A Question (ADM Scott) Tuesday March 11th, 2008 7:10:27 AM
As the group moves foward a booming voice, that sounds to come from all around them, says, "Speak the word or suffer!" The group looks around but does not see anybody and they really cannot tell where the voice is coming from.
Thar ail Baerer d20+4=13 Tuesday March 11th, 2008 9:26:44 AM
Stopping at the sound of the voice, Thar says "Well, it sounds like some sort of password is required to use this monstrosity. Any ideas or ways that we can decipher what it would be, maybe by looking at the symbols or inscriptions?"
He looks at the symbols and tries to remember if he recognizes anything.
Know (planes) = 13
Edmund d20+12=21 Tuesday March 11th, 2008 5:00:53 PM
Edmund peers at the arch and pillars, looking for anything that might provide some sort of insight into the magic at work. (Know Arcana = 21)
"I wonder what the word is," Edmund mutters to himself. "Probably something stupid, like croissant. Probably in some mad language or other, too."
Sighing as he peruses the arch, he shakes his head. "Bloody hopeless. Wish I had a croissant right now. It's probably past lunch-time! If this is to be the moment of my doom, I'd hate to go on an empty stomach."
Julian Tuesday March 11th, 2008 6:45:03 PM
"Perhaps it is his name, you know the count. What was it again: Dookoo?"
Podo Tuesday March 11th, 2008 9:12:08 PM
"Julian, It was Count Dakar I believe." whispers Podo after calling Julians' attention.
Arm d20+8=16 Wednesday March 12th, 2008 6:03:22 AM
SKidding to a halt at the sound of the voice, Arm can think of SEVERAL words that he'd like to say, but he'll keep them to himself for now. Asking for the map, he looks over it and tries to determine if this is in fact the 'X'. If none of his friend's suggestions work, he will try his hand at analyzing the symbols (decipher script=16).
Kadaz Wednesday March 12th, 2008 6:43:01 AM
Kadaz tries to think of an appropriate password. "I've got nothing" he concludes. He braces himself for what's to come.
Hins, Oh No! (ADM Scott) Wednesday March 12th, 2008 7:11:52 AM
The group stops as the question is spoken and lok around and see something carved into each of hte pillars, but as anyone approaches the pillars to get close enough to read there is a screech from above. The gargoyles have come to life and are swooping down on the characters.
OOC: Okay eveyone is in tightly packed in between the pillars and the 4 gargoyles are coming from the oposites sides (all 4 directions). Sorry I do not have access to create a map so we will have to do our best without a map.
Thar ail Baerer, AC 25/26, 70/70 hp Wednesday March 12th, 2008 10:37:21 AM
Seeing that the group will be tightly packed in, Thar readies himself and casts "Magic Circle against Evil", centered on himself.
Turning to those nearest him, he says "Stay w/in 10' of me if you can, since I can cover you with this spell.

Kadaz (AC 27, 28 vs closest gargoyle, +2 AC if they're evil; HP 103/103) Wednesday March 12th, 2008 5:51:03 PM
Kadaz looks at the swooping creatures and activates his tattoo, one of strength. He grins a bit and grips his axe, looking up at the sky as he makes sure he's within Thar's spell. He also eyes the closest gargoyle and tries to anticipate its movements. "How about a bless from someone?" he asks, hoping for a bit more advantage.

Edmund (HP: 38/38, AC: 12 [14 vs. Evil]) Wednesday March 12th, 2008 7:46:11 PM
Edmund gives a cry of alarm as the gargoyles swoop towards the party, but he manages to keep his head. (OOC: I do not know if the Blessings stack [I do not think they do, but will allow it this time since I am DM'ing still, lol)
Gargoyle 1: Is struck twice by Shadow's arrows and swoops down to attack him. It misses with both claws, but hits with its bite (for 9 dmg)
Gargoyle 2: Swings down at Kadaz (Kadaz take another attack next round for this round) and misses with all of its attacks.
Gargoyle 3: Swoops down at Kirsten and misses with its claws but connects with it's bite (for 4 dmg). It however gets hit with one of Arm's attacks.
Gargoyle 4: Swoops down at Julian and misses with all of it's attacks.
The group is still fairly tightly packed, mostly to stay within the circle of protection. So that means almost everyone is within attacking distance of any of the gargoyles.

Having enriched the speed of his seven companions, Edmund makes some small assurance for himself. With some new words and gestures, these spoken at a much more normal pace, he casts yet another spell, though this one seems to have no visible effect. Those pressed close against him can feel an effect, however. It is as if a layer of air has come between Edmund and them. (Mage Armour [PH249])
Doing his best to stay in the centre of his fighting friends, Edmund knows all too well his own frailty. Raising his hands over his head to protect himself, he says to the others, "Focus your efforts. The sooner we can cut down their numbers, the better!"

Round 3 Corrections (ADM Scott) Wednesday March 19th, 2008 7:30:11 AM
OOC: Edmund sorry I did miss your Magic Missiles. Arm, I am not sure about the 4 attacks, but lets say 3.
Gargoyle 3 would have been killed by Edmunds Magic Missiles, so there is only 1 gargoyle left for round 4.
Round 4 - 1 Lone Gargoyle (ADM Scott) Wednesday March 19th, 2008 7:37:30 AM
Everyone concentrates on the lone gargoyle left and it is easily handled and falls to the ground and breaks apart. The group looks around and there are no apparent enemies, so they relax a bit.
The group will take care of any injuries, although there are not many at all except Shadow is a little slashed up.
Once the group is back to exploring the glade they notice their is some sort of writing on the pillars (it is in demonic) so who ever reads it needs to make a Knowledge of the Planes DC check of 16 to understand:
(Sorry do not know how to hide text): It feeds us, it brings life. It feeds us, it brings death. Its stain is not easily removed.

Kadaz (HP 101/103) Wednesday March 19th, 2008 4:57:06 PM
"Thanks Thar, I'm pretty good now." Kadaz cleans up a bit and pets Birdie. "Flying monsters, that's unusual, huh boy."
He looks carefully around for any more threats. After hearing the translation of the writing he looks thoughtful for a minute. "Anyone have any idea what 'it' might be? A vampire maybe?"
Julian Wednesday March 19th, 2008 6:20:28 PM
Having newly learnt to read, Julian boldly checks out the inscription on the pillar. After some confusing moments he mumbles, "What's this? This isn't what I learned to read."
Kirsten Wednesday March 19th, 2008 6:49:09 PM
The paladin, seeing that Thar has things under control with healing, moves to peer at the inscription. She can't read it of course, so she waits for the rest of the group to let her know what it says. In the meantime, she will take some time to look around the place.
Edmund Wednesday March 19th, 2008 8:18:15 PM
Unharmed, Edmund takes some time to inspect the inscription. As he knows nothing about the Planes, and has never learnt Demonic, he cannot read it at all.
"Ah this," he says with an air of haughty studiousness. "It is clearly a warning about the gargoyles. It says, 'beware the guardians' or something of that sort. No question."
Edmund squints at the letters a bit and glances sideways. "Yes. Yes, I'm pretty sure of it," he says. "Reasonably sure, that is. Fairly certain. Possibly."
Podo Thursday March 20th, 2008 12:52:27 AM
"Glad everyone's back to a healthy normal."states Podo.
Arm d20=16 Thursday March 20th, 2008 6:03:34 AM
Arm sheathes his sword and peers intently at the writing (Knowledge Planes=16). After a bit, he is able to decipher it and relates it to the group. He paces back and forth for a few minutes, then snaps his fingers and says, "How about 'BLOOD'?".
Shadow Thursday March 20th, 2008 8:23:43 AM
"Thank you Thar, I feel much better now." Shadow looks at the new pink scars that have appeared after Thar heals his wounds.
He takes a look at the script and has no knowledge of what it says, so leaves it up to the ones that know how to read it.
The Portal (ADM Scott) Thursday March 20th, 2008 8:27:27 AM
As Arm says 'Blood' out loud a gray mist starts to swirl in the middle of the black arch. It does not clear and you cannot see what is on the other side. It is a leap of faith.
(OOC: this is all I have for being the make up DM, so unless we get a DM I am not sure what do to.)
Thar ail Baerer Thursday March 20th, 2008 11:07:00 AM
Nodding at Shadow and Kadaz, Thar says "You're welcome."
When Arm says the trigger word, Thar congratulates him for the insight. As the mist congregates in the portal, Thar says "Well, I have a clear idea of what we're supposed to do now. On the other hand, where does that lead? I'm not real fond of traveling through portals that lead to unknown locales."
Podo d20+8=14 Thursday March 20th, 2008 8:23:34 PM
Podo casts Continual Flame into the Brocade bag that he takes off of his belt. Sprinkling the ruby dust into the brocade bag and he looks up to Alemi saying the words for the spell while holding one hand palm side up towards the heavens.
Once cast, the flame lights the area as well as the bag itself. Holding the bag as a flexible torch, Podo aims it into the swirling mists trying to spot anything that might be recognized.
Edmund Thursday March 20th, 2008 9:04:30 PM
((According to the PH (63), you can't use Knowledge skills unless you have trained in them. Is this rule different on the Wold?))
Edmund raises an eyebrow at Arm's translation. "I suppose you could translate it that way," he says.
As the mist swirls, Edmund frowns. "Don't like this one bit. Try throwing a rock or something through it first!"
Julian, boldly going... Thursday March 20th, 2008 10:15:39 PM
Have returned to 'normal' size Julian wonders what all the fuss is about.
"There's no courage amongst humans anymore." This halflings strides towards the swirling, and unless someone holds him back he will walk through.
Arm Friday March 21st, 2008 6:00:15 AM
Arm quickly grabs Julian by the back of his tunic, saying "Not yet, my friend..when we go, we go together.". He catches Thar's attention and nods to the impulsive halfling so he can have an eye kept on him as he searches the surrounding woods for a long stick. Once he finds one, he tentatively pokes it into the hole, holding it loosely so that if it is grabbed from the other side he will not be pulled in with it.
If this is not the case, after a bit he pulls it back and stares at the end that penetrated to see if there is anything different about it. If there is nothing, he looks at the group and says, "Well, shall we?".
OOC: Indeed, what DO we do now that our storyline is at the end? Hm...
Kadaz Friday March 21st, 2008 8:57:04 AM
"Good catch, Arm" Kadaz notes. "If we're going through let's get a marching order, just in case there's something big and nasty on the other side." He looks around on this side for any possible clue as to what may await them, but doesn't see anything.
"Ok, I'm ready and volunteer to go first. Who will come through right behind me?" Kadaz moves towards the mist. "May Domi watch over all of us" he mutters under his breath.
Thar Friday March 21st, 2008 11:16:54 AM
Nodding back at Arm, Thar moves over to Julian and stands by him, ready to nicely grab hold of his tunic if he seems ready to charge into the portal.
"Julian, how about you and I take the flank position until we get an idea of what's on the other side of the portal?" he asks with a smile.
Thar will go in the 2nd rank (assuming Julian stays near him), and backs up Kadaz.
Podo Friday March 21st, 2008 11:41:40 AM The Harbinger...
"What's Julian for ya'! Always ready to dive into danger!" says Podo. "Isn't that how we got into some of our biggest messes back in the crescent valley, eh Julian?!" asks Podo to Julian while making sure everyone else hears him as well.
Edmund Friday March 21st, 2008 3:38:24 PM
Edmund is absolutely mortified at the idea of going through the mist, which he continues to frown at.
"In the course of my studies, I have heard tell of places where the very air can boil your skin away from your body. As for jumping through portals into the unknown--especially portals guarded by evil creatures and ominous words--I am reluctant to commit myself to that line of lunacy."
Edmund shakes his head. "Until we know more, I am not going through it. And I suggest none of you do, either--that includes you, Julian! If we're going to send a guinea pig, we'll use a guinea pig, not a halfling."
"Perhaps I should summon a creature and send it through and then out? A bit dire, perhaps, but certainly a lot safer than sending our brave (but foolhardy) young friend here." Edmund glances at Julian sternly, though not angrily.
"What do you fellows think?"
Arm Monday March 24th, 2008 6:00:54 AM
For once, Arm thinks that Ed has a good point, and he wishes that his owl was still about so that he could send it through. "That sounds wise," he says to Ed, "But make it something that's agile so it can escape whatever may be on the other side.".
Kirsten Monday March 24th, 2008 10:20:47 AM
Kirsten nodded at Edmund's suggestion, "I'd rather not rush in, through that... unless we know a little more about it."
The paladin doesn't seem to excited about jumping through strange portals to potentially deadly peril.
ADM Scott Monday March 24th, 2008 12:50:21 PM
I am still waiting to hear about another DM.
Edmund Monday March 24th, 2008 7:28:12 PM
(PC page went offline earlier and ate my post. Here it is again.)
Edmund considers the various creatures he might summon before settling on something. He casts a spell--one that takes a little longer than his usual spells--and suddenly a Celestial Dog blinks into existence before him. Edmund regards the creature and feels a little dismayed that he might be sending it to certain doom. The knowledge that he can dispel the dog in case something goes agley, sending it back to its home plane, does give him some comfort.
"Now then, Cnut," Edmund says (for Cnut is the dog's name), "bit of a dicey job for you, I'm afraid. I need you to run through that mist, have a look around, and then come back. If there's danger, bark thrice. If no danger, bark once. Then, I'll send you back whence you came."
Looking at the mist once more, Edmund pauses. Then, he nods to the dog. "Off you go, then. Good luck!"
Julian Monday March 24th, 2008 8:45:52 PM
"Nice idea, Eddy - but what if Cnut doesn't bark, and doesn't come back?"
Podo Tuesday March 25th, 2008 12:07:47 AM
"Did anyone notice if the light from my continual flame flexible bag light penetrate the mist in any way?" ask Podo to the group.
Arm Tuesday March 25th, 2008 5:57:48 AM
Arm watches the dog go through the gate and wonders what it now sees on the other side.
Kadaz Tuesday March 25th, 2008 6:04:21 AM
Kadaz answers Podo. "Sorry, I wasn't looking at the your light." He looks forward at the dog goign through the gate.
Birdie looks at the dog that suddenly appeared. He then looks up at Kadaz, as if to say 'can you summon a friend for me to play with?'
Thar ail Baerer Tuesday March 25th, 2008 10:24:11 AM
Thar watches intently as the canine goes through the mist. Luckily, it returns in one piece and appears unharmed.
He waits to see what the group's next move is.
Edmund Tuesday March 25th, 2008 1:03:35 PM
"Well," Edmund says to Julian, frowning, "first off--it's Edmund, not Eddy. And secondly, if he doesn't bark and doesn't come back, we know there's trouble on the other side that--at the very least--prevents him returning."
"I never said it was going to tell us everything, but it's better than knowing nothing, don't you think?"
Julian Wednesday March 26th, 2008 12:08:38 AM
"You think too much, Ed."
Arm Wednesday March 26th, 2008 5:54:37 AM
Arm sniggers at Julian's remark and says, "Yes, it's better than nothing, EDDY..".
While he waits he looks around the country side at the scenery, what there is of it.

OOC: Thank the Woldian Gods...we have light at the end of the mists!
What about Poor Cnut??? (ACDM Nellie) Wednesday March 26th, 2008 11:30:50 PM
So...
The Celestial hound is summoned, issued his orders and dutifully heads off into the murky mists. After a couple of seconds a mournful bay is heard and then...nothing. Ominous silence.
Edmund Wednesday March 26th, 2008 11:42:56 PM
Edmund winces at the baying and shakes his head.
"I think that's more than a little in the way of bad news," he remarks miserably. "What's more, we only know that there's trouble on the other side--but not what it is. We might step through and be boiled alive. Terrifying thought!"
Edmund puts his head in his hands with frustration. "What to do, what to do, what to do?" he repeats mournfully. "There has to be something, there just has to be!"
But what it is, Edmund has no idea. No amount of brain-wracking seems to be paying off. He has one last idea.
"Try shooting your bow through it, if you like," he says. "Or stick a branch with leaves through, and then pull it back. At least that will show us what the environment beyond the mist is like. If you end up with ashes and cinders, we know better than to go through. But, if the leaves and branch are still okay, at least we know the danger is of another sort."
Julian Thursday March 27th, 2008 2:05:17 AM
Throwing his arms up Julian cries, "Oh this is painful. Why, oh why? Why can't everyone else just act? Or at least let others?"
Then, with his finger stroking his chin, in a posh voice, "I know - Let's have a quick meeting about thinking about the different ways to have ideas about what to do now!"
With a humph he throws himself on the ground. The halfling sits up, pulls his sword from its scabbard and asks, "Can I just go through yet?"
"At least we don't have Kendry singing about it."
Arm Thursday March 27th, 2008 6:02:17 AM
Frustrated at the situation AND Ed's grousing, Arm pipes up, "I've already tried the 'stick experiment'..Eddy, perhaps we should stick YOU through and see what happens...". With this, he stares meaningfully at Julian as if to say, 'you could be the next one'.
After a bit, he continues, "Well, we've come this far..let's ready our weapons and proceed.". He then pulls his rod of wonder from his belt and readies his sword with the other hand.
OOC: Nellie, thanks for coming to our aid in our time of need :)
Kadaz Thursday March 27th, 2008 7:12:50 AM
The group is getting more and more frustrated with not knowing the correct course of action. "There may not be a best answer here. But sitting here is certainly not the right thing to do. It seems unlikely that this portal is a death trap just for us given how we found that map. But there could be a strong force on the other side. We have no way to know."
Kadaz tightens his helm strap then picks up his axe and shield. "No way for us to know other than to look. I vote we head through. Anyone want to cast any spells first?"
(OOC: Thanks Nellie.)
Podo Thursday March 27th, 2008 8:05:06 AM
"How about we through a Gargoyle body through into the mist? That way we could at least tidy up and if anything, we could send a message!" states Podo.
Julian
"And as to Kendry, mind what you say, he's my cousin! When he sang, it was usually to offer us a blessing!" Podo says as he glares at Julian.
Thar ail Baerer Thursday March 27th, 2008 11:31:37 AM
(Not sure how many minutes have passed, but Thar's magic circle vs. evil spell should still be good...)
Thar adds his opinion into the debate and says "My spell's almost over and if we're going to go through, let's go in fast and hit hard. That way, we won't be sitting ducks."
He readies his short swords and hopes for the best.
Kirsten Thursday March 27th, 2008 5:01:36 PM
Kirsten nodded her head slowly at this. "I suppose we'd have to go through sooner or later, as it seems to be the only way."
The paladin retrieves her warhammer and prepares for whatever might be waiting for them on the other side.
To Boldy Go... (ACDM Nellie) Friday March 28th, 2008 12:50:29 AM
There is some conversation about whether it is best to buff up or just head on in.
OOC: If ya'll want to cast a few buff spells be my guest. I'd say about 2 each would be fair enough.
Eventually, though, it is decided to just tough it out and head through the portal. Those brave enough to do so find a very strange landscape indeed. All is dark and fuzzy, as if the entire landscape is a chalk portrait of what it should be. The air, if you can call it that, presses in around you creating a most unwelcome feeling. And then there are several flowing rivulets of bright glowing red. Leaving you with the unnerving feeling that you are definitely not in Kansas (wherever that is!) anymore.
A quick look around reveals no immediate threats...just the very strange landscape.
Julian Friday March 28th, 2008 4:20:59 AM
"See, it always ends up this way anyway... "Wait - let's talk about going through - okay let's go through anyway. "Wait - don't kill - okay now how do we dispose of this monster? "It's always the same..."
With that Julian promptly runs through, "Warm in here, isn't it?"
Arm d20+13=30 d20+7=17 Friday March 28th, 2008 5:58:52 AM
A pale look crosses the bard's face as they enter the portal and he surveys their surroundings. To Julian he says, "Yes, warm but uninviting to say the least.". He scans the area quickly for anything unusual, which isn't saying much for this place (listen=30, spot=17), to detect any signs of wild (or wilder) life. then looks to see if he can find a discernable path. Before they set off, he turns to make sure they can still see the portal behind them.
Thar d20+13=30 d20+13=14 d20+4=5 d20+5=13 Friday March 28th, 2008 9:28:59 AM
Once they cross into the new area, Thar looks around and tries to decipher where they might be and what plane (if they are on a new one) if any. He also looks at the nearby fauna and wildlife and tries to see where they might be on their original plane.
Shadow Friday March 28th, 2008 10:07:22 AM
OOC: Thanks Nellie, and I just emailed you what information I have right now (I am out of town and just got to a place to check email and internet.) When I get back on Monday I will send you the actual files I have. Thanks again.
IC: Shadow agrees with Thar, "We should just go through now. I doubt that this would lead to a trap or they would have given us the keyword and taunted us. That is there style right now it seems."
Shadow will go through to scout if the others hesitate anymore.
Edmund d20+1=5 d20+3=17 d20+12=15 Friday March 28th, 2008 12:34:38 PM
((No one ever answered me, but the PH is pretty clear in that one cannot make untrained knowledge checks. Is this rule different on the Wold? I have been following it scrupulously and am now wondering if I have been missing out on rolls I could have made.))
Edmund goes though the mist last of all--and very relunctantly, at that. Once they are on the other side, he shakes his head dolefully.
"I don't like this," he grumbles. "I don't like this one bit. And there's nothing here, anyways. Let's have a look around and get out."
Edmund looks around, trying to discern anything unusual in the strange surroundings. (Listen=5, Spot=17) Unfortunately, his sight seems blurred by the weirdness of the locale, and he cannot focus on anything in particular.
He also tries to think of anything he might have learned when studying magic which could tell him more about this place. (Know. Arcana=15)
(fyi: Edmund's Mage Armour should still be in effect for some hours, but Haste has worn off of the others.)
Kadaz d20+11=21 d20+1=13 Friday March 28th, 2008 4:09:05 PM
Kadaz has the feeling that what's on the other side of this gate may be way more dangerous than what they've encountered before. And he's not willing to endanger his best friend. He takes out of his pack a large bag of dog food. He puts it on the ground and orders Birdie "Stay." The little dog sits down on the ground and watches as the party enters the gage. Kadaz looks back just before he enters and says "Good dog." (handle animal 21)
Once on the other side he starts looking around for any threat. "Any tracks?" he asks those who can do that sort of thing. (spot 13)
Kirsten Friday March 28th, 2008 6:57:55 PM
Once through the porta, the paladin shudders faintly at the strange environment. Kirsten stays close to her companions, and looks around slowly for any sign of danger.

On the other side "Anyone know if our spells are still good?" wonders Podo aloud. Podo then proceeds to open up his newly created flexible brocade light pouch to see how far the light casts outward.

Travel the Wold, See New Places...(ACDM Nellie) Sunday March 30th, 2008 12:10:20 AM
Although there is no visible orb in the sky and the land is dark (except for the glowing red rivulets running nearby), everyone in the party can still see as if all was lit by a bright moon. Everything seems to be covered in a light mist that makes it hard to see and there is the feeling of being watched. Despite the warmth of clothes (though it is not truly hot), there is a chill that works its way to the very bones and it seems that all happiness has left you.
The terrain consists of rises and hills, some rolling, some rather craggy. Off in the distance, Arm and Thar see several craggy hills and what just might be tracks heading toward said hills. To the trained eye it looks like it might take about two days travel to reach them.
Edmund and Thar rack their brains to try and figure out where they might be, but the answer doesn't come to mind immediately.
Strangely Podo's newly formed light doesn't seem to provide much additional illumination.
OOC: Sorry, don't know offhand about the Knowledge checks. I will look into it, though. Consider both Bless and Magic Circle to be in place.
Thar d20+9=13 Sunday March 30th, 2008 2:44:56 PM
Thar look saround and says to Arm and the rest of the group, "Well, do you feel like following those tracks? I'll look at those and see if I can pick up more information"
He'll bend down and use his tracking feat to learn more about the source, age, .... of the tracks.

Kadaz Sunday March 30th, 2008 7:53:13 PM
"Yes Arm, that direction looks as promising as any. I don't see any reason to pick a different direction." Kadaz looks warily around, more than bit uneasy about the very strange surroundings.
Julian Monday March 31st, 2008 1:14:54 AM
"Good, let's go that way then."
Arm d20+13=22 d20+7=19 Monday March 31st, 2008 6:05:25 AM
Trying his best to shake off the heaviness that is emcompassing him, Arm sighs and says, "Yes, I suppose that direction is as good as any other. Let's go.". On the way, he is constantly watchful for danger. (listen=22, spot=19)

OOC: Sorry it was probably my mistake as the interim DM as to the knowledge rolls. You are probably right that there should not have been those rolls.
Kirsten Monday March 31st, 2008 9:39:06 AM
Kirsten will fall in line with the rest of the group as they move to follow those tracks. The paladin didn't stray far, unnerved by the strange place they found themselves in.
Edmund Monday March 31st, 2008 11:02:39 AM
Edmund is extremely uneasy about going ahead, tracks or not, and considers the location the very height of danger.
"I'm telling you," he repeats, "it's unnatural, that's what it is, and nothing good is going to come of it. We should get out of this awful place as soon as we can."
Nevertheless, he goes along with the rest of the group in spite of his protestations--but nothing would make him happier than to turn around at once.

Keep on Rolling? (ACDM Nellie) Monday March 31st, 2008 11:32:35 PM
Thar has absolutely no problem following the humanoid tracks toward the craggy hills. Whoever left them certainly wasn't worried about being followed, that's for sure. With no sun to mark the passage of time, it's hard to tell how long you've been traveling in the bizarre landscape, but eventually limbs begin to tire. And so the party is left with the question of whether they should press on toward the hills or hunker down and rest for what you can guess might be the "night". Either way, the group is absolutely certain that they will arrive at the hills before they need to rest again.
As the group travels, Podo thinks hard about where in the Wold they might be... and it finally hits him like a ton of bricks. (Email on the way to you Jon-Paul)
Podo d20+8=27 d20+10=12 d20+12=19 d20+5=20 d20+5=17 d20+7=13 Tuesday April 1st, 2008 2:08:42 AM Ton of Bricks As the realization of where they are hits Podo, Podo pauses stopping dead in his tracks. Pivoting, Podo says " For once I am with you on this Mister Edmund, time to go back the way we came...anyone here taking notes...is there a bard in the house?!"
"Brothers and Sister, Ladies and Gentlemen, it is time we head back to whence we came from, the "X" on the spot I believe was the entrance to this place, we were meant to find it, not to travel through it. I do not want to alarm any of you, but it is best we return post haste. If I told you where we are, it might cause us undo harm. I promise to you an oath, now as a Walker, Healer of Alemi, & Monk of Domi, I will explain as soon as we are all once again within the rolling foothills of the plateau, but you all must now return with me. It is imperative that we do so, post haste." and with a bit of determined emotion, "Please?! " Podo implores the group. (Diplomacy DC= 13)
Return, Post Haste After the long winded verbiage meant to persuade the group, Podo pivots abruptly spinning a full circle, heading back the way they came, hoping before too long he discovers the mist doorway he just came through, seemingly only moments ago.
If anyone asks him what is wrong and why it is so very important, Brother Podo only says, "Alemi is the way, the light, and the truth, he whom believes shall always have health" in a whispering voice as if afraid that someone or something might overhear him.

With a mini-revolt in full swing Kadaz is very unhappy with the change in direction. Not being the brains of the bunch, however, the dwarf fighter also turns around to walk back to the entrance. "You couldn't have thought of this a few miles back?" he asks.
Edmund Tuesday April 1st, 2008 9:26:05 AM
"I knew it," Edmund opines with the maximum amount of self-justified pomposity. "We shouldn't have come in here, and if we had all listened to me in the first place, we could have saved loads of time that would have better used on... ah... something else."
That said, Edmund hurries along at a great pace back the way they came, and does his best to be the very first one out of the gate and back into the pleasant normal world.
"Thank heavens for that," he exclaims. "That place is bad news! Something should be done about it!"
Kirsten Tuesday April 1st, 2008 9:42:24 AM
Kirsten tilts her head subtly as she listens to Podo. The paladin nods her head slowly, and mutters, "Let's leave, this place makes me nervous."
She turned with the others, then, and head back the way they came... hoping that it really was the way they came.

He reluctantly begins scouting back the way they came towards the portal, determined to know what exactly their new companion knows that he isn't sharing.

The Storm (ACDM Nellie) Wednesday April 2nd, 2008 12:30:04 AM
Spooked, Podo asks that the group retreat back from whence they came. Thar begins leading the group back in the direction of the portal. After a short distance first Podo and then Shadow notice an ominous dark cloud heading rapidly in the direction of the party. A high pitched shrieking accompanies the formation as it bears down on the Mithril order. It is quickly obvious to the party that the "storm" will definitely overtake them in just a matter of minutes, and there is precious little cover to be found.
Podo d20+7=21 d20+8=14 d20+10=30 d20+12=17 d20+5=11 d20+5=15 Wednesday April 2nd, 2008 1:09:43 AM Where are we?! As the realization of what is approaching is realized, Podo pauses and then quickly explains to the group where he believes they are..."Friends, before this ominous storm reaches us, I feel I should tell you where we all are, and perhaps what that "Cloud" is that approaches us... "Brothers and Sister, Ladies and Gentlemen, we are now standing in and experiencing what some people callwhispering...The Realms of Shadow or the Shadow Plane ..." explains Podo with great urgency.
Something wicked this way comes... "Listen closly, this is all I can recall of this place, ....The Shadow Lands is a mysterious place that leads from the lands of the living to the lands of the dead. To many, it is only place of legend. To others, a part of their very faith and existence. It connects to The Wold in such a way that the dead know how to find it as well as those priests who deal with the dead. If one were to walk its dark paths or travel its misty streams and rivulets, it would be as if one traveled a very grim place: a haunted place: for it is the place where the living mix with the dead. The Living have no shadows there The dead are only shadow. Both states of being may travel this realm, though neither can call it home
The Dead travel its rivulets and streams on the way to the River of Blood where they are rescued and delivered to the afterlife. The Living also travel its shadows and dark places looking for a route back to The wold, or perhaps searching out death, but afraid of the pain and suffering of dying.
Travelers using the Shadow Lands should beware, for Gargul allows great leniency in The Shadow Lands. Great evil as well as good is allowed to fester and prosper at its borders creating their own pocket realms and kingdoms. It is this last part, these pocket groups, that I am afraid may be coming our way as I speak these very words to you." Podo rushes through with haste. "Prepare thy selves, friends, for what comes this way!" states Podo.

Kadaz Wednesday April 2nd, 2008 8:32:33 AM
"Everybody, face that cloud, fighters to the front. And do like Arm says, keep walking backwards toward the portal. Someone, get a protection from evil running, maybe two. And maybe a new bless spell, just in case. Anybody got anything stronger to cast against an evil foe? Holy water maybe?" Kadaz mentally runs down his equipment as me moves to place himself between the cloud and those less able to sustain damage.
He puts his hand in a side pouch of his knapsack and pulls out two vials. "Here are two vials of bless weapon. They will make a weapon hit ghosty things and evil things better. I'm going to use one on my axe just before that thing gets here. Who wants the other?"
Kadaz eyes the oncoming cloud. In the seconds before the cloud hits he will activate his personal protection from evil tattoo, then activate his bulls strength tattoo, and then pour the oil of bless weapon over his axe, praying to Domi the entire time.

At Kadaz's suggestion of defence spells or something to fight the cloud with, Edmund shakes his head. "I haven't the faintest idea what to use," he laments. "I don't even know how to damage such a thing--or if my spells will even work in this awful place." Gritting his teeth, Edmund continues, "I knew we shouldn't have come in here."
For his part, Edmund makes towards the portal as fast as he can. He somehow doubts his little dagger will be of much use, and he doesn't want to cast any spells until it is absolutely necessary. Until then, he prefers to close the gap with the portal.

Soulstorm (ACDM Nellie) Thursday April 3rd, 2008 1:16:04 AM
Spells are cast and preparations are made for whatever it is to come. None of the spellcasters feel as though they are diminished in any way. (Spells function normally...at least right now...evil grin.)
There is not long to wait as soon the shrieking grows to a deafening wail. Wispy insubstantial forms sweep over the terrain and bear down on the party. Through the cacophony snippets can occasionally be made out... "Twas not my time...how can I rest?!" "I will return to bring my vengenance!" "Not until I find her again.." Twisting and writhing, the beings flood through the valley, disturbing the ever present mist to a point that visibility is non existent. And then, almost as quickly as it arrived, the "storm" is gone. The hazy mist eventually returns to its consistent gloomy state and a quick analysis shows the group is completely unharmed. To his dismay, however, Thar finds that the soulstorm (for lack of a better term) has completely obliterated not only the tracks leading to the craggy hills, but also the parties... With precious little terrain to plot his course against, he is not entirely sure that he can find his way back to the portal.
OOC: Not trying to push folks. If you truly wish to abandon the quest and move on with a different story, then I will try and accommodate ya'll. Otherwise I'm afraid it's off to the craggy mountains.

Shadow Thursday April 3rd, 2008 7:03:18 AM
Shadow shivers as the cloud approaches. He fights off the nagging feeling of running away from the unkown cloud, and is relieved when it disappears. Hearing the voices, he knows will haunt his dreams for awhile.
"I am not sure we have much choice but to move on." Shadow agrees with Arm as they can no longer follw their tracks back.
Thar ail Baerer Thursday April 3rd, 2008 1:38:22 PM
As the cloud approaches and then disappears, Thar feels very disturbed about the whole changing situation. He wasn't a big fan of running away and now it looks like they have to redo a lot of traveling. Lastly, he shivers slightly when he realizes that their path back to the old portal is gone and they will eventually have to find a new way home.
He thanks Podo for his advice and after patting him on the shouldker, reminds him to show himself some grace and not be too hard on himself for their previous retreat. "You have to do the best you can and remember that none of us are perfect. After all, maybe we are meant to go this way?"
Nodding at his companions' suggestions, he takes his place at the point position and begins leading the way back to the peaks in the distance. Looking at Shadow, he says "Want to join me up on point?"

Edmund Thursday April 3rd, 2008 10:14:11 PM
Edmund surveys the scene with great distaste.
"Well, the tracks we were following are gone, and the tracks we made are gone too. Therefore, we're in an equal position as to either going ahead or turning back--insofar as the tracks are concerned."
"But for my part, it makes no sense to stick around here groping in the dark, so to speak, in this shadow realm. This is not a good place, and I think we should do our best to find our way back as soon as possible. Who knows what other things we might find here--and who knows if we'll ever be able to get back? The farther ahead we go, the less likely we'll ever find the Wold again."
"I got into this for adventuring--not to be trapped in the Shadow World forever. Let's go back!"
Kadaz Thursday April 3rd, 2008 11:49:26 PM
"Well, that was anticlimactic" says the dwarf fighter, using the biggest word he knows. "If we're lost, we might as well be lost where we can do some good. Let's turn around, again, and head mountains to find the evil ones."
Go forward or go back?? (ACDM Nellie) Friday April 4th, 2008 12:02:58 AM
After the storm, most of the party desires to push forward into the hills, but Edmund expresses an extreme dislike for that idea. Those experience with tracking know that Edmund's is a risky proposal. Considering that it is almost impossible to locate the direction of the portal, whereas the craggy hills are still visible. There is the distinct possibility that if the party tries to backtrack now, they could be lost for days.
OOC: For the moment I'm going to assume that the party decides to head toward the hills. Otherwise, let me know and I will be glad to change things up.
Though limbs are sore and tired and nerves are shot, the group continues on through what surely would be the night were you in the Wold. After hours of grueling travel, you finally arrive at the hills. At first glance there is nothing innately threating about them...no dragons posed to roast, no mindflayers hiding behind rocks. But still, something nibbles at the brain...something not quite right about the landscape. (Spot checks please. :) )

What Lies Beyond? (ACDM Nellie) Tuesday April 8th, 2008 12:11:58 AM
The area is scouted and several folks notice that one of the shadows in the hills looks suspicious. Even from several feet away, Shadow, Arm and Thar's sharp eyes immediately determine that the shadow conceals something...more than likely a poorly disguised entrance.
Amidst some of the verbal sparring between Kadaz and Edmund, Shadow wisely suggests that they rest for the night. Camp is set, watches are posted, and although it is highly unnerving trying to sleep in the bizarre environment, fatigue finally always a fitful rest. Once more nothing untoward happens, though there is the occasional distant moaning heard that perhaps signifies a distant soulstorm.
After a few hours, everyone arises feeling much better for the rest, though still on edge. It would appear that being in the Shadow Lands just has that effect on the living.
And so...the party is left at the very doorstep to the entrance in the hills that practically begs to be explored.

Once Shadow gives the all clear sign, Podo will try to listen at the door to discover if there is anything anyone else doing the same thing has missed. Whispering, just in case, "Podo says he still has his flexible brocade light bag if they need light for exploring the hill." Podo kindly offers.

Kadaz d20+1=18 Tuesday April 8th, 2008 4:55:29 PM
Kadaz looks carefully around the weird area. "I think we need to get in and get out as quick as possible. I'm worried that staying too long in this place may start to change us somehow."
In the morning he lets those who are good at look for traps, tracks, and whatever other clue may help. He spends some time sharpening his axe, but since it's adamantium, he's just wearing a hole in the sharpening stone. After a few swipes with the axe to limber up he spit polishes his shield. As he stands ready to enter he looks carefully into the darkness to see what lies ahead. (spot 18, darkvision 60')
Kirsten Tuesday April 8th, 2008 7:29:24 PM
The paladin nods at Kadaz's words. "I think Kadaz is right, the less time we spend here the better."
In the morning, Kirsten will let the others check around for traps as she takes a moment to pray and take care of her equipment.
DM Donna's Friendly Advice Tuesday April 8th, 2008 10:10:46 PM
If the players of Arm and Shadow are without internet access, I sincerely hope that their fellow players decide amongst themselves whom shall RP for those PCs, since it will be VERY important that all your party members get to post...you never know when combat may rear its even-uglier-than-normal head here in the Shadowlands.
...have a nice day.

Julian Tuesday April 8th, 2008 11:14:33 PM
Julian readies his gear early in the morning, and has a breakfast or two. He looks around eagerly, and watches Shadow as he checks for traps. He is ready to go in.
Shadow Wednesday April 9th, 2008 9:40:41 AM
OOC: I do have internet access here in Atlanta so I will be able to post.
IC: If Shadow does not detect any traps, and his companions don't show any major concerns, he will enter the suspiscious shadow. He will have his rapier out just in case, and take a quick look around and then hopefully step back out to let the others know what is in there.

Thar will watch over Shadow as he checks out the shadowed area and ready himself to jump in if needed.
Please Explore Me! - DM Donna Wednesday April 9th, 2008 7:16:05 PM
Shadow's cautious casing of the area reveals no traps...only a gap within the side of the craggy hill that is wide enough and high enough to let one person into it at a time.
Nothing is heard from within the opening, and there are no visible signs of recent passage.
Julian Wednesday April 9th, 2008 10:46:47 PM
"In you go, Shadow, or stand aside and let me in," says Julian bravely. "Though, has anybody got a light?"
Kadaz (AC 27, HP 103) Thursday April 10th, 2008 6:11:23 AM
"Well, this is certainly a job for me." The dwarf holds his axe and shield firmly, and enters the tunnel. He trusts his darkvision to give him warning of any large object in there. "Can someone with a torch come about 10' behind me?" he asks.
He warily walks into the cave, moving very slowly and carefully, testing each step before putting his full weight on the ground.
