The Adventure Starts!

DM Bob & Carla
Sunday May 11th, 2008 6:15:16 PM

The flotilla of barges make their way towards land, those with the adventurers bringing up the rear. The winds remain brisk and the barges ships a small amount of water as they bash into the oncoming waves. Those with weak constitutions do in fact feel queasy if they are unused to the rolling deck, but for most the journey is marked by tedium and the chores of getting armour polished and gear safely stored. If any look to the water itself they might notice a large, dark shape, several times larger than the barge itself, drift beneath their vessel. The shape keeps pace with the barge for a moment before slipping back to the dark depths of the lake.

The hours pass uneventfully and as early afternoon approaches, the first barges to leave the wharf begin landing on the far shore.

[OOC if you've ever been on Lake Superior, especially in the late fall, you won't easily discount the possibility of seas sickness, even in fresh water!]

OOC: Haven't you heard of anyone getting seasick on a waterbed? I have. You see, it's the WAVES! It's the uuuupp, and dooooown, and uuuuuppp, and dooooown, and ... well you get it.

We had a hard time getting our horses on board because the waves. Waves in small lakes can be pretty rough, Sea of Galillee is one good example, and my impression of this lake is that it is very large. FYI: I've heard navy men sware on saltine crackers to help with the stomach oozies.

Once land is in sight, Calenin sighs with relief for himself and Vilria "We are almost there now, you've done fine girl." After the talk, Caelnin looks for something to to excite him somewhat on shore from the semi-boring boat trip to the other side (Spot - 24)

Vilria neighs with delight; she is happy that she is almost off the boat, but also senses that Caelnin is excited about the trip.

The tedium of the lake journey almost lulls Beren to sleep, but he maintains his vigilance throughout the voyage. He notices the large shape beneath the boat, and hopes it is not hungry.

As land begins to come into sight, he hopes that there are some decent trees wherever they are headed.

When he has time he helps other people load things if nessicary.

Fatine
Monday May 12th, 2008 11:54:14 AM

Unless Tarketh demands more from her, Fatine lounges on the barge floor, feigning a slight sickness. When land is sighted, she pulls herself to her feet and calls her dogs over, preparing to disembark. Raising her arm, she sends her raven flying ahead, squawking as it alights.

As nothing requiring his attention happens, Alexi begins to get a little bored and his curiousity about how the barges were being propelled moves him to look for its power source. He notices something dark and large loom jus beneath the surface but it soon vanishes into the deep. "That can't be it," he shudders.

Alexi looks for the skipper of the barge and inquires how the barges work, what propells them.

OOC: nothing was stated or described on how they move, but if it is obvious, like oars, disregard this post. :}

With shore now in sight, he goes back to the horses and makes sure they stay calm for the docking and unloading. He hopes the lakebottom on the shore is not so deep as it was out at Floating City.

In his banded armor, Jet attempts to rest next to his animals. He sits near the corner and tells Bantom, be a good boy", then he closes his eyes and allows the time to pass as it will. One must have a respite as often as possible before heading into the unknown, because one never knows when rest will again occur.

When talks begin about land being in sight, he opens his eyes, climbs to his feet and begins to prepare his animals for a disembarkment of the vessel. "lets have no more of that nonsense we had before, eh!"

Monday May 12th, 2008 11:05:55 PM

The voyage across the lake provides little in the way of excitement. A few passengers note the large dark shape beneath the barge, but none aboard can provide any information about it's origins. "Probably a sea monster" the bargeman replies, "never seen it m'self, but folks do talk, and stories tell of an ancient creature, cut off from the sea that makes 'is home 'neath these waters."

Alexi asks what powers the barge and his attention is directed forward where the backs of two enormous sea turtles are visible. The lines that run from their harnesses to a small cabin housed low on the forward deck are obviously used to direct the creatures. "Turtle ferries is more'n just a name" the bargeman says.

The adventurers take the opportunity to rest and clean their gear before disembarking. Mikal notices for the first time that his purse is missing along with all its contents, but his other gear is safe. As they approach land, orders are shouted, and lines thrown from shore. The bargemen begin heaving on the lines and the barges slowly turn until their sterns are pointed to shore. With each barge properly aligned, aft gangways are let down with a slap into the shallow water. The first carts and wagons on are now the first off and it is only a few yards of shallow water on firm sand that must be negotiate. There is none of the pandemonium on shore that accompanied loading at the docks.

Several hours of unloading the barges gets everyone on shore. The wagon master personally visits each wagon or cart and carries out a quick inspection, ensuring that all the animals are properly hitched, axles are sound and properly greased, and that loads are secured. He then gives each of the drivers, their passengers and any horsemen their instructions. "My name's Garth" he says with authority. "I'm the wagon master and as such in charge of this train and all that's a part of it. I give an order...you follow it! Is that clear?" he glares at Jet , remembering the bearded fighter's remarks back at the docks. "Any problems with that?" he crosses his arms which further accentuates his massive biceps and forearms. Assuming that none challenge his authority, Garth proceeds to give instructions to the first camp site, some 4 miles inland from the lake. "Follow the trail northeast from here until you reach the big clearing. It should be obvious; the scouts have already begun to set up. When you get there, get squared away and then search me out, I'll want some of you on watch tonight."

Garth waits a moment to answer any questions before proceeding back to the front of the train. It seems to take an eternity to get the massive train moving. Wagons creak and groan as the load is taken up by draft animals under the urging of their drivers, and those at the rear of the train soon find themselves squinting through a cloud of dust thrown into the air by those that passed before them.

Once Caelnin finds the items that he had ordered and now he starts to put the cart harness onto Vilria. "Sorry Vilria about putting this extra weight onto you. You should be able to pull it easily." He places the saddlebags into the cart with his other belongings and starts to lead Vilria with her new cart.

Caelnin has no problems with Garth's requests; it's just to keep everything as ordered as possible. He waits till it's his turn to move and does so.

On arrival, he finds a suitable spot, and prepares a meager campsite of his own, then goes to report in to the wagonmaster Garth as instructed.

"I am willing to take a late watch, as I see in the dark better than most."

After this quiet statement, he says nothing more, simply awaits instructions.

Mikal grumbles to himself about his missing purse, that was the rest of his life savings and what he earned. He sighs deeply and lets it go, reminding himself that money has no use where they're going.

He gathers up his things, and leads his horse off the barge. Listening to the wagonmaster's speech and mounting up. He considers volunteering for watch duty, but is distracted when he starts deciding which wagon to follow.

He picks one that seems like it could use some help and stick with it. Pulling out his flute to play on the way. Seeming to pick out a rather simple tune and play it decently.

While the wagons and carts disembark, Alexi takes the opportunity to put on his armor again. Next he looks for the barge with Lollena. (Spot: d20+1=6)

Unfortunately he had lost sight of the barge from the very beginning and they all looked the same to him, all lined up on the shores. So when it was finally time for him to disembark, the first thing he does is go looking for Lollena. After locating her, he urges her and the wagon driver she's on, to get a move on quickly so as not to be in the back of the line with all the dust.

Next Alexi locates the wagon with his investment of farming equipment and makes sure all is in order. He also encourages the wagon driver to make haste as not to be in the back of the line and eat dust.

From there on he 'rides herd', that is, stays to the outside, moving to the front, then ambling to the back, then to the front again, looking for 'problem' wagons.

At some point he stops to chat with Garth and inquires on his plans for the deployment of the wagons at the campsite. "Do you have a plan set up for the wagon formation or do they just camp wherever they stop?"

Alexi offers his services as guard either early evening or just before dawn, letting the nightseers volunteer for the darkest hours.

When it comes time for him to find a place to camp, he suddenly gets nervous. He'd like very much to join Lollena's camp but doesn't want to seem to be imposing himself. But he does work up enough courage to visit her campsite once they are settled.

"So, Lollena, how is the adventure so far? That wooden wagon seat can get very hard over time, especially if the way gets bumpy. If you have a small sack not being used, you could fill it with grasses, tie the end off, and use it as cussion." Alexi smiles, nervously.

At the sound of Mikal's flute, the lone dwarf atop a large wagon looks upon the cleric. "Why don't you tie your mount behind the wagon and ride wi' me. Mikal sees crimson script on the side of the wagon declaring it's contents to be medical supplies. The wagon lumbers along behind that of the herbalist, it's odd cabin perched above the wooden spoked wheels. The witch Fatine rides along side, accompanied by two large dogs and a loud raven that seems to delight in disturbing any quiet that might be found. Caelnin hitches Vilria to her cart and follows in line behind the medical supply wagon.

Alexi searches out Lollena and offers her advise on travelling in comfort, but she has already seen to her needs and resting atop a thickly quilted blanket she snaps the reins and her light wagon jerks forward. "Thank you" she calls back. "I think I'll be quite alright," She is clearly not nterested in the former Fist's clumsy advances.

The remainder of the afternoon passes uneventfully. The choking dust at the rear of the train coats all that it comes in contact with, and those who ride behind are hard pressed to keep it out of their eyes and throat. On either side of the track, the foliage of the Crying Woods presses in as if to reclaim the road should and return it to forest.

The location of the campsite is obvious to all. A large clearing in the forest has been established alongside a stream and the first wagons to arrive are arranged in groups by the scouts who had rode ahead to establish camp. Jet, Alexi, Caelnin and Anrete seek out the wagonmaster and offer their assistance. They find Garth Turnbuckle in conversation with Beren who is seated by a small isolated fire near the edge of the wood. "Rather you didn't keep to yerself out here" he explains. "I've use for you and the rest of these here men. Stow yer gear on that wagon" he points to a large open topped wagon being tended to by a large half-orc.

Once Garth has garnered all their attention, he begins relaying his instructions. There are twenty or so well armed and armoured settlers gathered around him. "I've divided up the caravan into 4 groups" he explains, "and I intend to divide you up into four as well. You'll each be responsible for a group of wagons and their occupants. That means setting up watches at night, helping them out if they run into trouble, and generally keepin' them moving. "

Garth looks over the assembled forces and checks to ensure his instructions are understood. "Each day, a group of you will ride ahead and scout our passage. You'll establish the campsite and wait for the caravan to arrive. It'll be tough riding on those days, and you'll cover plenty o' ground. That day your wagons 'll be at the front with me and Krol" he waves his arm in the direction of the half orc. "Next couple o' days you can rest back here with the rest of us."

Garth looks over those assembled before him and begins sorting them into groups, trying to match skills and ensure that the individual squads are well balanced. He singles out Beren, Caelnin, Anrete, Jet, and Alexi and assigns them to the last group of wagons that came in. "You five are together. I'll find you some more help later, but you best get back to your wagons and get them sorted out for the night." Garth hands Jet a crimson banner with the emblem of the Stonehelm company embroidered upon it. The grey helm with it's simple eye slits and flat nose bar, a clear symbol of the dwarven origins of the company. "This 'll let folks know yer in charge" he advises.

Back at the wagons, Tarketh calls Fatine to his side. "I don't know what arrangements have been made for our security" he confides in her, "but I have some important items stored aboard this wagon and I'm not convinced that any I've seen so far are up to the task of our protection. I'd like you to keep watch over the wagon tonight while I sleep. You can rest tomorrow as we travel." With that arranged, Tarketh begs his leave and retires into his wagon for the evening.

[OOC The last set of wagons includes the herbalists wagon, the medical supply wagon, and Lollena's wagon among others. Please establish watches to cover the night and make appropriate spot and listen rolls - you never know what may go bump in the night]

His voice is tight and filled with emotion. He takes a deep breath, then says no more. When he is assigned to the small watch group, he says,

"I suggest two hour watches, unless we wish to have more than one guard at a time. I am willing to take the dark of the night, from 2 until whenever we decide."

Again a long speech for the quiet elf. He sits back to await the groups decision. When it comes time for him to watch, he will roll out of his bedroll, and stand watch carefully.

Jet listens carefully to the words of Garth as he deploys the men to their various tasks. A look of shock plays across his face as he is given the banner and placed in charge of the group of wagons. He soon realizes, either Garth sees something in himself he is not yet aware of or Jet is being set up to fail. Regardless, he takes his work seriously and some may have noticed, he has not unplugged his wine skin since they got onto the ferries.

"Pardon me Garth, but how many hours a night will the wagons be stopped? I believe a watch should be in place as long as they are not moving and that will give us an idea of how to set watch order."

He makes much noise as he walks over to Bantom, his armor clanging with each stride. He pulls a spear from his military saddle and ties the banner to it for all to see and recognize, then mounts as he continues to hold it in one hand, his reigns in the other and waits for word to move out. He looks at those he has been assigned with and is pleased they are those he knows and have already met. The only one he needs to be concerned with at this time is the barbarian who likes to pull weapons on unarmed men abducting women, not that, that would be a problem out here. I hope. he thinks to himself.

He rides with his group of wagons and keeps as alert as possible, maintaining the dwarven banner is in plain sight at all times.

Once Fatine has eaten and seen to a meal for her dogs and horse, she ties the horse off with those pulling Tarketh's wagon. Once complete, she finds a nice, soft spot of earth next to Tarketh's wagon. Snapping he fingers and pointing to the ground, she allows the dogs to relax, though "relax" is a relative term. The pair of canines seem as viligant as ever to the untrained eye, watching their surroundings with interest as they lounge on the ground.

Next, Fatine coaxes the raven from her shoulder, then tosses it into the air. "Scout!" she calls. "And eat some worms!"

Finally, Fatine pulls out her small cauldron, and a few long, tapered candles. Lighting the candles, she arrays them in the ground around the cauldron and sits cross-legged on the ground, humming lightly to herself as she takes in whatever is going on around her.

DM Highlight to display spoiler: {Once per hour, Fatine will get up and make a few quick laps around Tarketh's wagon, inspecting it for any damage, danger, etc. Other than that, she sits by it, on the side that faces the outside of the camp (i.e., if this were a wagon circle, she would be outside the circle), and keeps an eye open for trouble. 'Better luck next time,' Alexi says to himself to cheer himself up as Lollena's wagon moves off.

"I best keep my eyes open for more important things on this trip than women," he mutters, and smiling at his clumsiness, he looks for Garth. He finds the Wagon Master at the edge of the wagon camp with several other Security recruits.

Garth's speech is encouraging to Alexi, as it shows much thought and order to this venture and when he's grouped with the others he was already aquainted with he felt good about it and that luck was on their side. However when the banner was handed to a cleric, he is disappointed.

'Shouldn't it have gone to me?' he ponders. 'I was promoted to sergeant with honors, surely I've got more experience leading fighting men than a cleric! Oh, simmer down. It'll probably be a pain in the behind. Not only does he have us to 'lead' but he has a whole group of wagons and their problems to contend with. Just as well I'm free of that!'

And so Alexi smiles as Jet takes the banner and puts it on his spear.

"I'll take the second shift," he offers. "My name is Alexi. Good to meet y'all again. Any one care to pick a code word for our wagon group so that when we meet in the dark we know friend from foe, or other wagon group?"

If the idea goes well then Alexi will offer the code word 'Wolf Pack', otherwise he'll just shrug and move on to other business.

Alexi will head for the wagon with his farming equipment. Greeting the farmer he asks how is it going so far. Asking permision to bed down near his family, and that being granted, he proceeds to remove Lobo's saddle, barding, and other gear. Then gives Lobo a good brushing and leads him to the stream. After drinking, Alexi lets Lobo eat the grass, not the forest vegetation, until it is near time for his watch. Leading Lobo back to the wagon, he saddles him up again, but without the barding, then heads out to meet the First Watchman.

Garth responds to Jet's inquiry. "We need to make near 20 miles each day, so there'll be precious little time for rest and dawdling...still, can't expect folks to travel in the dark can we. We'll stop for 8 hours rest each night. Now best get back to your charges and get them set for the night." With those simple instructions, Jet, Anrete, Beren, Alexi, and Caelnin ride back to the rearmost wagons, their banner held aloft on Jet's spear. Beren carries his gear with him, unwilling to trust the half-orc regardless of the fact that Garth apears to.

On arriving, the fighter plants the spear in the ground near a small campfire that has been lit in their absence, and he and his comrades divide up the watches. Beren elects the second watch when the skies will be darkest, although tonight it appears there will be an abundance of starlight to provide illumination. Caelnin, like his elven comrade, selects a watch in the middle of the night and will relieve Beren as 3rd watch. Alexi elects to stand second watch with Beren while Jet chooses first watch as it is unclaimed. From the healer's wagon Mikal's voice is heard to volunteer for the 4th and last watch. Anrete claims no watch and keeps his own council. Fatine has already set up her cauldron and positioned her canine companions by her side. None interfere with the strange woman's business as she lights her candles, for few might brave a curse or hex for no reason.

The first watch passes uneventfully, the only noises heard by Jetare the snoring of tired travellers and the soft padding of Fatine and her dogs as she circuits the campsite. Beren and Alexi's watch is also uneventful until late in their stand when Anrete appears from the dark unexpectedly and unannounced to take a turn at guard duty. The ranger and the former 'Fist ' issue challenge and Fatine and her dogs are immediately alerted to the going's on.

Assuming that Anrete's ill advised surprise appearance does not end in bloodshed, Caelnin awakens and joins the barbarian and the witch in their vigil. It is a quiet two hours until they pass responsibility on toMikal who keeps an eye on the campsite and surroundings as the first dim light of dawn penetrates the dark. The cleric softly plays his flute to amuse himself. Several times he stops and strains his ears listening for sound from the forest, to no avail. Whether all is quiet, or the flute playing has tricked his ears he is not sure, for really, how can one be alert for out of place sounds while playing the flute?

Morning comes early. The bustle of settlers preparing their morning meals and hitching wagons overtakes the camp. A long dusty day awaits them all.

Next morning, hetakes up his assigned duties in scouting or escorting the wagons. When Caelnin suggests keeping the same watch schedule, he simply shrugs his shoulders, and nods.

That night, during his watch, he finds it difficult to concentrate. Something is bothering him, but he's not sure what. Perhaps it is the presence of the half-orc. He knows in his mind that the man is as much a victim of the orcs as he has been, but it is hard to let go of the hatred for that race.

As long as there are no problems during his watch, he turns it over to the next guard, and goes to sleep, hoping the morning will bring new council, or understanding to his troubled mind.

It may come to pass we are attacked and then given the option of chasing those that wish for us to think they are escaping, when in fact, it may be a ruse to have us abandon our post. In any case, do not travel more then thirty or so feet from those we are bound to protect."

Jet is patient with the wagon train they are with, yet he is also firm with those he feels may be lagging behind. He does not want to have to face Garth again really. Not that he's afraid of him, oh no, but a public scene will only demoralize non-combatants.

At night, after his watch, he sleeps in his chain shirt, for some small comfort in case of a night raid. After he slips on the more comfortable armor, he takes a very long pull from his wine skin before curling up with his bedroll and falling fast asleep.

In the morning, after he prays and toasts, with prudence, all the gods, he dons his spiked banded mail, feeds his animals and prepares for another day.

By morning, she is exhausted, having ridden the whole day before, and stayed awake all night. She eats a half-hearted breakfast, packs up her various tools and the cauldron, and ties her horse to Tarketh's wagon. When the wagon train departs, she climbs into Tarketh's wagon, and is soon sound asleep. Aside from waking for a bit of water or some trail rations, she sleeps the day away, and offers to take the same duties at night.

She is not so quiet tonight. For most of the evening and night, she can be heard mumbling quietly to herself, or someone. She barely acknowledges the dogs or her crow, but at one point in the wee hours of the night, she stands and stomps her foot, speaking in a hushed, harsh voice for a moment before settling down next to the cauldron again.

Alexi is startled by Jet's observations. "Well, we'll see. She appears to be a strong minded and willed woman. Is any man ready for such things? But I guess that's a good thing for where we are going, I suppose." Alexi returns a wry smile.

Alexi has an arrow pointed straight at Anrete's chest as he calls out "What's the Code Word?", but fortunately he stays his hand as a grumbled reply, unintelligible, has the sounds of the young barbarian's voice.

"You nearly got yourself killed!" Alexi exclaims, exasperated. "Why didn't you call out the Code Word? This is EXACTLY why I suggested one in the first place. Further out in the wilderness, I'll not be so kind to hold my hand for so long."

Alexi realizes that he's tired, but the young boy needed to get an earfull, as bad habits tend to repeat themselves if not broken early on.

Alexi makes his way to his bedroll, removes his breast plate, and settles back for some sleep. For now he feels he can aford the comforts of not sleeping in armor. He is asleep quickly.

At daybreak dones his armor and gets Lobo ready, still not using his bardin. He knows Lobo will have to be on the move most of the day and doesn't want to wear his horse out. He makes sure the farmer and his family are ok, then eats a bite quickly. Riding on Lobo he patrols the surrounding area of their group of wagons, occasionally passing by Lollena's, but not saying anything, just nodding his head at her when she glances at him.

Alexi agrees with Caelnin with the watch rotation, but before they break up, he approaches Anrete. "Anrete, sorry about my harsh words last night but it really was a close call. Tonight, please remember to call out the Code Word 'Wolf Pack', as you approach. OK?" and gives him a friendly slap on the shoulder.

Then to Beren he asks, "By the way, Beren, what kind of animal tracks have you seen today so far? Should we expect to have any wild animals approach our camp tonight?"

(DM can help out here.)

He spends the time before his watch taking care of Lobo, putting on the bardin, and chatting with the farmer. When his turn comes he gathers his shield and weapons, finds Beren, and charts out a patrol path where they can cross each other occasionally and pass on any news. The patrols are timed, so if they don't cross each other at the designated time, they will be alerted for possible trouble and start looking for the other, and possibly set off an alarm signal.

Baring his teeth, Anrete glare at the warrior, his eyes flushed with bloodlust once again. Drawing his orcish tomahawk, the gangly youth approaches Alexi until they are but a pace apart. His uncountable scars are now clearly visible, some of which are obviously from whippings, some from claws and bites of beasts and many from various weapons. Then without a glance or word, the savage barbarian strides away to take up his watch - there is something very cold and elemental about the youth.

As the watch passes uneventfully, Anrete continues surveying the route and ground before he continues on with the journey. He makes no attempts to communicate with anyone else except a few occasional smile at the elvish archer.

The caravan begins to find a rhythm of it's own as drivers become familiar with the routine of hitching animals, water breaks for the beasts, and periodic security patrols that travel up and down the line of wagons. The heat and dust, while not unbearable, make for a long day, and most are content to pull the wagons to a stop when the next night's camp is reached.

Jet confirms the same watches as the night before and releases the security detail to prepare for the night. The first long day in the saddle has taken it's toll on a few of the settlers. Mikal and the dwarven cleric in charge of the medical supply wagon find themselves busy tending to minor abrasions and aches until dusk. "Durak," he introduces himself, a symbol of Domi hangs from his neck.

Fatine seems distracted, but it does not hamper her vigilance or that of her animal companions. While light, the raven is able to scan the entire camp area from above, but there is little to peak its interest.

Alexi manages to catch sight of Lollena as she unhitches her wagon, and can't help but notice that she is assisted by a tall, thin young man with a pronounced Adam's apple. They appear to know each other, and seem at ease in each other's company.

The second night passes without concern. Garth ushers in the morning with a visit to the rear wagons. He gathers Jet, Anrete, Beren, Caelnin, and Alexi around the banner and gives them their orders. "Today you will ride ahead and scout the way to the next camp site. Bring that one with you, "he points to Mikal, "a healer can always be useful. Follow the existing trail north and find a good spot with water no more than twenty miles ahead. "

Tarketh takes Fatine aside and shows her a drawing of a herb with large palmate leaves and a white flower on a central stalk. "I would like you to accompany the scouts this day and search out this plant. It is used to make salves for the animals where they have been rubbed raw by their traces. I need as much as you can gather."

Alexi braces himself as the brash youth approaches, brandishing his orcish axe. Alexi, bow already lowered and arrow pointing to the ground, knows he's at a disadvantage but plays it right along. This stuff is what makes sergeants, and a sergeant that can't take it doen't last.

So as Anrete vents his anger, Alexi glares back with cold, steel eyes, the eyes of experience from age and battle. The youth obviously has been through a lot as well, but needs some good down-home training in the art of military discipline. It's one thing to be in a roving band where leadership is determined by the meanest and toughest, but this isn't the case here. 'Hopefully he'll see that', Alexi prays.

When Alexi sees the gangly man working with Lollena he feels a strange tweak in his gut. The words of Jet float back to him and he sighs, "What will be, will be. Not all women are suitable wives for soldiers, no matter how pretty. My mum being a rarity, beautiful, and can wield a sword as well." So Alexi moves on.

Alexi sleeps well, and is glad that there were no encounters, friendly or otherwise, during the entire watch. The news of the scouting mission is excellent. Doing something different occasionally keeps them on their toes and not get complacent with a set pattern.

This time he prepares Lobo with the barding, and takes his full arsenal of weapons, plus some extra gear for camping out, just in case something weird happens and they don't join up with the wagon train. He chooses a scouting path that will keep himself a distance from Anrete just in case the youth is still cross at him.

Jet notices this, and having heard of the near friendly-fire the other night, speaks some words of wisdom to Alexi.
"Yes, it is very different. Even when we are on our week long rest period we get twice a year, we are expected to behave civily and uphold the Fist Code. Anyone who dishonors the Fist, whether on duty or off, is banned. So this sense of order and law is ingrained very deep."

Looking at Anrete as Jet points him out, he replies when Jet finishes. "You are correct, I suppose. Just pray that none of us gets hurt in the process of learning the nuances of Nature, eh?" and lets out a good laugh.

Then pointing out Fatine to Jet he says, "Is she another of your examples of chaos? She seems like she could be attractive, once all those layers of oddities are pelled away."

Alexi at least feels better about the conversation, which has given him a little insight into Jet and building up his confidence in the cleric as a leader.

Occasionally Alexi will accost Beren and ask him what tracks he's seen so far. (Wilderness Lore check I think).

Keeping his eyes peeled, not only on the terrain around him but also noting the movement of Lobo's ears, he looks for signs of possible danger.

The party leads out ahead of the caravan. Initially they make good time, the path is clear of obstacles and the footing for their mounts is firm. However, Anrete and Beren decide that a stealthier approach is required and slip into the forest beside the cart path. The terrain beneath the canopy of trees is less even, with deadfall and thickets making travel difficult. Caelnin's cart has also begun to lag behind, perhaps not the best choice for a scouting mission.

Jet and Alexi converse as they travel but begin to realize that the group must relax it's pace if they are all to stay together, or change their mode of transportation if they are to make twenty miles this day. Mikal keeps his own council as the morning wears on.

Whilst in the woods themselves, Anrete and Beren cannot escape the feeling they are being observed, but they neither hear nor see anything

Fatine sends her raven in search of Tarketh's plants and by mid-day the bird can be heard calling from some 100 feet inside the forest with a Toc -- toc -- toc that resembles the popping sound one makes with their tongue. She draws Jet's attention to the raven's call and it's meaning.

They resume their normal speed when Jet is told of the plant that is likely found by the pet bird. He sighs deeply at the delay, but at least, this is a needed product for the train's herbalist and thus is more excusable a diversion. "Very well Fatine, you, Beren and Anrete go recover the plant, we will stay with the wagon. If there are any signs of traps or problems, to hades with it and return to the group."

Jet looks around nervously. He does not like splitting up the group in such a manner, but they can't take the wagon into the woods so easily and to leave it behind with the horses would be just foolish.

I do not know why we would be bringing a wagon with us either. I did not see a post pertaining to it, however, if we did, one would still be faster then a train of them, so it's possible to still stay ahead of the others.

I forgot about the change in movement when unmounted, so I think we will all need to stay on horseback as scouts.

Lets assume, that whatever "orders" are given are done, unless someone says they will not. Correct me if you disagree, but it could take an extra day for posts to confirm it will be done if we don't handle it in that manner.

I read in Fatines post she showed the picture of the plant to her bird. That is why it is assumed the bird found what it was showed.

Lets just allow the DM's to clean this up for us so we can get on track again. Hopefully, whatever is watching those that felt a presence, is benevolent, if not, we can just deal with it.

Quote: Fatine sends her raven in search of Tarketh's plants and by mid-day the bird can be heard calling from some 100 feet inside the forest with a Toc -- toc -- toc that resembles the popping sound one makes with their tongue.

The implication here is that it is not danger, otherwise it would probably be some frantic cawing or squawking. Fatine would know of her bird in distress I suppose. So I concluded the DM meant the bird at least thought it had found something interesting, for it at least.

Also, since Beren and Anrete posted AFTER Jet and his request for the two to go with Fatine, I would have presumed they'd mention the action, either go with her nor not. So I was puzzled as to their response, or lack thereof, to the 'orders', so to speak. Their postings only indicated a continued progress as opposed to stopping to investigate the bird's calling. Maybe the'll amend their posts.

Excitement about their first scouting mission leads to a little disorganization, and some confusion. The scouts start out early, in advance of the slower wagon train. The path through the forest is wide enough that the trees part overhead to reveal the sky above. A wagon can easily manoeuvre the trail, though it would be a tight squeeze if any oncoming traffic should also be as wide as a wagon. The forest on either side is shaded by the canopy of new leaves overhead, and the terrain is more difficult with deadfall and thickets.

Jet astride Bantom, and Alexi on Lobo ride side by side down the beaten path speculating about the adventure, assessing the merits of the members of the scouting party, and fretting about the pace the group is keeping. Mikal follows close behind, praying to Alemi that the day will prove uneventful.

Apologizing sheepishly for bringing his cart, Caelnin is able to keep up with the main group, as they slow down from time to time to allow Beren and Anrete to venture off the trail and into the underbrush to scout, and Fatine to search for rare herbs. Pickings are slim for the witch however.

Whether it is due to a lack of threat along the trail, or the noise from the party scaring off any lurking creature, most of the day passes easily, though too quickly for the goals set for the party by the wagon master. However, at the 16 mile mark Beren and Anrete's survival skills yield results as they guide the party to a low flat clearing off to one side of the trail. The clearing is bordered on two sides by a raised bluff, and a narrow brook of rapidly running water flows down the middle, with a little extra vegetation here and there along its course. The area appears large enough to support the needs of the wagon train if they spread out on either side of the little river. A little ways into the bush, the crow continues to signal the location of a cache of the sought after herbs. Fatine prepares to strike out after the bird, and Alexi tells Beren and Anrete to accompany the witch.

While the three of them, Caelnin, Jet, and Alexi stop and wait for Beren, Anrete, and Fatine to return, Alexi dismounts and sets up a marker at the side of the trail pointing to the entrance to the clearing. He uses sticks to shape an arrow and draws a fist in the ground to indicate a Mailed Fist was here and the wagon master can trust the markings.

Alexi tells jet he's not too concerned about making exactly 20 miles, "Good camping places like this don't come by at easy intervals. We take what we can get, and having running water is a premium. But I also would like to go a little further, just to see."

Then looking up at the bluffs he adds "It would be a good idea, Jet, to scout out these bluffs before we get settled in. This site is ideal for camping, protected by the wind and with running water, but the bluffs also hem us in and provide a huge defensive advantage to any foes that may be in the area. If you would make that sugestion to Garth when they get here, the combined number of scouts in of all the groups should be able to comb these bluffs easily before it get's dark."

Beren accompanies Fatine and Anrete into the forest to the east of the trail almost 70 feet where the raven continues to utter his staccato call. Beneath several tall conifers where a small spring emerges from the ground, a patch of white flowers grows from the moist ground. Fatine shows them to Beren and compares them to her specimen. She is sure they are one and the same and can proceed to collect them. She can also share her knowledge of the plant and its properties with the ranger.

Alexi dismounts at the south edge of the clearing where it first abuts the trail and leaves a sign for the wagon master should they travel further and not be here when the caravan arrives.

Jet and Mikal remain on their steeds and keep a watch at the north end of the clearing where all are either in sight or in earshot should trouble arise. [I presume that Anrete, Fatine, and Beren have left their mounts at roadside in the care of Jet and Mikal].

Caelnin leads Vilria across the clearing west of the trail to the edge of the small stream to water the beast. The cart bumps across the uneven ground behind her. As the elf allows the mule to lower her head and drink, he catches sight of a dark blur and hears a creature rush through the undergrowth that intermittently lines the stream. A second creature lunges right behind it. Each creature is approximately 5 feet long, low to the ground, and dark brown in colour. The first lunges at the mule, but manages to only get fouled in the leather harness [Hit AC=8]. The second creature is more successful and bites at the mule's neck where it remains firmly clamped to Vilria's throat. [Hit AC=12 for 8 HP -- I applied a -2 penalty to Vilria's AC because she is still in harness]. The mule bucks and rears violently trying to shake the animal loose.

Jet, Alexi, and Mikal can all hear the commotion of the braying mule at the water's edge, although the cart blocks their view of exactly what is going on.

I don't see the bluffs, wouldn't the cart have to go down a bluff to get to the water since the water runs down the middle of the clearing, which is bordered on two sides by bluffs?

Please clarify where the bluffs are 'cause I don't want to go charging off and find myself tumbling down a bluff.

Also clarify where Alexi is so I can know where he'll end up at at the end of one round. I'll check back in a little bit.

Alexi had just mounted up again from putting the markers for Garth and the caravan when Lobo's ears prick up and he hears the panicked braeing (?) of a horse. He spins around and quickly spots the distressed anima, it is Caelnin's mule and they are over near the stream! But What's attacking them? He doesn't see anything!

"Drat, I'm too far away! Must be some water creature jumping out at it," he mutters. Clicking his tounge and clamping his knees together, the signal to charge, Lobo takes off towards the cart (run at 35ftx3 heavy armor), lance leveled, but ready to drop it in favor of a better weapon if necessary.

OOC: he should end up at O8 or close, unless he falls off or Lobo stumbles, or my calculations are way off. Ride check in case of bad/uneven terrain = d20+8 = 20.

The braying mule, snarling weasels, and a shouted alarm are heard throughout the area

Caelnin falls back to get a better fix on his target, and his arrow just narrowly misses.

Jet springs into action urging Bantom forward and shouting out a warning. His javelin strikes very close, but causes no harm to the animals. (Please indicate targeted creature D1 or D2 in future posts, and remember -4 penalty for throwing into melee.)

Fatine is giving Beren a lesson in herbalism when she hears the commotion. Beren and Anrete also hear the cleric/fighter's shout. The witch casts a quick spell. (Nice teamwork, however Divine Favour can only be cast on self -- PHB p. 224. Will assume spell in effect on Fatine.) With her dogs at her heels, she heads towards the sound, Beren and Anrete leading the way. (Double move through forest for Beren (60 ft) and Anrete (80 ft), Fatine (15ft after casting spell).

Alexi clambers onto Lobo who immediately springs forward. (Alexi would need to mount (move action), but Lobo would still have his move action for distance posted. Benefit of doubt granted due to nice Ride check!) The fighter will soon close on the conflict.

Mikal ?

The dire creatures continue their molestations of poor frightened Vilria. The mule's frantic bucking cause the first dire weasel (D1) to miss (hits AC 9) however its companion (D2) remains fixed to Vilria's throat draining her life blood. OOC: Correct, she got a total of 30' of movement (one move action), which she could use to get to H38. "Double movement" terrain doesn't cut your entire move in half. OOC: Question: the cart is not displaid on the map but my guess would be that it's right behind Vilria, meaning that it would be in K7, since a horse takes up two squares (Vilria in k5-k6). Correct me if I'm wrong because that would make a difference for Alexi. It's a straight line to D2 -- unless there's a cart in the way.

I calculate 30ft to J6 in a straight line but if there is a cart in K7, then it'll be 35ft. but the cart will block the straight line and no Charge action. So I'll post as if there is a cart in the way.

IC: Alexi now sees what's attacking Vilria. They look like a pair of giant weasles! He levels his lance but realizes that due to the convergence of his comrades and the interposing cart, he can't charge through, as is his normal attack.

So Alexi maneuvres Lobo around the back of the cart and, like in training trying to put the lance point through the hole, aims at the weasle attached to Vilria (D2) (note: he can't use Ride-by-Attack because he couldn't Charge, thus he ends up at J6, however that's just 35ft so Lobo gets another action)

Ride check to free both hands DC5 = d20+8 =26 (yeeehaaaa)

Lance att: d20 +5 (att bonus +4, height mod +1) =17 damage= d8+2 = 4

Fight w/warhorse DC10 Ride check: d20+8= 20 (excelent!)

Lobo att w/hoof d20+6 = 26 (a killer horse! Natural 20!)
Crit check d20+6= 17 dmg if critical hit = 1d6+4 + 1d6+4 = 8 + 10 = 18 (or just 8 if not crit)

Addendum: I just noticed that Bantom possibly did 18 pts dmg to weazle D2. Comgine that with any other possible hits, it may be dead by the time Alexi gets there. So if it is dead, he'll attack D1 with lance, that means 5 more feet of movement for Lobo putting him into his second move action, thus no attack this round.

I'd hate to waste a N20.... :}

Weakened by the loss of blood, the mule can do little more than stand in it's traces, it's aggressor still clinging to it's throat. Anrete moves closer and hurls a javelin to little effect. Beren and Fatine close in on the battle but are not close enough to engage.

Caelnin, distraught over the plight of his mule, swings ineffectively at the weasel and makes room for his burlier comrades who have trained at close quarters. As expected, both Alexi and Jet wade in. Jet leaps from his horse, sword drawn, and commands his steed into the fray. The horse paws at the weasel attached to the mule and sweeps it to the ground with a hoof. Stunned, the creature cannot defend itself from the onslaught and is trampled to death. Alexi guides Lobo between the cart and the shoreline where his warhorse strikes a fatal blow to the second weasel before it can attack.

And so without bloodying a single sword, or taking any damage themselves, the brave adventurers are able to dispatch two creatures of the wild.

[OOC: I had to take some liberties with positioning as Caelnin had already taken the spot where Jet was to dismount. After resolving Jet's movement, there was no place for Lobo, and D2 was already dead. The same 35' move allowed Lobo to attack D1 and it seemed such a waste to ignore a natural 20 :)]

As Alexi approaches at a gallop, his quick, trained combat eyes assess that if he comes in from behind the cart he could be hit by friendly fire from Jet, Caelnin, and Anrete, so he changes course slightly and goes around the left side of the cart, between the cart and stream, and rounds the front of the cart.

In doing so he catches the second weasle unawares and dispatches it nicely.

New post:
With one hoof atop the second weasle, Lobo eyes it menacingly and snorts several times. A quick glance to his right tells Alexi that the first weasle is just a bloody mess too.

(OOC: Out of combat)

The party learns that their mounts are more than beasts of burden, as the two dire weasels expire beneath the hooves of Bantom and Lobo. After calming his horse, Jet tends to the wounded Vilria, who is being comforted by a grateful Caelnin. The copper haired sharpshooter is generous with his praise for his companions. Alexi, too, is deservedly proud of the role his horse played in the combat.

Anrete collects his javelin, as Beren and Fatine arrive on the scene.

The former Fist suggests the party reconnaissance the area to ensure there are no further surprises, and the party spreads out to investigate, though Mikal stays close to the cart, and Caelnin continues to comfort the stricken Vilria.

Regrouping, after their investigation, the party compares notes and comes to the conclusion that the site if clear of dangers. Their discussion ends just as the sound of riders can be heard coming along the path. A quick glance at the standard held in the first rider's hand is enough for the group to learn that they are part of the security detail assigned to the first group of wagons. The wagon train won't be far behind.

Beren watches helplessly as the battle takes place and is ended before he can even arrive. He pauses to catch his breath, and then says,

"I will scout the area more closely."

He will start just outside the scene of the attack, finding where the dire weasels came from and working towards their den. (Track feat SUrvival role 14 against DC 10) When he finds the tracks, he says,

"This is where they came from, I will find the den."

He turns to the barbarian,

"Would you come?"

OOC: DMs, about what time is it? How much time untill darkness?

IC: With the camp site secured of any more hostile creatures for the time being, Beren finds the weasle tracks (I suppose) and Alexi congratulates him, "Good idea Beren. Find their den and see if there are any orphans. Perhaps you can befriend them and raise them as pets or companions."

He then picks up the dire weasle Lobo killed and looks at the carcass, inspecting the pelt.
Appraise d20+2 = 20 (hehehehehehehe)
It doesn't look too bad as Lobo's hoof crushed the skull and left the pelt in good condition. (DMs, I'm making a wild guess here from the Appr roll, but considering the Natural 20 hoof attack, it makes sense, eh?)

He then picks up the dire weasle carcass Bantom squashed and inspects it.
Appraise d20+2=9 (yuk, it's either damaged beyond any worth, or any worth Alexi can determine)

He holds the carcass up to Jet and says, "Dang, not much left of this weasle pelt. Too bad. What do you want to do with it? I plan to find someone who knows how to skin and cure my pelt, and find someone who can make something pretty out of it. But yours, to me, there isn't much left to make anything out of. At least we can have some fresh roasted weasle meat tonight."

Alexi's mind begins to wander what pretty thing could be made with the pelt, with intentions of giving it to Lollena. 'That skinny farmer won't be able to come up with anything like that!' he smiles. 'Something warm for winter, I'm thinking. Hm... yeah!'

His thoughts are interrupted by the sounds of hoof beats. He quickly drappes the carcass arcoss the back of his saddle, mounts up, and readies his lance again. He relaxes a bit when he sees the banner.

"Hey Jet, you're the Leader, you can have the priviledge of informing them we've found tonight's camping spot and it has been secured."

OOC: my original idea of scouting the bluffs was because I was thinking the bluffs were very close by, however my impression now is that they are too far away to pose any danger of any creature using the hight to toss things at us. DMs, if I'm wrong, let us know, because such things would be very obvious to Alexi.

(OOC: as per previous DM post "the site is clear of dangers." In other words, this is a safe place for the wagons. The party has dispatched any threat.-DM Carla)

Not wishing to loose a hard-to-come-by pretty gift for Lollena, Alexi smiles at Jet. "Agreed, so I'll purchase the shares, with treasure shares to come if necessary, but I really want the pelt. Perhaps we can sell some of this meat to the others. These weasles are huge, with tens of pounds of fresh meat. Surely one of our own caravan members knows how to butcher them for a share. It is always best to have fresh meat and save the rations for lean times, don't you think?"

OOC: DMs, how big are these and about how many pounds of meat would we get, after butchering? And would Garth allow us to upon up shop for some fresh BBQ weasle?

When our group arrives, Alexi will inquire for a butcher and meat curer to fix the two up for a share in the profits of selling the meat. Also a furer to have the good pelt skinned, treated, and fixed up nicely.

If he can't find any in our group, he'll look outside, but he'd prefer to help out our group as much as possible.

OOC: If I need to roll for any of these things let me know.

Caelnin, almost as traumatized as his mule, continues to comfort the animal, and worries about other predators.

Though the weasel trails appear erratic, Beren is able to discern definite movement patterns. He finds the opening to their burrow, but it appears long, low, and dark. The slender elf might be able to wriggle into the tunnel, but it will be an uncomfortable, smelly crawl.

Alexi appraises the corpses. The dire creature is larger than a normal weasel, almost 5 ft. in length, though thin and with a tail almost as long as its body. The fur looks similar to what he has seen trimming parkas and other winter clothing in the Catacombs, however it will be 2 years before the fighter has a chance to market any pelts in a big city. Besides, he must find a way to skin and gut the creature without damaging the fur and figure out how to treat it to keep it supple before it can be crafted into a garment or made into trim.

Jet suggests that the fighter find someone to treat the skin, adding that anything of value found by the party is to be divided by the party. He then goes off to find the wagon master.

Satisfied that any threat has been dealt with, Fatine returns to the patch of herbs under the coniferous trees.

+++++++

There is a chill in the air as the shadows of the trees lengthen. The witch returns to camp satisfied that the packs strapped to the backs of her dogs are filled with the desired herb. A divine smell greets her nostrils when she finds the druid huddled over a cauldron on a small cooking fire. Tarketh's gentle smile becomes a grin at the sight of Fatine's harvest. Lowering his voice, he suggests, "get something to eat, and get a little sleep." In a voice only the witch can hear, he adds, Highlight to display spoiler: { "I'd like you to keep watch over the wagon tonight. What we bring in this wagon is of paramount importance to our survival in the uncharted lands. You can sleep in the wagon tomorrow." }

Jet debriefs to Garth. The wagon master doesn't seem too happy that the caravan made only 16 miles before stopping, and doesn't mince words letting the shaggy haired cleric/fighter know. "How d'you expect us to get to Bryn in time for the farmers to get their crops in? At this dawdlin' pace they'll be sowin' their seeds in the snow!" The wagon master glowers at Jet, "you've got three days to think about it, and on the fourth yer group scouts again." With that, Garth moves off to check one of the other four groups of wagons.

Any sting Jet or the others might feel at the angry words of the wagon master are quickly soothed by expressions of gratitude from the common folks. "A good camp site don't occur just anywhere, and with good water like this!" volunteers one man, as he happily fills barrels with the sweet water from the little creek.

Alexi finds a farmer who is willing to help him skin and cure the hides in exchange for one of the pelts. The farmer informs the fighter that he wouldn't suggest feeding the vermin's meat to anyone or anything he cared much about.

Caelnin

OOC @ Jet: Due to the massive con damage that Vilria took, I decreased her Total HP for the Duration (Which might be over)... Her normal with the 8 con damage back is 21...

Once most of the people have settled, Caelnin leads Vilria to their part of the wagon mob and finds Lollena. He doesn't want his lack of thought mean the death of Vilria.

"Hello... As you are one of the people that I know that isn't in security detail, would you or someone that you know be able to help guide Vilria and her cart to the next campsite whenever I'm scouting for the next site. I just need someone that I can trust. You can think about it for a few days if you wish, until I need to go on my next scouting mission. If you want to talk, I'll be with Vilria."

Once he leaves Lollena to her own business Caelnin returns to his cart, Vilria sleeping quietly next to it. Caelnin moves some things around and starts to carve out some more out of the wood that he was given. He knows that he won't put in a full day's work into it, but he still takes his time, not rushing his trade, working till he feels hungry enough to eat.

Once everyone meets up for setting up watches, Caelnin repeats what he said last time. "It will be better if we keep the same structure as last night, unless someone has an objection to it."

Jet gets a bit upset about Garth's words, but he knew it was coming. Sixteen miles in a day was not enough for the train as he had expected, but no time to lament and the wagon masters bite marks only harmed his pride, so it is soon put aside.

Jet meets back up with Vaya and brushes her down before he eats dinner. He then takes the barding off of Bantom and brushes him down also, giving him some extra roots for a job well done this afternoon.

While they eat, she strolls over to Alexi and watches the weasel production. "Dat dere meat may no be good for us, but it may be good for dee horses and dogs and what not, hmm?" Watching the skinning, she continues, "Course, what do Fatine know? I be a herbalist." she says with a wink to Alexi.

Laughing, she walks back to where her dogs and horse are eating. "No, assistant herbalist!" she chuckles. "What? Dat no have nothin' ta do with - . . . But I . . ." She continues talking, though apparently not to anyone in particular. Sitting down, she pets one of the dogs and mumbles a bit more to herself.

Alexi (AC: 17, HP:25/25) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37)
Tuesday May 27th, 2008 9:25:01 PM

As the group splits up upon the arrival of the caravan, Alexi takes both carcasses. After everyone has parked their wagons, the beaming fighter atop the mighty steed trots over to Lollena to show off their prize.

"Look what creatures were lurking in the stream waiting for an unwary farmer go for a pail of water. I killed this one," holding up the one with the crushed head, "and our leader, Jet, killed this one," holding up the other one. "Nothing to worry now, though, we've check and looks like these were the only ones."

Not waiting for a reply, he trots off in search of someone who knows how to skin and prepare the pelt for use in a garment. He is disappointed to hear that the meat is too gamey to eat and cringes at the steep price to pay to even get one prepared properly but figures that one good one is better than none, with gold in low supply and rather less valuable when you can't spend it or eat it, 'Trade is the key. Got to think like a trader now,' he reminds himself.

"I just hope the other's don't mind, but you have to spend in order to get," he tells the farmer as the bargain is made.

Fatine steps up behind Alexi and startles him. "Oh, my lady," he says and bows lightly. "Horses don't eat meat," he said, trying to sound very polite. "But I'm sure we can save a goodly portion of the meat for your handsome dogs, isn't that right, Mr. Skinner?" And Alexi instructs the farmer to salvage as much of the meat as he can and give it to Fatine.

To Fatine he says, "Maybe the Master Herbalist knows what to do with the bones as well? Ground them into powder or something?" And instructs the farmer to deliver the bones as well. "And the sinews can be used for many things as well... oh what the heck," he says nervously, "Just give her everything that's left after it's skinned. Teeth, claws, bones, liver, gut, everything, the whole thing."

He turns back to Fatine and tries to compliment her, "Those claws can be made into a pretty necklace or bracelets..." then flustered he bows slightly and leaves with a sigh of relief, but not sure why.

Alexi returns to the campsite and sets up his own little camp, checking on Ned and his family. He proceeds to care for Lobo, removing the saddle and armor, and letting the horse graze while brushing him down. "That strange lady thought you would eat meat," he jokes with Lobo as he cares for him. He ate a hearty vegetable soup with Ned's family, going into much detail of the Battle of the Dire Weasle and the near demise of Vilria, before meeting up with the Watch Detail.

"Same watch as before suits me fine," Alexi confirms.

When they meet to set up watch, he tells Jet with a determined face, "It isn't fair you get blamed. I'm just as much to blame for picking this spot. But you did well, and we'll do well. Don't let that man get to you. He seems to remember your troubles at the pier, and I guess he's just rubbing it in. I'll stand right next to you if he starts to get out of hand."

The caravan arrives and the wagons make four distinct circles, two on either side of the stream. After Jet is dismissed by the wagon master, the group falls out and each tends to their own affairs.

Pretty Lollena smiles sweetly at Alexi when he waves the weasels around, however her attention returns to stocky Caelnin. "Of course I'll look after your things!" she replies, adding, "Pliny can help, or one of the girls." The seamstress gestures over to the wagon driven by the plump matron, with the six 'daughters.'

Alexi accepts the farmer's offer, and a good thing! "Grew up on me dad's farm outside Plateau City. Went to the city and trained as a tanner for me profession. This 'ere venture will give me an' mine a chance at our own land," he volunteers as he works the pelts. When finished, he rolls up one of the prepared furs, and hands it to the fighter.

By the time the animals are brushed down and fed, the sun is but a smudge in the dark sky. (Survival DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { predict the spring weather is about to become abnormally cold. Possibly approaching freezing.})

"You an' your companions are more'n welcome to come eat with us," invites a thick set man as he approaches Jet, gesturing to include the other scouts. Alexi might remember the man as the one he saw fully two weeks back in the streets of Floating City, but now Cairn Cunnane, Blacksmith, is in charge of a team that draws a wagon piled high with construction lumber. His smithing tools and personal effects crowded to one side. "Pliny here is a carpenter's 'prentice." The blacksmith slaps a tall, thin, rather earnest looking young man on the back. "We can spell ya a bit tonight if yer tired," he says fixing Beren with a steady gaze.

Wagons have been drawn into a circle around a central fire. A large cauldron hangs suspended over the fire, and a farmer's goodwife ladles stew onto bowls and plates as the folks crowd 'round for their supper. Some hang around to visit, while others retire early, tired from a hard day on the road.

There are a couple of smaller fires, one near the herbalist's wagon, where Fatine cat naps after first tending to her animals.

Anrete prowls around the edges of civilization, memorizing the lay of the land and noting any unique landmarks.

A quick visual inventory confirms the dwarf cleric with the medical supplies, two wagons full of lumber, and half a dozen farmers with their families round out the circle of wagons.

Watches are set: Jet, followed by Alexi and Beren, Caelnin takes the third, and Mikal the last. Tarketh gently wakes Fatine. (Listen and Spot rolls, please!)

First she gathers a small bundle of sticks. She finds a comfortable spot on the outside of the wagons, facing the wilderness with her back to the camp. She sets a small fire with the wood (w/ flint, tinder, and a bit of oil if necessary to get it started), and sits near it, watching her surroundings.

Once an hour, anytime she hears an unidentified noise, or anytime someone/thing approaches Tarketh's wagon, she gets up and walks 'round the wagon, inspecting it for trouble and shooing anyone/thing away from it.

Otherwise, she sits quietly, her dogs by her side, and her raven napping silently on a perch atop the wagon.

Jet patiently waits for Alexi to finish his rant about Garth before he replies, "Stand down Alexi, he has every right to speak to me in that manner. He is the acknowledged wagon master and by Pantheon loins I have swore to do as I am told for two years. I don't think he is so petty as to hold the dock scene against me this long or he would have me feeding the livestock instead of leading a scouting mission. The people around me are just advisors, I am responsible for making the final decisions on matters and I failed in this regard. I have learned a valuable lesson from his scolding. Nothing to be ashamed of." He pats Alexi on his armored shoulder, "Let's not let him down again, eh?"

Jet visit's the clerics wagons and describes to him the mules injuries and how it's constitution is lower then normal, "perhaps there is more you can do for it then myself, since I am not yet experienced enough for such healing."

Jet accepts the invitation to enjoy a meal by the blacksmiths fire. He passes around his skin of wine with dinner and then begins his watch. He stops by each fire that is present, "prepare for the cold, it is upon us this evening and perhaps for a few days."

OOC: Just out of curiousity, there was no response from Tarketh upon receiving the skinned carcass of the weasle, assuming the tanner sent the remains on to him on behalf of Fatine as Alexi requested. Alexi's deduction from Fatine's unique and odd 'items' displayed is that the body parts would come in handy for something. I though it was funny, anyway. :)

IC: After Jet gives a pat on the shoulder, Alexi eyes Jet back, but in a friendly maner, "He may have the right to, but it doesn't mean he's IN the right to. I still stand by our choice. But go figure, tomorrow, four miles further down, there may be a better one. You never know. However," and he grins, "we got a pretty pelt out of it, eh?"

Alexi shares the news about the pelts with the group adding, "I still don't know it's actual worth, but the tanner felt it is fairly valuable." He shows it to Anrete and Beren, "You two are far more skilled in determining the value of such things, how much do you think it's worth?"

Alexi has been too busy to notice the change in weather and what those more in tune with Nature are doing to prepare for it. However he does notice how cold it is getting when he gets up for his watch, so when his watch is over, he'll put Lobo's saddle blanket on Lobo and pull out his bedroll. Laying by Ned's camfire in his bedroll should keep him warm enough.

As Alexi's watch will be coming around soon enough and he doesn't want to get too comfortable yet, he stays chatting with Ned and his family (OOC: previous post telling the story of the Battle of the Dire Weasles), until his time for the watch arrives. Busy telling the story of the dire weasel combat to any who will listen Alexi doesn't see the farmer quickly wrap the putrid carcasses, signal one of his sons, and ask the lad to bury the remains. If the fighter persists, the farmer will explain that any creature that feeds on the life blood of another isn't fit for consumption by man, or beast.

Beren, Jet and Anrete identify the signs that signify a change in the weather and take the necessary steps to protect their animals, and themselves from the elements.

Caelnin gets a visit from the cleric sent by Jet. The dwarf with the symbol of Alemi hanging from a chain around his neck spares few words for the equally quiet sharpshooter., as he gently checks the mule's wound. "No permanent damage, but she bears no burdens for a week," he admonishes. "If'n yer need transport, ride wi' me tomorrow."

Most of the folk making up the forth ring of wagons share in the communal supper served up at the large central fire though a few families, and some introverted types set up their own camps. People are quiet. There is still a sense of excitement about the adventure, however a couple hard days on the road have taught people the value of a good night's sleep.

*********

Few are awake when the cleric/fighter takes the first watch, but Jet makes a point of stopping at each wagon, or campfire and quietly informing folks that a cold snap is imminent. Fatine is making her first inspection around the herbalist's wagon when the fighter passes by. Next is the light wagon handled by the seamstress. A feminine voice whispers (Jet only, please! He explains how when he finally got the courage to talk to her, their romance blossomed. And, how when Lollena's parents made arrangements for her to marry another, they decided to run away to the uncharted lands and start a new life. The couple both look at the cleric, as Lollena asks if Jet will bless their union in a marriage ceremony, once they arrive at Bryn Baraz,}) However, Fatine's sharp ears and proximity to the seamstress' wagon permit her to overhear the conversation. Caelnin
Thursday May 29th, 2008 6:10:04 AM

Thinking that Vilria doesn't need the extra weight piled onto her, says to the dwarf cleric "Thank you for this favor. Cleric's orders for the well being of an animal, and my friends, is one that I can live by."

------

Once everything is packed up and ready to go, Caelnin stays with the cleric, doing as he is told in unfamiliar territory. He doesn't bother taking out his bow in the making, as it might come off as a bit rude if he were to work on it (If he is able to). So instead, he tries to knock up a small conversation with the cleric, first asking what his name is, then why he wanted to go to Byrn Baraz. The conversation keeps his mind off the coldness of the day, and keeps his mind busy for a while.

------

Once reaching the next campsite, Caelnin says to the cleric "If I won't be able to let Vilria be able to carry heavy things for a week, will you allow me to ride with you whenever I need to? I have some other friends that have offered to watch over Vilria when on scouting missions, so I don't need much help on that front..."

When dawn arrives, Fatine stumbles to Tarketh's wagon. Exhausted from watching two nights ago, scouting for herbs the previous day, then watching again last night, she sinks onto whatever bedding is available and quickly falls asleep, passing the entire day by without even bothering with breakfast or lunch.

She finally wakes just in time for a late dinner, which she eats hungrily. Next, she makes sure her dogs have full stomachs. After caring for her animals, she calls to her raven, which alights on her shoulder, and goes for a walk around the camp to stretch her sore muscles. She and the crow walk around the outskirts of the wagons, Fatine chatting to the bird like an old friend, and the bird answering with the ocassional "Caw! Caw!"

Once night comes, Fatine does the same as the previous night, setting up her little area outside the wagons and ocassionally patrolling for Tarketh.

Beren rises the next morning, and immediately checks his surroundings. When he is aksed the value of the pelts gained from the beasts they killed, he shrugs his shoulders. "I never really sold my pelts much." (Knowledge 9--for appraise).

As the wagon train moves out, he takes it in turns to ride and walk with the wagons. He is learning who goes with which wagon, and wants to see those relationships, so that he can tie people together in family units. If possible he will even ask to ride on the back of a wagon for short periods to rest, and get to know people. He will quietly give advice for warmer camps, and care to be taken in cold weather.

Once in camp, he builds a small fire separate from the others, and come bedtime, he scrapes that fire aaside into the main fire, and makes his bed on top of that spot. Assuming that watches will remain the same, he prepares to take his turn when it is time.

Thursday May 29th, 2008 6:53:36 PM

The night passes coldly and Alexi is glad to have a bed roll. He makes a note to put up his tent the next night for added warmth.

That morning, before they move out, Alexi stops by Tarketh's wagon to see if he received the gift he had sent the herbalist, he is dismayed that it hadn't arrived yet. More puzzled than angy, he heads to the tanner's wagon. The tanner is hardpressed to explain to the fighter that all that 'good' stuff was not good at all. "Who's to say what a herbalist will do with it? They know all kinds of things to do with weird animal parts!" Alexi argues, but it is too late anyway, the carcass has already been buried.

Shortly after they start off down the path again, Alexi makes his way to Tarketh's wagon looking for Fatine. Tarketh informs him that she's asleep and it's best not awaken a sleeping witch. Alexi asks Tarketh to tell Fatine that the pretty claws he was going to have made into a necklace for her was thougthlessly thrown away by the tanner and he deeply appologizes for it.

The rest of the day he spends up front, not being in the mood to deal with the dust, and is impressed at the mileage they've made. That scouting group must be proud of themselves for gaining two miles of the four they had lost the day before. "Yeah, but they don't have a pelt either," he consoles himself, still sure that they had made the best choice, seeing that there was no good camping site four miles further than where they had stopped.

That night Alexi puts up his small tent to help shield him from the cold and leaves the padding that goes under the chain barding on Lobo for some extra warmth for the horse. If there is another group campfire he joins and asks if there is anyone that knows some good campire songs to help wash away the tiredness of the day.

He takes his watch as usual, coordinating with Beren a watch pattern and code word. The next morning, after rubbing Lobo down real good to make sure he's warmed up some, he starts another day of travel.

DM Bob & Carla
Friday May 30th, 2008 12:43:25 AM

Folk's heed Jet's warning, and most are bundled up against the unseasonably cold weather. Despite the cold, the sun shines in a bright blue sky. The trees continue to leaf out, and here and there under the canopy, early wildflowers brighten the shadows.

The cold seems to have firmed up the trail, and the caravan covers a good distance though the metal reinforced wooden wagon wheels ensure every rock and rut is felt. The gentle clinking of the glass cloches protecting plant specimens doesn't keep the exhausted witch awake. Fatine experiences a deep restorative sleep, dogs curled into kidney shapes on either side of her providing all the warmth she needs.

The cleric is a dwarf of few words, however Caelnin learns his name is 'Durak'. As a Shepherd of Alemi, he has been called to serve as physician and educator to his dwarven brethren working the mine site at Bryn Baraz, where he will also concern himself with the health and fitness of the settlers at the temple that is to be built for the settlement.

When Beren asks around, he finds he is quite welcomed to ride with Cairn, since the thin carpenter's apprentice has gone to help Lollena maneuver her wagon. There is enough room on the wooden bench on the front of the wagon for the driver and one passenger to sit. The herbalist lets the elf know he would enjoy his company as well. The sharp-eyed sharpshooter takes an inventory of the group for which he an his companions are responsible. In addition to the dwarf cleric with the medical supplies, two wagons full of lumber, Lollena and Pliny, and half a dozen farmers with their families, there is the matronly woman with her six 'daughters'. All in all a little over forty souls.

Alexi shows his pelt to any who wish to admire it. He learns from those who seem to be in the know that he might get a gold piece for the pelt if he was trying to sell it in the city, but that it might be more valuable crafted into a garment, or used as a rug in his new home in the settlement. The fighter moves up the line of wagons, near to the front, in order to avoid the dust. He earns a scowl of disapproval from Gath Turnbuckle, and the wagon master admonishes him, telling him he "shouldn't leave his group unprotected, to go gallivanting around the countryside."

Bundled in his winter gear, Anrete doesn't feel the cold. Bored by the monotony of an uneventful day, he explores the forest around the camp site, and returns with two wild rabbits for the stewpot.

The new campsite is big enough, but folks are warned against drinking the water unless it has been boiled for several minutes. Most decide to dip into barrels filled at the previous camp site. The large cooking fire draws more folks than the previous night, as the settlers try to stay warm. People talk quietly amongst themselves. No one seems to have brought an instrument, and though folks are starting to get to know one another, none are brave enough to sing a song or tell a story.

After a while folks head off to bed and the security detail set the watches. Tarketh retires, leaving the witch to her vigil. The night passes uneventfully.

(Please describe one day of activity through to supper time.)

This trip could become very monotonous if one did not take care.

The elven ranger's thoughts are kept to himself. After an uneventful night, including his turn on watch, Beren starts to look for ways to keep himself busy. As he rides along on guard with his bow in hand, he is watching for plant types that he knows to be edible (Knowledge nature 22). He gathers a few examples of these. He is also watching for what type of wildlife might be in the area (spot 25). Fresh meat would add to the cookpots nicely, and if he sees the chance (Hit AC 13 and 26) he will use his bow to bring down something nice for the table. To help in that area, he rides a wider path than the wagons, to remove himself slightly from the noise the train is making. These forays are never for very long, as he does not want to lose touch wwith the wagons in case of trouble.

If successful in his hunt, he will ask to place the carcass of whatever animal he shoots in the rear of one of the wagons, and once camp is made, he will quickly butcher it for the fire, saving hide or pelt to be traded later.

A few days ride on a wagon train, our bums are worse for wear

The cold night falls where trees are halls, breathing visible around .
We are heading to our hallowed home, Bryn Baraz is where we're bound.

Whatever Alexi answers, Fatine oddly turns her head from here to there, as if hearing a sound in the distance. She walks off after a moment, not answering anything further, then rounds to the back of a tent and stops. Stomping her foot on the soft earth, she yells, "NO!" then stalk off toward Tarketh's wagon, sulking in its shadows the rest of the evening.

The following night, Fatine makes her normal camp, keeping her dogs nearby. She makes her normal patrols, though this night she gives some noticeable glares in Jet's direction whenever he patrols nearby, although the glares seem to devolve into chuckles after he passes by.

Friday May 30th, 2008 10:59:35 PM

Alexi frowns a bit a the ONE gold piece he might get for the pelt. "Shows you what I know about pelts," he mumbles as he trudges away. "Only ONE measly gold piece. Oh well, it is still a pretty pelt, and it's looks that count. A trim for a cloak? A womans shawl? Hmm... Well, got plenty of time to come up with something."

Admonished by Garth, Alexi would normally have felt very bad about 'abandoning' his post. But not this time. He remembers Garths words very distinctively, "Follow the existing trail north and find a good spot with water no more than twenty miles ahead. " And Alexi did just that. A good spot with water, and it wasn't more than twenty miles. It was only sixteen, so what! They obeyed the orders to a tee and got chewed out.

To add to his mood, he knew Anrete rarely stayed within sight of the wagons, opting to wander around the woods here and there. THAT surely wasn't in keeping with orders, but Alexi didn't mind Anrete wandering around. It was Garth's inconsistency, and a Fist Captain would NEVER be inconsistent!

However in the end Alexi realized he really had no beef against Garth. It was something else bothering him and it was interfering with his orders. He resolved to stay back from then on and just stay out of Garth's way.

OOC: Just doing some roleplaying, getting into Alexi's Mailed Fist persona. No offense to Garth, eh?

That evening, approached by Fatine, he gulped as she placed her hand on his shoulder. A sigh of relief escaped as she explained that she couldn't accept the claw necklace anyway.

"Ah, I understand completely," he assures her. "We warriors feel the same way about our trophies too. Although I didn't know those were trophies," pointing at the oddities hanging about her garments. "I just thought they were uhmmm... 'pretty', er, decorations."

As Fatine leaves, Alexi feels sort of good about the chat. Getting to know Fatine better, and all the others too, was uplifting to his spirits. A Mailed Fist recruit builds very strong bonds with his regiment friends, something he has missed. But here's the opportunity to build new friendships. And that was more important than some 'love' thingy. If the skinny guy was more Lollena's type, that was fine with him. And now he knew what had troubled him the whole day would trouble him no more.

When Anrete comes back with some rabbits Alexi says encouragingly, "Good job Anrete. Better meat than wild weasle. And the pelts can be made into gloves, or ear muffs, and... oh, what am I saying, you know more about this stuff than I."

If Beren is also successfull in his hunt, Alexi congratulates him as well. But laughs heartily saying, "We are going to be better known as hunters than Security Detail."

With newly uplifted spirit, Alexi tried to join Jet in the singing. Not knowing the words, he just tried to match the tune, something not too difficult after the first stanza.

Perform (singalong) untrained: d20 = 16.

Alexi's day starts in his usual manner. First he puts on his armor and gear. Next he cares for Lobo, rubbing him down good to make sure his muscles are warmed up properly from the cold night. He puts on the padding, barding, and then saddle. With Lobo ready he eats some breakfast, and then looks for Jet for any instructions from Garth.

If there is no change in instructions, he goes around helping Jet check out all the wagons as they get hitched up, helping where necessary. As they head out, he follows his group of wagons, sometimes on the right, sometimes on the left, sometimes just behind. He takes a strip of cloth and ties it around his neck over his helmet neck guard to cover his nose and mouth from the dust.

He thus pratrols around the wagons, attentive but relaxed, lance at the ready, bow strapped to his back, and his meriad of other weapons hanging off his belt.

Upon reaching the designated campsite, he waits until all wagons have postioned themselves. He keeps an eye out for trouble from the woods before finally picking a spot to stake Lobo and make his own small camp, usually near Ned's wagon, as that's the one with his investment of farming and mining tools.

Once Lobo is taken care of, brushed and rubbed down, he joins the campfire supper, then gets a little shut eye before his watch. He does not sleep in his breasplate. He's done that a few times on forced marches but he knows that in the end it hinders more than helps. He does sleep in his padding that goes under the metal armor.

So far he has not barded Lobo for the night watches, so as to give the horse more rest, and himself also as it takes time to put it all on. But now that they are getting deep into the wilderness, he will start barding Lobo for the night watches as well.

OOC: I've tried to be thorough, but if I've missed something let me know.

The next day begins just as any day, the settlers bustling about, preparing a morning meal before readying to hit the trail. It is a cooler day as predicted and many in the caravan bundle themselves in blankets for protection from the biting wind. Other than the cold, and minor delays caused by a broken axle on one of the wagons, the day passes uneventfully. After almost 21 miles of travel, the wagons come to rest beside a lake. The water is clear and cold, and the cobble beach is scattered with larger boulders that once gathered, make for useful fire pits.

The mood around the camp is quiet and somber, the reality of what lies ahead on their long journey is now becoming apparent for many. More than one horse has pulled up lame, legs are chaffed from long hours in the saddle, wagons require repair, and the cold weather has dampened spirits. More than a few of the settlers can be heard grousing about the long days and short nights.

Beren provides some relief when he arrives with a sac full of wild onions and another plant known to him as wild cucumber, although the edible root looks and tastes nothing like a cucumber. Strapped to his saddle is the field dressed carcass of a small doe he had caught unawares during his day afield. The women in the wagons quickly deal with Beren's provisions and soon the smell of venison wafts through the camp. Jet further lifts the settlers spirits with his song about Bryn Baraz and the future it holds for all of them.

As the last of the venison is doled out along with steaming onions, leeks and wild cucumber, Garth Turnbuckle arrives. He comes directly to the point. "We've made good distance these last few days, but it's been hard on the horses and just as hard on some of the wagons. Tarketh and a few of the others have suggested we stay here an extra day to recoup. It's a good site. Tomorrow we rest, repair what's needed and regain our strength before moving on." With that he turns to leave.

The sense of relief is palpable. Settlers clap each other on the back, a few take up the lyrics of Jet's song , and a jug of very strong cider is passed about the campfire. A few of the ladies dance with some of the men and extra logs are thrown on the fire. Whether it is the alcohol, or pent up emotions, or both, the celebration continues into the evening.

Caelnin is pleased at Garth's announcement. Caelnin then moves off quietly to his cart and sets up a small camp and gets some rest, until he has to get up for his watch. "I still have to be diligent with my watches, even more so with the drunken party going on..."

The next day Caelnin helps out as much as he can, sharpening weapons, fine tuning bows or even learning a thing or two about cart fixing. He looks around camp to find something to do; it's better than working on his own goals for the moment.

Jet allows the others to celebrate without him. With that much liberal drinking around him, it is easy for him to get caught up in the moment, which would not do while he is on watch. However, once or twice during the night when he is alone he salutes the gods himself in his own manner, even spilling some on the ground to satisfy Ebyeron and his minions.

As Fatine scowls at him he merely smiles and bows as he continues. She is not likely to turn him into a toad any time soon, so he feels somewhat safe.

As others pick up his improvised tune he smiles and joins in. Part of being a priest is nurturing ones spirit. It appears the gods have blessed his tongue to do just that, although he seriously doubts he will be hearing it sung in the taverns of Floating City when he returns, it is a part of them all now.

Once his watch is over however, he begins to show a few of the youths a drinking game he picked up in the streets of Plateau City when he was not so much younger then he is now and parties into the night.

Beren ignores the revelry going on around him. He has found that most people don't want their fun spoiled by a face like his. He prepares his small bedroll and camp for the coming cold night, and takes his turn at watch. There are still a few celebrating during his watch which makes it hard to hear, but he keep shis eyes open and his weapons handy.

Alexi's years in the Fist tought him how to refrain from drinking, as dangers can pop up from anywhere at anytime. However he does take a swig or two to take a little of the chill out of the air. And the somber mood reminds him of his company after many days of forced marches.

As the news of a Rest Day lifts spirits, Alexi allows himself a little of fun and joins in the dancing, with the ladies, that is. If he manages to dance with Lollena, he's ellated the rest of the night, otherwise he just has fun and doens't let anything get to him, even seeing the skinny guy with Lollena doesn't bother him.

If the party is still going by the time his turn at Watch nears, he takes his leave and gets Lobo ready. Meeting up with Beren for Watch duty, he wonders what to do with his free time the next day. 'I wonder if Beren would teach me some of his hunting skills?'

By morning he knows what to do. He'll go searching for tree sapplings that would be suitable for making lances or longspears. (don't know what I need to roll just to find one if there are any in the area, but he'll just Take 10 or Take 20, as he's got all day? How many does he find, if any?)

Alexi Spot 6, (the big bonfire is giving off too much light for him to adjust his eyes to the dark shadows)

Fatine [AC 12, HP 10/10] Dogs [AC 16, HP 13/13, 13/13]
Monday June 2nd, 2008 8:24:14 PM

Fatine shrugs as she overhears Garth's decision. Sleeping all day, it makes little difference to her whether the wagon is moving or not. As many of the travelers relax and revel in their day off, she sits to the side with her dogs, absently watching the festivies while petting the dogs and talking quietly to the crow, which alternates between squawking on her shoulder and flitting among the partiers.

She does in fact sleep for a good part of the day, though she stays up a bit later in the morning to help Tarketh with his various chores, and rises a bit earlier than normal to do the same.

Otherwise, it is standard procedure for her each night.
