A Time to Loose, and a Time to Seek

DM Bob & Carla  d20+5=25 ;
Tuesday July 22nd, 2008 12:00:54 AM

Beren brings his comrades to a halt below the crest of the hill and dismounts where he cannot be seen by whatever or whomever might lie over the hill. Anrete, Caelnin, and Fatine follow suite with Mikal and Keela bringing up the rear. They all creep to the crest of the hill from where they can survey the scene below them without notice. All but Alexi, who remains mounted and silhouettes himself against the sky.

Below them the wagon train is in chaos. Several wagons near the middle of the caravan have come to rest on their sides, burning vigorously. Horsemen savage the leading wagons with arrows, while other riders hack down any that attempt to come out and engage them. Turnbuckle, or at least a heavy set man that ought to be Turnbuckle is shouting orders at the settlers to tighten up the wagons, while at the same time directing his security details in defense of his wagon train. As Beren and the others watch, one of the security detail is picked from his horse by an arrow, the banner he carried drops from his hands as he falls and is trampled beneath the horses of his adversaries.

The flames and smoke partly obscure the rear of the caravan from view. From their vantage above the ensuing carnage, Alexi and his comrades can see horsemen moving in for the attack, horsemen that from the front of the wagon train would go unnoticed. There are at least 20 horsemen engaging the caravan, although in the chaos below it is hard to get an accurate count.

From off to the side of the battle they hear a distinctive shout and a lone rider gestures. Four horsemen break from the wagon train and spur their charges towards Alexi.

(OOC: Codi, please post the need for a sub to play Mikal in the LnB if you are going to be unable to post. We are entering combat and it is of paramount importance (life or death!) that players post.-DMs Bob and Carla)

Beren (AC18 16/16HP) -Sub/Al  d20+6=11 ;
Tuesday July 22nd, 2008 7:45:52 AM

"Riders." The ranger's voice is cold and analytical. "They'll overwhelm us if we're on foot. Stay close to your mount."

Standing from out of the grass, Beren looses an arrow at the lead of the four riders. A narrowing of his eyes is the only trace of reaction as the shaft flies wide of its mark. (Hit AC11)

"Take these four down, and we'll draw the attackers to us. It will give the wagons time to regroup."

"Then we'll have to fight our way to them."

OoC: I'll sub for Mikal. I'm here for the week anyway. One problem, though. The CS for Mikal up on Woldipedia is not published. I can't view it. Also, I don't have spells for the day. Codi or Bob and Carla, could you email me the CS? changa@charter.net

Codi, if you don't post by 6PM PDT, I'll post for you.

Caelnin AC:16 HP:16/16  d20+7=24 ;
Tuesday July 22nd, 2008 8:16:57 AM

"If the time comes, guess I'll have to learn mounted combat the hard way. Hope Vilria comes out fine in the ruckus"

Never wanting to be outdone by Beren in marksman ship, Caelnin jumps up and shoots an arrow towards his new found enemies (24 vs. AC) and gives out a small smirk of delight.

"Nice to know I'm still a good shot" Calenin thinks.

Mikal
Tuesday July 22nd, 2008 10:07:35 AM

Mikal draws his longsword and mutters a quick prayer to Alemi.

"Riders approach, make ready!"

OOC: Thanks for the offer Berren. In the future, I'll definitely thank you for playing my character in my absence. I'll fix the character sheet problem, I think I have it private.

As of the news of my cat, we found a good vet that will work with us. So crisis averted, I shouldn't have problems posting for the rest of the week. So into battle we go!

Back Post When Fatine acknowledeges his words, he nods his head without the typical smile he wears and tros off to ride in front of them a ways.

Back Post Two Listen: 19, Spot: *
Although he did not see the smoke trailing up behind them, he hears easily those others who have talking about it. "Stay together as a group. Don't get to spread out, or we are easy victims against numbers.

Once they come to the top of the hill, he too dismounts to assess the situation. It won't do the wagon train any good if they are killed quickly without any real help to the settlers.
His guts turn on the inside as he worries about the non combatants in the train and he hopes, the knowledge those around him spread to them, helps to save their life. He sees the four horsemen riding to them and he tells Alexi "I want you to pretend you are running away, a small way down the hill and prepare your sword and shield." He looks to the ladies, once those four leave the sight of their commander, I want you to sleep them and tie them up. Alexi, you take out whoever it does not effect." He looks to Mikal, "You stay here with Alexi and the ladies, to assist. When all of you are done, go for the other archers." Then to Beren, Caelnin, and Anrete, "You three are with me, we ride to take out the leader. Mount up."

Jet pulls his sword and leads the three with him around the side of the hill if possible, instead of over it where the four approch. When he has a clear view of their leader, Jet heads straight for him in a flanking position, if possible.

OOC: Can we please have some distance ranges for all of these situations oh mighty DM's?

Fatine [AC 16, HP 10/10] Dogs [AC 20, HP 13/13, 13/13] Mage Armor
Tuesday July 22nd, 2008 11:27:47 AM

Fatine watches the chaos below them, then swings herself back into the saddle. Looking at Keela, she says, "Dis be where dee fun start, eh sister?"

She grabs a few of the dolls hanging from her belt and caresses them lovingly. Moving her horse, she puts herself into a position where she can cast a spell as soon as she sees the riders. Leaning over, the whispers a command to each dog. The two canines immediately tense, the hair on the backs standing up, and they bare the fangs as they begin moving slowly around fatine's horse.

Actions:
- give guard command
- move if needed to a position she can cast from, away from Keela so they aren't next to each other
- ready action to cast sleep (if able to ready an action) upon seeing the riders reach the top of the hill. Will save DC is 16.

Keela [AC 16; hp 12/12]
Tuesday July 22nd, 2008 1:22:05 PM

Keela had just come clattering up to the foot of the rise when the others were taking a look from the top. She does not dismount, knowing that she'll need help to get back up.

Sick terror claws at her stomach when she hears that the wagons are in danger. Senna? Daben? The children?

With an effort, she forces herself to focus on the task at hand. Master Thaddeus's instructions ring in her ears.

If you should ever get into a fight, remember to protect yourself first. A dead mage is no good to anyone.

Accordingly, Keela pulls one of the wands from her belt and taps herself with it.

[Use wand to cast Mage Armor: duration 1 hour.]

Alexi (AC: 17, HP:25/25) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37)  d20+6=13 ; d20+8=10 ;
Tuesday July 22nd, 2008 10:24:57 PM

OOC: well, I didn't describe Alexi's actions very well. I intended him to stop where the others Horses were, NOT where THEY were. DOH! Upon re-reading my post, I can see why the DM thought I'd just stuck myself upon the crest and yelled out 'I flirt in your general direction!'

Although I'd like to say I'm not stupid enough to prop myself up and say 'Hey boys, look at me!', I think it will work out well, and we may have done something distracting like that anyway. :}

IC: Alexi nods at Jet imperceptably and with one last look at the four horsemen, turns Lobo around and heads down hill about half way. With his back to the hill, he remains tense and ready to run down the rest of the hill, glancing over his shoulder every few seconds to see what's happening.

Regardless of how many are affected by Fatine's spell, he will turn Lobo around when he sees that he can charge the frontmost horseman with his lance without having to go uphill.

DMs: Using Ride-by-attack for the remainder of the move after the attack; Using Spirited Charge; Using Mounted Combat to negate one attack on Lobo per round.

Spirited Charge attack: d20+6= vs AC 13

Anrete Nanoc (AC17, HP21/21)
Tuesday July 22nd, 2008 11:37:37 PM

Anrete readies his lance and shield as he follows after Jet

DM Bob & Carla (Hill Crest - Combat Rnd 1)
Wednesday July 23rd, 2008 7:56:43 AM

The 4 horses, spurred by their riders charge up the hill. They are still some two hundred feet from the crest when the first arrows are loosed by Beren and Caelnin. Only Caelnin's arcing shot finds a target and buries itself into one of the rider's thigh. The horse veers to one side before the injured rider can regain control of his steed and press on up the hill.

Keela uses one of her wands to cast a protective spell on herself while Fatine readies a sleep spell. The witch quickly recognizes that they are still too distant and she must wait for them to close within range.

Jet assesses the situation and barks an order for Mikal and Alexi to stay with the women, feigning retreat, while he and the two archers ride against the leader. Alexi, has other ideas, and rather than retreat, has already charged down the hill, lance held lightly in his arm. Within seconds the former Fist will be in striking range and the battle will truly be engaged.

The 4 attacking horsemen continue to charge up the hill. The steep grade limits the speed at which they can approach [probably double moves for horses]. Alexi charges by, his lance failing to find a target and he soon finds himself 30 feet downhill of his foes. The horsemen are now only 80 feet from the crest of the hill in a tight bunch and Fatine can choose whether to cast her spell or not. It is now obvious that two of the four horsemen are half-orcs in chain shirts. Large swords in sheathes slap against the sides of their mounts. The other two are of lighter build, perhaps half-elves. They have bow's strapped across their shoulders and swords at their sides.

Fatine [AC 16, HP 10/10] Dogs [AC 20, HP 13/13, 13/13] Mage Armor
Wednesday July 23rd, 2008 8:31:54 AM

Fatine calmly surveys the scene on the hill, and readies two of the wooden dolls in her hands. Looking at Keela, she suggests, "Aim high. Dose horses not be enemies."

Mumbling a few words, she covers the eyes of each doll with her fingers, then spits twice, onced on each of the dolls. Throwing them to the ground, she points at the riders, though focusing at a point above their heads.

The dogs stay by the side of her horse, eying the riders and waiting to defend their mistress if needed.

Action:
Cast sleep, centered on a point 5' above the heads of the rear pair of riders.
Affects up to 4HD of creatures.
Will save DC 16.

Caelnin AC:16 HP:16/16
Wednesday July 23rd, 2008 9:36:51 AM

Once Jet's orders are set, Caelnin runs back to Huethira and says "Sorry, girl. I know you are not well suited to the situation but orders are orders."

Caelnin then mounts, taking his time. He was never good at riding horses, and he knows that he might need a bit of practice after this trial is over. "Hopefully I will stay on the horse..."

Wednesday July 23rd, 2008 10:18:46 AM

OOC: DM's, I took Alexi's post to mean, he did as Jet had told him and retreated away from the train waiting for the riders to crest the hill. Not to charge them immedietly. If the riders couldn't make it to the top of the hill that round, I don't think he would have attacked yet.

Jet continues to ride with those that followed his direction. His intention is to break the morale of the aggressors by defeating their leader.

Beren (AC18 16/16HP) -Sub/Al
Wednesday July 23rd, 2008 10:25:27 AM

Beren gauges speed and distance.

"Don't linger," he warns the others. "Throw what you have at them, then mount up. They will be here before you know it, and run you down."

The ranger turns without firing another shot, crossing the sort distance between himself and Red in a quick sprint. With one hand, he grasps the pommel and swings up onto the brief riding pad.

"Lye auta dagora," he whispers into the ear of his mount. We go to battle.

OoC: By my calculations, they'll be at the crest and attack end of next round. Best be mounted by then and on the move. Takes a move action to mount, btw.

Keela [AC 16; hp 12/12]  d4+1=4 ;
Wednesday July 23rd, 2008 3:29:17 PM

[OOC: Sorry about the "if/then" post. I know from experience how DMs loooove them. :D ]

If two or more enemy riders are still up:

Keela watches Fatine's casting with interest. She vaguely recognizes the spell, and inwardly acknowledges that her own won't be quite as powerful. However, it's the best one to try at the moment.

She gestures to the remaining riders and cries "Somnolus!" Then she spurs Daisy and follows her new companions.

[cast Sleep on the riders left awake. Will Save DC 14; use my move action to follow the group]

If only one rider remains:

Keela watches Fatine's casting with interest. She vaguely recognizes the spell, and inwardly acknowledges that her own isn't quite as powerful. With only one rider remaining, however, it's time to try something else.

She points at the remaining rider, and shouts "Projecto!" A single missile flies from her fingers, unerringly striking the rider. Then she spurs Daisy and follows her new companions.

[Cast Magic Missile at the remaining rider for 4 damage; use my move action to follow the group]

If no riders remain:

Keela is somewhat taken aback by her new companions' efficiency. The four riders are down, just like that!

Hastily, she spurs Daisy to follow the others--with a spell ready, just in case.

[Follow the group; ready an action to cast Magic Missile at the first available target, for 4 points damage.]

Mikal
Wednesday July 23rd, 2008 8:11:51 PM

Mikal holds up the rear, making ready to hold the line if nessicary and keep the riders from reaching the caravan.

Alexi (AC: 17, HP:25/25) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37)
Wednesday July 23rd, 2008 8:48:04 PM

OOC: Ok, I don't know how the DM got this wrong. Quote: Alexi nods at Jet imperceptably and with one last look at the four horsemen, turns Lobo around and heads down hill about half way. With his back to the hill, he remains tense and ready to run down the rest of the hill, glancing over his shoulder every few seconds to see what's happening.

Now, Alexi is facing the riders, turns Lobo around and heads down hill. I don't know how he would be looking OVER his shoulder at the top of the hill waiting for the riders if he was charging DOWN the hill at them. So please make the correction. He is NOT on the other side of the hill, he is on the side of the hill they just came from. He was waiting until they crested the hill, saw him, and chased after him. Wherein he would finish his downhill run, go a ways and turn back around to charge them. This would give the spell casters a distraction to get their spells off and hopefully Alexi would be facing fewer riders than otherwise.

Alexi (AC: 17, HP:25/25) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37)
Wednesday July 23rd, 2008 9:01:08 PM

OOC: now that we are all clear on where Alexi is, halfway down HIS side of the hill waiting for the enemy to crest, I can post an addendum to my previous plan to be a decoy.

IC: Alexi, looking over his shoulder, waiting for the enemy to crest over it, tells Fatine to let him know how many are left after the spells and when they are about to crest the hill so he can be ready to spur Lobo.

IE: Hold Action until they crest the hill. IF they see Alexi and go after him, he continues down the hill.

IF they see Fatine and go after her, he turns Lobo back uphill to attack them.

Use the same rolls Alexi used before, so I know Alexi allready missed. But Alexi isn't going to leave Fatine alone.

OOC:

Ke, I am confused on the whole thing now. If 3 or more riders are still standing, Anrete will charge down and engage them as he don't believe Alexi and Mikal can take 3 of them by themselves. Else he will follow Jet if things seem to be in control.

IC1:

"Not that I am doubting Alexi fighting abilities, but I think they need some help." Wheeling Copper to face the riders, Anrete charges at the remaining half-orcs as he bellows his challenge.

As the riders charge up the hill, Fatine unleashes her spell. The lead rider, a large brute with orcish features goes limp in his saddle. The horse carries him a short distance before he falls forcibly to the ground. Awakened by the fall, all he can muster is a surprised expression at being so easily dismounted.

The remaining riders continue their advance, impervious to Keela's sleep spell which seems to have no effect. She and Fatine chime out in near unison that three of the horsemen continue to close. They crest the hill in near unison and immediately spot Alexi and Mikal near the bottom of the hill and Caelnin mounting his horse. One of the riders, a half orc by the look of him, breaks towards Caelnin while the other two continue towards Alexi and [/b]Mikal. A fourth horse appears atop the hill. Missing it's rider, it merely follows the other horses.

Anrete charges from the side and narrowly misses the half orc heading towards Caelnin.

Please note that Jet and Beren are 30 feet off of the map to the right having started to ride around the hill after the lone rider who signaled their presence.

"Jet, no," is all that the ranger says. Wheeling Red about, Beren takes a shot from the saddle. Even before the shaft reaches its half-elfish target, Beren and Red are pounding up the slope to circle the melee.

She rides up closer--so close to one of them, in fact, that she needs to use her special training to cast the spell so she won't get hit.

Remembering how Master Thaddeus taught her, she moves carefully through the casting, then cries "Chromatos!" and extends a hand toward the riders. Swirling, clashing colors leap from her hands.

OOC: I can't picture the sloping hill well but my intent was not have to charge uphill and take the height disadvantage. With that in mind...

IC: "Mikal, follow me!" Alexi yells. "When I turn back, you turn back also! Follow behind me and attack the one I attack so he'll get hit twice!" Alexi relays his strategy to Mikal as he urges Lobo down the rest of the hill. A quick glance over his shoulder to target his foe, then a about face with Lobo (Ride Check for quick 180 deg turn may be in order d20+8 = 18).

By now Alexi expects at lest one rider coming down right at the bottom of the hill, that's why the quick over the shoulder look. Either way, he charges the nearest rider. (I'll have to keep my previous rolls that missed, I'm sure, sigh.)

Having missed the rider, he hopes Mikal has been able to turn his horse around adequately and manages take a swing at him.

Ride-By-Attack will put Lobo 'x' feet behind the rider, I'll let you DM's figure out how far, no Att of Opp as he rides by and misses. His next action will depend on who's still mounted and doing what.

OOC: I'll keep refreshing and answer any questions if this needs any clarification. It does seem a little complicated. A bit easier on table-top.

Friday July 25th, 2008 12:01:00 AM

Confusion reigns as the bandits surge forward. Fatine holds her ground and gyrates her little wooden dolls while casting her spell. The half-orc intercepted by Anrete seems befuddled and fails to attack, instead he fumbles with his bastard sword and struggles to curse the wild eyed barbarian that confronts him. All he manages to do is drool. [R2 fails save and is confused for 1 rnd]

Keela also rides forward into the fray. A cone of pulsating coloured lights shoots from her hands and envelops the two half-elf bandits. They raise their hands to sheild their eyes but cannot escape the dizzying effect. They both slump in their saddles and fall from their mounts, hitting the ground awkwardly [R3 & R4 fail their saves and fall unconcious from their horses]

Beren, concerned for his comrades, reverses his course and rides to the crest. He pushes Red hard to make the top and in doing so fails in his aim. His arrow flies wide. [Beren's adjusted Atk roll is in the negatives due to -4 penalty for shooting into melee w/o precise shot feat, -4 penalty for shooting while mounted on a horse making a double movement w/o mounted archery feat, and -2 for partial cover as the PHB states that the attack occurs 1/2 way through movement and Anrete would be partially blocking the shot - I encourage everyone to read up on mounted combat PHB p. 157]

Caelnin manouvres his horse into position some 20 feet from Anrete's babbling opponent and lets fly with a single precise shot. The arrow buries itself into the half-orc's shoulder, leaving the ugly brute even more confused than before. [Caelnin's horse made a single move and he has the precise shot feat]

Anrete capitalizes on the situation and spurs Copper into action. The pony lashes out at the rider, it's flailing hooves ripping into the bandit's leg. Anrete tries to jab with his lance, but finds himself too close to his opponent to swing the long weapon into action. [OOC Lance is a reach weapon and you must be 10' from your opponent].

[OOC Ignore my D20+6...forgot R2 was confused Nat 1 on atk anyway]

Alexi continues down the hill and then spins and closes the trap on the two charging half-elves...only they aren't there. He is no doubt surprised to see them both lying unconcious on the ground as their horse run past. Mikal must be equally amused. [OOC Ride-by-Attack requires a charge movement which depends on a straight line and unobstructed path. I don't think you can ride down the hill, spin, and then ride back up the hill in a charge as part of a single move.]

Jet sees none of this as he has already made his decision to find and stop the leader. He estimates, based on his brief observations from atop the crest, that the lone rider who pointed out their group was at least 200 ft down the other side and that the wagons were at least another 400 feet beyond the rider at the bottom of the valley. How far he will need to go depends on how far he is willing to circumnavigate the hill to gain the element of surprise.

The last half-orc, regains his feet and begins running up the hill towards Fatine, drawing his bastard sword as he moves. He charges forward, unaware of the fate of his fellow bandits and not wanting to miss out on the battle .

OOC: your adjudication on the charge is fine by me. I guess Charge is a full-round action, even if you only need 10 feet to start. For the most part, I was just quessing on the timing.

IC: Alexi, looking over his shoulder one last time before spinning around to face the riders sees a flash of colors but doesn't have the time to see the effects. Fearing for Keela, he spins Lobo around and starts back only to find the two riders tumbling down hill and the two horses galloping past him.

"Shish!" he exclaims. "I'm not going to get anyone again?" But Anrete is facing a half-orc and who knows how Jet is faring.

"Mikal!" he yells. "See to it that these don't get up! Tie them up or something! Be quick! There's not much time!"

OOC: Unless going uphill is 'difficult terrain' I calculated that S15 is exactly 70 feet, a double move for Lobo w/chain barding. A string held to the monitor showed Mikal close, but not quite obstructing the path. S15 is 10 feet from R2 but a lance has 10 foot reach, so he should be able to squewer R2, provided he doesn't miss.

IC: Alexi spurs Lobo into a charge but Lobo seemed a little disoriented by the two horses plunging by and Alexi grabs the reins with his shield hand and heads straight for R2. Even though Lobo labours uphill, the massive strength of the warhorse brings Alexi's lance smack into the half-orc.

Beren guides Red along the ridgeline, takes careful aim, and looses an arrow into the half-orc's side. Fatine shrugs the net from across her shoulders and hurls it at the same half-orc, but she has misjudged the distance and it falls to the ground in front of her. [OOC max range of a net is 10 ft]

The half-orc's sneer of contempt is cut short by the two dogs bearing down on him. He sidesteps the first, but the second cur rips into his leg. He yells out in orcish.

On the other side of the hill Anrete manoeuvres his horse and brings his lance to bear on the remaining rider. The half-orc has regained some of his senses and easily eludes Anrete's thrust. In doing so he opens himself to Caelnin's sights. The arrow takes him from close range, penetrating through the chain and emerging through the other side of his torso. The damage is massive and the half-orc slides from the saddle into a heap at the hooves of his mount.

Alexi barks orders to Mikal and charges up the hill, just in time to see Caelnin's fatal strike. Once again he is foiled by the actions of his comrades.

Jet continues making his way around the hill and into a position he believes will allow him the best chance of victory. He ponders the difficulties of leadership as he guides his horse below the crest of the hill.

The remaining half-orc, dismounted, pierced by arrows and deluged by Fatine's hounds, defends himself. He lashes out with his bastard sword at the cur that wounded him. The blade flashes in a powerful two-handed blow, slicing across the dog and sweeping it aside. The dog falls in a bloody heap as the bandit considers his next option. [Hit AC=19 for 14 HP].

Prayer in elfish. Curse in orcish.

The soul of Fatine's dog will follow those of the brave. For the half-orc, Beren spits. As great as is the burning need to plant an arrow into its chest, the duty is to the wagons.

"Heeya, Red." With a nudge of his knees, the ranger directs his mount into an easy canter down the slope. He raises his bow high and gives a whoop of war as he reins Red to a stop, then sends an arrow arcing through the air at the leader of the bandits below.

Wind, send a message to my enemy.

Beren watches as the shaft flies under the sky. Close enough to cause the leader of the bandits to dodge. Close enough to make him turn. Close enough to make him watch, as Beren's companions come swarming over the hill to overwhelm the half-orc and cut it down.

Fatine's second hound crouches and growls at the half-orc, waiting for an opportunity that will never come, for Alexi astride Lobo charges down on the hapless bandit and runs him through with his lance. Alexi drives the weapons deep into the half-orcs chest, expunging all life in an instant. Fatine can only stand by, horrified at the sight of her downed pet.

Keela follows in Jet's path, keeping below the crest of the hill, hoping to catch up with the group's standard bearer. Beren sends a single arrow from atop the ridge in the general direction of the lone rider that had singled them out earlier. The arrow strikes the ground before the riders horse and does indeed draw his attention, as does the sight of Alexi, Fatine, and Caelnin who are now all visible against the skyline. The lone rider calls out to the bandits closest to him and points at the hilltop. Two of the riders form up on him.

Caelnin scans the scene below him. The wagon train is strung out along the valley bottom. Three of the wagons have been overturned and are alight, sending thick plumes of smoke skyward. Settlers scurry like ants below, beating out flames with blankets, wielding spears in defensive postures, and a few have found bows and are doing their best to keep the enemy at bay. The security forces are outnumbered and several appear to have been cut down. An INT vs DC 15 reveals Highlight to display spoiler: { that the bandits near the front of the wagon train appear content to keep the security forces pinned down, whilst those at the rear seem to be engaged at much closer quarter }. Signalling its companion to stay close to her, the witch mounts up and calls Keela to join her. The young farm woman struggles a little with Daisy, eventually regaining control of the reins and directing the horse to follow those of the scouting party who have left in support of the group leader.

Beren astride Red flows over the crest sending an angry messenger towards the enemy. The arrow whistles by, threatening one of the flanking bandits. Wheeling his horse around, the masked ranger taunts the enemy in an attempt to create a distraction, and lure the trio up the hill.

As Jet 'rounds the base of the hill and comes up behind the one directing the assault, Alexi astride Lobo comes pounding over and around the crest of the hill, heading straight for the enemy threesome.

As he readies his bow, Caelnin's vantage point allows him to see Anrete not far behind Jet. Distracted by Beren and Alexi the bandits are oblivious to the cleric/fighter and barbarian behind them.

Mikal busies himself with trussing up an unconscious half-elf. The two bandits remain unconscious and offer no resistance. Mikal manages to get rope wrapped around the first half-elfs legs [ OOC it takes 1 minute to bind a captive]

The boy's two companions attempt to repel the assailant with short pointed sticks. Another bandit slices at the vegetation that has wrapped about his boots. A woman is dragged down from the box of a wagon. Those with a vantage point on the hillside recognize the crush is most pressing around the wagon of the herbalist. A misty vapour starts to rise, threatening to obscure some of the wagons from view. It is impossible to tell who is responsible for the mist.

By way of explanation...the R's, S's and X's are all NPC 'bad guys' attacking the caravan. The X's clustered around the herbalist's wagon.

From last two DM posts...

The bandits near the front of the wagon train appear content to keep the security forces pinned down, whilst those at the rear seem to be engaged at much closer quarter.

****

Those with a vantage point on the hillside recognize the crush is most pressing around the wagon of the herbalist.

The map is an overview, and does not include the close to 200 settlers. More detailed maps when combat is at close quarters. These will include NPC's. At this point, you can safely assume that all 'good' NPC's are with their wagons, and not in the way of your actions.

As she moves along the crest of the hill, she points the wand at the leader of the raiders. "Projecto!" she cries, and a pebble of glowing energy leaps from the tip of the wand, striking the leader.

[Actions: Move to C-24 (double move for the horse). Pull out Wand of Magic Missiles while moving. Shoot a Magic Missile at the bandit leader for 3 damage.]

The party sweeps down the hillside resolved to rescue the settlers of the rear most wagons. On their way, they swipe at the one providing some direction to the attackers, and the two riders flanking him. Caelnin's arrow pierces R2, while Keela's missile strikes R1 squarely in the chest. Alexi astride Lobo smashes into R3 with his lance.

Bantom brings his rider closer to the enemy. Close enough to see the one providing direction, Jet dismounts and casts a spell that causes him to grow in stature and girth.

Comprehending the dire situation of the rear most wagons Beren and Fatine focus their attention on the herbalist's wagon. The elven ranger sends a warning arrow at one of the bandits S7, but misses. S7 turns to look back, draws a potion from his belt and quaffs it.

His attention drawn to the returning security detail, S5 turns his horse and rides up towards Anrete loosing an arrow at the barbarian (Ride check vs 23, Hit AC 13 (Oops!not 19. DM forgot -4 for shooting during double move and -2 range increment(see DM die rolls)-miss.)

R2 (a half elf in studded leather) also fires an arrow. His target is Caelnen, but he misses. A badly wounded R3 (half elf in studded leather) pulls a short sword, moves 5 ft. towards the Fist, ducking underneath the lance and slashes Alexi (Hit AC 24, threat not confirmed for 3 HP dmg.) ( OOC: 5 ft move does not result in an attack of opportunity). The lean, swarthy human dressed in chain shirt, a buckler on his arm (R1) turns in his saddle, knocks a single arrow, and fires at the mage, wounding Keela (Hit AC 21, for 2 pts dmg. (Range increment accounted for.)

Mikal continues binding one of the unconscious bandits, wondering if he shouldn't be joining his companions. While he is working with the rope, the other bandit begins to stir.

She is undaunted however. These raiders are attacking her friends and family.

Determined, she urges Daisy up next to Fatine. She'd like to give that leader another missile to think about, but she sees that Alexi's opponent is nearly down. Perhaps she can help. Pointing her wand, she again calls "Projecto!" and sends another missile flying.

Anrete charges towards the bandit (S5), but misses with his lance. Copper's hoof flashes, but at 10 ft. from the enemy, the war pony is unable to connect. (OOC: Lance is a reach weapon, therefore charge ends 10 ft. from enemy.) The enemy ducks under the barbarian's lance, closing to 5 ft. and strikes out with his short sword (Hit AC 15 (miss) ignore dmg roll above, my bad.) The bandit's horse attacks Copper, bruising and lacerating the pony with brutal hooves. (Hit AC 19 and 21 for 6+4=10 dmg.)

Keela sends another unerring missile at R3, who gets a glazed look over his face, and looks unsteady in his seat. Before the bandit can react, he is struck down and trampled beyond recognition by Alexi's horse. R1 turns on the fighter, but misses. However, the bandit's horse kicks out at Lobo, and slights the beast. (Hit AC 19, 4 dmg.) R2 makes a rude gesture at Caelnin as the archer's arrow falls short, then sends an arrow in the Fists direction, missing the lucky man. Meanwhile, Jet weaves magic upon his weapon.

Heading for the caravan, Beren sites S7. The rough looking female on horseback moves faster than one would think, and avoids his arrow. Fatine cuts in front of the ranger, and prepares one of her dolls, her dog fixes his master with a look, it's tongue lolling. The rider blinks and shakes her head (Will Save=15) as she closes on Fatine. The witch hears the whistle of the flashing blade as the sneering woman opposite slashes this way, then that with her long sword, and misses!

Mikal winds more rope around the unconscious bandit, while his companion moans and rubs at his unseeing eyes.

The fighting continues with a level of furiousity that the brave guardians of the caravan have not experienced before. Her spell having failed, Fatine retreats behind Beren. The elf's shot sails wide as the nasty looking female [S7] spurs her horse towards him. She swings twice with her longsword but to no avail [Hit AC= 13 & 16]. She curses her bad luck and calls for him to yeild!

Higher up the hill, Alexi is locked in combat with the swordsman he believes to be the leader[R1]. They exchange parries, Alexi with his lance, his opponent with a longsword [Hit AC= 11] . Neither hits, but the bandit does receive a nasty bite from Lobo, followed by one of Keela's missiles slamming into his back.

The bowman defending the 'leader' knocks another arrow and sends it streaking towards Caelnin. The arrow strikes the elf in the shoulder [Hit AC 26/1, Threat unconfirmed for 2 HP].

The bandit facing Jet and Anrete [S5] shows his own mettle and despite being wounded by Anrete's barbed lance, slides under the enlarged humans guard, stabbing at him with his shortsword [Hit AC=24/9 Threat unconfirmed for 6 HP].

The scene down by the wagons is utter chaos. The cries of frightened women and children carry up from the valley floor, and smoke billows from the three overturned wagons. A small boy darts out from beneath one of the upright wagons and stabs at a bandit with a makeshift spear. He appears to have been successful and ducks back behind cover.

Over the crest of the hill, Mikal continues binding the first of his captives. The second manages to sit up and looks over his shoulder to see the cleric at his work.

"Shucks! You make this easy!" Alexi exclaims as the bandit rider nicks him. Dropping his lance, he pulls out his new longsword, baptised by Wido's blood...."

The bandit (R3) had moved in and struck Alexi. Too close to use the lance, he dropped it and pulled out his MW longsword.

That was two rounds ago.

IC: The battle seems even and only a mistake or luck will change the ballance. Alexi hopes it is luck, on his part. He tries to focus his skills, but wielding a sword and guiding a horse takes a LOT of skill. But it does pay off as his sword nicks the bandit commander. Lobo chimes in as Alexi has him rear up flail with two hoof kicks and another bite. The bandit is clearly outmatched as he's not used to fighting a rider AND his horse as two hoofs clobber him!

The scouting party clears a way through to the caravan, sending several of the bandits to their doom.

Thought Anrete is thwarted, an enlarged Jet knocks his assailant off his horse, where Bantom ensures he will never rise again, trampling the enemy beyond recognition.

Alexi, wielding his long sword, ensures bandit S5 will have company on his voyage to the Shadowlands, as he and Lobo dispatch the half orc (R1) that had been harassing them.

Fatine hopes a little magic might slow down the brutal woman blocking her and Beren from getting to the herbalist. The woman's lids grow heavy (Will=15 (fail)), and she slumps in her saddle. As she falls from her seat, the ranger draws blood.

From his perch overlooking the combat, Caelnin is successful at targeting a bandit (R2) sticking him with his arrow.

Keela sends a Magic Missile where it will be most effective, striking the lone bandit (R2) now facing Alexi.

Figuring the odds are stacked against him, R2[Int=23] decides to make his get-away, leaving a clear path for the returning scouts to come to the aid of the settlers. Spurring his horse to a gallop, the bandit puts as much distance as he can between himself and the returning scouts.

The mist clears a little 'round the rear most wagons. It is clear the herbalist's wagon is a target for the bandits. It is only through the efforts of the settlers who have come to Tarketh's aid, and some magic performed by the druid himself, that the bandits are kept at bay.

He places his hand on his sword just in case.

Monday August 4th, 2008 12:13:47 PM

Fatine points at the bandits near Tarketh's wagon, then looks confusedly at her finger. Realizing that her arcane powers have been exhausted for the time being, she shrugs and spurs her horse toward the bandits. As she rides, she withdraws a vial from her pouch. After riding a short bit forward, she drinks the liquid in the vial.

As she drinks it, her body begins to convulse, swelling in some parts and shrinking in others. Her skin turns a brownish-grey, and her face stretches into an elongated, scaley snout. A tail springs forth from her hindquarters, startling her horse. In a matter of seconds, Fatine turns into a short, grey-scaled . . . thing. The horse rears and whinnies, but she pats it and calms it down. "Relax dere, horse. It still be ol' Fatine inside here." Her voice has taken on a rough, grating sound, somewhat like sandpaper rubbed on tree bark.

Actions: move 60' (1 move action for horse); remove potion as part of move action. Drink potion of alter self.

Jet sends a spear after the fleeing bandit. The weapon sails a little wide of the target, throwing up dirt and debris as it thuds into the hard ground. R2 never looks back as he spurs his horse over the ridge.

Moving cautiously, the party inventories remaining resources and figure their next moves. Fatine alters her appearance into something resembling a lizard with spindly but muscular arms and squat legs. (OOC: Moved Fatine 30 ft forward noting your amendment.) Alexi retrieves his lance. Caelnin swings across and behind the group into a closer, more supportive position.

Concern for her family spurs Keela forward, a blast from her wand an emissary warning the bandits the caravan is not unprotected. Keela and Fatine are close enough to see the bandits being fought off by the settlers, Wisdom Check 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { to realise the bandits have suffered wounds at the hands of the settlers defending the wagons, some more than others.}

The female bandit picks herself up from the hard ground, retrieving her sword as she rises [OOC Beren gets AoO]

To the front of the caravan, Garth (GT) and several of his chosen men (G1-G3) have managed to repel or kill a number of the bandits, and continue down the wagon train, engaging the enemy as they find them.

The rearmost wagons remain hidden from Garth and his compatriots by the smoke rising from the burning wagons. Tarketh, outnumbered by the bandits, continues to defend his wagon and it's contents.

Abandoning the partly bound bandit at his feet, Mikal pulls his weapon and warns the now conscious half-elf recovering from the colour-spray. Emboldened by the sight of only a single cleric to oppose him, the bandit rises and draws a shortsword [OOC Mikal gets an attack of opportunity]

Jet is upset that his spear would be deflected by armor or distance, he makes a mental note to retreave his thrown weapon later. He moves to J 26, for a better view of why fatine is so distraught. His movement is fast and strong. Obviously, he runs much faster then the typical warrior in heavy armor(Run Feat). He wonders where Mikal is and why he is not with the others, but he assumes, it's just one more order disobeyed by his companions.
Bantom, his faithful steed, stays by the warrior clerics side, just waiting to bite or stomp on something else.

Beren makes two swipes at the rugged female, barely missing the first time, and swinging quite wide with his second. Though the elf misses, the Fist does not. Alexi's lance does horrific damage to the bandit, but though bleeding profusely from the ugly wound, she is still standing.

The wounded bandit shouts, "Sethyr!", then attempts a tumble out from between her adversaries, and their mounts. ([Failed, Beren and Alexi get AofO vs S7). Quickly reaching for a potion, she attempts to quaff the brew.

Hearing her name called, Sethyr (S3) rides expertly towards Alexi and Beren. She thrusts her hand, palm out, in the direction of the fighter as she utters some ancient word. (Alexi Will Save vs DC 14. Fail and the fighter must flee at top speed in the opposite direction from S3. Pass, and Alexi is stunned for a single round. Cause Fear)

Caelnin and Jet continue to maneuver into position closer to their comrades and the beleaguered rear wagons.

Fatine in troglodyte form uses magic with acumen, once again overcoming an adversary. The bandit (X4) cries out as he drops his weapon, bringing his hands to his blinded eyes before falling unconscious!

A little damage can go a long way, as Keela proves. The bandit (X5) she targets screams in pain when her magic splashes him with acid. He seems worse off than her spell alone would account for, but not bad enough not to seek retaliation! The injured half-orc strikes out at the mounted woman with his sword (Hit AC 19, 13 pts. dmg.ouch!)

The bandits surrounding the rear most wagons are distracted by a loud roaring sound coming from inside Tarketh's enclosed wagon, which then begins to rock violently.

Meanwhile, back on the hill Mikal swings, connecting with the unbound half-elf. The bandit swings back at the cleric and misses, while his companion, who is also now conscious, struggles to loosen his ill tied bonds.

Alexi is surprized that the bandit he just lanced was a woman! But still a bandit, and atop Lobo, he easily sees her atempt to escape the trap between he and Beren. With a deft move he spears her again with his lance even as she cries out a name.

IF he had been able to think about what Fatine would say, he probably would be able to hold himself, but the fear that something behind him was so huge and hideous and was about to get him was so overwhelming he panicked and spurred Lobo forward, and had Beren not moved, he would have been trampled.

In the panic, Alexi's mind could only think of the nice, peacful camping spot they had located earlier. After galloping straight for a short distance, he swerved Lobo towards the crest of the hill and back towards the way they had come, and hopefully a nice place to hide.

Keela slumps unconscious, lying heavily against Daisy's thick neck. Her bright lifeblood stains the ground. The woman is not without friends, however, as Fatine intercedes. Luck is not on the troglodyte's side, however and the witches' magic fails her. The enemy pauses but a moment at the sight of the creature in front of him, before bringing his sword to bear [Hit AC 25/21 threat unconfirmed for 9 HP].

Beren misses the bandit, but she is not able to avoid Alexi. Before she can raise the vial to her lips, he runs her through with his lance, leaving her on the ground, bleeding profusely from her many wounds. Arriving too late to be of any help to her friend, Sethyr (S3) manages to strike fear in the breast of the Fist, and Alexi spurs his mount to effect a speedy getaway from the conflict.

Caelnin, Jet and Anrete attempt to distract the magic user, and the elf misses by a hair's breadth the fighter's spear sails wide of the woman and her mount. At close quarters the barbarian is equally unsuccessful. Neither are successful with their attempt to harm the woman, and she guides her horse back from immediate danger before casting her spell Cause Fear [Will save vs DC 14 to be stunned for 1 round, or run away for 2 rnds if save failed]

Caelnin watches as another arrow sails wide of it's target. Perhaps the wind lies at fault?

Jet charges the mage and her steed, swinging wildly with his enlarged sword, but the blade merely glances off the shimmering aura that seems to encompass the sorceress. She guides her horse away from the enlarged fighter and speaks in a twisted tongue, unfamiliar to Jet. A ray of brilliant, pulsating energy flows from her hand and briefly encapsulates him, draining him of strength. [Hit touch AC of 22 for 3 points of strength damage Ray of enfeeblement]

Anrete, shaken by the evil magic, regains his composure and charges down the hill to assist Fatine, however the lingering effects of the spell have spoiled his aim and he misses his intended victim. Fatine and her dog also attack the half-orc, but neither the troglodyte nor her cur is able to defeat the bandit's defences. Unnerved by the appearance of a new opponent, the half-orc abandons his attack on Fatine and swings at the barbarian who's maddened charge has left him exposed. The bastard sword slips beneath Anrete's guard and slices across his exposed side. Droplets of blood shower from the sword's blade as it continues it's arc through the air. [Hit AC=17 for 8 HP]

The half-orc looks over his shoulder towards the wagons and yells loudly in orcish Highlight to display spoiler: { "Hurry up you maggots! I can't hold them off much longer! Get that box and lets move!!" }

Beren remounts and looks for a clear shot with his trusty bow. [OOC Beren was not targeted by the fear spell and has his full faculties -- my apologies if the last post was confusing -- DM]

On the other side of the hill, Mikal finds himself isolated from his comrades. Left behind with instructions to bind the unconscious prisoners, he now faces one fully armed and ready swordsman and a second opponent struggling to free himself from the hastily tied bonds. Bleeding from one cut already, the cleric feels the burning sting of the blade once again [Hit AC=23 for 5 HP]

Alexi spurs his horse up the hill and away from the battle, the cold grip of fear crushing his spirit. As he nears the crest of the hill, he begins to come to his senses. The rising swell of panic subsides and the fighter realizes what he has done. [Alexi's fear lasted two rounds -- sorry, I should have stated that clearly]. From where he is, he can hear the clash of weapons from over the hill where the party had previously left the cleric and his bandit charges.

Back at the caravan, the enclosed wagon belonging to the herbalist rocks even more violently and a half-orc flies out from the open door and hits the ground sprawling, a large bloody wound on his shoulder. In his good arm he holds a wooden box roughly the size of a loaf of hard bread. The head of a large black bear emerges from the wagon, it's terrible canine teeth already blooded. The two remaining half-orcs (X1 and X3) move to intercede between the bear and their comrade.

Jet, does what he needs, to stay near the mage and kill her, despite her best efforts, he continues with the aggressive behavior.

First attack, if AoO is available hits AC 17 for 19 damage.

Bantom, watching the ray hit Jet, sees that it effects him in a negative manner trots forward and unleashes a barrage of attacks on the female. His first attack hits AC 17 for 10 damage. His second attack hits AC 26 with a natural 20, critical unconfirmed doing 10 more points of damage. He finishes off his attacks hitting AC 14, which is a miss.

Jet, if for some reason, he did not get an attack of opportunity can still make his full movement to S 33 before he swings his sword, this time with minuses. He swings wide, only able to hit AC 11.

If though, the other attacks, from his horse brings down the mage, Jet would make a full movement to Y 39.

Beren stays within range of the mage on horseback, training his arrows on the rider. His first arrow misses, but the second strikes the woman, causing her to yelp in pain. With grim determination, Jet does what he feels he must to bring down the woman. Her magical amour just manages to repel the enlarged human's weapon. Bantom trots forward, and takes his turn, but misses. (OOC: Bantom gets only one attack, as he would have to have moved more than 5 ft. also, a horses intelligence would not render it able to 'perceive' the effect of the Ray...only perhaps that it was an attack.)

Caelnin heads to the rescue of those engaged near the wagons. Shooting on the fly, he misses his target. He can see the fallen Keela, slumped unconscious in her saddle.

Fatine's dog proves his bite is worse than his bark, sinking sharp teeth into X5. Unfortunately, the troglodyte is all thumbs, and fails to trigger her wand.

Managing to avoid the witch, Anrete bears down on the half-orc with the box. (OOC: Anrete can not make the corner via H37 and charge. Charge is a full round action and the entire move must be in an unobstructed straigt line. Anrete, however, can make a double move and attack X6. As such, AC would be 17 vs 15). The barbarian impales the man, and the box flies a short distance and lands on the ground nearby.

The half-orc bandit (X5) takes a swipe at Anrete as he passes, (AoO: Hit AC 17, for 8 HP dmg.). Upon seeing his comrade impaled, he charges after the barbarian and viscously hacks at him, opening a large, deep, wound (Hit AC 20, for 10 HP dmg.)
(Stabilization roll required). (Fatine and Shadow, each get an AoO on X5 vs AC 15 because he is charging.)

The mage (S3) sees the box get fumbled, and spurs her horse towards the melee near the wagons. (No AoO.) X3 drops his weapon, and dives for the box, wrapping both arms around it. X1 places himself between his comrade and the bear, slashing at the creature and drawing blood. With a roar, the bear claws and bites at the half-orc who screams in pain.

Cresting the hill, Alexi has a clear view of Mikal facing off one adversary, while a second struggles with his bonds. He rides in close to the combatants, giving the one wielding a weapon a scare. Seeing that he is outnumbered, the bandit engaged with the cleric, darts for Mikal's mount. Grabbing the reigns, and manages to seat himself on the horse. (Handle Animal=17, Fast Mount=11 (fail) therefore mounting is a move action.) Mikal gets an AoO as the half-elf runs away. The horse is 15 ft. away.

Combat takes its toll on the party, as few are able to hit their marks. Beren succeeds, and another arrow gets past the female mage's magical amour. Regardless, the woman is able to keep her seat as she moves in closer to those who are fighting over the curious box taken from the herbalist's wagon.

Jet moves in closer to the unconscious and bleeding Keela, while Caelnen maneuvers to get a better fix on the enemy magiker. While brandishing an ineffective stick, Fatine takes a step back, while Shadow follows snapping sharp white teeth at the bandit Not far away, Anrete slumps across Copper's neck, his blood staining the pony's coat with a deeper red.

Up on the hill, Mikal gives the half-elf bandit further impetus to make his escape. The bandit avoids Alexi, and spurs the cleric's horse in the opposite direction from the embattled caravan. The remaining bandit holds out his hands, still bound together. "I'm not goin' nowhere," he volunteers, eyes round at the sight of the armed fighter on horseback, and the cleric with blood stained sword. (OOC: It will take 3 rounds to reach the caravan on horseback.)

The deadly half orc (X5) moves in to defend his comrades from the bear, takes a slash and misses. His comrade (X1) fares better and opens another wicked gash in the bear's hide. The prone bandit (X3) gets to his feet, cradling the box in his arms and runs past the wagons towards a waiting horse.

The embattled sorcerer (S3) draws a stick from her belt and a small bolt of energy flies towards Beren (Magic Missile 3 HP dmg.). Yanking hard on the reigns, she directs her horse towards the bandit with the box.

Roaring in pain, the bear retaliates against his aggressors savagely mauling X5.

Sorry to butt in here, but while I'm luring, I might as well be useful.

Heal Skill:

First Aid: You usually use first aid to save a dying character. If a character has negative hit points and is losing hit points (at the rate of 1 per round, 1 per hour, or 1 per day), you can make him or her stable. A stable character regains no hit points but stops losing them.

This also requires a DC15 Heal check.

Actions in Combat:

Table: Standard Actions
Make a dying friend stable (see Heal skill)

So, using First Aid to stabilize a PC is a Standard Action.

Using a cure spell, for example, Cure Minor Wounds, is also a Standard Action.

Yet he hears Fatine call out a warning to kill the bandit, and turns to see him running for a horse with the box in hand. Spinning slightly, Beren lets loose an arrow at him (X3). Cursing yet again as his arrow flies way off the mark.

Hopefully the man drops, and he can return his attention and vengeance upon the witch.

With one half-elf bandit chased off, Mikal turns on the remaining bandit. Now tied only at the wrists, the half-elf struggles to his knees. "I won't move, 'less you tell me to!" the prisoner cries, looking from the cleric to the angry mounted fighter. Ordering the cleric to return to the caravan with his prisoner, Alexi then spurs his mount to action, and heads back over the crest, and down the slope, anxious as to the fate of his companions. (OOC: 2 more rounds to reach caravan. Don't worry about position on the map.)

Jet stabilizes the bleeding Keela, just possibly saving the young woman's life. A little further off, Anrete slumped in his saddle and his life blood ebbing, senses Gargul's eye upon him.

Caelnin targets the mage (S3) and misses, while Beren overcomes the urge to kill the magiker who wounded him. He heeds Fatine's call, and targets the half-orc fleeing with the box. The ranger's first arrow misses, but the second pierces the X3 through causing a considerable amount of bleeding. The bandit can not survive another such attack! Fortunate for him the witch misses.

Grabbing the pommel of his saddle the half-orc with the box attempts to mount his horse. With one arm wrapped around the wooden box, and a serious wound, it is an awkward manoeuvre; however he is able to haul himself up into the saddle. He then shoves the box into one of the bags hanging from his saddle.

Trapped against a wagon by the bear, X1 slashes at the druid in animal form, wounding him again. The severely wounded bear slashes out angrily, but misses in all his attempts!

Getting the feeling she is being hemmed in, the sorcer (S3) points her wand at Caelnin sending a bead of magical energy in the elf's direction. (3 HP Magic Missile dmg.) She tries to direct her mount closer to the half-orc with the box, but the horse resists, bucking its head at the rough jerking of the reigns.

Glad that the witch has her attention elsewhere, Beren looks to see if this time his arrows did the job as he spurs Red towards the horse with the box in the saddlebag.

The words Alexi tells him do not sound good. If there are injured in need of help, he will make it.

He prods the man slightly with his sword and says simply "Walk"

OOC: Once again, readied action if the man attempts to break free I'll strike.

If the half-orc does not fall:

Fatine points at the bandit holding the box and commands Shadow to attack. The dog snarls and leaps forward, finally succeeding in biting into the half-orc's arm. (If THAT makes him fall) Fatine steps forward and grabs the box from him.

DM Bob & Carla
Wednesday August 13th, 2008 11:32:03 PM

Just when things appeared their darkest, the fortunes of battle chang and the party found themselves with the upper hand. Caelnin's arrow buries itself deep inside the chest of the sorceress just as she is about to cast another spell, and Beren manages to pluck the half-orc from his mount just as he is preparing to flee. Upon witnessing the fall of their leader, the remaining bandits harassing the front of the caravan spur their horses away from the wagons and flee. The sole remaining half-orc takes one last scan of his surroundings and flees on foot, putting as much distance between himself and the bloodied bear as possible. Alexi charges over the hill just as the situation appears to be resolving, while Mikal escorts his partly bound prisoner back to the wagons at the point of a sword.

Keela remains unconcious, but the worst of the bleeding has stopped, the same however cannot be said for Anrete who continues to profusely. Jet readies to administer some aid to the badly wounded barbarian. Heal Check vs DC 15 to stabilize Highlight to display spoiler: { and to recall that barbarians who have been enraged lose their additional HP when their rage ends }.

Fatine and Shadow approach the half-orc's mount to rescue Tarketh's box from the saddlebags, but in her present form the witch easily spooks the horse. [Handle animal vs DC 12 to calm the horse sufficiently to retrieve the box.]

Tarketh shifts back from his form as a bear and once again takes the shape of a human. He is severely wounded but mobile, and makes his way around the wagons towards Fatine.

Handle Animal 25 (NOW I roll nicely...)

Approaching the bandit's horse, Fatine initially startles the beast, but quickly calms it with some quiet shushing and calm strokes of her hand on its thick mane. Once the horse is settled, she reaches out, unhooks the saddlebag and takes the box out. Holding it tight against her scaley chest, she turns and rushes it to Tarketh.

"Here, Darketh," she rasps. "Fatine be sorry I no help you quicker, boss," she adds while staring at the ground.

Once we are out of combat rounds:
Fatine waits for the alter self to wear off, then tries to look over Tarketh's wounds, but isn't much help. [heal 11] She comandeers two farmers and heads back up the hill, collects her net (which is wrapped once again around her arms like a shawl), and has the farmers carry Cloud down to Tarketh's wagon. She finds some space to lay the dog out and let it recuperate.

Alexi will shout for the bandit to surrender as soon as he's within striking distance. If the bandit doesn't, Alexi will run him through. If he does, Alexi will escort him back to the caravan, and Tarketh.

OOC: If Alexi needs to, he can Spur his horse (x3 speed) to catch up with the bandit. Since there isn't much vegetation to impede a mounted rider, Alexi should catch up with him quickly.

"We are not done here guys!!" He shouts. "Check on the remaining noncombatants! Make sure they are not bleeding to death either. Then, extinguish those flames on the wagons. Throw dirt on them and smother the fire!"

As Jet binds the wounds of Anrete, the man becomes conscious and it is clear, he is still in a rage. "It's all right friend." he is assured and helped down off his mount. "Here lie down on the ground so you don't fall and let your rage go, your in good hands."

Jet pulls out his healing kit, to assist for when Anrete goes unconscious again.

Thanks to the healing kit, it is just enough to take care of the again, unconcious barbarian.

OOC--Thanks to Kelly for posting for me this week

After searching the sorceress, Beren follows the advice of his companions and begins seeing to those injured in the battle. (spot 26 listen 27). He sees the lone half-orc running away, and has to control his rage to keep from going in pursuit himself. He sees that Alexi is already taking care of that chore. He will move from wagon to wagon doing what he can to help.

Fatine manages to calm the bandit's horse and retrieve the box stuffed inside the saddle bag. She returns it to the herbalist with her apologies, but the druid waves off her regrets. "You have done well my little one" he rasps. He takes the box from her outstretched arms, obviously relieved to have it in his posession once again. "See to your friends and the others, I will be fine." Two of the farmers help the witch to carry her dog back down the hill. They are wary of her and follow her instructions to the letter. Perhaps they think she might turn them into troglodytes as well.

Jet administers to Anrete who regains conciousness but remains gravely wounded. The standard bearer begins orchestrating the recovery effort, and soon Beren, Caelnin, and the others are identifying the wounded, dousing flames, and ensuring that the dead bandits that litter the ground are indeed dead. Beren searches the dead sorceress and finds a pair of bracers, a wooden stick 10" in length, 2 small vials, and 2 rolled parchments. A well crafted dagger is tucked in her belt.

Alexi chases down the last bandit who tries in vain to fend off the former fist. The half-orc stands little chance against Alexi and his steed and meets a rapid end at the end of Alexi's lance.

Mikal appears over the crest of the hill, escorting a single prisoner, loosely bound and dragging a long coil of rope behind him. The cleric and his prisoner must pick their way across the field of battle and the corpses that lie scattered across it. He cannot help but notice Keela's unconcious form lying in the trampled grass.

Garth Turnbuckle appears through the smoke, his arm loosley bandaged, a testament to his own trials in this affair. "A good thing you returned when you did" he slaps Beren across the back. "Not sure we would have prevailed in yer absence!" He speaks loudly so that all hear his praise of the party. The wagon master turns his attention to the disorder of the overturned wagons and wounded settlers. A few barked commands and several more men appear to help in the clean up.

MIkal finishes binding the prisoner. Satisfied with the quick job he gave the knots, he leaves the man within sight range of any that may be paying attention.

He then ignores his bleeding wound and rushes to Keela on the ground. He quickly bandages her up the best he can and casts a healing spell. His hands glowing blue as he mutters a prayer of peace to Alemi. (CLW 9HP, 16 on the heal check. Sorry it was rolled after). After he is sure her wounds are mended enough for her to live, he rushes over to Anrete that seems to be slumped over by his lance.

Mikal quickly bandages up Anrete and casts another healing spell, his hands glowing slightly softer this time.(26 Heal check, CLW healed for 5 damage)

After all his work is done, Mikal exaustedly bandages up his wound and finds a nice patch of grass to lie down on for a minute.

He remembers something the High priest used to say. "Mikal m'boy, a healer's rest is only but a moment."

Mikal says the words out loud and lies there.

OOC:

I thought I'd make up for my usual small posts by adding a little extra today. Havn't had the gusto lately to be long winded. Well there you are, Anrete and Keela should be able to live on, and Mikal shouldn't be bleeding anymore yay healbot!

Keela [hp 2/12]
Saturday August 16th, 2008 1:29:12 PM

Warm, healing energy flows into her. Keela awakens with a gasp and a start. She scrambles to her feet, spell components at the ready...only to find the battle over and only the wrapping-up to be done.

Glancing over, she sees Mikal's prisoner. Wanting to be useful, she snatches up her wand and points it at him. "Come this way, please," she says, trying to sound stern. "I know how to use this."

As best she can, she marches the prisoner back toward the wagon train.

Saturday August 16th, 2008 6:58:24 PM

Alexi flops the body of the half-orc on Lobo's rump and heads back to camp.
Seeing Keela taking charge of the prisoner he is greately relieved that she is all right and is quite impressed. "My, she's grown!" he smiles.
He checks on all his other friends also and is relieved that everyone has come through, banged up, but alive.

He then helps in the clean-up: dowsing fires, calming people, and whatever else. He tells Garth about the campsite further down the path.

With the help of Ned, he will gather farmers with shovels together to bury the enemy once all their gear worth anything has been collected.

As far as burying any of the caravan members, he figures a proper ceremony would be in order, and a different, more peaceful place, would be more appropriate.

Caelnin AC:16 HP:11/16
Saturday August 16th, 2008 8:49:06 PM

Glad that the battle is now properly over, Caelnin tries to make himself a bit more useful and goes around checking if people are okay. On the side he looks for people that he knows to see if they look alright.

He will go out of his way to help injured travelers, even more so for his friends.

Jet remains quiet, almost brooding, as they work to regain the caravans momentum.

He never expected the innocents to be attacked and wonders how the large pack of bandits could have escaped the notice of the scouts.

"Don't waste your energy on burying the enemy." Jet tells those cleaning up the area. "The crows have to eat too, same as the maggots."

DM Bob & Carla
Sunday August 17th, 2008 11:30:50 PM

Slowly a sense of order returns to the wagon train. Garth and his men begin the gruesome task of enumerating the dead. Calenin accompanies them and assists with the wounded, but in time, the wagonmaster and his men account for 19 dead bandits and 14 settlers, including 6 that Alexi and Jet recognize from the other security details. Including Mikal's prisoner, now guarded by Keela, there are three captured bandits, There might have been more but Krol, the half-orc that is Garths' assistant, dispatched several wounded bandits before Garth could call him off.

Tarketh remains by his wagon. Wounded and exhausted from his exertions, the herbalist maintains a close watch on his precious box . Fatine remains by his side, while Jet sees to Anrete.

Alexi and Beren assist where they can, and the former Fist spends some additional time gathering up weapons, horses and other belongings of the dead bandits.

The three prisoners maintain a wary silence as they observe the bodies of the settlers and bandits alike being lined up alongside the wagon train.

[OOC - next week or two can be spent asking questions, getting the wagon train re-constituted, and submitting character sheets - remember to roll HP for new levels on the LnB!!]

Beren continues his attempts to help clean up after the battle. When all are cared for, he will seek healing himself. He focuses at least part of his time in looking for serviceable arrows among the dead and captured bandits, as he has seriously depleted his supply in this battle. Alexi (AC: 17, HP:22/25) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37)
Monday August 18th, 2008 1:02:32 PM

Alexi reluctantly agrees with Jet concerning burying the dead enemy. Primarily because of the time it would take and the need to be moving on to the good campsite as soon as possible.

Gathering up the loose hosres, Alexi sends a couple of farmers over the hill to gather up the loose ones there as well and appologizes to Mikal again for not being able to stop the bandit from stealing his horse. "Hopefully, whatever you may have lost, we can make up with what we've gathered here," he tries to console the cleric.

Alexi approaches Garth and asks, "Do you know anything about these bandits? They seemed to have converged on Targeth's wagon. Do you recognize any of them?" pointing out the fallen leaders. "Which way did they come from?"

Alexi asks Beren, and Anrete if he's up to it, to locate tracks and follow them for a little while to see from what direction they had come. "Perhaps their main camp is near. We want to make sure they don't regroup and try something again."

Caelnin AC:16 HP:11/16
Monday August 18th, 2008 4:50:32 PM

Caelnin feels sorry for the people that have died in the unnecessary battle. Maybe if he were keeping watch a little bit better they could've diffused it before it happened.

However, what ever has been done, has been done. He keeps looking for his friends, especially Vilria, the mule. "She would be frightened, and I'm not sure what she would do...." Caelnin mutters.

His heart hardened on what has happened, he prays that Keelas family is alright, but sets himself for the worst. Every innocent that has died today was family to someone and these sons of mothers with no husbands will soon know the wrath of those that seek justice.

Waking up to see the cleric hovering over him, Anrete grunts a word thanks (he thinks) as he moves off to look upon his wounded mare, Copper. And after tending to both his mount and weapons, the barbarian strides towards the druid's wagon, pounding loudly on the harden wood.

"Tarketh, I believe there is something you like to tell us?"

Copper neighs obediently in agreement at Anrete's words.
