DM Bob & Carla Wednesday December 10th, 2008 10:40:59 PM Anrete and Beren creep up close to the opening. The area surrounding the hole is littered with bones and a foul stench emanates from the hole itself. Beren begins to return to ther group to report when Jet and Alexi spur their mounts and begin thrashing about in the tall grasses. Keela and Fatine can only watch with wry amusement at the antics of their companions. How surprised must they be when first one head and then another emerges from the den site, startled by the heavy hooves and yelling.
The creatures bolt from the den site and stand on all fours outside the entrance. Each is as big as a man, Their heavily built frames are covered in mottled gray and brown scales. It is immediately clear that their large jaws and clawed feet are those of a predator. The two beasts separate and immediately begin to search out the noise that has distracted them. Only when they turn to sniff the air do you see that each of them bear a small pair of wing atop their muscles shoulders.
[OOC: The black circle is the entrance hole to the den and the gray shapes are large rock outcroppings. All squares are 5 feet. D1 and D2 are the creatures]

The sight of the two creatures spurs the adventurers into action. Alexi and Jet both charge forward on horseback to attack them. The two focus their efforts on the slightly larger and darker of the two beasts, but only Jet's blow lands. Despite his positioning, the creature manages to evade the former Fists lance.
Several arrows arc in at the same time as the horsemen engage D2. Two narrowly miss the horsemen while two more strike the creature. The unique fletching of Beren is evident on one of the arrows, while Caelnin's trademark colours can be seen on the other. [OOC D2 is now in melee and future ranged attacks should be adjusted accordingly]
Fatine wonders what these creatures might be and comes to the conclusion that they must be of the dragon family, but she does not know specifically what they are. She manipulates one of her dolls and feels the woldsblood deep beneath her. She can only be dissapointed when her spell seems to have no effect on her target. Likewise, Keela's spell is also ineffective against the beasts, however, Jet and Bantom enter the area of the spell just as it goes off [Please make a will save vs DC 13 or fall asleep]
The creatures now retaliate, and as foretold by the group's leader, D2 aims his breath weapon at Jet. A 30' cone of breath envelops both Jet and Anrete [Please make will saves vs DC 17 or be slowed for 7 rounds]
D1 then moves in behind Jet and launches itself at the fighter/cleric, snapping at his leg [Hit DC 13]

Caelnin watches the horsemen move towards his target and becomes slightly annoyed, as he now has to be wary of targets that are not meant to be targets, but he doesn't take it as a disadvantage, but as a challenge to overcome.
"Now it's the time to focus, Caelnin. You aren't called a sharpshooter for nothing!" Caelnin reinforces to himself as he takes another 2 arrows, takes a deep breath and shoots them in a high arc above Beren's head. The first one flies hazardously to the right of the target, while the next one seems to hit the spot.

The charge of the two knights takes Beren slightly by surprise,as he was focusing on his target. He moves slightly closer to his intended target (D2, headed eventually for N-15), and fires two more arrows at the wounded beast. He is surprised when both sail over the animals body and into the rocks. He must be more unsettled by the sight of these things than he thought.

Jet is used to danger and it is apparent that these creatures are now breathing and snapping at him. This gives him confidence that he once again is the target of the mighty and even if he drops, like he had with Wido, the others will have the ability to over come these creatures.
{Oh, wow, oh so sleepy all of a sudden. I must ooovveerrr comme the ffaattigue.} he thinks to himself as fatines spell tries to effect his will, but with a shake of his head, he focuses once again on the enemy.
With the breath attack however, he feels slowed, but when he does not take damage, he calls for his comrades to give them a round to surrender. "If you understand me creatures, surrender now and you may have mercy, but at this moment, you appear a danger to the area, with your latest victim's demise!"
The group can see, Jet flip his weapon with a turn of his wrist to hit them with the flat of his blade for further damage to be subdual.
OOC: Just to confirm DM, the slow is a will save, not a fortitude save? If it's a Fortitude save, Jet is successful. Also, "Slowed" is not in the Condition Summary of the SRD, so I do not know exactly what that means.
Bantom, unable or untrained to cause subdual damage, is not commanded to attack this ropund.

For just a moment it looks as if the adventurers have bitten off more than they can chew. Beren sends two arrows wide of the mark and Alexi misses badly with his attempt to intimidate the beast before him with a slap of his sword. Anrete and Jet are both slowed by the foul smelling gas emanating from their foe and both miss with their attacks. Caelnin manages to sink another arrow into D2, but the creature appears hardly bothered by the damage.
Only when Fatine casts her spell does the tide begin to turn in their favor. D2 spins and roars in panic as it can no longer see it's foes. Unable to see it claws and snaps at Jet. It manages to sink it's teeth into the cleric's leg, but it's claws go wide of the mark. [Hit AC=19 for 5 dmg; please make fort save vs DC 17 or take 5 points of dex damage from poison]
Keela also casts a spell, and a dark ray leaps from her fingers and strikes the D1, lighting up the beast in an eerie glow (critical confirmed). The vicious predator slumps under the effects of the spell, but it's primal nature drives it on. The weakened beast bites and slashes at Jet but cannot get past the cleric's armor.
Beren manages to sink a single arrow into the now blinded D2 while Fatine encourages the men to stop playing around and finish this messy business.

The majority of the adventurer's concentrate their attacks on one of the two beasts (D2). Keela launches a scorching ray at the blinded creature, catching it squarely in the neck and chest. It stumbles slightly before being struck first by Alexi and then by Lobo. The final blow is struck by the horse, and the beast slumps to the ground, surrounded by its adversaries.

He turns to Jet and asks, "It may be foolish of me, but I think it would be much to our benefit to keep this thing from bleeding to death. If we can take it back alive, we would be better off." He looks down at it and tries to see if it is dead, or dieing. "We can tie its wings and muzzle its snout. Jet, can you tell if is dead? Would you be willing to stop its bleeding?"

Alexi thanks Jet and takes the rope while calling for Anrete. "Anrete, since you seem to be a little sluggish, let Mikal and Beren make sure Keela doesn't get into any trouble and help me tie this creature up."
Then, without looking up from his task, asks Fatine, "Fatine, can you send Col to follow the mate and see where it goes? Sorry your doll didn't work."
"Caelnin, keep your bow and a sharp eye out while we tie this creature up."
Alexi start with the jaws and ties them shut, then leads the rope to the two front legs and ties them together good, and lastly he leads the rope to the back legs and ties them together. (OOC: presumably this is a 50foot rope).
"Anrete, what do you think?" Alexi asks as he steps back to inspect his work. The head can't move much because it is attacked to the two front legs. The two front legs can't move much because they are tied together and attached to the head and back legs. And the back legs are similarly restricted by being tied together and attached to the front legs.
OOC: naturally, if Jet can't save the creature, Alexi will repost to fit.
DM Bob & Carla Wednesday December 17th, 2008 10:44:21 PM Fatine puts away her dolls and approaches the downed beast for a closer look. She has never seen such a creature before, clearly dragonoid, but not a dragon. Alexi and Jet grudgingly decide to spare the creature's life. Alexi believes the creature might cling to life, but when Jet's spell fails to bring about recovery, they must conclude it was too late.
Caelnin and Beren take potshots at the remaining beast as it flies off. Twice arrows hit and twice the creature falters in mid-air but recovers and continues away out of range.
Keela thinks better of wasting a shot and takes it upon herself to enter the den of these fearsome creatures. The hole reeks of foulness and gets worse the further she descends. It takes all of her concentration to avoid vomiting from the smell. Some 10 feet into the knoll, the tunnel expands into a small, roughly circular chamber. Two depressions in the dirt mark where the two predators must have slept. The remainder of the den is littered with the skeletal remains of its' prey. Many of the bones are picked clean, but some retain shreds of skin and flesh. Beetles scurry back and forth across these bones picking the last scraps of flesh from them. A cursory scan reveals that most of the bones look as if they came from large grazing animals, but here and there, among the debris, lie bones and skulls that Keela easily recognizes as being humanoid. Her search of the chamber is cut short by a heave in her stomach...

A short sprint to Huethira's side, he leaps to the saddle, but misses the stirrup and takes a moment for a proper mount.

Jet is not to upset at the wasted spell. He did try to do some subdual damage to the beast, but a bow and arrow, without blunted tips on the ammunition, could not do such to a creature. He can't blame the archers, nor does he, for being excellent shots. If Jet had been alone like the creatures last victim, him and Bantom might have shared the same fate.
"Yes, we do! I don't know exactly what that thing is, but if it is a genetically engineered creature of the creature we saw in the Ahote vision, then it may lead us right to him and his hide out." Jet recalls the waking dream they had when they first spoke to the native people of the land."
Jet cals for Keela, "We can come back to look for treasure latter M'Lady. Look for a tabard or some personal effects that would identify someone from Bryn Baraz!" He shouts down the hole, not in an agry tone, but not knowing how deep it is, "Preferably the banner their leader would have carried like the one we have!"
He tries to fit himself down the hole also, but if he is to large in his armor, will back out before he gets stuck.

He then returns his lance to its slot in Lobo's saddle and pats Lobo on the neck, "Well done once again, my Boy."
By then they are talking about chasing the surviving dragon-like creature. He's skeptical about the idea that it is linked in some form or fashion to the Ahote dream but knows it is pointless to spend time speculating about it. "We get this carcass back to Bryn Baraz for identification and we'll know whether it is merely a creature of these plains or some other thing. Someone can be sent to the Ahote village and describe it to them. They have a better understanding of the creatures that live out here than we do."
Then Fatine rails at him. "Don't get your undies in a wad, Fatine," he mumbles, not looking at her. "Col is a smart bird and he would know how to stay high enough, and far enough, to be out of danger. He is in more danger from hawks and eagles just flying around doing your errands than following a wounded, lumbering dragon-creature."
He then turns to Fatine and walks up to her, but instead of looking at her, he looks at Col sitting on her shoulder. "She don't give you the credit you deserve. You are welcome on my shoulder any time," and he slips a sly wink at Fatine.
Once back in the saddle again, he move over to Keela and says, "Don't scare me like that again." He tries to smile as he adds, "there may have been young ones in there that could have seriously harmed you."
Hefting his lance, he readies to chase after the wounded mate.

The retreating beast is still visible as it flies off to the northwest, so there is no need to spend precious time on following a blood trail. Once on horseback, the group finds they can make ground on their adversary if they spur their horses to a gallop. [two ride checks will be sufficient to catch the beast]. OOC: if i remember correctly, both Jet and Anrete are slowed. That's ok though.
IC: Little time was wasted by Caelnin and Beren as they charged off after the fleeing surviving beast, leaving the others behind, Jet and Alexi seeing if they can save the larger one from dying, and Keela checking out the cave.
By the time Jet determines the creature is truely dead, Keela comes out of the cave, rather pale looking. Beren and Caelnin are halfway to the fleeing mate and Alexi is chidded by Fatine for suggesting Col follow it.
Alexi mounts Lobo about the time Caelnin and Beren get close enough to shoot at the fleeing mate. Meanwhile, Jet is slowly moving towards the cave to check it out, still under the effects of the creature's breath weapon. Anrete kicks the dead one and mounts Copper in hopes of slowly catching up with Caelnin and Beren.
OOC: This is about as close as I figure how the action has been since the death and flight of the creatures'. Anyone have a problem with this? I'm just trying to piece all the action together. I figure it has been only about two, maybe three rounds of action since we killed the first one and the other one fled. DM's, if this is way off, let us know. :)

At that he spurs Lobo (Ride check Spur DC15= 11,20; 3pts dmg for spurring). At first, Lobo seems sluggish too, but soon sees the freedom of the open plains and takes off. DM Bob & Carla Tuesday December 23rd, 2008 12:14:12 AM Caelnin and Beren gallop after the retreating creature, and Beren manages to sink two more arrows into its scaly hide. It falters in flight once again before recovering and veering northwards in a vain attempt to throw off its pursuers. The two elves find they can easily keep up to the creature and they can see that it is badly wounded. Alexi charges after his two companions, keeping them in sight as they too veer northwards in pursuit of their quarry. Anrete keeps pace with the former fist, a wild look in his eyes.
Jet secures the knoll and slowly recover from the effects of the breath weapon. The cleric helps Keela from the hole and enters the lair of the two beasts. He too is greated by the foul odor of rotting flesh. Scavenging insects scuttle out of his path as he searches the skeletal remains. In time he is able to ascertain that at least 9 humanoids have been devoured by the two beasts. His medical training is sufficient to determine that two were dwarves and two were at least partly elvish, the remainder appear to be human, all except one that must be a half-orc. Among the grisly remains, Jet finds three totem bags similar to those giftted to the group by the Ahote. In addition, there are three chain shirts, two of which would appear to have been manufactured by master armorers, One of these would appear to have been fitted to a dwarf based on its size. There are also three belt pouches, a cloak, two finely crafted quivers, each with a dozen arrows, two curved knives similar to those used by the Ahote, and two rings, one of which is still attached to a finger. Everything else is too badly damaged to be of use.
Fatine keeps Keela company as she recovers from her ordeal in the hole. Col remains close by.

Jet thinks back to the hunting party that had left. Since they left The Float he has come to know most everyone in the community and attempts to identify the remains of the dwarves, the elfish one and the half orc, by old scars that may be present on their bones.
Jet also looks at the marrow of the large leg bones in an attempt to determine the time of death by the hardness of the the fleshy meat that provides blood to the system. Obviously though, he has focused more on his fighting prowess then on any forensic skills and decides to just bag anything that appears to be from the Ahote or Bryn Baraz and hauls it out of the hole.
Once everything he can find is outside he bags the remains seperatly attempting to determine which remains belong with which skull and ties them onto Vaya with what armor and other items that can still be of use.

Then perhaps a speak with dead will give you permission to carry the bones of our brethren. The injured beast continues it's ponderous flight away from it's pursuers. Injured badly, it is incapable of much speed, and it's undersized wings struggle to keep it aloft. The final two arrows stagger it in mid air and send it crashing to the ground where it commences to bleed out. Caelnin, Beren, Anrete and Alexi are now several hundered yads from the knoll which remains easily visible behind them.
Jet puts his medical training to use and begins sorting the grisly remains as best he can. Although some things are obvious, the ring belongs to the finger it is on, the sorting of the badly dismembered corpses is more difficult than anticipated. There are multiple corpses that, to the best of his abilitie, are anywhere from several days to several months old. The cleric intercedes when Fatine selects a small bone from the pile for future use. Keela also objects and the witch switches the bone for some scales from the dead creature.

Dey should know deir brothers an' sisters be gone, and have dee chance to reclaim what be deirs." Fatine helps Jet pack everything carefully into a saddlebag, then mounts and is ready to go.

"We should all have a Will and Testament. It is my intention to see that if anyone that has passed in our possession do, we determine what it is and allow Garth to decide what is what. If something belongs to the Ahote I believe it should be returned."

Alexi sighs with relief as the last draco-creature plumets. "Children," he mumbles as Caelnin shows off. But he did have to admit it was exhilarating to see the two archers' skills with a bow while riding a galloping horse.
He brings Lobo up to the fallen creature and answers Caelnin, "If it is still alive, we can stop the bleeding. A simple healing spell should do the trick."
He kneels down beside the animal and checks to if it still alive.
Heal Check d20+1 = 5.
Alexi can't determine anything, unless it suddenly rears up to bite him.

OOC-sorry, I did not see the DM post on my screen before the last post.
Beren is glad that the beast is dead, but he does not celebrate the way that Caelnin does. He stops to make sure the animal is dead, then walks beside Red as he returns to the others, giving his big horse a breather after the chase.
When he arrives, he takes a sack from his saddle bags, and rubs his horse down with it before doing anything else.
"Are we ready to continue on, or shall we camp here?" (Not sure what time of day it is)

Rolling out a bedroll, he finds what wood is available and starts a small fire, then begins making a stew. Even if the group does not camp here, at least they can have a hot meal after the battle.
DM Bob & Carla Thursday January 1st, 2009 11:53:55 PM Caelnin, Beren, Anrete and Alexi determine that the creature is truly dead. They drag the beast back to the knoll behind their horses and deposit it next to the other. Jet, Fatine, and Keela have arranged the recovered items and inspected them and are now in the process of wrapping them for transport. Discussions ensue about if and how to transport the remains of any of the victims back to Bryn Baraz and just what to do with the beasts. As they entertain different ideas, a small line of dust is spotted from across the plains to the north and east.
Caelnin AC:16 HP:21/21 (Sub/Al) d20+8=15 Friday January 2nd, 2009 8:32:42 AM
Caelnin rides back to the knoll, a elfish grin upon his face.
"We got this one. Couldn't capture it alive, though. Sorry, Jet."
"Looks like they had a taste for people," he adds, at seeing the contents of the cave brought out into the light of day. "Good thing we brought the second one down after all."
When signs of approach are spotted from the northeast, the elfish sharpshooter nocks an arrow, holding it loosely in one hand. He stands casually behind some low cover to await the approach.
OoC: added a Spot Check of 15 to that.
Beren(AC 18, HP 23/23 Red AC 13, HP 25/25) d20+7=27 ; Friday January 2nd, 2009 1:14:18 PM
As soon as Beren sees the dust cloud, he literally melts into the surrounding grasses. Even his companions, who saw him leave, cannot see the ranger as he conceals himself with his bow. Whoever this is, he wants to have to advantage in their encounter.

Jet (AC: 18, HP: 23/28) Bantom (AC: 19, HP: 42) Second Post Friday January 2nd, 2009 5:59:22 PM
Jet looks at the coming line of something, then looks to his comrades. "This might not be a good thing we face my friends. Whatever happens, I will take full responsibility for the deaths of the creatures if some think what we did was wrong. Hopefully they will have mercy on the rest of you. However, if what we did was a good thing, then we may all take the credit."
Jet worries for his friends and almost tells them to leave without him so he may face whatever comes this way, but somehow he does not believe they would follow such an order, so he decides to just take whatever comes his way, since he did indeed draw first blood on the beasts.

"Don' assume me want any mercy, Big Man," Fatine reples. Whistling, she waits for Col to appear, then points at the distant line of dust. "Go fly. See what dat be over dere. And be careful!" she calls as an afterthought.
Alexi (AC: 17, HP:28/28) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:34/37) Saturday January 3rd, 2009 4:57:25 PM
Alexi is looking over the two creatures, wondering what part to take as a trophy, some teeth, claws, an eyeball, when word is given of someone or something aproaching.
Responding to Jet he says, "Well, since there's just about every kind of bones in this den, Ahote included, I hardly think any smart creature out here on the plains will be complaining much. However, It's best be on our guard. I'll go along with whatever you say, Jet, but no point in straying from the truth. Just state it as it happened, from where we found the broken spear, to here."
With that, he readies his shield and lance.
Keela Sunday January 4th, 2009 9:04:09 PM
"I really don't think that will be necessary, Jet." Keela tries to sound confident, but she looks worried.
As her companions gather, she asks, "should we continue with our planned patrol, or should we return immediately to report?"
DM Bob & Carla Sunday January 4th, 2009 10:02:03 PM
The two scouts take cover behind the rocks near the entrance to the den and await what comes. The rest ready themselves for battle, while Fatine sends her crow aloft to scout out the situation. Jet devises a plan to take whatever blame may come their way for the death of the two creatures, but Alexi doubts that it will be necessary. Col scans the ground below, peering through the small dust cloud raised by the approaching riders...for even at the knoll it is now apparent that 8 riders approach on horseback. Fatine detects nothing other than idle curiosity from her avian lookout.
Caelnin eventually recognizes the advancing riders as Ahote, although he recognizes none of them from a distance. They ride in a straight line and head directly for the party. From some 200 feet away they pull their horses to a stop while a single rider advances and calls out in Ahote.
Jet (AC: 18, HP: 23/28) Bantom (AC: 19, HP: 42) Sunday January 4th, 2009 11:35:20 PM
Jet tells his friends "Stay twenty feet behind me as I approch him", as he mounts Bantom and slowly rides toward the lone figure, at the same time openly sheathing his weapon. A show of disarming himself in full view. A sign of peace. He also pulls the token he was given when first they met the Ahote hoping it is recognized as a sign of friendship, a small totem bag on a leather chord. The bag is branded with the mark of the Ahote, a crude depiction of a clump of grasses with a spear protruding from it.
Caelnin AC:16 HP:21/21 (Sub/Al) Monday January 5th, 2009 8:12:45 AM
"Not sure what to think of a group that hides its numbers by riding single file," Caelnin speaks his opinion out loud. He hangs back with the arrow still casually nocked in his bow. "Especially when you consider that the people riding toward the bath would be sucking all of the dust kicked up by the ones riding in front, you'd have to think that they wouldn't do this without some reasonably powerful intent."
The elf looks around for his fellow elfish bowman and finds that Beren is nowhere in sight. That's either very good. Or ... it's very bad.

Alexi (AC: 17, HP:28/28) Lobo (AC: 19, HP:34/37) Monday January 5th, 2009 10:07:26 PM
Alexi is slightly amused at the discussion of single file marching order but doesn't take his eyes off the Ahote.
He puts his lance in it's staddle socket briefly while fumbling for his Ahote bag. Once it is in plain view dangling from his neck, he hefts his lance again. Lance held pointing up, he casually urges Lobo forward to keep at least tweenty feet behind Jet.
Keela Monday January 5th, 2009 10:26:13 PM
Keela stays behind the leaders and tries to look harmless. She doesn't have to try very hard.
