"You do realize that those children will believe all gnomes to be rich now, don't you?" Selemar smiles at Rollo. "They will be hoping to see more of you come along."
She is definitely an interesting woman. Rather pleasing to the eye, at least for a human
DM Kathy Wednesday January 7th, 2009 11:47:59 PM Garret and Rollo try to assist the kids, each in his own way. "Ha!" one of the urchins replies to Rollo. "This is way more fun than skitterball." He accepts the gold, though.
Rollo remembers that Bigtown, at the foot of Shadow Mountain, was founded by giants, and got its name from the fact that everything there is scaled to the larger size. You also know that most of the giants on that part of the mountain are hill giants, trolls, ettins, and ogres.
Garrett also knows that there are non-giants living in Bigtown. Many are Taurs of various kinds who are reasonably comfortable in the large-sized city. Medium-sized humanoids (mostly humans) are usually servants and laborers, and are often ill-treated.
All of you know [brief recap here] that you are seeking an item called the Mercy of the Gods, a sacred brazier dedicated to both Flower and Pantheon. The item was last known to be in the area of Shadow Mountain, being carried southward by a group of devout pilgrims heading for Aisildur. In Bigtown, therefore, you may be able to find more information about where the pilgrims went and what happened to the brazier.
The next day, you reach the branching side-road leading toward Bigtown. You are not the only ones who turn off the road to visit the giants, though most travelers stick to the main road. In the afternoon, you approach the town. From a distance, it seems like any walled town you may have seen in the past...that is, until you get close enough to appreciate the scale of the thing. The wooden palisade is formed by massive tree-trunks; the gates are wide enough that four wagons could enter abreast with room to spare.
The iron gates stand open for the moment, and a bored-looking giant in leather armor is watching the travelers as they come and go.
Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29] Thursday January 8th, 2009 12:03:29 AM
'Maybe we should ambush him, before he ambushes us!' Feyjarl thinks, laughing to himself.
He stretches on his horse and approaches the iron gates.

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17] Thursday January 8th, 2009 8:45:03 AM
As they approach the city, Garret says, "Oh yes, I remember more now -- Bigtown, land of the giants! It's not especially a nice place for humans, I have to say. We should stick together when we get there, for slavery is quite common..."
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Thursday January 8th, 2009 10:43:34 AM
Axara watches Feygarl put the ointment on his wound. "You know, you should really have a cleric look at the injury. I am sure it can be healed. Unless there is some magic at works and may be I can help if you want. By the way, how do you know Kiel? For such a rational guy, he acted quite ..... abruptly. Do you know anything about his love life?"
Afte Rollo tells all about Bigtown, a shiver goes through her spine "Not sure I am too found of a place where human are one notch above cattle. Garret is right. We should stick together, even if it means that someone will not get his beauty rest." She winks at Zeph after the last comment.
She follows the group as they enter Bigtown.
Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3 d20+7=20 ; d20+7=16 ; d20+7=9 ; Thursday January 8th, 2009 3:27:47 PM
Zeph smiles at Axara's comment, not really understanding what she is getting at.
Well. It seems I have lost all respect I may have earned with this group. Oh well. Time heals all wounds. I will just have to make myself as useful as possible.
"Compassion is the savior of mankind. If we lose that we are but hollow husks acting and reacting in our environment. I apologize if my actions were not favorable, I already said I will concede to what the group decides to do in the future. Think of a use for me and I will execute it." Zeph says, smiling.
Zeph tries to comprehend what Rollo is saying, but can't make it out. "Such an interesting language. Is it Dwarven based?" Zeph asks Rollo.
Zeph will keep an eye out for any inns or anything suspicious.
"So, where do we begin our search? Lady Dulcet told us Pilgrims may have information about our [i]goal[i]. Perhaps we should try a temple or church?" Zeph asks.
If the group agrees, then Zeph wouldn't mind to be the one who asks a person where the Churches in the city are.

"Clerics have looked at the wound, and the ointment is what I was given to remedy the pain - apparently there is some kind of magical 'taint'," Feyjarl responds.
Nearing the gate Feyjarl turns to Axara again, "I've known Kiel for quite some time, his response to the situation was not such a streetch for him. As to his love life... I have no idea, but if I did it wouldn't be for me to say anyway."
Feyjarl pulls up next to Zeph on his horse, "I've got the perfect use for you... You're up for the first round at the inn!" He smiles and laughs (hopefully with Zeph rather than at him!)
Hmark Thursday January 8th, 2009 8:59:05 PM
"Well, that's an awfully big.....slavery?" Hmark chokes, hearing Garret midsentence. The archer inches in closer to Feyjarl and Garret. "Whereever you wanna go, I'm sticking with you."
DM Kathy Friday January 9th, 2009 12:50:38 AM
As you approach the gates, Garret gives you a quick rundown on the place. Many of you decide it might be a good idea to stick together.
Rollo addresses the gate guard in Giant. "Hngh," he grunts. Then he replies in Giant: Highlight to display spoiler: {Hurco's isn't bad. Follow East Road here to Smash Street--that's the one with the holes in it. It'll be on your left.}
The guard does not hinder you, or any other travelers, as you enter through the gates. Being in Bigtown is an unsettling experience. Everything is too tall for you. Doorknobs are set too high. Stairs look as if they would be painful to climb. Wooden shop-signs hang so high it's hard to get a good angle to read them. For Garret and Rollo, it's like being among the Big Folk--only more so. For the rest of you...well, perhaps you begin to develop an appreciation of what life is like for Garret and Rollo.
Suddenly, a door of a nearby dwelling bursts open, and a giant form is flung out into the street. The man bounces once and skids for a bit, as a group of human travelers scurry to get out of the way. A second giant appears in the doorway, ostentatiously dusting off his hands.
With a roar, the giant in the street climbs to his feet and charges. The ensuing scuffle promises to be hazardous for smaller passers-by, so you scoot hurriedly around it and continue on your way. A few blocks later, you come upon a rather scruffy-looking ogre being harrassed by three young giants. They are pelting the ogre with garbage and small stones, and shouting at him in Giant: Highlight to display spoiler: {Go on, get out of here! We don't want no ogre scum.} Glancing down an alley, you can see two giants rolling around on the ground, punching and biting at each other. Fighting seems to be a favorite pastime around here.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17] Friday January 9th, 2009 9:08:05 AM
As the walk past the first stairway, Garret looks waaaay up. He says out loud, "I think I see why I haven't actually visited here before. My, those are really big stairs." As they walk, he does look around with interest, seemingly not too cowed by the large size of everything. He examines everything as they walk by. After stepping to the side, he even watches the fights as they occur with interest.
When the group passes the ogre, Garret starts to walk over to the ogre to talk with it, but has second thoughts as he sees the size up the great creature up close. He turns to Rollo and says, "Quite the big fellow there, huh?"
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Friday January 9th, 2009 9:15:53 AM
Axara instinctively pulls closer to the group. she whispers "I do not like this place. Not at all. I say we get the info we want and we scoot out of here pronto. No one is playing hero or good samaritan. Unless a really good looking hunk, my size, is in distress." She winks at the group after her last comment.
Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37] Friday January 9th, 2009 11:53:47 AM
Rollo thanks the guard for the suggestion and follows the group into town observing the various melees.
Smiling at Garret's comment Rollo replies, "Giant isn't just a clever name."
If the group seems to be wandering without direction Rollo will start heading for Hurco's.
Hmark Friday January 9th, 2009 2:14:42 PM
Hmark's head bobs up and down in earnest agreement with the "get the info and get out" comments. The oversized buildings, furnishings, and people, coulpled with the fighting and unknown languages getting bandied about, has the young man from Magpie Crossing decidedly skittish.
When Rollo starts walking as if he knows where he's going, Hmark sticks with the gnome.
Selemar Friday January 9th, 2009 11:30:19 PM

"We see ourselves as normal, and them as giants. They see themselves as normal and us as abnormal. Why do they not have sympathy for another one as big as they?" Zeph asks nobody in particular.
Zeph will not interfere though, knowing that would not favor the group's intentions.
"Well. Where do we begin our search friends?" Zeph says, a bit eager to continue on their quest.

DM Kathy Sunday January 11th, 2009 11:02:09 PM
The sights and sounds of Bigtown are somewhat disturbing and you all draw closer together.
Fortunately, Rollo got some information from the gate guard that at least gives you a starting place.
He leads you to another main road, this one pitted here and there with giant potholes, as if someone had been throwing boulders. Which, indeed, someone may have been. A short distance along this street, you find a large public building. Its painted wooden sign shows a crudely-drawn mug of ale, and what you devoutly hope is some kind of sausage on a fork. Underneath is lettering in Giant: Highlight to display spoiler: {Hurco's Place. Good Food and Drink.}
You have to reach up to get the doorknob, but it turns readily enough, and the door swings open. Inside, the look of the tavern is familiar enough, or would be if it wasn't twice as big as it should be. The wooden tables and chairs are massive; the wooden bar across the room could double as a garden wall.
You start a bit as you hear a booming voice from right next to you, but it proves to be only the barmaid. "Hello, little peoples," she says, in accented but understandable Common. "You sit now, I come a minute. Maybe sit near side of room, yes? Not want to get squishded."
She saunters away, swinging her hips in the manner of barmaids around the Wold. At her size, the effect is breathtaking.
Looking around, you note that the rest of the clientele seem to be working-class giants. None seem looking for a fight at this particular moment, but you have already seen how common brawls are in this place. Perhaps a table at the edge of the room is indeed your best option.
In addition to the giants, there are a couple of taurs in the place. One, a centaur, sits near the window, a glass of wine at his elbow. He appears to be studying some kind of tome--an unusual activity hereabouts. There is also a minotaur, a martial-looking fellow, enjoying a meal.
Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29] Monday January 12th, 2009 1:44:57 AM
"I'd advise a corner table as she said," Feyjarl says, "Maybe we should order one meal and then we could all sit on the edge of the plate and eat it." A wry smile.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17] Monday January 12th, 2009 9:16:02 AM
Garret laughs and replies, "That sounds like a good idea, Feyjarl."
"What do you people think about that centaur over there? I was starting to think that no one in the town knew how to read."
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Monday January 12th, 2009 9:49:39 AM
Axara nods at Feygarl's comments and moves toward the corner table he identified.
Hmark Monday January 12th, 2009 12:41:49 PM
Hmark tilts his head sideways and observes the retreating form of the giant barmaid with some interest. Thus, the young man is caught off guard as the group moves off.
"Huh?" he grunts, as he reflexively jumps and wheels to face his comrades. "Oh. Yeah. Uh. Let's do that," he lamely finishes, following after everyone to the selected corner table.
Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3 Monday January 12th, 2009 2:29:40 PM
Zeph follows with the group and sits down at the corner table.
"Think they have Human-sized portions or we should share a Giant-sized plate of food between two people?" Zeph says smiling.
Then Zeph turns to whisper to Feyjarl and Rollo: "Think it would be a good idea to ask the Centaur what he's reading? He may know something about where the grail may have traveled. We are here for information after all." Zeph suggests their next course of action.
Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37] d20+9=20 ; Monday January 12th, 2009 4:58:46 PM
Rollo orders plate of food, and then hops from his perch as the barmaid wanders off, and heads over to the centaur.
His first attempt to communicate is in common, but if that proves incorrect he will move on to sylvan, giant, then if all else fails gnomish.
"Pardon my rudeness, but may I ask what you are reading?" Rollo attempts to break the ice.

DM Kathy Monday January 12th, 2009 11:29:54 PM
You decide that a corner table is your best option, and head off in search of one. The table you end up finding is not precisely in a corner, but it's next to a wall and party sheltered by a large wooden support. The chairs are too big for you, of course, and when you sit in one, you find yourselves looking at the tabletop at about chin level.
After a moment, though, the barmaid arrives with an armful of thick cushions, which help a little. With a laugh and a wink, she agrees that sharing a meal is probably the best idea, and saunters off to the kitchen to collect it.
Rollo wanders over to speak to the literary centaur, trailed by Selemar. The centaur seems a bit startled to be directly addressed, but answers readily enough. "This? This is a history of Shadow Mountain and its creatures, written by Euphemia Hax. In her day, she was one of the foremost natural-history scholars of Plateau City." His lips quirk in a slight smile. "One could wish that she had actually found the time to make the journey from Plateua City to view the mountain firsthand. Some of her conclusions are...astonishing."
Politely setting the book aside, he adds, "Have you been in town long?"
Meanwhile, the food arrives at your table. Each plate is bigger than your head and contains a large portion of some kind of roasted meat, two whole potatoes, and a quantity of something green and slimy. The meals come with massive loaves of bread and very tall mugs brim-full of foaming ale.

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3 d20+5=6 ; Tuesday January 13th, 2009 2:38:09 AM
While Rollo talks to the Centaur, Zeph is caught up in his thoughts about Giant society. He says to himself and anyone else willing to listen to his ramblings: "Would it cost more to exist as a giant? I mean, if a loaf of human-sized bread costs a copper, then wouldn't a giant-sized loaf cost two coppers? There is more material used for the same result... Likewise, wouldn't it cost more to build a giant-sized house and furniture? I mean, a halfling house could be built out of three trees felled, a human house out of six, and a giant house out of twelve." Zeph says.
Then Zeph turns to Hmark, "Do you know anything about farming? How much land do you think it would take to supply a city of Giants enough food? And how much would that cost compared to a city of Humans or Halfings?"
Ahhh, numbers. Something I understand. People on the other hand, bleh. Zeph thinks to himself.
Then Zeph's mind turns back to money: If we found 5000 gold on those mercs, then that would mean about 714.28 for each of us here... Maybe it would be easier to just give 715 to two people and 714 to the other five. (OOC: That is how I divided up the loot on the loot page btw. I also put Buhl in there just in case)
When Zeph gets the green gnomish next to the plate of food, Zeph looks up to see the smiling Minotaur. Not wanting to be offensive, Zeph thinks it best to accept the drink...
BUT before downing it, Zeph turns to Feyjarl, Hmark, Garret, and Axara at the table, "I'll go first. If I pass out, then get Rollo to heal me or something. One of us should definitely not drink... just in case... and make sure nobody steals my stuff." Zeph says with a wink.
Then Zeph lifts his mug of Green Gnomish with a smile at the dark Minotaur, as if to toast, and takes the gulp.
For a second, there seems to be nothing. Zeph turns to Axara and says, "How much money do I owe you again?" Then Zeph's head hits the large table in front of him, out cold.
(OOC: Well. I rolled a Nat 1 on a Green Gnomish fort save. Darn the bad luck.)
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Tuesday January 13th, 2009 9:09:53 AM
Axara looks at the huge quantity of food and shake her head. "No way I am going to get fat eating this. I will try some of the vegetable and water for me. No wonder the giants are so big. Look at their diet!
As Zeph passes out at the table, she smiles and turns to the other He is quite a cheap date. 1 drunk and he is done. Of course he is useless now but so cute, snooring like a drunken baby.
She looks at the minotaur but says nothing, thinking to herself "why do care about us? Why buying us drink? What is your agenda, Bull-headed man? "
Hmark Tuesday January 13th, 2009 4:32:28 PM
Hmark grins at Feyjarl. "Place ain't so bad after all," he opines.
The young human grabs a loaf of bread, breaks it into a managable sized piece, and rips off a chunk with his teeth. Zeph asks his farm question, and he shrugs. "Dunno how many farms it takes for a human city," he answers. "Jus' that we do OK with our land." He thinks on it some, but gets distracted by the arrival of drinks and the subsequent departure (at least in spirit) of Zeph.
Hmark gives the minotaur a tentative wave in reply as he eyes his unconscious companion.
"Uh, miss?" he calls to the barmaid. When she comes over, he waves his hand over the drinks. "What are these?"

Zeph mumbles inaudiably under his breath as drool drops from his mouth. It sounds like, "All I'm trying to do is be a moral compass. Compasses have points. My weapon is a rapier, that has a point. The bull-man has an Axe. THat has an edge. Would he have a moral edge if I have a moral point in my compass?"
Zeph is clearly beligerently drunk.... and he is sorry for it.
DM Kathy Wednesday January 14th, 2009 12:01:58 AM
The minotaur, Buhl waves the barmaid over and places an order in Minotaur. Alas, she does not understand that language, and he must repeat himself in Common.
"A green what now?" she asks, puzzled. When the drink is explained, she frowns thoughtfully. "I talk to Graahz. Maybe he knows."
The drinks take a while to concoct, so you have nearly finished your meal when they arrived. They do not, precisely, look like Flaming Green Gnomishes, although they are on fire. They are served in what are obviously meant to be delicate tea-cups, making them about the right size for you. They pack quite a wallop, and Zeph quickly succumbs.
Axara tries the vegetable, and finds it more appetizing than it looks. Actually it is quite tasty.
Hmark asks about the drinks. The barmaid says, "These--uh--Flamey Green Gnomes. Anyway, that what Graahz say." She gestures. "Buhl buy them for you."
Meanwhile, Rollo is speaking with the centaur. "Sights in Bigtown," he says thoughtfully. "Well, the temple to Og-Tlakkhen-Mouw is quite remarkable. The caravanserai is also well worth a visit--though I assume that's where you're staying?"
Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29] Wednesday January 14th, 2009 12:43:44 AM
Feyjarl sits back revelling in the flow of alcohol through his body, 'Potent stuff,' he thinks to himself. Fingers intertwined behind his neck, and under his hairline, he subconsciously traced the lines of the brand he had there.
The feeling of the brand almost sparked a memory in his mind... He caught glimpses of a pair of arrows deeply sunk into a man's chest, but he couldn't see the face. As abruptly as it appeared, it was gone, leaving him confused as to what he'd seen. He couldn't recall it now and leaned forwards to bite into some more of the tasty meat on the plate, sipping at the drink and tearing off some more bread.
Washing it down with another swig of the drink, and another image made him jerk backwards in his chair abruptly, he had a vivid recollection of being tied down and beaten. 'Did this even happen to me?' He thought, 'surely these images are too vivid to be a concoction, they have to be from my own life, and yet I don't remember them...' He sat silently, trying to make something of these flashes.
Gathering himself together he sat forwards, chewed some more bread and raised his cup at Buhl, nodding his head to him, and then finished the drink.
Waited...
...No more images. 'Well, hopefully that 's the end of them,' he mumbled.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Wednesday January 14th, 2009 9:17:47 AM
Axara enjoys the vegetable and the water. She shakes her head as her male companions eats astronomic quantities of food. "Men! The eat like pigs and when they stop adventuring and their metabolism slow down, they wonder why they get fat!"
She looks at Feygarl and whispers to his ear. "You should let me or Rollo have a look at your wound and your potion. Something is not right!"
Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37] Wednesday January 14th, 2009 2:40:16 PM "We probably will now that you mention it. We have yet to secure lodging, but they sky has always been the only roof I've needed over my head. Rollo flags the waitress as she brings their plates, so that she places his at the new table.
"It's been a long journey" smiles apologizing for eating while in conversation. "What brings you to Bigtown?"
Rollo digs into the meal as he listens to the centaur.
Hmark Wednesday January 14th, 2009 2:45:19 PM
Hmark absorbs the condition of Feyjarl and Zeph, and then regards the drink before him dubiously. "Flamey Green Gnome, huh?" he remarks to himself. "Well, okay...."
Steeling himself, the young man takes a swig, and then fights to swallow the stuff. He coughs once, followed by a long forceful exhalation of air, and then breathes deeply, before gasping, "oh, that's good hooch."
Feeling much friendlier, he gives the minotaur a "come on over" wave.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17] Wednesday January 14th, 2009 3:33:28 PM
Garret looks at the vast food and shrugs. He chooses to just tear off some bread and seems quite content with it. He stands on his chair so he is tall enough to look around the room. He watches the giants and their activity with fascination.
Buhl Wednesday January 14th, 2009 3:47:27 PM
Noticing the wave, the Minotaur eases his chair backwards as he stands up. Grabbing a huge great axe's handle like you would grab a scythe, the carries it over in one hand and in the other balances his plate and cup. Leaning the axe handle up against the table with a thud, spilling some of your drink on to the table, he says, in a deep voice (like james earl jones): My apologies little ones. (pointing to the incoherent Zeph) Me no think that would happen with that drink. And me sorry me spill your drink and food. Me clumsy ox.. then stopping for a second, he lets out a loud roaring laught and after a few seconds looks to you saying again: Get it, Me clumsy ox. (pointing to his horns)
Then he takes a seat saying: Tanks fer da offer, maname is Buhl

At the centaur's table, Rollo speaks of perhaps acquiring lodging. The centaur nods. "The open sky is well enough," he concedes, "but it is perhaps not best to sleep in the open when giants are about. They are easily tempted to... to make mischief."
Rollo asks how he came to be there. "Me? Oh, I live here. Have for years." He thrusts out a hand. "Caleb Windrunner, scholar and explorer. Well, more scholar of late. I'm getting to old to go gadding about."
"The caravanserai?" he replies to Selemar. "Yes, it's a good place to stay. You know," he begins, clearly eager to share his scholarship with others, "inns were unknown to the giants before they built Bigtown so close to the trade route. The first brave souls who stopped here were surprised to find no place for them to stay, and asked the giants about it. I gather it took some time to explain the concept to the giants. The caravanserai was one of their first efforts, and now I suspect they're quite proud of it. Though they themselves, of course, feel obligated to scoff at 'tiny folk' customs."
Meanwhile, Feyjarl continues to show symptoms of something very odd going on with his wound and the cure for it. Axara notices, and offers assistance.
At an invitation from Hmark, the minotaur Buhl joins the party, just in time for Zeph to wake up and become violently ill. He manages to find the privy in time, and returns feeling considerably better.
Standing up to get a better view, Garret sees a new giant enter the tavern. This one is a little taller than most, and is wearing a leather jerkin similar to the gate-guard's. Some kind of badge is pinned to the front. He walks to the bar and orders a drink, exchanging hearty greetings with some of the patrons.
Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29] Thursday January 15th, 2009 2:20:32 AM
Feyjarl smiles at Axara, "Thank you but it's fine. It doesn't usually get like this, I'll sort it out when I get back to Zhang. She'll put me right again."
Feyjarl listens to Buhl to see what information he might have, rubbing again at the brand on his neck...
...then it occurs to him... 'I don't even know what it says,' he tries to trace the lines of the brand and then, is hit by a flash of pain in his head. Squinting from it, it passes almost instantly, blinking slightly, he loses track of his previous thoughts and completely forgets the brand.
"Welcome Buhl, and cheers for the hearty brew," he looks over at Zeph returning from the privy, "I'd imagine the best cure for him would be another of the gnomes!"
Buhl Thursday January 15th, 2009 3:34:11 AM Me no think another green drink be good fer him. Food be better, and maybe a nap. Den he be good as new.
Turning to Axara, a concerned look cross his brow: Me sorry for making you not feel good. Me not mean to be shocking. Me go back to me table so you not feel so not good.
And Buhl gets up, and with just his wine, and axe, he goes back to his table. Orders another wine and a few pieces of fruit, and just sits there in his own thoughts. Turning to Axara after a few minutes, she can plainly see an apologetic look on his face, then he resumes just watching the tavern, taking interest in, and nodding to, the guardsman.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Thursday January 15th, 2009 8:09:16 AM
Axara sits in silence after Buhl leaves the table. 'another win for miss Congeniality! For someone pretending to be so tolerant, you are closet biggot! Proud of you are you?"
Finally, feeling quite humbled by her reflections, she gets up and walks toward Buhl. She extends her hand. "I am so sorry for my reaction. It is the first time I am near someone of your kind and I really reacted like a uncultured, untravelled, unexposed farmgirl. I apologize for it. It will take me some times to get used to you as I was talk that manotaurs are mindless brutes. You are proving me the opposite so give me some times to get used to you.
Before can say anything, she takes his hand and move for him to follow him to the table.
Once there, she looks at Feygarl. This is none of my business but I do seem to know a thing or two about women. Yes, under this ice mask is a hot blooded female. No one can "fix" you. Not that Zhang of yours. You need real medical and magical attention. Something is quite wrong. I also wonder if you knew what your brand, .. I mean your tatoo said. Can I look at it?"
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17] Thursday January 15th, 2009 8:28:17 AM
Garret watches the new arrival and nudges Zeph as he returns. He gestures towards the larger giant and says, "Looks like they have some sort of law around here. I can't imagine what laws he enforces, but he could throw me in his pocket and I'd never see the light of day again."
Buhl Thursday January 15th, 2009 10:09:35 AM
Smiles when Axara shakes his hand. And when she apologizes. And nods his head in understanding when she makes the remark mindless brutes.
Following her back over to the table, leaning his axe yet again against the table, he sits down, making sure to be more gentle and not spilling anything on their table. Buhl listens to their conversation.
Yes, law. Dey have law. For dem. Then Buhl leans forward, whispering: Dey have Giant law. Little peoples dey hurt. Ogres scum. Humans slave. Me no like it. Me ready to leave but me no want leave alone. Maybe you let Buhl leave wit you. Me strong. /flexes muscles Me fight good. Me not talk your tongue good but me axe speak all language and help you where you go. Me no hurt little peoples.Motions to everyone at the table, and towards the gnome. What say you?
Buhl sits back, eyeing the Giant guardsman at the bar, and back to the group. Then, drains his cup and pushes it away from him.
Selemar Thursday January 15th, 2009 12:11:01 PM
"thank you Caleb. We appreciate your help. Seems odd that they wouldn't have inns, but I ghuess they don't often have visitors. Any other customs we might need to know of, if it isn't taking too much of your time, that is."
Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37] Thursday January 15th, 2009 12:31:16 PM "Scholar you say? You maybe able to help us." Rollo smiles. "We've actually come to Nag-Fohrrah on a mission to recover a item lost near the shadow mountains. It was known as the Mercy of the Gods, a group of pilgrims were taking it to Aisildur, but something happened to them before they arrived.
"Now I assume that you don't know every traveler that makes his way through town, but since the item bears some scholastic enticement I thought you might have noticed it's passing among the rocks. "
Rollo continuously picking at the plate in front of him has nearly devoured half of it's contents and shows no sign of stopping.
[b]"If you do not know I can understand, perhaps you would know of someone who could supply us with some information.?"
Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3 Thursday January 15th, 2009 1:17:40 PM
Zeph walks back to the table, trying his best to stay from under anyone's feet. He climbs back into his chair and looks at Garret. Then Zeph traces Garret's gaze to the Giant with the badge on him.
Zeph turns to his companions at the table, Axara, Garret, Hmark and Feyjarl, and whispers, "What do you guys think? Think he may know something about pilgrims with a grail in tote?"
Then Zeph notices the new, large, arrival at the table, he turns to Buhl, "Oh, hi there. Thanks for the drink. Sorry if my constitution fails me at times... wasn't expecting that and I didn't want to be rude." Zeph says kindly, with a raised eyebrow. "Um. I have no objections to you traveling with us for some time. Especially if it is to escape a place you don't like, we all know how that feels."
Hmark Thursday January 15th, 2009 1:52:07 PM
Much like he did with the barmaid, Hmark watches Axara walk over to the minotaur with some interest, although he feigns nonchalance while she returns (and can see him).
He nods along as Buhl introduces himself and his desire to accompany them. "Works for me," he replies, still feeling the effects of the Green Gnome thingy. He offers a hand. "I'm Hmark."
Buhl Thursday January 15th, 2009 2:23:27 PM
Shakes Hmark's hand, trying not to break bones, but being firm.
Green drink stout. Me tink hearty little people like you could use a good drink here. Imod knows me need one here. Or ten. and with that said turns, holds up his wine cup and motions for a refill. When the barwench arrives he adds: and whatever dey have, me pay. Handing her 25 gold pieces to cover the green drinks and his wine and the rounds of drinks for the little folks.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Thursday January 15th, 2009 4:14:04 PM
Axara looks at Hmark for a second wondering "Am I dreaming or did he check me out when I went to the the bull? Nah ... I got to be dreaming. He seems like a focused farm boy trying to lay the adventurer. Since he joins he has been quiet. I got to stop thinking of myself as being the center of their thoughts. I know I can look hot but since this adventure started I have been quite bitchy. So I better stop dreaming."
She stopped eating the vegetables and just sips her water trying not to stare at Buhl although she is not that successful. She looks at the horn, the nuzzle, the bovine eyes and ears. It will take me sometimes to think of him as a man, rather that a monster. Well at least I don;t to worry about his advances. I surely have little in common with a cow, well as long as I watch what I eat and get plenty of exercises. with my luck, I will be stuck going vigil time with him. Boy this should be interesting to say the least. This is going to be a loooooooooooooooooooong mission. "
Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29] Thursday January 15th, 2009 10:02:23 PM
Feyjarl looks at Axara, "Zhang will fix it, she always has. She's good with things like that."
"A brand? Tattoos? Hahaha, seems you've had a few too many flaming gnomes yourself!" Feyjarl exclamed, "I have no such markings, only scars Madame."
He smiled at Axara's facial response, "Surely there are more interesting things going on here than body markings. Let's turn our thoughts to arranging the nights sleeping arrangements... Not that I am being lewd or suggestive, that certainly isn't my intention at all. More that we clearly aren't going anywhere outside of town today so we may as well prepare ourselves."
"What say you all?" Feyjarl says turning to the rest of the table, "are we kipping down here for the night? We can go check out the temples and pilgriums afterwards."
DM Kathy Friday January 16th, 2009 12:59:17 AM
[OOC: The conversation with Buhl seems to be ticking along nicely, so I won't shove in unless required. :) Keep it up.]
"Pilgrims? Going to Aisildur?" Caleb turns an astonished gaze at Rollo. "But--but, this is incredible! I spoke to them when they were here." He looks thoughtful. "My, it must be nearly 20 years ago now. I remember them, though, because they---well. They were memorable. They asked me about the way south. I copied my best map for them."
He looks across the room, to where the tall giant with the badge still sits at the bar. "You might talk to Sheriff Zak'Lrmm there. I think he spoke with them, too, when they were here."
Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37] d20+9=16 ; Friday January 16th, 2009 1:32:12 AM
Rollo smiles at his their luck. "Memorable you say? In what way?"
The gnome follows up after Calebs answer. "Any chance we could also get a copy of that map you gave them? I would be happy to pay you for your assistance."
If the centaur agrees they will arrange to meet where ever the centaur sees fit. (I'm assuming that he doesn't have the map on him currently)
Once arrangements have been made, Rollo will say his 'til laters', hop down from his chair, and head over to the giant.
In Giant loud enough for him to hear all the way up there and over the din of the tavern patrons. [spoiler.]"Excuse me. Sheriff Zak'Lrmm? Would you mind if we sat down for a drink? On me of course. I have a question, or two that I think you might be able to answer."[/spoiler]

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17] Friday January 16th, 2009 8:53:21 AM
Garret nods when the large minotaur joins them at the table. When his hand is offered, Garret smiles and waves, afraid of being accidentally crushed should he shake hands. "You are a large fellow, my friend, and certainly have a lot of muscles. I have no objection to you joining us, but I do ask you look down as we travel so you don't have to pull me out from between your toes one day!"
When Rollo walks across the room, Garret jumps down as he says, "What is that crazy fellow up to? He's going to get himself stomped out there!"
Garret runs over and looks around, ready to grab Rollo out of the way should some giant not notice him and be ready to step on him.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Friday January 16th, 2009 9:47:58 AM
Axara looks at Feygarl, trying her best not to roll her eyes "She always fixes it? Does this seems strange that no powerful cleric nor mage can figure it out but your little sweetheart can? I am not sure this make sense. And I am afraid you are wrong. This is a brand not a scar. If you do not believe asks Rollo. The gnome is really pure at heart. But frankly, do what you want. It is your life after all."
She watches Rollo go see the giant, followed by the halfling, which helps her stop starring at Buhl bovine face.
Buhl Friday January 16th, 2009 12:24:23 PM Me always watch where me steps. Me squish buddy when I was a wee lad. Him good frog, jumped far. Me still sad at times for him but me knows him be in good pond in sky. So you no worry about where me step, you safe. Its those big lugs who don't watch who dey step on.
Turning back, Buhl leans his head foward towards Axara, lowering his horns at her.
Go ahead, me no mind, touch dem. Eventually little peoples want to and I find it fun for da kids who shy away from me too. Good ice breaker. But only the kiddies get to pull my hair and sit on my back. Buhl says with a geniune smile.
Hmark Friday January 16th, 2009 1:45:17 PM
Hmark glances over to see Rollo moving throught the bar floor, and then Garret going after him. "I guess he's done working over the centaur," he observes, taking another sip from the Greeny Gnome.
His eyes swivel back over to Buhl, who's offered his horns for Axara to touch. "For a huge guy with a huger axe, you sure are a gentle soul," he notes. An earlier remark penetrates the alcoholic fog.
"Who's Imod?"
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Friday January 16th, 2009 2:48:45 PM
Hesitantly, Axara moves her hand forward and touches the horn, feeling the pointy top and sensing how much carnage they could do.
"I am sorry for starring so much. As I said, I have never been close to one your kind. I am sure I must also look different to you. If you want, you ..... heuh ... nothing ....." She looks away, red at a tomato " what was I thinking, nerly telling him to touc ha place that look different to him. Am I insane ... These horns ,,,, they really feel like the cow we had at the farm .. what is he? A man? a beast? A monster?"
Buhl Friday January 16th, 2009 4:49:45 PM

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3 Friday January 16th, 2009 8:23:45 PM
Zeph watches Rollo's actions and seriously wishes he had studied Giant instead of Elven in his younger days.
Then he listens to Buhl and Axara's conversation with interest. "You seem to be a genuinely good companion Buhl, my name is Zeph in case I didn't say it earlier."
Buhl Friday January 16th, 2009 9:55:30 PM You say lots but me no remember you say name. Me sorry you get sick too Zeph. Me not play trick on you again. Smiles buhl.
Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29] Sunday January 18th, 2009 6:39:40 PM
Feyjarl smiles at Axara, "Thank you."
He glances at Rollo and Garret, then speaks to all at the table, "Guess there's not much point in giong with them, if a fight ensues we'll be tomorrow's dinner anyway."
DM Kathy Tuesday January 20th, 2009 12:19:43 AM
"Well..." Caleb hesitates, as if trying to figure out how to phrase something with delicacy. "Well, they were very, um, devout. Quite dedicated to their gods, and, ah, anxious to, uh....to share their knowledge with the folk of Aisildur. And Shadow Mountain. And, well, and basically anyone they came into contact with."
In response to Rollo's question about the map, Caleb says, "I can't sell you a copy of the exact map, because I've done some research and exploration since then, and I now have a better, more accurate map. I did not keep the old version. I can certainly sell you a copy of the new version, though, if you are interested. I run a little shop on Granite Street; stop by when you can." And he gives you directions.
At the bar, the sheriff turns when he is hailed. He sees nobody at eye level, so he looks down...and down...and down...until at last he sees Rollo, calmly conversing in Giant. A grin splits his face. "Ha! That's real good, little fellow," he booms in the same language. "And I never turn down a drink!" Laughter and a few slaps on the back from those around him.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17] Tuesday January 20th, 2009 8:20:20 AM
Garret heaves a huge sigh of relief when the sheriff looks down and sees Rollo... before he gets trampled. He still watches carefully around as the sheriff talks to them, in case some other drunk giant doesn't see them waaay down there.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Tuesday January 20th, 2009 9:32:14 AM

Zeph says to his companions at the table, constantly looking about for anyone who may have ill-intent for him or his friends. (Spot=14)
"Hey, Axara, mind if I take a look at that spellbook we got from the mercs? I have one I acquired a long time ago, and I was wondering if I could practice copying down some spells." Zeph says to the Sorceress.
(OOC: Any chance of there being a list of spells in there? :)
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Tuesday January 20th, 2009 12:37:35 PM
Axara looks at Zeph with a surprised but admirative look on her gorgeous face. "I did not know you were a student of the arcane. I did not see you as ... sophisticated. Here it is. Enjoy."
She pulls out the spell book out of her back pack and give it to Zeph. "I was planning to sell it in an arcane shop as my magic is not learned."
Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37] d20+9=22 ; Tuesday January 20th, 2009 3:34:55 PM
((OOC: Rollo conducts the conversation in Giant, just don't want to waste you time putting it all in spoilers. So, if you don't tend to read spoilers not intended for you, you might want to skip this post.)
"Fantastic. Drinks for the lot." Rollo doesn't want to leave the sheriffs comrades out of the libations.
After the drinks arrive Rollo moves into his questioning."As you can tell I'm not from around here, and you being the astute member of the law enforcement community will initially ask yourself then 'why are you here', and that indeed speaks volumes for the glowing endorsement of your abilities that I have grown accustomed to hearing from the local townsfolk. Now to answer the question you will so deftly ask, I would say that I am here on as a wanderlust stricken traveler out to see the sights of this fine metropolis, but I feel your perception would see through any subterfuge I would attempt, so I will speak plainly, and save us the air, leaving more time for drinking. Cheers!"
Rollo takes a drink, but is back to his speech the moment the mug leaves his lips. "We are in search of a group of pilgrims who are now a group of missing pilgrims. They came through your town some odd twenty years ago. My understanding is that they were a memorable lot due to the zealous nature in which they touted their faith. They were on route to Aisildur, and from my understanding they never reached their destination. Cheers!"
Again drinks up, drinks down, back to talking, "Now, My companions and I are here to discern the cause of this disappearance, and would appreciate any assistance you may have to offer. What is this we are drinking it is mighty tasty, another round for the men. "

Feyjarl sits, relaxing in his chair, thoughts drifting.
'Brand?' PAIN...
'Scar?' Nothing...
'Odd... Brand?' PAIN PAIN...
Squinting and holding his head... 'Let's just call it a scar and be done with it then.' Nothing.
Like waking from a dream he looks around, remembering what's going on around him, and completely forgetting 'whatever it is' on his neck.
He tries to read Rollo's lips across teh room, but with no skill in it the results are interesting... 'endorphine', 'drown folk', 'beers' he murmurs, "Odd conversation," he says aloud.
DM Kathy Wednesday January 21st, 2009 12:37:19 AM
As you talk, Zeph asks Axara for a peek in the spellbook. There are spells in there, though at the moment Zeph understands little of them. Perhaps further study will help unlock their secrets.
Rollo buys a round for the sheriff and his friends. "Call me Stretch," the sheriff says. Grinning, he adds, "That's what my drinking buddies call me."
As the little gnome waxes eloquent, though, the giants begin to look puzzled. They look at each other, then back to Rollo. When he finishes, there are several opinions, but the consensus is: "Rrr?" (Followed closely by "Mwha?")
When Rollo (presumably) asks his question using smaller words, the Sherrif Stretch looks sour. "Oh, yeah, I remember them," he says. "I was a deputy then. The whole time they was here, we got nothin' but complaints. They just couldn't stop runnin' their mouths, preachin' on and on." He shakes his head. "Guess they thought we was heathens or somethin', worshippin' Og-Tlakkhen-Mouw 'stead of their Domi or whatnot." [Rollo knows that Og-Tlakkhen-Mouw would roughly be translated as "Mighty Granite" in the Common tongue.] "Everybody was glad to see them go."
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17] Wednesday January 21st, 2009 8:25:05 AM
Not understanding a single word of the conversation, Garret just stands and smiles a lot. When the lot drinks, he cheers with them. Now that they seem rather peaceful, Garret relaxes a bit, but still keeps watch for stumbling drunk giants, just in case.

Zeph looks at the Centaur who talked with Rollo earlier.
I wonder if he would have any information about a certain group of individuals.
Zeph walks up to him and says, "Greetings sir. I am a companion of Rollo Nimbus, the Gnome wearing pots and pans you spoke to earlier. I am searching for a certain group of individuals of scrupulous nature. It is indeed terrible business I must conduct with them, but certain groups must be brought to justice- certainly you know what I mean."
Then Zeph leans in to whisper to Caleb: DMKATHY (or anyone else who may be interested) Highlight to display spoiler: {"Sir, would you know of a group of followers of Jancassis, the old goddess? More of a cult really... If you would rather not discuss such things, then I understand, but any information would be useful. If you do not know about any such group... then perhaps a Thieves Guild could assist me, if you were to know of such places?"

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29] Wednesday January 21st, 2009 5:18:50 PM
Feyjarl looks over at Axara perplexed, "'She' who? Who are you talking about?" Feyjarl starts to worry that he may have fallen asleep momentarily...
'Axara seems anoyed about something,' he thinks, 'sarcastic too... I wonder what she's talking about?'
"Axara, I'm sorry if I somehow offended you, but have to admit that I have no idea what you are referring to. What does this 'she' want me to believe? I think I am quite a happy soul all things considered, I apologise if my being happy about whatever it is you're referring to is annoying or upsetting to you,"
Feyjarl clearly has absolutely no idea what Axara is referring to, and is equally clearly concerned that he has offended this somewhat anger filled young woman.
To the table in general... "Is it me, or is it hot in here?" Feyjarl loosens the straps on his armour and remove the top, unfortunately his undershirt rises up with the armour. This reveals far too many scars to count, and one particularly deep ugly scar running from one corner of his back all the way up to his shoulder. Mixed in amongst the battle scars, there are clearly a great many whip scars as well, seemingly received over many years.
He quickly pulls his under-shirt down, glancing around him hoping no one was offended by 'revealing himself' - something inside of him made him feel very shy about what had happened and very worried that he had revealed his scarred body.
He smiles, blushing slightly... Like a scalded child almost.
Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37] Wednesday January 21st, 2009 7:07:34 PM "Did anything prompt them to leave, or did they leave on their own accord?"[b]After getting what information he could from the giants, he continues to chat with his new friend about whatever topics strike their fancy. When they begin to run short on topics Rollo closes the camaraderie with his new pal Stretch , buys them all one to grow on, and heads back to the group around the table.
[b]"Well, it seems 20 years ago Caleb there gave a map to the pilgrims to follow to Aisildur. He's agreed to give us a copy, actually a more updated copy. All we have to do is stop off at his shop and pick it up. You going to finish that?" Rollo indicates the food remaining on the table.
DM Kathy Thursday January 22nd, 2009 12:27:08 AM Zeph leaves the group for a moment to speak with the centaur. The man looks a little puzzled, but answers in an equally low tone, Highlight to display spoiler: {"I can't say I've heard of anything like that in Bigtown. There aren't many Jancassis followers among the giants; most creatures of Shadow Mountain look to the Mountain itself for their spiritual needs. If there is such a cult, it would probably be among the human population, and it would be very secret indeed, if I could live here so many years without getting a whiff of it. As for Thieves' Guilds...well, I'm sure you've seen that the Giants do not value subtlety. They have clubs and gangs, but nothing resembling a Thieves' Guild." }
"They left 'cause they wanted to," the sheriff tells Rollo. "They was eager to 'spread the word' with the other heathens of Shadow Mountain. And the Aisildurans." He snorts. "Not likely, but there was no talkin' to them."
Rollo returns to the group and reports on what he has learned. You have a lead on a possible place to stay tonight (the caravanserai), and a lead on a good map of the area (Caleb's shop).
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17] Thursday January 22nd, 2009 8:33:23 AM
Garret follows Rollo back to the table, relieved that they did not get stepped on. "I think perhaps we should head for this caravanserai soon. I would be more comfortable where there aren't giants drinking vast quantities of ale and stumbling around me."
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Thursday January 22nd, 2009 9:36:05 AM
Axara looks at Feygarl, visibly upset. "Are you dense Feygarl? Or you are making fun of me? I know that I am not the sharpest knife in this draw but I do have a good memory. YOu mentions the name of the woman you share your bed with. It was Zhang or Zheng. She is the one that gave you the cream. Now you pretend I am making thigns up. Go get lost in the Abyss with her."
She turns away from him, raging and fuming.
She calms down and turns towards him to apologize just at the moment where his shirt goes up and she sees the whip marks. "I am sorry Feygarl. I did not know your father whippped you as a child. Some men think it is the best way to teach their boys. That would explain your reliance on Zheng, to escape your childhood abuse memories."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OOC: I know that it is not the father who whipped Feygarl but Axara does not know.
Hmark Thursday January 22nd, 2009 4:50:51 PM
Hmark does his best to ignore Axara and Feyjarl, remaining quite content to sip on the Green Gnome before him.

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29] Thursday January 22nd, 2009 5:21:33 PM
Feyjarl is confused, memories of what was discussed a few minutes earlier have been completely erased. He doesn't remember speaking about a brand or even that there is one. He's quite confused and worried when he speaks to Axara.
"Zhang yes, she runs the camp where I have been for a long time..."
A pause, confusion crossing his face.
"The ointment is for the scar I have, it's magical in nature all attempts to magically remove it have failed. Quite a few have tried. Even Zhang has not managed it."
A smile crosses his face at the mention of her name.
"My father never laid a hand on me, my mother either..."
Confusion again surrounds him, then shock, "My parents certainly didn't hit me. Not once."
Feyjarl then goes into a dialogue with himself, back and forwards, back and forwards. "Where did the whip marks come from?" "Zhang didn't do it... Did she?" "Certainly wasn't my parents, I'm certain of that... But then who's left? Zhang couldn't have... Could she?" "Must have been between being with my parents and meeting Zhang... When did that happen? How did I meet Zhang...?"
Feyjarl is getting quite flustered and a little worried about flashbacks he's having and the mumbling speech. He grabs his hair and pulls it, gritting his teeth, and shutting his eyes tightly. PAIN... He jerks upright, like a bolt of lightening has hit him, the scar on his back suddenly feeling like it's on fire! He gasps, sweat on his forehead now, he feels like he's on fire...!
He half gets off and half falls off the chair and grabs for his bag, desperately searching for something to ease the pain.

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3 d20+8=22 ; Thursday January 22nd, 2009 8:53:46 PM
Zeph nods at Caleb's information. "That's exactly what I thought. Humans, perhaps I should question some of those residence. Thank you very much, good sir, our company should be at your shop soon to purchase a copy of the map." Zeph says with a friendly smile.
Then he returns back to his companion's table to see Feyjarl writhing and the tail end of the argument.
He turns to Rollo and the rest of the group. "I think its best we find that Inn that Caleb was talking about.".
Then Zeph grabs Feyjarl's arm to assist him to the exit of the Tavern. "Excuse my friend, the hard liquor seems to have odd affects on his small frame." Zeph says loud enough for the Giants to hear if anyone looks suspiciously in their direction.
(Bluff=22, although I doubt that really required one, I'm sure it helps.)
DM Kathy Friday January 23rd, 2009 12:23:12 AM
On the brink of self-realization, Feyjarl finds the implications overwhelming. Zeph (and perhaps others) hustle him from the tavern, seeking a place of shelter.
A few inquiries lead you to the caravanserai.
[OOC: I had to look the word up in the dictionary, so I'll just mention that a caravanserai is an inn built around a large courtyard. Caravans can safely rest in the courtyard while their travelers sleep in the inn.]
The Bigtown caravanserai is located near the gate where you entered the city, and is obviously geared toward human travelers. The common room boasts both human-sized and giant-sized furniture, and the Hill Giant innkeeper assures you that your rooms are "tiny folk" size.
The common room is not precisely crowded, but is doing a brisk business, especially for the middle of the afternoon. Giants mingle with human travelers, two barmaids (one human and one giant) work the room, and another giant woman tends the bar.
Buhl Friday January 23rd, 2009 1:10:11 AM

Axara grabs Feygarl's arm and helps Zeph taking him out. "Yep. Everything is fine under the sun.
Once they are inside the caravanserai, she proposes "I think we should buy the map this afternoon and be ready to leave first thing in the morning..
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17] Friday January 23rd, 2009 9:47:24 AM
Garret nods as Axara proposes leaving quickly. "I agree. And I think that as confusing as it might be, perhaps we should still all stay together as we go for the map. Despite all the friendliness so far, we must remember that many of these giants view us as little more than cattle and would not hesitate to decide we are slaves that they can sell."
Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37] Friday January 23rd, 2009 11:37:29 AM
After lodging is arranged, Rollo sits with the rest of the group to discuss plans. He is in full agreement that they should get the map and leave as soon as possible.
As soon as everyone is set at the inn, Rollo and whoever wish to come with will head over to Caleb's shop to get the map.
Buhl Friday January 23rd, 2009 1:14:17 PM Hallo little man. (referring to Rollo, since they havent been formally introduced) Me Buhl. Me axe at you service. We no meet yet. Holds out his enormous hand.

Selemar Sunday January 25th, 2009 12:49:19 PM
"So Buhl, are you looking to join us? I should warn you, we may be odd. Smaller than the inhabitants of this town, but still...odd" Looks at Feyjarl, Axara, Zeph, Rollo.
"Perhaps odd."

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3 d20+7=27 ; Sunday January 25th, 2009 2:35:38 PM Indeed, big things may try to eat us. Zeph thinks as the crew enters the inn.
"So, whats the plan? We crashing here for the night and going to Caleb's shop in the morning? I would like to venture with Rollo to the shop." Zeph says as he pulls out an ink, quill, and parchment and begins to scribble in some sort of fancy cursive writing.
"Someone should document our ventures for the generations to come, don't you think?" Then Zeph pauses and thinks for a bit, then he looks out the window to make sure nobody is spying on them.
"Master Buhl, I suppose we should inform you that our group is on a bit of a quest to destroy a great evil in the world. It will be slightly dangerous, but nothing your strong muscle and our collective group's quick wit can't handle." Zeph says with a smile, thinking that is a good enough explanation for now... don't wanna say too much too soon.
(Spot=27, nat 20)
DM Kathy Sunday January 25th, 2009 11:11:26 PM
The minotaur Buhl offers to join your group, and most of you are amenable. Feyjarl is still trying to come to grips with his past.
Axara suggests leaving as early as possible tomorrow, and Rollo agrees. Zeph volunteers to accompany the gnome to Caleb's shop to get the map.
There is still time for that errand this afternoon, so once the bottles of wine have been delivered to the table, Rollo and Zeph (and anyone else who wants to come along) leave the caravansarai and head for the shop, following the directions Rollo received this morning.
Caleb's shop proves to be a (relatively) small store, pleastantly dusty, filled with books, scrolls, maps, charts, navigational tools, and any number of odd curios. He is putting the finishing touches on the map copy when you arrive, and readily sells it to you for 10 gold.
He also has a final warning for you: "If you're keen to track down those pilgrims," he says, "you should probably seek among the Hawkmen. But be careful. They are a proud, insular people, and will not welcome interference from outsiders." Caleb sighs. "I told the pilgrims much the same, but I fear they did not heed my warning."
Buhl Monday January 26th, 2009 1:01:35 AM Fer evil to thrive, good must not be done. Me fraid evil no like me, and you.
Watches the little folk leave for their errand, choosing to stay behind.
Buhl will wait at the table, slowly sipping his wine, making sure to eat something so as not to get slow of mind. Watching the goings on. Making mental note of anyone coming and going, seeming to take special interest in his new friends. Buhl also goes to the room and back every so often, not on a regular schedule, making sure no snoopybodies are disturbing anything.
Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3 Monday January 26th, 2009 2:37:51 AM
Zeph raises an eyebrow at the warning of the Hawkmen.
Before he and Rollo leaves, Zeph will ask "Is there any way to befriend or at least avoid offending the Hawkmen? I don't wanna get killed over a social fubar." Zeph asks curiously.

When the two head for the shop, Garret suggests that they all go, just so they can stay together. He follows them, blending into the surroundings, which, because of his size, seems much easier than normal. As they walk, he watches to see if anyone appears to take a special interest in them.

"Hawkmen? I wonder if they are any relation to the Menhawks of Redleaf pass.Do they have the body of hawks, but the feet of a man? Probably no relation at all. I'm sure you've marked on the map the path the pilgrims most likely took, and the location of the hawkmen camp."
Rollo looks at the map. "Very nice penmanship, and color selection."
Rollo listens to the answer the centaur provides Zeph, and when all questions have been answered he will head back to the caravansarai, rejoin the others, and set off on their journey following the routh Caleb indicated.

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29] Monday January 26th, 2009 9:24:59 PM
Feyjarl appears to have sectioned his mind away from the pain, but still circums to it every once in a while.
He waits outside the shop, and starts ferreting through his bags. He pulls out the ointment from the bottom of the bag and pops the lid... 'Thank the gods!' He thinks, 'This should do the trick.'
DM Kathy Monday January 26th, 2009 10:38:58 PM Buhl, Selemar, and Hmark remain at the inn, finishing the wine, chatting, and (in Buhl's case) keeping an eye out for suspicious activity. Activity in the inn begins to pick up as the time for the evening meal approaches, but you can detect no particular interest directed toward your group.
At some point, you are asked if you want dinner, which appears to consist of enormous meat pies.
The rest of the group goes to Caleb's shop. "A way to befriend the hawkmen?" Caleb ponders Zeph's question. "I've never heard of one. As for not offending them, well, your best bet for that is to avoid them altogether. They are proud, I am told, and easily offended. However, if you are seeking these pilgrims, you may not be able to avoid the Hawkmen. The last time I saw them, they intended to travel to Hawkman territory." He shows you where on the map, though he does not mark it.
"Menhawks?" he says eagerly to Rollo. "I must say, I've never heard anything of them. How many of them are there? Do they have bird heads or man-heads? What language do they speak?" And he eagerly jots notes on whatever you can tell him.
"Hawkmen," he explains, "do not appear to be part hawk. Physically, they resemble short, wiry elves. Legend has it that they once had wings, but the gods took them away for some transgression." He pauses. "Er...best not to mention that part. I'm told they're sensitive on the subject."
If you are interested in Hawkmen, Caleb tells you what he knows, which is remarkably similar to what's in the Shadow Mountain Woldipedia page.
Buhl Tuesday January 27th, 2009 1:15:10 AM Me hungry. Me take meat pie. And more wine. And some meat pie fer me new friends. And for da puppy too.
If nothing else happens, after meals, wine and conversation. Buhl will turn in after 1 more bottle of wine. Waking up in the morning, doing some exercising. Cleaning up, dressing and then goes to tavern to order breakfast, with, as you guess it, wine. Should the group decide to leave to begin their trek, after the morning meal Buhl will head back to the room and get dressed. (ie armored up) Putting his pack on comfortably, then hefts his axe over his shoulder, Buhl walks out to where the others are gathered, with metal gleaming everywhere and visor of helm in the up position.
With his lips curled into a smile, Buhl remarks: It good to finally be gone from here. Me have enough of giant town to last me life. Adventure is good fer soul.
*Positions himself between the front scouts and the middle crew.*
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17] Tuesday January 27th, 2009 9:24:17 AM
Garret agrees with Buhl. "Indeed, it's one thing being small, but these giants really make me nervous. I don't like being here a bit. Let's be off to see the hawkmen."
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Tuesday January 27th, 2009 10:28:03 AM
Axara learns about the Hawkmen and wonders how it will take her to offend them.
Selemar Tuesday January 27th, 2009 10:42:12 AM
"The...puppy's name is Lango. He's a good puppy most of the time." Selemar's grin is not feigned in the least.
After some wine and meat pies, he'll be a bit more relaxed, and probably warm some to the minotaur. He seems to be fairly uncomplicated, and strikes me as honest. Seems a decent companion
When the others return, he's eager to here about the hawkmen. He wonders how long it will take Axara to offend them :)
Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37] Tuesday January 27th, 2009 10:46:55 AM
Rollo will ramble with stories of menhawks for as long as Caleb seems interested, and then returns the favor by listening to Caleb about the Hawkmen.
Fascinating." Rollo sees the others are anxious to leave, so he concludes his conversation."It was a pleasure to meet you, and I look forward to the day that our paths cross again. May Eberyon watch over you."
Rollo heads back to the others, retrieves Cornelius, and sets off with the others.
Caleb's description of the Hawkman's interest in flight reminds him that he is carrying a book on that very subject matter, he decides that this would be an opportune time to give it a read, and does so as they travel.
Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3 Tuesday January 27th, 2009 1:56:25 PM
Zeph walks about with Rollo, making mental notes every now and then and looking about the shop to see what he can see.
I have always liked books, perhaps I should read more on our trip. Lets see, what looks interesting here?
"Caleb, would you happen to have any books on mathematics... or perhaps any history... or maybe a book on dragons?" Zeph asks politely, hoping to net a book of one of the subjects he is interested in.
After that, Zeph will return to the Inn with Rollo, partake of a meat pie, and leave when the group does, but votes to sleep in the inn for the night and leave in the morning if we haven't decided yet.
Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29] Tuesday January 27th, 2009 10:52:02 PM
Feyjarl, now relieved from his ailment, and smiling gets himself a meatpie and another one for the road.
DM Kathy Tuesday January 27th, 2009 11:57:53 PM
Caleb has several books on history. Since Zeph is just beginning, he recommends a general history of the Elennian Peninsula, which he sells for 20 gp.
You repair to the caravansarai and partake of meat pies for dinner. Your evening rest is undisturbed (well, there are a few commotions downstairs--giants yelling--but nothing untoward). Fresh bread, cold meats, and cheese are available for breakfast in the morning. You leave the inn and make your way back to the gate.
On your way, you pass a spot where a human work gang is repairing the road, under the watchful eye of a hill giant with a huge whip and a sour expression. You also see a couple of ogres, looking thin and dispirited, rummaging through a trash heap.
Another bored-looking guard (or perhaps it's the same one; hard to say) watches you exit via the massive gate. You follow the track back to the main trade road as the sun rises and the day grows warm.
You do not stay on the trade road for long, however, as it continues south and your destination is westward, back toward Shadow Mountain. There is no road leading to the lands of the Hawkmen; you must find your own way. This is easy at first; you travel through settled farmlands on various side roads, able to ask directions from people who clearly think you're out of your minds.
Once you leave the farmlands, however, for the forested lower slopes of the mountain itself, you will need to use your instincts and the map to make your own trail. [i.e., now would be a good time for Survival checks]

[OOC: Yes, you still have horses]
Garret, Axara, Buhl, and Hmark are all pretty good at keeping the group going in the right direction. Good as they are, though, Selemar surpasses them. He guides the group effortlessly through the trackless forest, easily avoiding obstacles before the others even get a glimpse of them.
Buhl introduces the group to some wild edibles he comes across. Zeph reads passages aloud from his new history, much to the consternation of some of his companions. Rollo studies his book on flight, and Feyjarl manages (barely) to keep from tumbling into a brook.
For three days, you make your way up the forested lower slope. Selemar helps find the easiest path, but even he cannot change the fact that your are going uphill. Your mounts tire more readily, and you yourselves find muscles sore and aching from working to stay in a tilting saddle. By the time you make camp on the third day, the forest has thinned noticably. The slope is rocky now, dotted here and there with brush and scrubby little pines.
The air is noticably thinner here, and your mounts are clearly suffering. Some of you, as well, may be having trouble with the thinner air, especially if you have spent most of your time at sea level.

"I'll take my watch with.... Hmark! So that way we can cover the 2nd chapter of the History of New Elennia together." Zeph says with an evil smile.
Zeph will read his book until it gets dark, constantly keeping an ear and an eye out for any rustling... and especially and wiry looking elves in the area.

"Why sure, Zeph. But first, lemmee tell you about the time my dad and I inspected our cabbages. The first one was pretty good, except for a slight yellow blemish on tip of the outer leaf on the river side. So, we decided to keep that one. Now the second, it looked pretty good to me, but Pop says 'Looky thar', and sure 'nuff, there's this round hole near the base on the farmhouse side. DM Kathy Friday January 30th, 2009 12:44:08 AM
You decide to camp here for a few days, to give your lungs a chance to grow accustomed to the thinner air. Your animals seem grateful for the rest, despite the day off they had in Bigtown.
During the watches, Zeph and Hmark attempt to out-bore each other, Hmark displaying a remarkable memory for every cabbage he's ever harvested.
By the last day of your rest, your lungs seem better able to cope with the thin air, and the faint ringing sound is gone from your ears. The next morning, you are underway again.
Your progress is slow, for the way is steep. The riding dogs handle it readily enough, but the horses have a harder time of it; their hooves often sliding a little on the steep, rocky surface.
By the afternoon of the second day after your camp, you still have seen no sign of the Hawkmen. Apparantly, though, they have seen you.
Without warning, a dark-haired elf steps directly into your path, about 20 feet in front of the leader(s). He wears snug-fitting trousers and a black leather jerkin. Three hoops adorn one ear, and his bare arms sport numerous tattoos. His dark hair is cut in short tufts.
As he appears, similar-looking elves show themselves behind him, and about 50 feet to either side of you. They are holding drawn bows, arrows pointed in your direction.
The man in front of you speaks. His dialect is strange, but anyone who speaks Elvish can understand him. Highlight to display spoiler: { Halt! And venture no further into the lands of the Hawkmen! We do not welcome strangers here.}
Buhl Friday January 30th, 2009 2:59:16 AM
Knowing from other experiences and listening to many tales in the various taverns hes patronized about first contacts, Buhl stands there, axe still slung over his shoulder, attempting to look as non threatening as his 9'2" tall, Minotaur form in full plate armor will allow.
Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17] Friday January 30th, 2009 8:32:20 AM
Garret easily rides his dog up the side of the mountain, watching nervously as the horses stumble now and then. When the hawkman steps in front of them, Garret looks at him in confusion, then turns to the others, "I hope one of you can understand him, because I have no idea if he just said 'hello' or we're about to be tonight's dinner."
Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37] Friday January 30th, 2009 2:41:33 PM
Rollo speaks up in Sylvan (probably the closest sounding language he knows to elvish): "I come under the blessing of Eberyon his children, seek audience with the noble hawkmen. We mean no harm, nor disrespect." As he says these words he feels the protection Eberyon grants his emissaries.
In other words he is casting Sanctuary
Selemar d20+9=17 ; Friday January 30th, 2009 3:46:16 PM
Slender dark haired elf? It's like Selemar has a twin!
Speaks in Elvish "We do not wish to violate your borders, but are pursuing a group of evil humans who do wish to enter your lands. Have any strange priests been spotted? If they have been driven from your lands, , we'd appreciate being told where they've gone, so we need not trouble you further."
Smiles, and tries to look friendly. At least friendlier than the minotaur.
Lango is fairly unimpressed by this wolfless elf.
Diplomacy 17
Selemar Friday January 30th, 2009 3:49:17 PM
Selemar starts after a second, and looks at the rest of the group, realizing they don't speak Elvish for some reason. Its a lovely language, and only takes decades to learn properly. Lazy humans. And gnomes.
"Oh, we are being warned not to enter their lands, but otherwise he seems to mean no harm to us. Please do not attack him, as we will probably be filled with arrows shortly if you do."
Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3 d20+8=12 ; d4=3 ; d20+3=18 ; Friday January 30th, 2009 8:58:14 PM
Zeph smiles as Selemar replies and says to Selemar in Elvish, "I know, I heard him."
Then Zeph turns to the Hawkman Elf and says in Elvish, "My elvish companion is being truthful. We simply seek a group of pilgrims. If anything, we could help your people by assisting in getting them out of your lands... that is if they are still here. But we mean no harm... and I also hear that your people know a great deal about the art of flight. I am very interested in the subject and would like to discuss it if you would care to." Zeph says, with a smile, knowing what subject the Hawkmen enjoy, hoping that it will get them in their good graces.
(Was going to bluff, but dont need it, that was the 12. Diplomacy =18 the d4 roll was me clicking during lag)
Hmark Friday January 30th, 2009 10:46:05 PM
Hmark doesn't understand the language. He does understand the pointy side of all them bows.
The archer is very careful not to appear, well, target-like.
Axara[AC: 17 HP 24/24] Friday January 30th, 2009 11:28:56 PM

"What're they saying?" He says out loud, looking at everyone.
