The Creeping Death
A Summons to Doom

A Plague on All Your Houses (DM Cayzle)
Tuesday July 29th, 2008 12:10:41 PM

Xenia, resolved to track down the recent doings of the nefarious Lord Perimon visits the Circle of the Alder. Wynn joins her. The druids there welcome them, but seem very busy. Many citizens have come to the Circle for healing and blessings. One druid recognizes Wynn and takes a moment to share some news. He says to the bard, "Mostly we are just seeing sniffles and fearfulness, thanks be to Mother Wold. The worst is yet to come, if tales be true. Many nobles and those who can afford it have fled -- Lord Perimon among them, I heard. They are fearful too."

Then one patient comes in with tiny dark spots on his fingertips, and several druids whisk him away. There is hardly anyone free to chat at all.

Belkior stays at home, training and exercising. (Other answers went out in e-mail.)

Theo pays a visit to two interesting places: Certified Curios and the Tower of Timelessness. The former, it seems, is under new management, per a small sign on a counter. The new shopkeeper is happy to have a potential customer. "Welcome! Welcome!" he tells Theo. "A mage, I would judge, and I am sure we have goods that would interest you." The shop is an odd mix of books on obscure topics; spell components; minor magic items (at generally higher prices than the Catacombs charges); crystal paperweights; locking puzzle boxes; manacles sized for creatures both tiny and large, in both silver and cold iron; mechanical toys; water clocks; telescopes and spyglasses; a slingshot launcher for vials such as alchemical fire and holy water, unfortunately in need of repair; and more.

"Perhaps the young mage would be interested in my selection of gently used wands?" the shopkeeper says. He has wands of Minor Image, Shrink Item, and Obscuring Mist, each with fewer than the 50 standard charges. He tells Theo that he sold a wand of Protection from Evil and another of Shield just yesterday. "The market for defensive items is quite brisk recently. I'm also sold out of holy water."

The Tower of Timelessness is "Closed For The Duration" -- according to a sign on the door.

Syr makes his way to the offices of Shield Construction. [OOC: Has it been three months that the PCs have been away? Or more like five weeks, as I guessed in my recent e-mail? Let's split the difference and call it eight weeks, or two months. Fair enough?]

As he goes over recent accounts, Syr realizes that there has been a slowdown. Dotta tells him that more workers have been calling off sick than usual; and it is getting worse. She thinks that some people are just holed up scared of the plague rumors that have been going around.

==========

But at the end of the day, it is time to shrug off the worries of the Wold and to have fun! Florin has arranged a special party at the Giggling Ghost for Ivy and their friends. The evening brings feasting, dancing, and music. Ivy only has eyes for Florin.

Aside from the party, the crowd at the tavern is smaller than usual. Mostly adventuring folk from outside the Float.

Toward the end of the evening, a well-dressed man enters and looks around. He addresses Syr, asking for a moment of time with the Crimson Shields of Hope. He is a minor noble and a messenger from the Overlord. The party's presence at the Palace is requested in the second hour after dawn.

The nobleman adds that perhas it would be best to prepare and ready whatever defenses you have against disease and the undead.

Theodore & Macaw (arcane sight, comprehend languages, darkvision, see invisibility, tongues)
Tuesday July 29th, 2008 3:28:15 PM

Theodore oohs and ahhs over various knick-knacks within the Curios Shop.

"Indeed you have many interesting items, Shopkeep." He frowns then. "Well, that's not very polite of me. I have to apologize. My name is Theodore. And what might yours be?"

As the shopkeep continues to show him about, Theodore nods where appropriate. "And how many charges does this one have left?" He taps the minor image wand. "How much?"

"Worms?" asks Macaw from his cowboy hat perch. "Magic worms?" The raven gives a shifty-eyed look around the room like he might filch something if given the chance.

Later at the party, Theodore takes the time to introduce himself to folks. Being his first time in the city, he feels the need to make a good impression. He drinks no alcohol, but eats heartily and seems to be having a good time.

When the messenger arrives, Theodore's smile quickly disappears. When the messenger leaves, the wizard approaches Syr.

"Trouble, no doubt. Who is the Overlord, by the by?"

"Coward," she mutters under her breath. "Fram jamming coward. Figures he'd run out." A cloud comes over Xenia and she falls into her discontented and frowny face.

Remind me to check at the City Office, Wynn, she thinks as she and her guy step from the door of Alder House and into the streets of Gold Level. Wanna see if Perimon's still got any holdings on the Float. Anything we can take from him.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Don't upstage the guest of honor at her own party. One of those things that most girls got the sense for. So, instead of the beautiful silk dress that Xenia bought in which to meet Wynn's mom, she opts for the more subdued crisp white cotton blouse with long charcoal skirt and matching waist-jacket. The pearl clips on her ears accent the outfit along with the gold pinky-ring with the malachite stone.

"Hi, I'm Xenia." Instead of her signature hand wave, the rogue takes Ivy's hand. "Alexandria Merryman Next. But call me Xenia. I hear you're from Cinnamon Valley too," she says to the human girl. "You'll have to tell me all about it."

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"The Overlord runs Floating City, Theo." Xenia, typically pushy, answers the question instead. "'Member the tour? The big palace in the center of Open Level? That's where she lives. I wasn't here when they chose this one what's the Overlord, but I hear both Overlord and Underlord get chosen."

"If she's calling for us, this must be a big thing. Must be different than the Greenie Disease what come from the Crying Woods, don'cha think, Belkie?"

"Belkie knows everything 'bout diseases and healing and stuff, Theo. He's our guy for pertection from that."

Extra Post to get us moving into the module proper ...

The shopkeeper smiles at Theo and introduces himself as "Georg." But the twinkle in his eye leads Theo to suspect that just maybe his leg is being pulled. Still, that's the name he gives.

The Minor Image wand has 15 charges left, and costs 300 gold pieces. It is fashioned of ash with small studs of tin and bone.

Syr - Sub/Al

"Please tell the Overlord that we'll be there," Syr says in reply to the summons. The news puts the elfish monk into a subdued and quiet mood for the rest of the evening. This must be the same thing that has his employees scared. Whatever it is, it is not only effecting his business, it's effecting his people.

"That's right," Syr nods to Xenia's description of things. "I'm not sure what's going on, but the Overlord doesn't call on anyone lightly. It's an honor, and hopefully it's one that we can live up to."

The halfling cleric finishes his devotions and exercise before going in search of the others. After asking at the business operated by Syr, Belkior has the frustrating experience of never quite being in the right place at the correct time. However, as he trails the others about the Floating City, Belkior hears of the plague and may see some sufferers himself. Of course, once he does, Belkior quickly moves towards the nearest Temple of Alemi to see if he can lend any assistance.

Once there, Belkior can more closely the disease while he is assisting with the priests. Something about it seems familiar, as if he had hard rumours of it before. In fact, Belkior is certain that he knows virtually everything that there is to learn about the disease. Once he is certain, the Paragon shares this information with the other healers in the Temple.
Heal = 45 (natural 20)

After a long day of helping with the sick, Belkior will go to the Giggling Ghost to attend the party for the newcomers. While he is tired and concerned about the populace of Floating City, he is also confident that his identification and information will be of assistance to the other healers in the City. Still, the halfling is subdued when he comes into the Ghost and makes his way to the table.

"Hello, everyone. Have you heard of this palgue that seems to be striking people in Floating City?"

Once he greeted the others, Belkior will share whatever he knows with them.

Harley

Harely spends alot of time at the catacombs. Some of it is due to slow help and some of it is due to his indecision on what to buy. He does, however, make it to the party at the Giggling Ghost. What a wonderful establishment he thinks. The mood is broken when the overlords messenger shows up. It downright sours when the messenger mentions undead and disease.

After the messenger has left he says, "I am buying supplies at the catacombs. Any suggestions on what to buy to help us agaianst undead and disease?"

Harley heads back to the catacombs to adjust his order.

A Note From A Lady (DM Cayzle)
Thursday July 31st, 2008 6:48:58 AM

Wynn spends the day searching for answers about this plague. He hears that it is called Zombietouch and The Creeping Death. But there is clearly a lot of conflicting info out there. Is it coughing and sneezing? Aches and pains? Pox and spots? Falling down asleep? No one seems to know for sure.

Similarly, although there are people Wynn talks to who know people who have it, he actually finds no one suffering from the disease. Wynn deduces, however, that if he wants to find sufferers, a good bet would be the Trash Level.

Belkior also seeks to learn more, but finds that there is little to learn. This is certainly a new thing, not found in any of the old healers' lore. The Temple of Alemi has sent a few brave healers to the Trash Level, and some have come back. One of these describes to Belkior that the illness starts with a rash of dark spots on the extremities and a sleepy feeling. This early stage may last a while, and at this time, the healer believes, is very contagious.

In the evening, Syr communicates to the envoy that the Crimson Shields will be there at the appointed hour -- the second hour after dawn.

Theo asks who the Overlord is, and Xenia answers. Syr points out that it is ah honor to be called to see her.

Harley asks if anyone needs anything from the Catacombs. He has been and will be spending time there.

After the party, another messenger arrives, with a note addressed to Syr and the Crimson Shields. It is from the Lady Firiona, a noble at court who once hosted a fund-raiser for the orphanage. Syr will certainly remember her. She says that she would be glad to help you prepare for your meeting. Please come to the Palace at dawn, not two hours later, and her retainer, Teeshinanshibutt, will help you attain the proper attire and appearance for a royal meeting. Please do bathe beforehand, and wear your cleanest clothes, and do bring only those creatures that are essential to your excellent heroic works.

[OOC: Please include your spells chosen and other preparations for adventure. Fair warning: be ready for anything. We'll assume that Catacombs purchases are retroactive to this point.]

What to wear? For an audience with the Overlord, maybe the fancy silk dress. But, then again, the Overlord is calling the Shields for a job. So maybe she expects everyone to be kitted up for work.

Xenia sits on the her and Wynn's bed surrounded by three separate outfits. It's important to make the right decision.

Lady Firiona, the rogue muses, is one of the richies. And sounds like, if this Audience needs nicer clothes, that the richies will maybe be providing it. A chance for more stuff. How can a girl turn down a chance for more stuff.

In the end, she wears the black pirate head scarf to tie back her red curls. Black and black and black and black. Right down to her boots, with only a daring red sash across her hips to add that touch of flair, Xenia waits down in the foyer of the main house for the others to show up and head up to Open Level for the Audience.

Lady Firiona. The name brings back memories. Drew, Gordo, Tionel, Barick and Turin. None of them here now. Some in the grave.

Before leaving for the palace in the morning, Syr pens a short letter to Dotta. A short jaunt out to Narrow Way finds a youth willing to run the note down to Fence Level for a few coppers.

Pack and pouches over simple dress. Lady Firiona will have to do with this. This is what the Crimson Shields are. The way they look reflects what they do.

May be gone again for a few weeks. Hopefully seeing to the plague that everyone is so worried about. Tell the crew that the Crimson Shields are on the job. There's no reason to fear.

Leaving the business in your capable hands.

Theodore & Macaw (arcane sight, comprehend languages, darkvision, see invisibility, tongues)
Thursday July 31st, 2008 10:04:05 AM

Theodore dutifully scrubs up the morning of and dresses in the outfit he wears around the Star Mages. A simple brown robe, belt and shoes. At the very least it's not travel stained, but still not much on style. He keeps his cowboy hat on, which makes the whole ensemble look just silly. Whether he notices his faux pas or not is hard to tell.

He spends the time to go over his spellbook and prepare for the coming day. He shakes his head as he stands, frustrated with something. (Daily spells on sheet linked above.)

As he exits the apartment, ready to visit the first of their appointments for the day, Macaw descends to roost on his master's head. Theodore cinches his satchel and tightens the grip on his staff.

"I'm ready." His glowing blue eyes show resolve.

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75]
Thursday July 31st, 2008 5:32:42 PM

Wynn readies himself to go to Lady Firiona's for their pre-audience audience. He scrubs himself, quickly drags a brush through his hair and gives a final quick trim to his beard. His regular garb is clean and undamaged, and along with his clean shirt will have to serve the purpose. Besides, his Hat of Disguise will be all he needs to impress the nobles with his dress.

While he prepares, he keeps an eye on Xenia as she struggles to decide on her attire. His thought turn to the sight of her jumping around in her 'smalls' from the previous day. "No...best wear more than that" he thinks.

Before leaving, Wynn confirms his gear is in order and that the appropriate potions are stored in his belt pouches. A quick pat of his boots confirms the two daggers in their boot sheathes and the new rod firmly stuffed down the right boot.

He waits patiently for Xenia and the others to ready themselves and follows them out the door.

Harley wonders how they are supposed to be dressed in their "proper attire" and be ready for combat against undead and disease. Well if there is going to be trouble, he isn't going anywhere without his armor, shield and weapons. Harley does take some time polishing and cleaning his supplies. Then he gets himself cleaned up.

When it is time to go, he gets dressed in his standard adventuring gear. He checks that his new supplies are stored in the correct place and that everything is clean and shiny.

The halfling cleric rises near dawn and makes his devotions for the day, selecting spells and making other preparations for the coming audience. Besides brushing the hair on his head and feet, Belkior carefully lays out all of his equipment and checks it over. After making sure that his new chain armor is in good shape, he slips it over his head. Fortunately, the new armor never seems to need polishing. Over that, Belkior slips on his vestment that declares his devotion to Alemi. Then the small things - pouches containing potions, wands tucked into his belt, other supplies inside the magical backpack.

Belkior is then ready to go, ready to face whatever the day brings.

Ready For A Royal Appearance (DM Cayzle)
Friday August 1st, 2008 11:23:35 AM

The night passes, and at the appointed early hour, the party presents themselves at Overlord Palace. At the front entrance, you are met by a gnome, the one called Teeshinanshibutt.

"Ah, Master Redbow, a pleasure to see you again. This way, please."

You are ushered past the guards, and two soldiers fall in behind you. As the gnome leads you to an antechamber, you take in the palace. It is magnificent, with vaulting ceilings and beautiful stonework that shows no join or seam. Some halls are clean and austere; others are carved with masterful bas-reliefs, showing the city and its history.

In the chamber, Teeshinanshibutt sizes you up. "Some are fair, some need more than others. As I expected," he says softly. The chamber is white marble all around, but hung with tapestries and curtains, and the curtains can be drawn to make private booths. Servants lead each of you to a different booth, although you all remain in earshot of each other.

"Remember," Teeshinanshibutt adjures his workers, "they need to be ready for adventure, not a ball."

A mage comes to each booth in turn, using Prestidigitation to remove all the dust and dirt from each of you, and your clothes. No rip or flaw is too small for a Mending spell. The mage's eyes glow like Theo's, and he tells the workers which articles of clothing are magical, and which are not.

Xenia gets several nods of approval for her practical but dashing black outfit. But her red hair needs some styling, evidently; the black scarf in her hair is replaced with an ebony comb that holds her red hair just so. The comb is decorated with a small emblem of a crimson shield.

Theo is clearly a mess, and the lady in charge of overseeing his preparation almost walks out when the mage tells her the hat has to stay. But then she has an idea. First, a wrestling match and a trim for that unkempt hair. Then a short robe, ending a little below the knees, replaces Theo's mis-matching brown robe. She adds soft leather knee-high boots. The new robe and boots are the exact same shade of grey as the wizard's magic hat. A wide, dark grey belt finished the ensemble off, and the belt's buckle is enameled pewter with a crimson shield.

As Wynn is spruced up, he explains that with his Hat of Disguise, he needs no other clothes. The gentleman in charge of the bard counters by asking Wynn to use the Hat now. If Wynn does so, he get advice -- a lot of advice -- on how to control the hat in order to make himself presentable for court.

And what about those who see through illusion? the bard is asked. The bard's cloak, if he does not object, is replaced with a longer, finer one, trimmed with soft fur, and fastened with a crimson shield brooch. The new cloak actualy has a few more pockets than the old one.

Harley and Belkior, both in their armors, get similar treatment. In addition to the magic cleansing, the hair styling, the manicure, and a high level of care applied to all your gear, every plate and every link of your armor is polished to a high sheen. And their shields are limned with crimson.

Understanding that monks are often less given to flashy attire, the dressers do not much alter the style of Syr's clothes. But his simple outfit is replaced by an identical new one that is exactly like it aside from color: It is brown and tan with blue stitching. "At least it makes your belt, cloak, and headband into an actual outfit, rather than a hodgepodge." one seamster tells him. Syr also gets a crimson shield brooch for his cloak, like Wynn's.

An hour and a half later, you are all arrayed in your finery. Teeshinanshibutt tries to give you a quick course in court manners. Do not turn your back on the Overlord. Address her as "Lady," or "Overlord," but NOT "Lady Overlord." Do not touch her. Do not look her directly in the eyes. You are being allowed all your weapons and gear, which is a great honor. Do not use vulgar expressions from the street. The list continues, but it all seems pretty obvious. Be polite and respectful, it boils down to.

Then it is time for the audience! The Lady Firiona makes her first appearance, accepts your greetings and thanks, and guides you deeper in. She guides you to a portal. The portal is filled, top to bottom and side to side, by a dark foggy mass. A spellcraft check vs DC 25 tells you that Highlight to display spoiler: {The fogbank is the visual part of a Private Sanctum spell.}

The Lady tells you to enter.

Identical as they may be in look to his original togs, the key to clothing is in the feel. Syr turns his head first this way and then around to the other way, testing the feel of his neck within the new collar. His body knows. These are new and different.

But when he looks back at the others, the new and awkwardness of his own clothing sinks away like spring rain into the rich dark earth. They look fine, all of them. A feeling of pride stirs within him. To be one of the Crimson Shields of Hope.

The time comes, and the elfish Hand, straightens his spine, all thought of appearance is subsumed in the needs of the task at hand. Syr walks boldly through the dark swirling cloud to meet the Overlord.

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75]
Friday August 1st, 2008 7:10:16 PM

The bard does indeed activate his hat and a brief shimmering wave replaces his clean but plain outfit with that more befitting a court appearance. His simple brown tunic now appears black with a single crimson piping running up the sleeves. The collar is also lined with crimson. His brown trousers are replaced by dark black leggings that fit neatly into the soft leather of his black boots. He pulls the rod from his boots and for all intents and purposes it looks to be a fine gentleman's walking stick with an ivory coloured knob.

He accepts the valets suggestions about refinements to his attire and trades his cloak for the one provided. He transfers the items from one cloak to the other and leaves his behind. "I'd like that cloak back when we're done" he advises.

The bard listens to the instructions and steels himself for the formalities of their audience. "I feel like I'm being readied for a dinner at auntie Clarissa's home" he whispers. "No running, use a knapkin, don't speak unless asked, and for goodness sakes don't stare at her bottom, I don't care how big it is!" Wynn mimics his mother's voice and wags a finger at Xenia and Syr as he speaks.

Teensie Butt and his girls sure know their stuff.

The rogue admires the fall of her own hair, bound in artful disarray. Somehow they had teased her locks into a style both sassy and elegant at the same time. And all held together by a single small comb!!!

How they do that?

And the comb! How did they come up with sump'in just the right shade of ebon black? Just the right shade of crimson red? It's just perfect. It's just amazing.

Next to Wynn, all black and crimson and elegant himself, Xenia grins a big cat grin and steps, at his side, into the weerd misty foggy stuff.

The Overlord (DM Cayzle)
Monday August 4th, 2008 8:02:36 AM

As you pass through the foggy border, you enter a lavishly appointed chamber -- seemingly a place for planning and deliberation. There is a large central table, with enough chairs for 20. But there are only three people, clustered at one end of the table -- and an unobtrusive armed man, likely a guard of other professional soldier, in plate armor, standing at attention.

The three turn, and you are greeted by a woman who must be the Overlord of the Floating City. Alicia D'Anlaf, the Overlord, wears a light coloured robe, and a few sparkles twinkle in her swept-up hair. It is almost a ball-gown in its finery, but her dress belies the very serious expression on her face.

"Ah," she says, taking you in. She does not miss a detail. "You must be the Crimson Shields." A slight smile at the corners of her mouth softens her features. But you get from her a strong sense of purpose, and of great competence. "Please, sit with us."

Spot or Search check 20: Highlight to display spoiler: {It looks like she has been wearing these clothes since last night -- and if she has slept in them, it was not for more than an hour or two.}

She introduces her advisers.

Aerashkiel is a member of the Circle of Alder. He has a long braid of grey hair. His cloak appears to be made of leaves, feathers and tree bark. An owl is perched on his shoulder -- his companion has magnificent, flecked plummage and huge orange eyes.

The Lady Dolores Solara is very attractive, perhaps in her late twenties; her long sweep of jet black hair glistens as though it has been polished; she has light brown skin, dark brown eyes; her black slubbed silk dress accentuates every curve. A grey silk shawl is draped artfully across one shoulder. In the folds can be seen an embroidered design that looks like a huge black griffon, or maybe a dragon.

Note to any with Arcane Sight: Highlight to display spoiler: {The Overlord and her two attendants are all human, with no illusions in place. The Overlord herself is wearing several magic items including two rings and her clothing, and is under the effect of a strong divinatory magic, and several strong abjuration magics. The Lady Solara possesses two rings and an amulet at the very least, and her aura(s)is confusing (that shawl?). The druid possesses NO magic items, but several hidden magic places on his body. You have not stared hard and long enough to detect who is a caster.}

"I am sorry the Patriarch of Alemi is too busy to attend this meeting, given the nature of the emergency, but he is naturally quite busy."

She asks you to introduce yourselves to her, and to let her know what you can do.

"I have heard in general terms of your capabilities, but there are a few faces I had expected who are not here, and several who I do not know at all, even by report."

"Let me be frank -- in times of need, the City has often turned to its heros and adventurers, and so I hope to turn to you. But we should know each other better if we hope to answer this current crisis," says the Overlord.

Out of curiosity, Theodore directs his arcane sight towards each of the hosts to determine any spellcasters and their strength.

When it is his turn, Theodore steps forward to introduce himself. "I'm Theodore, and this is Macaw." He points to the sharp-eyed raven atop his head. "I am a wizard who studies with the Star Mages Guild. I hope that I can be of service to you."

He inclines his head slightly, so as not to disturb Macaw, and steps back.

"Syrdeth Redbow, Overlord." Syr steps a pace forward and bows. "Domi has honored me by accepting me as one of his Hands. Like my lord Domi, I train in unarmed combat and hone my body to be the instrument through which I might protect others."

"We lost Lang Madchel to a dragon near Aisildur, Overlord. Angus Deminof is in Plateau City overseeing the orphanage there. And Florin Jadenth now has a wife and adopted daughter to care for."

"We met Theodore and Harley in Ailsildur as well. They've proven capable since then, and from what I've seen, interested in serving Floating City."

"So here we are, as you see us before you."

"I'm Alexandria Merryman Next, Your Ladyship." Xenia dips into a curtsy. "But if you could call me Xenia. I mean, you know how folks only use your full name when they're mad at you?"

The rogue's sharp eyes catch the signs of fatigue, the all night vigil. (Spot Auto success.)

"I guess you could call me a spy girl. I know you got a big job, taking care of the city, and we're here to help you with anything you need getting done."

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75]
Monday August 4th, 2008 1:05:00 PM

The bard listens carefully to the Overlord as she asks her questions. His mind harkens back to the instructions they were given before entering. "M'lady...my name is Wynn, Wynn Brightsong. I hail from the Cinnamon Valley in the Windbourne Hills but now make my home with the Crimson Shields who were disposed to welcome me into their circle of friends. I have little to offer other than a reasonably quick sword and a quicker pen. I have penned the history of the Crimson Shields in verse and prose and if you are interested I would sing to you of the fall of Lang Madachel at the hands of the red dragon." Wynn bows and steps back to allow the next to speak.

The halfling cleric nods slightly to each of the three people in the room. When the Patriarch of Alemi is mentioned, Belkior relaxes slightly even though the words confirm some of what he feared.

"I am Belkior Orvisson, a Healer and Paragon of Alemi. At the present time, I have taken the responsibility of keeping my fellows in the Crimson Shields healthy and protected. In this matter, I am sure that some of my abilities will be of use."

The Underlord (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday August 6th, 2008 8:33:27 AM

The Overlord nods as the Crimson Shields mention some of their capabilities.

She says to Syr, "At first I was nervous about sending a Hand to fight disease, since the problem seems to be spread by touch. But with a Paragon to protect you, I am much less fearful."

"Protect your friends well, Sir Paragon," she tells Belkior, "for your strengths will be needed."

"And I am sure that the talents of stealth, song, and the Star Tower will serve well too."

"And Reverend Harley," the Overlord adds, "it may be that your talents prove the most useful of all, beause of the undead you will face."

"But let me stop dropping hints and get to the heart of the problem. The Trash level has become infected with a terrible new disease, the Creeping Death. I have set up a meeting with the Underlord to discuss the issue."

Alicia D'Anlaf motions to the mage at her side, and the noblewoman arcanist casts a Scrying spell ON the table. This evidently activates it as a magic item (which Theo now sees that it is). The surface of the table in the middle clears, and becomes like a pane of glass. The room beyond is well-appointed, lit by magical light, and it would seem that the scrying window there is vertical, and that it is set up in front of a throne.

The Overlord calls, "Underlord?"

The Underlord, clearly very ill, walks into view and sits down. He explains how the infection has spread rapidly, turning first fingers, then limbs, and finally whole bodies grey, black and withered. Once the transformation is complete the victims become savage, mindless undead, attacking everything in sight.

It is clear that the Underlord is suffering from the disease he describes.

His diviner, named Shelik, has uncovered some clues as to the source of the disease. "Please, Overlord, send us some help!" He seems to see the party around the table for the first time. "Are these the heroes? We need them. Under the usual terms, please?"

Before he can reveal more the Underlord begins to transform, his speech slurring, black veins spreading rapidly across his face. "Noo! Oh no, please, kill me! Don't let it take me too!"

Blades flash, and two Undercrats step forward into view of the scrying table. The first is the ponytailed Torl, an old enemy of the Shields from their earliest days. The second, smirking coolly at the party, is Jonas. What on earth is he doing down there? Last the party saw, he was locked away on the Barrack Level.

Before the party can learn more the scrying pool fades. "With the Underlord dead," says Alicia, "the only means of communication is lost. Will you venture into the Undercity to find out what the Underlord's diviner has discovered? And then to work to solve or cure the problem?"

"I must tell you that only four times in the history of the Float have we sent adventuring heroes down to the Undercity, below the Trash, to aid the Underlord. One of those times included the death of all by the breath of the epic dragon Flame, before he became Flamelich. And what it more, the city must protect its secrets. After you return, you must agree to allow us to wipe away the memories of your visit."

"Can you agree to that?"

[OOC to Theo - Note that concentrating to determine spell-casting ability requires a little staring, and will surely be taken as rudeness. Are you sure you want to try? A decent Bluff check might let you get away with it.]

The Underlord dead. The look in Syr's eyes is dire.

"You have my pledge, Overlord. There are few natives of Floating City that haven't heard rumors of the Undercity, but no one knows the way. I guess that's why you want us to having our memories removed when we return."

"You have my pledge in that too, Overlord."

Wednesday August 6th, 2008 10:02:58 AM

"Hey! Hey, did you see that! It's that rat, Jonas!" The rogue points an excited finger at the now plain surface of the table. "How did he get loose again?"

"I'm all in, Your Ladyship. All set and ready to go."

A spectre of doubt steals through the cleric's mind. They would rely upon him to hold the undead. Here was the test of faith that he had know all his life would come. In this quest would Domi's blessing be forged.

"I agree as well, Overlord," Harley replies.

Wednesday August 6th, 2008 12:58:08 PM

Theodore takes a sharp breath when the communication is cut and looks on the others with resolute eyes. He is all ready to charge in to help the city. His determination is shattered quickly, though.

He shakes his head and furrows his brow. "I can't agree to having my memories erased," he says to the Overlord. "I'm sorry, but is there another way? I can make a pledge to you, I'm an honest person. I want to help, but I can't allow that."

The shoulders slump and the head lowers. On top of his head, Macaw opens judging eyes, directing them at the Overlord.

"Well ... well ... well ... I mean ... "

"I'm sorry, Your Ladyship," Xenia speaks up again, "but ... I mean ... I'd really hate to, you know, live some time with Wynn that I can't remember. I can keep my mouth shut too. 'Specially if it's the right thing to do."

Belkior
Wednesday August 6th, 2008 10:30:04 PM

The halfling cleric listens to his companions as they debate the terms of their aiding the Float. Belkior is encouraged that no one questions the need to help, merely the price of having their memories erased afterwards. As a devotee of Alemi, he is wavering.

"I will help the City and the Undercity, no doubt of that. As for erasing my memory of the journey, I would bow to the wisdom of the Patriarch of Alemi."

Memories are Precious (DM Cayzle)
Thursday August 7th, 2008 10:03:25 AM

The Overlord hears Xenia's remark.

"Jonas was chosen as an Undercrat a few Mask Day's ago. The other one was sent to serve his time with the Underlord, who evidently put him to use. It may seem disturbing to see two such as these in a position of power, rather than more veteran Undercrats, but it is not for me to question the Underlord."

The Overlord is clearly unhappy that members of the Crimson Shields are balking at the memory erasure. She tries to offer reassurances. "The process of erasure, though secret, is ancient and fail-safe. Never have any memories been lost other than the ones agreed on. As I understand it, the process requires the willing participation of the subject, and it is the subject who specifies the memories to be erased."

"Keep in mind that the workings of the Undercity are so secret that I do not know them. The Undercrats who run the city serve for 20 years, and then their memories are erased. But not all memories ... just those that reveal the secrets of the Undercity. Your memories of what happens will not be affected, except insofar as you see or learn the the mechanisms that keep the Float afloat."

"Let me be frank. The Dragon groups I know are either retired or occupied. You were not my first choice for this mission -- but you are now my only choice, of those who may have a chance to succeed."

"The Underlord is dead. We have an emergency."

Nodding to Belkior, she adds, "If the Patriarch urges you to take this course, will you reconsider? I will not disturb you unless there is a reason to."

The Overlord's mage assures her that she can communicate magically with the Patriarch.

Alicia tells Xenia that her memories of Wynn will not be touched, unless they have a technical conversation about the Float's secrets.

Syr (AC30 - HP142/142) - Sub/Al
Thursday August 7th, 2008 11:31:52 AM

Syr faces the three, the wizard, the bard, and the woman devoted to the bard. "Personally, I never gave a thought to what memories they'd be taking and what memories they wouldn't. I just trusted them to know what would be right."

"But I think I understand how precious your memories are to you. If you'd rather not go, I understand."

Harley - Sub/Al
Thursday August 7th, 2008 11:37:39 AM

Harley watches the others, unsure as to what they might do. For certain, this represents a difficult decision. But there seems so much riding on this for the greater good of the entire city.

He watches, armor gleaming from its earlier treatment. He watches and waits for decisions to be made.

He looks to his friends next. "I'm very sorry."

Macaw keeps his attention on the Overlord.

Memories are Precious - Correction (DM Cayzle)

Cayzle OOC: I wrote: " I will not disturb you unless there is a reason to." BUT I meant ...

"I will not disturb him [HIM, the Patriarch], unless there is a reason to."

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75]
Thursday August 7th, 2008 10:12:44 PM

The bard listens to the Overlords elaborations on the memory erasure and her obvious desparation. "My apologies M'lady, I did not understand it to be only the memories of the technical workings of the city. I will submit to the procedure."

The bard gives Xenia's hand a gentle squeeze. "An emergency after all is an emergency!"

[OOC and all this time I thought the city worked on upsidasium!]

Belkior
Thursday August 7th, 2008 10:21:08 PM

The halfling cleric nods in agreement. Belkior looks at his companions before speaking, however, and at the assistants of the Overlord.

"If the Patriarch determines that erasure of my memory is for the good of the Float, then I will do so."

"But there is one thing that might reassure me. What are the terms and conditions of serving as an Undercrat? Are Jonas and Torl obligated to serve in the best interests of the Undercity, or are they free to act as they will? I ask because of the past history between them and my companions."

Xenia (AC24, 68/68HP)
Thursday August 7th, 2008 11:31:35 PM

Xenia molds her self into Wynn's quick embrace. Her face turns to that of the Overlord. The rogue's answer is a nod and a wink.

Then she waits for the answer to Belkior's question.

Court Mage and Corner (DM Cayzle)
Friday August 8th, 2008 7:41:49 AM

First the Overlord answers Belkior. "All those who dwell in the Undercity as Undercrats are oathbound to serve the Float and the Underlord; to agree to memory erasure after 20 years of service; and to protect and maintain the secrets and mechanisms of the Undercity. In return, after their service they are magically youthened, and receive amnesty (if they had debts or crimes before service) or compensated in one of several other ways."

[DM Cayzle OOC: Those of you who are native, or have Knowledge Local, or Bardic Lore, can also ask the DM questions about what their characters know already about the Float and its customs. Please feel free to ask me about stuff like that in game or in e-mail. Also note that I myself am new to the Float, so PLEASE do correct me for any errors I am sure to make.]

Theo says that he could not give up his memories. The Overlord winces when she hears his answer. But she nods to the noblewoman who is her court mage. "Please, do contact the Patriarch, and ask him for his blessing and approval of the memory erasure."

Lady Dolores Solara smiles with the corners of her mouth. She pauses to consider for a moment, and then casts Sending (standard spellcraft DC20 to recognize it). She voices her Sending out loud:

"Patriarch, the Crimson Shields wish for your approval before they will agree to erasing memories of the Undercity after the mission. Will you give it?"

Theo might note that her query is exactly 25 words, the most the spell allows.

An answer comes back, in the voice of a hale but elderly male:

"Per long tradition, all those who learn the secrets of the Float must agree to lose those memories later. I agree with this and hope --"

His answer is cut off at the 25 word mark. But his intent seems clear enough. The Overlord hopes that this will satisfy Belkior.

The Overlord turns to Theo. "Sir Mage, I understand your reluctance, but I cannot send you into the Undercity without your agreement to memory erasure. You cannot give it. Very well."

She pauses a moment in thought.

"Nonetheless, you will still need a mage. Many have fled the city, and of those who remain, I trust in only one." She nods to Lady Solara. "And I must have a court mage."

"But if you will serve me in her place until her return, Star Mage Theodore, I will release the Lady Solara to accompany the Crimson Shields to the Undercity -- if she will agree."

The beautiful noblewoman is startled, but quickly composes herself, and answers, "I am not a hero, but when the city calls, I will answer. Yes, I will do it."

[DM Cayzle OOC: Shegger, I have this whole module planned and nothing else to run for you guys right now. So if you really have to bow out to be true to your character, you could play this NPC wizard for the module, earning most of the module's xp for Theo in this way. The memory erasure really is not optional. I am open to any other suggestion that will allow you to play and allow me to use this module. You could come up with some other way to keep your memories, using magic, chicanery, and/or subterfuge, for example. Or Theo could have a change of heart. If needed, e-mail me at cayzle@cayzle.com.]

The Overlord waits for the answer. After getting it, she gives the party more information.

"The Trash Level has been sealed under quarantine. I understand that roving bands of undead victims of the plague roam the streets, and those who are healthy have barricaded themselves indoors. You must get to the heart of the Trash Level, to the Ramp, in order to enter the Undercity. There are four entry points -- at each of the corner towers. Your first decision is to pick your corner."

She unrolls a map and awaits your decision.

Theodore & Macaw (arcane sight, comprehend languages, darkvision, see invisibility, tongues)
Friday August 8th, 2008 9:25:10 AM

It looks almost as if Theodore is physically being pulled in two separate directions. Shadows of doubt, conflict, and resolve pass over his face. Finally, he takes a shuddering breath and shakes his head.

"I am deeply sorry," he says with a lowered head. "I cannot go. I just can't do it."

When the Overlord offers another suggestion, that Theodore stay and assist her while the Lady Solara takes his place with the Shields, the wizard's eyes enlarge and his lower jaw slowly drops like a rusty draw bridge.

"Of course I would help you, Overlord," he quickly says, nodding his head vigorously. He seems eager to make up for his inability to accompany his companions. "I would do my best."

Harley - Sub/Al
Friday August 8th, 2008 11:30:26 AM

This startling city of tiers is completely new, and from the brief glimpse of Trash Level acquired during Xenia's tour, there is little to fuel an opinion as to which might be the best point of entry. But one question does come to Harley's mind.

"How stringent is your quarantine, Overlord? Do you have blocks against teleportation? Are there blocks against teleportation from this ... Undercity?"

Xenia (AC24, 68/68HP)
Friday August 8th, 2008 12:09:28 PM

The rogue detaches from her guy. Planting her palms on the table, she looks down on the map.

"Looks like it's a direct run down Cutthroat Lane from the Northeast pillar," she says. A black gloved finger draws a line almost straight from the corner to the map to the place labeled the Under Ramp. "The straight road will give us a long line of sight. Easier to see what's coming up ahead. If we come in from the Northwest down King's End we might run into things kinda sudden when we turn one of these corners."

"Your Ladyship," the rogue pauses, hesitation writ within her eyes, "these folks, the ones turned into Gray Walkers, can they be cured? Is there no chance for them? I mean, all of them, must have, like, mothers and fathers, folks who care for them. You know what I mean? You know what I'm getting on?"

The halfling cleric nods when he recognizes the Patriarch's voice and when the instruction is received to submit to the memory erasure. The suggestion that the party accept a replacement for Theo is surprising, but Belkior could see how it might work.

Once the Overlord unfurls the map, Belkior moves to examine it with Xenia.

"I'll bow to your knowledge of the City, Xenia. I'll simply prepare myself to deal with the undead that the Overlord has mentioned."

Xenia's lips purse with displeasure.

"Yeah." she replies in thought. "Did you see that smirky look on his face when he and that other guy killed down the Undercrat?"

"Hey, Syr, who's this Torl guy, anyway? What's he like?"

Florin Jadenth
Saturday August 9th, 2008 8:09:10 PM

Florin looks about and wonders what is going on, what he has missed and such. Seeing that the group looks to be speaking to some lords and lady/s, Florin blushes and is rather thankful for the hat of disquise that makes it look like he is wearing a vizor helmet...using the magic of the hat though he quickly makes a quick shift in appearance so he is in more formal looking clothing even if he is really wearing his armor...his sword still present though and speaks up before he might offend the noble looking people, "I'm terribly sorry that I'm late. Some urgent buisness sprung up that I had to see to as a paladin of Domi and undead hunter. My name is Florin Jadenth of noble Jadenth house and friend to the Shield's here. I mean, if you already didn't know my lords and lady." Florin quickly changes that to "ladies" if he notices anymore then one noble lady in the room.

Florin ,moves up to stand by Syr and smiles to him, "Sorry if I suddenly vanished on the group. Hope I didn't miss to much." Maybe one of these times Florin will finally get Ivy introduced, seems like everytime he makes plans to do so, something comes up.

Looking around Florin wonders if someone will fill him in on everything thus far.

Harley doesn't recognize the two former enemies of the Shields. He does see the reaction from his new companions to this Undercrat named Jonas.

Syr
Sunday August 10th, 2008 10:03:27 PM

Turning to Xenia, "Torl? Wow, that was a long time ago. I remember he had weird eyes. Maybe a bit of dragon blood. If memory serves, he was a sorcerer. Kinda small time so he must have made some friends since then. Rather ironic that he was looking for the Mask of Iglion or something which grants the wearer immunity from being chosen on Mask Day. Luckily, we beat him to it."

Not having known Theo for very long, the elf just shrugs off his departure, "Theo, I understand your reluctance, serve the Overlord well and feel free to use the flat while we are gone."

The elf's head whips around at the commotion and a relieved smile appears on his face, "Florin, just out of curiosity, were you late for your own birthing?" He takes pity on the paladin's confused look, "Just to fill you in, we have to stop the undead from taking over the city by going down into the Undercity where Jonas is an Undercrat."

His face darkens upon uttering the name of Jonas, "Overload, what are the consequences of warring with an Undercrat if we discover one is directly involved with this Creeping Death?"

After hearing the answer, he turns to the rest of the group, "The Cuthroat Lane pillar it is, unless you wanted to scout them out Xenia? I wouldn't be opposed to the King's Way pillar either."

The End of the Meeting (DM Cayzle)
Monday August 11th, 2008 7:12:46 AM

Theo accepts the Overlord's compromise: He will serve her personally, while her own arcane adviser joins the party temporarily.

Harley asks about teleportations. She says that teleporting into the Trash Level should present no problem. But teleporting into or out of the Undercity, while technically possible, is fraught with dangers. It is a risky option. But an option nonetheless? The ancient mechanisms of the Teucri can interfere with teleportation.

Xenia considers options for getting through the Trash Level.

She asks the Overlord a tough question. Alicia pauses, then answers, "Are you asking me if you may slay those infected? Are they innocents who cannot control themselves? Can they be cured?"

She sighs. "I do not know. But I do know this: If you do not succeed, many more will be infected. More will die. So if you must destroy the infected then do what you must. Achieving your goal is more important than sparing those who are now undead."

Belkior looks at the map. He notes that each route is different:
Northeast - straight road, shortest path.
Northwest - wider road, short path.
Southeast - does not open on a major road.
Southwest - longest path.

As the party is pondering the map, Florin enters! He is a little confused, but is quickly brought up to date.

Xenia and Wynn exchange private thoughts.

Harley asks about the means that can be employed. The Overlord answers, "By repute, you are heroes, not villains. So I would not expect you to resort to villainy in any case. Also note that the mechanisms and devices of the Undercity -- whatever they are -- must not be damaged, lest we all sink!"

Syr offers some party history and teases Florin gently.

So, has the party decided on an entrance?

When the decision is made, the Overlord thanks you all and answers any final questions [OOC: Last chance for questions!] She says, "The future of the Floating City is in your care! May all the Gods of the Wold bless you and keep you safe!"

The druid who is her other adviser, named Aerashkiel, leads you to your chosen entry to the Trash Level. He also offers you three Extended Barkskins, caster level 15,one to Lady Solara and any two of the Crimson Shields who could use them. He also offers Syr or any creature you might bring a Greater Magic Fang, caster level 15.

So who gets the barkskins? And which entrance do you take?

"Um, you got the question right." Xenia's voice is quiet upon receiving her answer. "Um, Your Ladyship." Her face is, at first, pensive, a mask of doubt. Then, it becomes closed and unreadable. The trip from Open Level, through the many lively streets and ramps, down to Fence Level is, for the rogue, done in silence.

"I say the Northeast pillar. Straight road, shortest path, wide street. Have bows and stuff ready. See anything coming from far away, and hit 'em a'fore it can get to us. 'Member, now, the Overlord said you get this disease thingie by getting touched. I don't think we want any of these gray guys getting in close."

"I'll take one o' them Barkskin spells, Rashkie." She takes a scroll from her haversack and then turns to Wynn. "Can you cast this on me, Hon?"

"I'm gonna go invisible and scout ahead. I'll stay two-three hun'red feet ahead of the group and report everything back to Wynn. I'll be flying, so I might be up in the air." (Please see below for rolls, spells and position.)

"So, 'Rashkiel, once we get to the Under Ramp, how do we get down into the Undercity? We just wait till they let us in?"

Florin Jadenth
Monday August 11th, 2008 8:35:09 PM

Florin smiles at Syr and gives the man a light push, "I might of been, you never know. Mom always said I was slow...well when I was human."

Florin glances to the map and thinks over things, people usually say the shortest way is often enough the most dangerous way but he leaves this decision to the group before speaking, "Maybe my skills will be of more help in this little mission."

Florin smiles and looks towards the Overlord, speaking quickly before the group has to leave, "I think I heard some small mention of memory erasing just as I was comeing in. Am I to take it that the group must agree to this?" Florin thinks over this a moment before continueing, "I ask a simple request on that if thats true. I simply ask that any battles with the undead are left if possible. The memory of those battles may come in handy in future situations. Specially if other places are affected with this problem or may be at some point of time or another."

Other then this, Florin is ready to head out.

(Haveing alittle problem with getting my CS updated on the google site but will get it up as soon as possible. Also since we had some internet troubles in the past I was unable to get Florin in the Cats, Would it be possible to buy some healing items from you Cayzle as DM?)

The bard turns to the overlord one last time. "M'lady" he asks " I understand that Jonas has taken a pledge, but if we find he has had a hand in this, have we your authority to bring him to justice?"

"I think you should have Aerashkiel read the scrolls Xenia. I can try, but these are a bit beyond me." If Syr or one of the others does not accept the remaining extended scroll of Barkskin, the bard will ask to hold it untill it might be most needed. If this is the case, he will cast read magic and prepare the scroll for casting at a later time. "

Wynn waits to be teleported into the Trash Level and on arrival activates his ring of blinking. He keeps to the walls of the buildings lining the street and follows the invisible rogue towards the under-ramp.

"Hopefully, we will find the source of the problem, fix it and get out of there quickly. If we are lucky we will not have any contact with the walking dead or anyone else opposed to finding out what is going on."

Harley looks at the map to see if there is any better path to their target. He continues to listen to the conversation and questions.

Belkior
Monday August 11th, 2008 10:09:12 PM

The halfling cleric greets Florin when the elf enters the Overlord's chamber. Once there is mention of final questions, Belkior stirs and nearly blurts out his questions.

"Excuse me! I need to ask the Patriarch something, or maybe someone here will know the result. What, if any, healing magics have been found to be effective against this disease? Or natural remedies, if that is required?"

"For that matter, are the powers granted to me as a Healer and Paragon effective against the disease?"

While he waits for an answer, Belkior listens to Xenia's suggestions. The rogue is making sense and the Paragon has nothing to add.

"Everyone else, I'll conceal you from any afflicted that are already undead. And I'll have my magical protection against evil active, so you can fall back to me for protection."

Belkior will wait until the group is entering, or about to enter Trash Level before casting his spells. He activates his Pearl of Power in order to have access to his spell again.

Syr
Tuesday August 12th, 2008 10:37:42 AM

Nodding to Wynn he whispers with a slight grin, "Maybe he'll answer your question about Jonas?"

Syr nods his thanks to the druid as he casts his spells. Before they enter he looks over to Wynn, "Your call on the barkskin. If you don't take it now, I will. I don't think we can take it with us." He shrugs at the bard.

Assuming they make it to the tower okay, he shakes Aerashkiel's hand "Wish us luck?" Peering out the tower, he faces the others, "Time to run the guantlet. You guys tell me? Xenia out first and everyone else follows? Our undead hunter front and center? Solara and Belk in the middle with Harley and Wynn on the wings. I'll stay in the rear for the time being?" The Start of Danger (DM Cayzle)
Tuesday August 12th, 2008 8:05:35 PM

[OOC to Florin: Sure, spend some money on cure potions at book cost. But decide now and stick to it, please! Let me know when your sheet is up to date.]

Florin asks about the memory erasure, and the Overlord explains that is only those memories that reveal the secrets of the Float and the Undercity that must be erased. Memories of fighting undead are fine.

Wynn asks what to do if any of the Undercrats are implicated in the disease problem. The Overlord says that their oaths should keep them from harming the city in this way, but if any Undercrat has done this, then they should be arrested and detained if possible, or killed if that is the only way to fix the problem.

She tells Belkior that so far no one knows how to cure this undeath disease.

========

The druid and a squad of the Overlord's guard escort you down down down through the Northeast Pillar, down to the Trash Level. There are guards down there, and the wide doors to the Trash Level are sealed shut. There the druid casts his Barkskins on Lady Solara, Xenia, and Syr, using a metamagic rod of extend.

The doors are unbarred, the group enters the Trash Level, and the dors close behind them.

Xenia flies off invisibly to scout. At the moment, you are the only creatures in sight. What do the rest of you do as Xenia goes off to scout? There are buildings immediately nearby; most are shuttered and doors are closed, but two that you can see are open, with doorways yawning, and one of the two has a fire burning within.

Xenia scouts forward. She sees a gang of clearly undead creatures -- Know religion DC12 = Highlight to display spoiler: {ghouls?} -- maybe 20 or 30? in an alley a couple city blocks forward. Is that another gang crossing the street up ahead?

OoC: Please note that the question that I asked in the previous post was not answered. I'll take this as an 'I don't know.' on the part of the NPC.

"So, 'Rashkiel, once we get to the Under Ramp, how do we get down into the Undercity? We just wait till they let us in?"

IC:
"Wynn! There's forty, maybe sixty of these Gray Walker things down here! And I haven't even gotten part of the way to the Under Ramp!"

"They're thin gray guys. 'Member them things what jumped out of the pits when we first showed up at the plantation? Tell Belkie that they all look sorta like that. Dunno if they're the same or not, I just can't tell one from another." (Knowledge Religion 6. But she's seen these kinds of undead before.)

"Hold everyone there. We might hafta come in from a different way. Unless we wanna try and kill all of these guys down. If anyone can think of a way to get through, I'm all for it. Have 'em think up a plan. But, tell everyone to 'member, if we get to the Under Ramp with a whole buncha Gray Guys on our heels, and that Under Ramp door don't open right away. We're gonna get mobbed."

"I think I got time to make it to the Northwest pillar from here. I'll scout the rest of the way to the Under Ramp, up King's Way to the Northwest pillar and then back."

The invisible rogue folds her arms at her side and arrows down the street, cataloging the dangers as she goes.

Florin nods at the Overlord's comments on his question and now looks to the group, "Ready as always." He smiles at Syr's comment, "Front a center huh? This shall be different. Seems I usually help cover the rear with you."

Florin falls into place and moves along with the others then.

Belkior - Hide from Undead, Magic Circle vs. Evil, Purifying Aura
Tuesday August 12th, 2008 10:52:44 PM

The halfling cleric casts his spells upon arriving on Trash Level. Once Belkior has protected himself and his companions, he waits for reports from Xenia and whoever else is scouting.

Presuming that Wynn shares the scouting report, Belkior will nod.

"Did Xenia describe these things? If they're mindless, we can move past them quite easily with the protective spell that I have used. If they're intelligent, though, there's a chance that they will spot us."

"So, do we stay here, or move as quickly as possible towards the Underramp?"

The flickering bard waits for any additional comments before heading towards the underramp. "Xenia's scouting out another route, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Meeping and glibbering (DM Cayzle)
Thursday August 14th, 2008 12:16:33 AM

Xenia reports back through her new telepathic link to Wynn. There's a pack of undead up ahead, and more in the distance!

Wynn relays Belkior's question to Xenia ... the undead do not seem mindless. They are feral and they move with purpose, unlike skeletons and zombies.

Xenia catches faint sounds from the undead in the distance. They make weird meeping and glibbering sounds.

Xenia keeps up her invisible flight. She reckons she can fly fast to the northwest column, take a quick look, and come back. She has not yet done so, but she is thinking about it.

[DM Cayzle OOC: Gotta tell ya, the lack of scale on the maps of the Float in the Woldipedia is killin' me! How wide IS the Float? How far is it from column to column? Maybe you guys can tell me? Without setting a precedent, let's say, sure, Xenia can fly to the northwest pillar and back to the northeast in just about five minutes. Okay? Gosh darn lack of scale!]

[Still OOC: Okay, so I'm happy to give Xenia her five minutes of scouting. But five minutes is along time in D&D -- enough time for a fight to start and finish with the rest of the party. Does Xenia want to be a few minutes distant from the party if a fight starts? That could mean Xenia sits out the one or two real world weeks of posting it might take for a fight to run.]

Wynn suggests moving out. However, just walking forward will inevitably mean encountering at least one roving band of undead.

In fact, just sitting outside the door in the open will likely mean a fight sooner or later. You guys are sitting ducks. You want to sit still for five minutes and hope nothing notices you until Xenia gets back? [OOC: The DM remembers how to roll a wandering monster check from his days playing First Edition.]

Belkior explains to Syr that the undead will have to roll Will saves in order to sense them. So only a percent ... likely a smallish percent ... will attack. The rest will ignore them. But if the party fights back, the spell ends.

Syr and Florin offer the idea of a distraction or lure. Maybe the party can sneak by while the undead are busy with a summoned creature or something.

Harley cannot teleport the whole party ... and to where? Remember that the chance of error may be greater down here, so cast wisely.

Lady Solara holds her peace and sees how the party functions.

[DM Cayzle OOC: I have Xenia's report from her flight all written. But before I post it, I want to know if she really wants to be away from the party that long? And what will the party do for those five minutes? Move out and get into a fight? Sneak forward somehow? Stand pat and hope nothing wanders by? Hide somewhere, somehow? Inquiring DMs want to know!]

Glibbering and meeping (DM Cayzle)
Thursday August 14th, 2008 8:08:13 PM

[OOC: Al, Xenia has only gone a couple of blocks as of my last post. Let me tell you what you see when you get in sight of the Underramp -- before you act.]

Xenia flies out. She sees a number of roving bands of undead creatures in the streets and alleyways. If the party did want to win through on the strength of arms, it would be a fight against hundreds, sure.

Once or twice Xenia sees a curtain move or a scared face through a shutter on the upper storeys of the houses and buildings that line the streets ... suggesting to her that not all the populace has caught the disease. (A few buildings go a full 5-6 storeys to the ceiling. Most are just two or three. She roofs usually touch -- even over alleys.)

A pall of smoke lies over the whole area. There is a strange stink in the air, that makes Xenia feel a little woozy. Carts and stalls are overturned. Bodies are lying in the gutters. A few fires are guttering here and there -- thanks goodness the Float is made of stone.

Xenia floats fast to the Underramp, which she can see a-ways to the south at the midpoint between the two north columns. She sees flame -- like a moat of liquid fire -- to the south safeguarding the Ramp from the hordes of undead. She sees that there are at least a score or two of lean lanky scrawny smelly undead things in that area, many peering through the flames at the humanoid shapes standing guard beyond.

At this point, even if Xenai pulled two hundred undead away to the northwest, there would be that many or more still between the party and the Ramp. Granted, there is a lot of open space. And a run for it might work. The undead are not standing shoulder to shoulder.

And how long does it take Xenia to fly the quarter mile to a point at which she can see the Ramp? And what is the party doing as she flies there?

Pitiful. That's what it is. Not 'membering that the door to the Northeast pillar is closed. Not 'membering till she gets to where she can see actually see the Under Ramp. They can't go back and choose another way anyway anyhoo.

"I, um, just a'membered, Wynn. We they closed the door on us. We can't go back for another route anyway."

"There's lots of 'em, milling around. Everywhere, Wynn. They don't move, you know, like Zombies. But they don't look very organized. I see folks in windows, but these Greymen don't seem to be, like, you know, trying to break in to get 'em."

"How many of our folks can fly or climb? It don't look like they do much flying or climbing. And you might be able to make your way across the rooftops too. 'Member how the roofs are like to merge together? Even over the alleys."

"Sides, looks like them Under City folks built a moat of fire around pertecting the Under Ramp. We're gonna have to get over that too. Gonna be hard if you don't fly."

With that, she climbs up over the heat of the fire and then flies down above the group of guards.

"Don't shoot or nothing. I'm Xenia with the Crimson Shields. We've come from the Overlord to help you with the plague."

"The rest of the group is making its way down here right now. But we need some way for them to get 'cross this moat of fire. Is there a way to lower any of it for just a little bit?"

Belkior - Hide from Undead, Magic Circle vs. Evil, Purifying Aura
Thursday August 14th, 2008 10:47:09 PM

The halfling cleric waits patiently for Xenia to report back through the new link with her lover. Once Wynn relates what the rogue has told him, Belkior will pause for a moment.

"I can fly, of course. Probably the same as Xenia's shoes, but only once a day. So I should probably save it until we get closer."

"So, Xenia says that there are probably uninfected people left down here. Does anyone remember if the guards would open the doors for people, or are they quarantined down here? That makes a difference - if the people could escape, the right thing would be to distract the undead so that as many uninfected people as possible could escape. I suspect, though, that they are quarantined so the only way to save them is to get below and find the solution to this problem."

"If we decide to go, I'm not particularly good at repelling undead."

Harley doesn't like what he hears as Wynn relays to the group Xenia's scouting report. Hundreds of undead to get past and the door to their back closed and probably locked. He doubts that he, along with Belkior and Florin have enough turning power to reduce the odds to a more manageable number.

"We need to get off the street. We will be spotted soon and this is definitely not a defendable spot. If we get in a building we can probably hold off any amount of these undead that attack us as they are weak in small numbers."

"There are two openings near us, which one should we enter?"

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75]
Friday August 15th, 2008 7:38:34 AM

Wynn relays Xenia's messsage on to the others and holds his position as the group decides on a course of action. While they wait he reaches into his boot and withdraws the rod of enemy detection. "If there are any undead or other enemies lurking within the walls of these closest buildings the rod will detect them, and I will point them out". The bard activates the rod and and begins his search, moving towards the closest building. "Just like watching the hill people search for water" he jests.

[OOC rod detects enemies within 60 feet]

A Refuge? (Snarky DM Cayzle)
Friday August 15th, 2008 7:41:00 AM

Since entering the Trash level, the party has looked around quick-like, and Xenia has high-tailed it, with invisible quietude, for a look ahead. What she finds is detailed above.

Meanwhile, the rest of you in the party sense that you are a little more than somewhat exposed [perhaps nudged on just a bit by the DM's use of the cliched phrase, "sitting ducks."]. Granted, there are no mobs of undead in sight -- yet! -- but that does not mean you are safe.

Thinking back to the party's entrance to the Trash Level, Belkior recalls a strong feeling that -- while the Crimson Shields would most likely be allowed back in the Float Above at the conclusion of the mission -- without a cure, the residents of the Trash Level (both the quick and the preternaturally quicker) would have to remain therein, quarantined, until a cure is found.

Harley offers the wise notion that the party needs to get under cover. He looks at the two buildings with open doorways -- through one, the rosy glow of flames can be seen. "Hmmm," Harley seems to be pondering, "should we take refuge in the structurally sound building, or the one that is ready to go up in flames?"

Syr, Solara, and Florin have yet to weigh in on that question.

But wait! Wynn has some intelligence to bear! Using his rod of enemy detection, he moves from one side of the road to the other (to make best use of the rod's 60-foot range). He determines that the flaming building is free of enemies, while the one that is not in danger of combustion holds a single enemy. There are no enemies within the buildings that have been barred and shuttered -- seemingly from the inside!

[OOC: Well, well -- why is the DM so snarky today? Perhaps, in the immortal words of Arthur C. Clarke, it is the "ennui produced by ages of repetition; and an impish sense of fun," inspired by the occasion of his natal anniversary.]

Xenia (AC29, 68/68HP)
Friday August 15th, 2008 9:17:37 AM

OoC: Posting same action. Waiting for timeline to catch up.

"Wynn, I'm gonna fly down over the moat and see if these guys guarding the Under Ramp have any way of lowering part of the fire for a little bit."

"Maybe we can arrange for a little diversion when you get down here."

OoC: Happy Birthday.

Florin Jadenth
Friday August 15th, 2008 5:24:47 PM

Florin glances towards the burning building and frowns, "Getting burned alive isn't my idea of fun. What the chances that us haveing to fight that one enemy will lead to the others falling in on us?"

Florin is up for going to either building for cover but he really doesn't want to be BBQ'ed. Florin closes his eyes and thinks for a moment before speaking to Wynn, "From the sounds is there any open ground out there really from what Xenia said or is it like wall to wall undead?"

Florin glances around since there must be some rubble from the houses and such. He is looking for something like a large chunk of wood. (Something like part of a beam or pole, say 4ft or so long, Sturdy but not going to weigh like 6 tons either.)

Depending on what he finds Florin thinks about the smoke sticks he carries and thinks over his idea before nodding, "I have an idea depending on some factors here. Let us atleast find some shelter while I sort things out."

Florin's Question (Snarky DM Cayzle)
Friday August 15th, 2008 5:40:32 PM

Seems to Florin that from within the building, there is little likelihood that a quick fight will attract any attention.

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75]
Friday August 15th, 2008 10:37:47 PM

Wynn relates as much as he can of Xenia's report to Florin and the rest. "Seems like there are numerous bands of these undead at nearly every corner. It doesn't look good for a quick and east trip to the under-ramp." The bard continues studying the surroundings with his rod. "A single enemy hides in that building...might be a good idea to test it's mettle and see what we are dealing with" he suggests.

Harley (AC 28; HPs 85/85)
Friday August 15th, 2008 10:59:36 PM

Harley sees that the general consensus of the group is to find a hiding spot until Xenia gets back. He knows he is protected from fire damage, but the rest of the group isn't.

"Ok let's get in the fire free building, take care of the one enemy and then try to secure the ground floor. We can wait there until Xenia gets back and then decide our next course of action."

"Syr or Florin, once we get inside I will try to knock the creature down and then you guys beat the heck out of it."

With that, Harley moves towards the open doorway that does not have a fire within it.

Friday August 15th, 2008 11:02:47 PM

The halfling cleric nods in agreement with Wynn, seeing the wisdom of his thoughts. Belkior clears his throat while bouncing lightly to settle his armor. While checking the position of his wands the Paragon also ensures that his buckler is secure and his mace loose in its cradle.

"Let's go, quick and clean. Into that building, take out the undead and learn what we can about it. One way or the other, we need to know more about their strengths and weaknesses and this is a good chance."

Without waiting for the others, Belkior begins moving towards the building. He does, however, attempt to move with what little grace he possesses so that the roving bands of undead. That means he stays behind piles of rubble, buildings and whatever other cover is available. As he gets close, Belkior draws his mace and heads inside.

The Warehouse (DM Cayzle)  d20+15=32
Monday August 18th, 2008 8:06:20 AM

The party moves into the open building, knowing that some enemy is within. There is no lighting. How do you see in the dark?

Verbal map (no graphic map for this one): The bulding is 40 by 40 feet. It is an open warehouse. You entered in the center of the northern wall. There are stairs up to a second level in the northwest corner. There is a small office in the northeast corner. There is a big open space (25 x 25) in the center, but the walls and southern corners are stacked with boxes and barrels.

You may guess that this is a place to store goods destined to move in from upper levels or out to them.

Wynn says that the enemy is in the northwest. But you cannot see anything yet.

Tidbit for Al who is being patient. Xenia notes that one mob of undead near the fire moat includes a number of four-legged creatures. Is that a buffalo? And a lion?

Xenia (AC29, 68/68HP)
Monday August 18th, 2008 8:54:35 AM

OoC: Could I get a description of where Xenia is on the street? From where is she seeing these four footed things? Is she still up the street approaching the moated off area? Is she over the moat, but the guards are not paying any attention to her?

I still intend to have Xenia fly over the moat, speak to them, and then report back. I know it's more work for you, but if I have a sense of where she is in this process, I can at least roleplay what she's doing instead of hit the board with a one line post indicating that she's simply continuing with her action.

OoC: I've added a section on our Woldipedia for describing the peculiarities of Floating City. If anyone knows the correct spelling of Terriucci, Teruacci, Tearucci or whatever, you might go in and correct it. I've never been able to remember how to spell that.

OOC (DM Cayzle)
Monday August 18th, 2008 10:41:07 AM

Well, to be honest, Xenia is likely still flying toward the moat, maybe a couple hundred feet from it. Likely the guards beyond the flames have not yet seen her. I imagine she is flying at about 30-40 feet up, maybe halfway to the ceiling, but you can pick your altitude. She can see the beastish undead say 120-150 feet ahead near the moat.

Lady Solara HP 63/63 AC 27 (Barkskin +5)
Monday August 18th, 2008 11:07:34 AM

The Lady Solara moves gracefully with the rest of the party as they scamper into the beat up building. While following, she produces a bit of shell and begins to whisper some arcane words. With a flick of her wrist, the shell disappears and a light gray aura appears and is absorbed into her. (Cast Protection from Arrows)

"Oh, I can hardly see in here, gentlemen," she says as they enter the building. She delicately touches a wall to give herself some idea of her surroundings. "Would someone be so kind as to provide some light?"

"Look out, Wynn. I don't think what we got out there are just the Graymen types. I think there are undead animals out there. Maybe they can climb and stuff too"

"I'm just seconds away from the Under Ramp. I'm gonna zoom on and warn them guard folks that we're coming. See if there's any way they can get us over the fire moat. After that, I'll zip right back."

"You take care now. Love you."

And with that, the invisible rogue speeds on.

OoC: At 120-150ft away, Xenia should be to the beast undead in 1 or 2 rounds. The guards won't likely see Xenia at all as she's still invisible.

Clarification Needed (DM Cayzle)  d20+7=13 [secret DM roll]
Tuesday August 19th, 2008 7:30:34 AM

When Belkior cast his Hide From Undead, he cast it with this declaration: ""Everyone else, I'll conceal you from any afflicted that are already undead." (Aug 11)

Since then, Belkior, Wynn, Xenia, and Syr have listed the spell in their active effects. Florin, Harley, and Lady Solara have not! I need to know if anyone has refused the Hide From Undead spell, and I need to know that now, before posting a turn, for obvious reasons.

Also note, from the spell description: "If a warded creature attempts to turn or command undead, touches an undead creature, or attacks any creature (even with a spell), the spell ends for all recipients.

A four legged fiend (DM Carl)
Wednesday August 20th, 2008 6:14:52 AM

What Xenia sees. Apologies if some of this retreads what Cayzle has already posted, just trying to get the timelines matched again.

Highlight to display spoiler: {The invisible rogue swoops along Cutthroat lane, zeroing in on the pack of undead creatures ahead. Dropping lower she can clearly see that there are indeed undead animals with this pack; a mangy lion, a buffalo and several dogs and cats. Each has sunken red eyes, with black veins covering their dead gey skin. Their once-human counterparts seem to treat them no differently to any other of the undead creatures; whatever this "Creeping Death" disease is, it doesn't seem to discriminate.

Now she is closer she can see why the pack has gathered; they snarl and slobber over the bloody remains of a corpse, their faces and teeth stained scarlet. There are perhaps 15 of the undead creatures in the back, but as she watches more emerge from nearby buildings and alleyways, drawn by the kill.

Disgusted she rises once more and continues along Cutthroat lane. A dull roar comes from up ahead, and this end of the street is lit by a flickering orange glow. Smoke is thick in the air. Xenia rounds a tall building on her left, windows and doors boarded up, and sees an immense wall of flame ahead of her rising from the moat, blocking the path to the underamp. It rises up to 20 ft high, and the heat close up is intense, keeping back the ring of undead that surround it. One stumbles too close, and bursts into flames.

The flamewall roars; it will be hard to make herself heard over it. Xenia figures she will need to fly over to the other side to easily communicate with the guards she can just make out on the other side.

[For everyone but Xenia!]

Protected by Belkior's Hide From Undead spell. everyone except Florin is invisible to the lone creature in the warehouse. But that one does see Florin, and attacks!

It is fast! Not like a zombie! It might remind those versed in Undead lore of a ghoul or ghast, but faster and stronger. And the details vary -- details you see for the first time up close. Like the poor Underlord who sought death over undeath, this thing's grey skin is laced with black veins. But unlike the Underlord, this thing's sunken red eyes roll with the mad desire to kill and consume!

It races fast across the room, and it catches Florin flat-footed (because it attacks first in combat). It dances over barrels and crates, through the group, and leaps for Florin's throat.

What is Florin's AC without a dex bonus?

The undead thing bites and claws at Florin, making a full attack. It bites AC26 (for 16 damage), claws AC26 (for 8 damage), and claws AC29 (for 8 damage). Its AC is 18 (because it is charging). For every hit, Florin must make a Fort save vs DC18 -- unless he has the Divine Health ability.

[DM note: So far, the undead has exhibited three special abilities:
Unnatural Quickness -- always attacks first in combat, and foes are flat-footed unless they have Uncanny Dodge.
Acrobatic Charge -- can charge over obstacles and does not have to move in a straight line.
Pounce -- Makes a full attack at the end of a charge.]

"Hey, you guys! Crimson Shield, coming in!" She shouts the warning while still outside the perimeter of the fire, and then flies over the wall and into the center of the circle of the moat. From up above, she watches the guards for a while. She listens to their conversations, watches the movement of their lips for whispers.

Then she observes their reactions as she announces herself. "Hi. I'm Xenia. The Crimson Shields are on their way."

The halfling cleric moves close to Florin so that his protective magics will help the paladin. However, Belkior will try to move in such a way that his Magic Circle spell doesn't impinge upon the undead, in case it is extraplanar in origin.

Once he is in position, Belkior studies the undead in order to learn what he can about it.

But for the undead shell you wear at the moment, you have to do alot better then that you walking rot bag" Florin also keeps his eyes open to see what effects his attacks have, makeing note of everything he sees here.

We ain't dead yet (DM Carl)
Thursday August 21st, 2008 5:13:43 AM

Checking to ensure there are no flying undead in sight (there aren't) Xenia climbs higher. Now she can see the closest two guards, one fat, one thin, both in ill-fitting breast plates with halberds. Amazingly, despite the carnage without, these two seem to be betting on the flipping of a gold piece.

"Hey, you guys! Crimson Shield, coming in!"

At Xenia's words the pair scramble to their feet, pushing helmets out of eyes and trying not to trip over one another's weapons as they bring them to bear.

Ros (fearful): You hear that, Guil?
Guil: Uh-huh, I heard it, but I don't see nuttin'.
Ros: They said Crimson Shields, right? Ain't that the crew the captain said might be comin'?
Guil: I dunno Ros, all I see out there is them creepers. Think it might be a trick?
Ros (incredulous): Guil, they're blood-crazed zombie dead things. What sort of tricks you reckon they're gonna pull? Rabbit out of a hat?
Guil: Saw a lady in half?
Ros: Well yeah, fair enough, they might do that one...

"Hi. I'm Xenia. The Crimson Shields are on their way."

Guil: Yaah!
Ros (pointing his halberd in completely the wrong direction): Who said that? Show yerself!

From last round: Rolling miss chances for Florin (miss on 1-20 with Displacement) Nope -- all three hit, sorry! Florin's divine ability makes him immune to the undeath that infected the Underlord. And Florin's two blows all land soundly (no damage reduction), inflicting a total of 33 damage -- not enough to destroy the creature, but major damage nonetheless.

This round, the undead thing attacks again. The bite hits (AC27), and so does one claw (ACs 20 and 24). The bite inflicts 12 hp damage, and the claw, 7.

Florin's miss chances this time: nope, both attacks that hit did really hit.

The creature's AC rises to 20 now that it is not charging.

Solara steps back; Belkior steps up. The paragon helps Florin with his auras, and he looks really closely at the undead thing that is unaware of him. It is no undead that he has studied or heard of. The blackened veins that lace through the thing's skin seem to be tough (contributing to the things very good natural armor, Belkior guesses). It is not mindless, but it seems crazed with bloodlust -- and does not seem to notice or care if it is wounded.

Xenia (AC29, 68/68HP)

"There's just two guards here, Wynn," the rogue reports. "The don't look too dangerous. I'm gonna ask them if there's any way to temporarily lower the fire so you guys can get across. Even if there is, though, there's a lot of them Wack Dead out there roaming just outside. Have to be careful that we don't let any in."

OoC: I had to get out my copy of R&G just for this post. ^_^

"There is an art to the building up of suspense," the invisible rogue replies to the two guards from her place above them in the air.

"Heads?"

"I'm scouting for the group, and I gotta go back through that nest of crazies out there, so I'm not gonna drop my invisible. But, if you're wondering where I'm at, try behind you and up."

"A'fore I head back, I gotta know whether there's a way to damp down this fire moat thing so we can get across. Not all of us can fly, you see, and I don't want any Shields getting trapped on the wrong side of the moat with the fresh meat club out having their little party, if you get my meaning."

"Belkior do you recognize this undead? I have not heard of any undead that can move that fast. I hope they all aren't like this. We will not be able to fight 100s of these things hand-to-hand."

Harley looks at the opening they just came through. If there is a door he will close it and attempt to secure it.

"We should check the ground level for more doors and try to secure them."

Turning to the bard, "Wynn, you might want to give Xenia a heads up about their explosive speed in case she tries something?"

What the Captain said (DM Carl)
Friday August 22nd, 2008 4:58:31 AM

Ros whips around and glares at a spot two feet over Xenia's left shoulder. "Invisible. Right. I knew that." he mumbles. "Private Roselcrant at yer service 'mam." He performs a salute that almost knocks his helmet off. Now that he's closer Xenia notices a most peculiar smell about him that near turns her stomach.

Guil looks down at the coin. "She's right you know, Ros; it is heads. Again."

"That's another copper bit you owe me then, ain't it?" grins Ros, before remembering what he's supposed to be doing. He turns back to where he thinks Xenia is hovering. "Ah yes, crossing the moat. The Captain told us about this. What was it he said Guil?"

Guil tosses a copper coin to Ros, who drops his halberd to catch it. Scrunching his forehead in concentration Guil recites;

""You two idiots can man the front line. Be sure to remember to scream if the grey men break through and eat you, so we know they're coming.""

"No no, before that."

""Can the two halfwits who polished all our armour and weapons with rancid goose fat please step forward."

"After that."

"Oh, you mean "If those Crimson Shield heroes make it through, we'll probably have to lower the drawbridge to let 'em in. But with the grey men waiting on the other side it's going to be risky.""

Ros nods, smiling. "Yup, that's the one."

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75] Hide from Undead  d20+12=18
Friday August 22nd, 2008 7:54:00 AM

"Xenia", we've secured the warehouse by the entrance. The undead we faced here was different than any zombie Belkior has aver seen. It moves real fast and can attack from almost anywhere. Be careful, and don't assume you can out run or out manouver them! The bard buries his worries for Xenia and turns to the task at hand. "So if we can't just make a dash for safety, how will we get there? Just walk on by, all invisible and quiet?"

Wynn searches his memory for any tales or lore about undead like these. [Bardic knowledge=18]

"Drawbridge. Right. Show me where it is so we can come in fast and spot on if we need to." Xenia tips her invisible head to one side, listening to thoughts transmitted by Wynn.

"I'm headed back now, but you guys watch out," she says, after checking out the drawbridge. "The Shields say that them Gray Guys attack fast and can come outta nowhere."

"Wonder what they saw?"

"We'll be back inside half an hour."

With that, the dark rogue rises up for the return trip.

"They got a drawbridge, Wynn. To get us over the moat. I think that's gonna be a problem. I bet them Whack Deadies are just waiting for this drawbridge thingo to come down a'fore swarming the place. And it's probs gonna take time for the bridge to crank up and then crank back down again."

"Get folks thinking 'bout how we can maybe get across without them lowering the bridge. Or maybe we could hide the bridge in fog so the Deaders don't know it's coming down."

"I think I know which warehouse you're talking 'bout. I'll come up that side of the street and make sure nothing's prowling the roofs 'tween you and the Under Ramp."

Area secure (DM Carl)
Friday August 22nd, 2008 11:58:09 AM

Florin despatches the grey creature cleanly, to everyone's relief. Belkior heals him, then examines the creature. It shows no signs of reccuperating. He does notice the black veins that cover the creature though: they seem unusually tough and large.

Harley is able to pull the warehouse door closed without making too much noise; it won't lock, but at least no wandering creatures will spot them inside. Peering out it doesn't look as if the fight has attracted any attention. His examination of the ground floor reveals a back room off this entrance area, a large storage space two stories tall filled with crates, bricks and long planks of wood. All is quiet and still.

Wynn gets the latest intel from Xenia. Somehow the party need to make it to the moat and cross it, with or without the drawbridge, and without bringing down hordes of lightning fast undead upon themselves and the defenders of the Undercity. How will they manage it?

Lady Solara encourages the party to get moving, and Syr complies, climbing the stairs to the first floor. After a short pause, and for want of anything better to do, the remainder of the party follow. At the top there's a small office, empty and in complete disarray. There are two windows which, if anyone cares to look out of them, offer a northerly view over Cutthroat Lane. A ladder up the eastern wall leads to a trapdoor in the ceiling.

OoC: Translation for anyone who doesn't happen to know this. In any country, aside from, I think, the US, "First Floor" means the floor of a building up off the ground. So, in the US, "First Floor" would be what we call the "Second Floor." Everywhere else, what we call the "First Floor" is called the "Ground Floor".

Hope I didn't confuse the issue.

Florin looks to Belkior and smiles to him, "Thanks Belkior for the healing and backup."

Florin looks at the undead ,makeing note of things once more in his mind before moveing the blade of his bastard sword to the undead creatures neck and gives a quick and hard shove down, going to remove the things head, "Peace be to the victim of this and pray that Domi smiles on him along with Gargul takes him in his arms in the after life." With this deed done he turns to the others, "Your right Syr, we should see how far we might beable to get by roof top or such. The closer we can get the better off we are."

Florin looks to Wynn and speaks to him, "I have some smoke sticks, 4 of them infact. If you would, ask Xenia if they might be of use to help get us there? She maybe can drop them from the sky to add cover." Florin smiles to the bard, knowing the man must be worried about Xenia too.

Looking to Syr, Florin speaks to him, "Think the smoke sticks might be of use in that way? Sooner or later our feet are going to have to touch ground and run for it I expect. Not inless someone can summon flying creatures that can carry atleast one at a time."

Florin will move to the roof also now and looks over the area.

"If Syr finds that the roof is clear, let's make our way across the roofs as far as we can go. Once we run out of space that way, Florin, you can get some flying magic and draw the undead away so that we can cross and the guards can drop the drawbridge. Then you fly over the fire."

Monday August 25th, 2008 11:03:08 AM

"I have fly spell that I can cast to helpus cross the moat."

"i also have Obscuring Mist to help with the diversion."

Up on the roof (DM Carl)
Monday August 25th, 2008 5:33:01 PM

The party continue to mull over ideas for how best to bypass their undead foes. Flight, mist and decoys are suggested.

Syr leads the way up onto a flat roof, which connects directly to the adjacent building. About 15 feet above you is an open window which should allow easy ingress (Climb check DC 20, DC 5 if you get a rope up). As far as Syr can tell continuing in this direction will eventually get you to the drawbridge, though from where you are there is no way to tell if you path is straightforward. Perhaps your scout can help.

----

Xenia is shown the drawbridge, such as it is. It's a 20' tall, 7' wide sheet of metal, secured to a trolley-like apparatus. It simply wheels into position, the metal sheet is lowered, and folks cross over it. To retract one simply pulls the trolley back. She guesses it's likely to get mighty hot making the crossing.

Heading back up Cutthroat Lane Xenia examines the party's route. No sign of the creatures on the rooftops, and the buildings adjoin for most of the route. However there is problem close to the party's warehouse. Two buildings, separated by a 10 foot wide alleyway. Both buildings are 5 storeys high, reaching right to the Trash Level ceiling. The party will need to work out some way to cross, otherwise it's back down to street level.

Belkior - (AC 24 (26 vs. evil); HP 91) - Hide from Undead, Magic Circle vs. Evil, Purifying Aura  d20+1=7 ;
Monday August 25th, 2008 10:05:00 PM

The halfling cleric looks up at the window overhead, roughly five times his height above the floor. Belkior shakes his head before looking at Syr and the others who are standing with him.

"I'm not getting up there. Not unless someone else goes up first and ties a rope off. Or, maybe, Xenia could come back to drop a rope down."

"Come to think of it, it is worthwhile checking to see if there are any undead in that building before we climb in there? We should be okay, but we'd have to leave Florin over here."

If someone provides a rope, Belkior will make his best effort to climb up. With many slips and near falls, he just barely hauls himself up the rope.

Drawbridge! What drawbridge! They could do better just jumpin' 'cross.

"Hey, Wynn. We got another problem. That drawbridge they got don't do nothing for the heat. Fact is, it's, like, metal, so that's gonna get hot too. Ask around how many of the guys can spell up 'gainst fire. I think we gotta do that. Or fly over. Or, maybe port ov ... "

"Uh oh. I'm I found a spot that's gonna be kinda hard to cross over. It's, like, this ten-foot gap with walls going all the way up to the ceiling of the level."

"You think maybe you guys could smash a hole through the walls? If you can, you could jump across. I got a spider climbing spell someone could use to stick to the other side and cut a hole in there. Whatcha think?"

Monday August 25th, 2008 11:34:11 PM

Once the rest of the group is atop the warehouse, he looks over at the bard, "Wynn, are you still able to use your rod that pointed out the last bad guy. It hasn't been that long since we ran for the warehouse. The Lady here has done a fine job of urging us on. Try it on this other building here?"

Assuming Wynn gives the okay, Syr motions to Florin. "Hey big guy, I could use the assist. Can you stand below that window with your hands on your knees?" With or without the paladin, Syr takes a short run and leaps up to the window to pull himself in (climb 22 or 20). Once there, he checks out the room quickly (spot18), before lowering a rope down for the others.

Florin smiles at Belkior's comment about him waiting while the others find out if there are more undead and nods, "I don't mind, if there is more then one then it could be a rather bad fight. Those things are way to fast, pack abit of a punch but the speed is something else."

Florin moves over to give Syr a hand to get up to the window. Placeing his backpack on the ground for the moment so if Syr is planning to use his back then he won't step on the backpack and possibly break anything. After this Florin will take the time to put it back on and wait for the others to go and check out the building of enemies, speaking up to Syr, "Now remember to give a shout if you guys find anything."

Lady Solara HP 63/63 AC 27 (Barkskin +5, Protection from Arrows, Hide from Undead)  d20=15 ; d20+2=3 ;
Tuesday August 26th, 2008 9:16:10 AM

The Lady Solara glares at the dangling rope like she wanted to slap its face, if it had one. With a sigh, she clutches the rope with both hands and delicately proceeds to move up the rope. (Climb 15) At the top, she smacks her hands together and moves out of the way for the next person up.

She smiles at Syr, a radiant well-proportioned smile that sets off her dark eyes. "That was fun. I've never climbed a rope before." Then she turns from the monk to scan the streets below for enemies. (Spot 3)

Harley (AC 28; HPs 85/85)  d20-5=-1 ;
Tuesday August 26th, 2008 3:19:40 PM

Harley eyes the rope and his armor. This is not going to be easy. He stows his buckler and his flail. He grabs the rope, but the bulkiness of his armor is too much for him to climb.

Climb -1

"I can cast fly spell on myself now to move around. I will not then be able to cast it on someone else however."

Harley will cast fly on himself if there is no other way to get him up the rope and into the window. He will use his extend rod to double the duration of the spell.

Who's coming for dinner? (DM Carl)  d20+10=14 ;
Tuesday August 26th, 2008 3:27:58 PM

The party clamber in through the window into someone's dining room, Syr leading the way. The place is abandoned, but you hear sounds from upstairs; it sounds like someone dragging something heavy, perhaps to barricade themselves in? Or maybe a horde of undead monsters hauling freshly slaughtered carcasses across the floor?

The room is rather nicely furnished, at least compared to other dwellings you've seen on the Trash level. Stairs lead up the north wall, and head down to the south of the room. There are doors at the end of both stairways, both closed. And it looks like someone's pushed a welsh dresser down the stairs heading down, which effectively blocks the door. There are windows on the far side of the room, which look out over an alleyway 10 feet across. Another window in the north wall looks out over the street.

Lady Solara is far too flustered at the new-found excitement of rope climbing and making eyes at Syr to worry too much about looking for pursuing monsters.

Harley casts Fly on himself to get up where climbing has failed.

------

Xenia hovers across from the alleyway, trying to figure out how the party will get across. No need for holes in walls though; there are windows a-plenty to use, if only the party can cross the intervening 10 feet of empty air 3 storeys up.

"Hey guys." Xenia's voice comes from the street side of the window. "It's me. Xenia," she warns.

"Mind the gap, huh? You're gonna have to cross over somehow. Maybe we can rig up the same sort of rope and harness that we did for the lightning chasm in that Boydos Tower. It's only ten feet. Crossing should be easy."

"I'm gonna check ahead," she announces before drifting to the nearest and most likely window.

Cautiously, the rogue listens first before whispering to her ring to begin Blinking. Then she slips through the window. She reaches for the flap of her haversack, and there it is, a slim wand, right on top.

Flying to one corner of the room, she speaks the trigger word to leave a spot of light before checking the next adjoining room for danger.

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75] Hide from Undead  d20+14=17 ;
Tuesday August 26th, 2008 7:13:00 PM

Wynn is relieved to hear Xenia call out and reaffirm what his telepathic link has already told him...that she is safe and well.

He relays to the group all that Xenia has revealed to him and then climbs through the open window. He secures a rope for any that have yet to follow.

"Sounds like someone upstairs" he points out the obvious. If it has been less than 10 minutes since he first activated the rod, the bard will scan up the stairs to see if the source of the noise is a danger to them, If it has been longer than ten minutes, Wynn will navigate the blocked stairway and advance up the stairs to determine who is up there.

"Hello...I'm Wynn Brightsong. Can we help you? " he calls through the door in his friendliest voice. [Diplomacy=17]. The bard hopes that whoever is trapped above might have some useful information about how to reach the under-ramp.

Aura of Courage (Immune to fear and +4 morale bonus to everyone in 10ft against fear effects.)
Divine Health (Immune to diseases, even super natural ones)

Florin waits till he knows it's okay to come on up and then sets to trying his hand at the rope. He really should work on his climbing skill too he thinks as he does this.

(Climb:12)

Once up Florin looks to the others and looks to the stairs before speaking up, "Well, so far so good. Lets hope a whole bunch of those uglies aren't waiting any where though." Florin doesn't like undead but is in no mood to fight a horde of them after seeing their battle effectiveness.

Belkior - (AC 24 (26 vs. evil); HP 91) - Hide from Undead, Magic Circle vs. Evil, Purifying Aura  d20+6=7 ;
Tuesday August 26th, 2008 10:53:39 PM

The halfling cleric looks over at Harley waits for the others to enter the room, peering out through the windows. Belkior thinks that there may be several ways of crossing to the neighbouring house - flying everyone over, having Harley or Xenia take a rope over and then climbing across, or something like that. Of course, the people (or things) upstairs may be friendly and allow them to rig a rope to slide down and across.

Belkior shouts out to the people upstairs, shortly after Wynn speaks!

"Open the door! We need your help!"

Lady Solara HP 63/63 AC 27 (Barkskin +5, Protection from Arrows, Hide from Undead)
Wednesday August 27th, 2008 9:28:48 AM

Elsephine puts her foot down(DM Carl)  d20+10=16 ; d20+10=15 ;
Wednesday August 27th, 2008 3:30:55 PM

The party examine their surroundings and plan how best to get to the next building. Spirits soar as Xenia's voice is heard outside the window. Several plans are put forward; Lady Solara suggests magic, Belkior and Xenia suggests a rope or enlisting the help of whoever is upstairs.

Wynn, having used his rod to confirm no foes are upstairs, offers assistance. Belkior pitches in, with less than exemplary results.

Silence reigns for a few moments. Then a scared female voice from upstairs calls out "Go away!"

A male voice chips in "For goodness sake Elsephine, they're hardly going to be those monsters if they're talking to us, are they?"

"How do you know? They might be infected, and just waiting for us to come out so they can can eat us, or infect us, or whatever it as that monsters do. Go away! We don't want your nasty disease! Go and spread it somewhere else!"

"Now dearest..."

"Jorge Alberknot, don't you "now dearest" me. If you know what's good for you you'll push the bed against that door and be quick about it."

After a pause you hear more scraping and grunting, followed by "Well would you at least get off it first? It's heavy enough as it is."

---

Xenia scouts ahead. She blinks through the wall, sets a light and investigates the next room. There are signs of a struggle here; amidst torn mattresses and pillows she sees splashes of blood, and near the wall a human forearm, gnawed down almost clean to the bone. She sees and hears no sign of movement though; it seems whatever did this has gone.

Xenia (AC29, 68/68HP)  d20+8=20 ;

"There's an arm up here, Wynn. Looks like someone's been eatin' on it. Means they do come up here. I'm gonna find a way to seal this area off so nothing sneaks on us while we're crossing."

The rogue examines the layout of the rooms, looking for a door or other point of entry that can be blocked off while the group makes their way from one side of the gap to the other.

After seeing to the task of sealing the area off, she returns with her coil of rope and searches for a place to secure it.

Belkior - (AC 24 (26 vs. evil); HP 91) - Hide from Undead, Magic Circle vs. Evil, Purifying Aura
Wednesday August 27th, 2008 10:19:23 PM

The halfling cleric looks over at Wynn, hoping that his words weren't what provoked the response from the woman upstairs. Belkior glances upwards before speaking.

"Do you think that they will safe here, if they have barricaded themselves in? Maybe safer, in a lot of ways than if we took them with us. Or do you think that we should attempt to persuade them to join us as we make our way to safety?"

Florin Jadenth AC:23 HP:108/134
Thursday August 28th, 2008 12:03:26 AM

Cloak of Displacement (minor: 20% miss chance)
Aura of Courage (Immune to fear and +4 morale bonus to everyone in 10ft against fear effects.)
Divine Health (Immune to diseases, even super natural ones)
Life Shield+2 (Bonus to AC vs Undead)

Florin frowns at the comments made and moves to where the stairs is blocked off, "My name is Florin Jadenth of house Jadenth. I'm a paladin of Domi and undead hunter. None of my friends are infected and I am immune to any disease, let alone have the ability to remove a disease once. It's your choice to stay or not but considering the place is crawling with those creatures and such there are a few things you must consider. First, how long can you stay there, do you have enough food and water to live for awhile because I don't see these creatures going anywhere any time soon. So your choice, stay or take your chances with us."

Florin looks to Belkior, Syr and the others, "I hate to admit it but as the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink...in this case it's their choice to come along or take their chances." Florin also figures that the sooner the group finds a way to destroy this disease the safer other people will be from it that are held up like these two people upstairs.

Florin calls up once more, "If you stay and need it then I have some rations that I can give you to hold you over for alittle while. You only need to give me a little space to pass them to you." He figures the two are atleast smart enough to know that any food should be safe of the rations nature.
