As you say. (DM Jim) Tuesday February 12th, 2008 11:18:05 PM
Elithiarian nods his head as he listens to the group. "My Rangers and I will do our best to hold whatever the aboleth is doing at bay till your return." As you make comment about something that will allow you to breathe underwater he nods his head. "When you come to the preserve my agents will meet you with a number of items that will allow you to do this." With a last nod he starts to turn to head for the door, he has to see the council at least. "May you have luck on your journey." He will leave along with Rabbitsfoot, who turns and nods to the group.
He holds back for a few seconds to speak to you. "I will make sure that things are taken care of in the city and it is safe for your return." He offers his hand to each of you before he leaves to accompany his friend to the council.
Outside the group makes short work of getting ready to move out for the first spot that was marked on the map. From earlier you have gauged the distance to be at least seven days ride to get there, maybe a little more. The traveling should be easy as they weather looks to be fair this day and you should be able to get a few hours travel in at least.
Julian Tuesday February 12th, 2008 11:34:59 PM
Having clambered up onto the carriage (with difficulty in armour) Julian calls, "Yeeeeha! Let's go. Who's in with me? and more importantly Who can drive these things?" He chuckles deeply at his own joke. "Who's leading this caravan? Don't make me do a three-point turn..."
Podo Wednesday February 13th, 2008 12:03:20 AM
Podo waves good'ay to the guests and turn to ready himself for the journey.
When asked, Podo will join/ride with Julian.
Kadaz d20+11=13 Wednesday February 13th, 2008 6:21:24 AM
Kadaz goes to his room and makes sure he hasn't forgotten anything. He then returns to the mule and cart, climbs up, and picks up the reins. "Come on Birdie, up here." The dog jumps up onto the seat beside Kadaz and sits there, ready to start a journey.
"Anyone else need a ride?" Kadaz asks. He is driving a cart that seems to be about 1/2 full of miscellaneous gear. Just behind him a long bow sticks up, with several quivers of arrows at hand. Next to him is a heavy cross bow, also with arrows close by. And of course his axe is at his feet.
"Come on mule" he says, and with a flick of the reins the mule starts walking. (handle animal 13)
Shadow Wednesday February 13th, 2008 7:35:24 AM
Shadow watches the elf and the halfling leave and then grabs his stuff. He will help load the cart with the groups stuff, and then look for a spot to ride. He will join Kadaz on the cart thinking, 'I will take a turn on the cart and then maybe in the carridge later'.
He is ready to get underway.
Thar ail Baerer d20+13=18 Wednesday February 13th, 2008 9:58:33 AM
Thar will take one of the point positions, as he relishes the chance to use some of his ranger skills. He has focused so much on his clerical abilities that he fears his other skills have become rusty.
Once they head out, his tracking and scouting knowledge comes back quickly.
He'll watch for the usual unfriendies on the way (ambushes, recent tracks, etc.)
Spot = 18
Arm d20+6=15 Wednesday February 13th, 2008 10:32:11 AM
After making sure their apartment door is securely locked, Arm mounts his horse and heads out with the rest. While he rides, his thoughts fade back to when the last time they left like this, and inevitably to Mira. Shaking his head irritably, he forces himself to think about his OWN future, "Wonder if I should bother to sell my lute, as I never get the chance to use it anymore?" he thinks.
After a bit, he spurs his horse forward to catch up with Thar and nods as he comes abreast of him, "Good day for a ride.." he says. He then scans the area as well (spot=15).
Edmund d20+2=4 Wednesday February 13th, 2008 4:21:03 PM
After all his boasting, Edmund is happy to ride horseback, and seizes upon the opportunity to do so. Of course, it becomes clear rather quickly that Edmund's experiences with horses in the Navy were rather few and far between. It takes him some time to get in the saddle.
After a great deal of turning around in circles, Edmund finally manages to mount his horse. Then, he tries to get it to trot, and finds himself off-put by the lack of sails. With a great deal of frustraton, he does manage to get it moving.
"Finally," he sighs to himself, as his horse plods along at a safe, respectable, speed. A good thing too, because Edmund looks none-too-steady in the saddle.
"Been a while," he says if anyone glances over at him. "Gotta get the hang of it again, that's all."
(Ride=4)
Kirsten Wednesday February 13th, 2008 4:24:07 PM
Once her horse is summoned, Kirsten will swing herself into the saddle and start off with the others. She seems glad to be with her trusty friend after so long of being in the city.
She sticks somewhat close to the carriage as they travel, hoping that they won't run into much trouble.
Jolly day for a ride. (DM Jim) Wednesday February 13th, 2008 10:29:28 PM
It is a fair start, though it might have been a little later than some would have liked. Midday is fast approaching when the group does finally get to moving.
The carriage and cart make a steady pace, but one that the horses could outdistance if they so desired. Still the riding is a pure joy really, well except for poor Edmund who seems to have gotten a horse with few manners. The dang beast on several occassions tries to the bite the poor man as he is riding.
Still the group makes it to a decent area to camp for the first night. It is a sheltered area with a small amount of bushes that surrounds a nice little rise. This is further shielded by a number of large boulders that will help in sheltering you.
Though you might have pressed on for another hour, maybe an hour and a half...the stop is more than afforded. You know that you will reach the first of the lifts to the lower plateau in sometime tomorrow...before midday. There might be a wait or the darn thing might be broken down again as it is sometimes want to be.
Arm Thursday February 14th, 2008 5:55:50 AM
Arm sniggers to himself at Ed's misfortune, but then realizes that perhaps he should start taking it easy on the mage, as they need to rely on him more than ever now. He then involuntarily shudders at that thought and turns his attention to the road ahead.
Once at the campsite, he sets up his bedroll against the boulders and calls out, "Well, who's for first watch? I'll take the middle one.".
Kadaz Thursday February 14th, 2008 7:04:32 AM
"Birdie and I will take 1st watch." Kadaz offers, as he unpacks a tent from the cart and sets it up. He also feeds and tends to the mule, making sure it will be ready to go in the morning.
Over supper Kadaz has a suggestion. "I think that we should practice working together. I'm not really sure what Podo and Julian can do, and they are certainly unaware of our abilities. We'll be more effective as a group if we know what each other can do."
"I'll start, because I'm straightforward. I'll try to be in the front of any battle. To help me, I have this magic axe, it will cut through most materials, and also has the ability to deliver an electric shock in battle. I have a ring of feather falling, and this necklace that allows me to breath underwater. I also have tattoos that allow me to increase my strength several times a day and protect me from evil. My armor and shield are both enchanted." He pauses to mentally go over what he has. "And here, in this side pouch of my sack, are several healing potions, an enlarge potion, a potion of bear's endurance, and 2 potions of bless weapon. If you need any of these in battle, just take them."
"And of course, Birdie here has this special magical collar which gives him fresh breath, all of the time." Kadaz picks up Birdie, and offers to let anyone who wants smell his breath.
Thar ail Baerer Thursday February 14th, 2008 2:07:45 PM
Thar has a friendly laugh at Ed's experiences with his mount and enjoys the spectacle. Once they arrive safely at their campsite, he says a quick prayer of thanks for the uneventful journey.
Once they begin cooking their meal, Thar follows Kadaz's excellent suggestion and says "Well, I'm not as straightforward in my role for the party. I'm the backup scout behind Shadow, and tend to take the rear in urban areas, in order to watch our backs. In nature, I'm more in my element and tend to use my tracking and ranger skills to that advantage."
"In combat, I'll usually take on one of the lesser powerful enemies, since the fighter types like Kadaz are better at combat then I am. I have 2 twin short swords, one that sheathes itself in fire during combat, and am quite skilled with both of them."
"Usually in the middle stages of the battle, I'll step away from direct combat and focus on the clerical side of my persona. I tend to use most of my spells in healing those in combat and restoring whatever damage or ability loss is needed. I also carry a wand of cure med. wounds that we bought with party funds and I use that whenever needed."
Lastly, he says "I'll take the late watch, as I like to see the morning sun rise."
Shadow Thursday February 14th, 2008 2:15:02 PM
Shadow is grateful for the early stop. He realizes that next time he might be better off on a horse as he rubs his backside. It is sore from the bouncing along the way on the cart seat.
When Kadaz talks about his fighting strategies, Shadow listens and then says, "Well, I for one am more for coming from behind and from the shadows, but if I have to fight from the front then I trust my bow over here more than my rapier." He indicates his various weapons. He will listen to the others and then help setup the camp by getting some firewood, and preparing a fire pit if no one has done that yet. (He will make sure the fire pit is about a hands depth with the shovel and then line the pit with stones.)
"I can also take 1st watch."
Edmund Thursday February 14th, 2008 2:48:28 PM
Edmund dismounts with significantly greater ease than mounting. In fact, he nearly falls off, and looks glad to be on his own two feet again.
"I... say..." he mutters to himself.
After a deal of unpacking--for Edmund has clearly brought along a number of things he didn't need--he manages to get himself set up to get some sleep.
"Last watch, I suppose," he says, and the exhaustion is apparent. "If you need me. Otherwise... sleep... would be..."
And with that, he is already asleep.
Kirsten Thursday February 14th, 2008 5:31:12 PM
Kirsten watches as Edmund so abruptly falls asleep and then shakes her head.
The paladin makes herself busy offering to help prepare a small meal and offering to fill in as watch at any time.
Julian Thursday February 14th, 2008 6:19:42 PM
Julian also talks about his fighting tactics, "I am a Barbarian at heart, though I've taken some formal training in fighting as well. But I have the ability to change myself to better suit he combat. "I can grow to twice my size, and so can my badger Shark, here. Or with my wand we can shrink a lot to take a different approach. I like to get right into the thick of things with my Falchion, charge in and knock one down with a well placed shoulder and whack it as it tries to get up as I fight off another from the other side of the enemy. Provided I don't get Entangled... "I am slowly learning the benefits of holding off to let the talkers talk, and the casters cast. "Whilst I can cut many foes in two in a single blow, my Falchion has been crafted to deal soft damage, so that we can learn from the enemy and hopefully work back up to take on a greater evil. "Some would say I am not subtle when it comes to fighting. But as Protector of Domi I've learned to protect my friends by knocking down opponents blows with my own sword. "I can read scrolls for myself, but I can't cast magic on others the way Kendry or Podo can. Though I can use a wand. I've learned to repell the undead, too, though I've never tried it."
"I'd also like to take first watch, if you don't mind, Shadow. Can I help with dinner at all? and shall we do supper as well?"
Julian finds a grassy area to tie the horses up for the night and sets up a tent for himself and his badgers and his dog.
Julian Thursday February 14th, 2008 6:21:30 PM
OOC: that should read:
"I'd also like to take first watch with you, if you don't mind, Shadow.
Arm Friday February 15th, 2008 6:10:17 AM
Arm speaks up, "I have a silver longsword as well as a rod of wonder, which is by nature, unpredictable. The rest of my items are mostly defensive in nature.". He then eats sparsely then curls up in his bedroll to sleep, still missing Mira by his side as he does so.
Podo Friday February 15th, 2008 10:56:30 AM
"I personally don't have much in the way of offensive weapons, aside from a spiked chain, blunted of course!" explains Podo to the group during the conversation.
"I'm a healer by nature..." continues Podo.
"So, who's going to take watches?" asks Podo to the group.
Kadaz Friday February 15th, 2008 9:31:58 PM
"Podo, we need someone on 3rd watch with Thar. And if Julian and Shadow take 1st watch, I'll switch to 2nd with Arm."
Kadaz slowly takes off his full plate and puts on his chain. Then he settles in for supper, plays a bit with Birdie, then goes to sleep for a while. When it's time for his watch he wakes, takes off his chain, puts on plate again, and stands guard.
Kirsten Sunday February 17th, 2008 1:47:34 PM
She listens to the others speak and then agrees to take whatever watch is left.
Before getting some sleep, the paladin will take a moment to pray.
Podo Sunday February 17th, 2008 5:19:36 PM
Podo agrees with Kadaz to take the offered watch. "Ok, sure, I'll do that Kadaz."
Prior to the watch, Podo will pray to Alemi & Domi.
JimW Sunday February 17th, 2008 8:03:27 PM
Scott, tried to send you a part of the module but the email address did not work. Really needed you to take over for me next week.
I seem to remember you having a new email, but cannot find it in my stuff. Let me know and I can send you the part of the module.
By the way, thanks for the assist.
Edmund Sunday February 17th, 2008 11:07:35 PM
Edmund dozes fitfully, and is significantly quieter when asleep than when awake. He doesn't even snore! He does occasionally mumble, though, which begs the question: does he ever actually stop talking?
"Nnn... 'an some more pie..."
Arm Monday February 18th, 2008 7:53:23 AM
Arm awakes when it is time for his watch, and moves over to stand by Kadaz. Laying a hand on his shoulder he quietly says, "So, what do you think the future has in store for us? Whatever it is, I'm grateful that you're here with us to face it.".
Kadaz Monday February 18th, 2008 1:47:06 PM
Kadaz looks at Arm and carefully considers his words. "And I'm glad you'll be at my side, whatever comes. Together we can face anything. And as for the future, only the Gods know what is our fate. I'm content doing my best to protect Plateau City."
He looks out into the darkness for a while. "I think we should name our new home. And let's come up with something before Edmund suggests 'Ed's Place' or 'The Royal Naval Hostel' or some such absurd thing. Maybe something with Mithril in the name? Mithril Hall? No, I think that's taken. The Mithril Guard House? How about just Mithril House? That's short, and it's clearly associated with us."
Podo Monday February 18th, 2008 4:03:28 PM
"How about Mithril Manor? Or how about chateau Mithril or maybe even Mithril Mansion?" wonders Podo obviously excited at the chance to name his dwelling.
"Perhaps, Villa Mithril or some combination thereof / aforementioned ?" continues Podo to the group.
Good Nights. (DM JimW) Monday February 18th, 2008 10:37:01 PM
The night is uneventful and the group finds that they get a good nights sleep after all. The watches see nothing that would lead them to worry and need to wake the others.
The morning finally comes and you each awake to find yourselves feeling refreshed from the hard ride...maybe a little stiff, but still good. It appears that you have awaken early enough that you could take the time to fix a little breakfast.
With the morning things taken care of, you all prepare to leave. You continue the journey and finally reach the first lift that leads down to one of the lower plateaus. There are a dozen people already waiting as the lift is being raised. It is a mystifying sight to look out over the plateaus with the sun drawing the colors of nature into their full glory.
A little inquiry, tells you that there will be about an two hour wait as their are several passengers at the base as well. Seems they have priority over you as well. The lift master does let you know that you could go the long way around and use the trail to get to the next plateau...it will just add a day to your travel.
[Went ahead and posted as I am not sure if our Scott is the same one that has a sick father...I think it was.]
Arm Tuesday February 19th, 2008 5:59:22 AM
With a stare into the distance that could reach a thousand miles, Arm replies to his friend, "Yes, but are we prepared to protect Plateau City from itself?". With the recent talk about the town council problems, he is confident that his meaning is clear.
At Podo's remark, he continues, "I don't know about Mithril Mansion..it sounds a bit pretentious, though Mithril Manor has a good ring to it.". Glancing at Kadaz, he continues, "As does Mithril House, and I agree..Ed needs to be kept out of the naming process.".
Shadow Tuesday February 19th, 2008 7:11:46 AM
Shadow is anxious to get started again in the morning, and is a little frustrated while they have to wait at the lift. As far as the naming of the new house, Shadow does not really feel the need to add to the discussion as he thinks, 'why do we need to name a house?' He will try to hide his frustration at the waiting.
OOC: Sorry Jim, but I was just not able to get on until today (it is not me with the sick father). My email addresses are scott.apodaca@asd20.org and sapodac@comcast.net (probably bounced with this old address sapodac@adelphia.net).
Kadaz Tuesday February 19th, 2008 7:42:20 AM
In the morning Kadaz packs up the tent and equipment, puts on his plate, and climbs back on the cart. At the lift he thinks that a 2-hour wait isn't so bad; they have a great view to pass the time.
Thar ail Baerer d20+9=15 Tuesday February 19th, 2008 9:16:53 AM
After a good night's sleep, Thar rises and says a quick prayer of thanks for their safety.
Gathering his equipment, he prepares for the day's journey and eats a simple breakfast.
When he hears the conversation about the house, he smiles and says (while laughing) "Well, I'm not real creative, but I mostly agree with Arm about whom should be included and excluded from the naming process. Mithril Manor and Mithril House are both fine by me."
"While we wait for a few hours, I'll go see if I can catch some small game or something more interesting to eat, since our trail rations can get old after a while."
Track? (to find small game or something to eat for the group) = 15
Kirsten Tuesday February 19th, 2008 11:37:36 AM
She will rise in the morning with the others and gather her belongings as they prepare to leave for the day. Kirsten stays out of the house naming ritual, as she doesn't really see much use in having a name for both their "order" and the house that they just so happen to be staying in.
Once at the lift, she will quietly take in the sights.
Julian Tuesday February 19th, 2008 4:34:21 PM
Julian quickly packs up his tent, grooms and feeds his animals, "Can someone help with the horses, I can't reach..." He helps with breakfast, and gets the carriage ready. At the lift, with a long wait in store, "Is anyone else hungry? Shall we prepare a meal?"
Podo Tuesday February 19th, 2008 7:21:40 PM
Podo tries to take in the scenery as beautiful as it is.
Podo tries to lend a hand to Julian with the horses and then lends a hand with 2nd breakfast!
Edmund Tuesday February 19th, 2008 9:22:30 PM
Edmund has no time for scenery and spends most of the morning eating breakfast. Luckily, he has but little to pack.
"Time to go already?" he says plaintively as everyone gets ready to go.
When he hears Julian and Podo speaking, Edmund's normally dim view of the short people momentarily passes and he glances up, eyes wide.
"Second breakfast?" he says with surprise. "Where?"
Request. Wednesday February 20th, 2008 1:36:24 AM
I have a request for each of you. It has been brought to my attention that there might be a large difference with the Wealth between each of your characters. I wanted to have each of you figure out on average how much gold that each of you has.
To this end, I have done a little work myself and come up with the following for some of you. The following does not include the following items....WLA dues, Star Mage dues, mundane items or specialty items that should not be figured. Please figure in the cost of any dues that you have paid out to the WLA or SMG in your Wealth please.
I am figureing that Julian has about the same Wealth as Podo, but might be mistaken. You do not need to figure in all the mundane items that you bought unless they are of masterwork quality.
Julian Wednesday February 20th, 2008 4:38:38 AM
OOC Double that and and 1 = 19,000gp value
Julian Wednesday February 20th, 2008 4:48:17 AM
OOC that is everything, btw. I just read the last line of the Request post. The mundane stuff doesn't add to that much.
Arm Wednesday February 20th, 2008 6:04:16 AM
Arm eats a light breakfast with the group as he enjoys the scenery and ponders the task ahead of them.
OOC: My amount seems about right..I've been hoarding, I suppose..that and the "gift" from Mira has made me quite wealthy aparently. ;)
The 1st lift (ADM Scott) Wednesday February 20th, 2008 7:21:44 AM
The group decides to wait for the lift and do various things while waiting. Some prepare another breakfast and others just sit and look at the gorgeous scenery. Thar finds a few tracks of some very small rabbits but is unable to catch any before it is time to get on the lift.
The party is finally in line to board the lift and they get to enjoy an even better view as they head down to the next plateau. Once they have off loaded everything from the lift they head towards the next lift which they should reach before evening if they push themselves.
Let me know if you plan to push for the next lift or stop for the night before it.
Shadow Wednesday February 20th, 2008 7:24:09 AM
Shadow enjoys the view both before and during the ride down. He almst forgets that they are on a dire mission as he sees the beauty around him. Once down he helps to unload everything and then gets back on the cart to start up again. "I for one would love to get to the next lift before we stop for the night." Shadow puts in his vote.
OOC: I did a rough estimate and that total seems right.
Kadaz Wednesday February 20th, 2008 7:50:35 AM
"Off we go, can't waste time admiring the scenery when there are wandering monsters to catch!" he says, admonishing those looking at the scenery. "Who knows what harm the escaped monsters may get cause."
(my total comes to 56,000 gp of items)
Julian Wednesday February 20th, 2008 8:31:31 AM
"Yeah, let's push onwards. I can eat as we roll, and snooze too, if Podo will drive. Or he can sleep. I think I love this carriage. I might convert half of the insides into a galley."
Edmund Wednesday February 20th, 2008 12:51:32 PM
Edmund is ready to depart, though not too keen on having to ride the horse again. Once he mounts it (this takes some time), he is in better spirits.
"Not much farther now, what?" he says hopefully.
(Edmund's magical items and gold total 46,754g)
Thar Wednesday February 20th, 2008 3:54:32 PM
Thar returns to the group, and is a little frustrated at his lack of success in trapping any small animals. On the other hand, it is hard to be too upset, especially because of the beautiful scenery.
When they depart, he takes his usual lead position on his horse. Considering the options about what to do for the rest of the day, he says "I'd say we should head toward the lift and try to make it. It will be a much safer area, at least because there will be other people around. Otherwise, we're on our own if we stop before the lift."
(OOC = Yes, 50K is about right.)
Podo Wednesday February 20th, 2008 10:48:33 PM
Podo helps out where he can, including driving the horses on the carriage.
Podo says to those that can hear him, "I'd rather drive to the next lift before we start. Not knowing exactly how many lifts we need to take before we arrive to our final destination."
[OOC: thats about right, although with my recent transaction #870, its closer to 9400gp]
Arm Thursday February 21st, 2008 6:01:18 AM
"I concur. We should head to the next lift immediately, as we have spent enough time waiting for this one. Any further delay will only make our journey longer.". He then mounts his horse and prepares to head out with the group.
Lift #2 (ADM Scott) Thursday February 21st, 2008 7:13:39 AM
The group decides to push to the second lift, and get underway fairly quickly, even though it takes a little time for Edmund to climb back up into the saddle. The road is pretty clear of traffic, so you make fairly good time to the second lift. Arriving at the lift in the late afternoon, and you find this lift does not have the lines like the first lift. The group actually catches the lift at the top and loads up and is at the bottom of the lift in no time compared with the other lift. As the group moves away from the lift they realize it is starting to get a little late in the day, and from the looks of the map it is almost a full day to the final lift that they must take as they head to the mysterious X on the map.
Shadow Thursday February 21st, 2008 7:15:57 AM
Shadow is grateful that they do not have to waste time waiting for this lift, and that they are at the bottom in no time compared with the first lift. Once the grroup moves away from the lift, "Well that looks like a promising camp sight over there." He indicates what looks like an almost permanent camping area with a firepit and flat area for tents and stuff. "Same watch rotation?"
Thar ail Baerer Thursday February 21st, 2008 1:22:20 PM
"Sounds good to me," agrees Thar to Shadow's question. "I'll take the same watch as usual (last) and I'm game for using that camp area you pointed out."
He'll lead his pony to the sight and after making a quick check of the area to ensure it is truly safe, he'll make camp.
Kadaz Thursday February 21st, 2008 4:58:39 PM
"Sounds good to me." He spends the early evening checking his cart and mule and equipment. Then sharpening all of his weapons and checking his armor. Sometimes he sorta envies those who don't wear armor or carry weapons. That must be a big time saver.
Podo Friday February 22nd, 2008 1:14:12 AM
"Same watch rotation works for me, Brothers." says Podo to the other 3 men.
"Does anyone know how many lifts there are in total? Are there any lifts aside from these that we are taking?" ask Podo.
Arm Friday February 22nd, 2008 5:59:53 AM
Arm replies, "Yes, we should rest. Also, we should stop again a short distance from our destination to rest as well, as we may need it. I will take 2nd watch again.".
When his watch comes, he begins to marvel at the intricate nature of the City, and wonders how long before it is rotted from the inside out.
3rd and final lift Friday February 22nd, 2008 7:26:47 AM
The group takes the opportunity to setup camp at a fairly well used campsite. The night goes by with no interuptions and the group heads out early. This plateau starts to look more 'wild' then the previous plateau as they move farther away from the city. By mid afternoon they reach the last lift that they will need to take. It is just like the other two they have used, but there are a few more guards at this lift and there is no line so the group is immediately let on the lift and the trip down is started quickly. Once at the bottom the group realizes they are really out of the civilized areas as teh only trace of any civilization is the road leading away fromt eh lift. Looking at the map the group sees that they will have to leave the road either tomorrow (to take the shortest route to the X) or stay on the road one more day to make better time because of the terrain. The cart and the carriage will not make as good time over the rougher terrain.
Thar ail Baerer Friday February 22nd, 2008 9:35:36 AM
As he wakes up, Thar gives thanks for a safe night's rest. He enjoys the third lift ride and is actually having a nice time out in nature, especially after all those weeks in the city.
When they have to decide whether to leave the road or stay on it one more day for better time, he says "Maybe we should stay on the road, since the cart/carriage won't be of much use if we leave the trail early."
Edmund Friday February 22nd, 2008 1:36:52 PM
Edmund, who is having the usual trouble with his horse, is well aware that leaving the road would only compound his problems.
"By all means, let's stay on the road," he declares emphatically, "It's safer, we'll make better time, and the carriage will get stuck if we leave it."
Kadaz Friday February 22nd, 2008 4:05:12 PM
Kadaz realizes he hadn't thought ahead enough. "If we have to leave the road I wonder how well my cart or Podo's carriage will do. Probably at some point we'll have to leave them behind. I can repack some of the supplies on my mule so that will help. Maybe I should have bought a saddle for the mule." He thinks back to previous hikes in the woods. Not something he's looking forward to having to do again.
Julian Friday February 22nd, 2008 4:51:06 PM
"Oh dear, leaving the carriage behind..." He cannot think of way to solve that dilema. Still, it has been nice to be so comfortable. He is more than happy to walk. But it is not fair on the horses to be left alone. "Perhaps we leave the carriage and tow the two horses along, maybe just take the cart - it would be easier to pull out of mud at least."
OOC sorry I missed a post, my school had its swimming carnival so I had no net access all day
Podo Saturday February 23rd, 2008 7:11:54 AM
"I don't wind walking from here, after all I am a member of the Walkers!" laughs Podo.
Kirsten Sunday February 24th, 2008 7:55:31 PM
Never having been one to worry about travelling, she is more inclined to let the others decide if they will leave the road or not. Kirsten is just happy to be spending some time with her warhorse and companion, Wolfgang.
Arm Monday February 25th, 2008 5:58:56 AM
Arm agrees with the rest, "Yes, let us keep to the road. As I said before, though, we should rest before reaching the spot on the map.".
Shadow Monday February 25th, 2008 12:05:43 PM
"Well we should have all gotten horses anyways, but who would have known." Shadow says as the group decides to continue on the road.
A country Inn (ADM Scott) Monday February 25th, 2008 12:11:31 PM
The Mithril Order continues down the road on their way to the mysterous X on the map. The road lets them make good time, and late in the afternoon they approach a lone 2-story building. From a distance they can see a sign out front (cannot make it out from here) and what looks like a gated stable area. As they get closers th esign shows a fairly poor representation of a lion with a mug and plate in front of it.
Thar ail Baerer Monday February 25th, 2008 2:06:40 PM
As they near the building, Thar says to Shadow "Feel like scouting it out? It looks like an inn, but before we go in, I'd like to see what the outside looks like. Also, we should find out where the possible exit points are, etc."
Kadaz Monday February 25th, 2008 3:13:10 PM
Kadaz looks at the building and says "The last outpost of civilization. Let's hope they don't water their beer too much." He will advance towards the gate, making lots of noise in order to provide a distraction for Shadow to check out the place.
Julian Monday February 25th, 2008 4:36:17 PM
"Can't we just... no, s'pose not. Scouting is a good idea too."
Kirsten Monday February 25th, 2008 6:45:14 PM
The paladin lingers a moment, and then moves to follow Kadaz as she was never much for scouting.
Podo d20+8=17 Monday February 25th, 2008 7:18:47 PM
"Well, Brothers and Sisters, I see that perhaps we should be apprised of all our surroundings as this Inn does appear to be on the lower Plateau, more wild then the rest have been." whispers Podo.
Looking closes as if to spot anything out of the ordinary (Spot DC=17), Podo does his bets to pick up the subtle details that might give more information as to what this place really is.
Edmund Monday February 25th, 2008 11:35:55 PM
Cheered considerably by the presence of the Inn, Edmund is keen to have a stop, something to eat, and a hot bath.
"I wonder if they have decent pies," Edmund says to no-one in particular. "I could do with a good pie. And some tea. I'd like some tea. And a pastry, too. Something sweet. Maybe a cobbler, too..."
Edmund prattles on as Kadaz makes noise with the gate, contributing in his own garrulous way to the distraction.
Arm d20+13=20 d20+7=14 Tuesday February 26th, 2008 6:01:23 AM
As they approach the 'pub', Arm looks about uneasily, checking out the paddock to see if there are any horses in it, and listens intently to see if he can pick up any sounds from inside (listen=20, spot=14).
Shadow d20+17=36 d20+9=14 Tuesday February 26th, 2008 7:06:52 AM
Shadow nods his head and jumps down off of the cart and will move ahead of the group. He will approach the inn cautiously and check it out. He will make a quick circuit around the inn trying to see if there is any signs of habitation.
Actions: Move Silently=36 Spot=14
The Inn (ADM Scott) Tuesday February 26th, 2008 7:12:05 AM
The group slows down and Shadow moves to check out the inn. As he makes the circuit around the inn he sees that there definitly is someone at the inn because he sees smoke coming from the main chimney. There seems to be some animals (not sure what type and how many) in the stable.
The group approaches as Shadow shows signs that it is okay to approach. When the group gets closer a young man exits the stables and says, "Is you al plan'n to stay for the night?" the young man asks. He looks to know how to handle animals as he takes the lead from the mule on the cart (or the horses from the carriage whichever is closest) and then pets the animals nose and makes some sounds that others have heard from animal handlers. He waits to see your answers.
Thar Tuesday February 26th, 2008 9:23:32 AM
Seeing that the night is approaching, Thar says to the boy (while looking at his friends for confirmation) "I suppose this place will work for the night. We'd like several rooms for the night, as well as barding for our animals. Also, we're hungry and some good homecooked food would work well."
Kadaz Tuesday February 26th, 2008 5:01:18 PM
Kadaz watches the stable hand escort his mule away. At least he seems to know what he's doing. This may be ok. He takes his pack (with his valuable items) off the cart and then asks "Where's a safe place I can put this cart overnight?"
Kirsten Tuesday February 26th, 2008 8:21:19 PM
The paladin reluctantly dismisses her own warhorse and gathers her items. She seems relieved to be able to sleep inside for a change, and welcomes the idea of some possibly tasty food.
Julian Tuesday February 26th, 2008 11:11:42 PM
Julian pipes up along with Kadaz, "and somewhere for the wagon too...?"
The tall halfling in shiny breastplate down from the carriage along with his animals, and allows the man to take care of the horses - he can reach them better. He takes his pack, and Sallies pack and follows the others inside.
Arm d20+7=25 Wednesday February 27th, 2008 5:59:19 AM
Arm lets the man take his horse as well, and as they head for the inn, he whispers a phrase he heard a long time ago to his friends, "Keep your friends close, and your sword closer.".
Once inside, he takes a cursory look around the place, looking for possible exits and/or ambush points (spot=25).
Podo Wednesday February 27th, 2008 7:00:28 AM
Podo, horseless, nodes towards the man as if to support what Arm said.
A Comfortable Main Room (ADM Scott) Wednesday February 27th, 2008 7:31:49 AM
The group gives directions and asks some questions of the stable boy, he responds, "I will cost 10 silver per horse, 5 silver per mule, that will cover the care I take for the animals. How about over on the side of the stable for the cart and the carriage?" He indicates the side of the stable closest to the main building. If the group gives their okay for the cost, the boy starts taking the animals inside the stable.
The group gets their stuff and they head into teh main room of the inn. The main room is fairly bright and very clean with about 8 tables for guests to sit and eat. There is what would normally called a bar (in a tavern), but here it looks more like a counter and there is a rather rotund man in a clean white apron behind it wiping glasses with a very white towel. There is no one else in the main room right now. "Welcome to the Lion's Rest Inn, and what can I do for you young folk?" the rotund man asks with a geniune smile on his face. "If you are looking for rooms we are empty right now so I can provide you with any number of rooms. Sorry but the price has risen lately because there is very little travel through here right now because there is something going on near here. Although, I assure you will be safe here. Rooms are 5 gold per room, but they will easily hold 2 people comfortably or 4 if you would really like to cram in. For dinner we have a lamb stew at 1g, beef pie at also 1g, and some pork chops at 1.5g each, all come with fresh bread and juice. Anything stronger will cost you more."
Thar ail Baerer Wednesday February 27th, 2008 11:12:43 AM
Walking to the bar, Thar listens to the man's prices and is initially surprised at the exhorbitant food costs. He tries to remain calm and says "I'll have the lamb please." He reaches into his pocket and pays the boy for his horse (10 sp)(from the stable) and the bartender a gp.
Once he orders, he says to the other males in the group "Well, do you guys want to share a room? If we can fit four in a room, that might help save some money. It also helps our security if we stick together."
Once finished, he goes over to a clean (hopefully) table, prays and then eats his meal.
Kadaz Wednesday February 27th, 2008 5:07:08 PM
Kadaz is very puzzled by the innkeeper's logic. The inn is empty so prices rise? This guy wouldn't last long in Plateau City. But this may be the last roof they sleep under for a while.
Kadaz starts mumbling under his breath, counting fingers. There are 8 of them, so if they get 3 rooms everyone should fit in. That's 15 gold. Assume 2 gp each for supper, that's 16 more. So that's 31 gold. Kadaz digs into his belt pouch.
"Thar keep your money. Everyone, I will treat for lodging and supper tonight. We'll stay here." Kadaz pulls out 35 gold and goes over to talk to the innkeeper. "Here's 35 gold, for 3 rooms and supper for 8. I expect you to treat us right. Understand?" he says in a friendly manner. "And if you have any fresh pie that guy over there," he points at Edmund, "would appreciate it."
"Also, you mentioned that something is going on near here. What is it? Anything interesting? And why do you think we would not be safe outside?" Kadaz is very interested in finding out what this guy knows about recent travelers and treats in the area.
Julian Wednesday February 27th, 2008 9:27:46 PM
Julian quietly adds his 2 gp for his horses.
He finds a room and frees himself of the breastplate armour. He also removes the barding from his pets, and gives them a good grooming. With a hearty meal and some ales Julian will be ready for bed.
Podo d20+10=18 d20+7=24 d20+8=13 Wednesday February 27th, 2008 10:05:19 PM Outside the Inn, near the stables
Podo, follows the others into the Inn as he doesn't have to concern himself with horses, tackle, or carriages. While walking to the Inn, Podo speaks a command word under his breath and the pants he wears changes to make the simple white robes of Alemi in both texture and color.
The Lions' Inn
Once in the Inn's main room, Podo finds it a bit odd that the place appears to be immaculate. It's bright, clean, and empty except for himself, his companions, and the host.
Using his wonderful skills of diplomacy, Podo asks the host a few questions about the Inn," My brother, if I might be so bold as to ask, how long its been in business? About what time of the year is business the most buslingly? Are you the original owner? Who's the cook? What style of culinary arts does the cook prefer?"
Podo continues to ask some additional question, "My brother, do you perhaps have a vegetarian offering? Or perhaps a simpler meal of not so much meat? If not, perhaps berries or fruits?"
While listeing to the hosts answers, Podo will try to determine if the answers are valid or if the host is hiding something.
Sleeping Arrangements
Podo chimes in to the group about his being flexible, "Brothers, I do not mind if we share the space or the expense, whatever is easier for us..."
Arm Thursday February 28th, 2008 6:03:37 AM
Arm nods his thanks to Kadaz and says, "Thank you, my friend..the next time it's on me.".
Once they all gather at a table however, he says as quietly as he can, "I have the feeling that something is not quite right here. Shadow, see if you can check the food for any odd smells...for all we know, the innkeeper can be in league with the enemy and is just waiting for us to arrive. Sorry for the caution, but it's best to err on the side of safety, especially with the evidence of them poisoning people in the past.".
Questions and Answers (ADM Scott) Thursday February 28th, 2008 7:28:37 AM
The innkeeper takes the gold and and puts it into a strong box he produced under the counter. "You have your pick of which rooms you would like. As for what is going on lately, is we have not seen as many travelers around here of late. I think that is because of the rumors of creatures gathering somewhere past Gavelin's Ridge." He turns to Podo and says, "The Lion's Rest Inn was origanally built by my father, and I took it over after he and my mother decided to retire in Plateau City. The cook is my wife and I would not really say as to style of her cooking other than it is country style. I do think she can put something together for someone that is not really interested in our meat offerings. My daughter will be out to get your orders." He moves back to the bar and pulls a rope. About a minute later a young looking woman appears and moves over to where the group is sitting, "What would you gentleman and ladies like to eat and drink?"
Those that are paying attention do not notice any signs that the innkeeper and his daughter are anything other than what they appear.
Tell me your food order and the sleeping arrangements.
Shadow Thursday February 28th, 2008 7:30:44 AM
"I will have beef pie and ale, please." He says to the serving girl.
After she leaves, "I am open to sharing a room with anyone since I am not very picky about that."
When the food arrives he will check it out, but is pretty sure nothing is wrong with it. He feels very comfortable here.
Thar ail Baerer Thursday February 28th, 2008 1:51:53 PM
Looking around, he waits for a time when the bartender and maid aren't looking. Before anyone eats, he'll cast Detect Poison and ensure that their foods are safe and secure. He does feel a little better that Shadow seems to be comfortable with the food though and hopefully his spell will verify the safety of the fod.
He'll continue eating and says "OK, so we can fit four to a room? How about I room with Shadow, Kadaz and Julian? (Picking smaller stature or height people so we can fit in a room and not be too cramped...)"
Julian Thursday February 28th, 2008 6:23:01 PM
"Thar, that means me, Shark, Sallie and Ledger, of course. Still, we only take one bed and a little space on the floor. I know it sounds like a lot, but it means a lot of ears and eyes for staying alert."
Julian is sceptical about all the concern over the food, and though he is worried that the his pie and baked vegies are going cold he is grateful that he won't be poisoned.
Kirsten Thursday February 28th, 2008 8:29:00 PM
"If it is not too much trouble, I'd like a room for myself," Kirsten speaks up quietly, knowing she is the only female of the group and valuing her privacy. She then offers to pay whatever extra it might cost to make it so.
At dinner, she will order a simple meal of meat and vegetables.
Podo Friday February 29th, 2008 12:51:12 AM
"Vegetables, please that is if you have some. Also, if possible, bread and soup, please. As for boarding, I'll go wherever I can roam and find a spot of floor." says Podo to the servant girl.
Arm Friday February 29th, 2008 6:05:10 AM
Turning a bit green at the thought of rooming with Ed, yet not wanting to create undue expense, he says, "I'll take a room with Edmund, and I'll have the beef pie and some water, if you please.". As the girl leaves, he says to Ed, "If you keep me awake, I'll toss you out the window, and you'll be sleeping in the stable.".
Night at the Inn (ADM Scott) Friday February 29th, 2008 7:23:15 AM
The group orders their meals and finds the meals decent, maybe not quiet as good as Sampson's but much better than the food they have dring their own camps. The group talks about who is in what room and they try to have a decent nights rest. Most of the group try to get a good nights rest before they will head to the more unpopulated areas.
During the night a few people awaken for unkown reasons, and a few of them look out thier windows to see a person on a horse descend behind a hill. Those that see the figure are not even sure if it was human but watching a few more minutes those of the group do not see anything else.
The morning dawns bright and clear and the group gets up has breakfast. The group needs to decide on which direction to go. Again, they could continue on the road and cut across the rougher parts later or take the shorter route over rougher terrain.
Thar Friday February 29th, 2008 9:32:16 AM
Waking up, Thar says a brief morning prayer and goes down to the main room. When he hears about the horseman on the hill, he asks the innkeeper if he knows anything about it.
He'll order a quick breakfast, eat it and when the group discusses which direction to go, he suggests "We need to go over rough terrain sometime, so is anyone in the mood to start now?"
Julian Friday February 29th, 2008 5:49:23 PM "Might as well leave the wagon here and take the shortest route. I'm sure with a few coins we could leave stuff here, it would be looked after - wagons and carts don't require much loving. S'pose I'd leave a horse or two here, too. With feed if needed. "How far are we looking at? If we need to make pace then I'm happy to ride a horse, even without the saddle. Sallie and Shark can trot along. Otherwise, I'd walk. I'll wear the chain shirt rather than breastplate for the walk. Might leave that here too."
Kadaz Friday February 29th, 2008 5:56:09 PM
"Well, it's time to decide which path to take. Personally, I'd suggest now taking the rougher path, over the hills. We need to do it eventually. And we can leave the cart and carriage here. Horses and mule, too, probably. I'll be on foot, for sure."
Edmund Friday February 29th, 2008 9:43:15 PM
((Sorry guys, been rather ill and out of it this week. I'm feeling better now, but almost forgot to post.))
Edmund doesn't keep Arm awake at night, and sleeps very silently, only muttering the occasional word, and even this very quietly.
He takes ages to wake up, though, and when he finally does rise himself, he is rather useless to everyone until he has had a cup of tea. After that, and a bit of a wash-up, he is more himself.
"Over land?" he says with unrestrained disgust. "No horses?" Despite the bad time Edmund has had with his horse, he's still not too keen on walking. "How much shorter is shorter?"
It seems pretty clear that they're going to have to walk eventually, and once Edmund sees the reason of leaving the wagon and other things here, he buckles and agrees to it. "All right," he says with a degree of sulkiness. "I suppose if we must, but I say, this adventuring is a dashed dismal business sometimes."
Distance (ADM Scott) Saturday March 1st, 2008 10:05:37 AM
Based on the map the group determines about one and a half days to the place that marks the X, but that is a rough estimate based upon the map.
Kadaz Sunday March 2nd, 2008 5:16:52 PM
Kadaz will visit the innkeeper to make arrangements. "We may desire to leave our carriage and cart here. What rent would you charge to have these parked out of the way, but with your boy to watch over them?"
Podo Sunday March 2nd, 2008 7:12:12 PM
"Walking's Great! I love to walk! When do we start?" asks Podo.
With the little Podo has, packing up to ready his stuff for the journey is no trouble at all nor does it take much time. Donning his Mithril chain shirt, his New pants, and then the white robes of Alemi, Podo turns around and gives a blessing onto the room. With hands outstretched , palms upwards, Podo asks Alemi to bless this room and keeop the Inn's occupants safe.
Julian Sunday March 2nd, 2008 9:43:08 PM
Julian joins Kadaz to discuss the leaving of the carriage, and his breastplate armour. "If I'm walking with you lot it is easier to keep up if I wear my chain shirt." Julian is as eager as Podo. With his dog and badger armoured in their barding, with the pack saddle on the dog and the tiny riding saddle on the badger, Julian is ready to go.
Arm Monday March 3rd, 2008 6:03:34 AM
Arm agrees to take the shorter route as well, "I have a feeling that the enemy is aware that we are close. If they know that we have a cart and a carriage, they may expect us to travel the road first, so let us surprise them if we can.".
He then makes sure that his equipment is properly placed, then sets off.
Leaving the carriage and cart - Starting off (ADM Scott) Monday March 3rd, 2008 9:01:47 AM
A couple of people ask the innkeeper how much he would charge to watch over their cart and carriage and the man says, "Well it would not cost us much except to watch over it, so how does 3 silver a day each, mostly to pay the stable boy. As for the animals I would need to charge 5 silver each per day to cover the feeding and cleaning of the stalls." He seems to have taken to the group and is much friendlier this morning with the group. He even has brought out breakfast without mentioning how much it would cost.
The goup then gets their stuff together to depart. The start off over country, the country is fairly open praire with very little coverage. The terrain is hilly so the group has to decide if they go up and down or around the hills as they travel.
They do not see anyone or buildings as they travel in the morning. As noon approaches the group stops and while eating lunch they spot 4 figures (too far away to tell exactly what they are, but seem to be men on horseback) watching them a couple of hills away.
Shadow Monday March 3rd, 2008 9:06:58 AM
Shadow wakes up refreshed and ready to head out. The group decides to walk the rest of the way and Shadow rubs his backside and thinks this might be better than the cart ride. He enjoys breakfast, and does not have to seperate any of his stuff since he carries most of his stuff anyways.
As they travel through the open land Shadow feels a little more relaxed than he was in the cart. He still misses the comfort of the buildings around him, but is feeling better.
When the group spies the figures he says, "I think we should leave them alone for now, but if they get closer we then can re-evaluate what to do."
Thar Monday March 3rd, 2008 10:07:52 AM
Thar continues to enjoy the outdoors, especially seeing the animals and trees again. Since the area is more dangerous, he'll abstain from his normal hunting and rely on trail rations.
Hearing Shadow's suggestion, Thar nods and continues watching the figures.
Going up and down the hills looks safer in his opinion, since they can take a good survey of the surrouding area at each peak. He suggests this to his companions.
Julian Monday March 3rd, 2008 7:39:00 PM
Julian enjoys the time outside, the breeze, the space, the big sky above.
"Up and down or round and round, much the same either way really."
When the four horsemen(?) are spotted Julian quietly counts out loud, "Two, three, four of them. Two, three, four, five, six, seven of us. Nothing to worry about then. Perhaps they are just out for a pleasure ride, through a monster infested praire..."
Podo Monday March 3rd, 2008 8:31:25 PM The Lion's Inn Podo happily continues to take the Walker attitude in everything he does, thanking the host for his kindness and the way prices.
"Brother, thank you for your hospitality and for the fair prices on all you have offered us." says Podo to the host.
As Podo is walking on foot, and he has prepared all his belongings for traveling, Podo is light of foot, and eager as a beaver to get started!
Over the hillsides & Praires When Podo spots the other riders off a far distance, he mentions to teh group, "Perhaps those are the other rangers the Elf spoke of?"
Edmund Monday March 3rd, 2008 9:01:21 PM
Edmund follows along and, when Podo spots the riders some distance off, he raises his eyebrows and squints.
"Riders!" he exclaims. "I doubt anyone else would be riding about out here--and even if they were, they may have information. Best be on our guard!"
((We are having a storm at the moment, so Ashley may be late getting home from class to make her post.))
Kadaz Monday March 3rd, 2008 10:03:28 PM
Kadaz looks over his equipment deciding what to take and what to leave. Finally he decides everything in the cart isn't really needed. After breakfast he shoulders his pack and hefts the weapons.
While on lunch break he looks over at the watchers. "Anyone have a way to check out those guys from a distance?" he asks.
Arm d20+7=25 Tuesday March 4th, 2008 6:03:48 AM
Arm peers as best he can at the riders (spot=25), then says, "I don't have any capability to see any farther than I can. Too bad we don't have our old friend the bat to do scouting for us...hm, Ed, can you summon something to help out? If not, I'll see what I can do. Otherwise, I think Shadow is correct..we leave them be for now.".
Finishing up lunch (ADM Scott) Tuesday March 4th, 2008 7:36:47 AM
About 1/2 way through the lunch break the riders leave going down the back side of the hill they were on. The group wraps up lunch and heads out again. They get to the top of the hill that the figures were on, but see no trace of them at all.
The group heads on towards the X on the map, and they are really starting to get to wild country. The rest of the afternoon is uneventful, and the group comes upon a clearing that looks to be used as a campsite.
Shadow Tuesday March 4th, 2008 7:46:36 AM
Shadow searches the ground where the riders were, but does not find anything other than the tracks of 4 horses. "I don't know what they are, but it does look like horses."
He is very alert the rest ofo the ride trying to see if he sees them again.
When the group gets to the area that looks like an old campsite, Shadow says, "Well should we use it?"
Thar d20+9=12 Tuesday March 4th, 2008 11:15:08 AM
Thar looks at the abandoned campsite and nods at Shadow's idea. "Might as well use it, and it's better than stumbling about in the dark."
"Shall we take the usual watch positions?"
Before bedding down for the night, he takes a quick look around the area, and looks for any recent tracks or signs of someone or something that has traveled recently through here. (Track = 12)
Kirsten Tuesday March 4th, 2008 1:14:26 PM
The paladin follows along with the others throughout the day. She remains rather quiet as she looks around at the countryside.
When they reach the campsite, she will help the others to set things up.
Kadaz Tuesday March 4th, 2008 5:32:07 PM
"We must keep a very good watch tonight." Kadaz cautions. "If those riders mean us harm they'll be back. Birdie and I will take middle watch, as usual."
Julian Tuesday March 4th, 2008 5:33:50 PM
Julian helps set up the campsite. "Assign me a watch and I'll do it. I'll have 4 sets of eyes and ears, and some keen noses too to be alert."
Edmund Tuesday March 4th, 2008 11:02:28 PM
By the time they reach the disused campsite, Edmund is exhausted and ready to sleep.
"Looks like we missed them. I wonder about this."
With a look around, he beds down and prepares himself for the night.
Podo Wednesday March 5th, 2008 1:13:58 AM
"Seeing as I don't have the skill set to help out, I'll take the same watch as last time, if it's okay with you folks." Podo says as he prepares his bedroll.
Arm d20+7=11 d20+13=26 Wednesday March 5th, 2008 6:04:04 AM
"I'll take the second watch again," Arm replies, "But I think I have something that may help us during that time.".
When it is his turn, he begins by muttering some arcane words and summons an owl, ordering it to scout the area and report back what he sees (Spell: level 1, Summon Monster I-owl). While he waits for the report, he scans the area as best he can (scan=11, listen=26).
OOC: R.I.P. Gary Gygax
Shadow Wednesday March 5th, 2008 7:07:33 AM
Shadow helps check out the site to make sure there is nothing that would cause the group trouble.
The Campsight and a Note (ADM Scott) Wednesday March 5th, 2008 7:12:53 AM
The group starts to look around the campsite and the surrounding areas. While Thar does find some tracks of men and horses there is no indication of any other creatures or animals being in the campsite recently. While Thar is checking the area out he finds where the men probably had their horses picketed. Whoever starts the fire finds that there is a scroll case sitting near the fire pit. After checking it out (and finding nothing of harm about it) the group open it up and find a message to them:
Mithril Order,
I would invite you to my home, but only if you are willing to join the side of myself and my Master. You must realize the you have little chance of winning by now and it would be a waste of valuable resources to fight between us. So if you have intentions of joining the winning side and seeing the prosperity of your beloved Plateau City, come to my dwelling by following the map that you got from the doppleganger.
I warn you now that I will not be so warm in welcome if you seek to enter my house with the intentions of bringing this losing battle to me. My Master is far beyond anything that you could ever think or dream possible. Do not make me have to make an example of you to those others that would dare defy me and my Master.
Your Dark Friend, Count Darkar
Thar ail Baerer Wednesday March 5th, 2008 9:18:52 AM
"Interesting person, this Count Darkar. It's nice of him to invite him to his house, though it appers his welcome won't be very friendly," smirks Thar.
"At least we can put a face to a name and does anyone know much about this guy or his background? I'm not real up on human royalty, so I'll little help. On the other hand, I say we visit him and let him know how much we like the city and don't appreciate his attacks against Plateau City," adds Thar.
Edmund d20+12=21 Wednesday March 5th, 2008 3:59:20 PM
Edmund considers the name of the count and does his best to recall whether or not he has ever met him or has any knowledge of him. (Knowledge Nobility=21)
"I think," he says after a moment's thought, "we should proceed as if we want to enter into an agreement with this fellow, the better to avoid any resistance up until the moment we face him. Then, once we have him before us, we can have him at our mercy, and can obtain some sort of satisfactory result."
Edmund doesn't say what he thinks a satisfactory result would be, choosing to leave that up to the imagination of the others.
"Of course, if he or his henchmen try to disarm us or something of that sort, we'll have to end the ruse a little sooner. He can't disarm me of my magic, though, and I suspect we might even be able to send a small group--perhaps Shadow and Arm--off to support us. If there is an attack, it would be nice to have a surprise group flanking them from another direction, or carrying out some other sort of ingenious attack or aid to us."
"It's clear at any rate," he says dolefully, "that there is danger and danger ahead. Not much choice betwixt the two, what?"
Kadaz Wednesday March 5th, 2008 5:05:33 PM
"Well, this is troubling" Kadaz notes. "I wonder how long he's been spying on us. And there goes any chance of surprising his forces."
Kadaz stares into the fire a while before asking his next question. "Is there anyone here who wants to turn back now? You should state your intentions here, before we get into a situation where you're support is needed. I'm committed to seeing this through and will proceed. What does everyone else think?"
Julian Wednesday March 5th, 2008 5:26:12 PM
Turning to Podo, Julian says with a chuckle, "If there's negotiations to be had it is best I stay away, hey Pode. I tried to help once and... it made things worse. "It might be worth considering what to do if we are disarmed. Whilst I have a certain magic flowing through my veins I still rely upon my sword. "I would like to be part of a flanking group. My wand here, is of Reduce Person - could be really helpful in that situation."
Kirsten Wednesday March 5th, 2008 6:39:03 PM
The paladin considers the note, its contents, and what her companions have to say about matters. She runs a hand back through her dark hair with something of a disheartened sigh. For something that had seemed so simple, merely an X on the map, this is all turning into something all too complicated.
She looks to Edmund, to see if he knows anything of this "noble."
"And if they've been following this far, watching us this long, who's to say whoever this is isn't listening in right now," Kirsten frowned.
"Even so, we have to do what we must to protect the city."
Podo Thursday March 6th, 2008 1:27:11 AM The Note "Anyone give any considerations to the idea that this invitation might just be an elaborate trap?" asks Podo to the group.
Diplomacy
"Yes, Julian, you're probably correct...we should just observe this event to see how the city folk handle the Wold in their city..."suggests Podo.
Arm Thursday March 6th, 2008 6:08:10 AM
Arm agrees with Ed, "Yes we probably should play along with this, but I'm almost certain that the first thing that will happen will be that they will disarm us. I will join the flanking party, but who's to say that they won't be prepared for that as well?".
Afterwards, he has some disturbing thoughts..thoughts that he may actually WANT to join the "winning side" for once..with the betrayal of Mira and the City Council, he wonders if it is really worth it. Setting about the task at hand, he pushes those thoughts to the back of his head...for now.
Shadow Thursday March 6th, 2008 7:14:34 AM
"I am always for making things unpredictable, but I am not sure that splitting the group up is in the best interest here. We don't know for sure what and how many things we will be facing. If we are not all present will that not tip them off that something is going on. If this Count Darkar has been spying on us won't he know our numbers?" Shadow says to the group and then responds to the other quesiton, "I have never heard of this count before, so I do not have any idea about what to expect."
Getting close (ADM Scott) Thursday March 6th, 2008 7:23:13 AM
The group has an uneventful night, but has not decided exactly how to approach the invitation of Count Darkar. Those with the map figure that about noon the group should reach the area on the map marked with an X. Then the group heads out still discussing what they are going to do.
(Okay, I need to have the marching order fo the group please.)
Thar Thursday March 6th, 2008 11:14:11 AM
(Before leaving) To Podo, Thar replies "I'm sure it is a trap that the Count is setting for us. But at least we know it is."
(After leaving) Thar replies to the group, "I'm thinking we should recon out the area first. We don't actually have to meet with him. If we find out where he lives or his group resides, we can attack from a less predictable place. Going in and talking to him wouldn't get us very far, in my opinion."
Thar will take either one of the front positions (next to Shadow to do some scouting?) or the rearmost position, where he can watch their backtrail and ensure that they aren't being hit from behind.
Kadaz Thursday March 6th, 2008 4:12:05 PM
Kadaz adds his views. "I agree that some scouting is advisable. But I will be in the main party. In fact, I'll go first. I suggest we send two scouts out, one on either side of the main group and a little advanced. Just enough to let us know if there's an ambush ahead."
Kirsten Thursday March 6th, 2008 5:47:35 PM
As they prepare to head out for the day, she listens to what the rest have to say. The paladin chooses to remain near the center of the group as they travel towards their destination.
Julian Thursday March 6th, 2008 6:06:24 PM
This halfling has little to say, knowing even less about the count and the recent goings on.
He would rather be towards the rear of the main group today.
Podo Thursday March 6th, 2008 9:56:56 PM Questions Turning to listen to Thar, Podo nods saying, "So, what you are saying is the best way to avoid a trap is knowing of it's existence?"
Order of Precedence
Podo calls for, "Second to last place, please!"
Edmund Thursday March 6th, 2008 10:15:27 PM
Edmund takes up his usual place in the very centre of the group--the better to be protected on all sides, though he'd never admit it.
"Have to keep an eye on what's going on," he says. "Best to be where I can see everyone!"
Arm Friday March 7th, 2008 6:01:03 AM
Arm thoughtfully taps his chin and says to Shadow, "You are quite correct, my friend..this 'count' seems to know a lot about us, far more than we do about him. Therefore he quite probably WOULD notice something amiss if any of us are absent. I will take up the rear guard with Thar, and let us be off.".
Arm (2nd illegal post) Friday March 7th, 2008 6:02:06 AM
As they begin their trek, Arm wonders why he has not heard back from his owl. He calls to it and waits hopefully for an answer.
Shadow Friday March 7th, 2008 7:13:43 AM
"I agree Thar, we should scout a little ahead of the main group, but not far enough that they lose sight of us. I would hate to get separated from our support." Shadow suggests as the group heads out.
Owl returns, But wait what happened to the scouts? (ADM Scott) Friday March 7th, 2008 7:22:46 AM
(OOC: Sorry but I forgot about the owl!)
Arm calls out to the owl and it returns to him, what Arm can understand is there does not seem to be any presence of humans around other than the group.
As the group heads out they are still traveling through somewhat plains with a few scraggly bushes around making the rolling landscape difficult to see too far in any direction.
About mid morning the group has just traversed a hilltop, when the group see Shadow and Thar disappear right before their eyes. One minute they are just walking ahead and the next they are gone.
Shadow and Thar are walking along in a fairly broad empty valley, and then a tingle runs down their spines, setting their hairs on end. Right in front of them appears (out of nowhere) a large black arch, surrounded by six large stone pillars. Each pillar has to be at least fifteen feet tall and topped with a statue of a grotesque creature, leering down in their direction.
Sorry, I don't know how to hide the spoilers from the rest of the party.
Thar ail Baerer d20+4=6 d20+4=5 d20+13=24 Friday March 7th, 2008 9:41:31 AM
Looking at the arch, Thar stops and sees if he can recognize anything about it.
Know (nature for the creature's ID. Note that I messed up my roll and it should be +5) = 7 Know (planes) = 5
Thar looks stupidly at the arch and drools...... (Nice low rolls...)
As he fails to note anything about the arch, Thar will also look around and see if anyone or anything is nearby. He'll look back to see if any of their companions can help ID the arch or how to operate it.
Spot = 24
Edmund Friday March 7th, 2008 4:48:38 PM
((I assume Edmund's Know. Nobility roll wasn't enough to provide any information on the count?))
When Shadow and Thar disappear, Edmund is so shocked that he actually trips and falls to the ground. Stumbling to his feet, he looks around, putting his hands in his hair.
"What is going on!?" he asks no-one in particular. Without further ado, he casts Detect Magic on the last known location of Thar and Shadow in an attempt to figure out just what became of them.
"Do you see them anywhere?" he asks the others with more than a little concern in his voice.
Kirsten Friday March 7th, 2008 5:00:10 PM
She stops when Thar and Shadow disappear so suddenly.
"Where did they go?"
The paladin looks faintly uneasy, not seeming to be comforted by the fact that her companions are vanishing into nothingness.
She will use her ability to Detect Evil.
Julian Friday March 7th, 2008 10:01:11 PM
Julian attempts to push through the group towards where Shadow and Thar were. "Come on, let's go after them. We're better off all together aren't we. It's probably only an illusion anyway."
Podo Saturday March 8th, 2008 12:49:19 AM
Being in the second to last position, cooupled with not being in direct line of sight, Podo's not sure what happened, but from the ruckus, it doesn't sound good!
Kadaz Saturday March 8th, 2008 6:56:10 AM
At the front of the main party Kadaz sees Shadow and Thar disappear. "If they don't reappear in 30 seconds, let's go after them." Kadaz takes a second to make sure his shield and axe are ready, than moves slowly towards their last postion.
Arm Monday March 10th, 2008 6:06:07 AM
At his friend's disappearance, Arm quickly draws his sword and looks around frantically for them. At Kadaz' suggestion, he agrees, "That would explain why so many people said there is nothing out here..".
Shadow d4=2 Monday March 10th, 2008 7:05:46 AM
Shadow looks at the arch that just seemed to appear out of nowhere, and does not seem to recognize much about. He waits to see if anyone else in the group has any idea, but when he looks back at the rest of his group he notices that they have stopped and not sure of why they have looks of concern on their faces.
The Glade and the Pillar (ADM Scott) Monday March 10th, 2008 7:14:46 AM
Edmund casts detect magic and their is a faint aura coming from what looks to be a wall in front fo the group. Kirsten cass detect evil and she gets a weak feeling that there some form of evil ahead, but not sure where it is coming from. The group waits what seems like an eternity fo rtheir companions to return, but they do wait the 30 seconds or so and move forward. They his Edumnds "magic wall" and suddenly Shadow and Thar reappear right in front of them. The group sees: a hidden glade, in the middle of the glade is a large black arch, surrounded by six large stone pillars. Each pillar has to be at least fifteen feet tall and topped with a statue of a grotesque creature, leering down in your direction.
Thar ail Baerer Monday March 10th, 2008 9:52:18 AM
Thar continues watching the arch warily. When his companions arrive, he sighs in relief as he realizes the "wall" was merely an illusion.
"What do you all recommend we do? Do you think this arch is the passage to our enemy's stronghold? Or is is something more sinister?"
Edmund Monday March 10th, 2008 12:11:22 PM
"Curious." Edmund remarks. "It appears to have been concealed by magic. The question is--did we blunder into it by dumb luck, or were we meant to find it?"
Looking at the arch, Edmund frowns. "Methinks that is bad news, that arch. I bet it is some sort of portal or something--I've read about such things. It might be a teleportation door, you walk through it and come out somewhere else!"
"Possibly somewhere quite unpleasant," Edmund adds. "Someone should try tossing a stick or something through it!"
Kirsten Monday March 10th, 2008 12:25:08 PM
Kirsten shudders subtly as they walk through that strange wall and reappear in the oasis. Her eyes are immediately drawn towards that arch, she peers at it a moment before commenting.
"I sensed evil, but I couldn't tell where it was coming from..." the paladin frowns. "Maybe this arch?"
Kadaz Monday March 10th, 2008 4:15:25 PM
Kadaz looks at the arch. "Can we go back through it, or is this a 1-way trip?" he asks. He picks up a rock and tosses it back the way they came, to see if it disappears.
Julian (mage armour) d20+5=18 Monday March 10th, 2008 9:49:28 PM
Bow in hand with arrow knocked, sword ready by his side Julian is ready to move forward at front of the group. His animals, as ever, are at his heels. Cast Mage Armour. Spot 18
Arm Tuesday March 11th, 2008 6:02:37 AM
Taking a deep breath to calm himself, Arm says, "Well, let us see what our 'friend' had in store for us. This time, we all go together, as we have no idea if this arch IS a teleporter and could possibly reset itself randomly after each use if it is.".
Shadow Tuesday March 11th, 2008 7:07:59 AM
"I agree, we should all move together just in case. How does this location match with the X? If it is close maybe this is what we were supposed to find, but if not are we supposed to find this?" Shadow says, and he is ready to move foward.
