Surprise or not the same gnome that led you here pops up from over the edge of the "boat" and sits on the railing, the wolf, Brokefang, is nowhere in sight.
"Yes, it is all metal. Yes, it floats, or at least it should, in theory anyway. No, it doesn't use sails at all. And no, it is not magic. At least not in the sense that you mean young lady."
Vauhwyt's perusal leaves her thinkinh that it will be quite an unwieldy method of water transport.
Hopping up into a standing position atop the railing, the gnome waves his hands indicating his workshop and trying to bow at the same time, nearly falling off the rail, as he continues.
"Welcome to my humble workshop." My name is Tinkers and I do what my name says and my name says what I do. In what way might I be of service to you fine ladies and gentlemen."
Val AC 26, HP 112/ 112 Monday August 18th, 2008 9:35:38 PM
"Well Tinkers," said the rather exotic elf, "we need to go out into that acid lake and find the source of the corruption. Your unique boat is probably the only thing that can give us a chance out there."
Magic Vestment x2 10 hours each, Light Fortification, AC 30, 82/82hp Malgant Monday August 18th, 2008 11:45:45 PM
Going for the long explanation, since the gnome seems to be very curious about it Malgant begins the story. " We were all 'called' for lack of a better term, by a prophecy that says that we should end this blight of acid on this region. We consulted Priscilla, the witch of Blackbird forest, and the information she gathered told us to search the islands out in the lake for the source of the acid. To do that we need to travel freely around the lake. Well, when we got into town and asked around, the priest in the temple said that you had a boat that could weather the acid out there and that we should talk to you about it. So here we are. The acid needs to be cleared up. It saturates the area already and it is spreading. Soon, it is going to start to irritate the Blackbird forest and from what I have heard of the forest when it is not irritated I think getting it angry would be very bad for anyone in, near or around the forest. So to put it in a nut shell we need your help to solve this problem. Will you help us?"

Bart is curious about the boat, wonders how it rides the waves without sails its to heavy to row, but he decide to wait for Tinkers reaction after Vals en Malgant question and explonation.

Lorth dismounts and gives Tobiasz a good pat. "I'll see you tomorrow", he says, then dismisses him. He then walks around the boat and gives it a good once over. I wonder if anything this Tinker makes ever fails, he thinks.

Vauhwyt smiles and takes a close look at the boat while Malgant uses that silver tongue of his. She pokes here and there. Climbs up and takes a look around. She also looks at other neat things in the workshop.
When there is a lull, Vauhwyt asks the gnome if he takes commissions. She has a couple ideas for making things that she thinks he would be great for. "Ever build a better mousetrap?" she asks him, smiling. "I could use one, myself."

She does so and closes her eyes, seriously thinking something over, on very, VERY close inspection, she appears to be shivering.....
Vorelle Tuesday August 19th, 2008 2:06:14 PM
Vorelle continues to stare at the boat, thunderstruck. Metal doesn't float. Everybody knows that. And now, her friends are proposing ride a metal boat into an acid-contaminated lake on the say-so of some gnome? Have they all gone mad?
Magic Vestment x2 10 hours each, Light Fortification, AC 30, 82/82hp Malgant Tuesday August 19th, 2008 4:50:26 PM
Malgant watches and listens to the others as they take in the boat. He hasn't looked at it cloesly because he just doesn't want to know. Gnomes are small. The boat was built by a gnome. Even IF he built it with human sized people in mind as passengers it will still be small. And he is proposing that they ride on it into the middle of a lake of acid and look for what most likely will turn out to be dragons so that they can ask them to turn the lake back into water. He catches Vorelle's expression. As is her norm she seems lost for words, but her look speaks volumes. " Stark raving mad aren't we Vorelle? Crazy as bedbugs more like. But it'll be fine, I'm kinda sure, well sort of, I hope." He smiles and turn his attention back to the gnome, awaiting his response.
DM Kent Tuesday August 19th, 2008 6:27:43 PM
Interesting story. Funny things prophecies. I, myself, have more faith in dreams. I actually got the idea for this boat in a dream. I was even shown exactly how lagre to make it and out of what materials. Then the rest of the dreams sort of kept getting interrupted and a lot of what I built I had to kind of extrapolate from those dream fragments which i remembered. Such a tangle and trouble for something so impossibly heavy. But i was also shown that someone would come for it.
Vauhwyt's snooping is not interupted nor is it really even noticed by Tinkers, or if it is, it is ignored.
What Vauhwyt assumed to be a "cabin" is actually filled with what appears to be a very large kiln-like oven that has pipes running from it to somewhere bellow and two chimney like pipes that go through the roof. The decking of the ship is wooden though it has a very strange finish to it. There are no oar locks, no mast, and no apparent harness system to aid in movement. There are however several benches, a odd looking steerage wheel and three anchor chains complete with anchors 1 aft and 2 to the stern. There is also twin heavy crossbows mounted on the bow deck that appear to be mounted on swivels that turn 90 degrees right and left.
Aztyr heads back outside her head in a spin and Vorelle is contemplating the intelligence of her new group mates.
Malgant looks the boat over ntoing its size and after listening to Tinkers realizes that the gnome, by himself has apparently built this 25 foot wide and nearly 45 foot long metal vessel.

Well Wel Mister Tinkers, I think this boat of yours float, but how does it moves? No sails not with oars, by magic maybe? Do you know how fast it goes? I wish we had this boat when i was part of the Pirates of Jack. It seems you where guided by the same person/spirit/god as we where. We are working at the same task solving the problem in the lake

" Bart brings up a good point," Malgant says to the gnome, more interested now than he was before." What were the dreams that inspired you to make this boat like. Was there a pair of burning eyes in the darkness that gave you the idea, or more than that, almost compelled you to make it? We all had a dream that came over and over again, urging us to the place where we all met and embarked on this quest. It almost sounds as if the same force spoke to you in order to make this boat ready for us to come and find you. "
"How long did this craft take to build?" Malgant looks around and sees no other workers in the shop." If you did this all by yourself I must say that you have either been working on it for some time or are an exceptionally talented and fast worker."

Vauhwyt is delighted with the craft. "This is great!" she calls down to the gnome. "I love it!"
"Take a look from above, Mookie," she tells her familiar. The bird flies up and looks down.
When Mookie is not near, the liontaur casts Light and Blink and then blinks down, through, and across the boat, hoping for a glimpse of the inner workings. She knows she won't hurt it -- if she and a physical object both want to be in the same place at the same time, she's the one to get hurt. She takes a peek as she blinks.
With any luck, she emerges at the bottom next to the gnome (maybe a little bloodied). "Sirr," she says, her accent a little thick in her enthusiasm, "thank you so much! You have done so much for us. How can we repay you? For surely you have earned our thanks."
"And I hope you will consent to take the voyage with us. We could sure use your help with the vessel."

Well now you see that is the funny thing, I felt more like the dreams were sent by the green lady, but I was told that "The Ones would come to use it.
As for how it floats, it has a lot to do with density, bouyancy and displacement. As for how it moves well it has a thing I call a steamygine which powers a central paddle wheel under the stern and moves the boat forward by pushing the water behind it. Or at least that is the theory, I think. As for how fast, I am not really sure, but I expect the more fuel you burn and the hotter the fire, ultimately the faster it will go, though I expect that at some point or other if things get too hot it could just blow up. I mean I am just finishing it up after about 6 months worth of daily work.
As for going with you, I think not. I do NOT do water. other than occasionally bathing and If I have to drinking. Sail on iot or swim? you have got to be insane.
Vauhwyt does a bit of blinking through the ship and seems to be managing farily well avoiding things until she gets to the rear of the boat and things get very cramped as she materialized and is shunted off to the side of a huge paddle wheel twice and then finds her way back up top. 6 points damage

Malgant stifles, for the most part, the laugh that come bubbling to the surface when Appolo offers Tinkers the ' promise of a good time' if he should accompany them. The inventor apparently is not a fan of water, or sailing or of being within arms reach when others test his inventions. Malgant can understand that sentiment. He steps to the door looking for Aztyr. Sticking his head outside he looks around and calls for her. " Aztyr? Are you alright out here? Please come inside, I would like everyone to know how the boat works in case they need to operate it."

The boat I was on was bad enough, I really truely hated being on the water, it was worse when there was no sight of land. Plus, that thing isn't even made of wood, everyone knows that metal sinks. " Ahhh, so you are afraid of the water, I see. But why are you afraid? You are strong, fit, a capable swimmer. You have six strong limbs to propel you through the water. You have your magic, which was able to make someone even as large as me fly through the air. You have the trophies in the totem bag around your neck which signify that you are not afraid to face alone the things that cause other taur fear in groups. Finally you have me and the others here to help you should you fall into the water. All of these things should be able to convince even the deepest, darkest part of your mind that the water is just another vast plain like the one you call home. When you were young and first introduced to that plain you knew little about it and had to travel on it to become familiar with it. Treat the water the same way. Travel on it, learn from the sailors we have among us what it can do and what to watch out for. You say that you are able to return home for a short time each year to visit. How will you do that if you will not ride over the water to your home? Do what Domi does every time HE is afraid. Use that fear to fuel your actions and to fight against the fear and overcome it. Learn, grow and become the leader you were sent out to learn to be." Malgant said this all straight faced and in a calm voice. He understood the fear she felt even if it wasn't the water he feared but the confinement of the boat. It had not been so bad in the past, but the people that captured him and bound him, and put him in that tiny tent before the Swords of Light found and rescued him. They had fueled the fear of confinement in him. They had betrayed his trust when he approached their camp and taken him prisoner. He ruthlessly suppressed that fear now, but once on the boat and confined to it the first few days would be torture. But he would master it, he had to. They needed him, and according to the prophecy the whole area of the Wold needed him. There was no way that he could let them down. By the same token the prophecy needed all of his companions. So he could not allow them to falter in their dedication. When they were weak he needed to be strong for them, when they were afraid he needed to lay their fears to rest. Only as a group would they succeed.

Tinkers looks in abject horror at Apollo as he makes his offer of travelling with then and fighting at least one dragon. "young man I do believe I will pass on your offer all the same."
Now, The boat's steamygine must be kept feuled and at a temperature range marked on the dial near the furnace. If the temperature goes into the range area marked in red, I would get off the boat and as far away from it as you can as quickly as you can, as I expect there will be quite the explosion. The cooler the fire though the slower you will go and if you are not producing smoke and steam your steamygine won't let you move. There is a mixture of wood and black stone coal in the two bins on either side of the furnace. there are also two large shovels for feeding the furnace. The heat obtained from wood and coal burnt in the closed furnace is transferred to the water in a pressurised boiler, ultimately boiling the water and transforming it into saturated steam. Steam in its saturated state is always produced at the temperature of the boiling water, which in turn depends on the steam pressure on the water surface within the boiler. This steam is transferred to the steamygine which uses it to push on pistons to power paddle wheel. At maximum speed you should be able to make about 25-30 knots. If necessary you can probably make 40-45 but then you run into wake and splash issues as well as your are likely to capsize due to the weight.

Ladies, gentlemen! Aren't you forgetting one little issue? The boat is still in my workshop and there is no fuel loaded on yet either. Now mind you the lakeshore is only a few hundred yards out my back door so to speak, but it is all ground, and i don't believe you will want to load fuel prior to moving the boat as that is likely to add a thousand pounds or so to the total weight of the boat. so you will need to load once the boat is near or in the water.

"Oh, that's easy!" says Vauhwyt. She opens the doors -- wait! Are there doors big enough to take out the boat? If not, we'll have to enlarge or make some!
Once there is a clear path for the boat from its current resting place to the shore, Vauhwyt is ready! She makes sure someone is holding a rope for the boat, and everybody else is standing behind the boat, ready to push. She yells, "PUSH!" and reads a scroll, casting Grease on the underside of the boat. If necessary, she reads a total of two or three scrolls.
After the boat is in the water, Vauhwyt turns to Tinker. She says loudly, "Look! I keep trying to thank you and you keep ignoring me! Listen! THANK YOU!" [OOC: See posts from last Fri, Thurs, and Wed.] "HERE! Please take this as a token of thanks!"

Vauhwyt does not use her grease scroll until everyone is pushing. In fact, she casts four or five enlarge persons just before casting the grease. "The bigger we arre, the easier it will be to push!" Her acent reveals her enthusiasm. Of course, Vorelle, who knows the liontaur so well, saw that already.

As the large back doors to the barn are opened you find that there are 8 well rounded logs layed out along the path for use as a roller system though it looks like you are going to have to move the logs in rotation in order to make it to the lake shore, though with the path you are likely to be using, the enlarge/grease spell combination will work just as well.
As Vauhwyt tries to hand off her ring, Tinkers looks up at the large feline. Now little kitty, you go on and keep your little trinket for yourself of the bird if'n you like. Me I will just keep my feet square on the ground. My thanks is several fold already. First off you are clearing out my workroom and you are going to test my creation out. I figure if it works well, I can make this boat out of wood and make a killing with my steamygine, and I will have you all to thank for it. Besides it doesn't feel right taking thanks for something I had to build for the green lady.
Either through manual labor or through spell use and some manual labor, the boat is soon floating in the water and tied up along of all things a wooden dock that does not seem to be being effected very much by the acid of the lake.
The lake shore though is truly littered with dead animals, fish and birds of all types and the smell is horrible. A few little splashes ton handsand bodies do occur and it is very obvious that the acid is there but perhaps not as concentrated as in the river for some reason.
The question is brought up about fuel and Tinkers points you toward a fairly large sized shed that is filled one side with cut wood and the other with what looks to be soft balck rocks. There are several large flat shovels and two small barrows and a wagon.

He then summons some water so that they all can clean up. Most likely they will spend the night here and push off in the morning. Once the boat is safely in the lake, Vorelle takes a moment to study the "coal" stuff. She picks up a chunk to examine it. It does feel like rock, and she wonders how it burns.
With a shrug, she puts the question aside and begins helping to load.

Aztyr will eventually come back to the group from outside alone. She's somewhat embarassed from having missed in helping move the boat from the shop to the water. She will help carry the wood from its stack to the edge of the water, but refuses to go further, yet.....

Enlarged Appolo helps get the boat in the lake then using a shovel and cart helps load the fuel."We want equal ammounts of wood and coal and plenty of it."He tells the others.
DM Kent Wednesday August 27th, 2008 10:33:36 PM
Fuel is loaded and a camp is made in the early evening as the group makes plans to set off in the morning.
The night passes with no interuption and morning almost seems to come to early as people are weary from the manual labor. As it is however everyone wakes refreshed and ready to go.
But then that remains the question. Where will they go. How are they to find the island they need when the four known large islands in the sea tend to change locations almost whenever they seem to want to.
Val AC 26, HP 112/ 112 Wednesday August 27th, 2008 10:59:48 PM
"Maybe we need to take some extra food and water with us. We don't know how long it will take to find who or watever is responsible. Though they may find us before we find them. Once were ready to get underway I'll head down to the fuel room."
Vauhwyt (AC23, HP: 79 of 85) and Mookie (AC18, HP42) Thursday August 28th, 2008 9:06:15 AM
Vauhwyt tells the group how she thinks the party should find the way to go. "Well, this is Blackbird Lake, right? So we should follow the lead of a black bird?"
Mookie caws, "I don't think I like the sound of that!"
Vauhwyt continues, ignoring the bird, "Let Mookie and me fly up high, until we can see an island or four. Mookie will pick the one that seems right to him."
Mookie caws, "How am *I* supposed to know?"
"Don't worry, old chum," says Vauhwyt. "If you aren't sure, trust to fate and do eeny-meenie-miney-mo."
"Oh, that sound like a BRILLIANT plan, Boss," says Mookie, voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Thank you, Mookie," answers Vauhwyt.
Appolo Thursday August 28th, 2008 11:39:54 AM
Appolo smiles at Vauhwyt"Sounds good to me.But perhaps we should ask Tinkers if he has a map of the lake or knows were we can find one. Also if mookie is doing the recon Mookie you need to be on the look nout for dragons and their mions. If the dreams are to be believed that is."
Appolo then turns to Val"Val I think we need you your bow and keen eye up top." Looking at Aztyr'You don't mind going below and running the engine making sure it has fuel do Like I said before you wouldn't be able to see the lake and would have something to keep your mind off that fact that you are on water."
"Lorth you and Malgant can man the ballista's Vorrell you set u a ft i on the rear of the boat and keep an eye out Val you on the Bow I'll help with the shoveling and keep Aztyr company.Vahwyt can do aireil reconnence if she wishes. Also Vorrelle you might want to leave champ here with Tinkers or back at the Inn with the Inn's owner.Just a thought" Appolo the finds Tinkers and asks if he has amap of the lake or knows where we can find one.

"Let me get this straight, you want me in a tiny room, inside a metal coffin, in a place where there's a furnace. How many ways does that just sound like such a bad idea. First, with any of us taurs in there, I doubt there gonna be room for anyone else. Second, hiding the sight of water from me isn't gonna help the fact that I'll know we are in deeper water than my knees. Third, are you sure you want me in a room with this coal stuff and wood, where if I do lose it and start casting spells, it would be a bad idea... Even you should remember just what my favorite spell is. And lastly, wouldn't you rather I be able to cast my fireballs and magic missiles at anything that might attack us, also if we start to sink, I can always just cast fly..." She let her irritation seep into her voice as she let Appolo know exactly what she thought of his brilliant ideas for her.

Vorelle gazes down at the little waves lapping against the hull. If we were on land, she thinks, a trifle resentfully, I could track this---whatever it is.
But, if she can't track per se, she can use those skills to try to figure out which way to go. She spends a moment studying the waves, and the sky, and the patterns of dead animals on the shore, to see if she can figure out which direction the group should head. [Survival 17]
She takes the precaution of putting Champ below, but she is reluctant to be parted from him again--especially since there is no knowing what will happen in town.
She stays up on deck, and keeps her eyes and ears open for trouble. [Spot 23, Listen 24]

" Leave her be, Appolo. Aztyr will be the heroine she has proven to be in the past few days and join us, in her own time. I can use spells to make her forget her fears for a short time, but I would rather that power came to her from within. It has done so before, since she has made it as far as the mainland where we now stand, she was able to summon it for the barge ride to go see Priscilla, she will find it again. Although I do tend to agree with her about her placement on deck. I think her spells would be of more use to us on deck then in the room with the contraption. I....don't like small places. Be that as it may you will need either someone to help Bart with the fuel or someone to take his place from time to time so that he can rest, and I will do that. We should stock up on provisions as Val mentioned. We do not know how long we will be out on the lake, nor what the islands will be like. I can ,make or purify water for us hough, and some food as well."

With roles and placements fairly well settled the groups gets on board, though Aztyr is very obviously not enjoying it very much.
While Bart and Lorth start up the fire in the furnace and begin to load in fuel as it starts, Vorelle takes a look at the sky and water in hopes of aiding in figuring out which way to go. As luck would have it she does get an inkling that they need to move away from shore toward the middle of the lake (sorry, could'nt resist)
Malgant fills several water barrels for the trip and the question is raised about if they need to pack any food stuffs.
Vauhwyt suggests they use Mookie as a guide and scout.
In about 40 minutes the furnace is roaring and smoke is pouring out the stacks. The entire boat seems to be shaking but it seems to be wanting to stay afloat. It almost seems to be quivering in excitement, waiting for the anchors to be weighed and the paddle wheel engaged.
The day is dawning with a rosy tint to the east and the sky is cloudless.

Surprisingly the launch goes smoothly and even after a moment of trepidation as the iron boat heads out into the lake about the floatability of a metal boat even Axtyr is somewhat comforted by the current smooth ride.
Within moments the boat is well away from shore and spewing smoke into the sky as the rear paddle wheel pushes the boat along. In the wheel house bart is quickly learning the ways of steerage and what it will take for the boat to respond. After Bart leaves, below decks Lorth keeps stoking away and is soon drenched with sweat and discovering a few new muscles that didn't know about before, and knows he is going to ache in the morning.
Bart gets strange reading from the wayfinder as he is not to sure of exactly what he is looking for and he gets the feeling that it is constantly moving, slowly but moving.
Val the sailor begins to worry and then suddenly rmembers that they may have just brought bad luck on them all. They just launched their boat without naming it.

Light Fortification, AC 26, 82/82hp Malgant d4=2 ; Wednesday September 3rd, 2008 6:21:14 PM
In the morning, Malgant goes below, briefly and creates enough food and drink for 30 people in the place that appears to be meant for food on the ship. He will use purify food and drink to keep it fresh since it will last more than a day. After Bart uses his device to look for their destination Malgant will attempt to reverse the fatiguing effects of the device( lesser restoration for 2 points of ability damage). Malgant also takes his turn each day at the huge furnace that powers the boat. He will strip off his armor and go below to help feed the fire. He does not look comfortable doing it, in fact he seems to visibly shudder at times while below. But he does the work without complaint, willing to face that which makes him afraid by confining himself in the belly of the ship and working.
DM Kent Wednesday September 3rd, 2008 10:09:15 PM
Once under way it is fairly easy to tell what sort of time will need to be spent working the furnace and an easy schedule can be set up so that no one gets overly burned out, so to speak.
After awhile Vauhwyt and Mookie come back with the information that there appears to an island about two days slightly northwest of where they currently are.
With a quick course adjustment the boat is pointed in the new direction and off and running.
Malgant creates food and water and purifies it so it will last longer and goes to help with the furnace for a while though he is not comfortable doing so.
Vorelle stays at the bow looking out and manning the crossbows, while Val joins her relaxing for a bit at the feel of beeing at sea once again. Though she soon is reminded of the acid as a bit of spray pops up and splashes both she and Vorelle.
Aztyr stays as near to the cneter of the top deck as she can trying to get her sea legs and stay away from the water.
Bart watches and steers.

Light Fortification, AC 26, 82/82hp Malgant Thursday September 4th, 2008 7:28:51 PM
Malgant eyes the sky warily. Having sailed to the mainland from his island home he knows what a storm can do to a ship at sea. his is not so sure what will happen in a lake like this. One thing he does fear though is the possibility that the rain may be rather harmful, as in acidic. If the water that falls is anything like he water in the lake.....
Malgant walks over to where Vauhwyt rests after her flight and mentions to her the possibility that the rain may be acidic and that she may need to use her magic to protect the other members of the crew that need o be on deck to keep the boat afloat. Malgant is painfully aware that he asked Domi for offensive prayers this morning rather than a prayer to reduce damage from the elements, such as acid.
What he truly fears is that some creature that is immune to the acid, such as the frogmen were will use the storm as cover to launch some form of attack on the boat. Though he rests sure in the fact that Domi will provide them with all of the protection that they need to see this prophecy to its conclusion, he knows that Domi is a fighter, and will not necessarily provide that protection without them earning it through combat or other trials.
Appolo Thursday September 4th, 2008 8:27:35 PM
Appolo comes up on deck and looks about,he sees the storm in the distance,"Well folks looks like we're going to get wet."Moving over close to bart"Bart you think we can out run that storm or should we head straight in to it?"
DM Kent Thursday September 4th, 2008 10:38:59 PM
Through an occasional necessary use of the wayfinder and through Mookie's and Vauhwyt's scouting a course is set and maintained for the first and closest island.
A light rain begins to fall just before nightfall but things look like they are going to get heavier and much more windy before they get better. The good news though seems to be that the rain seems to be normal, at least in the fact that it is not potently acidic and doesn't appear to be burning anyone or thing. The boat seems to be working well and the temperature guage stays within the parameters set by Tinkers.
A light dinner is eaten by all in shifts and the decision needs to be made whether to continue sailing through the night or whether to heave to for the dark hours.

Anchoring in the middle of a lake isnt a good idear, you can better have some slight movement to run the waves. The best option is to find an island or go back to shore, we can anchor there. Any sign of an island Vorelle, you can have the wayfinder it is a very very good spyglass and more then that, dont widh anything to see as u use it. DM Kent Monday September 8th, 2008 6:41:07 AM
It seems that the decision is to keep going through the night battling the storm and looking for a place to shelter. The only thing that seems to be available is the island up ahead and that is at least another 3-5 hours ahead at best estimate.
About an hour after nightfall with things chugging along and the rain starting to fall more heavily a loud shriek seems to emanate from the wind and suddenly the storm is upon you in earnest.
In nearly moments the sea went from slightly choppy with occasional gusts to 6-8 foot waves and constant near gale force winds. Visibility is now about 3-5 feet.
Some of the waves are now cresting the sides of the boat and washing along the deak making footing a bit treacherous when taken with the heavy winds. Balance skill check DC 16 to remain on your feet.

The storm begins to really to hit its stride and within moments the rain is coming down in torents almost sideways. The wind also picks up and is gusting well up to 40 miles per hour and along with the waves crashing into and over the boat things look like they are about to get interesting.
Movement above decks is limited to half and visibility is limited to 10 feet. voices can not be heard over the storm from further than 5 feet.
Apollo, Malgant, Val and Bart remaining above decks and working on keeping lookout and steerage, take 4 points acid damage. Aztyr, Vorelle and Vauhwyt each take also take 4 points acid damage as they make their way below.
Soon Lorth is spelled by Vauhwyt and the others are poking their heads in as well, and things below, while drier and warmer, are getting a bit crowded.
Above decks, almost as soon as Apollo mentions that now would be a good time for their amphibian friends to attack, he begins to tie off Malgant's rope when he sees a dark shape poke over the port railing of the boat. Vorelle comes out and up and immediately falls on her rump.
Val gets a few arrows off and connects with her first one but watches the others miss. she calls out a warning but her voice is swallowed by the storm.
Malgant can only see where the foe in front of him is, tries to place it so it catches his in the column and perhaps others that might be in the radius behind him.
Bart is handed a rope from Aztyr who casts a shield spell on herself to try and avoid damage from falling down.
Lorth and Vauhwyt keep stoking the fire and keeping things running oblivious to what is about to happen on deck.
Apollo ties down his rope and pops up behind the wheel house to inform Bart of the happenings.

Left with no options, she pulls her handaxes and concentrates on not getting hit.

[Sorry for not posting!] Any chance of taking an action last round? If so, Vauhwyt casts Energy Resistance (Acid) on herself, chared with Mookie]
Vauhwyt realizes that there is something going on above her. She casts Alter Self on Mookie -- making him into a monkey -- and moves up to the deck. Clinging to his mistress, Mookie retrieves a CLW scroll and then read it after Vauhwyt gets placed. UMD is a 32, so that works, for 9 hp healing.
Note on healing: Vauhwyt started the encounter down 6, then took another 4 acid damage. Then the CLW healed 9, putting her at 84 of 85.
Map note: Not sure how deep I was into the boat, so I'll let Kent place Vauhwyt after 40 feet of movement.
Balance Note: When she gets to the deck, Vauhwyt tries to keep her balance ... She is untrained at Balancing, but her Tumble skill gives her a +2 synergy bonus. So with her +6 Dex bonus, Vauhwyt's untrained Balance roll is a +8. She rolls a 15 and falls down.
Question to Kent: Per the skill description, "You are considered flat-footed while balancing, since you can't move to avoid a blow, and thus you lose your Dexterity bonus to AC (if any)." Is that the case here?

Malgant grunts as the claws and teeth of the frogs tear chunks out of his flesh. He tries to get to Val's side to keep her safe, but the pain from his wounds is too bad. They are in deep, surrounded, wounded, on unsure footing and outnumbered at least two to one. Malgant is bleeding badly from just the initial attacks of the frogs. Had he prayed for the normal prayers he used on land things would be better, he would be larger and more prepared to deal with this threat. But Malgant prayed for ranged spells, expecting to need to fight at range today since he was on board the boat. Malgant prepares to try and act when the deck lurches and throws him down, again. things have not improved Malgant thinks to himself, as he looks up at the two frogs looming over him. Calling on one of the easier prayers of healing so as not to have it disrupted by the storm or attract the attacks of the frogs, Malgant heals himself and then attempts to stand back up to face the frogs head on. OOC If that AoO went off hit the same frog I fried with the flame strike with it. If I can I will fight defensively after I cast my spell

Green Slaad AC 21
I am cutting out some of the modifications as they cancel each other in my mind. As all of you have been on boats and have some skill with rocking boats I am saying that cancels the balancing / flat footed dex penalty, so there are no combat penalties at this time other than vision for ranged attacks.
I will expect balance rolls each round and the Slaad will be making them as well.

He sees the flash and the bang of her arrow and knows she is doing fine by its light. Then he sees the spreading pool of blood at Vorelle's feet. Not good he thinks. Instantly he alters course and dives straight for the Frog attacking her. Vauhwyt is not grappling -- she is just swiping and poking with elbow jabs, spike rakes, etc. The foes are deprived their dex bonuses to AC (and V gets +2 to hit) because Vauhwyt is blinking.] Vauhwyt continues her attacks. Is her foe prone? If so, that's another +4 to hit, right? Rolls below do NOT include the +4.
Armor Spikes: 53% not a miss. Hits AC18 for 6 damage plus 11 sneak attack damage. Armor Spikes (secondary): 41% not a miss. Hits AC26 for 3 damage plus 8 sneak attack damage. Claw: 22% not a miss. Hits AC18 for 3 plus 10 sneak attack damage Claw: 5% a miss!
The two hits vs AC18 will surely hit if the beastie is prone. If not, it still hits if the beastie's dex bonus to AC is +3 or more.
BUT WAIT! What if Vauhwyt loses her own footing! In fact, note that she did not roll for balance LAST round either! Wowsy, I better roll a retroactive balance check for last round and another for this round!
A 24 for last round! Whew! And for this round ... a 13! That's not good! Well, since I already made all those rolls, let's just say that Vauhwyt made her full round of attacks while she herself was prone! How's that? So all her attacks were at -4! Maybe one landed ... maybe all three if the froggie is prone too AND has a Dex of 16 or better!
Let's say Mookie just hangs on and does not act this round.

Malgant bears down and swings once, then again and follows up with a toss of his head to bring his horns into play.[ hit ac 32 for 16 damage +1 fire, ac 22 for 18 damage +5 fire, horns hit ac 26 for 8 damage attacks include the +4 for a prone defender ]. As Malgant tries to end the frog as a threat he keeps an eye on it so that he can continue to keep Vorelle safe [declare Vorelle as interpose target again this round].

The blood sings in Vorelle's ears as pain washes over her again. The shock of the attack leaves her slow and clumsy.
Still, she does her best to defend herself and give Malgant a chance against the creature. [Attacking defensively, using the Aid Another action per Players Handbook page 154. For Aid Another, Vorelle only needs to hit an AC of 10. She hits AC 12, a success. Malgant gets +2 to his AC against #4's next attack. ]
Dimly, she hears Appollo shout for her to get clear, but if she moves, the creature can attack her. [Vorelle will provoke if she stands or attempts to crawl away.] She realizes, however, that that cuts both ways, and she readies her axes in case the fallen creature attempts to stand or move.
[If #4 provokes, Vorelle hits AC 17 (miss)]

Between the attacks of Apollo, Malgant, Vauhwyt, Val and Aztyr the remaining three Green Slaad are chopped into slimy green bits of goo, which luckily get washed overboard with the big wave that nearly swamps the boat, All but Lorth and Bart, take 3 points acid damage, unless otherwise protected.
That last wave nearly tore the wheel from Bart's hands and sent Lorth below slamming into the wall. The storm seems to be reaching its highest intensity with visibility nearly nil. The wind and sounds or surf and rain make verbal communication, except mouth to ear nigh on impossible.
Combat is officially over.
Vorelle [HP 8/86] and Champ Thursday September 18th, 2008 6:34:26 PM
With a monumental effort of will, Vorelle manages not to whimper as she crawls across the deck and down into the hold. She crawls out of the way of the ladder and lies on the floor, enjoying the sensation of not being chewed up by acid, or clawed by giant frogs.
Lorth AC 23 HP 111/111 Thursday September 18th, 2008 8:11:42 PM
Lorth crashes into the wall and tries to roll with it, sprawling himself across the floor. What in Gargul's name are they doing up there? I thought they were experienced sailors? It isn't easy being down in the hull trying to keep this engine fed while everyone else is off doing who knows what... you think someone would come to check on him. Lorth picks himself up and returns to the fuel pile.

Val heads below deck and as soon as she's clear of the acid waves crashing on the deck, the exotic elf begins dropping her things. There's a trail of weapons, armor, and clothing going from the deck towards her quarters. Anybody looking would see her quite naked. Val quickly washes the acid from her skin, caring about removing the burning more than wandering eyes. Once she is acid and blood free does Val go and get her things.

IC Malgant goes to his quarters and strips off his armor. He then wedges himself into the engine room with Lorth and relieves the paladin from fueling the ship. As Lorth rests he also relates the fight that occurred up top and explains that the storm is so heavy that there is no good way to communicate, at least not until Malgant prays in the morning to Domi for a prayer that can ease that problem. He also relates that the frogs are from another plane, since he was able to use a prayer against other planar creatures to send one of the opponents away.

No we cant amchor not in this weather we would lose the anchor and we would be worse we minimize the speed. Cant one of you spellcasters control the wind?
DM Kent Monday September 22nd, 2008 6:40:04 AM
As people are healed and strip off their armor to rest, a debate breaks out about whether or not to try to anchor and ride out the storm. Bart's response to this as appointed captain is to shake it off as too dangerous and decides the two viable options are to head directly into the storm which should eas the cross deck crashing and near rolling over of the boat, or turning ans running with the storm.
Turning into the storm at least has the benefit of still being headed in lake and supposedly toward an island, but who knows how much more this storm metal bucket of a boat can take (It already seems to be steering a bit more sluggishly, possibly due to water accumulating in the hull).
Turning and running with the storm takes the party back whence they came and possibly to the safety of the little bay where they launched, but gets them no closer to their goal.
Now that the fighting has stopped and you can actually listen to the storm, Malgant, Aztyr, Vauhwyt please make Knowledge arcana/spellcraft roll DC 18. If you make the roll then you may Highlight to display spoiler: { You are sure that this storm is magical in nature}

The multiple healing spells close up Vorelle's wounds, and she looks considerably better.
"Th-th-thanks," she murmurs to Malgant, and again to Aztyr.
"Th-thank you, too," she tells Champ, who is assisting their efforts by enthusiastically licking her face.
She scrambles to her feet and looks around to see how she can help.
If there is a way to bail water (or a pump, or something), Vorelle will get started on that. If not, she relieves Lorth at the furnace.

When Vorelle murmurs her thanks Malgant smiles and says " Of course Vorelle, I don't think Champ would le me be if something were to happen to you." When Vorelle comes into the boiler room to take a turn at the feuling Malgant gratefully steps out of the cramped space and heads up to the deck. The rain is still coming down in a torrent and the waves are still crashing, but this is outside and not in the cramped spaces below. As He stands and lets the rain play over his skin he feels something is wrong, magically wrong. [spellcraft 22] Concentrating further he is sure of it, but he calls the other two spellcasters up to get their confirming opinions. "Aztyr, Vauhwyt. Come up here and concentrate on the storm. It doesn't feel natural to me." When they arrive he explains exactly how it doesn't feel right and what he suspects[aid both of their spellcraft checks +2 to each of their checks] Using the rope that Appolo tied off before to the steering room Malgant makes his way there to tell Bart that the storm is not normal, it is in someway magically created or enhanced.

Light Fortification, AC 11, 82/82hp Malgant Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 5:18:11 PM
" I agree with Appolo. I don't think those frogs were a coincidence with this storm. The storm was summoned or augmented to hide their approach and aid in their fight. If they had caught only one or two of us on deck we would not have been able to get help fast enough to survive. God's, Lorth didn't even know we had been attacked when I was below with him. The storm was so loud that he couldn't hear the fight. I say we press on and into the storm. That should aid some of the buffeting and maybe, just maybe hide our whereabouts from whoever sent it for a little while yet."

DM Kent d100=63 ; Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 8:19:58 PM
Looking for someway to help with the water, Vorelle finds a stern hatch that wasn't battened down and was allowing water to fill the lower hull as each wave crashed over the decks. Water right now is nearly mid thigh and just visible on the sides of the hull are several racks of hoses and what look to be pieces to two pumps.
The storm is still rough but no new waves top the boat yet as the decision was made to turn into the storm and continue pushing on. As the course adjustment is made the movement of the boat changes as the boat begins cutting through the smaller waves and trying to crest and ride over the bigger ones and the side to side shifting semms to be lessened considerably.

It seems that even if it is magic, it's source could probably be traced back to where it was used. And that would be us, in this big IRON boat on a lake oozing with Acid. We really arn't hard to miss with that black smoke pouring up into the sky, pointing directly down at us."
