At the announcement of the theft, there is a sudden flood of questions and burst of activity. Axara, Rollo, and Zeph run from the room to find the library. They are all somewhat hampered by the fact that none of them knows where it is. The servant, following anxiously, calls out directions.
The library is not far from the parlor where you had been sitting. It is on the ground floor of the house. You get an impression of many tall bookshelves, interspersed with a few tables and chairs. One one of the tables, a lead-lined box stands open. Nearby, curtains flutter at an open window. It is far too early in the year to want opened windows, especially at night. The room is decidedly chilly.
Zeph detects no traps.
Kiel and Selemar head for the front door, in the hope of working around to the library from the outside and picking up the thief's trail. They have the same handicap as the others, though; they don't know exactly where they're going. It takes them several minutes to find the library--recognizable because they recognize the people standing around inside it. Selemar's wolf has not yet found a trail, but you have only now located the correct place to start looking.
Sebastian hesitates, looking about him to see who will pursue the thief. The answer seems to be "everybody."
Owain, rather than rushing off, asks his hostess to lead the way. This Lady Dulcet does, albeit at a more decorous pace.
Following her, Sebastian and Owain can both see that she has the tail of a cat, protruding from the back of her voluminous robes. It twitches as she moves. It was not visible while she was seated in the parlor, but it is obvious now. Apparantly, the rumors you heard were true, and she has not fully recovered from her transformation.
Owain detects no evil within 60 feet.

Rollo didn't even stop in the library as soon as he saw the open window he was through it without hesitation.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Wednesday May 21st, 2008 9:26:33 AM
Axara sees the majority of the group rush in all directions without a clue of where and what to look for.
"Wow! Talking about incompetence! Madam Dulcet must think she has assembled the biggest group of incompetent adventurers in the history of Cinnamon Valley."
When the Witch enters the library, Axara says. "Madam Dulcet, with our permission I would like to cast a spell which would detect any magic activity or items in the area. If I do that, I will glow because of my magick so it would make sense for everyone to stay out of the room.
"I wonder what kind of magical and powerful artifact she has!"
OOC: If Madam Dulcet agrees, Axara will cast Detect Magic.

As soon as Kiel sees the gnome crowling out through the window he motions him to stop.
You'll ruin any and all tracks, should their be any, left by the culprit(s). So please, let Selemar and I do our investigation(s) out here.
Turning to Selemar. What is your companions name again? Perhaps with his nose and my eyes we can find any clues out here as to where the perpetrators might have gone off to.

Seeing everyone jump up and leave, Sebastian realizes worriedly he's going to be left behind alone, "Uh, ... wait for me." jumping up he follows Lady Dulcet and Owain to the library. Catching sight of the tail, blinks in surprise, but doesn't have time to make comments.
Sebastian is impressed by the size of Lady Dulcet's library. He stands amassed for a few moments, until the activity of the others brings him back to the empty box on the table.
With everyone else looking and searching, Sebastion tries to make himself useful by casting a spell enabling him to see magic auras. He stand in one place and slowly turns around in a circle check for magic auras within the library while mumbling to himself "Now if I was a book where would I hide..."
[Cast detect magic 3min - search the library using the spell.]

ooc: previous post has my terrible rolls
"His name is Lango, and WATCH IT!!!" he yelps as the gnome dives past him.
If we don't find a trail quickly, then we'll need to get some people and search. By then, the thief will probably have gone to ground. Unless someone saw him, and will tell me of it. Hopefully the gnome hasn't scared anyone away with the kitchenware he has on.
Selemar is going to look around for any animals. owls, racoons, anything that might have been nearby that hasn't run yet.
" Well, with a wolf to sniff them out and a Ranger to track, if there is a trail, we will find it. Another reason I like this crew. " Zeph thinks to himself.
Once Zeph arrives in the library, on Rollo's heels and following the servant's directions, he searches (28) the area thoroughly, looking for any clues a thief may have left behind. He stops to search the lead box particularly, and any area around it. His eyes scan the floor, the bookshelves, desks, and finally the window for any possible trace.
C'mon, a scrap of clothing, a footprint, a smudge. Anything. I hope that Gnome didn't jump the gun and ruin the crime scene already. Zeph thinks to himself.

I would also like to add that Zeph examines the ceiling as well as the rest of the room... just in case.
" Hey, we should start questioning the servants and the staff. Also, can anyone cast a detect invisible spell? The thief may still be here. If no one can do that, then get a sack of flour from the kitchen and we can spread it all over in attempts to find any invisible peoples. " Zeph says

Owain half-orc paladin Wednesday May 21st, 2008 9:51:16 PM
The huge paladin takes a deep breath as he enters the library. The chaotic situation, with people trying to climb out windows, shouting to each other, is hardly the order Owain preferred.
He moves into the room, glancing around quickly. As he does, he again reaches out with his mind, searching for any signs of evil still in the room (Detect Evil at will, per spell)
"Lady," the half-orc's deep, booming voice carrying easily over the commotion, "please show me exactly where the Codex was last being kept and, if it is not the same place, where it was originally found!"
DM Kathy Wednesday May 21st, 2008 11:43:56 PM
Much to the astonishment of everyone present, Rollo takes one look at the library and immediately dives out of the window in a clatter of pots and pans. The trackers do not seem to appreciate his willingness to help, and call for him to stop.
It is quite dark outside, being a cloudy night in very early spring. Light spills from the library window, but is quickly swallowed by the darkness. Those with darkvision can, of course, see perfectly well outside. Those with low-light vision can see well enough near the window, but lose detail as they get farther from it. Those with no special vision must stay quite near the window to see anything at all.
Kiel searches, but can find no trail. Selemar begins looking about for any creatures that may have witnessed something. [Selemar, please make a Search or Spot check. Also, if Lango will be helping to track, I need a Survival roll for him.]
Inside the room, Axara asks polietly if she may cast a spell. "Of course, my dear, and if you--" Dulcet begins, only to be interrupted by the sounds of Sebastian casting. Dulcet smiles a little. "It seems your friend is ahead of both of us," she murmurs.
Sebastian detects 10 magic auras in the room.
Owain detects no evil within 60 feet. "The Codex was kept here," Dulcet replies, moving to the opened box. "Inside this box, which was completed earlier today. It was found, as I have said, at the Thrupp home, which is some three miles down the road toward Magpie Crossing."
Zeph begins searching the room for any signs of the thief. He finds nothing inside the room, but when he moves to the window, he does see some marks on the outer wall which may have been made by climbing gear. He also suggests spreading flour about.
"Let's leave the flour in the kitchen, Zeph," Dulcet says. "A moment, if you please." She casts a spell (DC 17 Spellcraft Highlight to display spoiler: {See Invisibility}), and after a moment announces that there is no invisible person lurking in the room.
Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29] Thursday May 22nd, 2008 1:00:25 AM
Rollo lands, but does not see or hear any sign of the thief.
Well, he's quick, or maybe he didn't just leave. I need to talk to that servant guy.
With a shrug the gnome leaves the trackers to do their thing and heads back into the house seeking out the servant who reported the theft.
When he locates the servant he asks, "So, did you see the thief, or just notice the book was gone?"
Rollo looked him over for bruises, or injury.
"I'm guessing it was your job to guard it? Cause Dulcet looks pretty smart, and being smart she would have had someone watching the book of ultimate evil that everybody in town knew about and evil doers were actively seeking. I mean yes we were brought in to watch the book, but someone had to be watching it. To not would be hubris. So, who did this?"
Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] (second post, sorry) d20+5=16 ; Thursday May 22nd, 2008 1:10:02 AM
" Hey everyone, I found marks that look like they could be made by climbing gear. " Zeph says.
" But this is odd, since the library is on the ground floor. Perhaps we should look up, rather than down. " Zeph explains.
(OOC: If I see the marks going up, I will try to follow them. If they are not going to the next floors, then I will do something else)
Event A: If I see the marks going up: Zeph begins to take out his climbing kit and gets suited up.
I've played this game before- chasing a thief. The town guard in Plateau City got stuff stolen from them on a daily basis. It was always my job to track them down.
" I think I will go the hard way, by climbing and following the trail upwards until I find what window the thief entered, if that is OK with you guys. Maybe some of yall should run to the roof and some of yall should run to the next floors up while others question the servants. " Zeph says as he climbs out the window and starts to plan his ascent. " That is, unless you guys have another suggestion? Zeph says politely, also looking at Lady Dulcet.
A Fly spell would be useful indeed... I wonder if I should use a grappling hook. Zeph thinks as he looks up. (OOC: I'm not sure how big the building is)
Event B: If I don't see marks going up: " Then it must have been a small person if they needed climbing gear to just get through the window on the ground floor. " Zeph says perplexed.

With his mind working on studying the magic auras, Sebastian is oblivious to Axara's and Dulcets comments and/or questioning looks.
The curious bard concentrate on trying to interpret and identify the aura's strength, school of magic and what object or area it is associated with. Treating it like a game, he calls them out with glee any which he can successfully identify. "Their's one on the what-you-call-it... Uh... It's a ... wait don't tell me it's a of the school of...."

At the window, Zeph sees piton marks below the window, but nothing on the wall above. He is puzzling over why a thief would need climbing equipment to reach a ground-floor window when Rollo tries to re-enter through the window. From the outside, the bottom sill is about chest-high on a human man, which puts it over Rollo's head. It is only with much straining, heaving, and clanking that the gnome is able to gain entry.
Perhaps the theif was of a similar size.
Once inside, Rollo begins questioning the servant. "I'm not really sure what I saw, or heard," the man replies. "I was going through the house, locking up for the night, when something from the library caught my attention. A sound? I don't think so, but I couldn't say, you know, exactly what it was. Something was amiss, though, and I went to see. As I entered, I thought I saw movement over near the window, but that could have just been the curtains. I saw immediately, though, that the box was open and the book was gone."
"Nobody was watching the book," he adds.
"Everyone in my household has been here for years," Dulcet replies to Axara. "If they did not run off with the valuables when I was a cat and could do nothing to stop them, I doubt they'd agree to help some evil power claim an evil book. You may question them, of course."
"The box had no arcane protection," she says, "but as you can see it has a very fine lock." She pulls a small key from her pocket. "And this is the only key."
Investigating the box, Owain can see that the lock is indeed first-rate. Faint scratches on the hasp suggest that the lock was picked--as does the fact that the lock was opened, not broken, and Dulcet has the only key. The rest of the box is quite plain, but very well-made. It is wood, lined with lead. The hinges open smoothly and the joins are flawless.
Sebastian, meanwhile, is playing "Name That Aura." However, when Dulcet casts her spell, there are 11 auras in the room. And when Rollo climbs back through the window, there are 14. Sebastian realizes that he's trying to hit a moving target.
However, he can see that Axara has two faint Conjuration auras on her. Dulcet has two strong auras that Sebastian can't identify. After she casts her spell, she also has a faint Divination about her. The room as a whole has a moderate Abjuration aura. Zeph and Owain each have a faint Conjuration aura. Two more auras inside a nearby drawer register as faint Abjuration and something Sebastian can't identify.
Chaldorl goes outside and listens, but can discern nothing over the sound of Rollo climbing back through the window. Chaldorl climbs up onto the roof, but still hears nothing out of the ordinary.
Selemar and Lango are stymied for the moment, but perhaps Zeph can be of some assistance.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Friday May 23rd, 2008 9:50:50 AM
Axara tries to analyze the situation as fast as she can and hopes to convince the group that she is more that a pretty face and body who can do magic tricks.
"From what we have gathered so far, it seems that an excellent rogue, likely a halfling, has done the job. This would explain the marks outside and how the complex lock was picked. This is probably an excellent rogue for hire that was hired by the person who wants the book. I wonder if these kinds of skills are common in Cinnamon Valley. If there is a thief guild, may be they did the job. Do we have any contact in that milieu?"
She looks a Madam Dulcet and the other adventurers to see if they concur with her analysis.
Sebastian CharSheet d20+9=16 ; Friday May 23rd, 2008 11:47:44 AM
[spellcraft check: 16 trying to id the spell Dulcet cast before.]
Ignoring the auras on the people, Sebastian decides to concentrate on the room aura, could it be the spell Dulcet just cast? While watching Owain inspect the box, Sebastian ask Dulcet, "Lady Dulcet, the room has a moderate aura of Abjuration about it, would that have been from the spell you used or is their some other magic you know about on the room?" The bard notes the size of the box and estimates the size of the book they are looking for.
Sebastian listens as Axara, puts forth her theory nodding as she speaks, he comments afterwards, "Or maybe that what they want you to think? Would not an excellent rogue know to hide his tracks or to disguise them to through off anyone from his trail? Couldn't a thief of average size have planted the marks outside to make it look like the thief was short? Therefore everyone would be looking for a short thief and the real thief would be safe. QED We should be looking a tall thief!" Sebastian finishes with a smug look on his face for out thinking the imagined tall thief.
Turning to the pretty Axara, Sebastian consoles her with genuine compassion, "Don't feel bad your theory was sound; you just didn't take the sneakiness of the thief in to account. You'll know better next time." Then suddenly seeing something on the shelf behind Axara, Sebastian squeals "Oh a book of poetry!" The bard pulls the book off the shelf and starts flipping through its pages.
Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29] Friday May 23rd, 2008 12:01:20 PM Just a lock. This makes no sense. Dulcet is either simple, or setting us up. The gnome approaches the older woman.
I mean a thief could have just taken the box and picked it at his leisure, granted this thief must have had skills. Potentially a locksmith, I wonder where she got the lock from? The creator of the lock would definitely be able to bypass it with little effort. Perhaps we should question the local locksmiths.
The gnome popped back out of his thoughts for a second.
"Hi" a grin still plastered on his face. 'Sorry to interrupt." Rollo glances over at Axara for a cue that he isn't, and then continues.
"This is a real noodle scratcher. First off how old are you? Human's age so quickly. I would peg you at 300, but that would just make you a suspect with the number of obvious holes in your plan for keeping the book safe. Is there a reason you picked this room to store it?
Rollo looks around the room at all the books. "Did you just want it to be with its friends. Perhaps these good books would put it on the right path? Hmm...Not actually a bad idea, but there was one flaw.. Peer pressure works both ways, maybe these "good" books helped it escape. You trust your servants, but how much do you trust these books? I mean it makes sense the evil book couldn't pick the lock from the inside. It had to have had help."
Rollo heads off to examine the book shelves noting every book that is out of order.

After listening to Rollo, Sebastian, and Axara speak, Zeph is a little taken aback.
" Um, Sebastian. Don't shoot down Axara's theory too fast, it is still rather probable. Although it is still possible that a person is trying to fool us, I guess. But you are right, if a Thief was well-trained enough to get in here and get the book, then he may have been good enough to hide his tracks. Although hiding tracks is always secondary to getting out of the place with the loot. " Zeph says as he looks about, both outside and inside the room.
" I would also not put magic out of the equation. It is possible to teleport in, steal the book, make it look like a thief broke in, and then teleport out.... And no, there are no local Thieves Guilds in Cinnamon Valley (23 knowledge), it would have been an outside job. BUT that leaves the question: how did the info of the book being found spread so quickly? " Zeph says, a bit puzzled.
" Hey, Sebastian, don't be afraid to question Lady Dulcet about any odd auras that you notice around the room, in drawers or whatever. Anything can serve as a clue. "
" Found anything of interest guys? A thief should have left a smell or a footprint. " Zeph says to Kiel and Selemar
I wonder why Lady Dulcet didn't guard the book better. I mean, a window, a small lock, and a metal box in a library, left unattended? That is just way too fishy... Zeph thinks

In a room with no magical protection, with just a lead box and a fine lock to protect it. With no guards put on it. Owain stares at the odd little gnome, narrowing his eyes in confusion.
Shaking his head as if to dismiss the gnome's strange behavior, Owain turns to the the ranger.
"I understand your frustration Kiel," the paladin says diplomatically, "but perhaps right now it would be best if we all concentrate on the situation we find ourselves in and, more importantly, how we should proceed."
Owan turns and addresses the group, scratching his chin thoughtfully.
"It does seem as though this theft was done by traditional means," the paladin says, his deep voice rumbling in his barrel chest, "although some sort of magic could have been used as well."
The huge half-orc looks even more thoughtful.
"Perhaps it would make sense if we split up for a short time ... a few hours at most, and looked into this turn of events in out own way, as we had considered doing back in the other room. I can speak to the clerics of my old temple, for instance, about this vile book. Perhaps those of you with more street knowledge can try to dig something up. Our more magic oriented companions can research whatever they feel appropriate. We could meet back here in a few hours, report our findings and then decide on a course of action. If nothing else, I think it would be wise for someone to check out the Thrupp house where the book was originally found."

DM Kathy Monday May 26th, 2008 11:26:00 AM
"Thieving skills are not common in this area," Dulcet replies to Axara. "There is no organized group of thieves or rogues that I'm aware of. Of course, such a group would hardly advertise its precense. Still, I don't think a thief would make a very good living in Cinnamon Valley--let alone a group of thieves."
"Oh, that," Dulcet says when Sebastian asks about the Abjuration spell. "A little spell of my own invention to keep the dust off."
Then the questions--and accusations--about the protection of the book begin to fly, particularly from Rollo and Kiel. "I think you have misunderstood something," Dulcet says. Is that a hint of impatience creeping into her voice? "The book was not here for long-term storage. As I have said, the box was finished earlier today. I knew I had this meeting with you in the evening, at which point I planned to hand the book over to you. It was in this room for a matter of hours." She shuts the box to show what it looks like from the outside. "To anyone who does not know what this box is, it looks perfectly ordinary." She gestures about the room. "A thief would have to know where to look." Following her gesture, you realize she has a point. A thief looking for a book would have quite a search. For one thing, there are many shelves full of books. There are other boxes resting on other tables that might contain a book. Some of the tables have drawers, which could also contain books. "I believed that, for a matter of a few hours, having the Codex in a well-lit, occupied house, hidden where a thief would have to search for it, was sufficient. Certainly if I had hired militia to guard it I would have been drawing attention to the library, which I did not want."
Owain suggests splitting up to pursue various avenues. "If you feel that's the best course," says Dulcet, "then of course you should pursue it. On the other hand, all indications seem to be that the thief is but moments ahead of you. If you can find his trail, it might be best to try to catch him right away."
Meanwhile, Zeph, hanging out of the window, spots a faint indendation in the ground that could be a bootprint. He points it out to Selemar, and Lango is able to pick up a scent. He begins to follow, yipping impatiently for his friend to join him.

Red books seemed to be the most likely to turn traitor, but the yellow ones tend to be cowardly and would be more susceptible to the threats of the evil book.
Zeph's cry about boot prints and the sound of the wolf's indicating a potential path drew him from his pondering.
"Did you say bootprints?",Rollo inquired.
A book with feet? And the ability to fashion boots for itself? Fascinating.
Rollo rushes over to join the druid and his furry friend.
"Lead the way to this most amazing book. Boots! Can you believe it?"

As the testosterone driven males go after the thief, the sorceress waits and says in a soft voice to the Witch. "Madam Dulcet, I want to apologize for my companions questioning your wisdom or intelligence. A library is obviously the best place to hide a book. Your plan was excellent and did not work because of what I believe is inside information. The thief KNEW that the book will be in the library in the box. Now, in addition to you and Sir Thrupp, who else was aware that the book will be here tonight, in the box in the library?"
She does a small head bow as she stops speaking.
After hearing Madam Dulcet's answer, she will try her best to catch the strong and long legged men that are already following the thief.

The bard looks interested and a little perplexed "You use Abjuration magic to keep dust away? You must have quite a problem with dust, to require such a strong magical barrier or banishment magic." Sebastian shrugs as he puts the book of poems back and runs he finger over the top of the book case to see how well the spell keep the dust away.
Sebastian is about to say more when he is distracted by Zeph points out some tracks to Selemar and his wolf. " Well, Lady Dulcet, if the book was available to be stolen for only a few hours, then the Thief must have either been really lucky, or the Thief knew exactly when to steal the book. This means that the Thief must have known about our meeting (Which disturbs me greatly). They also must have known exactly where to look, since it looks so inconspicuous. It may be a good idea for us to gather information from anyone who you are very close to, someone who could have known this information, such as Axara suggests. But let's do that after we try to chase down the Thief. " Zeph says, staring at the Wolf, waiting for it to move.

Owain nods, seeing the wisdom in attempting to track the thief.
Hurrying across the library, the large half-orc struggles to move his massive frame through the open window. Once he is finally through, the paladin draws his large great sword and follows the group, guarding the rear and scanning with a keep eye for anything out of the ordinary.

Some of you still have questions for Dulcet, but her replies will have to wait. Lango has the scent now, and is eagerly following it, with Selemar by his side. Rollo clanks along behind the ranger, with Zeph and Sebastian behind him. Axara and Kiel linger for a bit, as Kiel has something to say, but they, too, follow. Owain brings up the rear. Chaldorl has dropped out of sight for the time being.
[OOC: That's the best marching order I could discern from your posted actions. If you'd like to change your position, of course you can.]
Lango continues to follow the scent confidently, and now that you are away from the well-lit house, light is becoming an issue for those of you without darkvision.

As she follows the trackers, Kiel lectures Axara. She suddenly turns around and pull her hood down. Giving him the friendliest smile he has even seen, she says "Trust me Sir Warrior, I really believe that you are MAN enough ..." she pauses and winks at him as she accentuate the word "man" " ..... to admit when you are wrong. The only issue is that strong warriors like you usually realize they are wrong when it is too late. I cannot tell you the right way to slaughter a monster. But I know a thing or two on diplomacy and how to treat and speak with powerful elders. I leave the fighting to you; try to leave the diplomacy to me if you can."
She winks again and smiles at him as she put her hood back on, covering her entire face. She tries to follow the wolf but it is getting very dark so she pulls a strange looking torch. She lights it and it provide light but no heat and do not seem to burn.
Axara follows the group, knowing that she is basically useless at the moment.
(OOC: Axara is using her ever burning torch).

Not a single observation that was not already obvious has come out of her mouth yet... A small thief, duh. Zeph thinks to himself.
Zeph stays within either the light of Rollo's hammer in front of him, or of Axara's torch behind him. He searches for any signs of life as he walks, with his LongBow out and strung at the ready.
" I'm not sure if singing is the best option right now Sebastian. Perhaps if we are hunting a criminal, we should do so quietly. I don't mean to be testy, feel free to sing your inspiring song when a battle breaks out though. Owain half-orc paladin Wednesday May 28th, 2008 7:40:55 PM
Owain follows the group, sword drawn, his eyes seeing easily in the darkness. He pauses and winces slightly as Rollo illuminates the area with his magical light. After a moment, when the half-orc's eyes adjust to the light, he continues walking.
Frowning at the ranger and sorceress ahead of him, Owain listens to their low conversation.
"Perhaps this conversation might be better conducted at a later time," the huge warrior growls, "such as when we are not on the trail of a thief and trying to remain alert for danger."
Owain suddenly slows his walk and glances around warily.
"Speaking of remaining alert for trouble," he says slowly, still looking around, "what happened to the drow?"
DM Kathy Wednesday May 28th, 2008 11:13:25 PM
As you set out, Rollo casts a Light spell and Araxa pulls out an Everburning Torch, so you have light to see by. You begin your trek through the chilly night.
When the evening began, of course, you were on your way to a meeting. Some of you may not be dressed for an extended trek through the darkened countrtyside. Some of you, of course, are always prepared for something like this.
It is very early in the spring, so the night is cold. Not so cold, perhaps, as in the dead of winter, but cold enough to be unpleasant for anyone not dressed for it. The thief's trail leads you cross-country, with all the attendant hazards of uneven footing and unexpected tree-branches.
Sebastian tries to help by singing--an effort not entirely appreciated by his companions. [By the way, you found no dust in the library.]
After the first mile or so, Rollo's spell winks out, but Araxa's torch still provides light for those who want it.
Between them, Lango and Kiel easily keep you on the thief's trail. Kiel's expert eye can tell that you are catching up. After another couple of miles, he tells you that you are getting very close indeed.

Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Thursday May 29th, 2008 10:43:49 AM
Axara listens to Kiel but says nothing back to him. "spoiled little girl? Could he be denser and farther away from the truth? I knew that a lot of adventurers are long on muscles but short on brain but I did not expect to meet that many. I guess I should have known that I do not meet the profile of the welcoming wench or the damsel in distress which male adventurers seem to feed on. The way they were talking to Madam Dulcet is quite obvious that they are testosterone driven and cannot fathom women of power who are not relying on their muscles or swords to gain their power. But that is my choice to be with them. I could go back to the farm and pretend I am farmer's wife material or try to find out why I was given these powers. It is obvious that it is not to find a mate in the adventuring community."
She cringes when she hears Sebastian's lyrics but somewhat, the song makes her feel better about herself. "He may be cowardly and clumsy and has no poetic talents but he is cute in his own way."
She shivers a little as she is not dressed for a night hunt and the torch does not provide any heat.
When Owain mentions the missing drow, she suddenly gets tense. She whispers to the half-orc "Sir Paladin, do you think that the drow has something to do with it? Could he be a spy? Or a potential decoy? I cannot tell a good drow from an evil drow? With their darkvision, they have a clear advantage right now, if somehow drows are behind this."
When Kiel indicates they are closing in, she smiles under her hood "Could it be that simple? Or are the muscles boys walking into a trap?"

Sebastian continues to follow behind Selemar and Rollo. Peering this way and that with his light crossbow in one hand and buckler in the other.
Zeph suggest Sebastian's singing might not be best saved for actual battle. The bard looks confused for a moment then blurts out with a chuckle, as he replies to Zeph "Was I sing that out loud? You know, sometimes when I get nervous I sing to myself. I guess I was just so tense, I didn't realize I was actual singing it. Sorry, I'm not use to running around in the dark after some thief with a magic tome, that could very well summon daemons from the N plane. I suppose you've done this lots of times? ...." As Sebastian talks he absentmindedly waves his crossbow around occasionally it ends up pointing at Zeph.
After Rollo's spell winks out, Sebastian pulls his cloak a bit tighter about himself, "Maybe we should return to town and wait for morning? It's a bit chilly and dark. You know it dangerous out here and the tracks could be leading us to a trap in the dark. ...." Sebastian continues to chat nervously as he peers into the dark. He has no intention of leaving the safety of the group.
Without thinking about it, Sebastian hikes closer to Araxa and her magical torch light, "You know that torch of your is very useful. If I had thought we would be trudging through the forest at night, I might have had the good sense to get one for myself. ...."
Distracted by his talking and nervous about the dark, Sebastian fails to notice anything out of the ordinary. (spot 14)

We'll let the others go up the middle as a distraction and box him in.
After conferring with the Druid, Kiel turns and goes back to the others, motioning them to gather and explains the situation. Our quarry is ahead by a couple hundred yards (points to where he saw the light, explaining that fact). Selemar and I are going to swing to the left and right while the rest of you continue straight ahead. If the plan works out we'll have him boxed in. The huge half-orc's eyes narrow darkly.
"However, the fact that this drow has disappeared does not speak well for him."
Owain approaches the group huddled up ahead.
"Although I do believe in honor in combat, woodsman," the paladin says quietly to Kiel, "I also understand the need for stealth from time to time. Besides, we do not even know if whoever, or whatever, is up ahead is the thief or even an enemy at all. It could be nothing more than someone out for an evening stroll. I agree with your plan."

Being that Zeph is probably fairly close to the Halfling (since I was trying to get closer to the Halfling when Kiel shot the first arrow) , and probably fairly well hidden, he decides he should stay hidden just in case there is an ambush of some sorts. He also examines the area around the Halfling and the group of adventurers to check for any anomalies. His Longbow is drawn and ready.
Zeph is positioned just so he could hear the conversation Axara is holding, just outside the Faerie Fire spell, under some brush or something.
Just answer the question, there is no need for you to get hurt. Zeph thinks to himself.

Owain half-orc paladin Tuesday June 3rd, 2008 8:51:34 PM
Owain approaches the small woman, sword still drawn, though lowered slightly.
As he approaches, he glances sidelong at the mysterious sorceress. Although her threats of dismembering the halfling are troubling, the paladin decides to let them go.
The huge half-orc then glances in the other direction at the odd gnome.
What in the name of all the Powers of Good is he talking about??? Owain wonders. Does he seriously think this thief is a ... book???
Shaking his head slightly, Owain turns his gaze back to the the halfling and tries to determine if the book could possibly be hidden on her somehow. As he studies her, he searches her soul for any signs of evil intent (Detect Evil, 60')
"You speak the name of Yondalla," he booms, looking down at her. "The Gods do not take kindly to their names being invoked by thieves. We tracked you from that house back there ... the same house that just had something of value stolen. It is very plain to us that you are the one that stole it, or you at the very least were involved."
The muscular half-orc leans down so his face is closer to the halfling's. He stares at her intently, his eyes deep and dark.
"Your response, as well as your actions, during the next few moments," he says, his voice a deep rumble now, "will have a great impact on how you are treated as a result of this crime. Now ... tell us everything."

When the halfling stops, Kiel also orders her to kneel.
"What for?" she retorts. "Aren't I short enough for you already?" But she drops down to one knee.
Meanwhile, Sebastian searches under the bush, with the aid of his Dancing Lights. Zeph searches a wider area, keeping an eye out for trouble.
[OOC answers to a couple of questions: you cannot take 20 to Spot. You can take 20 to Search; it takes about 2 minutes per 5-foot square.]
Selemar concentrates on watching for trouble. He is alert to every nuance of the countryside, but sees nothing but nocturnal creatures.
Rollo's rambling questions seem only to confuse the woman. "Friends back at the---what?" She jerks her head at the gnome, addressing the rest of the group in general. "Has he been drinking?"
Axara and Owain, however, speak more to the point, and apparantly impress the thief. "Hey," she says. "Look now. No need to go chopping body parts. You got me. I'm not going to deny it. That kind of money, it was worth a shot, you know?"
She jerks her head again, this time indicating the backpack lying next to her on the ground. "Book's in there. I could reach in and get it, only sometimes it makes people a mite itchy when somebody like me goes reaching into a bag for something."
"Now, as to the rest," she continues, "I can tell you who told me about the book, and where I was to deliver it, and how much I expected to receive. And in return," she looks apprehensively at Axara. "No chopping! All my body parts stay attached. Agreed?"

Kiel, thanks for the input. However, Owain was responding the the words Rollo actually spoke in the last paragraph, not the thoughts expressed earlier in the post. I actually do understand that italics tend to, among other things, represent thoughts. Quotes indicate speech.

The sorceress walks to the backpack and grabs it "Sir Owain, please try to control yourself and not chop her finger immediately. May be the woman will stop speaking in riddle and tells us what we want to know. "
Holding the backpack, Axara asks "Any of you familiar with traps? I do not want to open it and risk triggering something. By the way, do not touch the book for any reason! "
She goes back to the Halfling woman and put the ever burning torch close to her eyes, forcing the thief to look down or close her eyes.
"You tell us, who told you about the book and the case, who hired you to steal it, how much you were supposed to get for stealing it and where and to whom you were supposed to deliver it. Speak once and the truth or the half-orc here will use your fingers as toothpicks. "

Axara comments about traps and such on the backpack.
Traps are sneaky business, requiring sneaky people to undo their sneakery. Problem with sneaky people though is that they are usually being sneaky hence hard to see. Perhaps if there is a sneaky individual sneaking nearby he could use his sneaky skills to uproot and traps sneakally placed on this sneaky person's backpack. Do we know anyone like that? Are there any sneaky people about?"

"Who's speaking in riddles?" the halfling replies to Axara, sounding a little hurt. "You're gnome friend's the one not making sense. I, on the other hand, am proposing a perfectly straightforward bargain. And, since I haven't heard anybody agree to it, I don't have much incentive to tell you anything."
Neither Sebastian nor Zeph find anything under the bush. Selemar sees nobody coming. From where Zeph is hiding, he doesn't see any traps on the backpack. Of course, at that distance, he's not likely to.
Owain does not detect the presence of evil.
Kiel stands ready with his bow, but the halfling doesn't move.
"Do we have a bargain?" the woman repeats. "See, if I tell you what I know without a bargain, how do I know you won't chop stuff off anyway? Then I'll have sold out my contact, and I won't have a hand. Or finger. Or whatever. You see my point? If I'm going to lose them anyway, I'd rather not blab everything beforehand."

'And if they try they will have me to reckon with."Rollo looks to his new companions waggling his finger to emphasize his statement.

Axara's tone of voice is still very nonchalant and matter of fact "The way I see it, you speak and keep your fingers or you lose your fingers and speak. Either way you speak. But I find it funny that a thief is asking for a word of honor. Regardless, you have already the gnome word. Isn't if enough?" A faint smile appears on her face.
She walks towards the woman and raises her tone of voice "I told you earlier that I will try to convince these blood thirsty mercenary hired to protect the book to spare you. Unlike you, my word is good and I do not like to repeat it. So here is the deal: you spill out everything you know and you will only face the town justice as a thief. You lie to us and you will face town justice as a crippled thief. You have my word for it."
She turns to Owain "Sir Owain, I think the thief is ready to talk. If she tells the truth, we will deliver her to the town as is. If she lies, she is yours."
She looks at the adventurers visible to the thief "Can someone good with knots tie her? I have some rope if needed.
During all of this, she holds the backpack tight.

Axara continues to make threats in an attempt to keep the thief honest, and calls for rope. The halfling eyes her warily.
Zeph remains hidden, and still finds nothing untoward. Sebastian also comes up empty.
Selemar and Kiel remain on guard, but the night is quiet.
"All right, here it is," the thief says at last. "See, I wasn't exactly hired for this gig. Nobody said, 'Maisie, I want you to go and do this job.' It was more of a 'whoever brings me this book gets a reward' kind of deal.
"The offer came from a fellow I know in Angel Springs. And when I say I know him, I meen I've seen him around and done a few odd jobs for him. Goes by Rounder. I don't know his real name.
"I didn't have a set delivery place for the book either. I know where Rounder hangs out in the Springs, and I knew I could find him once I had the book. Oh, and it was worth a thousand. Gold. So you can see why I was eager to snag the thing."
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Friday June 6th, 2008 9:01:49 AM
Axara nods at the halfling's words. "That is a good start Maisie but you left me wanting for more. First, we need to know who told where the book was. Second, we want any information about that Rounder you have: what he looks like, where he hangs out, what are his skills, where he got his gold, etc. Tell us all, Maisie."

"M'lady." Rollo approaches Axara. I believe I can ascertain whether the book is in the backpack or not. May I?

Zeph, being fed up with indecision decides to come out of hiding to inspect the backpack and tie some ropes. As he walks towards the halfling, he is searching for traps of any sort.
If the Halfling is surprised by his presence, Zeph says, " Don't worry, I'm just one of those bloodthirsty mercenaries. "
Then he examines the backpack that Axara is holding, trying not to look at the book directly, for he fears the possibility of being drawn into its power.
" Hand me some rope and I guess I will give it a try. " Zeph says to Axara, gesturing at the Halfling.
Once he gets done tying (if the Halfling lets him) he says, " Well, I do not think this will hold a professional thief in any instance. "
DM Kathy Sunday June 8th, 2008 8:44:52 PM
"Nobody told me where to find the book," Maisie replies to Axara. "That is, Rounder said it was in this place called Jarlwolf, but I came here and found out the rest." She describes Rounder for you, and lists a couple of places in Angel Springs where he can be found.
Sebastian chimes in with some information on Angel Springs. It is indeed in the part of the Wold called Crescent Valley, and its population consists mainly of halflings. It is the largest settlement in Crescent Valley, in much the same way that Jarlwolf is the largest settlement in Cinnamon Valley. And, like Jarlwolf, Angel Springs isn't exactly a "big" place to rival Plateau City or the Floating City or even Rowena.
Rollo has a Cunning Plan for extracting the book, but Zeph steps in to do a proper Rogue-y trap search. He finds no traps on the bag. Inside, you find the book just as Maisie had said you would. You also find her personal gear.
Zeph tries to tie Maisie up. She doesn't resist, but does begin a new phase of negotiations. "So," she says, "now that I've told you what I promised, how's about re-thinking that whole 'turn me over to the authorities' thing? I mean, you have the book back. No harm done. I didn't break anything. I didn't even take anything else, and let me tell you, that lady had some quality stuff. So, really, how much time can they give me? A few months? Is it even worth the effort? How about you just let me go, in the spirit of mutual cooperation and understanding?"
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Monday June 9th, 2008 3:16:44 PM
After Zeph confirms that the book is in the backpack, Axara asks Owain to see if the book is evil. She closes the halfling backpack and keeps it. "No one should touch this book. We will bring it back to Madam Dulcet per our agreement with her.
When Maisie tries to cut a deal, the sorceress smiles " What do we have to gain by letting you go? Nothing. You told us what you know although I am not sure how you knew where exactly the book was so you must be hiding something. Anyway, if we give you a lead, it will only to let our archers do some target practice. And you have seen how accurate they are. You would not be a nice pin cushion. I say we bring you back alive like we promised you. Or ...", she pauses and winks again at Owain, " ..we let the half orc barbarian decides if he brings you back to justice or eat you alive. Your call, Master Owain." She bows to the paladin to contains her smile and walks toward Rollo.
"Master Rollo, that was a great idea. You definitively are cunning and smart, like any envoy of the Fae-King should be. I feel better you are in our group."
Sebastian [AC:16, hp:17]CharSheet d20+3=15 ; Monday June 9th, 2008 3:21:31 PM
Sebastian continues his search (search 15), while wondering what they plan to do with the thief and worrying who is going to come after them now that they have the book.
Sebastian mutters musingly to himself, but loud enough for anyone to hear him "Too bad we found the thief and the book, now everyone who wants it will be coming after us. If only we hadn't caught her, then we could have spent a few weeks looking for the book, without having to watch our backs for the next group who is looking to take it from us. Instead they would be wasting their time chasing this Halfling. As it is now, she will be sitting safety in jail back at Jarlwolf while we are fighting off all takers for the book."
Sebastian continues after pausing for a moment, "Too bad we can't let her go with the book and pretend we never caught her."
Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29] Monday June 9th, 2008 10:56:26 PM
Rollo looked to Sebastian.
"Not a bad plan. We were hired to guard the book, not to retrieve it. Why don't we just hold onto it for safe keeping. It is obviously safer that if we give it back to Madame Dulcet. Of course we will need to hire miss Maisie on as an accomplice so that she will not report her failure. We should set out for parts unknown, for if they are unknown to us they will be unknown to our pursuers. Yes this plan of yours is brilliant."
Perhaps a lie to sweeten the pot. What better act of good then to turn an evil thing like a lie into a weapon of the righteous.
Those of you with belongings back in town should retrieve them with word that we have lost the trail, and need to regroup for our pursuit. Tell them of Rounder, and the Crescent Valley. This will be so much fun.
DM Kathy Monday June 9th, 2008 11:50:03 PM
Maisie looks from Sebastian to Rollo as if trying to decide if they're serious. "Um...well, yes. Sure. Okay. Let me go, give me back the book, and I won't say a word to anybody. It'll be our little secret."
Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29] Tuesday June 10th, 2008 1:07:33 AM "You misunderstand. You and the book will be staying with us. It'll be fun."
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Tuesday June 10th, 2008 9:37:41 AM
Axara has an incredulous look on her face when she hears Sebastian and Rollo plans. she clears her throat and says "Gentlemen, I think that in your good intentions, you are mistaken. May be it is the evil power of the book. We are here to guard the book and eliminate anyone trying to steal it. We got the book back, will put it in a safe place after we deliver" she stops and look at Maisie pointing to the impressive looking half-orc "or kill the thief that took it. Time to go back to town and deliver that scum to the authorities."

Sebastian [AC:16, hp:17]CharSheet Tuesday June 10th, 2008 10:48:27 AM "Hun? What idea?..... Uh, I mean Yes. It is a Brilliant idea. (I think?) what did I say?" Sebastian has to think back over what he had just said. Having collected his thoughts, "Uh, we keep the book and pretend we didn't catch miss halfing thief here. She runs and hides for the next few weeks, because if anyone who is looking for the book catchers her, even if she tells the truth they would most likely torture her or worse just to make sure she's not lying to them. We would of course tell Lady Dulcet, but keep looking. After all who is going to try and steal something from us that they don't think we have?" Sebastian says proudly after finishing his twisted bit of logic.
Smiling he looks around to see if the half-orc or the shrew lass is buying into this diversion as well as the others "It could work, but I guess you would rather have all the armed thugs hunting for us that's fine. I'm sure we will all die a heroic death guarding the book with our last drop of blood. If heroic deaths are your cup of tea, I like them in stories, but I'm not sure I want to try one myself."
Sebastian waits to see what the others think.

" Well, I do agree with Sebastian on that last note (Get it, note? Bard. hehe) , I don't feel like dying a heroic death quite yet. There are things on my to-do list I want to take care of first. " Zeph says to the group of decision makers standing around him.
This indecision will be the death of me before anything else. Zeph thinks.
"You know. Just like Rollo said, if we turn her in, then people will find out that we have the book. But if we let her go, they will find her and torture her for information about us. If we take her along, then she will probably escape. So, option number 4 would be to kill her and hide the corpse. I know you guys may not like the idea, but maybe it is the option that would keep the book most secure..... although on second thought, any evil-dooers who want the book could just ask Lady Dulcet, thus blowing our cover anyways." Zeph explains.
" Regardless, this poor woman seems doomed. Maybe the jail cell is the best option for her sake. Either way, lets just do something. I can't stand all this waiting around."

Rollo looked to Axara.
How would we have come under the books influence? You've been holding it the whole....time?"
Is she being overtaken by evil. She has mentioned killing and dismembering the thief several times. What to do? What to do? AH YES!
Rollo pulls out a gold coin and walks over and hands it to Axara.
"Does that help? Are you seeing clearer now?"
Rollo turns to Sebastian. "We will only be hunted by thugs and delivered to a heroic death would be if the thugs think we have the book, which if this plan goes as planned they shouldn't. There is a spy in Madame Dulcet's camp and that spy will be feeding information to potential thieves and will only have the information we give them. Hence the book is on its way to Rounder. We will be long gone before anyone realizes that it isn't."

Sebastian [AC:16, hp:17]CharSheet (second Post) Tuesday June 10th, 2008 4:42:41 PM
Misunderstanding, Sebastian response in a shocked voice to Zeph and Rollo, "You think Lady Dulcet is a spy? Well in that case we shouldn't tell her that we found the book! Besides she already lost it once. Also, I don't think we should kill the Halfling. Just let her go to take her own chances. If we take her with us she may escape and try to steal the book again, but if we send her on her way then she would have to find us first while taking the risk of being found by any other book hunters."
Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] Human Rogue (second post) Tuesday June 10th, 2008 6:59:11 PM
Zeph raises an eyebrow to Sebastian.
"Errr. No, good bard. We do not feel that Lady Dulcet is in anyway a spy. I think we just feel that whatever evil-dooer is looking for this book could easily gain information from either her or her associates. You must realize what servants and cooks are willing to tell when tortured. " Zeph explains to the slightly confused blond.
"Also, the problem with simply letting her go is that she could either attempt to steal it from us again, now that she knows who we are. Or she could inform people that we have the book. I do not want a target painted on my back. We do not know exactly how powerful this book is, and what the evil-folk are willing to do to get it. That puts everyone involved at risk. The less amount of people who know we are in possession of it, the better." Zeph says.
(OOC: I wonder if my previous search check of 27 would have revealed the contents of the Halfling's bag, just for reference.)
Selemar Tuesday June 10th, 2008 7:32:22 PM
"i think the gnome and bard may have a good idea. I trust Lady Dulcet, but clearly someone is aware that she has the book, or she (indicates the thief) wouldn't have appeared. If we bring it back there, someone will come for it. We have to stop every attempt to take it, but an evil doer only needs to succeed once."
"At the moment, no one knows where the book is apart from us. If we keep telling others where the book is, then someone is certain to tell the wrong person, and attempts will be made to take it. As things stand now, someone intened on finding the book needs to track down the thief, which is preferable to them tracking down us."
"It is possible that we have gained some time. If the thief is telling the truth, then others want the book. if word gets out it is stolen, we may be able to use the next few days to get rid of it. Bury it. Thropw it in the sea. Take it to a volcano and throw it in. Let Rollo give it to the fey. let's not squander this opportunity."
DM Kathy Wednesday June 11th, 2008 12:01:55 AM
You discuss among yourselves the idea of claiming you were unsuccessful in retrieving the book, telling only Dulcet of its recovery. Most of the group seems to support this idea.
What do do with the thief is more problematic. Turn her loose? Take her to the authorities? Kill her outright?
"Hey!" she says indignantly. "I took a book, for the love of Wardd! I had it for maybe five hours. I doubt that's a capital offense. Who are you guys, anyway?"
Kiel stays out of the strategic discussion, but does tie the halfling a little tighter. She does not resist.
Zeph analyzes the halfling's words and demeanor, but she seems to be sincere.
[OOC: multiple role-play posts during discussion is fine. :) ]
[OOC: A Search check of 27 would reveal quite a lot. There were no traps on the bag; if there had been, each trap would have had a Search DC, and you would have found it if you'd beaten the DC. A 27 would find many traps, but isn't a guarantee of success. If you were looking for a specific item the thief had concealed, then your Search check would have been opposed by her Hide check. However, she does not appear to have tried to conceal anything.]
[Clarification: The book was in plain sight in the backpack, sitting on top of her gear. Her gear includes a climber's kit, chalk, a crowbar, several pints of oil, and a change of clothes. Her hooded lantern is on the ground where she dropped it. She also has a belt pouch which you have not yet searched.]
As you discuss the merits of your various plans, it begins to rain. "Wonderful," says the thief. "Say, can somebody put my hood up for me? Be a friend? I'm a little tied up at the moment. Ha!"

Sebastian looks up as the rain starts to fall, "Oh great! Ok, does anyone know of a nearby tavern, barn, cave, or abandon abode where we can take shelter?" (knowledge local 8) The bard draws a blank, he's not even sure where they are or which way is back.
Sebastian obliges the thief by lifting her hood over her head, "Looks like your coming with us for now miss. I know some good stories and I like a captive audience." The bard chuckles at his joke, "You get it 'Captive' because your tied up."
Not wanting to stand around it the rain, the bard will follow anyone who know where their going.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] d20+5=13 ; Wednesday June 11th, 2008 10:50:40 AM
Axara looks suddenly a little confused.
"the group has just been formed and it is already splitting apart. Is history repeating itself?
She looks slowly at all the men in the group and tries to use her most diplomatic voice. "Gentlemen, I think we are mixing a bunch of decisions together and some are driven by fear" (quick look at Sebastian) " while other are driven by .. by ..... a different logic." (quick look at Rollo). "We are facing 3 decisions. First, tell or not to our employer that we have found the book. I believe that we must tell her because we have been asked to GUARD the book, not find a way to destroy it. Second, what to do with the book? We can give it back to Madam Dulcet or keep it. I believed that Madam Dulcet intended for us to guard the book in a location of our choice. We do NOT have to tell her where but we should get the lead box to prevent its evil from affecting us. Finally, what to do with Maisie? I have no love lost for that thief but I gave her my word that we should not kill her. At least not immediately. I do not think it is wise to bring her with us as we will steal the book again at the first occasion. So we give her to the authority and let justice deal with her."
She stops, hoping to have brought some unity to this broken group.

Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29] Wednesday June 11th, 2008 11:33:55 AM Rat...Rat Tat Tat......Tat.... The rain playing on the top of his helmet draws Rollo's attention, but to those not dwelling in the deep end of his mind he merely appears contemplative.
Snapped back Axara's logic statement he decides to chime in. "Okay, the impasse seems that a decision must be made, and we are without leadership. So, let's put it to a raise of hands.
The gnome looks around for agreement. before continuing.
Okay, the problem is I'm using real logic, they need human logic.
The Gnome puffed out his chest and made sure to make his voice deep and pseudo-intellectual being sure to emphasize the big words as he paced back and forth. Several things have been made abundantly clear to us in this very miniscule time frame. The first issue is that thieves desire this Tome. Thing two, someone in Jarwolf, whether Madame Dulcet, her butler, staff, or even some member of the rake assembly.....um Shovel Brigade.....um Pitchfork Bureau. Rollo struggles to remember the proper farm implementation. "Whatever they are called, had information as to the whereabouts of the book and was willing to give said information away, which means as soon as we return with the book we will be just waiting for another book to steal the book, and the next one might not be so charming."
So, at this point the only individuals we can be positive didn't leak the information as to the whereabouts of the book are right here, right now, because until a few minutes ago none of us had the information to give. So, let us guard this secret, for its protection may be enough to prevent further evil, or do you not recall the books power is relative to the knowledge of its presence. If everyone things it is in the crescent valley they will not be pulled by its dark sway. So, it is our duty to be this secret's keeper in order to protect those it would entrance.
I am but a simple country gnome, but even I can see the choice is clear. But the decision is that of the group I vote we keep the book secret, and safe.
Rollo unhooked his thumbs from his suspenders, and realized there was another issue to be dealt with.
As for Maisie, she is as likely to steal the book again whatever we decide to do with her, apart from killing her and I swore an oath to her that that wouldn't happen as long as she told the truth, so I suggest we hire her for her services, she doesn't seem evil merely industrious. If her allegiance can be bought, why not buy it.
Kiel Longarm AC17 HP26 Wednesday June 11th, 2008 2:59:11 PM I like this gnome. He has a good head on his small shoulders. Besides, size never has mattered.
I stood here, squatted here, and knelt here listening to everything being said, and of everyone's opinion, Rollo's is the best one to stand out. I think his grasp on the situation is the best course of action for us in regards to this book. -dramatic pause- I also think, and gauging almost everyone's reaction, that we need a leader of this troupe and it is my opinion that the best person for this task would be our asteemed colleague, Rollo.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Wednesday June 11th, 2008 4:32:26 PM
Axara groams in exasperation "Did you lose your mind or is the book affecting you as you are not use to arcane objects? You want to keep the book and not tell Madam Dulcet? Why? If people think someone has the book, they will find out who has it quite fast, even if we do not tell our employer. And where do you plan to hide this book? Try to burn it like the short one proposed? And hire Maisie? I say we kill the halfling and move on. This is utterly non-sense. I am cold, the rain is ruining my dress and I am hungry. I am going back to Madam Dulcet."
Using her everlasting torch, Axara starts walking back toward the village.
"these guys are crazier than the gnome. I should have them open the book and see what happens to them. Pure insanity! Why do I always end up with losers like these"
Selemar Wednesday June 11th, 2008 4:33:35 PM
Interpret the last post as a stunned look directed at Kiel based on his last suggestion
"I'm still inclined to believe that what others do not know, they cannot tell. I think we keep this as quiet as possible. If others wish to tell Madame Dulcet, I have no particular objection, but would not suggest we do so."
"I want the thief with us at ll times, or made silent in a way we can rely upon. " Selemar pulls her hood over her head. "I don't think we need to hurt her, but she attempted to steal an evil book and deliver it to another. She took a risk, and the price she should pay is a loss of her time. let her come with us as we try to find a way to hide this book where none will ever retrieve it."
Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29][second post) Wednesday June 11th, 2008 4:58:09 PM "Excuse me miss." Looking towards Axara who is starting to walk away. "We have all not voted, so if you leave with the book I shall assume that you are stealing it. So, please wait till we have all voiced our opinions."
The grin never leaving Rollo's face.
Humans, so rash to act. Never thinking it through to the end. Probably explains why they tend not to live past 80.
Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] Human Rogue d20+9=17 ; Wednesday June 11th, 2008 5:09:19 PM "I agree with Kiel, Rollo seems to have the best balance of morals and understanding in this group. And I don't see why Axara thinks that our group is splitting up. Where did you get that from?" Zeph says to the small group, and looking at Axara in the last sentence.
"Yeah, maybe voting is the best way to go about it. I for one think we should keep the Pitchfork Council out of the loop, and maybe just send Lady Dulcet a letter in some manner, telling her what we need her to know of the situation. Our job is to protect the book at all costs after all." Zeph suggests.
Zeph thinks for a moment...
"Hey guys and gals, I just had a terrible thought. If this guy named Rounder found out about the book, then who else may know about it? I got a BAD feeling that perhaps Jarlwolf could be in some serious trouble right now. They may need our help. Regardless of what we decide to do with the Halfling, lets travel back in that direction. We don't know what kind of evil things could have been hired to take this book by force." Zeph suggests
"Well, Rollo, I like the idea of hiring the Halfling to keep her mouth shut about us, but how do we know that she will not lie to us and take off in the night? Coin is persuasive, but not that persuasive. Perhaps the first mistake was giving her your word that she would not be killed." Zeph says in a manner that he tries not to offend Rollo.
Zeph walks up to Maisie, " I'm gonna search your belt and for any other things on you right now."

DM Kathy Wednesday June 11th, 2008 11:49:16 PM
As you discuss what is to be done with the book, the council and the thief, words grow heated and passionate.
All of you seem to feel that your mission is best served if the general public believes the book is still missing.
Some of you would like to keep Madam Dulcet in the loop, others would exclude her.
Some of you are advocating killing the thief; others argue that she should be brought with you.
And it seems to have been moved and seconded that Rollo act as group leader.
Zeph searches the halfling's belt pouch, over her indignant protests. He finds a few candle stubs, some coin, flint and steel, a potion, and a set of very incriminating thieves' tools.
Axara, wet, cold, and annoyed, decides she's had enough and begins marching--or rather, squelching--back toward town. Sebastian, also keen to get out of the rain, follows. Zeph seems inclined to follow, worried about what will happen in Jarlwolf.
Kiel calls for them to stop, as no consensus has been reached.
The prisoner looks up at Kiel and Zeph. "Can I stand up now? The ground is getting wet."
[At this point, the DM would like to remind you of a couple of things, because it's been hours for your characters, and days for you. :) Dulcet told you that people had been talking about the find. The Council has since told them to keep it a secret, but the cat was pretty much out of the bag, which is why you were hired. Also, there is a lead-lined box back at Dulcet's which is supposed to mitigate the effects of the book.]
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Thursday June 12th, 2008 7:05:59 AM
Axara looks goes from incredulous to furious! As Rollo threatens her, she stops in her tracks and turns around "So here is your real face crazy gnome? Ready to attack and ally and save a thief? YOU" and she points to everyone who thinks that Rollo makes sense as a leader, "you are willing to follow someone wearing cooking ware for an armor, who think that Maisie is a book, who was ready to burn to the book and now is ready to kill an ally? Only idiotic fools would follow a crazy delirious leader. You are the biggest group of incompetent mercenaries I have ever associated with and I had my share of losers. You want the cursed book? Here you go." She opens the backpack, picks up the book and throught it in the group general direction. "Go fetch retards" She turns around and keep moving toward the village, her everburning torch in her hand.
Selemar Thursday June 12th, 2008 8:58:24 AM
Selemar looks at the thief "She may have a point. The thief may not deserve to die, but we are getting wet. Surely one can be forgiven for cold blooded murder if it's damp. Eh, what do I know? I'm following a mad man."
"Rollo, what would you suggest we do next with the book. Er, the book that was stolen, not Maisie. Though that's an important question as well. Of course, it's possible that young woman will dry off then decide to sell the book's location to Rounder or anyone else interested in such information."
"I have an idea on how the book may be hidden for a time, but I think I'll keep the details until we decide what we're doing, and until it's clear whether anyone else will be leaving."

Jarlwolf is a big enough community, it can take care of itself. Not like some "army" is going to come sweeping in and raze the town just for the book. But, some of us do have gear that needs to be retrieved from town if we are going to set off doing what we are going to be doing. 'Only a fool would follow Crazy Delirious leader?' Rollo ran the statement through his head realizing the problem. She wants to be the leader, but she realizes that her crazy delirium is holding her back from this position. Very sad, such low self esteem.
Rollo laughs with recognition of the problem.
"Ma'am! I think I see your confusion. First off people need to wear clothes. It's not right to walk around naked, no matter what they told you. Second can you prove Maisie isn't a book? And third I was going to burn the backpack, the book is indestructible, that means it will not burn."
Rollo continues to shout after Axara.
"Perhaps it is merely the amount of incompetent mercenaries that you are having difficultly with? Is it that you find difficulty dealing with large groups? I'm sure if you give it time you will adapt. One day you will be a great leader of retards I'm sure of it! Although that term is insulting and you may not want to use it! If you stay I will take you under my wing and teach you proper etiquette and everything! You can be my protege!"
Rollo turns to Maisie.
"It seems she took your backpack."
As Kiel speaks Rollo looks a little confused by the suggestion of gear for the road, in his mind you need more gear for a town than the road. All those coins and such."
"What sort of supplies do you require for the road?"

Pulling his cloak tighter about himself, Sebastian starts to follow Axara since she has the light and is heading somewhere, but then an argument breaks out and Axara's throws the book at the group.
Looking miserable, the bard stops and pulls out a sack using it like a glove he carefully picks up the book up out of the mud treating it like some poisonous snake. He pulls the bag off letting the book ending up in side the sack. He is torn between the two groups, "Look guys, Tredwell's rule #3 'Never split your strength when faced with attack.' We should stick together! The plan to keep the book secret is useless if even one person goes backs and tales, so since it is raining we should all go back to town, turn Maisie over to the locals and prepare for our heroic death guarding the book. Or we can stand in the dark and rain preparing for our heroic death."
Turning to Zeph Sebastian shugs, "I hope Jarlwolf isn't under attack, but I'm not sure what we could do if it was. Like Kiel said 'It can take care of itself.'"
Looking at the group as the discussion fall into using baseless insults and crazy statements, "No one get's my vote for leader, because no one is capable of leading. Now I'm going to follow Axara back to town, because she has a light and knows the way. (I think?)" Looking very nervous and wondering if he is going mad Sebastian continues, "The rest of you lot, can stay here in the dark and rain or you follow along to guard me, because I have the book." "Perhaps I'm missing something here. Why does everyone keep mentioning not splitting the group before they decide to split off from the group? Secondly, I'm not looking for leadership, just consensus, which requires discussion of option, then we decide together on a course of action. Can everyone stand still with out yelling, pouting, killing, stealing, or insulting the other people present long enough for us to decide on a course of action that we can all agree on?"
Rollo looks around at the others.

Owain half-orc paladin Thursday June 12th, 2008 5:39:08 PM
"ENOUGH!!!"
The huge Half-Orc's deep voice thunders through the cool, rainy night air. He glowers at the various members of the group as they engage in the various arguments and bickering.
"I have listened this in silence for what seems like days!" The Paladin roars angrily. " I have endured threats and implied threats that we would do bodily harm or even kill this thief and listened to all manner or arguments over every aspect of what is a clear cut matter!"
Owain takes a step forward, his great stride covering ground easily.
"This woman," he says, gesturing dismissively at the bound halfling, "is a thief - there is no denying that. Therefore, we will do what the law requires and turn her over to the proper authorities. I follow a strict code of conduct and will not stand by or be a part of such acts. However, because she did tell us what we wanted to know, we can certainly speak favorably on her behalf - perhaps the authorities will be lenient. That is THEIR decision, though, not ours."
Owain turns and looks at the book, his eyes narrowing to a glare.
"As for that," he says, his booming voice lowering slightly, "we were hired to guard it, not hide it or make off with it in secret. We should take it back to the house, return it to the box for safe keeping and then guard it! As for this Rounder character, once we have discussed ALL of this with Dulcet, perhaps we can follow up this lead, most likely taking the book and its' box with us, and track him down. That can be discussed once we have returned to the house."
The massive Paladin stares at the group.
"Now, unless anyone has an objection, someone gather up that theif, put the book back in the backpack for now and let us return to Madame Dulcet."
Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29] Thursday June 12th, 2008 5:47:11 PM "Um....If you have been listening to the conversation. There are many number of objections, and being loud and bossy does not make you right. Show of hands and lets be done with it."

Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] Human Rogue d20+4=5 ; d20+4=14 ; Thursday June 12th, 2008 5:48:25 PM Axara is probably just mad that we didn't chose her to lead. Well, I guess she just proved exactly why we would never chose her. Getting all upset and storming off with group possessions is not a quality of a leader. At least Rollo is willing to compromise, and Kiel is willing to take some action to get things done. Zeph thinks to himself as all the arguing and shouting is going on around him.
Zeph turns to Rollo. "Ok, I guess I am alone on wanting to check up on Jarlwolf, maybe we can settle that after we settle Axara's issues. Please don't judge all Humans by this one's hot-hotheadedness. " Zeph says to Rollo, slightly apologetically.
She wishes to be taken seriously and she does not want to be pre-judged because she is a woman, yet she pre-judges Rollo just because he wears Pots and Pans. Why can't people see honesty when it is stairing them in the face? Rollo's greatest asset is his innocents, we need that in this group. Zeph thinks to himself as he walks towards Kiel, Axara, Sebastian, and Maisie (It sounds like they are all in the same location.
"Look, lets not be rash, maybe it's the rain, maybe it's the book. But some of our tempers are getting in the way of logic. This is the reason Elves, Gnomes, Halflings, and Dwarves all distrust Humans.... Let's just take this discussion to an inn somewhere and talk about it over some mead or something. If we split, we only endanger the book. Isn't that why we are all here in the first place??" Zeph says to Axara, Kiel, Sebastian and Maisie.
(Knowledge History = 5 Knowledge Local = 14 I'm trying to remember any inn's or shelters close by. I did grow up in Jarlwolf after all.)
DM Kathy Friday June 13th, 2008 1:23:28 AM Axara, still upset, seems determined to head back to town. Sebastian would like to follow--after all, she has the light. He urges the group to stay together. Selemar claims to have an idea about what to do with the book, and remains neutral on the subject of returning to town.
The bitter, three-cornered argument among Axara, Kiel, and Rollo continues. Owain, recovering himself a bit, tries to call them to order but they are having none of it.
Kiel jerks the prisoner to her feet and shoves her after Axara. The halfling, whose hands are bound, has a hard time keeping her balance and stumbles to her knees. "Take it easy there, Chuckles," she says, climbing back to her feet.
Zeph casts his mind about, thinking about inns, but Cinnamon Valley is lightly populated and doesn't see many travellers. He's pretty sure there isn't an inn closer than Jarlwolf.
By default, the party--or most of the party--begins heading in that direction. It does seem as if a brief stop in Jarlwolf, at least, is in order. Some people have gear they need to retrieve, and the lead-lined box will almost certainly come in handy. It's likely that everyone would benefit from a night's rest.
Maisie the thief stumbles alongside as best she can, but her short legs don't allow her to keep up with the Big Folk, and her bound hands make it difficult for her to keep her balance. She falls more than once.

I have been with these guys for less than a few hours and I have already polarized the group between the ones that hate me and the ones that tolerate me. I must be destined to live a solitary life like the creep my father sold me to. This is my cursed destiny. Once at the village, I will tell Madam Dulcet that the group is better off without me and resign from my mission. "

As we walk, Zeph looks on everyone's faces to see what their general demeanor is (SPot = 19). He thinks he notices Axara is upset. Zeph walks up to walk next to her.
"Look, there was a disagreement in the group. It's nothing to get too upset about. Next time there is something like this, we just need to vote on it. And if you are on the side voted down, then ya just gotta suck it up. Disagreements on tactics are not a reason to get upset, I know you are smarter than that, I can see it in you." Zeph says to Axara rather apologetically, trying to diffuse any left over frustration. (Diplomacy = 17)
Thinking he is slightly successful, Zeph takes a lighter tone with the woman. "Besides, this job seems to be very important, don't you feel like you are making a difference in the world? We don't know where that book would be right now if we hadn't tracked it down!" Zeph says, optimistically.
Looking at the poor Halfling, Zeph takes pitty on her. "Hey, Owain. Do ya think you could carry the lass in a manner that she wouldn't swipe any of your coin?"

Selemar Friday June 13th, 2008 9:57:08 AM
"I sill think we're better off keeping the book's whereabouts hidden. Turning one thief over to the authorities is less important than keeping this thing safe. Still, we will defer to the group's wisdom in dealing with the book, and the other book that stole it."
Sebastian [AC:16, hp:17]CharSheet Friday June 13th, 2008 11:59:03 AM
Sebastian trudges along in the rain with the book laden sack over his sholder, not really wanting to talk to the others. After a bit the bard begins to whistles a tune and not long after that the starts putting some words together as the group walks back. "Rain drops keep falling on my head, but doesn't matter, we'll soon be dead."
"A gaggle of brats, Arguing in the rain, Why is that, because we lost our brain."
"That's why tomorrow should be sunny, and everyone in armor will be funny."
"If only we can make it back to rest. Then we'll be ready for a heroic death."
Despite the rain, dark and disagreements, Sebastian seems to be cheered by putting together his little silly song.

(ooc: I'll take it from that nudge, we are suppose to head back to town)
Apparently being volume is a gauge of competence in human and orc society, perhaps the two races are closer related than I had thought. I should note that for future dealings.
Rollo notices that he is not the only one a half step behind the decision making process. Rollo walks over to the elf doing the math in his head.
"The decision has been made apparently." Rollo notes the group walking away.
It was finally starting to make sense. Why Pim wrote him the letter. Why the situation was so dire. Why they were so quick to violence. Why they lack simple logic. Why they saw stomping their feet and shouting as a reasonable argument.
" Do the math friend elf. Rollo gestured to the party in the distance. "When we were there age we were barely out of diapers. They are toddlers playing with a loaded crossbow, and we were brought here to babysit. Let's not let them shoot themselves, or us for that matter" [/b]
Rollo followed the group.
"I'm just worried we were called too late."
Rollo watched as the halfling crashed to the ground and rushed over.
"I'll watch her, our legs are...." Rollo caught him self already forgetting his lesson, and started again this time with as much volume as he could muster. "I'LL WATCH HER, OUR LEGS ARE ABOUT THE SAME LENGTH!"
Owain half-orc paladin Friday June 13th, 2008 1:48:40 PM
Owain stares at the human rouge for many minutes, as if considering his request. After a moment, the huge warrior lets out a sigh and strides over to the stumbling halfling. With a fluid motion not normally seen in one so large and muscle bound, the half-orc bends down, scoops the thief up and tosses her over his shoulder.
His face difficult to read, the large paladin continues walking, his arm now tightly clamped around the bound halfling as if she was nothing more than a small sack of potatoes.

And you don't need to yell to make your point get noticed. That's what I like about you Rollo, you're not like the rest. You can get your point across in such a way as not to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck, unlike our half orc friend or that woman who thinks she is the only one who is right about everything. After hearing Rollo's words on the group deciding to return to Jarlwolf (listen = 19), Zeph replies rather soft-spokenly.
"Well Rollo, in truth, the only two that wanted to return the book to Lady Dulcet are Axara and Owain. I feel that we should hold on to the book, keep it secret, and inform Lady Dulcet ONLY... with a message or something. I could even sneak into Dulcet's house and tell her myself if we need to... and maybe steal the lead-box. The second part of my plan is to spread misinformation that the book is still stolen by a random thief, thus diverting the attention off of us. It seems that you, Kiel, and Selemar want to keep the book secret from everyone, including Lady Dulcet. But the truth is, that plan is bunk if just one of us goes to tell her, and it seems we can't control Axara's or Owain's actions in that manner. So I believe we are stuck with either my plan or Axara and Owain's. Do you agree good Gnome?" Zeph explains, trying to find the middle ground in the matter.
"Regardless, it is true that we should put the book's security above everything else- including personal feelings. (eyes Axara ever so slightly) "No one knows how powerful this artifact is. We don't know if some Undead Lich could raise an army of Ghouls if the book fell into the wrong hands. And the worst thing for the Book's security is for us to separate. We can all agree on that, I hope." Zeph says, hoping to make things better to the group, wondering if anyone is actually listening to him.
After his short speeches, Zeph contents himself to keep an ear out while traveling next to Axara and Sebastian.
I guess this should be my duty- hold the group together and advise options. Maybe I should apply for second-in-command?
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Friday June 13th, 2008 9:23:47 PM
Zeph's diplomatic approach towards Axara is somewhat successful. She breaks her rmutism. In a broken voice, she says "Zeph, I know you are trying to be nice to me but you could have done every thing you have done tonight without me. If it was not for angering half of the group, I would have been completely useless. I have never made a positive change in this world and I doubt it is about to start today. Once useless ....." She does not finish the sentence.
When Zeph indicates that splitting might be the worst thing for the group, she looks at him in surprise. Her face is covered with rain and her hair is glued to her face. Her blue eyes are full of sadness as she speaks "Do you really believe I could helpful protecting that book? I believe that if you asked others, they would like nothing more to get rid of me if I promise not to say anything that has transpired tonight." She looks at Kiel with her sad eyes as she says that.
"You can do what ever you think is right with the book. I do not have an opinion to share on that subject. If you have any interest in some of the arcane and you think my 2 copper pieces are worth something, just ask. Other than that, I do not know anything about a book or its thief."
Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29] Saturday June 14th, 2008 8:01:17 PM
Rollo nods to Kiel and Zeph. "I have dealt with very few humans, but as with all things there are exceptions to the norm."
"Zeph I agree a plan is needed, but unfortunately only half of us are willing to discuss having one, and if the mouth decides you should starve it doesn't matter how many berries you pick. The best we can hope is that our enemy shares a similar level of coordination."
Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] Human Rogue Sunday June 15th, 2008 12:10:56 AM
Zeph looks at Axara with a sidelong glance. Well, she sure is a bit different than before. Maybe it just takes the right approach. Although I really am no good at talking to women.
Zeph puts his hands on the back of his head like a reclining child as he walks and looks up at what stars he can spot, enjoying the rain on his face. "Well, of course I think you are useful. Do you think any of us here have any arcane ability? If I got the jist of your powers right, I'm guessing that they come to you naturally and not through study, correct? The really really blue eyes kind of give it away... " Zeph says to Axara.
(Zeph pauses a moment and thinks.)
"Hmm, you got it a bit wrong I think. See, I think you are valuable because you have a different opinion than most of us. We need to see a different view on any decision so that we can make the best choice and thus take the best course of action. The only thing you need to work on is specifically how you state your opinion. Just kinda... control your emotions, I guess, and be open to the possibility of losing an argument. See my point?" Zeph says, happy that someone is listening to him ramble.
"Err, sorry I talk to much." Zeph says quickly towards the end, hoping he didn't say the wrong thing.
I wonder if I should advise her to apologize to Kiel... maybe that is pushing it. I'll just shut up now. Zeph thinks.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Sunday June 15th, 2008 10:00:20 AM
Axara looks at Zeph as more rain falls on her face mixing with her tears. "You really are a gentle man but the gnome can do magic as can the singer. I feel like the 5th wheel of the wagon, make that the 7th." She turns silent, her shinny blue reflecting the light of the torch in the darkness of the night. "State your opinion and shut up if you are overuled? I grew up that way. My father and brothers would order my mother and sisters around and I will be the only one complaining about it. It never changed anything but I could not keep quiet. I never learn to shut up and accept defeat if I felt I was right. Well I always feel I am right so you can see the problem. Learning to shut out as never been my strong point. I get upset and then say things I later regret. Like the last time I talked to my father. You think by now I would have learned to shut up, especially after being sold like a bad cattle."
She turns silent again, memories and emotions assailling her again and she withdraws emotionally to regain control of her feelings. After a while, she speaks again to Zeph "you are perceptive. I have zero skilled in learning magic. Even a failure on that point. I know what I know and that is it. No hope to master the possibilities that magic offers. I know a few tricks and this is all I can do. And not even well. Trust me I don't bring much to the table. May be I should have learned to milk cows and make babies, as my father said."
She sighs and finally put on her hood on her head, her blue eyes disappearing in the darkness of the hood.
DM Kathy Sunday June 15th, 2008 11:06:21 PM
As the rain continues to fall, you begin making your way back toward Jarlwolf. You fall into a marching order of sorts.
Some of you have things to discuss. Axara proves to be less caustic and more self-doubting than she first appeared. Zeph proves to have a talent for diplomacy.
Zeph, Rollo, and Selemar still have doubts about informing Madam Dulcet of the book's recovery. The tricky part, as Rollo points out, is that if the entire group doesn't agree to this, someone will probably inform her.
Sebastian attempts to lighten the walk with a little song about the rain. Kiel keeps to the back, and keeps an eye out for trouble. Perhaps fortunately for you, the night is quiet.
Owain pauses for a moment, then reluctantly scoops up the thief to carry her. "Oh yeah," she grouses. "This is dignified." A few minutes later, though, in a much different and quieter voice, she says, "Thanks, Tiny."
You march through the sodden countryside. The air is still quite chilly, and you are by now pretty wet. The cold is seeping in, and those of you not warmly dressed begin to feel it in your very bones.
After about an hour of walking, everybody make a Will save, DC 10. If you fail, Highlight to display spoiler: {You feel an overwhelming urge to open up the book and take a look inside. After all, perhaps the key for what to do with it, or even how to destroy it, is contained in the book itself! How can you not look at it? It's the only sensible thing to do! }
[OOC: This next part assumes that only a couple of people failed their saves, and that the others were able to stop them doing anything rash. If that proves not to be the case, we'll back up a bit. :) ]
It is well past midnight when you finally return to Jarlwolf. A town of simple farmers and crafters, it closes down pretty early. The buildings are dark and quiet--with one exception. The windows of Dulcet's manor still glow with light. It appears she is waiting up.

Not a care in the world that its raining, matter of fact, enjoying the cold and wetness, Kiel thinks about all that has happened since coming back in to town.
Eyeing everyone. Gauging their strengths and weaknesses. Stopping momentarily on the woman. Then moving on to the others. Then finally on the halfling over Owain's shoulder. And a slight nod.
Seeing that the Lady's light is still on, a beacon in the dark for safety, or perhaps not. Nothing is for sure anymore.
From the rear, Kiel hisses for the group to stop and motions to regroup. Perhaps, before we venture further, we should scout the area. Selemar and your friend, with your night visions, maybe you 2 should scout around the house in the chance there might be someone(s) lurking about for us. Zeph, with your keen ears and eyes, maybe stalking the house, seeing if someone inside is planning something other than a warm welcome. Bind the halflings mouth. The rest of us, be wary here. Talk little and if you must, be as quiet as humanly possible (smiles at Rollo when he says humanly).

When Axara ask to look at the book and even goes so far to try and open the sack he's carrying it in, "What? Whao there! I don't think that is such a great idea." Sebastian tries and keeps the sack away from her. "Axara, What's wrong with you? Just an hour ago you wanted nothing more than to return the book to Dulcet's? "I'd suggest we put off reading that thing until we're indoors somewhere. Preferably inside a monastery or temple somewhere. or perhaps before we pitch it into the volcano."

Owain glances sidelong at the captive Halfling slung over his shoulder, shaking his head at her attempts at wit. Moments later, however, when she seems genuine in her quite thanks, the kind hearted paladin nods slowly. A small smile even creeps across his wide tusked mouth for an instant at the nickname Tiny. Quickly recovering himself, the huge Half-Orc turns and faces the group.
"I agree that we are in need of the box," Owain rumbles, attempting to remain as silent as he can, "particularly since we have heard that it can influence people against their will." The paladin stares at the human sorceress as he says this, trying to gauge if there is more to her strange actions than simply curiosity.
DM Kathy Monday June 16th, 2008 11:46:12 PM
As you walk, Axara suddenly develops a keen interest in the book. Sebastian, however, is wise enough not to let her have it, and over time the strange compulsion subsides. [You don't get a new save, but the compulsion does wear off.]
When you reach town, Kiel suggests scouting Dulcet's manor and possibly making off with the box. Owain agrees that the box would be a good thing to have.
Hearing the suggestion, Zeph moves silently off to scout the situation. Selemar also moves off, considerably less silently. Zeph examines the manor, and it does not appear that Dulcet has trapped her home. As he moves about the ouside of the house, he does occasionally spot a figure moving about inside.
While they search, the rest of the group stands in the rain, and waits.

ooc in regards to skill checks, there is no bad failures, ie hide in shadows/ move silently. They are opposed rolls, ie listen/ spot. You could roll a 5 on a hide in shadows roll, thinking oh great I failed and post it as a failure, but in all reality the person who tries spotting you could of rolled a 4, hence you succeeded. Just assume in your posts, when doing skill checks, that you succeeded until the DM posts that you dont.

Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] Human Rogue Tuesday June 17th, 2008 12:33:37 AM
Ok. So basically, Zeph does what he said he would earlier. He sneaks around to the Library window, hops in, swipes the lead box. Then Zeph will take a quick survey of the house. trying to identify any figures he sees moving about. He is particularly looking for any possible hostiles or anything that may be different from what he saw the house to be last time. If he doesn't get caught, he will hop back out the window with the box and meet up with the group to report in. Thus the job of scout.

Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Tuesday June 17th, 2008 2:05:39 AM
Axara is pretty restless, pacing left and right and looking at Sebastian. After a while she speaks to no one in particular "I know that some of you do not want to tell Madam Dulcet and you might be a majority thinking. I do not know if it is a rigth decision or not but we need to get the book in the case. And may instead of stealing it, we could ask for it. When we ever find the book. Listen, this is powerful magic, very powerful and if we do not curtain its effect, it will attract monsters and evil people. We need to get the case and I am not sure why we should steal it. Anyway, this is just my opinion, just do what you want. "
She moves farther awy from Sebastian. She looks genuinely concerned by the book and does not seem to notice the rain.
Owain half-orc paladin Tuesday June 17th, 2008 8:15:27 AM
The large Half-Orc stands in the rain, still holding the bound thief, and watches as events unfold.
"As I said, no matter what else we do, I think the book needs to be back in that box as soon as possible."
Owain squints slightly, trying to keep the rain out of his small dark eyes.
"I also want to again state that I feel strongly that we need to tell Madam Dulcet about this. She is the one that hired us - we should not treat her as an enemy. Once the others return, let us take a vote and then agree to abide by what the majority decides." Owain adjusts the small weight of the Halfling on his shoulder and lets out a small, unhappy snort. "I would also like to move that we get ourselves in out of this rain ..."
The huge Paladin becomes silent, thinking. After a moment, he turns his gaze to the backpack containing the book. He stares at it intently, considering. Then, inhaling slightly, Owain probes outwardly with the power of his Faith .... (Detect Evil on the book)
OOC I can't believe I didn't do this yet - it's probably a good thing to be sure of though! I was certain that I already did this, but in reading back over previous posts ... apparently not :)

Sebastian continues to watch Azara to make sure she doesn't try to make a grab for the book again. "Yes let's get the book under lock and key again."
The bard only shrugs noncommittal about telling Lady Dulcet or not, but when the Half-orc mentions about getting out of the rain Sebastian agrees whole heartedly "Yes, we should get out of this rain. Maybe we should go inside and tell Madam Dulcet. Dry off, maybe have some hot tea and wait for the rain to stop. Yes let's do that!" The bard seems to be rather excited about the idea now.
Selemar Tuesday June 17th, 2008 3:22:26 PM
If nothing seems amiss, Selemar wanders back to the group
"...I've never heard of a bear tripping anyone. Wolves, yes, but never bears."
When he's by the others "There are a few people around, but that seems to be expected. I lost track of Zeph, but I assume he knows what he's doing. he's quiet."
"I'd say we keep away for now, until we have a better idea of who might be after the book. It's wet, but the rain won't cut our flesh or break our bones. Those who come for the book might. or we could go back and not let anyone know we have the book. I'd rather not lie to Dulcet, but if it saves us some unnecessary killing and keeps the evil thing from the hands of those who would use it, it seems a small harm. Rollo? Sir Tiny? What do you think?"
Readies an action to run from the paladin if necessary
Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29] Tuesday June 17th, 2008 4:52:01 PM "A vote is a brilliant idea." Rollo smiled.
"I feel we should let our stealthy friend return with the box as suggested, so we can safely store the book. As far as Dulcet the knowledge of the book and it's whereabouts is dangerous and we should spare her that danger. I do not believe her an enemy, but a potential source for our enemies to find out the books location and our identities. I do not want her telling everyone I have the book, so the big bad evil knows who to ransom for its return."
"I stand by my previous vote, of hiding the book from all except those here. Those who need supplies in town should do so quietly, and if anyone asks tell them we lost the thief, but we have his trail."
Rollo looked around, "That is my vote."
DM Kathy Wednesday June 18th, 2008 12:01:19 AM
As you wait for Zeph's return, you discuss what you should do next. Axara and Owain feel that you should tell Dulcet of recent developments. Rollo is opposed to telling her, and Selemar seems to lean in that direction. Sebastian has no strong feeling one way or the other.
Maisie thinks you shouldn't tell anyone, and should let her go so that she can also not tell anyone, but she doesn't get a vote.
Zeph is gone some little time on his scouting mission. Watching the house, he recognizes Dulcet's figure pacing, her cat tail twitching behind her in an agitated manner. He sees a man, too, whom he recognizes as the servant. He also sees a young woman who looks like a maid of some kind.
He creeps up to the library windows, and finds them shut. It takes a while for him to ease one open and slip inside. The box is on the table, right where you last saw it. He picks it up, a bit surprised, perhaps, by its weight. The lead lining is heavy.
He slips out again with (he belives) none the wiser of his little exploit.
He rejoins the group about 30 minutes after he left them. The rain is letting up.
Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] Human Rogue (second post) Wednesday June 18th, 2008 9:13:39 AM
Zeph shows up after about 30 minutes.
"Hey guys, nice weather." Zeph says from the shadows as he walks up, lead box in hand.
"Ok, so all I found in there was Lady Dulcet, the Servant who was there last time and a young maid woman. I guess the coast is clear, but if we want to keep the book's location secret, we should ask to speak with Lady Dulcet alone. Those servants can spread information. I vote we tell her about our plan of secrecy, and see where we should go from there. But we should tell her that we will keep everyone else out of the loop, including the Pitchfork Council." Zeph votes.
Selemar Wednesday June 18th, 2008 10:57:02 AM
"I agree we should talk to her, but don't think we should tell her we have the book. The fewer people who know where it is, the better. Right now, the book is stolen, and a well informed thief would know not to target us or Lady Dulcet, as we don't have it. I see no reason to enlighten the thieves."
Does Lango (the wolf) get a vote? He'd probably side with the paladin just to spite Selemar.
Sebastian CharSheet Wednesday June 18th, 2008 4:52:55 PM
Seeing his hope dry roof over his head start to vanish, Sebastian speaks up "Ok, I'll go tell Lady Dulcet and meet you back here, it would look odd to the servants if we all show up while still supposedly looking for the thief. Now would be a good time for anyone who to get the rest of their gear too. What are we going to do with Maisie? Also, open the box up so we can put the book in it, I think I'm breaking out in rash must be allergic to the book." Sebastian absentmindedly scratches at an imaged itch as he hands the book over. He notes it size and weight, "Can't image something that size being so much trouble."
Sebastian going to talk with Lady Dulcet Highlight to display spoiler: { Sebastian knocks on Lady Dulcets door. Once in he'll ask her servants for a towel to dry off with and a cup of hot tea, in hope of being left alone with Lady Dulcet for few moments. He will quickly tells her everything then explains the plan and stresses the need for her to tell no one, but to pass on the story that they are still tracking the thief. The theory being that the book would be safer if no one knows we have it. He also, asks to borrow another book of similar size and weight, thinking it might come in handily at some point. When the servants return Sebastian coughs, and then continues "We hope to catch up to the thief in a week or two, but I was sent to inform you." Once finished with his tea and has the borrowed book Sebatian will take his leave to meet the others.}

Seeing that the decision of the book and telling the lady is out of his hands, and that Zeph returns with his findings, Kiel says: If you need to gather stuff, now is the time to do it. All I need to do is grab my horse, all of my possessions were on it anyways and meet there (points to a tree off to the left about 50 yards from the spot they are now). And with that said Kiel heads off to find his horse and stuff. First he looks in front of the Lady's house where he left him, Then the stables should Phoenix been moved.

Rollo remains outside the city to guard the book and the box.
Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29] d20+4=14 ; Wednesday June 18th, 2008 11:15:35 PM "May I see the box? I may be able to reinforce it.'
Rollo examines the structure, hinge points, locking mechanism.
Perhaps there is some way to reinforce the structure, or permanently seal it. Or at least make it less conspicuous. Perhaps a nice flower pattern.

DM Kathy Wednesday June 18th, 2008 11:57:55 PM Zeph returns with the box, and votes to inform Lady Dulcet. Selemar does not want to tell her, exactly, but does agree that somebody should speak with her.
This is good enough for Sebastian, and, on his own, he sets out for Dulcet's house. Highlight to display spoiler: {You are admitted by the servant, who relieves you of your sodden cloak and escorts you to Dulcet. She smiles when she sees you. "So you did decide to come back after all," she says. "My divinations were unclear on that point. Though it seems that one of you has retrieved the box. Zeph or Selemar would be my guess." She sighs. "I wish I could persuade all of you to accept my hospitality for what remains of the night. It can't be very pleasant out there. Still, even if you do not, I have included a note in the box. I have yet another favor to ask of you, and I hope you will be able to accomplish it while keeping the book safe." She gladly finds a look-alike book for you, an old tome with a cracked leather cover that looks quite properly mysterious. }
Axara's player is on vacation, so she is uncharacteristically silent.
Kiel is impatient to be off, and goes to retrieve his horse. He finds Phoenix still there, although his saddle, saddlebags and gear have been removed and stored in a nearby shed--out of the rain.
Rollo examines the box and finds it quite well-made. When he opens it, he sees a note, folded and sealed, addressed to: Axara, Kiel, Owain, Rollo, Sebastian, Selemar, and Zeph.
When the note is opened, it reads as follows:
My friends,
My divinations tell me that you will likely be successful in retrieving the Codex this evening, but that you may decide not to speak with me afterward. I have therefore taken the liberty of placing this note in the box, in the hope of communicating with you. First, I would like to extend an offer of hospitality for the rest of the night. You have had a difficult evening, and deserve a comfortable rest. If tonight is any indication, I fear that comfortable rests may be scarce for you in the coming weeks.
Second, I would like to ask another favor of you. Tonight's events have demonstrated that word of the find has gotten beyond the boundaries of Cinnamon Valley, as we had feared. It is all the more urgent that the Codex be destroyed as quickly as possible. I will continue to research how this is to be done. There is a book, another book, that I believe may be of great help in my research. It is called the Book of the Guided Way, and there are only a few copies known to exist. One copy was known to be in a nearby monastery, which has since fallen into ruin. I can find no record of the book being taken from the monastery, so I blieve it is still there. I would like your group to journey to this monastery, find the book, and bring it to me. To that end, I have enclosed a map of the route, and a partial map of the ruined monastery.
Look after one another, and keep the book safe. There have been reports of bandits on the road, so take every precaution.
Should you wish to speak to me, or avail yourselves of my hospitality, my door will be open to you for the rest of the night.

Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] Human Rogue Thursday June 19th, 2008 2:02:31 AM "One more reason to tell the old lady: She already knows! Divination, HA. who woulda thunkit..." Zeph laughs to the group.
"Well. Shall we take a nap in the Mansion? Maybe Sebastian had the right idea all along." Zeph says, still wondering if it is possible to keep the book's current location secret.
Even though Lady Dulcet knows, it is still imperative that the public think a random thief stole the book. Zeph thinks.
Zeph then begins walking to the mansion, seeing the wisdom of Sebastian's ways.
Kiel Longarm AC17 HP26 Thursday June 19th, 2008 12:11:02 PM Ok, 1 night in her home. We sleep in shifts like we would outside. In the most defendable part of her house which I would assume would be the library, but this time the windows are locked and curtains drawn. At first light we are gone, to the monastery.
With that said Kiel leads Phoenix to the stables, where he dries him off, brushes him and then, after providing feed, hay and water, places a blanket on him before returning to the house with his belongings.
Once in the house, Kiel will make sure all the doors and windows leading to the library are secured, propping a chair against the door, with the back of said chair(s) lodged under the door handle, closes the curtains, and then, after changing into some dry clothes, and hanging up his wet stuff, rolls out his bedroll and readies for the rest.
as an after thought, Kiel pipes up: I'll take the last watch .
Sebastian CharSheet Thursday June 19th, 2008 3:27:56 PM
When his fellow adventurers start to trickle into Lady Dulcet's, Sebastian with a towel about his neck looks surprised. Putting his cup of hot tea down he stamers, "weren't you guys suppose to for me at the edge of town.... Uh.... I mean Uh... Oh I see you already caught the thief, I see good work." Sebastian tires to motion for the other to stop while pointing out that Lady Dulcet's servants are there. Finally he gives up and shrugs "Sorry, Lady Dulcet it seems the plan to keep it quite isn't going to work."
Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29] Thursday June 19th, 2008 6:43:57 PM
(ooc: Based upon how the rule goes Rollo will do one of two things.)
Rollo reads the note.
The stars betray us? Pointy spies.
"Are you guys tired already? Oh well, If I'm out voted we will regroup in the morning.
This is going to be a long journey if they tire after two hours.
If the recovery of spells per day requires me to sleep in nature
Rollo will agree to meet up with them in the morning then find a comfy spot under a tree where the rain is not hitting and call it an evening after using his Prestidigitation to dry his clothes.
If spell recovery is merely a matter of doing my morning prayer in the woods
Rollo will agree to go back to the mansion. Dry his clothes using prestidigitation, and take a watch.
