The Vulfgard Wharf[DM SteveK] Monday August 11th, 2008 11:10:30 AM
The Dragon's Teeth Mountains loom ever closer.! The end of the journey is close, and the GrassSwift slows, nosing among the hills that are covered by shorter Sargrass. The effect is if the ship were on a stormy sea, going up, up, up, and then down down down. This lasts no more than an hour, for the mountains are very close, and at last the GrassSwift ties up onto a wooden dock that juts back into solid rock. "Welcome my lords and ladies, to Vulfgard!" announces Captain Ganness.
On the wharf are a dozen well-armed dwarves. Spot Check DC 15 (Durgan and Kazak get +4 to check) Highlight to display spoiler: { can see the cliff is cunningly delved into a citadel that guards the wharf. There are shadows in hidden windows that hint of more watchers and weapons than the dozen on the dock.}
Captain Ganness vaults the GrassSwift gunnwales and strides up to speak to the first mailed dwarf. Flashing a stone on a leather thong to the dwarf, Ganness nods as if in response to instructions and then goes to a side crevasse and is lost from view.
The Sailors are making no gestures to get off or unload anything. "We Sailors wait until the Captain comes back with more instructions", is the answer when asked, "I suppose you passengers are on your own now."
Durgan - Sub Al d20+12=20 ; Monday August 11th, 2008 12:30:56 PM
Durgan stands tall on the deck with his thumbs hooked into his belt. He raises a hand, and a finger paints an arc across the face of the cliff. (Spot 20)
"Kazak, the stonework," he says, voice filled with pride.
"Defenses built right into the living rock," he says for the benefit of the others.
Peerimus and Yorrick - Sub Al d20+7=8 ; Monday August 11th, 2008 3:39:12 PM
Peerimus stands to the back of the pack of sailors and his own companions. The druid's eyes run over the dwarves gathered upon the dock, and he tries to gauge their mood. Not today. The flurry of activity and the new dwarven faces conspire to leave the scene an unreadable mask. (Sense Motive 8)
Yorrick, as though of the same mind, lifts his big black nose high into the air, snuffing the scents from the dark, cool, and alluring caves.
Firn'gaer d20+6=20 ; Monday August 11th, 2008 5:54:37 PM
Firn'gaer eyes the slight movement and an occasional glint from the shadows. He notes that there are more dwarves out of sight. "I don't know the customs of the dwarves in this region. How do we disembark without causing a hostile response?" He ponders. "What of the item given to us by the dwarven wizard?"
Kazak d20+7=20 ; Monday August 11th, 2008 11:16:19 PM
Kazak eyes the stonewalls (d20+7=20 spot check) " aye brother ..... be good to get solid stone beneath our feets again " as he smiles
"Ah ...Peerimus i think we wait till da Captain comes back then i think we can head out ......just to wait and see if he has any advice for us ..... like where to go first " grins the dwarven warrior
gathering his gear ..... the dwarf ready's himself for when they leave the Grass Sswift ..... looking relaxed as he goes about his routine
Savin Monday August 11th, 2008 11:36:24 PM
Savin heads below deck and collects his gear and readies to disembark. He notices the reception at the dock and frowns but holds his place not wanting to cause any trouble. He wanders over to Peerimus and says, "Did you ever notice as we get more powerful, we seem to have to be more circumspect? What every happened to the good ole days of jumping in feet first and kicking butt?"

The Vulfgard Wharf[DM SteveK] d20+5=18 ; Tuesday August 12th, 2008 7:47:30 AM
The Sailors aboard the GrassSwift seem unconcerned about Captain Ganness taking his time, but some are becoming nervous about Ganness not being with them while the CoC, a Panther, and a Bear are on deck. They begin to talk, wondering when thier passengers will go about thier business.
The closest dwarf overhears, and moves towards the boat. The other 11 guards seem to become instantly more alert.
The approaching dwarf calls out. "D' ye have living cargo aboard, d' ye? Ye better come an doon fer us ter see yer bona fides, or ye can jus' sail back ter da Plains now."
The dwarf waits.
Peerimus and Yorrick - Sub Al Tuesday August 12th, 2008 10:55:30 AM
The druid leans his head toward the monk and whispers from the corner of his mouth. "With great power comes great responsibility," he says.
But he turns to the elder of the two dwarven brothers.
"Durgan." The implications behind the words <i>'living cargo'</i> go ignored. "It might be a good idea to announce ourselves and ask if we can come ashore."
Durgan - Sub Al Tuesday August 12th, 2008 11:03:53 AM
Durgan nods and coughs into his fist before stepping up to address those on the dock.
"We be the Children of Chaos, I Durgan Stonewall and this me brother Kazak, dwarves as stout of stone as ye. We've come from Hook City ta speak with Kazan Copperlord, Lord of Vulfgard, on a subject of great importance."
"Do we have leave to come ashore and enter Vulfgard?"
Jurgen Tuesday August 12th, 2008 2:16:18 PM
Jurgen glances towards the sailors, trying to understand their discomfort. Afterall, the Children had just a few days ago prevented them from being eaten. Regardless, he joins the rest of the Children and stands behind them, ready to leave the boat.
DM SteveK: nothing special, they just see a difference between the animals lounging about deck or battling leviathans on the 'Grass while thier Captain (who has been in control of every situation for years) is on deck: and the animals up and active while thier fearless Captain isn't there... :-)
Kazak Tuesday August 12th, 2008 5:05:17 PM
"Aye ... dats us " growls Kazak as he steps next to his brother " and we come wit some good friends " as his arm sweeps toward his fellow Children of Chaos

Savin Tuesday August 12th, 2008 10:14:09 PM
Savin comes down the gangplank and with the medallion the dwarven wizard gave them as identification as dwarf friends. He thinks back to the elves giving them medallions when they were elf friends. "My name is Savin and I come in peace."
The Vulfgard Wharf[DM SteveK] d20+10=19 ; Wednesday August 13th, 2008 8:25:51 AM
The dwarf bows correctly to Durgan and Kazak and pretty much ignores the others coming off the ship until Savin brings the curious stone (ooc: not a medallion) provided by the dwarf wizard. His eyes widen and then narrow, and the dwarf approaches looking intently at the stone (Stonework: 19). When his inspection is complete, he backs off a step and looks at the group with new respect in his eyes.
"To see the Lord of Vulfgard involves more than jumping off a boat, even with a pass stone. However, I may be able to see to your request and maintain protocol at the same time." He turns to Durgan and Kazak. "If you would bring your retainers and all goods with you, I will have you escorted to the Guard Captain in the Watch Tower. It's a bit of a walk, but you may find it worth it, for not only is the Captain responsible for who is allowed in our Halls, but he is named Hannan Copperlord, the only surviving son of Lord Vulfgard."
Durgan - Sub Al d20-1=19 ; d20+2=17 ; Wednesday August 13th, 2008 9:31:19 AM
OoC: Well, respectable CHA and WIS rolls. Durgan manages to keep his temper. And, on top of that, coughs up a fairly civil reply as well.
Before another move can be made, Durgan raises thick meaty hands into the air.
"To all the dwarves of Vulfgard," he calls up into the high stone cliffs and the hidden watching eyes, "I'll be making this clear before we set a foot inside your city."
"These here with us are our friends. Not retainers or followers or any such kind. They've proven themselves heroes, worthy of the respect of any dwarf. And I won't be having them denied the common courtesy of the halls."
He holds the moment, arms still raised toward the cliffs. Then he turns to the dwarf on the dock.
"Thank ye. We'll see yer Captain Hannan Copperlord. Just point us the way."
Durgan's eyes catch the cowed look of the elven ranger.
"Trace, why don't ye walk with us? Ye've as much right to the halls as any."
Kazak Wednesday August 13th, 2008 6:09:47 PM
"Aye brother ... i'm in agreement wit ya " as he slaps Drgan on his shoulder
Kazak steps off the Grass Swift and onto the dock and awaits his cohorts
Once headed towards the watch tower to visit the Captain of the guard " heh retainers and servants .... hehe .... and yous thought us dwarves didn't have no sense of humor " chuckles Kazak to the group
Jurgen Wednesday August 13th, 2008 6:40:05 PM
Hearing Durgan's defense of the Children (and, most precisely, Trace), Jurgen tries not to grimace. While they were certainly going to make their presence known with an elf along for the ride, the paladin figured they'd try not to step on too many toes. After ten seconds in Vulfgard, that plan had been shot down rather quickly. Maybe they wouldn't need much of a plan to go after Copperlord... They could just fight every dwarf that stood between him and the Children. Jurgen smiles, wishing he could mention the plan to Peerimus, just for the look on the druid's face.
Instead, he walks with the group and attempts to look just as confident as Durgan and Kazak. For the duration of their walk, Jurgen stands close to Trace and is prepared to Interpose himself between any attack and the elf.
Savin Wednesday August 13th, 2008 10:10:17 PM
Savin also nods at Durgan's words, holds out his hand to get the stone back and smiles at the dwarven guard and says, "I almost got eaten by a giant squid that tried to eat our ship to earn that honor. Bigger than a dragon. Meaner than a starved troll surrounded by a wall of fire. More ornery than a dwarven warrior who has had his beard cut off while sleeping."
Savin plucks his hand into his haversack and pulls out a piece of smoked meat. "Wanna try a piece of it? Taste like chicken. Not often you can say you eat something that can swallow an elephant whole in one swallow."

"Hannan would be an excellent place to begin." Peerimus says quietly to those just about him. While his first option was not to parade Trace through, since the meeting with Rorek, he had no intention of hiding him. Plans change, the river alters course and new paths are made. Rorek did all this for the druid and downstream now laid Hannan. With a nod and nearly impercievable grunt in octaves not designed for the noble races to hear or make, Yorrick shakes his head and moves beside Peerimus's right hand.
"A Gelendan." Peerimus adds to the end of Savin's statement. Though he thought of the statement as boastful and it did not sit right with. He did, however, know that such words had thier uses. The story now out the dwarves they would past would likely inquire to the crew and thus it would become hard fact and not empty bragging. That would inturn race before them and set the field upon which they would speak with Hannan, Captian of Turok Nor. And that would be a good thing.

The Vulfgard Wharf[DM SteveK] Thursday August 14th, 2008 8:17:35 AM
A swift silence decends on the wharf after Durgan makes his announcement. The dwarfs tighten thier hands on thier weapons. The crew on the ship stand gawking. The cliffs echo the pronouncement over and over again, without answer from the hiddden watchers in the stone.
And then Savin speaks of the fight almost good-naturedly, smilingly asking for the stone and why it is precious to the group. The talking dwarf blinks and the moment passes. The stone is returned, and while there is a little grumbling in the ranks of the dwarves, no one says (or does) anything overtly hostile. Looks like they are taking thier cues from thier leader. Sense Motive DC 16 Highlight to display spoiler: { The dwarf leader is a mixture of emotions, but most curiosity about the group. }
"Right. Companions, champions for law and goodness all, and smashed a big honking boggle out on the plains." He grunts but there is a bit of a smile around his bearded face. "At least you know what to be afraid of! If you don't mind, though, I'm going to let Captain Hannan make the decision whether you are who you say you are or not, and whether you get to come in Vulfgard." He eyes narrow and nose pinches at the sight of Trace, but he seems to be as good as his word and leads the Children of Chaos towards the cliffside.
...............................
The heroes are led through a cunningly made door that resembles precicely the side of the cliff and into the guarding tower of Vulfgard's Wharf. The cooridor is wide and tall enough for two waggons side-by-side as the coolness of the rock is welcoming after the heat of the Sargrass Plains. The cooridors and hallways definitely show signs of being defensive; portculli, murder holes, deep pits spanned by temporary bridges, etc. Durgan and Kazak can easily determine they are moving deeper into the mountains. Everyone can tell when they are moving up along broad stairs.
It takes nearly a half hour of walking in the dimly lit halls to come to a stout wooden door, carved in a blocky style and depicting a heavily armored dwarf in front of a mountain holding off a demonic-looking wolf. Two dwarven guards flank the door, but do not move as the dwarf opens the door and walks through, motioning the Children to come along.
......................
The door leads to an office of stout woods, polished stone, and dark leathers. There are two other doors leading from the office that look like interior doors of a house. An empty armor stand is in one corner, and another stands beside it bedecked with a very heavy, baroque full plate mail set. Your dwarf guide sets his helm on top of the empty armor stand and moves to a sidebar pouring a stien of something dark and earthy. Putting seven stiens and two large bowls on the sideboard, he looks up to catch your eyes. "Ale, wine, or water? I'll pour."
Durgan - Sub Al Thursday August 14th, 2008 9:57:31 AM
"I'll take an ale," Durgan replies without missing a beat. "And I take it that yer Captain Hannan Copperlord." He knocks back the ale, leaving foam in his beard, and ends with a satisfied belch.
"I could nae help but notice the defenses on the way in. Tis the source of such that brings us here."
Savin Thursday August 14th, 2008 7:37:22 PM
Savin also points to the ale and says, Dwarven brewers are Wold reknown for their brewing skills. I would be foolish to not take this chance to partake in some of your good dwarven ale. Thank you.

Peerimus pays little attention to the dwarves about him. Or rather does not pick up on anything from the dwarves about them. peerimus walks quietly admring the dwarven work on the stone. While not his forte he can appreciate how close they are naturally with the stone in which they make thier home.
Arriving at their destination, or at least where they will wait for a time, the druid answers, "An ale and a bowl of water for Yorrick and Shadow", a gesture towards the pair of animals. Peerimus moves to remove his leather dragon helm and locates a place to put it and leans his satff against the wall nearby.
Kazak Thursday August 14th, 2008 11:05:28 PM

Jurgen Friday August 15th, 2008 7:17:40 AM
While in Vulgrad, Jurgen does his best to stay out of everyone's way. He does take note of the extreme readiness in the community and hopes that the Children won't have to take up their swords. In this place, such an act would probably bring the full might of an army down on them.
"Wine, please." Jurgen nods his head to the dwarf and takes his seat. Vulfgard may not have been his forte, nor did he know enough about the dwarven people to really be much help in the coming discussions. But he knew how to enjoy a good glass of wine. And that was enough for now.
The Vulfgard Wharf[DM SteveK] d20+10=27 ; Friday August 15th, 2008 1:32:41 PM
The dwarf smiles but only pours two bowls of water, a stien of a pale, semi-sweet wine, and six stiens of earthy robust ale, then hands them out, seemingly not concerned about being alone in the midst of the group, Shadow, or Yorrick.
"I am glad you are as quick on your mental feet as I hoped", he begins. "I am indeed Hannan Copperlord, son of Kazan, son of Braggi Wolfsbane, Captain of Vulfgard, and hier to Vulfgard. As Captain, I am in charge of our outer defenses so I keep aware of what is beyond the borders of Turak Nor. As heir, I am required to know our people's history so I have read stories of teams of adventurers always seeming to show up in times of crisis. Both aspects of my status put me in a position to know more (and therefore be more tolerant) of people and events that are outside our Halls."
Hannan continues to move about the outer office while talking, waving permission to sit but still moving while talking. "I tell you this for several reasons. One, so that you know I believe your credentials of Rozak's talisman. Two, so you know I know of the Children of Chaos as well as old stories of the Golden Dragons and Storm Dragons who have both visited Turak Nor in the past. Three, so you know that the tolerance you may find in me will not match most of our peoples to include", and he gives another wry smile, "my father, Lord Vulfgard."
Hannan finally plants his feet in the center of the room with arms akimbo, and looks at the collective group in his office. "So what brings a rather formidable group of adventurers that are empowered by the Crones of the Downs all the way to Vulfgard?"
Sense Motive: 27 Highlight to display spoiler: { Hannan is good at keeping secrets, but minor clues show that he is almost certain he already knows why the CoC has come and is forcing the group to come out and say it. He also seems worried about the intolerance of his fellow dwarves added to the powerful and sensitive group that serious violence could occur.}
Durgan - Sub Al d20+12=30 ; Friday August 15th, 2008 3:32:26 PM
"Captain Copperlord," with a thick calloused finger, Durgan wipes a bit of foam from his lip, "I'll tell ye, that the reasons that bring us here are delicate. Too much so for a warrior like me ta be presenting and yammering about."
"But, I'll ease yer mind on one count. I'd take harm upon myself before I'd let any ill come to yer people. Ye can take my word for that." (Sense Motive 30.)
"We've been gone for a long time, me and Kazak. And coming back ... ta see all this ... well there's no words ta speak of it. As pig headed as they all might be, they're my people too, ya know."
A light flush of pink colors Durgan's cheeks, his stammer fades away, he turns to stare into the middle-distance, and he grows more quiet.

(ooc sense motvie roll 11)
Savin listens to the dwarves of the group dodge the question almost thinking that Durgan was going to head things in the right direction. He sighs when he falls short. He stands up and approaches the dwarven Captain and says, "Sir my name is Savin. I have been a member of the Children of Chaos for a very long time. Our history is long and only one of our current members has been around longer than I have. Long ago we found out that we are tools for the Fates. Why we were chosen, we don't know. But we do know that our spirits seem to be reborn in times of need when Chaos is to strong. It is our duty to battle it and scatter it to more acceptable levels. We recently accomplished this and I thought our purpose was done. I was wrong. It seems that the Fates aren't done with us yet.
We think an old enemy of the Children has arisen here and is stirring up trouble. This enemy is an agent of Chaos and helping stir the pot of this Elvish/Dwarvish conflict that is starting to brew. Can you tell me why you are in conflict? I have asked others and no one can. We think this agent of Chaos is influencing things. We are here to stop it....or do you prefer war with the elves?"
Perimus and Yorrick d20+7=14 ; Monday August 18th, 2008 9:51:17 AM
Peerimus nods a quick thanks on for the ale and sets the bowl down for Yorrick. To the point, as expected of a good dwarf Peerimus tilts his head slightly as he listens to Durgan and Kazak and hoists up a glass at teh toast offered. Savin sums up things well though with a little more bluntness than Perimus would have liked, but Hannan Copperlord hopefully sees it for the straight conversation that it is. Warrior to warrior. Given that, Peerimus keeps quiet and turns to look to Hannan, eyebrows raiseing slightly with a cocking head in anticipation of the dwarven Captains relpy.
Firn'gaer Monday August 18th, 2008 1:03:50 PM
Firn'gaer quietly listens to the conversation. He accepts the dwarven hospitality, but does keep an eye on the room for trouble. Though he doesn't expect any, the reaction they receive from the dwarven wizards with regards to the stone sword means that potential confrontations could occur because of it . . . or some other focal could pit the Children against the dwarven hold itself.
Situations that Firn'gaer pushes to the back of his mind, but not too far back. For the moment, he enjoys his drink and food of the dwarves.
The Vulfgard Wharf[DM SteveK] Monday August 18th, 2008 1:26:08 PM
Hannan listens with bright eyes, taking in what is said and not said. "You have been gone a long time if you feel the dwarves of Turak Nor will change because they must change." He shakes his head. "We are all too stubborn for that. Peace I will toast," and he does, draining his stien and wiping the foam from his beard, "for that gives the best opportunity for lawful growth and prosperity."
"Now, now," he chides, "Chaos is not Evil, and some change is necessary in every life, as the old priests say. Still, Chaos is not Law, and too much is as bad for dwarf society as none at all, so I will not bandy words with you, Master Savin."
"As to keeping my people safe, I do not fear your good intentions, Master Durgan, but would you hold your hand when provoked by rash words and warriors? You would be honor-bound to defend yourselves which would lay many of my people in thier tombs. No, it will be better if your mission is not told to the entire stronghold, to make the situation better without trying to change my people."
He fixes his eyes on the group. "And so we come to it. I want peace and an end to the conflict. I don't want to tell my father or Vulfgard that you are here to stop the war. To do so would bring the citadel against you, which may destroy you but certainly destroy the elite of my people and end for generations any prosperity. The best for me and my people is that you tell me exactly what you know and I will support you secretly to close this conflict."
He looks commanding and supplicating at the same time. "Now, give me names for these Chaos agents and I think I can fill in the puzzle!"

"We aren't here to change those of Vulfgard. That task would take more time than we have and might prove to be a task without merit. We just want to stop the war drums."
Jurgen doesn't know whether or not to trust Hannan, but even if the Children can't, the questions he is asking means that the gig is up either way. Talking to Hannan could only make their lives easier. He looks to the group, double-checking his line of thinking. If there is no disagreement, he speaks up. "Our enemy here is Krilanos Quendeck... An advisor to the DwarfLord, if I'm not mistaken. We believe he is trying to skew the situation here even further towards war. And we're here to have a little talk with him about that." He taps his sword gently.
Perimus and Yorrick d20+7=24 ; Monday August 18th, 2008 5:09:40 PM
Peerimus nods as Hannan speaks, the nature of what is good or evil and the differeing views of Chaos versus law, is a subject it looks like he will not have to go into. He silently offers a thankyou to Mother and Father for at least sparing him that again. The smile pops on his face, and he quickly dismisses and resumes a more appropriate gaze. Jurgen catches his eye and Peerimus gives him a very purposeful nod and then turns his very full most attention to Hannan to see if he can read a reaction. [Sense Motive 24]

ooc: George and Ted, you are funny!
Hannan's brows knit together at the mention of Krilanos Quendeck, a stormy expression that actually makes Peerimus relieved that the druid is not Krilanos. No, the CoC enemy is no friend of Hannan's... no friend whatsoever. "This human arrived in our citadel two years ago and has risen far in the councils of Lord Vulfgard. His knowledge has been broad and our smiths, miners, and rangers have all benefitted from his tutelage. It was he who found the pass in the mountains that led to the Green Valley, and the elves on the other side. At first, there was guarded trade until Krilanos and Radzak, my brother, were ambushed by elves. Radzak lay with a mortal blow while Krilanos was sorely wounded defending his body. It was from this evil in the Green Valley that fueled our hatred and the war."
"Lord Vulfgard is hot for vengeance and has called for dwarves across the Continent to slay the elves where they may be, and Krilanos is always beside him, encouraging the flames."
"But there are some priests and some more travelled of my people who are unsure, that Krilanos' actions have been very... convienient. And now you are here to bring another piece to the puzzle and identify Krilanos for what he really is; an Evil agent bent on destroying my people in a consuming war!"
But the questions of Durgan and Kazak bring the Captain back to thinking rationally and planning, and a smile creeps across his face. "This could be a great opportunity. Krilanos had set out only a couple of days ago with the Rangers to beat back the elvish forces in the Green Valley. He is away from Vulfgard and so you can follow to confront him away from our Halls. Perhaps in the Green Valley, you will also be able to discover how Krilanos was able to find it when no dwarf in a thousand years has seen this path less than a day from our stronghold, one that leads directly to the heart of far-away Dre Moria."
He waits to see the reactions and decisions of the Children of Chaos.
Peerimus and Yorrick Tuesday August 19th, 2008 5:21:40 PM
"Convenient indeed Captain and from we know of Krilanos your suspisions are well founded." Peerimus assures Hannan as his mind turns the problem. The Power of the Chaos mark to bring change to the Wold on both a large and small scale no dobht has something to do with how the secret path to Dre Moria was found. He may even be using the elven highway or some such similar ancient paths. The druid is very much deep in thought. The Green Valley, how to beat the rangers? Could the path be temporarily severed or blocked. Not likely not without study and time prevented that. No likely, they will need to speed along and overtake the dwarves and confront Krilanos. This unfortunately put the dwarves as direct opponents as well. They are, after all, heading to elvish lands to kill elves. Tensions will be high enough and if the CoC swoop up behind them with Trace, even with Trace disguised. Krilanos will beat the situation into a fury and it will quickly be lethal force kill them all and sort it out later from the dwarves.
Peerimus's eyes narrow and his lips purse as he continues thinking. He could envision the consequences to actions upon action and from move to move, but planning and originating the moves themsleves were not his strong suit. Still it was to him the others would look and he knew it. The pressure building just behind the bridge of his nose was starting again.
Savin Tuesday August 19th, 2008 5:53:25 PM
Savin nods at Peerimus's statement and adds, "It is our duty to face this agent of Chaos and fight him. If we should fall, then we have already fullfilled our duty to the fates but I don't want to see your dwarven comrades or and elves fall in the crossfire. Is it possible for you to show us this pathway and travel with us. While it is our duty to face Krilanos and expose him, you could refrain your dwarven brothers and hopefully keep them from harm."
Savin frowns and adds, "I do believe that your king has fallen for a trick of some sort. Either Krilanos has killed his son, your brother, or somehow tricked the elves into doing it but starting a fight between the two groups. Adding more deaths in unjustified war is wasteful and stupid." Savin looks deeply at the Hannan and says, "Are you willing to risk your fathers, the kings, wrath to help us and your people?"
Durgan Tuesday August 19th, 2008 10:46:31 PM
Durgan drains his mug of ale and slaps it down upon the table. "Our enemy is named, and we know where he is. Let's go."
Durgan adjusts his weapons and armor to a more comfortable traveling position. "Hannan? Point us in the right direction. we'll stir the pot and see what comes out."
Firn'gaer Wednesday August 20th, 2008 11:22:38 AM
Firn'gaer agrees with Durgan. "He is out of the safety of the stronghold, so now is our opportunity. I say we move and move quickly before word can reach him of our presence here."
On the Move[DM SteveK] Wednesday August 20th, 2008 12:34:31 PM
Hannan stops his pacing and stares at Savin for many long moments. Finally he nods. "yes, Master Savin, I also believe it is a trick of Krilanos that is holding my people in thrall, that the war is wasteful. yes, I am willing to defy my father and lord to help you and all my people."
"Come, I will take you as far as I may to the Green Valley. Protocol may constrain me to turn over guiding you to the rangers, but I want to see this conflict finished."
Actions prove how ready the Captain is, as Hannan retrieves his weapons and helmet and then pulls out a small travelling pack (obviously stocked for quick use). "Let us go." Striding purposefully out, he beckons the door guards who lock the office door and then follow the group. Soon enough, there are ten similarly armored dwarves in formation behind the Children of Chaos, all accompanying thier Captain and the heir to Vulfgard.
The CoC follow Hannan again through halls and corridors. The hier is taking a different route and it takes another hour before the group (Hannan, CoC, and ten dwarf guards) emerge from the mountains into the bright noonday sun. Exiting from a side door, a well-made gravel road travels down a scree slope and winds its way among cliffs and hills. There have been guard pairs at this door and at various spaces along this path that are clothed differently from Hannan and his guards. These dwarfs have chain shirts, axes and short bows, and are dressed to blend in with stone and branch. "Rangers", is Hannan's comment, "under command of Barla Ambereyes. Her beau was slain in the first conflicts with the elves, and she is an eager pupil of Krilanos. Be careful what you say around her or the Rangers."
The hours pass and the sun is dipping towards the horizon (Survival DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: { about two hours left until dusk. }) when the hike comes to a halt facing a rose granite Arch big enough for a wagon to go through. A number of ranger dwarves are here and it looks like they are blocking the way.
Firn'gaer can easily see the magic strongly emanating from the entire Arch.
Peerimus and Yorrick Wednesday August 20th, 2008 9:30:10 PM
Peerimus notes the 'rangers' as they pass and easily notes the time of day. "Stopping on this side of the arch before moving on is our best move at this point friends." Looking to the Captain, "Could we break a small camp here before the arch in safety, or should we push on for another hour or so?"
Durgan Wednesday August 20th, 2008 9:37:04 PM
Durgan has his crossbow out as the group travels through the mountainside.
"Kazak, marching with all these fellow dwarves while armed thus reminds me of good days hunting orcs with our kin. Many a hunting party set out just the same way, and more often than not came back with a good pile of goblin ears. hehehe."
As they approach the stone arch, Durgan tenses up. "Does anybody else smell trouble? Hannan, ye lead the way. If it comes to trouble know that we got yer back, and we'll try not to kill any of them."
Durgan keeps a firm grip on his crossbow, and moves to flank Captain Hannan and protect his right side.
Savin d20+6=17 ; Wednesday August 20th, 2008 9:46:02 PM
Savin easily marches along trying to keep his pace nice and slow like dwarves. He scans the area and easily keeps track of the time as they march along (ooc survival check 17). Once they come to the archway, he waits patiently for the dwarves of the group to help them get through but he is ready to employ his fists as gently as possible if some persuasion is needed.
The younger brother keeps his hands away from his weapons ...... and nods respectfully at the rangers at the Arch "Evening brothers "
Looking about casually ...acting as if this is an everyday event .....the dwarven warrior gives a relaxed attitude ......and awaits Captain Hannan's order to let them, thru .....sensing that it might be met with resistance . by the dour rangers
Jurgen Thursday August 21st, 2008 7:19:58 AM
"If we're not careful, we may prevent a war while making ourselves sworn enemies of Vulfgard." Jurgen shakes his head, not liking the situation. How could they possible incapacitate an entire escort. One that would, most certainly, be doing it's best to kill. Nothing comes to mind immediately and the paladin hopes that someone else has their own thoughts on the matter.
"I've no problem with us pressing on. The sooner we return to Heranmar, the happier I'll be..." He keeps a spell on his lips and a hand on his sword. The tension in the air was thick enough for even Jurgen to see. It made him uneasy and he was definitely on edge. Who could be sure that this entire situation wasn't a set-up? He walks on with the group, tightening his grip on his sword.

Trace continues with the others and senses that it is about to be dark (dc30), a good bit of walking could be done and then set up camp, not really thrilled to be this close to the dwarven rangers since being told that they are lead by someone bent on vengance. A single ranger is bad enough but a group would be deadly.
Trace thinks to his bow about the situation, about camping at the arch.

At The Rose Arch[DM SteveK] Friday August 22nd, 2008 1:37:36 PM
Yes, the dwarfen rangers are definitely blocking the way to the Arch. "A little far from your Doors, Captain", calls a grizzled veteran with one eye, one ear, a limp, and so much scar tissue that he can barely grow a beard, "or have you found some elf friends wandering about and are turning them over to Barla Ambereyes, the one truely responsible for the outer defenses of Vulfgard?"
Hannan keeps an unemotional facade and answers. "A Captain of the Guard would be away from his tasks, Master Luhkee, but the Heir of Vulfgard has further responsibilities beyond the Doors." Hannan Copperlord waits, staring at the ranger Luhkee, and it is the grizzled warrior who looks away first.
"All these with me are the renowned adventurers, the Children of Chaos. They have come across the length of the Wold to help us in finishing the conflict with the elves. I take them to Barla and the Green Valley and personnally vouch for them as Hier."
Uneasy murmuring is heard among the dwarf rangers until a lightly bearded female dwarf moves to the front. She eyes Hannan and the others with intelligent and fiery eyes. Sense Motive DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { This dwarf is a fanatic!} "We will accept every help in destroying the elves and finishing this conflict, even the help of elf-traitors." (Here, she looks pointedly at Trace) "But I am still Ranger Captain and tasked by Lord Vulfgard to lead this war. Give this Children of Chaos to my care and I will see them used effectively."
Hannan moves still closer to the rangers, but his voice is loud enough for everyone. "Barla Ambereyes, you are the chosen warleader, but the Children of Chaos are under vouchsafe of the Heir. I cannot leave thier actions to any other person, not even Lord Vulfgard himself." The female dwarf named Barla readies an angry retort, but is cut off by Hannan's raised hand. "Instead, I and my guard will fall into your command, and thus accomplish both our requirements."
Knowledge Local Dwarf Customs DC20 (Durgan and Kazak have +10 to roll) Highlight to display spoiler: { Hannan's announcement of vouchsafe means that the actions of CoC will reflect on Hannan's personal honor. Falling into Barla's command means that Hannan (and by honor extension) the CoC are under Barla's command. Hannan has set it up that CoC can pursue their agenda of ending the war and the burden of the actions will fall on Hannan.}
Barla accepts Hannan's offer and quickly begins her orders. "We are moving through the arch and attacking now", she states. "Ranger Company One goes first and spread as skirmishers. The Heir's forces come second as the most heavily armed. Ranger Company Two follows and is the reserve."
The dwarves are moving into position and allow Hannan to direct his own guards and the Children of Chaos. Hannan looks at Savin, Durgan, and Kazak. "This was the only way to get you into the Green Valley without bloodshed", he explains in a low voice. "I have never been through the Arch myself, but the rangers call it the Green Valley. I do not know what we will find on the other side, but somewhere in the Valley is Krilanos."
The CoC can make thier final preparations.
Savin d20=5 ; d20+6=11 ; Saturday August 23rd, 2008 9:56:50 AM
Savin listens to the exchange, nods his head and says to Hannan, "We will do our best to try and keep you out of political trouble. I appreciate how you are giving us a chance to find our mutual friend and end his threat." Savin purposely refrains from mentioning names. "Do you wish us to move off on our own or do you need us to stay with you?"
As the arch opens, Savin readies himself wondering what will be found on the other side of the arch.

Jurgen [AC: 35, HP 141/141] d20-1=8 ; Sunday August 24th, 2008 1:13:15 AM
"I think we'll have to be ready in a number of ways, once we reach the other side. Krilanos is one thing, but an entire army of elves as well. And this dwarven army." Jurgen sighs. He misses the distinction between Barla and the others, but still is unhappy with the guard. But Peerimus was right. Jurgen's thoughts go to chess, where often a pawn is sacrificed to protect the more valuable pieces. It made sense, but what would the repercussions be? The Children were certainly strong enough to withstand any personal cost, but what if their enemies reached out to Heranmar? "Enough of that." He mutters to himself. Such thinking would not help them now.
"On the other side, we should do everything in our power not to split up. A battle like this is apt to be chaotic. And I'm guessing we won't be coming back the way we came." He looks at the Arch casually. If they had other priorities, he might have been impressed by it.
Jurgen begins his preparations as well, casting Alter Self (Troglydyte) and Shield. He also pulls out a potion of Shield of Faith and gets ready to drink it, if the other side proves to be a battleground already. "For..." He winces as he realizes he has nothing cliche or witty to say, "freedom?"

Peerimus and Yorrick Sunday August 24th, 2008 12:45:59 PM
Peerimus attempts to keep a calm visage, but masking emotions is not what he does best and especially sensitive to the druid mood is Yorrick. The great Kodiak growls as the dwarf called Barla speaks of using the group to kill elves. Peerimus casts a side look and puts a steady hand on him. Speaking to Yorrick in the Ursine tongue by the Feather he wears, "They are consumed by the chaos Kilranos has worught my friend and are not to blame nor are they the enemy. Follow my lead and stay close to me in this.
When Hannan begins to explain, Peerimus simply nods to him, "Understood. And yes Jurgen, I certainly agree. As a group, we stay together, and no insult meant Hannan, but he is our primary defensive concern."
Durgan Sunday August 24th, 2008 6:44:09 PM

Into the Green Valley[DM SteveK] Monday August 25th, 2008 6:56:01 PM
The dwarves tighten armor and loosen weapons. On a silent signal from Barla Ambereyes, the first company of dwarves moves through the rose archway. The CoC can see that the dwarves do NOT disappear, but walk on thorugh a narrowing crevise until they turn a corner and are lost from view.
Hannan, his dozen guards, and the CoC are next. Walking through the arch, the CoC can niether feel nor see the use of magic, although thier Broken Spiral tattoos itch terribly as they pass the Rose Arch. Down the crevise they walk, and then turn a bend which soon opens up to a lush green valley.
Sunlight streams from a brilliant sun high in the sky, showcasing the valley below. The Green Valley is oblong like a teardrop, with the CoC and dwarves coming out of the smallest, highest end. Rolling hills covered with knee-length grasses and dotted with many shrubs and trees, the hills wend thier way among a couple small streams to a forested area near a pool of water on the opposite side.
There is no sign of elves here, but the dwarves are moving as if they are in hostile territory. Hannan is making sure that his guards give him lots of need to pay attention, and so he has little time to keep an eye on the Children of Chaos.
The next dwarf company hasn't appeared from the crevise yet...

Peerimus and Yorrick walk through the arch and the druid starts scanning the tree and brush for signs of an ambush. [spot 34] Peerimus moves to take up a position on the other flank of Hannan with Yorrick beside him. Leaving a casual 20' between himself and the dwarf lord. His tattoo twitched and peerimus looks down at it to give it a minor regard. "Kilranos is infused with the power as well. He may well know we are about, or rather someone with the Chaos markings is. As to recognizing us Savin, I don't really see how, but he will know we carry the mark. We are all connected by it and he may be far more in tuned with it than we are. Since we know of almost nothing of him, I think his lack of knowledge on us will simply keep us on an even field.
As Kazak informs Peerimus of more the weight of what Hannan did, the druid nods and replies, "And we shall not let that honor be tarnished."

Into the Green Valley[DM SteveK] Tuesday August 26th, 2008 9:30:18 PM
Durgan keeps near Hannan as the dwarves move out.
Kazak talks quietly to Peerimus and tells him of the ramifications of the conversation between Hannan and Barla.
Savin talks with Trace about the abilities and unknowns of Krilanos' fighting prowess.
Peerimus keeps watch on the nearby foliage for ambush and listens to his companions while providing his own thoughts.
Trace begins flanking on the left to use his skills to the best advantage.
Firn'gaer keeps up by floating on air, and uses his arcane skills to pick out any potential approaching opponents.
Jurgen also arrives on the defensive, casting Shay into the air to provide top cover for spying.
...........................
The dwarves continue on with about fifty of them ranged in a skirmish line, about 50 feet in front of Hannan, the guards, and the Children of Chaos. Arriving from the Rose Archway, the second company of sixty dwarves keeping more bunched and able to react to what the skirmishers flush out.
Moving for 10 minutes, the CoC can see the Valley's heavily forested other end ahead of them. To the left is a lush plant life surrounding a warm spring. To the right, there is almost no moisture and the barren ground is only interrupted by cactus and scraggly trees. The sun continues to shine almost from directly overhead.
Shay, Trace, and Peerimus have been able to spot movement in the heavy forested area. The shadows protect exactly what the things are, but there do seem to be quite a few in the forest. The leading dwarf skirmishers do not seem to realize there is anything in front of them yet.
Durgan Tuesday August 26th, 2008 10:41:54 PM

To act or not. The elves are about, but the force of dwarves and thier own presecne should keep the few who have been shadowing them from doing anything. "Yes Kazak indeed it is. Though for me a bit more undergrowth in the wood than I would prefer." No they needed to penetrate further, possibly locate Krilanos himself. Phah that would be a trick wouldn't it Peerimus takes a second look towards the drier ground. Within a single open valley, it or the lush forest to the other side was out of place. The valley was simply not large enough for a normal weather pattern Peerimus turns on his heel and move in a direct line towards the water. "Yorrick, lets get you a drink."
The druids eyes take in everything as he side treks towards the thicker near junglelike vegetation. [Know Nature 39 Spot 35] Perimus holds his tongue, now with more than 100 dwarves moving through. The scale of this is something they can not readily manage. It was time to move ahead and make contact.

Seeing the shadows, Jurgen wants to act, but holds back. Attacking too soon might make it impossible to find Krilanos. He wonders if there is any plan behind the dwarves other than simply attacking. He hadn't seen them set up any defenses. Mostly, this just seemed like a preemptive attack.
When Peerimus moves to the water, Jurgen joins him. He'll speak quietly, to the point where the Children have to strain to hear him. "We have to stop this attack. It won't matter what Krilanos has done once dwarves and elves start dying. They'll go to war. And then we won't have any way of stopping it... I think we need to get in the middle. Give both sides a target that they have to defend against and at the same time, find and eliminate Krilanos." He shrugs, as has become usual for him of late. "It'll make us fugitives, but if those are elves ahead, then we've got maybe seconds left to act before this conflict moves out of our hands..."
Peerimus and Yorrick Wednesday August 27th, 2008 4:19:41 PM
Peerimus agrees with Jurgen. "I plan to move swiftly ahead. Yorrick will remain with you Jurgen. We need to get ahead and I am best equipped to do so with the least amount of notice. Those are elves ahead waiting for the dwarves to get too close. Create an excuse to prevent Hannan from going any further. Hell just call him over here and say you found something.""
Into the Green Valley[DM SteveK] Wednesday August 27th, 2008 5:01:52 PM
Durgan and Kazak discreetly make comments on the group while sticking close to Hannan.
Peerimus is not really worrying about the elves right now for it is the vegetation that causes him some suspicion. Taking Yorrick, he quickly strides off toward the lake and semi-tropical vegetation on the west side of the Valley. The keen senses of the druid notes several interesting things. Highlight to display spoiler: {The first is the sun hasn't moved since the group entered the Valley almost 15 minutes ago. In fact, the sun standing at noon is completely at odds with the quickly setting sun when the CoC met the dwarves outside the Rose Arch. The vegetation around the lake is quite natural and looks like the lake itself is what is supplying both the warmth and the tremendous moisture required to have the plants grow so well on the western side. The hint of minerals in the air and the rising steam from the lake give Peerimus his final clues: a hot spring is here. There is no stream leaving the spring, and so can explain the lush plant life. Of course, that doesn't explain the desert to the east or the forest to the north.}
Trace glumly concludes that bloodshed will take place no matter what they do between the elves and dwarves, and only hopes that the CoC can restrain the less fanatic ones.
Jurgen follows Peerimus and speaks with the druid while he is checking out the lake. The Protector urges some sort of action, that allowing the confrontation to go on without hindrance will guarantee the war that hasn't yet started.
.........................
All the dwarves continue to advance at a steady 200 feet per minute. It looks like the skirmishers are aware of the shadows under the trees, for hand signals are passed back-and-forth, and now the dwarves are advancing while making use of the available cover of the singleton trees and shrubs on the rolling hills. The dwarves are now within extreme longbow range of the dense forest and the mostly-hidden elves, but there is currently no arrowfall from the elves.
The dwarves are tense, but seem determined to continue moving forward. The skirmishers have shortbows out, and the company behind Hannan have all unlimbered thier crossbows.

Shaking his head .... " their just to eager " grumbles Kazak as the dwarven rangers ready their weapons with too much zeal...... " well we should come up with a plan quite quick or blood will flow dats for sure "
Still with weapons sheathed ...... the dwarven warrior keeps moving forward ..... keeping Durgan within sight
Durgan Thursday August 28th, 2008 4:44:04 PM
"Agreed brother. You should never look forward to fighting but only fight when you must."
"Captain Hannan? Mebbe ye should let us take the lead? It is the most dangerous spot in the group and mebbe would give us a little respect with yer warriors."
Peerimus and Yorrick d20+23=32 ; d20+12=15 ; d20+20=33 ; Thursday August 28th, 2008 5:40:57 PM
While Trace and Jurgeen are right there, Peerimus points out the sun and the essentially odd nature of the Valley. "We may have traversed beyond the Wold. I am going to move up and get ahead of the dwarves. Yorrick look after Jurgen for the time being." Yorrick responds with a deep growl of agreement.
"Try an move past the dwarves and join me as soon as you can. It is time to find out precisely how this will happen. Peerimus shifts into a Cheetah and pounds into an ever increasing sprint [600' in 1 round] He then continues at a run for another 30 seconds. Coming up behind a rock and some tal grass, he shifts into a leapoard and melts into the background of tall grass and shrubs. [Hide 15] His sharp eyes ever vigilant on the deeper forest in front of him [Spot 33]

Jurgen [AC: 35, HP 141/141] Thursday August 28th, 2008 5:59:07 PM
Jurgen nods his head at Peerimus and almost gives Yorrick a friendly pat, but thinks better of it. While Peerimus sneaks forward, throws up a Message spell between himself and the Children. He considers including Hannan and struggles for a moment with the idea. He decides against it and moves his way forward with the group.
When he is in the midst of dwaves, he very loudly says, "Does anyone else see those figures up again, or is it just me? I'd swear we're moving right into a trap..."
Into the Green Valley[DM SteveK] Thursday August 28th, 2008 10:14:00 PM
Savin, Firn'gear, Kazak, and Durgan stay close to Hannan as the dwarves continue to advance. Advice comes from the CoC, and Hannan shrugs his shoulders. "I am not sure what Barla is doing", he confesses. "I was expecting Krilanos and a small group of dwarves on the other side of the Rose Arch, and so it seemed was Barla. Yet she is continuing with her war with the elves." He smiles at Kazak and raises his voice. "Your presence in the front may show the bravery of other folk and position you to quickly end this conflict in our favor", he says carefully.
Peerimus tells Trace and Jurgen what he is going to do and leaves Yorrick guarding the Protector. Shaping into a cheetah, he streaks across the Valley and hides as a leopard between the closing dwarves and waiting elves.
Jurgen returns to Hannan with Yorrick in tow and ensures that he warns the dwarves of the elves in the forest.
............................
The ranger companies smile and a couple even laugh out loud at Jurgen's comment. Luhkee shouts back, "Aye, longlegs, we know they are there. That's the reason we're gonna kill 'em, ain't it?" He engenders another laugh among the skirmishers.
The guards with Hannan are not laughing or smiling. They are intent in thier purpose to keep Hannan safe, and have formed a loose circle around the Hier of Vulfgard.
Peerimus can see the elves in the forest. Highlight to display spoiler: {The elves have longbows and while there seems to be only half of the strength of the dwarves, they are in a defensive forest with many arrows available...}

Savin Thursday August 28th, 2008 11:54:57 PM
Savin trots closer to Barla and says, "What is the plan? Are we meeting with someone or just looking for trouble. Marching towards an elven held forest while brave is foolhardy. You are fighting them on their terms. Where are your forces?"
Kazak Thursday August 28th, 2008 11:56:36 PM
Grinning at Captain Hannan's words " basically you want us to go first ..... heh .... so whatcha say Durgan shall we take the lead ??"
With a nod at Savin and Firn'gaer " whatcha think .??.. "
When Jurgan returns with the big bear " hey i think we should go out ahead and see if we can keep this from escalating ... at least as best we can " growls the dwarven warrior
"Exactly !! ....."Agrees Kazak with Savin "
Durgan Friday August 29th, 2008 10:43:07 AM
Durgan nods his head at his brother. "Aye. Let us be out front and see what happens."
Durgan moves out ahead of the dwarven skirmishers and bids the Children of Chaos to follow him. "This may be beyond our control. But if Krilanos is here, we won't find him by hidin' in the back!"
Trace and Shadow ac 29, hp 97/97 //Shadow ac 30 hp 44/44 Friday August 29th, 2008 1:30:41 PM
Trace moves over to back up Firn'gaer and to have cover fire to those moving forward, while next to Firn'gaer, "how many force cubes do you have and how big can you make them? I am thinking once we find Mr Krill and dispatch them we can force off most of the dwarves and they can cool off in the cubes while things settle down.
Jurgen [AC: 35, HP 141/141] Friday August 29th, 2008 3:41:08 PM
Jurgen joins the Children and moves ahead of the dwarves. He encourages the Children to get some distance from the army behind them. "Friends, I think we need to call Krilanos out. I might even put money on my guess that he's with the elves, right now. And with Peerimus in a position to see anyone acting shady, we'll know where he is when he tries to escape." If Peerimus is still within range of the spell, he'll include the druid in that conversation.
Firn'gaer d20+8=20 ; Tuesday September 2nd, 2008 10:35:46 AM
"I can't produce enough to contain all of the dwarves. The best I could do would be to separate them with force walls, but I don't know how effective that can be. The most it would do is delay any confrontation for a few minutes, but if they are bent on fighting there isn't much I can do to prevent it altogether." He says to Trace.
Firn'gaer moves forward with Durgan, while rising to a height of 20-ft. He does cast Elf Sight to enhance his vision.
Into the Green Valley[DM SteveK] Tuesday September 2nd, 2008 11:44:30 AM
The Children of Chaos discuss and decide that they have two objectives. The firrst is to at least attempt to stop the impending confrontation, and the second is to do something to make Krilanos come out of hiding. Jurgen even suggests that Krilanos may be with the elves and egging THAT side on. Yet with no good ideas for the latter, the CoC decide to do somthing about the former.
The two dwarf brothers nod at each other and pick up the pace, hustling forward to get ahead of the dwarven skirmishers, and Jurgen (with Yorrick), Savin, and Firn'gear follow suit.
It takes a minute of hustling through the rolling grassy valley to catch up, and then pass the dwarven skirmishers, but with a bit of jogging, the Children of Chaos is able to get a hundred feet ahead of the steadily advancing dwarf line. (10 rounds of x2 speed at 20 feet for Durgan and Kazak and assuming the others keep thier pace to the brothers')
Peerimus continues to stay hidden in the bushes between the forest and the advancing dwarves.
........................................
The dwarven skirmishers bristle at the Children of Chaos advancing and then passing the skirmish line, and Barla glares back at Hannan. The Hier gives a series of hand gestures that doesn't mollify the Ranger Captain, but at least she doesn't order her dwarves to open fire. Barla's face is stormy and watches the Children of Chaos very, very closely.
The elves are more numerous in the forested undergrowth, but still far less are seen than what the dwarves have arriving. The elves also continue to hold thier fire, probably because of the distance and the rolling hills and occasional tree and bush would make any targets very difficult to hit.

Peerimus peeks over his shoulder, Any move now will instigate Barla to have her dwarves attack the CoC. She is on the edge Peerimus looks back to the wood line. not much had changed. Elves were a patient lot and with good reason. Even waiting for the dwarves to close to 350' would allow for five maybe six volleys. Peerimus eyes the distance, no he could wait for the CoC to continue to seperate themselves. Peerimus creeps forward and further towards the drylands. move about 60' with Hide 30

Savin d20+18=19 ; Tuesday September 2nd, 2008 8:17:20 PM
OOC Savin asked some questions to Brala in his my last post. No answers or feedback at all?" DM SteveK: no, this was a brain-dump on my part, I'll post answers next.
Savin darts ahead easily catching up to Peerimus and asks, "I am going ahead to scout and see if I can help avert this impending disaster." Savin sprints ahead running full out for the trees holding his hands up in a non threatening way (base speed 80') He isn't sure if he is going to find elves or dwarves but he doesn't want to antagonize either. He looks ahead but sees nothing (spot check 19 natural 1)
Durgan Tuesday September 2nd, 2008 8:46:31 PM
Durgan continues his march out into the front. Seeing Savin sprint by, he puts the crossbow away and readies his shield, leaving his axe in it's leather sheath for the time being. "Well, they are either gonna talk to us, or start shootin' arrows. I reckon Savin is gonna find out which pretty quick."
Jurgen [AC: 35, HP 141/141] Wednesday September 3rd, 2008 1:11:18 PM
"We're waiting now. Peerimus and Savin are going to try to get to the elves, but if the attack starts... I think we should try to hold the middle. Not let either side pass. Which means we may have to fight Barla and her squad." He keeps his Shield of Faith potion in his hand. "Act now, without regard for us Peerimus. If you don't move soon, I'm going to give the dwarves something else to worry about ..."
"KRILANOS!" Jurgen bellows towards the elven forest. He's certain that the dwarves will wonder at his action, but he didn't think it was something an elven spy would do. And maybe Krilanos would show himself. Or hide in such a manner that revealed himself to Peerimus or Savin. "KRILANOS." And every few steps forward, the paladin shouts out the name again.

As Savin passes Barla, he questions the dwarven leader about the soundness of the plan. Barla Ambereyes doesn't seem to be in the mood to explain anything. "You get your sorry human beard back in the main force, that's the plan! You obviously have no concept of following orders, or the honor of the Heir, or how to fight elves. Now get back in line!" The fury in Barla's eyes grows as Savin sprints ahead and she watches the Children of Chaos very, very closely.
........................
Durgan, Kazak, Trace, Jurgen, Yorrick, and Firn'gaer all keep their place and distance from the skirmish line as it advances towards the woods. Feeling the impending doom of battle approaching, the CoC spread out a little to form less of a massed target.
Peerimus keeps under cover as only a shapeshifted druid in the wild can, and moves closer to the dry area of the valley to check it out.
Savin sprints out ahead of everyone, running as fast as the wind but trying to look non-threatening as he rapidly advances on the elves in the forest.
Jurgen decides that the tension is too much and that he should do something. "KRILANOS!!", the Protector shouts between the antagonists. Jurgen turns in place and looks to the woods for the enemy... "KRILANOS!!!"
....................................
As Savin sprints towards the trees, a new group of elves is revealed right in his path with bows bent! A couple of arrows arc out at the rapidly advancing Savin, but neither get close to hurting the experienced monk.
But it is Jurgen's actions that seems to create the biggest reaction. Shouting "Krilanos" again and again stops the dwarven advance cold. The dwarf skrimishers begin to look at each other and then stop to take cover at a chopped hand motion by Barla. The solid block of dwarves with and behind Hannan also take knees behind shrubs and trees. Barla Ambereyes shouts out to Jurgen and the Children of Chaos. (Durgen, Kazak, Trace, Firn'gear, and Jurgen can hear, Peerimus needs Listen DC 20, Savin needs Listen DC 30) Highlight to display spoiler: {"Get back here, you fool, before you give away all our positions and plans! Krilanos is waiting for us!"} She is almost hopping with rage and astonishment.
Yet the name doesn't only stop the plans of the dwarves... At a shout from the forest, the arrows stop shooting at Savin and the elves lower thier bows (though they are still strung and nocked). One elf looks like the leader, and Savin and Peerimus can see his keen ears have picked up Jurgen's shouts. He looks to Savin and gestures him to come into the forest. Savin can hear, Peerimus needs Listen DC 20, all others need Listen DC 30Highlight to display spoiler: {"If you know Krilanos, then you must be his promised reinforcements. Keep leading the dirt-grubbers into the trap and we will crush them all. Quickly! Get out of the way!"}

This is it. The moment right before battle is joined. Senses sharpen, and muscles twitch in anticipation. Durgan draws his axe and takes up a defensive posture against possible bowfire. "Eh? Savin then looks around, trying to spot the agent of chaos, (spot check 20, can't seem to get above at 10 lately) He calls, "Krilanos Show yourself! Come out your cravenly coward! Why do both the dwarves and the elves call you their ally? Why are you leading both of these noble races to battle? Why are you trying to stoke their hatred! Show yourself you son of a goat! Explain why Lord Vulfgard's son was killed in your presense and you blamed the elven people. What lies have you told elves? Who are you really in league with!? Why do you wish to weaken both sides! Show yourself!!!"
Savin will look to the elvish leader and say, "I know you don't know me. I know I haven't earned your trust, but you must believe me when I say something isn't right here. Krilanos claimed that you killed Lord Vulfgard's son and this is why the dwarves march to war. I don't know what he has told you but I know he isn't to be trusted. My name is Savin, a monk of Domi, and a member of the Children of Chaos. We fight Chaos when we can find it and believe Krilanos is an agent of Chaos. I am asking you to withdraw. You guys can always slaughter each other later if you find it justified but I would hate to see you at war over a lie."

Peerimus' ear twitches and flicks back towards the dwarves. [Listen 20] Ambush then Barla. Perhaps you should have told the heir the plan. Peerimus the Cheetah smiles, Not that is would have helped. Children of Choas indeed we are. He could not hear the elves, [Listen 10] but Savin's shouts are clear [Listen 11] and the druid's Cheetah eyes can easily keep everything in front of him in sight. [Spot 38] A quick glance back confirms Hannan relatively unguarded. A fine target to stoke the fires if Krilanos can take him out and make it loook like an elven attack. Unfortunately there was little to be done. Savin was good on his own and could quickly get to the group if necessary. The dwarves are hunkered down and not moving forward and so Peerimus thinks his best move is to get back to the group. Form up and see what is about to happen.
The cheetah bolts from its hiding place and quickly closes the gap to the group. [Run 60x4]

Jurgen [AC: 35, HP 141/141] d20+1=19 ; Thursday September 4th, 2008 1:52:33 PM
When Jurgen hears Barla's demand, he ignores it. It wasn't her reaction he wanted. He continues looking towards the elves. He has no hope of making out what the leader says to Savin, but he can hear Savin's reply. "Sometimes the simplest action..." Jurgen smiles. It was nice to be right.
Trusting Savin to speak with the elves, Jurgen turns to the dwarves. His voice continues to boom, no longer shouting for Krilanos, but still loud and powerful. "Hannan, son of Kazan Copperlord, Captain of the Guard and Heir to the throne of Vulfgard." He was making sure to go above Barla's head. There would likely still be blood spilled today, if she was truly Krilanos' pupil. And even still, he wasn't really speaking to Hannan, but to the rest of the dwarves. "As per your order we have uncovered a plot to instigate a war between Vulfgard and Silverleaf. A plot that took the life of your brother, as well as countless other dwarves. And elves. Neither dwarf nor elf know their true enemy in this conflict. But let me say it now, for both sides to hear, Krilanos has played you all for fools."
After speaking, Jurgen activates his Detect Evil. He wasn't interested in the dwarves or the elves, but more if Krilanos was around. If not, finding him would likely require some work. And Jurgen's mind goes to much the same place as Peerimus'. If Hannan was attacked here, then all their work could be for not. He readies an action to cast Dimension Door and Interpose himself next to the Heir if anyone makes a move to attack or cast a spell at Hannan.
