The wagon train proceeds along it's way with little in the way of prodding from Garth. Perhaps it is familiarity with the daily routine...perhaps it is anticipation of finally arriving at Bryn Baraz. Either way, the caravan makes an early start. Beren and Caelnin are sent ahead to scout the way with specific instructions from Garth to locate the arch and to avoid any direct altercation should any of the watchers atop the mesa return.

Jet patrols the line of wagons, his demeanor official and his appearance crisp. Alexi and Mikal cover the other side of the caravan, maintaining a steady vigil of the surroundings. Keela and Fatine continue their feeling out process as the wagons creak and groan under the strain of their loads and the uneven ground.

Towards late afternoon, Beren and Caelnin round a bend in the valley floor and a massive stone arch appears before them, first one leg and then the other. The stone is uneven, smoothed only by wind and rain, and made from the same stone as the steep canyon walls.

Caelnin and Beren make a spot vs DC 12 Highlight to display spoiler: { to notice the tell-tale sign of dust raised by travellers atop the plateau above them}.

Beren and Caelnin find the arch and pause to take in the surroundings. Beren takes note of the dust trail rising from above them and passses along the information to his companion. An even larger dust trail rises from behind them, signalling the progress of the main body of the caravan. Ahead of the two scouts, the steep canyon curves to the north where it appears to divide; one arm leading northeast, and the other in a more westerly direction.

The main body of the caravan makes steady progress behind the scouts and under the ever vigilant protection of their makeshift security force. The wagons are at least a mile behind the scouts and remain unaware of Beren's and Caelnin's observations.

The masked elf returns to the caravan and informs the others of the arch and of the presence of the unknown watchers above them. Should Caelnin advance towards the divide as he awaits Beren's return, he will notice what appears to be a cross, tipped to one side like an 'X' rising from the ground. Should he advance even further Highlight to display spoiler: { Caelnin will discover that the cross is actually the grisly remains of a human, stripped of clothing and skin and strapped to the wooden cross that is imbedded in the soil. Caelnin
Thursday September 11th, 2008 6:14:42 AM

The inquisitive elfish nature had gotten the better of Caelnin as he gets off Huetheria and gets closer to the divide and quickly turns his head at what he sees.

"Never will I want to see that again. I might have to ask someone else about it once they arrive as it might be a sign for something that I do not recognize, but most likely means we are trespassing on another's soil and that is what might come of us. Oh dear... Must tell someone... Yes, I must..."

Caelnin still waiting for Beren to return, tries to find a nice spot to stay slightly hidden for him and Huetheria just in case, as he is alone and in uncharted territory.

Jet
Thursday September 11th, 2008 11:48:09 AM

Jet watches Beren return and rides up to him and Garth immedietly, since he does not see Caelnin with him. He has some small comfort in the fact, the ranger is not wounded or slumping over his saddle, still he has concern and wants to seek an explanation to their parting of ways.

After hearing that, he tells Garth, "It seems to me we would be tresspassing on their lands. It would do better for us to move the train around this area, which may or may not be impossible, or we should send out a crew for parley and perhaps we can pay for our safe passage through their land?"

Fatine [AC 16, HP 14/14] Dogs [AC 20, HP 13/13, 13/13]
Thursday September 11th, 2008 3:47:22 PM

Fatine smiles at Keela. "Don' be worryin' bout ol' Fatine. I can dake a snappin' now an' again." When Keela asks about Fatine's magic, the witch takes a moment to whisper to the crow on her shoulder. After a few squawks, Fatine shushes the bird. "You always worry, silly bird. I tink she be alright." The crow moves its wings (if a bird could be said to shrug, Keela might swear it was actually trying), then takes off, squawking at some farmers as it circles into the air.

Pondering for a few moments, Fatine shrugs at Keela. "Well . . . Mistress didn't really deach me magic. She daught me how to harness powers dat people like me can control." Fatine shakes her head in annoyance. "No, I not sayin' dis right.

"You know what woldsblood be, no? See, in dee realm of shadows, woldsblood flows in rivers an' streams. Dese be pretty powerful currents, see? Here, in dee Wold, I can sense dose rivers and streams, or, well, sense dere power as it manifests in dis world. We witches call dem 'ley lines' - dee lines of power crossing over between dee realms.

"Well, Mistress -" Fatine points to the name tattooed down her forearm, 'Elmindreda' "-she show me how ta feel dose lines. Dere be a nice juicy one right over dere," she points generally off to the east. "Dee closer I be to one, dee stronger my powers get. But dey be tricky. Sometimes dose rivers shift, and I lose dee power completely.

"Your kind - an' I don' mean you, but, you know, mages and all dem book-learned folk - dey don' like how we take our power. Some o' dem . . . dey don' like us bein' around." She glances at her arm again. "Dey took Mistress from me, dose bastards." Her skin almost seems to darken as she scowls angrily, whispering harshly now. "An' when I find dem, I make dem pay dearly wit' dere blood; by dee Crones I will! Deir children will suffer like I suffer . . . ."

Looking over, she seems to see Keela for the first time. "ahem . . . sorry, sister. It be a difficult subject."

Keela
Thursday September 11th, 2008 5:22:48 PM

Keela listens as Fatine explains how her magic works. How different it sounds! Keela is trained in the use of magical flux, which is available just about everywhere. What must it be like to have one's casting power wax and wane with the changing landscape? And what if there are none of these...ley lines...in Bryn Baraz?

Out loud she says, "They took your mistress? But--but that's awful! What could they have been thinking?" She shakes her head. "Master Thaddeus always said that spontaneous casters could be dangerous, because they didn't understand the theory behind the magic they were using. But it sounds to me like you understand yours just fine." She frowns. "And Master Thaddeus would never hurt anybody because they were a spontaneous caster. Just lecture them a lot."

When the word comes back that there may be riders approaching, Keela shelves the discussion of magical theory for the time being. She pulls one of the wands out of her belts. If they're friendly, I'll have wasted a charge, she thinks. Still, I learned last time that once battle starts, I don't have time to protect myself. And I have plenty of charges left.

When they are, to her best reckoning, about 10 minutes from the approaching riders, Keela uses the wand to cast Mage Armor on herself. [Duration 1 hour]

Alexi (AC: 17, HP:28/28) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37)
Thursday September 11th, 2008 7:06:25 PM

Alexi is first worried for Caelnin, then worried for them all. "The idea of avoiding this area is a good one except we don't know how much of this area to avoid. And from the map, these canyons and valleys meander for dozens of miles without really going anywhere."

Looking up at the escarpements he ponders out loud, "If we are going to parley with them and perhaps purchase safe passage, we'll need to get up there," and he points to the ledges. "We aren't going to get them to come down here, that's for sure."

Looking at Garth he asks, "Once we get camped, we'll need some scouts to scour these canyons for a way up to the top. But it may take a day to do that and make contact with them. And we'll need something to barter with. Got any ideas?"

Smiling he says, "Maybe we can offer Fatine to marry their chief's son?"

Garth moves ahead of the caravan and joins Beren, Caelnin, Alexi and Jet once he hears of Caelnin's discovery. The wagon master's first reaction upon seeing the warning with his own eyes is to wretch in the trampled vegetation leading up to the body. Garth insists on cutting the corpse down from the cross. "Can't have the rest o' them seein' that!" he wipes his face with his sleeve, the bitter taste of bile still strong in his mouth. "Beren and Caelnin, search the area! I want to know how many were here! Jet. You and Alexi search the body and then bury it."

Once the wagon train arrives at the divide, Garth orders camp to be made. It is still several hours early but few seem to mind the short day. Garth calls the security forces together to discuss the situation.

"This is the direct path to Bryn Baraz. Any other direction could add weeks of searching and back tracking to find our way. Seems to me we have two choices, push ahead and prepare for the worst, or do as Jet and Alexi suggest, send out a party to parley...see if we can't negotiate."

The wagon master casts his eyes among them looking for suggestions or confirmation. "What's it to be?"

Mikal AC18 HP 23/23

Mikal stays silent for a moment, listening to the deliberation between everyone.

Coming to a conclusion of his own he speaks up. "My vote is to Parley. Maybe we can keep them from attacking us. We've lost too many already, and most of us are weary from the travel."

He gives a silent prayer to Alemi for protection, and to keep them from battle.

"I'm curious about these watcher. I'll go, if all are agreeable. Regardless, it would be wise to scout out the area before advancing any further."

Jet Second Post
Friday September 12th, 2008 6:28:25 PM

The burly fighter priest bows to Fatine as he backs up his words, "I understand your thoughts, the problem is, whoever goes can not face down a group of their warriors and expect to live. So how many of us should we lose to find out if they are hostile? I know at least Anrete has a chance of escape and give the train warning if he's with me. I can hold them off a second or two, to give him that chance. Alexi and Mikal need to stay and help defend, they are better at that then me, I'm all about offense. The arcanists", he points to Keela and Fatine, "will do better for defense as well. Beren is still needed to help guide the train to Bryn Baraz. Let's face it, I'm the most expendable negotiator we have."

He smiles all big and bright, as if he has waited all day to give this speech. He likely thought about it when he first woke up this morning as he stirred the pot of possible solutions they would have.

Alexi (AC: 17, HP:28/28) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37)
Friday September 12th, 2008 10:04:26 PM

Despite the gruesome task, Alexi nearly bursts out laughing at Garth. "Search the body? What'd you expect to find on a clotheless, skinless body? Err... sorry. Didn't mean to be disrespectful Sir. Err... right away. Consider it done. C'mone Jet, let's 'search' the body, we might find some hidden treasure, er, clue to how he died or who killed him." Smirk.

Alexi hadn't thought to bring a spade and was wondering how to break the hard ground but was relieved to see Garth had thought of it, so he and Jet made quick, sweaty work of digging a shallow, as the hard rocky ground allowed, trench for the body. While digging he wondered who it was. Was it one of the bandits that had escaped and headed the wrong way?

Later:
"Hmmm....," Alexi ponders as the others say their piece. "We've go two good points here. Either one could be the right one or the wrong one. From Jet's view, if negotiaions go well, nothing lost. If not, only one or two lost. Now, from Fatine's view, a show of force may prevent hostile action. If they do become hostile, all of us together have a better chance of returning alive than just two alone. I'm a Fist and trained to show strength or get whupped. So I'm for going as a group. But we could take a few precautions."

He takes a deep breath before he adds his ideas. "First, let us raise a flag that shows we are not hostile. A common flag is the white banner. We set that in the middle of camp, tall, large enough to be visible from a distance. The other is Jet and Mikal, who have the ears of the gods, spend the night in prayer asking for some divine guidance to which path may be the most likely to succeed, Jet's or Fatine's. Also, I remember that our battle clerics would wander the battlefield in the middle of a battle and heal the wounded without drawing any fire upon themselves. Perharps you could do the same when meeting these strangers." (OOC: I'm thinking of Augury, but that's a 2nd level spell so Mikal may be the only one to use it. However, Sanctuary is a 1st level spell and could buy you 2 - 3 rounds per casting. Load up on those before you go.)

DM Bob and Carla

Troubled that the obvious way to the settlement of Bryn Baraz seems to be watched, and that the watchers don't seem in a welcoming mood, the wagon master orders the wagons to make camp, and those who discovered the 'warning' ensure it is dealt with before news of the gruesome discovery spreads through the entire caravan.

Jet and Alexi's idea of a discussion under truce to for the mutual arrangement of peaceful terms meets with universal accord. Remembering that there is a group of miners that went ahead of them, Anrete wonders how they fared with the natives, and volunteers to scout out the situation. Jet volunteers to go with the barbarian, assuming it might be his last mission. Fatine reminds the group that separating the party in the past hasn't been successful, and suggests the group show a united if diverse front. The witch reveals her curiosity about the people who seem to inhabit the land, previously thought uninhabited. Praying to Alemi that no altercations be involved, Mikal supports the idea of negotiation, as do Beren and Caelnen. Keela admits that the right thing to do is act cordially.

While the fighter's cut down the body, Anrete and Caelnen have a look around. The remains are that of a tall, heavy set male--with sloping forehead and jutting jaw. Very likely a half-orc. Alexi speculates that it might be an escaping bandit who lost his way. While the body is buried, further explorations by the scouts reveal 3, possibly 4 distinct sets of footprints belonging to medium sized humanoid creatures. The ground is firm, but DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: { there are sufficient traces to indicate the direction the individuals' took. Furthermore, they appear to be on foot.}

Not sure if anyone caught his meaning, he tries to be more to the point. "If they get the impression we are weak, they won't have any reason to bargain with us for our passage. They'll feel they can just take what they want. So we humble admit we are trespassing. have something valuable to offer them for our safe passage, but show them we are well capable of defending ourselves."

Once the dogs come running, Fatine prepares a small meal for them and lets them sate themselves. While they eat, she searches the sky for her crow Col. After a few minutes of fruitless searching and whistling, the bird finally alights on a nearby tree branch. Fatine hurries to the bird and whispers quietly to it.

Keela is happily reunited with her family, and when the farmers return they bring with them a string of seven horses and single mule. The mule has the remnants of a daisy chain necklace wrapped about her neck.

What's a 'daisy chain necklace', and do we recognize the mule? Only one I know is Vilria.

I've not received a reply yet on the loot Beren got from the sorceress. Please update us on this info.

Caelnen and Beren feel confident that they can track the natives who left the gruesome warning for the caravan. The direction of the trail is marked by the elves, before they head off to prepare for the mission.

Jet suggests the party round up any horses collected from the bandits that had previously attacked the caravan, along with any of those the group had recovered from Lollena's kidnappers. Alexi endorses the idea, but is reluctant to part with all the spare horses. Some of the animals have been integrated into the caravan, claimed by farmers or other settlers. In the time allotted, some 10 animals are identified as available for barter. Both men identify additional gifts from their personal belongings.

Her heart aflutter, Keela is excited at the prospect of meeting new people, though concerned she may bring little to the delegation.

The herbalist is concerned about loosing his assistant, but expresses confidence in Fatine's ability to take care of herself. He gives the witch a pouch with some packets of herbs and spices, as well as 4 vials*, "to use as the need arises."

Anrete enquires about what the group's strategy will be.

The group meets with Garth at the appointed time. The wagon master goes over the facts as he knows them, confirming with the group that he will give them 3 days head start to locate the natives and learn if they will allow safe passage of the wagon train through to Bryn Baraz. Whether the group returns or not, the caravan will continue the march north when the 3 days are up. A crude map with only the barest of details is handed over. "Best that could be done on short notice," Garth admits. "If some'at happens," he adds, "make yer way to the settlement." Before they leave, Lollena hands Alexi a roll of soft white cloth. The fighter realizes the banner isn't some farmer's wife's rough stuff, but rather fine white silk. All choked up, he tries to stammer that it was unecessary to make such a sacrifice. It is obvious to the fighter that the seamstress made the sacrifice of diamonds for their success.

"I'll bear this with honor and pray that I can return it safely," is all he manages to say, a tear starting to swell in his eye. In the world of knights, when a lady gives a knight a personal token, such as an embroidered handkerchief (or part of a weeding dress), the knight becomes her champion. The party follows the tracks of the mysterious watchers along the valley bottom. Beren leads the way and easily finds the small trail leading through the rock formation. Jet follows, the banner flying from his lance. The path begins climbing, turning back on itself several times as it ascends the valley wall. The way is steep and narrow, and not well suited to riding, but the horses might be led on foot...Despite their vigilance, the adventurers see nothing of note as they climb. At what Beren assumes to be the halfway point, the trail offers a near perfect view of the valley below. The wagontrain can be seen in the distance, waiting for the prescribed time of departure.

The top of the Mesa is still approximately 50' above, but the narrow winding trail that leads there is at least 200' or more in length and must be negotiated carefully, especially when leading a pack of horses.

Alexi suggests, for the purpose of the trail, each member take the lead rope of a spare horse with the last two in line an extra horse each (that should be 10 horses). This way, only the last two will be dealing with more than two horses, and if one of them should fall, you can just let go of the lead rope.

Once on the plateau, this order can be re-arranged to free up the hands of the fighters.

Mikal watches from the safety of the wagon train, as the group strikes out. "You sure you don't want to go with your mates?" the wagon master enquires. Garth watches as the reconnaissance party strikes out in search of the natives they believe inhabit the uncharted lands. Seven mounted adventurers, with 10 gift horses and a few other items intended for the people they hope to meet, and possibly negotiate safe passage across the land.

As the trackers lead the group from the valley floor along the trail moving up through the rock formations, travelling by horseback becomes trickier though not entirely impossible. No one will actually be required to climb, but in general the consensus it that it would be better to dismount than to try to negotiate the narrow path from horseback. Beren decides to keep his seat. Caelnen is one of the first to slip from the back ot his horse, to lead his new grey mare along the path. Anrete suggests the possibility of leaving the horses behind, but that is not necessary. Alexi asks that each member of the party take responsibility for one of the extra horses the group is taking with them, with the extra horses nearer the end.

Under the guidance of Jet, the party starts to space out single file with an adventurer out front leading his own horse, and another with a long line attached to its bridle, then a second adventurer, two horses, a third adventurer and two horses, and so on. Though it isn't without risk, there is the opportunity to jockey around until all are satisfied with their position in the line. Trackers and scouts out front, Keela and Fatine somewhere near the middle, and the fighter's where they think they will best serve their companions.

Anrete and Beren are able to follow the trail, and the masked ranger is able to confirm that the tracks were likely made early in the day, rather than recently. Those keeping a lookout don't see anything untoward. There certainly aren't any watchers. The huffing and puffing of the party and their mounts, along with the creaking of leather, and the shuffle of hooves and feet along the trail are the only sounds. Col hasn't returned, but then the raven hasn't been gone all that long.

The party moves single file along the narrow path, gradually ascending the hilly terrain above the valley. The circled wagons can still be seen in the rocky valley below, the settlers like ants moving about as they go about the business of making camp. Occasionally a rock is dislodged, and goes bouncing down the hillside; however the path is not so narrow that careful treading by man and beast ensure a measure of safety for all.

All eyes are trained on the path and the environs, as quietly the group ascends the steep slope. The quiet calmness of the adventurers has the effect of keeping the beasts at ease, and none of the horses show any anxiety. Even Fatine's dogs tread quietly along the line, foregoing any explorations to remain close to their mistress.

The sun beats down from above, for there are no trees, only the narrow dusty path bordered by scrubby, hardy bushes, and tufts of grass interspersed with light rubble. The hike and the heat begin to take their toll. (Fortitude Check DC 15, or else take 2 pts. nonlethal damage).

Beren finds no signs of ambush or trap, and though the tracks seem to fade from view momentarily, there really is no other way for anyone to travel than along the path. On gaining the top, the adventurers see the valley below and to the west, bordered by a hillside similar to the one the party just climbed. The valley stretches north and south, with the top a kind of flat plain stretching out along the same direction. Watchers could ride along the edge, keeping a lookout for anyone or anything coming up the valley. To the east stretches a flat plain of shrubby bushes and grasses punctuated by more rubble and some larger stones or rocks. Glad to be finished their climb out of the valley, the group surveys the scene. They are on a plateau of sorts, with a path heading north and south, following the direction of the valley. The group demonstrates persistence in the face of adversity, however for some it is at a cost, though a small one. Beren, Alexi, and Fatine find the heat a bit of a strain. (Mikal-still need a Fortitude roll vs 15)

The path taken by those who left the gory talisman is studied, and the combined observations confirm that though the initial group had been on foot when in the valley, they were now on horseback, and headed north. Having determined that no effort was made to hide their tracks, it is speculated that those who made them appear to have no fear of the caravan or the settlers.

Anrete sets a good example in keeping hydrated, while Keela worries about the actual number of those the party are tracking.

Fatine searches the clear sky worried about Col, for the bird is nowhere to be seen. But then, the only real vantage point is from the sky, there being only shrubs and tufts of grass amongst the rubble.

The sun bears down on the dry land, causing the air to shimmer. Here and there a puff of wind raises a little whirl of dust dust that dances lightly for a space, and then dies out. Jet is unable to see past the shimmering effect, however Caelnin, Beren, and Mikal spot a small funnel shaped cloud north, north west. It doesn't die out like the others and is bearing down almost directly on the group! There is almost no time to react to the small whirlwind as it whips up dust, sand, and other debris.

I tried to explain in my DM post, but I will be frank and admit that this is a tricky (but fun!) one based on DMG Wind Effects and MM Elementals.

Try to visualize the dust devil...a mini 'twister' as it weaves towards you. On the periphery small bits of debris are picked up and spun about, whereas the core of the event is the strength of the thing. Fast reflexes (DC 15 or better) would allow you to dodge the main event, but still get pelted by the periphery debris (the non-lethal dmg.). Even closing your eyes, or averting you head (a DC 12, 13, or 14) would allow you some respite from the periphery activity (non-lethal), though you wouldn't be able to avoid the 'slam' of the core (the regular damage). Of course, if you were small and light, you could get carried away...

'Between the heat and the dust devils, we might not need to worry about the natives'-Jet, The Uncharted Lands

The party is learning some newfound respect for this uncharted land they are venturing into. There are other hazards in the Wold, they learn, than those posed by enemies from the higher races.

As the small whirlwind whips up dust and debris, some dodge out of the way, while others are unable to avoid the natural effect.

Careful manoeuvring allows Beren and Keela to avoid all but a light pelting from dry twigs, leaves, and grit as the edge of the whirlwind catches them. (Reflex of 26 and 16 mean they beat all but half non-lethal dmg.) Alexi closes his eyes, while Mikal andJet manage to snap their visors down therby protecting eyes and mouths, but any bare skin feels the sting of debris before the fighters and the cleric are knocked to the ground (Reflex of 12 and13 means half dmg. from flying debris, but 3 pts dmg. from being knocked to the ground). Though he spotted the event in time to warn the others, Caelnen's concern for his mount slows his reaction, and he takes the full brunt of the natural event and is tossed to the ground. (Reflex 8, 6 pts non-lethal and 3 points regular damage.)

Fatine reaches for her dogs for extra support as the mini-twister bears down on her. All three feel the sting of flying grit. Averting their gazes, and bracing themselves with all four feet, Shadow and Cloud resist the storm, however their mistress is not so fortunate as she is swept off her feet by the dust devil. (Reflex of 22 and 25 mean the dogs beat all but 3 pts. non lethal. Fatine's Reflex of 13 means half dmg. from flying debris, but 3 pts dmg. from being knocked to the ground.)

(OOC: Still need Mikal's Fort Save, and Anrete's Reflex Save)

Just as suddenly as it appeared, the whirlwind collapses into nothingness, leaving a little pile of leaves, broken twigs, and small pebbles. Jet is pretty sure the thing was a natural phenomena, a common enough manifestation in dry regions as it were, and Beren finds no hidden enemy.

Though Fatine is anxious to be on the way, Jet suggests a brief respite in order to check on how his comrades are handling the trip. Keela uses the opportunity to fix her hair.

Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 9:57:59 PM

OOC: ok, if I interpret it correctly, this is how I see the dust devil. Alexi has Endurance that gives him a +4 against non-lethal dmg. He rolls a 9 for his Ref save. This means that for the Non-lethal damage part, he makes it, taking 3pts of non-lethal dmg. But for the other part, he fails and falls to the ground taking 3 pts of real damage. Does that make any sense?

Amending previous post with new post:
Alexi saw the dust devil coming but instead of ducking, he took hold of several of the spare horses reins to keep them from bolting away. Unable to avoid the dust whirlwind, he's knocked down, partly by the wind, partly by the horses jostling, but keeps his grip on the reins.

Alexi picks himself up from the dust sputtering a bit, and tries to re-orient himself. The sweat he generated was now mud and he felt sticky all over. He takes a couple more swallows of water to wash the dust down.

"Glad that 'thing' didn't hit us on the cliff side," is all he's in the mood to say.

He takes his helmet off and shakes his head and empties some dirt from it. He then helps Jet water the horses and check the saddles.

When jet offers some healing, Alexi gratiously declines. "I'm fine for now, but I hope we don't get any more of these."

OOC: Caelnin can use the 3hps. Also, there was no mention of the horses having to make a save, but I figured that it was because they are large and four-legged, thus heavier and more stable.

Thanks, Josh, for filling in while we were gone....

Recap...:

The valley had provided some degree of protection from the more severe elements of nature in this new land. Now, having ventured beyond the shelter provided by the steep walls, the group is exposed to some of the natural hazards of the rgion.

In order to follow the tracks made by the natives who left a grizzly warning in an attempt to scare the settlers, the party climbs a narrow and steep path. The higher they climb, the hotter it gets, until they emerge onto a dry, rocky, sun-baked plateau where only scrubby shrubs, and dry grasses have found purchase. While the party examines the tracks made by the natives, who appear to now be on horseback, they experience aweather effect or 'dust devil'.

Having experienced what nature can dole out, the party decides to follow the tracks to the north. Anxious that all are at their fighting best, Jet tends to the cuts and bruises of those slightly wounded by nature's little devil.

As the group plods north along the path made by those who went before them, the heat makes the air shimmer, and there are occasional whirls of dust, but no further challenges for the party. Many miles are covered, and the caravan is far behind, safely camped in the valley below. The sun starts to descend, sinking slowly behind the purple mountains. The only shadows are those of scrubby shrubs and the occaisional large rock or bolder. There really isn't anything to hide behind. However, the core branches of some of the bushes might yeild enough fuel for a camp fire.

....and adjustment (rewind)

After a time, the dim light makes visibility a bit of a challenge. If the group conitnues, it will eventually beome dark and there will be the chance of getting lost in the dark.

With maybe 1 hour before it will be too dark to see without a light, Beren locates a spot where a small cluster of rocks might provide a little shelter for a camp site. Jet isn't quite ready to settle in for the night, but his thoughts turn to the keg of ale he is transporting. Anrete volunteers to cook up a meal, while Keela volunteers to do whatever needs doing. Fatine looks for the raven, absent for so very long, and is able to spot a dark shape flying in swooping circles against the deepening sky. Highlight to display spoiler: {(Fatine shares a sense of excitement through the empathic link with the small magical beast. The creature is definitely excited, in a positive way, about something. The witch also senses that Col is torn between staying where he is, and returning to his mistress!)}

Beren's acute elvish ears pick up a deep reverberating sound. He alerts his companions and points northward, in the direction of the drumming, speculating that they might be expected. (Spot vs DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: Highlight to display spoiler: { to see a light or lights maybe a mile ahead.)}

With about 1 hour before it will be too dark to see without a source of light, does the party make camp or press on?

"Let's keep a special vigilant eye on the horses. These people probably highly value horses. And I don't want to walk back."

Jet listens as each member of the party voices their opinion on whether to proceed into the night or make camp. Not too keen on stumbling around in the dark, Keela likes the idea of making camp. Though he spotted what appear to be campfires up ahead, Alexi is of the opinion that it would be better manners to call on the strangers during the day. Anrete agrees, but suggests that maybe they might learn something from a little 'sneak and peek'. Beren endorses the idea of making camp, but negates the idea of a night time mission.

Only Fatine grumbles at missing the party, but she is outnumbered, unless you count Col. The raven returns to his mistress, though, the witch can sense ambivalence from the bird. Fatine notices Highlight to display spoiler: { the bird shows no interest in any food being prepared at the camp site.}.

Camp is made, and only the smallest of fires created. The horses are hobbled, with the plain beasts leashed loosely together and left to graze on the tufts of early grass that dot the area. Those that belong to the party members get a little extra attention from their riders. Inspired, Anrete concocts a tasty meal for his companions, while the order of the watches is settled. Jet nixes the idea of any late night reconnaissance, and makes sure the party stays together. Alexi and Beren ensure the horses in particular are well guarded.

In the morning the last watch points out a spot to the north, where the path seems to swerve farther from the side of the valley, and where the grasses grow a little taller and the shrubs reach the height of a man. A small rise in the land, a step up to another plateau, offers a bit of shelter to a small grouping of dome like structures.

DM Bob and Carla
Tuesday September 30th, 2008 10:44:42 PM

The party prepares itself for negotiations or confrontation. Horses are saddled, animals fed, flags of truce raised, and offerings of ale readied. There are no overt signs of any preparations being made in the settlement to the north.

The grasses and shrubs that grow in the dry soil move gently in the light breeze of the early morning. As the adventurers venture north, the odd murmer of voices drifts towards them from the camp, but still there are no signs that their presence atop the mesa has been noticed.

The party is now within a quarter mile of the encampment. The grasses are higher and thicker, brushing the bellies of the horses as they pass. The structures that appeared as domes from a distance are now recognizable as roughly circular tents with vertical walls and a slightly domed top. A few figures can be seen going about what appear to be routine chores. A lone figure with white flowing hair rises and looks southward towards the adventurers.

The party moves a little closer to the encampment and get a better view of things. The tent-like structures, maybe half a dozen, are large, and well established as are some of the other fixtures of the encampment, giving it a semi-permanent appearance. Regardless, it appears to have been a recently established settlement.

Anrete inclines his head in an attempt to single out the white haired man looking southward in the direction of the party, and reminds his companions to avoid appearing hostile.

Drawing attention to the group's white flag, Beren none the less leaves nothing to chance, keeping two arrows at hand.

Keela attempts a gesture of respect, while Fatine and Caelnin pull up with the rest of the party.

Jet separates himself from the group, with Alexi in attendance. The two fighters ride bravely forward. The fighter/cleric waves an open palm, showing he bears to weapon, while the white silk banner flies from the Fist's lance.

Activity at the camp ceases, as those going about routine chores stop and watch the progress of the foremost two approaching the seemingly unguarded entrance of the encampment. The visible population appears mostly young adults, and mostly male. The white haired male stands out as somewhat aged, and a young female stands close to him. A handful of youngsters scatter, two seeking refuge behind another female tending a cooking fire. The population as a whole are revealed to have brown skin, and long hair that ranges from black to dark brown, with the exception of the elder. Slightly pointed ears, and subtly almond shaped eyes give the appearance of elven blood, though the height and weight reveal the racial traits of humans. The dress is simple animal skin, although there is evidence of woven items of apparel as well.

As the foremost riders draw closer, they see the elder's face is turned up to feel the sun and wind, but it is unclear if he is looking at Jet and Alexi or the group, or at something else.

Mikal, Beren and Caelnin are unable to see anything in the grasses on either side of the party, but they are pretty sure they hear low whispering. The words are hard to make out at first, but as their ears become more attuned to the sounds, the elves make out that the speakers are using a dialect of the elfish language that is rarely heard spoken, and then, only by ancient magikers when casting the old magics. The party becomes aware that their movements are being watched by natives of the area hiding in the tall grass. Though they can not be seen, they can be heard.

Jet and Alexi respond to the young male who has stopped their progress. Not fully understanding what he is saying, they address him plainly in the common language with a message of peace. Sensing he might be of some help to his companions, Caelnin rides forward and addresses the man in elfish, suggesting a private meeting for the group.

Beren carefully brushes his cloak back, and stores his arrows, while Keela and Anrete makes no movement, but study the strangers.

The white haired elder joins the dark haired man at the entrance of the encampment, while the pretty woman stays behind.

In heavily accented Common the dark haired man volunteers, "I am Muata, son of Dasan. My people have low speech. It was the way of the Yaaraerea* to know all manner of tongues, and pass them down to the people." Muata studies the group, then placing his fingers to his mouth; he makes a piercing whistle sound. A dozen warriors step from the grasses to flank the mounted group and their horses. "My men will take the animals. You will enter the camp on foot. We will speak of the Aeir Spangaerea** and this place you call Bryn Baraz."

The party get the general feeling that most of the individuals are indifferent to their presence, or maybe a little curious. There is however a small current of unfriendliness and even hostility amongst the group as a whole.

They should be careful." Then to the warrior receiving the reins he says, "This is Lobo. It means 'Wolf' in some languages'. Treat him well, he'll treat you well."

Alexi then awaits Jet's lead and follows him.

"You must promise me to take care of Huetheria. A good friend to me, and should be nice to you." He says to the warriors as he catches up to the group.

Taking his first steps into an elfish community in a long time, Caelnin feels somewhat nervous. After the fight with his father, he has never felt comfortable in a community filled with elves.

He looks over his shoulder to see a father and his son staring at the group of adventurers that have walked into the camp both holding a bow and Caelnin smiles for a moment then quickly turns away. His memories of his father come flooding back and he just keeps on walking, trying to keep those memories from coming. What's in the past is past and never will come back.

The group dismounts under the watchful eyes of the warriors, and the growing number of curious folks from the encampment who crowd behind the white haired elder, and Dasan. As the horses are lead away, Dasan announces, "the animals will be cared for, and returned when you have the need."

The number of warriors is reduced, as several are required to deal with the horses. Those that remain outnumber the party, but not by many. Careful observation reveals the company is mostly male; however there are a few females amongst the group. They, along with their leader, are all young adults, not much older than the members of the party.

As Jet shoulders his barrel, and Alexi makes mention of gifts the remaining warriors form around the visitors. Dasan leads the party across the threshold of the encampment as the elder stands passively by, observing each member of the group. No word is said about the party's weapons or armour, and no one blinks an eye when Fatine's dogs remain at her side. Col turns his head and averts eye contact with his mistress, but as the group troops by the corner of the old man's lips curl up for but a moment as he rasps out a welcome, "nae saian lumme mellon,*" followed by an silent wheeze that could be a laugh.

The encampment is made up of a half dozen dome-like structures. Each appears to have a circular wooden frame carrying a cover of woven fabrics and hide. The frame consists of one or more lattice wall-sections, a door-frame, roof poles and a crown lashed together with leather strips. The structure is kept under compression by the weight of the covers.

Dasan leads the group across the bare central space, and towards what appears to be the largest yurt-like structure. The external covering is decorated with images, symbols, and what appears to be lettering.

He attempts to sense the motives of the others also, on if this is a trap or if they plan on taking all the horses as their own, but rather then dwell on it, he looks to Fatine and bows his head as if to say, :You're on".

He gestures to Alexi to keep the white flag as jet removes the banner from the spear and places the weapon with the others in his saddle built for battle. He once again wraps it around his neck allowing it to hang down his back.

He does not sit unless offered one and is sure to allow the elder and spokesperson to seat themselves first, hoping no action is an insult. Looking around, he watches for any other macabre signs of trouble, like skinless orc heads or other trophies that may have been taken from intelligent opponents.

He tries to stay observant, but with the new surroundings, and trying to follow all the different conversations, he is slightly distracted.

Steeling his nerves at the proximity of the warriors, Alexi carries the white flag to the main tent, which appears to be a shaman's tent. 'Perhaps Fatine recognizes these symbols?' he wonders. He also wonders what the relationship is between the white-haired man and this Dasan. More likely there is the spiritual leader and the military leader. But which one holds more sway?

When they go into the dwelling, Alexi places his lance with the white flag outside, leaning against the side. He waits to be shown where to sit. During this time, he tries to study the people, for what he's seen, these aren't the type to do the kind of thing done to the person they found tied and skinned. Perhaps he had done them harm? Or perhaps their outward appearance is deceiving?

Muata, Son of Dasan, opens a flap of hide that forms the doorway into the great tent. "You may enter, but you must leave your weapons outside", he points to three wooden poles arranged between two rocks. There are a number of spears and a bow already leaning against the makeshift rack. "Your weapons will be safe here, just as you will be safe within these walls, and they will be returned to you when you leave." The warrior's intent appears genuine to Alexi and Jet, and neither Beren nor Caelnin or Keela see anything threatening in the actions of any of the others.

Assuming the party agrees to leave their weapons outside, Muata bids them enter and allows the flap to close behind them. He waves his arm pointing to a series of braided grass mats arranged in a semicircle on the ground. "Sit" he commands them in a soft tone. "Istaqa will speak with you in a moment"

The interior of the tent is dimly lit by a vent in the roof directly above a central fire pit which is lined with rocks the size of large potatoes. The mats are arranged around one side of the fire pit, opposite a single large mat comprised of piled furs. A trace of wood smoke lingers in the air as the last embers of a fire fade in the pit.

Within a few moments Muata re-enters, followed by the white-haired elder and a line of warriors who take their places along the outer edge of the tent. Muata beckons his warriors to take their seats and so they do, curved hunting blades hanging at their sides. "This is Istaqa and he will speak for our people."

Muata takes a seat by the side of the pile of furs. The one called Istaqa steps forward, his white hair flowing over his shoulders and down his back. He carries a wooden staff and leans on it for support. The upper part of the staff is adorned with braided leather and a small leather bag hangs from this handle by a necklace of what appear to be teeth along with a single raven's feather. Istaqa's speech is halting as he struggles with the common tongue and he refers to Muata several times for the translation of a word or phrase.

"I have for many months seen your coming in my dreams and so we have come to this place where the grasses bend. All those who come into our camp freely will leave so, for this is our way. We will talk, and you will be fed, and when the sun rises you will be free to leave here as you came. He smiles reassuringly at his guests. "yes, even you will have your belly filled Thala", he opens his palm to reveal a small strip of dried venison and with a few short clicks calls Fatine's bird to his hand .

"We are the Ahote, the guardians of this land. We alone have survived the great destruction and we alone have been..., he struggles for the correct word before continuing, "have been chosen by Catori to protect this land. Why do you come here and disturb the spirit mother?" Istaqa's voice maintains a soft, even timbre as he asks his question of the group.

Jet can see, Fatine is to pissed off at the bird and perhaps the person that grew friendly with the bird for her to be doing any talking, so he will throw fate to the wind. Jet removes his weapon and his armor, so as to give the impression he has nothing to fear from these people, especially since his armor spikes are technically weapons. He sits in the central seat of where they were shown and begins prayers to each of the gods of his choice. Perhaps, they will recognize some semblance to their own religion and share a common belief.

As the natives enter and say their peace, it is Jet that will pick up.

"First, please allow us to honor you with peace offerings, in the hope that any trespass that may have occurred will be compensated. Those animals we did not ride ourselves, but tethered behind our own mounts, are now yours. As well, I have brought with me something we call spirits, but not the type from our ancestors, but the drink is used to allow one to be more joyous and happy, be warned though, to much of this drink can lead to a sickness or death. It is my hope we may share in this drink when the talk of that which is serious is over."

"As to a disturbance to the spirit mother, we travel with one that is a true child of the earth mother and he has spoke nothing of either being upset with us. You must be forth coming in how we have caused a disturbance."

"We are settlers heading to a place you are aware of. We call it Bryn Baraz and it is there, that we wish to thrive and live. Yes, we will dig in the earth and live off the land, just as the badger, bear and rabbit does. We will take what we need in order to do so and we have with us those that will govern our progress, so that we will not take more then what the earth mother can provide."

"We saw markings of death at the entrance to the valley we must enter. We took this as a warning from some tribe and it is them that left that marking of death that we seek, to discuss a safe passage to our destination."

"Feel a little lighter already," he mutters as he goes in.

He takes a matt next to Jet and waits for what is to come next. When Istaqa comes in, he gets up and bows to him, only sitting again when Istaqa has seated himself. He listens to all being said, nodding in agreement at Jet's words.

Back to Istaqa, "And if'n I might ask, how d'you know my Spirit Friend? If you got dee urge to keep him, know dat he bound to me spirit an' soul. Until I release him, dat be."

Gesturing with his open hands, Anrete grins as he removes the last of his weapons. However, the blacken armor spikes, and the wicked blades protruding from his armored left arm left little doubts that the former pit fighter is still deadly.

Anrete remains silent and allows Jet to be the spokeman for the party, while observing their host intently.

Istaqa laughs out loud at Fatine's line of inquiry. The laugh is hearty and deep, and belies his aged appearance. "'Thala' is our name for all birds of his kind, the black bird that feeds on carrion. This one's hunger was stronger than most." The elder spokesman clicks his tongue and sends the bird back to its mistress. "I have seen the spirit in his eyes",Istaqa explains, "but he is still a bird."

Istaqa listens patiently as Jet explains the presence of the caravan, however, the warriors that line the inside wall of the tent are less controlled. There is much muttering and one of the warriors, steps forward. He is taller than most, his body hardened by life in an unforgiving environment. Several scars cross his chest and shoulder in parallel as if mauled by a large animal. The edges of the scars are still red and angry. He speaks in quick, angry bursts, and in his native language. He corrects himself part way through. "They say they will live here, and take from the land, but this is forbidden! Only the Ahote may live here and only the Ahote may take from the land! This has been our way for generations. The great destruction rid this land of the greed of dwarves and men, we cannot let them return! We care not for your horses, nor your drink. You are not welcome here...Go!" His words are greeted with enthusiasm from many of the Ahote warriors, but Itaqa raises his arms, commanding their silence.

"Tocho speaks the truth" Istaqa tries to reassert control over the gathering. "It is true that the Ahote alone were chosen to survive and protect these places, and that no others have been allowed these many generations... but I have seen things in the shadows, and Catori has spoken to me. She has shown me this Pauwau* and the beasts that follow her...and a man-bear who also speaks with the animals. The dreams are not clear, for there are great troubles ahead and these Qochata** are a part of it, but they are not the cause, and I believe they have a part to play, a part that only Catori knows. We must ask the spirit mother!"

The warrior named Tocho and several others gather around the old spokesman, arguing their cases and listening to Istaqa's counsel.

Muata speaks directly to Jet and the rest of the party. "If you seek those that left the sign in the canyons, then you have found us. We captured this Cha'kwaina*^ after he killed one of our scouts. We believed him to be one of you for he followed your wagons." Muata spits in the fire. "He had no honour; his screams woke the camp and scared away the coyotes".

Jet s body also, is hardened by life. he has jagged marks from glass bottle being dragged across his sinewy muscles, he scowls at any that approach him in anger and stands ready to defend his comrades and himself.

"All men have the right to live! Who dares forbid me the life I wish to live? By the powers of all the good gods I thrive in order to protect my friends and family. It is the choice of the Ahote if you want to be considered a part of our life. In the face of many, it is easy to perish, but with many standing side by side, there is no man or beast that can defeat those that call each other friends.

You speak of generations, but what has it brought you? One after another, hating people other then your selves. You say you are warriors, but only cowards are not willing to change in the hopes that their children will have a better life then their ancestors.

"The earth mother protects herself and there is no man or beast that can cause her harm, just as the creature that marks your body, may have caused you harm, you lived and it has healed. Not in the way you would have liked, but it is because of that battle you are stronger."

"Do not talk to us about courage and bravery when your own people are afraid of your past and your future. The people I am with have left everything we knew in order to find something better or die trying, when was the last time your people has tried that?"

Jet is really upset right now. His large muscles bulge under his darkened skin and he is ready for someone to attack him so that he can bite their throat out.

She swallows hard on a bubble of hysterical laughter. How very odd, to try to torture people to death while the camp was asleep. It hardly seems like good planning. She bites her lip to keep down the giggles. Now is not the time to have hysterics.

As Jet speaks, Alexi's heart starts pounding! 'What's he doing!' his mind screams. We don't need to be getting our nevers all rattled just as we get started!'

Alexi clears his throat, primarily because it's dry, but also to get attention.

"The Ahote have done their job well in keeping this land. It is a harsh land to live in and it was not your fault that caused this. It is a sign of great dedication of your people to have stayed here when there are greener places to go to. However, we are not here JUST because we wish, though. There were signs from our gods that the time had come to return, in a small way, to this land.

"We do not wish to cause any harm to the land, but cultivate it, make things grow, and live here respecting the land. You respect this land, and we would look to you for the best ways to do so.

"As far as the one you killed, we would have killed him too had we caught him!" This he says with force and shows his anger. "He was part of a bandit group that attacked us some ways back. They killed many of our people, but we killed their leaders and at least half their number! They were hired by agents of evil to destroy the caravan. Perhaps this is what you saw in your dreams. The Man-Bear is one of us. A good man with a big heart for the land and to take care of such things.

"This is the vision that I see, Evil things will come, and your people will need allies. The Evil will be here even if we decide to turn and go back. It would be a sad thing for us all if the Evil were to defeat you and none of us ever know of it. The fact the the Evil tried to stop us from getting here is a pure sign that our swords with yours makes for a strong alliance. DM Bob and Carla  d20+12=23 ; Muata 's check versus intimidate
Wednesday October 8th, 2008 10:30:06 PM

The conversation in the tent becomes heated as first Tocho and then Jet speak their minds. Muata feels compelled to step between the two. "What do you know of my people and our history?" Tocho spits out his words with vehemence. "Did your people awake one day to find the land baked and barren, the animals reduced to bones. Did your people wander the barrens as did the Ahote for years, your children dying each winter with no food in their bellies? This was our life until the spirit mother believed we would protect her."

Muata calms the man and moves him back towards the wall of the tent. He returns to Jet and speaks in an even voice. "Our ways are not yours. You have been asked inside our tent and your safety promised. There will be no blood spilled in here." Muata shows no sign of being intimidated.

Istaqa thumps his staff on the ground, and waits for a moment of silence. "There are many truths here inside these walls" he says.Istaqa looks directly at Alexi as he speaks. The gods of this wolf brother have also seen the same dark dreams, that evil will come and that the paths of the Qochata and the Ahote must cross. His eyes shift to Jet, "The flag bearer also speaks some truth, for the Ahote must change, but he is wrong, the land can be harmed as it was before and the Ahote must protect it."

Istaqa moves about the gathering, from person to person, he stops at each and looks into their eyes. His gaze is intent, as if he is looking into their souls. He stops at Keela. "You find our ways harsh but in his pain the spirit of your enemy was freed. He will not walk in the shadows, never to die."

When Istaqa reaches Fatine and her menagerie he reaches out and examines the jewellery that others find so strange. It bears an uncanny resemblance to the totems that adorn his own robes and the necklace of teeth that decorate his staff, for as Fatine can now easily discern, the teeth are not those of animals, but of enemies. "You know of the man-bear" it is more of a statement than a question. "He rides in the wagons? We must talk of this after." Istaqa is more at ease around Fatine than any of the other Ahote who all keep a respectful distance from her.

Istaqa intones some words in his native language and a small ball of fire appears in his outstretched palm. The flames spin and curl back on themselves in a lazy pattern, licking at the sleeves of his robe. He places it in the fire pit and sets the wood and grasses ablaze. "Sit" he implores them. "We must seek guidance from Catori."

Jet (AC: 18, HP: 28/28)
Wednesday October 8th, 2008 11:44:58 PM

"WE came here to learn of your people and history, yet we are met with aggression instead of kindness. We offer you gifts and they are spit upon like some ant upon a hill. We too have our own history, none of which you are aware of and yet you tell us we are ignorant."

Jet attempts to calm down, but he was a warrior in the streets long before he became a man of peace and this side of him is what shows first.

"The earth can be harmed, I did not deny that, but it will still exist when those that walk upon it are all gone. You know nothing of how our own people turn on ourselves for greed and evil and it is that which we fight against or travel from. The fact you would torture someone for killing one of your own is not what bothers me, but to assume he was with us without asking us is your mistake, not ours!"

Jet tries to settle down, but the veins in his arms, neck and face still pound with each pulse of his heart.

"The fact is, we are here and we will remain here because we were sent here, just as you have been sent here for whatever reasons your ancestors had. Now we can either get along and become well known for our strengths and weaknessess or we can battle and further diminish the power of our people for whatever evil comes this way to have an easier prey then the two of us together. Either way, I will not tolerate anyone insulting those I have sworn to protect and if it continues further, we will indeed go, where we please and in the manner we choose."

It is only when Istaqa begins to speak directly to Jet that he stills his tongue, staring down any that were not intimidated by his words of action.

He sits back down and asks "Who is this Catori?" The warrior priest listens closely to make sure, they are not speaking about a god of testing.

Beren meets the gaze of the clan priest without his glance wavering in the least. He does not uncover his face, and he does not speak. He kows too little of what is happening. He is a simple warrior who accepted a job to protect these people, and that he will do. He came here in the hopes of finding some acceptance inspite of his appearance, but he will fight regardless of his accpetance because he has given his word that he would.

When the old man invites everyone to sit down, he chooses a spot nearer the door, but still in the shadows. He hopes that his readiness to fight does not show outwardly and interfere with the negotiations.

Keela
Thursday October 9th, 2008 1:54:31 PM

Keela wasn't raised to answer back to authority. So when Istaqa stops and speaks to her, she lowers her gaze and murmurs "Yes, sir."

She doesn't believe a word of it, though.

She sits when requested, arranging her skirts modestly around her.

Fatine gives Istaqa a wide grin. "Aye. I know dee man-bear. His name be Darketh." She admires his trophies as he passes. Pointing to the teeth hanging from her neck, and the ears dangling from her arm, she explains, "I beat dem in combat. Now deir souls help me along dee way, wit' dee next trial down dee road. Dese be ta honor dose I best, not ta brag."

When Istaqa calls forth the fire, Fatine watches intently, attempting to discern exactly how he does so.

When it's Caelnin's turn to be gazed at, he tries to keep calm, unknowing what Istaqa is really doing and when he passes him without saying a word, he feels slightly relieved. Caelnin likes to get some attention, but never likes to be in the centre of it.

When asked to sit, he does as he is told and sits quietly, amazed by the dancing lights of the flame in front of him.

Alexi (AC: 17, HP:28/28) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37)
Thursday October 9th, 2008 11:09:24 PM

Alexi tries to show that he is rather relaxed through Jet's altercation, but it is difficult. At least Istaqa seems to have a good grip on the whole situation. It was of some comfort to hear Istaqa refer to him as wolf brother and Alexi found himself swelling up with pride a little. 'If only my regiment could see me now', he wished.

When Istaqa comes by and looks him in the eyes, he relaxes and ties to look right back, probing the depths of Istaqa's eyes as well. If there was a connection there Alexi was not astute enough to feel it but he hoped anyway. He whispers, "Truth sometimes can be like a puzzle, and it can take two to put the pieces together."

'Where did THAT come from,' Alexi wonders after he'd whispered it. He certainly wasn't known as a bard to be spouting such stuff!

When they all sit down again, Alexi makes a point to sit next to Fatine. He whispers to her, "Looks like we should'a put you up front. Who would'a guessed? We'll treat you as a queen if you can get us out of this with some semblance of order and some mearsure of success." He then smiles at her and winks. "No pressure. No pressure at all. Nope. None at all."

He then focuses on the fire.

Istaqa shakes his head as the altercation between Jet and the warrior Tocho continued unabated. When Jet asks who Catori is, the older spokesmand replies that she is the spirit mother, the living essence of the land. "Catori is our protector and we in turn protect her" he explains.

He listens to Fatine explain her trophies and nods in appreciation. "Those who have died honorably by my hand have strengthened me, and I too do them honor in this fashion. We have much in common Pauwau." Fatine recognizes the magic that created the flame as an evocation, but she does not detect the presence of any ley lines near by. The spell appears to be divine in nature. produce flame

Istaqa nods at Alexi's comments. "Finding peace is much the same. There are always two pieces to the puzzle".

Seeing Beren seated near the door instead of near the fire, Istaqa motions for him to come nearer, and points to a mat next to Muata. "Sit here where Catori can look into your eyes and see who hides beneath the mask". His voice is calm and encouraging.

When all are seated and the fire is crackling, he begins to sing, more of a chant than a song, but the words are unintelligable to even those who speak elvish. Carefully, he leans towards the fire and with a quick movement of his wrist, casts a handful of grass, seeds, bark and other small dried plant parts into the fire. The flames leap up to embrace this new fuel. A cloud of smoke billows forth and encompasses all around the fire. The smell is sweet and pungent, and a mild dizzy sensation begins to overcome those near the fire. [A Will save versus DC 14 will allow any to overcome the effect, or one can simply allow the strange sensation to take hold]

Istaqa and Muata breath in deeply, inhaling the smoke and welcoming it's effect.

Beren reluctantly moves closer to the others. When the strange fragrance and smoke begin to issue from the fire, he tries to resist the effects he feels, but is unable to do so. He feels slightly dizzy, and for a moment wonders if this is some sort of attack, until their hosts breath in the fumes and smoke as well. He settles back to see what this brings.

Strangely, his vission seems very acute in spite of the haze, but a slight ringing in his ears still troubles him.

As the smoke rises, Keela quickly ticks off what the they know of these strange people.

They tortured one of the raiders to death. The warrior-man yelled at Jet...well, at all of us, really. The older man seems wise. They claim to care for the earth, though we haven't really seen what they mean by that.

All in all, Keela decides she doesn't know enough about these people to inhale some strange drug solely on their say-so. She resists the effects, and manages to keep her head clear. [Will 17]

Jet watches the one named Tocho carefully. To him, he is the enemy at this time. If Tocho does not partake of the ritual, neither will Jet, but instead pulls another long gulp from his wine skin, even more upset thinking about how he figured, by now, that beautiful cask of ale, just sitting outside the tent flap door could have been opened and enjoyed instead of this, this, stuff.

Yet, if Tocho joins the ritual, Jet will also not be out done and with his large human lungs will try to breath in twice as much as the others, to prove his fear was left behind the day he earned his manhood, killing a fellow teenager over cheating at dice.

Gazing at the fire, Alexi's natural instinct is to resist the dizzyness, however Istaqa has instilled some sense of trust in their hosts. Although concentrating on the fire, he notices that Istaqa and Muata seem to be welcoming the smoke. As he would trust his commander, he relaxes and immitates Istaqa, breathing in the smoke. He wonders if he really will meet a spirit wolf. He'd always felt a strange connection with the wolf. Not the mean tales of childhood everyone heard, but the majestic animal of the wild. The calm and calculating animal. The... he lets his mind wander off.

After her brief diversion, she watches the strange smoke for a minute. Seeing Istaqa breath it in, she shrugs, leans forward, and inhales heartily. Sitting back, she closes her eyes momentarily to see what effect the smoke will have.

As Istaqa and his followers breath in the smoke, so to do the defenders of the caravan of settlers. Only Keela resists the mind altering effects of the smoke. Jet takes in an extra deep lungfull as he matches the actions of Tocho.

At first, the effect of the smoke is mild and relaxing. The party (with the exception of Keela) feel the tension drain from their bodies, to be replaced by a warmth that seems to spring from their very core. The fire crackles and blazes in front of them, it's sound amplified in their mind. Whether it is but a few seconds or a few minutes later is impossible to tell, but the narcotic affects of teh smoke begin to intensify. Jet and his companions can almost feel their own blood coursing through their veins, their vision begins to blur, then darken as if a curtain were being drawn.

The next few minutes are a blur as a hail of images invade their thoughts. A sea of grass bending beneath a gentle breeze...and then something sinister...hidden in the shadows...moving towards the surface...drawing the life force of the grassland into it...lightning...a spark...and then fire...racing across the dried out grass, destroying all that lies before it...people running for shelter...screaming in terror as the fire races forward. Atop a mesa, a cloaked figure cackles in delight as it seemingly controls the beast and the flames it has spawned. The creature in the shadows retreats beneath the ground...it's glowing red eyes close and it sleeps, it's bidding done.

The strange vision confuses and bothers the elven ranger. He works to voerthrow the effects of the drug and leave this strange vision. (will 15) What could this mean? Is their some demonic being possessing these people, or do they think there is one against which they fight? Beren does not know what to think, he only knows he wants this experience to end, and not to repeat it. Let others deal with the supernatural, he is content to fight what he can see.

Whether he actually moves or not, he is not sure, but he attempts to rise and leave the hut and this strange fire.

Jet (AC: 18, HP: 28/28)
Monday October 13th, 2008 12:06:52 PM

Jet still watching the image does not understand it's meaning. Fire is not just a destroyer, but provides life as well. The burning grass providing nutrients for future growth of that which feeds it. A dark figure? Oh well, even Jet is known to be dark and sometimes sinister. I am sure that punk that was left to die with his boots cut and a single horse didn't find the trial by Ebyeron all that benevolent. As for sensations, this smoke does really nothing more for him then a shot of fine whiskey and a dark ale chaser couldn't provide.

Come to think of it, they are all on a Mesa, this cloaked figue could well be one of their own. Tocho, Tonto, Roncho, whatever that twirps name is could be the figure or perhaps another with less to say.

Jet waits for the host to speak on whatever this vision may hold before he passes his own judgement.

Alexi tries to pierce through the fog, see the details, see individuals. But it is a blur and shifts too fast. Is this the past? Is this the future? Did these people running from the fire look the same as the Ahote of today? Was the dark evil figure of supernatural origin or of human origin, twisted by evil?

Alexi continues to inhale the smoke and see more of the vision. He thought there'd be a wolf in there somewhere, and he looks for it.
