traveling the Wold with each of you and especially the Koshe Mar. I am sure all of you will be well as Gargul will keep his eye on you. Be safe and watch out for undead and most defiantely, my Father."
Quinn will teleport back to Threshold mumbling as he prepares "Have to cast concecrates, prepare stakes and garlic, and...'pop'" The Cleric of Gargul is gone.
Durgan Wednesday January 16th, 2008 9:25:27 PM
OOC- to those leaving the game- Peace Out! and Happy Gaming! Oh, and try to bring a little Chaos to your new game! heeheheheh.
OOC- on the spells, are they one time use? and then gone? Durgan picks: resist energy, protection from evil, and shield of faith.
Durgan seems a bit more relaxed back at the Inn, with an ale in his hand. "Ahhhh. The stuffiness of politics makes me anxious. As fer the scouts, mebbe we should meet them?"
"Quinn, what are ye tryin ta do? Turn me into a durned magic user?" A smile can be seen under Durgan's beard as he extends his hand. "Ye can call me 'brother' anytime."
Savin Wednesday January 16th, 2008 10:39:40 PM
Savin bows low to Quinn thanking him for his spells. He will take lesser restoration, hide from undead and protection from evil.
He looks at Peerimus and says, "Why are we being saddled with these men? Don't we have a lich to kill? Do we have time to train mercanaries. If they want to stay behind and become part of our militia and settle here than I welcome them, but why get involved otherwise?"
Kazak Wednesday January 16th, 2008 11:20:36 PM
Back at the Inn Kazak finds a chair to settle into ... ordering a hot cup of tea as it is still just past noon he sips the hot drink as he listens to the conversation about what to do next.
"I'm with Savin here .... we don't work for the mailed fist .... let them train their own men ... i an't gonna trek thru woods as a chaparone to their scouts "
"But then again i ain't crazy about chasing a lich .... what other options do we have ??... didn't you have an idea " asks the dwarf of Peerimus
Afterwards the dwarf thanks the mighty cleric of Gargul " wish you and your followers best of luck in building your temple .... and thanks for the magical spell " adds Kazak as he steps over and shakes Quinns hand (resist energy - fire)
Laughing at Durgans new found desire to become a spellcaster " heh brother ... don't expect to hide in da back when we battle " grins Kazak
Quinn (Seond Illegal Post) Thursday January 17th, 2008 9:01:27 AM
Just before leaveing Quinn will remind Kazak, Durgan and Savin "Brother and Cousins, Gargul's blessing are one time use items and will remain as long as I live. Just ask for Gargul's blessing and you will have it."
------------------------------
OOC: Chris/Kazak you have to pick one 2nd AND 2 first level spells.
Firn'gaer Thursday January 17th, 2008 1:43:04 PM
Firn'gaer will fill Chester in on what little information he know before the others arrive back at the tavern.
When Peerimus arrives and fills in the conversation with the Captain, Firn'gaer cannot help himself but laugh at the idea that he and the others are going to teach teamwork. The notion even wakes Rufus from his leisure, and the rat's squeak sound as if even he is laughing.
His tone changes as there is mention of a possible vampire or even a group of them in the area. "The lich can wait. If there even the possiblity of vampires anywhere near, and apparently on the move, we need to check it out, if only to be thorough." He takes a draw on this pipe and a drink of warm hard cider. "As for 'team-training', I'm against it. Well, at least not training anyone while we hunt vampires. If our martial friends want to teach tactics, let's find something a little less dangerous like giants or rapke. I don't want to be baby-sitting when we tackle the possible vampires."
Jurgen and Shay Thursday January 17th, 2008 2:09:39 PM
"Seems like I've been outvoted," Jurgen replies to the group. "So be it. As for what next? I'm more anxious about the lich than the vampire, although neither makes me want to get up and dance. Quinn seemed to think it would come to him and be for him to deal with. That being said, neither a vampire nor lich should be allowed to live long if we know where they are at. But if that is our intent, we should move fast. Find out where either, or both, are at and destroy them with all possible haste."
Jurgen waits for the rest of the Children to have their say and, if no one else has, then offers to speak with Captain Gheralh and apologize on behalf of the group. "I'll tell him that we have pressing issues to deal with and are unable to help out."
Peerimus Thursday January 17th, 2008 2:39:26 PM
Peerimus smirks at Jurgen. "I find the irony of what the good captain said to nearly be uncontrollable in my amusement. That said I was just wanting to not have this conversation in front of him and them. Not that I am opposed to doing this and for many of the reasons you just laid out. Also, buy helping them, we would help ourselves become closer as a team. Though again, I am not sure how to go about it."
"Firngaer has a fine point. I will certainly not be taking those men if we were to do so, anywhere near anything that could be dangerous. Vampires and liches are quite high on that list. As too if there are any around, I can determine within 14 miles on the morrow. Having communed several times over the past few days though, i am pretty sure what the results will be, but I will do it. I feel Quinn is just being a bit zealous again in that regard.."
Peerimus nods to Jurgen, "I have to agree with the others as well. Thank you for volunteering and what you plan to say seems quite adaquate. Leave out talk of vampires and such. Before Tieria sought us out, we were speaking of taking a tour through the surrounding area. A several week round trip to touch on the outlying communities. Dre Moria and the lich are far beyond this conceived path. It will however be putting us in that direction. I think we should continue with this."
"Here is Heranmar. Beyond the Grey Tooth Mountains lie the Lands of Legend. Also known as Dre Moria. We take the Eastern Rd to Trade Road and then south to Fort Wayfarer. Then back and up South road to home. Despite Quinn exuberance and the fact that yes vampires and liches need to be destroyed. We also need to know the people and land that surround what we are to call home."
Trace Thursday January 17th, 2008 3:47:11 PM
Trace gets up from the table after Peerimus lays out the headed direction and moves for the door.
Looking back, "I will get my horse and prepare for travel, my feet are getting itchy. As for the scouts, I suggest they put them in a brig till we get back and then we will have a summer camp for them." Trace cracks a smile not really expecting an answer continues out the door to make arrangements.
Conversations [SteveK] Thursday January 17th, 2008 10:10:23 PM
At the INN the CoC go about talking of the possible courses of action.
Before that begins in earnest, Quinn announces that he feels a higher calling to prepare for vampires and that he must part company with the Children. Yet before he does, he gives a final gift to his brothers. (ooc: Kazak, Durgan, and Savin have Imbue Spell Ability for 3ea spells as identified by Quinn. Please choose and add to Character Sheet. One time use only. They will also vanish if Quinn is ever killed.)
For possible Children actions...
Lich in Dre Moria. What the Children know is a name that the Marut gave and the place of Dre Moria. Randall's book showed him nothing of a lich, nor did Randall and Quinn's exploration of Dre Moria find anything. Since the group has also lost the Marut's trail, this looks to be a dead end.
Vampires in the area. The only information the Children have on vampires is from the visit Quinn had to the Temple of Gargul in Plateau City and what the slightly undead-obsessing cleric has told the group. As a thought in the back of some minds, several of the group HAS met Quinn's vampire-cleric father, Quentin DeMarco, and know that he is an implacable foe...
Training the Scouts. Only three (Durgan, Jurgen, and Peerimus) have any interest in helping train the scouts, and since that isn't a majority, it looks pretty much a non-starter too. When Captain Gheralh is informed, he gives a 'thems-the-breaks' shrug and turns to his own concerns. The mercenary company spends two more days on the fields south of Heranmar, training and demonstrating thier skills to the people of the area. There is no more mention of the scouts and they seem to be absent from the mercenary camp.
On the third day, the Thunderstorm Wolves break camp and march to the south. Surprisingly enough, during that time there are three youngsters who join up and march off with them. "If you ever need some common muscle," Captain Gheralh tells the town, "we're only several thousand gold pieces away!"
Kazak Thursday January 17th, 2008 11:29:06 PM
Sipping his hot tea the dwarven warrior lsitens thoughtfully to the veiws of the others about their next move.
"Well Peerimus ... you set the direction we're headed ... and i'll walk that path with ya "
"Should be intresting to see whats in this area and it's flavor and culture .... not to mention what we can do to help this quaint town"
"Also what do you know about the troubles between the elves and dwarves ... since me and me brother Durgan are new to this area ... i would like to help alleviate it if we could "
ooc: Quinns gift - 2nd level spell -resist energy (fire) 1st level spells - Hide from undead,Cure light wounds(all at 13th level)(will add to character sheet)
thanks Quinn !! ;-)
Durgan Thursday January 17th, 2008 11:53:56 PM
Durgan sips another ale. "So were to tour the area? Do you think we'll need any supplies Peerimus?"
Savin d20+6=17 Friday January 18th, 2008 11:24:17 AM
Savin watches the soldiers train during those days, seeing the teaching techniques and wondering if he should emulate them for his school. He doubts that he wants to emulate the level of discipline that the mercanaries use. Still he understands that he is training a single warrior who will be acting on his own or in a small group while the mercanaries are training large formation fighting.
Savin keeps settling into his routine, teaching the students in the morning and puttering around his house during the afternoons as his old teacher takes over the classes. He will invite his neigher the taylor and his cobbler wife over for some dinner which he will prepare himself (Rolled a 17 but think it is higher, don't have my character on this laptop at work)
Savin enjoys the conversation and tries to get a better feel for how the town feels about the Children setting up shop here.
Jurgen and Shay Friday January 18th, 2008 6:05:55 PM
Jurgen plans on spending a few hours with the mercenary scouts. The Children may not have had an interest in training them, but that didn't mean he couldn't give a few words of wisdom. Hearing that the scouts are missing, Jurgen spends the next two days exploring Heranmar (looking for a direction the Children could be sent in, among just learning the city) and apart from the rest of the group. Absent could mean ran away, but Jurgen couldn't help but think that the Captain had really gone and executed them.
It isn't until the mercenaries have gone on that Jurgen finally rears in his temper. After all, if something had happened to the scouts it was Gheralh's fault. He asks Holly about where he'd go to make preparations for their walk-about. When the Children meet up, Jurgen really only has one question: "When do we leave?"
(OOC: No more lich? I don't even get to share my lich joke anymore. :D So this evil, undead, blood-sucking lich walks into a bar... ;))
Durgan Friday January 18th, 2008 7:07:12 PM
Durgan makes a quick trip to the Catacombs to prepare for the journey.
Kazak Friday January 18th, 2008 11:27:11 PM
The dwarven warrior continues to explore business ventures around town .... gathering more info ... seeking who owns the stone quarry and other associated business's of stone.
Spending some time at the Inn Kazak also ponders how this new busniess can help the town grow both in economic and defensive purposes.
Noting the three youngsters who joined up with the Thunderstorm Wolves the dwarf smiles " hmm off to see the wold .... gonna be tougher then they think " muses Kazak
Firn'gaer Monday January 21st, 2008 9:43:12 AM
"Perhaps, we should make inquiries into the other towns in the area to see if they have heard or seen anything regarding vampire sightings. For that matter, we should ask about anything that might be cause for concern to the area. There are a few settlements to the south and Fort Wayfarer to the east. We should make sure to ask any villages we come on along the way."

Savin Monday January 21st, 2008 10:29:09 PM
Savin keeps to his routine, wondering if he should have taken on those mercananry recruits. "OH well, water under the bridge."
George Monday January 21st, 2008 10:30:00 PM
Anybody know where Steve is? Should we activate the ADM?
Durgan Monday January 21st, 2008 11:30:53 PM
OOC- I haven't heard from him either. I will give him one more day. In the meantime feel free to continue planning a tour of the region since that seemed to be the most agreed upon plan.
Durgan returns from the Catacombs and mumbles about the bitter water that passes for ale in that place.
Kazak Monday January 21st, 2008 11:31:34 PM
The dwarf continues his networking in the small towns business district ;-) being friendly and hoping to break that dour dwarven stereotype ;-)
Kazak ponders what he needs " hmm this place can really really be nice ... a little upgrading and hard work and this place can thrive "
" lets see what i need .... if i can git that stone quarry up and running .... maybe make it into some type of co-operative between me and da town .... this way the town can help support itself better and improve its infrastructure "
" And i can devlop a business and really do some good here ... even build me a house " smiles Kazak to himself as his mind wanders to the Inn and Brina
that oughta be good for trade .... we're on a good trade route and wit da good harbor ... hmmm ... who knows .... this place could be paradise " nods Kazak to himself
As the dwarven warrior wanders about town .... " Home !! ... dat has a nice ring to it "
Peerimus Tuesday January 22nd, 2008 10:36:14 AM
sorry...will catch up later today. Monday was holiday for me at least, possibly Steve as well.
SteveK Tuesday January 22nd, 2008 12:17:44 PM
no, I'm here. I took Monday off, will post soon.
Directions [DM SteveK] Tuesday January 22nd, 2008 12:44:15 PM
The mercenaries move off, taking the south road and on thier long, long march towards Hook City. Jurgen's worry about the mercenary scouts makes him investigate a little more. Turns out, each of the nine scouts got 50 lashes and then sent out on the same scouting mission that they failed last time. Jurgen is able to hear campfire information that the mission is to check out the woods to the south-west and find a migrating tribe of orcs who have come down from the northern wastes. "And this time, they better come back with hard info, or don't come back at all."
Kazak is ready to check out the local area with Peerimus, and is also interested in learning any more about a strained relationship between the elves and dwarves. When the good dwarf mentions it, it occurs to the others that the few elves and dwarves haven't been seen together or talking in the town. Even the long-time pair, Holly and Donk, haven't been seen together since the Children have been back from the Nightshade Crypt. In looking around town, Kazak learns that nobody owns the old quarry; that it was sortof a communal thing. If Kazak wants, there should be little problem buying or staking the land around the quarry. A quick investigation of the place discovers that there is still some good granite to be had, though the area is flooded from the rains.
Durgan also is ready to tour the area and starts making plans for supplies that will be needed.
Savin has watched the mercenaries and finds a couple of useful drills to integrate into his school. The old woman monk nods sagely at these actions. "It is good to gather ideas from many fields", she says. The tailor and cobbler family are pleased with the invitation and satisfied with both Savin's hospitality and cooking. They are happy as well that the building is not empty, and that the children's education is not just fighting and doesn't include any nonsense about Northern Gods. "Have to tell you, Mr. Savin", says the tailor, "you Chilren are allright, but I'm glad that Quinn fella didn't decide to stay in the area. Not a comfortable fella if you ask me." All in all, however, it looks like a good start to closer ties with the community.
Jurgen sits down with Holly over tea and they talk of the local areas (all in Duncan's Travel Agency) in preparation for the group's walkabout. Sense Motive DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { Holly seems especially sad lately, and will mention that Donk has moved up north to avoid getting Holly in trouble. Elves don't like elves who talk to dwarves, the elf merchants would stop buying from her if she were seen even selling something to a dwarf, let alone being good friends!}
Firn'gaer suggests that during thier travel around that they should make especial queries about vampires or other causes of concern in the area. "There are a few settlements to the south and Fort Wayfarer to the east. We should make sure to ask any villages we come on along the way."
Jurgen and Shay d20+7=23 d20+7=20 d20+7=23 d20+7=15 Tuesday January 22nd, 2008 3:07:39 PM
There is a sense of thankfulness in Jurgen after hearing of the scouts. When finding about their mission, he'll call upon Shay and ask whether the hawk is willing to keep an eye on them. Just to make sure they're okay. Maybe point them in the right direction, if possible. He doesn't want Shay to be gone for too long, but he does feel a ridiculous need to keep an eye on the scouts.
During Jurgen's chat with Holly, when she mentions Donk (Sense Motive Check - Success with 23), he does his best to lift her mood. Knowing that there's not a lot he can do at the moment, he makes a note to keep her updated on what the Children are doing. It'll give her someone to talk to, anyway.
While checking out town for a good horse for the walk-about, Jurgen takes some time to see if he can get anything concrete about the dwarf and elf situation. (Gather Information Checks - 20, 23 and 15 - Figured I'd roll a few.) If he gains any substantial information, he'll pass it on to the group. Knowing Peerimus' and Kazak's interest in the elves and dwarves, Jurgen relates to the group Holly's unhappiness. "I don't know how useful it is. But it seems that Holly and Donk can't be seen together without experiencing some stigma. This conflict seem to be growing more and more serious. It may warrant our attention, if not now, than soon."
Peerimus Tuesday January 22nd, 2008 3:09:09 PM
"Settled then and yes. This is an information first hand gathering type of trip." He smiles with a small chuckle and adds, "You might Durgan, you might at that. I have no problem in hunting for us in the evening for the following days, but I would bring some hard reserve if I were you."
"We set out tomorrow morning. Let's meet here for a sturdy meal and then we'll be off."
The foloowing morning Peerimus will cast Commune with Nature for the presence of woodland creatures, presence of powerful unnatural creatures and general animal population.
Peerimus 2nd post Tuesday January 22nd, 2008 3:36:03 PM
Peerimus eyes cloud over a bit and a small scowl crosses his face. "Unfortunately Kazak I don't know. It is like a dream partially remembered. It happened during the summoning of the Chaos avatar. I was projected forward in time, to here in Heranmar. There had been a great war between the elves and dwarves and the Star Mage Guild had nearly destroyed itself somehow. But the particulars of any of it? I can not say."
Savin Tuesday January 22nd, 2008 8:12:51 PM
Savin will scurry up to Peerimus when he sees him casting his spells, "Whatchya doing boss? Going somewhere? Can I come? I think we should check out that mercanary patrol. I would like to know if we have orcs nearby. They could be a menance to the town and I don't want my new house menaced. Can we go? Do you want me to go alone?"
Savin has the look of an eager puppy. You would never guess he is an experienced adventurer sometimes.
Durgan Tuesday January 22nd, 2008 8:13:59 PM
"Jurgen, that would explain a bit about why Holly wouldn't talk to me or me brudder. Since we could maybe use some extra food, would you pick some up at Holly's store? I don't think I'd be welcome. I'll carry supplies fer everyone in my bag. Pick up whatever we need, I'll take care of it."
"And don't ferget a small keg of ale."
Firn'gaer Tuesday January 22nd, 2008 9:25:02 PM
"Which way are you heading? I need to finish some wizardly tasks and then I will catch up. I should need no more than two days. If you are leaving right away, I will catch up; otherwise, what should I plan for?"
[I assume this all happened as I was getting back from the Catacombs, and I haven't had the time to scribe the scrolls or make the spell permanent yet.]
Kazak Tuesday January 22nd, 2008 11:59:27 PM
Nodding at Peerimus's answer about his question ' ok very well then ... at least it will give us something to think about "
"Is everyone going on this patrol ? ... i'll be ready in the moring .... be gone a few days i guess ... well will be good to strech the legs abit as we learn more of the area "
Peerimus Wednesday January 23rd, 2008 9:47:47 AM
To Firngaer, "If you could use an extra few days, I do not see why we can not simply wait a few extra days. Call it a practice of Patience."
To Kazak, "I certainly assumed we would all be going and it will be a good deal longer than a few days. I was thinking more near a few months at least to make the circuit."
Ted Wednesday January 23rd, 2008 1:51:27 PM

Trace [sub-SteveK] Wednesday January 23rd, 2008 2:02:16 PM
Getting supplies for an extended stay in the wilderness is no problem for the elvish ranger, and he and his bow are ready to move out. "I like the idea of Firn'gear staying back for a few days," the suspicious ranger adds, "just in case those mercenaries were trying to lure us out of the way."
