Bothered by the visions, Beren struggles to escape the effect, but having succumbed to the smoke cannot so easily regain his senses. His companions try to make sense of what they witness. Jet considers the benefits of fire, and wonders who or what the shadowy image might be. Alexi and Caelnin consider if the images might concern the history of the Ahote, while Fatine and Anreteopen their minds to the experience.
Keela sees all around her succumb to the effects of the smoke. Pupils dilate as eyes become fixed and unblinking, and each becomes witness to the shared vision. The young woman sees Ishtaqa move his lips as if with a great effort. The shaman's eyes remain fixed on the billowing smoke, his body still like the others as he speaks. His words pierce through the vision, but do not interrupt the dream.
"The Ahote died to fill the empty belly of the fire. Only a small hunting party survived the cataclysm. Weeping tears of grief at the death and destruction, Catori extinguished the flames pursuing the group. Catori continued her weeping so that the people might slake their thirst, and her flowing tears created the valleys. When she saw the last people would not die, Catori no longer wept, and the land sprang to life under her smile..."
All except Keela Highlight to display spoiler: {More images appear...a small band of natives on the move, making temporary shelter, hunting, gathering fruits and leaves, taking only what is needed to feed and clothe the group, living lightly on the land, before moving on, with little trace that they had ever been. Over time the group grows larger, as children are born...and live.}
"The spirit mother is good to the Ahote, and the people honour the land, only taking what it gives up willingly. That which lives in the lands of shadow, deep in the ground, sleeps undisturbed."
The images whirl again,everyone except Keela[ Highlight to display spoiler: { hear the high keening of women's voices, as a man's voice cries out in anguish. When the images materialise, the group is standing inside another yurt. A man is kneeling over the fragrant smoke coming from a small fire. Muata, Tocho, and the other natives from the smoke ceremony are present, eyes wide, pupils dark. "My baby! First Born Daughter!" a woman cries rocking back and forth. The kneeling man rises stiffly, and turning to the group huskily announces, "Kajika* has come in the night and taken Wenona and Red Bird."}
Keela registers no change in the appearance of her companions or the other dreamers, with the exception of the shaman. With enormous effort the elder turns to fix his gaze on the young woman. His pupils are enormous, dark, and sad..."the children..." he whispers.
The smoke billows, fragrant and compelling...

OOC: I'm a little confused. Was a child just taken/kidnaped while we were doing our spirit walk, or is that from the past? How long ago?
Is the spirit dream over? Are we back to what we think is our own lucidity?
(OOC: While experiencing visions of the past, someone (the man kneeling over the smoking fire) has entered the dream world and summoned the dreamers. Your dream-self has gone to this other place while your body remains in the hunters encampment. Sort of like visiting the Giggling Ghost. Does this help?-DM Carla)
Beren(AC 18, HP 23/23 Red AC 13, HP 25/25) Tuesday October 14th, 2008 9:27:27 AM
To Beren, this is all strange and new. He cannot break free from the vision, and he does not understand it either. It seems as if he is living in the past of trhese people. There was some evil creature that attacked and killed most of them. Then slowly they built up their civilization anew. Now in this last part of the vision, something has once again attacked the village--the one who "Walks without Sound".
Do these people expect the adventurers to do something. or are they just showing what has occurred?
OOC--I think the elder (DM) is inviting Keela to breath the smoke as well. :o)

Keela Tuesday October 14th, 2008 6:03:46 PM
Keela cannot see the visions, but she hears what Ishtaqa says.
Hunting party? she thinks. There must have been women in the hunting party, then, if the population survives. How unusual! They were very lucky. Surely the gods have blessed them.
Then, the visions seem to take a dark turn, and Ishtaqa is having more trouble speaking.
"Children?" Keela says aloud. "What children? What happened to them?"
She chooses not to inhale the smoke, still believing that somebody in the party should remain clear-headed.

Jet (AC: 18, HP: 28/28) Tuesday October 14th, 2008 8:25:05 PM
Jet shows great anger at what he sees, once he begins to understand the dream vision.
Once he comes out of it he will speak to Tocho, looking him in the eyes, "I'm not one to take insults lightly and from what I have seen, your people have received more then their share from this dark figure. So I will say again, we can work together as friends and deal with this evil that haunts yours lands, or we can part as enemies and deal with this, this, thing individually, likely not being successful."
He then looks to the leader, Muata and says, "There are two obstacles, the first, we have sworn an oath to the wagon train that we will see them safely to Bryn Baraz, but if your people will continue to guide them and protect them as we would, then I will give you my sword, my honor and my heart, that I will help protect your people from this scourge. I will not speak for those here with me. Their contract is their own, but I'd be damned by Domi if I let something like this creature continue to exist, because evil does not rest, but continues to consume, just as the fires across the plains. The second obstacle would be, that we must come to terms of agreement on what our relationship will be after we help you destroy this evil that menaces your people."
He stands there, a large dark figure. His muscles now relaxed, but imposing and in no way is the intimidation he was using before apparent, but now a figure of remorse and understanding.
Alexi (AC: 17, HP:28/28) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37) Tuesday October 14th, 2008 10:42:51 PM
The words of Istaqa bring meaning to the visions for Alexi. A horrible past, a long recovery, and now an Evil returned. To Alexi, this Evil will threaten not just the Ahote but all in the settlement of Bryn Baraz.
The one thing that does bother him are the words 'That which lives in the lands of shadow, deep in the ground, sleeps undisturbed.'
The dwarves and the mithril mines suddenly flashed through his mind, briefly interrupting the vision.

Beren(AC 18, HP 23/23 Red AC 13, HP 25/25) Wednesday October 15th, 2008 9:28:42 AM
Beren listens to the comments of his new associates and friends. As they begin to piece together the vision they have seen, the entire group seems to uunderstand the plight of the people, and Beren too begins to understand.
"Such evil should not exist. It seems that to fulfill our contract we must help here as well. This evil will afflict the settlers as it does these people. We should help."
It is quite a speech from the noramlly quiet elf,and he does not volunteer more.
Jet (AC: 18, HP: 28/28) Wednesday October 15th, 2008 12:34:58 PM
Jet nods his head in understanding at whatever his friends decide they should choose. He knows though, their insight was as profound as his own and in some ways, he is glad that the delicate Keela did not partake in the dream ritual. She is fragile as is and watching women and children from the previous wagon attack suffer almost broke her spirit. If she were to witness this dream, well, she would likely never be the same.
DM Bob and Carla Wednesday October 15th, 2008 11:06:27 PM
The visions continue for all but Keela who remains the sole person in the tent fully conscious of the here and now. She can hear and see her companions react to their visions, but does not share in them. Istaqa seems able to alternate between the vision and reality at will, whilst all others remain fully embraced by the dream. Within the dream itself, the defenders of the caravan and future settlers of Bryn Baraz are aware of each other, and their thoughts are carried to one another. Jet's desire to share in the plight of these nomads and prove himself worthy of their trust is echoed by others. Istaqa shares Alexi's worries about the mining at Bryn Baraz, but knows that the meaning of visions are not always so obvious, yet the parralels are disturbing to him.
Istaqa appears in the dream, an old and harrowed figure, leading a small and aging tribe of nomads across a sparse section of grassland. Few grasses grow, and the horses struggle to carry their burdens, so malnourished are they. The Ahote people follow in silence. One cannot help but think they search for something, something that still eludes them. The aged Istaqa looks to the horizon where a female figure emerges from the shadows cast by racing clouds. Not a large person...small, almost frail...not a child....wild hair and robes are caught by the wind. A puma of equal size accompanies her. They seem to point the way...and then they are gone, as if they might not have been there at all. [Int check vs DC 12 to realize that the Ahote in the dream are comprised entirely of adults]
When the dream comes to an end, the party find themselves back inside the original Yurt, their eyes red and stinging from the acrid smoke. Istaqa appears shaken by the vision. "You have born witness to the history of my people" he explains. "You understand our connection to this land and our sacred duty to protect it. Our ways may seem brutal and cruel to you, but not more so than the cruelty of nature herself." Istaqa wanders through the tent, trying to gauge the reactions of the visitors before continuing.
"You have also shared my greatest worry. A vision I have shared with few but our chief and his council, that some darkness will overcome the Ahote and its' children, and that all will be lost. The vision haunts my every thought and long have I searched for it's meaning, but until this day, I have not seen but the demise of the Ahote into the land of shadows. Today the vision was different." Istaqa casts his gaze about his own people. "You also saw this, you know that these people carry with them hope for our own people."
Jet (AC: 18, HP: 28/28) Thursday October 16th, 2008 7:22:15 AM
Jet continues to stand as he was, his questions unanswered. If his friends and himself are to help these people, he expects to know what their tribe of peoples intentions will be after that is completed. He also needs to know, where they need to begin, once that conclusion is resolved.
Caelnin AC:16 HP:21/21 Thursday October 16th, 2008 8:34:35 AM
Once back to reality, Caelnin rubs his eyes and let the images sink in a bit more. Caelnin thinks deeply about what had happened and what he had recently heard from Istaqa.
"I hope that whatever Kah-gee-ka doesn't come anytime soon, or again.... I'm still confused. Hmmm..."
He then repeats the last few words that Istaqa said under his breath.
"These people carry with them hope for our own people...."
"Wait... Do they mean the artifact?"

Beren shakes his head to clear it from the effects of the drugged smoke. He too is trying to organize his thoughts. He suddenly realizes that in the dream, all of the people they saw were adults. (Int 15)
Does this evil afflict only children?
"Istaqa, what was meant in the vision by the lack of children? Is this foreshadowing, or something that occurred in the past? Can this affect the settlers we are sent to protect? If so, we are bound to fight this evil to fulfill our duty to the settlers."
Again, even the disfigured ranger is surprised at the length of his speech.
Fatine [AC 16, HP 14/14] Dogs [AC 20, HP 13/13, 13/13] Thursday October 16th, 2008 12:20:44 PM
Fatine listens to Istaqa speak, then her companions. Finally, she chimes in with her own opinion, "Istaqa, dee hope you talk 'bout do be carried by our people. If dis be your land, and we be welcome in it as friends, dat hope be yours to share. You want dese people o' yours to flourish, you be makin' friends wit' our people. Den we all flourish together." She smiles, hoping to convey some sense of friendliness in her offer.
Pausing, she lets her smile fade away. "But, you no want our friendship, you no want dat hope, or you no welcome our people to live wit' you, den dere be trouble. Sure maybe you warriors kill our farmers, but you no get dee hope you want. I make sure dat trinket be broke inno a tousand pieces."
Looking around, she sees the surprised - or annoyed - looks from her companions. "Wha? I already be in line fer dee 'ternal damnation. If'n I get all our people and deirs killed off first, it no make it worse. Forever already be forever, no?"
Looking back at the druid, she says, "So wat you say, Istaqa? We be friends, an' make the land flourish together? Hmm? If we be friends, I even promise ta help kill dat fire-belly ting if it ever come back 'round what killin' folk again. Hmm?"
Keela Thursday October 16th, 2008 2:07:27 PM
Keela winces a little at Fatine's blunt speech--but after all, it's not all that different from what Keela had been thinking.
"Neighbors help each other," she says quietly. "If we are settled nearby, then we are your neighbors and of course we will help. If our familes and friends are sent away--why, then we must go with them."

As the vision closes and he blinks his eyes to refocus, he laments that the puma was not a wolf. But he does ponder who the woman was. Was it Catori, their goddess of Nature? The first vision, with some of the children taken away, the last vision with no children at all...
These are Nature folk, and Alexi tries to reason along those lines. The Fire, then the famine from Drought. When there is drought and famine, the children are the first to die. Flame and lack of Water. That's two elements. What about Wind and Earth? Wind brings Change, perhaps that's us. Earth brings food when the conditions are right. Again, that's us, or Tarketh's orb. But is there an Force behind these Nature powers or is it just a natural cycle?
He finishes his thoughts and clears his throat again. Boy, he 's thirsty!
"Istaqa, as the witch says, perhaps we do carry the answer to your problems. You will need to talk to the Bear-Man, though. I am confident he will see your visions also as he is a man of Nature much like yourself. This enemy that threatens the Ahote may not be one that can be fought with strong arms and weapons."
He then speaks to Tocho, "I don't know what bargain was made with the gods to open up the opportunity to come here, but the gods must have foreseen a hardship on you, perhaps greater than the fire in the vision. Sometimes, when you've been alone too long, it is hard to open oneself up to others again. We welcome your friendship, but if you choose to stay appart, we will not hold that against you. But you and I are two peoples who will fight to the death to protect what is ours. I would rather fight with your back next to mine so we may both together protect our families and this land."
Alexi doesn't know what else to say, other than perhaps 'bring out the keg', so he sits back down, tired.

Mikal sits there quiet contemplating all that he has seen. He blinks a few times trying to get his eyes to stop itching.
He tries to grasp at a few parts of the vision but unfortunately they are lost to him.
"I personally will not allow further harm to come to this place. I will forsake everything if I have to, but your people should never have to go through this again. Nor will they if I have any say in it."
His passion for saving the land and helping these people is strong. He sends his prayers with passion to Alemi, to help him heal the people of what they have gone through.

DM Bob and Carla Thursday October 16th, 2008 11:20:25 PM
An awkward silence fills the tent as the assembled Ahote and their visitors try to make sense of the disparate visions and Istaqa's words.
Beren is first to break the ice, his questions striking at the heart of the matter. Istaqa replies with a shrug, "The dreams of the children are new to me since the first of the (dwarves) began digging at the place you call Bryn Baraz. The Ahote have no memory of such a thing and so I believed it to be an omen...but of what? Perhaps Catori warns us our women will become barren, but Muata's women is heavy with child. Perhaps she warns of some ancient buried spirit that steals our soul? I do not now, and the dream weighs heavy upon my heart, but today was the first I have seen of hope, that the Ahote will find their way."
Fatine, followed by Keela and then Alexi reach the same conclusion about the Ahote and their relationship with the settlers...fight together for both peoples, or fight each other and perhaps none survive. Fatine is most direct of all and some worry that her words will foment trouble, but Istaqa smiles and puts a hand on her shoulder. "I know nothing of this trinket, but your meaning is clear and I know your heart to be true Pauwau. I will return to our chief and council and speak of your offer. I will tell him that our futures lie together in ways we cannot see but that we must trust. I will tell him of the strength of the wolf", he looks to Alexi "and I will tell him that Tocho has a brother among you, one who speaks to soon but with fire in his belly." Istaqa smiles at Jet as he says this. "But now it is time to eat. you have travelled far and come to our camp in friendship." He speaks a few words in his native tongue and Muata peels back the tent flaps to let everyone out.
The Ahote have been busy while the vision quest has been underway. A small deer has been roasting on a spit and a variety of tubers and other plants have been cleaned and laid out for a meal. The party will be encouraged to eat and be given the opportunity to talk among themselves, or further question Istaqa and his people as they wish. Tocho and a few of the warriors show mild interest in the cask that had arrived at with the visitors, and several of the younger men have been busy tending to the horses.
Beren(AC 18, HP 23/23 Red AC 13, HP 25/25) Friday October 17th, 2008 3:27:21 AM
Beren eagerly leaves the hut when the door is opened. Retrieving his weapons from outside the door, he stows each in its accustomed place. Now, out in the open air, he breathes deeply to clear his head further from the fumes of the fire. He finds some water, and splashes his face, washing the smoke out of his eyes. He checks on his horse Red, to assure all is well with him. This done he will join the others in eating, but chooses his place apart somewhat from the main group. He still does not want to spoil the groups acceptance by his appearance.
Jet (AC: 18, HP: 28/28) Friday October 17th, 2008 4:59:33 AM
Jet smiles broadly at the ending of this meeting. he has seen things that he wish he hadn't but has the feeling, in his career, he will witness much worse.
He picks the cask up lovingly and rubs it like a genie bottle, "Oh my friends, I bought this for a special occasion, it is both rare and expensive, made from halflings, who really know their stuff. Now if you don't know much about strong drink, don't try to keep up with me, I regularly do liver push ups so mine is strong, but a mug an hour should suit you all well. Very little for the children, if you decide they should have some.
He peels the wax seal from off the cork and gently pours the first batch out, handing it to Muata, the second he hands to Tocho, the third for himself as he drains the cup in a single gulp to prove, it is not some trick or poison. He leaves his weapon and armor where he laid them before, a show of respect that they are indeed welcome and safe in their camp.
He watches Beren set apart from the others, pours another cup, walks over toward him and sits down beside him handing him the drink. "What's your problem eh? You believe people are so shallow that you will not be accepted because of a flaw with your face? Don't be a jerk, get your butt over there and allow them to look past the surface so they can see your heart and spirit. I think ... you will find, they care less about your deformations then you do, as well as the rest of the wagon train."
Jet stands up and walks away, "Live in the past if you desire, but I think you will find more friends and perhaps a lady that wants a warrior in her bed instead of some pretty boy addicted to looking in the mirror."
Fatine [AC 16, HP 14/14] Dogs [AC 20, HP 13/13, 13/13] Friday October 17th, 2008 3:51:22 PM
Fatine gives Jet a quizzical look. "Big Man. You make dee beer out o' poor little halflings? Dat odd. Dey look too gristly." She shrugs. "Ah well. Cannibism be for dee elders to worry 'bout. We just drinkin' some halflings!" Grabbing a mug, she takes a swig.
Fairly soon, Fatine gets quite drunk.
Keela Friday October 17th, 2008 4:58:11 PM
Keela's first impulse is to help with the food. She quells it though; she is a guest here. Instead she seats herself, exclaims politely over the bountiful spread, and does her best to try a little bit of everything.
She is a little intimidated by the men of the tribe, who seem so fierce. She does try, though, to speak a little with the women (if any of them speak Common). She talks of mundane topics that are of interest to most women: homes, families, children, health, hope. She talks a little about Senna and her children, but mostly she wants to listen. She tries to glean clues about what could be threatening the tribe's children.
Jet (AC: 18, HP: 28/28) Friday October 17th, 2008 5:04:05 PM
Jet looks at Fatine for a moment then laughs heartily at her jest. "Made out of halflings?" He shakes his head. He does not want these new friends to become confused, "No, no, no, they made it with their skills and ingredients. Can't you taste the hint of honey blended well with the hops? Now that I think about it, I should have bought two!"
Pulling a piece of deer from the spit, he is glad they didn't have to eat one of the horses they brought with them, although, horse isn't all that bad if prepared properly, but venison is one of Jets favorite meats.
Alexi (AC: 17, HP:28/28) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37) Friday October 17th, 2008 6:33:00 PM
OOC: I was hoping Jet had meant 'made BY haflings', not 'made FROM haflings'. Glad he cleared that up. :)
IC: Alexi thanks Istaqa for sharing the vision with them and their hospitality. He leaves his weapons where they are, as Jet did. He'd reather eat comfortably, not having his weapons poking him here and there.
He partakes with Jet's keg thirstily, but with moderation, a force of habit he instilled upon himself as a requirement to qualify as an officer in the Fist.
When Jet comes back from speaking with Beren he asks Jet, "What's his problem, the scar? Bet some of these warriors have scars just as bad. Let's see what I can do." At that he goes to Tocho and asks, "You have battle-scars. Tell us your tales of combat and the creatures you fought." He turns to the other warriors and says, "You too, tell us your tales, and I'll tell you about the Great Dire Weasle battle, and about the man we fought that became a giant right in front of our eyes."
He hopes that as the warriors show their scars and talk about their battles, Beren will become more comfortable about his. But Alexi is also curious about the creatures out here and what they may have to face. Knowing what you are facing and what it can do is half the way to winning the battle.
Caelnin AC:16 HP:21/21 Saturday October 18th, 2008 1:51:20 AM
Once Caelnin leaves the hut, he tries to clear his head by breathing in the fresh air and moves off to have some dinner.
"Hmmm....... I guess I'll have a bit of that strong drink... A quarter serve shall do... I can never hold any type of this beverage down well." Caelnin says as he grabs some sizeable chunks of meat taking small sips of the spirit as he eats.
As the talks of battle move into the conversation, Caelnin's weapon forger personality comes out a bit as he asks one of their warriors (OOC: in common, then in elfish if he doesn't understand) "What types of weapons do you use? I'm interested in different weapons, especially different bow materials..."

Retrieving his various weaponary, Anrete strides over to the roasting deer, intending to give some professional critique on their techniques. However, the cocky barbarian soon realised that he is way over his head, and gave a pretty lame comment, "Nice deer."
Turning towards the stoic ranger, Anrete gave a mocking laugh as he remarks, "Tree-hugger are naturally vain. But then, beauty is subjective! I think I look pretty cool!" The former pit fighter grins broadly, his facial scars obvious despite his pale war paints.
Frowning slightly at the little witch antics, the wiry barbarian walks over gave her a good shake. "We haven't even started and your're drunk... tsk tsk..." Anrete shook his head vigorously.
For the more perceptive, you will notice Anrete seldom drinks.

Jet drinks Beren's drink for him then and turns around. He points to the symbol of Pantheon that has been embroidered on his chest, along with many other of the good gods. " Actually, I have the right to judge." He takes a few steps back toward the man he is trying to help.
"So, lets see it then Beren? Let us see what is so gawwd awful about you that you feel you can not be accepted amongst us. I can assure you, there is nothing there but flesh, muscle, bone and perhaps some bodily fluids that seep from glands within."
He looks into his empty cup and back at Beren "This cup is broken, it has a large hole in the top of it. I should go fix it." Then getting back onto the subject at hand, "Oh, and by the way, it seems to me that your more of a judge then others. To allow a few weaklings to change your view to believe that everyone thinks the way they do, seems to me not only unjust but a bit on the...........aw, never mind, just be who you are and hide in the corner of the world feeling sorry for yourself. Your far to kind a person for me to change your mind by getting you mad and your to valuable to the group and the train to have you leave in the middle of the night all because of my words. I still believe though, one must encounter their fears, foes and friends alike. Face to face with as much of a smile on your face as they can, with as much of a face one can have."
Walking back to the fire he speaks just a little louder then he did before, "Don't get to close to that fire Fatine, your little dolls might start to smolder, a bit like your temper."
He laughs out loud, already forgotten are the wise or perhaps detrimental words he shared with the elf. He somewhat looks forward to whatever retort she can come up with, he's in the mood for some friendly banter."
DM Bob and Carla Monday October 20th, 2008 7:33:36 PM
The feast is quickly underway. Jet uncorks his cask of fine ale and shares it with the Ahote warriors. The confusion over the exact recipe of 'halfling ale' is lost on their rudimentary use of common. Nonetheless, they raise an eyebrow at the taste of the ale, drain their mugs and hold out the empties for a refill. "We also make spirits" Muata informs Jet, "stronger than this but not as tasty. If you ever visit our village you will taste it."
Beren retreats with his supper to a secluded spot, safe from prying eyes, but not from the inquisitive cleric who presses him to reveal the wound hidden by the mask and accept the welcome of his companions. The scout does not comply and can only turn inwards, sure that they would be horrified by his visage.
Fatine's quickly downs the ale and finds herself getting tipsy. Several more drinks and she finds a saddle to sit against. The warmth of the fire is comforting and she struggles to keep awake [OOC -5 penalty to spot check vs DC 24 to detect Anrete's slight of hand]
Anrete samples the venison and finds it cooked to near perfection, hot juices flow over his fingers as he strips the meat into bite sized morsels. Dissapointed in Fatine's lack of self control, he rebukes her for giving in to the drink.
Keela, Caelnin, and Alexi engage their hosts in conversation. Keela learns from the few women along for the trip, that they are on a hunting excursion that may last several weeks. The warriors must gather sufficient game to last the winter, and they are but one of several groups involved in the hunt. She also learns that not all the warriors are men. There is a small group to the north comprised of men and women hunters, and the leader of that group is female. She learns little of the threat to the children, only that Istaqa has been plagued by dreams and is worried.
Caelnin learns that the Ahote warriors pride themselves on their weapons which they make themselves. Muata describes how he made his current bow from the horn of an antelope. He steamed and soaked the horn until it was supple enough to shape and then secured it around a wooden form for two weeks until it rehardened. The warrior had then spent weeks engraving the bow with luck symbols. The string was also made from the same antelope, the tissues cured and combed, then wound into their final form. Istaqa had called upon the spirit mother to bless the bow. Caelnin can easily tell that this is indeed a fine bow, equal to any he has made, perhaps better. The elf can also see a collection of javelins and spears in a rack, and long hunting knives rest in the belts of many of the warriors.
Alexi and Tocho share stories of battles they have been in, and creatures they have overcome. The Ahote warrior peels back his shirt to reveal a long crooked scar running diagonally across his abdomen. "The mountain lion lay in wait and as I rode by, leapt from it's hiding place above, and threw me from my horse. It was not a huge lion, but it was hungry. I held it's mouth from my throat with my hands but lost my grip and it ripped it's tooth across my belly. I managed to scramble away, but it leapt again. It was surprised I think, to find my knife in it's belly. " Tocho shows Alexi his necklace, a simple leather thong attached to a large curved tooth some two inches in length. Muata laughs, "that old story, you would think he'd never been scratched by a cat before!"
The light-hearted banter and sharing of stories continues into the evening. Slowly the participants make their excuses and find their way to their beds. "You are welcome to sleep in the big tent tonight and we will talk before you leave tomorrow" Istaqa wishes them a good night.

Alexi (AC: 17, HP:28/28) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37) Monday October 20th, 2008 9:50:44 PM
Alexi shows admiration at Tocho's scar from the mountain lion. He goes on to describe that in his first combat he was hit on the head by a accident by a companion and when he woke up the battle was over. He then describes the time they stormed a large stone building with walls many tree-lengths high (a castle) and how the ladder fell out from under him leaving him hanging on to the top of the wall. However the warriors defending the wall had thought he'd fallen and rushed to another section of the wall, allowing him to pull himself up and manage to cut the ropes keeping the door into the building closed.
He showed a few scars from other skirmishes and ended with a moderately embelished tale of the Battle of the Griant Weasle, wherein he proudly pointed out that it was his horse that killed the great beast, not him. He ended the tales with the story with the giant Wido, a few weeks back, how Jet was nearly killed, and showed the axe scar on his chest. He admited again, though, that his horse 'Lobo', meaning 'Wolf', had dealt the final blow.
With a big grin he said "What a marvelous horse!"
When they all turn in, Alexi helps Fatine to the big tent. In a low tone, he suggests they should keep watch. He trusts Istaqa, Muata, and even Tocho, now, but it pays to be cautious. "You never know what evil might attack the camp and it pays to be prepared." He suggests the usual watches.

"I must learn how do to use these tribal techniques with a mixture of the formal study that I have used to learn how to make my bow to find a nice balance. Is there any way that I can learn later on if I had the chance to? It will help me to further my education...."
"And maybe get closer to the perfect bow..." Calenin thinks as he slowly moves off to the big tent to get some rest and dreams about what he could with some of the techniques that he can learn.

Giving the dogs a feral growl of his own, Anrete casually snitches one of the witch's trinklets as he dumps Fatine back onto the ground. Making a face at the dogs, Anrete throws a piece of venison to see if they abandon their mistress for the meat.
Walking back to the warriors and their stories, Anrete listens silently as he tries to learn more of the Ahote without disclosing much about himself. And as the night draws near, Anrete stood up and gave thanks to Istaqa for the invitation. "Our thanks, honored elder."
Picking up his gears, the battle-scarred barbarian visited Copper before striding towards the huge tent.

He doesn't talk much about his past battles unless he is asked, but all of his fighter training came from the streets when he had to defend himself from one bad gang or another. He tells the story of how he strangled another teenager for cheating at dice. "I hate liars and cheaters" Bar fights, jail an assortment of tales that usually only come from rogues, bullies or thugs, not from a man who wields the power of gods, but if asked, he will also talk about his mentor and how they became friends over a meal. That is when he discovered what a real friend is and how he started his training as a priest. "I've shed tears twice in my life. The day my mother died and the day he told me we must part, so that the word can continue two fold."
With that, he drians his mug and bids everyone good night. Pats down Bantom to make sure he is comfortable and then finds his bedroll.

Touched by Jet's obvious concern for his friend, Istaqa agrees to examine Beren in the morning if the elf agrees, and then bids Jet good night. Mikal, Keela, Beren, and Caelnin all settle in for the night while Anrete attempts to pilfer a trinket from the sleeping witch. He is greatly surprised when both dogs leap to her defence, hackles raised and teeth bared. The barbarian growls back, but the two curs are not impressed and leap forward, dragging Anrete to the ground with their powerful jaws. They do not inflict damage, but stand over Anrete, a dangerous look in their eyes. [Hit AC=16 and 22, trip of 8 and 22, sleight of hand fails!]
Alexi winds up his tales of battle with Tocho and the others, and suggests a watch, but his companions are either fast asleep or beneath the gaping maws of a pair of dogs.
Assuming that there are no more antics, and that Anrete retreats with what is left of his dignity, the night passes uneventfully and the rising sun brings with it a fresh breeze that foretells a change in the weather.

Fatine wakes a bit late, well after sunrise. Groaning, she rubs her head, then retrieves a small breakfast from one of her bags. After awhile, she seems better, more or less. Packing her things, she calls her dogs, then gives them an odd look. They seem to be acting somewhat strangely.
One growls at the barbarian Anrete as Fatine walks past him. Fatine gives the dog a stern look and a whispered command to be silent. Smiling at Anrete in apology, she finds Jet and asks, "So what be dee plan, Big Man? We be stayin' to hurt ol' Fatine's head one more again, or you gon' take pity an' let us go back to dee wagons?"

Beren rises in the morning prepared for the day. He does not know what it will bring, but he will try to face it, and overcome any problems as he does.
After a meager breakfast, he limbers up and goes through a basic training ritual, then will find someplace to practice his archery for a short time, before too much starts to happen.
Jet (AC: 18, HP: 28/28) Wednesday October 22nd, 2008 2:02:43 PM
Jet rises with the sun, fresh as a daisy. Last night's bash lame in comparison to many nights he has had. As the Ahote have said, there is indeed stronger drink in the Wold, that's just one of the better tasting ones that exist.
Looking at Fatine he smiles broadly and replies, "We ride on the wind of courtesy." He says with a bow, then begins his morning ritual to all the good gods of the Wold, toasting to each in their own turn before putting on his armor and preparing the barding for Bantom. He then is seen to go off toward the shamans tent. If the man he spoke alone with last night is not up, Jet will wait patiently nearby reminiscing with the others on what fun they had last night. He even strays near the spit to see if any flesh still sizzles on bone.

Once she is presentable and her spells have been prepared, she emerges from the tent in search of breakfast.

Alexi (AC: 17, HP:28/28) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:37/37) Wednesday October 22nd, 2008 7:03:10 PM
Alexi wakes up refreshed. After putting on his armor he goes outside and breathes the fresh air. He's contemplates the trip back, the hot trip back, the prerilous trail down the plateau, then hears Fatine's dogs growl. It comes back to him that he heard them the night before put up some kind of rucous and Anrete making himself scarce, but was busy with Tocho and the other warriors to see what the cause was. He remembers helping Fatine to the tent, but nothing seemed amis and had forgoten about the odd incident.
Going back in he sees Keela trying to work out her stiffness and the others already gone. "You'll never really get used to a saddle, will you?" he ask, smiling broadly. He leaves her to her hair brushing, feeling a little awkward in staying, believing the brushing and braiding to be private moments.
Outside again he looks for Lobo and gives him a good brush-down. He shakes the saddle blanket out extra good to make sure nothing from the dirt-devil will prick Lobo and cause discomfort or injury.
With Lobo ready, he seeks out Jet, Istaqa, Muata, and the others, wondering if the Ahote will send representatives back with them to speak to Tarketh.
DM Bob & Carla Thursday October 23rd, 2008 8:20:14 AM
The party awakes early to find that some of the hunters have already slipped off into the grasses in search of game. Istaqa is just finishing his morning rituals and approaches Beren with an offer to examine his wound. When Beren shifts his mask, the shaman steps back, horrified at first by what lies beneath, but after the initial shock, he once again draws close and examines teh wound in more detail. He places a hand gently across the wound, tilts his head skyward, and calls upon his gods to assist in his work. The ancient elvish words do not however result in a change in Beren's condition.
"This is indeed a cursed wound" he sympathizes with Beren. "Only a healer much more powerful than I will rid you of this wound. The curse is strong, stronger than I" he laments.
Once everyone has aroused and set themselves to rights, Istaqa gathers the party together. "You have come to our camp with the outstreched hand of friendship, and friends you will be. We are linked together in some way that I cannot explain, but I will tell Dasan, our chief of our dreams and our pact of friendship. You must now return to your people, and we must return to ours, but we will come to you before the first snow." Istaqa presents each them with a small totem bag on a leather chord. The bag is branded with the mark of the Ahote, a crude depiction of a clump of grasses with a spear protruding from it. "Wear these and you will be known by all of our people, they contain nothing more than herbs and medicinal seeds" . With that, the shaman bids them farewell and turns to his yurt which is being dissassembled on his behalf.
Beren(AC 18, HP 23/23 Red AC 13, HP 25/25) Thursday October 23rd, 2008 9:18:59 AM
Beren bears the examination of his wound with stoic resolve. When the shaman first steps back, the elf almost leaves, but as the shaman returns, he takes hope, that perhaps this man can heal him. When he is not able to do so, the ranger drops his head in renewed grief. Always the hope of a healing, and so far, always the disappointment.
Rather than despair, he hardens his resolve to carry on as he has. He will do his duty, but he will also remain aloof so as not o offend.
When the time of parting comes, he accepts his token with thanks to Istaqa, then mounts his horse, preparing to leave.
Jet (AC: 18, HP: 28/28) Thursday October 23rd, 2008 3:28:19 PM
Jet too is not happy with the results of the shamans examination. He puts his hand on Beren's shoulder and says, "If I have to kill every orc, half orc, dire weasel or giant, I will see to it, your as pretty as a school girl once again, my elven friend."
"Tarketh can change forms, maybe he has the power to help? I don't think we have asked."
Jet leaves the horses as a gift for their people, mounts their own and takes off at a trot, spirits high, that the majority of their mission was successfully accomplished.
"How's your head feeling today Fatine? There for awhile, i thought tou were going to waste that good booze by having it come back up on you. I'm glad you kept it down, it would have been a sign of weakness." jet jests with the witch.
"Lets get back to the train, they are likely thinking thr worse as it is."

She is relieved to hear they will be heading back today. The little expedition has been very interesting, but she misses her family.

If Tocho does not accept the longsword, Alexi offers it to Muata. Otherswise he puts it back with his gear. He picks up his lance with the white 'flag' and joins the group for the return trip, waving at the Ahote.

The party takes their leave of the Ahote hunting party and spends the day travelling across the top of the mesa, and then down the treacherous trail towards the valley bottom.
