Jancassis Explains It All

This and that/DM Buzz
Thursday December 18th, 2008 7:52:20 PM

Walter I understand why you would feel turned off by the situation the group was in and I need to be honest with you all, that I was unprepared to jump in DMing this game. I was really just an advisor to Jamie and still hoped up on narcotics when I took the position, so it was a slow start for me. I also do not like the situation you guys have been put in. You were to deal with a dangerous threat with Viscous and I want this blight on the land to end before you guys face something as dangerous as her. If you underestimate my ability to be evil and cunning, I will wipe you guys and that's not something the players want with their first DM battle, I hope.
Also, I was to either finish the module and start a two part module taking you to the end of the year, or making this module a bit longer to take you through the end of the year. I chose the latter, because I believed I could set up the next module while milking this one. To be clear, something serious would have to happen to me, for me to be leaving as your DM.

Now, to carry on....

OOC: I need to know who is going to the Catacombs. Those characters, if you go no where else but the market place or "good side" of town, need two spot checks each.

Vauhwyt calls upon her that seeks revenge for answers to some questions. Vauhwyt only
Highlight to display spoiler: { Vauhwt completes the casting of the scroll and can tell right away that more then just a simple Commune is happening, but a visualization of things that have occurred. You see a large meeting hall, where heartseeded Aisildurians from Allenport Outpost sit on one side of a table, people from Acid City sit on another side, the third side sits council people from Aectes and on the fourth side is a group from Abus. They all sign a charter, providing fresh food from these cities and fish from the lake to orphans of the Culverwood. The Ga'alians initiated this accord in an attempt to better the relations of the surrounding area and gain more support toward their god.

Then, the death of the heart seeds left them mostly empty and angry at their loss. They feel that it was their good will toward those that were once their enemies that allowed this to happen. Ambassadors from Aisildur visited each of the cities and demanded with the prospect of war that the charter be abandoned. Fearful of the repercussions of such a threat, all those that have signed the treaty abandoned their promise to help those in need.

Now Vauhwyt watches as the Avatar of Jancassis visits those that were present at the table and leaves her mark upon the land and lake. Many creatures of different planes now plague the cities killing children when possible and others when noticed. The populace board themselves up in their homes. The soldiers of the towns die in glorious battles against the never ending horde of monsters that plague their lands.

You now see, it has been somewhat recent that the four sides meet again to contemplate their situation and is now sending, once again, that which is promised, but you know, it is not enough for now you see a human skull shaped alter at the bottom of the lake, it's mandible not present, surrounded by a yellow substance one can only guess is the blight of acid which spreads through the area.. Around the alter are also volcanic vent leading from the earth where magma turns to lava, the steam attempting to thwart your vision. It would take considerable resources to navigate the many vents of the area and endure the magma of the liquid rock rivers before you could get to the alter through the earth.

Lastly, you see the group traveling through the water, descending deeper into the warm lake with you in the lead. Slaad, Salamanders and demons of different types approach you, but upon seeing you carry the horn avoid the group unless attacked. Once the yellowish aura of the alter is reached, anyone not holding the horn and entering the area quickly succumbs to the acid and dissolves into nothing. You however place the horn on the alter, the yellow aura dissappears and the alter turns to salt, slowly dissolving as those summoned from other planes return to the Lands of Rest, Realms of Shadow and Koshe-Marr. No word is given on the Silver Dragons, Viscous or on other tasks one must do first.

It is here, you awake in a cold sweat, your body drenched and weak. These symptoms with a slight headache plagues you for an hour.
}

Those that leave the estates receive a token they must return to the guards at the front gate with a warning not to lose them. They exit the compound and notice many similar types of estates like Zills, with different art work and subtleties, but all the walls about the same size. Here and there are symbols to the different gods of the Wold, and of Testing.

A small walk of an hour takes you into a bustling city by mid day, where the hallow eyes of Ga'alians and worshipers of Alemi walk side by side without thought as the guards of the city keep a steady watch on all those around, stationed on every corner of every block of the large market place. Anything can be found here, from a cobbler to a fish market and in the middle there is a lone ten foot by ten foot by ten foot building with an arched entrance and the face of a gargoyle hangs on the top of the arch, all made of dark brick. Upon approaching you see steps down leading to a large single wooden door bound by iron with a sign burnt into the dark wood "Catacombs"

Malgant waits and watches Vauhwyt as she tries several tims to read the words on the scroll and activate the prayer contained within it (If he is allowed that is). Once he is sure that she is safe and in no danger from the visins she receives, he heads to the temple of Domi that is within the estate. Taking a deep breath to steady himself he utters a blessing to Domi, and enters.

After her bath, Vorelle chooses one of the open guest rooms. She is not the least dismayed by the lack of sheets, and happily spreads her own bedroll over the mattress. Champ, of course, sleeps nearby.

The next morning, she remains outside the temple, throwing a stick for Champ to fetch and waiting for news.

DM Buzz: Just to clarify, there is no temple outside. There is a small chapel on the first floor, inside the house to Domi and another to Panthon, though.

Once that is settled Malgant heads to the catacombs to see about getting a wand of resist elements so that he can keep water breathing memorized for the final push to the altar, just in case they have to swim for the last lengths of the trek.

Vauhwyt (AC19, HP85) and Mookie (AC15, HP42)
Monday December 22nd, 2008 3:53:00 PM

Vauwyt is a little more than somewhat stunned when she is done with her divination. She is shaking and sweating. But she is glad of the news that she can now tell the group.

The people of Eastern Aisildur -- the liontuar recounts -- swore to take care of the orphans of the Culverwood. But after the heartseeds died, they broke those oaths. That's why they are being punished by the Lady of Vengeance, as they deserved, with frog demons and acid.

Since then, the oathbreakers have begun to fulfill their oaths again. So the Lady is willing to allow us to end the punishment.

There's an altar under the lake shaped like a jawless skull. It is sitting in a really strong acid. And there is lava too. And steam. We can try to go there. If we have the horn, the demons will ignore us. If we can get through all that, then we can put the horn on the altar, and end the curse. But the acid may claim one or more of us before the end!

"I have a killer headache," says Vauhwyt.

OOC: Guys, go to the Catacombs and ask for the items you want to purchase. Feel free from now on to post what you want when you grab your ticket so that the staff can expedite your transactions.

I also need to know, does anyone go to the docks with Bart? If not, do Val and Malgant go anywhere else before returning back to the estates?

I want to get this worked out before I finish up this area and we move on back to the island the following day.

She will go alone, if she must. She thanks the dragon, relates what she has learned to the host, and is grateful for the help.

Malgant and Val return to the estate without Bart. Malgant visits the chapel on his return for private thoughts.

Bart Highlight to display spoiler: { Let me know in a private post what actions Bart decides to take or if he returns to the estate before dinner.}

Vauhwyt rests her head and after a few hours recovers from her Commune ordeal, with plenty of time before dinner.

Vorelle and Champ wander the grounds until dinner. Many pleasant sights do they take in.

Lorth stays to himself and is addressed before dinner is served as to the time.

Appolo decides he can not get more magic from the Catacombs and gets cleaned up before dinner.

Aztyr reminisces of the past until the smells of cooking brings her and Jynx back to the present.

Bardamion comes down the stairs and greets everyone before he mentions he must pray for a bit before dinner.

Zill stays near the dinner table talking with those guests that wish to, or reading a book on "The dynamics of physics."

If anyone wants to speak with Zill before dinner you may make mention of the conversation in your post.

A small dinner bell is rung and food begins to be brought out on silver platters as well as fine drinks of many types and a carafe of milk.

Malgant emerges from the chapel after speaking to Bardamion. He still looks troubled but looks more at ease than he did when he went in there. Catching Val, and Zill's attention before dinner he speaks to them both about the shady men in town.
" Zill, a group of men, a wizard and his bodyguard stopped us on our way back from the catacombs. They were not threatening, in fact despite being shady the were quite cordial. They mentioned that you were 'endangering the wold' and that you were dealing with 'affairs best left undisturbed by those who do not have the power to deal with them'. Naturally Val and I were concerned, but they would not say anymore about who they represented or what their intentions were. They wanted a layout of your home and the tokens that we were given to guarantee our passage back into your compound. They were paying quite handsomely. What worries me is that Bart went off on his own and has not returned yet. They may have tried their hand at a more direct method of gaining the token from him since he was alone."

Their organizations was willing to pay well for my knowledge in the amount of ten thousand gold pieces

I asked him more info and he said

"Our organization is a private society of scholars and Lady Zill medels in the affairs of the past with things that are quite dangerous to the Wold if they were to be found and used. Needless to say we can not go into to much detail without endangering you as well, but I can assure you that the only things we are interested in is the power of magic and knowledge of where to locate it before those without true power use this knowledge in ignorance." The man easily explains and continues, "If you are interested, please follow me back to the hotel room and we will collect the information and pay you handsomely as a result."

Dinner is served/DM Buzz
Sunday January 4th, 2009 9:10:36 PM

Malgant comes out of his meeting with Bardamion, feeling a little better about his past. Bardamion remains expressionless. Some may think his face would break if a smile were to dare cross his lips.

Bart returns in time for dinner and has a private meeting with some of his group about his encounter by the docks. Appolo thinks Zill needs to be told of the situation and Bart agrees.

As the dinner bell rings, Zill sits at one end of the large dining room table and Bardamion sits at the other end. The group may sit where they like anywhere in between.

Malgant is the first to mention the encounter with the mage and his body guards and the smile that seems to always be present fades quickly. Bart then mentions his encounter as a similar occurance and her visage almost goes white. Thoughts cross her face as she begins to ponder the situation. Bardamion places his hands on the table and stares across at his mother. "It appears they have found us mother, but the wards on the estate should hold them for now."

Zill nods her head at Bardamions words but says nothing. Her composure beginning to return.

Bardamion continues, "Our work is to important to allow strangers to become involved and possibly become the targets of these people that seek us. I know we have not had assistance in decades, but we don't know if this group of people are capable of the undertakings we need to have performed."

Zill looks up and across the table, almost absent minded of the groups presence, "I was sent by Pantheon to assist them, they must have some merit, would you not agree?"

Bardamion responds, "Their merit is not what I question mother, it's their power that is in question. I do not say they are not honorable. I have seen that with my eyes, but do we really have another option if they were to fail? What if they were to spill our secrets, with or without pressure through spell or torture?"

Zill looks down at her empty plate and it is at this time, the food begins to arrive on large platters with flagons of many types of drink. Beauford begins serving plates of food to the guests first until everyone including the host and hostess have a plate. Zill then dismisses him. "We are not to be disturbed unless of emergencies Beauford." The butler politely responds, "Of course mistress. I will be in the kitchen seeing to the cleaning and I will lock the outer doors for now." He promptly closes all doors leading out of the room before he too exits with a sounding locking mechanism shutting out all that would enter.

Zill stands and says out loud a small prayer to all the gods. "To the mighty and good of the Wold. Please allow these adventurers a safe passage to their goals and a productive service to the populations of the areas they visit. Thank you Jancassis for your mercy in sending one of your own to rid the Blackbird Lake area of the blight. Our gratitude is never ending to all that wish to see good deeds met and justice served."

Zill sits back down and motions for everyone to begin eating their fill then begins the conversation once again. "I hope this subject does not ruin appetites, but I wish for you all to know that by coming here I have put you in danger, but I can assure you that the people that spoke with you in the city mislead you. I would never do anything to harm the Wold or it's inhabitants, nor would my son. Our enemies are powerful and very greedy and the work we do requires help from mortals considered non-magical in their core nature. If you are willing to take an opportunity to help us, return to me when your deeds are finished and the work I have for you will be as rewarding as it is perilous. If we do not meet again, I will hope you remain safe in your travels and free from the wrath of our enemies. The choice of course is yours and yours alone."

With that, she picks up her fork and knife and begins cutting into the flesh of a cow that is quite tender and juicy.

" That is a decision that we can make once the altar has been seen to. However grateful I may be for your help with Viscous and in bringing us here to gather our wits, I would be remiss if I did not mention that you are offering us little more in the way of assurances than the wizard in he street did. His manner was oily and his delivery of his offer seemed far too shady to be proper, yet your offer of work is far more cryptic in nature. That is hardly reassuring. You both serve the greater good, that is unmistakable, as do I and as do my companions. I know from experience though that the good we seek to do may not always be without price . Price paid by other good folk. I hope that you have enough faith in us before we part tomorrow to tell us what it is you would like us to do so that we can make an educated decision about helping you rather than a blind one."
" On to the matter of the altar. We have been presented with a plan by Viscous that would have us fight our way through a lava tube populated by what sound like Fire Giants to a magma/acid place where we would have to search around to find the right place to access the altar from, and as we approach the altar, Vauhwyt's commune spell tells us that the water will become stronger and stronger acid, possibly enough to dissolve us completely. Bart, if the altar is in he water near the island can't your magical navigation instruments tell you where it is? This would save us the trouble of dealing with the giants, which is something I think Viscous is looking forward to us doing for her. If you can find it we can prepare for just the acid and not spread ourselves too thin warding against both fire AND acid."
" So what do you all say? I do not like following Viscous' plan. It accomplishes her goals and lets her know where we are in case she decides to interfere. Have we any other ideas?"

Bart ac 31 hp 105/105
Monday January 5th, 2009 1:30:58 AM

Malgant i could try to look to this altar with the wayfinder, i havent thought of that, I will try it after dinner. Lady Zill if you are powerfull some people will start to dislike you only for being powerfull, they want to be powerfull as well the want to control the wold. Also when you r powerfull sometimes you have to make decissions for the better good, sometimes people will suffer from your decision, but for a lot of people it will be a better situation. Take for instance people that get water from the lake and sell it as acid, they make a profit of it, when the lake is clear they will habve to find another way of living

Listening to the conversation, Aztyr she decides she was glad to have not left the estate during the afternoon. She thinks to herself that she might not have been as restrained as some of the others if approached and asked to turn on someone who trusted her.
When Malgant discusses Viscous and the plan that dragon put forward, "I agree Malgant, If we succeed she loses nothing, because I expect the acid from that alter is too strong for her to raise her brood in. But sending us in a direction, that while it gets us to the alter, it will probably kill a few of us, would please her immensly. And if we failed compleatly she would get her revenge without raising a claw of her own, and can plan on how to meet the next group of people sent to clear up the problem."
She then lets the conversation continue and listens closely...

"Are we close enough to the lake for you to use that Bart? I was under the impression that the tools were tied to the trade of navigation and that you needed to be on the water to use them. If you can check tonight though then it will help me plan on what prayers to prepare in the morning."

OOC
I was looking at the 'find the route' and 'commune with the sea' options on the Nautaoculus. I am not sure if the lake would count as the sea for this purpose but it could be worth a try. At the very least it would give you an idea what tunnels we needed to take if the lava tubes are the only path. But you need to be on the water to use that power from what you character sheet says.

Zill listens to Malgants concerns and Bardamion almost bursts at the seams when compared to their advasaries as shady or dubious, but after receiving a stern look from his mother he holds his tongue. The Lady Zill responds, "Perhaps I will tell you in the morning if Pantheon believes it a good idea. I will pray and cast spells this evening before I sleep on the matter. Come now though, let us not become confused with what is in the future, but what is in the present, no?"

Bart explains the meaning and consequences of power and she smiles at him like a teacher would a student, swallows her bite and wipes her mouth, "Thank you for that good sir. Now you understand why it is so very important that our true identities are not revealed or we may be lured out by harm to the people of this city in a time we can not be interrupted."

Aztyr does not believe she could have restrained herself had she went into the city with the others. Further, Viscous still is upon her mind also.

Vorelle is slightly amused at the thought of the adventurers being in a situation of torture but does not respond until the others mention the plan of getting to the altar.

Zill looks toward Vauhwyt and smiles at the words said by the Avenger, "Is there any specifics you can relate to us in regard to the temple beneath the lake? Perhaps there was a misunderstanding related? How close can the others get before they perish?"

When the topic comes back to Viscous, Bardamion continues to eat some venison with wild spinach as Zill responds, "Viscous will leave you alone as long as you adhere to the agreement, or she will receive a visit from Bardamion." His eyes grow bright and for a moment, his expression changes to one of a warriors hunger more then one that needs nourishment. He too wipes his mouth after swallowing a bite and says, "I will take them then. We can use rocks to tie to each of us for a controlled decent to the bottom of the lake and with water breathing and protections from acid find the alter." Zill reminds them all and informs Bardamion, "They have a boat, it must be able to withstand the acid of the lake. perhaps they can just sail to the center and jump overboard?" Bardamion looks to the group for a response.

OOC: Sea is defined as and does not include a lake....
The continuous body of salt water covering most of the earth's surface, especially this body regarded as a geophysical entity distinct from earth and sky. (Abbr. S.)
a. A tract of water within an ocean.
b. A relatively large body of salt water completely or partially enclosed by land.
c. A relatively large landlocked body of fresh water.
a. The condition of the ocean's surface with regard to its course, flow, swell, or turbulence: a rising sea; choppy seas.
b. A wave or swell, especially a large one: a 40-foot sea that broke over the stern.
Something that suggests the ocean in its overwhelming sweep or vastness: a sea of controversy. Seafaring as a way of life. Astronomy. A lunar mare.

In regard to "c", I would say the body of water in question must be much, much larger then Blackbird Lake.

Furthermore the artifact ability is defined by this.....
Note that this affect works with respect to locales, not objects or creatures within a local. Thus the affect could not find a way to a body of water where a hydra lives or to the location of "a hoard of platinum pieces that went down with a ship

The temple and altar are "objects".

The Wayfinder can be used on land as well, but u cant find the way with it u can only see it, you can see wathever u like to see and u will be drawn very fast to it, in that way u can see a way to reach it i still can try if u like i hope i can see in which part of the lake i can find the altar and i can see the surroundings of the altar.

"What about underwater dangers? Those Slaad's were tough on land but down there we would be in their elements. My bow would be useless as would the warhammer I carry. I haven't tried swinging a warhammer under water but I'm guessing it wouldn't make much of an impact. Do we need some sort of stealth magic to keep us safe?"

" If I remember correctly, Vauhwyt mentioned that bearing the horn would hold the demons at bay, I can only assume that means the Slaad. There may be other dangers though and I will not have anywhere near enough prayers to make all of us able to act freely under water. We will have to do what we can and trust to the vision that Vauhwyt recieved that we will be safe from the shrine's guardians."

Vauhwyt tells more about her vision.

"In my vision, people from Allenport, Acid City, Aectes, and Abus all signed a promise to give fresh food and fish to the orphans of the Culverwood. But after the heartseeds died, the people broke their oaths, at the urging of higher-ups in the government or the priesthood, I'm not surre."

"So the Lady of Vengeance left her mark on the land and lake. Outsiders plagued the cities. People hid. Soldiers fought the outsiders and died."

"Then the four sides met again and took up their obligations. But that's not enough. The Dark Lady wants the unicorn horn placed on her altar in order to earn her mercy. The altar is underwater, surrounded by yellow acid, near lava and steam."

"I saw us going deep into the lake. Slaad, salamanders, and demons came near, but turned away when they saw the horn. Near the altar, only those holding the horn can go near and hope to live. I don;t know how many can hold the horn at the same time -- maybe two or three? That's a guess."

"When we place the horn on the altar, the acid goes away and the altar turns to salt. The outsiders return to their homes. That's it."

"Whatever course you all want to take we will support you in your endeavors, but I ask you to please decide soon. It smells as though the coconut cream pies and brownies with ice cream will want to be served soon and I'm afraid my chef will expect some praises when we are done or at the very least, recommendations on how he can improve his meals." Wednesday January 7th, 2009 11:22:59 PM

The group has had many ideas on how to approch the altar. Should they do as Viscous suggests and take the long route using many resources or should they travel to the middle of the lake and jump overboard to swim down to the temple?

Is Vauhwyt going alone or will the group as a whole attempt the feat, since the horn wielder will be granted immunity due to the magic from the acid, should the group risk even entering the acidic lake?

Zill explains to the group, "If Vauhwyt wishes to take the task upon herself, Bardamion can join you as well and bring you back to us when you are finished. If you all wish to travel as a group, Bardamion would not be able to bring you all back, you would have to return by a vessel or your own means to us. I can only use my device that brought you here twice a week and tomorrow morning will be the last time for six more days. I will need my own magic to return home afterward."

So the question is, how will the group conduct the expedition to the bottom of the lake?

Aztyr is not comfortable with going into water, let alone underwater, but she would not have been chosen by those who sent the dreams if she was not needed.
"I believe there was a reason all of us were called for this, for a reason. Sending or letting Vauhwyt go alone is not a good idea in my opinion. Even if we can not be transported back here by magical means.
As well as that, we really need to return the Boat to the Gnome we borrowed it from, leaving it at the island might not be the best idea either."

"I d-d-don't want to let V-Vauwhyt g-g-go alone," Vorelle says. With a distressed look, she adds, "B-b-but I d-d-don't want to get ch-chewed up by acid, either."

Light Fortification, AC 28, 82/82hp Malgant

" I too would not let Vauhwyt go alone unless she demanded it. For all of the clarity of her vision there could be one creature or a hundred native to the acidic environment that lay in wait between here and the altar that the horn will not repel. In that case, even as foreign as fighting underwater may prove to be I would go to protect the bearer of the horn. We were all called and so far we have all answered that call with all of our hearts. If only one person can safely hold the horn then that one person can swim the final leg through the strong acid to place the horn on the altar and end the blight. Lady Zill, If you have an armory on the grounds, might we have access to it to borrow a few mundane weapons? As was mentioned before, weapons such as those most of us favor would be useless to us underwater. A few spears would be simple enough for any of us to master in the short time we needed them and may well prove more effective than our normal weapons. Beyond the need to reoutfit ourselves I think the safest course it to have Bart locate the altar with the wayfinder, and see the path to it and then follow his lead. If the wayfinder says we must go through the lava tubes and the volcano then we will. But I think we will be shown that the shortest and easiest way to go will be directly through the lake." Malgant falls silent for a moment as if watching the plan he is laying out unfold before him. After a short pause he continues. "If you could do so, provide us with directions back to this place and we will find a way to make it back here. I do not know how long that would take, I am not even sure where we actually are right now. Bu Once the affair with this prophecy is finished then we could return to you and talk about the offer you have for us. It seems that most of us are willing to hear you out and help you."

Zill summons Beauford and he unlocks the door to tend to his mistress. "You may reopen the dining room Beauford and please make sure the guards and help get their dinner also."

Beauford bows slightly to his mistress and replies, "Of course madam, right away. Would you like the usual coffee with dessert?"

Zill responds with a smile, "It is nice to have you know me so well Beauford, yes, that would be fabulous. Bring a large sugar bowl out with it please and some milk, in case our guests want to doctor theirs."

She then looks to the group, "Would you prefer something else with your sweets? Tea perhaps?

Beauford leaves and in walks the halfling cook. He bows several times, once to each person present, his smile is larger then himself it seems. "I hope you have all enjoyed your dinner. I have some homemade brownies with of course homemade ice cream for desert and a scrumptiously light coconut cream pie for desert. There is plenty to go around and they will be served with the coffee. I just wanted to ask, I can whip something else up rather easily if neither of these appeal to anyone?" The last said with a brilliant grin, almost a dare to challenge him.

Zill looks to the cook, "Once again you have out done yourself Roundish. Worth every copper in wages I pay you each year."

After seeing to the needs of the party, he excuses himself and while wiping his hands on his apron, whistles as he leaves.

The group can hear the hired hands of the estate assembling in the smaller dining room for the help, laughing and telling jokes, enjoying their time off. As well, food is carried out to the guards on the outside.

Dessert is a hit as well. Flavor flows from every bite and the coffee is without any bitter taste.

"It is time for me to perform some divinations before my bed, but you are all welcome to stay up as long as you desire. The game room is available as well as the library. Thank you for your wonderful company and we will have breakfast before sunrise, so that an early start is available to all."

With that she stands and bids everyone "Good evening, I hope you are all comfortable tonight."

She walks upstairs while Bardamion excuses himself and goes to the den to watch the fire in the fireplace. He remains quiet unless someone initiates conversation, and does not leave until the large guests are ready for their slumber.

Vauhwyt and Mookie
Friday January 9th, 2009 7:42:27 AM

Vauhwyt sits, a little stunned and a lot silent, through the rest of the dinner. She barely registers the wonderful food. And dessert, as yummy as it is, sits untouched on her plate, the iced cream melting, the confection in fact a desert more than a dessert to the liontaur.

"I have to return the horn, of course," she thinks over and over. "But at what cost to my friends? Does the Dark Lady require me to make a sacrifice of them?"

She wanders aimlessly into the library, but she seeks guidance in her heart rather than in dusty volumes of forgotten lore. Catching somewhat of Vauhwyt's mood, Mookie is silent for once, and flies over to perch on some high place -- maybe on a bust of some ancient goddess of wisdom, or on some other perch above the chamber door.

Deep in thought, Vauhwyt unknowingly voices her inner thoughts softly aloud. "Be still, oh my heart, and let me this mystery explore ... In my vision, I saw all of us traveling through the water, descending deeper into the warm lake with me in the lead. Slaad, salamanders and demons of different types came near us, but upon seeing me carrying the horn, they avoided us. I knew somehow that if we fought them they would fight back, but they would leave us alone otherwise. Once we got to the yellowish aura of the altar, those who were not holding the horn quickly succumbed to the acid when we entered the area -- and they dissolved into nothing! But when I put the horn on the altar, the yellow aura disappeared, and the altar turned to salt, slowly dissolving. Just as some of my friends had dissolved."

"What do you think, Mookie?" asks Vauhwyt, looking up. "Should I bring my friends into harm's way? If I guide them to the Lake and deeper, will they ever return from the Abyss to that Plutonian shore?"

Mookie opens his mouth to caw something, "Ne--"

But Vauhwyt interrupts him. "No, don't say it! I know the answer!"

"Before I draw nearer to that horrible word, answer me one question. Are these the shadows of the things that Will be, or are they shadows of the things that May be only?"

"Boss, you're mixing literary references again," caws Mookie.

"Hush," says Vauwhyt, "You thing of evil! -- prophet still, if bird or devil!"

"Boss, 'evil' doesn't even rhyme with 'devil,' " says Mookie.

"I know," says Vauhwyt. "That always bothered me, too. But to the matter at hand. Let me think a little more."

Mokie laughs. "Always more."

"I think you are overthinking things a bit. Gods are at work here. Probably more than one. Sometimes you have to just go with your instinct and leave the rest to fate. Some things will always be. Two plus two is always four. Nothing we do can change that. If Gargul wishes this moment to bring me to his side it will happen. If we don't have protection from the acidic water then we have to go through the lava tubes. If we can't provide air then we take the long way."

" We have both protection from the acid and the ability to breathe under the water. I wouldn't have suggested doing so without those things already in hand. I fear neither the burning nor the drowning. What I fear is not being present should I be needed." Malgant's words are a calm certainty as he speaks them. WHat he does not voice is the clawing fear that they might need to go through what Viscious described as tunnels too cramped for him to pass easily. That private fear he keeps to himself.

Brownies, on the other hand... She reaches for another one, realizing with something of a start that it will be her third. She glances guiltily around, but nobody seems to care. She nibbles this one, trying to make it last, as she listens to the conversation.

"If M-Malgant can p-p-protect us from the acid, th-then I'm g-g-going," she says firmly. There is a stubborn set to her chin.

For some reason, she feels compelled to add: "We f-few, we h-happy f-f-few." Now, why did I say that?

The group adjourns the various rooms for them to sleep in. Bardamion excuses himself with a polite smile. Beauford asks everyone if they need anything before rest. Soon, the house is quiet as the guards made their shift change long before the group could be disturbed.

In the morning, some will awaken to the sounds of the first watch coming in from their shift. It is still dark outside and the smells from the kitchen rouses one the rest of the way. Fresh oatmeal with raisins and sugar is plentiful as is eggs, hash browns, sausages and bacon. Pancakes are soon stacked on a single platter that towers to two feet in height above the table.

Soon, Bardamion and Zill come down stairs to see that everyone is up and slept well. "It seems a large day is ahead of us all. As soon as we are done eating, I will take you all out to the back garden, open a portal to the isle of Viscous and you may continue your chosen course. Bardamion can go or stay as you desire."

After everyone has eaten, Bardamion shows the group a map of the southern peninsula of Yrth. "We are here and this is the island mother believes you boat is docked. Go straight to it and board. Get away from Viscous, she will allow you to leave in peace as long as no one threatens her further." He then points to the center of the lake, "This is where you must travel before you enter the water. It is around four hours from her island with a slight wind, but you might get there in three if it is strong. The rest is simple enough from what I hear." He rolls it up and hands it to Malgant with a smile. "After that, all you need to do is find the eastern coast and follow it until you return to Abderas. The docking fees for large vessels is 5 gold per day at the port. Are there any questions?"

Zill and Bardamion wait for some form of communication, if the group has questions or is ready.

Malgant senses rather than hears the changing of the watch before dawn. Quietly he gets up, and taking only his sword with him he walks quietly to the shrine of Domi within the house. He prays briefly, knowing that his true prayers will come once he is outside. Once his respects have been paid to the shrine he goes outside, greeting any of the watchmen that he sees as he passes. Once he has found a relatively clear spot in the garden he begins the sword forms that make up his true prayers to his Domi. He prays for the power to protect his friends in their challenge today. He prays to be able to keep them alive under water and to bring them safely to the surface once again. Once he has finished his mind is at peace and his purpose is set. He heads back to the house. If possible he will obtain a spear from the guards armory, large if they have it. He gathers his belongings, not putting his armor on right away, but eating breakfast first. When it seems like everyone is ready to go he will strap on his armor, checking to be sure that he has the scroll tube that he recently purchased in the catacombs.

[OOC: Sorry I'm late! Whole family is sick!]

Vauhwyt is on board, both literally and figuratively. She hopes we can just go straight down. Do we have water breathing? She can offer acid resistance. She thanks the dragons for their help, and hopes the party will survive to help them in turn.

"But first we have to visit the acid dragon and get the horn."

She adds to the wise elder dragon, "I saved the bodies of that black dragon. May I surrender them to you, to treat as you see fit? Mayhap to restore them to life? Or to do what is right among dragonkind?"

She offers the shunken (shrink item spell) bodies of the babies (I think she has three of four, IIRC?).
