Orcs and Giants


Preparation Addendum [DM SteveK]

Trace knows that the orcs are holed up at a farm about an hour's walk due east of Heranmar. It is a group of log cabin buildings in a lightly wooded area with cultivated fields. A small brook runs through the property north to south and it is all surrounded by heavier forest.

Shay flies out but does not see any evidence of the orcs (too far away).

It is now two hours past sun-up, and all the Children of Chaos are at Heranmar, but not together...

Trace clearly heard the orcs getting ready to raid the town, and so they can be anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour behind the arriving ranger.

Trace is in Heranmar. I assume from your post that he is in the same location as Peerimus.

Savin and Kit are walking around.

Since Heranmar isn't a big town, it would be fairly easy to get everyone together and plan if the group will wait on the attack or to take the fight to the orcs.

(OOC: Ahh, okay. I was just thrown off by the "all the Children of Chaos are at Heranmar, but not together..." comment. Also 13 hour duration on both Mage Armor and Overland Flight)

"If the giants are throwing rocks, I may be able to put a stop to it. If I can't stop the rocks themselves, I will turn their ire towards me and away from the town..." He looks to Kazak and Durgen, eyeing their armor and weapons up. The sorcerer may have some relative safety in the sky (although there was a fair chance it wouldn't stay safe once he stole the giant's attention), but they would be in the thick of it. There would have to be some care taken on where spells were going. It would have been nice if Quinn had stuck around. "This fight will be a test. And a grueling one, at that. Be careful, friends."

"Peerimus, say the word and I'll go inform the guard captain of what is going on. And follow as fast as I can behind you, if you are going to get a head start. I'm a bit faster when I fly..." He waits until he gets the go ahead and then rushes off to let the guards know of the impending attack. And of the fact that the Children were going to try to stop the fight before it reached the city. "They come to destroy Heranmar. Tell those who need to know that the Children of Chaos will not allow it."

(OOC: Just aheads up to you DM types about when we get to the fight itself. I'll be asking for the sizes/weights of the rocks. Letting you know ahead of time, so I don't put you on the spot with a weird question like that :D)

(DM SteveK: just assume that the wieght of the rocks is two pounds heavier than your maximum for your planned spell. :O)

"I agree we tell the town leaders. Kazak and Durgan you have that one. We will take the fight to the orcs and the giants, but the town should be on alert in case some slip around us. We will set up about 1000 yards to the east. I can recon faster than anyone as an Air elemental and will leave immediately to get a positioning on them. Head out to the east." He gives Yorrick a good pat and nods to Kazak. [Handle Animal Defend Kazak] The big bear moves over and prtoectively stands by the dwarf.

With that Peerimus will shift to a large Air elemental and streak off. [Fly speed 100 perfect] Covering a mile in under three minutes, Peerimus intends to go to the cabins and back at the furthest. Unless of course he sees them earlier.

"Come on brother, let's go talk to Selenie. That lass will be able to tell the other town leaders what is going on quicker and with more tact than we could. Is that bear of Peerimus' comin along?"

Durgan seems quite cheerful. Nothing like the prospect of bashing orcs to make him happy. You even notice him whistling an old dwarven battle-hymn as they hurry down the street.

Savin sighs at the usual lack of coordination and working out of basic tactics. He decides to assert himself hoping not to insult their new battle leader Trace.

"The way I see it is the giants are the main threat. The orcs might have a leader or two who can hang with our skills but the basic orc is just meat for any of us. We need to find a way to have our better fighters close the distance with the giants without drawing their fire or becoming subject to their longer reach. Firn'gaer, can you cast haste and invisibility on the dwarven brothers? If we three can close quickly, I am sure we can take one or two giants down a round working together."

Savin looks at the halflings acessing their skills. He doesn't know how they fight, so he asks, "What is your comfort level with this. Would your rather close and back stab or use missile weapons? What is your preference?"

Savin looks to the spell users, "One of you should attack the giants with us with long range spells. While the other keeps the orcs busy with Peerimus. Either cut them off with wall spells or summon monsters/natures allies to tie them up. We don't want to get flanked and have the towns people attacked.

Trace is devastating with his bow, so I suggest he stays with either of the spellusers to act as bodygaurd against a mass assualt and he can put his bow to good use.

We obviously need to meet them away from the town. My only real concern is the large canine tracks we saw. They could flank us and get to the town. We need to moblilze the militia to tackle them with bow weapons and get innocents safely inside grouped together. They should be able to hold them off until we get back if they have to hold them off at all.

Does this sound reasonable?"

"This is what I figure we will need to do. With as much range fire as we can must, we have to deal with the orcs from afar as the dwarves and Savin move to engage the giants. My hope is to have dealt with the fodder, before you arrive at the giants."

"As we physically engage the giants, Jurgen, Peerimus, and I will try to neutralize groups with crowd control spells like slow, black tenticles, summons, and other like spells. Trace, I don't know if you prefer close range or the bow, but you will advance with our melee group. Use the bow against giants in support of the dwarves and Savin or engage. Once groups have been dealt with, concentrate all fire power on the super-star destroyers." (Couldn't help myself had to add the Star Wars reference.)

Trace takes in all the suggestions and tries to summerize the best movment. Trace will cover from above for Savin and the dwarves. Except for Jurgan, if you have abiltiy, intercept the stones thrown by the giants to protect those on the ground. Kit and Kat, not knowing your abiltiy tell me if this is wrong, I will put you on our flank with missle weapons unless you move in. I will put Shadow with you at first and if you need back up I will summon two dire wolves to assist. I will postion myself in the middle in the air to cover you if needed. I have four more fly potions if anyone wants.

Preparing for Battle

Suggestions fly far and fast, and the two leaders of the Children of Chaos have thier say.

First, Peerimus gives the strategic decisions; the group will meet the orcs, giants, and doggies away from Heranmar. The druid makes his own preparations, sending Yorrick to Kazak and becoming an Air Elemental, then streaks off to scout/spy on the orc raiding horde.

On Peerimus' suggestion, Kazak and Durgan trot over to see Selenie and warn them of the coming menace. The blonde-haired lady may be old, but she seems well-versed at what to do in a crisis. Messengers on horses gallop out to warn nearby farmsteads and the newly formed town guards close and man the gates. Other able-bodied townsfolk man the walls with whatever tool at hand. Seeing their mission of warning the town a success, the dwarves trot back to the CoC.

Trace allows the suggestions to fly hard and fast before making the tactical assignments. The dwarf brothers (with Yorrick) and Savin in the middle, the halfling sisters (with Shadow) and some summoned help on one flank, Jurgen provides air cover, and Firn'gear and Trace fire long-ranged attacks.

With at least an idea of who's going to do what, the group soon moves out to the east to see if they can meet up with the raiding party and Peerimus.

They catch up with the druid in a heavily wooded area about a mile east of Heranmar. Looking out from the leaves, the group can see what Peerimus has seen for the last half-hour. (See map emailed.) It looks like the orc raiders have stopped for final preparations before coming to the town. A farmstead is in a clearing surrounded by a few trees and plowed fields. There is smoke coming out of the chimney and no sign of the family of five that Trace and Peerimus knows should be living here (from earlier rovings).

It looks like the initiative is with the Children of Chaos.

Feeling better that they warned the city leaders and guard ... Kazak walks back to the others with Durgan .... as they pass the guard and townsfolk pulling together the dwarven warrior smiles " your all doing well just as we thought you would ... nice work " says Kazak in a loud voice for all to hear

As they close in on Peerimus's position Kazak teases his brother" I've got a bear .... what you got ?" grins the dwarf as he pats Yorrick

Speaking in a low voice as they gather tgether by the out lying farm " i've couple flying potions ... so if ya think they will help i'll gladly pass them out "

" looks like we got the drop on dem ... so whats the battle plan ?" as Kazak eyeballs Trace

Savin whispers, "I see a lot of orcs but where are the giants? Trace did you see their tracks break off? Could they be heading for the town or are they using the orcs as bait to pound us with boulders when we attack them?

Still a few well place fireballs could end this battle for us on the orc side anyway. If we can kill half of their numbers, I would the rest would still be running next week.

Why don't we take out as many as we can with spells and arrows. I can close on the 2 closest with us and maybe lure out some giants as well. "

The Air elemental nods to Kazak and gestures. "A great deal of orcs and Savin do not be too hasty in your opinion of the strength of our enemy. A few well placed fireballs may just burn the farm down."

Peerimus looks back out, "I have not seen the giants either, nor the dogs. I would prefer to remain here with the cover of the tree and force them to come to us." Peerimus reaches out and touches Yorrick as he looks to Trace. It was now the rangers team.

"I'll start us off making it a bit easier to communicate..." Starting what Jurgen is sure is going to become tradition, he casts Message [Duration - 130 Minutes. Targets - All the Children. Range - 230 feet]. He turns to Kit and Kat. "All you need to do is whisper and it'll speak to all of us, as long as we're not too far apart. Since you two are probably going to be enjoying the stealthy life, I'll be sure to "

He looks to Trace. "I'm a bit nervous, not knowing where the giants are. The dogs too. Should we send Shay to scout around?" If the ranger says so, Jurgen will instruct the hawk to fly high enough that he's out of range of the orcs and to find where the giants are. "Or are we planning on using this surprise to attack? Firn'gaer and I could probably throw lightning at any of the groups. Thin out their numbers a bit. Although if a dozen of them die on the spot, I'm not sure it'll serve Peerimus' plan of making them come to us. They might just turn and run. Some illusions might work. Or polymorphing. It's up to you, Trace."

"Use summoned air elementals to drive into the groups. The summons will not give our position away unless we let them too close. This will buy use a little time to see which direction the giants and wolves are flanking the village on. That being said, I fear that they have advanced on the village in a three-pronged attack to divide any defenses that might be brought to bear against them."

"This is what I propose. Peerimus summon the largest air element that you can bring more than one in. I believe you can summon more than one huge air elemental. Send one at each of the groups of orcs. Jurgen, you fly over head and strike at the groups with Chain Lightning. Spend only as much time as you need to soften the orcs up for the elemental, and then come to the giants. I would suggest using Shay to keep you abreast of the other battles."

"Peerimus, you and I will divide the forces and head to meet off any flanking forces. Split the group like this - One dwarf with each group; one halfling with each group (for scouting); Trace you will go with Peerimus; and Savin will come with me. This will split our forces into evenly powered groups."

"Jurgen when you've crippled the orcs enough for the local militia to handle the remaining come to the giants. If I encounter the giants I will start by launching my empowered fireball into their ranks as we as to cover my combatant advance. I would suggest the same for Peerimus."

"If you find that the giants and the wolves are together, word will need to be sent. I will send Rufus with a flying spell. Trace, I would suggest Shadow. This way we don't have to thin our ranks should one group run into both giants and wolves. If that does happen, use as much crowd control as possible to delay until the others can arrive."

Trace ponders for a sec, to split up or stay as one. Many battles are lost due to being flanked and overwhelmed. I will split the group but only to scout. Trace gives flying potions to the two halflings so that they can use them for a fast retreat. I want the hawk to move out front high above and scout with the two halflings to split right and left Kit right and Kat left. Only to scout not engage the enemy. Once they have moved out far enough we will begin with small arms fire to draw the orcs to us and get them bunched up. Any spells or ideas on how to make them close their ranks go ahead and apply that. Once they are close enough we will set loose the fire, lighting, and air elementals as suggested before.

In the event that a magic user on the other side surfaces Savin will use his speed to close ranks and we will use what we can to fend off any attackers and I will fly above him to render support fire and aid if needed.

I hope to have a large portion of the orcs scattered to the winds before the giants return from gathering rocks. The dogs are off scouting the area and will return once the battle has begun. Once the dogs are seen, I will send Shadow and two dire wolves to keep them busy.

This is my general plan and how I see victory, war is fluid and things will change and it is up to us to adapt. Fell free to do what you think is best but I do ask that you do not break rank untill I call for it. Rember primary attack is to bring them in close together and then max out the power spells along with my arrows we should do some good damage. if they charge our dwarves will be our wall and we will hold the wall.

If no one freaks out and stops the plan Trace will wait for the scouts to move out and then take aim at the two unlucky orcs that have moved to far from the others.

These shots will not be fired if someone says hold.

Trace fires four arrows at the two orcs or all four if one dosent fall.

I'm a little confused on the plan other than we send scouts to locate the giants while we engage the orcs. Is that correct?

Now once we locate them, what happens? At that point we will completely engaged with the orcs. Do we fall back to the village? Do we try to disengage, with the possibility of members being stranded, and move to engage the giants? What if we learn that it is a three-pronged attack? How do we cut them off. The wolves move faster than the giants; so, it's possible for the wolves to attack the village before we even see the giants or finish the orcs.

These are Firn'gaer's concerns.

As far as a Haste spell, until warranted, we should not expend extra resources on the orcs when the giants and the wolves are probably greater threats.

I heard with my little elf ears that the giants are collecting rocks and saw the dogs scouting, this is not a three prong attack. The battle will change once we get involved but I am truly hopeing to scatter or kill the orcs before facing the giants and dogs. If needed we will retreat to the town and can do so no problem.

Trace will fire his shots unless Firn'gaer decides to take over command.

Peerimus nods agreement and in a voice that seems of the wind, "I can and will bring in several huge Air Elementals. That will weaken my ability to heal though, so take precautions." Knowing h can speak elemental without being in human form though, Peerimus shifts back. With that thought he does so. "Yorrick, stay with Kazak. and he gives the great bear a sound pat.

Savin waits impatiently for the battle to commence. He is getting so eager he is tempted to just charge ahead. They are only orcs after all. How bad could it be? Still he vowed to listen to his leaders and restrains his impulses.

"So Kazak, I propose a contest between us. Each orc killed is worth one point. Each giant is worth 3 points and a canine is worth 2 points. You have to totally kill it yourself without any other aid. Winner buys dinner for the other? What do you say?"

Kit is also eager for the battle to begin and she asks hopefully "Is it time for me to start scouting yet, is it is it" She has her trusty crossbow ready and with her special boots and belt she is confident that she will be of great help in defeating the orcs and the giants wherever they might be. She holds her ring of invisibility in her hand waiting for the word to go and scout then she will slip it on and disappear

(ooc2: for folks new to my DMing style... When there is no specific instructions in a post, I will interpret posts to the characters advantage where possible. Being a heroic campaign, I won't make PCs do obviously stupid things. The more specific a Player is for location, action, time, the less misinterpretations will occur. :-)

There are quite a few concerns from the group about where the giants and 'doggies' are, but preparations continue.

Jurgen casts a Message spell to give everyone a handy communication device. The sorcerer then casts Haste on all the CoC, Yorrick, Shay, and Shadow. (13 rounds)

Trace directs the tactical battle by sending out three scouts to look for the rest of the raiders; Kit right, Kat left, and Jurgen's Shay to fly up and get a bird's eye view.
The ranger wants to use arrows, bolts, and individual targeting spells to entice the orcs to bunch up and charge, then use area spells to slaughter them.
Trace then moves up to get a bead on the two orcs away from the others. He sees the orcs have the usual array of motley armor, melee, and bow weapons and are jawing at each other in low tones. They are continually looking at the forest, scanning with thier eyes.

Savin is directed to use his speed and target any spelluser that shows its face. He scans the orcs for any arcane or divine signs. His sharp eyes scan slowly, and then... yes! One of the orcs near the cabin (#13) flicks his fingers with a pinch of dust that the monk has seen Firn'gear do many times... a spell!

The dwarf brothers are set to guard the front from any attacks. Yorrick looms behind them as additional front-line support.

Peerimus begins to conjure 2 air elementals for the coming battle.

Kat moves off through the underbrush to the right (didn't roll for move silent, so taking 10 Move Silent:25, Hide:25) Through the underbrush Kat only moves 40 feet when...

Kit, hefting her crossbow, slips on a ring and disappears from most people's sight. Firn'gear can see the halfling mirror her sister as she moves to the left (taking 10 Move Silent:18, Hide:18) Through the underbrush Kit only moves 40 feet when...

While the CoC get ready, the orcs look like they are just about ready to move out, but the two orcs in the field (at BC,48 and BD,47) startle and stare directly at the line of Trace, Durgan, Kazak, and Peerimus in the treeline. Raising horns to lips, both of them blare a note of urgency, then turn around to run.

They are too late. The readied Trace fires two arrows, and both scouts are twitching on the ground in thier death throes before they take three steps.

Yet the orcs have served thier purpose, and the orc camp is milling with purposeful activity, but the CoC has the drop on 'em!

Seems nothings changed . . . The gnome thinks as the group charges head first into battle.

"Fine!" He says agitated. Firn'gaer lets loose a bolt of lightning that lances out towards the group out in front. The bolt strikes O9 and then arcs to O1-O6 and O10.

"This should be interesting..." The sorcerer turns to Firn'gaer with a grin on his face. Another lightning bolt was in order. Jurgen's target is considerably further away, centered on orc 39. It arcs to 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 30 (and I think it just misses 38). He tries to get a glimpse of how the orcs faired from his blast, to see if he can turn his attention to more important matters.

He feels out through the empathic bond him and Shay share, to find out if the hawk sees anything worth fearing. "I'm going to move upwards. This lightning can be thrown from anywhere on the battlefield..."

Orc 39 takes 50, Reflex save DC24 for half. The other orcs take 25, Reflex save DC24 for half.

Savin takes a double move and gets to AU35 crossing through the field in front of him. He draws his spike chain (free movement) and waits to see if his movement draws in any potential fun.

He calls back over his shoulder to Kazak, "I like my roast beef on the well done side with pan roasted potatoes and some nicely seasoned greens. I am looking forward to your buying it for me later tonight."

Still invisible and considering the options of being alone Kit all of a sudden remembers she still has that flying potion if she gets into trouble so she decides to take aim and fire her crossbow at number 8 two of her shots striking true and one just missing its target. Of course while she is attacking she becomes visible again but hopes her small stature makes her a small target for the enemies.

Firn'gear is agitated, but moves up 5 feet to see the field of battle and looses an arcing bolt of lighting that skewers through Orcs 1,2,3,6,7,8, and 9 and six smoldering bodies lay beneath the trees. Orc #6 is still on his feet, but doesn't look to be in very good shape. Firn'gear can't see orcs 4, 5, and 10 since they are behind trees and so they luckily escape the first magical attack.

Jurgen mirrors the gnome by also moving up to a vantage point and striking deep into another group of orcs. These fare much worse, as all are seen and targeted by the sorcerer, and all eight are slain. Through the empathetic link to Shay, Jurgen feels exhilaration of the hunt, and doesn't feel as if there is anything that is moving that is a threat.

Peerimus summons to huge air elementals that move like the wind towards more orcs.
With Firn'gear's chain lightning, A1 and A2 streak forward. Though their initial targets are gone, they both are able to fly 100' and use their reach to strike Orc #5. With a couple deft flicks of air, the orc is pounded into the ground.
The druid himself moves back towards Yorrick [AK/60] and casts Resist Energy Fire on

Savin finds the wet, plowed fields a serious inconvienence to running quickly (cost double movement) and after hustling out, he is only halfway across (at AQ,46) He's still not very concerned and calls back playfully at Kazak.

Kit'Miara is blocked from any potential shots on the closest group of orcs because they are either all dead or a couple of huge air elementals are blocking the way. A little longer shot provides here the ability to soften up Savin's targets, but two shots later, it doesn't look like any damage was done. She becomes visible but remains in the partial cover of the dense undergrowth.
(ooc: Light Crossbow range is 80 feet, three range increments = -4 to hit. Light crossbow is a move action to load, so Kit doesn't get her second attack at +7, only the extra attack due to rapid shot, but due to rapid shot, both attacks are at -2. This totals -6 to hit)

Kazak sips a potion and waits for some giants to arrive.

Trace sees some of his plans are not going as he originally thought, but that doesn't affect his shooting ability very much. His initial targets are also all dead or blocked, so he flies up and out (to AP,47) to give Savin some cover while he shoots an arrow at Orc #14, then another because of Jurgen's Haste spell. The orc staggers about, but amazingly is still standing!!

(ooc: has there been a ruling on using shot on the run? reading the description, you can move-fire-move; but says nothing of move-full attack-move. I'm ruling Trace can't shoot his full attack while using Shot on the Run for this battle.)

Trees: trunks (brown squares) block line of sight and provide total cover. Leaves provide total concealment from above within 10 feet of trunk.

Dense Undergrowth: 1/2 movement: provides 20% concealment for 5 feet and total concealment for more than 5 feet.

The sudden flurry of attacks has spooked the orcs, but they still act in disciplined order. Orc #4, #6, and #10 withdraw from the huge air elementals (full action, no AOO) and make sure they keep trees between themselves and the lightning coming from the south.

Orcs #11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 also move north, and conceal themselves behind the log cabin and chicken coop. Two ran into the log cabin.

Trace and Shay can see them gathering behind the cabin, and Orc #11 is giving hand-and-arm signals to the others.

Orc #14 is exposed to all the CoC in the treeline.

Steve, just a quick question for the future. Savin only did a double move which would normally move him 140'. Sprinting is quadruple move which gets him 280'. I understand hustling to be sort of inbetween double move and spring or 3x speed with would be 210'

Sprinting is typically only allowed when you are moving in a straight line and nothing is impeding your movement (like a muddy field). Not quite sure what your saying on Savin's movement because you described double moves and hustling in the above post. If I only got a double move though, I still should have been able to get to the location I was trying to.

Trace stays put at the moment having #14 in his sites, He fires another four arrows at #14 and ask that everyone to stagger about 10ft in diaganol so that they are not affected by a mass spell themselves.

"Shay can't see the giants. This may be over very soon, friends." Jurgen relays to the dwarves below (via message). Seeing the orcs behind the house scatter too well to avoid another blast of lightning, the sorcerer just grins. So they wanted him to get closer, eh? He could accomodate that. Instead of throwing another spell, he moves towards the orcs as fast as he can. "I don't really want to burn down that cabin, but would anyone mind if a few of these trees were dealt with?"

As he passes by Shay he tries to think of what to send via the empathic bond to get the hawk to check towards Heranmar. Not able to come up with anything other than the warm feeling of home, which he doubts his familiar would understand, he just shouts in their language. "The city. Check on the city! Giants and dogs!"

(OOC: I don't know the rules on double moves or "running" when using a flight spell. I'm assuming that it's just normal "you can move quadruple your speed". Which would put him right around AK 32, near the elementals, I believe. If not, I'll still move the same direction and put him wherever he should be. Ignore both rolls. The d10 was an accident and the d20 was made unnecessary.)

The orcs were dropping fast, from the description that Kit and Kat had given, Peerimus was expecting much more from them. That had him worried. The air elementals, though, have no such thoughts. They pursue and attack

Seeing, as predicted, the orcs were no concern and that the real threat still remains. "Where would the giants get rocks from around here?" He says to Peerimus, hopefully before he shifts and flies away.

"Rufus, I need you to scout the area. Look for any areas that might supply rocks or other considerable sized objects that the giants could use as siege weaponry. I need you to be quick as you can." He says to the tiny rodent.

<squeak> I will but someone tell the birds that rat is NOT on the menu . . . <squeak>

"You'll be fine. Remember what's at stake," he pauses to let the rat think for a moment, "sweet rolls."

The rat, if one could understand the body language of a rodent, stiffens with purposeful, puffed chest as if the Gods reached down and gifted Rufus with divine inspiration. Off as fast as the spell will take him he travels off northwest (10:00) from the group's position.

"I don't like that we have no idea where the giants and wolves are." He says in frustration. "Peerimus, if you have a fast flight form, I think you really need to locate the giants. Getting rocks or not, I'd like to set the ambush not start by charging the catapults."

Firn'gaer decides not to expend more resources on the fodder, but keeps a watchful eye towards the cabin, just in case.

Hold up Durgan, Dont bother with the orcs, Me and Savin and Jurgan can finish of this problem, stay fresh and ready for the giants, that is still yalls main target. Trace turns to Peerimus, go ahead and look in on Hernamar then if all clear circle back looking for the giants and dogs. Firn'gaer, once the giants and dogs are located, I want you along with the brothers and sisters to move on the giants while me Jurgan and Savin finish this off. Once found call for Peerimus to meet up with you and then when were done with the orcs we will move in and flank the giants when they are in combat with yall.

(ooc: Thanks, George for the question ƒº. Hustling is a double move. Also, for moving diagonally, the first square costs one move, and the second diagonal costs two. With the rough terrain restriction on the muddy fields already, going diagonally cost Savin 10¡¦ for the first square and 20¡¦ for the second square. I recounted just to make sure, and it took Savin 135¡¦ of movement to get to his present place. )

Trace hovers in place and aims carefully at Orc #14, placing four excellent shots into the orc. With 6 bleeding wounds in the humanoid, it is amazing that he is STILL standing!
The ranger continues to call out directions to the others: don¡¦t bunch up! Kit and Kat, don¡¦t fight yet and find the giants! Use Shay to check up on Heranmar! (Reminder: the group is just over a mile from Heranmar)

Jurgen tells the others (via message) that Shay can¡¦t see the giants. The sorcerer directs his faithful familiar to Heranmar to look for Giants and dogs. Then the sorcerer breaks cover and runs (x4 movement) to get closer to the action, (Overland Flight is 40 foot move, running = 160 feet, but I let him remain behind the air elementals instead of being by himself.)

Kit reactivates her invisibility and continues to work to find signs of the giants. As she is moving near the forest through a small clearing, she hears rustling in the woodline to the northwest, but nothing is seen (around R,50)

Peerimus is worried, but his air elementals have no such problems, both striking retreating orcs. Niether orc falls, but is is obvious they are completely outclassed by the air elementals. Savin continues his race, taking the quickest way out of the plowed field and then racing towards the cabin at a sprint. (ooc: at x4 Savin can get to touching distance of the orcs. I slowed him down so he can move and attack next round without inviting all the AOO and full attacks of the orcs. He out of rough terrain, at AV,29)

Durgan urges Kazak to run with him before all the orcs are gone. He plunges into the field, using the Haste to run (x4) as far as possible. ( 20 +30 feet x4 run = 200feet to AL, 38)
Kazak is more considerate of the battle leader and moves out a little, but keeps his position. The big bear keeps with him.

Firn¡¦gear looks to get his own information from his familiar, Rufus. The Rat runs to go look for a rock pile, and the gnome keeps a careful watch.

Trace and Jurgen can see over the cabin at what the orcs are doing behind it. Orc #15 moves up to within 10 feet of Savin and swings his battleaxe. Savin is stunned that at 10 feet away, the orc's axe bites into his flesh and rips a great wound!!! "Need some help there, Trace?" Jurgen sends through the message with a laugh. He watches orc #14 stand there and take another four arrows. His jaw drops a little as he sees it. He also catches the hit that Savin takes and shudders. The monk may have been able to take a beating, but a couple shots like that and Jurgen would be meeting up with Gargul again.

He catches what spells the orcs are casting [Spellcraft Check - Success with 20 and 22]. "Savin, you're busy but watch out. There is some magic being thrown. It's minor, but it could be trouble. I'll try to manage them. And you need any of those orcs distracted, tell me and I'll play with illusions."

The sorcerer flies forward another forty feet, putting him almost right behind air elemental 2. He wonders if Trace's orc (#14) was close to death. And then, putting aside that wonder, he decides to focus another lightning spell on that orc anyway in order to best spread the electricity. He's fairly certain that the bolts should hit all orcs from 11 to 15.

Savin winces in pain as the blade of the orc bites so deeply into him. He takes a double glance at the orc who did it wondering how he could have hit him from so far away. He looks up and then up again his sharp gaze piercing the illusion. He shouts as loud as he can, Some of the orcs are really giants! Frost Giants! They have some magic on them! (ooc spot check 35)

Savin tumbles forward 5' to avoid the AOO (tumble check 27) drops his chain (free action) and launches into a flurry of blows against his disguised foe O15.

Trace calls for Savin to come back for healing and run, no need to face the giant alone. Every one else advance on the cabin but keep close to each other as so that we meet them at the same time, no one on one. Trace calls again for Peerimus to come back.

If Trace still can see 14, if need to will fly up enough to do so but I think he can where he is at because of his hight in the air.

Trace will fire another volly of arrows hoping this will bring down that orc or giant or what ever it is.

Interesting, illusions covering the orcs. Crafty Peerimus decides to stay with his original plan of doing a pass over Hernamar. 1 mile is not far, but for a battle that few minutes is a life time. Peerimus continues to climb at his maximum rate. From here he can easily see the town. The approaching orcs might be more difficult, but there was little that could escape his highly trained sight for movment and detail, Especially as an eagle.[Spot 43]

The Air elementals move past the orcs as the strike, taking up positions between the tree line and the orcs. There would be no safety in the trees this day.

Jurgen provides vital communications for the group while flying above the battlefield. He flies forward and then casts another lightning spell that arcs to all the orcs he can see. Orc 14 is fried and expires, and the others don't look like they like the feeling either!

Savin staggers, but is able to see through the illusion covering the Frost Giant. Knowing he can dish it out faster than the giant, the monk charges in, dodging too quickly for the giant to follow and brings forth a flurry of blows, two striking the being, and two others sliding off stronger armor than expected.

Durgan holds his position, waiting for more opponents to show themselves.

Kazak decides to provide a target with Durgan and so sprints himself to the middle of the field. Yorrick the Bear is able to keep up without much trouble.

Trace urges Savin to come back until the others are able to arrive, and calls for Peerimus to return. Unfortuneately, Peerimus has gone beyond the extent of the Message spell, and Jurgen is unable to contact the druid. Since his initial target is on the ground, Trace turns to #15 and proceeds to make it a pincushion. Overcome, the orc falls to the ground.

Peerimus races into the sky (x4 movement) taking as much altitude as possible, and Shay matches him wingbeat for wingbeat. (80x4= 320' at 60* up angle). In six seconds he is 105' further from the clearing and 270 feet in the air. Amazingly it is a clear day and the piercing eyes of Peerimus can see the distant walls of Heranmar. There is nothing attacking the town nor seen moving in the fields surrounding the place.

The Air elementals move past the orcs as the strike, taking up positions at the tree line, but it looks like the guarding is not needed. From the last hits, the orcs sprawl and do not move.

Kit freezes and looks at the bushes. She is soon rewarded to see two orcs in the bushes with short bows. It is obvious they do not see the invisible Kit.

Orc#11 bellows a command Listen DC10 and speak Frost Giant Highlight to display spoiler: { NOW!!! Take out the speedster and the flying wizard!} and more beings begin to appear.

The first group comes out of the forest to the north, and consists of eight large white canines. Growling, the wolves split into two groups, the first going towards the elementals, and the others running across the fields south.

Three white wolves attack A2 (elemental gets an AOO). Two miss, but the third bites hard (AC 10, 10, 29, Dam 17).

The fourth opens its mouth and a frosty breath strikes the elemental. 15 damage Reflex DC 16 for half.

Yet more orcs boil out of the cabin and the chicken coop's open back. Three move to triangulate Savin (Orc#17,. #18, #19) but don't get too close to him. The monk can see the illusion for what it is, and all three Frost Giants attack! Four great axe swings tear into the monk as he is flanked by the giants. (AC 32, 34, 35, 23miss, 33 Dam 22, 22, 25, 22= 91)

Two more orcs (Orc #26, #27) move out from under the shed and point slender wands at Jurgen. Two lighting bolts strike out at the sorcerer! (Damage 19 and 21; Two Reflex Saves DC 13 to take 9 and 10 respectively)
Orc #13 also casts a lightning bolt spell which strikes Jurgen (Damage 25; Reflex Save DC 17 for half at 12)

Orc #12 stands where he is watching the flying Jurgen intently.

Orc #11 makes more hand-and-arm gestures towards the woods to the left and right.

DM SteveK: O15 is down, and only three are hitting Savin. Two only performed a five foot step and so were able to do a full attack, while the third struck once.

"And as for the boulders, I don't suppose ye ever went giant hunting with the clan defenders? Ye only have to worry about the boulders if they are not aiming at you. They rarely hit what they are aiming at."

With Peerimus out of range of the message spell, Jurgen uses his empathic link to tell Shay about the pain he's in. He hopes the hawk gets the point and bothers Peerimus. They had underestimated the "orcs" and, right now, Jurgen and Savin were paying for it.

[Reflex Saves - Success with 22, 24, 29 [versus DC 13, 13 and 17]]

"I'm in trouble guys. I'm seconds away from passing out." He looks towards the house and, seeing how in trouble the monk is, starts flying to AZ-31. "Savin's probably worse. He needs to heal. Savin, run south to me. I can't stay in the open anymore and cast. I'm certainly not strong enough. If you let me, I'm going to put us in a resilient sphere to catch our breath."

If the monk joins up with Jurgen, the sorcerer will surround them both in a Resilient Sphere (Duration - 13 Minutes. Effect - 13-foot-diameter sphere). "Heal up. I can drop this sphere the moment we're ready, but they may dispel it." If Savin continues going and doesn't meet up with Jurgen, he'll instead cover himself with a Greater Invisibility (Duration - 13 rounds). Regardless, he'll send another whisper through the spell. "This is going to be tougher than we thought. Be careful. If you can, separate our enemies. And if you are in trouble at all, pass a message to me and I'll send it to the group."

If Shay relates what is going on Peerimus turns and head back, diving in low to close distance quicker. Dive at 60* down Speed 160x4 until 5' off the ground and then straight back to the fight.

A2 slams each of the wolves as they close.

The Air elemental then shoots skyward 60' straight up and releases any of the wolves trapped to plummet back to earth.

Yorrick moves with Kazak isuing a challenge across the fields towards the giants as he moves.

Firn'gaer moves forward 20-ft and sends an empowered fireball at the Winter Wolves moving around to flank Savin. One catches fire and burns to an unmoving chunk of flesh, and the two others look seriously singed.

Savin messages to Jurgen, then withdraws, trying to get to the sorcerer's position. He is able to withdraw the first few steps without giving the orc-giants an opening, but further movement allows Orc#17 a swipe, and only the discipline of Savin's training allows him to escape the blow. (AOO AC 30)

Durgan hustles (x2 move) to the north east to cover Savin's retreat. (100 feet move)

Kazak moves forward and urges Yorrick to help cover the others from the trees. Hustling on his own, the dwarf is able to move from the soggy fields and to the woodlot.

Jurgen meets Savin in the middle of the field and casts a Resiliant Sphere to form around the both of them. Yet Orc#12 has been watching Jurgen (Readied action). The spellcaster identifies the evocation, and is able to Counterspell Jurgen's attempt!! (Spellcraft: 31, Improved Counterspell allows a higher level spell of same school to automatically counter. Normal counterspell allows same spell to counter casted spell.) The sorcerer and monk are now in the open without protection!!!

Trace concentrates his arrows at Orc #11 and three strike the enemy leader. The final arrow is knocked out of the air by the "orc"s sword.

Shay screeches in anger and pinwheels to fly back towards the farmstead. Peerimus can hear the bird... "Jurgen hurt... big trouble!"

Peerimus turns and head back, diving in low to close distance quicker. Doubling his speed by diving down, Peerimus (with Say wingtip to wingtip) is able to be five feet above the ground near Yorrick, Durgan, and Kazak in mere seconds. (ooc: Peerimus only went dive speed for x2 before running out of ground, but would definitely be able to get to the battle in one round, and so the DM did an estimation for simplicity sake)

Air Elemental 2 slams the wolves as they close. (AoO Wolf F AC 33 Dmg 13; Wolf E AC 32 Dmg 13; Wolf G AC 26 Dmg 20)

Air Elemental 1 moves forward strikes at Wolf H, but misses.

A2 then transforms into a whirlwind to better attack multiple opponents. It moves across all three wolves and pulls all three into its powerful vortex shooting skyward to keep the three suspended 60 feet in midair. (move-attack-move for Spring Attack. Elemental will release next round for action).

Yorrick moves with Kazak isuing a challenge across the fields towards the giants as he moves.

Kat'Miara begins moving through the woods back to the left to see where Kat is. It is impressive to see the new group the haflings are with are NOT running from the fight, but continuing to press the attack.
Kit'Miara sees two more orcs silently slip up by the first. Still, they are not attacking, but watching the fight in the fields and cabin. There is still no sign of the human family supposedly living at this farm.

Trees: trunks (brown squares) block line of sight and provide total cover. Leaves provide total concealment from above within 10 feet of trunk.

Dense Undergrowth: 1/2 movement: provides 20% concealment for 5 feet and total concealment for more than 5 feet.

Three winter wolves bay gleefully at the two vulnerable heroes in the field. Quickly surrounding Savin and Jurgen, they breathe their icy breath at the duo. (Reflex Save DC 16 three times for 15 (7), 14 (7), 12 (6) damage.)

Three other winter wolves yelp like puppies as they are hefted into the air. They continue to attack the winds about them and all strike true. (AC 28, 25, 26 Dam: 9+4, 14+5, 8+4, or 29 damage with the elemental's damage resistance.)

The last winter wolf tries to bite A2, but misses (AC10)

Orc #26 and #27 point their wands at Durgan who is exposed and fire bolts of lightning into the dwarf. (Reflex Save Dc 13 two times for 22 (11) and 23 (11) damage)

Orc #17, #18, and #19 (that Savin has said are frost giants) back up to put some of the shed and cabin between themselves and the approaching heroes. All three take boulders the size of a watermelon and throw them at Trace. Two strike the ranger leaving large bruises. (AC 25, 23, 10miss, Damage: 15 and 14)

Orc #11 keeps shouting orders and making gestures at the woods to the east and west and brings his sword up in a pure defensive measure.

Orc #12 turns his attention back to the elementals and attempts to dispel them again, this time succeeding to banish the elementals from whence they came. (Dispel: 27) The three hapless wolves plummet to the ground sixty feet below (26 damage), and one does not move.

Orc #13 feels that Jurgen is done for, and now keeps his concentration on the other wizard, Firn'gear...

Jurgen looks to Savin as his sphere fails. With a flick of his wrist, he repeats the last gesture of the spell. No luck. Then he turns his eyes towards the concentrating orc and curses.

"It's not my fau-" Out of the corner of his eye, he sees the wolves' breath come at him. He's unable to escape the first wave and cringes as the cold covers him. Ignoring the pain for a moment, he leaps up to avoid the other two blasts. Just barely does he escape the full attack, but they still do enough damage to take him out of the fight. Midway to the ground, Jurgen starts to pass out.

[Reflex Saves versus DC 16 - Fail with 11 [15 Damage]. Success with 17 and 24 [13 Damage]]

"Save Savin!" The sorcerer whisper-screams through the message spell. Just before he hits the ground, he frantically grabs at his chaos tattoo and thinks about Savin. Just maybe the Crones were watching...

And then it all fades to black.

Peerimus curses to himself at Jurgen goes down in a hail of frost and ice. If they lived through this he would have to remind them that Savin can take care of himself and not to rush head long into death to get to the monk. More importantlu now though was what to do. The Frost Giants were dangerous sure, but the leadership of the enemy force was a far greater concern. What he disliked most was the Frost Giants and Winter Wolves this far at all in the first place. Mysteries for another day.

The eagle glances to the woods to the east [Spot 36] and assuming he spies the group of four on the map. He casts Bakskin on himself and banks that direction, landing at the base of the tree [Row Y close to the trees East]

If he does not spy them, he casts Barkskin and continues forward 70' and banks slightly left by 10'

Savin growls as he sees the wolves close in and easily dodges their icy breath (no damage thanks to evasion feat saves 27,29,29)

He turns to Jurgen with a grin only to see the sorceror tumble into an icy sleep. Shock crosses Savin's face as he realizes that Jurgen is in real trouble.

(ooc Gonna have to an if/ or post depending on the circumstances...sorry

If the winter wolves fall to Firn'gaer's lightning blasts, Savin will kneel and pull out a potion of healing and feed it to Jurgen healing him 10 points and getting him back into moving trim.

If the wolves are still in fighting shape, Savin picks up Jurgen and runs as fast as he can away from them using his combat expertise to avoid AOO ac 36. (if allowed to tumble while holding Jurgen, Savin will do so. Savin is easily strong enough to carry the weight. rolled 30, 36, 36 minus any modifiers you deem appropriate for tumbling while carrying someone.)

Seeing Durgan pelted with lightning the younger brother takes action and looses a barrage of Javelins from his effiecent quiver (quick draw feat)

Aiming for one of the wand wielding orcs (#27)(range is 15 sq's =75 ft) the javelins arc thru the air to their target .... the first finds its mark with a vengence " thats for shooting me brother " growls out Kazak

ooc: just getting better and better!! now I can't update the map at all. Will be very generous with descriptions and requested actions...)

Jurgen falls covered in hoarfrost, his heroic heart barely beating. Faintly he hears the screaming challenge of Shay, who has arrived and is now within 5 feet of Jurgen.

Firn'gaer urges Lhari to save some of the Children of Chaos with his own magic, and the staff is more than ready. "The blessings of the Broken Spiral are my life, well, relatively speaking", it replies, and Lhari sends a chain lightning that strikes all three winter wolves. Orc#13 identifies the spell the gnome casts through Lhari (Spellcraft: 24) but chooses not to do anything about it, the the full lighting bolt strikes! Only the second wolf is fast enough to dodge some of the blast and even then, all three fall to the ground, overcome. The gnome then moves up to get a better view.
Rufus is not seen.

Peerimus glances to the woods and spies the four orcs. He casts Bakskin and lands at the base of a tree opposite the orcs. (Can charge straight line; is 40 feet away from orcs in woodline)

Trace calls for Shadow (Handle Animal: 14) and the Panther, from long months of work with the ranger, sprints (x4 move to AZ,29) to guard the monk. Trace himself flies down, pulling his CSW wand and arrives at Savin. (x3 move to get there, can heal next round)

Savin sees the winter wolves fall to Firn'gaer's lightning blasts, and the monk kneels and feeds the sorcerer a potion restoring some measure of health (heal 10 to Jurgen)

Kazak aims a series of javelins at Orc #26 (orc #27 is behind a tree) and two strike the humanoid, pinning it to the wall. The orc's feet beat a tattoo against the untrimmed logs before growing still.
He talks to Yorrick, and the big bear raises on two legs and roars, keeping close to the dwarf.

Durgan taunts the giants, and hustles up to the three orcs that Savin identified as giants. (x2 move = 100 feet)

Kat continues to move through the undergrowth looking for her invisible, unmoving sister.

Peerimus and Kit are close together (though Peerimus doesn't know that) and see the four orcs in the woods to the west of the fields.

Kat is in the woods slowly moving west (will take at least four rounds of movement to get back to Kit)

Durgan is moving alone to the three frost giants disguised as orcs and Durgan can charge next round.

Kazak and Yorrick are within double move of Orc#27, but can't charge because of the trees.

Shadow, Savin, and Trace are in a north-south line 60 feet south of the cabin.

Shay and Jurgen are in a north-south line five feet west of Shad, Sav, and Trace.

The four orcs in the woods pay no attention to the landing eagle or the invisible halfling.

The three remaining winter wolves get up from the field and runs for the covering forest, disappearing into the boughs.

Orc #26 points his wand from around the treetrunk (80% cover) and fires another electric blast, this time at Kazak. (Reflex Save Dc 13 two times for 14 (half = 7)

Orc #17, #18, and #19 (that Savin has said are frost giants) shuffle to meet the charging Durgan and, with axes in one hand, continue to throw rocks at Trace, two hitting again. (AC 29, 28, 21miss, Damage: 15 and 15)

Of Orc#11, #12, and #13 no one can say (since the heroes are all grounded and can't see over the cabin). However, Durgan can hear some giants talking before some objects appear over the roof...

The first is a rock aimed at Trace, striking the ranger again. (AC 27, Damage: 20)

The second is another rock, also aimed at Trace, striking him for another bruising jolt (AC 31, Damage: 13)

The third is a lightning bolt that's lined up and strikes Shadow, Savin, and Trace (all 35 damage; Reflex DC 17 for half (17))

ooc Ouch I think Jurgen is dead no matter what happens. He was at -6, got him 10 points of healing which gets him to 4 points and now he takes at least 17. Guess we are going in front of Gargul unless he has some protections.

Savin smiles down at Jurgen and says, "Always sleeping on the job!" Another bolt roars in and Savin easily avoids it. (reflex save 22) He decides he isn't feeling very well and uses his Monkly curing ablilty to give himself 28 hps back and says, "I think we need to split up! to easy for them to target to many of us!"

Savin will move off 70' in a SouthWest direction to get some room to manuever and keep an eye on those spellusers.

OOC never got the last map so I can't pick a spot but please put me in a logical place.

Peerimus studies the 4 orcs. Might they also be giants? There was a relatively safe way to discover the truth of them and with that thought, he begins casting.

Trace is hit two more times with the bolders, "geeze, them turkeys have a good eye". Then him Savin and Shadow the arcing blue bolt coming in and all jump quickly out of the way. Not able to heal more than one at a time Trace calls for Shadow to head back to the tree line and then grabs Jurgen and flies for the tree line himself.

The potion touches Jurgen's lips and he shudders awake. He looks around, trying to see how long he was out. He guesses, looking at Savin, that it was no more than a few seconds. "Looks like I owe you dinner. Thanks." His hand pulls out a curative potion, but before he can drink it, he sees an attack incoming towards Savin and Trace (and Shadow).

When the lightning bolt streaks by, the sorcerer flinches and beckons Shay to his shoulder. Immediately, Jurgen begins to cast another spell. He scowls, wishing he could blast the enemy spell-caster. Instead, he had to get away. As Trace reaches out to grab Jurgen, he reaches out and lays a hand on Shadow, completing the spell.

The Dimension Door activates and the three of them (Savin too, if he wants) pop out of existence on the field and pop into existence at behind the tree-line where the Children were hiding previously. "I'm okay everyone. Trace and I are going to heal up and then return to the battle. If we're not retreating, then I'm going to use some subterfuge to see if I can't turn this fight around. Kit and Kat, I have no clue where you two are right now. Durgen and Kazak, as long as you can do so without harm to yourself, continue assaulting those giants. If Savin joins you, he should be able to Dimension Door you away if things get too hairy. Firn'gaer, if there comes an opportunity for you to do an area-based dispel on these so-called orcs, do it. Otherwise, keep blastin' away, If someone finds any living orcs who are actually just orcs, let me know."

He turns to Trace, shaking his head. "This is what we get for charging blind..."

Durgan walks near the disguised giants(out of reach and out of black tentacles range) and motions with his hand. The simple gesture implies that the giants should come and fight him. "Come on ye uglies. Who's feelin lucky today eh? Whatsa matter? Too scared to fight without some magic hiding yer ugly mug? Ye don't look too good as an orc either."

Durgan takes a firm grip on his axe and shield and waits. He's fought giants before, he knows what comes next. He prepares for the assault with his special defensive knowledge.

Kit tries to quietly move closer to Peerimus and plots to attack with the druid. In her eagerness to get to the eagle, she steps on a couple of small sticks, snap!

Savin decides being a big target has its drawbacks, heals himself and heads out to be more elusive. Trotting to the south-west, the monk avoids the soggy fields that bogged him down so much and takes cover behind a tree trunk.

Peerimus the Eagle begins gyrating to cast a spell while Wildshaped. He anticipates discovery of the nature of these 'orcs' when the elementals arrive in a few seconds...

Trace decides the rocks are much too accurate, and lifts off carrying the very hurt body of Jurgen.

Not a normal trick of the panther, Shadow understands and obeys Trace (Handle:29) and races for the treeline himself, a black blur through the fields.

Jurgen awakens in the arms of Trace, flying above the ground. The sorcerer uses the ranger's touch to DimDoor (DM rolled Concentration:23) to the safety of the woods with Shay and Trace. He then begins coordination efforts via the message spell.

Kazak ducks the one lightning bolt (only targeted once for 7 damage), then tries to Intimidate the lone wand-wielding orc while making for the shelter of the cabin wall. The dwarf hopes that Yorrick goes along for the ride as well.

Firn'gaer advances and throws a Black Tentacles at the "orcs", targeting directly in front of Orc#17. Four shouts of alarm are heard, and only one, out of sight of Firn'gear, manages to escape being grappled. The other three are wrapped by the invasive black cables and are bludgeoned.

Durgan keeps away from the giants reach and taunts them to attack. He waits to let them come to him.

Trees: trunks (brown squares) block line of sight and provide total cover. Leaves provide total concealment from above within 10 feet of trunk.

Dense Undergrowth: 1/2 movement: provides 20% concealment for 5 feet and total concealment for more than 5 feet.

The four orcs react both to Kit's poor movement and the eagle casting a spell. The bows come up and arrows begin to rain on the druid-eagle! (AC 21, 17, 18, 20, 18, 15, 13, 19) and every single one of them failing to find a target.

Orc #27 (and not the dead #26 :-)(opposed check: 22) is not fazed by Kazak and Yorrick's false charge. He does back up some, putting a different tree trunk between himself and the bear and dwarf. Then he shoots another lightning bolt at the pair. (Kazak and Yorrick take 17 Damage; Reflex DC 13 for half= 8)

Orc #17, #18, and #19 all attempt to break free, but only #18 is able to overcome his many assailants and go out of sight from the CoC.

Twice, Firn'gear feels attempts at bringing down his spell, but the Tentacles resist any dispelling and remain.

Ok guys, were doing fine and I am sure we have this. The brothers are going to keep on the giants and when Savin returns will join them. I will move in to cover up above and Firn'gaer will try and dispatch the orc 27 with my help if needed. Jurgan will heal himself and by that time he will either aid Peerimus, Kit and Kat or back up the brothers.

Once the message is relayed and Trace heals himself (17hps) he will fly his max at a 45deg angle back to the fight. Trace will leave the csw wand with Jurgan if he needs it.

"Thanks for the offer, Trace. But that's a wand I can't use." Before the ranger gets moving again, Jurgen places his hand on Trace's shoulder. "Thank you." Then he waves to the ranger as he flies off. With a quick downing, Jurgen drains a Cure Serious Wounds potion (27 HP gained).

When the potion hits his system, Jurgen pulls out another and starts to survey the field. "Durgan and Kazak, if you can tell me what's going on on the other side of that cabin, do so. An exact position on the leader would be nice. Trace, same goes for you from the air. If you can spare a moment." As Kat moves passed him (if Jurgen can see the halfling), the sorcerer points towards Peerimus. "I think haste is the better action for now. So that those blades of yours can shed some blood. I'm sure we'll need your stealth, just later."

"At the moment, I know there are two groups here. Peerimus is facing one. The dwarves another. Firn'gaer, if you feel safe moving closer to a fight, either group would probably be stalled with a well played Slow spell. But use your own discretion on spell choice. Savin, there's a lone orc in the middle of the field who is casting spells and causing trouble. If you could stop it from breathing that'd give Kazak an opportunity to stand with Durgan. Remember everyone, Heranmar is depending on us."

Savin sees his friends being threatened by the wand wielding giant and decides to charge and finally land some of his own punishment after taking so much so far.

Peerimus, confident the creatures are only orcs after the arrow assault, takes wing to the north. Move 160' north to W/28. Yorrick was with kazak and the he knew the dwarven brothers would be trying to close and engage. So he needed to get there quickly to provide support and specifically of the healing kind he was sure.

As the tentacles occupy the supposeded orcs on the east side of the house the dwarven warrior eyes the door on the south side " hey Durgan i've got an idea " smiles the dwarf wickedly

Pointing to the door " we'll go thru the door and pop out the door on the other side " pulling out 4 sticks from his haversack " smokesticks ... we'll pop em and toss dem over the house ... 2 straight over the top and two over to da west side .... hopefully they will think we're coming around the side and flank em .... with da three of us coming thru one after da other we'll put a thumping to em ...... whatcha say brother ?"

Turning to the west and the pesky wand wielding orc as he dodges the lightning blast (d20+10=14 reflex save made it !) the dwarf points at him and growls out " we're coming for ya "(d20+5=11 bluff check)

" hopefully he keeps his eye on us and not whats coming" thinks Kazak

Turning to the mighty Yorrick Kazak gives him a fierce growl and encourages the big bear to roar .

With a wink at Durgan that should cover the sound of da door opening if we hafta kick it open "

Handing two smokesticks to his brother he sparks his two and throws them over the far corner of the shed " throw yours two over to cover da doorway "

Once the plan starts to unfold Kazak steps up and opens the door .... kicking it if needed with Yorrick's roar covering the sound!! "lets go " growls Kazak as he charges thru the door and into and hopefully thru the building and thru the smoke to close with the enemy

Trace is the voice of calm reason as he coordinates the group on recovery and occupying the giants. The ranger heals himself (standard action) and then flies out 30 feet up and out (move action with haste) over the field to get back into the fight.

Shadow is in the bushes where Trace last told the panther to go.

Jurgen gets a potion in him and then feels much better. The sorcerer gives out his advice and information, keeping himself in the concealment of the trees (Total cover). He does give the bird to the giants, telling Shay to look for anything. (x4 movement and ½ for ascending in a spiral, Shay is quickly 120 feet above the battlefield. The eagle

Savin launches himself at Orc #27 wanting to land some punishment. The trees get in the monks way and he can't charge (no straight line), and even his full movement isn't enough to get him within fist range of the green-skinned mage. Savin gets to within 15 feet of the orc, keeping a tree between them. In a few seconds, he thinks, it will be all over for the lightning bolts!

Peerimus is confident that 3 huge air elementals will be able to handle a few orcs, and the druid-eagle takes to the sky skimming the field to get to the fight quickly. The druid knows Yorrick fights much better when he is able to direct his friend himself.

Meanwhile, the 3 Huge Air Elementals appear ten feet above the trees and attack the orcs. The dense undergrowth makes it difficult for the elementals to get a clear hit, and only one orc sprawls dead. Two other are seriously hurt, and it will take a miracle for them to get away. (Cover 20% miss chance: 82, 90 both hits, 47, 13 one hit, 12, 46 one hit)

Kazak retrieves an alchemy stick and scratches the igniter before throwing it over the corner of the shed (DM Rolled attack 20). (the brothers can only handle, light, and throw one smokestick per round.) He starts roaring battleoaths and Yorrick echoes the dwarf as Kazak prepares to kick in the door.

Durgan takes an offered smokestick and throws his over the top of the house. (DM rolled attack 18) Just like his brother's, Durgan more-or-less gets the stick in the right direction and it immediately is transforms into a thick foggy screen.

Kat continues her track hopeing to see something that will help her find her sister and or the others. The Halfling comes to the edge of the treeline just as an eagle conjures three air elementals and flies off towards the cabin. It looks like the elementals are dealing with some orcs in the treeline.

Firn'gaer decides that he'll deal with the lightning throwing orc. Casting Telekinesis, the gnome gets great satisfaction at easily knocking the wand to the ground. Oh, the look on that orc's face!

And the wizard's black tentacles continue to bludgeon the orc-giants.

Kit pauses, but with the air elementals in the way it will be next to impossible to shoot an orc. Looking around, Kit sees her sister silently come out of the woods. Kat doesn't wave or notice Kit standing but 15 feet away (she is invisible after all :)

Three orcs left in the trees are set upon by three huge air elementals. The orcs turn and run, hoping to get lost in the woods. (Each elemental gets two AOO on the orc they cover, and an additional AOO on the adjacent orc. Please roll the 20% cover too) If any survive the AOOs, they attempt to get lost in the foliage, elemental needs a Spot check DC 14, 13, 7 respectively.

Orc #27 stares stupidly at the wand of lightning bolts on the ground, and the rapidly approaching Savin. Eyes wide, the mage casts a spell, and the area is filled with a dense fog and he is lost to sight.

Three Orc-Giants #17, #18, and #19 are in the Black Tentacles. This time, all three break out of the entwining mass. (Grapple 36 v 34, 31 v 23, and 36 v 31)

Flying high enough above the fields, Firn'gear, Trace, and Shay can see what is happening behind the cabin. Two of the orcs have escaped the Black Tentacles and are making a dash to the east. The other orc that escaped the Black Tentacles has joined three other orcs, all of whom are slogging their way through another field on the opposite side of the cabin.

In their own language, Jurgen calls out to his familiar. "North-east. Follow those orcs, but don't get too close to them. We need to know the numbers we're dealing with."

"Peerimus, on your way by, could you call some wind to get rid of that fog so that Savin can get rid of that orc?" Jurgen shakes his head at the spell-casting orc. If he was smart, the next spell to cast would be invisibility to hide. And then to run as fast and as far as he could get, before Savin found him. "Firn'gaer, well done with the wand. I'm not sure where you should go next. The orcs escaping to the north and the east have me unnerved, but I think we'll have to deal with the group by the cabin first. Kit and Kat, if those orcs get finished by the air elementals, we need to find the rest of this band. There may be a group hidden in the bush to the fair north. Don't do anything that will put you out of reach if you need help. Kazak and Durgan, your plan sounds good. Peerimus will reach you quickly to provide some back-up. But you'll have a me by your side momentarily."

With that the sorcerer pockets the potion he was about to drink and casts another Dimension Door, moving himself right behind where the dwarves currently are. When he pops into existence he gives them a grin.

Savin sees the orc starting to cast a spell and launches a fist at the spellcaster trying to stun him with stunning fist. He hits ac 28 for 22 points of damage and the orc needs a fort save of 23 or is stunned for his round.

(ooc Steve, I need this resolved before I can post again. The variables get to big...sorry)

SteveK: The orc tries to get his spell off, but Savin is too fast, a fist strikes him to the ground, and the monk sees that he doesn't have to worry if the orc is stunned (ie. he is = 19). He needs to decide whether to bind his wound to take him prisoner or let him die...

Savin looks around for immediate threats and seeing none decides that having a prisoner to question might be to their advandtage. This was a very heavy magical raiding party and he wonders if their was a power behind it.

Last Round Correction: Savin sprints right up to Orc#27, staring him in the face and daring him to try anything. The orc tries to get his spell off, but Savin is too fast, a fist strikes him to the ground, and the monk sees that he doesn't have to worry if the orc is stunned (ie. he is = 19). He needs to decide whether to bind his wound to take him prisoner or let him die... (ooc: no fog occurred)

Jurgen urges his familiar to follow the fleeing orc to the north-east to see where they are going and the numbers of enemy there. The sorcerer then casts Dimension Door, popping on the south side of the cabing with a grin. [AV/18]

Trace flies north as far and as fast as he can to take up postion over the giants. (80 feet x4 = 320') Knowing that hovering over the giants only 30 feet up could be a problem, Trace also gets higher (ooc: DM help because of the map). [AU/11, 60 feet up]

Wasting no more time, Kazak opens the door and barrels thru the cabin. He immediately sees the giants had removed the back wall of the cabin, and he is able to see the orc-giants nearing the treeline to the north. Kazak avoids the Black Tentacles and smoke to run after the enemy.[AW/12] With a roar, Yorrick follows the dwarf, squeezing through the door and trotting out the other side. [AU/11]

Savin treats the orc for a rattled brain and shock, confident that he has stopped the thing from dying, and then relays the info that he has a prisoner [AG/16]

Peerimus' Huge Air Elementals slam the fleeing orcs, turning them into useful mulch for the trees. In pursuing the orcs, the elementals found two more in the woods and repeat the process of creating fertilizer. [A1=H/49, A2=K/48, A3=N/46]
Peerimus wings up and flies to get an eagles view of the battlefield. glances that direction and alters course. Climbing quick as he can to 40' he continues north and a little east. [Y/13, 40 feet up]

Durgan follows his brother through the cabin. As he goes through, he sees five dirty and scared faces trussed up in the corner of the hearth. [AW/13]

Firn'gaer Dim Doors 10-ft directly behind Savin. [AG/17] In looking around, the gnome can see four orcs running to the trees across a muddy field. Trace flies up and directly over them. Kazak, Yorrick, and Durgan dimly seen through some smoke are bursting out of the back of the cabin in pursuit.

Kit (invisible) [U/59] and Kat [Y/58] 'Miara stand in awe of the three huge air elementals tearing bushes apart searching for some fleeing orcs.

There are no more visible orcs in the woods to the west.

Orc #27 is stabilized and unconscious on the ground beside Savin.

Two orcs to the east continue to run away and crash through the dense undergrowth and trees, rapidly being lost from sight. The great swath through the bushes and vines attests to the fact that they were certainly NOT as small as orcs...

The four racing across the field make it to the trees and look back. One growls an series of orders, pointing at the flying ranger and the attackers on the ground.

Orc#11 hefts a rock at Yorrick, barely missing the bruin.

Orc#12 weaves a spell, but not at Trace. Instead, the cone of freezing cold marches across the ground to bring glacial temperatures to Yorrick, Kazak, and Durgan! (27 damage, Reflex Save DC 19 for half = 13)

Orc#13 casts a different spell, and attempts to encase Trace in a sphere of impenetrable energy! (Reflex DC 21 to not be trapped. If fail, he can no longer move or see anything except the walls of his green spherical prison.) (Spellcraft: DC 19 Highlight to display spoiler: {resilient sphere}

With the enemy about them destroyed, the 3 air elementals rise up 50' and look for more targets. A1 A2 A3 spots[13,32,25]

Peerimus continues along a northeastern flight path to AI/2. Peerimus will ready a Greater Dispel against the orc caster. [Check 19 if needed]
It is certain that the main leaders of the force will escape. When it came down to it, the druid realized, he wanted them to escape. If they all escaped he could and would follwo. He would learn who or what was behind this pairing of frost giants and orcs and from where they were springing forth. Then he would crush them.

Yorrick takes the full brunt of the cold and growls a response, but he remains as told to by Kazak.

"They're running in all directions. North, west and east. Savin has a prisoner. Which means we can get information about this from him. So we should kill the rest of these before they can escape." He kicked the ground. This was no way to fight a battle. In the undergrowth, they could hide forever. There would be no easy way to find them. "Kit and Kat, we need you in this fight. Come straight north of you and fast. Follow those who are heading west. Shay is following the eastern ones, so that's a problem we'll have to follow up on."

Hearing Durgan pass on that there were people in the house, Jurgen flies in. He looks over them and breaths a sigh of relief. They were alive. He looks north, very much wishing there were two of him so that he could chase after the orcs and untie these people.

"My name's Jurgen. We," he gives a quick wave to Durgan, Kazak and Yorrick, "are part of the Children of Chaos. I'm going to free you," he pulls out his dagger and cuts one of their bindings, "but you are going to have to trust me when I say that it's safest where you are. There are orcs and giants all around and we want to make sure that you're safe. So, be courageous for just a bit longer, and stay right here."

(OOC: If only freeing one of them will give me enough time to cast a spell this round as well, he'll do that and then Dimension Door to roughly AV/105. Otherwise, he'll just spend the round freeing them all.)

Savin pulls out a potion of cure moderate and sucks it down feeling the wounds heal on his body. He looks over to Firn'gaer and says, "I can dimension door behind them next round if you want to come along or even better you can dimesnion door and then I can attack!

Hit them with fire spells if you have them. I think frost giants are more vulnerable to them."

Savin looks down at the orc at his feet and says, "I think this one should be out for a while."

Kit still invisible starts running as fast as she can towards the ones heading west as she has been instructed. She checks her crossbow as she is going and makes sure it is ready to fire as soon as she is in sight of any enemies. She catches up to her sister and forgetting she is invisible yells "Hurry up and follow me sis"

Kazak stops and throws a series of javelins at Orc#13, yet the only one that looked true strikes a branch instead. (20% Cover, DM roll 11%). (AW/12)

The three elementals look for more targets, rising in the air and then moving north-north-east towards the fight, A2 leading the way. (L/43, O/40, and R/43)

Peerimus flies to flank the orcs and readies a Greater Dispel against Orc#13. 19 (AI/2) He wants to talk to his fellow CoC, but is unable to speak in eagle form. However, when he thinks about it, the Broken Spiral on his wingtip writhes...

Yorrick takes the full brunt of the cold and growls a response, but he remains as told to by Kazak. (AU/11)
Durgan points out the family to Jurgen before running out. He clears his field of fire, levels his crossbow at the orcs, and shoots Orc#18 four times, one missing because of the bushes. (20% Cover, DM roll 29, 25, 30, 16miss %). (AX/12)

Jurgen calls for Kit and Kat to get to the fight quickly, but is is going to be interesting to see how quickly the small Halflings can run. After all, it took the speedy Savin almost 30 seconds to cover the ground to the back of the cabin. Nevertheless, Jurgen moves into the house and begins cutting the bonds of the family near the hearth, trying to calm them down at the same time. He frees one, and looks to start on the others. The two men, one women and three pre-teen children look extremely frightened and not certain of thier immidiate change of status. (Diplomacy check?) (going to take a round per person) (move to AY/16) (Black Tentacles do not extend inside the cabin, but are on the outside.)

Shay continues to follow the movement of the trees towards the east. (move CG/13) The familiar can't see the giants due to the heavy growth, but has been able to follow the movement of the branches and bushes.

Firn'gaer moves up and readies a Dispel Magic (24) to counter Orc #12. (AJ14) Rufus decides to fly back to his master and chitters in his ear. Rock pile there through trees and the rat points west.

Savin drinks a potion and suggests some ways of attacking the giants in the treeline. (only Savin can see the giants, everyone else sees orcs.) (stays AG/16)

Kat'Miara hears Jurgen's message and sprints for the fight. Since she is on the edge of a muddy field, she skirts the morass and runs to the orchard trees. (move W/47)

Kit'Miara follows her visible sister, and shouts encouragement, making it obvious to her sibling where both twins are at. (move Y/45)

Trace easily avoids the Resilient Sphere, but has to reorient himself and makes no other actions. (AU/3)

The two orcs to the east are in the woods and slow down, making less noise and not whipping branches around. It is going to take some sharp eyes to spot them...

The four at bay continue to fight. Orc#11 continues his stream of instructions, and the others seem to follow his battleplan. Listen DC 15 and speak Frost Giant Highlight to display spoiler: { no rocks at the armored dwarfs, they're too tough. Rocks to the bear and spells to the flying archer.}

Orc#11 brandishes his greataxe in one hand and throws a rock at Yorrick. (AC 49, Dam:19) (Yorrick Ac29, hp63)

Orc#12 weaves a spell at Trace and flickers of fire surround the ranger before it is countered by Firn'gear! (Check 24 dispels) He immediately identifies the cause of the failed spell (Spellcraft:21) and informs the others of the counterspelling wizard.

Orc#13 also weaves a spell at Trace, and Peerimus casts his countering spell. Knowledge and anger spread across the orc's face (Spellcraft:21) as the two forces vie for superiority and then three fiery rays reach out to strike Trace down! (Counterspell DC 11 + caster level; 19 fails) The first ray misses, but the other two leave whips of scarred skin across the ranger. (AC 18miss, 30, 29 Damage: 13 and 12) (Trace Ac22, hp24)

Orc#18 hefts a rock at Yorrick in one hand and holds onto his greataxe with the other. Looks like he should concentrate harder to hit anything.(AC 13miss)

"Let be clear: you are not prisoners. You are welcome to do whatever you wish. I'm just suggesting that you stay here while we finish off the orcs. A lot of powerful magic is going to be flying and we don't want you caught in the crossfire." Jurgen tries to calm the worried family [Diplomacy Check - 7 Cha + 2 Bluff Synergy = 27]. He places the dagger in the freed man's hand. "Just as my friends need my strength right now, your family needs yours."

With a glance outside of the cabin towards Trace, he sees the ranger take a heavy spell hit. Hoping that the family puts their trust in him, the sorcerer flies outside of the house. "Thanks for distracting those spellcasters, Firn'gaer. I am fairly certain that I'm about to draw everyone's attention away from Trace. You all may want to take advantage of that fact. I don't think I'll be able to pass messages to the group anymore, but you will still be able to talk to me." As he flies by Kazak and Durgan, he shouts over his shoulder. "If you two think they're cowards now just wait..."

Stopping at AX/6, Jurgen casts a spell [Polymorph - Duration - 13 minutes. Type - Magical Beast. Form - Twelve-Headed Cryohydra. 13 HP healed.]. His body begins to reshape itself and get significantly larger. The average sized sorcerer's skin turns to a dark brown and begins to scale over. From his neck sprouts another eleven heads, each baring dozens of sharp yellow teeth. In the few seconds it took to cast the spell, Jurgen felt the sheer power difference between his human form and his new one. Turning all his heads towards the tree-line, Jurgen let out a booming twelve-mouthed roar.

He imagines how it must look, a 4,000 pound creature floating a few feet above the ground next to an elf with a bow. It's almost enough to make him grin... twelve times.

Yorrick roars in complaint as the rock strikes his rear flank. he may be extraordinarily protected for a bear, but against giants, it simply is not enough. The bear moves up with Kazak

The three Huge elementals shoot across the battlefield to arrive easily above the rock throwing orcs. [400' run to arrive 40' above the orc/giants]

Jurgen is about to attract a great deal of attention and Peerimus wonders if the sorceror has though of that. More interesting is that the orcs did not move further back. Perhaps they have no intention of leaving? Perhaps they have no where to go or perhaps more are coming. Peerimus hopes the one of the first two possibilities.

Peerimus dips down and quickly lands at AJ/100. Then looking back to his freind, he casts Animal Growth on Yorrick. the once large bear becomes Huge, rivaling a giant himself at 24' and over 16,000 pounds.

Trace lines Orc#13 with three arrows (the final one lodging in the tough skin without harm. The return scorching rays flay the ranger to an inch of his life. Limping in the air, Trace falls back, momentarily out of action. With the haste spell still active, (AX/59)

Jurgen's honeyed words seem to get through with the three adults in the corner. The man smiles and takes the dagger, sawing at the bonds on his family. "No, we ain't be movin' unless the roof be comin' down", he agrees fervently.
Then Jurgen moves outside and flying to the field in front of the orcs, he transforms into a 12-headed cryohydra! (AX/6)
Durgan reloads his repeating crossbow and move towards the giants masquerading as orcs (AW/9)

The face on Orc #11 becomes resigned and he shouts an order. All can hear, Speak Frost Giant Highlight to display spoiler: { They have murdered my family, but I shall bring them with me to Celciun. CHARGE!! It is a good day to die! }

The others delay a moment while Orc#13 casts a spell. Spellcraft: DC 18 Highlight to display spoiler: { Haste} and the giants charge! They aren't able to bring enough speed through the fields to bowl into the Children, but with Orc#13s spell, they easily make it into combat, and swing twice!

Orc#11 brandishes a greataxe and sweeps into Yorrick. The orcs eyes are glazed and a mad foam comes from his mouth. The huge bear is able to get a paw to swipe at the orc before the ax decends once, twice! (AC 40, 37 Dam: 29 and 25)

Orc#12 brings out a pickax with a spade on one end, and slides to meet Yorrick and Kazak. (Yorrick and Jurgen get an AOO if they have Combat Reflexes) With two swipes with the pickaxe, one flashes red against Yorrick and the other buries deep in Kazak. (Yorrick AC 42, Dam 22) (Kazak AC 44, Dam 30)

Orc#18 also holds a greataxe as he strikes at Jurgen once. He looks like he is going faster than Firn'gear's spell should let him, but certainly slower than the other two 'orcs'. The cryohydra gets a bite (AOO) before the axe bites deep. (AC 35 Dam: 23)

(OOC: I take back my comment about Peerimus' rolling. This is complicated...)

Jurgen ignores the commander's words, not understanding Frost Giant speak. And he is too busy adapting to the impressive new vision he has acquired to care anyway. Seeing Orc #13 casting a spell out of the corner of one of his eyes, his first instinct is to turn all his heads to watch. Realizing he doesn't need to, the sorcerer chuckles when he easily determines the orc's spell [Spellcraft Check - Success with 28] although having no way to pass on such knowledge to the group does bring some frustration

As Orc #12 gets close to Jurgen, one the sorcerer's many heads snaps at him. And hits! [Hit AC 30 - d20+17=32 - 11 damage] Unable to avoid Orc #18's greataxe, Jurgen uses it as an opportunity to figure out his bite attack and pulls off another hit [Hit AC 21 - d20+17=29 - 15 damage].

When the sorcerer-turned-hydra sees Yorrick and Kazak take the attacks that he had intended on facing, he lets out another toothy roar. He makes a 5-foot step to the west, putting himself between Orc #18 and the dwarves. And then turns all of his bite attacks on Orc #12 [7 Hits versus AC 30 - d20+17=35, d20+17=33, d20+17=34, d20+17=34, d20+17=30, d20+17=34, d20+17=30. Damage - 100 hp damage total - 2d8(3+2)+6=11, 2d8(3+4)+6=13, 2d8(1+2)+6=9, 2d8(8+2)+6=16, 2d8(6+5)+6=17, 2d8(5+6)+6=17, 2d8(6+5)+6=17. Steve, there's a critical failure in there. Thought I should let you know. Twelve rolls and I get a 1 instead of a 20. Sigh. If Orc #12 dies before all his attacks get off, Jurgen will make his remaining attacks on Orc #18.] His necks weave back and forth, but the sorcerer finds himself not even remotely dizzy. With each successful attack, Jurgen gets a better feel for his form. The taste of orc-giant doesn't exactly enthrall him, but he certainly enjoys the sheer force.

He also feels a tickle growing in the back of his throats. Although Jurgen knows what's coming, it still feels weird to have the taste of cold on his tongue. [OOC: In one round (1d4=1), Jurgen gets to use his frost breath]

Yorrick strikes at orc 11 as he closes. The claw of the bear bursting into flames as he attacks thanks to an Eberyon tear buried in the fur. The great paw strikes hard and tears deep. [Hit AC 27 Dmg 23+6 fire, Grapple Check 48] Yorrick carries the attack all the way through and pulls his opponent into a grapple.

Woldian defenders take 10 I am assuming the giant does not have a +37 Grapple, but a lot depends on if he does so Steve I got to hold on Yorrick. Also are the weapons magical that they are using? 76 Damage or 46 Damage

SteveK: Yes, both the orc#11 greataxe and orc#12 pick are magical. The bear's damage resistance doesn't compensate.

...If Yorrick is grappling he continues to maul the giant. [Hit AC 23/31/23 Dmg 25+ 1 Fire] Though only a single claw draws blood.

Jurgen the cryohydra slashes with teeth and tears large holes in the furs, armor, and bodies of Orc#12 and Orc#18. [AX/6]

Yorrick strikes Orc #11 as the enemy charges. The bear's fury ignores the greataxe. Yet in attempting to pull the giant into a furry embrace, the giant seems to easily slip away. Spellcraft DC 19 Highlight to display spoiler: {Freedom of Movement} [AS/8]

Durgan circles around Yorrick to engage the leader, carefully stowing his crossbow and getting his shield and axe ready. Yet in moving, Orc#12 has an opportunity, and the pickax opens up the dwarf's shoulder (AC 36, Dam 25). Blessing the haste spell of Jurgen, Durgan barely makes it around the huge bulk of Yorrick before the spell expires. [AR/8]

Orc#11 sees his opponent magically recovered, but makes no attempt to change targets. The greataxe screams through the air, striking the bear twice (AC 34, 27miss, 21miss, 36 Dam: 21, 22)

Orc#12 looks badly beaten, but convinced the most deadly threat is the hydra right next to him. Turning his spade against the beast, striking twice. (AC 36, 24, 17, 32 Dam: 29, 25)

Orc#18 also continues attacking the hydra, his greataxe striking. (AC 33, 23miss Dam: 28) Blessedly, the second strike misses, but it is too late for Jurgen, who transforms back to an unconcious human with many hurts. (at -9 hit points!).

The shimmering ball does not stop the elementals from continuing thier assault upon the orc. Blows rain down from two of the huge air creatures to no affect. The last takes to the form of a great 50' high Whirlwind and attempts to suck the small orc into itself. Striking the ground sends a billowing cloud of debis in all directions to 25'.
If the whirlwind's base touches the ground, it creates a swirling cloud of debris. This cloud is centered on the elemental and has a diameter equal to half the whirlwind's height. The cloud obscures all vision, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. Creatures 5 feet away have concealment, while those farther away have total concealment. Reflex DC 22

Jurgen watches as Kazak, who the sorcerer was positive was about to fall, shrugs off the orc's axe. Oh. Well now you tell me. He thinks to himself. That made his act of bravery a bit more ridiculous. At least it didn't get me in too much tro-.

Too late he notice's the blade descend into his flesh. With a grunt, he tries to move aside to avoid the second and only succeeds in better opening himself up to orc #18's axe. Somewhere, in the back of his mind, Jurgen wonders if Domi would ever help him learn the distinction between courage and idiocy... As the world faded to black, he doubted it.

[Stabilization Roll - Burning a hero point to give a 10% bonus. 20 or less, baby! - Ouch. Failure. By 3. Here's to regretting wasting hero points! Okay, so I admit that I'm a hassle. But I think everyone has to admit that the 100 damage done last round was pretty cool. :P]

Ooc: Durgan got hit by Orc#12, not Orc#11, and so the strike hit an AC 36 and penetrated for 25 hit points.

Firn'gaer moves a step to uncover Orc#11 from the huge Yorrick and targets the orc with a scorching ray. Casting Defensively, just in case, the 3 rays strike the orc. Staggered, he still stands and fights! [AQ/11]

Trace uses the csw wand again and then flys forward back to the fight with wand in hand. [AX/49]

Yorrick roars as the giants axe strikes and tears back into him with animal furosity to rival that of the frothing giant. A single claw penetrates the giants tough hide. The orc is bleeding from several mortal wounds, but the frothing face just doesn't believe it is dead yet, and STILL fights! [AS/8]

Savin will move across the field , jinking to make it impossible for anyone to get an open shot and slams a fist into Orc#18. Exclaiming in surprise and pain, it looks like Savin has got the giant's attention! [AV/13]

Durgan sees Jurgen fall and runs to the sorcerer pulling a potion to help. Orc #11, #12, and #18 all get a swipe, with only the leader connecting (AC 53crit36no, 30, 27, Dam: 21) The dwarf squeezes through Yorrick's space (double move) and running on the muddy field (double move) doesn't allow the dwarf to quite get there, although he'll reach Jurgen and be able to shove the potion down his throat in the next few seconds. [AW/8]

Peerimus shifts to human and pulls a scroll from his pack. [AR/10]

Two elementals pound ineffectually on the sphere of force. Understanding it can not get through, the third attempts to pick up the ball in a whirlwind, incidentally creating a muddy cloud of swirling debris 25 ' across. This cloud conceals Savin and Orc#18 and covers them both in mud. (Ooc: Creatures 5 feet away have concealment, while those farther away have total concealment. )

Kazak concentrates on killing Orc#12, but only strikes twice. The orc still looks full of fight.

Jurgen falls and continues bleeding from his wounds. (Woldian heroes can go to -9 + the number of Hero points currently owned. Jurgen now has one Hero Point and so will die at -11 hit points. Will still be alive [barely] at -10)

Kat fires her bow off as quick as she can at Orc#11. Yorrick is so huge that the little Halfling is effectively flanking and strikes with all three arrows. As the last arrow strikes, a great torrent of blood pours from the orc's mouth and he falls, dead.

Orc#12 turns his attention on the next-most-largest thing, and Yorrick becomes his target. Three strikes with the pickax all punch deeply into the fur and muscle (AC 38, 35, 35crit34crit Dam: 31, 24, 25crit19) The massive amount of damage (99 hit points) drops Yorrick to the wet ground! (ooc: did not take extra swing even though hasted because accidentally took one on the advance. Luckily for Yorrick.)

Orc#18 turns and concentrates on his immediate attacker. The two swings of the battleaxe look like they are going to take Savin's head off, but the axe passes through the monk each time without harm! ( AC 32, 33 Dam 22, 23 Blinking 27miss, 48miss) (Darn!)

It is unknown what is happening in the sphere containing Orc#13. Not only is the sphere opaque, but the mud being thrown up by the elemental is obscuring all visibility.

(OOC: Have I ever mentioned how much I appreciate you guys? :D)

When Jurgen comes to, he grunts and nods at Durgan's comment. He didn't have the energy left to respond with any gusto. Instead of immediately standing up, the sorcerer used his lower position to help him escape the range of the two orcs that were almost directly on top of him [Withdraw - No attack of opportunity from either orc].

Once he has successfully flown out of swiping range, he turns around and surveys the battlefield [At AZ/9]. Yorrick was down and, from the looks of it, it was a sheer luck that the bear was still breathing. And while that the orc-giants weren't dead yet, the battle looked to be in the Children's favor. If Jurgen could get a glimpse at what was going on in the mud cloud... "Peerimus, if you could get your elementals to lay off, Firn'gaer or I could trap that spellcaster in our own resilient sphere, so that we could get some answers from him and not worry while we deal with the retreating groups..."

While pulling out the potion he had earlier stuffed into his pocket, the sorcerer looks towards Orc #27 to make sure he was still unconscious. Then he reaches out to Shay via the empathic link, trying to assess the hawk's state... The bird would have some harsh words to say to Jurgen for his recklessness, but he would have to wait until after the battle.

Peerimus drops the scroll, Yorrick required more powerful magic than that. Touching his freind, he channels another spell. Mother I call on you to heal my friend and your son Cast Heal. Peerimus calls out to the elementals in thier own tongue that he required thier help with the opponent directly upon him. Durgan administers a healing potion to Jurgen One Hero Point for Durgan for running across the battlefront to heal a companion, incurring multiple AOOs in the process

Kit marks Orc#18 with two flaming arrows (one being lost in the elemental mud storm 66%, 49%, 10%miss), and the 'orc' stops and takes a staggering step.

Savin takes the opportunity to crush the giant's pelvis (29%hit), killing the enemy where he stands, and then bounding over to help with the last fighting giant. The monk is so quick that he is facing Orc#12 even before the other giant falls.

Kat lets another volley at Orc#12 and one penetrates the tough armored exterior, causing further problems for the 'orc'.

Jurgen flies back in a withdrawing pattern (no AOO for first 5 feet of movement. Luckily he is only in one threatened square so he CAN withdraw safely :-) ) and steadies himself in the air over the battlefield. (full round action)

Peerimus drops his scroll and Heals his faithful companion, instructing the bruin to overcome instincts and training to attack from the Prone.

Peerimus instructs his windy allies and two move to attack Orc#12, slamming him with hurricane-force winds. The third sees his targeted enemy is dead, so he merely moves up and waits for movement from the opaque sphere.

Yorrick grunts once for the unusual request, but his complete confidence in the small human overrides his instincts. The bear swipes a paw, striking Orc#12 yet again.

Kazak makes a tremendous overhand blow and does not have to make any followups. Orc#12, assaulted from all sides, finally collapses in a crashing heap!

Trace heals himself and comes to rest in the air next to the badly wounded sorcerer. Shadow also comes loping up towards the cabin.

Firn'gear sees the giant fall and intelligently holds his spell.

All the raiding party is dead or fled except for the Resiliant Sphere and the incapacitated Orc#27. Of course, with so many bodies laying around, there could be one or more who are unconcious and stabilized, but there really hasn't been time to check...

(ooc: The action is still in rounds as there is an unconquered enemy trapped in the resilient sphere of his own making, and the heroes have no knowledge of what is transpiring inside...)

"Thanks for reminding me, Kazak..." Jurgen looks over the orcs, trying to establish why the illusion hadn't warn off. He was certain that it wasn't a polymorph. Or at least, he didn't think it was. That was the thing about magic. You couldn't really be sure of much other than that it happened. "Now, if it's an illusion cast by the fellow in that sphere there, it's easily explained. Otherwise, I think we're dealing with something more sinister than a few orcs and giants."

Who ever can get ready with counter spells to help defend. If we are able to take him as pow then it is up to Peerimus to decide what to do next. I suggest questions and then off him to the taurs for some sort of trial to satify them.

ooc; I didn't see anyone accept DanKs request on Loot&Booty to post for Peerimus this week, so the druid reverts to DM control. If I'm mistaken, start posting at any time :-)

Peerimus ruffs Yorrick's hairy coat affectionately and indicates that Yorrick should attack anything coming out of the sphere. (Handle Animal: 32)

He himself stays behind Yorrick to provide further support if needed. "While on the battlefield, its your call, Trace."

It takes a second or two, but then the illusion fades and the Children of Chaos see the frost giants for what they are. (DM mistake; they should have reverted when slain). There are three frost giants in the field before the team, and two more dead by the cabin where Savin first encountered them.

And, presumably, one in the resilient sphere...

Trace orders a surrounding of the sphere to take the spellcaster prisoner.

Durgan congradulates his fallen enemies over a well-fought battle.

Savin suggests blinking into the sphere after he gets some healing.

Jurgen heals some more and looks for Shay. As soon as he does, the bird decends and lands on the sorcerer's shoulder. The familiar speaks with his master...Highlight to display spoiler: {"Could not see in lots of green."}

Kazak suggests animals and elementals look for the running parts of the raiding party, and takes position at the sphere.

Kit (and Kat) also positions herself at the sphere.

Peerimus has Yorrick move and prepare to attack anything emerging from the sphere.

Suggestions of moving into or taking down the sphere become moot when the resilient sphere comes down by itself. Scattering in all directions are three dire rats and three fiendish hawks. Firn'gear can immediately spot that there is no one invisible in the area.

When the sphere drops, Jurgen almost throws a disintegrate out of instinct. He throws a questioning glance to Firn'gaer, confirming that the lack of invisiblity. Three hawks and three rats. The sorcerer had to concede that there was something brilliant about it.

"Shay, stay with one the birds. Try to talk with them." As he spoke, the hawk took to flight again. What Jurgen did next wouldn't make Shay's attempt at communication any easier, but the sorcerer hoped to thin out the number of targets to chase before they got too far away. Today, lightning was ready on his fingertips and he let it loose for the third time in the past few minutes [Chain Lightning - As long as they're all within 30 feet, each animal is a target. Primary target being the "center-most". Primary Damage - 46 damage. Reflex Save DC 24 for half. Secondary Damage - 23 damage. Reflex Save DC 24 for half.]

He then, providing Trace doesn't pass a contradicting order, flies after another of the birds. Shay could follow one, Jurgen another and Trace, being air-born as well, could follow the third. Which left the rats... "Remember, everyone, the message spell is still active.

Savin sees the sphere come down ands the tension drains from his body. He says, "I am going to go get that orc I knocked out. Maybe he can give us some answers."

Savin jogs over towards the downed orc scanning the area for trouble as he does (spot check of 34)

When he gets to the orc, he will pick up the wand of lightning and stash it in his haversack and then pull out some rope and tie the orcs hands behind his back (use rope 18) He will stuff a gag in his mouth and tie it in place hoping to avoid any spells. He will then haul the orc over his shoulder, grunting with the weight and carry him back towards the others.

oh, a... hmmm... (ooc: no rolls needed, all fleeing animals and hidden frost giant have less than 23 hit points)

Six animals begin to disperse, but Jurgen is ready for them. One Chain Lighting spell later, and three hawks and two rats are incinerated and go back to where summoned creatures go. The third rat falls and reverts to the form of the frost giant spellcaster.

The fleeing raiders can't be tracked by sight, but the ranger and druid will have no trouble if the group wants to do that.

Savin's Orc#27 is still unconscious, stable, and the CoC prisoner.

With the use of Firn'gear's Detect Magic sight, the bodies are efficiently looted.

Ok, Savin secure the other orc, unless you think the wizard morphed into a rat or hawk just go ahead and destroy them. We will wait and see what info we can get from the fallen orc that Savin is guarding.

Jurgen, seeing that he stopped the chase before it got started, turns to Trace and shrugs. "Uh... Sorry?" A sheepish grin hits his face and he holds back a laugh. He didn't want to give Peerimus a reason to scowl. Jurgen leaves the loot collecting to the rest of the group, for the moment. He needed a moment to think about what he wanted to say to the Children. And besides, there was something that he wanted to do first.

The sorcerer turns around and heads towards what remained of the house he had just exited. On his way, he sorts through his money purse and puts 1,500 gold into it's own bag. When he reaches where the wall used to be, he does a comical fake knock and glances over the family.

"In case you didn't catch it earlier, I'm Jurgen. I think we've taken care of the immediate problem. And it looks like we'll be following the rest of them, to take care of any future threats. Which means life is back to normal for you folks." His head swivels, scanning the disarray, and he shakes his head. "Well, almost back to normal. This... is going to take some work. And money." He hands them the bag of money. "This should help."

Peerimus gives Yorrick a pat, letting the bear know he can relax. He had been ready to give chase, but it seemed there was no immediate need. The fleeing would need to be tracked, but there was no rush. It didn't seem likely that they would try to attack Heranmar now. "Trace, once we're done collecting these and we finish our business here, we should start hunting these giants and orcs. We'll identify these items and interrogate this fellow once we've eliminated the rest. Does that sound good to you?" He looks to the battle leader, getting his opinion.

When Jurgen returns from the cabin, Peerimus beckons the sorcerer over. "Jurgen, what were you trying to do? Get yourself killed? Twice you had to be rescued from the verge of death. Meanwhile, Firn'gaer's spells helped a great deal and he didn't need to put himself in a position of danger."

Savin says, "I think we need to turn this orc over to the militia for watching and then start tracking the others though I doubt they will be back. Still they seemed to have some kind of grievance against us. One of the giants seemed to want us dead for some reason. Have we ever run across frost giants before? I don't remember having done that and they sort of are memorable.

Maybe Trace and I should track them like we did before and see if they are going to stay in the area. If they make camp, I can run back to the town while Trace keeps an eye on them. That will give you a chance to question our prisoner and see what he knows. I would appreciate some healing if possible though. Peerimus do you have any cures left?"

"I wonder if there appearance has anything to do with this Great Migration we heard mentioned. [we did hear about it right?] That is one possible explanation, and we are linked to it somehow." He says. "Orcs are really the problem since they venture into this climate, but the Frost Giants are another story. Something must have directed or drove them to move on Hennimar. I must look into this migration to see if this consequence has happened before."

"Jurgen, might I suggest next time a displacement or blur spell before charging into battle or perhaps a Bulette it you feel the need to bloody yourself needlessly. Myself, I prefer the troll form. Defensive capabilities, size, strength, and no sacrifice of spellcasting."

*OUT OF COMBAT ROUNDS*

Jurgen gives the farming family a pouchful of gold and they dazedly accept. Not to be outdone in hospitality, the family begins cleaning out the cabin and making a luncheon al fresca for the Children of Chaos.

Scouring the battlefield, the Children have found one other orc warrior and one winter wolf who spontaneously stabilized from the fight. Everything else is dead.

Orc#27 wakes while the group is having the lunch prepared by the farming family, and keeps quiet and looks rather intimidated. Probably easy to get information from him...

Trace and the halfling sisters do a quick recon of the woods and notice that within a half mile the fleeing two frost giants, three winter wolves, and another group of six orcs met up and were continuing north and east. This is directly AWAY from Heranmar and other occupied areas. Trace, Kit' and Kat' return to tell the group of thier discovery and accept the farmer's hospitality.

"You're right, Firn'gaer. I should have planned ahead," Jurgen nods his head, "instead of just rushing in. Troll is a good form, although I am frequently frustrated by the fact that it doesn't give me their powerful regeneration. Troglodytes, although ugly, are also good with their natural ability to shrug off injury. They're weaker, yes, but a simple Alter Self is all I need instead of a polymorph. As for the Migration... when we get back to Heranmar, there are a few things I need to do. First off, send message that the centaurs are traveling. And then do some research into that prophesy, or more likely, hire someone to do that research for me." He sees Peerimus approaching and takes a deep breath.

"Jurgen, what were you trying to do? Get yourself killed?"

The sorcerer looks down, avoiding Peermius' eyes. He almost risks a glance up at Firn'gaer, but decides that he would have to explain himself. "I was trying-. It looked like there was trouble. First Savin, then Trace and Durgan. I know it was dangerous of me, but they got hurt. And I wanted to help them. I don't regret taking blows to protect them. I only wish that I had tried harder to do so."

Savin looks at his scared prisoner and decides to start asking him some questions, "So my tusked friend, it seems that your plan didn't go as you were expecting. Now we can do this the easy way or the hard way. The easy way is to answer my questions quickly and honestly and we keep you out of pain and alive. If we feel that you are lying or trying to cover things up, my two dwarven friends get to dull their weapons on your bones.

Tell me...Why did you come here on your raid? Who was in charge? It almost seemed personal to the giants to attack us...Why?"

Savin rolls his neck making several snapping noises and cracks his fingers with loud popping noises as he asks the questions stairing the orc down.

As Jurgen responds, Peerimus nods his head understanding. "It was a noble goal. None can argue with that. But the way you went about it..." He lets that hang, knowing that Jurgen had already learned a lesson from the battle. "Now, let's eat!"

After the meal, Peerimus thanks the family for lunch and then makes his way after Savin. He chooses to let the monk deal with the orc. Instead, he looks towards the damage the giants did. Both to the cabin and the woods around. It would take many years for the trees to heal on their own.
