Finally, Back at Oddholme (JohnP) Sunday August 3rd, 2008 11:55:10 PM
The Bloodpack push through a stand of grass and, finally, broach the magical barrier that protects Oddholme from observation and magical scrying. The curving grass dome is visible above the grass, seemingly calm and undisturbed from when the Bloodpack left. Still, everyone knows that Horvis had been headed in this direction so it may be that looks are deceiving.
Slowly, with more care, the 'Pack continue onwards. Finally, they are at the edge of the grass outside the main entrace of the grass dome. The dark opening seems quiet, a cool and refreshing respite from the oppressive heat of the Sargrass. Still, danger may lurk inside. If it does, the Bloodpack may need to make precautions. Or they could simply charge in blindly.
DM OOC - Get those character sheets updated and sent to me, folks. Nothing interesting will happen until I get most of them!

Tishe's brown eyes flash as she gets ready to rebuff Trellus. "The pattern is very clear if you just stop looking at one thread at a time...", but then she stops and gets thoughtful. "No, you are right, slow and steady wins the race. Don't want Horvis to have a trap set for us after all!"
Her mercurial attention moves to the task at hand. tishe' puts Wart on her sage-cloaked shoulder and tries to remain very alert for any actions, her newly recharged Staff of Frost in her hands... (Spot: 27, Listen: nat 20!)

After the goodbye's are shared with te Manfri the Pack travels back to Oddholme where they have left Murdock and Ayreon in charge of cleaning the place up an dcreating an outpost for the Bloodpack and any others that would seek shelter.
They hope to find them all in good health knowing that Horvis escpaed in that direction... A warning message to Murdock should warn them... However... The answer is even more puzzeling...
Then after a day of trotting through the grasses our friends once again lay eyes upon the familiar looking grass Dome... OddHolme...

Trellus can only grin and shake his head at Tishe's now familiar "talk first and think later" reaction to his comments. But the grin fades as the group passes that invisible point where endless Grass suddenly turns into Oddholme.
Standing in the last of the grass beside Yanosh, the cleric surveys the scene.
"Anybody with a Tear got a read on Murdock or Ayreon?" he asks softly. "Or anybody got some magical eyes to go in ahead of us?"

Olaf keeps his eyes focused on the surroundings, attempting to provide some scouting cover by ranging slightly ahead as they converge on Oddholme. Before he goes forward, he answers Trellus, "I ain't go no magical eyes, but I can sneak around a bit, if ya want."

The Bloodpack prepare to enter the grass dome. From the outside, Yanosh and Tishe' don't see any sign of the passage of the evil druid, regardless of excuses like "sun in the eyes". Still, since the Bloodpack last saw Horvis fleeing in the form of an air elemental, it's not likely that he would leave signs of his passage. Still, Tishe' can spot no sign of the disturbance that a small whirlwind would cause. The theurge does hear the nervous twittering of a bat, presumably from somewhere inside the dome.
Trellus wisely suggests contacting Murdock inside the dome using the Dragon Tear and when Grymash does so, he receives an almost immediate response.
"You're here already? Of course, I'm here and we've been waiting for you. No sign of 'Horvis', whatever it was."
As Olaf, Flea and Vayine scout ahead into the dome, they also see no signs of Horvis passing through. Of course, they very likely didn't see the full range of the shapes that Horvis could assume. Flea's gnomish ears also detect the nearly inaudible sound of a bat from somewhere deeper inside the dark passages of the dome.
Very soon, the returning Bloodpack are met by Murdock and Ayreon. The two confirm that they have seen no sign of anyone entering or leaving the grass dome, at least not by the main entrance.
"We got your messages. Tell us about this 'Horvis', and what happened when you went back to Rattledam. Anything that we should know about?"

Trellus chuckles ruefully. "Light, dudes. Yeah, I'd say there are one or two threads in the loom."
As they enter Oddholme, the blond cleric fills in the two drow on everything that has transpired thus far - the return and subsequent trial at Rattledam, the Bloodpack's voluntary bansihment from the city, the ambush in the caves, the meeting with Araxo and the manfri, the battle with Horvis, the speeches by both Gimp and Araxo in the aftermath of that battle.
"We think Horvis came into the Plains through that Portal," Trellus finishes. "And probably escaped back out through it." The man rubs the back of his head, while thinking out loud. "Which means he can control the thing, and come and go as he pleases. And that's a problem."

The dwarf of gargul feels uneasy about the bat. It does not seem like it is a natural things that would be occuring. Can druids turn into bats? Maybe he is here setting a trap? he thinks to himself. he looks around and listens for it some more, while the others have a conversation.

Flea nods in acknowledgement and welcome when she spies Murdock, however her mind is preoccupied by the sound she heard.
"I don't know nothin' 'bout flying rats," she says looking to Tishe' and Gillan. "Druid's and Rangers know more 'bout animals, right?" Flea hopes her pack-mates might be able to provide her with a little more information on the thing making the squeek. "Don't 'member it from being here before."
There were a lot of weird creatures, but the pack had pretty much cleared the place, or at least investigated around and decided what was okay and what was't/. The rogue listens a little more closely (Listen=25) and wanders off in search of the sound. "Anyone coming?" she invites, not really paying attention is anyone is following her, or if she is alone as she goes in search of the creature making the sounds, though she figures Olaf and Yanosh might be up for exploring. Vayine moves up with the others. he seems different some how. His thick metal armor seems to be missing. he moves slowly his thick bladed sword and shield standing out from his newly acquired thick black robes. a small metal holy symbol of Gargul dangles around his neck.
"The one we are looking for has the ability to change shape. Each of you (looking to the two that stayed at Oddholme) What are your names, Why did you stay here, and how did we come to find this place. Also Please dispay your chests to the party. " Vayine seems weary of both of his old friends but after witnessing the ex druids power he feels it's better to be safe.

Trellus provides a summary of what happened to Murdock and Ayreon while the others watch for their reactions. Vayine isn't so trusting, suspecting that one or the other of the pair could be Horvis in disguise. However, when asked, both Murdock and Ayreon present a convincing description of their past with the party and how they came to find Oddholme. Even more, Murdock is able to display the Tear on his chest.
Flea and Olaf decide to explore inside, looking for signs that someone (or something has been inside). Neither of the pair notice very much amiss and the twittering of the bat diminishes as they move farther inside. Still, it's impossible to tell whether the creature is flying silently overhead or has stayed close to the entrance and the abundant insect life of the Sargrass.
Once they get to the portal room, however, the sharp eyes of the gnome notice something ... she's not sure exactly what ... that seems different with the portal. When she looks close, Flea sees some unsettlign signs in the portal room. As for the rest of the examination, it depends whether the pair return to get assistance from their fellows.

Tishe' shakes off her daydraming bemusement and also follows the others to the Alter Chamber. "I'm not worried about the bat. If we investigated every animal that druids can shape into, we would become mush more paranoid than we are now!" Thinking about being even more paranoid, Tishe' actually giggles at the thought!
Inside the chamber, Tishe' casts See Invisible on herself to be even more aware of anything that may be out of place in the chamber. She then looks around thuroghly to see if there is something she can find out to support her packmates.
She suddenly cocks her head and listens hard again. "That is not a bat that would ever be in the Sargrass on its own. It is either Horvis, one of his minions, or accidentally brought here from the Portal. In any case, it may prove a clue as to our next weaves."

Flea looks around the portal room and gets a creepy feeling. Unfortunately the rogue can't quite put her finger on the problem. Someone or something has marked their passing on the floor of the room, but the rogue isn't much good at figuring out who or what.
"Someone's been here recently, I think," she says not particularly brightly. Then calling in a louder voice, "can someone come and help us?"
Listening to Tishe' the gnome decides the room warrants a better search.

The Bloodpack assemble in the portal room trying to determine what has happened here. Even though virtually everyone can see signs that at least two creatures have been in the room, they can't tell much more than that. The only reason that Flea and the others can tell the number of creatures is that one set of footprints is quite large while the other is small, like those left by Flea.
Tishe' realizes that the bat that they heard near the entrance to the grass dome isn't native to the Sargrass. Her conclusions about the origins of the bat may, or may not, be correct but there is a strong possibility that the bat could be a clue for further investigations. The theurge's examination with See Invisible doesn't yield anything of interest.
Trellus casts a spell to test the magical auras of the room. Again, he is nearly knocked to his knees by the strength of the conjuration auras that surround the device upon the floor, confirming his suspicions that the device is a means of teleporting. The strength suggests that the device has been used recently, certainly within the past day. With some time and study, Trellus is certain that he and Tishe' could figure this thing out.
The question is, though, does the Bloodpack want to study this thing now or do something else?

Tishe' is very interested in finding more about the bat that was near the entrance to Oddholme. "I want to try and capture it to be able to see what the bat knows. And if it is Horvis... well, I don't want to weave this pick alone."
She waits for Trellus or Gilan to acknowledge this is a good idea before putting her plan in motion.
1) Tishe' wants to go to the entrance of Oddholme and spontaneously cast Summon Nature Ally III with her Rod of Extend twice, summoning five small air elementals for 14 rounds, and instructs them to search an area around the entrance to a range of 700 feet out (taking 7 rounds at normal move of 100 feet per round and able to Spot the bat) for the unusual bat. 1a) If there are packmates that will fly out with the elementals to capture the bat, Tishe' will instruct the elementals to continue expanding the search to find the bat until the spells end. 2) When found the elemental should turn into a whirlwind and attempt to grapple the bat. She will then cast a Summon Monster IV spell for a Celestial Giant Eagle (for 7 rounds) and instructing (in Celestial) to fly after any air elemental in whirlwind form, grapple the bat nearest the elemental and bring it back to Tishe'. 3) Finally, Tishe' readies her Animate Rope, Dominate Animal, and Wand of Speak with Animals to be able to retain and speak with the bat (if that is what it truely is...)

Grymash then turn his gaze to the Sargrass itself, hoping to see if the bounty of the plains can provide the components needed.
Listening to Grymash's suggestion, Trellus ponders for a while before answering, idly rubbing the back of his head as he does.
"I can't cast anything until tomorrow, and I can't do all of Oddholme, just a room." The cleric looks about the Portal room. "And while it'd keep Summoned Creatures out, I don't think it'll keep Horvis out. I need to think about this one. The magic dome around Oddholme seems to prevent teleportation, except for this Portal."
Tishe makes her suggestion, which Trellus also thinks long about, before shaking his head.
"Let's you and me try to figure out what's weaving with the Portal," he counters. "I think we can, sooner than later. Everyone else, keep your eyes open as well. Something is up in here, AND we got company. So if anyone can locate that bat, feel free."
With that, the blond man turns to continue his examination of the Portal.

"Maybe I can be of some help, Tishe'?" Flea volunteers. It's been a long time since she's spoken with any animals, and none from the Sargrass before. Really, just some badgers back home...
Flea listens again (Listen=16) then using her innate ability (which she'd only used on burrowing animals before)...and some of her newly honed skills as a musician, she tries to locate the bat and create a magical affect that will fascinate the creature. (Perform=13, bat Will Save vs DC 13. If fail, bat sits quietly and listens to Flea orate, taking no other actions.

While Trellus tries to concentrate on studying the portal, everyone else seems intent on finding and capturing the bat that has been flittering around inside the grass dome. The blond cleric runs his fingers through his hair and figures that it might take him a good several hours of study before he can figure this out ... or, he might have an immediate epiphany and determine how to work the thing right away.
The others, as stated, make plans for capturing the bat. Tishe' has an elaborate plan involving multiple summoned creatures until Trellus persuades her to concentrate on the portal. Some of the others seem to be relying upon brute force or hiding. Flea can't hear anything.
Grymash had suggested casting Hallow to protect the area of the portal but Trellus replied that he couldn't do much until the following day. Since there would be considerable time, effort and costly materials needed to cast the spell, Grymash suggests that he head out into the Sargrass by himself to begin gathering. It's not clear if he actually does so, however.
DM REMINDER - Get those character sheets updated! Either on-line or off, but get it done! Or else you'll be subjected to days of DM posts describing the esoteric nature of the portal as Trellus and Tishe' gradually learn more about it.

As Grymash patrols the halls of Oddholme, he cant help but feel pride in their new home. He thinks of when more come to call this home as well. Traitors of Rattledam would certainly be welcome. Well, all except Galafar. Being a massive dome, like Rattledam, he wonders where the trappings of a home are located. Things like: furnishings, water wells, grain bins, mill, root cellars, ovens an so on. In fact, Grymash hasn't had a chance to sit down since he was here. He then gets the idea to call upon his deity to help him locate one such item that may lead to the location of others ... "Gry wish ta find uh chair ... shady comfy one!"

Gilan had been strangely quiet lately and most of it was due to the fact that he was still coming to grips with his changes. Being back with his pack was also something that he was trying to get back into the habit of as he had not thought to be with them again so soon...his training had taken less time than he had expected.
As he watches the others work he finds that he has little to do himself, so he falls back on his one true hobby...carving. After doing that for awhile he turns to creating a few last minute potions that might be of use to the group in the future. Yes, he feels he has a new duty to his pack...to help in taking care of them. Though he does make himself available to help out in anyway that he can with the projects of the others...all they need to do is ask.

[One final thing. That is an apology to all of you for disappearing without any warning. My internet provider just decided to drop me because I was over my minute limit for the month. I found out that I was only allowed 9000 minutes, but this is for the use of my internet as well as my phone as well. Not a good thing as my brother and I make a lot of use of our internet. Olaf decides to study the portal like Tishe' and Trellus. Later on, Gilan joins them in their deliberations. With time and collaboration, the trio are able to make some progress in deciphering the operation of the device. They recognize that the symbols surrounding the portal are High Woldian glyphs, but only Tishe' and Gilan understand most of the glyphs. A bit of fiddling finds that the symbols can be depressed, slightly, and they conclude that pressing a combination of the glyphs would probably activate the portal. What triggers the portal, after activation, is still unknown.
Yanosh continues to look around the room that contains the portal. The shifting shadows make observation difficult and the dwarf isn't able to spot anything, even with his darkvision. Vayine does the same, without any greater success. While this has been going on, Flea has been trying to encourage everyone's efforts.
While this has been going on, Grymash has been patrolling the area and wondering why he can't have a chair to sit in. His feet are getting sore and he wants to rest. He's wandered a litte bit away from the others while he has been looking for the furniture.

Carefuly our friends enter Oddholme and are welcomed by Ayreon and Murdock. Distrusting even his own brother Vayine wants proof that these are not Horvis's minions in disguise...
After relating everything to Ayreon and Murdock of what happend in Rattledam and wwith Horvis the group finally has time to investigate the portal more closely. A odd bat - what else can you expect in a place called Oddholme - seems disturbing but even more disturbing is the fact that someone used the portal not long ago!! Footprints leave this place but there are others that only seem to enter this place...
But then Gry suddenly sees something Odd...

"I'd rather see if there is only one place or more than one place the portal goes."

Following along with Tishe, he responds, "You mean we might be able to use this thing to go wherever we want? Shady!" His features fall. "We don't want anybody showing up uninvited or unannounced though. That's the center thread. Either we use it or nobody does."
The cleric keeps poking about.

Gilan does not break his concentration when he is working on the deciphering of the runes. His knowledge of High Woldian should allow him to help out and he wants to be able to either seal it off when they wish or use it as they wish. He does not pay much attention to what is going on around him as he is too focused on the current task.
"If we can at least close it off so noone else can use it...it would help us out for sure." With a smile and a nod he goes back to his studies. "At least that way we can work on deciphering how to use it for our own needs...if possible." He does not bother to look around as he goes back to his current task.

Grymash is still looking for furniture, probably to break into kindling wood. Everyone except Olaf and Yanosh ignores the half-orcs exclamations. Together, the three peer into the darkness and shadows but cannot discern anything even though at least two of them have darkvision.
Tishe', Trellus and Gilan continue to study the device. Contrary to an initial conclusion, they suspect that it teleports one or more people to a single destination. Flea might be able to disable the device but the gnome would have to figure that out for herself. After the conclusion of this study, everyone concludes that a 'trigger', for want of a better term, could probably be devised by fashioning a token or other usable magical item marked with the High Woldian glyphs for the names of those hoping to be teleported, together with the symbols for the current astrological settings, would work. Of course, determining exactly what needs to be scribed may require use of divinatory magics.
When they relate this information, Vayine expresses the opinion that the Bloodpack should probably determine how to guard such a portal.

When Tishe' makes a comment about dissabling the device, Flea's ears perk up. "Doesn't look as promising as the Golden Door, " she admits, as she ambles over studying the glyphs and such around the portal. "No little Manfri handprints, or drawing, but magic, right?" she continues as she fumbles in her pouch for her tools.
Holding up her masterwork theif's tools, she continues, "you figure one of these might pass for what you want to get that thing activated, or...de-activated?" She raises an eyebrow, "should we try to shut it down?"

"I don't really want to go further than this until I get some rest, some food, and maybe a divination or two. So, if we stop here, Vayine has a good point: how do we guard the portal? If all of us are around and awake, we won't be able to do anything else, and I don't think anything less than all of us would be sufficient to guard the portal if Horvis the treadle comes back."
"Maybe it would be better to put an alarm so we know if it has been used instead of guarding the portal."

Spread out to lessen the damage from the things breath or what ever else it has this time."
Vayine holds the center, hoping to draw the most attention. Knowing full well that the thing will consider him very dangerious after the last battle.

Gilan slowly stands and then stretches as he listens to the other three talking. With a shrug he lessens the tension in his shoulders a little more. "I belive that we can come up with something that could watch over the portal for a while." There is a gleam in his eyes and he cannot help but chuckle as he talks. Oh he has something that would be rather suitable to stand guard over the portal...even while it slept. "We could well camp out in this room anyways and that would allow us all to be on guard." With a flick of his finger to rid his shoulder of a bit of dust he shrugs. "It would also allow us to come to the aid of others faster." He did not like the idea of leaving the back door unguarded and open...as they say.
Glancing to the others he watches as Flea moves forward to have a better look and maybe fiddle with the device. He stretches again, not really that worried though he should be...most likely. "I will make it a point to make spells available to me to help out in the morn." Bending over to touch his toes and help to continue the stretching of his muscles, that and he is feeling restless. "What is our next action." He might have heard some of the others by now if the sound carries or they are still in the same room.

Flea studies the portal mechanism after the others explaince how they think it functions. The gnome isn't able to figure out a way to keep the portal from operating. Tishe' and Gilan debate whether it would be better to guard the portal in case Horvis returns, or to place some form of magical alarm upon it. They don't come to any conclusion. Either way, however, they have learned enough that they could activate and probably trigger the portal to investigate what is on the other side.
Grymash, Olaf and Yanosh are standing about, with Olaf insisting that he heard footsteps coming from farther down the corridor. His impression is that someone was trying to walk away from them and the others back at the portal. The others, however, didn't hear a thing and aren't sure whether to believe them.

Vayine, meanwhile, has been staying close to the portal and has overheard the conversation between Grymash, Olaf and Yanosh. He's convinced that Horvis has returned and decided to try stealth rather than overwhelming force, for some reason. His shouts draw the attention of Gilan, Tishe', Trellus and even Flea.
The current question is whether to continue investigating the sounds and apparitions that Grymash saw, or to remain at the portal. And, if they investigate, does everyone go together. Right now, Olaf is certain that he heard the footsteps heading towards the main corridor. As everyone remembers, the corridors are 15 to 20 feet high and roughly 30 feet wide, poorly lit and generally provide lots of shadows for someone or something to hide. On the plus side, Murdock and Ayreon have done a pretty good job of removing most of the spider webbing that once cloaked the corridors of the grass dome.

Flea is worried that some folks seem kind of tired and worn out, and yet the rogue is worried that other folks seem to think the Horvis dude is out and about in Oddholme.
"I'll stay here an' stand guard for folks that need a rest," she volunteers, folding her arms across her chest. "If we stay in this chamber all together, even those that need to sleep of meditate, we can catch whatever might try to use the portal."
As an after thought, she adds, "we shouldn't split up into more'n two groups, if we do split up."

Gilan shakes his head as the others start to move and then snorts. "I will stay here...just in case it is a lure to get us away from the portal." There is a flash to his eyes and he closes them for a few seconds as his body begins to expand, changing shape once again. A thrill runs through him as he changes back into the shape of a rhemoraz...the feeling of power is palatable to him and he kind of likes it. Without moving too much he curls up near the portal and does not go any further than that.
They do not do well split up for sure, but this very well could be a trap in more than one sense of the word. He is sure that he can hold off most anything till the others arrive and he will be able to hear them if they call for his assistance.

Grymash leads the way, directed by Olaf's earlier words about footsteps and followed by Yanosh. The trio have now moved roughly 60 feet down the corridor from the portal, nearly to an intersection with another corridor.
Behind them, Vayine has caught the attention of the people studying the portal. Flea suggests staying put and that they shouldn't split up in the face of a possible opponent but everyone else seems to have a different idea. Trellus agrees and starts moving towards Grymash and the others. Tishe' takes a moment to cast a spell to summon some elementals. Gilan stays back near the portal but changes into the shape of a remorhaz.
The elementals are just moving down the corridor to intercept any flying creatures when a small, slight humanoid is caught in a fleeting beam from someone's light source. The humanoid is at the intersection, roughly 20 feet in front of Grymash. Clearly, it didn't expect to be revealed and stops moving.

Gilan yawns as he lays near the portal, though he is not tired. His eyes and ears scan the immediate area though he remains as still as possible. Breathing is easy and light as if asleep and inside he cannot help but smile about that.
For the briefest of minutes he allows his worry to come to the surface for his packmates. Letting that slip away, he knows that if they need him they will holler real loud.

The goblin freezes in place, listening to the various questions and demands that come from the Bloodpack. After Flea's identifying cry, almost everyone else demands that the creature stop moving and answer their questions. The only unusual thing is that Dacia seems unsettled or nervous.
The goblin is seemingly unfazed as it answers in accented Common with precise diction.
"So sorry! Certainly, I did not intend to disturb all of you. I leave you to your study ..."
With a smirk on its face, the goblin moves to leave and that is sufficient to trigger Grymash's charge.
COMBAT BEGINS
Grymash charges close, gripping the arm of the goblin before it can complete its movement. However, the goblin twists away from Grymash and moves away from Grymash toward the north side of the corridor. As it moves, the goblin draws its sword and dagger before it enters the deeper shadows along the side and disappears from sight.
However, there was enough time for everyone to get a fairly good look at the goblin. Enough for some to get a bad feeling ...
Knowledge Religion DC 15 - Highlight to display spoiler: {The goblin was moving too fast, too smoothly and had unnatural pallor. That's without mentioning the glimpse of elongated canines as it smirked at Grymash. It's a vampire.}
DM Comments - 1. Touch attack hits. 2. Grymash's Grapple modifier should be: +12 (9 BAB + 7 STR - 4 non-proficiency penalty), so the Grapple check should be only +14 vs. DC 16, so the Grapple attempt fails. Correct me if I'm wrong. 3. Creature performed Withdraw action, so no Attack of Opportunity. During movement, it drew weapons and then used skills.

Gilan is up and moving even before the first echo has time to die away, with the call of Trellus. His large bulk does not seem like it should be built to move so well...but it does. He slows ever so slightly as he comes upon the group though so they will not see a monster charging them down and get the wrong idea.
His eyes are already searching the area for signs of this trouble that has been hollered about. Though he does not just trust that part of his sense...but his hearing as well.

When Grymash hears Trellus yell out that it's a vampire, he attempts to flood the corridor, in front of him, with channeled positive energy. "Dead should stays dead!!"

Grymash knows his turning ability isnt anywhere near as powerful as Trellus', but he hopes it will at least help reveal where he is or make the lil bugger hiss.

Yanosh moves forward, drawing a weapon in order to attack the goblin. However, he cannot find it.
After recognizing the goblin for what it truly is, Trellus calls out a warning to his companions. The cleric then casts a protective spell before moving forward and casting another. Finally, he urges the shifter to come forward.
Tishe' casts See Invisibility. However, she does not see any invisible creatures within the area that she can see.
After hearing Trellus' call, Gilan moves his bulk forward as far as he can go. He is now mixed in with the others, ready to do battle with the vampire. DM Request - Can you put a stat block in your posts for the remorhaz, modified by Gilan's BAB, saves, etc.? It will save time for both you and I.
Vayine also casts See Invisibility, with the same results as Tishe'. There are no invisible creatures within the area that he can see.
Flea activates a magical item and begins blinking in and out of phase with the Wold. She draws her Holy weapon and steps 5 feet closer in the wake of Gilan.
Warned by Trellus' shout, Grymash tries to repel or destroy any undead within range. As far as he can tell, his turning attempt produces no effect.

Well, the turning attempt did have one effect. It marked Grymash as being a cleric.
The goblin vampire erupts from the shadows along the north wall, twisting and spinning as it moves towards Grymash. As the undead passes by the half-orc, the slender shortsword flicks out and stabs Grymash. The vampire continues to move, disappearing into the shadows along the south wall. Short sword -- hits AC 34, 24 total damage (piercing)

Having nothing revealed by his spell, the drow decides to trust his own eyes, their heat sensitive orbs just manage to reveal some details he missed before roll=24 +1 (bless bonus). his ears however are ringing with the shouts of his companions and reveal no new information to the warrior. Gilan allows his other visual senses to pick out the target as he does not need to bother with some things too much in this form. He could bull his way through but he will not do that as he does not want to hurt his friends. As most of the Bloodpack begin investigating the portal Gry, Olaf and Yanosh detect some noise... Then they can hear footsteps... Someone's in Oddholme and it ain't a member of the Bloodpack!!
Once everyone is aware signals the pack begins searching for this intruder. Moments later a little humanoid is found... A goblin... Oh no! It's a Vampire!!

Calling upon his drow heritage, Vayine summons some globes of light that surround the vampire to banish the shadows that it is hiding in. The drow fighter then moves towards the undead to stop beside Yanosh. DM Note -- After standard action to use Spell-Like ability, can make only single Move.
Grymash tries vainly to attack the vampire as it tumbled past but it was moving too quickly. Once the undead is revealed by the Dancing Lights, the half-orc steps closer and swings at it. His double axe just hits once, damaging the foul creature. DM Note -- No Attack of Opportunity was available. With the vampire revealed, I used the attack roll and made another, assuming that a full attack occurred.
Spying the vampire, Tishe' pulls out a wand and then casts a spell that summons gently glowing dust that settles over the form of the vampire. The theurge is able to place the spell so that no other member of the party is affected. It's too soon to tell if the undead is also blinded by the spell.
Flea creeps ahead, looking about for any other opponents.
Gilan waits behind his companions, ready to deal with any surprises that the vampire may have in store.
Olaf casts another protective spell.
Yanosh casts an offensive spell against the vampire, directing the Spiritual Weapon to strike. The weapon misses, though. Weapon attack = AC 10
Trellus waits.

Unable to easily hide and up against the wall, the vampire strikes at Grymash with its dagger. The blade just misses the half-orc. Dagger attack -- misses AC 23 (forgot to apply penalty from Prayer)
Then, scrambling and tumbling, the vampire moves past both Grymash and the air elemental without presenting an opportunity for either of them to attack. The vampire ends its movement in front of Vayine and Yanosh with only the dagger in hand, having sheathed its shortsword.
From the vampire's actions, it does not appear to be blinded. However, it is covered in glittery dust and clearly illuminated, so it hasn't bothered attempting to hide. Why should it, anyway, when the Bloodpack has barely managed to scratch it?

Thinking of what else hurts vampires, the mystic goes over the list; sunlight? not inside Oddholme. running water? definitely not. wooden stake? only grass around and...

Tishe' reaches into her Pants O' Plenty and brings out of one of the dimensional pockets her wooden secretary set. Weaving a spell, she shapes the wood from a wooden container to three sharpened wooden spikes! (cast Woodshape) The contents flutter to the floor, but the brown-eyed woman ignores the mess in her drive to assist her packmates.
"Who is strong enough to shove these through his heart?" Tishe' calls, and hands out Wooden Stakes to whoever wants one.

Seeing the toothy treadle now all aglow makes him a nice target for an angry half-orc barbarian cleric of Gargul. Charging at the goblin from behind, Grymash tries to remind the goblin about what it feels like to know pain. Well at least he tries. Grymash puts too much power in his swing and his blade goes a little wild.

Gilan stops his forward motion to figure out what should be his next move. In these tight quarters he knows that he cannot afford to be too aggressive or he might hurt someone. His large form is an obvious problem in this particular battle as the area is just not big enough for combative movement.
With a sigh his form starts to ripple again and soon in his place is a rather large lizard, that will most definitly be of more use here. The change is rapid and sudden though he does not even seem to notice as the change is so much a part of him that it has now become second nature.

She clicks the heels of her boots of speed and darts in to attack the vampire with her Holy Short Sword, hoping it's sting will distract the evil creature enough to allow the others to overpower it. [Hit AC=33; +2 for blinking, +1 hasted, +1 vs goblinoids, 36% miss chance-passed; Damage = 4 magic plus 2 holy]
The rogue then prepares to dodge the vampire should it focus it's attention on her. [Effective AC = 23; %50 miss chance]. Flea's eyes burn with fierce determination as she presses the attack in aid of her companions.

Trellus moves forward to get a bead on the dodging goblin, (move to AF,14) and slices a Searing LIght spell at the vampire. "Eat Domi's Light, you treadle!" The light strikes true into the undead that is susceptible to light, frying the vampire severely. ( 37 damage)

The spiritual weapon misses with its first swing but the second catches the vampire squarely. Yanosh then attempts to turn the undead, but his attempt was barely enough to turn the weakest skeleton. DM Note -- Yanosh's BAB is enough for the spiritual weapon to have two attacks on this and subsequent rounds.
Olaf closes with the vampire and misses with his sickle.
Tishe' suddenly realizes what might harm the vampire and converts an item into some usable weapons. If only someone would take the things from her ...
Grymash charges in to attack the vampire, swinging his doubleaxe with all his might. The effort is for naught, however.
Gilan shifts into the slightly smaller form of some kind of lizard. Now, possibly, he might be able to get by his companions.
Flea taps the heels of her boots and then dashes forward to attack the vampire. Her shortsword hits the thing to leave a weeping, puckered track from the holy energy that infuses the weapon.
Trellus snaps out of his funk and moves ahead to get a better line at the vampire. A beam of fiery light unerringly hits the thing, burning a very large hole in the centre of the undead's body.

Grymash had been the only opponent that has seriously injured the vampire, but now that insufferable cleric has burned a big hole in it. The vampire drops and tumbles between Olaf's legs in order to get close to Trellus. An open palm slaps the cleric and Trellus is both injured and drained of energy. Slam -- hits AC 29, 4 damage and 2 negative levels (see below). DC for the Fortitude save will be supplied later.

The spiritual weapon continues to swing on the creature as Yanosh wishes he had a steak. A big fat juicy steak would be delicious, but he subdues this thought, reaches behind him after dropping his axe, he takes a five foot step closer to his target and grabs an offered stake with which to impale the vampire. The attack misses however.
Spirital Weapon attacks AC: 26 doing 8 damage and AC 19 misses.
Yanosh misses with the stake.

Gilan goes right up the grass shaped pieces of the dome until he is overtop of the fighting and tries to figure out his next move. He really has no spells that would be of use and he doubts that he can get many of his spells past the defenses of the vampire. His eyes fall to the ground that the vampire is standing on and focuses his eyes to make sure that it is actual ground or at least stone. An idea is forming in his brain and a smile creeps over the face of the lizard.

Vayine to attack the vampire, going around one of his companions. His first swing just misses the undead thing. DM Note -- Vayine had to move more than 5 feet, so only one attack. I moved Vayine into a flanking position but it provided no benefit.
Trellus backs away from the vampire to create some space to cast a spell. The magic flows but does not affect the undead. DM Note -- Check the target for Command.
Tishe' moves forward, commanding one of the elementals to move out of her way. She holds out the stakes for anyone to take.
Olaf accepts the offer, dropping his sickle then stepping ahead to grab one of the stakes. He cannot hit the vampire with it, though.
Yanosh takes another stake before stepping forward to attack the vampire. Again, the attack misses.
Having had enough of being subtle, Grymash moves to attack the vampire and delivers a mighty blow. The blow deals a mighty wound to the vampire.
The big lizard that is Gilan climbs up and over his companions. The shifter is studying the floor and sees that it is dressed stone like the area around the portal.

The vampire strikes at Grymash, hitting the half-orc with the dagger. The wound seems barely a pinprick until the dagger is ripped from Grymash's side, weakening the half-orc as a strong flow of blood pours out. Not really liking his options but having no others open to him, his head bobs and a slight hissing noise issues from the lizards mouth. His eyes do not bother to move from the vampire goblin, but he does not bother to look at more than the things chest...or lower.
He has little hope that the spell will work but he must at least give it a try and should it work...it will save the group much trouble. The last is a flick of his tongue as if casting the spell down at his foe.

Olaf tumbles around the vampire into a flanking position, ready to plunge a stake into the creature if someone else should nearly destroy it.
From his perch on the ceiling, Gilan concentrates and casts a spell on the vampire. Nothing happens to vampire.
Tishe' has a sudden insight, so the theurge turns and seals the entrance to the chamber containing the portal.
Trellus blasts the vampire with another Searing Light spell. The fiery beam of light strikes the vampire squarely, completely burning through the undead body. The vampire instantly turns to dust in front of the Bloodpack, the dust falling to the floor where it swirls and begins flowing towards the icy wall created by Tishe'.
Grymash and Flea don't have a chance to attack. Everyone can follow the swirling mass of dust and vapour as it creeps along the floor to the ice wall. Once there, the dust and vapour flows across the surface of the wall as if it were searching for an opening into the portal room.

The lizard drops from the ceiling, changing shape as he does and comes to a nice landing. He is now kneeling, feet and one hand touching the floor of the tunnel. He is holding a potion bottle in his free hand and his eyes are flashing, his own slightly pointed teeth showing...though you know him to not be a vampire. In fact you can see the canines occupy both the top and the bottom...more like the wolf that he once traveled with.

The cloud of vapour and dust slowly moves over the surface of the ice wall, searching for any opening to the room beyond. When Yanosh casts his spell, it simply illuminates the area to clearly show the sifting movements of the vapour and dust.
When the Bloodpack try to capture the vapour, they find that it cannot be contained. After several minutes of effort, the ice wall melts as the spell ends. Once the ice is not blocking the vapour, it flows towards the portal. The vapour keeps close to the floor and the Bloodpack is easily able to keep pace. The vapour reaches the High Woldian runes around the perimeter of the portal and begins to circle the portal.

Running back to her dropped parchments, pens, and inkwells, Tishe' gathers them up into her Pockets o Plenty. "Of course keep the stake, sweetie", the brown-eyed woman tells Vayine. "I'm sure as soon as we go through the portal, there will be more need of it."
Coming back, Tishe' will carefully copy down the runes and the order for and label it: "Destination #1".

Gilan slips the bottle back into the pack and stands slowly to follow the mist. His eyes watch with some minor interest as the glyphs are lit and he shakes his head. "What if this portal has been used by more than just Horvis...what if there are others who have used it in the past." He does not want to say powerful and older others as this vampire might have a master...that would make him more powerful.
He shakes himself and paces a little, much like a caged animal. He does not know how soon the others are planning to go through this portal, but he is hoping for later. Glancing to both Gry and Vayine he smiles as he pulls the pack off his back, digging through it even before it is fully on the ground. Soon he pulls out four bottles clutched between his fingers. "This could be useful if we face more than vampires." Each bottle contains what appears to be a silvery liquid, most likely enough to coat a single weapon for a short while.
Glancing to Trell he shakes his head. "I would be in favor of sleeping and reorganizing my spells for the coming battle...very little I have is useful against undead." Shaking his head he doubts that anything he still has access to would be of use. "With my new limits...I maybe hard pressed to find something that useful."

Wait. we have no Idea whats on the other side of this portal. we should check on Oddholme. On the others, make sure the Vampire hasn't infected them as well. We should take a few moments to make sure that our new home is defendable, otherwise we risk the same thing that just happened here. we go, chase the vampire to the depths of the hells or where ever it is heading, we win...enter Oddholme just to find it over run, and have to fight and clear it out just to rest again. not to mention what would happen to Our mates, if they are left with our assistance, or at least strenghtend defenses. I think we should bless the main areas, and get a good feel of Oddholme and see how we can fix it up for defense then head in to the portal. we have the location marked now.
Vayine makes his peace then prays to Gargul that the others will hear the wisdom of his words.
Making note of the runes chosen by the 'vampour' Flea tries to decipher their meaning. If she is able to figure out what the runes indicate, she will inform the party.
Not at all happy that the goblin vampire cum smoke or mist is going to escape, the gnome fans at it with her holy short sword in in effort to cause it to move away from the portal.

Grymash in his rage only pauses a small moment to process what he sees. However, not really caring to consider what is happening, or like he is even able to, he rushes to the control panel and attempts to crush the wisp of dust into... uhh dust!? His axe not suited well for crushing, Grymash employs his fist. Not caring which buttons or runes that may get pounded underneath his mighty hands.

The Bloodpack make various attempts to capture or damage the vapour remnants of the vampire. All fail to achieve anything, though. As Tishe' and the others study the movement of dust and vapour, they detect that it spends more time near certain glyphs and theorize that these might be the settings to return the vampire to where it came from.
After several circuits of the portal, the dust and vapour collect near the centre of the portal and form into the shape of the vampire. Over time, the form gradually solidifies, becoming like a statue of the vampire sleeping upon the floor. Finally, after nearly two hours, the form is nearly complete.
A crash suddenly sounds through the portal chamber!
Looking quickly, two weapons and a coat of mail are laying upon the floor where the vampire once lay. The vampire's form is sifting down to form an inert layer of dust upon the floor. Looking more closely, the weapons are the short sword and dagger wielded by the vampire, while the mail must have been under clothing or otherwise hidden.
Now the Bloodpack is faced with two choices: immediately attempt to use the portal to learn where the vampire may have come from; or, rest and recuperate overnight? If they immediately explore, they would be weakened and Trellus is still suffering from the effects of the vampire's attack. On the other hand, waiting may allow someone, or something, from the other side of the portal to come through. The heroes need to consider their options and decide how to proceed.
Of course, there is the present distraction of the gear left by the vampire. Identifying those items and other preparations may take some time.

Trellus rubs his short blonde hair and squeezes his eyes momentarily shut while trying to will the headache away from his brain. "Light", he mutters, and then looks around. "OK, dudes, we're going to wait and get geared up to try this portal tomorrow."
"Any spells or non-magical traps to stick in this chamber to give warning or delay anything coming through the portal would be useful for a good night's sleep. And Vayine, you have a point", the cleric of Domi continues, "that we need to make sure no one else was hurt by the vampire."
"We're gonna have to be careful dudes. That vampire may have been the scout for Horvis."
"Let's collect the equipment and get ready for tomorrow."
Wearily, Trellus moves off to the sleeping areas, thinking about tomorrow and how to prepare the best spells. He also thinks about the cursed touch of the vampire and how to overcome the soul-sucking effect on him.

He digs through his haversack, pulling out some thread and rope, then starts setting up a rudimentary deadfall trap, with both tanglefoot bags set to drop if anything appears in a small web of rope he prepares in the middle. Vayinen begins seraching for signs of where Murdock and Aeryon went to, in order to collect more information on the vampire, and to hopefully tell if they have been effected.

Gilan shakes himself as he slowly stands back up, putting the four bottles back into his pack. Glancing to the Flea he cocks his head to the side with a smile. "I do believe that Flea's weapon was the most useful in that battle." He arches one eyebrow in an indication that she might give her little secret...if she felt like it. He himself is wondering and it might be more than useful he figures if they can get that same effect...even if through another source.
He absently stretches and you can hear a series of slightly loud cracks and pops as he does...though he makes no show of noticing himself. "Maybe we should stay closer to the portal for sleep." He does not really care if they do as he is not sure if they can handle much more than they already have. It is just an option.

Flea volunteers to help Olaf create his trap, (Untrained Craft-Aid Another=8), but the gnome doesn't sufficiently understand the workings of the trap to be of any rea assistance.
"I can stay an' guard the room," she volunteers, feeling a bit useless after her futile attempt.
Flea will take up a position at the door exiting the room containing the portal.

The Bloodpack discuss how to guard or protect the portal area, either with spells, traps or sentries keeping watch. At the same time, some wonder if Murdock and Ayreon have been turned or suborned by the vampire. Tishe's stays with Olaf and Flea as the pair of rogues attempt to create some traps to either delay any intruders or warn the Bloodpack. The theurge might also add some webbing to the trap that Olaf has created. Gilan and Yanosh also stick around, waiting until the portal is protected. Everyone leaves the vampire's arms and armor where it fell.
After discussing options, Trellus moves off with Vayine towards where Murdock and Ayreon have established their quarters. When they arrive, Ayreon and Murdock are just arriving, too, carrying sacks of food and water that have (presumably) been foraged outside the dome.
"What happened?, asks Murdock. Ayreon drops his burden and moves towards Trellus and Vayine.

Inside the Dwarf Cleric is worried at the appearance of the undead. There is more going on around here then it looks, or was the vampire an accident like him and Olaf are. Silently he sets outside the door and watches.

Tishe' assists with the traps (untrained assist= +2 to Olaf skill) and once Olaf and Flea are satisfied, she conjures an Unseen Servant to bring the vampire's armor and weapons back to the living area. Then, an Extended Web covers the entrance with the stickly strands for 2 hours.
Coming back to the living areas, Tishe' is quiet, listening intently to what has been going on in Oddholme and Rattledam as both groups talk about recent events. Carding some plant-wool to make thread (Weaving:18), her hands are busy, but Tishe's brown eyes keep watch. (Spot:25)

Vayine reaches out his hand holding the holy symbol of Gargul out to Murdock for identification. While at the same time Activating his Dragon Tear to alert Trellus.
"This is the only way I should know if they are infected. In my estimation Murdock posses the biggest threat with his magic. If you can, detect on him first in case he is able to resist the holy symbol." (This is through the message power of the tear to Trellus)

Gilan stretches and then moves towards the door area that is now roped off with webs. As he turns to regard Flea and Yanosh he smiles. "You don't mind if I stand a watch as well I hope." When the hour starts to get late enough he stretches and then shakes as his form ripples, changing for what he hopes is the last time for today.
Soon there is the huge remorahz that curls up on the floor near the exit and entrance to the room. He has squeezed his huge body so that you would need to go overtop of him to get through the doorway. It appears that he has started to spending a little more time in the guise of animals than normal. His eyes watch and ears listen as he lays there, not sleeping...at least not yet.

Trellus' Dragon Tear hasn't worked in years, and so the cleric doesn't hear a thing Vayine says. But, he has the same reservations as the drow.
"Hold on a sec, dudes," he tells Murdock and Ayreon. "I gotta heal myself first."
Trellus casts a healing spell - with a slightly larger area of effect than he let on....
[Spontaneously cast Mass Cure Light Wounds over Spell Resistance. Trellus, Vayine, Murdock, and Ayreon affected - hopefully healing each for 15 hp. If undead, take 15hp damage. Will save DC21 to halve]

Hunkering down for the a long guard shift, Flea sits with her legs outstretched, her upper body resting comfortably against a coil of the remorahz . "Ya' don't mind, do ya' Gilan?" she asks.
Calling to the dwarf she says, " Why don't'cher bring over that there short sword, dagger, an' mail shirt, Yanosh? Be careful," she admonishes, "in case its cursed or something."
The rogue will poke at the items with her own short sword, and have a look to figure out if there is anything special about them.

Yanosh squats down in the portal room with Flea and both prepare to watch the portal for any sign of people (or things) arriving inside the dome. Tishe' helped Olaf with setting the traps before retrieving the arms and armor left by the vampire. For some reason, no one wants to touch the equipment. Gilan shifts form again and blocks the entrance to the portal room.
With nothing else to do while they wait, Flea pokes the vampire's gear with her sword. Nothing untoward happens when she does. When she casts a Detect Magic spell, Flea concentrates on the equipment. The equipment is all masterwork and, of course, magical.
In the living quarters, Vayine and Trellus calmly test the reaction of Murdock and Ayreon to divien magic. Fortunately, neither are repulsed by a holy item or curing magic. Of course, Murdock immediately responds.
"We're fine, fine of course. There's no reason to heal us. Or, maybe there is? What did you fight? You haven't said anything about that - did it come through the portal like this Horvis you mentioned when you first arrived?"

Olaf doesn't like the look of the vampire's gear, and mostly stays away. Satisfied that the warning system will work, if it can, he prepares to rest and get ready for the party's travel the next day. He spends the early evening time in a bit of a funk, meditating on the purpose of the portal---why should it be here? Why is Horvis so interested in it? No answers come to mind, for now.

Trellus raises up his hands placatingly. "Sorry," he apologizes to Murdock. "We had to be sure you were you. We tracked down a goblin vampire a few minutes back. He turned into a gas cloud and then escaped back through the portal. Me an' Vayine didn't know if maybe he got you dudes first and, well, you know..." the blond man makes a sucking sound, and then gives the drow a wink.
"Glad to find out he didn't."
The cleric considers a bit before continuing - "Which is the good news. The bad news is vampires gotta get home when they get ripped like that. And so that dude's home is very close to the portal. Not to mention he seemed to get in here no problem."
The blond man turns to Murdock. "We're going after it tomorrow," he says. "You might want to see if you can throw some guard type spells on that room in the morning. I'll put a glyph on it anyway, maybe that'll help. C'mon"
He waves them to accompany him back to the Portal room to join up with the others.

At the portal, Tishe' uses her wand to Identify the three pieces of equipment claimed from the vampire. The others guarding the portal settle in for a boring night of guard duty.
Over at the portion of the dome converted for living accomodations, Trellus and Vayine are explaining the reasons for their suspicion to Murdock and Ayreon. Both nod in agreement, knowing full well how a vampire might subtly control those of weak mind. Murdock agrees with the concept of placing protective wards on the portal chamber to keep unwanted guests from the dome. The mage does have one welcome insight, "Hmm ... from the sounds of it, the vampire couldn't operate the portal while it was gaseous. That might give us more of a chance, mightn't it?"
While they speak with one another, Ayreon pick up a strange folding contraption from one of the living quarters.
"Before you got here, I forgot to mention that a magical flying courier brought some things by. Purchases from the Catacombs, I think it was. This had a tag on it for Grymash, but it's gotten lost somewhere."
Ayreon carries the contraption back to the portal chamber with the others. Once there, the drow takes the contraption over to Grymash and gives it a shake. After some awkward motions, the contraption is revealed to be some sort of folding, reclining chair.

Gilan lets out a yawn as he lets Flea settle against his new bulk. As the others approach he turns his head to look at them and then shifts ever so slightly to allow them to pass. He is so careful about the movement that it should not bother Flea much.
His eyes continue to watch the area and he does not bother to lower his guard. With another yawn he settles in to wait this all out, knowing that he can maintain the form he is in for a good ten hours. That will be more than enough to get him into the next morning and beyond if he wished it...but he would need to go through his morning prayers for spells. Could he do that in this form if he wanted?
Shifting slightly he listens to the others as they go about their own business and talk things over. He is warm and relatively safe so he is not bothered too much...for now.

Olaf looks at the small sword with new respect after its nature is revealed. "Hm. I can see why a nasty undead like that would like somethin' like this." Laughing softly, he continues, "I'm thinkin' I could even use it, were it a might bit larger. Something like that could come in handy one of these days. Maybe it'd be better for Flea---better size, 'n all. Same goes for the armor. Guess we'll settle it after Flea finishes nappin'."
He then settles in for the night, hoping for a dreamless night in this dark place, wondering if he'll ever see the Vein again.

Yanosh also waves the offered Items. He has taken too much already from the group that he has contributed so little to.
Settling in he looks over at Flea. "You take them Flea! Or sell them. I can not use them."
Yanosh opens a sack next to him and starts going through it. Taking inventory he pulls out a hand crossbow and a bone tied to the middle of a leather string. Pulling up his right sleave he looks at the new Tattoo there. If any look they see two tattoos there both of which are for healing. The leather string he ties around his neck and tucks the bone inside his armor plate. the crossbow he picks up and studies it closely. "This one will take some time," he mutters softly. Digging in his backpack Yanosh pulls out a work kit and lays strips of leather on the floor. Quietly he uses his knife to cut and trim the peices. Leather string is threaded through holes. Measurements taken and retaken. Frustration shows on his face as he fasions a crude holder for the crossbow. "I know how to do this. Or at least I used to," he grumbles.

The Bloodpack settle in for the night, watching and guarding the portal. Fortunately, or not, nothing disturbs their rest. Once morning arrives, the Bloodpack complete their morning prayers and whatever other preparations they must make.
The fate of the three items from the vampire is still to be decided. Of course, there's also the plan for the day.
