Just before dawn/DM Buzz Tuesday January 13th, 2009 8:58:07 PM
Bardamion as always seems quiet this morning. A Sense Motive isn't necessary to know, his mind is working on several different calculations, some of which may or may not include the group this morning. Zill on the other hand seems as bright and cheerful as usual. Making small talk of the weather today and perhaps the cost of the dye increase at Jacquelyn's House of fabrics in the market place. She notices the mood of the adventurers she sees this morning but not make mention of their days event's to come. When Vauhwyt mentions the remains Zill respond, "They belong to Viscous, you should leave them in the arena when we return and allow her to mourn them as she wishes. After breakfast. the group is led outside to what seems to be the shed for the gardener, but once inside, she opens up a secret door in the floor and leads you all down a flight of stairs some ten or fifteen feet into the surface of the earth and ends in a hallway five feet from the stairs. The white walls, floor and ceiling all perfectly smooth and hard as a rock upon the touch. At the bottom is another secret door in the wall forward (South) and it is opened into a fairly large chamber covered in various different weapons and armors. "You may each take one of anything you need in here. A host gift to such a wonderful group of guests." In the far back corner is a large shelf full of an assortment of Special Substances And Items and a small box (Not water proof) that can hold six of any of these items. "Please feel free to fill a box as your item", she looks to those that may not need another weapon or armor. All items are Master Work. As the group goes over the large rooms contents, she tells a story. "About 400 years ago, the intermingling of the races was still pretty new. You didn't see the type of mixed friendships and alliances that you see today. For this I am happy. I spoke with Pantheon last night and he seemed pleased that you all were interested in working for us, so first, let me tell you the things our enemies know and with that, you can not be coerced into revealing things that you need to know in the future."
She keeps eye contact with the party as she speaks, "Have you ever heard of The Sons of Dread? They are a particularly evil group of people that wish to take all the power they can and leave nothing behind but the corpses of those that stand against them, literally as their undead minions. It is they that we compete against and likely whom you spoke with in the city. Consider them deadly at the very least and not to be underestimated. They have no sense of honor and their sole duty is to the Arch lich Dread."
She smiles and continues with another story, "Out of friendship I will tell you a secret that I hope will never leave this room. It is with this that I tell you, no one can know of mine or my children's true identity."
She looks far away with her gaze as she recalls a time ago, "I was much younger, yet still ancient. Magic at that time was not plentiful and items were coveted by all. Powerful mages were adored and feared. There was a small costal village that I was traveling by when I noticed the people of the village was subjugated by the authority of the area and the lawmen rules with a fist of cold steel. If someone spoke out against the local wizard, they were publically executed and their families would come up missing. Nothing was disturbed otherwise and their neighbors would steal any possessions that remained, a token of evil to turn in someone that seemed to "talk to much". I witnessed a public hanging as I was stopping by the inn and witnessed what was being done to the area. I had a choice. I could either allow the people to live in fear and die like rats in an alley or I could take on this corruption. So, I disguised myself as a buxom scholar a week later and attracted the attention of the guards captain. He told me many disgusting things he would like to do to me and on the outside I seemed to like the ideas, while on the inside, I wanted to pull his arms apart. We went on a picnic out in the field and it was there that I charmed him, gathered the name and location of the wizard that was controlling the area and had him take me there. It was indeed a maze of trees and well hidden but the captain knew the way well and we arrived in the morning. The wizard, who went by the name of Balgor suspected right away something was a miss, when his normally ruthless captain was doting all over me. This I planned. He wanted to get to know me better, since he was aware of my magical abilities and presumed I was low level, with my apparent young age and might have potential. Once alone, I launched a series of offensive spells he could barely withstand and defeated him in battle, killing him. It was at this point, I got rid of his body and assumed his position. Slowly things began to change as I kept the captain under control with charm, and the area improved to a prosperous community. I collected taxes in a modest fashion and when it was the authorities of the area that began to speak out against me, it was they that would disappear. Finally Balgor had to die and this community had to fend for itself. Authority with a goal to aid the area was appointed and my job could end. The most important part of this story is the fact, Balgor had access to ancient magical artifacts, left behind by the Teucri, the first inhabitants of the Wold." She pulls out the small device she used only yesterday to bring you all here. "I found this in his tower strongbox. It intrigued me beyond belief and needless to say, I wanted to learn about them and find more. This is when I first settled down and started having children. My first brood was killed by Ga'alian's. They discovered I was a dragon and sought after the eggs. I have no idea where they went, but ever since then, I am at war with them, but that is another story. I studied these items and learned of more, so my past was behind me and the future unfolded. I started seeking out these items and I have found several, but it was Bardamion that really took up the pastime to find items."
She comes out of her trance with that ever glowing smile, "This city has turned into quite a wonder since then and we continue our work with the property changing hands in a fashion like those of human mortals. Every eighty years or so, one of us dies only to leave it to another, then they have a child, which I then assume until their time comes, and so it has been for four generations" She winks.
Now, onto business. If you work for us, we each get an equal share of the loot, for all my children are in the business and when they receive word of an item, they notify me. So, whenever you go on a recovery mission, you must split the loot an additional 5 ways. All working Teucri items are returned to us for study. Their value is without monetary value in their worth and again, we want to secure the items away from the Sons of Dread. Please keep in mind though, my family has grown rich with this undertaking, as a side note. It was not our intent, but so it seems that their magical devices are made from precious gems and minerals. So even with the extra split, you will likely make around the same amount as you normally would, plus you will be protecting the entire Wold. Some of the relics no longer work and some do, so we may salvage the things that no longer work as well as loot the creatures that stand in the way of our job. If an item is found in the hands of someone good, it is to be negotiated to buy the item. If they refuse, we note it and keep track of it. There are five known items that have been handed down for more then two generations and so far they are still safe."
When the group is done, she leads you back upstairs and out into the garden. The guards on the wall with longbows stand vigilant as always.
It is here you may make any last minute statements or requests. No one mentioned Bardamion would, could or should come, so he stays behind at the house.
She pulls out the device once again and pushes the button. The sandy beach and a smell of sulphur return to your now sensitive nostrils as you may step through. On the other side, you see in the arena a two foot long horn of a twisting design, most likely resembling a fine ivory, sticking in the sand, with no sign of the Black Dragon. Zill tells the group, "Take it and be on your way, I still need to deal with Viscous and settle a monetary amount. Fare thee well my friends and we hope to see you as soon as possible."
With that she steps through and waits for you all to follow.

Malgant selects a spear from the weapons racked in Zill's private hideaway. Having learned how to use one as a child, the weapons becomes familiar to him in an instant. When Zill relates her story, Malgant listens intently. He is relieved that she has chosen to confide in them and accepts her offer like many of his friends did last night. When the portal is opened he steps through.
Val AC 26, HP 112/ 112 Tuesday January 13th, 2009 10:46:27 PM
So this was why she was there. All the little descisions that were made the past few months. It wasn't about the unicorn horn and some demons. It was about the sons of dread. Their very excistance offends the god of death. So she must do whatever she could to stop them. Val will step through without taking the horn.

Vorelle Tuesday January 13th, 2009 11:48:09 PM
Before leaving, Vorelle borrows two short swords and fastens them to her belt where her axes normally hang. Her axes she stows carefully in her backpack.
"L-let's g-go," she says softly.
Lorth AC 25 HP 111/111 Wednesday January 14th, 2009 8:01:19 AM
Lorth takes nothing, at the mention of the sons of dread he spins around watching Zill intently, "I have fought the sons of dread as my father fought and gave his life against them in the dread wars with Cinnamon valley. It was I and a group of fellow adventurers who drove them from the Crimson Fort. I will help you recover whatever items you are looking for if it is them you fight against." He draws his sword, It glows with runes spelling out his family name. "On my fathers sword, which I recovered, thank Gargul, I give you my oath." He seems to forget that they have a lake of acid to contend with and makes no motion to follow Zill through the portal, instead waiting for further information on this new development.

Malgant posting for Aztyr Wednesday January 14th, 2009 9:31:59 PM
Aztyr looks at the racks of weapons and armor, unsure of what item might help her underwater. Seeing Vorelle select a pair of shortswords to replace her axes, Aztyr does the same, thinking the thrusting motion of the swords easier to use than her longsword underwater, She then follows the group out of the secret room and into the garden. When Zill opens he portal, she steps through to finish the task at hand.

Once on the beach he says good bye to Zill"We'll be back and then we'll give the Son's of Dread something to Dread."Looking to his group well we best be on our way.We got 4 hours of sailing to do.I'll stay up top with the boat.Someone has to.Besides I realy don't fight that well in water. How does that sound."
Vauhwyt and Mookie Thursday January 15th, 2009 6:14:02 PM
Vauhwyt looks at everything -- the secret passage, the armory, etc -- with great interest, and with greater still when a gift is offered. If it is possible, she will gladly accept a large size masterwork composite longbow with a +2 strength bonus to the pull. And a quiver with 20 arrows as well, please.
She listens intently to the story of the Dread, of the corrupt wizard, and how the dragons brought law and order to the area.
[OOC to DM: Highlight to display spoiler: {Buzz, where is this city? What is its name? If you would like a hand in placing it in the Wold, I'd be glad to offer some ideas.}]
Vauhwyt says that the monetary terms are just fine by her. She mentions that she is an officer in the WLA, and will sometimes need time off for her WLA training and (more rarely) duties. She also makes it clear that her commitments to the Dark Lady and to the Lord of Life and Death are her first concerns, but notes that they are not generally that demanding. She just wants her own loyalties to be up front. And it goes without saying that her loyalty to her friends trumps all.
She thanks Xill several times, and asks that she pass on her regards to Bardamion. She asks how to return to the dragon after their mission is complete.
Just before she steps out onto the sand, Vauhwyt casts Resist Acid on herself, just in case of ambush.
On the sands, she drops the baby dragon corpses on the sand, and they return to full size.
She says a quick prayer and reaches out to pick up the unicorn horn.
A new day/DM Buzz Friday January 16th, 2009 12:41:59 AM
The arena has a large 5-6 foot rock at each corner to define it's area and you can see, the waves of the lake come up into the arena a bit. Around the arena are trees pulled up and horizontally lined up in a circle around 300 feet away from the arena.
Malgant chooses a spear and thinks back to his youth. He is willing to work with Xiltachtalical.
Val has decided on what course of actions she must take but not mention any out loud.
Vorelle helps her self to two items instead of one but Xiltachtalical does not seem to mind.
Lorth declines an item, then says more in four sentences then he has said in a couple of days. Not only does he want to assist in Zills mission he does so with enthusiasm. He stands still at the opening to the island and Zill coaxes him through. "One mission at a time good Paladin, this must be done first and your comrades will always need you." She holds her hand out to him from the island.
Aztyr too takes two short swords, again Zill does not seem to show a negative sign of displeasure and continues to smile as the group finishes their selection.
Malgant looks around for some rocks, but the only ones available are the boulders at the corners of the arena. There is no sign of Viscous.
Appolo takes a spear. He is inclined to believe they will be defeating the very leader of a large band of evil, that include many different races. Zill responds to his question, "Hopefully Viscous will not have her curse used against her by another. I would lose sleep if I jeopardized her life in an attempt to keep her honorable with the people of the Wold." He is eager to feel the water beneath his feet again.
Vauhwyt asks about large weapons and Zill will say, "I apologize, I did not anticipate large guests. I assure you that much construction will be done over the next couple of weeks to accommodate you all." , she beams. When Vauhwt mentions the WLA, Zill is very understanding, "Your schedule is your own, but keep in mind, there are several missions in store for you if you chose to do it. Bardamion will happily receive well your regards." With a spell and a step, she returns to the island.

The group takes two hours of walking before they get to their boat, still at anchor in the cove they found only a day ago. The metal vessel sits unscathed by the waters very low pH. They board with ease and have no encounters on their way to the center of the lake.
It took six hours to get to this location. Please let me know what the group does for spells or items and place those enchantments at the bottom of your post, including time available.
Lorth AC 25 HP 111/111 Friday January 16th, 2009 8:43:25 AM
Lorth follows everyone to the boat, his mind elsewhere. This turn of events is good, as he will be able to pursue his goals once again, or destroying the dread. Thank gargul he has been given this chance. Back to the task at hand he waits on deck of the boat. Doing what he can to help out, but waiting to be told what to do as he isn't a sailor at all.
Vauhwyt and Mookie d10+7=17 ; Friday January 16th, 2009 3:05:06 PM
Vauhwyt has so far today cast an acid resistance, but that expired in the walk to the boat. She will now cast a False Life spell, which should last a good long while (7 hrs). The spell grants an extra 17 hp to V and M! Sweet!
Once on the boat, Vauwhyt casts her Detect Victim Spell. Granted, in its traditional use, it should not do anything, but the Commune didn't work as advertised either, so why not try?
She also looks for any details that might let her duplicate the path she took in her vision.
Failing that, maybe the cleric types have a divination spell? Can anyone summon a searcher to go look under the water?
Light Fortification, AC 28, 82/82hp Malgant Friday January 16th, 2009 5:10:01 PM
Malgant watches Lorth after the paladins largest speech in the Minotaur's memory of him. THis is a path that he embraces fully and since Lorth has not been wrong yet, Malgant is glad for the opportunity to work with Zill. As he suspected when the man approached Val and himself in the street, Zill is indeed working with forces that could be catastrophic to the wold. But she and her children are doing this for the right reasons and he feels that sometimes the risk is worth it. Back to the task at hand. The boulders used to mark the arena are far too large for Malgant to carry with him, thought they would work wonderfully to speed the group to the bottom of the lake. Since he has seen her do it before, Malgant asks Vauwhyt if she could shrink one or 2 of the rocks for this purpose, or an even larger one if they encounter such a boulder on their way to the ship. Once at the ship Malgant asks Bart if he can find the spot that Bardamion has marked on their map or if he will need to use the wayfinder to do so. Either way Malgant is sure after having watched Bart navigate through the supernatural storm on their way here, and fight off froggies while doing it, that the warrior will have no trouble finding the spot. Once they are over the correct spot Malgant has several prep spells he wants to cast, both from his own prayers and from the scrolls that he aquired at the catacombs.

No problem since I think that it is likely still a better tool for this than my greatsword. Once we are on site I will be using the scrolls to protect us all from acid and to grant us waterbreathing since scrolls would be tough to use underwater. I also want to use the Status spells I prayed for to be able to monitor everyone in case I can't always see them. Once we reach the "yellow" acid cloud I will ward the person or persons (I think I have 2 memorized) with more acid resistance from my spells and they will have a hope of surviving should they somehow let go of the horn. Once we are all done a fast waterwalking spell and we should all pop to the surface like corks. sounds simple right? but there are so many things that could go wrong.....add evil laugh.... Oh and where you said Vauhwyt picked up 2 shortswords as well...I think you meant Aztyr.
Malgant posting for Aztyr Friday January 16th, 2009 5:14:00 PM
Aztyr follows the group along, wondering what places they might get to go and what they will see working for a silver dragon trying to protect the whole Wold. Certainly more than she anticipated when she left her home. When she arrives at the boat, her old fears come back and she doesn't want to get on board. Once she realizes that she is the only one holding up the expedition though she sighs, closes her eyes and goes directly to the middle of the boat.

By the way, she takes a good look at it. Any chance it is NOT a unicorn horn? That would be a cute trick for the black dragon to play on us.

Vauhwyt and Mookie Tuesday January 20th, 2009 11:15:08 AM
Vauhwyt looks a little nervous that everyone is not coming. But she puts a brave face on it.
"As an avenger, I'm immune to fear. So I can't say I'm scared that you guys won't be with me," she says to Aztyr and Appolo, with a smile. "Anyway, it should be easy -- one, two three, horn goes on the altar, job done!"
Mookie ducks his head under his wing. "Don't jinx it, Boss!"
Malgant posting for Aztyr Tuesday January 20th, 2009 6:08:37 PM
" I am as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs about water. I said it before when we floated here on this huge hunk of metal that by all sensible reckoning should sink like a rock out here. But I will be going to the altar with you. Make no mistake about that. I was called to this for a reason and I mean to see it through. There is no way I could become a spiritual leader to my people if I were to ignore a calling like this one or not see it to it's conclusion." Aztyr continues to twitch nervously at the center of the boat. It isn't even moving yet but still Aztyr has a bit of a green tinge to her complexion. You all think back to breakfast, and then take a second look at how close you are to her as the boat makes ready to leave the island. Now may be a good time to be somewhere else, anywhere else.
Sink or swim/DM Buzz Tuesday January 20th, 2009 9:04:53 PM
The group takes stock of their situation in the middle of the lake. Their boat made of metal, some wonder as to what keeps it afloat.
Lorth can think of nothing else but the coming future he has with The Sons of Dread. He stays out of the way of those that know what they are doing, unless told something specific that will help.
Vauhwyt insures the horn is real before leaving the island. The horn appears to be as suggested, with a hardened root calloused over where the root once grew. The horn was cut or ripped out of the beast that once wore it majestically and it is sad to think of how the horn came to be here, but will all things, it has a purpose now and it will used to end the blight. She casts a spell on herself, increasing hit points for her and Mookie. With the Detect Victim spell, she can sense no "victims" in the range of the spell.
Malgant asks Vauhwyt is she could shrink a rock, his question unheard. He then asks Bart if he could find the proper spot. He then reads the scrolls used to protect the group. Thank you, I corrected the post.
Aztyr hesitates before boarding, then centers herself in the boat. She satys there when they reach their destination.
Appolo too stays on the boat.
Val misses the open sea. The clean air. With her veteran sailing status, she takes control of getting shoved off.
Bart aids Val in preparing the boat.
Vorelle leaves Champ with the others as she prepares to enter the water.
So the group prepares itself as quick as possible. Those in heavy armor sink rapidly compared to others that must swim down. The acid of the lake tingles the skin as the magic of the protection spells protect those that enter. 5 damage per minute in the lake. It will take those in metal armor 5 minutes to descend to the bottom of the lake. A successful swim check will take 10 minutes. A touch attack from someone floating onto someone in armor sinking or swimming will allow you to travel with them. A person swimming with another holding on must increase their DC to 15
I need to know who is sinking and who is swimming, to stay with Vauhwyt. It is important at this time as the group can see the Slaad gather around the horn wielder yet not attack, yet.

Vauhwyt apologizes for ignoring Malgant. "Great idea," she says, "And I have another twist."
Vauhwyt looks around for a barrel. Surely there is a barrel on board a boat? She empties it out and seals it tight. Then she shrinks it with a Shrink Item spell. "This'll help us float up when I unshrink it underwater." She says. "And the shrunken boat I keep in my backpack will serve us well after we get to the surface, if we are not close to the boat."
She definitely thinks the idea of weights to help the group sink is a great idea, too. Hopefully there are heavy things on board they can use -- a barrel filled with coal, maybe?
Vauhwyt suggests that all the people going below be tied together so they won't get separated under water and so that everyone will sink together. She'll tie everyone together if no one objects.
That way Bart does not have to hold hands. "I need my hands to hold the horn, sorry," she tells him. "But with this rope, we'll be fine, I think."
Mookie she stows in his pouch. She makes sure that whoever is casting the water breathe includes her bird as well! She thanks Mal for the scroll of Resist Acid. She has her own (stronger) resist spells ready if needed.
Vauhwyt stows away her weapons and holds onto the horn with both hands. When the time comes, she expects everyone else to put a hand on the powerful item.

OOC good idea with the barrel. I am planning on a water walking spell when we are done but the barrel is a great alternative.Roping us together will help alot too.

Val AC 26, HP 112/ 112 d20+9=21 ; Wednesday January 21st, 2009 10:38:01 PM
Val dives into the water, swimming down. Her suit of chain is composed of mithril rings forged by elvish smiths. It's quite light and doesn't sink her much at all. Thankfully magical protection means the acit won't eat her alive nor will she drown.
ooc: water breathing 150/ 150 min, resist acid 10: 30 min
