The Other Side of the Portal (DM JohnP) Tuesday September 16th, 2008 11:44:48 PM
The Bloodpack assemble in the Portal Room, having decided to learn where Horvis and the goblin vampire might have come from. The removal of the magical and mechanical alarms and traps did not take particularly long with everyone helping. And then it was time for the activation of the portal. The group stood together, close enough to link hands if they needed after the magical portal was activated. Then each of them fingered their tokens and spoke in preparation for the teleportation.
"Trellus, of the Bloodpack"
"Tishe' Bloodpack of Oddholme"
"Yanosh of the Bloodpack from Oddholme"
"Vayine of the Bloodpack from Oddholme"
"Gilan of the Bloodpack, of Oddholme"
The others - Flea, Grymash and Olaf - silently mouth their names, although no one can tell why they have been struck dumb. The four glyphs around the portal are pressed and ...
++++++
A flowing silver light flashes upwards from the glyphs surrounding the portal, clearly illuminating everyone within the circle. The light is so bright that nothing beyond the portal's borders can be seen yet, somehow, no one needs to squint or shelter from the light, not even the dark elves. The circle of light banishes all shadows within the circle, yet it is not harsh or unforgiving. When they look at one another, the Bloodpack can see everything about one another, even the play of emotions across each person's face. For what might be an instant or an eternity, the light makes everything clear and beautiful.
Then, either within the space of a heartbeat or after an interminable time, the light slowly fades until the Bloodpack can see around themselves.
The destination is another portal that is similar in nearly every way to the one within Oddholme except that this one is within a stone chamber at least 100 feet in diameter with a domed ceiling that arches overhead. The chamber is illuminated, perhaps magically, since there are no detectable sources of that light. A dark tunnel that must be 40 feet wide and 20 feet high leads away from the chamber. A coating of dust on the floor outside the circle suggests that it has been unused for some time.
The portal is in the centre of the chamber so the walls are at least 20 feet from the edges of the portal. Carved figures and symbols are visible on the walls of the chamber. Close examination would require leaving the portal, as would examination of any part of the room.

Grymash d20+10=15 ; Wednesday September 17th, 2008 1:40:10 AM
Starting before all the glyphs are fully pressed, Grymash says, "Ohh, be it Gry turn now? Uhhh, Grymash of da Bloodpack of Oddhol .... whoa piggie dumps, what be dat??" Clearly surprised by the lighting effects of the portal.

A finger to her lips, Flea moves forward, ever so quietly (Move Silently-20).

Trellus looks about the cavern carefully, poised to react to an immediate attack. He relaxes just a bit when one doesn't materialize.
Nodding acknowledgement of Flea's 'quiet' signal, the cleric points out to her a pair of tracks - goblin-sized footprints leading into the portal. And, more importantly, a trail of humanoid footprints bigger than human-sized leading away. Trellus looks up at Flea and silently mouths a name - Horvis.

Standing in the light, Tishe' is amazed, everything is so clear! As the light fades and the domed room comes into focus, the brown-haired woman realizes that she was holding her breath and has to remind herself to exhale.
Looking around, hoping to keep in memory the feeling of KNOWING, (Spot: 13, Survival: 22) Tishe' sees and passes on the information about the light keeping all shadows away from the room, and the goblin-prints and larger, human prints in the dusty floor.
"Care to bet a candied hopper that those man-sized prints are Horvis?"
A low "ribbit!" from her satchel agrees with Tishe' as Wart looks out with his horn-rimmed eyes.

Yanosh Wednesday September 17th, 2008 4:02:08 PM
Slowly Yanosh looks around the cavern. His Dwarven scenses letting him know things only a Dwarf can tell. War Axe in over his right shoulder and his shield griped in his left hand, Yanosh feels the new addition to his arsonal. His light crossbow hangs from his left side.
Olaf d20+4=22 ; d20+4=17 ; Wednesday September 17th, 2008 6:33:05 PM
Taking in the huge cavern, Olaf's eyes widen briefly. Speaking to Yanosh, he notes "This...this is deep. Feels like we're deep in the earth. Spooky, that feelin'." He makes a second pass, recognizing the strange illumination as magical in nature, and wondering if others have come before (spot 22, survival 17).
"I'm agreen' with Tishe' on this one...looks like the vampire n' maybe Horvis came through here. Though, don't know why they'd come so far. Maybe we're closer to the woldsblood this way?"
Gilan d20+23=32 ; d20+6=19 ; Wednesday September 17th, 2008 8:38:53 PM
Gilan is stunned by the sudden eruption of light. As he watches with a slight cock of his head, he tries to make use of the ability to see new things. With a shake of his head he has to look down at himself and see what it is that can be seen in himself.
Then it is gone and they are standing inside of another room, one somewhere else. He is immediately alert to any signs of trouble or ambush, but that soon comes to be a moot point as they seem to be alone. Noticing the tracks like the rest he bends to study them for a few minutes, though he is in no way an expert tracker.
He turns his attention to study the tracks closer, trying to get an idea of how old each are. Maybe one had met the other as they passed through here. Maybe the vampire goblin worked for Horvis as he could not see it being the other way around.

Vayine holds his shield up high in order to defend his face from any sudden attack, after a moment he lowers the thing and gazes about... "nice place he has here, shady lighting too." The drow doesn't move afraid to mess up any hints that might be strewn about... knowing that tracking was never his strenght.
The Other Side of the Portal (DM JohnP) Wednesday September 17th, 2008 11:15:52 PM
Grymash comes through the portal with everyone else, then stands blinking from the bright light of the teleportation.
Flea, after recovering from any effects of the teleport, decides to explore. She moves silently over the floor of the chamber towards the tunnel leading away. The tunnel stretches away into the darkness as Flea approaches but her eyes are sharp enough to reveal the first 100 feet or more. The walls, floors and ceilings of the tunnel are similar to those of the chamber. The exception is that large glyphs are carved into the tunnel walls while the chamber walls have a multitude of small figures and symbols carved into the stone.
After Trellus warns her, Flea keeps watch for the tracks. She can see the small footprints leading towards from the portal from the dark tunnel. The small tracks end suddenly, as if whatever made them alighted from the air without pause.
The others look about the cavern, trying to learn as much as they can before proceeding further. Gilan spots another set of large footprints and he is certain that they are identical to the first set. When he studies them, the shifter concludes that Horvis (or whatever made them) was larger than human-sized and walked both into the portal and away from it. However, the tracks don't lead very far from the portal until Gilan finds where Horvis (or whatever) shifted into or from the form of some kind of flying creature, probably a dire bat. With just Flea walking around, Gilan feels that he has noticed every track of interest in the room.
When Tishe' and the others examine the walls of the chamber they notice the elaborate carvings there. Yanosh (DM Apology: I got confused about which character was a dwarf) notices the fine carving, as if a master carver had done the work. Stepping back somewhat, the Bloodpack realize that familiar locations from the Sargrass are depicted on the walls - Hook City, Oddholme, and the area around Rattledam even though the city isn't depicted.
Flea d20+9=23 d20+11=31 Thursday September 18th, 2008 12:15:37 AM "Sheesh!" says Flea in a loud whisper, breaking the silence, "looks like Horvis and his friends are mapping out the plains!" Becoming quiet again, Flea moves as far forward as she can reasonably see.
"You want me to send some lights down that way?" she asks, looking over her shoulder for a signal from the cleric.
If, Trellus gives the okay, Flea will cast Dancing Lights* and send them down the tunnel where the footprints seem to go before they dissappear.
Regardless, she peers down the tunnel to see as far as she can, and listens with her keen pointed ears. (Spot=23, Listen=31, nat. 20)

With a glance around one last time he shakes his head. "This is most likely our man." He glances around some more and then comes over to look at the mural and then frowns. Glancing to the others his hands move in a number of complicated passes, as his voice speaks out a number of words in some strange language. With another glance to the entrance that they will most likely be using he reaches out and touches the stone mural, reducing it to nothing more than a slop of mud...or at least he hopes it will work.
Turning back he glances to Trellus and smiles. "Are we ready to move?" He is not sure that he could have told them much more than he already has about the tracks and he does not try. More than ready to move he starts towards the entrance. "Anyone in need of faster movement?" He has access to one last spell of that type and it will last for a long time.

Walls (DM JohnP) d20+10=14 ; Friday September 19th, 2008 12:22:28 AM
Standing at the entrance of the tunnel, Flea calls upon some of the lessons she learned as a young gnome to summon some dancing balls of light after Trellus gives his assent. The lights bob down the tunnel at her mental command, illuminating the walls and ceiling as the move. It isn't far to where the footprint tracks begin and end and beyond that point the floors seem undisturbed. The light is sufficient for Flea to see that her earlier perceptions were correct - the walls are occasionally decorated with large glyphs but are otherwise plain. Flea sends the the lights to the limit of the spell's range but the tunnel continues onwards into the darkness. She sees no intersecting tunnels or other details to break the consistent pattern of unfinished stone and glyphs.
The others examine the carved scenes on the walls of the chamber, examining both the images and the mehtods of making them. Tishe' and Trellus both think that the marks are old, and the content certainly seems that way. When they look more closely, the pair can find scenes that seem to depict the history of the Sargrass. One scene that is repeated several times depicts great changes, even desctruction, in the Sargrass. When they examine these scenes, they also see inhabitants of neighbouring parts of the Southern Continent and conclude that it may be Great Migrations that are depicted. When they move in the direction of what should be older scenes, they find a stretch where the stone has not be carved. A scholar who spent some time here may learn a considerable amount about the history of the Sargrass.
Gilan decides to experiment and attempts to deface or remove the marks upon the stone. When he attempts to use his magic, he feels resistance from the stone and his magic fails to make any effect.
Trellus Friday September 19th, 2008 10:56:02 AM
Trellus shakes his head at Tishe's suggestion regarding throwing up a web spell. "It'd block us from seeing and hearing if anyone is coming," he replies. "And I think we'd be better off knowing that."
The blond man muses aloud "OK, no way did Oglians make these carvings, so they're out. A thousand feet deep. Dwarves maybe?"
"Uh, Gil? Maybe we should leave the rock alone?"
Trellus indicates the tunnel. "OK dudes, let's go exploring." He walks up to Flea and lays a palm on top of her head, intoning "Domi protect you." [Protective Ward on Flea: +10 bonus on next save, expires in one hour if unused] "After you," he grins.
Trellus will let Flea, Olaf, Gry and Yanosh go ahead, and fall in behind them. He catches the eyes of Gilan and Vayine, and cautions "watch our backs"

You can feel him bristle as his eyes fall once again on the map and he turns to move towards the doorway. With a quick movement he steps off to the side and waits to bring up the rear of the group with Vayine.
While standing and waiting he silently wonders why he would care about the map at all. Then it dawns on him and he shakes his head, smiling. There were still good people back in Rattledam and this map gave enough of an idea of how to find that place that it raised his hackles. "I think that you can figure your backs to be covered...you just watch the front." There is a mixture of mirth in his voice as he speaks and his eyes flash in silent laughter as well.

Flea leads the way for as long as the drow's dancing lights remain alight. When the magic expires (and if no one provides a Light spell), she reaches into her HHHaversack and collects candles and a bit of chalk.
"This isn't the best , but it'll have to do," she quips as she lights a candle. As the group moves down the tunnel, she leaves her mark, a stylised F at regular intervals.
Figuring there is no sense in trying to hide with the candle in her hand, Flea none the less tries to move quietly and remains vigilent as she works her way along the passage wary of hidden dangers.

Grymash wishes that his pack would keep their inside voices in their heads. It's not a harsh thought for a half-orc to have. A harsh thought would be a backhand across someone's face for not keeping their fly trap shut because he is trying to listen to the surroundings. However, his human side (if his other half is human), seems to be prevailing. No threats of physical violence are yet to come, but who knows, this day is young. This place makes Grymash nervous. Looking back at his pack, he gives them a low "shhhhhh"! Maybe now he can hear what's going on. Then a dreadful thought floats to the top, maybe the voices in his head have returned. The Bloodpack organize themselves for the exploration of the tunnel leading away from the chamber at Trellus' direction. The cleric casts a protective spell on Flea before motioning the gnome forward. Then he falls into step with Tishe' as the group moves towards the tunnel.
Flea takes the lead with Olaf not far behind. The pair move into the tunnel, trying to move quietly and sneak through the shadows. Grymash and Yanosh pace along, too, although they let the sneakier types get a little distance ahead. As they move, Grymash things that he may hear something from far down the tunnel even though it may simply be echoes from everyone's movements.
Vayine and GIlan take up the rear, ensuring that nothing sneaks upon the Bloodpack from behind.
As Flea and Olaf move into the dark tunnel, the nearest glyphs on the tunnel walls begin to glow. The glyphs brighten slightly as the Bloodpack approach, although the scouts stop when they notice it. Neither Flea nor Olaf notice any mechanical device that would explain the light.

The Lights Are On (DM JohnP) Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 11:41:27 PM
The Bloodpack pause, investigating the glow of light from the glyphs on each wall of the tunnel. Flea casts a spell that allows reading of magical texts but the magic reveals nothing, removing one worry. The High Woldian glyphs on the walls are simply decoration and light sources, not magical traps like the Bloodpack may have encountered before.
Trellus and Tishe' examine the glowing glyphs and conclude that it is some form of magical effect, very similar to a Light spell. Tishe' concludes that proximity probably triggers the effect. The lights do not go out or even change in intensity when Yanosh covers his shield, strengthening the opinion of the theurge. However, when they get closer, the glyphs gradually brighten to equal to an Everburning Torch.
Gilan cannot see any tracks on the floor aside from those left by Flea and Olaf. Nothing, not even Horvis or the vampire, have left sign of their passage. The shifter does see long shadows cast by his companions, moving around the walls. Nothing magical or threatening, but simply shadows cast by the bright lights glowing from the walls.
When the dwarf looks ahead, he can see more glyphs on the walls ahead of the Bloodpack.

Gilan [longstrider] d20+6=9 ; d20+6=26 ; Wednesday September 24th, 2008 8:01:55 PM
Gilan starts to move again when the line starts to move. He puzzles over the lack of tracks but with Horvis being a druid and most likely a shifter like him, he could do that. The vampire goblin could have very easily went mist or climbed the wall to get through here...but why would they avoid leaving prints.
As he ponders this he cannot help but pass along his observations to the others, though quietly. "You know...I have seen no prints from either the vampire or Horvis along this path." Let the others make of it what they will, though he doubts they missed anything back.

Long Shadows (DM JohnP) Wednesday September 24th, 2008 11:58:15 PM
The Bloodpack carefully move forward, their senses alert and moving carefully to prevent any noise from revealing their movement. The glow from the glyphs increases in intensity as they move closer, as they noted before. After they pass a glyph, the glow fades until the tunnel is dark behind them. The effect is such that the party is always travelling in light with darkness ahead and behind. As Olaf mentions, it would be extremely difficult to remain hidden. Still, each person casts long dancing shadows ahead and behind. Of course, Olaf's is shorter since he is trying to remain close to the wall.
The light from the chamber where they arrived shines down the tunnel, clearly showing both Trellus and Gilan that nothing is lurking behind them. The light makes it difficult, nearly impossible really, to see very much in the portions of the tunnel ahead and behind them that are in darkness. Still, both believe that they see something small moving in the distance ahead of them. Whatever it is, it is too far away to tell anything.
The silence is broken only by the sounds of boots moving carefully on stone. Flea and Olaf detect no signs of traps.
Glancing back to the light of the chamber, everyone feels that they have moved at least 100 feet into the tunnel. The far end is nowhere in sight ahead of them.
Gilan mentions the lack of tracks, wondering aloud why Horvis and the vampire made that effort.
Grymash d20+2=5 ; d20+5=7 ; Thursday September 25th, 2008 3:25:48 AM
These tunnels are making Grymash increasingly nervous. The glowing glyphs seem to make his blood boil every time one lights up as they approach. Each one like an eye opening up to watch them walk by. He keeps a constant watch for danger and maintains his guard over his pack, even though his senses are telling him to strike out at silence and make his presence known. He thinks, Come on out cowards! Stop your hiding. No warriors blood flows through your veins?
"Something's out in front of us," Trellus states quietly. "Something small."
The blond man frowns. "So why are we lighting the place up, and its not?" he wonders aloud. As he ponders this, he also recalls Gilan's comment on the lack of tracks. "Maybe pressure on the floor activates the lights?" he guesses. "Lemmee try something."
Calling out a command word, Trellus lifts off from the ground [Winged Boots] and flies back down the hallway (toward the Portal chamber). He goes only far enough to determine if the light glyphs register his presence or not. Once he's got his answer, the cleric returns to his position with the group.

Tishe' is actually getting a little impatient with her packmates, furtively shuffling down a corridor that, because it lights up, is impossible to be sneaky. "Why are we going so slow? Do you think the floor is full of traps or something? Let's just move out and see what's at the end?" she urges.
"No reason." Flea puts her hands on her hips and eyes the never ending tunnel. "No one would usually trap a long tunnel. At least not without some sort of clear marker for their friends to recognize the dangerous parts."
She saunters up the tunnel between the glowing runes, but her eyes are still open for changes in the patterns of the runes.

Gilan [longstrider] Thursday September 25th, 2008 8:35:47 PM
Gilan makes no comment about the movement that he spotted as it has already been commented about. As Trellus begins his own trial on some thoughts that he has he starts to grin. Surely a vampire and druid such as himself would be able to avoid something as easy as stepping on the floor. If that is true, than they had been setting off the trap for the past few minutes that it took them to travel down the tunnel.
He snorts as he wonders if things have been properly warmed up for them up ahead. Still he is not too keen to find out and will instead wait for the return of Trellus. Still part of him is torn as he sees others obviously moving on without taking the time to think things out...and not even what Trellus said is ringing any bells. "Maybe the light itself is the trap...or at least a warning system for the true trap." There he has said it and the others can listen or not as they want. He remembers a vague phrase about leading a horse to water...though the last of it is lost to him.
Floating Along (DM JohnP) Thursday September 25th, 2008 10:29:51 PM
Grymash stumps along as quietly as he can. Which might be not very. The light from the glyphs is making the half-orc nervous.
Trellus thinks about whatever is flying ahead of them and how it hasn't caused the lights to come on. Combing that with Gilan's comments, the cleric activates a magic item to test a hypothesis. A short flight back towards the portal chamber confirms his suspicion - a flying creature does not turn on the lights.
Tishe' is getting a might nervous and impatient. Since the party clearly can't sneak up on anything, why are they bothering to sneak? Yanosh acts upon the theurge's comments and goes stomping ahead, ausing more lights to come on. Flea does the same, except in a more stylish manner. The gnome does not detect any signs of traps along the way.
Gilan doesn't get much satisfaction from providing the clues that solved the current puzzle. After all, the Bloodpack has been flicking lights on for the past several minutes to signal whatever might be watching.
Now, of course, there is the question of how to proceed.
Trellus Friday September 26th, 2008 9:33:42 AM
"Hold up, dudes," Trellus calls out. Assembling the pack together, the cleric reveals his discovery that the lights don't light up if you're not on the floor.
"I don't think we call all fly, at least not for any decent amount of time. But, if a couple of us fly out ahead, they may be able to surprise anyone who thinks we're all where the lights are." Trellus flicks a grin at Gilan. "I assume you got a flying something in your bag of tricks." He turns to Olaf and Flea. "How 'bout you two?"
His plan is for the main group to stay put a couple minutes while the flyers (Gilan, Flea and Olaf maybe) get out ahead. Then the main group just keeps walking. As both Gilan and Flea are under Trellus' Status spell, he can keep general track of them.
Tishe' (AC 19 HP 66/66) (Mage Armor) Friday September 26th, 2008 12:18:04 PM
Tishe' is surprised that her mention of traps is taken seriously. But then again, she supposes, that really isn't her expertise and she definitely leans on Flea and Olaf for that advice.
She idly plays with her wavy brown hair while Trellus gets his plan in motion. "I can make both Flea and Olaf fly if necessary", she states. Pending the need, Tishe' is prepared to cast Fly twice (using her Pearl of Power) for 7 minutes duration.

He has leaned his head back and happens to be looking at the ceiling when he chuckles. "How about the ceiling...is it magiced?" Without another word he is soon in the form of a large lizard and easily scaling up the wall till he is standing on the ceiling. It was nice to have sticky padded feat at times and this form came to him as easily as any other. He races off a ways down the tunnel till he is in the darkness and then a little further...when he is sure of his findings, he returns to the group.
With that little experiment, he should be more than ready to help out the group. Even for him, it is surprising how he can step into the skin of one of his wild brothers and feel no different than in his human skin. In fact it sometimes feels even better, empowering.

After the shifter moves partway down the ceiling of the tunnel, the Bloodpack realize that the magical lights occur whenever a living creature is in contact with any surface - wall, floor or ceiling - of the tunnel.
Trellus suggests that some scouts be enspelled to fly down the tunnel to learn what may await them. Tishe' offers to cast some spells and Vayine volunteers to do so using his own magics. Flea waits to scout. Yanosh had moved out in front of the 'Pack but is now waiting for the others.

The cleric nods once to himself, a sign he's made some kind of decision.
"Let's hold off on the flying picks. We may need 'em later. Gil, if you can go to a flying form, go ahead and shoot out in front of us. The rest of us'll walk."

After some discussion, Gilan shifts form into a bat and wings his way down the tunnel. Flea and Olaf continue scouting ahead while the others move slowly behind. The glyphs continue to glow as the party approach and then fade behind them. The darkness beyond the light contains who knows what mysteries. Although, there is some assurance since Gilan has neither returned nor launched into battle. Moving slowly, the party makes advances perhaps 300 feet from the portal chamber while Gilan is out scouting.
Everyone is wondering what the shifter will encounter while he is out in the darkness by himself.
Gilan only - Highlight to display spoiler: {The bat's eyes slowly adjust to the darkness as it flies away from the lighted area occupied by his companions. After flying over 1000 feet from the portal chamber, Gilan senses a change in the tunnel somewhere ahead. His bat senses tell him that the tunnel expands and, perhaps, branches 100 feet or more ahead of where he is hovering.
Further, his now dark-adapted eyes tell him that there is some kind of weak, feeble light up ahead. Certainly less than that provided by the glyphs but he is too far for his low-light vision to tell him more. Still, the bat's eyes are sufficient to detect motion up ahead. Looking back, the dim glow tells Gilan that his companions are roughly 700 feet behind him.
His bat hearing also informs him that there is movement up ahead. Again, he is too far for his blindesense to tell him more.
Worse yet, his bat hearing detects the sounds of at least one other bat up ahead. The bat isn't actively looking for anything (yet) but may be soon.

As the shifter keeps flying closer to his companions, he can tell that the dire bat isn't simply interested in a meal.
The flight continues until Gilan can easily see the glow from where his companions are standing in the tunnel. Looking towards the bright light, Gilan can now easily make out all of his companions. Should he keep going?}

Come Back! Come Back! (DM JohnP) Thursday October 2nd, 2008 11:43:13 PM
The Bloodpack sees a bat emerge from the darkness ahead of them. It seems that Gilan has brought something back with him. Everyone else gets a brief glimpse of a much larger bat before it disappears back into the darkness. Gilan quickly turns and heads back into the darkness in pursuit of the larger bat. The shifter finds that the bat is flying much faster as it heads back towards the junction of the tunnel. If Gilan wishes to catch the bat, he will either need to sprint or take some other action.
Of course, his companions could also do something if they don't mind firing blindly into the darkness ahead of them.
Flea d20+13=19 ; Friday October 3rd, 2008 12:20:57 AM
"Whoa-ho! What was that!" cries Flea as some flying thing emerges momentarily, only to dissappear down the tunnel again.
"I'll bring it down!" volunteers Flea, but her skills fail her, and only a dribble of light is discharged from her wand as it fizzles uselessly. (UMD=19, fail)

If he is not so lucky, he'll pick up the pace, the walls providing light as he moves forward at regular speed.
Pursuit (DM JohnP) Sunday October 5th, 2008 11:03:06 PM
The dire bat flies into the darkness, pursued by Gilan in the form of a bat. The dire bat gradually pulls away, flying faster than Gilan can. The shifter feels that the dire bat is sprinting (i.e. using the Run maneuver during flight).
The rest of the Bloodpack doesn't see much since this race is occuring in the darkness beyond the lights.
Unless the group conceives of something, the dire bat will be able to escape.

Sobering a bit, he continues. "Yeah, it could be Horvis. Or a friend of Horvis. Or a pet of Horvis. Or it could just be a hungry bat. We won't know till something happens. All we can do until then is keep moving ahead and trust Gilan."
The cleric follows his own advice, smiling to himself at some internal thought.

Upon Gilan's return, Trellus figures its time for a quick conference. With that in mind, he tries to get Gry's attention and points to the barbarian's dagger followed by a slashing motion acorss his throat.
Whether or not Gry ends his spell, the cleric turns his attention to the problem at hand. The pack has only been through the portal a short time, making turning back such an unwelcome option that he doesn't even bring it up. Instead, Trellus goes straight to work on dealing with the imminent welcoming party.
"Sounds like somebody is using bats to scout, too," he observes. "The question being, when are they gonna decide to show up."
"I'd say if you got any buffing spells that last an hour or so, now would be a good time to use 'em. Then we keep going and see what's what."
With that in mind, Trellus casts two more spells on himself - one with the aid of his Rod of Extend. Once everyone is ready, he gives the Gilan the nod to scout out again, and resumes the march.
At the intersection, he'll go straight - unless something comes up.

Advancing to the Intersection (DM JohnP) Wednesday October 8th, 2008 11:46:29 PM
The Bloodpack makes preparations before advancing towards the intersection and whatever waits there for them. Trelllus and Tishe' cast some protective spells before moving out. After relating what he had seen, GIlan takes to the air again and moves ahead to scout. Flea is also scouting, but not quite as far in front as the shifter. The others - Yanosh, Olaf, Grymash and Vayine - surround the casters to protect them.
As the Bloodpack advance, not even the scouts hear or see anything from up ahead. Gilan had sensed several other creatures besides the dire bat but there is no sign that those potential opponents have advanced to meet them. Of course, the glyphs on the walle begin to glow as the party approaches each one, fasing gradually as they advance beyond each glyph. The nimbus of light that surrounds the party would be comforting if the Bloodpack didn't know that the light was announcing their approach to anyone waiting ahead.
FInally, GIlan gets close enough that his bat eyesight can see the start of the intersection. He is roughly 60 feet back from the corners, with most of the party roughly 60 feet behind. Flea is nearly halfway between Gilan and the party. Gilan cannot see anything but that may be because the dire bat and whatever else were around the corner.
Gilan [longstrider] [wildshape: bat] Thursday October 9th, 2008 12:42:14 AM
Flying up so that he can get closer to the ceiling he moves on down to the intersection. He flies a quick circle looking for signs of trouble and hopefully not get into any himself. He is pretty sure that one of the pack has followed along behind him rather fast as he can see the lights lighting behind him.
He tries to keep himself ready for any attacks that might be aimed at him, falling into a more defensiver flight pattern to aid in this.

Or, if he has, the opponents don't know that he has spotted them.}
Trellus speaks to the others and keeps moving forward.
Yanosh triggers a defensive magic and keeps in front of the casters as they get closer to the intersection.
Tishe' stays near the back, out of the way of the fighters.
Olaf isn't too sure about the way that Yanosh is blinking in and out of existence, but stands beside his companion.
Grymash, Vayine and Flea also keep moving ahead. The big half-orc is on one side of the group while Vayine is on the other. Flea is moving slightly ahead of the others, partway between them and the shifter flying overhead.
Everyone is now close enough to the intersection to see that it is not light like the tunnel that they are walking through. It may be a difference between the two tunnels, or it may be something else. There are no creatures visible in the intersection although the shadows are quite dark near the upper corners with the ceiling overhead.

As his body fully takes on the form of the remorhaz, he puts his hindquarters down the path that will leave him faceing the minotuar. What sounds more like a roar, he cannot help but smile for real this time. "BOO!!!" Hopefull his huge size will allow him to block off those behind him rather will and he can hinder the progress of the minotuar and other. The giant creature easily drops the short distance to the floor and then threatens the surrounding area. This alerts his companions, too.
Surprisingly, the intersection does not light up when the shifter hits the floor.
Vayine continues to guard the casters.
Trellus figures that the transformation of Gilan is a signal. The cleric responds by casting a spell on Vayine and then moves ahead.
Tishe' starts casting a summoning spell.
Yanosh charges ahead with his axe raised, finishing just behind the remorhaz.
Flea moves to the other side of the remorhaz.
Olaf dashes ahead to protect Flea.
Grymash charges forward to stand just behind the main combat. DM NOTE - The map does not reflect this as I didn't revise after posting. Grymash had earlier dropped his Silenced item and I didn't notice any mention of picking it up.
++++++
The minotaur moves across the ceiling to reach Gilan. Even though it has a falchion strapped to its back, the minotaur simply punches at the transformed shifter. It misses badly, however. Minotaur -- slam misses AC 15
A rapke skeleton charges from the north corridor towards Gilan. It moves to close with the remorhaz, allowing an attack. Once it closes, the rapke skeleton almost bites the giant worm. Rapke skeleton -- bite misses AC 30
Another rapke skeleton moves from the other corridor towards Olaf. It bites at the human cleric and misses as well.
A dire boar lumbers from the north tunnel towards Gilan, also allowing an attack. It also misses the shifter. Zombie dire boar -- gore misses AC 24
A group of smaller undead then move in. The skeletons are able to close with the leading members of the Bloodpack but the zombies are shuffling along somewhere behind.
Anyone looking up notices a humanoid in gaseous form moving across the ceiling above the combat.

As the skeleton rapke charges into the fight, Gilan snaps his huge head at the thing. His full intent is to do as much damage as possible as it move in on him. He then turns his attention to the dire boar that lumbers in on him as well. Once again his huge head shifts and his teeth seek to find purchase on another target. So far he is not doing bad as all his enemies have missed him and he is able to stall them out for companions to get to him.
With he retaliations towards the closing monsters he turns his attention to the minotaur that has closed in and tried to punch him. This time his teeth seek to find the tender flesh of something that might be a challenge to him. Either way, his pack will be here soon and the enemy will have a lot of different things to worry about. In fact, he is sure that Olaf is already there but he is too busy to do much more than notice.

As the rapke skeleton closes with the remorhaz, Gilan lashes out and catches the undead squarely. The rest of the undead close with the shifter. DM Note -- I don't see anything about Gilan having Combat Reflexes, or it being a bonus feat for the remorhaz
Gilan then attacks the minotaur hanging from the ceiling. Neither of his attacks manage to hit that threat.
Tishe' summons two celestial creatures that dash off to threaten and attack the minotaur. As they close with it, the falchion lashes out and hits both of the summoned creatures. The damage from the minotaur's fists may be enough to destroy the bees. AoO vs. first Celestial Bee -- hits AC 29, 16 damage (crushing) AoO vs. second Celestial Bee -- hits AC 28, 14 damage (crushing)
Trellus casts a protective spell upon himself and then casts Prayer upon his companions and the opponents. Then the cleric moves closer to Gilan and the undead.
Vayine casts some lights to illuminate the combat before moving closer.
Grymash flies into a rage and charges after the closest of the skeletons (S6). He smashes it into flying bits of bone.
Olaf hits the other nearby skeleton but sees his sickle harmlessly clatter off the thing's ribacage. The cleric then moves backward to re-arm and is able to avoid the feeble attacks of the human skeletons and even the rapke skeleton.
Flea stands and thinks about what to do. Yanosh also stands still even though this is the best tactic when facing this number of opponents.
++++++
The minotaur keeps attacking Gilan, figuring that the shifter it the most immediate threat. The first blow nearly hits the remorhaz and the second isn't even close. Minotaur -- slam 1 misses AC 29 Minotaur -- slam 2 misses AC 14 (didn't account for Prayer)
The first rapke skeleton tries to bite and claw the shifter but cannot hit. Rapke skeleton 1 (RS1) -- bite misses AC 22, claw misses AC 13, claw misses AC 24 (didn't account for Prayer or flanking)
The other rapke skeleton moves closer to attack Grymash. The skeletal jaws close on the half-orc but barely scratch the surface. The claws don't come close to Grymash's hide. Rapke skeleton 2 (RS2) -- bite hits AC 22 (accounting for Prayer), 9 damage (absolute minimum), claw misses AC 17, claw misses AC 11
The dire boar zombie misses the shifter when it attempted to gore Gilan. Dire boar zombie (DBZ) -- gore misses AC 15
The zombies shuffle closer and one of them (Z3) manages to get close enough to Gilan to attack if it survives any opportunity attack. If it does, it manages to score the hide of the remorhaz. If it doesn't survive, the last zombie will also close with Gilan and attack, but doesn't hit. Z3 -- hits AC 21 (threat), not confirmed AC 17, 2 damage Z4 -- misses AC 10
The human skeletons randomly attack an opponent close to them. The first three cannot hit Gilan. The last two skeletons attack Flea but cannot hit the nimble gnome.
S1 -- misses Gilan, AC 14 S2 -- misses Gilan, AC 11 S3 -- misses Gilan, AC 13 S4 -- misses Flea, AC 3 S5 -- misses Flea, AC 8

Gilan snaps his head around to scar the zombie that moves within his threat range, but he does not take the time to see if it falls. He is already turning back to the minotaur that might be the biggest problem in this fight. Having been unable to get purchase on the large being last round makes his scales glow red, though he cannot put out the heat that a normal remorhaz can. Still his jaws once again snap twice at the minotaur, trying to latch on and pull him in for closer combat.
Gilan is just able to figure out what is going on when he hears the mumbling, though he cannot see the one doing it. His voice is pitche slightly lower than usual and rumbles as it escapes his worm mouth. "Summoner nearby." He hopes that his warning is enough for someon to deal with it...as he does not want to break off combat just yet. Once the full power of the Bloodpack is upon these beasts, he might look for the caster.
