You have your breakfast and make your preparations. As you do so, Dulcet's efficient servants place packets of bread, cheese, and dried meat on the table, for you to add to your packs.
"I do not know the specific location of the book you seek," Dulcet replies to Owain. "The map of the monastery complex you have with you is a copy of a map made by Harvest Moon of the Swords of Light."
[All of you have heard of the Swords of Light; an adventuring company formerly based in Cinnamon Valley.]
"As you can see on the map," Dulcet continues, "the Swords explored some of the buildings in the complex, but not all of them. They did not find the book--but then again, they weren't looking for it. It stands to reason, though, that the book is most likely in one of the buildings they did not explore."
"I don't have a specific description," she adds. "Most copies of the book had a phoenix on the cover, I believe, but I can't say for sure."
"You will need equipment for exploring a ruin," she replies to Sebastian. "Rope and so on. I assume you have such things in your gear. If you don't, you should be able to pick them up in town before you leave. Which reminds me..." She leaves the room briefly, and returns with eight small pouches. She hands one to each of you. "Fifty gold is, I believe, the amount we agreed on," she says. "As for provisions, please take these packets with you. The will not last your entire journey, of course, but they will supplement your own supplies."
"The monastery is about a four-day ride," she adds. "Longer if you are on foot. I have a few mounts I can lend, although I cannot supply the entire party."
"Witches do not use spellbooks, Zeph," Dulcet says. "I think I have something that might interest you, though." She leaves the room again and returns with a slim volume on magical theory.
"If there are no more questions," she says, "I suggest you start right away. You are, after all, supposed to be still going after the thieves. You wouldn't spend a lot of time dawdling here." She smiles. "I wish you the best. And take care--there are rumors of bandits along the way."
[OOC: You have two maps--the area map with the monastery marked on it, and a map of the monastery compound. I'm not very good with maps. :) I won't be creating the area map, and we will assume that you follow it and do not get lost. I will have a monastery map available when you get there.]
Hmark Tuesday June 24th, 2008 3:18:18 PM
Hmark takes Rollo's hand, while looking somewhat bemused at the sight of the gnome's armor. The brown haired man also shakes with Zeph.
Madam Dulcet gets down to business, passing everyone - including him! - a sack of coin. This job is looking good already. Except for that horse part.
Hmark's face drops. "You all got horses?" he asks Kiel, somewhat at a loss. He turns to Dulcet. "I ain't got no horse, ma'am. Guess I need to borrow one." The man thinks a bit. "Prolly some rock climbing gear too - rope and pitons and hammers and all. They got that around here?"
After that, the archer is ready to go.
OOC - Should I buy gear throught the Catacombs, or do you want to handle the mundane stuff here?
Sebastian CharSheet Tuesday June 24th, 2008 10:14:31 PM
Sebastian's eyes light up when Dulcet's gives him a pouch of 50gp, "The jingle of coins in one pockets is sweet music indeed. Come let us not dally, make quick our purchases and be off to find a book."
DM Kathy Tuesday June 24th, 2008 11:05:14 PM
You pack the last of your things and are soon off. Dulcet lends Hmark a pretty sorrel mare called Stardancer. Her tack is worn but servicable, and the horse herself seems biddable enough, if a little spirited.
You stop in town for supplies, and then are on your way.
[OOC: You don't need to go to the Catacombs for mundane supplies; just note them on your character sheet and deduct them from your gold. Also, Dulcet has lent Hmark a light riding horse, riding saddle, bit and bridle, and saddlebags. She has one more light riding horse, and one mule, she can lend to other party members, if they need it.]
[As you set out from town, please give me some idea of a marching order. Also, who is carrying the box with the Codex inside?]
Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] Human Rogue Tuesday June 24th, 2008 11:16:14 PM "Oh wait! I needed a horse too!"

Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29] Tuesday June 24th, 2008 11:52:12 PM "Madame if you don't mind I would like to borrow your mule."
Rollo will go into town and purchase a cart for the Mule.
Anyone who doesn't have a horse can ride in the cart."
Kiel Longarm AC17 HP26 Wednesday June 25th, 2008 9:39:59 AM
Tosses his pouch to Rollo when he goes to town to buy a cart. Why dont you purchase some extra supplies for us while you are there, since you are getting a cart. Like rope, extra food for us, extra feed for the horses (ie hay, oats) and anything else that you can think of. Oh, and grab a couple 5 more quivers of arrows for our new archer friend. Please
Kiel leads Phoenix to the grass and lets him graze while he waits for everyone else.
Hmark Wednesday June 25th, 2008 11:16:52 AM
Hmark ducks his head at Dulcet's offer, tugging the front of his hair while replying, "Thank you, Ma'am". The man then goes off to the stables to check out the steed. She gives him an eye, but he's been on a horse or two before, and has no trouble mounting up.
Returning to the group, the 'new archer friend' catches Kiel's request of Rollo. "Five!?!" he exclaims, surprised. "Just how many bad guys you think we're gonna run into?"
Regardless, Hmark hastily adds his sack to Rollo's buying money.
Pulling up to Owain, he looks around at the group, deciding where he'd best fit during their ride. "Sir? You want me near the front or the back?" he asks the half-orc.
Left to his own choice, the brown haired lad would prefer to ride about third.
Kiel Longarm AC17 HP26 Wednesday June 25th, 2008 11:40:59 AM
Smirks at Hmark. Patting his bow, Kiel pipes in: You aint the only one with one of those fancy arrow shooters Hmark. The arrows will be for all to use, but mainly for you being you seem to prefer that in combat. I on the other hand don't mind waiding in to combat and getting messy. pats his two-bladed sword strapped on his horse, next to the bow
Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] Human Rogue Wednesday June 25th, 2008 7:42:58 PM
Zeph thinks for several minutes on the marching order.
" Ok. So, I think that Kiel and myself should ride in the front - me to look out for traps and Kiel because he is probably best at watching for trails. I bet he could spot Goblin tracks from a mile a way." Zeph suggests first.
Then, after thinking a bit more, "I think that Owain should be close to Axara. Nothing is worse than a spell-caster being caught in melee. I would also like Owain to be around the middle so his sword could respond to any threat the quickest. Perhaps Hmark and his bow somewheres in the middle as well- all the better to shoot anything in a 360degrees radius. Then Rollo and his wagon right behind them. Then Selemar and Lango bringing up the rear, so Lango's nose can pick up anything trying to ambush us from behind. Sound good?" Zeph says to the group.
"And as for the Book... Maybe Rollo and his mule could watch over it since they are around the middle and Rollo seems to be a devout fellow resistant to the Book's charms. I also think that maybe Axara should sit in the wagon, as riding a horse could prove difficult for spell casting I hear. Sebastian could accompany her, since they seem to get along." Zeph says, poring over the new book that Lady Dulcet granted him and pausing on the chapter entitled smugly 'The Impotence of Concentration'.
So there we have it: Me and Kiel side by side. Then Owain and Hmark. Then Rollo and Axara and Sebastian. With Selemar and Lango behind. Zeph thinks to himself, wondering if he jumbled that explanation too much.

Rollo catches the barrage of coins being flung at him.
Quite generous of them, but I must be careful to return them some of their gold lest they turn to evil.
"I shall return with supplies for our journey."
Rollo takes the mule and heads into town seeking out the local merchants to gather what he needs.
And that is:
1 weeks worth of rations for 8 people 2 weeks worth of feed for 6 horses 1 additional mule 1 carrage 5 sets of 20 arrows.
List PriceTotal: 145gp 2sp
Rollo first heads to the weapon merchant to find the arrows for Kiel and Hmark, and attempts to haggle with the shop keep for a better deal. (Diplomacy: 10)
After he has the arrows he heads over to Hnan's, resisting the urge to stop by Sweet's or Puk's he's hot on the trail of a pack of thieves after all.
Rollo barters with Hnancy for a carrage, a mule, and the required feed for the trip (Diplomacy: 25). Once the deal is done Rollo toss the arrows and feed into the carrage, and heads over to the Inge's and hobbs' to get the final item on his list a weeks worth of rations. (Diplomacy: 25)
After loading all the goods up and rigging the mules to the carrage, Rollo sets off for Dulcet Manor, but not before stopping in at Sweets for a little nourishment for the return trip.
(ooc: Not sure what discount I get for the diplomacy checks if any, so will wait for your response before figuring the final bill.)
Owain half-orc paladin Wednesday June 25th, 2008 10:01:59 PM
Owain easily mounts his large war horse and listens as plans for their departure begin to come together. He shakes his head in silent wonder when the Gnome returns, cart loaded with supplies.
"I usually prefer to ride in the front, where I can meet any challenger or foe head on," the Paladin growls matter of factly, "but I will ride in the middle if that is what the group prefers. The boy, Hmark, can ride next to me."
Owain's heavy brows furrow as he considers the matter of the box containing the Codex.
"I will of course bow to the wishes of the group, but perhaps it might make more sense if I carry the vile book," he says, his deep voice a low rumble. "I suspect that the Gods of God may grant me strength to stand against its' supposed controlling powers."
OOC: I'm thinking Owain's Paladin powers (divine grace, aura of good etc) might come into play when dealing with the book, so it might make sense that he keep it guarded for now ...

total of 55gp
He puts everything in the cart. He seems happy with the arrangement of him riding in the cart/carriage. He practices with the flute as they travel.
Selemar (Adam Subbing) Wednesday June 25th, 2008 10:41:55 PM
Selemar has no issue with the wolf walking, but he doesn't feel it wise that he be the only one traveling on foot, and suggests he rides in the carriage.
Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] Human Rogue Wednesday June 25th, 2008 11:06:43 PM Ok then. Owain is also a good candidate. By the look of him, he would probably be the last to fall if combat broke out. The only thing I fear is the book getting knocked about in his backpack during a fight. It only takes one random Goblin to hop on his back and we have a sticky situation. Zeph thinks to himself.
"Either way is fine Owain I trust you equally as Rollo. And if you want to be in the front then that is fine too. I just thought it would be better if you could respond to an attack from the back equally as well as an attack from the front. We can't assume all enemies will be as honorable as yourself." Zeph says to the impressively intelligent man.
" Oh, sorry Selemar. I thought you had a mount for some reason." Zeph says to the keen Elf.
"Um. I think I will go visit my stepfather over in the Tannery while Rollo and Sebastian do their shopping. I want to talk to him about some stuff." Zeph says with a quick smile and wave.
"I will be back within thirty minutes."
DM Kathy Thursday June 26th, 2008 12:18:43 AM
An early start seems less and less likely as you think of more things you need to do before setting out on your journey.
Zeph asks to borrow Dulcet's other horse, a gray gelding called Shadow. He is an older horse, but seems fit and sturdy enough.
Rollo claims the mule, Wintershine, and proposes buying a carriage and supplies. Sebastian also has things to buy, so the two of them go about making purchases. Sebastian is able to find everything on his list. Rollo is unable to find anything so fancy as a carriage in humble Jarlwolf, and has to content himself with a second-hand farm cart.
It is mid-morning before you set out, but you believe yourselves well-prepared for what lies ahead.
Kiel and Zeph ride ahead, scouting and alert for trouble. Owain follows them, close enough to the front to engage an enemy, but near enough to the more vulnerable party members to assist if need be. Rollo follows, driving the wagon. Axara sits beside him, head held high, as if she were riding in a palanquin instead of rattling on a farm-cart. Selemar and Sebastian also ride in the cart, with Selemar taking up a position at the rear. Hmark trails the group, watching for attackers coming from the rear. Longo shadows the party, but unfortunately can't come too near without spooking the animals.
[OOC: That's my best interpretation, please feel free to make changes. :) ]
For the moment Owain carries the box and the book, though that may change depending on events.
You do not have good traveling weather. The sky is thickly overcast and a sullen mist clings to the ground. You have not been on the road a half-hour before it begins to rain again.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Thursday June 26th, 2008 11:15:56 AM
Axara does not say anything when Madam Dulcet tells the group via the note that she read them like an open book and that the over precautionary approach of the group by trying to cut off Madam dulcet was a failure. She does not say any "I told you so" or rolls her eyes or snickers. It seems that Rollo and Zeph words have made quite an impression on the sorceress. She is just quiet, happy to have a place to stay away from the rain and a place where she can was and prepare herself.
In the morning at breakfast, she nods politely at Hmark but makes no effort to be either overly friendly or snobbish. She comes out as quiet and potentially shy. She politely thanks Madam Dulcet when taking the gold but she looks very uncomfortable with it. She puts it in her back with some reluctance which is a huge change considering that she was the one worrying about compensation.
She listens to the group and just nod when Zeph mentions that she should ride on the cart. Although she is not too pleased about riding next to Rollo, she says nothing. She covers her head with her hood and stay silent, making it impossible for other to see how she feels or what she thinks.
She is quiet while riding, answering only any question when asked, basically looking like she is brooding or meditating. She is straight up, head high as if she was in a luxurious carriage rather than a farm cart. When the rain starts falling, she tries so cover herself inside the cart if it has a cover. If not, Rollo hears a extremely unlady like curse whispered as the rain wets her robe.

Sebastian is happy enough riding in the cart and not having to worry about controlling a silly horse. The bard sits back and plays a few tunes on his new flute to pass the time (performance 5 {nat 1}). Unfortunately , it seems Sebastian will have to spend some time getting use to the new interment as he blow several miss notes and sharp sounds that bear little resemblance to music.
The rain puts an end to Sebastian's flute practice, as he puts the interment away and pulls his cloak about, "This weather is a bad omen. Perhaps we should find someplace to wait it out? Wonder why the monks abandoned there monastery in the first place?" Sebastian try and thinks of any history or bardic knowledge he as of the Monastery (Knowledge: History 11, Local 10, Bardic 9).

Owain winces slightly at the less than melodious tones emanating from Sebastian's flute.
As he rides, the large half-orc adjusts his pack, with the box and Codex safely inside, and then sighs slightly as the rain begins to fall ... again.
"I do not know if this rain is an omen or not," Owain calls back to the bard, "but I don't know if we want to stop riding so soon after we have started. Perhaps we should ride a bit longer in the hope that the rain will not last long."
The paladin considers Sebastian's question regarding the details of the abandoned monastery, searching his memory to see if he ever heard anything during his time in the temple (Knowledge: Religion d20+4=11)
He also continually scans the road and surroundings, always alert for trouble. (Spot d20+2=14)
Zeph smiles as the rain begins to fall again, preferring it to the overwhelming heat the sun can produce. He keeps an eye and an ear out for trouble, constantly looking for any ambush-intended traps that may lay ahead for the group. Zeph tries to remember anything about the area or religion that could possibly clue him into Sebastian's question.

Hearing a strange and unnatural sound coming from behind him he turns to see the young bard attempting to play the flute. Shaking his head he says only loud enough for the person riding beside him to hear: Zeph Only Highlight to display spoiler: { That bard is gonna let everyone know we are coming, much less that cart, but this rain should help mask his blundering on that wooden monstrosity. }
Not complaining in the slightest when the rain begins anew, Kiel keeps the party moving forward, stopping only briefly from time to time to jump down and examine any unusual tracks should any be noticeable. Kiel keeps a wary eye not only on the road ahead, but from behind and from anywhere someone(s) could be lurking.

When the rain begins, Axara looks in vain for shelter. Alas, the cart is not a covered one. There is, however, a quantity of canvas folded up in the back, which she could drape over herself. Then again, the overall effect would be fairly undignified.
Hmark concentrates on keeping his bowstring dry and watching the group's backtrail. He sees nothing, however.
Sebastian attempts to enliven the hours with a little tune, but his performance lacks a certain...something. Rollo attempts to help, but the overall effect proves more irritation than entertainment.
Sebastian, Owain, and Zeph all struggle to recall anything they may have heard of this monastery. They come up blank on its origins, but Sebastian does recall something about the Swords of Light having encountered something in an abandoned monastery a couple of years ago. What was it, though? A dragon? An owlbear? A horde of goblin raiders? He cannot recall.
Zeph and Kiel don't spot anything untoward. Kiel sees tracks, but none that are especially interesting; just the general sign of farmers, farm beasts and farm carts having traversed this road during the past weeks.
Around noon, the rain lets up, the overcast lightens, and you begin to hope for better traveling weather. Then more clouds roll in, and it rains again in the afternoon.
By the time you are ready to camp, it is not actually raining, but the world around you is very wet. So are many of you.
Hmark Friday June 27th, 2008 11:07:02 AM
The afternoon wears on, and Hmark rides in the back. He's soaked, his stuff is soaked, Stardancer is soaked - just another day in the valley, he sighs philosophically.
As evening approaches, and the group settles down to camp, the man leads his horse over to Kiel. Figuring the other man has some experience, Hmark follows his lead in removing the horse's equipment, tying it up, feeding it, and rubbing it down.
Once the horse is OK, the brown haired lad sets about to find anything resembling semi-dry firewood.
As the evening wears on, he can't help but inquire of Rollo - "So, what's with the, uh, unique armor you're wearing?"

Axara is truely miserable as the rain keep falling, completely socking up her dress and ruining it. She thinks for a second or two about going under the canvas but she knows it would be undignified and she would suffer the snickering of the men.
She sits there, head up high, getting drenched, wishing she was back inside a warm house, enjoying a nice mug of grog.
When the group finally stops for rest, she stands a few seconds to see if one of the men will take her hand and help her come out of the cart. No one does and she climbs down the cart, cursing under her breath.
She looks down at the mud and the wet ground and asks to no one in particular "Are we supposed to sleep on the wet ground? wouldn't be nicer if we found a cave or a place to protect us from the rain and the wetness?"

Owain half-orc paladin Friday June 27th, 2008 2:42:32 PM
Owain dismounts his large warhorse and sets about preparing to camp for the night. He notes with satisfaction that the newcomer, Hmark, has the presence of mind to look for fire wood.
Hopefully the ranger will be able to make a decent fire in these conditions ... the half-orc thinks wryly.
Although used to traveling and making camp in less than ideal conditions is something the huge warrior is very accustomed to, Owain can't help but wonder how many of the others have such experience.
"I recommend that we take watch in groups of two," the paladin says, his voice a low, deep gravel over the falling rain, "that way there is less chance of anyone on watch falling asleep. Each pair can keep watch for two hours and then wake the next pair. Hmark and I can take the first watch."
Once finished with his own things, Owain helps anyone else in need and then, taking out his holy symbol from around his neck, kneels down for evening prayer, eyes calmly closed in silent reverence.

Once off the cart, Sabastian looks around at the camping spot that Kiel, Zeph and Owain picked put, "Here? A bit primitive for my taste. Couldn't we have stop at the last farm we passed? Oh well." Sighing, the bard speaks a magical word or two while making some motion with his hand obviously cast a minor spell (Prestidigitation). Then using his magic, he passes his hand over his cloths from top to bottom causing all the water and dampness to fly off his clothing and person in all directions much like when a dog shakes he fur, leaving himself clean and dry. The whole process takes less than a minute. "That's better. I'll stand last watch."
Having been standing near Axara when he looks up to see that she is now wetter than she was before, "Oh my.. Sorry about that, here let me fix that." Waving his hand near her he cleans the water from her and her garments as well. "Any one else?"

With Zeph's help, Kiel and Selemar find a place for the group to camp: a relatively dry patch protected by a stand of evergreens. A blackened fire-ring suggests that this site has been used before.
Sebastian casts a minor spell, and is able to use its effects to dry off many of the group's belongings. Hmark and Kiel tend to the horses, and Owain begins setting up a watch, claiming first watch for himself and Hmark.
Sebastian claims last watch, and Kiel declares he will watch with Axara.
[The arrangement will do for this evening, since the sorceress has cast no spells. In general, however, she will want to be on first or last watch, since she needs 8 continuous hours of rest to regain any spells she has cast that day.]
You gather firewood. You find that if you dig into the ground cover, you can find handfuls of dry needles, which you can use to light damp twigs, which will light damp branches. The resulting fire is smoky, but provides welcome heat.
You keep watch through the night, but it is uneventful save for another light shower.

She goes under it and decides to get herself more comfortable by taking off the armor. She is just wearing her old robe with a cotton gown under for sleeping.
I forgot what it is like to travel with men only. Luckily, we started on such bad terms that I won't have to worry about unwanted advances or peaking. I guess, there are some advantages about not being able to play with others.

When Kiel wakes her up for the guard, she quickly get dressed, happy that she has some kind of cover and does not have to do it in front of all the men. As she stands guard, she whispers to Kiel. "Because I have not used my magic, I can cut down into my sleeping time, but going forward, I will need my beauty rest so I will take the first or last shift. Gradually, his thoughts drift around to thinking about the good-looking brunette in the nearby makeshift tent.
Man, she's REALLY nice-lookin. She's also a stuck up princess wannabe. So? She's REALLY nice-lookin. And Kiel's making a play for her. Well maybe, maybe not. Besides, she's REALLY nice-lookin. And you gotta work with her for...heck, could be months. NOW you're talking! Yeah, me and her.. And if you get her mad, she'll make your life unbearble. Might be worth it. She's REALLY nice-lookin. And Kiel's got that really large, sharp sword. hrm... Maybe she doesn't like him. Maybe you should make sure. Maybe. But, man. She's REALLY nice-lookin.
Morning dawns, and the lad sets about packing his gear and getting breakfast, all the while stealing looks at Axara...and occasionally Kiel. He says very little, as he's somewhat distracted.
When the party moves out, he rides in the back.
Geez, she acts like we're her personal servants or something.... But she IS really nice-lookin....
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] Monday June 30th, 2008 3:20:21 PM
As Axara sits on the cart manned by Rollo, she is deep loat in her thoughts as she thinks about her companions on this journey ..... "Kiel ..... leader of men, even if his paranoia some times leads him to the wrong decision. Has no love lost for me but still act like a gentleman. Hard to figure out. would have porbably prefered I stay with Madam Dulcet. Rollo ..... insane yet falsely naive .... convinced a lot of the group members that is the right leader. He thinks he can be a father figure to me. A complete mystery to me, yet I believe his intentions towards me are pure. Sebastian .... cowardly and clumsy and seem to like the finer things in life. Look nearly out of place as much as me. He might surprise all of us by his actions when we get tested or he will be the reason we all die. He and only him knows that answer. Seems not to be bothered by me and my mood. An interesting character. Selemar ... a strange elf with a wolf. Quiet with little interests in me or the rest of the group. An elf. What else to expect? Owain .. a half-orc paladin. Right and mighty. Will do anything for good, even lead us to our death. He is kind and strong. I wonder how is black and white world wil do when it will meet face to face with the grey I have known all my life. Will he trust to purify me by the sword? Zeph ... unassuming yet a real leader. Looks for consensus and peace. A voice of reason in this group of strong personality. Good at making logic points. The quiet force of a strong leader. He seems to tolerate me to a certain point and did want me to stay. I wonder if he will regret his choice at some point. Hmark .... the newest guy. Has not spoken to me. I do not blame him as I have not spoken to him. He looks like a farm boy running away from his destiny, like me. If he finds out I am a farm girl pretending to be a sorceress, he will remind me of the farm hierarchy: hay - Farm girl on top of it - Farm boy on top of her. Unless he is different and does not buy that hierarchy but I cannot take the chance. I am better off playing the Ice Queen, sadly, one of my most common roles. Anyway, he is looking for adventures and surely does not find me interesting or attractive at all. all of us .. not a band of brothers for sure. Not even a band. A conglomerate of personality, goals and aspirations. I wonder if we will ever gel into something stronger. I would settle for a real group of friends ..... yeah that would be worthwhile .....
suddenly her face is fully illumated by a smile which last for a few second before the drearyness of the day take over.
OCC: had a bit of free time and decided to do a small recap of what is going on inside my little sorceress. Sorry about the second post.
Owain half-orc paladin Monday June 30th, 2008 3:52:07 PM
Owain finishes with his evening prayers and then doe whatever he can to help the rest of the group prepare for nightfall. He pays special attention to the Codex in order to insure that it is safely secured and under his protection at all times, awake or asleep.
Later, when everyone in the group is fast asleep, Owain and Hmark take the first watch. Owain stands alert, his back against a tree, his sword drawn an his alert eyes scanning the area. As the time rolls on, the half-orc notices that Hmark, while wide awake, seems to be letting his thoughts drift.
Not quite the ideal way to stand watch ... the paladin thinks with a small, inward smile. A silent attacker would have his throat cut long before his drifting thoughts returned to the here and now.
The next morning, as Owain is packing for the groups departure, he catches Hmark's gaze as it drifts toward the attractive sorceress.
Ahhh, the warrior notices in understanding, that explains much.
Owain makes his way over to the newcomer.
"She is attractive and mysterious, isn't she?" the paladin growls, adjusting the buckle on a pack and being careful not to make eye contact. "Always remember though, that beauty is only as deep as one's skin. What is important is what lies in one's heart."
Owain glances over at Hmark.
"Remember that always," the half-orc rumbles, "and do not let outer beauty sway you into rash actions. Actions such as letting your mind drift while on watch, for instance."
Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] Human Rogue Monday June 30th, 2008 7:24:36 PM
(OOC: Well, it seems that Zeph will be on watch with either Rollo, Sebastian, or Selemar. Any one of them are fine with him. SO I will write a few words he would say in any instance. Mostly he likes to ask questions, being always curious.)
Zeph spends most of his time on watch reading his book by the fire and occasionally looking around. Jeez. I hope that the other guy is more vigilant than me. I just can't stop reading this book! Zeph thinks.
To any of the three: "So it seems that this book that Lady Dulcet gave me is separated into chapters that discuss the main topics on using magic. Each chapter has some witty title and begins with a short story related to that title. For example, chapter three, The Impotence of Concentration begins with a story about a man who was trying to cast a spell called Ray of Enfeeblement while riding a horse. Apparently, the horse got scared and reared up while he was casting. He maintained his concentration enough to execute the spell, but he lost concentration on the direction of the spell's aim... thus rendering him impotent. How odd. [b]" Zeph says with a chuckle.
IF Sebastian: [b]"So. I think I overheard you saying to Axara that you are engaged? I'm curious to how a family man came to find himself in this line of work."
IF Selemar: "You know I envy elves sometimes. Your people always seem to be more at ease than the rest of us, I wish I could do that. I knew an elf once... a few years back. Would you happen to know of the elves that live in Culverwood? There is one named Tina that I would like to speak to again one day.... Oh yeah, and how did a pair like you and Lango ever match up? You guys seem to fight all the time."
IF Rollo: "Ok, so I have been itching to ask you some questions. You said something about Eberyon earlier when we were looking for the Evil Book. What is that? Also, I have seen you cast some spells and yet you are not impeded by your... armor the way this book that Lady Dulcet gave me says you would be. How do you come by your power?"
Sebastian CharSheet Monday June 30th, 2008 10:34:30 PM
Sebastian sleeps soundly and warm, until the early hours of the morning when he is awoken for his watch. Yawning he gets up and stretches and looks around, he puts a bit more wood on the fire.
Chatting with Zeph during the watch he relates some of what's in the book of magic. Sebastian shrugs, "An amusing tale on the importance's of concentration. My mentor had a rule #32 'The importance of concentration is proportional to the danger your in. Nothing focuses the mine like starring death in the face. But, it not recommended as training exercise.' Ah, I still remember the first time, I cast magic. It was purely accidental; luckily I was able to put the fire out before the house burned down. What type of magic do you hope to lean to cast? Perhaps I can give you some pointers?"
Later in the watch Zeph ask about Sebastian engagement, "Yes, I'm engaged to the most wonderfully and talented Lilly. She a sweet girl an I'm luck she's agree to my proposal over all the others, but alas, we are not wealthy enough to marry so she convinced me that a life of an adventurer is the way to wealth. Until then, I keep in touch with her by writing letters. She really enjoys reading about my stories. What about you are you engaged? Someone special?"
Sebatian spend some time writing near morning, while waiting for the rest of the group to getup.
DM Kathy Tuesday July 1st, 2008 12:23:06 AM
As you camp, you make various observations. Some of you exchange confidences. Some of you keep your thoughts to yourselves--for now.
There is no rain in the morning--only the high overcast. You make a hasty breakfast and depart, assuming your marching order from before. Today's travel, while still too chilly to be actually pleasant, is considerably better than yesterday's. Rain threatens, but does not fall.
After your noon break, you note that your trail has begun to climb a little. Looking ahead, you see steep, tumbled hills, which pass in and out of sight as you follow the road through light forest.
Spot check, DC 16 Highlight to display spoiler: {About 20 feet ahead, you see a group of people hiding just off the trail. They are clad largely in black and are probably not a welcoming committee.}
Zeph [AC17 HP25/25] Human Rogue d20+5=22 ; d20+9=25 ; d20+4=17 ; d20+7=19 ; d20+7=16 ; d20+6=24 ; d20+4=15 ; d8=3 ; d6=1 ; Tuesday July 1st, 2008 1:48:17 AM
Zeph rides his horse in front as the usual marching order dictates. He keeps an observant eye out, always wary of the sneaky things that thieves and cut purses will do for money, once being one himself.
Zeph's eyes widen as he notices something ahead. He raises his hand suddenly to stop the group traveling behind him, then he motions to Kiel next to him. Zeph scans the immediate area in front of the group for traps, snares, and other common things that bandits use.
If we can be the ambushers rather than the ambushees, then we will be much better off.
He tries to tell Kiel what is ahead, without giving away that he knows about the upcoming ambush.
Zeph hops down from his horse once the wagon and everyone comes to a halt and leans over to whisper to Kiel.
"Bandits, could be a dozen or more. I will sneak around and try to catch them off guard. I suggest you follow suit around in a different path. I will tell Owain to prepare for battle and to charge in as soon as he gets the signal from one of us... the signal should be one of our arrows zipping into the group and a sharp sequel, eh?" Zeph adds that last part with a little wink and chuckle to Kiel.
After he is done whispering to Kiel, he walks over to Owain and whispers to him quickly, "Bandits about 20 feet ahead hidden in the bushes. Kiel and I will sneak around and surprise the would-be cutthroats. Tell the others surreptitiously. Charge in sword drawn when you get the signal from us- which will probably be a sharp scream, if you get my drift." Zeph speaks to Owain, smiling.
I know Owain is all about facing enemies honorably... but does he think these guys will return that honor? I just hope he sticks with this plan. Maybe the part about him charging in when he gets the signal will keep him happy. Zeph thinks
Then Zeph walks to the back of the wagon, pretending he has to use the bushes in order to fool the Bandits if they see him (bluff=24). He winks to Rollo, Axara, Sebastian, Selemar, and Hmark as he does his pee-pee dance to the bushes and disappears.
Zeph will sneak about in the shadows, longbow drawn, looking out for traps. Zeph will try to get a good sneak-attack position on the biggest bandit he can spot, no more than 30feet away. He will then wait for Kiel to make his move or something else to screw up.
Combat: Ready Action: As soon as something goes awry, he hears a battle call, a scream, or otherwise gets a signal from Kiel, Zeph will let his arrow fly, switch to his Warhammer, and try to disappear back into the shadows for his next strike.

Owain half-orc paladin d20+2=13 ; d20+2=5 ; Tuesday July 1st, 2008 7:43:17 AM
"I understand," Owain says with a slight nod, "we will be ready."
The half-orc squints slightly, attempting, with little success, to see these ambushers for himself. (Spot check: d20+2=13)
"Oh, and Zeph," the paladin mutters quietly, casting a sharp glance toward the rogue, "no unnecessary killing. We are not common thugs, even if they appear to be."
Owain watches the man move away and then casually but quickly relays the plan to the remaining members of the group, taking care not to give any indication that anything is amiss to the apparent ambushers up ahead.
Once everyone understands, Owain waves his hand broadly and lets his deep voice carry to all in the group, (and, more importantly, to any of the ambushers close enough to hear ...) "Enough rest! We need to get moving if we are to get to our destination by nightfall. Let us be off again!"
With that, Owain spurs his horse forward and leads the group calmly though the trees and up the nearest hill ...
Axara[AC: 17 HP 18/18] d20-1=17 ; Tuesday July 1st, 2008 9:25:41 AM
Axara is little surprised as Zeph stops, talks to Owain and then go relieve himself in the bushes. She turns her head by reflex as if wanting to give him some privacy he did not seem to request. "You would think that after all these adventures I would not react like a prudish little girl. Well, at least he is lucky. All he has to do is stand. None is this squatting between two bushes and keeping your robe and dress up to your waist to avoid disrtying. Yes, being a man has its priviledges.
Owain then addresses the group which confuses axara even more. "rest? nightfall? what is he talkign about? Is it too much sun on the helmet?"
Then the sorceress, who does not have the best eyes decide to pay attention to what is ahead and to her surprise notices that there is an unwelcoming committee ahead. she takes a deep breath knowing that there will be blood dropped in the upcoming minutes. She concentrates and focuses herself. Energy starts tingling in her hands as her spell is ready to strike within a few seconds.

The ride starts, and then stops, and then Zeph goes into his dance routine. "What the hey?" Hmark wonders aloud, totally confused by the bizarre behavior. [Spot 11]
Once Owain passes back the word of an imminent ambush - but don't give any indication that anything is amiss - the brown haired lad tugs at his goatee. He'd like to pull his bow out, but there's no reason for him to do so - other than I'm about to get plugged full of arrows. Gritting his teeth, Hmark eases Stardancer forward.

After climbing into the cart for the second day of travel, Sebastian takes a nap as the cart bumps along the road. He wakes up when the cart stops, yawning he looks around seeing Zeph chat with Owain then take a leak before disappearing into the brush. The bard is return to his nap when the Half-orc paladin casually relays the plan to them.
Looking worried, Sebastian peers ahead along the road (spot 12) and speaking softly "Are you sure? I don't see anything ahead. I'll volunteer to stay here and guard the book while you check it out? No? ... Well it's was just a suggestion. Well perhaps some minor magic would help."
Sebastian cast a minor spell pointing one finger at each Owain, Kiel, and Hmark. Then whispering the three can hear him clearly, "Can you hear me testing 1,2,3. You should be able to hear my whispers and you can whisper messages back to me without anyone else hearing you. I'll relay messages to the others. It's good for about 130feet. I find it very useful on stage for when someone forgets their lines. Not that I have every forgotten my lines."
Nervously fingering his crossbow at the belt, Sebastian clears his throat as Owain suggest they move on, "Yes how about something to march to?" The bard starts to recite some marching lyrics:
"Oh, the noble Duke of York He had ten thousand men He marched them up to the top of the hill and Marched them down again"
"And when you're up, you're up And when you're down, you're down And when you're only half way up You're neither up nor down!"

(ooc:Sorry about the unexpected days off)
Rollo has spent the last two nights whittling a small statue of a Grig playing a fiddle from an old piece of oak he found while scavenging for fire wood. The trip so far uneventful, Rollo was enjoying the trek thus far.
It wasn't until mid-day three that something interesting happened.
While traveling down the road he noticed a man dressed all in black hiding in the bushes down the path.
He had seen this before. Deep in the fey realms there was a tribe of albino hobgoblin worshipers of a deity known as the ever present shadow. They had many bizarre customs for instance they could only walk towards a light source for fear they would step on the god beneath their feet. But what this current situation reminded Rollo of was the ritual of their high priests who would dress completely in black and set out to serve in their gods sted as shadows of other creatures and objects. But these did not appear to be albino hobgoblins, nor did they seem to have the dedication required to faithfully represent the shadow of a bush. Nope, these were highway men.
The column came to a halt and so Rollo brought the cart to a stop as well.
He watched as those up ahead plotted and schemed.
He was never much for sword play diplomacy and when Zeph made his exit Rollo descended from the cart and headed for the front of the column.
Mustering his most authoritative and diplomatic voice he shouted to those hidden. "In the name of Eberyon, I call on provision 15 of the treaty of the second year, that you send a representative to discuss the purview of this exchange. Refusal will declare your intentions as malice and your lives forfeit. If it is good you seek we can discuss trade or charity. It is through these words that we shall have peace and understanding." As you weave through the forested area, Zeph spots an ambush in the making. He immediately calls a halt, and discreetly spreads the word to the rest of the group.
Hmark pulls out his bow, and Sebastian casts a spell that will let you all communicate more easily. Rollo also casts a spell, to protect him from enemies. Axara readies a spell, and Owain prepares to lead the group into combat.
Some of you had other things you planned to do, but they will have to wait for the moment. The bandits were lying in wait for you, and when you abruptly stopped a scant 20 feet from their position, they realized something was amiss. Before all of your plans are finished, therefore, you are interrupted.
A human man steps out onto the road. He is a rangy, nimble-looking fellow wearing a chain shirt and carrying a longbow. A rapier hangs at his hip.
With him is a half-orc, wearing a chain shirt and an unpleasant grin. He carries a falchion.
Make a spot check, DC 16. Everyone who makes this one, or the last one, Highlight to display spoiler: {You can see at least three more bandits still hiding among the trees.}
"Good afternoon!" the human man calls. He is smiling. "And please put down your weapons. We intend you no harm. We'd just like to relieve you of a little portable wealth, and you'll be on your way. Coin and pretties is all we're after, so you can keep your animals and whatever cargo you're hauling in that wagon."
His smile vanishes. "Or, we could play it the hard way, where we slaughter you and take everything. It's up to you." He pauses, waiting for your response.

(OOC:Did I make it into the bushes before the Bandit leader showed up? I will assume so for now, but will fix it if I didn't make it. Can you please specify next time exactly where in my planned actions I am interrupted? =)
Zeph is still in the bushes and trees from his performance, hoping that he is still well-hidden from the bandits. He travels a distance from where he entered the shrubs and stops when he hears the leader talk.
Leader, Half-orc. One, two, three in the trees. Zeph counts to himself.
I will see what the group chooses to do before I take my shot. I think the Leader needs an arrow in him to take him down a peg or two. Maybe Axara can bluff us out of this one. Think they would believe they were surrounded if Kiel and I shot arrows simultaneously? I just hope that Rollo doesn't tell everyone to give up their possessions. They will have to pry my valuables off my dead, cold hands. Zeph thinks to himself as he draws arrow back and takes aim at the Leader.
(OOC: I suppose that the rolls from before still count? Since it was probably just a few moments ago.)

Before Axara can say anything to Rollo, the bandit leader appears, followed by his henchman. The sorceress first reaction is to open her mouth but before she says anything she remembers the scolding she got a couple of night ago and the bickering that followed after she took the lead with Maisie and the book.
"I could try to bluff or intimidate these bandits but Kiel or Rollo would probably not like what I would say and we would be back at square one. I better shut up and go along. After all, since I have shut my mouth, the men have been tolerating me."
She looks around to see if she cannot see more of the bandits but her sight is not the greatest. "So there is at least two and a bunch hidden. Who knows how much? I better be ready.
"Sebastian, can you please take the reins of the cart? Rollo, in his incomprehensible approach has abandoned his position and I need someone to drive the cart if we need to move it. I am not very good at it and I need my hands free for my magic. And please keep singing. It somehow make me feel better about myself. And I do like you by my side. For moral suport."
She then looks toward Hmark at the back, hoping that the farm boy fighter is protecting her back.

Owain's eyes narrow as the brigands emerge and confront them. Without turning to look behind him at the rest of the group, he slowly raises his hand and signals that they all stop. Patting his warhorse once to keep it calm, the paladin nods.
"We have very little of value," Owain calls out, his deep voice booming, "and we have no intention of giving you what little we do have."
Owain pauses for a moment to make sure his words sink in.
"What's more, I can promise you that if you try and take it by force, at least half of you will die in the attempt," the massive half-orc says with a grim, matter of fact air. "Are any of you ready to die today for a few gold coins? Turn around and leave us ... now or we will defend ourselves, and you will each pay the consequences."

Sebastian uses his bardic ability to inspire courage in his teammates.
The bandit leader sighs a little. "Adventurers. They never learn. Very well, we'll play it your way."
With that, he fires a shot at Owain. It's an excellent shot [critical threat, but does not confirm], and strikes the paladin for 8 damage.
The half-orc seems to go into some kind of fury, and advances on Owain. He swings his falchion, but it's a wild swing that does not connect.
Meanwhile, the bandit archers pop from their hiding places to fire on the group. One fires on Kiel, hitting for 8 damage. Another shoots at...well, it's hard to tell who she was shooting at; her shot is exceptionally poor. A third shoots at Axara, hitting the sorceress for 7 damage. And one targets Sebastian, hitting for 3 damage.
Zeph is not idle as arrows and steel begin to fly. He fires his own shot at the bandit leader, but it bounces harmlessly off the man's chain shirt.

Here is your combat map.
Good guys are in blue, bad guys are in red. Areas off the road are accessible, but you can't run or charge through them. The dark-green circles are trees, which provide cover. The light-green smudgies are bushes, which provide concealment, but not cover. Moving through bushes costs double; you can't move through trees.

Crap Crap Crap. Zeph thinks to himself as he winces when he sees his friends get hit by arrows.
Ok, three options here: Option A: I stay hidden and try to peg this leader guy. I stay out of harm's way as long as they don't spot me, but my group will get stuck with more arrows. Option B: I can charge the Falchion-wielder and flank him with Owain. I remain somewhat safe but my group still gets pegged by those three bandits they don't see, and so do I. Option C: I charge the three bandits and get them in melee to make firing arrows oh so difficult for them, thus saving my party... but then they will probably pull out swords and I will be fighting a three-on-one battle that I cannot win... Crap Crap Crap Zeph thinks to himself quickly as he surveys the battle and considers his options.
Well... I always wanted to be reigned in as a hero... Even if it kills me. I have to protect my friends Zeph thinks as he charges through the woods at the three hidden bandits he spotted earlier, still attempting to remain hidden as best he can.
Zeph puts up his LongBow and Pulls out his WarHammer as he runs to the nearest hidden bandit he sees. He takes a swipe at him/her with his hammer, hoping he caught the bandit by surprise. Zeph hits the bandit in the ribcage, happily hearing a crack and feeling a slight bit of pleasure at the pain the bow-wielding thief must be feeling.
Combat: Move Action: Zeph moves as quickly as he can while still remaining relatively hidden in the trees, hoping that a combination of Speed and Shadows will catch the nearest Arrow-minded hidden bandit off-guard.
(I assume that I will catch him/her off-guard with running through the trees at him, so I guess that will warrant a sneak attack? If not, just subtract the damage.)
Standard Action: Attack=20 (along with Sebastian's song) (I assume I hit) Damage Total= 10 (With sneak attack and Sebastian's song)
(OOC: In this situation, I don't know if I roll a new hide/move silent, or use the ones from before. I just rolled new ones since it is a new round in combat. I also don't know my relative distance from the hidden bandits. maybe a grid-map will help us out?? Especially since positioning is so important to Rogues)

So Zeph decides to move to bandit 1 and take his action, again, trying to remain as hidden as possible.

Hmark is a little surprised when he sees the arrows flying towards his companions. He eyes turns big when he sees an arrow go deep inside Axara's flesh. "You want to play pin the donkey? Let me show you how it is done!" He fires one arrow then another one at the nearest bandis (3# I believe). The first shot is ok (19) but the second one is perfect (29 natural 20 - critical), going throw the throat of the bandit. The ex farm boy smiles and get ready to kill more bandit.
OOC: If 3 is down before Hmark turn, he will aims the second nearest (4 i believe)

Axara lets a scream go as the arrow enters deep into her flesh. She sees her old robe getting stained with blood and she clinch her jaws to control the pain.
"Head! Go for the head. The rest will run away once the head is cut off" The magical energy bolts gather in her hand she unleashes that toward the human leader. Two separate strings of energy missile hit him.
Spell failure test: 1d100 = 56 Magic Missile towards Human leader: #1: 4hp damages, #2: 3 hp = total 7 hp

Yes, please start your sub posts now.
Also, Alain, a natural 20 is not an automatic critical hit. You have to roll again to confirm the crit. Roll again with your same attack bonus, and if you hit the bandit's AC, you confirm the critical.
See my DM post--the leader rolled a natural 20 against Owain, but did not confirm.
Sebastian [AC:16, hp:14/17]CharSheet d20+6=25 ; d8+2=9 ; Thursday July 3rd, 2008 11:21:06 AM
As the battle starts, Sebastian mumbles nervously to himself "Oh dear". Then when he is hit with an arrow "AH! Ouch!". Picking up his light crossbow, Sebastian points it in the direction of the nearest shooter and pulls the trigger as he continues to recite his lyrics. (target #3, hit ac 25 dam 9 {includes bard song tohit & dam bonus})
" He marched them up to the left He marched them up to the right He marched them up to the top of the hill And oh what a lovely sight
Oh, when you're up you're up And when you're down you're down And when you're only half way up You're neither up nor down!"

DM Kathy [supplemental] Thursday July 3rd, 2008 11:44:42 AM
Bardsong applies to weapon damage, not magic damage. So add to the arrow shot, by all means, but not the magic missiles.
Told you I was a stickler. :)

Owain roars with pain and rage as the arrow bites into him. One hand firmly holding the reigns of his warhorse, the paladin rips his huge great sword and prepares to charge the leader, only to be blocked by the falchion wielding half-orc.
Letting out a mighty battle cry, Owain swings his sword at the the half-orc blocking his path and feels a satisfying crunch as his blade finds its' target. (Attack roll: d20+10=17 Damage roll: 2d6+6=16)

Kiel Longarm Human Ranger (Addison/Zeph Subbing for BigTim/Kiel) d20+6=20 ; d8+4=8 ; Thursday July 3rd, 2008 3:08:42 PM
Kiel sees Owain enter combat with the opposing Half-Orc and sees the opportunity to flank him.
Kiel jumps off of Phoenix and pulls out his Double-Bladed Sword in one swift motion. He then takes a swipe at the offending Half-Orc's backside as Kiel lands on his feet. Kiel takes a healthy chunk of meat off the Half-Orc's backside.
Combat: Move Action: Gets off horse and moves the 5foot to the square on the other side of the Half-Orc Owain is opposing. Standard Action: Standard Attack = 22 (With Sebastian and I forgot to add the masterwork weapon bonus.) Damage = 8
(Note that since only one attack was made, because you can only attack with more than one weapon in a full attack round, it counts as a two-handed weapon rather than dual wielding. Thus the greatness of double-weapons. :)

[OOC: In combat, you would have to make a hide/move silently check each round. If you attempt to move while hiding and moving silently, you move at half speed. In order to hide, you have to have someplace to hide yourself. For example, you cannot now hide from Bandit 1, as you are right in front of him. You could hide from just about everyone else, though.]
Hmark fires twice at Bandit 3, and hits twice, although the tree in between them makes it more difficult. Sebastian has no such impediment, and his crossbow bolt finishes Bandit 3.
Axara pegs the leader with a Magic Missile.
Owain gives the half-orc a face full of greatsword. Kiel also joins the fray, leaping off of Phoenix who promptly departs the field.
The half-orc seems to be going on pure adrenaline, but he stays in the fray. He steps out of his vulnerable position, targeting Kiel] with his next attack. His falchion carves into the ranger [hit AC 22 for 16 damage].
The human leader moves up to flank Kiel, drawing a rapier as he moves. He tries a tricky little maneuver to skewer Kiel, but ends up fooling only himself. [Hit AC 13]
Bandit 4 re-positions herself, then she and Bandit 2 both fire at Owain. One misses badly [natural 1!] but the other one hits for 8 damage.
Bandit 1 has his hands full with Zeph. He steps back, clearly preferring his bow to the sword at his hip. His shot just misses [AC 16].
Here is your combat map. Note that Bandit 3 is dead or dying. That's why he's in gray. Shooting at him at this point would be strategically questionable. :)

Zeph is content dealing with bandit 1 for now. He takes a five foot step towards the Bandit whom he is fighting. Then Zeph uses his favorite trick: He swings his WarHammer just enough to nick the Bandit's right hand several times. Then when the bandit moves his left hand to protect his right, Zeph moves in with a sideways step and swings hard at the Bandit's exposed left torso, right under the Bandit's elbow.

Kiel winces and grunts in pain as the Half-Orc tears into him, warm blood splattering the dirt road. Kiel sucks up the pain and gets himself back into the fight. He takes a 5 foot hop(to square K-6), slicing the Half-Orc once as he steps, spinning with the Double-Bladed Sword above his head and slicing again as he comes to a halt. Each slice with the blade leaves deep gashes in the Chain-Shirted Half-Orc's chest.

Rollo's mind lost grip on the flow of space and time, and was now standing on the cart starring at the rear of a mule.
He looked around, his wards in peril.
"BIMRIPPLE I BESEECH YOU TO COME TO OUR AID!"
With a Crackle of aetherial energy an electric blue and purple celestrial monkey decends on the bandit leader and with the power of good bites deep into the neck of the human. The foul human now knows why evil fears the bite of Brimripple, lord and champion of the monkey knights of Spirralenn.

How dumb are these bandit to follow an idiotic leader like you. I guess they have a death. drop your weapons and we will let you live." (diplomacy: 120 + 9 = 13)

Kiel edges out of his vulnerable, flanked spot and lays into the half-orc. His two blows drop the mighty bandit, who falls with a look of shock on his face.
Owain sets his sights on the half-orc, but sees Kiel cut him down. He focuses instead on the bandit leader, cutting the man down with a single powerful blow.
Meanwhile, Sebastian tells one of the archers a funny joke. Unfortunately, the woman doesn't see the humor [Will save 19].
Rollo summons a celestial monkey to attack the bandit leader. The leader, however, has already fallen to Owain's sword. Bimripple instead goes for Bandit 2, biting her ankle with celestial ferocity.
Not to be outdone, Selemar summons a wolf to take a bite out of Bandit 4.
Hmark fires at one of the bandits, but misses.
Axara wants to target the leader, but he has already been dropped. Instead, she sends her Magic Missiles flying toward Bandit 2.

It's raining agin.
Zeph Human Rogue 25/25 d20+9=13 ; Tuesday July 8th, 2008 12:58:42 AM
Zeph looks down at the woman with pity as she falls from Axara's missile attacks.
"Do you guys think we could get any useful information from one of them if they are not dead yet?" Zeph says, looking at Rollo, knowing that he may be able to bring one back to consciousness.
"If not then we should take what we can from them, travel a little bit more so that we can put some distance between us and the bodies. Then we should make camp quickly and hidden. I don't want any bandit friends seeking revenge while we sleep." Zeph says to the group.
Zeph then begins searching the remains of the bandits, starting with the woman, then the bandit he slew himself and then to the leader, the half-orc, and the other two. He motions for Axara to follow him with her everburning torch to help provide some extra illumination in the cloudy atmosphere.
He makes particular note of the cleaves and gashes in the Half-Orc and in the leader, knowing whose handy work that must have been.
"Sir Owain and Good Rollo, I do not know the duties you may have to the diseased. But a proper burial may be a bit of a stretch for us considering the wounds you two warriors seem to have received. Also, perhaps someone should help me search these bodies." Zeph says to Owain on his horse and Rollo as he rummages through the pockets and feels for any hidden treasures of the bandits.

Kiel pulls his bowstring back only to see the poor woman fall to the ground. He un-notches his arrow and places it back in his quiver.
He looks at the poor individuals that the group just slain and feels a bit of pity for them. Then he looks up at the rain, quietly.
Kiel follows Zeph and assist him in searching the bodies, knowing that bandits often hide goods. "I doubt that Owain will approve of looting the dead, but the truth is that these guys will never need this stuff, and our need is great." Kiel says lightly to Zeph as they do their rounds.
He looks at the tracks of the bandits, wondering where they could have came from, if there was a bandit camp or not. Then he searches the immediate area for anything else of interest, including dry wood to put on the cart for later.
Then Kiel feels sharp pains in his abdomen and arms, the adrenalin leaving his system, and his clotted blood mixing with the rain and running to the ground. "Indeed, we should rest soon. I will take the... first watch... so that I may get a full nights rest." Kiel says, his eye darting briefly to Axara.
When the watch begins, Kiel will start bandaging himself with scraps of cloth and Salves.
Hmark (Alain subbing for Mike) Tuesday July 8th, 2008 9:44:16 AM
Hmark does not even have to unleash his deadly arrow as Axara magic and Owain swords kill the remaining bandits. He puts the arrow back and decides to look for the ones that missed to see if he can recover some of them. After that he will help Zeph into searching the 6 bodies.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 11/18] Tuesday July 8th, 2008 9:53:07 AM
Axara smiles as her magic missiles kill the bandit. "Another group lead to its death because of its leadership. They should have done a better job of sizing us up and realizing they would be biting more than they can chew. Well, at least the road will be slightly more secure. Now gentlemen, if I could ask you for some privacy .. hum .. just do not look my way... thank you ... " Axara goes next to the cart and sits down. She cuts the arrow sticking in her body in half to be abble to lift her robe and cotton camisole. Her slender and muscular legs (and much more) is clearly visible if any in the group is a peeping Tom.
She takes the broken arrow and bites it. Using her dagger, she extract the arrow from herself, using the technique she learned with the previous group she was in. It is quite painful and she bites the arrow so hard she breaks it.
After that, she pulls her clothes down and forces herself to smile. "Does any of you have divine healing skills? I could use some of it."
As Zeph and Hmark search the bodies she tells them "If you find anything that looks magical, can you please let me inspect them. I just have a passion for anything arcane."
Finally when everything is set and done, she looks at Kiel "I guess it is you and me on the first watch." She looks at him, thinking of a friendly gesture that Kiel would not interpret like a come-on or a condesending remark but nothing comes to her mind. She just stand there, with a confused look as rain falls on her, drenching her robe, her hair and her gorgeous face.

"Thank you little one," the paladin says sincerely to the gnome, "I feel a great deal better."
Owain watches as some members of the group search the bodies. While it is true that the paladin holds a certain amount of disdain for the practice, he also realizes the necessity and practicality of such activities at times like this.
"Lady sorceress," the half-orc says, his deep voice a low gravel as he turns to face Axara, "I am far from the healer Rollo is, but if you are in need, I too have some modest divine gifts to heal."
Placing his large hand gently on the beautiful sorceress' head, the huge half-orc says a silent prayer and heals her wounds. (Lay on Hands: 6 points)
DM Kathy Wednesday July 9th, 2008 12:27:42 AM Zeph begins searching the bandits. The first thing he notices is that three of the archers are still alive. The two male archers are in decent shape, but the only female archer still alive clings to life by the thinnest of threads.
Looking at their gear, Zeph notes that the archers had good-quality (i.e., Masterwork) longbows. Their chain shirts are equally good, but their longswords are the ordinary kind that can be purchased in any marketplace. The leader had a very nice chain shirt made of Mithral and a good-quality rapier. His composite longbow is especially hard to pull, and would probably do extra damage for those strong enough to wield it. The half-orc's falchion is of good quality, but his chain shirt and shortbow are ordinary.
Kiel, meanwhile, is looking for the bandits' camp. He soon locates it nearby, and finds a small cache of dry firewood, and a smaller cache of coin and trinkets (total value: 200 gp).
Hmark searches and is able to recover one of his spent arrows.
Axara, showing more grit than some had perhaps credited her with, yanks an arrow out of her own flesh. She also asks about "anything magical", but since nobody has a way of telling whether anything is magical, it's doubtful she'll get any response.
[OOC: Broad hint that somebody ought to pop a Detect Magic :) ]
Then Sebastian heals Kiel, Rollo heals Owain, and Owain heals Axara.
Zeph asks about burying the dead bandits. Kiel is concerned about where the party will pass the night, but it is perhaps a bit early in the day (early afternoon) to worry about that just yet.
Zeph 25/25 d20+3=7 ; d20+4=12 ; Wednesday July 9th, 2008 1:33:49 AM
Zeph collects the items and, with Kiel's help, drags the alive bandits to the wagon.
Zeph then presents the swords, chain shirts, and other weapons to Axara and the group.
"Ahhh, distribution of loot: the party killer. I have seen many a group argue about such things and fall apart. I hope we are not so trivial. The rule I like the most for distribution is 'Need before Greed', I always say. That means whoever can make best use of a particular item should receive it, no? Then what cannot be used can be sold and the money can be divided up. That is my opinion on the matter anyways." Zeph says to the group as he eyes the Rapier and wonders if the Composite Longbow is suited to his moderate strength.
Perhaps Kiel would make best use of the Chain Shirt if he wishes. Although I am sure that Sebastian, Axara or myself could also use it, he seems to be the one most likely to be in combat. I wonder if it is at all magical. Zeph thinks
Then Zeph looks at the bandits that he and Kiel dragged over.
"Well Owain, you said no unnecessary killings. These three are on the brink of death it seems, especially the poor woman. I am a man of only moderate morals, so I trust your judgment on whether or not we should allow them to die... although without the ring-leader they are but little threat... and they seem to be bleeding badly." Zeph says, feeling pity for the bandits, knowing that he may have very well been in their shoes a long time ago.
"I even volunteer to use one of my personal potions on the poor female bandit if all of your and Rollo's healing ability is used up for the day." Zeph says to Owain, staring at the bleeding woman.
Zeph then looks over at Kiel as he walks back and presents his findings. "Two-hundred divided by eight is twenty-five." Zeph says lightly, hoping he doesn't seem like a know-it-all.
(Diplomacy with the group = 7 Knowledge Mathematics check=12) =p
Axara[AC: 17 HP 17/18] Wednesday July 9th, 2008 7:14:19 AM
Axara feels the healing power of Owain curing her and she gives a genuine thanking smile to the Paladin. "Sir Owain you truely are an honor to your order."
After the possessions of the bandits have been brought in, Axara asks the adventurers to stand behind her. Then sheinvokes the magic within her and cast a cone shape ray that will highlight anything of magic nature.
When the fate of the bleeding bandits come up, Axara stays silent. "My moral compass is different than this group as I would have no trouble letting die someone who tried to kill me. But this is not worth a fight. I just hope that they figure out what to do with them if they save them. They will be such an encumbrance....."
Regarding the loot, Axara is straight to the point "I do not want neither armor nor weapon. If nothing is magical, I will take my share in gold of what we sell."
She pockets the 25 gold pieces that she adds to the 50 she receives from Madam Dulcet.
Hmark Wednesday July 9th, 2008 9:04:48 AM
Hmark walks up to the unconscious bandits. Looking uncertainly at Rollo and Owain, he asks, "Is there anything we can do to help?" The archer has no clue what that help might be.
Only after the issue of the wounded is dealt with, the brown haired lad will set about replenishing his spent arrows from the quivers of the bandits [restock back to 40].
Way too new to the group to start asking about shares, Hmark merely waits to hear the other's reaction to Zeph and Axara.
Sebastian [AC:16, hp:14/17]CharSheet d20-1=15 ; Wednesday July 9th, 2008 1:50:53 PM
Looking a little pale as he gazes upon the dying bandits, Sebastian comments ”Well, I would like to think that if I was bleeding to death. Someone would be kind enough to bind a wound or two.” The bard tears a strip of cloth from one of the dead bandit’s clothes and uses it as a bandage. Not very good at it he tries to bandage the female bandit (heal: first aid 15) surprisingly he manages to stop her from getting worse.
when the subject turn to loot, Sebastian speaks up "I've already got a chain shirt like that. I wouldn't mine carrying the rapier it' of better quality than mine, but then I don't plan on using it often."
Kiel Longarm 15/26 AC17 d20+7=27 ; Wednesday July 9th, 2008 3:31:09 PM
(heal check = 27. Nat 20! wow Kiel rolls high)
Kiel begins to bandage up the bandits in much the same manner that Sebastian did, only better.
"I can only use the Mithril Shirt if it is magical, as I have one like it as well. As for the Rapier, it's really none of my business, but Zeph is in melee a bit more than Sebastian is... could flip a coin." Kiel says as he uses cloth to wrap the male bandit's broken ribs and tries to stifle the bleeding in the woman.
Then Kiel grabs the Composite Longbow looted from the leader and pulls the string back to see if it is adjusted to the same strength as his own bow (which is +3str).
"Perhaps Axara could identify any magical items in the cart as we move." Kiel says.
Owain half-orc paladin AC: 18 HP: 23 Wednesday July 9th, 2008 9:41:44 PM
Owain looks thoughtful as he stares at the wounded bandits.
"I agree that we should tend to their wounds and then question them for any information about the road ahead they may have," the half-orc growls. "Then, bind their hands and leave them here. They will free themselves eventually and hopefully, while they are trying to get free, they will think about a new line of work."
DM Kathy Thursday July 10th, 2008 12:28:45 AM
Upon consideration, you decide to show mercy to the wounded bandits. You bind their wounds; they remain unconscious, but stable.
Hmark can easily refill his quiver from those of the bandit archers. In fact, he could probably put together a third quiver for himself, if he wanted.
Axara casts Detect Magic. The leader's Mithral chain shirt and the half-orc's falchion both glow with faint auras. A third aura, coming from the leader's backpack, proves to be an Everburning Torch.
Kiel tests the pull of the leader's bow, and finds it a shade easier than his +3 strength bow.
Owain suggests questioning the bandits, but they would have to be made conscious first. Kiel is still anxious to be on the move--but do you want to hold up long enough to question the bandits?
Kiel Longarm 15/26 AC17 Thursday July 10th, 2008 12:49:38 AM
Kiel hands the Composite Bow to Zeph. "Give it a try." he says, figuring that only either Zeph, Himself, or Owain have the strength necessary to use it.
Kiel then goes to find his horse, Phoenix. He will tend to his horse while the group questions the bandits, not really caring to be a part of such things. Kiel will also accept the magical Mithril Shirt if the group decides he could make best use of it.
I'm sure they can talk the bandits' ears off anyways. Kiel thinks.
(OOC: Sorry if I am not doing a good job roleplaying Kiel in BigTim's absence. I'm trying my best by reading his previous posts and then trying to put myself in Kiel's mindset. I thought Kiel was more of an action-oriented guy rather than a big talker like Zeph is.)
Axara[AC: 17 HP 17/18] Thursday July 10th, 2008 1:16:20 AM
Axara looks at the group "I do know the spell to identify magical object but I need a 100 gp pearl to it. I doubt that using 100 GP would do work. I do have a magical mithril chain myself but if the one from the bandit is better, I would not mind trading it. I need all the defense I can have as I am not that sturdy. The magical falchion could be a good addition to one of the warriors. Andsadly, I already have one of the only magical item we found, the everburning torch. I think that Zeph or Kiel should get it."
She goes back on the cart, ready to move and get away from the rain.
Spell: 0 5/6 1 3/6
OOC: Can GP replace a pearl for identifying? I am not sure. If yes, Axara will identify the two items.
Sebastian [AC:16, hp:14/17]CharSheet Thursday July 10th, 2008 12:12:05 PM
Sebastian looks longingly at the magical mithral shirt and rapier, ”I suppose it would be best for Kiel to have the magical mithral shirt and for Zeph to make use of the magical rapier. Axara, the magic is fain and probably no better than what you have. Perhaps Kiel can give Hmark his old mithral shirt too? As for the strength bow who ever can use it. Owain, since the Falchion is a two-handed weapon and you are the only one using one do you want to use it? The rest we can throw into the cart. I’ve got extra sacks.” The bard will load what's not taken in sacks and onto the the cart.
Zeph Human Rogue 25/25 AC 17 Thursday July 10th, 2008 2:09:38 PM
Zeph takes the bow from Kiel and pulls it back to see if it matches is moderate strength.
"Well, I would hate to be greedy as it is really not in my nature. But I suppose if I am the person who can make best use of the Rapier, the Bow and the Torch, then that is how it is. Who knows, maybe we will find a magical crossbow next, right?" Zeph says, winking at Sebastian.
Zeph then leans in to Sebastian and whispers, "If you want my share of the gold to make up for this, you can have it. Or we could flip a coin... I call heads."
"Anyways, lets get one of these misguided fools conscious so that we could question them." Zeph says looking at Rollo or Selemar.
(OOC: Isn't it funny how out of 5 humans in this party, that ALL of us use Mithril Chain Shirts?? I hope the DMKathy realizes this.)
Hmark Thursday July 10th, 2008 3:43:15 PM Can never have too many arrows, Hmark thinks to himself as he gathers up a third quiver full and stuff it into his backpack.
The archer's face lights up when Sebastian mentions maybe Kiel could provide a hand-me-down Mithril Chain Shirt. "That'd be great!" he replies enthusiastically. "I can throw my old one into the pile to sell off."
[OOC - MW Chain Shirt]
Owain half-orc paladin AC: 18 HP: 23 Thursday July 10th, 2008 6:21:43 PM
The huge half-orc shakes his head.
"My thanks," he says, holding up his hand, "but I have no need for that. I have spent my entire adult life training with the great sword. It is almost a part of me. In fact, my great sword was consecrated on an alter to the Forces of Good during a two day prayer and fast when I became a paladin."
Owain returns his freshly clean weapon to its' scabbard and then crosses his muscular arms across his barrel chest.
"The booty means little to me, beyond it's ability to aid us on our mission."
DM Kathy Friday July 11th, 2008 12:48:41 AM Hmark puts together another quiver and puts it in his backpack.
Axara offers to identify the magic items, but expresses doubts whether it will be worth the expense. [OOC: you do need an actual pearl for the spell]
With some educated guesswork, you figure you have a +1 Mithral chain shirt and a +1 falchion. The composite longbow seems to have a +2 strength pull [minimum strength of 14 to use].
Owain is not interested in the booty, and Axara finds little to interest her in magical arms and armor. The others discuss how best to dispose of everything. Sebastian bundles up everything that isn't of immediate interest and places it in the cart.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 17/18] Friday July 11th, 2008 7:14:52 AM
Axara nods at Sebastian "You are probably right Sebastian. This Mithral chain mail has likely the same amount of protective magic as mine. giving it to Kile and given the non magical mithral to Hmark is probably best for the party. Let's sell what we do not need, including the magical falchion back we are in town."
Sitting on the cart, she questions the men "Are we all ready to proceed and go to the monastery ruins?"
She stays there, rubbing every so often the spot where she was hit by the arrow, waiting for the group to start moving again.
Sebastian [AC:16, hp:14/17]CharSheet Friday July 11th, 2008 10:17:04 AM
Sebastian brights up at Zeph's comment, "Yea, maybe we will find a magical crossbow or bolts. Or, maybe a magical musical interment! No keep our coin and use the items in good health."
Getting into the cart Sebastian comments, "I don't see any reason to waste healing spells or potions on the bandits to question them espicaly when we still have wounds ourselves. Yes Axara, we can sell the stuff when we get back, plus wherever else we find after we bet back."
Kiel Longarm 15/26 AC18 Friday July 11th, 2008 4:40:16 PM
After Kiel finds his horse, he will begin to take off his current Mithril Shirt and hand it to Hmark. Then he will clean and equip the Mithril Shirt+1.
(OOC: I don't have the ability to edit Kiel's character sheet, but his AC is 18 now)
"If you don't want to question them, then lets go." Kiel says to the group after donning his new armor.
Kiel then begins to mount Phoenix and grunts as he throws his leg over, still obviously wounded.
Hmark Friday July 11th, 2008 4:58:26 PM
Hmark grins as he takes the mithril shirt from Kiel. "Nice," he remarks as he feels the fine mesh.
The lad quickly sloughs off his chain shirt and puts the new one on. He tosses his MW Chain Shirt into the cart with the rest of the loot.
Then he mounts up on Stardancer, and drops to the rear of the column, whistling a happy tune.
Zeph 25/25 d20+2=8 ; d20+2=12 ; d20+9=20 ; Friday July 11th, 2008 5:03:16 PM "Thanks Sebastian, you are a true team player." Zeph says to the honest Bard.
Zeph then removes his current Rapier from his belt and replaces it with the Bandit Leader's Masterwork Rapier. Then he removes his bow from his back and replaces it with the Composite Bow +2str. Zeph walks to the cart and places his old Rapier and Longbow with the others, figuring it is better to go towards group loot.
"Well, I suppose if no one wants to question the bandits, then we should tie them up and leave them on the road, eh?" Zeph says as he pulls out some hempen rope.
Zeph then gathers up the remaining arrows from all the bandits that Hmark did not take and puts them in the wagon with the rest of the mundane weapons and armors.
Finally, Zeph looks for his aging horse, Shadow.

Owain half-orc paladin AC: 18 HP: 23 Friday July 11th, 2008 10:35:10 PM
Owain scans the immediate area. Once satisfied that things are in some amount of order, given the recent ambush and resulting battle, he leaps easily onto his warhorse and settles into the military saddle.
"I agree," the half-orc says simply, his deep and raspy voice projecting through the sounds of the rain, "let us be done with these bandits and be on our way. We have important business that we must not be distracted from."
The paladin grabs the reigns of his horse, anxious to be moving out.
DM Kathy Sunday July 13th, 2008 11:09:36 PM
You finish dividing the loot and are soon on your way. You decide to leave the living bandits tied up beside the road, to re-think their career choice when they wake up and free themselves.
You travel for a few more hours, continuing to follow the road toward Rowena. It rains off and on all afternoon--short showers that are soon spent. As the afternoon winds to a close, you find yourselves approaching a small village. When you arrive there, you see that it is at a crossroads, where the Rowena road intersects a lesser road (more of a cow-path, really) heading north and south. Consulting your map, you see that you will need to head north on this secondary road to reach the monastery.
You also see immediately that this town has an inn, located right on the crossroads. It is a simply country place, but it will have warm fires, hot food, and dry beds.
Of course, it may also have people who wonder what a group of adventurers is doing in these parts.
Selemar Monday July 14th, 2008 8:56:19 AM
Selemar fiddles about a bit with one of the long bows.
"If no one objects, I'd like one of these."
OOC Thanks Adam for subbing
Axara[AC: 17 HP 17/18] Monday July 14th, 2008 9:54:36 AM
Axara looks at the smoke coming from the inn chimney and she smiles. "A roof! A warm bed! A warm bad! Privacy of a room. This is such a nice welcome change after all this rain. Being able to sleep to recharge my magic! Take a long bath and let the water purify me! This would be really exquisite!"
"Gentlemen, after the dreary weather we have had on the road and the fight, I would welcome a nice night of rest in an inn." She pauses and looks at Kiel ahead. "However, if the group rather camps in the rain and mud, I will follow the majority."

Holding his cloak tight to ward off the rain, Sebastian wonders if the three bandits will re-think their career or not. Perhaps some monster will make a snack of them, but then there are the other dead bodies left lying around.
As Selemar fiddles with one of bows from the loot, Sebastian shrugs "I don't think the others mind. Do you need arrows to go with them too?"Party Loot List:
As the Inn comes into sight, Sebastian's eye's light up, "An Inn! A dry bed and a hot meal!"
Zeph 25/25 Monday July 14th, 2008 2:55:47 PM
(OOC: what about the mundane Longbow and Rapier that I donated to the group loot when I replaced the ones I had with the new ones? Remember, I put them in the cart with the rest of them. Shouldn't I get credit for those? A longbow is 75 and a Rapier is 20 if I remember correctly. Thanks for keeping track of loot list Sebastian.)
Zeph looks at the inn and wonders exactly how secure the book and the group will be in such a place.
Well, I doubt my group members will vote to sleep in the rain anyways, might as well go for it. Zeph thinks
"Well, even though we are staying at an inn, I still think that we should keep at least one person on watch at all times. I fear thieves in the night may strike." Zeph says to the group.
"Also, does anyone have an idea as to what we should say to anyone who asks why a group such as ourselves are in this town? I think we should just say we are passing through... or something." Zeph says.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 17/18] Monday July 14th, 2008 4:11:26 PM "Good question Zeph. Assuming we sleep at the inn, we could simply say we are looking for employment to pick up some rumors. Or simply that as adventurers, we are attracted to ruins. Or just saying it is a stop on the way to Rowena. Keep it simple and dumb."
"They probably all added "like you Axara" at the end of my sentence."
Hmark Monday July 14th, 2008 4:45:28 PM
Hmark nods, perhaps a bit too eagerly, in agreement with Axara's suggestion.
"We're just passing through on the way to Rowena," he agrees. And then adds, "and anything beyond that is really none of their business."
DM Kathy Tuesday July 15th, 2008 12:33:05 AM Selemar, upon consideration, decides to take one of the bandits' longbows, trading it for his own.
You consider the security risks, but the lure of those dry beds proves to be irresistable. You head for the inn. Your cover story will be that you are just passing through, and are in no way associated with a book of supreme evil.
The wooden sign out front displays a rooster, in green paint. It doesn't actually say "The Green Rooster," but it's a pretty good indication of the name all the same. As you pull up, the stable-lad runs out to take your horses. Make that stable-lass; on second glance, you see that the barefoot, tousle-headed, merry-faced person is female. "Staying the night, gentles?" she asks, giving Shadow an absent pat. "Go on in, then; I'll look after 'em good. D'you need anything out of the wagon?"
Inside, you find a smallish common-room with low beams and simple wooden tables and benches. A fire glows on the hearth, keeping the place snug. The room is rather crowded just at present, and a tantalizing aroma wafts through the air. Looking around, you see that most of the people in the common-room are dressed as farmers and laborers--likely locals, enjoying a bit of supper after a hard day of spring planting.
You find seats and serving-girl soon appears with a fresh loaf and a crock of butter. Her hair is smooth and her manner rather lady-like, but she still bears a strong family resemblance to the stable-lass. "Dinner all around, is it?" she asks with a smile. "Ale to drink, or do any of you fancy wine?"
You inquire about rooms, and she gives you another smile. "You'll need to speak to Mum about rooms, but I know we've some available. I'll let her know." With that, she whisks off into the kitchen.
Being traveled adventurers, you have stayed at fancy inns where they have a menu of items to choose from for dinner. You also know that simple country places like this one don't generally offer such luxuries. They cook a dinner, and you either want some or you don't. Tonight's dinner is a lamb stew, served with ale or wine, for 5 copper. Those of you who try it find it a little skimpy on actual lamb. However, it is very flavorful, with a hearty broth and plenty of vegetables.
Presently "Mum" arrives at your table; a plump, round-faced, middle aged woman wrapped in a voluminous apron. "I understand you want to stay the night," she says pleasantly. "Rooms sleep one or two, and are three silver per night. We have six available; let me know how many you need."
Axara[AC: 17 HP 17/18] Tuesday July 15th, 2008 11:28:34 AM
Axara enjoys the warm meal, taking the flavor of the various roots and vegetables to accompany the few pieces of lambs.
After dinner, she says to the innkeeper "I will take a single room. Also, could it be possible to have a bath drawn to my room?"
She goes to the room and once the girls have brought in the hot water for her bath, Axara takes off her used traveling robe, her armor and her cotton gown. She grabs a lavender soap from her backpack and slowly goes down the water.
She immerses herself, letting the water takes away the stress and tension from the day. After soaping herself, she takes a piece of cloth, wet it and put it on her eyes.
She stays in the bath, thinking about the past events, enjoying the relaxation she needs.
"This feels so good. Adventuring is now the glamorous profession people make it to be..... I hope that the arrow will not leave a scar. At that rate, I will quickly become a scary woman...... I wonder why they are no man working at the inn ...... Rollo has been quite silent lately ...... probably lost in the maze of his mind ...... that Hmark kid is quite cute ...... I wonder what he would think of me if I ever told him I was a farm girl ..... well I would have to talk to him first ..... boy ..... this bath feel SO good ......"
Once the bath starts getting cold, she gets up, dry herself and put back her cotton gown on. She will put in front of the door a chair or a desk or anything in the room that would make noise if someone was coming in uninvited.
"Time for a good night of sleep to heal and recharge my magic"
Hmark Tuesday July 15th, 2008 2:45:41 PM
Hmark turns Stardancer over to the stable-lass with a quick "Thanks", and heads for the smell of food.
His face brightens as he enters the tavern. "This place smells just like the Shadfly back home," he declares. The archer has no difficulty sliding into a place, and diving into the stew.
As the subject of rooms is broached, he takes a quick look at Axara, and then chuckles to himself at an internal thought. Turning to Kiel, he asks, "you wanna share one?"

Kiel notices Hmark look at Axara and smirks a little as he shrugs the thought off. He sits quietly and eats his stew as the group discusses whatever they discuss.
Kiel then addresses Hmark when he asks the question. "Sure thing. You know I will most likely take a few precautions with the windows and doors before I decide to sleep. I will also help secure the room that Owain is staying in... if that is ok with you and whomever you are staying with." Kiel says, the last bit directed at Owain in a whisper.
"Rollo, could you possibly help me recover a bit before you decide to retire for the night?" Kiel asks of the good Gnome
Kiel pays "Mum" and walks up to his room and begins securing the area as best he can, with a chair propped up against the door and the window sealed tight. He then does a quick survey of the area outside his window to spot anything of interest and to take in his surroundings.
Kiel places his armor and his weapons next to him and puts a dagger under his pillow, just in case. He also begins to bandage himself if Rollo did not assist him with a spell or two before hitting the hay.

Zeph takes in the surroundings as best he can, making note of all possible exits and entrances and he triest to get an estimate of the distance to the next closest building. He will also look around and try to read the signs from all the other buildings he can see.
When the group sits down to eat, he gladly accepts the stew. While the group is eating, he decides to ask a few questions. "So, where do you guys think we could find a shop to sell some of these items off of the cart that we don't need? Perhaps we should ask "Mum"? Zeph says to the group in a hushed whisper, trying to see if anyone suspicious could be trying to hear what he is saying.
When "Mum" shows up, Zeph asks the question: "Is there any shop in town where we could make a few purchases... normal stuff, rope, a lantern, and maybe a hunting bow?" Zeph asks, trying to keep the idea of magical items out of the conversation.
When Axara mentions going to bed and Kiel mentions securing his room before sleeping, Zeph pipes up again in a whisper "Good idea Kiel, I will assist you as well. I know a thing or two about rigging a trap. I think that I should bunk with Owain too, for safety." Zeph says
When the group breaks, Zeph will venture to each room of the companions, asking if they want him to jam the locks on the doors so that no one could enter. He then jams the window to his and Owain's room (if Owain agrees) and the door. Before Zeph goes to sleep, he puts a dagger under his pillow and the rest of his equipment beside his bed.
DM KATHYHighlight to display spoiler: {Zeph will appear to be rummaging through his backpack as he kneels by his bed before he goes to sleep. Owain, could you help with these sacks?” the bard hand him one of the sacks with the masterwork armor and weapons. ”The stuff shouldn’t stay in the damp air.”
Once inside, Sebastian sniffs the tavern air of home cooked food and ale, ”Ah, pity we will only be staying one night. The lamb stew is hearty. Sir Owain, I’ll bunk with you, if you don’t mind”
While sipping his after diner ale, Sebastian will give the flute playing another try (perform: wind inst: 18) He does a bit better than his average, but nothing to write home about. If Mum allows, he’ll keep playing until it time to for the group to turn in.
Selemar Tuesday July 15th, 2008 7:08:18 PM
Selemar didn't have any objection to a night under the trees, rain or no, but an inn works just as well.
Simple and dumb. Hmm, just like...never mind. That's not kind
He enjoys a bit of stew, and keeps his eyes open.
"Rollo, it looks like we will be sharing a room. My apologies if it smells a bit like wet fur."
"I hope the rest of you don't mind if I turn in early. I'll be back down in a few hours. Should you need me for anything, don't hesitate to call."
He heads outside for a few minutes, then returns with the wolf, and both to their room, trying not to attract too much attention. Once inside, he towels off the wolf, muttering about the way wolf hair smells much worse than human, gnome, or half-0rc hair when wet, to say nothing of elf hair. A short while later, he is in a trance.
Owain half-orc paladin AC: 18 HP: 23 Tuesday July 15th, 2008 9:24:57 PM
Owain scans the inhabitants of the village as they ride down the street toward the Inn. If the huge half-orc notices the veiled looks his harsh appearance illicits, he does not show it. Instead, he rides silently and proudly as the group moves through the dirty streets.
"Thank you," Owain says with a small bow to the stable-lass, his voice a deep rumble. "Please take care around my war horse. He is very well trained, but he is very strong and can be a bit difficult to handle if he puts his mind to it."
The paladin assists in any way he can as the group unpacks and goes inside, making sure that he straps the backpack containing the Codex securely on his shoulders.
Once seated, Owain eats heartily of the stew although he only sips at his ale. As he eats, he silently scans the room in search of anything, or anyone, out of the ordinary.
"I would be please to bunk with either of you," Owain says with a nod to both Sebastian and Zeph. "I would recommend that at least one warrior be in each room ... just in case."
The massive half-orc takes a large bite of bread and then snorts.
"I must admit, my greatest fear for this evening is that, as has been my experience with most inns, the bed is going to me much too small for me. It is always a special pleasure to sleep with the bottom half of my legs sticking off the bottom end of the bed."
DM Kathy d8+3=4 ; d8+3=11 ; Wednesday July 16th, 2008 12:40:38 AM Axara, predictably enough, wants a room of her own. And a bath. The inkeeper, "Mum," tells her that a bath can be arranged, for 5 copper, but she'll need to take it in the wash-room belowstairs.
Assuming she agrees, Axara is led after dinner to a small, stone-floored room kept warm by a roaring fire. There, a girl of about 11--who looks a good bit like her sister the stable-lass--is pouring hot water into smallish wooden tub. You suspect that it doubles as a wash-tub come laundry day, but it is clean and the warm water looks inviting. You luxuriate in the bath for a good while, then dry off with the inn's towels. "Mind you dry yourself good, Miss," the girl says with an air of grave importance, "or you'll catch your death of cold."
Kiel decides to care for Phoenix himself, and follows the lass to the stables. "Particular, is he?" she asks with a grin, expertly taking off Stardancer's saddle. "Please yourself, then, sir, though I must say I'm pretty good with animals." She soon proves that to be no idle boast, as she quickly moves all the other horses, and the donkey, into their stalls, removes their tack, and feeds and waters them. She is still currying them, whistling as she does so, when Kiel finishes with Phoenix and moves to the inn.
On his way there, he takes a look around, but sees nothing untoward.
Zeph, too, takes a look around as he enters the inn. The village is very small--too small, ordinarily, to boast an inn like the Green Rooster. It is a safe assumption that, being on the crossroads, they see more travelers than a normal village its size. Zeph sees no stores, or indeed any public buildings other than this one. When he asks the innkeeper, she confirms this; there are no stores in town. "You might could find somebody with some rope to spare," she says thoughtfully. "But nothing like a bow. And lanterns'll be wanted just now. It's spring planting, y'see, and most folks have to do their daily chores by lantern-light."
Hmark feels rather at home in the humble establishment. He and Kiel decide to share a room.
Selemar would be just as comfortable outdoors, but he bows to the party's wishes and opts to share a room with Rollo. He sneaks Longo in when nobody is looking.
Sebastian tries his hand at entertaining the crowd. To his own ears, his performance sounds very run-of-the-mill. But to these country folk, who don't see many entertainers at all, it's a grand concert. They applaud enthusiastially, and call for more. "Look at this!" the serving girl cries when she comes to clear away. "A bard playing in our inn, just like in those fancy city places! No," she says when Sebastian moves to pay for his meal, "put your money away if you please, Master Bard, and play us another tune instead!" And indeed, Sebastian does not pay for his meal or his drinks that evening (though he is still charged for his room).
Owain scans the room for anyone out of the ordinary, but the crowd is what it seemed to be at first glance, hard-working country folk come for a few hours of food and fellowship after a hard day in the fields.
There is some confusion about choosing roommates, as both Sebastian and Zeph opt to room with Owain. The paladin may privately wish to have a room to himself, so he can place the beds end-to-end and sleep more comfortably. Eventually, however, he ends up in a room with Sebastian, leaving Zeph on his own.
[OOC: unless somebody changes his mind. :) ]
Before you turn in, Rollo cures Kiel for 15 points.
The inn rooms are small, simple, and very clean. When you go up, the little 11-year-old is moving down the hall with a covered basket that looks heavy. "Heated bricks," she explains, "wrapped in flannel for a snug bed. Also," she adds practically, "because we don't get many travelers in the low season and honestly, those beds ain't been aired for a while. But don't tell Mum I told you."
The hot bricks do indeed chase away the cold and any lingering damp. The inn and the little town are very quiet, and you have a restful night. Your healthy sleep eases the last few hurts from your bandit encounter. [Everyone heals 3 hp overnight]
When you go down the next morning, the common room is quiet. The inn doesn't appear to serve breakfast, except to overnight guests. The inkeeper, yawning a bit, is just setting it out on the largest table in the common-room. There is fresh bread, still warm from the oven, and fresh milk, still warm from the cow. There is soft cheese in a wooden bowl, and a knife to spread it with. There is a porridge, hot in a cast-iron kettle, and a few slices of ham.
Outside, the rain has stopped and a brisk wind is sending little clouds skittering across the sky.

Also, I have completed "your" map of the monastery. This is the map you have been carrying with you. You can now see it and discuss it.
As a reminder, you know that this map was created by the Swords of Light, an adventuring group, when they went to the monastery in pursuit of a missing envoy. The notes accompanying the map seem to pertain to which areas the group investigated, and which remain unexplored.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 17/18] Wednesday July 16th, 2008 7:15:46 AM
Although she is sitting into a laundry washtub, Axara feels like she is in a gold royal bathtub. After her wash, she drops a couple of copper pieces to the girl as a tip.
when the same girl brings in the heated bricks she gives her another couple of copper pieces as tips.
When she wakes up, she feels fully healed and looks at where the arrow entered her flesh and sees a small faint scar. "I was afraid it would leave a mark ....."
She goes down for breakfast and eats in silence with the group. Once no one is paying attention to the group she whispers. "I propose that we visit the building which have already been visited first. It is likely that there will be little or no danger in them. The group that went there was not looking for what we are looking so we could be lucky and find it there. If we do not find it, we can start exploring the other building, from the strudiest to finish by the ones that look ready to fall down."
OOC: Axara has spend 4 SP and 4CP in total (sheet adjusted)
Selemar Wednesday July 16th, 2008 7:24:56 AM
Selemar is probably the first one down. Before dawn, he takes Lango out for a run, then returns him to the stable, where he hopefully will stay out of trouble.
He'll head back inside and wait for the rest to come down.
"Axara, we might be better off looking around for danger first, before it can find us. Of course, if you're right, and it's in a safe place, we would be better off starting there. I'm inclined to agree with you, though we should consider doing the opposite if we wish to be cautious. We've been fortunate so far that no one has been seriously hurt our killed. I'd rather not trust to luck forever."
Sebastian [AC:16, hp:14/17]CharSheetParty Loot List: Wednesday July 16th, 2008 11:17:07 AM
Having enjoyed playing for the appreciative crowed the night before, Sebastian awakes feeling refreshed and fully healed. He looks over to the sleeping paladin still snoring, ”Hay wake up! The sun is up and I hear the others moving about.”
Sebastian joins the others down stairs where they are breaking their night time fast and looking at the map. ”Since we will probable be there for a bit, we should check out one of the buildings in better condition to use as a base, before we start exploring the unexplored.”
Hmark Wednesday July 16th, 2008 3:52:11 PM
Hmark observes Kiel and Sebastian go through their various security features with a look of doubt. These folks are awful jumpy, but he supposes they've got their reasons. He sets his bow nearby for the night, just in case.
Feeling more comfortable than he has in a long time, the brown haired human drops into a deep sleep. Rising with the dawn as is his habit, Hmark is forced to wait for someone to deal with the jammed lock on his door.
Sliding into a spot for breakfast, the lad loads himself down with as much as he can get. "Most important meal of the day," he comments to no one in particular.
Listening the discussion around plans, the archer doesn't join in other than adding an offhand "Yeah" to Sebastian's recommendation.
Zeph 25/25 Wednesday July 16th, 2008 6:33:09 PM
(only because I am alone in a room) DM Kathy Highlight to display spoiler: {Zeph wakes up with a start when he hears movement in the next room, sweat beads on his forehead, as he had another nightmare about fire and blood being spilt. He looks down at his hand and finds his pillow-dagger in his hand, almost as if he were going to stab someone. Zeph looks for a lavatory to wash his face before going downstairs. }
Zeph listens to the three suggestions so far, all of which seem like good ideas. He eats his breakfast and reads his book that Lady Dulcet gave him at the same time like a kid reading the back of a cereal box.
"Yeah. It would be a good idea to establish a base for sure. A place where we can rest to regain spells and heal our wounds. Maybe building 4, 7, or 10 you would think? Or maybe the dormitory-like structure?" Zeph puts in after Sebastian says his part.
"As for whether we should explore the already-explored areas first and search for the book in order to avoid any unnecessary trouble or whether we should wipe out any danger first... (here Zeph pauses and thinks for a moment) ... I think our presence would arouse any trouble-makers and I fear an ambush as we search the pre-explored areas. Therefore I vote we hunt for any monsters or bandits before exploring the safer areas." Zeph says, with a little bit of hesitance, understanding the wisdom behind Axara's words even as he disagrees with them.
