Wet-Weather Blues

DM Kathy  2d6=5 ; d6=1 ;
Monday August 25th, 2008 11:14:35 PM

You all watch in fascinated horror as the entire hillside seems to tumble down onto you. Kiel and Rollo leap nimbly out of the way, avoiding the slide entirely.

The rest are not so lucky, and are hit by a wave of mud and rock. Selemar, Sebastian, and Hmark manage to stay on the trail. They are banged up a bit [5 points damage], and will probably need to be dug out. They are otherwise fine, though.

Zeph and Axara, however, do not react quickly enough. They are swept off the ledge and down the steep slope. They are rolled about, in addition to being hit by the slide [6 points damage, due to my unerring ability to roll 1s on a d6]. They come to rest in percarious positions; Axara half-sitting, half-kneeling on a narrow ledge, and Zeph clinging to a stunted tree.

In the gorge below, the river roars.

Tuesday August 26th, 2008 2:29:47 AM

Just into action.

Rushing to Zeph and Axara, taking in the situation.
Turning to Rollo: Grab your rope and help bring Zeph up, I will work on getting Axara back on solid ground.
Grabbing his 50' of rope, Kiel begins tieing a huge knot on one end for a bit of weight to get it to her without taking the chance of crashing the ledge under his weight. Don't worry Axara, we'll get you back here quickly. Just don't move. Saying a quick prayer to the powers that be for Zeph, Axara and the others safe rescue.
Kiel then starts twirling one end of the rope, and launches it to Axara. *used hero point to reroll hit ac20*
Axara, tie that end around you securely and then hang on as tight as you can. I will slowly start pulling you back to me.
*rolled a strength check of 15 to start pulling Axara safely off the ledge and up the slope*

Selemar
Tuesday August 26th, 2008 9:08:43 AM

this is rathwer unpleasant. better stay here until they get the others up. Don't need another landslide

Selemar tries to get semi-comfortable while he waits for those below him to be pulled up. If Sebastian or Hmark move, he'll point out the danger to those below, otherwise, he'll wait until Zeph and Axara are ok.

Sebastian [AC:16, hp:12/17]CharSheet Party Loot List:
Tuesday August 26th, 2008 11:03:39 AM

Sebastian spits the mouth full of mud out, ”Eww yuk! We were almost killed by a mountain, just because Lady Dulcet fears a book. The bard starts to struggle to free himself.

When Selemar suggest the ones half buried on the trail remain still, Sebastian continues to try and free himself obviously not liking to be trapped, ”What if the rest of the mountain decides to come down or the stuff were stuck in gives way on its own? I don’t think will make a big difference one way or the other.” Never the less Sebastian tries to be more carful as he continues to try and free himself.

Hmark (19/24 hp)
Tuesday August 26th, 2008 11:34:59 AM

Hmark grunts in pain and shock as the landslide engulfs him. Almost immediately he recognizes the danger of the nearby ledge, and struggles against the momentum of the slide to avoid going over.

As the rumbling subsides, the lad takes stock of his situation. He's cut up and buried up to his chest, but seems to be OK. After listening to Selemar and Sebastion, Hmark decides to just take a bit of a rest, and see what happens.

Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29]  d20-1=18 ;
Tuesday August 26th, 2008 1:50:47 PM

Kiel's suggestion is a wonderful one, the only flaw is that Rollo does not possess a rope. So he decides to help Kiel recover the two fallen friends.

A shovel and a rope. I must remember to make a list when we are through with all this.

Zeph AC17 HP19  d20+2=18 ; d20+7=12 ;
Tuesday August 26th, 2008 2:08:33 PM

Zeph holds onto the tree for dear life, eyes wide as he looks up at the rest of the party shuffling to help him and Axara.

"Hey Axara!" Zeph shouts to the Sorceress. "Are you OK over there?"

Zeph then looks at the distance between him and the path, wondering if anyone has a rope long enough to reach him. Then Zeph begins to look to see if his body is horribly injured or not.

Bloody leg, maybe a broken rib or something. I think my finger nails got pulled back by grabbing onto this tree here. Zeph thinks to himself as he sees blood coming from his well-made gloves.

(Strength check to pull himself up into a better position on the tree= 18)

If Zeph can pull himself into a good position, then he will begin to equip himself with his climbing gear and plan is ascent upwards.

OH NO, the BOOK! Zeph thinks suddenly as he reaches for his backpack and begins to search. It better still be in here, or we are in deep trouble.

(balance=12, just incase you wanted me to roll it)

Axara (12/18 hp)  d20+2=14 ;
Tuesday August 26th, 2008 2:15:19 PM

Bruised and bleeding, Axara wills herself to remain very, very still on the ledge. All the woman can see in front of her is open sky. She risks a quick look at the river below - far, far below it turns out - and her breath comes in gasps.

Don't panic. don't panic. don't panic she whispers to herself.

Somebody calls out to her from above, but she dares not look up, for fear of slipping into the abyss. She becomes aware of a rope with a knot on it slithering down next to her. Carefully, ever so carefully, Axara reaches for it, and slowly ties it around herself.

[Use Rope 14]

DM Kathy
Tuesday August 26th, 2008 11:32:55 PM

After the slide, Sebastian tries, carefully, to free himself. [Make a Strength check, please.] His efforts don't seem to be further disturbing the slide, but it's difficult to say for certain. Hmark and Selemar decide to stay where they are for the time being.

Kiel begins working to rescue his companions. He tosses a line to Axara who is nearly paralyzed with fear on her ledge. She does manage to tie the rope around herself, however, and Kiel is able to pull her part way up the hill, with Rollo's help.

[Kiel, please make another Strength check; and Rollo, make another check if you're going to continue to assist. Axara, if you are helping climb, make a Climb check.]

Zeph, meanwhile, manages to climb up on top of his tree. A sudden thought has him reaching for his backpack. It still seems to be tied securely shut, but it's going to be difficult to inventory the contents just now. All of his twisting around nearly sends him pitching down the steep slope again, but he manages to right himself and hang on. He'd like to don his climbing gear, but it's also in his backpack and it's going to be hard to reach.

[OOC: You can make a Climb check without the gear, or you can hang tight and wait for a rescue.]

Wednesday August 27th, 2008 11:17:42 AM

Seeing that Sebastian doesn't seem to be doing any further damage, Hmark makes a tentative attempt to work himself out of the slide.

Zeph decides its probably better to not test his luck to check his inventory in this situation... a loss of balance could spell the end for both him and end the chances of destroying the Evil Book.

Better I not risk everyone's safety. I should invest in a Handy Haversack. I hear they are quite useful in such a predicament. Zeph thinks

Zeph takes the time to look around and take in his surroundings. Zeph would like to know how far he is from the river below and how far he is from the path above.

Zeph looks over at Axara, hoping that she ends up all right. "I'll just wait my turn." Zeph shouts in that direction.

Spider Climb... that is the spell I need right now. I really should start some Wizardly training ASAP. Zeph thinks

Kiel pulls again, and with a little help from Rolo, manages to drag Axara back up to the road. The sorceress is muddy, bruised, and perhaps a little shaken, but otherwise fine.

Sebastian manages to worm his way out of the mud. [Yes, Escape Artist makes perfect sense.] His legs are absolutely covered in mud, but he is no longer trapped.

Hmark makes an effort to free himself, but is not at all successful.

Selemar contents himself with wishing for a bear. Lango walks over to him and sits atop the mud, tongue lolling. It looks like he's laughing.

Zeph decides to stay where he is for the time being.

Kiel [AC:18 - HP:26/26]  d20+5=11 ;
Thursday August 28th, 2008 2:10:50 AM

After assuring Axara that she is safe, Kiel unfastens the rope from her, and turns his attention to Zeph.
With Rollo's help.

Twirls the rope, knot end, and launches it down to Zeph. (hits ac11)
Carefully grab a hold of that rope Zeph. When you are ready give us a count of 3 so Rollo and myself can get ready and then grab the rope with your other hand, releasing your grip on the branch. You may fall a few feet and get jerked into the side of the hill but do not worry, we will Not let you fall.

I will wrap some strips of cloth on both my hands for a better grip (and so the rope doesnt burn them should it slip some) and then brace myself for a jerk that I know is coming.
Rollo, prepare yourself like I am. And brace yourself. This one is gonna be a bit more than Axara's rescue

Selemar  d20=13 ;

Axara (12/18 hp) Sub MikeK
Thursday August 28th, 2008 9:54:24 AM

Axara quietly stands behind Rollo and Sebastian. She's still shivering from her near-death experience.

Oh, and the fact that the group is in yet another situation where she is absolutely no help - fie, I'm part of the problem! - is not lost on the subdued sorceress.

Hmark (19/24 hp)  d20+1=4 ;
Thursday August 28th, 2008 10:11:27 AM

Hmark makes another go at it, and makes no more progress than he did in his last attempt.
[Str 4]
"Well, Dread," he curses softly.

The man is stuck. No doubt about it. Wiping the excess mud from his face with a free hand, Hmark can do nothing but wait for his companions to dig him out.

Sebastian [AC:16, hp:12/17]CharSheet Party Loot List:  d20=10 ;
Thursday August 28th, 2008 10:15:21 AM

Covered in mud, but free Sebastian breaths easier as he wipes hopelessly at the muddy mess, "Yuck, I'll never get all this mud out of my clothes."

Then seeing there are still others stuck and needing help, the bard grabs the end of the rope and helps pull (str check: 10 Aid?) with all his might which isn't much.

Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29]  d20-1=6 ;

Rollo is greatful for the bard joining the rescue effort, and readies himself although his arms are still a bit wiggly from the last set of pulls.

Zeph reaches for the rope carefully and begins to tie it around himself if he can. If he cannot reach the rope where Kiel threw it, then Zeph will try to either climb towards it to reach it or jump for it, whichever would work more. (I dont have a visualization of where the rope is compared to myself)

Zeph looks up, "Ready guys? This should be a piece of cake." Zeph shouts up.

"One... two... three!" And with that Zeph will either jump to the rope or begin to climb up the mountainside, whichever is applicable.

Selemar begins trying to work his way out of the mud. It's slow going, but he manages to get himself most of the way out [one more Strength or Escape Artist check].

Hmark, not to be outdone, tries again, but has no more success this time.

Axara stands nearby, shivering from her near-catastrophe.

Rollo tries once again to help, but is unable this time. Sebastian, however, gamely picks up the rope and begins helping to pull.

Kiel tosses the rope down to Zeph, protects his hands, and gets ready to pull with all his strength. After Axara's rescue, it's perhaps a little disconcerting to have the "rescuee" nimbly tie the rope around himself and scramble halfway up the cliff like a monkey. [One more successful Climb or Strength check should have him at the top.]

Axara calms down a bit more, and notices that while she is OK, some of the others, particularly Hmark, are still stuck. Briefly, she contemplates walking over and giving him a hand.

Not that I'd be any help. And what would he be thinking while I'm bending over and pulling on him? No, I think he'll be fine for a few minutes longer.

She stays where she is, rubbing on her sore shoulder.

Kiel [AC:18 - HP:26/26]
Friday August 29th, 2008 5:41:20 PM

Seeing that all is well with Zeph he turns to the others. Spying Axara rubbing her shoulders, with wet and muddied hair, and a brief shiver he pulls a blanket out of his backpack, and wraps her in it. Patting her shoulders he looks in to her eyes, making sure she looks back at him and then smiles, saying for her to hear: You did good and you'll be fine. Take a few moments for yourself then help us with your comrades.

Kiel then makes a beeline to Hmark, and starts helping to dig him out. After helping to free Hmark, Kiel then takes stock in the situation while retrieving his rope.

Zeph gets to the top of the climb and immediately begins to search his belongings to see if anything has been lost, especially the Book of the Guided Way.

Kiel half-heartedly throws me the rope after using a heroic effort to save Axara. Then he leaves my safety in the hands of a Gnome who probably barely has the strength to wear his own armor and Sebastian, who is likely of lesser strength than most men. Then he goes over to brush the chick off and make sure she is OK. AND I HAVE THE BOOK. Kiel is obviously thinking with the wrong head here. Zeph thinks, rather furiously as he inspects his belongings.

"Some party members need to take into consideration the best interest of the party and our mission rather than self-interest." Zeph says to noone in particular as he repacks his belongings and begins to continue down the trail.

"Rollo, can you cast a healing spell or two when we get a chance?" Zeph says, trying not to let his anger boil over into his speech too much.

Zeph takes a quick check, and luckily, the Book of the Guided Way is still with him.

Rollo is able to provide healing for Zeph and Axara, while Sebastian heals and cleans himeself.

Selemar manages to free himself, flinging gobs of mud all over Lango. The wolf gives himself a vigorous shake, partly returning the favor.

With Kiel's help, Hmark is able to dig himself out. He nearly leaves a boot behind, but manages (barely) to stay inside it.

You take a moment to survey yourselves. Everyone is exhausted, and everyone (save Sebastian) is muddied to a greater or lesser extent. Some people are still a bit bruised, though the worst of your hurts have been cured.

All in all, you've come out of this little escapade pretty well. It's probably not a good idea, however, to hang out on this part of the trail. And the grove where you left the wagon is just a few hours away.

And his brain points out to the rest of his body - There might be another one...

"Right." Hmark responds, pushing himself to his feet. "Let's get out of here."

Sebastian checks on the lead-lined box, and it is just as he left it. The rest of the group, realizing it is unwise to linger, begins hurrying down the road.

Your footing is treacherous in places, and you spot a couple of places where the ground looks suspiciously ready to slide, but luckily you pass through unscathed. Well, scathed no further than you are.

At last, the road curves away from the steep gorge and all you have to contend with is the normal, squelchy mud of the road.

Shortly after noon, you reach the grove where you left the wagon. (You did have animals with you on the journey, but I was too softhearted to pitch any of them over the side).

Sebastian speaks fondly of the Green Rooster, the inn you stayed at on your way here, but you will not be able to reach it tonight. You now recall that it was a full day's journey from the Rooster to this very grove, and since it is now past noon, you don't have time to get there today.

You can camp here, knowing this for a good campsite and with the promise of an inn stay tomorrow night, or you can push further down the road, trusting to Kiel and Selemar to find you a good camping spot tonight.

Here is a good spot. There is grass for the animals and since the wagon shows no sign of being rummaged it's a safe bet it's a safe spot. Besides, a good evening and night's rest will do us all alot of good. Gives us time to boil up some water so each of us can clean up some and take note of any other wounds we might have aquired.

Kiel then sets up a tie line for the animals, unsaddles Phoenix , brushes~combs~cleans the hooves~wipes off the wetness and sets up a feed bag and bucket of water. Then puts on a horse coat to help ward off the night's chill. Then goes over and tends to the others in the group, including setting up Axara's privacy spot on the wagon.

After all that is done, Kiel then takes some of the hot water, strips off his clothes down to his skivvies (so as not to embarass Axara too much) and takes a "sponge" bath. Then dons a cleaner pair of clothes. Then sets to cleaning his weapons. And eats a nice meal, keeping to himself as he does so.

Standard operating procedure for watches .

Kiel then sets up his bedroll between the wagon and Phoenix and gets some rest before his watch.

Sebastian [AC:16, hp:17]CharSheet Party Loot List:
Thursday September 4th, 2008 10:53:04 AM

Sighing Sebastian realizes it another night on the hard ground, "Ahh, but the Green Roster had such soft beds, and the girls were so pleasant. Oh well tomorrow night then. I'll take the last watch."

Sebastian practice playing his flute by the fire while the others get cleaned up. (Preform: take-10: 14)

Hmark (19/24 hp)
Thursday September 4th, 2008 4:13:41 PM

Hmark trudges along with the group back toward the grove. The wet mud covering him from head to boot gradually dries, turning the man, his clothes, and his equipment into a caked, uniform grey.

"Dread," he mutters, disgusted with the feel of his skin. He looks for a spot on himself to rub his palms clean, and fails completely. Finally, he rips down some leaves from an overhanging branch and uses them to wipe his face and hands.

At the grove, he also uses whatever water is available to clean off equipment and generally get himsef uncaked. By the time he's done, he's still pretty dirty, but he's got most of the mud out of most of the places - and the red hue of his bow is plainly visible. The rest can wait.

Hmark takes the shift with Kiel.

Axara [AC: 17 HP 18/18]
Thursday September 4th, 2008 9:13:51 PM

Axara goes to her "spot" on the wagon and fully undress herself. Then she puts on a blanket and goes down the wagon and toward a spot where she feels no one can take a peak at her.
She makes sure to look at the ground as she walks to avoid making eyes contact with any man in his skivvies.
Once she feels secure, she will take out some water and clean as much of the mud as she can. The process will be long and tedious but the sorceress will do her best to retrieve her good look. Hopefully, no one in the group is a Peeping Tom although it is quite tempting to find out what exactly is under that robe.

When she feels she is clean enough, she will put the blanket on and return to the wagon and get dressed.

She will take her watch at the end of the night.

All things considered, you decide to stay where you are, preferring a known campsite over gaining a few hours on your destination.

Accordingly, you fall into the familiar routine of making camp and setting watches. Some of you also attempt to clean up, and do manage to get the worst of the caked mud off of you.

The night is uneventful, except that it starts to rain again.

Morning is cold and drippy...and yet. And yet the sky is lighter earlier than it was when you first returned to Cinnamon Valley. The air no longer holds the chilly bite of late winter, but rather the soft promise of spring. Wildflowers are poking up all along the road, and birds sing heartily even in the damp.

Your journey to the Green Roster is therefore not unpleasant. The rain lets up around mid-morning, and the afternoon could almost be descirbed as warm. Best of all, you have the anticipation of hot food, warm baths, and soft beds tonight.

You arrive safely in the last stretches of afternoon, and find the inn much as you left it. The stable-lass takes charge of your mounts with a smile and a "Welcome back, gentles!" The landlady again is able to furnish you with rooms, and the youngest sister is kept busy drawing bath after bath.

Supper that evening is fried fish ("Tab and Javo went down to the creek this afternoon," explains the serving-girl), served with turnips, potatoes, pickled beets, and plenty of fresh bread.

After supper, the serving-girl shyly asks Sebastian if he will play for them all again. "Folks're still talking about the last time," she says with a smile.

Axara [AC: 17 HP 18/18]
Friday September 5th, 2008 6:59:01 AM

After an incredible long time spent in the bath tub (which is nothing morethan a laundry tub), Axara gets dressed. She feels clean and refreshed.
After eating the fried fish, she returns to her room. "I am familiar with the bard work. I'll pass for tonight and will take advantage to catch up on my beauty rest."

Kiel [AC:18 - HP:26/26]  d20+1=18 ; d20+3=13 ; d20+4=19 ; d20+7=8 ; d20+7=8 ;

Upon arrival at the Inn, when the stable girl offers to take care of the horses, once again Kiel politely tells her that he will put up the horse for the evening citing he doesn't take well to strangers. And Kiel, follows her in with Phoenix. After tending to his faithful steed, and giving him an extra flake of hay and an extra scoop of honey oats, Kiel goes to the Inn for a long, hot bath. Washing every nook and cranny thoroughly. And asks the girl in charge of the bath if she could have someone wash all his cloths, save for the cleanest of the dirty clothes he has. (don't wanna walk around the Inn naked, mind you)

After a filling meal, and a couple tankards of ale, Kiel sits back for some of Sebastians music, watching the tavern's patrons. (for sign of anyone taking an extra interest in the group - sense motive: 18)

After finishing his last ale, Kiel decides to take a tour (patrol) around and through the inn. Wanting to makie sure there will be no suprises lurking about. (listen: 13, search: 19, spot: 8, survival(track): 8 (for anything not normal) ) And once satisified, he goes back in, and checks in on Axara. (she's rubbed me the wrong way at first but is growing on him) Then turns in for a long evening, propping a chair in front of and under the doorknob to his room for an added air of safety. And of course, weapons within easy reach.

Zeph AC17 HP23  d20+5=16 ;
Friday September 5th, 2008 11:38:28 AM

Zeph eats his food happily as he looks about for anything suspicious. (Spot = 16)

How quaint a place. And how boringly uneventful. I swear if something doesn't happen soon, I am going to charge Lady Dulcet for boring me to death. Zeph thinks.

Zeph then turns to Hmark, and begins to probe... mostly out of boredom."So, tell me about this bow of yours. It looks quite sturdy. There must be a story behind it."

Zeph will then retire to his room, sharing it with whomever, and will read by candlelight until he falls asleep.

Selemar
Friday September 5th, 2008 11:49:45 AM

Bathing does sound good. When he's presentable, Selemar heads back to the common area to listen to the bard. He's happy to chat with any locals who approach, but otherwise relaxes with the group.

Lango will stay upstairs, in case people don't like wolves. Hopefully, Selemar will bring fish. He's sometimes good that way.

Sebastian [AC:16, hp:17]CharSheet Party Loot List:  d20+4=24 ; d20+6=25 ;

Sebastian smiles at the shy serving-girl, "I would love to play again for such an appreciative crowed. I'll take a single room too, so that I don't disturb anyone if I stay up too late." The bard takes out his flute and start to play a few tunes (Perform flute: 24 {nat 20!}). As he is having a jolly time, Sebastian will stay up late playing into the wee hours.

Seeing the late hour and that all his fellow companions have turned in, the bard calls an end to the performance, thanking his audience. Before turning in the bard, takes short walk to get some fresh air and stretch his limbs.

Rollo[AC:21 HP:29/29]
Friday September 5th, 2008 3:58:43 PM

Rollo spends a large portion of his watch discussing the previous day's events to a small puddle that had formed in his boot, apologized for the earlier altercation on the hill, and then dumped the water onto the ground giving it a wave good bye. He then spent the other half of his watch, and bit of the next carving tiny wooden mugs from a significantly stunning hunk of firewood. He placed the mugs on a rather large and colorful mushroom he located in a hollow log, before retiring for the remainder of the evening.

When dawn came he asked Eberyon to make whole his damaged copy of "The Life of Sir Haakharn" and then set off with the group to the inn.

He had vague recollections of the last visit, his mind must have wandered off as it had a habit of doing.

Hmark (23/24 hp)
Friday September 5th, 2008 4:31:32 PM

Hmark has absolutely no issues turning over Stardancer to the stable-lass. He heads for a bath as soon as its available. Like the rest of the group, it takes the lad some time to regain the feeling of "clean", and its a much happier camper that emerges in the common room for some bread, meat, ale, and a song or two.

Zeph asks about the bow, and Hmark's face brightens as he turns to run his hand tenderly over the weapon.
"Her name is Red," he notes lovingly. "I made her myself in the back of our barn. Took me six months, and three tries. I broke the first two, but Red...Red I got right."

Rollo is able to restore "The Life of Sir Haakharn" to its former undamaged condition.

At the inn, Axara retires early. Kiel spends some time checking around, but finds nothing out of the ordinary. He retires with his usual precautions.

Sebastian stays up late, playing for anyone who will listen. One by one, Selemar, Hmark, Rollo, and Zeph retire, leaving the bard in the common room with a few sleepy-eyed farmers and the serving girl.

The morning is fair, and you come downstairs to find breakfast laid out for you--bread, soft cheese, soft-boiled eggs, and a big iron kettle of porridge. You recall that the inn seems to serve breakfast only to overnight guests, so you have the common room pretty much to yourselves.

One by one, you make your way downstairs to eat and start your day...except you do not see Sebastian. The eggs are gone; only a heel of bread and some porridge remains, but still no sign of the bard. No sound from his room.

Eventually, you become curious (or worried, or impatient) and mount the stairs to see what might be keeping him.

The door to his room is unlocked. His cloak and goves are in the room, as are a few odds and ends of his possessions. Most of is things, however, are not there, and his bed has not been slept in.

Kiel [AC:18 - HP:26/26]  d20+7=10 ;
Monday September 8th, 2008 2:52:28 AM

Waking up in the morning feeling refreshed, Kiel takes a few extra minutes to wake up, stretching.
Opening his door he notices a pile of clothes laid in a nice bundle by his door, and picks them up, going back into his room.
Must remember to tip that girl. She did a wonderful job in getting all the mud and sweat out.

After getting dressed in his clean clothes, and packing up his gear, Kiel heads down to have a good hot breakfast before heading out to get Phoenix ready.
Thinking at first that maybe the bard got "lucky" after everyone turned in. Then truly starting to worry when Kiel sees all the staff present, Kiel is the first to bound up the steps to get the Bard. Noticing the door unlocked, some of his gear in the room but no sign of being used and most of all, the "special" bag missing, Kiel races back downstairs, passing people going up the stairs, with a look of worry on his face.
Racing out of the Inn, Kiel heads to the stables to see if the Bard's horse is still there, if so Kiel will begin searching for clues (tracks) for the Bard, seeing if he wandered off or was forced to wander off.
(Kathy, I was thinking of taking 20 when I hit the roll, would it be ok to replace that roll with taking 20 on the track? If so, I got a 27)

Axara wakes up feeling refreshed and in better mood than in a long time. she picks her mirror from her back pack and looks at herself. "hm.... not to bad .. I look nearly presentable today .... not than any of my companions would notice .... "

She goes down to the common room and she is jovial and pleasant, joking with every one. Her mood start to get worse when she realizes that Sebastian is missing.

She goes up to his room and turn white when she realized the book is missing. She looks at Kiel and Zeph and shakes her head. "Silly proud bard, so easily fooled by compliment! I do not believe his disparition and more importantly his backpack is an accident. Hopefully, we can catch them. Going forward, I propose that the backpack is never left alone. I do not care if it is me and I need privacy. The mission goes first. It would also make sense to rotate who is carrying it to confuse potential suitors."

Rollo doesn't remember getting back to his room, so it was a good night.

Awakening to the smell of a freshly cooked breakfast he trots into the dining hall with a smile on his face and a whistle on his lips.

"Good morning all." The gnome bellied up to the table and made no excuses as he gorged himself on the fine buffet.

As the morning progressed he noticed as more and more of the party scurried up to Sebastian's room and rushed out with a worried expression, and began searching the inn.

Rollo grabbed an egg and shoved it into his mouth before heading over the elf and his wolf who was now sniffing at the ground.

"What are we looking for?" The gnome sprayed a bit of egg as he talked.

After being briefed on the situation, Rollo walks over to the bar maid, "Good morning m'lady, as you can see we have misplaced our bard. You wouldn't happen to have seen him wander off this morning? Perhaps with the young lady who was here last night? Any idea where she may be?"

Hmark follows the others around, listening carefully. After a while, he begins to piece together what the rest of the group believes is the cause of Sebastian's disappearence.

The book made Sebastian take off?!? he wonders incredulously. It seems far fetched. But the others obviously believe it. So, he says nothing. He just thinks how he can help.

The stable hasn't been covered.

Hmark heads over to the stable, and asks the girl there if she's seen the bard recently.

DM Kathy
Monday September 8th, 2008 10:14:51 PM

Finding his bed not slept in, you have no doubt that Sebastian is missing, and everyone springs into action.

Zeph and Axara search the room [yes, you can take 20 on this]. You find his cloak and gloves, along with a few other odds and ends (a comb, a file, a shirt that needs mending). Gazing around the room, you can form a rough picture of Sebastian when you first arrived, coming into the room, tossing his cloak and gloves aside, pulling out his comb to comb his hair, pulling out his torn shirt to perhaps get it mended here. Leaving the other possesions in his pack for now. Going downstairs for dinner. After dinner, and performing, coming back and grabbing his pack to go for his walk. Protecting the book? But not wearing his cape--perhaps being overheated from the warm common room?

And, of course, not returning.

Rollo, hearing of the news, asks your hostess, perhaps unwisely mentioning Sebastian and her daughter in the same breath. All the Diplomacy checks in the world aren't going to help when a mother thinks her daughter's being toyed with, so off she storms, to pound on her daughter's chamber door. The sleepy-eyed serving girl answers, protesting that she hasn't seen the bard since last night and anyway she doesn't have to be up for another hour. Her mother insists on searching her chamber, and does so with great thoroughness. Sebastian is not within, and the serving-girl is in a thouroughly foul mood by the time the search is over.

Hmark thinks to go check the stables. He finds the animals well and unharmed, and the stable-lass not yet on duty. A quick check of the cart shows that all the "exploration" gear Sebastian left in the cart--crowbar, pick, shovels, rope, lanterns, etc.--is still there.

Kiel goes outside to check for tracks. He searches carefully and methodically [yes, you can take 20], and eventually is able to find Sebastian's tracks leading away from the inn at an unhurried pace. Selemar and Lango soon join him, and the wolf is able to pick up the scent from the trail Kiel found. Lango trots along the tracks for about 10 paces, then pauses to look over his shoulder at the humans. He does not speak, of course, but his "you coming, or what?" is plain nonetheless.

[OOC: If you are following the tracks, I need to know who is going and who (if anyone) is staying behind. Also, give me some idea of a marching order. :) ]

When Selemar indicates that there is a trail, she follows the group. Prior to leave, she says to the innkeeper. " If the bard shows up, tell him to wait for us here. I have a surprise for him he will really enjoy". She winks at the woman and smiles.

'Hopefully, the promise of a surprise will keep this galiventing bard to wait here .. assuming he went galliventing on his own ..."

He crinkles his forehead in response to Axara's choice of words.

Selemar calls out that a scent has been found, and everyone (nearly everyone?) joins in the pursuit. Selemar and Kiel are up near the front, following and assisting Lango.

Rollo is close behind the trackers, pots and pans clanking.

Next come Zeph (?) and Axara. Hmark brings up the rear.

[Zeph, I need to know whether you're going along or staying behind.]

Lango leads you in a meandering pattern at first, then in a direct line toward a large tree in the center of the village commons. As you approach the tree, you see a patch of white on its bark. When you get closer, you realize that it is a note, tacked to the tree with a pin.

The note reads:

"Dear friends,

I'm afraid, I have been taken captives by the bandits! They are holding me at sword point forcing me to write this note.

They say for my safe return and that of the book, they want you to bring XXX XXXX 500gp to the Witchspawn stones at midnight! (Note: They originally wanted 200gp, but finding that insulting I argued them up to 500gp! The nerve!)

{The number 200gp and 350gp are scratched out}

Sincerely Sebastian the Bard."

Kiel notices that, although the note mentions bandits, there is only one set of footprints that he can see.

One set of footprints? How odd. Zeph thinks as he does a quick search of the area for any clues.

After that, she looks at the group with a worried face. "I am not the smartest woman on the realm but nothing seems to make sense here. First, there is only one set of tracks. Second, there is not sign of abduction or fight. Why would the bard go willingly? Is he that much of a coward? Third, there is no mention of the most important item he carried. If he has been abducted, are the kidnappers so dense? Finally, the note itself is properly insane."

She pauses at look at each member of the group. "We have a decision to make as a group. Assuming that the bard has been abducted, do we pay the ransom or de we fight to free him? I vote to fight to free him because if we start paying, how can we prevent this to happen again?"

She stops, waiting for the other to reply. "of course, there is still the possibility that Sebastian is under the influence of the book and that is a different and moer dangerous problem. I hope this is not the case."

We follow the tracks, wherever they might lead us and deal with whatever we find. I have a gut feeling the book has influenced our young friend and he's managing to break the curse periodically, like this note for instance. When we find him, which I have no doubt that we will, try our best not to hurt him too much BUT, if he leaves us no choice, and we have to retrieve it by extreme force, remember that 1 life lost is little in comparison to what will be lost if we don't get it back.

Life and Death. Why is it I have no ill feelings toward either. Could it be because I have had to deal with the loss of my birth parents at such an early age? Is this what my teacher has been trying to get me to understand? to overcome and deal with? I will ask him on my next visit.
