The Tragedy of the Undercrats (DM Cayzle)
Thursday September 25th, 2008 12:27:14 AM

The party agrees to the memory erasure. Syr asks about Jonas. Harley suggests that the undercrat is more concerned with machines than people.

The man questioning you flinches at Harley's remark. From within the cowled robe of office he wears, you see that his eyes are shiny, maybe wet. He says softly to Harley, "Talk to me about those affected by the disease when one in three of your friends has succumbed to it. Talk to me about the human cost when you have paid the price of admission." He rolls up the sleeve of his robe, and underneath you see the black marks tracing his veins. He is infected!

When Syr says he wants to move as quickly as possible, the man nods and adds, "I too hope that you will be swift to find a cure."

He adds, in answer to Syr, "Jonas is now the chief among equals of us who remain lucid. We await the election of a new Undercrat, should we survive that long. Until then, Jonas serves, as do we all."

"He came here as a convict, but proved his worth. In this tough time, he has given us the strength and will to go on. He and we all ask for your help."

"Come, I will take you to him now."

OOC: Next post will be the meeting with Jonas. Please note any special preparations with today's post.

Harley (AC 28; HPs 85/85)
Thursday September 25th, 2008 9:43:25 AM

OOC - I would like to ask this man a question before we move on to meet Jonas, if I can.

"Do you know how you became infected?"

"We will do our best to find a cure for you and for everyone else."

Quick Answer for Harley (DM Cayzle)
Thursday September 25th, 2008 10:15:56 AM

The Undercrat shrugs. "We think it passes with a touch -- even a single touch." You will note that he is careful to keep his distance from you.

He smiles slightly when Harley mentions trying to find a cure.

Florin Jadenth AC:23 HP:89/134
Thursday September 25th, 2008 12:42:55 PM

Florin watches what happens and moves foreward and looks to the man, "Do not worry about me, I seem to be immune to this disease." To prove it Florin shows a couple of the battle wounds he still has before looking the black marks over some, "Can the disease be removed by my powers I wonder? I mean I can only do it once in quite awhile but if it can work then there is hope for atleast some people with just that. That in it's own right should be enough to spark hope among the people. However destroying what is causeing this is just as important since the infected that are cured could just become infected again."

Florin thinks before looking to the man and speaks to him more, "I'm sorry, I would like abit more info if you would not mind telling me somethings. Your infected but not like those out there yet. Do these black veins slowly cover you and when they do, you become one of those undead like creatures? Excuse me for calling them creatures too. Some people hesitate when they think they might be killing a friend or a loved one," Florin looks to the man, "If I wasn't a paladin then I too would be infected. I suppose depending on the disease and such it could just take longer to take hold or something, time will tell."

Florin looks to Syr and smiles abit, "I was a major pain in Jonas's backside before parting ways with the group. I wonder if it's a good idea for me to be there. This is a matter where we can't have his anger or anything clouding the issues at hand." Florin shrugs though, really holding no overly ill will towards Jonas, yes Florin was still unhappy about the attack on the orphanage back then, the loss of life but maybe the man has changed atleast some. Florin really couldn't be sure till he did see Jonas again.

Quick Answer for Florin (DM Cayzle)
Thursday September 25th, 2008 1:41:13 PM

When Florin mentions a cure, the Undercrat's eyes get a hungry look -- but the man simply says, "You must do as you see best."

He says that the disease progresses at different rates among different people. There seems to be an asymptomatic early stage in which you are nonetheless contagious. Then it spreads through the veins, taking a day, or more, or maybe a week. When it turns, there is a convulsion, and then the alteration to ravenous, cunning undead.

Then he says that he will take you to Jonas now.

Watching and quiet, the halfling cleric is thinking about the progression of the disease described by the Undercrat. From the sounds of it, Belkior might be personally immune but his companions would not be. Still, his blessings from Alemi might provide them with some hope.

Just then, the Paragon's darts a look at Florin and whoever else was injured by the undead. Should he be checking them for signs of infection?

The Acting Underlord (DM Cayzle)
Friday September 26th, 2008 8:29:57 AM

The party is escorted from the antechamber. You walk single file through narrow low-ceilinged hallways, carved from huge raw blocks. Every once in a while there is a hatch to duck through. Sometimes odd rods or pipes shoot through across the upper reaches of the hallway, forcing you to bend down. From some of those you detect heat, or freezing cold, or a strange thrumming.

It would be easy to feel cramped in here.

Following the infected undercrat, you at last come to an audience chamber, which, while not really big at all, at least seems big and gives you room to stretch and stand side by side. But even this "spacious" 30-by-30 chamber is somewhat cramped -- several cots have been set up on one side, and evidently some undercrats sleep here at night. The cots do look out of place; they are not permanent fixtures.

In another corner there is a desk and a dozen chairs, making a meeting area of sorts. Right now there is only one human behind the desk, working on papers. Two guards stand on either side. As you enter, the man rises and comes around the desk.

That steely face ... the eyes that watched, the hands that murdered orphans. Dealer in bad faith; leader of hoods and ruffians; clever, ruthless, and plotting .... it is Jonas, once of the Anvil Hearts, now an undercrat by all appearances.

Jonas twists his mouth into a smile, and motions you to be seated. As you come closer, you see that the years have not been kind to him. He has aged, more than you have, and the hair under his cowl is shot with silver.

"Ahhh, the so-called Crimson Shields ... of Hope, is it? Let us hope indeed that your name holds some meaning, because it galls me to be forced to hope in the likes of you, old 'friends'!"

"So, the bitter irony of fate reaches out to grab my guts and twist them into knots. And no doubt you are more than pleased to find yourself sent here to help me." He laughs cruelly.

"But hope in you I must, and you are in fact my last hope. The last hope of the undercrats and the Floating City, even maybe. You must be so proud." His voice drips with sarcasm, and it does seem to you that the years have changed Jonas.

The man grins, then. "So, are you ready to serve me? To help rid the city of this plague, and even to find a cure? Shall we work together, setting aside our old grievances for the good of the people of the city? Let bygones be bygones, as we shake hands in comity, if not friendship."

He reaches out a hand, offering to shake.

If you make a Spot check vs DC20, then please Highlight to display spoiler: {you note that the veins on the back of his outstretched hand are traced in black.}

Xenia (AC29, 68/68HP)
Friday September 26th, 2008 11:48:35 AM

"STOP!"

"Don't touch him." The rogue's eyes, bore into the Undercrat with suspicion and loathing. "He's infected. Just lookit his hands."

"I always thought you were bad, Jonas," she continues. "You used people, and you traded casually in their lives. But this is the first time, I've ever thought you a windy ass."

"Talk talk talk talk talk talk talk. Skip your bitter irony of grabbing guts and just tell us what you need."

"And you can ferget your idea of getting one of us infected. We'd fight just as hard to find a cure for you, and everyone else in the city whether one of us was infected or not."

Friday September 26th, 2008 1:08:28 PM

Florin listens to what is said and shakes his head at all of Jonas's words, abit changed, abit the same. He also listens to what Xenia says before glanceing towards Jonas, Florin himself not noticeing anuthing but he believes Xenia, "I agree with Xenia. Are you hopeing maybe one of us would become infected to make us work harder? I would ask how many have you already infected and such too but that at the moment isn't the point. Get on with it Jonas." Florin frowns abit, "I have already been in contact with those out there who are far worse off right now then you are and if my protection from diseases as a paladin happens not to cover me then I too will need a cure or to try and cure myself. We all will surely have to fight more of them before we are through also and from what I seen the disease is easily enough spread and the chanced of no one getting hurt in a battle is slim."

While waiting for Jonas to go on and letting the others talk, Florin thinks and pulls off his gauntlet and undoes the lower arm piece to his armor, he has never had to test his immunity to disease before like now so he isn't sure what to expect really.

(Florin will check out the veins he can see in his wrist and such to make sure everything is clear. This also giveing him an idea if this strange disease can by pass his immunities.)

Friday September 26th, 2008 9:34:12 PM

The halfling cleric doesn't need to duck under any of the pipes that his companions had to avoid. Belkior does, however, try to keep a mental count of how many times his companions bang their heads. Of course, the hatches present obstacles that Belkior has to clamber up and over.

Belkior doesn't notice anything about Jonas' hand and is surprised (slightly) by Xenia's outburst.

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75]
Friday September 26th, 2008 10:34:24 PM

The bard keeps his own countenance, for his own issues were with Specialty Johnson, the second in command of the Anvil Hearts, but he has no trust of Jonas and keep his distance. "Nice pick up, Xenia" he silently compliments the rogue for her observational prowess.

Harley (AC 28; HPs 85/85)  d20+10=15 ;
Saturday September 27th, 2008 2:26:01 PM

Harley had no intention of shaking this Jonas person's hand, even before Xenia pointed out that he is infected with the undead disease. Even though Harley cannot see the start of the disease in the man's hand, he trusts Xenia's ever watchful eyes. Harley didn't know Jonas except through the stories told by his companions. The man's actions confirms that he is a person not to be trusted and perhaps to be eliminated once the undead problem is solved.

Harley leans over and says softly to Belkior, "We should try at all costs not to come in contact with Florin. Even though he is immune to the disease he still may be able to spread it."

Harley keeps his flail and shield at ready.

The Diviner's Tale (DM Cayzle)
Monday September 29th, 2008 11:53:39 PM

Xenia stops anyone from touching Jonas, who grins at Xenia's reaction.

Florin looks at himself but sees no sign of infection. Of course, at this early stage he may be an asymptomatic carrier ... but for now he thinks he has not been infected.

Belkior and Wynn keep alert. Harley whispers to Belkior that maybe no one should touch Florin!

Syr knows Jonas, and the scoundrel's words sets his teeth grating. But he controls himself.

Seeing that he will get no more rise out of the group, Jonas elaborates.

"The undercrats have been pushed out of the areas that allow the most control over the city. With what we retain, we have tried to monitor and control. But those who control the infected area are trying things and discovering how things work. They could destroy the city that way ... would have, but we interfered."

"The Undercrat for Divination has more to report."

He rings a bell, and an elderly undercrat enters. The diviner reveals that a death cult is behind the disease; he knows they are holed up in the machine rooms and they seem to be able to exert control over the undead plague victims, at least those nearby.

The diviner has one more clue: "In dreams I have heard a sound that frightens me." He looks at you, and you see that he has heavy white cataracts. "It is a drumming, a pounding, a ceaseless relentless rhythm." He beats a rhythm crudely on his leg -- two beats close together, then a gap, then two beats, then a gap, and so on.

"What it means I don't know."

"'Kay, I say, what we need is more knowing of what we're up against. Who are these Death Cult folks? Are they from the Undercity? What's their history? Who are the major players? Do they worship Gargul? I mean, what is a Death Cult anyway? What's the fascination for 'em?"

Tuesday September 30th, 2008 6:29:05 PM

Wynn's mind races back to memories of a death cult that was bent on reviving an ancient god named Ahtmalanto. Could the rythmic drumming be the heart beat of this same god? How might he have been awakened when his tomb was still guarded by the cursed spider folk of the surrounding forerst?

"Er.. yes, break up this cult? Any idea what the sound might be?" the bard asks aloud.

Harley (AC 28; HPs 85/85)
Tuesday September 30th, 2008 8:57:18 PM

"Can't you just starve them out? How are they able to get supplies? Are they undead also?"

"Outside of learning the controls to destroy the city, what else could they do if they found out how to run the machines?"

Harley wonders what kind of traps they will run into if this cult is willing to a fixed spot.

Tuesday September 30th, 2008 9:54:23 PM

The halfling cleric cannot think of anything else to ask the undercrat. Belkior does wonder, however, if either he or Harley have asked their deities about this plague.

"Harley, when we get a chance, we should ask our deities for guidance. I, for one, need to ask whether the infected people who have become undead can be cured. That makes a big difference, for me, concerning how I would combat them."

"But I don't know if we will have time to rest."

More To Know (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday October 1st, 2008 5:08:15 PM

Xenia asks a slew of questions. She wants more info on what the party faces.

-- Who are these Death Cult folks? Unknown.

-- Are they from the Undercity? Also unknown.

-- What's their history? The Undercity was overrun by a horde of these undead, who were contained only at great cost. But they had infected many undercrats and guards, and the disease spread to the Trash Level before anyone realized what was going on.

-- Who are the major players? Do they worship Gargul? Unknown, but Gargul hates undead, it is well known.

-- I mean, what is a Death Cult anyway? What's the fascination for 'em? The diviner says that in his vision, he saw the undead creatures bowing before an open grave. The grave was filled with blood. Something horrible -- like a god -- was rising from the grave. That's why he called it a death cult.

-- Oh, and the Machine Rooms. Could we get a map? There are no maps of the undercity. Never. By ancient law and tradition. Noting about the undercity is ever written down, for fear that secrets might escape.

-- Anything delicate that you don't want destroyed? The magical engines are near indestructible. Just don't go disintegrating stuff, and please be careful not to put any machines in an antimagic zone.

Wynn wonders if it could be an old cult god of whom he knows. He thinks the sound is like a beating heart. If anyone makes a Know Religion check 15 or a Bard Lore check 20, then Highlight to display spoiler: {You recall that sometimes Ga'al is represented as a beating heart. But is that a red herring?}

Harley asks about supplies and traps. Jonas smiles. Traps there are, and plenty. It is only with the mechanical magic defenses that the undead were halted. In the area controlled by the death cult, there are traps that could spout fire, or lop off heads, or seal off an area and fill the chamber with acid. All kinds of things like that. But his understanding is that the cultists or undead have not learned how to operate these machines yet. At least, not many.

Jonas gives you each a scarab to put in a pocket. So long as you hold it, the automatic defenses should ignore you. PLEASE do not lose them, and they MUST be returned.

Jonas also adds that while the undead in the Trash Level are cunning and savage, they are not planners beyond a mob mentality. The undead in the occupied zone, however, show signs of intelligent guidance, so be wary.

Belkior asks about taking a rest and praying for guidance. Jonas says that each day, more undercrats and Trashlings succumb and become undead. But better for a few to die than for you to be unprepared -- that's a choice for you to make. He adds that the cult is learning more each day about how to operate the mechanisms; so far the undercrats have been able to counter these fumbling attempts to take control. If you want to rest until morning in safety, you will be shown to quarters.

Florin keeps alert. He notes that the diviner is also keeping very alert and is on guard.

Syr also wants a map. Jonas says that he will have one of the undercrats meet with you to give you directions on the way to go, and on possible targets. He mentions that there is a main control room, an engine room, and a few other possible targets. Jonas asks if you would like a guide to acompany you?

"Hellooooo. Jonas? You in there?" The girl rogue plants her hands on her hips and fire an incredulous look at the former Anvil Heart leader. "You thinking? Or your brain already starting to rot out?"

"You got this super secret place where nothing is written down for fear that stuff will get out. *But* all these fake deaders somehow manage to get in to your super secret place and you're not even worried about how they heard about you?"

"Don'cha wanna at least capture a couple of 'em alive to find out? Don'cha even wanna find out how they got in? Have you sent someone 'round to all of the ways in to find out which one they came through or if they came through any of them at all?"

Xenia rolls her eyes and throws up her hands.

"Good thing you called us. Now, you got a place nearby these Machine Rooms where we can set up as a base camp? Someplace near the Rooms, but clear of deaders?"

"I'm thinking we should rest, guys," she turns to the Shields. "I wanna take a quick sneak peak, today first. Then tomorrow we can go in."

Florin listens to what is said and closes his eyes for a moment, calling on his ability to detect evil before looking around once more to see what he may notice. He does watch the Diviner is staying rather alert also and wonders why. Could the man have more info then he is giveing? or is he just weary.

Florin decides to ask the Diviner a question decideing to see what happens, "Sir if I may I was wondering something. In your visions did you get any decent look at these death cult people? Could you tell if there were human or anything else? Maybe even a sense of something. I mean I've heard evil clerics can control undead and I guess some magic users can too. Did you notice holy symbols, anything that might give a clue of what they were." (Gather Info:8

(Knowledge Religion:22)

Florin doesn't like the idea of going up against a unknown enemy, he thinks from the sounds that this death cult is most likely clerics since he isn't sure if a magic user could be immune or have away of keeping the disease at bay, surely the people controling the undead aren't dead or infected themselves but then maube so, some undead do have the power to control underlings. Florin shakes his head and looks to Belkior and the others before voiceing his opinions now, "If I personally had to guess then this cult is being lead by a cleric most likely or a powerful undead. There are few things that can control other undead as underlings. I figure magic users could like they contol their summoned monsters and evil clerics can. I know that vampires can control some undead to do their will also. A magic user though wouldn't be immune or have a way to keep him or her self from being infected though inless the person is nuts that is controlling them I don't see that as being possible. There are alot of ifs here that I don't like."

After a moments thought Florin does add in, "Ga'al's holy symbol can be a beating heart also so that also gives me a thought that clerics are behind this but I just am not sure. They are extreme enough to use heart seeds from my understanding but would they go as far as to spread a disease. The infection and the look of it does look alot like vines or something, maybe it is some new type of heart seed?" Florin frowns and looks towards the other Shields, "It makes sense in alot of ways. I mean, you guys helped some people from Ga'al before, didn't his priests issue orders that were obeyed through the heart seeds? An from the sounds it was mainly those close to his priests that obeyed." Florin frowns now wondering if any of his thoughts might be right, what if these people were trying to resurrect Ga'al or something or raise some other fiend as bad or worse...Florin tries to remember also in his studies if there was anyone like Ga'al, a follower, a deity, underling, etc.

Thursday October 2nd, 2008 9:27:10 AM

"No drinks, Hon. Gotta stay sharp," the rogue thinks back to her very special guy. "I got a bad feeling 'bout this."

"I bet there's lots of hard and complexiflated magic ways for someone to find out about the Undercity and then get lots of these deaders down here. But I can think of one really easy way. They got a traitor down here."

"I mean, think about it. How did the Underlord, who's supposed to be the most pertected guy down here, get the Deader Disease so quick? And who's boss of the Undercity now? It's Jonas!"

Syr shakes his head oblvious to the others in the room besides the Shields, "Guys, I hate to disagree with everyone but isn't TIME of the utmost importance now? What's going to happen to Florin's friends, that nice old couple, if we take another day?" He chops down with his hand to emphasize the point, "Granted, I've been known to leap before looking before so I really think we should proceed with utmost caution but I really fear there may be consequences to waiting. I'm one for going forward... but slowly."

Apologies (DM Cayzle)
Friday October 3rd, 2008 4:44:36 PM

Friends, I apologize. Real life issues (my Dad's cancer, etc) have cut into my time this week. And unfortunately Carl has been too busy as well. I'll post right now, and I will try my best to get five DM posts in next week.

Ga'al's Fingerprints (DM Cayzle)
Friday October 3rd, 2008 5:04:01 PM

Xenia questions Jonas's common sense and incuriosity. He sneers in response. "Yes, I was intending to ask the enemy about that myself. That's my next priority after not dying."

"Yes," he continues, "We can set you up for a spying mission while your friends rest nearby. You'll be wandering almost aimlessly, though, since I can't imagine how you would bring a guide with you on a spy run, and you would be alone were you to face detection, device, or danger. No problem for a smart girl like you, right?"

Florin questions the diviner, who remembers the undead he saw trying to use the machinery of the Float were mostly dressed in rags, and that the cultists who were directing the undead wore red robes with full hoods and masks. That reminds Florin of the vestments that some priests of Ga'al use.

This clicks with Florin's thoughts on Ga'al's beating heart symbol, and the heartseeds. [OOC: Please accept a 350 xp award for cleverness! Well done.]

Belkior gets ready to cast some spells on Xenia in case she goes off on her own. Harley will do the same.

Wynn thinks about what Florin says, and suspects he may be right.

The party consensus seems to be to let Xenia scout, and then rest until morning. But Syr voices a note of urgency. Can the party afford to wait?

Jonas smirks and rings a chime he had in his pocket. "I see you remain a model of efficient planning," he says. Another undercrat enters, likely summoned by the chime. Jonas finishes, "Here, Darples here will tend to you. Well, whatever you decide, do it right! As much as I really hate to admit it, I'm counting on you. Gods help me. And the city is counting on you too."

He turns away, muttering, "We're doomed. Time to write my will out."

[OOC: DM's points to ponder. Will Xenia go out on her own? If so, let's handle that fast off board, with a summary posted. What prep spells will you cast? Or will you listen to Syr and go now?"]

"Yeah, right. Child-Killer-Jonas." The rogue spits the words from her mouth. "Just give us our guide to take us to the same place. We can decide what to do once we get there. Once we see more o' what's out there."

"Someplace where you're not around sucking up all of the good air."

Aura of Courage (Immune to fear and +4 morale bonus to everyone in 10ft against fear effects.)

Florin looks to Syr and nods at his comment, "I agree with moveing but also realize it is best to be prepared also. However that is the choice of the group."

Florin stands and looks to Xenia, "Going alone doesn't sound like a good idea. You may need the power you use to fly at another time considering this situation. I would offer to go scouting with you but seeing as how I'm slower and more noticeable."

Florin is ready to move out when the group is, he looks to Belkior, "If my guess is right I hope you and the rest of us are ready to put foot to some evil cleric's butts."

Xenia (AC29, 68/68HP) - 2nd Post
Sunday October 5th, 2008 9:38:32 AM

Xenia's waiting for the guide to take us to this safe place near the Machine Rooms before discussing this. She's decided not to talk about this in front of Jonas, for reasons that should be pretty clear by now.

Darples (DM Cayzle)
Sunday October 5th, 2008 12:38:43 PM

The undercrat named Darples, a slight fellow who does not say much, brings you all to a 15 by 15 room, once a storeroom, and there are still shelves stocked with tools and jars of oil. There are cots set up too.

"I'll be outside if you need anything," says Darples.

Xenia (AC29, 68/68HP) - 2nd Post
Sunday October 5th, 2008 1:46:31 PM

Xenia puffs a breath out of her cheeks as the door closes behind the Darples guy.

"You know, I didn't want to say this in front of any of them Undercrats, but I think they got a traitor here. I mean, how else do you figure someone put these Deaders down here so easy? How's someone even gonna find out about this place when they don't write nothing down on paper? They even wanna take out *our* memories after, you know? I think it's Jonas," the dark rogue shrugs, "but it could be anybody."

"And I know you wanna go in now, Syr. And I know there are a lotta people dying and getting turned out there while we wait. But also think of what'll happen if we fail? The Overlord said we were their last hope. As much as we wanna save the people in danger, we also gotta save the city, and that means not dying."

"That also goes for scouting. Yeah, it might be dangerous. And thanks for thinking of me, Florin. But if we can get a peek at what might be ahead, the places to go and the places *not* to go, we stand a much better chance of saving everyone. This is something I can do while you're resting. I can bring back knowing that can help you ask your gods what sort of spells you might need. And you know I'm careful. I'm not gonna take any chances."

"So what you say? I go out, I come back, and tomorrow we go in? Tomorrow, I'll even have three more chances to fly again. What do you think?"

OoC: If all are agreed, Xenia will proceed as follows.

1) Ask for a Status spell. Death Ward would be nice too. If there's an Invisibility spell in the group, that would be nice too.

2) Ask Darple to describe directions from the safe room to the Machine Rooms. Also ask for a basic description of the Machine Rooms and where he things it would be best to explore. And ask about any traps that he knows about.

3) Hide and Move Silently; Spot and Listen to the Machine Rooms.

4) In the Machine Rooms use the following procedures

i) At intersections, draw a small arrow on the wall indicating areas already explored.
ii) Before entering doors, activate Blinking. Hide, blink head through door and then back out to take a look/listen.

iii) Active searching for traps.

iv) Continually report back to Wynn the things that she sees.

v) And, against all rules, when she returns, Xenia will do her best to draw a map of her scouting run.

Question: How high are the ceilings in here? What time of day do we figure it is now?

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75]
Sunday October 5th, 2008 5:26:15 PM

Wynn listens to Xenia's reasoning and nods his head in agreement. "I'll cast invisibility on you Xenia if you're ready, but this potion of hide from undead may be of more use. The bard profers the potion and waits for the rogue's agreement before casting his spell.

Belkior - (AC 24 (26 vs. evil); HP 91) - Magic Circle vs. Evil, Purifying Aura
Sunday October 5th, 2008 9:35:08 PM

The halfling cleric listens to Xenia's statements and agrees with her decision to scout now. Belkior prepares to cast some spells on the rogue. But first, he casts another spell to check things within this room.

Belkior casts Detect Magic to determine if there is any magic in the room beyond that carried by his companions. He takes the time to scan the room.

"Here you go, Xenia. I didn't memorize a Status spell, but I can provide the Death Ward. And a cast Hide from Undead that will offer more protection. As well, a Protection from Evil{/i]. How about [i]Dispel Evil, in case you are making a really quick scout ... say, less than 13 rounds."

Belkior will cast all of the above spells, including the Dispel Evil if Xenia wants it.

OoC: Xenia will take everything suggested by Belkior except for Dispel Evil. She explains that she'll likely be gone for much longer than that.

Harley (AC 28; HPs 85/85)
Monday October 6th, 2008 9:26:34 AM

Harley will cast any of these spells on Xenia that she wants:

Shield of Faith (11 minutes)
Detect Evil (110 minutes)
Invisibility Purge (11 minutes)
Death Ward (11 minutes)

Harley hands Xenia something personal so he can track her down with a Locate Object spell if need be.

Syr HP 142 AC 36/35
Monday October 6th, 2008 10:43:57 AM

Syr frowns but goes along with the rest of the group. Once at the room, he looks around with interest grabbing a couple jars of oil and placing them in his pouch, "Never know when these might come in handy." As Xenia is about to leave, he smiles at her, "Be careful out there girl?" Following her outside of the room, he stops at the doorway calling back over his shoulder, "Get some rest guys, I'll take the first watch."

Xenia (AC29, 68/68HP) - 2nd Post
Monday October 6th, 2008 11:11:10 AM

OoC: Xenia accept's Harley's object. She'll take the Detect Evil spell, but when told that it will take concentration to maintain, says something to the effect that a lot of the tasks that she'll need to perform in order to find her way and remain hidden, will probably disrupt her concentration fairly quickly.

Also, note on last Fly spell in boots. If presented by an obstacle that she cannot pass on foot, Xenia will assess whether it is possible or not to fly over it. If it is possible, she'll do so, but time her foray to return within the 5 minute limit of flight.

Hopefully those answer all of the questions necessary to resolve the scouting in a summary. If you need anything else, please post here or email me.

Florin Jadenth AC:23 HP:89/134
Monday October 6th, 2008 10:06:45 PM

Florin nods and waits then, not complaining about Xenia going but he does look to Syr, "Right now I suppose it would be a good idea to be ready over rushing." Florin shrugs not sure himself.

Florin gets ready to relax abit and closes his eyes while waiting and seeing what happens from here, thinking over what has been learned and said so far. Florin does glance at Xenia and nods, "I don't trust Jonas either but not sure if he has anything to do with this current problem. I don't think he is stupid enough to start or help a disease spread that looks like it's uncontrolable."

A Scouting Expedition (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday October 8th, 2008 5:25:36 PM

Xenia first asks Darples for some guidance. He shakes his head and says, "It is hopeless."

"The twists and turns are bad enough, but what with the moving walls, the doors that become walls, the floors that become ceilings, it is impossible to tell anyone how to go. "Right" and "left" lose their meaning."

"Your best guides are your ears and nose. Listen for the rumble of the machines. As you get closer, you will hear them. There is no way to mistake them. When you are close enough, you will hear nothing else, not someone shouting an inch from your ear."

"And if you smell an odd sweet smell, like honey mixed with pee, that is another sign that you are close."

He warns that using chalk or string will not help if doors lock behind you or walls shift. Maybe Xenia has an answer for that, one that she does not share with him?

The scouting expedition goes something like this, if the DM may be allowed a higher level of abstraction.

Xenia is shown to a guarded portal. It opens to a small, four feet by four feet conduit. Darples makes sure that Xenia has her scarab. From there the shadow dancer moves from conduit to conduit, to chamber to passageway, to room and to shaft (the lattermost with rungs for climbing).

To remain aware of where you have been, you must make a Wis check vs DC15 every 10 minutes or end up lost. If you have five or more ranks in Survival, you get a +2 bonus. If you have some way to help you keep track, you may get another bonus. Using chalk to mark the way gives you a +1, for example.

Very soon, like a minute in, Xenia begins to hear the thrumming of distant engines.

How far in does Xenia move? Give me your first few checks for getting lost. What do you do if you see an undead? If you see some creature that is not undead? Any other strategies for not getting lost? Goals? Etc?

NOTE WELL! The Entire Party CAN contribute, thanks to the mental connection between Wynn and Xenia. I'm assuming that Wynn tells all that Xenia thinks to him.

Belkior - (AC 24 (26 vs. evil); HP 91) - Magic Circle vs. Evil, Purifying Aura
Wednesday October 8th, 2008 10:53:05 PM

The halfling cleric watches Wynn as the bard receives information over his link with Xenia.

"Wynn! Tell Xenia to relay her route back to us ... things like 'right - left - straight - doorway', you know. If she doesn't have a way to mark her path, that is. And, maybe, describe what she sees. If nothing else, we can right it down as you relate it to us."

Florin Jadenth AC:23 HP:89/134
Thursday October 9th, 2008 12:30:46 AM

Florin sits back and waits with the others, trying to rest abit while waiting also.

Florin does mention, "Maybe my skill it tracking and such can be of some help out there when we all move out." He also looks to Belkior, "I'm going to get abit of sleep, make sure I'm awake in alittle while please."

Xenia's mind buzzes as she relays her every movement to Wynn. The Undercity is alien and confusing. Behind her, she drags a continual line of chalk on the floor behind her. At every major turn, she leaves a spot of Light upon the wall with her Wand. Echoes of her final words to the Shields reverberate within her head.

"The idea is to bring down the invaders. These Red Ga'alies, right? They're supposed to be around the Machine Rooms. "Soon as I find 'em and get a good scope on what they're like, I'm coming back."

Questions Answered
How far in does Xenia move?
Al: Depends on how bad things get.

Give me your first few checks for getting lost.
Al: Done.

What do you do if you see an undead? If you see some creature that is not undead?
Al: Avoid and observe. If discovered, escape and return. Use last Fly from boots if necessary.

Any other strategies for not getting lost? Goals? Etc?
Al: Mentioned in post.

OoC: Further clarification of goals.

Overall goal is to observe and catalog the obstacles in the way to completing the mission. These would include the shifting walls and such.

1) Observe shifting walls. Try to count how many times they shift within the time Xenia is out. Hope to observe one in the process and see how it happens. If there are any warning signs of a shift.

2) Any groups or individuals of any kind. Observe. Try to figure out what they are and what they do. Also guess as to how far they might roam. Transmit descriptions to the others so they can try to figure this out as well.

3) Map out general layout of the area.

4) Transmit everything back so that, even if Xenia should die or be lost, the information gets back to the Shields.

Gosh this has been a bad week. I really want to apologize. I'g grappling with my Dad and his upcoming lung cancer surgery. We are putting on a family reunion this weekend, before his operation.

Anyway, I want to be upfront with news so no one is in the dark. Carl has bowed out as co-DM due to his own real life worries. We have lost Kent as a DM, and we are closing the Chosen of Domi and Fort Silence games. I was a player in the Chosen, so I am cutting down to one PC only for now. Hopefully that will give me more time to do justice to this game.

Thanks for your understanding.

PS: Working on a turn now.

PPS: Jerry wants the Assistant DM of each game to make a real post each week with an attendance report like we used to do. This will help keep us better on track (especially me!) on a good posting schedule.

You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike (DM Cayzle)
Saturday October 11th, 2008 6:00:38 AM

Xenia sets out. Belkior wants her to relay how she moves (for example, left ... right ... straight ...), and the rogue obliges as best she can ( ... two steps up ... twisting around ,,, through a hatch ... down ten feet ...) and at first the rogue manages to keep track of where she is. ( ... over the pit (which interrupts her chalk line) ... through this one-way door (she finds out that it is a one-way door later) ... into a small chamber (that descends maybe 20 feet after she enters it) ... duck under that big conduit ...)

A couple times, Xenia finds that she crosses her own path, and sees one of her chalk lines, or a light. So she is going in circles, to a degree at least. But she seems to be able to figure out where she is going (Getting lost check 16 is A-OK).

Xenia gets closer to the machine rooms. She sees an undead turning a corner. To the extent that she can judge, it is moving with deep intent, rather than with the unrestrained fury of the fiends Florin fought. It takes maybe 20 minutes of travel, and Xenia gets to a zone where the thrumming of the machines is very loud. Surely the machine rooms lie right behind this door., she guesses.

Meanwhile Harley gets ready to locate her via magic if necessary.

Per the instructions above, Xenia blinks though the door and takes a peek. She sees that the machines still lie ahead! This is just a corridor -- but there is activity here! There are several undead pushing a heavy stone block. And more ...

As she blinks, Xenia enters the Realm of Shadows, and as expected, is able to pass through the door, which becomes grey and permeable to her as she is blinking. But in the Realm of Shadows, that block the undead are moving (with great effort) is not grey -- it glows! And each of the undead is attached to a cord -- a cord that she can see only when she is blinking into the Shadowlands.

The cords all lead off deeper into the undercity, towards the thrumming sound.

And, Xenia discovers, some walls and doors are solid on both planes. Especially the ceilings and floors, and what appear to be weight-bearing posts and columns. Also some of those conduits.

But this is disorienting, to say the least. and Xenia realizes that she has gotten somewhat lost (check 6 is not so good). Syr communicates his faith in Xenia's ability to get out of messes. Florin has gone to take a nap. Xenia has probably just lost her bearings for a moment.

Certainly, she can press on toward the sound of the machine. Or she can head the opposite way, and hope to follow her chalk marks back. She has learned something already ... but is it enough?

Xenia (AC29, 68/68HP)
Saturday October 11th, 2008 10:55:26 AM

OoC: Those rolls should have been 17 and 7 rather than 16 and 6. I forgot to include the +1 you allowed for using the chalk so I added them later. In addition to looking at the numbers in the dice roller, you'll probably need to look at the Rolls and Action section that I include at the bottom of most posts.

BIC:

"Still haven't found the Red Guys yet, Wynn," Xenia thinks back to her guy after relaying all that she's found so far. "Looks like things change from here on. The place looks bigger. The deaders seem to know where they're going."

"I'm gonna follow these glowing rope things and see where they lead. I can move faster than the deaders pushing their block, and I'll use the ropes to lead me back out if I find anything."

"What do the others make of this weird glowy stuff? What do they think the deaders are up to?"

Question: Looks like it's all been narrow tubes and shafts up to this point. Possibly single file type narrow. But the statement that several undead are pushing a block in the direction of the thrumming sound indicates that things open up from here on out. Especially if the undead expect to push the block all the way to the thrumming sound, as it appears they might be.

So, would it be safe for this player to assume that Xenia sees a distinct change in architecture here? From narrow confines to a more open plan?

Yes, Xenia does think that as she gets closer in, she is approaching the machinery room. It is opening up some. Less access hatchy and more roomy. However, this is also where she has lost her way. If she tries to retrace her steps, maybe she will find her way back. If she goes forward, she may likely become completely disoriented.

Monday October 13th, 2008 6:58:19 PM

Wynn reports on Xenia's progress as she travels through the labyrinth of tunnels, crawlways and passages of the undercity. He makes notations as best he can on the back page of his journal, trying to create a map of her movements. Periodically he asks the rogue to identify how far she has travelled and to describe any particular features of the space she is in. When she describes the glowing connections, he asks the others if they might be either a source of sustenance for the undead, or a connection back to a central authority that gives them direction. "Do you suppose that the fact they are visible when Xenia blinks means that the undead are being controlled by some being in the ethereal realm?" he asks the group.

Deeper into Danger (DM Cayzle)
Tuesday October 14th, 2008 12:38:41 AM

Xenia relays what she has discovered so far. The undead are linked by cords to something deeper in -- something that is linked in the Realm of Shadows.

She cannot resist risking losing her way to find out more.

Syr remains alert but does not hear what is going on. Florin, while not as alert, still keeps an ear open.

Wynn speculates that the undead are controlled by an "ethereal" source -- using the archaic term for the real of shadows that few understand or comprehend. The bard knows that it refers to the stuff of shadows.

Harley has no answers. Belkior ponders his divine lore, and says that the Realm of Shadows is Gargul's realm, and he hates undead with a passion. So something, some creature or power, is infringing on Gargul's domain here. And if Gargul finds out, watch out! Who would dare to make such a blatent infringement? The Sons of Dread might pull a stunt like this, and they honored Marteus, god of disease, when he was just a cult god. But in hindsight, no, Marteus keeps the Sons on a short leash since Gargul joined Marteus, and didn't Belkior hear a rumor about the Sons being involved in something else recently?

Maybe if Belkior coudl get a closer look at those cords, he could guess better.

Florin might remind the group that he had deduced it was Ga'al for sure. But what does Ga'al have to do with the Shadows? Nothing, that anyone can recall. Maybe this is a new strategy for the God of Domination.

Now Xenia follows the cords. They all head toward the same central place. To follow them means a lot of blinking -- through barriers and to see the cords that she seeks to follow. The party could not come this way.

The chambers get bigger. There are more undead. Xenia sees some of the cultists. They are dressed in Red, with Red hoods, robes, and masks. They do not have cords. They seem to be operating machinery, or reading old tomes, mostly.

Finally Xenia catches a glimpse of another room, a large room with a high ceiling, filled with machines. At the center is a console, and slightly off to one side, something wide and flat. A summoning circle? a pool?

But Xenia has not entered. To do so might be extremely dangerous. Does she want to enter the very heart of the problem, alone? What if she is detected? Maybe Dominated? Is it worth the risk? Who knows what alarms or guardians are within, maybe alert?

[OOC: Last chance to back out! Just sayin' is all!]

Looks to be a glowy sort of pool, Wynn. Probs a portal of some kind. Ask Darples if they had a glowy pool in this place a'fore. I think this may be how all these deaders got in here in the first place.

I'm coming back, now. Don't know if we'll be finding a cure for any of this deadness stuff here, though. I think we'll be having to go through the portal.

The dark rogue gives the chamber one final look, then, before pulling out, she finds a nice hidden spot, and leaves the item that Harley had given her. If he can find her by looking for this thing, probs he can find this room same way.

As Xenia tries to find her way back, she realizes that she really is lost (based on prior rolls). What is her strategy for getting back? Any tricks or ideas up her sleeve? Maybe her friends can recommend something?

Didn't you use that already?

From your post above:

But this is disorienting, to say the least. and Xenia realizes that she has gotten somewhat lost (check 6 is not so good). Syr communicates his faith in Xenia's ability to get out of messes. Florin has gone to take a nap. Xenia has probably just lost her bearings for a moment.

That is to say, I don't mind getting lost. It was a risk taken. But, I'm not sure the rolls were what would have done it.

Yes, and setting off "cross-country," as it were, made you even loster! Following the cord and so much blinking made you disoriented. Now, I was trying to give you the chance to mitigate your being lost without any more prompting from me, so I will stop and merely say that your actions in trying to find your way back could compensate for your losing track of where you are.

Or if you need a hint, no prob, just ask.

Xenia (AC29, 68/68HP)

OoC: Thanks, Cayzle. No prob.

After leaving Harley's item hidden in the high chamber, Xenia heads back, following the glowing ropes back, hopefully, in the direction of the deaders who were pushing the weird block. From there, it might be touch and go to find her way through the tubes and stuff. With luck, she could just find some place safe to curl up until the next day, when the guys would have to come through this way anyway.

On the return trip, Xenia marvels at the walls and stuff that are solid on both planes. Maybe that's the secret to this Teucri stuff, why so little of it got knocked down when the Crying Woods pulled the city over. Maybe it stayed up 'cause it's built on more than one plane.

Florin Jadenth AC:23 HP:89/134
Tuesday October 14th, 2008 9:45:08 PM

Florin rolls over where he is resting and looks to the others before sighing abit and speaking up, "I still personally think this has something to do with Ga'al."

Florin thinks before looks towards Belkior, "Belkior, with my tracking skill and your wisdom we probably could make our way out there fairly well."

Looking to Wynn, Florin speaks to him, "Tell Xenia if she gets lost to just find a place and we'll go for her. Syr is ready to go as am I and I would suppose most of the others." Florin glances to whoever is leading the group now and looks to that person, wanting them to just give the signal on moveing out, "Everyone should be fairly fresh yet. Any combat spells and such the group is carrying should be okay. Not to mention can we really afford getting a full nights rest? The prophet's comments worry me, if these guys are raiseing some type of demon or god then how much longer do they have before it will happen? This problem has been going on for awhile now which means these guys have had alot of time to prepare so how close are they."

Florin stands and stretches some before moveing to speak to Darples, "You guys down here have any healing stuff? I could use abit of healing. The group here should conserve the rest of their spells and such."

Rather Darples can help any with Florin's wounds, Florin heads out to look at Syr and speaks to his friend, "I say we head out soon Syr. I just have a gut feeling this is going to go bad if we wait." Florin moves the holy symbol of Domi he wears out and holds it up some as he whispers mainly to himself and watches the symbol, he knows he has no powers to actually get a answer from his god but just the same he does this, wondering if he is being to rash in wanting to move now, "Domi, if I wish you could make my holy symbol move or something to give me a sign if my gut feeling is right or not."

Syr continues his lonely vigil outside the door. He looks down at the chalk line that Xenia started and follows it with his eyes until it fades from sight. Listening through the doorway, he shrugs his shoulders as the others speculate as to the cause of the infection and mumbles to himself, "Worry about the cure, not the source. What is... is."

DM Extra for Brahmah and Morgan (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday October 15th, 2008 12:14:49 PM

You know of the Crimson Shields, a group of adventurer heroes based in the Float, a magical floating city.

The Overlord of the Float, Alicia, has sent you both to aid them in their most recent task: Rooting out a cult from the Undercity, the secret level of mechanisms that keeps the Float afloat. The cult has advanced in part by spreading a plague that turns victims into undead.

Brahmah comes recommended by the High Priest of Domi. Morgan, e-mail me for details on your connection to this place.

Brahmah, Captain of the Chosen of Domi (AC 25, Hps 126) Heyoo (AC 16, Hps 45)  d8=5 ;
Wednesday October 15th, 2008 4:00:36 PM

(OOC: Cayzle, rolled 11th level hit points here. 5 points. Also waiting on word of the WLA issue. Sheet still in the works. Please note that his attacks are still wrong, but most everything else is updated.)

A massive figure can be seen approaching from behind Darples, looming, dark and foreboding. He lets the messenger pass without incident, then crosses the threshold, stooping a bit to let in his horns and avoid scraping the nice wallpaper.

Some may know him from the Giggling Ghost, the Catacombs or just by reputation for the tattoos which bear his name. It is Brahmah, former leader of the Chosen of Domi.

Clearly a seasoned ranger, he carries a large kukri and a human sized falchion, both prestine and well kept. His bow is unstrung and tucked behind his overstuffed backpack, much less cared for than the blades. His mithril shirt is also very clean, but that could just be the nature of the ore itself. His buckler has a custom engraving of a Holy symbol of Domi smashing the profane symbol of Marteaus.

His wardrobe is not anything special.... cloak, gauntlets, badge, periapt, helmet, three rings (Knowledge High Woldian check to read the third ring's symbol), buckler... no pants or boots.

What does stand out is the striking nature of such an ugly, black haired, middle aged, minotaur. The ranger stands eight feet two inches tall.
Seemingly every inch of his very muscular forearms are scarred, his tail is nothing but a stump and he is entirely missing his left ear.... any healer can tell you these wounds are decades old. Both horns are enscribed with sea or ocean motifs and naked minotaur females. His face bares the signs of age and a tough life. As if they were placed to highlight the his least appealing features, are the dozens of tattoos visible or peaking from under his apparel.

He looks hard around and down at the group, serious expression on his graying face. "I am Brahmah, former leader of the Chosen of Domi. It is my honor to join you on this quest and hopefully stay with you a bit longer. I respect the pecking order and do not wish to come to your group to usurp power from anyone. I will earn the respect I deserve.
Who calls themselves the leader of the Crimson Shields of Hope?"

The bear grunts and sniffs the nearest Crimson member. Brahmah speaks with a smirk (there is warmth there that cuts through the tough exterior), "Um, that's Heyoo, my friend. If you have any sweets or the like, he'll like them and will be your friend forever." The ranger chortles a bit. "Daft bear. Leave'em be. Your going to botch this before even getting started."

OOC: Hello fellow Chose.... uhrm, Crimsons... Shields... what is it wer'e called anyway. I so rarely checked out this game. Anyway, I'm Jay, you've seen me around. This is Brahmah. We're both glad to have a home again.

Please be sure to let me know races and sizes. Its unusual for Brahmah to travel with smaller folks. He will have to adapt. ;)

Harley (AC 28; HPs 85/85)
Wednesday October 15th, 2008 10:10:57 PM

Harley says a quick goodbye to the sorceress Solara. "Inform the overlord of our progress."

Harley walks up to the reinforcements that the overlord has sent to take Solara's place. He looks over the minotaur, noting the armor, weapons and battle scars. A fighter. He will be of use before this battle is done. Harley looks at Morgan, but cannot tell what the man's abilities are at first glance. Hopefully he has arcane magic to replace the lady Solara.

"Greetings Brahmah and Morgan. I am Harley. We are waiting for our companion to return from a scouting mission. With her information we will prepare to strike at the heart of this evil in the morning. These undead aren't like anything that we have seen before. They are fast, strong and smart. On top of that if they touch you, you turn into one of them. So far we have kept our distance and let our paladin fight them. He seems to be protected from their disease. If we are lucky we can stop the spreading and hopefully find a cure for the infected."

As always, Harley keeps his flail and shield at ready.

OOC -- Harley is taller than average human with a lean, muscular build. When adventuring he wears a finely made suit of Full Plate armor and has a matching Buckler strapped to his left arm. When he is not using it, Harley has a non-descript Flail strapped to his belt. His buckler has a flail drawn on it and upon closer examination the shape of his holy symbol is also a flail.

Belkior - (AC 24 (26 vs. evil); HP 91) - Magic Circle vs. Evil, Purifying Aura
Wednesday October 15th, 2008 10:20:47 PM

The halfling cleric looks up ... way up ... at Brahmah when the minotaur enters the room. Belkior is also not experienced with travelling with such large folks.

"Let me introduce myself, Sir Minotaur. I am Belkior Orvisson, Healer and Paragon of Alemi. While my companion takes care of the more martial side of things, I am primarily interested in protecting and healing my companions."

Belkior is smaller than average halfling wearing a shimmering suit of chainmail covered by a vestment with the symbol of Alemi upon it.

Syr HP 142 AC 36/35
Thursday October 16th, 2008 12:36:11 AM

The elf drops into a combat ready crouch as he sees the huge figure approaching and snaps his fingers inside the doorway to get the others' attention. As he recognizes the familiar face of Darples, he slowly comes out of the crouch empty handed. He follows the minotaur into the room and stands quietly behind him.

From his spot near the door he eyes the creature up and ... further up. Speaking from just over waist level (4'9") behind the minotaur, he coughs once politely before starting, "As far as leaders go, I really couldn't say that we've had one since Angus left. Florin over there has had his hand in the game before too." He nods in the direction of the paladin, "There are many here who are better field 'generals' or others sharper but I guess I could qualify as much as anybody being the most senior member of our undead hunting party." The elf's appearance seem to contradict his words as even by elven standards, he seems rather young. Smirking up at Brahman, a few twinkles in his ponytailed hair seem to catch the light, "Why? Did you want to thumb wrestle or somethin'?"

He holds his hand out to the minotaur, "Syrdeth Redbow but most of my friends call me Syr. Your well armored back is certainly appreciated. I think Florin was getting tired of all the attention from these dead creatures."

"Hey Wynn, might want to fill Xenia in on our new arrivals?"

With a mischievious glint in his eye in direct contrast to the 'taurs' tone, "As far as you proclaiming yourself a Captain... no offense meant but where are your men? I mean an officer without a squad is kinda like that bow on your shoulder without arrows, right?"

Brahmah, Captain of the Chosen of Domi (AC 25, Hps 126) Heyoo (AC 16, Hps 45)
Thursday October 16th, 2008 6:24:42 AM

Looking at Harley, Brahmah responds. "Scouting mission... into the Undercity? The high priest said thats where all the mess is we need to clean up."

Backing up to assess Harley (it looks like he is assessing him for battle), the minotaur nearly steps on Belkior. "Oy, sorry there." He gets on one knee, all the better to see the diminutive figure. "You'll take some getting used too, lil' friend. Not too many halflings make it the Taur Isles. A true healer though! Wow, haven't traveled with one in years. I can do some minor healing. Nothing grand." He thinks of the gnome whom tried to whack the Chosen a little while back.

Not even noticing the elf until he speaks, Brahmah jumps to his hooves and his hand is on a hilt before realizing it. "You look alot like another elf I know. You ever make it to the outer shoals of the Taur Isles?" He sounds dangerous now. The minotaur is certain this is the elf who stole his badge and nearly did in all his friends, but isn't about ready to tip his hand, yet. It takes a second to sink in, that this elf isn't carrying a bow.
"Huh, what? Thumb wrestle? No, no. I just thought meeting the leader would show my willingness to follow, regardless of my former status." Then it comes to him, where he's seen THIS elf... no armor, no weapons. "Lian of the Dragons, right? We met in the Catacombs once. You fight along the sides of the Green Dragons."

But at the mention of his men and the title Captain, the taur grows solemn. "Domi saw fit to sunder His Chosen. I haven't had a solid group since then. The WLA grouped people for specific missions and then tore them apart as they saw fit when the missions were complete. As for the title of Captain, it was an Honor the Chosen gave me when I was voted in as leader of the group. In fact I had been field marshall prior to that." He pauses. "But Zeoll was the true brains and diplomat of the group. Had to much trust in people though. Nearly got us killed a couple of times too.
My work with the WLA will certainly earn me the title for real, but I have yet to receive the orders. Perhaps this missions is the one." He tweaks his blue Guardsman badge.

"Captain is an honorary title I will hold in high regard as long as I live." The taurs eyes sparkle with growing tears. "But call me what you wish... avoid using minotaur though. That is not the correct term. I am a taur. Our race will be one again someday. Domi will see to that."

Meanwhile, deep in the Undercity ... (DM Cayzle)
Thursday October 16th, 2008 7:53:10 AM

The shadowdancer leaves Harley's momento -- a mace or flail, was it? -- tucked in a nook somewhere close by.

Then Xenia, having made her recon, tries to find her way back. She follows the glowing strands that guided her, eventually finding the undead who are still wrestling a square stone toward the central rooms.

From here it is a crap shoot. Can the rogue find the signs she left before, marking in chalk the route she left behind her? Will she see something she recognizes? Xenia, roll a Wisdom check vs DC20. If you make it, you are gold to go back. If not, you hole up and find a broom closet in which to wait for your friends.

Wynn's attentions help Xenia, so please add a +2 to the roll.

...

And back in relative safety, Florin prays to Domi for a sign: Should the party press on now or wait to replenish and gather their strength? Well, the undead hunter's holy symbol stays put, but just then two new heros join the group -- one clearly devoted to Domi. Maybe his opinion would give Florin his sign, were he to ask.

Harley, Belkior, and Syr all step up to greet the new heros, each in his own way.

The Domi worshipper, a powerful minotaur warrior, steps forward and engages the group. He is articulate as well as imposing, and he fills the room, overshadowing the other newcomer for the moment. His bear shuffles forward as well, comparable in size to the large bull-headed ranger as a wardog might be to a human.

[OOC: Extra note to Brahmah and Morgan: If I recall correctly, you both have sailing ship experience in your backgrounds. That might give us a hook to allow you both something in common, and maybe more.]

Xenia (AC29, 68/68HP)  d20+4=18 ;
Thursday October 16th, 2008 10:00:34 AM

It looks like the way to go. There are bits of chalk still on the floor. Things look familiar. Then ... everything all goes south. All the chalk marks dry up, and all the tubes and passageways all look the same.

"Wyyyynnnnn." The slim half-drow rogue calls to her sweetheart and best guy over their telepathic bond. "I think I'm lost. I found this little room. It's got mops and pails and cleaning stuff in it. I'm gonna hole up here till you guys are through resting. We can meet up tomorrow."

"Tell Harley that I left his thing in the room with the Portal. He said he could find me with it, right? So maybe he can find the Portal Room tomorrow by following it too."

"Whazat? A minotaur? Well that's sump'in you don't see every day, isn't it? 'Kay. Find me tomorrow. Love you."

Quietly, the rogue moves each piece of cleaning stuff, positioning the whole so that opening the door will cause a cascade of clattering equipment. Finally, satisfied with her work, she ensures that her flame red hair is tied up securely in her black headscarf. All security measures taken, Xenia curls up in the corner, and settles in for a catnap before meeting up with the Shields on the following morning.

"Morgan and I were on a ship captained and ran by WLA members. Sort of a merchant vessle meets taxi for the WLA. Anyway, we worked 'board ship for about a week, did ship related duties and then got these orders. I don't know him well and didn't get time to either, short of the bar fight in Dirt City with a couple thugs who didn't like my badge and the look of Morgan. I made sure they respected the badge before dragging them off for insighting violence. Morgan was so fast, I didn't even see how he dropped the with the knife who was about to stab me. I'd owe him a life debt if he'd actually except it.

Problem with Dirt City are their laws are pretty loose. Its ran by Houses, come to find out. I'm sure those three got off on some technicality.

Anyways...

I still don't know if he is affiliated with the WLA or what." He looks at the silent and aloof Morgan.

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75]
Thursday October 16th, 2008 5:42:01 PM

"Ships be damned" the bard voices his opinion. "They have a nasty habit of sinking when farthest from shore. Course if I hadn't been shipwrecked and found by Bralin's folk, I would have never met up with Syr over there, or Florin or Belkior, or Xenia" The half elf can't help but wonder if this taur will fit through the tunnels and passageways of the undercity." Do you have any magic that allows you to shrink?" he asks.

"Wynn Brightsong" he introduces himself to Bramah and Morgan. "I'm just the minstrel here. Syr and the rest do all the hard work, I just tell it better than they do. Xenia's off scouting, you can meet her tomorrow. The passageways appear to shift behind you in the undercity and currently she finds her route back obscured. We will have to find her tomorrow. "

Wynn is medium height and of slight build like most half-elves, but a careful look reveals a few surprises. There is an athleticism to his movements and what appear to be gills hidden beneath his collar. A longsword hangs at his side, and beneath his cloak and vest lies a well crafted mithril shirt, almost unseen from casual view.

Brahmah, Captain of the Chosen of Domi (AC 25, Hps 126) Heyoo (AC 16, Hps 45)
Thursday October 16th, 2008 6:18:10 PM

Brahmah looks at Wynn, confused, but intrigued about his views of ships and the ocean. "In a storm, a good captain strays from the shore to avoid rocks and debris being swept just off shore. If you sink in the deep, you've had a good captain." He pauses. "You've only sank the once?" He wonders outloud. "I can count at least three times for me, twice with the Chosen. The last time I got this." He digs around in his pack for something and withdraws a serrated, three inch long tooth. "Dug it out of my thigh after getting back to the ship. Wait, did we sink that time?" He scratches his chin. "Then the time before that, we ended up on an island who's owner wanted to cut us up and study us aberrations." He shrugs, carefully placing the shark tooth back into his pack.

"No, no shrinking things. Why?"

"No one is JUST anything in a group Wynn. You bring music and stories, right? My best friend is a bard and druid. He was far from boring. I haven't seen that seer in about three months though. Besides, just looking at you I can tell your not just the entertainment." He smirks.

Florin Jadenth AC:23 HP:89/134
Thursday October 16th, 2008 10:34:25 PM

Florin looks to Brahmah and Morgan before speaking to them, "Hello to both of you. I have seen you before Brahmah, neveri magined I would be traveling with you though. I would say I have your back but then I would either have to float or grow taller." Florin smiles as he jokes with Brahmah.

Florin stands 4'11" and wears a well crafted mithril breast plate along with his backpack that holds a pair of quivers and his bow set for his strength. At his waist is his trusty mithril bastardsword, the handle made of pure silver and in the form of a dragon, the wings as it's guard and small ruby chips giveing it a red eyed look. Held in his free hand is his large steel shield that has a large hammer that is smashing down on a anvil, a symbol of Domi.

Florin glances to the others, "I'm ready to head out people. I still do not like waiting, what if they get this demon or god things summoned before we even get there?" Florin is going off of anything Wynn tells the group. (Not sure if Wynn has spoken of the portal or anything so kind of leaveing that out as one of Florin's reasons for wanting to move."

Florin also motions to Brahmah, "I'm sure between Brahmah and my tracking ability we can find Xenia pretty quickly." Florin haveing made note that Brahmah said he was a ranger and figureing Brahmah has tracking skills.

Syr HP 142 AC 36/35
Friday October 17th, 2008 1:20:11 AM

Syr puts a hand on Florin's shoulder lightly. "I'm with you but we don't need replenishing, why don't we let Belk and Harley decide to rest or not for everyone since they are the most affected."

Syr coughs loudly when he hears Wynn's description of himself, "Cap, don't let our storyteller over there fool you. He's the one that started the fight with the only dragon we've ever met. As far as Lian goes, never met him or want to. Got no use for dragons... The only time we turned to a Dragon group, they stuck us with their butler... Bunch of primadonnas if you ask me."

Brahmah, Captain of the Chosen of Domi (AC 25, Hps 126) Heyoo (AC 16, Hps 45)
Friday October 17th, 2008 11:05:58 AM

Brahmah looks down at Florin. His neck is starting to hurt, all this tilting and such. But, he'd get used to it. He massages his neck. "I have heard little about mainland adventurers. Of course Dragon groups I heard about a bit, due to prestige, you know." Then looking at Syr. "Well, that Lian guy is VERY NICE and I feel like I know him just from the one conversation I had with him. Anyway, I think Dragons earn the title and of course, some power and fame affects everyone in different ways. Truthfully, the Chosen are very well known in the islands, so well known in fact, we had assassins and hired killers and the like after us all the time. The Diseased One sent his minions our way multiple times."
Turning back to Florin. "If Xenia is human, I can track her very well. If not, I can muttle through. Maybe if you tell me about her boots...." He begins asking about Xenia's walking style and how she carries herself.

Setting Off (DM Cayzle)  d10=2 (secret DM wandering monster check)
Saturday October 18th, 2008 7:21:12 AM

The night passes, but Xenia finds her sleep broken by interruption. Several times, she hears patrols or something passing nearby. Twice, undead poke around in the closet, and she has to hide.

The rest of the party talk, rest, recharge, and plan. The party begins to get familiar with Brahmah, and there's even some good-hearted joking. The other new hero, Morgan, withdraws without saying a word. Maybe he will rejoin you all in the morning.

At dawn -- or close to it, your guts tell you in this windowless place -- you prepare your spells and meet Darples. He asks how you want to proceed. He wants a marching order -- single file -- although he himself should be second so he can show the way without being on point. Also, how will you move? Any magic protections or screens? Hide from Undead? Invisibility? Are you all stealthy or loud?

To Xenia, the preparations seem to take forever, but at least through Wynn she can get a sense of what is going on.

Brahmah, Captain of the Chosen of Domi (AC 25, Hps 126) Heyoo (AC 16, Hps 45)
Saturday October 18th, 2008 9:06:50 AM

ooc: Cayzle, you haven't let me know about my sheet. Is it okay?

In the morning, the ranger prepares his meager spell list.

"Perhaps we will meet later, Morgan? May the wind be at your back."

"I can take position whereever you need me. I am a great tracker though. I actually don't have too much experience underground."

"Oh yes, by the way, I have NOTHING that can help against undead. No scroll. No invisibility. No turning ability." He thinks a moment. "How often do you deal with aberrations in this place? Maybe I should start researching dungeons and the dark places? Dungeons never really came up while I was with the Chosen. Apart from the ziggarat and Black Sword, we rarely delved."

Spell List:
1) Charm Animal, Alarm
2) Speak with Plants x2
3) 0 [Brahmah is at the level to cast 3rds, but has not the aptitude. ;)]

Xenia (AC24, 68/68HP)
Saturday October 18th, 2008 8:31:06 PM

"G'morning, Hon."

Xenia rouses herself when she feels the first stirrings of Wynn's thoughts. Today they would be preparing to move on the Portal Room. While munching part of a hardtack ration, the rogue recaps the events of the previous day with Wynn, translating the trip into hard numbers by which they might suppose the degree of danger in various places.

"I'm gonna draw a map, Wynn. Dunno if it'll help or not, but maybe knowing the layout might give us an advantage once we break into the Portal Room with all them Red Hood guys.

And so, while waiting for the others to come up through the tubes and shafts, the dark rogue prepares paper, pen and ink and begins drawing a map of the high ceiling room with the strange glowing pool.

Request: Could we have ...

1) the numbers of Red Hooded and Masked figures in the Portal Room?
2) the numbers of other undead in the Portal Room?
3) the time it took Xenia to get from the point at which she saw the undead pushing the block to the Portal Room?
4) the number of undead that she saw as she went from the undead pushing the block to the Portal Room?
5) a map of the Portal Room?

Expended: Scrolls: Invisibility; Thunderstone 1; Winged Boots 2/3, Bag of Tricks 2/10

Syr HP 142 AC 31/30
Sunday October 19th, 2008 2:43:55 AM

Syr's ears perk up when he hears 'great tracker', but then he shakes his head, "Hey Wynn, since you have Xenia inside your head, it'll probably be best if you lead. Plus, I think you can manage to move more quietly than talk, dark, and horned over here despite his tracking ability. How does Wynn, Darple, Florin, Harley, Brahmah, Belkior, and yours truly sound for an order?. Wynn up front until we reunite with Xenia, plus without Xenia, you are probably one of the quietest. Do you think we'll need the tracker with the chalk line?"

He turns to the spellcasters, "Belk, Harley? What's your thoughts on spells?"

Assuming everyone agrees, he lines up behind the 'taur and says, "Don't think of it as a dungeon, think of it as an extended basement. This places keeps the Floating City afloat. You should be right at home. It's like the basement of a ship."

Brahmah, Captain of the Chosen of Domi (AC 25, Hps 126) Heyoo (AC 16, Hps 45)
Sunday October 19th, 2008 1:28:09 PM

"Think of it as a keel room... don't know how that can be, but okay." Say the taur shrugging. "So, undead eh? Is there anything else, because the corrupting touch and the chance I'll become one of them?" He smiles. "I mean, is there anything special, like is there a necromancer, lich, cultists, etcetera, controlling the basement?"

Florin Jadenth AC:23 HP:89/134
Sunday October 19th, 2008 9:45:21 PM

Florin nods his okay with Syr's thoughts on moveing order and will fall into place since the quicker moved on the quicker there.

Florin does take a couple moments to explore the abilities of his hat of disquise, curious of something. Florin tries to take on the appearance of one of the undead, wondering if he can with the magic. It could prove useful or maybe not but knowing the limits of the magic item may come in handy.

Rather the hat allows him to or not Florin will take on his normal form and move out with the others. He is glad thought because his mithril breastplate makes less noise then the heavier armor he use to wear.

(OOC: Not sure, how many hit points would of Florin gained from resting? I will update Florin's hitpoints on next post. Also his abilities and such will be placed on the next one also.)

Morgan Kingsley
Monday October 20th, 2008 4:45:19 AM

(Ooc for Cayzle: I will update everything with the character except the background story today and pass it on to you - as for equipment I stacked Morgan with "what a sailor might own" and his money will be "kept" for the most part either as gems, jewels or cash. Thereby when I get the hang of everything I can "drop" by the shops and further equip Morgan.)

(Ooc: sorry about "not" joining in from the beginning - I was so unfortunate that my provider went down Friday morning (local time) which is a freak accident. Anyway I will try to make up for it. As for who everyone is I have been through all of your character sheets and tried to keep my self up to date lately thereby getting into the "mood" of the shield.)

Morgan approaches the people wearing a dusky white wool shirt, a pair of shaggy dirt brown pants tugged deep into a pair of leather black boots, as he clears his throat "Pardon my absence - I have a tendency to be a bit overwhelmed by new surroundings. With everything that has happened lately it has been a bit confusing but I do beg your forgiveness". Morgan pushes back his cloak and bows slightly. "Anyway you all have met my travel companion Brahmah, and he has already told you how we got acquainted. Anyway I am Morgan Kingsley, former shipmate of the jet-black raven, you probably never heard about it, all the same since it has not said these waters for a while." Morgan take a deep breath then continue, "I have been sent here by the overlords hand, why is uncertain to me since I by no means carry the reputation you folk do. Nonetheless I hope my trusted blade will be of serve to you" tapping his left side where a curved scabbard is dangling from a huge oversized black belt.

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75]
Monday October 20th, 2008 7:50:44 AM

As Xenia thinks her way through drawing a map, the bard translates the rogue's thought to paper, producing a map of his own. "What with moving walls and the like this may not serve as well as I might hope, but if we hit a wall, I can blink through and see if the trail continues on the other side."

Brahmah, Captain of the Chosen of Domi (AC 25, Hps 126) Heyoo (AC 16, Hps 45)

"Moving walls? Great! That should keep things interesting."

Morgan Kingsley (AC = N/A , Hps = N/A)
Monday October 20th, 2008 5:21:24 PM

"How do ya mean moving walls?" gazes suspicious at the minstrel. "Are you trying to tell you us that you let someone out here alone?" "That seem a bit, well bold maybe even foolish if ya ask me, which o'course ya didn't". "Moving Walls..." fondle his lower lip with his right thumb and index finger as his face turns thought full.

The halfling cleric has his divinatory spells prepared. Belkior wishes, though, that he had thought to ask whether spells such as FInd the Path would work to find Xenia.

Monday October 20th, 2008 11:41:43 PM

[OOC to Morgan and Brahmah: We'll hash through final PC sheet details in the next day or three. No worries.]

Brahmah volunteers to track.

Xenia tries to recollect details of her scouting trip:

1) the numbers of Red Hooded and Masked figures in the Portal Room? -- more than a handful, less than three handfuls. Very hard to tell.
2) the numbers of other undead in the Portal Room? -- Maybe three for each hoodie?
3) the time it took Xenia to get from the point at which she saw the undead pushing the block to the Portal Room? -- Using Blink, trying to follow a cord she could only see in the Shadows ... maybe an hour or two.
4) the number of undead that she saw as she went from the undead pushing the block to the Portal Room? Varied quite a bit. Never more than 20.
5) a map of the Portal Room? -- Really, you did not get a good enough look. Probably circular, maybe 50 to 100 feet in diameter, that's about all you guess.

Syr asks Wynn to lead. He suggests Wynn, Darple, Florin, Harley, Brahmah, Belkior, and Syr as an order.

Brahmah asks for info that is not really available.

Florin gains twice his level in hit points resting. He can disguise himself as an undead using the hat, but that will require Disguise checks at +10 on the roll.

Morgan introduces himself and declares that he is at your service.

Wynn mentions mapping. And Blinking.

Belkior is ready to go. Though he still as a question or two.

The party sets out, with the order listed above.

Darples leads you out into a thicket of tight passageways. He listens to what Wynn tells him about Xenia's hiding place. Brahmah is using the Squeeze rules to get through.

The Undercrat leads you on -- in a curvy way, right back to Xenia. The whole party is together.

Where do you want to go? How will you get there? Where does Xenia fit in? Where do you want to go first?

Aura of Courage (Immune to fear and +4 morale bonus to everyone in 10ft against fear effects.)

Florin moves along with the others and stays as silent as he can while moveing along, keeping in mind the abilities of his hat and wishing he had some disquise skill so that he could make better use of it but for now atleast he knows.

Florin will help Brahmah if he has to do any tracking also, doing the aid other bit mainly.

Florin keeps his shield and sword at the ready to since who knows when any of the undead may pop up.

The Meeting

Shoulda flown up and taken a better look around, the rogue chides herself as she puts up the unused paper and ink. Lesson for next time. Next time maybe take more time. Do a better job.

It isn't too long before the guys arrive. The guys plus two. The minotaur is particularly interesting.

"So that's the beef, huh Wynn?" Xenia thinks to her guy. "Never seen one of them up close."

"Hi, I'm Xenia." The red-headed half-drow gives her signature hand wave. Then, cat curious, she makes a circle around the two newcomers, taking them in with her ever-searching green eyes. Suddenly, those eyes go wide and her hand rises up to cover the round "O" of surprise into which her dark lips have just formed.

The rogue's poise of nonchalance crumbles as she retreats to Wynn's side where she leans in on him, reaching up on her toes to whisper into his ear. "Wynn," she says, forgetting completely for the moment, their telepathic bond, "he *ain't* wearing no pants!"

The Scouting

After describing the room to Darples, Xenia asks whether the Undercrat recognizes the room and whether he can guide them there. Lacking that ...

"Here's my idea. Them deaders were pushing this big block of stuff. It took a few of them to do it, so I figure the block's gotta be heavy. Being heavy, it's gotta leave some sorta mark on the floor. If we can track them marks, I think that'll lead us where we wanna go."

"I'll scout on ahead a good distance so we can stay out of the way of roving deaders."

"Hey, Darples, you got any idea what that block thing was that them deaders were pushing?" she asks.

OoC Note: Xenia will scout at least 100ft ahead of the group, keeping in constant contact with Wynn. If the 1hr time limit of her longstrider spell expires, she'll replenish it as necessary.

"So, I'll go where you need me. Do you need me to track?" He looks at the red headed drow. He is smashed into this little space, very uncomfortable.Drawing swords will be near impossible here. Thinks Brahmah. He doesn't show concern yet. Still have horns though.

(Survival tracking 30, 24 to avoid any natural hazards)

He has never learned to be stealthy and he already knows by the looks of this group, that he is by far the least talented in that respect, however, he is not without reason and attempts silence all the same. However, moving silently when oness horns can't fit the tunnel and the one's weapons scraping the stonework, its quite difficult to remain quiet. (Move Silently 2, Hide 9) With one particularly loud and sharp scrape, he says, quietly, "Sorry! This isn't my thing you know." He grimaces with frustration.

Xenia (AC24, 68/68HP)
Tuesday October 21st, 2008 12:40:46 PM

OoC: 2nd Post.

"Yeah. That's the idea," Xenia replies to the big Horned Guy. "We need to track where they're dragging them blocks to. See if you can find the tracks. Then we can follow 'em to where they go. Even if they don't lead to the Portal Room, we can at least find out what the deaders are up to."

The elf greets Xenia with a smile and looks around the broom closest curiously, "nice job Red! Wynn kept us up to date on everything but the snoring."

With everyone around and the group set to deploy again, "Hey guys now that Xenia is back, how about we swap Florin and Wynn as he seems to be the only one with a built in immunity?" He looks at the two in askance. "Also, I am little concerned about getting around this wide load in front of me... Think you can bring up the rear big guy?"

Just as they are about to set off he snaps his fingers as if recalling something. Turning to the two priests, "What's the verdict on spells, anything to help like that undead invis?" He nods to Belkior, "and can you take care of Florin a bit with a heal?"

Harley (AC 28; HPs 85/85)

Wynn [AC=26; HP=75/75]
Tuesday October 21st, 2008 10:52:36 PM

Wynn does his best to stay out of the minotaurs way as they squeeze through the passageways. 'Do you think if we severed the chords that bind these undead to the ethereal world we could destroy them? Xenia and I could blink in, cut the connection, and blink out." he suggests to Syr and the others.

To the Central Command Room (DM Cayzle)
Wednesday October 22nd, 2008 12:48:14 AM

The idea of following the block is a good one, and the party sets off. After some contemplation, and after interrogating Xenia about what she saw, Darples exclaims, "Surely the place you describe so vaguely is the Central Command Room. I know how to bring us there, maybe by a safe route."

Wynn contemplates attacking the undead's shadow cords directly. "What would happen then?" he wonders.

Your marching order from front to back, (correct me if I am wrong) is Florin, Darples, Belkior, Wynn, Syr, Harley, Morgan, and Brahmah. Right? Xenia is scouting ahead.

Everybody please make listen and spot checks!

Florin moves along with the others and keeps his eyes and ears open the best he can. He knows that it won't be hard to notice the undead since if they spot you first they will come chargeing most likely. With this thought Florin grips his shield and sword abit harder and continues moveing.
