You travel the trade road, Axara and Feyjarl lost in their own thoughts. Kiel remains ever vigilant, while Rollo remains conscious of the enormous burden he carries. Hmark gapes openly at the marvelous sights.

Garret smiles and chats with people as they travel. He hears that raspberries are in high demand this year--some noble fad, no doubt. There's rumor of some recent dust-up in Dirt City--but when are those cutthroats and pirates ever not kicking up some trouble or other? He hears that the Oldarni merchant house is raising its prices. Again. Highway robbery, that's what that is!

Zeph is mostly with the group, but every now and again he dismounts (I assume?) and moves into the flow of travelers, for reasons of his own. On the first of these outings, you Highlight to display spoiler: { come away with 8 gold coins, a button, a bit of string, two game-pieces, and a bird's nest}. The second time...well, the second time doesn't go as well. The rest of the party hears an indignant cry, and looks up to see a scholarly-looking fellow in black-and-green robes pointing an accusing finger at Zeph. "Thief!" the man cries. "That's my purse, my lad, and you'd best keep your hands off if you know what's good for you!"

Other travelers seem to be giving the confrontation a wide berth, clearly not wanting to get involved.

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]
Tuesday November 25th, 2008 9:01:13 AM

The scream of "THIEF" wakes Axara up from her reverie. She looks around ready to intervene and then she saw it is one of her group members, Zeph. "Oh no, not another bad apple".

She watches the other group members, waiting for their reaction. "Will Kiel kill him too?"

(I think Zeph would have tried to get far enough away from the group that noone would hear such a thing, but I didn't specify, so its ok)

"Oh, good sir, I would never steal from anyone in my life. I do apologize you thought I would do a thing." Zeph says quietly. Then he bows and quickly ducks into the crowds so that noone could track him.

Zeph will attempt to duck behind a caravan, walk in between adventurers on horseback, and converse with random people as to seem inconspicuous and get out of the line of sight of anyone who may be looking for him. He will walk around, constantly ducking behind things to loose anyone following.(Hide =19) He will also keep an eye out. (Spot = 18)

Zeph will eventually find his way back to the group and hop back on his horse if all is successful.

(who rolls nat 20 on a spot check anyways?)

Kiel [AC:18 - HP:34/34]
Tuesday November 25th, 2008 11:12:17 AM

Upon hearing the yell, Kiel's reaction is instinctive.
Turning Phoenix towards the commotion, Kiel's hand on Gloombringer, he sees the man accuse Zeph of thievery.
As he goes to say something, a look crosses Kiel's face, one of confusion, then anger, then............as if he is having an argument within himself.

After a few moments, Kiel nods his head, nudges Phoenix over to where Zeph left his horse, grabs it's reigns and begins moving on down the road. At a leisurely walk. Knowing full well Zeph will eventually make his way back lest he be caught.

When Zeph finally reaches his horse, and climbs on, Kiel will turn his horse, blocking Zeph's forward motion and says bluntly: What I did to Sebastian. May not have been approved by you, but was done in protection of the group and our families. What you just did you did for your own gain and you jeopardized our mission. If you can't control yourself starting right now. If you feel the need to perform idiotic stunts like you just did then do us all a favor and leave.

Feyjarl stops at the cry, turning in the saddle he puts his hand on his bow, nocking an arrow.

Feyjarl sees the commotion and doesn't spot Zeph, shortly after Kiel turns back to the road and grabs Zeph's horse, he gets the idea and turns back to continue the journey up the road.

'Very eclectic,' he mumbles.

The dust-up in the road is mercifully brief. The scholarly-looking man, apparently anxious to be on his way, allows himself to be led off by his companions. Other travelers continue to give the scene a wide berth, and eventually Zeph rejoins his companions, none the worse for his adventure.

At your inn that night, you look up to see a tallish human man approaching your table. He has brown hair, blue eyes, and a friendly smile. His leather jerkin is still dusty from the road. "Good evening," he says. "I've been looking for you, as I have a proposition I think would be mutually beneficial. May I sit?"

Whether or not you allow him to sit, he continues: "My companions and I are aware that you carry a certain item among your possessions. We work for a...collector, shall we say, of the rare and valuable. Our patron would very much like to have the item you are carrying, and he is willing to pay handsomely for it." His voice drops a little. "I am authorized to offer you 5,000 gold pieces. Cash. Then we take the item off your hands, and you can tell whatever story you like to the folks back home." He smiles, a friendly smile. "What do you say?"

After his little adventure, Axara rides to Zeph and whispers to him "Pretty Boy Zeph, next time you want to fight your boredom, try to pick a girl. It still might get you killed but at least, not by one of your own."
She winks and gigles.

Later that night, when the man approaches, she listens and after hearing Zeph's answer, she intervenes. "It is okay Zeph. Let's tell them the truth." She looks at the man.
"So Sir, you finally found me. Yes, I am indeed the package in question the collector asked you to fetch for, but he is mistaken about my actual cost. It will cost 10 time that for him to have me for a night and he needs to pay for my protectors here and it will cost more if some people are watching. And everything is paid cash in advance. So go back to him with my conditions and come back if he is interested and if he can afford my services"
She gives him the most seductive smile she can master, burying her eyes deep in his.

'Now hopefully this silly diversion will give some time for us to prepare a response or be ready to fight. Hopefully we can create some confusion in their mind. If we survive this, we will need to answer the question of how they knew everything they knew. But for the moment,m let's hope the group will go with my stupid diversion idea."

And had anyone else had any dealings with the Oldarni merchant house? Garret was wondering if they really did have good quality products.

When the group is interrupted by the rude man with an offer, Garret looks up only as a second thought, as he is still thinking about how some nice raspberry pie might taste about now (Spot check: nice ONE roll there...).

When Axara gives her speech, Garret's eyes open wide and he leans over to Rollo, while not taking his eyes off Axara, and whispers, "Is she...? For how much?"

Looking up from his supper, and looking directly at each of the strangers' crew, until their looks recognizes that he sees them.

His fists clench into tight balls and the cheeks get tinged with redness, and his teeth clench together

Kiel's gaze turns back upon the stranger and then his comrades. He exhales slowly. Then begins:
He's not stupid, he knows what he wants and its not some roll in the hay with some adventuring wench.
Then turning back to the stranger he continues:
We all know damn well you have no intention of giving us anything. That is why you have your men positioned at every exit point. And a few extra within reach should one of us decide to rip your head off. And you should also know damn well we have no intention of selling you anything. So, placing his hand on the center of Gloombringer, do you wish a confrontation now, or would you like to back off and regroup for another plan? Either way to get what you want you'll have to kill us all, and I guarantee you You will be the first casualty.

*Kiel readies an action, should any signal be given to engage, or his demeanor shows his hands (metaphorically speaking) Kiel attacks the stranger with a full attack.*

Zeph denies any knowledge of any treasure.

Axara, demonstrating the abilty to think on her feet, confesses to being the treasure, but claims she costs 50,000 gp.

"No, milady, you are a treasure beyond price," the man replies with a gallant smile. "I would not presume to purchase such a jewel. The item I seek is considerably older than you--and, I confess, not nearly as fair."

The others watch, or react to Axara's bluff with varying degrees of astonishment.

Kiel is immediately hostile.

"You mistake me, sir," the man replies easily. "My companions are taking their ease at this fine establishment, even as you are. And if they stand ready to back me if something unexpected should happen--why, surely, you and your companions do the same for each other. Indeed, my intent here is exactly what I stated. I wish to offer a handsome sum for this item. If you refuse...well, I shall convey your message to my patron, and then we shall see."

"The volcano was a bad idea, I'll explain later Selemar." Zeph says to the Elf.

Zeph still thinks that diplomacy is a good idea at this point, and so he addresses the man. "Sir, please deliver our message to your patron that there will be no bartering for any item we may posses. With a final bow (and a reciprocal wink for Axara, he turns and departs the inn. A few moments later, the big man at the bar rises, stretches, pays his tab, and walks out. A few moments after that, the half-elf saunters casually out of the inn.

You spend a few moments discussing how these folk knew of your mission and your whereabouts. Kiel immediately suspects someone at Madam Dulcet's, perhaps forgetting that someone had been pulling Sebastian's string, and that person has not been discovered or dealt with.

You also begin speaking of departing immediately [OOC: This is the inn where you had stopped for the evening. The sun is setting, and you've been traveling a full day. Do you want to leave right away?]

He turns back to the others as he watches the people who wanted the item leave and says, "I'm not sure what it is that those people were after, but they did look like they meant business. I don't know that we should stay here tonight. Clearly, they know where to find us now, but if we get far enough off the road, it should make it sufficiently difficult to find us. We'd not need to go far, but if we stay here, they will know right where we are."

Earlier on the road, on the other hand, there was no way of you guys getting involved- I had several plans of escape. Besides, I'm sure we will get his gold eventually, if you know what I mean." Zeph says, with a wink. (OOC: And the only reason I was caught was because someone rolled a nat 20. /shrug. It happens.)

Zeph nods at Rollo's and Garret's words. "I also vote that we do not stay at this inn tonight. But, we should not walk out the front door. They could be waiting for us with some sort of trap. What do you guys say we rent out one room and sneak out the window? We got plenty of rope. Once we get down, we can sneak to the stables and grab our horses and take off before anyone spying can see we are gone. What do you guys think?" Zeph says, hoping his plan to throw off the hunters appeals to the crew.

"Or, as an alternative, we could sneak out the window and then search for our would-be assailants, to get the drop on them. There will be a conflict eventually anyways, as Rollo pointed out earlier. We always knew we were hunted, lets become the hunters." Zeph says, with a bit of an evil smile.

Feyjarl, realising that whatever could have happened, hasn't, leaves the toilets and re-joins the group.

Walking back into the main room of the inn, he moves to get a view of the outside and watches their "visitors" to see where they go.

---

Returning to the table, Feyjarl overhearrs the end of the conversation on where to sleep... "There's really no benefit to camping outside, we can't control the outcome of a battle there as we have no idea whether the three that were here we the full compliment of the visitors. The inn is a safer place to be as the access is restricted to a door and a window. In the wilds, the attacks can come from anywhere, they could even simple fire a torrent of arrows at us while we slept and there would be little we could do about it. Other than die."

He paused, "I vote that we stay here."

DM Kathy
Sunday November 30th, 2008 8:46:15 PM

You discuss the merits of staying at the inn or heading out immediately to find another place to stay.

Many of you feel that camping tonight is your best option, with Zeph suggesting the added twist of getting a room and leaving via the window.

Feyjarl would rather stay, arguing that a room is more defensible than an open campsite.

Since both plans involve acquiring at least one room, you can go ahead and do that. The busy innkeeper barely looks up as he collects your payment and grabs a key from the pegboard.

"Room 14. Third floor," he tells you.

You climb two flights of stairs and find Room 14. It is probably not the best room in the house, but it is perfectly adequate--especially if you plan to leave immediately. Two simple beds stand side-by-side under the sloped ceiling. A pitcher of water, with basin and towel, stands under the window. A simple clothes-press is next to the door.

The window looks out on the back of the inn, to a muddy little yard with a kitchen garden to one side and the stables across the way. Linens flutter from a clothesline strung near the garden.

We can even pretend half of us want to sell the book and the other half didn't. You know deception. We can pretend we're all mad and angry and brooding. It'll be fun."

"Well, it seems like we're leaving." Zeph says, somewhat apologetically to Feyjarl.

Zeph starts to take out his rope and make knots in it so that he, possibly Kiel, and whoever else is somewhat sneaky (Maybe Garret?)can climb down and go around the house.

"So Rollo, I'm guessing you, Axara, Feyjarl, and whoever doesn't want to climb down will exit through the front door in approximately 10 minutes. In that time myself, Kiel, and maybe Garret can climb down and sneak about the inn and keep a hidden eye on you guys. If you meet up with the poeple who wanted to buy the book, tell them you are willing to negotiate a price. When you have them chatting, we can strike from the shadows and get them by surprise (and get a surprise round in) . We should probably not kill any of them though, and we should keep one for questioning perhaps." Zeph says, hoping the group likes his plan.

"Wanna help me with the rope, Kiel? Keep your eyes and ears open just incase they plan on ambushing us." Zeph says

If the group agrees with his plan, then Zeph will be the first to climb down and sneak around the house and try to find a spot to watch the doorway to the Inn.

"I feel that I have wronged you my Lady, it was not my intent to do so, and for that I apologise," Feyjarl gets on one knee and kisses Axara's hand. He then moved away quickly to avoid embarassing Axara with his actions.

Feyjarl grabbed Kiel by his arm as he walked away, "Watch my back mate, I'll do the same. There's clearly something amiss here, and I have a feeling that we are walking into trouble. The fact that we know that could help though." Feyjarl smiled at his friend, trying to lighten the mood, "We'll be ok... more or less."

Feyjarl laughed quietly.

"Time for us to tag along yet do you think?"

Zeph watches what transpires and smiles a bit at it all. "Well, it happens a lot that people in a group disagree on what the best course of action is- especially with so many here. All we can do is put it to a vote and then act on what the group decided to do, right? Tell ye what, if this goes wrong, you can call the shots on the next big decision, no questions asked. We can even take turns on who is the leader." Zeph says, knowing good and well that a small argument over tactics can bring their quest to a grinding halt.

It is mitigating the damage that we need to focus on. Zeph proposes a plan where half the group exits via the window and circles around, while the other half exits the inn via the front door and openly seeks the man who spoke to them earlier. The plan is that the "sneaky" group will circle around and catch the representative and his companions off-guard.

Some of the group respond with enthusiasm, but others are uncertain. Absent any better ideas, however, you seem to be going forward with this.

[OOC: Trying to balance between moving the story forward and not riding roughshod over somebody's preferences.

If you are proceeding, I need to know who is in which group. I would also like appropriate skill checks. Climb, Hide, and Move Silently from the sneaky group Diplomacy and/or Bluff from the talkers, plus any other skills you end up using. Also, I'd like to know what your general strategy will be for finding the group, along with appropriate skill checks. Finally, Spot and Listen checks are always handy in situations like this. :) ]

I say those of us leaving out the front door talk about how much idiots the others are, how we will finish the mission ourselves. About how they aint risking their lives anymore for something so stupid, head to the stables, gather our animals and leave. Let them think we are dividing our forces and that we have the item (which we happen to have) and when they confront us, we will have suprise on our side. We will control the situation instead of them.

Correction: your current hare-brained scheme is Rollo's, not Zeph's. My apologies to you both. :)

You split up. Kiel, Axara, and Feyjarl (and Rollo?) head for the front door. Hmark, Zeph,, and Garret start down the rope.

Zeph slithers effortlessly down the rope, moving with catlike grace to the corner of the inn, alert for any signs of danger--or your quarry (you don't see either).

Hmark attempts to follow. His descent is neither effortless nor graceful, but he makes it down in one piece. He keeps himself hidden as best he can.

Garret leaves the room, but stops just a few feet down, unable to negotiate his way down the rope. [OOC: Zeph specifically said he was knotting the rope, so the Climb DC was only 5. You failed it, but you failed by less than 5. So, you didn't fall, but you weren't able to make any progress either. Roll again, and you can keep rolling until you beat the 5, provided you don't actually hit a negative number. :) ]

Meanwhile, the others leave by the front door. Axara and Feyjarl immediately get into the spirit of a public argument within the group. Their dust-up begins attracting onlookers.

"That's right!" comes a drunken shout from inside the inn. "Show 'er who's boss!"

"Don't take that from him, honey!" yells a woman in the road. "Pop 'im one!"

More shouts of encouragement follow, along with some lewd and anatomically unlikely suggestions.

From their vantage point, Hmark and Zeph can see most of this.

After twisting for a minute, he manages to untangle his foot and carefully maneuver his way to the bottom of the rope. He then disappears into the shadows and moves around towards the front of the tavern, looking for the others that they had spotted earlier in the night.

Garret finally makes it down the rope, and joins Zeph and Hmark at their vantage point. The three also look around, but do not see the people who approached you earlier.

However, Zeph does spot a young woman, a maidservant perhaps, taking clothes off a clothesline in a yard on the other side of the road. Judging from the length of the line, and the very full basket of clothes beside her, she has been out there for a while. Perhaps she saw the other group leave, and knows which way they went.

With that Zeph walks casually over to the woman taking clothes off the line, looking around him to make sure he is not being watched. When Zeph notices that the woman sees him, he gives a friendly wave and a smile. "Hello there lass. I was wondering if you saw some friends of mine come by this way. They exited the inn across the road (Zeph points across the road) what must have been less than 30 minutes ago. I must have lost track of time with the ruckus caused over there and all. One man is a bit taller than myself, he has brown hair, blue eyes, and a friendly smile. His leather jerkin is still dusty from the road. Two other companions with him are a slinder half-elf and a large brownie looking man. There may be more, but I am unsure because I only spoke with them for a brief time. If you know of which way they went and about how long ago, that would be extremely helpful." Zeph says, with smiles and gestures that show he is sincere, palms open, pointing his thumb over his shoulder at the inn and rolling his eyes when he says 'ruckus'.

This is getting kind of fun Zeph thinks to himself.

"If they're friends of yours," she says, "why don't you know how many there are?" [Apparantly, she has brains, not beauty.] She takes a shirt off the line, shakes it out with a brisk snap!, and begins folding it.

"Not that it's my business," she adds. With her chin, she gestures down the road--in the direction you have been travelling, and the direction that the rest of the party just went. "They went that way. I heard the big fellow say something about making camp."

She gives you a long look as you finish up and make your offer. "Well," she says. "Mistress won't like it." She hesitates, but then in a rush she says. "Yes, all right, why not? Come and find me, and we'll see."

Rollo rode on listening to Kiel's interpretation of his races short comings.

"I believe the ranger may be somewhat accurate with his insight that humans lifespans are to blame. Not because you act rashly, but because humans don't live long enough to get to the punchline. All things fail in the end. Not because the world is falling to gloom, or that the gods like to stick it to you when ever they get the opportunity, not saying that some don't, but not all.

"It is the fact that the universe's natural state is chaos, in fact I don't even think that it would understand order if you explained it to it. Order is something we, gnomes and elves included, invented to understand something that doesn't make a lick of sense. In the end all the planning, all the building, scheming, understanding gets shaken off like water from a wet dog. Human's just don't live long enough to see this fact, so they are the most apt to plan in the hopes of permanence. So they grow frustrated and blame the gods, and the plants, and the sky when their castles crumble and set off on crusades to bring order and impose their structure onto something that will never be contained.."

"That is why our plans fail, because all plans fail. The best thing we can do is embrace the chaos and ride it like the tide. The plan is merely tending the fire, it could rage out of control, but we play the odds."

"I'll tell 'em," he says doubtfully. "But you know how well everyone sticks to plans around here."

With that, the young man climbs aboard Stardancer, takes Zeph's horse in tow, and sets off downt he road at a quick trot. When he catches up with the rest of the group, he pulls up beside Kiel.

"Zeph met a girl who said our banana lovin' buddies came this way, talking about making camp. Zeph said him and Garrett would trail us about a quarter mile to make sure no one snuck up on us. He also said he thought we should try to find their camp, ask for a lot of money for the banana, and then jump 'em."

Hmark pauses to take a swig of water, then continues with a quick, nervous look at each side of the road.
"Personally, I think they're gonna jump us any minute now."

Having made his report, Hmark eases Stardancer to the back, and keeps his eyes peeled for nasty surprises.

With the new information, you quickly revise the plan. Kiel, Axara, Rollo, Selemar, Feyjarl, and Hmark will approach the camp openly and attempt to re-open negotiations with the man and his companions. Zeph and Garrett will try to sneak around behind them to attack.

[OOC: If I've placed you in the wrong group, please speak up. :) ]

Accordingly, the larger group begins looking for the proper encampment. You have a couple of false alarms, approaching camps who prove to be travelling merchants or peasants, taking advantage of the warm evening and saving money on inns. At last, however, Kiel spots a camp off the road, partly hidden by a strand of scrubby laurel bushes.

The sun has nearly set by the time you approach the camp. You can see figures near the campfire. Approaching closer, you recognize the man who spoke to you earlier at the inn, accompanied by the big fellow and the woman who had been seated nearby, feeding her pet. The three appear to be cleaning up after their evening meal. Of the half-elf there is no sign.

I guess I should follow the plan and be the first to attack, it better than them being the first. I hate to attack a woman from the shadows, but I know a wizard's Color Spray or Sleep spell could knock out two or three of our people. Zeph thinks as he pulls his bow back, arrow aimed at a vital point on the Wizardly woman. Then Zeph takes a quick look around Rollo's feet and his own for any signs of traps that could be set up (search=26)

Zeph looks at Garret, looking for approval to start the fight. If we didn't jump them, they may jump us later... we all decided this right? Not only me. I hope we don't kill any of them, we need to question them about who sent them on this mission to find us. Zeph thinks, trying to justify his actions.

Kiel is finally able to spot the hidden half-elf. As you had suspected, he has hidden himself near the camp's perimeter.

Selemar and Rollo attempt to keep the man talking. Their conversation is cut short, however, as arrows from Zeph and Feyjarl come flying into the camp.

Zeph's arrow strikes the woman, and she cries out. [OOC: You are too far away for Sneak Attack]

Hmark hesitates, his brown eyes flicking momentarily toward the man, and then back to the half-elf.

"On to the matter at hand. In this world you can trust so few things, it is why we have gold coins. Coins can not lie, cheat, steal, it is what it is, a piece of shimmering metal with a pretty drawing stamped into it. Metal is honest, it does not make promises, but holds up to its end. You seem to be a man who would understand that as you keep it by your side so readily in so many forms." Rollo indicates the man's rapier and gold pouch.

"The gold is honest, but so rarely it's companions. Merchants and traders are always out to get something for nothing, or for some hidden purpose. Honest gold is made accomplice to their deception. So let us be of gold and not speak of half truths and deals. Let us speak plainly, and honest, for I will not make a liar of my friends, or yours. Ruglio gestures to the wizard-looking woman. "This is Lia. Our other friends are presently hidden from view, guarding the camp. Perhaps you can meet at a later time.

"I am pleased to meet you, Rollo Nimbus, and thank you for your complements. Indeed, negotiations run much more smoothly if all parties remain civilized. That means you, too, Harbin," he says. "Why don't you sit down?"

Harbin does not sit down.

"What are we seeking?" Ruglio continues after an awkward moment. "I think you know the answer to that, but I have no objection to saying it aloud. Zeph remains hidden, listening.

So many questioning, only one answering. Its OK, at least we should get some answers. The real question though is what will we do with those answers? Perhaps the should ask if Sebastian's woman is behind any of this... what was her name again? Even if they don't want to say, maybe they could ask if their patron is in Rowena. That would at least be a clue. Zeph thinks, wishing he had a spell called Message to send his thoughts to Axara or Rollo.

Garret and Feyjarl look and listen for these hidden allies of Ruglio. You do not see anybody, although Garret thinks he hears somebody over on the other side of the camp.

Hmark keeps an eye on the dark elf, and is able to relax somewhat when the man shoulders his bow and picks up a kettle. He moves to the fire, prods it into a livelier flame, and sets the kettle on a flat stone next to it.

Kiel moves forward to ask some questions of Ruglio, and Selemar also comes forward to stand with Rollo and Axara.

"What do I know of the book?" says Ruglio, responding to Kiel. "I know that it is very old. It is magical, and unique. And I know that there are many--not just my patron--who are interested in it."

Sense Motive 26 Highlight to display spoiler: {Ruglio has given you the information about the book that he considers to be the most important. He may know a couple of other things about the book, but he considers them insignificant.}

"Oh, I have a mind of my own, milady," Ruglio says to Axara. With a sweep of his hand, he indicates the rest of his company. "As do we all. Our minds are happiest when our purses are full." To her arguments that the codex is actually a danger, Ruglio replies, "Ah, but what proof have you of that? Your word? Fair though you are, I cannot take everything you say on blind faith." He looks thoughtful. "And if it does prove to be a danger--why, we'll deal with it then. Perhaps there'll be yet more coin to be earned."

Sense Motive DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: {As far as you can tell, this is his honest opinion.}

"Hinted?" he says to Rollo, then sighs. "Oh, very well. I seek the Vaaphyn Codex, which currently rests in a custom-made lead-lined box carried in your backpack, Master Rollo. And if that is not plain enough for you, I cannot make it plainer.

"Our patron's name is Karsz. I don't expect it to mean anything to you, however; I said he was powerful, not famous.

Sense Motive DC 17 Highlight to display spoiler: {Ruglio is hiding something with regard to the name of his patron.}

"I have answered your questions, and you have heard my offer. Do we have a bargain?"

Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37]  d20+3=5 ; d20+9=17 ;

"At last he speaks plainly. As you seem to have information as to the contents of my backpack you will be aware that I have several rare books in my possession, including a fine copy of The Life of Sir Haakharn restored masterfully if I do say so myself. Have you read it? It is of no importance."
"Now, If it was that tome that you sought we would have a deal in the time it will take the tea to boil, but the Codex now that is a prize far greater than the pittance you have offered. So we do not have a bargain, but we hadn't reached that point in our negotiations so I will allow you to revise your approach and we shall come at this like proper merchants. That is if you are able to negotiate?

Rollo smiled, " I will assume that you will open with 50,000 gold pieces as that was your initial offer, a sad sum of money for something so rare and I will counter with 500,000gp, a price set beyond your meager holdings at this time I assume for if not you are a extremely foolish mercenary to have not absconded to a far off land with such a purse tucked in your ruck sack."
Rollo rises to his feet. "We arrive once again at an impass, one that is surely insurmountable at this juncture, but if you wish to continue this negotiation, we shall be in Rowena in two month's time. Perhaps we can set an appointment with your master there and bring this deal to a conclusion? "

Axara is only sure that Ruglio's opinion about the book is what is really believed. She smiles at him. "The reason I can tell you that the book is indeed incredible dangerous is that it can control people. How do I know that? I felt under its influence once. Luckily, I was stopped before I could perform a ritual from it. Others have not been as lucky and are dead as are some of their love ones. As your magic friend here about it. If she has any arcane power knwledge, she will confirm it. Now this patron of your, this Karsz, does he employ a woman/part time whore going by the name of Lilly? She sent a fool after u and he is worm meat now."

She waits to see if her words had any impact but Rollo takes the conversation in a different way. "Ah master of chaos, you surely liket o confuse us all "

"Ruglio, as Master Rollo has said, we all have a price. 500,000 gold pieces is only 62,500 per each one of us which is such a bargain for your patron. I would have asked much more but Master Rollo is in a giving mood."

Zeph sits behind his tree, looking about for any ambushers (Listen =16. Spot =24) and listening to the conversation.

That can't be the real name of his patron. Surely Axara will figure that out. I know I would lie if I were in his situation.

Then Zeph hears what Rollo says. Actually, thats brilliant Rollo. By asking them for an amount of money that they cannot possibly have right now, we can possibly send them back to their master to retrieve the amount of money while we escape with the book to continue our mission of destroying it. A clever distraction indeed. Zeph thinks, smiling, wondering if that is really Rollo's intentions, or if he is innocently offering to sell it.

He draws his sword, and his companions follow suit. Harbin, the big tough, had never put his away, and simply waits for a signal. The dark elf rises from his spot by the fire and draws his bow once more. The woman reaches for her spell components.

Move Action: Draw Long Bow and peek around tree

Garret readies an action.

[OOC: Jeff, in this kind of format, when you ready an action, it's generally best to go ahead and make the attack/damage rolls, just in case your ready goes off. This time, for example, your readied action would go off, but I have no rolls to look at to say whether you hit or missed. Take a look at Mike K's post as Hmark for an idea of what I'm looking for.]

Axara casts a spell, and a swarm of spiders appears on the woman.

[OOC: You only need to make a Concentration check if you take damage. However, maintaining concentration is a standard action, which means you cannot cast other spells as long as you're concentrating.]

Rollo steps back and also casts a spell.

[OOC: Adam, when you cast a spell with a save, please give me the save DC]

Feyjarl readies his bow.

[OOC: Zak, see my note to Jeff. If you ready, you probably want to include your attack/damage rolls.]

Kiel steps up, draws his blade, and attacks.

[OOC: Tim, drawing the sword is a move action, so you would only get one attack this round.]

Zeph fires a shot at the dark elf, catching the man right between the shoulder blades.

The wizard is covered in spiders, but she does not panic. She moves calmly away from the swarm, then cast a spell. Colorful lights burst in a 10-foot circle around Rollo and Axara. She hopes to catch both of you in the effect, but the spell isn't quite powerful enough [only 5 hit dice of creatures], so only Axara is affected. [Will save DC 15 or be hypnotized.]

The hostile action sets of Hmark's ready, and he fires a shot at the big tough.

[Mike K, disarm is melee only. We'll treat that as a regular attack roll; roll damage on your next turn.]

The half-elf shifts a little and fires at Hmark, but misses.

The big fellow strides up to Kiel and takes a swing at him, drawing blood [hit AC 23 for 6 damage].

The leader, Ruglio, dances to the other side of Kiel so nimbly he avoids a retaliatory attack. He thrusts with his rapier--but misses! Thanks entirely to that Bane spell, so nicely done, Rollo.

Badly wounded, the dark elf fires a return shot at Zeph before ducking back into the tent. His shot strikes true for 2 points of damage.

Selemar casts a Flaming Sphere, placing it in the leader's square.

Feyjarl fires at Harbin, the tough, giving him another solid hit.

If that Hold Person spell lasts for a minute or so, we can clean up this fight and tie up the big guy for questioning later... although the leader would probably have the most information. Zeph thinks as he sees his arrow pluck into the back of the now-paralyzed man.

Then Zeph sees the Dark Elf quaff a potion. Undo what I did eh? Zeph thinks as he begins to sneak up behind the Dark Elf.

Option A: If Zeph sees that the Dark Elf does not notice him as he drinks his potion, then Zeph will try to sneak up on him (Hide=15, Move Silent =26) to square L-8 or L-9, depending which is easier to hide around, and stab him in the back before he notices him (Hit AC 13 vs no dex modifier)

Option B: If Zeph sees that the Dark Elf does in fact see him as he drinks his potion, then Zeph will take a five-foot hop to square L-9 and feint (DC 18 sense motive check)as a move action with his Rapier. Then he will attempt to stab him again (Hit AC 13 vs no dex modifier if feint worked).

Damage in either case would be Base 3 + Sneak Attack 10= 13 Damage total.

Friday December 19th, 2008 9:01:34 AM

Axara sees the swarm going after Kiel and Harbin "Kiel sorry about the spiders. Swarns are hard to control. Do a coup de grace on the tough guy in front of you if you can "

Still staying concentrated, she addresses Ruglio "Rgulio, you dumb leader, you already lost your spellcaster and your muscle. You are are now underpowered. Do you value your life so little? Last chance to give up."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OOC: DM Kathy, did the swarn attacked Harbin too or just Kiel?

Hmark(ac 18, 13/24hp)  d20+10=29 ; d20+10=19 ; d8+2=7 ; d8+2=3 ;
Friday December 19th, 2008 10:01:54 AM

"Urf". Hrmark grunts at the impact of the arrow. Spiders and balls of flame and Axara talking race through his vision. But the chick with the bow is definitely the lad's most serious problem.

He steps to the side, lining up his shot. Red's string hums as the arrows continue to fly.

[5' step to F15. Attack H with two arrows.

Friday December 19th, 2008 11:19:11 AM

"Uncouth ruffians giving the noble art of fighting a bad name," Rollo moves up to the big guy now motionless and covered in spiders, and smashes his hammer into the big guys skull. "Your part is played, begone and recast."

Rollo will take his 5 foot step and Coup De Grace the big guy with his hammer for (2x3 for crit) 6 points(go gnome strength), he must make a fort save DC 16 or die. Bwahahahahah!

OOC: Sorry I rolled the wrong damage for the hook hammer, should be d8 (7x3 =21) He needs to save against 31.

Kiel [AC:18 - HP28/34]
Friday December 19th, 2008 6:01:57 PM

*as per the rules, whenever a crit is rolled, its not the damage rolled once times the crit multiplier. It it the damage rolled for each crit multiplier. ie Rollo, instead of 1d8-1=7x3 you would roll 3d8-3 (1d8-1 for each crit X)*

[OOC: Sorry, Kiel, I mis-typed your opponent. I did apply your first-round damage to Ruglio (both hits). He is pretty badly hurt, which is why he has tumbled back out of melee.]

DM Kathy  Vezd listen d20+7=26 ; Harbin Fort save d20+5=18 ; Vezd attack d20+4=11 ; Ruglio attack d20+7=12 ; Ghost attack d20+5=14 ; Swarm damage d6=1 ;
Monday December 22nd, 2008 12:20:23 AM

Vezd, the dark elf, did not see Zeph; he was too intent on his task. You attempt to sneak up on him. Unfortunately, he hears you coming and whirls at the last second. Your strike does not hit.

Garret fires a sling at Ruglio, the leader, and hits solidly.

Hmark fires back at the half-elf, wounding him in turn.

Rollo calmly steps over and clonks the big guy on the head. Or possibly on the kneecap. :) Either way, Harbin the tough collapses like a ton of bricks.

Axara continues to concentrate. [OOC: The spiders attacked Harbin, too.]

Vezd, the dark elf, yanks out his longsword and takes a sudden swipe at Zeph, but misses. Ruglio the leader, seeing the opportunity, moves over and also attacks Zeph. He also misses.

The half-elf snaps another shot at Hmark, missing, then takes cover behind a tree.

The spiders move forward, now covering both Kiel and Rollo. Each takes 1 point of damage! Each of you, make a Fortitude save against poison (DC 11) or lose 1 point of Strength. Also, make a Fortitude save against the swarm's Distraction power (DC 11). If you fail, you are nauseated for 1 round.

Combat Map

For those of you confused by the combat map, I had originally placed the characters before you knew their names. I therefore used designators rather than names. I did not change them after you met everybody, for fear of confusing things still further. Your opponents are:

Ruglio, the Leader (L)
Harbin, the Tough (T) (dead)
Lia, the Wizard (W) (down)
Ghost, the Half-elf (H)
Vezd, the Dark elf (D)

Kiel [AC:18 - HP28/34]  d20+7=9 ; d3=2 ; d20+7=26 ; d20+8=20 ; d8+4=11 ;
Monday December 22nd, 2008 2:52:25 AM

moving from h11 to j8
failed first fort check, losing 1 str. succeeded second fort check.

Moving in behind Ruglio opposite of Zeph, Kiel raises his two-bladed sword up, and with a top left to bottom right motion, he swings, connecting solidly.
*hit ac 22, rolled 20+2(flanking due to Zeph)*
*damage of 11*

You should of taken our deal. Your silence will be our answer to your patron.

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17]  d20+3=11 ; d3=2 ;
Monday December 22nd, 2008 7:56:49 AM

Garret watches the battle wind down as their opponents fall. He sees that the leader is still not going to give up, so he takes careful aim to ensure that he doesn't hit his friends. At the last moment, Zeph steps into his line of sight, so he pulls the sling down and the stone flies into the ground a good distance from the combatants.

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]  2d4+2=7 ;
Monday December 22nd, 2008 9:23:57 AM

Axara sees that the swarn has run out of ennemies and is attacking her companions.

She dismisses the spell, open to end it this turn to limit the damages to Rollo and Kiel.

"Sorry about the spiders guys. They will be gone very soon.[b]"

"[b]And Ruglio, you could have tasted my kiss but you will now taste my bite
"

She unleashes her magical energy dart, striking the leafer 3 times.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stop concentrating and tries to dispell the swarm is possible.
Cast Magic Missile on the leader. If he is already down, will strike the drow. Damages: 2d4+2 = 7

Spells: 0 6/6; 1 6/7; 2 3/4

Zeph AC19 HP31 HeroesMundaneItems  d20+7=20 ; d20+8=27 ; d6+2=7 ; 2d6=10 ; d20+10=21 ;
Monday December 22nd, 2008 10:09:44 AM

Zeph blocks the swipe from the Dark Elf with his shield and then his eyes go wide as he turns to parry Ruglio's rapier with his own.

Not good. Zeph thinks briefly until he sees Kiel flank Ruglio with him.

"Good show there. My attacks are always more effective when the enemy is sufficiently distracted." Zeph says, with a bit of an awkward smile on his face as he lunges for the flanked man's vital organs.

Option A: IF Ruglio is not taken down by Kiel's attacks and Axara's magic missile, then Zeph will attempt to stab him in a critical spot, using Kiel's flanking as a sneak attack opportunity.(Hit AC 22, Damage =17 total, 10 from sneak attack). (22 was from the +2flanking bonus) Then, move action will be to tumble to square N-8 (Tumble check=21, success, no AOO)

Option B: IF Ruglio drops from Kiel's and Axara's attacks, then Zeph will Feint as a move action to the Dark Elf (DC 27) and then make an attack, hit AC of 20, un-dex modified if the Feint worked. Damage total =17, 10 from sneak attack if feint worked. And Zeph will say something like, "You would be wise to do some investigation on potential employers before agreeing to risking your life." Instead of saying the "sufficiently distracted" comment.

Feyjarl (Zeph/Addison subbing)AC18 HP29 HeroesMundaneItems  d20+7=25 ; d100=92 ; d8+2=6 ;
Monday December 22nd, 2008 2:43:41 PM

Feyjarl moves as far as can to get a clear shot at the Half-Elf with his composite longbow. (Hit AC 25. %Miss due to concealment is 50% right? I rolled 92, PCs do highs not lows right? If so, then BING) Damage =6.

(Also, I was wondering since I didn't post for Feyjarl last round if he could move closer to the target last turn? Like around F-13. Then this turn he could move to about D-8 and draw his sword after he shoots his bow this round)

Hmark(ac 18, 13/24hp)  d20+11=29 ; d8+1=5 ;
Monday December 22nd, 2008 3:31:08 PM

The half elf tries to duck behind a tree.
"Oh, I don't think so," Hmark murmurs.

The young archer moves to the side to clear his field of view. Just in time to catch sight of the half-elf dodging a crossbow bolt. "You got all kinds of problems, doncha?" he murmurs again, sending an arrow his way.

[Move to C10, attack H.
hit ac29 for 5 hp damage]
