The Children of Chaos return to Heranmar, few of them satisfied about the story or implications of the Dame's Ring in Kat's pouch. Yet they agree to concentrate on a threat closer to hand, the Cornugon, the Horned Devil loose in Gateway Downs.

(ooc: Making Firn'gear's move in order to move story ahead)

But to deal with the devil, only Firn'gear can hope to scry its location, and that is no mean attempt. The gnome wizard may be powerful, but he must overcome the devil's Spell Resistance (SR:28) and then overcome its Will (Will Save +15) to be able to see its location well enough for a Greater Teleport to bring him there. Even more, one failed Scry means the gnome has to wait until the next day to attempt again. Using a small spell of Fox's Cunning before scrying enables Firn'gear to boost his chances. Even so, it takes 6 days before both circumstances achieve the desired results. (Day1: SR 28, Will 32, Day2: SR 16; Day3: SR 30 Will 33; Day4: SR 16; Day5 SR 25, Day6: SR31 Will 17!!!)

Coming out of his scry, Firn'gear knows enough to Greater Teleport to the Horned Devil. It is in an underground chamber that seems to have once been natural, but has been enlarged to suit its new occupant. The most interesting thing about the cavern is it is half a black basalt type stone, and half a greyish stone shot with a pink quartz vien. Very unusual.

Firn'gear's careful scan of the area can tell that there is a tunnel leading from the cavern, the cavern is completely devoid of any light, and there doesn't seem to be any other noises other than the breathing of the devil as he carves out what looks to be the beginning of an infernal alter and pentagram. The pentagram is half on each type of rock.

Kazak
Friday May 23rd, 2008 11:12:49 PM

Nodding at Peerimus's choices " bout time we got moving " grwols Kazak quietly as he scuffs his feet on the ground

Peering at the light fingered due the dwarf smiles at their enthusiasm ..... stepping near Kat as she shows the wand " thats the spirit .....that will come in handy ...and don't forget your bows ....just shoot and move ..
...it's always nice for us sword swingers to know we have fire support " grins Kazak

"I'm ready .... you ready Durgan ??"

Savin
Saturday May 24th, 2008 12:18:05 AM

Savin grins in anticipation as they ready for battle. "Don't suppose anyone has a light spell handy? Sounds like it is going to be pretty dark. So who is going? Can I drink an enlarge potion before we go or will that affect the teleport spell

Savin will drink several potions before they go to buff himself up and prepare for battle but only if he knows that they will be teleporting directly to the cave and a quick battle. He will apply silversheen to his gloves and drink a potion of +4 barkskin and Potion of magic circle protection against evil. If he can without effecting the teleport he will suck down a potion of enlarge. If he can't he will have it ready to go in his hand.

"Firn'gaer or Jurgen, can you cast a haste on us before we go?"

Peerimus and Yorrick
Saturday May 24th, 2008 12:30:06 PM

"Remember it is just the five of you. Firngaer, Savin, Kazak, Durgan and Trace and you will have maybe 12 seconds. Do not waste them when you arrive by drinking potions and other preparations. I have prepared several enhancing spells and protections for you. You are making a full offensive assault. If Firngaer's anchoring spell works then you can change tactics to a more balanced approach.

Peerimus will cast Protection from Energy Fire on each of them (120)
Peerimus will Cast Barkskin on each of them (+5 Natural Armor)
Peerimus will cast Freedom of Movement on Kazak, Durgan and Savin
Peerimus will Cast Daylight on Kazak's and Durgans Belt buckles

Durgan (Sub/Al)  d20+11=24 ;
Saturday May 24th, 2008 9:03:46 PM

Days draw onto days. Durgan appears for each scrying, and after each scrying fails, he retires to the smithy to work on a weapon. On the first day, the separate parts clearly mark the weapon as a polearm of some kind. The second day marks its form as clearly that of a halberd. On the third day the weapon is complete, and the dwarven smith prepares the components to turn his work into the well balanced work of a master.

Day four passes on to day five, but the stones teach a dwarf patience, and on the sixth day that patience is rewarded.

"I'm ready brother." In one hand Durgan holds a potion. It's the same color and consistency as the one in Savin's hand. "There's gonna be a reckoning."

Rolls and Actions
Craft(Weapon Making) 24 x 15 = 360 vs 100 for a week to complete.

Active Effects: PoE-Fire/120 (130min?), Barkskin +5 (130min?), FoM (130min?), Daylight (130min?)

OoC: Anyone have Align Weapon? It's my impression that to overcome the Devil's DR weapons have to be *both* Silver *and* Good.

Jurgen
Sunday May 25th, 2008 3:22:49 PM

Jurgen shows up, much as Durgan, although he spends his days speaking with Holly or watching, Savin permitting, the monks as they train.

"Peerimus, I know you want them to go now. But the chamber may be unique and perhaps we could ask around?" Of course, the druid is eager to get on with it, so Jurgen will cast his buffs spells and then rush back to town. "Good luck, friends."

Jurgen will cast Protection from Evil on each of them [Extended - 22 minutes].
Jurgen will cast Haste on each of them [Extended - 22 rounds].

Jurgen goes to Holly's story asking her who would know enough about the area to find the cave with the black and grey cave with pink quartz.

(OOC: If you five still end up going right now, Jurgen has a +1 Holy Rapier and it's currently, as always, a +3 weapon with the daily Greater Magic Weapon casts. With an application of Silversheen, it would fit that profile Durgan. Anyone who wants can take it.)

Savin
Monday May 26th, 2008 12:52:00 AM

Savin waits until he knows that they are truly ready to go and then he does his own buff potions and silversheen as well as accepting the others.

Peerimus and Yorrick
Monday May 26th, 2008 11:31:42 AM

Peerimus stops short at Jurgens Comments, "Eager for them to go by themselves? Absolutely not. Not having thought of the immaculate alternative you just came up, yes quite guilty. Firngaer knows where it is and now yes Jurgen let us see if we can find out if that cave is a local landmark."

Peerimus absolutely agrees about splitting up and canvassing town to see if anyone can identify a local cave with teh rock formations nad colors Firngaer saw.

If we can all go non magically that would be far superior to sending the fighters and wishing them well

Tying Loose Ends [DM SteveK]
Monday May 26th, 2008 6:51:10 PM

(ooc: Anyone have contact with Rich? I don't want to jump Firn'gear into this situation without Rich here, but I'll take him over for an NPC in order to keep the story running.)

With the location of the Devil found, Jurgen's thoughts bring Peerimus' to the boil, perhaps they can all get there! Certain that whatever the devil is doing is still going to keep him there for at least a few more days, the Children take 24 hours of precious time to see if it is known to the people of Heranmar. The Children of Chaos know that the everyday people of Heranmar won't know anything outside of thier immediate area, so they canvass the few folks who are known to have travelled about: Jala the Monk, Holly the General Store Manager, Selenie Quendeck[b/] the Head of the Heranmar Council, and the [b]old cleric of the Crones near the Standing Stones. The older members of the CoC would really like to speak with Donk the Dwarf, but he has not been seen in the town or his best friend Holly since the elf-dwarf rumors have started...

It is quickly apparent the unusual stone juxtaposition is not from the immediate area. The old Crones cleric tells his visitor that that sort of formation is common when two lands come together, like the Gateway Downs and the Sargrass. Holly admits that Donk has made mention of most of the mountain ranges of the Southern Continent are just like that, with two types of stone sheared off and together, but she doesn't know that particular type. Selenie knows nothing: all her early year adventures were above ground, she says. It is Jala that has the best information; knowing that dwarf miners near Fort Wayfarer come in with polished stones of half black and quartz. "The school had one itself for meditation to represent balance. Not magical, no, but it must have come from thier delvings in the mountains between the Gateway Downs and Dre Moria. Yet there is a thousand miles of those mountains. To find one place among them...." she shrugs and shakes her head.

Without a clear location, the CoC are back to the plan of sending Firn'gear and the four best damage dealers into the caverns. Preparations are made (please state in posts) and the others gather in Peerimus' grove to wish good luck to the ones going to confront the devil.

Savin doesn't need to use his potion of prot.v.evil or the barkskin, but tries to put on the Silversheen before Firn'gear is ready for the Greater Teleport. For some reason, it doesn't want to stay on. (ooc: gloves are not a 'weapon') Just as Savin is getting the most frustrated and KNOWING that he NEEDS this for the upcoming fight, something strange happens... The Broken Spiral tattoo flares and the Silversheen adheres to the gloves!

Firn'gaer
Monday May 26th, 2008 8:20:41 PM

Firn'gaer readies his preparations himself. "Sorry, there was a back-up at the Catacombs. It seems there was only one clerk there helping, well, all of us."

"I'm ready to go. I'll cast fly, using my extend rod, on Kazak and Durgan to increase their mobility."

When everyone is good to go, Firn'gaer will cast his final spells and then cast Teleport.

Note: He leaves Rufus behind and asks that the tavern owner watch him. Firn'gaer pays the tavern owner enough money, 30 gp, to keep Rufus in sweet biscuits for a month. He will ask Peerimus to look after the trouble maker if he doesn't come back.

Kit'Miara
Monday May 26th, 2008 10:12:21 PM

Kit quickly checks all her gear to make sure she did not lose anything. She finds a few new things but nothing important, nothing at all like her sisters ring. She looks at the group and stands as tall as a halfling can and says "OK I am ready to go when you are"

Peerimus and Yorrick
Monday May 26th, 2008 11:00:23 PM

Peerimus shakes his head at the Halfling, "You're not going. Either am I, your sister or Jurgen. We simply have no way of getting there. This is going to be thier fight." he looks over at his brothers in arms, and fellow heroes of the Southern continent. Set eyes exuding the power contained with his knowledge of those he calls Father and Mother. "I will be watching Kazak. Aid each other. One or two powerful strikes is better than a flurry of misses. Move get position and do not let him distract you with other creatures he brings in. Concentrate on the horned devil, but all really depends on you Firngaer really. May Father guide your hand." Then the group is gone and Peerimus is moving to the clear pool to scy in and observe the battle.

Kit'Miara
Monday May 26th, 2008 11:23:37 PM

Kit looks at Peerimus and sighs "I know, I was just hoping" she says. She looks to the others and wishes them each luck and that they should hurry and get back.

Durgan (AC 37/38w/PfE, HP 182/182)(Sub/Al)
Tuesday May 27th, 2008 9:21:10 AM

With an eye trained from years of weapon's craft, Durgan turns the needle thin weapon over in the thick fingers of his meaty hands. The metal catches the light.

"Tis a fine weapon, Jurgan," he says, handing it back to its owner. "Noble, with powerful lines. But I've spent years training with me good axe, and these hands just wouldn't feel the same with any other, if ye take my meaning."

"Steel and stone, bruther," Durgan replies. "This beasties gone into the earth, and tis the earth that's looking to us to cleanse it of such foulness."

The dwarf turns his gaze to Firn'gaer and nods his readiness.

Active Effects: PoE-Fire/120 (130min?), Barkskin +5 (130min?), FoM (130min?), Daylight (130min?), PfE (22min), Haste (22rnds), Fly (26min), Holding potion of Enlarge Person

Kat'Miara
Tuesday May 27th, 2008 9:22:58 AM

Grinning at Kit, she says slyly, "Well, at least we get to plan our fun here more. No worries, sis. We can try out our new toys later..."

Peerimus and Yorrick
Tuesday May 27th, 2008 9:51:18 AM

"Trace it is a worthy idea. I had thought of it, but I do not wish you to do so. The tree would die rapidly, I have already sacrificed such a life for us and do not see the need to do so again. The devil is powerful yes but perhaps save Jurgen I do not even think the rest of us would be much use if we did go." the druid shakes his head, "No do not put down the tree unless all is nearly lost."

Savin
Tuesday May 27th, 2008 11:27:22 AM

Savin grumbles as he fights with the silversheen but relaxes when the tattoos flare and it finally adheres. He pulls out a potion of enlarge to be sucked down as soon as they arrive if he gets the chance and readies his spike chain thinking of some fun tactics of his own to try and aid the group.

Savin just nods at his instructions and the advice of the others and readies himself hopefully a very quick battle.

Jurgen
Tuesday May 27th, 2008 1:09:00 PM

"Sorry my idea bore no fruit, Peerimus." The paladin waits at Peerimus' grove, frustrated at the necessary separation of the group. He'd been back with the Children mere weeks and already he felt the strength of their connection. While each member of the group was strong in their own right, their true power lay in the Chaos bond that tied them together. But the druid was right, there were no options left. The devil had to be stopped and now. "Good luck friends. May Domi empower your axe and bow and fist."

As Firn'gaer casts the spell, Jurgen pushes his thoughts into the Chaos tattoo. While the paladin wouldn't be joining the fight that didn't mean he couldn't help. The Crones were unable to watch the whole Southern Continent, but if Jurgen could get their attention, he could let them know about the coming battle. And who knows, maybe they could help swing it in the Children's favor. While it wasn't very likely, at the very least, it was a comfort to do something.

Chamber of Two Stones rd0 [DM SteveK]  15d6=62 ;
Tuesday May 27th, 2008 1:39:36 PM

Firn'gear gathers the designated fighters about him as the others look on. With a day between the Scry and the Teleport, the devil may be anywhere, though the intelligent gnome bets it is somewhere between the pentagram it was inscribing and the tunnel. With a final tug of his magics, Firn'gear, Trace, Savin, Kazak, and Durgan vanish.... And the Broken Spirals flare on the four left behind as Peerimus, Jurgen, Kit, and Kat are also wrenched to the confontation!!!

The Children of Chaos reappear in the two-stone chamber. From the two Daylight Spells on the dwarfs beltbuckles, it is easy to see the entire chamber. It is as Firn'gear described it, half black basalt, half gray-and-pink. The pentagram is in the center of the chamber and the tunnel out is to the south-west. The devil has been busy, for in addition to the completed pentagram, there are five statues at the corners of the chamber in alignment with the pentagram; blocky geometric figures in poses of attention.

No. Wait. There are FOUR statues. The large hulking form in the north-west corner is the Horned Devil himself!

Trace (who planned for attacking the same round Firn'gear cast Teleport) is fast enough to find the devil and take action, letting his arrows fly. Flat-footed, all four strike true and bury themselves deeply in the armored body (80 hit points).

The Cornugon screams at the strike of a silvery/good arrow, and turns around to stare at the light and heroes invading his lair. "By all the Laws of the Wold, how could you have found me???" Unwrapping his spiked chain, it narrows its eyes, and a fireball erupts in the middle of the Children of Chaos. Firn'gear, Savin, Trace, Durgan, and Kazak save (DC 19) (62 hit points, 31 for save)

Savin easily evades the fireball taking no damage and tries to decide if he should just charge or suck down his potion. He decides on the later and sucks down the potion growing as he moves towards the devil stopping at H11 and denying the Horned devil an AOO. Savin has his own spiked chain out and ready for the devil or any other creature to come in range. (I believe the range is 20' when enlarged)

Bathed in fire. The heat flares all around, but Peerimus' woodland magic makes it feel like naught but a cooling stream. Durgan faces the same choice as Savin, but the dwarf decides differently. He drops the potion to the ground, and pulling loose his axe, he charges in at the devil.

"FOLLOW ME IN BRUTHER! I'LL CLEAR THE WAY!" Durgan shouts. Flying over the ground, the dwarven defender pulls to himself all of the defensive tricks he can muster as he draws the devil's fire to himself.

Despite his focus on defense, Durgan's strike hits true. What a shame that his axe wields not the goodness with which to give the thing more than a minor scratch.

Jurgen  d20+8=24 ; d20+17=37 ;
Tuesday May 27th, 2008 8:41:11 PM

As the chaos powers drag him through the teleport spell, Jurgen's instinct is to struggle against it. He was certainly not prepared for a fight. That instinct fades very quickly as the fireball crashes down on the five Children. Jurgen takes half a step forward to throw Firn'gaer out of the way, before remembering Peerimus' fire protection spell. No point in injuring himself when the gnome would be unharmed.

While he moves by the devil's altar and statues, Jurgen wonders at their purpose. He guesses some sort of spell and reaches into the far corners of his mind to see if it strikes familiar or poses an immediate threat [Arcane Knowledge Check - d20+8=24, Spellcraft Check - d20+17=37].

When the dwarves charge forward, Jurgen runs alongside them but stops before they do in order to apply a coat of silversheen to his powerful rapier into a demon-ready blade. And then he prepares to rush forward, once again...

Trace then trains his eye again on the foul creature and lets go another four arrows streaking at their target hoping to find a true spot burry themselves in.

Seeing the others arrive, Trace gives the others battle commands. "Savin is moving in behind, the brothers are moving on the flanks, Jurgen and Peerimus can head straight on. Me, Kit, Kat and Firn'gaer will offer support where needed. As for now, no support needed, all go offensive and lets try and overwhelm the devil!" Trace normaly reserved even for an elf lets go a battle cry as his four arrows streak ahead. He quickly readies himself for another volly.

Peerimus and Yorrick  d20+14=23 ;
Wednesday May 28th, 2008 8:04:38 AM

Peerimus's stomach wrenches, a feeling his mind tells him, happens far too often. It also tells him what is happening even as the cavern becomes his knew locallity. The Devil is surprised and the fireball he knows will do nothing to those he protected, but the great symbol in the floor and staues about him are what holds his attention. His only unanswered question is whether or not the abyssal horror will need to activate his preparations by spell or if the guardians will simply spring to life. There was little, if anything he could do directly to the devil nor could anything he summon do much. But he could attempt to stop the creatures likely first major offensive move, Summoning assistance.

Peerimus readies to counter the Devil casting any spell...Greater Dispel Magic 23

Savin evades the fireball, drinks an enlarging potion, and pulls his spiked chain to take a standoff against the equally large and armed Horned Devil (location: H11)

Durgan is engulfed in the flame but emerges unscathed, and he is rewarded by a scowl from the Horned Devil. Using all his defensive tricks, the dwarf rushes at the devil, inviting the blow from the vicious spiked chain, which barely misses, whistling over the dwarf's head. (1 Hero Point for Durgan). His axe strikes home, (4 hp) (location: H,5)

Kazak is also caught in the fire and is equally unaffected. With the enlarged Savin in front of him and wishing to get into a flanking position, the dwarf brother is unable to charge ( no +2 attack , -2 Ac), but is able to flank (+2 attack), and strikes with the Stone Sword of Karak Nor. (9hp) (location: E,6)

Firn'gaer is completely unaffected by the fire due to his scarab. He takes aim and a green beam flies from the diminuitive wizard, striking the Horned Devil. Green flickers over its body, and then steadies to a green light encasing the Devil! (location: J,15)

Jurgen rushes by the pentagram and glances at the statues as he splashes silversheen on his rapier. The pentagram is inscribed into the solid stone, and there is no raised dias, alter, or other contrivance. From Jurgen's store of knowledge, he doesn't see the immediate purpose of either the statues or pentagram, though he does know that the magic circle is often used for summonings and bindings... The Protector is able to make it next to Savin to be ready for the next surge. (location: K,10)

Kit'Miara stands still and pulls her wand to aim at the Horned Devil. (location: O,18)

Kat'Miara tumbles towards the statue behind her (the only possible place of concealment), and finds her own stick... (location: O,21)

Trace avoids the fireball and begins adjusting the battleplan with the arrival of the others, then fires more arrows at the now-aware devil. Lithe for such a big creature, the evil outsider avoids every shot! (location: L,17)

Peerimus decides to be ready for defense and prepares to nullify any spell from the devil. (location: M,19)
..................

As the green light settles on the devil, it begins to laugh, "Your puny spell has done nothing!", it roars, and then looks at the satisfaction in Firn'gear's eyes. The next roar is not so pleasant, and momentarily deafens all in the cavern. Hatred pouring out of its eyes, the Horned Devil attacks.

Stepping forward, the spiked chain whistles at the large form of Savin, and then the devil turns quickly, biting at Durgan with his tail striking at Kazak.

Savin is struck only once by the evil chain, striking him hard across the chest (AC: 28, 36hit, 19 Dam: 25 + Save Fort DC 27 or stun d4 rounds)

Durgan and Kazak are both missed, but both have to save vs the devil's Fear Aura (Will DC 23) or be shaken (--2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks) and flee the area.

Recalling the possibility of a summoning circle, Jurgen gives a quick glance to the Children behind him. "If you move closer, try to break the pentagram. We don't want any unexpected guests." And then to the wizard. "Nicely done, Firn'gaer!" With his sword equipped to properly attack the devil, the paladin jumps forward, rolling under the deadly chain and into combat range (Square I-7) [Tumble Check (Half-speed to avoid AoE) - d20+16=22 - Success]. He knows that, without sufficient time to prepare defense, the devil will have no trouble attacking him, so Jurgen does his best to make his attacks count.

PROTECTION FROM EVIL SPELL QUESTION
Wednesday May 28th, 2008 10:38:58 PM

Second, the barrier blocks any attempt to possess the warded creature (by a magic jar attack, for example) or to exercise mental control over the creature (including enchantment (charm) effects and enchantment (compulsion) effects that grant the caster ongoing control over the subject, such as dominate person). The protection does not prevent such effects from targeting the protected creature, but it suppresses the effect for the duration of the protection from evil effect. If the protection from evil effect ends before the effect granting mental control does, the would-be controller would then be able to mentally command the controlled creature

Dominate person is a enchantment(compulsion){mind effecting) spell page 224 phb

Fear is a Necromancy [fear, mind effecting] spell page 229 phb

Protection from evil 266 phb

both are mind effecting , so my questions is does the fear take effect while protection from evil spell is in effect or does it over ride it ???

if it over rides it then post above is good , if Fear spell is surpressed then i'll post Kazak's attack later , just let me know which ..... no worries either way .... :-)

you can delete this later

Peerimus and Yorrick - Sub/Al
Sunday June 1st, 2008 9:34:00 AM

There's always a stillness after the fall. It's a stillness full of relief, mixed with triumph, and shot through with veins of death. A mournful low from his life long friend draws Peerimus out of the moment. He puts a comforting hand upon the bear's massive shoulder.

"I think we need to find out as much as possible about just what the devil was doing here before we destroy anything, Trace. Could you go out the tunnel and see if you can determine where this place is? On the chance that it might have significance."

"Well done, Firn'gaer, old friend, on binding the devil to this place. Can you tell anything from the configuration of this ritual?"

"The creature came into the Wold and immediately began setting this up. To me, that speaks of a very specific purpose. I don't think that it came through to this world by chance."

"Can you tell what sort of creatures this was meant to summon? More to the point, can you tell how many might have been summoned? I'd hate to think that there is a force upon another plane with plans to send an army here."

Kat'Miara
Sunday June 1st, 2008 3:05:29 PM

Looking at the floor, and the layout, she traces the lines on the floor, going from one statue to another, trying to get in her head what seems to be niggling at it.

"What am I missing?" she all but mumbles to herself. At each point, she looks up into the awful statue's face, before turning to go down the next line, until she's back at the charred ground, where the Demon was vanquished.

"I wonder..."

There's not a lot I can offer to the search, unless you want me to summon an archon hound again, maybe ask if they've seen anything like this?" He looks to Peerimus for approval and, if getting it, casts Summon Monster v to once again bring an Archon Hound. He doubts the combat-oriented archon would appreciate the fight being over, but at least it'd be more help than the paladin otherwise had to offer.

Looking towards the tunnel, Jurgen muses out loud. "Getting back is going to be a hassle. Although still manageable, providing we're still on the Southern Continent..."

Savin is happy that the devil is dead but appalled at his performance during the last combat. He vows to himself to put more practice time in and starts looking around the cave with the others hoping to spot something of interest. He will move over to the statues have expecting them to be golems and inspect them closely. "Why would a devil make statues?"

Durgan grunts as the demon falls and turns to dust. "Harumph. Good riddance to that beastie." Durgan wanders around to make sure there are no more enemies present. He is especially careful not to step on anything resembling a magic circle. "So, why do ye think the durned tattoos brought all of us here eh?

"Destroying the research would be unwise." He says to Trace. "This devil was summoned as a result of the coming Migration. I think it would be prudent to learn what was being summoned from the large circle."

He takes a look at the room with his magically enhanced eyes. He will go over the room with see invisibility, arcane sight, and read magic.

"My thought as well Kazak, which is what worries me, because we were not presented much threat from the devil. Now we have some time. Let's have a very thorough search of this chamber. The fiend came here and immediately went to work creating foul likenesses of his kind and masters as well as the magic circle upon the floor. He did so for a reason, not simply to make theses caves more like home."

Peerimus moves to stand by the cave passage leading out. [Spot 25, Listen 24]

Chamber of Two Stones[DM SteveK]
Tuesday June 3rd, 2008 2:41:11 PM

The search is on in the chamber.

The worries of some about the relative easy time the group had over the devil hangs in the air, but soon the wisdom of others makes some assumptions. Unlike last fight, THIS time, there were several silver and good weapons to drastically hurt the evil outsider. So too, Firn'gaer's spell not only stopped the Horned Devil from teleporting around, but stopped it from summoning any help, both of which were critical in defeating the monstrosity.

The other worry is why the Marks of Chaos should bring everyone to the chamber. What is important here if it wasn't defeating the devil? Questions plauge the mind of the Children of Chaos...

Firn'gaer does a scan with his see invisibility, arcane sight, and read magic abilities. He automatically ignores the various auras cast by the other CoC and thier equipment. There is nothing invisible in the room, and there is no magical writings for the gnome to read. The four completed statues have no magical auras on them. However, the pentagram glows with a strong magical aura of some sort of spell. To determine more, Firn'gaer is going to have to check his memory and experiences. (ooc: roll a Spellcraft and/or Knowledge Arcana skill checks please)

Kazak's check of the stonework confirms what Jala the Monk speculated; these are two huge strata of stone sliced perfectly and placed together without any stress or pressure; almost like a child with placing building blocks together.

Kat and Savin check out the statues after Firn' says they are unmagical. One (the one the devil was at when the CoC arrived) is only a uncut block of stone. Three of the others are rough cut, vaguely humanoid, nothing really to see. The fifth one is better made, and Savin supposes that it could eventually become a golem or animated statue that he's fought in the past, and probably to protect whatever the devil was doing here. Left uncomplete, it is unlikely you will ever know...

Peerimus checks the passageway out. It too is pitch dark, lit only by the refracted illumination from the dwarf brothers' belt buckles. By listening carefully, the druid is able to hear a windy sussurus and the occasional clank of what would sound like metal links against stone.

If they do, Savin will start heading down the tunnel for around 30' to see what he can see.

"I believe what we are looking at in the rock here is the result of the Powers' migration of our lands. Kingdoms and sections of land literally lifted and replaced to each other cleanly and precisely. If so, not too far out of this complex will be one of the lands that directly borders ours." With Savin moving towards the exit with the halflings in tow, Peerimus levels out his staff like a gate.

"They can see no better than you or I Savin and I don't think it wise to sending more blazing light down this passage to annouce our arrival. We are close to foreign lands and I hear the clinking from that direction. Mining possibly and I don't want to wander in to someones mining operation without knowing who they are first and that means no light past here."

Peerimus looks to Jurgen and Firngaer, "Can either of you magicall scout ahead of us without the need for light. Clairaudience or Clairvoyance?"

Chamber of Two Stones[DM SteveK]
Wednesday June 4th, 2008 1:41:27 PM

Firn'gaer studies the pentagram with his amazing intellect and is assisted in the odd suggestion by Jurgen (good use of Aid Another!). Despite the curious halfling poling her head over Firn'gaer's shoulder, the wizard is able to come to a few conclusions. First of all, the pentagram is not for summoning anything, it is for binding. Specifically, it is binding the two types of stones together sufficient to unbreakably weld the rock for about a mile radius. Firn'gaer speculates that the statues would have had additional spells put on them that would eventually been able to augment the key spell. The specific spells are not in Firn'gaer's repitiore, and suggests Divine as well as Arcane sources.

Savin, Durgan, and Kazak line up at the entrance of the tunnel, thinking about taking a scouting walk. Peerimus soon comes over opening his mouth to say this is a bad idea, but has to break off. The Daylight spells on the brothers' beltbuckles are sufficient to light the entire corridor. The tunnel only delves into the rock for 100 feet and ends suddenly at a wall. Chained halfway down the side of the tunnel is a small cage with some scaley winged creature inside. The movement of the creature is causing the chains to clink.

As the light strikes through the tunnel, the small thing in the cage gives a hiss and rapidly moves its head up and down as though excited. A voice speaks inside the minds of Durgan, Kazak, Savin, and Peerimus: "I hope you brought something to eat?"

Its' Fluffykins, the pseudodragon familiar of Randall!!

"Great. Another durned wizard. I wonder where Randall is and what kind of trouble has he gotten himself into?" Savin's face also lights up in a grin and he skips down the tunnel to see the caged little dragon. "Is Randall here too? How did you get here?" Something in the back of Savin's mind cautions the impetueous monk and he looks around the cage pretty carefully wondering about traps,

"Kit...Kat...wanna check this out for us?"

As the Children move down the tunnel, Jurgen is unable to escape an uneasy feeling. The open cavern was one thing, but the more confined space made him uncomfortable. He draws his sword as the group walks, peering in the low light all the young man can do is take one step after another.

At the sight of Fluffykins, Jurgen eases up somewhat. But he looks to the other group members, gauging their reactions and mirroring them.

Firn'gaer stands puzzled at what he's found. "Why would you want to bind the rock together . . . or more precisely, why would the devil want to bind the rock together?" Firn'gaer strokes his beard as he tries to figure out the purpose; then he pauses for a moment and turns to the halfling. "Oh, may I help you . . . what am I looking at? Well, the simple version is that this a binding circle, which is used to keep a summoned creature," he points to the large pentagram on the floor, "from escaping. In this case, it appears that the binding circle is being used to bind together the land for quite a distance around this place, but for what purpose, I don't know."

ooc sorry everyone my grandmother went into hospital and things have been nutty can someone quickly sum up what is happening in the fight and I will jump in if that is ok

Chamber of Two Stones[DM SteveK]
Thursday June 5th, 2008 2:45:59 PM

The fight is over and the horned Devil has been destroyed. Firn'gaer has discovered that the devil's preparations were trying to bind the black and gray stone formations together. Speculations by Peerimus is that the two different rocks are like when two lands are placed together on the Southern Continent, and that the spell is for binding these two lands. Others have found a cage with Fluffykins in the Tunnel. Fluffykins is the pseudodragon familiar of a former member of the CoC; a wizard named Randall whose last known location was the Star Mages Guild in Hook City...

And now back to our story...

Kat is able to bypass the lock and free Fluffykins who swoops through the air in gratitude. His telepathy makes it easy for him to *talk* with everyone in Common. And it allows him to eat tidbits and get petted while talking at the same time, too!

"I was almost to Heranmar when this Horned Devil popped up right in front of me. I thought I was dead, but the devil only grabbed me, had a one-way conversation in a language I don't know and then popped away. I was completely in his hand and couldn't see, but it popped a LOT before it ended up on a mountainside and stuffed me in that cage. It left me there about a day before it popped me into this tunnel."

When the inevitable question of why Fluffykins was flying towards Heranmar comes up, the dragon places his eyes on Firn'gaer. "Randall sent me to find Firn'gaer with a message. The Star Mages of the Southern Continent are having a Grand Council to discuss the Elf and Dwarf War. Randall thought that Firn'gaer and the Children of Chaos would want to attend."

Peerimus and Yorrick
Thursday June 5th, 2008 5:26:33 PM

Peerimus Turns to Yorrick and begins talking to him, "You would Bind the rock together to prevent them from being seperated." Peerimus taps his staff to the ground and shifts his weight, "Why?" he looks to Yorrick and nods, "Because you're against the side that would see the land split and that would be the Powers."

"So the devil is against the Powers. No surprise to Yorrick there you say. Fair enough, but do you know the stories of why the Powers shuffle the lands?" The druids eyes sparkle as he defeats the ursines arguement.

"It is said that civilization will eventually destroy itself. Civilizations grow, thrive, become decadant and fall. That is how they work over the long term Yorrick. that is why I do not so much care for them, but that is also not up for debate right now."

Yorrick grunts and paws the stone. "The stories say that to prevent this endless circle, The Powers rearrange the entire continent. Litterally rewriting the map. With trade routes, allies, enemies and all sorts of other things now on the 'To Do' list of every kingdom. Marching armies about and such becomes far less a concern."

Yorrick grunts again, "Precisely and so there you have a possible reason the Devil sought to bind the rocks."

They split the land to prevent the destruction of mankind through man's own self destruction. So you bind the land together to prevent the Powers from seperating them and thus the war leads to its ultimate end I suppose."

Firn'gaer
Thursday June 5th, 2008 9:31:27 PM

Firn'gaer concurs with Peerimus thoughts on the binding circle. "I'm not sure if it is necessarily against the Powers, but if the Migration is a natural occurrence of this continent, then binding the land together so that it doesn't shift a portion of it may weaken or worse yet cause a rift. A rift that will unleash a fiend worse that the devil we've just faced." He pauses and strokes his beard in Firn'gaer fashion. "But for now all we have are unproven theories and conjecture, and I would leave it at that."

He looks at his hand and the recent flare of the Chaos Mark. "Is it just me or is this just one more coincidence in the growing number that coincide with this impending Migration and our brands?" He says as he looks at the Mark ever so curious on its true meaning. "We brought order to Chaos, and now it seems that we are to be the catalyst for the coming upheaval of the Southern Continent."

We are an enigmatic oxymoron, he thinks.

"Yes masterful mischief maker, I would most certainly be interested in attending the meeting in Hook City." He says to Fluffykins.

He looks to Peerimus. "If our portents of the future holds true, we are about to witness the end of the Star Mages Guild on the Southern Continent. The only question will be 'Is it a self-fulfilling prophecy or are the events pre-ordained as to occur with or without our interference?"

"But the two different strata's of rock is set together like that is very strange to me ......must mean something ..... just opens more questions as to what is afoot .......hopefully we can answer a few of dem "

"The power to bind the land such as that is beyond anything i know of .....but if it is unleashed it will be imaginations of all of us " growls Kazak

"So whats next Peerimus ??..... you seem most knowledge about dis stuff "

Durgan
Thursday June 5th, 2008 11:04:02 PM

"Well, one thing I know is that the devil was up to no good, and now it ain't. That's good enough fer me."

Durgan swats Fluffykins away as he tugs on the beard. "I know sumthin else too. I know I don't like the sound of an elf/dwarf war. Me kin can hold a grudge a long time, and so do the elves. Our peoples do not agree much, but we at least agree that orcs, giants, goblins and their kin deserve the business end of an axe or arrow. But if they are fighting each other, then they won't be keeping those beasties in check. And that won't be good fer anybody. If we can do sumthin ta stop the war, then we should. So let's go."

Savin
Thursday June 5th, 2008 11:47:56 PM

Savin reenters the cave and says, "I think it is time to leave and it sounds like we are being summoned to the Hook City." Savin looks over to Fluffykins and clarifies, "That is where Randall is right? The Hook City?
Either way, I think we have done all we can do here. We have banished the devil and stopped whatever evil it was doing, though it occurs to me that the devil is lawful and might have been fighting against chaos in this case. He did seem a little plaintive before we sent him back to where ever he came from."

Savin walks up to Firn'gaer and puts his arm around the mage's shoulder. You do have more teleports memorized right? We can get out of here.....right?"

Friday June 6th, 2008 12:10:22 AM

"Fluffykins, I know this may be asking a lot, but any chance you recall some of the words the devil used? He probably was speaking infernal or something, but maybe we can translate on a phrase or two." Jurgen speaks to the familiar. Which makes him think of Shay. Before he even looks around, he notices the hawk isn't around him. Back at Heranmar, he supposed. Hopefully the Children's companions would look after each other during their absence.

"I, too, would be interested in going. If only to see meet the Grand Council of Star Mages and discover their intentions. I would rather have been asked by the Council themselves, but that may be foolish pride. We can pose to the Tower our problem of this cave. If that's our next step, we have the problem of getting there. I doubt the Chaos powers will take us through another of Firn'gaer's teleports. And I would like to, if possible, dismantle the devil's magics here. Best not to leave such things laying around..."

(OOC: I know the Bloodpack has their own worries, but is this the sort of thing the CoC would get word to them about? After all, the Great Migration is as dangerous to them as it is to us. Providing, now that I think about it, that both groups know of each other. We really need an organization on this Continent. The Southern League of Adventurers? :P)

Peerimus and Yorrick

Peerimus looks up and nods, "We will certainly be attending the Mage Guild discussions. As to getting there, once Outside I can bring the rest of us through. Firngaer is right on the cave, we could form theories for days and get nowhere." Peerimus nods several times as Savin mentions the possibility of the devil's precense and workings here to be about the other eternal war, that of order versus chaos. "Very possible Savin. But we can speak more on all of that later. This place is unfinished and I have no spells however..."

Peerimus pauses and then looks to the Dwarves. "I do believe the Stone Sword of Tor could make very short work of these statues and put some rather pernament disruptive lines through the Pentagram."

"The magic here was not complete, there would be no danger" then addressing Firngaer, "Correct?"

Either way, Peerimus plans to lead the group and exit the caves to teh open sky where he can find a tree suitable for Transporting them to Hook City

Chamber of Two Stones, Tunnel of One[DM SteveK]
Friday June 6th, 2008 11:50:54 AM

OOC: Due to my losing my memory stick a month back, I can't remember the last set of xpoints for the Children of Chaos. Did you guys get some right after the giant battle at the farm? Or was it before then?

Fluffykins seems to enjoy being the center of attention and flits from person to person, grooming through thier hair, chomping down on a bug from Peerimus' long locks, and generally having a good time. The pseudo dragon eventually curls around Kat'Miara's shoulders with her head laying on top of the halfling's like an absurd hat. Fluffy doesn't know any of the Infernal words or anything else other than Randall was good when she left Hook City. "Yes, Hook City is where they were meeting." And then a plaintive note enters her minddvoice as she rubs her head on Kat's. "Scratch?"

Speculation continues about the pentagram, and Firn'gaer can easily confirm Peerimus' suspicions: the master spell was set on the pentagram, but succeeding spells to make it bigger haven't been done yet. Oh, and the Stone Sword would certainly ruin the spell, pentagram, and statues without any adverse effects.

Other speculation is on the nature of the devil's work. What was the evil plan? To create a rift for other evil outsiders? To stop a portion of the approaching migration in order to have war and destruction? Or was it not an evil plan at all, but a Lawful plan? Another mystery.

With the news from Fluffykins, it looks like common consensus is for the group to go to Hook City and see the Star Mages Guild. Well, after they get out of the cave and reacquire thier companions and familiars. But the first seems to be easily done when Firn'gaer walks further into the tunnel. To the gnome's arcane sight, the ending wall lights up with a magic aura; an illusion!

Turns out the whole wall is an illusion which is where the wind sounds are coming from. When the CoC pass through the spell, they find themselves on a mountainside, quite close to the top of a cut-off peak. It is chilly but not cold, and there are even scrubby trees about the top and sides of the mountain. A quick scan around reveals more mountains all around, stretching north and south. To the east looks like it turns into a heavily forested land, and to the west a much wetter land, almost like a temperate jungle.

Firn'gaer responds to the destruction of the circle. "I'm not sure that was the wisest course of action. It is of great magical power and we don't know what it's full potential or function is."

He pauses. "Have you considered that the devil was not here to create the binding of the land, but instead destroy it as we just did. Consider for a moment, suppose that the Southern Continent is always in a state which seeks to break apart and migrate. These binding circles would be needed to give cohesion to the land so that it might develop. Just as we restored the balance when we defeated and raised the Destroyer, the binding circles might have done for the lands nearby. Do you think this might have been one of those "gates" referred to in the prophecy?" If this did bind the land, which I think might have been around longer than the devil was loose upon the Wold, then for the Migration to complete itself these binding circles would need to be "none."

"Children of Chaos, hear our plea
The signs are there for those who see
Tower of Light with anger will leave
Noble Race hammer and bow will cleave
Gates be many, gates be none
Before the Great Migration is done
Yet beware the side that seeks not change

"Will we need to camp here tonight, or do you have the necessary spells to get us to Hook City today?" If the Children are stuck there for a night, Jurgen will start scouting a suitable location for sleeping, not wanting to stay in the devil's cave.

On the Mountaintop[DM SteveK]
Monday June 9th, 2008 3:50:37 PM

Kazak easily destroys the statues and pentagram, the Stone Sword going through the basalt and granite like a hot knife through butter. No adverse effects are immediately seen, though Firn'gaer is concerned that the CoC may have done the job the Horned Devil was trying to do in the first place...

But soon, the eight heroes and one pseudodragon are out in the morning sunlight looking over the cloud-filled skies of the Gateway Downs.

The Children of Chaos have formed thier plans; they will go to Hook City and the Star Mages Guild.

Yet they are on a mountaintop straddleing Gateway Downs and Dre Moria, thier companions and familiars are all in Heranmar, and Firn'gaer doesn't have enough teleport spells to get everyone back in one day.

She quints against the bright sun from the mountaintop, looking around.

"Fluffykins, have you ever seen so much sky in one place?" She asks. Suddenly, she remembers something.

"Sis! Kit! Where are you? I've got someone you need to meet!"

Durgan

"I think I'm gonna need an ale." Durgan starts gathering firewood for the night, unless someone has a way back to town.

Notes: Should be back to regular posting reports now. Trace's player missed due to vacation. Kit's player missed due to a sick relative. (hope your grandmother is feeling better!) Dweezil returns! For those unfamiliar with Dweezil, I have used the imp as a narrative device for quick summary of play during the week and also as a creative writing outlet.

an excerpt from the journal of Dweezil the imp:

Dweezil has had a very tough time lately for an imp. He has been bored. Normally this would be cause for the imp to get into great mischief but his Master forbid him from going outside. Bored of torturing mice and cats he has caught, Dweezil lay sleepily on a cushioned chair. He remembered when he used to follow the Children of Chaos around. Now THAT was entertainment! But a door slamming open broke his reverie. His master bade Dweezil to come into the primary workshop. Dweezil was very rarely allowed in there and so his excitement built up immediately. "I have nearly finished it Dweezil." Looking up at his Master, The question was answered before the imp could even ask it. "A powerful magic item the likes of which this Wold has never seen." Dweezil rubbed his claws together in anticipation...

Peerimus and Yorrick  d20+22=23 ;
Tuesday June 10th, 2008 10:33:19 AM

Peerimus arches a brow and purses his lips to Firngaer's thoughts on the circle and the devil's precense. "Possible of course, but since the statues are incomplete it seems more that this was a work in progress, not a long ancient composition to the beginning of the Migration. He had nearly 1 week remember, though it does fit the prophesy. We can speak more on all of this back in Hernamar." Peerimus moves about the mountainside a bit but can not focus [Cause the new die roller really really blows chunks with 90% of the time rolling between 1-6]

"Firngaer can 4 as can I. Let's return to Hernamar. On the morning we go to Hook City." Peerimus plants a tree token to use as his entrance back to his glade.

[Cast Teleport Via Plants taking Jurgen, Kit Kat and Fluffykins]
Firngaer can get the rest :)

Once back into his glade, he sends the halfling and Jurgen to the Inn, "I'll be there shortly, order a good hot cider for me." With that Peerimus goes to see Shadow, Yorrick and WanderWood to get an update on the goings on about the small glade.

The Badgers have not moved thier nest yet, but the Druid really does want to pay a visit. Time, so pressing too often. He also needed to forward his other plans. Plans which the Migration would play havoc on if he did not get some of it done soon. But how? The Star Mages might be of some use after all

Peerimus will escort Shadow to the Inn, Giving Yorrick a bit more sleeping time. He would back in a few hours to spend some time with him. Trace would want to see Shadow

Back at Heranmar[DM SteveK]
Tuesday June 10th, 2008 2:18:48 PM

Using the trees, Peerimus takes half the CoC through a teleport, and Firn'gaer takes the other by his own magics to return to Heranmar. It is still daytime, perhaps not quite noon, and so there is plenty of time for the various heroes of the Children of Chaos to do some tasks prior to thier movement to Hook City on the morrow.

Peerimus checks with Wanderwood, Yorrick, and Shadow. The tree reports it has been less than an hour from the time the group left to thier return and so nothing much has happened.

The dwarf brothers get some refreshment before looking for thier own pursuits.

Kat introduces Kit to Fluffykins, and the pseudodragon is happy enough to have people fawn over her until she reunites with her master, Randall of the Star Mages Guild.

Each person is free for a day's work before meeting and preparing for leaving for Hook City tomorrow.

Jurgen
Wednesday June 11th, 2008 3:12:20 AM

When Jurgen gets back to town he goes to the Inn, as Peerimus requests. The paladin isn't much for chit-chat though. His mind is on the coming meeting with the Star Mages. And of the coming Migration, as he understands it. Heavy thoughts which didn't need to weigh him down. Not today, anyway. With that realization, he asks Kazak to join him and see if he could check up on the guards with him.

Meeting with the guards, Jurgen asks if he could spend some time with them. Since he had been suddenly embued with fighting prowess, he didn't know what he was capable. And what better way than to spar and train with those who were already comfortable with a sword in their hands. After his day (which was filled with much more sweat and hard work than Jurgen had ever recalled in being a sorcerer), he returns to Holly's shop to rest for the evening. And to check up on the elf, to see if she wanted to talk or was willing to share her knowledge of the Elf/Dwarf conflict or of Donk's disappearance (and whether he needed any gold or supplies to help him).

Peerimus and Yorrick
Wednesday June 11th, 2008 12:26:14 PM

Peerimus will make a quick appearance at the Inn and let everyone know that he is going to be visiting some friends for the better part of the day.

"Before we moved on the devil we were also planning talking to the council and watch about things like that duel that just happened. Being informed may help them resist and I think we should move forward on this. Jurgen please look into the possibility of a council meeting for this evening."

Peerimus will be visiting Two Stripes's family. He will convey the invitation again to the grove and also reaffirm the plan to awaken the children. Beyond that it will be general conversation, Peerimus likely doing much of the talking about the Wold, the role of nature within the Wold and his role as a druid of it.

Peerimus will also though his conversations, be taking notes as he has plans on crafting a spell or two in the near term and knowledge of the badgers and the area they are currently in should lend nicely to the prelimenaries of the research.

Jurgen [Illegal Post]
Wednesday June 11th, 2008 12:54:26 PM

While Kazak is off trying to set up a workshop, Jurgen gets a hold of the Heranmar council. He gives them a brief outline of recent events, not sharing too specifically the devil's plans, just that it had some Continent shaking intentions. And that, if they were free tonight, the Children would appreciate a meeting.

And then he goes to meet up with Kazak and the guards.

A Day and An Evening[DM SteveK]
Wednesday June 11th, 2008 6:21:56 PM

Kat'Miara takes the day to relax with Kit and learn more about Fluffykins.

Kazak takes the day with an ale, and then on to some work. His earlier work in talking about reopening the quarry is bearing fruit, as the dwarf is able to talk with a half-dozen men who are interested in bringing another industry to Heranmar. The group goes out and inspects the old quarry together, and Kazak notes there is one young man who seems to have a flair for eying a good piece of stone. An older man suggests a storefront in town for contact business and samples, but a building at the quarry for the real work and business transactions. "My wife's sister's second husband's uncle left them a bit of property in town that could be used as such", he tells Kazak while sucking on a sprig of mint.

Savin visits his school, checking, advising and teaching. All in all, a very productive day.

Jurgen gets a hold of the Heranmar council, gives them a brief outline of recent events, and sets up a meeting for after dinner. He then checks on the guards later in the day with Kazak, sparring and seeing what the dwarves and Trace have done in organizing the group. For dinner, he has it with Holly at her shop. She is happy for the company and talks of eveyday stuff, avoiding the subject of the Elf/Dwarf conflict or Donk's disappearance.

Trace with Shadow in tow heads for the Catacombs.

Peerimus visits Two Stripes and her family. His invitation to the grove is again politely declined and she and her husband is satisfied to wait for thier children's awakening. "We trust you, son of earth", they say, "if you say it will be so, then it will be so." Two-Stripes does tell of several orcs in the woods a couple of weeks ago, but they left in an awful hurry, no real danger. "If ever i fear for den or kin, we would pack up and be at your grove". The badgers are more than helpful with telling all they know of their range to Peerimus.

After various dinners, individual work and general checking up around Heranmar, the Children of Chaos come to the manor home of Selenie. She has a large stone floored patio in the back with a large oak for shade. All about are various chairs and off to one side are after-dinner nibbles, desserts, and non-alcoholic beverages. The gold-and-white haired woman stands beside the new Heranmar Council as she welcomes the Children to her home. The other half-dozen older men and women go through the introductions and light talk necessary for such a gathering before they are ready to listen to what thier Protectors have found / discovered outside thier walls.
