A Visit to Cinnamon Valley
Jarlswolf and an Old Friend

Change of Direction (DM Cayzle)
Friday February 29th, 2008 1:39:58 PM

The group seems a little more than somewhat befuddled. But with a little hindsight, the most likely answer seems clear: The kobolds expected to be chased, laid obvious tracks to the bears' cave, killed a couple of their own and planted this fake map, and sent you all on a wild goose chase while they skee-daddled.

The map is not magic -- it is just misleading, in the most mundane way possible.

Now the trail is cold cold cold -- what chance of catching those tricksy kobolds? The group instead ponders a side trip to Cinnamon Valley, or a teleport to Plateau City, perhaps, on the way home.

Wynn expressed a desire to visit his family home. So the party takes a few days to ride to Cinnamon Valley. Coming from the West, the party enters the Valley early one morning several days later. The sky is shimmering as you ride out of the mountains. Wynn might suspect that a recent explosion from the magical volcano at the center of the Valley has spewed shiny ash into the sky.

Nearby is Witchspawn, where Wynn began his career years ago, retrieving an item for the witches of Jarlswolf.

[OOC: Folks, my DM style is to allow you all to set the pace and direction of the game. I'm not a railroad DM. If you want events to move faster, just put more actions in your post. Be direct. Don't dither and wait for the DM to feed you an obvious lead. Hope that makes sense! I'm going to go by supermajority decision, or if there are no voiced objections, I'll follow what the party leader (Angus) says.

By the way, there will be a DM post tomorrow to make five for the week.]

Angus
Friday February 29th, 2008 2:39:08 PM

Angus is pleased to see signs of civilization and he peppers Wynn with Questions "How many people live in the valley? Is the valley always been at peace? What are the major trade in the area? What is the best inn for us to stay at while you go and meet with your relatives? How do you think you Mom will like Xenia? Do you have any sister, unattached is best, but not necessary? How many days do you want to spend with your folks?" The questions go on and on.....

As the group is riding into town Angus adds "Wynn wants to spend ??? days in the Valley. We can rest up before we teleport back to Plateau City and check on the orphanage. We can show Theo, Harley and Florin the plantation. Then we are off to the Big Float to check on the apartments and Syr's business interest. At that point, maybe even I will be tired of the City and be ready for a romp in the woods or wherever our adventures may take us."

Angus scouts out the local female talent and checks the names of the inns and taverns as they enter civilization.

Syr
Friday February 29th, 2008 6:24:01 PM

Syr rubs his hands together in anticipation, "Yup, It'll be good to get back home." While in the valley, he wanders a bit aimlessly until he finds out places where building supplies are sold. Seeing a lumbermill he enters and strikes up a conversation to see if he can secure an additional supplier for Shield Construction. Disappointed with the transportation costs he leaves the mill with a handshake and pleasant farewell.

"It's beautiful, Wynn."

"Witchspawn, huh?"

"The sky. It's shimmering."

"So, how far is Magpie Crossing from here?"

Harley
Friday February 29th, 2008 10:01:30 PM

Harley enjoys the down time with his new companions. He asks Wynn about his home area and what is was like to grow up there.

Before bed Harley reminds the group to ask the scroll a question. Perhaps one on where they should travel next.

In the morning he remembers to pray for Teleport so that they can travel quicker.

Wynn
Friday February 29th, 2008 10:06:38 PM

Wynn listens patiently to the questions from Angus and the others. "I am most familiar with Jarlswolf and Magpie Crossing" he replies. The first is the seat of the Pitchfork Council that governs the valley, and the second is where my family home and business are.
While the valley is peaceful today, it has not always been so. Jarl, Royd the Merciless, a fire giant from the Scab and his brothers came to Cinnamon Valley. They simply walked into Castle Wolf, asked for an audience, killed Sorngrim the VII, the Hmost Honorable Hnand, and took over. Royd and his kin recruited a most vile army that taxed the land horribly. The Witchspawn Coven tried to overthrow him, but lost their power when Jarl ordered his two fire giant brothers, Hrolf and Magnor, to knock over their sacred stones, robbing them of much power. He burned those witches he could catch. A few still survived in secret.
Then the Dread attacked. Royd then declared that all males over the age of 14 must join the army to defend the homeland. The army, spurred on by Hrolf and Magnor, held back the Dread armies with great success. Eventually a great battle was fought near Strongwind Castle. After that the Dread seemed to turn their energies elsewhere. The dread are still out there, on our eastern border, and the lich they are said to serve continues to press them into service.
During the war, the people of Rowena, did not come to our aid their neighbor. They believe that we must have forsaken their faith, or such a horrible fate would never have come upon us. They blamed us for allowing the witches to inhabit the valley, but the witches were loyal to us and paid a heavy price by standing up to the Jarl.
It wasn't until Gareth, learned that the Dread had kidnapped his father that change came. He and his band of dragon adventurers rode into The Dreadlands and rescued the prisoners of the dread, and then they turned their wrath upon Royd and his allies. They slew the giants and set us free. It was Gareth who established the Pitchfork Council..."

Wynn continues to tell of the valley, indicating that the major items of trade are agricultural products and wood products. "My own family runs a trading company and deals in these and other products including fine metals from the surrounding lands." It was handed to me upon my father's death. I never wanted it, but someone had to make a go of it...Don't know what happened...lost our ship at sea along with a cargo that was to have saved the company..." The bard trails off as the memories of his failure flood back.

When Xenia asks how far to Magpie Crossing he replies "Better part of a day on horse, its at the far end of the valley."

Looking this way. Looking that way. The rogue catches bits and bats of Wynn's Valley History as it floats in the air about her.

"Here hwe hare at hlast, hinnamon hvalley," she murmurs, and chuckles to herself.

Only moments later, though, Xenia turns, shifting nervous in the saddle.

"Hey, Wynn. Is there some place with shops around here? I mean ... I mean, I figure if we're gonna be meeting your mother, maybe might be best if I bought some new clothes. I mean, don'cha think?"

Theodore & Macaw (See Invisibility)
Saturday March 1st, 2008 11:28:35 AM

Theodore is quite interested in Wynn's history. As they walk along, the wizard's attention is wholly on the bard.

"If you don't mind my asking, what made you decide to leave your home?" he asks him.

Angus (second illegal post)
Saturday March 1st, 2008 2:58:26 PM

Angus nods toward Wynn, impressed by the bards knowledge and history of the area and a bit wary of the blame Wynn places on himself. "Wynn are you excited to be back home? Is there anything we could do to help turn around your families fortunes, that is besides Xenia at your side."

Angus smiles a big toothy grin at Xenia and whispers to the rouge "Can't wait to watch you meet Wynn's mother. Can't wait."

Welcome Home (DM Cayzle)
Saturday March 1st, 2008 4:44:20 PM

The party rides into Jarlwolf, a town under the shadow of a medium size mountain. It is much the same as Wynn remembers, though greener, with more trees and flower gardens and shrubberies. The town is tight behind its walls, and the buildings are two or three stories high and near-set. There are many window boxes fixed to sills, and small squares with fountains and plants that seem new.

Your path takes you naturally to the Town Commons, which has been transformed into a tiny eden of fruit trees and grassy lawns.

The Adventurer's Board looks much the same, covered with job notices, and calls for hero's work. There are three people lounging nearby, clearly adventurers, a female human in armor, a male human in a fancy robe, and a male half-elf in black leathers. The woman has a nasty scar across her nose.

A young lad runs up and stops in front of you. "Hello! Hello! Madame Dulcet, head of the Pitchfork Council, would like to welcome you!"

Xenia
Saturday March 1st, 2008 9:05:01 PM

"What a friendly town! This is so nice. That's the same Pitchfork Council you was talking about, right Wynn? Guess they musta recognized you. And Florin too, huh? Otherwise we'd be getting the same reception those there standing by the notice board got. That is to say, none."

"Now a really gotta buy new clothes. I mean, if we're meeting the head of the group that runs the valley. Wanna come with?" Xenia takes Wynn's arm. "I mean, shopping?" She smiles a wheedling little smile.

The rogue gives the boy a wave.

"Hi, I'm Xenia. Does Madame Dulcet want to see us right away? Or can we have some time to clean up? We been traveling a while, and it would be nice to have a bath or sump'in."

What to wear to meet the mother of the guy who is, like, the most important thing in the world? Not to put too much pressure on this thing. There's a question what makes you understand why some folks bite their nails and such.

What to wear?

Do you really want to wear white? I mean, is that, like, too presuming? But white goes good with black. Red would be, like, too slutty. Green? No! Green with red hair and black skin! That's like a sorceress outfit! Yuk!

Stars be praised, the girl at the shop has good taste and a level head.

After looking at several things, the slim dark girl settles on a long blouse of brocade silk. Pink and lavender dragons chase each other across a fabric sky. Belted over a long black wool skirt and accented by a matching shawl, the outfit presents a look, rich and yet not too overly stated, a look that blends with the half-drow's own exotic appearance.

Jewelry accents finish the look. Pearl clips for her ears, a slim chain of gold about her dark slender neck, and a gold pinky ring with a green malachite stone.

In addition to the fancy outfit, Xenia picks up a tidy little business-like dress. A crisp white cotton blouse with a long charcoal skirt and matching waist-jacket.

(OoC: This should be the equivalent of two Courtier's outfits and 100gp in jewelry.)

Angus
Sunday March 2nd, 2008 4:26:05 PM

Angus is just enjoying watching the interplay between Xenia and Wynn and he keeps thinking, This is going to be good.

Angus looks around the town "Not a bad place. Nice neighborhood. These people have an eye for structure."

When the lad runs up, Angus give the boy a copper. "Thanks for the word lad. When do we have to see the Mistress. We have been on the road for a long time and need to get a meal and a bath before we will make proper company. Where are we to meet your Mistress?" Angus slaps at his colorful cloak and dust swirls off of it.

Angus takes his hat off as he gets off of Theo's phantom horse and gives his head a good scratching "Yes a bath would be in order." Angus nods over at the three by the message board. "Good day to you three."

Angus will look for a guardsmen and report the band of 14 ogres the group scared off the road and gauge his reaction. Angus will give the location of the confrontation to the best of his abilities.

Wynn
Sunday March 2nd, 2008 11:48:39 PM

The bard leads Xenia to Inge and Hobbs Drygoods where she might find one or two nice outfits. He points the rest of the party to the Broken Cauldron where he used to stay when visiting the town. "We'll meet you at the inn in time for supper he calls back over his shoulder."

Syr
Monday March 3rd, 2008 1:41:47 AM

Syr looks at Wynn and almost feels sorry for the guy. Shrugging his shoulders, he enters the Broken Cauldron and settles down for a drink while others go freshen up.

Xenia (2nd Illegal Post)
Monday March 3rd, 2008 9:47:53 AM

"Ooo. Look at this, Wynn. It's so soft." Xenia rubs the red velvet cloak up against her cheek. "Do you think I need a new cloak, Wynn? It's so nice, but I don't know if I need a new cloak. 'Specially one that I'm not gonna wear, like, everywhere."

The rogue frowns, torn between wants and needs.

Theodore & Macaw (See Invisibility)
Monday March 3rd, 2008 9:57:05 AM

Theodore is confused. After the invite from this Madame Dulcet, someone of obvious power in this town, Wynn and Xenia decide to skip off to shop for clothes.

Maybe it was a different environment, he thought. In Dirt City, when someone of power requested your presence, you went.

Theodore reasons that things are a bit more relaxed outside the City. He shrugs it off and follows the others to the inn. Macaw rides majestically atop the wizard's noggin.

The Witch's Hospitality (DM Cayzle)
Monday March 3rd, 2008 4:02:25 PM

Upon receiving the invitation to meet with Madame Dulcet -- and after the messenger says that dinner tonite was what Dulcet said to say -- the party flies into action! New clothes are bought (with a big boost to the local economy). A report is made to the town guard about the ogres (though granted, that was a week's ride away). Refreshments are enjoyed. The party settles in at a tavern that lets rooms.

In the evening, it is a cleaner and prettier group that walks to Dulcet's Manor for a supper meal.

A servant opens the door and bows as you enter. The home speaks of comfort and means, but not of bragging wealth. The Witch enjoys showing off her special glass-roofed garden. The you are shown to a hall where there is a table set for your party and two more. The two are Councilwoman Dulcet and her aide-de-camp, a modest woman introduced as Cassandra.

Dulcet is an older woman, with a strong face. But her features are marked most strangely -- she has a set of cat's whiskers! And what's that? A cat's tail emerges from her robes!

She invites you all to be seated, greets you all most politely, and asks for your names and history. You get the idea that she already knows, or guesses, who you are, but wishes either confirmation or is just being polite.

She invites you to share any news you might have out of the east.

She asks if it is just travel that brings you here, or maybe some mission or quest. She tells you that she has a great deal of respect for the heroes of the Wold, and she is most sorry that the famous adventurers who until recently called this place home -- the Swords of Light -- have themselves left for parts unknown not long ago.

She asks if there is anything she can do for you, to aid you in your good works. She asks if you are at leave to help out in this neighborhood.

While she engages you in conversation. efficient servants bring out courses of food -- and it seems that all the specialties of the region are here to sample. Magpie Pie, Salmonberry Tea, and a range of spicy vegetable dishes. For dessert there is a superb local fudge and candies.

Angus
Monday March 3rd, 2008 5:08:52 PM

Angus is in heaven. Oh to be wine and dined again.

Angus introduces himself "I am Angus Deminoff lately of the wilds to the east, but normally of the Floating City. Our group is the Crimson Shields. We greatly appreciate the time an effort you put into this meeting."

The sorcerer eats little as is his nature, but does enjoy the wine. Angus does have seconds on the fudge as he always travels with choclate. Angus makes a mental note to pick up a few bottles of wine before leaving the town.

"Madam Dulcet your hospitality is wonderful. I could live on wine an fudge with no complaints."

When Madam Dulcet asks about the groups plans, Angus will add "We are here for our friend Wynn, who is going to catch up with his relatives before we move back to the Floating City. We do expect to spend some time in the area. What did you have in mind and we can see how it works into our arrangements, as we have an orphanage and some business interests to check on, but nothing is immediately pressing."

Angus is very interested in the cat like features of the hostess. "I have to ask about the tail and whiskers as we ran into an artifact that changed some of our number. The artifact was the Knot of Druis. Some of us were effected in very differenct ways. In fact one of our number was changed from human to a Bugbear, but he has since passed into Garguls rhelm."

Upon thinking of Lang, Angus will bow his head and get lost in thought as other speak at the table.

Xenia
Monday March 3rd, 2008 10:16:05 PM

"You have such a nice house."

"The pie is so delicious. How did you get the crust to be so flaky?"

Hohohohoho.

Xenia covers her mouth with one hand for a delicate and ladylike laugh.

"Oh, Angus. You are so very droll. Leave it to you not only to notice a lady's tail, but to bring it up in conversation." Hohohohoho.

"I do love cats, though. There's something so elegant about them. Don't you think Belkior? The look flatters you Madame Dulcet."

"By the by, do you happen to know a dwarf by the name of Bralin Stoneminder? He once walked with us in justice in Floating City, and we were hoping to see him once again."

Belkior
Monday March 3rd, 2008 10:30:41 PM

The halfling cleric mutters a quiet prayer of thanks to Alemi, mindful that his hostess may venerate a different God or power. Belkior enjoys the vegetable dishes even though they are spicier than he normally eats. Still, it is best to be polite and he certainly does enjoy the sweets.

When Angus mentions the feline features of their hostess, Belkior will listen intently as the conversation turns to the Knot of Drusis. When Xenia asks, Belkior will stand and show his legs to Madame Dulcet.

"I think that this is what Xenia is hinting about. I was only partially changed by the Knot."

Wynn
Monday March 3rd, 2008 10:58:53 PM

The bard looks about the store, as the drow-girl makes her selections. Running a hand over the red fabric, he judges the quality, and finds it lacking. When the shopkeeper has his back turned, Wynn shakes his head, nixing the purchase. Wynn wonders if any of the dry goods in the shop had come from Brightsong Trading, but he does not ask.

Before the meeting with the witch, Wynn dons his magical hat. His untrimmed hair now shoulder length, is pulled back in a queue, the gills behind his ears hidden by the high old-fashioned collar of his navy blue jacket. A double row of silver buttons down the front, taper from top to bottom, accenting his frame. Close fitting dark breaches tuck into dark leather boots. The leather of belt and scabbard gleam softly from recent polishing, and keep the half-elf's longsword close at hand.

Wynn lets the others talk and ask their questions. He will greet Cassandra warmly, and enquire after her adventures since they last parted. In a low voice he will ask after her gardening, adding, "surely as the Fey King has seen fit to bring both chaos and blessings, you and the coven have found a way to benefit from his influence on all things natural?"

When Xenia asks about Bralin, Wynn grows attentive. His eyes on a glass of wine held in his hand do not betray his thoughts as he listens to the conversation.

If there is an opportunity to speak quietly with their host, he will ask, with some trepidation, "what news of Magpie Crossing? Is there much to tell?"

Theodore & Macaw (see invisibility)
Tuesday March 4th, 2008 9:27:12 AM

Theodore is mindful of his manners while in Dulcet's home. Although his eyes do linger a bit too long on the hostess' whiskers and swishing tail.

Macaw spies the tail, too. Seeing a game in the making, the bird hops into the air to pursue. Theodore quickly catches the raven, sensing his impending mischief.

"No sir!" With both hands wrapped firmly around the struggling familiar, he marches back to the manor's entrance door and flings the raven outside, shutting the door behind him. "Not this time."

He takes a seat, cooing over the extravagant dinner. "Very nice. Thank you, Madame Dulcet."

When questioned about himself, Theodore responds openly, "My name is Theodore. I'm originally from Dirt City, but I've been studying in Plateau City for the past few years. And now I'm here!" He smiles.

Harley tidies himself up as best as he can before heading off with the group to the councilwoman Dulcet's house. He listens politely as greetings are done. When it is his turn he steps forward.

"My name is Harley. Up until recently I was traveling the Wold learning about its Gods. That is, until a few of us here ran into a little trouble with some kobolds and an evil cleric. My new companions rid the Wold of cleric and we have joined forces in seeking the Kobolds. It appears they may have given us the slip and there ruse has led us here.

Harley then steps back and lets someone else speak.

Xenia (2nd Illegal Post)
Tuesday March 4th, 2008 2:07:04 PM

"Dirt City! I'm from Dirt City!" Dressed in her elegant outfit, the rogue blurts the words out through a mouthful of food. "Well, not for a while, but that's where I'm from!"

"Oh ... "

With a sheepish look, Xenia swallows, then corrects her posture.

"That's ... That is so interesting, Theodore. Do you by chance know Marcus Merryman and his significant other Sliver? They would be my adopted father and mother."

"Papa worked as a ... broker. He specialized in difficult to move items."

Theodore (2nd Post)
Tuesday March 4th, 2008 3:05:04 PM

Theodore visibly brightens when Xenia admits to also being from the City. "That's wonderful!" he exclaims. He takes a sip of water to wash the crumbs from his mouth.

Sitting in the Inn, the monk wonders what the big deal is with meeting the council woman and why others in the group feel the need to dress up for it. Confident in his own body, he refuses to dress up and wears hs regular clothes. He nudges Harley, "It's just not me. Take me as I am, not as someone prefers to see me."

Once Angus mentions the host's obvious animal characteristics, his eyes are drawn to Belkior's legs wondering if their hostess will notice anything unusual and comment on them. His mind wanders for a second on what other animal changes could have been forced upon him by the Knot.

Later, he introduces himself simply as "Syrdeth Redbow and although eager to return to the Float, we are always willing to hear someone that might need assistance, especially since the Swords are no longer able to fill that void for you." The elf stops to take a deep breath as if having said too much already.

Bookkeeping with Cayzle
Tuesday March 4th, 2008 7:42:47 PM

First off, remind me who the ADM is! Whoever it is, how about some posting reports?

Second, I am told that if you do not have a PC sheet on Googledocs, you CANNOT enter combat. Here is how to do it:

http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dftkpx9b_9gcdzhb

So far Belkior, Theo, Angus, Xenia, Harley, and Wynn are all A-OK. That leaves Syr as the last hold-out, I believe.

Also, those who have done the Googledoc thing, PLEASE do post your link at least once a week. Wynn's last link was back int he middle of Feb!

Thanks!

News and More (DM Cayzle)
Tuesday March 4th, 2008 8:06:53 PM

After you are all introduced, Dulcet asks if Wynn is related to the Brightsongs formerly of Cinnamon Valley. After confirmation, she will say that she has a vague recollection of Wynn, and apologies for her faulty memory. She draws an analogy that chasing down her stray memories is like catching mice. They scurry around so.

She will say that the family business did not do well, and that the last that she heard, Wynn's family, led by his mother, had moved the clan to Osto, following a business opportunity there.

The witch does not seem to mind being asked about her feline characteristics, but neither is she forthcoming. "Oh, just a slight affliction," she says of it all. "And I'm getting better."

She listens carefully to the stories of transmutations, and asks Belkior where this "Knot" can be found. She has her assistant take notes.

Her ears prick up -- literally -- when Xenia mentions Bralin. "Oh yes, he is here, and thank goodness. He has been running around doing the work of three heroes, bless him. You will find him, no doubt, at the temple of Alemi here in town."

It seems just as well that Theo set his bird outside. Did Dulcet lick her lips as she watched the raven? Nah, couldn't have been.

She engages in pleasant conversation for the rest of the meal, trying to draw Harley and Syr out. She is quite charming.

After the meal, there is tea in her cozy parlor. And afterwards, there is even time to stop by the Temple of Alemi before going to bed. In fact, Dulcet advises you to stop by at this late-ish hour, since Bralin has been out working until into the evening lately, and you are most likely to catch him at dinner.

Xenia
Tuesday March 4th, 2008 9:21:51 PM

Xenia's face drops into a dark cloud. Through the rest of the mean she becomes sullen and uncommunicative.

So, why shouldn't I say? Like, I'm ashamed of my Da or sump'in? And why should I be? It's not like he's doing nothing wrong. Folks got stuff. They need to move the stuff. It's filling a need. Folks got needs!

The rogue growls under her breath.

And why is it that other folks should be looking down on it? Acting like they're so much better 'n everyone else. Dressing better and talking better. Like they're so smelling-like-roses pure and all? Everyone's got little dirty stuff. If you don't got dirty hands, you ain't working.

Tea goes by and the rogue barely notices. Comes time to leave and Xenia slings on her shawl with an angry flip.

"It's Keys!" she says quite emphatically and quite also out of the blue. "It's House of Keys. There, you satisfied?" And she stalks out of the house.

Wynn
Tuesday March 4th, 2008 11:17:58 PM

"Osto!" blurts the bard, then more quietly, almost a whisper, "Osto."

The family business did not do well...

He had let his family down. His failed venture had been the nail in the coffin. So his mother had left Magpie Crossing and gone to Osto.

Lost in his own unhappy thoughts, Wynn does not notice Xenia's unhappiness.

Belkior
Tuesday March 4th, 2008 11:25:41 PM

The halfling cleric doesn't understand much of the conversation between Xenia and the new fellow, Theodore, but he can tell that she is upset. Belkior is more focussed on answering Dulcet's question.

"Ahh ... anyone remember where that druid went? I don't really remember, to be honest. It was during the time of the Fey King and I was rather busy with other things."

Belkior stands and checks his equipment. He is clearly prepared to seek out Bralin and whoever else is at the temple.

"Who else wants to go to the Temple of Alemi? I want to pray and pay my respects, and also say hello to Bralin."

After waiting for the others to respond, Belkior will begin walking in the indicated direction to reach the Temple.

Friends, sometimes my very poor brain just refuses to connect the dots.

Both Justin Webber and his brother Jim are having major problems getting online. So they are on indefinite walkabout from the Wold. The thing is, I knew this because I am subbing for Jim for his PC Gilan in the Bloodpack! I'm an idiot! Does Xenia know *what* Osto is given her origins in Dirt City. Specific history or geographic location would not necessarily be included. Knowledge Local takes in the rival nature of the two cities.

Angus
Wednesday March 5th, 2008 9:46:07 AM

Angus watches Wynn's reaction to the news of his family and is distress, but holds his questions for now.

Angus is pleased to hear about Bralin and is looking forward to seeing him again. "Yes we should look in on our old friend, Bralin. Belkior we can go over to the temple of Alemi after tea and look up Bralin and you can make other contacts if necessary."

Once the group leaves the tea and heads out Angus will go over to Wynn "I am sure Osto is not far. We can go to Osto and visit your family and maybe lend a hand for awhile before moving off to Plateau City." Angus puts a reassuring hand on Wynn shoulder.

Theodore (see invisibility)
Wednesday March 5th, 2008 9:47:37 AM

When Xenia does not immediately answer Theodore's question, he gets the sense that he might have touched on a tender topic. He doesn't press it.

He finds that he rather prefers Madame Dulcet's food to words in his mouth. Theodore doesn't feel too forward in helping himself to seconds. Afterwards, he offers his gratitude to Madame Dulcet.

As they are leaving, Xenia emphatically answers Theodore's question, leaving the wizard wide-eyed, frozen in place, and wondering just what the heck was wrong. In Dirt City, her father's position was quite honorable and lucrative. Nothing to be ashamed of, at all.

As Xenia exits the manor, she might notice Macaw perched in a tree and watching her. Or she might not. Either way, the bird seems to be quite interested in her particular mood, tilting his head this way and that to get a better look at her.

Theodore follows, shortly. He approaches the half-elf. "I'm friends with Jeraldh," he says, softly. "The Keys' leader. In fact, I supported him for the next Prince."

The young mage seems inexperienced with consoling people. He turns away from Xenia and looks at the early evening stars. "I grew up in the City. I love it very much. But you don't get to see the sky like you do most everywhere else. You know, with all the dirt floating about and such. Um..."

Theodore sighs as Macaw flutters down to take his usual place on the wizard's head. Having nothing else to say, he shakes his head, shuts his mouth, and waits for the others to join them.

Xenia (3rd Illegal Post)  d20+22=34
Wednesday March 5th, 2008 10:47:30 AM

The night is always so beautiful, lit up under the stars. Like a fresh sea breeze, it clears the red fog of ill humor with its gentle hand.

The slim rogue sighs.

"Jeraldh, huh?" Her green eyes stare far off into an unseen distance. "It's been so long. You know, I wrote a few times in the beginning. But since the city got destroyed ... "

"You know, I almost kinda lost what it feels like, Theo. Out here, outside of Dirty City, folks don't see things the same. What's a good, honor-like profession in Dirty City, they see out here as wrong. I gave up a long time ago trying to make folks see, you know?"

"You mean that Prionel guy, Belkie?" Xenia turns from the conversation to her catling companion. "The head guy from the Elf Tree Town? I thought Happy said that those Children of Chaos guys rescued him from Lord Perimon. Sent him back to the Crying Woods or sump'in."

"You coming with us, Theo? To the Temple of Alemi? You can meet Bralin. And you can tell me what's been going on in Dirt City. I should write my Ma and Da again."

Xenia glances in Wynn's direction, thoughts of Osto in her head.

"So, Theo, what's this you're saying about a New Prince and such? You know, sure looks like your bird is staring at me." (Spot 34)

Bralin Stoneminder
Wednesday March 5th, 2008 11:22:37 AM

The Temple of Alemi is a smallish, unimposing building within a few minutes walk of Dulcet's manor. The plain double doors open up into a common area, well lit by several permanent lights affixed to the ceiling. Tables and benches align the right side of the area, a place for the priests and others to sit and take meals.

A lone figure, short and squat, sits at the table in the far corner. His back is against the stone wall, giving him a good view of all points of entry into the room. The dwarf wears dull black platemail. His helm sits on the table to the left of his plate, a very large axe sits on the table to the right side. A shield, with a black cover bearing the blue emblem of the WLA, rests against the wall - within easy reach.

The dwarf's deep set eyes immediately fix on the entering party, although his hands never stop shoving meat and bread into his mouth.

It takes several moments for recognition to appear in the dwarf's face. The feeding stops, and Bralin rises with a careworn smile.
"Xenia! Syr! ... and Angus!"
The black bearded warrior comes around the table and approaches with an offered hand.
"Well met! Well met indeed!"

Bralin leads the group back to his table, where he immediately sits and recommences eating like a starved man.
"How fare ye?" he somehow asks between bites.

The dwarf himself looks haggard, overworked, and seriously tired. Which, for those familiar with his constitution, is saying something.

Angus
Wednesday March 5th, 2008 8:05:09 PM

Angus claps his hands together when he spots Bralin "It is you. It has been too long old friend."

Angus strides over to Bralin and extends his thin arm to shake hands and then quickly bends down to hug his stout friend.

"Have you been well Bralin? It looks like you are doing fine, having a temple of all your own."

Angus breaks out his last two bottles of wine. "We must all sit and swap stories. What a great chance meeting we have. You would have loved our last adventure. We are just passing through to Osto right now. You know, Xenia needs to meet Wynn's Mom and all."

Angus's thoughts are eveywhere and he rambles on "We moved the orphanage to a plantation outside of Plateau City after the Big Float got attacked by the plant monsters."

Angus goes on and on and on.

The Temple of Alemi (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday March 5th, 2008 8:07:14 PM

It is common knowledge that Osto is reknowned for its corruption and influence-peddling. In Dirt City, at least the dirt is out in the open. In Osto, the dirty dealings are hidden. Therefore, there ARE plenty of aboveboard businesses in Osto, some serving as fronts, others as beards. A range of conclusions could be drawn about the Brightsong family move there.

Belkior leads the group to the Temple of Alemi, and there all thoughts of rogues and thieves seems out of place.

Bralin, your old friend, stands to greet you.

Xenia
Wednesday March 5th, 2008 8:14:47 PM

"Bralin!"

Xenia throws her skinny arms around the dwarf's neck for a big hug. "We've missed you."

"I was sorry that you had to go," she whispers, "but if you hadn't I woulda never met Wynn. Thank you," she places a kiss on his cheek. "It's the best thing every happened to me."

Then she steps back to take a place next to Wynn's side, handsome and dignified in his blue jacket with the silver buttons.

The bard goes over to Bralin and offers him his hand in formal greeting.

"Good day Bralin Stoneminder of the Clan Corregan. It is good to see you again. I trust you are well. I am pleased to assure you that I have kept your families pledge with honor. Were you able to speak with my mother before she left the valley? Did you pass to her the trinket I entrusted you with?"

The bard waits anxiously for the dwarf's reply.

Syr
Wednesday March 5th, 2008 10:18:57 PM

Syr's ever present grin widens as he spies the dwarf. "Bah, temple life is making you soft! Look at ya, even stuffing your face when we show up." He embraces the short figure and a sudden thought occurs to him. "Hey, Florin disappeared for a bit, I'm sure that Angus won't mind if I invite you to to wander with us until his return?"

Barely pausing for a breath the monk continues, "Anyway, how have you been?" His face hardens briefly, "We lost Lang just a bit ago but other than that just a few minor changes and a few new faces. These new ones are Harley, Theo, and did you meet Belkior?"

His mouth continues without stopping as the elf's obvious youth seems to be winning the war with his brain, "As for me? well... I'm not saying that I discovered religion since you left us but I have found some small use of it." He smiles warmly at the dwarf.

Belkior
Wednesday March 5th, 2008 11:00:48 PM

The halfling cleric steps forward, extending a small hand in greeting towards the dwarf.

"No, I don't believe that we met. But I have heard a lot about you, Bralin Stoneminder. I hope that I have successfully followed in your path. Are you the only priest following Alemi in these parts?"

Belkior tries to examine the temple without being too obvious about it. Alemite temples tend to be very particular about the arrangement of worship areas and the hospitals attached to them. Not to mention the workshop areas.

"I have some small skill in healing. Are there any here who might need assistance?"

Bralin
Thursday March 6th, 2008 8:47:18 AM

Bralin returns Xenia's hug without embarrassment. The rogue will note he's pretty dirty.

Upon hearing the various comments on his temple and priesthood, the dwarf bursts out in laughter, and spends the next several minutes choking on the mouthful of food he was eating at the time. Eventually fighting down the biteful, he looks up beaming with delight.

"Nay, nay," he chuckles, pointing toward a back door. "Veranth of Alemi runs this temple. I remain a warrior, with the Woldian League. The company has been called away, leaving this valley in my charge."

Bralin sighs heavily.
"Tis more difficult than anticipated. Veranth has offered food and bed while I am here." Looking at Belkior, he nods again toward the door. "You will find him in the kitchen. I know not his needs."

To Syr - "I must remain here. I am sole protector of the Valley, and rumor and mystery abound."

To Wynn - "Aye. I fulfilled my pledge. Her spirits soared upon learning you live. She now possesses your bona fides."

Theodore & Macaw (see invisibility)
Thursday March 6th, 2008 9:42:46 AM

Theodore shrugs. "Dirt City is Dirt City," he says. "It's like a cat apologizing for chasing mice. You can't help where you're from, so you might as well be proud of it."

An goofy smile appears on the wizard's face as he walks along. "In fact, I think we have an advantage others don't. The way I look at it, Dirt City's a rather progressive sort of town. Very accepting of not only race and sex, but way of life. And the City has a strong code of honor, if a bit different than other places'."

"I'm sorry about Macaw. He's very nosy. I hope he doesn't bother you too much."

"Oh, yeah. The City was attacked, actually," he responds to Xenia's request for news. "We managed to repulse the attack. In the process, Liam Kent was elected the new Prince. He was the head of the Dirt City chapter of the League of Adventurers. I would have preferred Jeraldh as Prince, myself, but things didn't work out that way."

At the temple, Theodore steps forward to meet Bralin after Syr introduces them. "Hello."

After that, he sits down and watches the old friends catch up.

Macaw seems to have fallen asleep. He has bedded down on Theodore's head.

Brother Veranth (DM Cayzle)
Thursday March 6th, 2008 4:39:03 PM

A priest in simple vestments enters the room. "Oh my! Oh my!" he exclaims softly. "What a foofoorah at this late hour."

"But I see that we have a meeting of old friends. Please sit down and let me bring you some refreshment."

Veranth runs a hand over his balding head as he rustles up some wine and bread. "I hope you will not mind this humble fare," he says.

He joins the conversation and tells you a little of events in the area lately.

There is an infirmary associated with the chapel. Until very recently, it was busy with recovering Ga'alites -- people who were for the most part secret worshippers, but who were revealed when their heartseeds died.

Veranth says that he tried to convince them to turn to Alemi, but they were having none of it. "A few thought it was some kind of test. Most thought that Ga'al had died. They were pretty despondent, and angry."

He also has been busy treating glitterlung cases. The valley's famous volcano has been active of late, and some people were caught out in ashstorms without scarves. He warns you to take care as you pass through the valley.

Belkior offers his help, and the priest nods. "Sure, with thanks! There is always healing to be done. Althoguh I am worried more about a report of missing children from a farm family outside Merrydale, to the south, near the volcano.

But he does not ask for help, per se. He says that he can probably get Sherrol's crew to check it out. Or maybe Bralin will have a chance.

[Bralin knows that Sherrol is a local adventurer, proud and full of herself, not as powerful as the Crimson Shields, but of middling level and able to stand up in a fight.]

Belkior
Thursday March 6th, 2008 11:08:32 PM

The halfling cleric perks up when Veranth mentions the missing children.

"What's this? Missing children? Any idea what may have occurred?"

Even though Belkior had hoped to be able to work on some enchantments, the thought of children being lost and possibly injured nags at him.

Angus
Friday March 7th, 2008 8:23:47 AM

Angus is just so happy to see Bralin "So good fellow are you tied down to the area or can you travel with us for a little while or a long one. We should show you the new orphanage we set up after the one in the Floating city was burned down by the Anvil Heart Gang. The new orphanage is outside of Plateau City."

Angus listens to the busy priest as well. "A volcano! Wynn is your familiy far enough away to be out of danger in Osto?"

Upon hearing about the mising children "Crimson Shields, I think we have to investigate the fate of thses children. Is this farmstead you speak of on the way to Osto?"

Angus considers the case and then asks "Master Vernath, do we need any other precuations besides face scarfs if we investigate the missing children. Your volcano is not going to spout lava any time soon is it?"

Angus looks to all the Shields and Bralin "Is everyone up for s side investigation before we get to Osto? This is if the delay will not cause Wynn undue problems."

Angus waits for Wynn to answer and is anzious to see if Bralin will accompany the group as well.

Xenia

Xenia brushes at a small bit of dirt on her new silk blouse. Thank the stars for the cleaning wand.

Bralin
Friday March 7th, 2008 1:41:26 PM

Bralin shakes his head at Angus.
"Osto is far to the northwest, in Fargunia. Merrydale is just south of here."

In answer to both Syr and Angus, he replies, "Nay. Should you seek the children, I will lead Sherrol and her company to Boydos."

As an aside to Veranth, he growls, "I trust not these Ga'alites."

Looking back at Syr, "you at Merrydale and me at Boydos addresses our most pressing needs."

Syr nods at Belkior, "Seems simple enough don't you think? Just a short delay for the kids seems called for. Sounds like a plan Angus, set off at first light? Is it far, I'd much rather walk than ride the sorcerous steeds?" As the others retire, he sits down next to Bralin and catches up on what has been happening to the dwarf.

The bard greets Bralin's reply that his mother does not needlessly grieve with relief. "Thank you. I am glad she knows me to be well. As for Osto, I know nothing first hand of the place, only the little that has been told to me by travellers "[Bardic knowledge = nat 1]

"So Merrydale it is then" Wynn acknowledges Bralin's reasoning. "I would not trust the Ga'alians either for we have recently encountered them some 10 days from here where we defeated a senior cleric of Ga'al in battle. Syr ripped out the heart seed from his chest. We think this may have something to do with the withered heart seeds in others, but we cannot be sure."

Xenia

Xenia's face is cast in a look, dark and deeply thoughtful. It's her Worried Look for those who know her, and it builds and grows until the rogue herself puts the kibosh on it with a small nod of determination.

"Well, I know a little sump'in about Osto," the rogue mutters a determined little mutter. "Everyone from Dirt City knows it, huh Theo. It's supposed to be a tough tough place."

"Hey Wynn, lemme see the Weegee Scroll. I wanna ask it a question."

"This may also tell us sump'in about the scroll too, 'cause I'm gonna try this in Common, not Dragon Language. This is sump'in we found in a dragon cave, Bralin. Same cave where we hooked up with Harley and Theo. Florin was there too." She spreads the scroll out upon a table and wets the end of a quill with a lick of her pink tongue before dipping it into a well.

"Hmm ... " Xenia considers the words before attacking the scroll. Across the page she writes her question.

Is Wynn's Ma prospering in health and business in her life in Osto?

Harley

Scrolling Through Xenia's Mind (DM Cayzle)  d20=20 [Xenia makes her save!]
Saturday March 8th, 2008 4:22:54 PM

With all the information under discussion, Belkior immediately home in on the possibility of kids in danger.

Angus is concerned about Wynn's family and asks about the volcano.

Xenia is concerned as well.

Bralin reminds you all of your geography. Merrydale is very close buy. A dozen miles by road, maybe? Osto is leagues and leagues away. Bralin suggests that the party should seek the kids, and he and Sherrol's crew can head for the Ga'alians towards the Tower of Boydos.

Theo relaxes, not having much to contribute.

Syr agrees with the plan, as does Wynn and Harley. That decides it.

But tonite, before setting out, Xenia decides to try the magic Scroll of Answers. She writes out her question on the blank sheet.

Is Wynn's Ma prospering in health and business in her life in Osto?

At first nothing much seems to happen. But in a few rounds, if Theo is awake, he will note an invisible sensor, such as that created by certain scrying spells, hovering over the scroll. The next round, Xenia feels an incredible Presence pushing at her mind, probing deep, demanding answers to certain questions: Who is Wynn? Who are you? Who is Wynn's Ma?

If Xenia can make a Will save vs a DC30, she can resist this probe. The DM chooses to roll to see if the question is moot -- a NATURAL 20! Xenia can choose to resist the probe!

The DM will await an answer from Xenia before proceeding. Will she resist the probe? Or will she let it enter and freely dig out the answers to whatever questions it may have?

She cannot choose to answer some questions but not others.

Xenia - OoC
Saturday March 8th, 2008 7:05:09 PM

Does the successful resistance of Will imply that Xenia has the power to resist invasion even while asking questions of her own in return?

Belkior

Nope, there is no communication possible. Either you let the presence dig through your mind, or you say no to everything and the effect ends.

"WAH!"

"It talked to me! It talked to me!" The skittish rogue leaps away. In an instant, she's gone. (Hide 30, Move Silently 24) In a moment, she re-appears. This time, peering out at the scroll from behind Wynn.

"It wannit to know who you were, Wynn. And it wannit to know who your Ma was too. But I didn't tell 'im. I didn't."

"We oughta go back to the Catacombs and get our money back. For a Scroll of Answers, it don't know nothing. I think we need to get some of our own answers from someone we trust."

"Can you ... can you ... can you ask, maybe, Alemi? Can you, Belkie? I mean, last one to be using that thing was an Evil Dragon. I mean, maybe, could be, that thing is Evil.

Angus watches Xenia with a concerned look on his face and mumbles "I still say sell it as we have no way how the answers will be twisted."

Getting an Early Start (DM Cayzle)
Sunday March 9th, 2008 12:33:07 PM

After a few minutes, some text appears magically on the scroll:

Answer hazy, ask again later.

==========

The party has set on a course of action, and bids their old friend Bralin good-night.

Bright and early the next morning, you set off for Merrydale. Wynn knows the way, and even if he did not, the signpost at the intersection at the heart of the town gives it away.

By late morning, the party has reached the Pillar of Cnut, and the road divides. The sole standing pillar certainly seems odd, especially since there are no other ruins or signs that an ediface might once have stood here.

A Bardic Lore or Know Local or Know History DC12 check would reveal that Highlight to display spoiler: {Legend says this pillar appeared here overnight long ago without any hand building it. Maybe it comes from the legendary Tower of Cnut, of which all that now remains (they say) are a few scattered magic stones with strange rumored powers.}

In any case, inscribed on the base of the pillar itself are these words in antique common: Let this Pillar here stand, in tribute to the glorious accomplishments of the Reknowned Cnut! But no one now knows what those accomplishments were.

Also nearby, at the intersection, there are three signs on a signpost: To Jarlswolf (back in the direction from which you came), To Magpie Crossing (the branch tot he left), and To Merrydale (the branch to the right).

Straight ahead (and then to the left once you continue on towards Merrydale) you see a volcano rising from the valley floor -- the famous Glitterox Mountain.

"Yeah. Right. Sure. Ask again later. Not me. You're not getting me."

The scroll remains where it is. Xenia will have nothing more to do with it.

The next day, Xenia folds her new clothes with care. She runs the tip of a finger over one of the dragon patterns. Something Wynn's mother may never see.

Rescuing children again. Going off to rescue more children.

"Come back to us once you've learned to protect your own." Her Da's words. "Don't look that way. I know you'll be back some day, Little Xenia."

"But what happens when everybody becomes your own, Da? What happens then? How do you protect everybody? What sorta life do you have for yourself, Da?"

Xenia places the neatly folded rectangles of clothing into her magic haversack. Off to rescue more kids.

"Alas poor Cnut. I knew you well." (Knowledge Local 20)

Xenia shrugs.

"Anybody remember to get a name or sump'in? Someone we should talk to in Merrydale? Place the kids were last seen? Names? Descriptions? How many kids there were?"

"Or do we just go to Merrydale and expect stuff to happen?"

Angus
Sunday March 9th, 2008 7:24:57 PM

Angus smacks his forehead when Angus asks about a name or something "Just great, well if you can not think with your head you have to think with your feet. Maybe Harley or Theo can teleport back and ask. Can't just go bumbling in and ask, missing any kids recently. We can but we may be suspect at the same time. We will have to handle this gently."

Angus does snicker a bit at the scroll. "We sell it or use it for kindling. We may get a good meal out of what it will fetch, but no more."

Angus looks around "Is everyone ready to go to Merrydale? Well lets go." Angus is resinded to more walking on his poor aching feet.

Syr
Sunday March 9th, 2008 11:35:52 PM

Concerned for Xenia, he watches with dismay as she darts around. After checking on the rogue, "That scroll might not be evil but whatever is behind it could be. IF we do use it again, I say we restrain whoever does it? Also, how about less personal questions... like who is Cnut or maybe what kind of magic is in this wand? I'm just saying let's not give up on it yet. We already beat the owner, we should be cautious but not scared of the parchment."

The elf shrugs his shoulders and turns to walk down the road, "Someone in Merrydale will be able to tell us. If we were on the Float, I could see where people might not know, but this small town? I'm betting everyone knows what the status of the children is... Angus, time for that silver tongue of yours sprinkled liberally with Bralin's name. They do know Bralin and that priest... Theodore watches through slitted eyes as Xenia writes her question on the scroll. When he notices the sensor above the scroll, he sits up and squints for a better look. "What's that?"

After Xenia has calmed, Theodore takes another look at the scroll. (Spellcraft 30, Knowledge Arcana 29)

"I know a spell that might tell us more about the scroll. Perhaps you've heard of it Angus? It's called Analyze Dweomer. Unfortunately, I don't have the required focus at the moment, or the money to buy it."

He rolls the scroll up and puts it in his haversack. "I'll hold onto this until I can properly detect what powers are at work. If you'll let me, I'll ask the scroll who we're talking with, tomorrow. Maybe that might help us figure things out."

Since Angus wanted to do without the horses the next morning, Theodore decides to walk, as well.

He seems quite content to be on the road, and easily keeps up with the others. As he prefers to watch everything but the road, he stumbles often. Sometimes over roots or holes, and sometimes over nothing at all. The wizard always manages to catch himself, though.

Macaw alternates between flying about and riding on Theodore's head. The bird seems to enjoy the road as much as the wizard.

"I think maybe it comes from the legendary Tower of Cnut, Wynn," Xenia replies. "Of which all that now remains (they say) are a few scattered magic stones with strange rumored powers."

As to the scroll, the girl rogue says not another word about it.

"Hey Birdie," she says instead. "Hey birdie, birdie, birdie. You talk don'cha? Your name's Macaw, isn't it? Wanna cracker? Say 'Hello', Macaw. Say 'Hello'."

"Wonder how much further it is to Merrydale from here?"

The halfling cleric puzzles at the signpost, although what Xenia is mentioning about Cnut sounds vaguely familiar. No matter, since Belkior is more concerned with what may be happening to the children. Syr's suggestion that they just keep travelling and have Angus ask at the next town seems pretty reasonable to the Paragon.

At the Pillar of Cnut, then to Merrydale (DM Cayzle)
Monday March 10th, 2008 11:13:29 PM

Xenia reacts with suspicion to the magic scroll. Angus does not seem to think much of it. Syr wonders about taking precautions the next time it is used. He suggests a less personal question.

Theo nervously watches the invisible Sensor that hovers above the scroll. Theo thinks that some agency was scrying on the scroll and those nearby for a short time after Xenia wrote her question. Theo thinks about ways to further analyze the scroll.

There is some question about how to investigate the tales of lost children once Merrydale is reached. Angus thinks about a quick teleport back to Jarlwolf to find out more. But you think that, as Syr says, dropping some names and asking around should suffice. Wynn agrees with that.

Harley wisely does not want to break up the party. He thinks asking about Cnut is a good idea.

Belkior agrees that the best course is to press on to Merrydale.

It does not take more than an afternoon to get there, and as the sun sets, the party arrives. Merrydale is a hamlet, evidently with a colony of halflings living here as well as humans, judging by the hobbit-holes in several embankments on one side of the town.

There is a single inn -- The Thirsty Lad, a general store, and a small shrine to Alemi, but no priest in residence. The town is surrounded by fields.

"My friends and I used to explore the Culverwood to the south of here when we were lads. Always finished with a pint here at the inn...c'mon let's go!"

Wynn grabs Xenia by the hand and makes for the inn.

Xenia  d20+7=21
Tuesday March 11th, 2008 9:18:55 AM

With a short hop-skip, Xenia matches step with Wynn, hanging both on his arm and onto the stories of his boyhood.

There's a reason that the rogue sticks mostly to a simple grape rink when in this sort of place. After no more than half of a light and wheaty sort of pale ale, the dark, skinny, red-headed girl stands in the center of the inn.

"We're the Crimson Shields!" she announces. "We been sent by the hard working and most tired Bralin Stoneminder, and by Brother Veranth of the Temple of Alemi too, to find and bring back the children you got missing here."

The rogue sways ever so slightly as she lifts the tankard of ale up into the air.

"So, who's gonna tell us about these missing children? Huh? And who's gonna tell us ... about ... we lost a paladin. He's about this high. Got a shiny sword 'n goes by the name of ... Florin ... Jadenth."

Angus
Tuesday March 11th, 2008 9:45:30 AM

Angus laugh with joy at seeing Wynn and Xenia move on ahead of the group hand in hand. "It is always good to start every adventure in a tavern. I hope they have a good wine list."

Angus follows his two excited friends into the tavern and also looks for Florin at Xenia's mention. Always disappearing that one.

Angus does not want to overwhelm the locals and waits for the answers to Xenia's questions.

Theodore & Macaw (see invisibility)
Tuesday March 11th, 2008 10:16:53 AM

Macaw is quiet for a moment as he contemplates Xenia and her request. "Worms?" he finally says. "Hello, worms? Bugs?"

"Yeah, he prefers bugs and dead things to crackers," Theodore explains to Xenia. "He's rather particular."

"This seems like a nice little place," Theodore says when they get into town. He notices the hobbit-holes and smiles. "We had a lot of halflings back in Dirt City. They're an amicable people."

Theodore follows Xenia and Wynn to the inn at a leisurely pace, taking pleasure in the sights of Merrydale.

Syr grins at Angus and raises his eyebrow when he mentions a wine list. "I hope you don't have too high expectations, I can't imagine they will have much to choose from." When the group enters the inn, he sits next to Theo and speaks quietly, "I've always wondered, you said that you could see invisible things, right? So how do you tell the difference between what's seen and normally not seen?"

Harley
Tuesday March 11th, 2008 7:55:34 PM

Harley is glad to reach the town of Merrydale. Even more so when he they spot the Thirsty Lad Inn. Trekking around in full plate armor can be quite tedious and tiring. He follow the group in and orders a drink to soothe his parched throat.

"Should we grab a bite to eat while we are in here??"

Harley takes a seat at a table and drinks his beverage.

Belkior  d20+6=24
Tuesday March 11th, 2008 8:48:45 PM

The halfling cleric heads to the shrine after a brief farewell to his companions. Belkior wants to pray and ensure that the shrine is properly cared for before he looks to his personal needs. The shrine is simple, as he expected, but clean. A fitting place, really, for Belkior to pray and meditate.

If someone should happen to come by while he is doing so, Belkior will greet them and ask directions to the village healer. Usually such a person follows Alemi and Belkior hopes to use that connection to assist the villagers and learn what he can.

Of course, if no one comes by, he will seek them out in the inn with his fellows.

Might it be possible to have a consistent time each day at which we might expect a DM post?

I thought we had one for a while there, but it's been erratic as of the past two weeks or so. Or so it's seemed.

Making merry in Merrydale (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday March 12th, 2008 7:30:29 AM

Wynn, remembering the local area, leads the party to the Thirsty Lad.

Xenia enjoys a drink, and then announces the group and its current mission to the assembled locals in the tavern.

Angus waits to see the reaction to Xenia's declaration.

Theo keeps an eye open and enjoys the pleasures of a small town.

Syr engages his friends in conversation.

Harley enjoys a drink too and asks about food.

Belkior splits from the group and attends to the small shrine. He hopes to meet someone there.

In the tavern, the small crowd of humans and halflings raise a toast to the newcomers as soon as Xenia makes her declaration. "To The Crimson Shields," the cry goes forth.

As soon as Harley mention's food, a halfling waitress brings several plates piled high with mushrooms, breads, cheeses, and sausages. There is plenty for all.

But the response to the news that the party seeks missng children is somewhat less well received. One human fellow, clearly far into drink, rises and shouts, "Oyeah! Welll, hoo asshja!" He then stumbles into the growing twilight.

The waitress clears her throat and apologizes. "Please don't judge too harshly, good adventurers. That Erick Hmecker is a drunk and a lout. But it's his clan that they say the kids have gone missing from."

She seems to not really be confident that the kids ARE missing, and if you ask her, she'll say that the Hmeckers are the ne'er-do-wells of the town, and their kids are always running wild. Probably one or two just ran off to join the Mailed Fist or fell in a hole or something. Besides, there are so many of those kids, how can you keep them straight?

At the shrine, Belkior is met around sunset by an older female halfling, who introduces herself as Saray Goncklyn. She tells him that she herself usually sweeps the place up and helps with cuts and births and broke bones and such. She seems very embarrassed to find such an honorable priest in her little shrine, and she asks Belkior if he would like to join her and her family for the evening meal.

Friends, sorry if this was not noted strongly enough. Regarding Florin, I posted on March 5:

==========

So anyway, Let us assume that Justin's PC, Florin, took an honorable exit before we got to Cinn Valley, and that he will rejoin the group when he can.

My deep apologies to Justin and to all.

Also note that I will strive to post as DM more regularly.

"WHAT!?!? YA NOT LIST'NIN'??? FRAM YOU! BRALIN STONEMINDER AXED US!!!" Ale splashes to the floor as the flame-headed rogue turns on the departing man, punctuating her none too delicate comment with her pink tongue stuck out in the man's direction.

"Ooo mushrooms. Ooo sausages."

"Hey, Wynn ... " Xenia's voice turns the coquet through her hazy veil of ale. She twirls a sausage between her thumb and forefinger. " ... sausages."

Theodore & Macaw (see invisibility)  d20+1=21
Wednesday March 12th, 2008 9:39:02 AM

Theodore furrows his brow and pushes back against the chair he sits in so that he balances only on the hind legs. "I see sort of an outline of the thing that's invisible," he tries to explain to Syr. "And then the middle parts I can kind of see through. It's all quite disconcerting, like a ghost or something. But at least it makes it harder for them to sneak up on me."

He pushes a little too far back and suddenly his feet aren't touching the ground anymore. The chair stands only on the two rear legs as Theodore windmills above, his eyes wide with terror. And then he falls backwards to crash against the floor, letting out a whooping yell as he topples.

He lies on the floor, still straddling the chair, but now flat on his back with his arms straight out to either side. The ceiling seems to boast a rather interesting architecture. Didn't these particular beams have a masterfully crafted quality?

Macaw alights on the downed Theodore's chest and begins to caw in quick succession, probably the avian equivalent to laughter. Theodore looks at his dearest friend though slitted eyes, sighs, and closes them to focus on ridding himself of the headache sure to come.

After a few minutes, Theodore rights himself and apologizes to everyone at the table. "I didn't mean to cause a ruckus. Please forgive me."

And then he watches the drunk speak bitterly to Xenia before leaving the inn. Theodore decides to follow and attempt to get more information.

"Excuse me, sir!" he calls as he exits the building. "Please, we're only trying to help. If you know anything about children being in danger, please let us assist in bringing them home safely." (Diplomacy 21, nat 20)

Wednesday March 12th, 2008 7:59:21 PM

Angus just shakes his head when he hears the patrons and Xenia's response. "It would have been wasteful to teleport back, but maybe it would have saved these....discussions."

Angus stands up and announces to all (hopeully before the drunk leaves) "We only came here to offer our assistance at the behest of our old friend Bralin Stoneminder. We have went out of our way to help. If our assistance is not required or not wanted. We have business elsewhere, but want to help. What can we do to assist or should we be on our way?"

Angus waits for his words to settle in and watches there effect.

Syr watches Xenia's display carefully trying to figure out if she's putting on a show or not. He takes a glance at her cup to see how much she has had to drink. Still confused, he nudges Wynn and whispers, "Might want to rein her in a bit before we make more of them mad at us?"

Watching Theo leave, he stands up and follows the wizard, not wanting anyone to be out without backup.

Belkior  d20+6=14
Wednesday March 12th, 2008 9:43:19 PM

The halfling cleric nods in greeting to the older halfling. When the invitation to supper is presented, Belkior cannot stop a rumbling from his stomach.

"Certainly, Goodwife Goncklyn. I would be most pleased to break bread with your family. Is your home far from here?"

Belkior will walk with the halfling woman, gazing around at the village. When they reach her abode, Belkior will allow her to enter and then follow her inside. He is trying to discreetly retrieve some of the rations and other items that he carries. Belkior knows that an extra mouth at the table can sometimes be a hardship for villagers, so he wants to contribute what he can.

As the meal preparations draw to a conclusion, Belkior will help if he can or simply chat with the other family members.

"Say, do you happen to know anything about some missing children?"

Wednesday March 12th, 2008 10:17:47 PM

Harley sits and eats the food offered to them. He listens to the group try to figure out what has happened to the children.

He is not happy when some members leave the inn and the group gets separated.

Harley will follow Theo and Belkior out of the inn. He watches where they go, but does not venture far from the front door to the inn.

What a Hmess! (DM Cayzle)
Thursday March 13th, 2008 10:11:49 AM

The drunkard from the Hmecker clan shouts at the party, and turns to go. Angus more clearly explains the party's mission and appeals to reason. Xenia, herself a little more than somewhat into drink, shouts back at the drunk, but that does not keep him in the tavern. Theo goes after him, followed by Syr and Harley, who want to make sure the mage does not get in trouble alone.

Outside the inn, Theo tries to reason with the drunk fellow -- Erik, the waitress called him. But Erik does not seem to appreciate Theo's kind words. "Wee cn look out! We caan look out forr are uwn!" he slurrs. "Mind yerr awn beezwicks!"

Then Erik sees Harley and Syr behind Theo. Alarmed, he starts running, then falls flat on the street. He lays still -- drunk and unconscious, most likely.

Back inside, the innkeeper comes over to the party's table. The man nods in appreciation. "We know Bralin, sure, and we appreciate you noble folks coming to help us. Maybe you should meet with the Merrydale Council. I sit on the Council, myself, and I can send word around if you want to see us all in the morning. Name's Tem, by the way, Tem Goodbarrel." He offers his hand to Angus, Wynn, and Xenia.

Meanwhile, Belkior befriends the local midwife and eats dinner with her family. He is alert to the chance that he is imposing, but truly there is plenty of good food to go around.

After dinner, he asks Saray about the missing children. She sighs and says that it is true. Several of the Hmecker kids seem to have gone missing. She says that the Hmeckers are a poor family, and have had a hard time of it. Her husband, Yoseff, is less charitable. "Ha!" he exclaims. "Probably old Gunter just beat a couple of them harder than usual, and they run off! Not that I blame 'em. And we're better off around here short a few Hmeckers, anyhow."

The midwife chides her husband. "Hush now and don't speak ill of them what's got less than us. Count your blessings and be glad, not mean." Yoseff nods his head and is quiet.

Saray asks Belkior if he needs a place to sleep tonight, or if he has friends or a room in town. The place does seem a little crowded with kids underfoot, but Belkior gets the feeling some would be sleeping on the floor and he would get the best bed if he stays.

"Anyone seen Belkie? Are we losing a halfling too? Where'd everybody go?"

Belkior
Thursday March 13th, 2008 10:10:49 PM

The halfling cleric bids farewell, thanking the family of Saray Goncklyn for their hospitality.

"Thank you, very much. The food and the hospitality was wonderful. But my companions may be wondering where I have gotten myself to. I should go back and check with them."

"But before I go, may I extend a blessing from Alemi?"

Assuming that the Goncklyn family accepts, Belkior will intone a prayer to Alemi and cast a Bless over the household.

After the last farewells, Belkior will make his way back to the inn. As he approaches the inn, Belkior sees some of his companions picking up the fallen body of a halfling.

"What happened? Did he fall down, or did Syr hit him?"

Syr

Syr walks ahead as the other two drag the drunk back to the inn. Approaching the one who introduced himself to Angus, he asks, "Tem, is there anyone we should call to come get this guy? From the looks of things, I'm betting this happened a time or two before?"

Once Belkiot returns, the elf holds up his hands displaying the palms to the priest, "I swear, I didn't touch him. He probably just needs sleep. He's had a bit too many barley drinks, I think."

The Council of Merrydale (DM Cayzle)
Friday March 14th, 2008 11:26:07 AM

Theo and Harley drag the drunk back to the tavern. Syr stays guard. On the way, they meet Belkior.

In the Thirsty Lad, innkeeper Tem says that Erik can sleep off his drunk on the floor of the common room. "It's not the first time, nor 'twill it be the last."

Xenia is polite, and Angus as well. Angus asks about accommodations.

Tem offers lodging upstairs. He says he will gather the council and that you all can meet here at the inn after breakfast. "The inn here has room enough for all -- at least, that's what the rest of the council always says -- though I sispect the proximity to the keg is the real advantage!" He gives a wink when he says that.

The night passes without incident, and after a hearty breakfast, it is time to meet the council.

There are only four people in the council:

Simmay Swanfeathers, an elderly female halfling druid and farmer. She seems to be the leader, or at least is the most respected. She is attended by her son, Stan.

Hned Cooper, a bespectacled middle-aged man, owner of the general store.

Emery Winston, a farmer and leader of the local militia.

Tem, owner of the Thirsty Lad, who you have met.

"Welcome to Merrydale," the elderly Simmay says after introductions are made. "Please tell again about your mission. And how can we help you?"

(By the way, Erik the drunk is nowhere to be found. If you ask, he was hustled out at dawn.)

Xenia
Friday March 14th, 2008 1:37:14 PM

The following morning finds Xenia with a frown. She sits upon occasion and rubs her temples with the heels of her palms.

"Look, I hope you understand," she says from her chair in a darker corner of the room, "we come down here, 'cause we wanna help an old friend. We wanna do what's right and good. Peoples' kids are precious. If they're lost, we wanna find 'em."

"But, you know, ever since we got down here last night, we been hearing that you don't need our help. You think these kids probs are not lost. Maybe just run away or sump'in."

"So, you're the council. We figure you know the town. Which is it? You think these kids need rescue or don't? If this is just a domestic whadjiz, then I'm going home. We can't be responsible for everyone in the Wold who's got a problem."

Angus
Saturday March 15th, 2008 9:10:10 AM

Angus asks those that bring breakfast "How much to cover the room and meal?" Angus will then pay double. If told the lodgings were free, Angus will leave 5 gp.

At the council meeting, Angus opens his mouth, but Xenia speaks first and echos what Angus was thinking. "Nicely said girl." Angus nods his head to Xenia.

"If our help is required we will help, if not we are off to Plateau City today. We really do want to help, but our help needs to be wanted to find the missing children."

The Children of our Community (DM Cayzle)

Angus's generosity at the inn is noted, and Tem is more than satisfied. If you have a listen check of 25 or better, then Highlight to display spoiler: {You hear Tem say to a serving boy that these Crimson folk sure do have class.}

At the council, Xenia explains that the party wants to help, but the Crimson Shields doon't want to get mixed up in a family spat. Does anyone really care about this?

Angus is content to let Xenia speak. He and Belkior do reiterate the party's willingness to help. Wynn echoes that sentiment.

Theo and Harley listen carefully.

Simmay, the elderly druid, shakes her head. "I'm sorry that you may have heard ill of the missing children and their family." She frowns at Tem, who blushes and looks at his toes.

"But children do not just go missing around here. That is not usual or common. I know it is not a demon to slay or a princess to rescue, but if you champions could just go over there to the Hmeckers' house and find out what happened to those kids, that would be a blessing. The missing kids' names, according to the schoolmarm, are Manfrey and Catrina, who are just entering their teens, and Bab, a child of seven."

"They are our children -- the children of our community -- and it is not fair that we should abandon them."

She asks if you have any questions, and offers a guide to take you there.

And now here he was about to embark on another kid hunt. "Our quarry will be wily, no doubt. And small. That makes it harder, too."

"Tasty kids," Macaw says from atop Theodore's head, nodding his beak.

Is it possible for one of you to give us a map of the area or at least directions so that we can visit the relatives and school teacher. I thank you in advance for your assistance."

Monday March 17th, 2008 9:41:12 PM
