Aftermath

Trace
Thursday March 13th, 2008 2:37:58 PM

Trace claps Jurgen, thanks for saving my skin, just dont do it again. Trace pokes him the side and lets Savin go to work.

Trace walks outside and helps pile the bodies and general clean up around the area. He then tends to his wounds and Shadows.

Aftermath [DM BrianZ]
Thursday March 13th, 2008 7:19:03 PM

OOC- accepts the baton of adventurer bashing +12 from Steve :)

The group enjoys a meal with the family of farmers. They thank Jurgen profusely for the generous gift. They are already making plans to rebuild with the money.

There is some concern over what to do with the bodies of the fallen. No final decision has been reached yet.

There are two unconscious prisoners. An orc and a winter wolf. The orc who is awake is being questioned.

Savin's threats and the dwarves presence seems to make the orc warrior(#27) more than willing to talk. He speaks common somewhat well, and looks nervously at the dwarves as he answers. [sense motive checks if listening...] "We was ordered to raid the humie town for food and stuff. Humies makes good stuff to use. Da giant Dame wuz in charge. We follow orders good. Da giants were just happy to have a challenge. Dey seemed bored dat da humies wouldn't fight much. Are you gonna let me go now?"

From the scouting that was done, you are aware that a small group of survivors fled the battle, heading in the general direction they came from.

No one has checked on the town yet...

Durgan
Thursday March 13th, 2008 7:21:08 PM

Durgan puts his axe away. "So what should we do first? Should we split up?"

Peerimus [Sub: Jeff C]
Thursday March 13th, 2008 8:32:38 PM

Peerimus listens and tries to gauge whether there is truth in the orc's words [Sense Motive Check - 14]. His thoughts are too fixated on what would have to be done with the captives to really determine anything. It was certainly a problem, if the party was to immediately give chase to the orcs.

"I don't much like this situation. We've solved the immediate orc and giant problem, but if we let them get away, they'll just come back either with bigger numbers or when we're not prepared. Not to mention these 'orders'. This could just be the beginning of a much larger problem. If we start after them, we should be able to either catch them or follow them to their stronghold." He glances in the direction of Heranmar and sighs. "But Durgan's right, it may be best to split up because we should probably do a quick check on the town, to make sure that it's okay. I don't think we've got a teleport ready," he looks to Jurgen and Firn'gaer to contradict this statement, "but it'll only take Jurgen a minute or two to Dimension Door there. If Savin and him go, they can take the two orcs and the wolf to Heranmar to lock up until we have a better solution. And if Shay stays here, Jurgen can alert us through their empathic link if there's trouble while him and Savin help Heranmar as best they can until we arrive. Otherwise, the two of them will head back to catch up with the rest of us."

"It's a plan that has you walking again, Savin, but what do you think? Does anyone have any other ideas?"

Kazak  d20+1=14
Thursday March 13th, 2008 11:26:16 PM

Listening as Peerimus comes up with some options ... stepping next to the druid and talking quietly as not to be overheard by the prisoner " well if ya gonna take the prisoners back then i suggest ya muzzle the wolf ... and not to mention tie da hands of da orcs ... they are capable of using magics "

"hey Savin ask em who ordered the mission and if there is more of dem lurking about "

sense motive check d20+1=14

Savin
Friday March 14th, 2008 8:28:58 AM

Savin shakes his head at the suggestions of the druid and pulls him off to the side so he won't be heard by the prisoners. "I understand that we want justice served but does it make sense to bring a wolf that can breathe deadly cold blasts back to the town? I say finish off the wolf and just bring the orcs. The wolf is to dangerous and deadly.

I can run back to town without much wasted time or effort and check on things. I doubt that a second group circled around since Trace didn't see any tracks of a second group but I do believe we need to run down the surviviors and kill the rest of the giants. They are to much of a threat to leave to the common man. Oh and are you ever gonna give me a cure? Getting whacked by 4 giants at once stings!"

Savin moves back to the orc prisoner and asks, "Did we kill the Dame? Does dame mean female or is it a name? Do you know if all the giants were here in the battle? Where do you think they are headed now? Answer truthfully and you will be well treated, lie and you join your dead friends."

Jurgen
Friday March 14th, 2008 1:13:57 PM

Jurgen's face clearly warms at the praise from Kazak, Firn'gaer and Trace. He may have been a few years older, but the sorcerer still felt he had something to prove. At Peerimus' suggested plan, Jurgen starts counting off the number of Dimension Door's needed to make it home. He'd have to burn some stronger spells to do it, but if the boss-man said jump...

"If you're willing to head back to town on your own Savin, that would certainly save me some spells for later." He didn't mind not going to Heranmar. Every time he cast that spell, he got anxious. It was a spell that one could easily mess up. Jump through a dimension door and come out with an arm in a different place than it used to be. And six in a row? That had to dramatically increase the odds of mishap.

"Friends, I may have stood by while you threatened torture," Jurgen tries to hide a shiver, "but I couldn't allow you to actually do it. They are prisoners, including the wolf. You don't have to treat them with kindness, but if you step into evil to combat evil..." He lets that last statement hang, hoping that Savin got the point. He didn't want to remind the monk that each member of the Children was also dangerous and deadly. The only check on their power was their own words.

(OOC: I'm not sure how to play where Peerimus would stand on killing the winter wolf in cold blood. But I do know where Jurgen does: it's an intelligent, sentient creature (heck, some Woldian PCs have lower ints). If the wolf surrenders, killing it would be murder. And he can't support it any more than he could doing the same to the orcs.)

Kit'Miara
Friday March 14th, 2008 11:13:44 PM

Kit is totally undecided about what to do about the wolf. On the one hand killing it would be the best thing so it would not be let loose on more innocent people but on the other she does not like killing just for the sake of killing. She ponders the choice in her head for quite a while then solemnly adds her two cents "I hate killing just for killing but if we let this wolf loose there is no way it will just run away and leave everyone alone it will continue killing and that is not safe for any of these people so I think that maybe killing it would be for the best" she sighs and shakes her head then waits silently to see what everyone's decision is.

Kazak
Friday March 14th, 2008 11:33:29 PM

Nodding at Jurgen's statement " like i said we can muzzle da beastie .... but Savin is right it might be a little much for da local miltia to handle "

"Maybe we can sell it to the Mailed fist unit that traveled thru here recently .... they might be able to train it or have use for it .. that way the town can use that profit to train their own dogs .... i do recall several of the miltia are doing that "

"also don't forget they let da family live ... didn't kill them ... which i'm sorta surprised about " as Kazak eyes the orc prisoner " wonder why ?"

Savin "illegal post"
Saturday March 15th, 2008 12:14:06 AM

Savin looks up at Jurgen and smiles, "I agree with you, I don't like killing for the sake of killing but I do believe in justice. No matter what you think, we are the law here. If you think you can put a monster on trial, then feel free, but know that I will hold you responsible if the beast escapes and kills any of the townspeople.

I also leave you in charge of the beast as well. You can waste your energies guarding it, feeding it and making sure it doesn't escape."

Savin looks at Kazak and says, "Killing it is wrong but selling it into slavery is right? All of these creatures have committed the crimes. They destroyed property, attempted murder, armed robbery just to name a few. I am always amazed on how we eagerly go into battle and without second thought are willing to kill evil creatures but if we capture them, suddenly we have to cure them and respect their rights. I consider myself a good man. I help others and protect the weak but if I find a scorpion in my bed, I kill it."

Savin then heads back to the orcs and his questions.

Kit'Miara
Saturday March 15th, 2008 1:23:13 AM

"I agree with Savin, if we can somehow make sure it will not hurt any others then let it live but if there is no choice then we cannot let it harm more innocent people"

Trace
Saturday March 15th, 2008 3:30:42 AM

Trace pulls the dagger and walks behind the wolf and slits its throat. I saddens me to do this but this is evil and it has no place here. I or no of you will take the time to take it to an evil plane and we will not be responsible for letting an evil creature exist in this area. There is much to do, Savin, run to Hernamar and make sure the town is safe and let them know to be on guard and take what measures needed. I will move ahead with Kit and Kat and Shadow to follow the Trail so that it doesnt grow cold. I would like to have some parchment and writing to send messages back with Shadow. Evil must be removed frome these lands at all cost. If left to themselves they will only multiply and grow strong and maybe one day too strong. We crush them while we can and hope for peace in the future. Prepare for war, pray for peace. ""if Peerimus dosnt stop him Trace will move out with Kit and Kat and Shadow to keep the trail while the other get ready to follow.

Prisoners [DM BrianZ]
Saturday March 15th, 2008 4:02:25 PM

OOC- those darn drunk elves :)

As Trace moves to kill the wolf, a few unsure voices ask him to hold. It may very well be the best course of action, but it seems it will need to be discussed first.

OOC- the DM feels this is a gray area. Feel free to debate in character and via email over the weekend. Good roleplaying all and no hard feelings!

Jurgen
Saturday March 15th, 2008 7:41:19 PM

(OOC: I'm going to assume that Firn'gaer does a Knowledge check. And if Firn made one, he wouldn't even need to roll 'cause he has a +23. Go team Firn'gaer.

Also, please forgive any half-formed thoughts that are in this post.)

"There is a distinct line between killing an enemy in battle and killing them afterwards, when they are captured. Only one of those is murder in my books. As for your analogy Savin, could the scorpion surrender to you? Could it plead for mercy? Could it have let the family live, as Kazak reminds us that the orcs did? No and that is the difference. Neither the orcs nor the winter wolf are simple animals without minds or thoughts. They are creatures with the ability to think and make rational decisions for themselves." He makes sure to move the conversation out of hearing range of the prisoners. Desperate people did desperate things and Jurgen didn't want to go down that path.

"If your argument is that we cannot allow them to live because they are capable of hurting people, beware where that line of thinking leads. Friends, us nine are some of the strongest people for miles around. Savin, who could stop you if you decided to attack Heranmar? Or you Trace? Just because there is the ability to do evil within them, doesn't mean that we are allowed to kill them. We should stop those who do evil when we can, convince those who are willing to change their ways, and lock up the rest. Force should, most definitely, not be the first option used."

"Let us be clear. I'm not advocating that we simply rap them on the knuckles and let them walk free. That's ridiculous. They, as you say, have committed crimes. They will need to be punished for those. And if their surrender is not on the level and they attack, killing them is the only option. Otherwise, we take them to the appropriate authorities to be dealt with. If Heranmar is incapable of dealing with them, we take them to Hook City. If it comes down to it and I am the only one who will take responsibility for the prisoners, I will do it. It may not be the easy thing to do, allowing them to live. But doing the right thing is not always easy. That doesn't mean we shouldn't do it. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try..."

Trace
Saturday March 15th, 2008 10:33:52 PM

Trace stops before sliceing, and scratches his head with the dagger and then with a heavy sigh. Are you serious? You want to put the wolf, a killing machine on trial? You have got to be kidding me. Trace slides the dagger back into its hidden place and finds a seat for this one. Ok, why dont we ask the fine humans what they think would have happened if we did not show up and what they would like to see happen.

Do we not toss the extra baggage, get the info needed from this lieing sack "pointing to the orc" and continue to stamp out evil where ever it is or should we pass out flyers and ask that all evil doers please show up to Hook city for their due process. I think it is a waste of energy and may be a waste of lives to do this. They were not interested in rights and respect when chasing down the taurs and humans. Peerimus is our elected leader and what ever he says goes. Wether I agree with it or not.

(just role playing trace! just imagine Trace as a short marine type with a chip on his sholder, all work no play awsome when the furr flys but not some much at due process. lol)

Savin
Saturday March 15th, 2008 10:37:30 PM

Savin smiles at Jurgen and extends his hand saying, "All good points....fine debate points but utter nonsense in the practical Wold. What happens if you capture an powerful sorceror capable of devastating magic. He has killed babies, enslaved villages, and raped women. Are you gonna turn him over to the authorities? Can normal authorities even handle him? Can you get him their in the first place?

On to the matter at hand, what are you going to do if we capture these giants? Tie them up and march them back? Are you going to march back this wolf while his comrades continue their terror maybe killing more. No they have already made their decision. They have broken the laws of the land and I think as defenders of Heranmar and other innocents we have to take the matter in our own hands. Yes it is dangerous, but do you really thnk we are going to abuse the power?

These creatures are worse than scorpions because they have intelligence and chose thier path. I won't risk other lives by wasting the time. If you feel you must, I understand but I won't support you.

Jurgen
Sunday March 16th, 2008 6:14:10 AM

"Trace, you and I are both killing machines. I'd like to think that we'd get a trial. And I don't care what the family would like to happen any more than I care what the Gold Dragons would like to happen. An evil act is an evil act. We are heroes, or at least we are supposed to be." Jurgen looks over towards the wolf and sighs. It would have been easier if the battle had ended cleanly with no survivors.

"As for your hypothetical..." Jurgens turns to Savin while ignoring the undertone of the monk's remarks, "We'd find a way to deal with him. If I have to personally escort him to be judged and then kill him myself, so-be-it. Or perhaps I'd go speak with the authorities before and ask permission to carry out their judgment on the battlefield. And if it were a situation where I could kill the sorcerer, but was unable to capture him, I'd likely kill him. But that isn't the problem we are faced with now."

"My worry isn't that I think you'd abuse your power and attack Heranmar. My worry is that you are considering abusing your power right now." He says the last part very carefully, clearly unsure of himself. "We disagree. I'm not saying that these three can be redeemed, although if they asked..." He wasn't quite sure what how he'd take being in that situation, "regardless, I'm saying that they need to be taken to the be dealt with by the law. If you are going to chase after the escaped giants and orcs, you should go. I will take the orcs and the wolf to Heranmar and catch up with you afterwards. If there's not suitable way to hold them, I'll stay until it's dealt with."

Kit'Miara
Sunday March 16th, 2008 8:38:36 PM

Kit seems very troubled by the problem that faces her and she thinks for a while before speaking again. "Morally I feel it is not right to kill someone or something just because it MAY be more of a danger yet at the same time this creature is bred to be evil. Is there someway we can get this wolf to someone who can handle it or perhaps retrain it. If we can do this without putting ourselves or others in more danger I think that this would be the best course of action. I cannot my mind around killing it without being in a fight with it. If there is nothing we can do to make sure it does not harm others then the safest thing to do for innocents is to kill it but I would prefer not doing so." You can still see the wheels whirring it Kit's head as she is obviously having to put a great deal of thought into the issue.

Jurgen
Sunday March 16th, 2008 9:53:53 PM

"I apologize, Savin. I spoke too quickly. You are, most definitely, a hero. And a good man too." He winces, frustrated that his tongue moved faster than his brain. "Over the last few years, I have spent some time as a captain of the guard. The enforcement of the law is something that has stuck with me. What we do here today may just be a drop in the ocean. But we are heroes. And our drops send ripples into eternity."

As Kit'Miara speaks, Jurgen glances in Peerimus' direction. "Her idea isn't without merit. You and Trace certainly have skill in that regard... That's to say. You two may know someone willing and able to undertake such a task?"

"Here's another option. We know there is a bigger problem than just these orcs attacking Heranmar. The centaurs told us they were after huge amounts of supplies. They didn't know why and I'm not sure if any of these captives can tell us why. But if we could get to their encampment... I doubt we could face a real army of orcs and giants, but we don't need to..." He turns his eyes to the orcs and the wolf, bringing his voice down. "We could use these three. I can disguise myself as an orc. Peerimus might be able to manage to be a winter wolf. Those who can't match our disguises, follow behind. We offer our captives a chance at some form of redemption for helping us. And then we go meet up with those who escaped. Say we got away too. And then we go all the way back to their camp, find the leader and... get them to tell us what is going on."

He looks at everyone trying to gauge their reactions. The plan was a bit of a stretch, but he was trying to find a solution that worked for everyone.

Trace
Sunday March 16th, 2008 10:20:26 PM

Jurgen, out of all the babble so far, that has to be the best soultion I have heard. Not sure if it will work but its better than a stick in the eye. I'll go and work with the wolf and see if it is possible on my end.

As far as tracking, we have time. Will not be any problem tracking giants but if rain comes that might slow us down. As far as the evil creatures, we can allways teleport them to the land of the or what ever that god awfull place we were or do we still have to kill someone to do that?

Is it even possible for evil to turn good?

Savin
Sunday March 16th, 2008 11:24:05 PM

"Trace's plan does have some merit but again I don't think we can trust the orcs and especially a winter wolf not to betray us once they have rejoined their friends."

Savin turns to the spellusers and asks, "Do you have a longterm enchantment that can be used to influence their good behavior? It also might help in getting information out of them. Charm Monster, Dominate monster or even a geas?"

Savin turns to Peerimus and says, "You are our leader and I will abide by your decision. I can't believe that without powerful magics, we will be able to control the orcs or the winterwolf enough to be useful. I think the wolf especially but all of them should be put down. The council has given us the right to make these decisions. The right of high justice. It is hard to take life without the influence of battle, but sometimes it is necessary. What you decide, I will abide."

Savin will head back to his orc friend and get his the answers to the questions asked. (Several posts ago). He will then run back to the town, checking quickly on its condition, reporting in on what they have found and what has occured.

Savin will say to Trace before he goes, "If you leave before I return, leave a marked trail and I will follow it and catch up. I want to help scout out the other giants."

Firn'gaer
Monday March 17th, 2008 7:32:32 AM

"I say let the counsel of villagers decide. Short of that, we teleport the orc to a location away from any harm to us. My personal opinion is that we would not receive any kindness or quarter from them if the positions were reversed, but because the orcs that captured my in the Ice Veins did not kill me right away I am willing to give the orc the same restraint."

"As for the winter wolf, I cannot see a way to control it. I believe it is evil by nature and not a learned behavior as we might see in other races. The magic which gave this beast its cunning, intelligence, and foul breath is wholly evil. I do not want to allow it to continue to exist. It is the same as allowing the liche to live when you have his soul in your hands."

Kit'Miara
Monday March 17th, 2008 8:31:32 AM

"I agree with Jurgen's idea it seems to be the best plan and if we are not able to do it then we should go with Firn'gaer's plan" Kit says.

Firn'gaer (second)
Monday March 17th, 2008 8:42:42 AM

"I think we should learn more of the orcs as I said before. But I don't think sneaking into a camp full of orcs and giants - with a winter wolf that is incapable of changing, and an orc who has shown no signs of wanting to change his ways - is a good idea and is, frankly, foolish. We don't need to sneak in to learn what they are up to. For Gods sake, Jurgen, you're a sorcerer - use magic. We learn what we can from afar, and if that is not enough then risk lives, but not before."

Peerimus and Yorrick
Monday March 17th, 2008 9:29:10 AM

Peerimus listens as the conversation and debate volleys among the rest of the group. At least between Jurgen and Savin with input from a few others. "We are the chosen heroes and protectors of Hernamar. Raiding bands, be they human brigands, orcs, dragons or giants are to us to stop. There is little difference to me whether an enemy surrenders or is found with life still in them at the conclusion of a battle."

"We are not going to take either of them to Heranmar. Nor will we take future enemies to Hernamar unless we are specifically bringing a someone to justice. This is our responcibility, our charge and our charter, we will not be shirking from it."

need to read more of last week before continuing.....

Peerimus 2nd post
Monday March 17th, 2008 12:17:52 PM

Perimus shakes his head sligthly as the conversation shifts to re-training the Winter Wolf. "It is not an animal to be trained or reared. It is as intelligent as most of the townsfolk. A thinking reasoning creature. But I too am struck by the fact that there was a family left to be saved. To me this states they were not here for killing. It seems as the orc has stated. They came to pillage what they could. Those not resisting or acting as threats were left relativly unharmed. At least physically and at least from what we encountered and have been told. I would like the family's view on the events leading to this point. Surely the giants and orcs spoke to them in some way to get them inside and tied up."

Peerimus will talk to the eldest male and get his report on what happened and then talk breifly with the rest of the family as he can. Those not wanting to, he will not push to talk. Unfortunately Savin has already offered the orc freedom in exchange for information and the orc has given it. Killing the other two simply because they were more severly injured in the fight would not work with the Druids conscious and so it now seemed to him that they would be releasing all three of them. Another thing that did not sit well with him, but now he was getting to far ahead of himself. First he would hear what the family had to say. They were in no rush, despite what some of the others thought. The giant would not be disappearing and after such a brutal loss and possibly the loss of their leader, they would be in no hurry to return. They had time.

Another troubling thought, it seemed almost personal to some of the giants. Perhaps the Wolf could provide information there. Peerimus relays his intention to speak with the family, reminds the group that all three should be considered equal prisoners and all would be dealt with as sentient intellignet creaures.

"There are still a few missing pieces to this puzzle and we should try and fit them in. Trace, Durgan, Kazak stand direct watch over them. Savin, get to town and confirm all is well and relay the raiding band has been destroyed and we are taking further steps. They don't need to know more right now. Firngaer, Jurgen and Kit, I would appreciate your counsil in speaking with the family."

Jurgen
Monday March 17th, 2008 2:02:57 PM

"You act as if the orcs or the wolf are incapable of reason. I feel you are dearly mistaken on the difference between a winter wolf and a lich, but it appears that no amount of words on my part will convince you otherwise." He rolls his eyes. "We tell them what they have to do in order to make up for their crimes. And we make it clear that if they give us away, they will be the first to fall. Yes, it is a plan with risks. But what do you suggest I do, Firn'gaer? I have no spell that can interrogate someone from afar without any contact, nor do I even know of one. Do you wish me to learn new spells at the drop of a hat? You may have such ability, wizard. I do not. It may be a foolish plan, but I'm trying."

At Trace's comment, Jurgen pipes up yet again. One could guess that sorcerer-paladin liked to hear his own voice, but Jurgen was fairly certain that he wouldn't have anyone to talk to after the day was done. "The possibility for change is within all reasonable creatures. Anyone can fall from grace. And while it is certainly harder to make the climb out of the pits of evil, it can be done. Showing the fallen acts of good and kindness can certainly help them see their errs. Just because evil would not show you kindness, does not mean you cannot be the better man. Of course, the choice is up to you."

When Peerimus calls upon him, the man takes a deep breath and looks at Firn'gaer. Jurgen knew that he was unfairly placing blame for events long past on the wizard, but he didn't have any way of explaining it to the gnome. "You are, as is often the case, much wiser and level-headed than I, Peerimus. I did not fully understand what power had been placed in our hands and will carry out your judgment as ordered. Firn'gaer may call me a fool for mentioning it again, but I believe that if they are given the choice between an immediate sentence and a chance to undo some of their damage, they will jump at the opportunity to be helpful. But unless you ask it, I will resist the urge to bother the group with my further thoughts. As for the family, I will gladly speak to them."

He awaits further instruction from the druid and, if receiving none, will talk with the family and find out exactly what happened.

Trace
Monday March 17th, 2008 2:21:14 PM

Trace whispers to Peerimus, "We can allways let them go and then We can track them as they lead us back to where they came."

I also would like to return to Hernamar to resupply before we venture forth.

Questions [DM BrianZ]

OOC- Sorry George! I lost the extra questions in the debate:

The orc looks up at Savin, hope remaining in its' eyes as it answers as best it can. "The Dame is da title of the giants leader. She wuz not here. She's crafty that one. She can make ya do things you don't wanna do." The shaman looks thoughtful. "All da giants? No not all. Some still back at the camp. They had work ta do." The other orc looks over at the shaman. "Can we go now boss?"

Peerimus and Jurgen speak with the family. The farmers supply what little information that they can. "The raid was mostly for stealing stuff. I never heard of this big of a group before. The plan we overheard was pretty simple. The giants were going to throw a few boulders to get their attention, the orcs were going to do the grunt work of hoofing whatever supplies they could steal off the town and the wolves were going to circle the town and make sure none escaped. They didn't talk of killing anyone but I never heard that there were any orders not to kill anyone." He shudders. "I hate to think what might have happened if you hadn't shown up now. I'm sure in their raid many would have been hurt. I don't care what you do to the prisoners. They may have just as easily killed us. They did spare us, but they are orcs after all." The shaken farmer returns to his family.

Trace goes to question the winter wolf. As he approaches, the wolf addresses him in a guttural but eerily unbroken common. "Look, I know that you made a deal not to kill the orcs. I want to bargain for my life too. I will lead you to the orc camp if you promise to release me as we approach it. The Dame of the giants would kill me for telling you. The others that escaped had a big start on me. They would guess I talked if I come back late. I won't be redeemed as your fellow over there put it, but I can promise you these lands will not see my kind for many moons."

There is a debate amongst the group. It would seem as though you are the law and your actions have consequences for the town and region. The thoughts weigh heavily on Jurgen's mind. And the tattoo on his arm begins to itch. The sensation grows worse until Jurgen feels that he can barely stand it. If anyone notices, they see Jurgen scratching at the chaos tattoo...

Durgan
Monday March 17th, 2008 8:34:22 PM

Durgan keeps an eye on the prisoners with his brother. They seem complacent but he keeps his guard up anyway.

"I may not want to let em go, but I believe we gave em a good message about what will happen if they come near Heranmar again." Durgan looks over at the pile of bodies. "Hey Jurgen, weren't ye going to take care of that?"

Trace
Monday March 17th, 2008 8:53:40 PM

Trace continues to talk with the wolf trying to gather what information that he can about the size of the main group, who is there and what are their abilities. I can not grant saftey yet but if you give me enough reason to show taht you realy want to help rid us of this problem then I will speak on your behalf to my leader.

Trace thinks to his bow and ask if the wolf and orcs are trying to put one past them or are the sincere in helping to save their lives.

Jurgen
Monday March 17th, 2008 9:51:54 PM

"Thank you sir. I'm sorry we weren't here faster to prevent this from happening." He looks to Peerimus as the story is told. The more information they received, the more likely it seemed that fairly big trouble was brewing.

Jurgen looks at his chaos tattoo suspiciously. There was something distinctly disturbing about the seemingly randomness that they brought about. When he hears Durgan, he looks up and does his best to put the itch out of his mind. It doesn't really fade, but he manages to put it aside for a moment to catch Durgan's words. "Oh, right. I suppose I'm on clean-up duty." He waits for Peerimus to give him the nod and then goes over to the pile of bodies. A few spell words later and a green ray slips from his fingers [Disintegrate - Target: the corpses]. When the bodies have turned into dust, he heads back to Peerimus and the family. All the while, he rubs his tattoo anxiously. A glance at the other Children tells him that they don't feel it too, which was unnerving in itself.

Kazak
Monday March 17th, 2008 11:12:43 PM

The dwarven warrior stands near the trio of prisonors as requested by Peerimus .... his face a mask dwarven stone.

Watching as the winter wolf speaks to Trace .... Kazak will catch the rangers eye and just nod in agreement.

"surprisingly they let the farmer and his family live ... that is worth something "

Savin
Monday March 17th, 2008 11:36:11 PM

Savin belatedly thanks Peerimus for his cure. He feels much better now.

(ooc I never said that the orcs could live if they were helpful. All I did was threaten to kick the crap out of them if they weren't. I think the DM jumped to a conclusion here or at least the orcs did! :-))

Savin says to the others before he leaves and in hearing of the orcs and wolf. "Peerimus, if you decide to let them go for cooperation, I am fine with that but make it clear that if I ever see them in this area or hear of them hurting any of the citizens of Heranmar, I will run them down and they will wish for death before I am done with them."

Savin then shows his speed by sprinting off as fast as he can towards Heranmar to see if the town is in good shape.

Firn'gaer
Tuesday March 18th, 2008 11:41:32 AM

Firn'gaer listens to the various opinions and the talk of the prisoners and in his customary fashion begins to stroke his beard as he thinks. He pauses briefly, taking out his pipe and tobacco, lites his pipe and continues to stroke his beard and smoke.

When he has stroked his beard for several minutes and finished his pipe, he says, "I really abhor the idea, but I do have a suggestion that is not quite as reckless as Jurgen's idea, but is along the same lines. We parlay with them." He says pausing to draw on his pipe. "They know something we don't, and my guess it has something to do with this Migration that we were warned of. I don't know about any of you, but I've never heard of a raiding party of orcs and giants whose main mission was only to gather supplies and not take them after they've killed everyone."

"I think we should consider the wolf's proposal and have them lead us to the encampment, which has probably moved by now or is in the process, but a group that size should be easy to follow if needs be. From there we consider a trade for what information they may know. If provision are their main objection then we should be able to convince the village to part with enough to make the threat of the raiders disappear."

"Now we have the means of making a fast escape if needed should the giants decide not to talk with us, but with the portents and the odd behavior of the raiders, I believe it might be a risk worth taking. In this I would suggest that only a few go to the camp. The smaller numbers might be seen as a sign of weakness or it might be seen as a true gesture of our intent to talk. They had survivors to attest to our strength so it might work. If not, we teleport away and think on it some more. Thoughts?"

Trace
Tuesday March 18th, 2008 3:17:59 PM

I am not real keen on the idea of giving anything to this raiding party but maybe to save their own lives. Give them a chance to retreate. Maybe offer to open trade with them to where they can purchase the supplies they want.

Peerimus
Tuesday March 18th, 2008 5:28:04 PM

Peerimus gives Jurgen the go ahead on the bodies, but makes sure no prisoners can see or hear what happens. If they were set free, providing them information to the groups further abilities was unwise at best. to Jurgens discomfort and the tattoo, Peerimus has other more pressing concerns right now. The Chaos marks only created questions upon questions and were wrapped in riddles. He did not feel like slapping his head into such an immovable object at this time.

Peerimus smirks at Savin's last comments before striking out. [Really my trusted friend, such things are entirely unecessary to remind me of.[/i]

Brokering a deal withe those that came to destroy and take what they could does not appeal at all to Peerimus.

"It would very likely show us as weak, despite the battle fought here. Parlay has merit, but we arrive in force."

Peerimus will counsel with Firngaer and Jurgen away from any prying ears upon talking to the family and hearing what the wolf and orcs have had to say.

"I am inclined to show mercy to them. I want to, but the Wolf has said he will not change and will hold true to his evil ways. The orcs..." he pauses. "The one is a follower, he came as he was told. I hold more weight over the shaman and the leaders that gave the commands. My mind tells me to execute the shaman as an enemy of the free town of Heranamar. The soldier to cut free and the wolf to destroy as unrepentable evil."

"We set precedent here and I am torn between logic and mercy."

Trace
Tuesday March 18th, 2008 6:23:17 PM

Trace speaks with Peerimus, "If it is your wish, I will kill the wolf, for what it is worth, I too belive it is the only course that should be taken." If ok, Trace drags the tied and muzzeled wolf off to the side and using his knowlage of nature, kills the wolf as quick and painless as possible. Once dead will skin the wolf and take to the town. Maybe someone there can help turn it into a fine cloak and imbune it with magic. As a hunter will not let anything go to waste. If it is cookable will make a meal of it as well and feed Shadow, himself and who ever else wants

Jurgen
Tuesday March 18th, 2008 8:02:19 PM

"The problem, as you say, is that of mercy. In the matter of the wolf, it appears to be a simple case. We gave it the option to change, that was all I asked. That being said, he says something that is hard to ignore. If he really can make due on his offer for his kind to depart these lands..." Jurgen shrugs. "Whether we can trust him or not. I'd be inclined to, but I'm rather naive in that respect. As for the orcs. If you believe the shaman must be executed, so be it. Remember though that he, too, was acting under orders though. We are likely never to meet an enemy who would show us kindness after capture. But it was Sir Thomas who first taught me that to show mercy is the first step to uprooting evil. And it would be a double standard were I to ask forgiveness for my crimes, while being unwilling to forgive those who trepass against me."

"I'd also be inclined to agree with Firn'gaer's idea of parlay. We, if possible, overtake the escapees. We bring them, as our prisoners, to their encampment. And we arrive in full force. Make it clear that we are doing this Dame a favor, not the other way around." He stares at the tattoo on his left hand. It didn't hurt, exactly. It tingled as if there was a heatless flame flickering against it. As the sensation grew, he closes eyes to attempt to shut it out. It may have been on his hand, but he could feel it in his head too.

"Peerimus, Firn'gaer. Something... something is wrong."

Firn'gaer (second)
Tuesday March 18th, 2008 8:58:51 PM

"Trace, curb your bloodlust or you'll have more to worry about than orcs and giants." He casts a glare at Trace. "If the decision is made to execute the prisoners, and it has not been made, it will not be at your hands. Since we are jury and judge, I think on it, the more I think banishment is a more compassionate sentence. And it is within our means to do it."

Trace
Tuesday March 18th, 2008 10:00:39 PM

Trace snaps his head around quickly, "Hold your tongue Wizard! You dare threaten me a fellow child of chaos when in the same breath you fight to save the life of pure evil. If I thougt it was needed the wolf would allready be dead without asking. As soon as Peerimus gives the go ahead, my dagger will cut through the fur, flesh, and muscle to take the life of this evil creature.

Now let this burn in real good before your open your more holy than thou lips again. I would gladly give my life in battle to save you but dont even kid yourself to think that you could bring me to your warped thought of justice.

Now having said that, I will say agian in a more clear manner! Nothing is done weather it be live or die untill our one and ONLY leader commands. Weather it is my way our yours that ends the day it is PEERIMUS decisson to make!

Now we have said more than our peace lets hear Peerimus final word.

Decisions [DM BrianZ]
Tuesday March 18th, 2008 10:36:59 PM

Trace hears the now familiar voice of his bow in his mind. A voice that is becoming more comfortable over time. The bow feels that the creatures are sincere but maybe there is more to the story?

With a suggestion from Peerimus, Jurgen discretely disposes of the bodies. There will be no several thousand pound bodies to decompose on farm fields, despoiling the land. The prisoners were unable to see it.

Savin gives the prisoners a warning glance, then sets off for the town at full sprint to check on it. (OOC- let's just say the orcs were hopefull)

Firn'gaer lends some thought to the discussion. He forwards a variation on the previous plan, to meet with the orc encampment, and negotiate with them. He continues to wonder if the Migration has something to do with all of this.

The debate continues as everyone gives opinions. The orcs and wolf have all offered deals for their lives. Counter-offers have not yet been given. There are some heated words, as everyone hopes to make the best possible decision.

Several options have been suggested, and it is soon time to choose one of them. Jurgen thinks something may be wrong as the tattoo continues to act up and says so to Peerimus and Firn'gaer. The tattoo has gone from an unbearable itching to a burning painful sensation. Jurgen is not sure what is happening, but begins to hope that whatever it is, it ends soon...

Durgan
Tuesday March 18th, 2008 10:42:45 PM

OOC- Durgan could use about 104 points worth of healing :)

Durgan waits for Peerimus' word. In his native lands, these creatures would be put to the sword, but this is a new place, requiring new thoughts. "There is something of the plan to track down their camp. If all else fails, we got some more orcs ta smash!"

Wednesday March 19th, 2008 2:35:56 AM

(OOC: Everyone drop their HP totals into your next post. It'll make heals easier. Which... uh... Jurgen would know nothing about. ;))

Jurgen's first instinct is to reach for a healing potion from his bag. Before he manages to grab one, he is struck by the idea that the Crones were a great deal more powerful than he was and if they wanted him to writhe about in agony, they were more than capable of doing so. It did seem odd that he was the only one experiencing it. Then, hearing the ire grow between Firn'gaer and Trace, the sorcerer wondered if the Chaos powers weren't actually interfering with all of the Children.

"Both of you, stop! My tattoo is acting up." He considered adding a few exclamations regarding how much pain he was in and thought better of it. "I think yours are too. Listen to your own words! Is this what heroes sound like? You are not yourselves."

Jurgen steps forward, putting himself in between Trace and Firn'gaer. He had intentions of taking a few more steps and having a word with the orcs. Instead he falls to his knees overcome with pain. His free hand tightly crushing his Chaos tattoo. At the very least, his dramatics would distract his friends from their own drama. Not to mention he was starting to become concerned that his hand was going to explode from the pain.

Peerimus and Yorrick  d20+22=28 d20+10=13 d20+7=27
Wednesday March 19th, 2008 11:51:42 AM

"The wolf is in no position to make any sort of promise that his kind will not be seen in our lands. He has admitted he will be shunned and outcast and so I do not see him in any position to convince other winter wolves here to leave. He speaks for himself only."
Peerimus's face sets harder as Firngaer and Trace go at it, again. and then Jurgen joins and actually falls to the ground. His fingers reach up and pinch the bridge of his nose. "Firngaer, Trace help him to the house. Do what you can. I am going to deal with the prisoners."

The time had come and he would simply decide and live with the consequences. Mentally bracing himself, Peerimus turns on a heel and marches purposefully to the wolf and orcs. "Na'Aje Tae" he calls out and Yorrick lumbers over immediately all business [Handle Animal 28 Come]

Arriving he stands erect and casts a discerning eye over them and speaks. "I am Peerimus, Leader of the Protectors of Heranamar and bearer of the Mark of Chaos. I would know your names and those of your leaders. Know that you will be judged as enemies to the lives of the good people of Heranmar. Punishable by life imprisonment, banishment or death."

Looking to Kit, Please ask Mr. (did we get the name of the farmer?) to join us.

His eyes unyeilding, as best as he can, "I will hear you now and pass judgement. These will stand witness" and he gestures to the farmer, Durgan, Kazak and Kit.

Judgement [DM BrianZ]
Wednesday March 19th, 2008 9:54:32 PM

The farmers seem stunned you would want them to witness. "Why us sirs? Surely we are not worthy as we are simple farmers. My name is Jerek, and as a citizen of Heranmar I will stand witness for you, along with my brother Benson. Our last name is Spruce, chosen by our grandfather Ben. Benson is the third to carry the name in the line. I'm not sure why I tell all this except, it seems important this honor you have given us, and I thought you should know the names of those the orcs spared." The farmer may have had a motive in saying the last, but does not care to elaborate.

The first orc squeals. "Ummmm my name is drok? Ummmmm boss? Why is da humie lookin at me like that?"

The orc Savin had been questioning answers, "I am Grummpk. Shaman of the Treefell tribe. You destroyed most of our warriors today. If you let me go, you will not see us again. We were moving on before this raid and we still need to. My people need me. But they will survive without me. Do as you will."

The wolf looks up. "My name human? Won't your comscience be cleaner if you don't know it? Just some stupid monster you killed? I know how you feel and you are right. I am of the wild. Of nature. I may not have much goodness in me, but does that matter in the wild? Survival of the fittest? And among my people I am very fit." The wolf smiles. It makes the farmer and his brother shudder. "My name is Feyr. And I promise you I hold great sway over my fellow winter wolfpack."

Savin is still running. The town comes into view and he will be there shortly. Everything looks normal from this distance...

Jurgen shudders and collapses as Trace and Firn'gaer drag him to the remains of the farmhouse. The pain won't let him pass out entirely however, and he moans in pain as you move him. You can see his tattoo glowing from under his sleeve, and you wonder what is going on. Jurgen highlight: Highlight to display spoiler: { You hear a voice whispering in your mind. Firn'gaer
Thursday March 20th, 2008 7:08:14 AM

Firn'gaer is not much help to drag Jurgen, and doesn't even both the attempt. "Trace this discussion is not over, but will have to wait for now."

There is something going on that doesn't make sense. Why only raid? Why not kill the family? There are too many questions, and they're too dumb to recognize it . . . He thinks.

Firn'gaer is again paused by action or words of the orcs. "Why are you moving on?" He says to the orc. "What is it that you know of what is to come?" He says to the orcs.

After a short breath, he continues. "Do you think your people would be willing to talk this us? You've heard what I said. Do you think your leaders would exchange information for foodstuff? Would that be incentive enough to move on and leave this lands avoiding its peoples?"

Trace
Thursday March 20th, 2008 12:38:21 PM

Firn'gaer, the great migration? I swear I have heard this before. Back when I first came to Hernamar, when we first walked into town a dock worker asked if the migration had allready started. I,ll keep thinking about it (research).

Jurgen
Thursday March 20th, 2008 3:03:23 PM

"I want to-. I tried!" Jurgen mumbles softly. The sorcerer lays on the floor of the farmhouse biting his lip, trying to block out the pain. And there was that voice. It wasn't just asking him, it almost a demand. He was being charged with a duty. If only he could have the chance to think clearly, maybe it would make more sense. "I promise. I will!" He almost shouts those last words.

Peerimus
Thursday March 20th, 2008 5:21:09 PM

Peerimus's eyes took in the body language of the prisoners as best as he could and nothing seemd amiss. Great sway the wolf says, how valuable was Feyr? The Shaman was likely valuable as well though down playing his importance. More questions and unanswered riddles. They were already moving. from where to where and... Peerimus ceases his thought process as Firngaer broaches his idea again and more importantly asks the very questions he was thinking of. Peerimus though does have one other and he directs it to Feyr.

"Feyr, I do not see how you can maintain sway over your pack if the Dame would kill you for showing yourself near them. You have said as much moments ago. If you return now, so long after the others, they will know you were taken and they would kill you."

Answers [DM BrianZ]
Thursday March 20th, 2008 10:29:15 PM

Feyr looks at the druid. "The giants would kill me yes, not my packmates. We serve the giants but are not controlled by them and they know it well. My offer still stands."

Savin reaches the town. He is pleased to see that though the guards the group has been training look scared, none have abandoned post and they seem as prepared as they could be. Extra loaded crossbows lie near each guard, and they are spread out sufficiently well to cover all angles at the town. The guards are also far enough apart to make any good boulder throws from giants only able to take out a few of them at a time.

"What happened? We heard the fighting and saw flashes but thought it would be best to stay here at the town. Where is everyone else?" The nominal captain of the guard nervously asks questions not wanting to seem to give orders, but hoping to reassure the other guards.

The orc shaman answers Firn'gaer. "Yes gnome, it could be possible with my help to make such an arrangement. But you will have to bargain with the frost giant Dame. And that will be no easy matter."

Jurgen rolls about on the ground. As he screams in his mind acceptance of the offer, a bright light flashes. It is too bright to look at Jurgen directly. Soon, the light extends and thin beams slice out and unerringly strike every member of the Children of Chaos. Those further away from Jurgen are even able to see one beam lancing out towards the town. All of your tattoos glow sharply for a moment and then the light fades.

As the light disappears, some of you notice minor changes about yourselves. Jurgen notices major changes as everthing about him is changed, right down to his attire. The winds of chaos have blown through you and as is usual with chaos some are affected more than others.

Does this have anything to do with the current mental struggles over the prisoners? Jurgen highlight: Highlight to display spoiler: {As Jurgen lies on the ground, recovering and feeling back to normal, the voice leaves a few parting words; honor the code and protect.... But protect what? And what code? }

Durgan jumps as the beam of light hits him. It doesn't seem to have much effect though. "That durned fool of a human playing with the tattoos again? What has he gone and done now?"

Savin
Thursday March 20th, 2008 11:53:31 PM

Savin smiles reassuringly at the townsfolk, pride swelling in his chest, glad to see that the townsfolk are organized and ready to defend themselves.

"We met the raiders about a mile away from the town at a small farm. I believe it was the Spruce place. While the Spruces were scared and held prisoner for a while, they were spared any personal injuries, though their house was badly damaged. You might want to organize a repair party to help them out."

We killed most of the orcs, I believe 6 frost giants and several of their winter wolves as well. The rest ran off and we are questioning some prisoners and preparing to give chase. I don't believe the town is in much danger but you should remain vigilant for a while longer, posting more guards than usual in case some of them slipped around us. I don't think this is the case and you can stand down the majority of the militia."

Savin beams at them and says, "I am proud of you! While thankfully the attack didn't fall here, you were prepared to fight for your homes and each other. That takes courage. You have done yourselves proud."

Savin turns to head back and says over his shoulder, "I doubt we will be back for a while as we run down what the cause of this is. Don't fret if you don't see us for a while."

Savin starts working his way back and suddenly his tattoo flares for a few seconds. He looks down in surprise and speeds back wondering if the others are OK.

Jurgen rolls over from his place on the floor, drenched in sweat. He could have sworn the pain would never end. That his body was too weak to deal with it. Yet here he was. And, now that he thought about it, he felt good. Not just good, he felt better than he had in years. He called Shay down to his shoulder to have a word with the hawk, but the words came out in common. He tried again, thinking about the common language it had taken them years to learn. To no avail. Shay stayed on the roof of the house, peering oddly at Jurgen.

As he tried to stand up, he instinctively adjusted his sword to keep it from banging against the floor. He smi-. "Wait a minute. A sword?" Jurgen looked down to his side and saw, sure enough, there was a sheath at his side. In it was a rapier. The word "pyro" flicked into his head and he almost said it out loud, before reconsidering. Something else had caught his eye and distracted him: Durgan and Kazak were hurt. Fairly badly too.

He got up and walked over to the dwarves, catching their comments about his attempts to play with the tattoo. Instead of adding a few words of his own, Jurgen pulls two wands out of his pocket. They didn't look like something a sorcerer would use. Highly ornate, heavy glass and covered in High Woldian. Of course, Jurgen couldn't actually read them. But he did recognize Alemi's holy symbol. He pointed one towards Durgan and, before the dwarf would have a chance to say otherwise, began casting it's spell. [Cure Serious Wounds - 19 HP Cured. Target - Durgan]

"Well how about that..." There were many more changes for him to examine and understand. He felt lighter on his feet. Much lighter. But that was the least of the changes. Spells ran through his mind, many of them completely foreign. Other abilities too. For some reason, he was fairly certain that if anyone had tried to attack Durgan or Kazak right now, he could throw himself in front of such an attempt before the blow managed to strike. A few minutes ago, the sorcerer would have asked why he would possibly do such a thing. Now it seemed that there would come a time when their friendship required such action. Before putting the wands away, Jurgen flicks them a few more times and heals his dwarven companions. [Cure Serious Wounds x4 - 85 HP Cured. Durgan is topped up to full HP. Cure Light Wounds x10 - 55 HP cured. Kazak has 155. Note to self - A Cure Critical Wounds wand will become necessary.]

Finally, Jurgen's eyes turn towards Peerimus and the captives. He idly wondered how much of their dialogue was truth. He reached into his pocket, half-expecting to find a wand for such a purpose. This time, nothing came out. His thoughts shifted as he tried to determine if there was any hope for them. Although Jurgen himself couldn't tell, his eyes had turned to a milky white and he could feel the goodness within him. Or more precisely, the evil without [Detect Evil].

Peerimus
Saturday March 22nd, 2008 9:50:02 PM

Confouded Tattoos. Could they put on more displays at the most inopportune times. Pereimus did not know all thier was to negotiations and such, but he certainly knew that between Jurgens doubling over cries and the tattoo light show what a position of strength did not look like. Peerimus tries to steady himself and for a breif moment had closed his eyes as the tatoos flashed, he now opens them again.

"We shall soon see Feyr." He spreads his look to all three now as he continues, "Grummpk and Drok of the Treefell tribe and Feyr of the Wolves. You are to be banished upon pain of death from the lands surrounding Heranamar to 5 days journey. Before this sentence is exercised you will accompany us to the orc and Giant encampment. There we shall see if indeed you hold any sway Feyr and there Grummpk as well."

There was a gnawing thought a the back of his mind. Something was wrong, but he could not put a finger on it. All would become clearer. Mother kept few secrets and Father delighted it seemed in sharing them. "Durgan and Kazak if you would not mind, please maintain your guard with Yorrick." Peerimus beckons Jurgen and Firgaer to a distance to speak. "How much of our resources did we pour into that last conflict? I used my most powerful spells, but still have about everything else if needed."

Side note, Peerimus will suggest the farmer and the family head to town and stay there for a few days.

Jurgen
Sunday March 23rd, 2008 5:42:29 AM

"I wish I could tell you, Peerimus." He faces the druid, almost standing at attention. His hand rests next to his sword and seems ready, if not eager, to draw it. "Just moments ago, I would have told you that I was still able to be an asset in a fight. Many spells were ready. Now, I can't even remember some of my best. As if they were just pulled straight out of my fingers." He shook his head. From what he understood of wizard magic, that was how it worked. After you cast a spell, it slipped away from your mind until you were able to pull open your spell-book again.

But his magic was something else entirely. Jurgen never forgot a spell. The gestures and incantations were in his blood, like how a tailor knew to sew or a blacksmith knew how to temper steel. True, different spells worked different parts. And so if he cast the same one over and over, he would be too tired to try again until he rested. But that was the way all artists were. For Jurgen to have forgotten a spell... The idea should have been worrying. But he didn't feel worried. In fact, there was a new strength running through his body.

"As for this rapier... I am certain that I could charge into a fight with it. And be a credible threat. The Crones may have caused us some trouble with these changes, but have no fear my friend. We will not fail in this." Even as the captives move out of his direct line-of-sight, Jurgen still watched them from the corner of his eye. Jumpy wasn't the right word for it. Prepared, perhaps. Yes, that seemed right. Jurgen was trying to be prepared for any possible outcome.

The changes that had occurred to the sorcerer were massive, but there were many others lurking just under his surface thoughts that were waiting to be discovered. It would be an interesting few days.

(OOC: Jurgen cast "2x Level 0 * 1x Level 1 * 4x Level 4 * 1x Level 5 * 3x Level 6" today. Which would be fine, except Jurgen can no longer cast Level 6 spells. Up to you DMs as to how to deal with that, ect. Aren't I a fun addition to the game? ;) )

Monday March 24th, 2008 3:44:55 PM

The townspeople look greatly relieved at Savin's report. Savin can hear several people proclaim their faith in the group's ability to protect them.

The soldiers beam with pride. "Don't worry sir! The town will be safe while you are gone." Several people notice the tattoo flash, but no comments are made.

Jurgen is still getting used to the many changes to himself. He heals the dwarves, then reaches out with his senses. All three of the prisoners radiate an evil aura.

If the prisoners take any note of the lightshow they say nothing. Perhaps afraid to. Feyr smiles a big toothy smile at Peerimus' words. "Ready when you are."

The farmer and his family pack up their salvagable belongings and head towards town. They expect to stay there until the farm is rebuilt.

Durgan
Monday March 24th, 2008 8:46:16 PM

Durgan mutters something resembling 'thanks' to Jurgen. "Well brother, how do you feel about this orc camp?"

"Anyway, let's get goin'. The sooner we leave, the sooner we can get back to the Inn for an ale."

Jurgen
Monday March 24th, 2008 8:58:52 PM

As the family leaves, Jurgen waves them goodbye and tells them to leave a message with Holly when they find a place to stay. And if they need anything.

"I'm with Durgan. We should get going, unless Firn'gaer doesn't think we're ready." He, glancing at the dwarf, shuts off his new sense. It was an unnerving way to look at the world. "We'll probably have to catch a nights rest between now and the orc camp, anyway."

Kazak
Monday March 24th, 2008 11:27:35 PM

The dwarf listens to the banter "So far is it to the Giants camp ?" questions Kazak of the trio of prisoners

Without turning his attention away from his charges " i can't agree more brother ... i'm ready too " growls the warrior

"Just want to collect me javelins before we go .... just in case we can't come to terms with dem "

Savin
Monday March 24th, 2008 11:42:22 PM

Savin races back to the farm, puffing slightly, as he runs up. He makes sure to grab his spike chain before he joins the group and when he gets there gives Jurgen a hard look.

Fists clenched, he stalks forward, "Who are you and what do you do with my friend!?"

Jurgen
Tuesday March 25th, 2008 3:12:14 AM

"Savin, your ferver is appreciated, but I am still your friend. Jurgen, the Child of Chaos. The same who once tried to fly into the mouth of a dragon. And the same one who, moments ago, had to be saved by you. And Trace. And Durgan." He extends his hands outward, a gesture that they were empty and showing off both his tattoos: the Chaos symbol and Domi's twin triangles. "These flared up. Although I'm not sure it was my fault. I wanted, so badly, to help you all in that last fight. Seeing you, my friends, get wounded... I believe the Crones, or maybe Domi, were listening. There has been a significant change in me, as you can clearly see."

Other than the rapier, another new addition to his attire is a shining set of mithral chain. While he still looks stylish, he now appears more as an adventurer than a member of high society. A few minutes ago, Jurgen could have been confused for a noble being escorted by a band of heroes. Now, no such mistake could be made. Everything on his person looked to have a purpose and a place where it belonged. The tightly tied pack on his back, belt pouches neatly arranged, the sword completely free to be drawn at a moment's notice. Although it would have to be proved in combat, it appeared that Jurgen would certainly have a place standing side-by-side with the dwarves when swords needed to be drawn.

Even the man's ruffled black hair had changed. Now he wore light blonde hair, neatly combed and tucked away. He smiled and nodded to Savin. "I am the same man you just left, even if I'm different. Together, we'll figure out just how different that is."

Peerimus and Yorrick  d20+20=29
Tuesday March 25th, 2008 8:16:14 AM

Peerimus will agree to start moving immediately. "Kazak and Durgan will take the lead. Feyr will be right behind them providing direction. Yorrick and I will be right behind him. Then Trace with Drok and the Shaman with Jurgen. Firngaer bring up our rear with Savin. Kit and Kat will take our left and right flanks at 30'"

Peerimus looks to Shay. He had been a faithful companion for so long to Jurgen and the druid could not leave him and so he calls out to the bird. "Shay, I invite you to travel with us. I will care for you and keep you safe. We will return to my grove soon and you will have the run of th would as is proper." [Wild Empathy check 29]

Jeff C [OOC]
Tuesday March 25th, 2008 10:34:42 AM

(I should have been clearer, Peerimus. I still have four levels of sorcerer. Shay hasn't been dismissed, he and Jurgen just can't "talk" (as per the level 5 familiar ability "Speak with Master"). That being said, I'm fairly certain he wouldn't mind hanging out with a right proper druid :D)

Firn'gaer
Tuesday March 25th, 2008 11:19:35 AM

Firn'gaer is a little confused with the sudden abilities of Jurgen; as with other things that have occurred because of the Marks, he is sure that things will become clearer with time.

Firn'gaer has no objections to moving out right away and takes his position in the march.

Trace and Shadow
Tuesday March 25th, 2008 11:31:53 AM

Trace and Shadow fall in line as directed and start the march.

(ooc:I never got approval on my catacombs purchase in post a couple of weeks ago, do i have them now?)

Savin
Tuesday March 25th, 2008 11:38:38 AM

Savin still looks suspiously at Jurgen and assumes his place with Firn'gaer. He whispers to the mage, "Are we really sure it is Jurgen? Wonder if a doppleganger took him over?"

Moving out [DM BrianZ]
Tuesday March 25th, 2008 4:01:15 PM

OOC-Trace- I'm sorry, but your purchase needs to wait until you get back to town. Check with Holly :)

The group prepares formation and moves out. The orcs travel as directed, and Feyr seems to be cooperating. Trace and Peerimus can easily follow the giants' tracks as Feyr sets a brisk pace. Several times he races slightly ahead of the dwarves, but always waits for them to catch up. The twins have a little trouble keeping up, but they do not fall behind. Feyr indicates that at the current pace you should reach the camp in two days.

Questions surround Jurgen's transformation, but one thing that hasn't changed is his jovial mood. The rest remains to be seen...

The giant footprints are followed all throughout the day. Near dusk, it is time to set up an overnight camp. Feyr suggests a reasonable location, then seems to wait patiently near the other prisoners as the group arranges watches and presumably, guards.

The forest seems eerily quiet.

OOC- The DM recommends you discuss by email what your tactics/diplomacy will be for the orc/giant camp.

Jurgen
Tuesday March 25th, 2008 9:54:24 PM

During the long walk, Jurgen continues telling Savin stories that only he would know. He didn't want to wake up in the middle of the night with the monk's watchful eyes on him and not the prisoners. Once he feels confident that everyone knew that Jurgen was Jurgen, he moves onto the proper discovery of his new gear.

In his pockets, he found a scroll case that was nearly full of various spells. Jurgen took note of each one, making sure to remember which scroll was where. He did likewise with the potion bag he found in another pocket. He kept the curative wands close (and will offer healing if anyone needs). Most importantly, perhaps, he determined that his armor that marked him clearly as a combatant could appear as his usual set of flashy fashionable clothes. While he didn't feel the need to look apart from the other Children, he did recognize that a disguise that made him appear weaker might fool their enemies into trying to take him out of the fight first... Only to find out that it was not such an easy feat.

Later, towards the end of the day, he discovers another new part of his gear and uses it to prepare his sword [Extend Spell: Greater Magic Weapon - Rapier becomes +3. Duration - 22 Hours].

"I'll take the first shift, unless you say otherwise Peerimus, although I'll be better suited if someone else is the eyes and ears of the watch. It seems that the Chaos powers didn't see fit to grant me with sharper eyes. And I'll stick to the role of the guard. " Just before his watch starts, he uses his Rod to cast another spell [Extend Spell: Alter Self - Troglodyte form. Duration - 220 minutes]. If, at any point during his shift, there appears to be something suspicious, Jurgen will immediately cast his Shield spell. Otherwise, he'll spend his shift trying to find out more about the orcs and the wolf, just passing the time and keeping an eye on the prisoners.

Active Magic:
Mage Armor [?? Hours]*
Overland Flight [?? Hours]*
Greater Magic Sword [22 Hours]
*Both spells had 13 hours left in them, when the fight started at the cabin. Dunno what's left.

(OOC: I'll send an email off later, but Jurgen and... Kat (or is it Kit? Doh!) both have high Diplomacy scores. Perhaps Peerimus should instruct them as to what he wants said and then have them say it. Because they're so darned charming. :D)

Savin  d20+18=34 d20+17=31
Tuesday March 25th, 2008 11:45:57 PM

Savin seems molified by Jurgen's stories but he thinks to himself that a doppleganger can pluck those memories right out of his mind to use agaisnt him. He decides to watch Jurgen very closely during the next battle to see if he is effective. If he isn't, then Savin will have to take steps.

Savin volunteers for the dreaded 2nd shift saying that only non spellusers should take that one so they get a good nights rest.

Wednesday March 26th, 2008 1:36:27 PM

Peerimus spot checks the area that Feyr suggests for pretty much anything. Shifting quickly to Dire wolf to sniff around [survival 43 tracking] Assuming all is good he nods to Firngaer. The wizard would be creating a secure shelter and the druid moves about to find a good location to keep the prisoners. Three shifts of 4 hours is set.

Peerimus Jurgen and Trace on the 1st shift.
Savin, Kit and Durgan on the 2nd shift.
Yorrick, Kazak and Kat on the 3rd shift.

Peerimus and Trace will simply be meditating during the 3rd watch and able to move to assist if need be. Peerimus will be outdoors the entire night and will be in the form of a great brown bear.

During dinner, the initial plans for meeting the giants is discussed (check email folks). "I would like to send an envoy initially."

Peerimus will also spend more time speaking with the prisoners. Where they were coming from, heading to, why they were on the move in the first place and if Hook City and the Legion of Fist had anything part in any of it. He would also speak to Feyr of the pack he claims to have so much influence with. The pack is with the giants, but on a volunteer basis he now understands. So would they be camped with the giants? Peerimus wishes to know much more of how the relationship works and how it came to be. If the Dame does not control the wolves and Feyr claims to have great influence, "Can it be surmised Feyr that you are the alpha male of the pack?"

Sleeping with the Enemy [DM BrianZ]
Wednesday March 26th, 2008 5:32:01 PM

As the group headed out, Trace ran back to town, and picked up his Catacombs order from the general store. He caught up with the group two hours later, thanks to his tracking skills. (OOC- because you asked nice)

While traveling, Jurgen tries to assure Savin that he is fine. The monk doesn't quite believe him, deciding instead to prepare for the worst, 'just in case'.

Jurgen- greater magic weapon still active, other spells expired.

The twins seem to be very good at scouting, and also good cooks. The group sets up a campsite, and Firn'gaer provides a comfy magical place to rest. Watches are set, and Peerimus is happy with the location of the campsite.

New questions are posed to the prisoners. Grummpk answers about the orcs. "Always on da move orcs are. We don't have no fancy walls an houses like da humies. Orcs an giants, only keep what they can take. An sometimes a bigger group of orcs or giants comes along and bashes a few 'eads around and tells ya to leave. So's ya leave. Dey took all our food so da Dame wanted us to get some more. We is gunna go someplace quieter, with no uvver tribes to bash our heads around."

Feyr looks at the druid with a hint of distaste. "You surmise much human. Yes, I am the pack leader. And since you killed off most of the other adult males, my place is assured for some time to come. The other wolves will be in the camp. When we get close, I will draw them out and we will leave. After that, the giants are all yours."

The dwarf brothers take the last watch till sunrise. It is morning.

Smiling as he eyes Kit preparing breakfast .... Kazak wanders over " smells good ....no sense in letting all that work go to waste " as the warrior grabs a plate of food " .... i'm starting to like you more and more " chuckles the dwarf as he rubs his midsection

Jurgen [132/132 HP]
Thursday March 27th, 2008 5:22:17 AM

Talking with the Prisoners reveals more information that makes Jurgen uneasy about the whole business of simply slaughtering the tribe. He didn't like the way they went about acquiring their goods, but he also didn't like that it seemed they had few other options at their disposal. As for Feyr... the wolf made Jurgen uneasy, but that was a matter that would be dealt with later on...

When he wakes up, Jurgen wanders a few minutes away from the cabin and the Children in order to ready himself for the day ahead. Shortly after he begins his meditation, he finds his thoughts wandering to his new powers. And he whipers a thankful prayer to the Crones and to Domi. He asks for help in the negotiations that were sure to come as well as strength in case his sword was needed. He also refreshes the Greater Magic Weapon spell with his Rod of Extend Spell. Before he returns to the fire, he spend another few minutes shadow-fighting with his sword, wondering how he had gone into battle without it.

When he returns, he enjoys the well-prepared food. "Excellent. I'm ready to hit the trail again. Although let's talk as we go, Firn'gaer, I do have some ideas about solving our little envoy problem... (See email)"

Savin
Thursday March 27th, 2008 8:19:55 AM

Savin wakes to the smell of food cooking and sighs to himself. He used to be the cook. He used to be the scout. With all of these new members, his role has changed.

He looks up to see Jurgen/doppleganger refreshing the spells on his sword and his eyes narrow in distrust. Can dopplegangers do spells? Was the creature reading his mind right now?

Savin moves away to where he could watch Jurgen and starts performing his morning kata with his usual power and grace. While his body is flowing his mind still seems troubled.

Once he is finished he will wander over to the cook fires and take a plate of food. After sampling it, he nods at its taste and says, "Kit, this is good. Did you have formal training?"

Savin looks over to Peerimus and says, "I think I should be your envoy. I have the ability to get out quickly if I need to and most of you have better distance spells and weapons to back me up if I need it." Savin clenches a fist and continues. "I need to be in close unfortunately. If I do go, is it possible to buff me up a little? Cat's grace would be nice and possibly a tonges spells, so I can communicate effectively."

Peerimus nods to Savin, "There is wisdom in what you say, but we will not be close enough to back you up. If you go and things turn sour. You will have to get all the way back on your own. It will be several miles. But Sinse I am the one with the scrying I can't be the one to go." The druid then eyes the gnome. "He will need emergency transport. Something far faster than his feet or Dim skills."

Peerimus's eyes glint with a hidden danger, "Do not think us unseeing fools Feyr. We have seen much in our travels and are very adapt at reading our surroundings. You will have your freedom under the sentence of banishment from these lands, but we will parlay with the giants first. You will tell me when we are within an hour of the camp"

Peerimus will then broach the subject of releasing the shaman and the warrior orc back to the orcs with the shaman himself. "My question is would you simply be killed. If so I see no reason to make the offer. If not, your sentence of banishment still stands under pain of death. What say you?"

Regardless of the answer, Peerimus taps Savin and Firngaer to be the olive branch. If their is no other business precisely then let's move out.

Durgan
Thursday March 27th, 2008 10:12:28 PM

Durgan eats breakfast and nods appreciation at the halfling girl. "The quickest way to a dwarf's friendship is through his stomach. I think we will be very good friends."

Day 2 [DM BrianZ]
Thursday March 27th, 2008 10:28:30 PM

The group has breakfast and prepares a few spells. You set out early, using the same formation as the day before. The prisoners seem a bit more relaxed as they are now comfortable that they will not be killed.

Plans are forming for dealing with the orc camp. And questions arise. Many questions. And the most important of all: does this have anything to do with the migration? The prisoners answer once again as best they are able.(or do they?...)

Feyr's snout pulls back in a snarl, but he accepts the druid's commands. "As you wish human."

Grummpk responds with some thought. "No, I dun think we will be killed. The tribe has fewer warriors now, and a shaman is always useful. I'm pretty sure the Dame will not be happy, but won't kill us. I will face my fate."

Drok looks at the shaman as if trying to comprehend something. "What's a fate boss?"

The group sets a good pace again, and Yorrick and Shadow both indicate a good trail by their scent. During the day, you can occasionally catch glimpses of Feyr looking longingly at the halfling girls. He almost looks long enough for you to say something, but not quite. The twins feel decidedly uncomfortable whenever the winter wolf looks at them.

Feyr stops the group a little earlier than yesterday. "This is close enough. Unless you want to risk camping too close to the orcs and giants." He puts his nose into the air. "Can you smell them? Orcstink." Yorrick and Shadow can indeed catch a whiff of something and they both seem a little more restless than they were a few minutes ago.

You estimate three hours to the camp.

Savin
Friday March 28th, 2008 7:49:03 AM

Savin looks at Firn'gaer and asks, "So...how many teleport spells do you have memorized today? I am hoping you have at least 2. These guys liked to dispel magic in the last battle and it could get a bit dicey if we are suddenly surrounded by giants and stuck there."

Savin readies his things and then marches over to the prisoners and asks, "Tell me about the Dame. Was she the mother of any of the giants we killed? Was she family at all?"

Jurgen
Friday March 28th, 2008 12:08:11 PM

"If you're too scared Savin, we can always find someone to take your place." Jurgen grins wickedly at the monk. "But if it really comes down to it, you have abilities at your disposal to help escape. You've the power to match my Dimension Door spell... In fact, that should be your first move if they attack, since it's not actually a spell. Followed shortly by a teleport from Firn'gaer."

During the day, Jurgen keeps a close eye on Feyr. The orcs and giants seemed to be reasonable enough to deal with, but the paladin was beginning to see Trace's point of view on the wolf. If they let the wolfpack roam free, who would fall victim to their hungry teeth? Through is head ran visions of children trying to escape. He is tempted to question the creature further, but he didn't want to give the wolf reason to cause trouble. If he thought he was going to escape, he would be a much more manageable force.

Jurgen spends his watch talking with Drok and Grummpk. He enjoys the duality between the two of them. He has to resist the urge to laugh at some of Drok's statements, including "What's a fate boss?". "Grummpk, do you have any suggestions for dealing with this Dame? Is there anything we shouldn't say? Or, alternatively, should?"

(OOC: "You know something, Tracy? I kinda like that dame...")

(OOC: Honestly there is no need for the STNG reference)

Trace and Shadow
Friday March 28th, 2008 1:55:14 PM

Trace finds a postion to watch over the wolf and orcs for the camp.

Trace thinks to his bow, are the orcs and wolf showing any hidden attempts to escape or undermind our efforts with peace?

Peerimus and Yorrick  d20+28=39 d20+20=32
Sunday March 30th, 2008 1:57:18 PM

Peerimus smiles at Firngaers comment, "Well I was thinking of powerful wizard. Remember you two. Just convey that we wish to speak and get back. I will magically mask your trail leaving here when you are ready." Peerimus will then start looking for a pool for his scrying. [Survival 39 and Wild Empathy 32 for speaking with local animals]

if there is still enough light for them to get there and back Peerimus will cast Pass Without a Trace on them as well as Trace and Shadow.

"Trace, I want you and shadow to go about halfway and set up for them. The rest of us will be here. Remember that we will be returning the Shaman and the orc as the meeting."

Savin
Sunday March 30th, 2008 11:04:15 PM

Savin looks around and then asks, "Does anyone have a backpack they can loan me? A normal one? I was thinking I could cut some leg holes into it and carry Firn'gaer on my back. It would make him much more mobile and maybe include me in some spells?"

Savin looks at Firn'gaer and smirks, "What do you think? Wanna play pony? Is your dignity up to the test?"

The Setup [DM BrianZ]
Sunday March 30th, 2008 11:07:39 PM

OOC- going with the above and also info received in the email chats. If anything is off, please say so. Also, some char have little to do right now for a post or two unfortunately. Please drop a post even if just to say 'my char is waiting around' or something.

The shaman answers as best he is able. "Not too sure about the family thing. The giants don't usually talk about it in front of us. As for dealing with her, just be careful and show respect. If she thinks you are not taking her seriously, she may attack just to make you respect her. You shlould also watch out for her quick tongue."

Peerimus finds a few helpful birds who can point him to a useful sized pool of water. It is not perfect, but will suffice for the scrying spells.

Trace's bow(sorry forget the name?) seems worried. "I'm not sure dear, but I don't trust them."

The night goes by uneventfully. The prisoners are well-behaved, maybe knowing they will be released soon. In the morning, the group follows its' normal routine with breakfast.

A few preparatory spells are cast.(please list in post) And Savin and Firn'gaer head out to the enemy camp to make contact. Trace follows with Shadow to create a checkpoint. It is roughly a three hour walk to the camp at a normal pace, or less at a brisk pace.

As they approach, Savin and Firn'gaer can see two frost giants standing sentry along with several winter wolves. It is hard to get an exact number as some of them appear to be laying down. They don't seem to have noticed you yet. Spot DC 20 to look: Highlight to display spoiler: { One of the giants appears wounded and may be one of the escapees from the fight. The winter wolves look small, perhaps juveniles. }

Jurgen
Monday March 31st, 2008 3:06:10 PM

Jurgen takes the first watch again. He is not sure whether Trace's bow is being helpful and is frustrated by the magic which he cannot confirm. There was a chance that Feyr was lying, but Jurgen doubted that Drok was even capable of properly stringing the necessary thoughts together to fabricate a story. Next time he was in the Catacombs, he'd have to consider picking up a spell or two that forced the truth. Then again, how often did he think the Children would be interrogating prisoners?

At the shaman's advice, Jurgen simply nods his head. Negotiating with the giant would be similar to negotiating with Marl, a regular problem-causer back when Jurgen was working with the town guard. Except, perhaps, for the quick tongue. These thoughts run through his mind as he practiced his sword forms. While there was a dramatic difference between Jurgen's rapier forms and Savin's kata, the ritual had a similar focusing effect.

He thought about the day ahead and the conversation that was coming with the Dame. Peerimus was probably nervous at the thought of letting Jurgen be the point-man for that. There hadn't been an opportune time for the man to prove his skill at language and debate, but there wasn't really anyone else more qualified than he was. And if Kat'Miara and him worked together, he was fairly certain that the two of them could sooth the most savage of beasts. After he finishes his morning ritual, he approaches the halfling twins with a question.

"Before I go to Peerimus and ask to represent the Children at this meeting, I ask if you Kat," he looks at Kit, clearly confusing the two, "would be willing to join me in those negotiations. It has been some time since I have been in a duel of wits and I would appreciate your help as a most skilled second."

Peerimus and Yorrick  d20+22=38
Monday March 31st, 2008 4:36:28 PM

Before morning Peerimus will inform Jurgen that he could use his assistance at the scrying pool. Namely with a Message sp we could at least talk to them.

Peerimus casts Pass Without a Trace on Savin, Trace and Shadow before they depart. "Mother watch over them." he says quietly to himself as they depart. Turning to the others, he gives a quick direction to the pool where he will be going shortly to scry in. "Jurgen I would like your assistance. Kazak and Durgan, You will have main guard duty. I will have Yorrick assist and I should think Kit and Kat could aid in keeping our prisoners fed and secure for the morning."

Shortly after the 4 leave, Peerimus will go to the pool and scry in on Savin.

The great brown bear picks a comfortable spot near the wolf and orcs and sits down. Impassive deep brown eyes reguard the smaller creatures his friend asked him to guard and more importantly the circle he had indicated was thiers. For everything else was his and until the druid returned and said otherwise, those three creatures were not allowed into his territory. [Handle Animal 38]

Savin  d20+18=32
Monday March 31st, 2008 9:35:42 PM

OOC For some reason my first post didn't take! grrrrrr

Savin takes the spells offered asking on how long they will endure. As they smaller group moves forward, Savin spots the Giant and squats motioning to Firn'gaer to crouch as well, though being short has its advantages!

Savin says to Firn'gaer and the camp via message in a whisper, "We have found their camp!
(spot check 32) Looks like one of the sentries is injured but I don't recognize him. Wonder if he was in our battle or they have been battling others as well.

The wolves look smaller, could be females or younger members of the pack. Looks like we did some damage there."

Savin turns to Firn'gaer and says, "I am unsure how to hail the camp. It might be better if I did it alone behind your wall of force and if they start throwing boulders, you won't be a target and a nice hole card. I will try to talk to the Dame but I don't think it is a good idea for us to enter the camp.

Part of me wants to sneak in and take a look around but I guess we are playing this straight up.

Set your spells, and then I will call."

First Contact [DM BrianZ]
Monday March 31st, 2008 9:51:23 PM

OOC- How's that for a STNG reference Jeff?

Firn'gaer places a wall of force across the path, and Savin steps out, hailing the giants. Instantly on alert, the giants stride forward, demanding to know who is there, and the wolves(10 in all) begin to spread out and advance slowly until bumping into the wall. One of the giants lifts a boulder and makes to throw it, but the other, injured giant, stops him. If you speak giant highlight: Highlight to display spoiler: {I remember you. The quick one. And the other with the fire. You are not attacking? What do you want?" } The giants wait for a response and keep their weapons at the ready. You can sense increased activity at the camp behind them.

Back at your campsite, you await word of the contact. Peerimus has his scrying active, and can see most of the action. Jurgen waits for more detailed info through the message spell.

Durgan, Kazak, and Yorrick guard the prisoners. They seem a bit tense.

Trace and Shadow are in position. His bow suggests moving closer to the action to make sure his friends are ok.

Kit and Kat make themselves useful around the camp, and look for mischief to get into.

Savin
Tuesday April 1st, 2008 8:49:19 AM

Savin holds up his hands and smiles saying in common, "We do not wish battle at this time, only a parlay with your leader called the Dame." Savin point to the injured giant and says, "I think you know of our power. We could have attacked from the trees with powerful magic, steel and fist, but we would prefer information more than blood.

But if attacked we are ready to spill it. It is your choice. Talk or Blood?"

Kit'Miara
Tuesday April 1st, 2008 9:20:28 AM

Kit helps keep the prisoners secure doing her very level best not to taunt them...too much...it would not be helpful to have them mad and not want to answer any more questions. She is pretty happy through the day with troubles seeming to have gone from her mind. When they make camp she helps out wherever she is needed. Her mind wanders as she is doing this and you can see a glint in her eye

Jurgen
Tuesday April 1st, 2008 11:50:21 AM

(OOC: Oh that's it. You've started something now, Brian. It's on... PS: Heya Sheila! George, is it safe to assume that you're including your dialogue with the giants to Jurgen via the message spell?)

Jurgen sits beside Peerimus patiently. Some thought creeps into the back of his mind as he waits to be told what to say. Savin and Firn'gaer were going to tell the giants that the Children wanted a meeting, but nobody had bothered to cast a Tongues spell on Savin. Sure, Firn'gaer could speak any language he desired. But that was just ridiculously poor planning.

Providing that the pool of water is significantly away from the prisoners and that Peerimus allows Jurgen to speak briefly, the paladin will mention a topic that had been bothering him since the day before.

"Do you think I was wrong about the wolf? Watching the way he hungrily eyes the twins... If we let him and his pack roam free, they may honor their word and leave Heranmar, but what of other towns and homes along their path? Kit and Kat may be able to fight off Feyr, but I know children bigger than those halflings that wouldn't stand a chance..."

Kat'Miara
Tuesday April 1st, 2008 11:52:02 AM

Kat helps out as best as she can, doing light chores, and... entertaining the prisoners. At one point, she asks her sister to juggle with her... their kitchen knives.

(If she does, they have _great_ fun doing so.)

Peerimus
Tuesday April 1st, 2008 12:18:04 PM

Peerimus watches the group through the pool casually as they make thier way towards the enemy camp. The Pass without a Trace and Scrying would last the betterr part of the entire day. So for the first few hours he could simply relax and listen to Mothers unending song about him. Jurgen breaks his thoughts and the druid arches an eyebrow at the question. "Why question the wolf alone? The shaman is likely the more powerful and just as dangerous. We took the higher ground, gave compassion and mercy where it would perhaps not been given to us. It is part of hope and I like to think within our nature as heroes. The Feyr and the orcs are not incarnate. They are not demons or undead incapable of naught but evil. They currently choose destruction and death, perhaps our actions will show them a different path. Perhaps once free of us, we will still be with them. Perhaps we can hope Jurgen."

The druid then turns back to the pool and replies, "We sent Firngaer precisely for that reason. I never really thought he would be needed to teleport them out of harms way. He's there because he can talk to them." Seeing Savin step forward the druids brow furrows slightly.

Parlay [DM BrianZ]
Tuesday April 1st, 2008 11:40:50 PM

The giants look confused for a moment. They confer briefly and then one of them sends a winter wolf back into the camp. The injured giant orders the other wolves to stand down. The wolves back off a little, but look ready, with raised hair. The giant with the boulder looks like he'd like to throw it anyway, but manages to restrain himself.

A few tense moments pass, and then the wolf returns from the camp. The wolf approaches and speaks in common to Savin and Firn'gaer. "Dame Jarlsdotter agrees to meet with you. Return when you are ready."

With that the wolf returns to its' companions, and the whole group returns to their guard posts. There seems to be a lot of activity at the camp now.

Peerimus

Peerimus looks at Jurgen, "They did indeed." Peerimus stands and dimisses the scrying. "But the main objective is met. We have our parlay. Now I think we let Feyr go and take his pack and leave our lands. One more wolf against us will make no difference and he knows little of our capabilities that Jarlsdotter does not already know. When Savin and Firngaer return with Trace and Shadow, we let him go." Peerimus takes a deep breath, obviously thinking on other matters at the same time, but not apparently willing to go into them at this point.

The druid walks back to the main camp and smiles as Kat comes into view 'tidying up' He knew little of the halfling culture, actually as he thought on it, he is unsure if he has ever met a halfling before. "Might I ask what you are doing?" Peerimus asks Kat in an amiable tone.

Jurgen
Thursday April 3rd, 2008 11:31:49 AM

Jurgen nods his head at the druid. Quietly, before they return to the group, he asks if he was doing okay. "Peerimus, you seem uneasy. I may not have the keenest eyes, but I do know that that beam of light did not just hit me. If you need to talk..." Jurgen won't press the issue, instead leaving it up to Peerimus whether he wanted to.

"Indeed she is, Grummpk. But at least we've got what we needed." Jurgen helps clean up the remains of their camp and, in relatively short time, is ready to head towards the orc/giant camp.

Thursday April 3rd, 2008 2:58:23 PM

Savin sees that the others seem somehow disappointed in the way things have turned out. He says, "We still can go to neutral ground. I have no intention of just marching into her camp. We can ask that she comes out halfway to met us which should foil most traps."

Savin makes sure that none of the prisoners are around to hear the next and says, "Why don't we send our halfling siblings on ahead to spy out the land, get in good ambush spots and see if they are setting traps? We can put trace into the trees with his bow, as well as Firn'gaer who can cover us with spells. Send a smaller group to parlay with her...Peerimus, the dwarf brothers, Jurgen and myself. The others can cover us and we as a group should be able to handle their group if they attack. At least long enough to make an escape.

If the wolves really leave, then they won't have their sense of scent. Should be easier to have Kit and Kat get close."

Kat'Miara
Thursday April 3rd, 2008 4:11:46 PM

Following her sister towards where they hid their packs, she follows suit, wishing she had a little more time to -explore- the camp, and their prisoners.

Kazak
Thursday April 3rd, 2008 8:15:22 PM

Listening to the discussion the dwarf adds a few words " well i say we all stick together ....you all witnessed what happened last time .... we all seperated and they were able to exploit that ... so i say all of us go "

The dwarven warrior double checks his equipment as they prepare to meet the giants .

With a look at the winter wolf " right Peerimus ... one less ally for the big stompers to use againist us ... so the wolves take their leave and keep their distance from this area for a long time "

Preparation [DM BrianZ]
Thursday April 3rd, 2008 9:40:42 PM

OOC- I don't want to assume too much. Please give me a consensus by email or here on the plan for going to the camp.

The halfling twins try to keep themselves busy, exploring the camp, the prisoners(?), and surrounding area. They don't find too much. Maybe there will be more entertainment at the orc/giant camp?

Most seem to be in agreement to let Feyr go now, and then stick together to go to the camp. Savin's dissenting voice however urges caution and may have merit.

As everyone has gathered at the cleaned up campsite, it is time to decide.

Durgan

I assume it is still up to Peerimus untill we are in combat rounds, but let me make it clear this time. If combat comes again, magic users for the them are priority, all effort will be made to rid that threat first, any formal combat enemy will fall quicker with out the help of magic on its side. Trace uses this time to bring himself and Shadow back to full health.

Jurgen
Friday April 4th, 2008 10:21:29 AM

Jurgen heads out with the rest of the Children, unusually quiet. If the opportunity presents itself, he'll ask Peerimus what the diplomatic plan was.

(Essays. Bleh! See you on the other side of this weekend!)

Peerimus
Friday April 4th, 2008 8:52:51 PM

Peerimus understands the direction Savin is thinking, but agrees with the others. "We go in as a full unit. No one invisible, no hints at trying to set our own ambush. Firngaer will instantly see any invisible opponent within, What 60'?" he poses to the wizard. "We cut Feyr loose now. We don't leave until the morning."

"Come let us discuss how it is precisely that we want to handle this. I believe if this is a trap we immediately exit the area. Circling the wagons in the middle of their camp seems a poor combat stratedgy. An hour out of the camp we will cast any defensive spells that will last long enough. We will then see what Jarlsdotter has to say."

Savin
Friday April 4th, 2008 10:35:31 PM

Savin looks almost stricken, "OK I can see going in as a unit. It shows our power and resolve but actually entering their camp is just plain stupidity. At least stop in the fields before the main camp. It will give us better visuals and help eliminate the possiblity of traps.

Besides just wallking into their camp sends the wrong message. Almost like we are pleading our case to them. They should at least partially come to us."

Plans [DM BrianZ]
Saturday April 5th, 2008 9:31:39 AM

OOC- I will give everyone the weekend to 'plan' for the camp, then I will move this along.

So far I am seeing:
-go as a group
-cast some defensive buffs before you get there
-let Feyr go

Peerimus
Saturday April 5th, 2008 5:17:09 PM

"Savin, quite right. No we will not be entering the camp. I mispoke. No we will arrive and invite them to a discussion. We are not asking for Jarlsdotter to grant us an audience and it would be a mistake to appear to be doing that."

The Meeting [DM BrianZ]
Sunday April 6th, 2008 4:32:34 PM

The group sets out for the orc camp. Along the way, Shay is set to flying above. he reports no activity away from the camp. Trace's bow gives off feelings of anticipation. If things turn sour the bow is ready, and maybe even eager.

As you get closer, Feyr becomes more and more agitated. He shows his teeth at the slightest woodland noise and growls in frustration several times.

You stop just outside of eyesight of the camp. And you let Feyr go. He is surprised and doesn't leave right away. Finally he turns and begins to trot away at an angle slightly towards the camp. He turns and looks at you. "I didn't really think you'd let me go", he growls. "I shall think on this. I will uphold my words to you. No human settlement shall feel our teeth as long as I lead the pack." He turns and runs off a short way to the top of a nearby rise. On the top of the small hill, he throws his head into the air and howls. It sends a chill down your spine. Soon, there are answering howls and the sound of many creatures running through the forest. The pack runs to him and goes up and over the hill, disappearing on the other side. You can tell by their size there are many young and none as large as Feyr. As the last of them go, Feyr takes one last look at the group and then is gone.

You are close to the camp. Everyone places spells on themselves. Hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. You begin to move towards the camp again when a frost giant appears. He expresses no surprise to see you and indicates he was seeing what the wolves were doing. He moves to lead you back to the camp when the group firmly tells him they will meet someplace more neutral. He frowns. "Dame Jarlsdottr will not be pleased. But I will get her." He points to a nearby clearing. "Will that do?" He then marches off to the camp.

You examine the clearing carefully and determine there is nothing special about it. No traps or ambush points are present. Shortly you can hear some loud voices coming from the camp and then a great deal of commotion. Grummpk indicates she should be here soon. And indeed shortly thereafter she strides into view. There is no mistaking that she is in charge with her finery and well dressed. She carries a staff, and to Firn'gaer's sight has some magic about her. Kn Arcana DC30 to look: Highlight to display spoiler: { The staff is a staff of charming.} She is obviuosly agitated and appears to be in an unfriendly mood. A number of frost giant warriors follow her and take up positions at the edge of the clearing. They are armed and ready, but clearly inferior warriors to those you have already fought. They also have several magic auras about them. Behind them come about sixty orcs. Mostly women and nearly adult children. Maybe one in ten is an adult male warrior. The adult women are armed though. (and they seem rather foul-tempered)

The Dame walks right up to you with confidence. She walks among you as if to evaluate who she is talking to. Several times she moves purposely to force you to move out of the way or have her run into you. Simple intimidation tactics. Seeing that you are not easily intimidated or impressed, she backs off a bit to stand in front of her warriors. The orcs spread out and you can hear some of them murmuring about where did the winter wolves go.

The Dame then addresses you. "So. You have come here seeking me. And you have come to say something and not merely fight or you would have attacked already. So. What do you want?" She seems irritated and may very well order her warriors to attack.

OOC notes:
Please list all active spells in post. Please note that any visible active spells may annoy her to the point of attacking.

Kazak
Sunday April 6th, 2008 11:33:19 PM

Trekking towards the giant camp the dwarven warrior keeps his eyes on the trio of prisoners
....
" if ya keep ya word it will also cause me to think on that too" growls Kazak to the winter wolf "hope ya lead for a long time then "

As the meeting place is arranged Kazak heads towards the clearing .... taking up a defensive position he keeps near Durgan and the mighty Yorrick.

Kazak stands firm in his tracks ...no weapons drawn but his swords of steel and stone sheathed but visible on his back ... awaiting the discussion that is to follow

Kit'Miara
Monday April 7th, 2008 1:50:48 PM

Kit is shocked that the wolf has kept its word but is happy all the same about it. Her face changes as the Dame comes to meet them though and she puts up a brave front, little though she is. She chooses not to say anything as she is not usually very diplomatic and the only things going through her head are going to get them into trouble, jokes about how ugly she is and whatnot.

Peerimus and Yorrick  d20+18=20 d20+10=24
Monday April 7th, 2008 2:13:20 PM

Peerimus nods once to Feyr as the wolf speaks of not returning to the human lands. There was little to say that would not sound precotious. HIs heart hoped the wolf would instill the lessons upon the younger of the pack. A small stone thrown from a mountain...

When the giant leaves to inform Jarlsdotter of the smal change in plan, Peerimus immediately turns to Jurgen. "Message spell if you please." Everyone please remember when you whipser your lips move so only use the spell when you need to."

Peerimus enters the clearing and moves with Yorrick to what would be the far part of the clearing from the giant camp. He then waits, all of his spells having been cast about an hour ago and being able to last more than an hour more. To his right is Yorrick and he asks Savin to stand at his immediate left. The rest of the group to stand even up on the right and left of them. In the charge of Kazak and Durgan will stand the two orcs.

The Dame strides in, The druid quickly notes the staff. He has been about wizards and staves for some time and he himself owns a special staff. Odds are it is not a walking stick. Yorrick is kept at bay, though the grizzly bears his fangs stands when the giant becomes too close. [Handle Animal 20]

The druid is almost thankful for the straight forward address. While the Chaos light had indeed wrought considerable change in him, ripping away his deeper wilder instincts and replacing it with greater understanding and compassion, he was not looking forward to his first diplomatic test. Peerimus lifts his chin slightly and speaks, "We want you to pass through our lands peacfully first and foremost." He pauses a moment to let it sink in.

"We also wish to exchange two prisoners of the battle for information about your people. Lastly we wish to speak of reconciliation for damages to our land and people and of the possiblility of a lasting peace and possible trade between us."

A long shot, but worth it. She will not attack for it, at worse Peerimus believes she will be indignantly angry.

Savin is also surprised when the Winter Wolf leaves with his companions. He nods to Jurgen and smiles saying, "Well what do you know. Maybe you were right. Or maybe we scared the fur out of them but either way we aren't going to fight today at least."

When the "Dame" starts moving towards them, Savin stands where Peerimus directs him and says, "Beat she is pissed off at the loss of an allie or vassal. Let her bluster but don't show weakness."

Savin then remains quiet allowing Peerimus to take the lead in the negotiations, but is ready to defend his friends if it comes down to it.

He will scan the woods and keep an general eye and ear out for trouble.

Jurgen  d20+18=35
Monday April 7th, 2008 7:51:23 PM

Jurgen does as Peerimus asks and activates a message spell between the group, although he doesn't have anything he wants to cast. If this turned into a fight, there would be more than enough time to prepare for battle.

"Every now and then, I get lucky," the paladin grins and nods to Savin. "As for this message spell, Peerimus is right. Don't use it unless it is absolutely necessary. If the Dame thinks that we're not honoring her authority... Well, I don't want you all to have to pick me up again."

He then takes a position next to Savin. While the druid would be doing much of the talking, the Jurgen would likely have an addition to mention. When he sees the Dame he notes the staff, although doesn't bother trying to identify it. Jurgen didn't have the eyes to determine it's markings nor the memory to recall what those markings meant. Firn'gaer, of course, probably knew the moment he'd seen it.

As Peerimus speaks, Jurgen resists the urge to pipe up. He wasn't sure why the druid felt the need to be the voice of the negotiations, especially considering it was one of Jurgen's specialties. Instead, he stands very still while focusing on the conversation. He doesn't even consider placing his hand near his sword. When he needed it, he could get it. Until then, no need to look as if he desired violence. No need to look as if he desired anything but a quick resolution to this situation.

Dame Jarlsdottr [DM BrianZ]
Monday April 7th, 2008 10:27:32 PM

The Dame seems unpleasant but at least willing to talk. "Pass through peacefully...", she muses. "I believe that is what we were attempting to do when your people attacked and killed most of my warriors. Unless I am mistaken, none of the townspeople were killed in our attempt to pick up supplies."

Jarlsdottr glares at the shaman, obviously displeased he allowed himself to be captured. "Grummpk is of some minor use to me. The warrior I care not for, but I suppose I will take them both. I may be willing to exchange information for them.

"Damages to your land and people you say? I know of no such damages. What of the damages to me? First we will speak of compensation for my lost warriors."

"Trade is possible. But what would you have to offer us? And what would you want? I'm sure I could set the orcs to making things. They work quite well when whipped for most of the day."

"As for peace, we will see."

Peerimus and Yorrick  d20+10=11
Tuesday April 8th, 2008 1:59:34 PM

At least things are proceeding as anticipated. the druid thinks. She baited him, all of them and hopefully his companions would not bite on the hook. Peerimus turns towards Durgan and Kazak and nods to the dwarves. "They can go." he then turned back. "Dame Jarlsdotter, our interest in your people involves the interest of ours. The information which interests us is why you have left your homes and what is your intended destination. The warmer climb of our forests and coast can hardly be accomodating to you and yours."

The other subjects peerimus thinks may be better pursued after more easily broached topics are fully weighed. He will though continue on what he percieves as the other safe subject. "For trade we have food in the great abundance of what the sea provides. We also have craftsmen and artisans for the finer things of clothing and jewelry. We can barter or more directly, silver and gold could be used."

Savin  d20+7=17
Tuesday April 8th, 2008 5:28:49 PM

Savin looks at the Dame steps forward and bows, saying, "We have heard rumor to a great migration. Are you part of it? We are the protectors for this land and its people. We have sworn to look after its inhabitants. If more migrating peoples are coming through soon, it would be good to know.

We found some of our charges prisoner in their own home, with property destroyed. We moved to protect them, as I am sure you would have done if it happened to you. If it was a mistake, you have our apologies, but if your people came openly to us, I believe it could have been averted.

We have tended the wounds of some of your people and return them to you as a show of our good faith. We are willing to assit you in getting supplies without stirring up the local populance. Hopefully this shows you our goodwill.

We just want to know your intentions. Are you planning on staying in this area? If so, we would prefer peacable neighbors whom we could work with to better all of our lives. If you are moving on, then can we trade some goods to you to help with that?"

Diplomacy 17

Jurgen
Tuesday April 8th, 2008 6:04:42 PM

Jurgen prepares a response to the giant and then drops it when Savin speaks. The monk covered the main points. As for the Dame herself... he didn't know what to think. Either she was a good leader in a weak position trying to come off as strong or she was slightly crazed. Perhaps both.

Time might tell.

Firn'gaer
Tuesday April 8th, 2008 10:08:07 PM

Firn'gaer for the most part is watching the area for anything his magically enhanced vision can see. If things need to be translated he will do his best to do so to the others, but only if needed.

Negotiations [DM BrianZ]
Tuesday April 8th, 2008 11:07:37 PM

OOC- If not mentioned earlier, the Dame speaks common well. Also, for those who do not want to risk angering the giants, please post via the message spell to others if you want to stay involved.

Firn'gaer does not notice any magic auras he has not already seen. There is no obvious spellcasting either.

Durgan and Kazak release the orcs. Drok seems unaware of the events transpiring around him. "Ummm what's goin on boss? Is the Dame gonna be mad?" The shaman is silent. He seems relieved the Dame is not punishing him right there.

"I know nothing of any migration", the Dame says. "There is unrest among the tribes, and I felt needless conflict was foolish for my goals. We will indeed be heading towards colder climates. The unending rainy swamp you call home does not appeal to frost giants."

"I find it unlikely the orcs will be able to trade peacefully for long. I will agree to a single exchange. We need food and other mundane supplies. We will be able to exchange precious metals and gems for such. Uncut and not minted. Such as we find in the mountains. The shaman you have just released to me will handle the details." Grummpk seems a bit paler at the announcement, but nods his head in agreement.

The Dame seems less hostile to you. However her warriors stand tense and ready. Maybe they have orders?...

Durgan
Tuesday April 8th, 2008 11:10:02 PM

Durgan releases the hostages. He restrains himself from kicking them. He restrains from saying something foolish. Orcs were ancient enemies. Hated by dwarves and rightfully so. Durgan was not overly happy about this and it shows on his face.

Kazak
Tuesday April 8th, 2008 11:42:23 PM

The dwarf listens as the Dame has her say ....
he stays calm .... in front of the restless giants.

"I hope Durgan don't whack dem when dey leave " prays Kazak ..... beathing a sigh of relief when he doesn't "sigh "

Noticing the shamans paler complexion as the Dame volunteers him for trade talks .

Kat'Miara
Wednesday April 9th, 2008 12:15:02 AM

keeping back, she curiously eyes each charater, almost staring, as if she was memorizing what each beng was carrying, and likely to be carrying.

Peerimus and Yorrick
Wednesday April 9th, 2008 3:28:05 PM

Peerimus does not bat an eye when Savin speaks up. He knew one of them would and he was more than ok with it. His role of leader had never and did not still sit well with him. But it would be a burden he would and could carry for as long as the others needed him to. His mid started to drift and then he reeled it back in. Peerimus nods in acceptance of the trade proposed. "We will deal directly with Grummpk then and he with us in that matter."

Peerimus then continues, "Dame Jarlsdotter. This land is our home and out of respect to us I would ask you respect it as well. Would you elaborate on the unrest of the other tribes. I do not relish the thought of a large scale tribal war on my borders. To your continued course I would need to know your intended destination to orchestrate safe conduct to it. There are many inhabitants of the lands you cross with ill informed minds as to your intentions and thier reactions to a giants and orc warrior could be unfortunate. We would see this not happen, but will need your aid in making it a reality."

Jurgen
Wednesday April 9th, 2008 7:53:56 PM

Jurgen continues to stand at attention. He could probably match the Dame's warriors in readiness. While they were tense, he wasn't. The situation wasn't coming to violence now. And Heranmar was probably going to benefit from the trade with the giants. All was well.

Response [DM BrianZ]
Wednesday April 9th, 2008 9:57:21 PM

Dame Jarlsdottr responds. "The unrest? Probably just a few chieftans rubbing shoulders. One of them was bound to get riled up and pick on the neighbors. You needn't worry about the human towns. The tribes will not bother with them."

"As to our destination, I won't know till we get there. Away from dueling tribes and fearful humans for sure."

"Now let's move onto some important matters. I notice Feyr left with his people. Between that and the warriors you destroyed, we are severely weakened. If we are to survive the attacks of other tribes we will need compensation."

"I suggest that your group serves us as personal bodyguards until we reach our new home. There is the matter of an unfriendly tribe between here and there. Care to take them out for me?"

Savin
Wednesday April 9th, 2008 10:23:22 PM

Savin almost sputtering says, "Excuse me but you want us to escort you on your journey, protecting you from your own kind, while risking our own lives as compensation for your people coming onto our lands and assualting our charges.

Then you want us to act as mercanaries and knock off a rival tribe so you have an easier time of it. A tribe who has caused us no harm? A strong tribe that threatens yours?"

Savin turns and eyes Peerimus but directs his question to the frost giant, "Why do we want to do this?"

Kazak
Wednesday April 9th, 2008 11:03:50 PM

The dwarf eyes widen slightly as the Dame wants them to escort and defend them on their journey to find a new home .

" They just attacked us and now they want us to protect them ??"thinks the warrior

Kazak just nods in agreement with Savins reply

Kit'Miara
Thursday April 10th, 2008 12:20:38 AM

Open mouthed shocked registers on the little halflings face as she hears the request. Thinking to herself of all the orcs that have tried to kill them she is not wanting at all to help this one out.

Kat'Miara
Thursday April 10th, 2008 9:28:46 AM

Smiling to herself, she chuckles inwardly, at the picture painted in her head.

A group of halflings defending the big bad giants and orcs from other giants and orcs. What silliness!

Looking at her sister's shocked face, she quickly covers up her smile, though her sister sees it, and the twinkle of suppressed laughter in her eye...

Peerimus
Thursday April 10th, 2008 12:26:00 PM

Peerimus wrinkles his nose and twists his staff into the ground a couple small turns. The druid turns partially to look at Savin. "We wouldn't of course." he answers. He looks back to Dame Jarlsdotter. "If you wish to survive, I would suggest seeking alternatives to violence. I would also suggest being more forthright. If you know a tribe opposed to you stands between you and your destination." He pauses to allow the rest of the statement to become predictable before continuing. "Then you know the destination. Our goals Dame Jarlsdotter, lie in the same direction for now. Tell me of this other tribe and your destination and we can continue this journey together." He ends the statement there, seeing no need to carry the thought further aloud. The giant knew precisely what he meant, he was quite sure.

Kit'Miara
Thursday April 10th, 2008 1:50:15 PM

Seeing the glint in her sisters eye she wonders what she might be thinking. She still keeps her mouth shut the best she can and does her best to listen attentively but her mind wanders easily

Firn'gaer
Thursday April 10th, 2008 2:53:34 PM

Escort the orcs and giants . . . He ponders the thought.

Message spell:
It would be the simplest way to 'compensate' them. Justified or not in her beliefs, our presence, as escort or watchdogs, would prevent the exact trouble we are warning her against initiating. It wouldn't be the first distasteful thing we've had to do, and it would accomplish our goals. Besides the mere fact she appeared so willing to except trade without so much of a boast to giant power indicates that our first encounter with them did in fact diminish the strongest of their ranks, and it's that strength she seeks to exploit as much as we wish to avoid confrontation. I would prefer peaceful solution as opposed to another face-to-face meeting with Gargul.

As far as I know, none of us have much else to do at the moment. The journey might loosen her tongue about things that coupled with what we know would give us more information about what is to come. End of Message.

Trace and Shadow
Thursday April 10th, 2008 3:27:03 PM

Trace whispers to the others, the problem is, that the rivial group that we are to protect them from dosent know of our power and it will most assuredly end up in a fight. Unless we can contact the other tribe before we arrive and maybe buy our way past them, I dont see a way around another fight.

Jurgen
Thursday April 10th, 2008 4:14:44 PM

As Jurgen catches Firn'gaer's words, he wonders whether he agrees. Before he fully fleshes out his own response, he passes Firn'gaer's main idea on. "Firn'gaer reminds us that if we did escort them, we could place a closer eye on them than from here. I'm with Trace, though, in that there would most definitely be another fight on our hands with that route..." He covers his mouth for the next bit. "But there is the thought that the Dame is setting us up to leave Heranmar unprotected. Even if she is not, her word that the other tribes will not bother seems to hardly mean anything. After all, she decided to..."

"Dame, there is a delicate balance of power in this area. And while you say that our lands our currently safe from the various tribes, do you believe it would stay that way were we to be seen as your protectors?" He figured that posing the question to her would be seen as a sign of respect. Although Jurgen highly doubted that the Dame looked upon the Children with anything but contempt.

Savin "illegal post"
Thursday April 10th, 2008 7:27:04 PM

Savin will start coughing and turn his back on the others using the opportunity to whisper via the message, "We also need to be cautious this isn't a trap. This other tribe could be her ally and not her enemy. She could be looking for some revenge."

Indecent Proposal [DM BrianZ]
Thursday April 10th, 2008 10:46:34 PM

Jarlsdottr sighs. "Very well. We will travel around the other group instead of fighting them. You know, I am actually disappointed. Considering how you slaughtered my warriors, I thought you might like to fight?"

"No matter. There are other means of restitution. In order to help us survive, my shamans could use some extra firepower. None of them are very skilled at making scrolls. I propose that you deliver a number of useful combat scrolls for my shamans to use. This would be for our defense, and help us to defend against any attacks from other tribes. What do you say?"

Durgan
Thursday April 10th, 2008 10:50:18 PM

Durgan clutches his axe so tightly his knuckles turn white. "Magic? Destructive magic? The only thing I find more distasteful than orcs is orcs using destructive magic." Durgan seems as though he would prefer using the dwarven method of diplomacy with orcs.

Kazak smiles at the Dame's audacity " she's pushy that one ... make a good salesmen for sure " muses the dwarf with a big grin

" i agree ... a peaceful solution would be best " replys Kazak (in message spell) as he peers over at the female and younger orcs " no honor in killing that mob

Through the message spell "I agree that peace is the best way to go. If we really have to escort them to keep everyone safe then lets do it, however if we can get them these scrolls then maybe that will be the end of it"

[giggling] I just kept picturing little ole us, protecting the big nasty giants from other big nasty giants... kind of like ants protecting rabbits from other rabbits!!

Savin
Friday April 11th, 2008 10:03:33 PM

Savin is waiting...waiting for someone to speak out against this latest demand. Someone to scoff, someone to break out laughing. Make them scrolls....

Savin keeps glancing at Peerimus waiting for him to say something. Finally Savin steps forward, "Jarldottr, I don't think you understand our position. We don't mind selling you food so you can keep moving back towards your homeland. We would rather sell it to you so you don't in desperation harm any innocents but don't think we feel we owe it to you. Your people with or without your permission attacked a farm and its inhabitant who were under our protection. We stepped forward and you are now without a few of your warriors. I don't think you would pay reparations if the situation was reversed.

We want you gone from our lands... peacefully. We also wanted to know what drove you into our lands in the first place. Anything that could drive such a powerful force as yours deserves our attention. Now if you have some information on this, then maybe a deal could be brokered." Savin holds up a hand and continues, "Better information than a couple of tribes started flexing their muscles. Otherwise a wagon or two of food for some gold or gems will be all the aid you will be getting."

Jurgen  d20+7=25 d20+18=30
Saturday April 12th, 2008 4:32:12 PM

Jurgen waits with Savin for someone to laugh at the outragousness of this situation. The voice of Kat is enough to make the paladin smile. When Savin steps forward, Jurgen nods. Some sense would have to be imbued upon the giant. And most of what Savin says is exactly what Jurgen would have said. "Friends, I believe a different tactic is necessary. Peerimus, I am going to attempt to tell her what she is going to do. Stop me if you think that's a bad idea."

(OOC: At this point, if Peerimus (or any of the Children) steps in, Jurgen will be quiet. And he won't say this if Savin's words have an effect on her. I'm starting to think that the Dame is stringing us along. Anyone agree?)

"We came to you, weapons sheathed, as an act of kindness. But do not confuse our generosity for a position of weakness. We are here because we wished to stop the shed of blood. Both yours and our own. But don't doubt for a moment our willingness to do so, if necessary." He doesn't stop to let that sink in, but moves on quickly, deciding that the delicate words were having no effect.

[Intimidate Check - DC 25. Diplomacy Check - DC 30.]

"Let us tell you what is going to happen. You are going to further think on whether you have anything to tell us other than the regular ongoings of a few tribes. We will negotiate with Grummpk regarding trade, to see if we cannot get your people some food. If we decide it is in Heranmar's best interest to strike a one time deal with you, we will do so. Your people will be preparing to leave our lands. And if you do all of this to our satisfaction, we may be generous enough to give you a few scrolls to help defend yourself against any tribes which you choose not to avoid on your way."

Peerimus and Yorrick  d20+24=30
Sunday April 13th, 2008 4:19:38 PM

Peerimus's head is starting to hurt. Obtruse posturing He hears the relays through the Message spell and the fact that the Dame was speaking as she was, Savin catches his eye and Peerimus nods. He had seen other negotiations. hard lines came from outside the leadership often. Jurgen and Savin could operate as those influences here. As both step forward to put teh Dame in her place, Peerimus simply stands. Staff in his right hand and with a near imperceptable sound to his left, Yorrick takes a few steps forward.

Peerimus regards the giants and then simply states, "Your Answer then."

Dame Jarlsdottr's posture stiffens as she regards the adventurers. The scowl on her face speaks volumes on her disposition on this matter. Her warriors seem to be inching forward, even as Yorrick does. This is it, the moment when the negotiation either succeeds or fails.

"I see. I have given the information you asked for and this is how you respond. With thinly veiled threats. So be it. We will live or die on our own, as we were expecting to anyway."

"We still need the food at least, so I will leave the arrangements with Grummpk. Good day."

The Dame turns and walks back to the encampment with her frost giant warriors following, and the orcs going last. As the last of the orcs disappears from view, Grummpk breathes a sigh of relief. "Well, that went pretty well. The last group I saw her 'negotiate' with ended up on their dinner plates."

Grummpk hurriedly relays the list of goods needed, expecting to be called back to the camp shortly. "I would expect her to keep her word on paying for the food. The needs are simple. As much food as you can fit onto two wagons. Climbing gear, rope and grappling hooks. For when the giants climb places my orcs cannot easily go. And a good sized pile of metal tools. That's it."

Grummpk waits nervously to confirm that you will deliver the supplies. "Get the supplies here as quickly as possible. The Dame is not a patient woman."

Savin
Sunday April 13th, 2008 10:02:02 PM

Savin looks over to Firn'gaer and says, "Maybe you should teleport back to town and start organizing a couple wagon loads of foodstuffs. The rest of us can pull back to the farm and meet you there if that makes sense."

Savin looks at Peerimus and says, "What do you think?"

Trace and Shadow
Sunday April 13th, 2008 11:02:51 PM

Trace cracks his neck, all the tension in the air was a bit much. This is one I'll have to write down for later to read. Negoations with a Frost giant leader and a tongue lashing too boot with no blood shed.

Trace moves back to the farm with the others. "What next?" Also I was thinking that Hernamar needs watch towers like in the human territories up North. They set big camp fires for signals to be seen from miles around. They dont need to be that big of a distance but maybe put some up by near by farms so that when intruders come they have a bit of advance warning on the arrival. Also maybe a magical means of calling for help in the future when we are way off in the middle of nowhere we can teleport back in time of dire need. You know like when Ms Marshals cat is up in the tree.

Kazak
Sunday April 13th, 2008 11:32:58 PM

Kazak smiles as the frost giants leave " she's smarter then she looks ... sheknew knew when to walk away " growls the dwarf

"Watch towers ? .... something to think about
.... a little obtrusive but possibly if we can blend them into the enviroment"

"Yeah i agree Savin .... setting up at the farm is a good idea ... less walking " grins Kazak

Firn'gaer
Monday April 14th, 2008 12:15:56 PM

"Sounds good. I'll start collecting foodstuff and other things for trade." He says in response to Savin.

[On a side note: I have law school finals this week. I will try to post as much as I can, but if someone can take him over for the week I would appreciate it. I have him on google docs. Let me know. Thanks]

Peerimus and Yorrick
Monday April 14th, 2008 1:38:31 PM

Peerimus raises an eyebrow, obviously the giant version of details and his were vastly different. No matter. "Very well then." Peerimus holds the group stand firm until the orcs depart. "Let us be on our way then as well. Firngaer go ahead and start working on the supplies. The farm would make for a good initial rallying point. We will need to move the suplies much closer to here though once gathered for the actual exchange." Before Firngaer exits, Peerimus will mention that wagons and animals to pull them will be needed.

He nods at Trace's mention of the towers. "A fine idea and something as Kazak said to think about. As to the Dame's patience," Peerimus stops himself with a calming breath as he feels his voice rising towards Grummpk. "Assuming she is not a complete idiot, she will know that such a thing will take several days. Thankfully stubborness and stupidity are not necessarily matching traits the druid thinks. The question now becomes escorting them through the human lands. Hard to do when you don't know the destination. Colder Climate indeed Peerimus wills himself off of that particular subject, it would simply give him a headache.

"Grummpk, I plan to make the final transaction of the supplies to you at the camp we have made. The one about 3 hours from here. You and whomever you need to bring to then take the supplies back to your own camp. Expect the mules and wagons to be included in the purcahse. I will assure you can find it from the giant camp. 4 days from now. If nothing else then?"

Do we need to get items to prepare for cold?

Jurgen
Monday April 14th, 2008 4:32:26 PM

Jurgen watches as Jarlsdottr walks away and tilts his head ever so slightly. "Did... that just... Did we just get told off by a frost giant for not helping her kill other frost giants?" A shrug of his shoulders is his response and he smiles at the group. "Well done everyone. I kind of expected there to be at least some violence."

As Peerimus and Grummpk do their negotiating (which was much nicer than dealing with the Dame), Jurgen mutters quietly to the others. "Did she really expect us to escort her tribe? I can't decide if she is brilliant or insane. When we have a few hours, I think I should head to Hook City and see if we can't find a few researchers to get us some more information on the Migration. And maybe the rest of that prophesy too. And we need to send word that the centaurs are traveling through these lands and that they are to be left alone. In the time it takes us to get these goods together, we should have planned a route for the giants to take as well as sent messengers to the areas where the taurs may end up. Not to mention informing the Mailed Fist about what happened, unless anyone deems that unnecessary."

[Good luck Richard! I'm heading into exams too, so I won't be able to take over. Sorry :(]

Grummpk agrees that would be a good spot for the exchange. "I believe I can stall her for that long. Maybe even a week."

The group watches Jarlsdottr go, not sure if they just won or lost. The group moves out, with Firn'gaer teleporting back to town. (Was anyone going with him? or the whole group?)

Questions arise once again regarding the Migration. It is suggested that some research could be in order. In the meantime, the current crises appears to be over.

OOC- Please post whether teleporting back to town or walking.

"I've no pressing business, so I don't mind walking back. You folk all know the townspeople better than I do anyway and would have an easier time setting up the trade deal." Jurgen gives a wave to those who are teleporting and starts the long trek back to Heranmar.

(Kit, Kat, Savin, Firn'gaer. Two more can teleport.)

Travel [DM BrianZ]
Tuesday April 15th, 2008 11:06:36 PM

OOC- Need final list of who teleported please.

As you arrive back in town, there seems to be a higher than usual amount of gossip and buzz. Seems like something is going on...

For those traveling through the wilderness:

You retrace your steps as you head back to town. You do not encounter any creatures. With all the supposed activity, you would think you would be stumbling upon more tribes of orcs or giants?

Kat'Miara highlight: Highlight to display spoiler: { As you travel, you absentmindedly search through your various pockets with your fingers. You find something you didn't realize you had. A jade ring, fitted with a large onyx gem. There is an inscription on the side written in giant.(let me know if you can read it) With a start, you realize where you last saw this ring. On the finger of the Dame! It must have fallen into your pouch when she nearly bumped into you at the meeting. }

While walking back " so what kinds roots do ya intend to plant here .... place seems mighty nice ... many oppurtunity's to build business and/or homes ."

"Me ... well i plan on reopening that Quarry and start helping rebuild the towns infrastructure as well as hopefully exporting some of it to the nearby area's ... be nice to help the town bnuild a nice reputation ....
at least something besides the rain "

Peerimus and Yorrick
Wednesday April 16th, 2008 8:55:05 AM

OOC sorry for the miss.

Peerimus will be walking back and marking the trail to the camp we have been using for the past day or so to make it possible for Grummk to find it. He will not be cutting a massive swath through the forest, but will to his opinion be marking the trail for the orc with the full understanding that the shaman is not a tracker.

Peerimus plans to stay at a second small camp about a mile from where he marks the trail for Grummk. "I will stay and keep an eye on the area. Get some supplies from Heranmar so that we can draft a writ for the centaurs. With that thought in mind we will need a seal. The council of Heranmar surely has one that we can at least use right now. Commission one for our personal use for the future. We should send word to Hook City that we are taking care of an orc and Giant tribe in the area. We require no assistance in the matter. Grab Cold Gear if you think you'll need it and if the orcs need climbing gear we may as well. We're not going to hand walk the giants all the way, but we will be riding shotgun out of our lands. I assume when we show up to do so, she will be a bit surprised to say the least. Try and find out any word on the Fist."

Peerimus bids the rest good journey and that he will see them in a few days. The druid then heads further west from the camp. His Pass Without a Trace masking his movement to any that might wish to follow.

Peeking at what's in her pocket, she squeaks in surprise.

Eyes wide, she looks about for a second, almost wildly, then decides to just stroll along, hands in pocket, whistling aimlessly (and badly off-key.)

Thinking to herself (if Message spell is on, she isn't aware, and will be broadcasting this thought) :Hmm.. I wonder when I'll see the Dame again. After all, if she dropped it, she's likely to want to see it again. Beautiful ring though....:

Savin
Wednesday April 16th, 2008 3:16:46 PM

Savin gets teleported back and says to the others, "I will see what I can do to get the wagons and horses. While don't you guys look into filling them up? Where and when should we meet?"

Savin will listen to the answers and then set off in a jog to visit his school and see how things are going there. He will then move to the market and start making inquiries on where he can purhase 2 wagons and teams to haul them.
