Gunther, Charm Animal
Thursday September 18th, 2008 11:48:19 PM

The warrior steps aside with Kendry and listens to his words as patiently as he can. When Kendry is finished, Gunther speaks. His voice is low, and he occasionally lets out little puffs of air. He's obviously struggling to maintain composure. "All I ask is that you do not make blanket statements about orcs...just like you vouldn't about elves or dvarves..."

When Kendry mentions his cousin, Gunther flushes and the breaths come out in faster puffs. His voice is elevated. "And elves killed my broder. Does dat makes dem all bad?!" The big cat trainer takes several moments to compose himself, in which time Kendry asks him about children. This time the warrior stares down at the ground and his voice is barely a whisper. "No...I have no children. But...ven....I do, I vill do my best to teach him de vay of my clan before he has to go..."

Kendry wraps it up and so does Gunther. "Please, just keep in mind dat dere are some vithin de new orc nation dat are not bad." The warrior smiles at the halfling and pats him on the shoulder. "Now, let's go save de Vold."
-----------

Joining up with the others, Gunther settles in with Delilah and readies himself for the trip.

On Orcs (Kim)
Friday September 19th, 2008 3:43:50 AM

Kendry the bard considers Gunther's words. "Well, I would learn more from you of those who are as you say. Yes, I should temper my sweeping statements. It might do well for me to learn their tongue, as well. If time permits, would you be willing to teach me a few words?"

"Ah, yes. Let us save the Wold," he agrees with a smile.

Toward the Burgomeister (Kim)
Friday September 19th, 2008 3:45:12 AM

Kendry brings the group into the brick building that houses the bell tower. As they ascend the stairs, an accident of architecture allows some words to float to their ears.

"Well, we can provide him a debenture, under the circumstances." The voice is nasal, piercing. "Draw up an indenture, have him sign it. And tell him his ass is ours if he defaults. But he should be good for it. I trust him. So far."

Another voice, deeper, can be heard, but is muffled and hard to distinguish. Then all that can be heard is the sound of the adventurers' own feet climbing the winding staircase.

"Back when the Wold's flora was growing like crazy, some vines almost brought down this clock tower," Kendry comments. "We brought in a fixer to take care of it. Quite a wise dwarf he was. And still is, I presume." He turns briefly to Brother Bertram. "I hope that is not troubling to you."

After passing by two landings, the group finds themselves on the fourth, and top floor of the building. Kendry knocks on the door that was already opened a few inches, and pushes it further open. "Willem - please let his honor know that we are here."

The same deep voice heard earlier answers, now with greater clarity, "Sure, Pipewood." The door now fully opened, those immediately behind the bard see his back stiffen as the hirsuit halfling who just spoke turns his back to enter the next room. "Those people are here, Buff."

Welcome to the Burgomeister's office (Kim)
Friday September 19th, 2008 4:01:02 AM

The furnishings in the first room (20' wide by 15' deep) appear to be of good quality, but are not extravagant. There is a desk with some papers neatly stacked. If you make a spot roll of 15, Highlight to display spoiler: {A crumpled paper lies in a wastebin next to the desk - it looks like it has some words at the top, and a large inkblot in the center.}

"Send them in, then, send them in," instructs the nasal voice.

"Yeah, you can come in," Willem says as he comes out of the next office. He moves to sit behind the desk. He looks the group over, glancing at some faces, but focused more on the various bits of unusual clothing, the weapons. He picks up a corncob pipe and sticks it in his mouth, unlit, as he continues taking in those who are passing before him. "Hey - no monster lions in the office! I ain't gonna clean up no crap!"

Kendry pauses at these words as he is about to lead the group into the main office. He holds up a hand to indicate folks should wait. He moves to stand before the desk. "Willem Pastna Berrygobble. You. Will. Treat. These. Ladies. And. Gentlemen. With. Respect." He grabs the corncob pipe out of Willem's mouth. "And the lion stays with Gunther." He slams the pipe down on the desk for emphasis, scattering the spent tobacco.

Willem's eyes widen, then narrow, then widen again. "Yes, Mister Pipewood," he mumbles, staring at his pipe. His eyebrow furrows as he picks up a piece of paper to carefully clean up the tobacco bits.

Kendry turns and walks into the main office, gesturing for all to come with him.

Finally, the Burgomeister (Kim)
Friday September 19th, 2008 4:40:58 AM

This room is 30' wide, almost 40' deep, but in the far left is a 10' by 10' room walled off, with a door. There are windows to the left and right. Bookshelves and scroll shelves fill up the far right corner. An astrolabe sits on a table next to a model of the sun, the planets and moons. Assorted pipes rest in a circular pipeholder on a small shelf next to the Burgomeister's desk. Some fine paintings hang on the walls. Next to another pipe sits a nicely framed pen and ink sketch representing of a group of halfling adventurers battling a manticore.

"Ah, the Emerald Dragoons. Welcome to Crescent Valley," says the man with the nasal voice.

"Your honor, Burgomeister Buffo D'oro Twigrumpler, you are correct, these are the Emerald Dragons," Kendry says. "You have heard of their long fight for freedom and justice in and around the Culverwood, and of their defeat of the tyrant dragon.

"The estimable K'Nara Illutu leads this group with honor and distinction. She is a bladesinger. Ingrge Nightseer is a powerful master of weapons and magic. Lian Siannodel a monk of discipline and power. Gunther, a seasoned fighter and - this is his cat, Delilah. Falin Darkshine is an unparallel archer. Athalorn, a master of nature. Aeralia a servant of Flower, and mistress of song and magic. And Brother Bertram is a priest of Domi and of Gargul himself.

"Emerald Dragons, this is our new..."

Kendry's words are cut off. "Yes, yes, thank you for coming. For answering my invitation. Have been very busy, you see. Calfast gone, and me appointed. Er, elected. You may call me, well, I suppose, Burgomeister D'oro Twigrumpler. Or Burgomeister Buffo? I am new to this, you see. Well, sit down, sit down."

There are small benches, small chairs, and a couple of tables available. The chairs are too small. The benches might work for a few. But it's obvious that, unless the floor is used, the seating is not adequate to the guests.

"Oh, well, sit or stand, I suppose. So, there's Trouble. Right here in Crescent Valley. And that starts with T and that rhymes with P and that stands for Pool. You see, we have pools of water - flooding - over just north of Hovel to the east. And other things."

Falin  d20+19=21 ; d20+19=37 ;
Friday September 19th, 2008 9:02:05 AM

DMHighlight to display spoiler: {I made the spot check with a 19 and rolled again to see if I could make out the words rolled a 37}

Falin enters and makes a quick bow when introduced. He looks the room around and decides to take a knee instead of sitting or standing. He listens to the tale.

Athalorn  d20+25=35 ; d20+8=28 ;
Friday September 19th, 2008 12:44:01 PM

Athalorn smiles as Kendry asserts himself over Delilah's presence. He then follows politely and listens very carefully to the new Burgomeister, paying particular attention to the tone and expression of his voice in an attempt to discern any untruths or anxieties. (Sense Motive 28 (natural 20))

"Trouble? Floods? Other things? Though we are happy to help, floods are usually a natural phenomenon and we will not interfere. Is there something causing these that worries you? And what are these other things?" Athalorn's tone is not abrupt, but shows no evidence of social grace or pleasantries.

Spot 35 for the paper

Lian
Friday September 19th, 2008 4:16:38 PM

Lian shakes his head trying to keep up with the Burgomeister and his run away tongue. The hand of Domi remains standing however. "Yes, isn't flooding normal this time of year, considering the hills and valley. I would figure, as a farming community, you might be used to it and even have ways to avoid it?"

Gunther, Charm Animal  d20+3=16 ;
Friday September 19th, 2008 11:17:55 PM

Spotting the piece of paper, Gunther gives it the briefest glance, though the written word never really was all that interesting to him. (Spot=16) Gunther chuckles a bit at the exchange between Willem and Kendry and smiles. "Dere is no need to vorry...I have her very well trained in dat aspect." The warrior looks at Willem, a twinkle of mischief in his blue eyes. "Personally, I'd be more vorried about her eating you.... Ve've been vorking on dat part of her training, but I vouldn't say ve've mastered it yet." As if on cue, the huge lion lets out an enormous yawn which displays her razor sharp teeth.

Gunther tries to listen to the Burgomeister, but his nasally voice is more than a little distracting. In order to avoid staring at the strange, but powerful halfling, Gunther resorts to absently stroking Delilah while allowing his mind to wander.

Brother Bertram
Saturday September 20th, 2008 7:19:12 AM

(OOC Just to let everyone know, Bert has been without power all week, due to the only hurricane to ever hit Ohio that I am aware of. I should be ok from here on.)

Burgomeister Buffo (Kim)
Monday September 22nd, 2008 4:23:24 AM

"Well, also mosquitos. But not normal floodings. But that's not all," Buffo adds in a conspiratorial voice. "There have been giant spottings. On four separate occasions, at last report."

He looks from side to side, as though trying to see if anyone else might be listening. "You see. You see. We have ... these things to protect us. And, that is, er, no giants are SUPPOSED to get past them. So, at the first report or two, well... you see, right?" He raises his eyebrows looking for agreement, adds, "But after four!?" then squinches his eyes as he offers a jolly closed-lip smile, figuring that all is now clear as crystal.

Again he glances about, and this time over his shoulder. "So, that's that. Oh, and of course, thank you for coming to my inauguration." He taps a little metal bar with a small metal hammer he pulls from a drawer. Then he giggles as it chimes with high pitched reverberation. [Make a save versus constitution for Delilah, DC 12, to determine whether some of the ultrahigh frequencies serve to irritate the dire lion.]

Something that sounds like a tinny version of Willem's voice can be heard coming out of Buffo's desk.

"Yes, Willem," the burgomeister says, speaking clearly into a cup of quills resting on his desk. "Now, have the honor guard escort our guests to their seats for the ceremony."

He rises, with a slight nod of his head in what looks to be a 'thank you and you may now go' gesture. "We shall rejoin you soon."

For those who succeeded at their spot check of the waste basket, Highlight to display spoiler: {The letter, addressed to 'Lilly Rose Spotfinder Thornbush, Florist,' indicates that the quantity of floral decorations for the inaugural ceremony should be trebled, and, for her trouble, she will be paid four times the amount for the initial order, 'to cover the 200% increase in flowers, and additional trouble for your time.' The letter likely was discarded due to the huge ink stain right about where the signature should go.}

Lian
Monday September 22nd, 2008 11:16:39 AM

Lian looks around the group with confusion, however refrains from making a rude comment. "Um, thank you for your wonderful... perspective mister burgomeister. What was it you did before this... appointment?"

Burgomeister Buffo (Kim)
Monday September 22nd, 2008 11:57:25 AM

"Ah, yes. I am a financier, good fellow. A financier," the ruling halfling answers Liam. "Good head for numbers, you see."

Athalorn
Monday September 22nd, 2008 12:54:21 PM

Athalorn furrows his brow at the halfing's strange manner. An irritating fellow, but not one worthy of the shifter's time or impatience. He waits to be 'escorted' from the room.

Falin
Monday September 22nd, 2008 3:55:57 PM

Once outside Falin leans over to Lian and whispers, "He was a finacier and he was going to pay the florist 200% more for 3 times the order? Doesn't make any sense to me. Neither does his description of what is going on around here. Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up."

Kendry (Kim)
Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 4:54:56 AM

"Right," Kendry says. "Thank you, your honor."

He turns and heads out the room, out the next room. He will wait briefly in case any others have last minute questions for Buffo. If not, then he leads the way back down the stairs. Whoever follows close behind him may notice him shaking his head from side to side for a moment during his descent. Just before he reaches the bottom, he sighs.

"Very well. Your escort should await without." He opens the door. It is a tall door for halflings, but anyone over six feet or so may have to stoop a bit.

Honor Guard (Kim)
Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 5:14:56 AM

The honor guard awaits just outside the door of the clock tower. It consists of members of the militia. To the left, facing the door in a line, are five fairly rotund halfling men, and to the right five reasonably fit-looking halfling men. They are lead by a halfling woman, handsome of face she is, though in her middle years, and with a countenance that looks to brook no nonsense.

"Harrright face. Harright face. Hands to pommels. Chins up." Those under her charge snap to, looking remarkably well drilled. Mustacheless beards are worn by each, though on the youngest the beard is wispy.

She looks to the party members. "Commander Marigold Pipewood, at your service, Emerald Dragons. We shall now escort you to the assembly. Which one of you is to give the speech?" she asks directly.

After that matter is attended to, she leads the way, walking point and her men fanned out behind her much as geese fly in a V-formation.

Aeralia  d20=10 ;
Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 11:15:10 AM

Aeralia remains fairly silent as they are lead to the Burgomeister, though gives a flourish curtsy and warm smile in greeting as she is introduced. Her silence continues as she listens to the Burgomeister vaguely explain the troubles plaguing his lands, doing her best to make sense of it.

She doesn't seem to take notice to the paper in the wastebasket.(Spot Check: 10)

"Speech?" Aeralia smirks slightly, looking towards the other Emeralds. A bit lower, speaking to K'Nara, "I suppose I can whip something up, unless you want to speak, K'Nara."

Lian
Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 12:27:31 PM

Lian looks at Falin. "Politicians don't make good financial decisions Brother Falin. But I believe he was referring to flowers and not to money. Why, where did you hear about the flowers anyway?"

Athalorn
Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 1:16:52 PM

"Speech?" He gestures, alarmed, at K'Nara and Aeralia. "Ladies? I believe this may be your department."

He is more concerned with this halfling. Something didn't seem quite right....

Commanding presence! (DM JayB)
Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 5:26:41 PM

Commander Marigold Pipewood looks at the group expectantly and with some impatience as if you were ready for the speech and may even have one written. Her face slackens.
"Buffo or Kendry didn't mention a speech ah? Oh well. You are the Emerald Dragons. You can... wing it." She chortles, as do several guards, at her obvious joke.

Ingrge: AC 28, HP102/102, stoneskin 70/70, SR 18, freedom of movement, Bull's strength
Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 8:26:12 PM

Ingrge looks a bit pale as the word speech is made. and then he looks back over his shoulder as they leave sir huffle puff behind. Looking at Commander Pipewood for a moment he cocks his head to one side and asks the question that has been bothering him for the last few minutes.

"Just How did your new Burgermeister get appoint... elected?"

Gunther, Charm Animal
Tuesday September 23rd, 2008 11:16:47 PM

Gunther looks around mildly paranoid. "Don't look at me!!" he says accusingly. "ingrge's de von for de speeches!"

Falin
Wednesday September 24th, 2008 11:37:09 AM

Falin continues with Lian, "It was on the handwritten note in the trashcan. Just found it odd that his last job was with money, the last guy in charge was removed for money issues, and now this guy is offering way too much money for a flowers order. I wonder what the current guys was a finacier of, who did he work for?"

Falin heas about the speech, "Oh I don't know Gunther. It would give you a chance to work on your people skills." He says with a grin and a wink.

Lian
Wednesday September 24th, 2008 8:25:26 PM

"Money confuses many people. They say its the root of evil... which is likely true."

By all that is good and.... WOW thats a big halfling! (DM Jay)
Thursday September 25th, 2008 7:17:22 PM

Knara pipes up. "I think Aeralia is fully capable, if she's willing to, give the speech." Says the red-head. "I have given my fair share of speeches as the leader of the Emeralds." She almost looks relieved.

Commander Marigold Pipewood claps her gloved hands together and says, "Wonderful! Thats settled, now lets talk about attire!" She grabs Lian's grey clad arm and groans. "Grey, with those beautiful eyes lad! Blue SHOULD be your color." She shrugs. "But if this is all you have, we should be able to accomidate you." She looks at Gunther. "You don't take off that armor often do you Friend Gunther?"

"But all too late. The party is in just under an hour. We are escorting you to a table situated near the stage and potium. You'll be sitting with Buffo and his...." Her voice dies to a sigh and then a whistle as you round a corner into a courtyard. She looks up at a grand sight. A statue of pure copper and silver has been errected in the middle of the court yard. This statue is unmistakably Buffo, which stands easily nine feet in height. There are about a dozen halflings doting over the polishing of this grotesque achievement. Commander Marigold Pipewood slaps her forehead. "I hope thats a gift or donation and NOT a purchase." The statues eyes gleam green in the twilght.

Lian
Thursday September 25th, 2008 7:19:15 PM

Lian looks at himself and then at the commander, almost hurt by the statement. Leaning toward Aeri, "But grey is neutral... my mom always said neutral was my color."

Gunther, Charm Animal
Friday September 26th, 2008 12:45:09 AM

Gunther looks at the Commander. "Errr...ummm. Vell, I do sometimes." The warrior flushes. "I didn't know vat to expect... You're not going to make me vere fancy clothes are you?!" The warrior casts about nervously until he catches sight of the statue. "Vat in de name of all dat is goot is....dat....ting?"

Athalorn
Friday September 26th, 2008 2:05:33 AM

Athalorn sighs and rolls his eyes at the sight of the statue. "This asbsurd. This irritating halfling is throwing money around like it grew on trees. How in the Wold did he come to his position? Perhaps our job here is to get rid of this fellow for you."

The shifter is clearly losing patience with this place and this Burgomeister.

Falin
Friday September 26th, 2008 10:54:55 AM

Falin leans in towards Lian again, "Not good with money and now he has a giant statue of himself made. I wonder if this guy had a hnad in the last guy leaving."

"Commander Pipewood," says Falin, I lvoe the floral decorations. I was wondering who was responsible. I have been thinking of taking up floral arranging and would like to meet with them while we wait. Thanks."

Lian
Friday September 26th, 2008 2:51:47 PM

"Not good with money. Not great with people. No clue about simple intelligence. No head for the farmers I assume." He shrugs. "I don't think its so much ridding this valley of him, but finding out how he may have been placed here. I also think this stuff up north is legit. Why invite us here if there was no real problem? I think that is the most important thing here. Floods, pests and an influx of giants who shouldn't be around seems more important than some slimey politician. Besides, we took care of Parnoth and have our thumb on Mop, how hard would it be to displace a crooked halfling mayor?"

Well well well.... (DM Post)
Friday September 26th, 2008 3:01:46 PM

The commander looks puzzled at the suspicion floating around the group and smiles. "You ARE good at your jobs!" She looks at Falin, confused and then at Gunther when he speaks. "Fancy duds? Nope, not unless you want too. I think we can find something in your size." She signals for a young halfling female prancing by. "Suz, can you get measurements from mister Gunther here, and anyone else who would like it, and fit them for fancy clothes... better make it green for all."

Suz looks excited. "Super! Be right back." She runs off.

"She DOES enjoy her job!" The commander smiles widely.

The commander rocks on her toes, hands behind her back, looking up at the statue. "OH! There's a plaque." She reads.

"That is interesting."

When Lian speaks, she looks over her shoulder. "Quite right master Lian."

Aeralia
Saturday September 27th, 2008 1:26:05 AM

"Now, now, gentlemen," Aeralia says, glancing amongst the other Emeralds with a small smile. "Lets not be making assumptions and accusations based on a few tidbits of information. Just because he seems to have no sense of...anything really...doesn't mean he has done anything crooked or sinister. He is the legitimate authority still, and deserves the respect of that position."

The raven-haired sorceress looks over the gathered halflings briefly, her smile still shining. She tugs at her teal skirt lightly, glancing around at the others when fitting for fancy garb is mentioned. "I think this should be good enough for me," she comments, quickly scanning over her own clothes. "I assume well be off to investigate shortly after this ceremony is done, may as well stay prepared."

Aeralia offers Lian a sweet smile when he mentions his affinity for grey and neutrality. "I know you wouldn't have it any other way, Lian. But I think she's right. You'd be quite spectacular in a nice shade of blue...," trailing off, she offers the elven monk a playful nudge, and a warm grin.

Gunther, Charm Animal
Monday September 29th, 2008 12:00:03 AM

A little reassured by the idea of not having to wear "fancy duds", Gunther patiently allows the measurements to be taken. Still, he's more than a little curious what the party will be like...and why it is again that the halflings even invited them in the first place.

Athalorn
Monday September 29th, 2008 1:59:52 AM

The shifter waits for the speech to be over. Why is there always these formalities to deal with? And he shares Gunther's curiosity as to their presence in this place.

ITS COMING.... (DM Post)
Monday September 29th, 2008 11:32:17 AM

Ingrge's ring chirps to life. His wife's voice chimes, "Dearest, the baby is coming." The ring then dies.

The female commander looks as if she was hit in the face, then beams. "Your wife is having a baby!? Wonderful! I'll make the excuses for your absence. Please, go and be blessed."

K'Nara hugs the weaponmage and then pushes him. "Go, we'll do our duty! You do yours!"

Music begins. Crowds flood into the courtyard. Wait staff flow from the out buildings and the party begins. Soon the yard is filled with groups of familiar and unfamiliar people. A group of battle hardened folk look your way and nod. A mass of dwarf flesh shambles, grunts, some excuse themselves. Flowers everywhere. Color. Streamers. Its almost to much to take in all at once. A wooden dance floor seems to appear and people make their way onto it.

Commander Marigold Pipewood looks at Gunther. "Looks like your safe for now Master Gunther. Looks like Suz got snatched up for a dance." She points. The young halfling girl sent to ready the fancy clothes is red faced and is dancing rather vigorously with a somewhat taller halfling.

"I really should go do my job. Please excuse me." Commander Marigold Pipewood leaves the group alone for the time being.

There is a punch table and snacks nearby. Tables are set around the perimeter and seem to have large signs posted on them. The nearest one to you belongs to the dwarves who passed and the next one is set up for somewhat larger folks. The sign reads, reserved.

Gunther grins as Ingrge disappears. "A baby! I didn't even know dey vere vith child!!" Many busy, busy thoughts fill the warrior's head about which big cat he will train up to be the child's companion. He wanders over to Athalorn and sips at the punch. "Athalorn, do you tink Thaeri vould be a goot friend for de new baby or do you tink she's too violent? Maybe I should go out and get von of dose stakers dat K'nara vas telling me about...den it could guide de child ven it vanders in Culdervood." Gunther taps his chin thoughtfully. It's obvious that he's thrilled about the prospect of Ingrge's new child.

Falin
Wednesday October 1st, 2008 10:00:34 AM

Falin looks for a minute and then at the other Emeralds and smiles, "Did I just get blown off?" He says to no one in particular. Falin follows Athalorn over to the punch bowl and gets a cup full. Turning, he glances over the area and smiles watching the festivities. Falin turns to Athalorn and says, "It is nice to see innocence such as this. Makes me feel like we actually have a purpose, to protect this innocence."

Turning to Gunther, he continues. "Thaeri would be fine with the new baby. She is a good creature, and knows the difference between danger and innocence. If you like I can spend some time with her before introducing her to our newest Dragon."

K'Nara
Thursday October 2nd, 2008 3:41:23 PM

OOC: My MOST humble apologies--between having to move out of a house and into a 2BR apartment, job woes, and having NO internet access, I've been subjected to a trying few weeks. However, I am back now and will attempt to remain timely.

K'Nara sighs as Ingrge hurries back to Caeryn's side.

"Elven females don't present their pregnancies as prominently as humans or orcs," the redheaded blade singer explains, "So that's why we didn't have a clue." She chuckles at the thought of going home to Emerald Castle and hearing the pitter-patter of little feet. Then K'Nara firmly returns to the events at hand.

"I have to agree with the way things seem to be adding up..." the leader of the Emerald Dragons says in low voice, "...this new Burgomeister appears to be...less than ideal for Angel Springs. Hopefully the people here will see him for what he is and vote him out as soon as they can." The chestnut-maned woman looks down at the clean brown-and-green outfit she has on over her breastplate.

"I daresay we're presentable." K'Nara confirms, then gives Aeralia a wink. "You still up for giving a speech? Last time I tried it, the audience was rather...underwhelmed."

Party (DM POST)
Thursday October 2nd, 2008 8:28:46 PM

As the party heats up, the Burgomeister finally arrives an hour later, now about 7pm as the sun begins setting, and takes his seat with an array of well off halfling townsfolk. He then notices the statue, stands up laboriously and walks over to his copper and silver doppleganger. He says with a grand voice to no one particular, "I think I'm much better looking!" He laughs, tucks his thumbs into his tweed vest pockets and returns to his seat.
The band picks up the pace. More food is brought out. Drinks. The dwarves are VERY happy now after a solid hour drinking their fill.

Then everything goes quiet. A trio of drow, two males led by a female, makes their way toward the Burgomeister, from the shadows. He rises and reaches out a hand. The female removes her smoky colored spectacles and smiles a kind greeting and extends her hand. They shake and the Burgomeister himself shows the drow to their table. Buffo struggles with her chair as she takes a seat. He kisses her hand and returns to his.

There are a battalion of halflings preparing a dais for speechs. They place a green cloth over the potium and you all see seal of the Emerald Kingdom upon it. You soon realize that, given the position of your table in relation to the Burgomeiter's, you must be the most highly anticipated guests.

Falin
Friday October 3rd, 2008 10:24:53 AM

Falin makes his way with his newly acquired drink to the table and finds his place. Falin watches the drow entourage enter and he watches their actions as they take their seats, noting the woman must be in charge. Inwardly he wishes he knew more about the formalities with drow. If he makes eye contact with any of them he will nod and smile towards them.

He watches the halflings scurry about getting everything set up for the speeches. Falin looks at the darkening sky and hopes that this does not drag on late into the evening.

Halfling dance music is lively enough so that even Gunther can stomp around to it, so K'Nara grabs the cat trainer and hustles him onto the dance floor.

"This makes for a nice change of pace from having to risk life and limb all the time, don't you think, Gunther...?" K'Nara asks the man in her arms, her hazel eyes twinkling with humor.

Gunther, Charm Animal
Monday October 6th, 2008 11:06:13 PM

As he is being whisked around by K'nara, Gunther can't help but eye the halfling seamstress who was supposed to be "fixing" his wardrobe. "Umm...yeah...nice change of pace. At least I don't have to make de speech!!" Still, K'nara's nearness has it's usual effect of calming the warrior, and he snuggles in and enjoys the down time. Even though his spell is still active, the warrior watches his lion carefully, lest she decide to make an evening snack of one of the halflings!

K'Nara

Aeralia smiles widely as Lian takes her hand, and allows herself to be dragged to the dance floor. Caught up in the moment, she hardly hears Lian's question of the music, though eventually responds,"Oh yes, its very nice, Lian."

Seeing the dias being prepared, Aeralia enjoys the last bit of dancing, knowing that they'd likely be called to their seats soon, and mentally prepares herself for her speech. The young sorceress is quite skillful and light on her feat, even though she'd never had any real formal training in dancing. (Perform: Dance check 32)

Dancing and dealing... (DM Post)
Tuesday October 7th, 2008 7:52:52 PM

As the dancing continues, it is clear to everyone that Aeralia has some experience, while her partner is not quite as practiced as the sorceress. Both seem to be trying to lead the other.

Knara and Gunther also take to the dance floor, however, the red head is leading.

Falin is sitting, minding his own business, when the drow female approaches him. "Would you like to dance?" She is quite lovely and has a calming aura about her. Her companions look on, but look anything but concerned about her choice, in fact, one of them invites a female halfling onto the floor while the other helps himself to the ample supply of hard cider.

The tipsy dwarves have taken to a card game, seeming invented by a couple of halfling youths, who seem to be winning.

Athalorn feels a sudden pang in his gut which resembles fear, but not his own. Glannath has seen something that has caused great panick.

Bertram moves out of the courtyard and disappears into the night, a solemn look in his eyes as he looks upon his friends. The dwarven cleric of Domi and Gargul slips away without a word.

The music stops after awhile, everyone moves back to their seats and Kendry steps on stage. "Please, please, can I have your attention. Have enough to eat? Good, good. Well, here from House Bralfah, Lady Starmoon." The drow female steps on stage.

"Hello, and thanks for the kind reception. As long as I have known Buffo... hello Buffakins." She waves to the Burgomeister. "... I have known him to be a honest and kind man. I know what you all may have heard and I have to admit, for a loved member of office, like Calfast, to have been accused as he was, it is natural to suspect the successor of foul dealings. But please, Burgomeister Twigrumpler has only been in office a short time. I am sure, given opportunity, you all will see in him what I have. Thank you." She leaves stage to a smattering of polite applause.

Kendry returns to stage and introduces the dwarf delegation, who seem completely unconcerned about speeches. "Fellows?" Kendry waits for a minute and no one from the dwarves reponds. "Well, perhaps we will have better luck getting a speech from the delegation from the Culverwood, the Emerald Dragons. Ladies. Gentlemen?" He gestures to you all. There is some laughter and louder applause.

Your on Aeralia! Make it good, or halflings will riot and thats an ugly thing to behold! ;)

Athalorn looks up to the skies, trying to find what has caused his old companion such panic. He whispers to Gunther, hoping his words have not been heard by anyone else. "Trouble. I'll go take a look."

He makes his apologies and leaves the party and, once behind the nearest building, changes into eagle form once more, taking to the skies in search of Glannath. He is always watching, always looking for any signs of danger.

K'Nara hears the druid, as she is with Gunther at the time Athalorn informs the cat trainer of his intent.

"Use your ring." The leader of the Emerald Dragons reminds him of the magic item that all the group members possess, surreptitiously switching out her Ring of Wizardry for her own Ring of Communication. To the public eye, however, she nods and smiles at Starmoon's speech and politely claps when Aeralia is introduced as the next speaker.

The young sorceress smiles warmly as Kendry motions to the Emeralds table, standing gracefully, and moving towards the stage. She smiles warmly and pauses for a brief moment, looking over the crowd, before beginning to speak in a strong, yet warm and caring tone.

"Many thanks, and our humblest gratitude to be allowed to share this day with you all," The young Emerald starts, "We certainly appreciate the opportunity to relax a little and enjoy fine company such as yourselves, we don't get such a chance very often."

"First, although I've not the chance to know Burgomeister Twigrumpler before his appointment, as Lady Starmoon has, I'd like to welcome the Burgomeister into his new position on behalf of the Emerald Kingdom, and that we certainly look forward to Cresent Valley and the Emerald Kingdom's peaceful co-existance under his watch."

"While the circumstances of his appointment, and the action of the previous Burgomeister, are rather unfortunate, all must give this new leader a chance to prove himself; let his own actions speak for themselves, instead of judging on rumor and non-supported suspicision." Aeralia clears her throat briefly, before continuing.

"We'd further like to state that we are happy to be here and supporting the Burgomeister's transition into office, and graciously accept his request for aid in investigating any issues that may arise. I like to think the Emerald Dragons are a symbol of hope, truth, and justice, and we are proud that we can assist the Cresent Valley in their pursuit of those things. To strive and obtain these ideals is not an easy road, but with dedication, trust, and good friends, these concepts will endure any hardship."

Turning and looking to the new Burgomeister, "May all of these ideals be at the foundation of your position, Burgomeister, for the embetterment of Angel Springs, and Cresent Valley as a whole."

After the dance he says, "It has been decades since I last danced. Thank you my lady." He bows and returns to his seat.

Falin keeps an eye out while the speakers take the dias, although, he has a hard time paying attention to anything other than Lady Starmoon while she speaks.

He does however notice the two empty seats at their table and begins to scan the area looking for them.

Wednesday October 8th, 2008 6:21:28 PM

Once the Emerald's speaker is done, no one else can match the applause or elegance of Aeralia's words. Hers was the most impressive by far.

Glannath and Athalorn glide up, updrafts in abundance here in the valley. Athaorn only Highlight to display spoiler: {You head off toward the air space Glannath indicates and you see nothing. However, in the distance, there are lights, hundreds, clearly seen on the sides of the mountains to the north. Glannath, however, has no feelings about the orange lights, it was something else. There is a linger anxiety about being in the spot. Every dark shape or cloud makes Glannath fearful.}

Falin has no trouble figuring out who is missing from the table. Bertram. And Athalorn. He watches the Lady Starmoon for a time. She only glances your direction once for the rest of the night, but she may have been looking at Buffo when he came around to shake hands with EVERYONE. He didn't want to see any guests off without thanking them personally.

Lian claps.

Knara suggests the use of the Ring to Athalorn as he leaves.

The party begins to break up. The Burgomeister lingers with the drow. He give Lady Starmoon a kiss on the cheek and bids her good night. Finally he approaches the Emeralds.

"Thank you ever so much!" He looks at Aeralia. "Young lady! Can I call on you for OTHER functions? I'd be happy to pay you. Your a wonderful speaker and easy on the eyes!" He chortles, then grows a comical anksty look and addresses Falin. He puts his bejeweled hands on his his hips. "My fine elf! I hope you don't have designs on my fiancee, I will have to duel you." He winks. "I saw you dancing with her." He can't hold his smirk in much longer.

The dwarves are unconcious now and the halfling youths are long gone.

The Burgomeister continues. "Well, have you any ideas as to how your going to proceed tomorrow? With, well, you know. The stuff we talked..." He stops. "...nevermind. I have drank a bit too much, I can't remember much and likely won't be of help in the morning. Goodness! Its onto midnight already!" He hurries off, without a word more. The halfling isn't heading in the direction of the mayor's mansion, but out, into the night.

Corrections and communications... (DM Jay B)
Wednesday October 15th, 2008 5:18:59 PM

Pre-module wrap up...
Maab gets egg. Mop is doing well with the kingdom. The orcs agreements are proceeding slowly in regards to the trade road pact. And you had down time. Gunther sees heavy clouds in the direction of the Crascent Valley.

(Admittedly, Kim's posts were most informative. He tweaked the module a bit.)

So, the module thus far is as follows...
-You were invited to see the swearing in of the new Crescent Valley Burgomeister, Buffo D'oro Twigrumpler, and a request to look into some strange rumors north of Angel Springs if you get a chance while your there.
-On approach to the valley you discover a strange slightly magical haze fading away.
-When you land in the valley you meet Mungo (with glittering brilliant blue eyes), a very unusual and apparently magical halfling who guided you to where you needed to go.
-Mungo introduces you to Kendry, your attache, who shows you around for a time, while telling you his family history and how it relates to the three villages.
-Kendry mentions Mungo's bookstore, Hardbottle's books, just five doors down from the Dozey Donkey tavern. He also mentions Mungo's wealth of knowledge.

-Kendry mentions...."Buffo D'oro Twigrumpler has been in office for half a fortnight. I don't know what you may have heard, but his predecessor, Calfast Rowgold Tunnelly, who, I believe served our valley with honor and a good heart, has been accused and convicted of misappropriating funds. Now, it may not do to gainsay a judge's decision, but I find it very difficult to believe that time and further consideration will uphold that judgment.
"Be that as it may, and for whatever reason, his honor, our new Burgomeister, has indicated he wishes to see to the welfare of the community - of Angel Springs our city, and the town of Humble's Ford, and the hamlet called Hovel - and of all of Crescent Valley. As Burgomeister Calfast wished for the development of, uh, 'homegrown' adventurers - and worked with us to ensure that a training branch of the Woldian League of Adventurers be established here," and here the speaker holds for display a WLA pin attached to his tunic, "our new Burgomeister believes that, with the new change in government, it might be well to have some 'outside' adventurers available to help ensure safety from possible threats which can arise during such a time of transition.
"Now, we have many good folk here in our valley. But not all are pure of heart or noble in purpose. I know not what tricks some may try. Now, as well, word has come of some oddities occurring in the northwest area of the valley. The Burgomeister likely will be privy to more information than I have at the moment. But I wish to state that it pleases me, it pleases us, to have such experienced and august adventurers here in our midst at such a time as this.
"It may be that all will be well. And I do not wish to alarm you needlessly. Just know, and here I do speak for others, though not for all - we are very happy to have you here with us.

When Athalorn indicates the group's willingness to help, the halfling appears pleased. "Er, well, perhaps the northeast would be a place to start. That is fairly close to us. Did I say northeast, though, earlier? If so, I meant northwest. Not too far from Hovel."

Kendry Leafwin Pipewood answers Lian, "It is claimed he took funds that were reserved for the care of orphans. Knowing his honor, though, I find those claims preposterous. Nonetheless, many in our valley did not like his support of adventurers and the WLA. 'We don't need such in these parts,'" he says, dropping into a rural drawl. "'Our fathers and their fathers didn't need no 'venturers. We gots the towers what keeps dem giants out, we does. An' a frying pan and rocks is good enuf to handle any wot try to come 'gainst us. Don't need no shiny armor, no pointy swords.'"

-Kendry hands you all a map of the surrounding area. Red Hills is also on the site, but it shows little detail.

For those who succeeded at their spot check of the waste basket, Highlight to display spoiler: {The letter, addressed to 'Lilly Rose Spotfinder Thornbush, Florist,' indicates that the quantity of floral decorations for the inaugural ceremony should be trebled, and, for her trouble, she will be paid four times the amount for the initial order, 'to cover the 200% increase in flowers, and additional trouble for your time.' The letter likely was discarded due to the huge ink stain right about where the signature should go.}

VAGUE CONNECTION TO MUNGO'S EYES AND THE STATUE'S EYES.

Buffo D'oro Twigrumpler
Burgomeister

"That is interesting."

When Lian speaks, she looks over her shoulder. "Quite right master Lian."

Make it good, or halflings will riot and thats an ugly thing to behold! ;)
Added the drow speech because I could see that a few of you were wanting to linger and look into the Burgomeister when the real adventure is OUT THERE elswhere. ;)

The Dragons of the Valley (DM Jay)
Wednesday October 15th, 2008 5:32:07 PM

Just as the Emeralds decide on action, several things happen in concert and in rapid succession.
You gaze between the small buildings and dwellings and see....

A large winged figure soars over Athalorn and Glannath, merely 20ft away, against the night sky toward the hills which Athalorn saw the orange lights glowing.
Now the lights seem to be moving rapidly away from the incoming form.
Athalorn and Glannath are nearly grounded from the vortex created by the creature mere seconds afterward.
Several minutes pass and the side of the hill lights up, revealing a shiny metallic dragon, who's flame has engulfed the hillside.
This is miles away and clearly northeast-ish.

Falin
Wednesday October 15th, 2008 9:15:28 PM

Falin almost falls over from a slight head rush. :)

Falin looks up and sees the creature fly across the night sky. "We have to do something. Maybe we can at least help some of the people just attacked." Falin begins running and activates his cloak. Instantly they become large black feathered wings. Falin leaps into the air and begins flying towards the action.

Lian

The monk unrolls his carpet and flies off beside Falin toward the disturbance.

...will post regardless of players responses, as per Jerry's command. ;)

Athalorn
Thursday October 16th, 2008 2:16:34 PM

Athalorn panics at the feeling of being forced down, but manages to maintain some altitude. He shrieks to Glannath, and the pair then spin round quickly, following the huge shape as it heads towards the hillside. They speed as fast as their small wings will allow, hoping that the others have seen the shape and the fiery burst on the hill. The wind whistles over and under his wings, roaring in his avian ears.

Fire and Flame (DM Jay B)
Thursday October 16th, 2008 6:28:18 PM

OOC: Okay, just after 3pm, I lied. ;) Here goes!

POST:
Athalorn, Falin and Lian only Highlight to display spoiler: {Athalorn and Lian get close enough to notice after a mile or two of flying to tell that what looks to be trees on fire are actually dozens of huge bipeds, some standing and running in circles and several others laying quite still, but all on fire or charred beyond recognition. Falin can see the large winged creature disappear into the darkness at high speeds.
All of the figures seemed to be cutting a swath in the trees, a straight path.
}

Everyone else see the three take flight and disappear, though shapes can be seen in the distance, after quite a few minutes of watching, against the fires on the hillside. Those with low-light can see then pretty well, about two miles away.

Lian
Thursday October 16th, 2008 6:30:02 PM

Into his Emerald ring, Lian describes what they have seen to the others. "Then the beast, whatever it is, has continued on. The creatures lay dying."

K'Nara
Thursday October 16th, 2008 7:07:19 PM

"Athalorn? Lian? Falin?" K'Nara barks into her ring, frowning. "The metallic flying...whats-it...could it have been a dragon?" She turns to Gunther and Aeralia. "We need to get there and find out what happened. Got any magic that can speed us on our way..?" Her last question is primarily addressed to Aeralia, but if Gunther has a magic carpet or the like handy, it would be welvome...

Gunther, Charm Animal
Friday October 17th, 2008 12:14:43 AM

Gunther looks a little befuddled by K'nara's request. "Vell, I can fly...and I could probably carry somevon vith me. Or maybe Delilah could carry somevon on her back. Oder dan dat...I don't tink I can help out." Gunther activates his armor and readies himself to fly after the dragon thing once K'nara gives the order.

Lian
Friday October 17th, 2008 11:07:14 AM

The monk moves down a little more, staying out of the smoke to get a closer look.

DM note
Friday October 17th, 2008 11:08:12 AM

OOC: I will be posting again around 3pm PST. If this is a bad time for anyone, let me know.

Falin  d20+4=15 ;
Friday October 17th, 2008 12:01:31 PM

Falin pulls out a decantur and waits to get closer to activate. If it looks like any good creatures are on fire he will put out the flames from above. If it is a bunch of evil creatures he will let them burn. He will also look to put out any vegitation.

To K'Nara, "Looked like a dragon to me, but can't be sure. And it was metalic looking. Lit a bunch of something on fire. And those somethings are tall."

On the way... (DM Jay)
Friday October 17th, 2008 6:11:40 PM

Knara prepares to be ferried over the trees by Gunther.

Aeralia believes she can get there via magic, easily.

Athalorn, Lian and Falin Highlight to display spoiler: {Athalorn, Lian and Falin can see that, if not stopped, this fire could spread beyond control. The spruce that are on fire are leaking flaming sap onto adjacent trees.

The Shifter and two elves move closer and watch several of the survivors get to their feet. Their companions lay in twisted crispy and charred forms, which seem to be holding axes erect over their own corpses.

There may have been as many as fifty, but now only a dozen or so are moving, and in fact, leaving the scene, moving away from the clearing.

Athalorn can tell, from his basic Knowledge of nature, that they must have been frost giants to have taken that kind of damage. He notices that at least one of the survivors has fatal wounds and will be lucky to make it through the night. Two more are lucky to be standing at all, standing on charred logs they call legs, stiff and brittle.
}

Falin
Friday October 17th, 2008 8:14:17 PM

Falin drops down to above the tree line and calls forth a constant geyser from the elemental plane of water with his decantur of endless water.

"Athalorn... Lian, go and see if there is anything you can do about those attacked. I will work on this fire." yells the elf as he douses the flames as best he can.

(OOC: Falin might want to rethink. I forgot to highlight that info in the text the scouts only... sorry. Please reread the DM post... ~ DM Jay)

Gunther, Charm Animal  d20+3=14 ;
Friday October 17th, 2008 11:28:34 PM

His spell active, Gunther grabs up K'nara and begins flying her toward the area that is on fire. As he flies, he keeps an eye out for any signs of trouble (Spot=14).

Athalorn  d8+1=4 ;
Saturday October 18th, 2008 2:41:08 AM

Athalorn nods at Falin's words, hoping the decanter is sufficent for the task. He swoops down and changes to his human form amongst the wounded giants, and speaks loudly in common. "Strangers, you are wounded, let us help you!" If one of the the injured seems amenable to help, Athalorn will activate the tattoo on his left arm, healing one for 4 damage. If any are still on fire, the shifter will guide his hand towards them, utter his prayer and quench the flames.

(OOC: Athalorn might want to rethink. I forgot to highlight that info in the text the scouts only... sorry. Please reread the DM post... ~ DM Jay)
