The party feels better about putting some space between themselves and the kidnappers. As the adrenaline drains away, weariness sets in. Stretched and bruised muscles ache, and field dressed wounds weep under meager bandages.
Caelnin suggests the party make camp, while Beren scouts a safe spot. Jet and Alexi ensure it is defendable. Many follow Fatine's example, and after the briefest of ministrations to the animals, crawl into bedrolls and under blankets, though not before receiving a brief check up from Mikal.
Brief watches are set, and Pliny takes a turn, though Lollena does not.
Those who do not need as much sleep as others wake early and pay their respects to their deities.
*********
The morning promises to be a good day for traveling. Cool and clear, means the road will be firm under foot and hoof and animals and riders will remain comfortable under coat or cloak though recently crusted over wounds and sore muscles mean every bump and jostle will be felt.
(OOC: Usual healing for night of rest-1 HP per character level)
*********
Late morning the party turns a bend in the road, and spies the area where the caravan had spent the previous two nights. The wagons are gone, with the exception of three that appear intact, but abandoned. The horses used to pull the wagons are tethered nearby, grazing peacefully on the new grass. Someone has left a metal tub filled with water, for the beasts to drink.

Keela Thursday June 26th, 2008 1:17:13 AM
From behind one of the wagons come the clear, ringing tones of a small child trying to be quiet. "But, Auntie Keelie, why do we have to--"
Then comes the murmur of a woman's voice, shushing the child, saying something too quietly to hear.
A moment later, a young woman comes out from behind the wagon. She looks to be in her twenties, with dark hair, brown eyes, and fair skin. Her blue dress is plain but well-made. She carries a loaded crossbow, and looks as if she knows how to use it. Sort of.
She relaxes visibly when she sees the banner carried by Jet. "Alemi's love, but you gave me a fright!" she exclaims, putting a hand to her heart. "I heard riders approaching, and I thought...well--" She glances down at the crossbow, with some embarrassment on her face.

Caelnin wanders over to the three wagons and notices the woman and her crossbow. Caelnin clumsily dismounts from Huethira to meet the person that he doesn't remember seeing in the crowd.
"Greetings." Caelnin says with a smile "I'm Caelnin, a weapon crafter, a ranged weapon enthusiast. It looks as though everyone has left already. Why have you been left behind? Also, would you know if they took my beloved, gentle Vilria and wagon full of important stuff has gone? Hopefully one of the other group has taken her in when I was away..."
He then stares at the crossbow in the lady's hands and looks slightly disapproving at the sight. Caelnin then thinks She has almost got the grip right for total stability. She doesn't look like the type for holding a cross-bow... What is she here for?
"Sorry about my staring, where was I... Oh, asking questions! ummm... If you don't mind me asking, why are you going to Bryn Baraz?"

The wild looking barbarian, with his spikes and scars, rides into view upon his steppe pony. A wicked looking barbed lance resting nonchalantly across his lap, Anrete gave the crossbow wielding woman a strange look before scanning around at the campsite.
Saying nothing, Anrete continues to glare at the human with his jaundiced eyes. It is obvious that the feral warrior is favoring his left shoulder as a bloodstained bandage is clearly visible from the rend in his vest.

OOC: updated hpts to 11 from 9.
Upon waking up, Alexi remembers the days in the Fist when he had a sergeant proding him with a spear to get up after a long march and very little rest. He also remembers the days of freedom when he slept real late. Ahhh, that was just a week ago!
Tending to Lobo, he is grateful that he took the brunt of Wido's axe and not his good pal Lobo. Brushing hiim good and making sure there were no burs to give problems with the saddle, he gets Lobo ready, then helps clean camp and douse the fire.
As they head out again, he takes some rations from his backpack and munches while traveling. His sore muscles complain loudly at first but after a few miles in the saddle they loosen up some. After the tension from the day before, this trip seems rather surreal. An occasional glance at Lollena, then Pliny, and then his bloodstained armor, confirms the reality.
His is rather caught by surprise when they come upon the previous day's campsite. It seemed like it should have been much further. But the abandoned wagons are puzzling. The mystery doesn't seem to solve istself even as a lady comes out ready for trouble. Are the wagons broken? 'Oh, boy. I was really looking forward to reaching the caravan today. Doesn't look like we may not,' he sighs to himself.
Alexi stays back some 30feet and surveys the scene, keeping a sharp eye out for trouble, taking in the wagons and their location. Are they random, or clumped together? Look worn and beaten or servicable?

Riding alongside the men, Fatine gives a start when the woman appears, aiming a crossbow to and fro. She puts a hand out and whispers a word to her dogs, keeping them back, and reins in her horse. Raising her arm, she beckons for her raven.

The party approaches the abandoned wagons cautiously, and are greeted by a young woman wielding a crossbow. She is on the tall side, with dark hair, brown eyes, and fair skin. A child of about 8 clings to her skirts, and refers to her as "auntie." Seeing the familiar banner of Stonehelm, Keela lowers her defences, relief and embarrassment on her face.
Jet greets the woman, and makes enquiries as to why the wagons aren't with the caravan.
Alexi, Beren, and Anrete evaluate the wagons and environs. The vehicles are intact, and appear to be in good working order. The evidence points to them not having been moved since the caravan first made camp. Beren figures the caravan set out at the usual morning time, and might be half-way into their daily trek. If the party continued on horseback, they could catch up before nightfall.
Fatine's animals surround her protectively, though after a brief whisper, the raven takes flight. Flying high, the black bird starts to circumnavigate the abandoned camp site.
Anrete doesn't recognize the woman as being from the group of wagons the party has been guarding. She must be from one of the other sections. He doesn't remember noticing her before, but there are almost 200 individuals making up the group heading for Bryn Baraz.
While mentally critiquing the woman's technique, Caelnin bombards' the woman with questions.
Mikal is the first to approach the wagons. The dark haired cleric of Alemi offers a special treat to the child, who takes it, and pops it in her mouth.
"Auntie Keelie?" the child says in her lilting voice, "are you going to tell them what the Big Man said?" "Are you going to tell them 'bout how mum and dad and Cole and Nila, and farmer Eggers and his family were took sick, and how the Big Man told us to stay here and not come after the other wagons 'til everyone was better?"

Keela gives a bashful nod in response to Jet's greeting. "Oh, please, Master Stormway; I'm no 'milady.' I'm just Keela. Keela Larch."
"Master Caelnin," she says with a nod when he introduces himself. "I'm afraid I don't know anyone named Vilrea. The rest of the wagon train moved on, though; I'm sure she was among them."
A young boy [Teigan is a boy not a girl; sorry I didn't make that clear :) ] steps out from behind the wagon and regards the group solemnly from a safe position near his aunt's skirts. When Mikal offers a sweet, he hesitates a moment, then accepts.
"And what do we say?" his aunt prompts.
"Thank you, sir," the lad replies around a mouthful of goodie.
Teigan explains what is happening by asking his aunt to explain what is happening. Keela smiles at him. "Well, I'd tell them all that, except you seem to have done a pretty good job all by yourself. But I think you're old enough to remember Master Turnbuckle's name and use it properly." She turns to the group. "That's basically it," she says. "Master Turnbuckle asked us to stay behind because there was illness and he didn't want it to spread. We're to catch up when everyone's hale again."

Alexi (AC: 17, HP:11/25) Lobo (AC: 14, HP:37/37) Friday June 27th, 2008 10:38:30 PM
Satisfied that a satisfactory explanation is given, Alexi relaxes a little. However, because of the sickness, it didn't bode well for them to reach the caravan for another day at least, the way he figured it. With their speed now slowed by the three wagons to the same speed of the caravan, who knows when they'll catch up?
Alexi sighs.
"Don't worry about Vilria, Caelnin," Alexi encourages the sharpshooter. "Cairn will take care of her well, as well as the rest of our stuff."
Moving forward as to be clearly visible, Alexi hides the dented and bloodied Fist breast plate with his shiny shield with the wolf emblem. He doesn't want to get the lady to worrying any more than necessary.
"Lady Keela, I am Alexi, Security." He surveys the scene looking important. "I see three wagons. The young lad mentioned his parents and a farmer. I presume the third is yours, and you know how to handle a team of horses. I imagine the others are not up to handling their wagons, but can they be moved at all?"
The words of Magda, the recuiter back in Floating City, suddenly came back to haunt him, Would you be able to handle a wagon and team?
On the bright side of things, sitting in the seat of a wagon would be slightly more comfortable than in the saddle. "I volunteer to take a wagon, if Mikal deems they are well enough to travel."

"Oh Please Keela, I'm no Master, just a hired hand like most everyone else." he winks at the young man by her side.
Jet smiles at his group of friends and their various responses. "If there is a sickness here, then there is a chance we will all get it if we stay with the group we have found. I will not leave them here though unattended, so, if any of you want to catch up to the train to avoid getting sick, then I understand, if you stay, just know there is a chance."
Jet looks to Pliney and Lollena as well, "You two can head on as well. No reason for her to be out in the cold another night without her own bed sheets."
"As for the sick, if we can keep moving we will, but if Mikal says they can't travel, those that wish to stay can set up camp. Mikal, let me know if you need assistance, but I was a fighter before a priest, so my healing arts are limited."

The party makes it's introductions and are informed of the situation by young Tiegan under the tutelage of Keela. The Plainfield family and the Eggers have been left to trail the main body of the caravan as a precaution against infection. Both Keela's sister Senna and her husband Bill have taken ill along with two of their children. Only Tiegan and Keela seem to have been spared. The widower, Eggers, and his teenaged children have also been stricken with fever.
Fatine releases her animals from the immediate need to defend her whilst Mikal offers his services. His immediate impression is that Keela is in good health, but he is concerned about the young boy's colour and that he is running a bit of a temperature. A more careful examination of the wagons reveals that one is loaded down with supplies for the two families while the other two are currently serving as sleeping quarters for the sick.

Anrete and Caelnin keep a safe distance, the latter openly worried about his mule and his own frail health.

"Auntie Keelie helps Mum," Tiegan pipes up.
"But I think I could drive a wagon, if I needed to," she concludes.

"I can help you with farmer Eggers wagon, auntie!" Tiegan announces. "When I get bigger maybe I can help dad, just like Kyle helps his dad with their wagons."
Mikal and Jet check on those stricken with the illness that has necessitated their being quarantined from the rest of the caravan. Inside the Plainfield's wagon the family members seem feverish and prone to involuntary twitches, and tremors. Their symptoms are classic for a disease known as the Shakes. The disease is spread through contact with someone infected with the illness. The incubation period is 24 hours. The clerics know that 8 hours of rest and constant clerical ministration could help reverse the course of the illness. Inside the Eggers wagon, things are more serious. A teenaged girl lies lifeless, while a young adult male clutches his blanket about him as he shivers. A thin man with a long beard moans weakly as his body shakes uncontrollably. The healers will have their hands full with at least 6 very ill individuals.
Judging that it is safe to approach, Fatine greets Keela, poking fun at the men in the group. The witch is caught off guard by Jet's clever retort and Alexi's merry rebuttal.

"It's nice to meet you, Fatine," she adds. She watches the others make their preparations with a relieved smile on her face. "Well," she says. "Well. I guess you have things in hand. I'd better finish seeing to the horses."
As she speaks, she unloads the crossbow, and tries to put the weapon somewhere in reach. She tries it on her belt, but doesn't seem to like the weight. She tries carrying it, but frowns as she'll need both hands. Finally, she slings it awkwardly on her back, and begins walking toward the edge of the clearing.
With the crossbow out of the way, the two wands tucked into her belt are clearly visible.

His words are little more than statement as he walks back to the wagons and devotes himself fully to helping the sick. Not wanting to mention the one dead girl, his heart icing over just a little to deal with what he has in store.

Jet, is determined to see through these people with the illness, even if he too succumbs to it's invasion. He looks toward the dead person and the one that clings to them. "Come with me, I won't hurt you, but we have to make sure you don't get more sick." he says to the boy as he puts him in with the other wagon, away from the dead girl. He uses what he can remember about the proper burial procedure for the deceased, but also thinks that burning the corpse may also be appropriate.
Once the deceased is cared for and the sick are together, he begins assisting Mikal in ministrations of the sick.

With Jet's assistance Mikal is able to minister to the 6 ailing settlers. Fatine tries to help, but can do little more than watch as the clerics go about their work. Jet removes the body of the dead Eggers girl, wrapped tenderly in a blanket. A deep trench is easily dug in the soft forest earth, and afterwards a small cairn of stones is placed over the site to keep wild animals from digging up the corpse. There will be a time for mourning and prayer, but for now, the living require the services of the clerics.
Fearing contagion, the other members of the group set up a camp some distance from the wagons. Beren asks how they might support the healers, and sets to work building a fire, and boiling water, while Alexi and Keela tend to the horses.
Caelnin's faith in the clerics is well placed as nearing the middle of the night, Mikal is able to announce that the progress of the disease has been thwarted and the condition of the settler's won't be made any worse by transportation, should the party wish to depart on the morrow.

Jet does what needs to be done in regard to caring for the wagons occupants. Secure that the others have things under control, it is now Mikal who gives the orders and Jet that follows them. During the night, Jet probes the mind of the otherwise quiet cleric, finding out about his past and what he hopes to see in the future. After a few hours, he also begins to feel sweaty and a bit warm, so he allows Mikal to give him the same treatment the others received to avoid the worst of it.
That night, before he goes to sleep, he cures what wounds are still in the group. Sacrificing all his other spells that day.
He casts Cure Light Wounds on Anrete for 8 hit points. He casts Cure Light Wounds on Alexi for 8 points then again for 4 more. He cast Cure Minor Wounds on Beren for 1 point. He casts 2 Cure Minor Wounds on Bantom for 2 points.
After his morning salute to the gods, he says a few words over the girl that did not make it. He feels frustrated that the trains main priest didn't do more for the girl, allowing her perhaps to live, but deep inside, he knows it's Gargul's decision in the end.
With that, the group and their new companions follow the main train. (unless I forgot something.) Ignore the first three rolls, I forgot to change the d20 when curing.

"Just feeding and brushing them," Keela responds to Alexi. "I left the brushes and combs and things over there when I heard you approaching." She leads him to a shaded area where the horses are tethered. "I was going to take them for water a little later. I got off to a late start," she explains, "because there were the sick folk to see to, and Tiegan to watch." Automatically, her eyes dart to where Tiegan plays with Fatine's dogs.
Keela is self-conscious as she tends the horses. "I'm sure you do this much better," she tells Alexi, "being a cavalryman and all."
When she hears of the death, Keela's eyes fill with tears. "She--no! She can't be!" she says. "She was all right this morning. Well, she was sick, of course, but I helped her take a little gruel..and then she said she wanted to sleep--" Keela's voice catches on a sob, "so I left her. I shouldn't have left her," she continues wildly. "I should have stayed--oh! I wish I'd been the one to get sick, instead of Senna. Senna always knows what to do."
Visibly upset, Keela retires to her own family's wagon, re-assuring herself that they are still alive and recovering. The rest of the day, she does not stray far from them, and she gets little sleep that night.

OOC: by my calculations, the 12 hps healing from Jet and the 2hp healing from resting gets Alexi up to his max hps, fully healed. Too bad Jet didn't roll any N20s. :)
IC: After helping Keela tend to the draft horses, Alexi helps with the burial detail, handling everything with his mailed gauntlets. His mood is somber, quite a contrast from the night before. It was different when the inocent, and young, die.
He spends the rest of the day cleaning his weapons and armor, even showing Tiegan the proper way to take care of armor and weapons with oil and good cloth, if he's interested. "So, what do you want to be when you grow up, Tiegan?" he asks, to pass the time. He also proudly explains all the motifs and insignias on his armor and shield, especially the Wolf Cavalry Regiment insignia on his shield.
Alexi thanks Jet deeply for the healing. He can still picture Jet crumble beneath Wido's blow, as if it had been just the day before (hmm... I guess it was), and silently vows to be more attentive to the battle next time.
Alexi volunteers to take second watch again. As he looks up at the depths of the night sky and the brightness of the stars, he briefly wonders about the trio of scoundrels, then chuckles a bit.
Bright and early, Alexi wakes up completely refreshed. With the good news that they will be able to move on, he quickly gets Lobo ready even though he won't be ridden. Then he fetches the horses for the carts and starts hitching them up.

("I'm sure you do this much better," she tells Alexi, "being a cavalryman and all.")
"It's just a matter of practice. Knowing what to look for. Take these hoofs, for example. After a long day on a hard road, something could get stuck in the hoof, or loosen a shoe. If the horse trusts you, you can lift the hoof easily and inspect it. All these look fine," he says as he makes the rounds.
"With practice, you can be just as good as me," he says encouragingly.

Grief is Keela's first response when she learns the disease has claimed a female victim. Assuming it is her sister, Senna, she rushes to check on her brother-in-law, and the children, and finds her sister, still living, in their company. The Plainfield family are no longer visited by uncontrollable tremors and fits, thanks to the ministrations of Mikal and Jet The surviving Eggers: father and son, have also been stabilised. It is the teenaged Eggers girl who has been claimed by the god of life and death.
While the clerics look after the settlers, the others establish the camp under Beren's direction, or tend to the horses under Alexi's expert guidance. The animals get a good brushing down, are watered, and left to graze on the new spring grass of the clearing. The group then turns their attention to their own needs. The dinner stew is enriched by a little extra protein, thanks to Anrete's efforts.
Folks relax a little when it is learned the settlers are well enough to handle travel. Watches are set at Caelnen's suggestion, with Fatine, Pliny, and Lollena figured into the rotation so that the clerics can rest up from their endeavours. Jet does ask Mikal to check him out, as a precaution. The night passes uneventfully and folks wake refreshed, if somewhat sombre in mood. All are anxious to head out and catch up to the wagon train.
Alexi volunteers to take one of the wagons, hitching Lobo loosely to the back of the Egger's supply wagon. Keela might be able to manage the Plainfield's team. Pliny volunteers to manage the Eggers wagon, and Lollena joins him up front on the seat, after helping the carpenter tie their horses to the back.
With refreshed horses, the party makes good time in the morning. There are no complaints from the weak, but recovering settlers. Teigan is quieter than usual though, and as the morning progresses, starts to tremble and twitch involuntarily. Mikal and Jet start to feel a little feverish as well. The next morning, Keela emerges from the wagon looking fatigued, but otherwise neat and tidy. She wears a green dress today, with a long, light coat over it to keep off the dust of the trail.
She sees to her family's horses, then hitches Jem and Jeremiah to the wagon. Her own riding horse, Daisy, is tied to the back of the wagon so that she can follow.
Keela makes a final check on her family, still recovering in the wagon, before climbing into the driver's seat. "You can do this," she whispers to herself.
Her wands are once more tucked into her belt, and her crossbow rests on the floorboards at her feet. Tiegan sits next to her, with strict instructions not to touch the crossbow.
Tiegan, however, is looking very unwell, and Keela is alarmed. The wagons haven't gone very far before she turns to her nephew, wearing a brave smile that doesn't reach her eyes.
"Not feeling well, sweetheart?" she asks him. "Maybe you should go lie down in the wagon. I'll bet your brother and sister would love to hear all about Mistress Fatine and her dogs."

The party hitches wagons and follows the trail blazed by the larger caravan ahead. Alexi agrees with Keela that they should avoid coming into direct contat until all vestiges of disease have been purged from their companions, but that they should try to keep the caravan in sight if at all possible. Despite their best efforts and the stoicism of the ailing settlers, they are forced to stop after some ten miles of travel to minster to the sick. Mikal manages, with Berens ministrations to fight off the tremors that seem ready to overwhelm him at any moment and manages to provide some relief to the young boy as well. Alexi pitches in, assisting where he can while Caelnin scouts ahead. Anrete brews up a particularly disgusting syrup that actually tastes worse than it smells, and Alexi bravely takes the first swallow. Jet also fights off the trembling, although the fever still wracks his body.

DM Bob & Carla Monday July 7th, 2008 11:16:29 PM
The gods are with the party it seems, for after making camp, and resting for the remainder of the day, folks show signs of being on the mend. Jet is first to regain some natural colour. After confirming that he is no longer affected by the fever, he ministers to Mikal, and the boy Tiegan. Keela's assistance prooves valuable, and the cleric/fighter leaves the youngster in the woman's capable hands.
Thanks to Anrete's success at foraging, Beren is able to make a protein packed ragout of rabbit and wild bird.
Alexi favours the barbarian's foul tasting syrup, consuming an extra portion. He then tends to the horses, enlisting Pliny, and tendering an invitation to the woman who's extended family had been taken ill.
Fatine and Keela size each other up. Could the other woman be a friend with whom she might share magical confidences, or a competitor to be wary of?
As the fair spring day hints at night, folks volunteer for watches. The usual rotation is followed, though Caelnin pulls a double shift, and Pliny volunteers for Mikal's watch, in order to give the cleric more recovery time.
The next day is cloudy and cool, but without precipitation. Just an overcast early spring day carrying a hint of the winter so recently left behind. Folks are either recovered, or on the mend. Heal DC vs 13 to learn Highlight to display spoiler: {(there is no more contagion amongst the settlers or the party.)} A subdued farmer Eggars volunteers to take over the reigns of his wagon, freeing Alexi for other tasks. His son is too weak, though, and Pliny and Lollena insist on managing the Eggars second wagon. Keela's brother-in-law joins her on the box of the wagon, while the recovering mother keeps her recently ill children under wraps under the tent-like tarp of the wagon.
In all likelyhood, the caravan to Bryn Baraz is somewhere ahead with only a day and a half lead on the small group.

Astride Lobo again, and feeling much better after a night with weird dreams, he proposes that they push to travel a few miles more a day than the expected distance of the caravan. He also asks farmer Eggars to inspect the wagons before they move out and when they rest, as he doesn't know enough about wagons to be a reliable inspector.

Beren seems resigned to kitchen duty, and manages to cobble together something that will fill bellies, and keep hunger pangs at bay. Though the group brought little by way of rations with them, there are some dry good in the farmers' wagons, and the forest seems to be providing for the party as well.
Several of the party express a desire to make up time and distance in order to rejoin the caravan. Caelnin riding his new mare, and Anrete astride Copper scout out front while the others follow.
Relieved that her people are on the mend, Keela keeps her thoughts to herself, as does Fatine.
Bantom was well cared for during Jet's brief illness, however the cleric/fighter ensures the horse suffers no residual effects from wounds inflicted during combat. His investigation for sabotage reveals no discernable source for the infectious disease that affected the settlers.
Alexi assists farmer Eggars on a quick inspection of the wagons. The fastidious farmer assures the fighter the wagons are in good repair, and quietly thanks him for tending to the burial of his deceased daughter.
Over the next couple of days, the small caravan makes good time. Though not as fast as those on horse back, the 3 wagons cover a greater daily distance than the larger group further ahead. The scouts' spot evidence of the larger group's encampments and on each occasion the leaders urge the party on to a few more miles before they rest. At the conclusion of several days travel, the scouts report back to the small group that the tail end of the larger wagon train has been spotted up ahead!

The party anticipates their reunion with the caravan, albeit some with more zeal than others. Jet remains concerned about his report to Garth Turnbuckle and how their absence will be received, while the others simply look forward to the safety of numbers. As evening nears, a lone rider approaches from the direction of the caravan. He bears a standard similar to that carried by Jet The half-elf rides rapidly towards Jet, attracted perhaps by the standard he carries, and pulls his mount to a stop some 10 feet away. "Greetings!" he calls out. "You must be Jet. The wagonmaster asked us to keep an eye to the rear in hope of your return." He dismounts and approaches the wagons. "The names' Elethrin. We've been assigned to the rear in your absence". He moves about the wagons looking in at the occupants and checking any that still look haggard. "Looks like some of you have recovered" he offers hopefully, "but I am not a healer. How long has it been since any have shown symptoms?"
Assuming that Elethrin can be assured that the sickness has passed and that there is no danger of contagion, he will invite the settlers to rejoin the caravan some 1 hour ahead of the trailing wagons. "I will report your return to Turnbuckle and no doubt he will be there to receive you." The rider remounts and spurs his horse back the way he came, standard held aloft in his free hand.

The news that they are to rejoin their friends and acquaintances in the main group sends Senna into action. She is determined that her family will look their best. That evening, she heats extra water and washes the children (over their loud protests), dressing them in clean clothes. She makes sure her husband shaves and puts on a clean shirt, and she asks Keela to "do that clothes-cleaning spell."
With a little sigh, Keela casts her Prestiditiation and uses it to do laundry. She, too, washes her hands and face carefully and dresses in fresh clothing. She learned long ago that when Senna goes on one of these tears, it's best to go along.
The Plainfields (and Keela) are therefore looking their best when the time comes to rejoin the wagon train.

"Yours and my armor is evidence enough that we've been in a fight," Alexi jokes with Jet. "You'll need the blacksmith to plug those holes and gashes. I'll need one to fix this huge dent."
"Surely Durak, the dwarf cleric of Domi, can come by our camp tonight and check us over. By morning we should be cleared to join our own groups," Alexi comments.
"What group were you in, Keela? We were stuck at the end of the caravan, except on that day we scouted ahead. We killed two dire weasels that day that would have posed a great danger to our horses and children. Did you hear about that?" he asks Keela.
Alexi joins Jet up front until they reach the wagon train. He wants to be present whe they meet Garth. "I'll keep my mouth shut, Jet. I just want to hear for myself what he tells you," he assures Jet.
Alexi helps Beren set up camp (assuming we are still not allowed to join the main group yet) and takes his usual watch.
DM Bob & Carla Friday July 11th, 2008 1:01:46 AM
The group catches up to the tail end of the wagon train, but makes an independent camp a short distance away. It is easy to make out the familiar figures of the folks the group had been escorting since the start of the adventure as they go about preparing the communal evening meal around a central campfire a little way off.
Beren barely has time to set a kettle to boil, when the wagon master, escorted by the scout Elethrin call on them. Reaching out to grab Jet's hand, Garth shakes it vigorously. "Well done! Well done!" he growls, a wide smile splitting his face, " I see you've returned with more than the carpenter's bride!" The wagon master grabs Alexi's hand, and congratulates the fighter as well, "I am glad to see you delayed your return in order to provide protection to the settlers we had to leave behind. Elethrin reports contagion is no longer a concern?" Gareth greets the Plainfield's, including Keela, and the Eggers and asks after their health. He expresses his sorrow to the farmer for the loss of his daughter. Addressing the men, he announces, "you'll form up with the rest of these folks at the back, and travel under the protection of their security detail until we get to Bryn Baraz."
Gesturing to the group as a whole, Gareth Turnbuckle continues, "I'd suggest you join up with your circle to conserve resources. I've had to spread the security detail a little thin since you left us. I'll be back before you set watches to get your report."
Catching sight of Fatine, the wagon master approaches the witch. In a low voice he suggests, "your master has need of you. He's been naught but a pest, asking for extra security for his precious cargo of seeds and clay pots!"

Beren takes the return to the wagon train in stride. Again, he says nothing, but simply waits for instructions as to when he will go on watch.
He takes time in camp to brush down his horse, and check all of Red's harness. He cleans and oils all the leather and the saddle. Once that is taken care of, he proceeds to his other gear. He looks over the arrows he has acquired, making sure they are serviceable, and then hones his sword and other weapons as well.
When all of his housekeeping work on his equipment is finished, he speaks to the others gathered around the fire.
"If no one objects, I believe that I would like to have one of the extra daggers that we took from those men. Not the fancy jeweled one, but the other."
He will take his turn at watch when it comes, and then sleep until morning.

"We'll get joined back up within the hour then. We will take our standard watches as normal."
Seeing off Garth and Elethrin, they prepare to move on. He nods toward Fatine, "It was a pleasure to have your company M'Lady, on our small adventure. May the stench from your ear trophies forever be in the nose of your enemies." He then gives her a courtly bow, before he starts about his business. "Keela, what needs to be done, to get these wagons with the others? I can help." He reaches down and grabs her nearest nephew or niece within distance and hoists them up onto Bantoms saddled back. "Now just relax. This big guy right here just likes to be petted and shown respect, and he will do the same with you. Pull this rein for one direction, this for another. Do it gently, if you hurt him, he won't like it one bit, but just a little and he will know where you want to go. gently tap his flanks and he will walk. But she feels a pang of regret when she thinks of how nice it was to have people treat her as if she mattered. And not just any people, but the very important people who oversaw the settlers' security. It had been very pleasant to speak and be listened to, to be asked to do things (even though the prospect had sometimes terrified her). DM Bob & Carla Monday July 14th, 2008 5:58:42 PM Caelnin finds Vilria, although she looks nothing like the mule he left behind. She has been brushed and groomed to perfection. The scars from her encounter with the dire weasels have begun to fade, and new hair growth has helped obscure the wounds. She has put on weight, and her mane and tail have been adorned with the prettiest pink and light blue ribbons and bows. Two little girls stand near her, one with a soft brush and the other with a partially consumed carrot.
Fatine goes in search of Tarketh and finds the herbalist, haggard from watching over his wagon. Dark shadows have formed beneath his eyes and he is obviously relieved to see his apprentice. "Fatine, I am so glad to see you have returned safely. Turnbuckle has been no help in your absence. I requested an extra guard but he claimed they were spread too thin already...told me I'd have to fend for myself...clearly doesn't understand it's importance...roots and seeds indeed...but you're back now..." Tarketh waves his arms as he carries on, but in the end pronounces his intent to retire to his bed, and instructs Fatine to keep an eye on things.
Beren, Alexi, and Jet are welcomed back by the other members of the caravan and much is made of their bravery in rescuing Lollena and tending to the Plainfields and the Eggars. The general consensus is that those at the rear of the caravan have been well served. The six 'sisters' and their 'mother' pay rapt attention as the story is told, and 'ooh' and 'aah' as Alexi describes the battle. They make a fuss over the Plainfield children, and ask Keela if she is the mother.
Anrete keeps his distance from the goings on and sees to his pony 'Copper', as does Mikal who searches out his dwarven colleague.
One of the farmers, Ned, assures each of them that he has secured whatever gear they had left behind in the hurry of the chase, and points to his wagon. "All there in the back of m' wagon. The one with the red trim."
When Jet and Alexi brief the wagon master on their actions he listens carefully, nodding his head in approval and occasionally raising an eyebrow at the choices they made. "All in all a job well done" he congratulates them. "Sounds like Tarketh's strange apprentice was more useful than most would have guessed. Better bring her along on your next scouting foray. I'll speak to Tarketh and see that he's amenable. The man's a bit of a worrier and might be reluctant otherwise."
Turnbuckle tells the two that they will soon be leaving the Crying Woods and entering a much more rugged landscape. "Lots o' hills and scrublands" he explains, "and lots o' rumors of Orcs and others up to no good...we'll need to be on our toes. Your lot will be on point in three days, till then you'd best rest up and get those wagons at the back organized and ready to travel. Might want to teach a few of them how to defend themselves when you get the chance."

Beren avoids most of the congratulations and attention given to the returning group, slipping off to be by himself. Perhaps someday he will be able to rid himself of the scars of his childhood. Until then, he would prefer to stay away from crowds. He settles back into the camp routine, taking his accustomed turn at watch.
Taking the wagon masters instructions to heart, he offers basic instruction in archery to some of the older boys and younger men.
Hearing that there might be Orcs ahead brings a strange glint into his eyes, and he once again checks his weapons and gear.

Keela Monday July 14th, 2008 10:37:21 PM
"They are my sister's children," Keela explains with a little smile. "I'm an old maid." She feels hardly any pang at all when she says that. Perhaps in another few years, she thinks, I won't mind saying it at all.
She is curious about the odd "family" she is speaking with, but too polite to ask questions. So many daughters, so close to the same age! she thinks, And no sons or husband to help the poor woman out. What a handful they must have been when they were younger!
Caelnin Monday July 14th, 2008 10:46:54 PM
Caelnin smiles while he looks at the pretty bows tied to his old Vilria's mane and tail and it looks as though Vilria is having a great time.
Caelnin dismounts from Huethira and says to his mule "Looking great, Aren't you Vilria? These two girls been taking care of you, right? Thank you, little ladies for grooming her and taking care of her when I was away. May I ask how you received the job of taking care of her, and would you know anything of my wagon? Or shall I ask for your mother to answer these questions for me?"

"Orcs eh? Well, I suppose if they can't be talked to, we'll have to fight them. One way or another, we will deal with it then."
Jet seeks out Pliney that evening and pulls him aside to speak with him. DM Only Highlight to display spoiler: {"I just wanted to let you know, you did a good job back there my friend. I want to thank you for wanting to come along. I also want to apologize to you for speaking to you the way I did. It wasn't necessarily called for and I regret doing it, but there was some small concern that your emotions would not allow you to think proper. Heck, if someone took the lady I was to marry, I'd skin them alive and throw them in a pile of salt, but you're a better man then me, allowing him to go like that. Well anyway, my apology is there and I understand if you desire someone else to perform your ceremony."}
He then goes and takes care of Vaya, get's his own gear in order and proceeds to Garth after his shift. "Wagon Master? There is a lady in our group that is a wizard. I would like to ask your permission to allow her to join the security detail. Fatine did a remarkable job when dealing with the kidnappers as well as the sickness, but we may not have full access to her, depending upon the wishes of her master. It would be good for the train to add Keela on to the detail. If Fatine is able to join us again, then the two wouldn't really hurt at all either."
Mikal Monday July 14th, 2008 11:15:47 PM

Gathering up his gear from Ned, Alexi thanks his farmer friend for taking care of it.
Seing Vilria all primped up, he chuckles merely.
Now settled down, he names his new horse Lupin.
Alexi delights in seeing Beren come out of his shell somewhat, teaching others the art of marksmanship and volunteers to be his assistant.
Alexi encourages Keela to get to know the others in the group. "Don't be tied down to your sister's family too much. You need friends your own age too. I'd suggest getting to know Fatine better, but that may be impossible, and who really knows how old she is? But maybe Lollena could use some help. Alexi (AC: 17, HP:25/25) Lobo (AC: 14, HP:37/37) Tuesday July 15th, 2008 5:50:57 PM
Alexi tries to hide his embarrassment, "Oh, but you look so young, I thought... oh... well, I didn't mean leave your family, just also loof for good friendships with others...oh, my watch will be starting soon, I'd better go make sure all is ready..." and Alexi bows slightly and hurries off to his little camp near Farmer Ned's wagon.
While he gets his sleeping gear ready so he can plop right into it he muses, 'What we need is another big cookout. Celebrate Lollena's return and honor the Egger's girl...'
DM Bob & Carla Tuesday July 15th, 2008 8:22:22 PM Fatine relieves Tarketh of the night watch and allows the herbalist some well deserved sleep each night. Her two dogs, ever alert, rest beneath the wagon until the witch makes her rounds. Then, they rise up and pad quietly beside the witch. During the day, Fatine slumbers in the wagon, lulled to sleep by the rocking motion of the wagon and the soft clinking from various pots and bell jars that surround her.
Beren also settles into a routine, keeping to himself at night and riding on the flank of the caravan each day. He begins teaching a few of the boys some archery skills and over the next day or two a few begin to show some basic proficiency.
Caelnin finds his cart under Ned's watchful eye. The farmer has hooked it in tandem with his own team in the elf's absence, and has cared well for the contents. The two little girls point out 'Uncle Ned' and tell Caelnin that they have been promised an allowance if they took care of Vilria. "We even brushed her teeth" they announce with obvious pride in their work.
Jet pulls Pliny aside to explain his earlier hesitancy, but Pliny will have none of it. "Not another word!" he tells the cleric. "You were just doin' your job. Lollena and I are ever so thankful for all you did." The carpenter's Adam's apple bobs up and down with excitement as he receives the clerics praise. "If you n' yours ever need something built, or something sewn, you come see us!" Pliny reassures Jet that they would not think of having anyone else conduct their wedding. Jets' conversation with Garth, while less exuberant, is equally productive. The wagon master knows little about the Plainsfield woman and advises Jet that the matter is in his hands and best judgement.
Alexi spends the next few days regaling all that will listen with the tale of their exploits. The children listen to the story over and over. He finds time to counsel Keela on her love life and finds himself the recipient of many a good natured wave as he goes about his daily tasks, and more than once he is greeted with a warm smile by one or more of the 'sisters'.
Anrete maintains his watch over the next several evenings and patrols the flank of the caravan on his trusty steppe pony during the days. A few of the settlers remark on his distant attitude, but they are glad to have someone of his abilities watching over them.
Mikal rejoins his fellow cleric aboard the dwarf's wagon and they pass the time discussing their god's and other divine matters during the bumpy trip.
The next several days pass quietly enough as the caravan makes good time through the thinning forest near the edge of the Crying Woods. Just as Garth Turnbuckle had advised, the caravan breaks out of the forest into a series of low rolling hills, too dry to support more than stunted low growing shrubs and sparse grasses. Things get a lot dustier at the back of the wagon train, and more than once, a wagon falls behind as the rougher terrain takes a toll on axles and wooden wheels.
The evening of their second day in the hill country, Garth visits the rear most wagons to check on their well being. In the course of his inspection he takes a moment to speak with Tarketh. The herbalist and the wagon master have an extended discussion with much arm waving and debate. All of this takes place out of earshot from the party, but when Garth gives Jet his new orders it is clear that he has not been successful in convincing the herbalist to allow Fatine to accompany the scouts the following day.
"Your lot is on point tomorrow. We need to stick to the valley floor where water can be found and where the wagons can find an easier path. The valley should bend to the northeast up ahead. Keep a sharp eye on those hills!" With that he retreats back towards the front of the wagon train.

Jet enjoys his time in the saddle. He loves the way his and Bantoms' armor make it's own music.
The morning after his talk with Garth, he goes to see Keela and her family. "I understand the situation of your family depending upon Keelas' skills, but the entire train needs her skill, especially in a couple of days when we ride as scouts." He smiles big and looks over at Keela, "So unless you object to the notion, please ride with the security detail and put yourself on first, second or third watch, as you need for your own spell memorization. You may want to ask Alexi about passwords or some such if you on his watch with him. You can speak to the others as well, about your shifts. If you need a horse, you can use one of those we brought back from the rescue until we get you your own. You can ride beside your family most of the day, but make a presence elsewhere as well and keep those wands handy." He finishes with a friendly wink.
To help those in the train with fighting skills, he teaches people how to throw sharp objects like knives, axes or even a cast iron skillet, if that's all they have available. He also explains how to lead a shot and throw where the target will be when it hits, instead of where it is when you throw it.
He yearns to get blue blind paralytic drunk as soon as he can. This journey has been exciting in many ways so far and he has a lot of memories, good and bad, he needs to drink to.
The morning of that day, he wakes up with a cheerful expression on his face and at breakfast tells everyone of his dreams. "So I found myself in this bar after I stepped through roaring flames in a fireplace. I got into an argument with a gnome and a halfling. After they assaulted me, I challenged them to a duel, in which they wisely got away from. The argument started over some ancient game where people on ice skates hit a puck with a stick. Imagine it, not enough blood but I won a contest to see who would win. Then I got into a drinking contest with a dwarf. I can't believe it, we drank the owner and that gnomish troublemaker under the table, but then after many drinks, I succumbed to the intoxication." He takes a drink of ale with his mouthful of salted ham. "Oh realm of shadows, I haven't even told you about the Flaming Green Gnomish I drank." He shakes his head, "I have got to dream about that place again, oh magical tapestries........." He continues on about it through the day, remembering parts of it as he thinks about it.

Mikal continues to spend most of the journey healing the injured, treating tired animals, and counciling the weary travelers.

He attempts to stay cheerful, but is quickly growing more weary and longing for the company of his brother bard.
Smiling at the thought of his brothers music, he pulls out his flute and attempts to play a tune, the first one his brother taught him. The tune comes to him quite readily, and his fingers find ease in playing the notes to soothe his weary soul.

The rest of the day passes slowly for the party. Anrete, Caelnin, Alexi, and Fatine all seem eager to be out on patrol, albeit probably for different reasons. Tarketh objects to Fatine's decision, but in the end allows that she is of equal value to the caravan while out on patrol. The day is equally long for Mikal who grows despondent at his separation from family. Perhaps a hard ride and the possibility of a hostile encounter will occupy him.
Jet invites Keela to join the scouting party. Puzzled at first, she notices his attention to the wands at her belt and concludes that they are in need of arcane assistance. She agrees to join. The cleric spends the rest of the day teaching settlers the basics of self defence.
The evening passes uneventfully, and a crisp spring morning greets the party upon waking. Garth drops by and re-iterates his directions of the previous day before wishing them good speed. The party mount their steeds and head north. Vilria remains behind, hitched to Ned's wagon, content to lean against the wooden spokes of the wheel.

The crisp morning soon turns warm as the sun rises above the hills. The land remains sparsely vegetated and the only things obscuring their view are the hills themselves. The party spreads out in a serpentine ribbon with Caelnin and Berin taking the lead. The two bowmen see no signs of any danger and lead the group along the valley bottom. Jet accompanies the ladies and advises them to rereat if out-numbered and warn the wagon train. His suggestion is treated with scorn by Fatine who has already shown her mettle in combat and regales Keela with the tale. Alexi, Mikal, and the ever solitary Anrete bring up the rear, keeping a careful eye on their back trail.
The mornings progress is swift, even with Beren's occasional foray away from the group. Towards midday the valley begins to swing northeast as the wagon master foretold, and the valley begins to narrow, rising ever so gently into the hills ahead of them.

"Shish," Alexi lets out a low whistle and comments to Mikal, "Dee Big Man got his dandruff up,eh?"
Alexi likes being able to see a lot of ground even though the lack of vegetation could mean hardship on the animals. However, as the valley narrows, he has the same feeling about the place as Keela, and probably all the others.
"Actually," he comments to Keela, "The ambush place would be in the middle, with a secondary ambush force at the entrace ready to strike to close the entrance off."
He trotts up to Jet and says in a low voice, "We should pause here and allow Beren, Caelnin, and Anrete thoroughly check this entrance area. Spending the extra time is worth it."
Grumbling a bit he says, "WIth a proper scouting force, we'd have a squad up on those hills too. Sigh".

The warmth of the day and the gentle breeze makes for an easy ride. None of the adventurer's notice anything out of the ordinary. Jet and Fatine exchange words, the former invoking his authority as leader and the need for teamwork before the witch agrees to his arrangements.
The afternoon passes quietly and Beren and Caelnin identify a good site for the caravan to rest. A small spring seeps up through the ground providing sufficient moisture for a few trees to have taken root. There is ample room for all the wagons, and the surrounding hillsides provide a vantage from which to view the trail ahead and behind. A ride ahead for several miles reveals neither danger, nor better opportunity for a camp.
Upon return to the campsite, the party has opportunity to further scout the immediate surroundings as they await the caravan's arrival.
[OOC a spot vs DC 15 reveals Highlight to display spoiler: { a black curl of smoke rising from the south, the direction from which the wagon train is expected. As they watch, the tendril of smoke grows thicker and darker}

Alexi Spot d20+1= 3 (duh, I don't see nutting!)
Alexi suggests that they split up into two groups of 4 and further scout out the area keeping some 50 feet appart.
Jet, Caelnin, Fatine, and Anrete Beren, Alexi, Mikal, and Keela.
Caelnin AC:16 HP:16/16 d20+7=21 ; Saturday July 19th, 2008 11:49:59 PM
Caelnin looks south towards the horizon. "Fire in such a desolate place like this? Does it mean that the train is having a bit of trouble. We should go and take a look at it."
Beren (AC18 16/16HP) -Sub/Al d20+9=16 ; Sunday July 20th, 2008 7:57:09 AM
At Caelnin's words, Beren turns in the saddle and brings a hand up to shade his eyes. (Spot 16)
"Fire's just started. And building." He points in the direction of the darkening column of smoke. Points for the benefit of the others.
Wheeling Red around to the south, he looks to the standard bearer, Jet.
"Let's ride." With but the slightest kick, Beren's eager pony surges forward, to the south, back in the direction of the wagon train.
Keela d20+2=16 ; Sunday July 20th, 2008 10:51:57 AM
Keela happens to be looking in exactly the right place, and sees the smoke [Spot 16!]. When Beren spurs his horse and takes off, Keela follows on Daisy as best she can.
Fatine [AC 18, HP 10/10] Dogs [AC 16, HP 13/13, 13/13] Mage Armor, Entropic Shield, Cat's Grace d20+5=16 ; d20+7=15 ; Sunday July 20th, 2008 1:53:28 PM
Fatine looks where the others are watching, and notices the smoke. If the others ride for it, she whistles for the dogs and follows.
Her crow lands on her shoulder with a "Squawk, squawk!" "Yes, Col. Smoke. No, dee worms prolly not be burnin.'"
Anrete Nanoc (AC17, HP21/21) d20+3=5 ; Sunday July 20th, 2008 9:16:36 PM
Deep in thoughts, Anrete did not notice the smoke behind him until the two elves pointed it out. Wheeling Copper about, the barbarian rides after the ranger.
Alexi (AC: 17, HP:25/25) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37) Monday July 21st, 2008 12:32:17 AM
"Smoke? What smoke?" Alexi looks puzzled. "Oh, THAT smoke!" he finally exclaims as it is pointed out to him. Not to be left behind, he puts his bow away and takes ofter the others.
"'Cmon Lobo. Either someone's overcooked their dinner or we've got trouble!"
DM Bob & Carla Monday July 21st, 2008 7:46:51 AM Calenin's keen elven eyes are the first to spot the smoke, followed quickly by Beren, Keela and Fatine. The party spur their horses and surge back towards the direction of the wagon train. As they move, the faster horses begin to leave their slower cousins behind and the group spreads out in a ragged line. Any that look to the horizon will notice the smoke column growing, whether from the nearing distance or from a building fire is hard to say. The party rides hard for several minutes, covering a little over a mile. Their best guess is that the source of the smoke lies over the next hill.
Beren (AC18 16/16HP) -Sub/Al d20+9=20 ; d20+9=19 ; d20+7=24 ; d20+9=19 ; Monday July 21st, 2008 9:10:51 AM
Light and bred for the quick skirmish, Red outpaces some of the others. But, as horse and rider draw near the crest of what seems the last rise, Beren reins, holding a fist high in the air for a halt.
Slipping from the saddle, the elfish ranger makes the rest of the way to the ridge in a swift and silent crouch. The last few feet are wormed through the grass on knees and elbows.
At the crest, he takes in the scene. With hope, they have made it back in time. With luck, there will be nothing amiss at all.

Fatine rides along with the group. Once the reach the hill and Beren dismounts, she comes to a halt and hops off her horse. Removing a wand from her belt, she taps herself once, then each of her dogs.
Actions: use 3 charges of mage armor, one on self and one on each dog.
Keela Monday July 21st, 2008 3:02:35 PM
Daisy is a retired plow-horse, and Keela is no expert rider. They get a decent start, but before long they are trailing the group.
When Beren stops at the top of the hill, Keela is still behind. Fortunately, the pause gives her time to catch up.
Mikal d20+3=14 ; d20+3=20 ; Monday July 21st, 2008 3:51:45 PM
Mikal continues to bring up the rear, keeping diligent watch out for any trouble.

Once Caelnin reaches said hill, he dismounts and tries to keep Huethira away from the action. "I just don't know how to handle you in combat yet... Stay here while I check what's up with the fire."
Caelnin wanting not to be seen takes the same route as Beren, although a little bit less stealthy (Hide 15, Move Silently 19) and checks over the hill to see the happenings. (Listen 18, Spot 24)

Lobo is a huge warhorse but is carrying a lot of weight and Alexi does not push him. So he lags behind with Keela and Mikal. Reaching the bottom of the hill he sees the faster ones stopped just below the crest, with Beren and Caelnin peeking over the top. He reigns Lobo in and moves at normal speed to join up with the others. He stays mounted, though, and looks at their surroundings for signs of trouble.

Dismounting from Copper, the swift moving barbarian creeps up beside the elves and survey the scene.
