Among the Hawkmen

DM Kathy
Sunday February 1st, 2009 10:29:56 PM

When the Hawkman speaks, Rollo responds in Sylvan. The Hawkmen give no sign that they understood him--or even heard him.

Selemar speaks to them in Elvish. The same Hawkman who spoke before replies in elvish Highlight to display spoiler: {Human priests? No. We have seen no humans, apart from your companions.}

Zeph elaborates, and gets a similar response. Highlight to display spoiler: {Pilgrims? No, we have seen nobody of that description. At least, not recently.} His only response to your question of flight is a slight frown.

He does nod to his archers, though, and they lower their bows. You see that the arrows are still nocked, but the strings are no longer pulled tight, and the arrowheads are pointed at the ground.

The man speaks again. Highlight to display spoiler: {However, if you know of evil humans headed our way, we would appreciate anything you could tell us of them, so we can be vigilant of their approach.}

Buhl
Sunday February 1st, 2009 11:36:44 PM

Breathes a sigh of relief. Knowing a battle would of been bad for the group, and for anyone else coming behind them in a gesture of friendship and understanding.

Looks around, at the rest of the little people, and gives his best non threatening smile.

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]
Monday February 2nd, 2009 1:28:41 AM

Feyjarl smiles at the "calming down" around him.

Rubbing his horse's neck absently, he suddenly feels a rack of pain across his back, he screws up his eyes tightly, managing to not gasp out loud. The pain subsides as quickly as it came, and he sits up, clearing his throat and taking a sip of water.

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17]
Monday February 2nd, 2009 8:28:25 AM

Garret nods when Selemar explains what's going on. He tries not to move too much when Selemar and Zeph speak in their language. He thinks, "That sure sounds nice. I hope it is nice." Just then the archers lower their bows, but do not relax completely. Garret smiles and nods to them, waving in greeting. He turns towards one of the archers not engaged in conversation with Zeph and Selemar and says, "Hello." He points to himself without trying to look aggressive and continues, "I am Garret."

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]
Monday February 2nd, 2009 10:34:03 AM

Axara keeps looking down at the ground, petting Miss Mare, her horse. She catches a glimpse of Feygarl pain and rolls her eyes and shakes her head.

Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37]
Monday February 2nd, 2009 10:46:03 AM

Rollo watches the goings ons,

Buhl

Walks over to Feygarl, handing him a wineskin.
Here, dis hep what ails ya. Momma alway say: Wine a day make ill go away.

Selemar
Monday February 2nd, 2009 4:21:04 PM

"They don't know of any human priests in their lands, but would like to hear more. I begin to suspect we will not be shot, but have been wrong before."

Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37]
Monday February 2nd, 2009 4:53:57 PM

"The priests were here 20 years ago, so they may be confused as to how recently they would have run into them."

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]
Monday February 2nd, 2009 6:01:55 PM

Feyjarl steadies himself as he spots Buhl approaching.

"Thank you my friend," he takes the offered wineskin and takes a very large swig of it, "I sincerely hope it does help. I fear that it may shortly become more than I am able to handle."

He smiles at Buhl , handing back the wineskin, "Nice drop that." Feyjarl smiled, "I could get used to it!"

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3
Monday February 2nd, 2009 6:54:33 PM

Zeph listens to the reply and then to Rollo and nods.

Then Zeph says to the leader in Elven, "It was some 20 years ago or so that these pilgrims came by. Certainly with the renown longevity of the elf race, someone must remember them. They were holding a chalice of sorts and heading towards Shadow Mountain, preaching to anyone who would listen to them. Any information about either the pilgrims or the chalice would be helpful." Zeph says.

Buhl
Monday February 2nd, 2009 7:27:18 PM

You keep. Me alway have more. More you drink of wine more da pain go away. says a mischievously smiling Minotaur.

Hmark
Monday February 2nd, 2009 9:14:23 PM

Hmark nods along in pleasant ignorance as Zeph and the elves chatter away.

DM Kathy
Monday February 2nd, 2009 10:48:01 PM

Most of you do the time-honored thing for conversations in a language you don't know: you smile and nod, and hope to be clued in eventually.

A look of understanding crosses the Hawkman's face at Zeph's explanation, and he replies in his odd Elvish. Highlight to display spoiler: {"Ah, I see. You speak of those who came before. I am not surprised to learn that they were evil, for they abused our hospitality and were disrespectful of our beliefs. They were, of course, put to death for their crimes. You need not worry that you will meet them here."} A slight frown crosses his face. Highlight to display spoiler: {"I do not remember hearing of a vessel they carried, but the elders of our tribe may know more."}

He hesitates for a long moment, meeting the eyes of several of his fellows before continuing. Highlight to display spoiler: {"If you and your companions agree to respect our ways, I will grant you one day's hospitality with my tribe, that you may speak with the elders and learn more."} He pauses, waiting for an answer.

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]
Monday February 2nd, 2009 11:47:47 PM

Feyjarl wonders what 'respecting their ways' actually entails, but prepares to back Zeph's play and follow his lead.

He then realises he is again applying the ointment ... 'Weird,' he thinks, 'it's not even hurting at the moment.'

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17]
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 8:57:15 AM

Garret looks back at Zeph and the conversation he is engaged in. Garret continues to move a bit closer to one of the elves with a bow, hoping he will put it down rather than point it at him. He tries to get close enough to speak in a normal tone and he extends his hand in friendship, bowing slightly, and says, "Greetings.?"

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 9:26:11 AM

Axara whispers to Feyjarl "Can we get a crash course on respecting their way?"

Buhl
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 10:09:47 AM

Placing his axe on the ground next to him, and pulling his helmet off his head, Buhl finds a nice boulder to sit down against.
Then, pulls out a bottle of wine and some bread and has a inprompto snack while waiting.

Selemar
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 11:54:21 AM

IN Elvish "Thank you for your offer. We are happy to accept"

Remembering again that someone should translate "He is allowing us to enter for a day, provided we respect their ways. Shouldn't be too difficult"

well, too difficult for me and Lango. I always had a suspicion I would meet my end by being thrown offa mountain by flying elves. Should have been a prophet

Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37]
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 12:26:40 PM

Follows Selemar's lead.

Buhl

What be der ways? Me no want break ways when me no know what ways be.

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 3:03:39 PM

Zeph is about to open his mouth to speak in common to the rest of that party, but then Selemar does it for him, so all is well.

So, Zeph addresses the lead Elf again and speaks in Elven, "We would be honored to speak with your elders about what knowledge they may have on the subject. We are very grateful and humbled by your hospitality. Perhaps, on the way there, you could inform me any specifics of your culture and society we should know about so that we do not offend?" Zeph asks politely.

Then Zeph tells his companions in Common, "I'm asking him to fill us in on any details of their culture as we travel, so we don't step their toes. We will speak with their elders about the pilgrims and the chalice. This should be fun." Zeph explains.

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 6:12:39 PM

Feyjarl smiles at Axara, nodding towards them he jokes, "Probably involves demonic worship, and sharpening the tips of your ears."

He turns away ready to follow the group, but then pauses, about to turn back to Axara to ask her something... Then remembering how angry she gets, he decides to let it pass... He'll deal with it himself.

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 7:15:40 PM

Axara looks at Feygarl "well, I guess, that will allow me to show my horns, my pointed ears, my tail and my hooves."

She gauges his reaction and when he seems to say something and stops, she says "What is the matter? Do you want to say something?"

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 7:19:51 PM

Feyjarl pictures Axara with horns, pointed ears, tail and hooves... He raises an eyebrow, and thinks, 'Quite an image that! A Succubus...'

He looks at Axara, smiling, "Nothing, no. Nothing at all. We'd best keep up with the rest of the group... For all we know, lagging behind might be punishable by death!"

Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37]
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 7:29:23 PM

"For all we know they speak common."

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 9:49:13 PM

"And what if they do?"

Buhl
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 9:59:07 PM

Looks at axara.

You no look good with hooves. You legs too skinny. As fer horns. You head too small. And da tail. Well, yer butt too ......
Thinks better to comment about a woman's rear end. Rubbing his head absently from the last time he made a comment like that.

And lets off a loud, gut busting laugh.

When the group starts moving, he retrieves his pack and axe, hefting the axe over his right shoulder and carries his helm in left hand.

DM Kathy
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 10:52:20 PM

The elf who spoke seems satisfied with Selemar's and Zeph's responses; he nods and signals to the other elves to depart.

As you continue to converse, however, he frowns slightly, and addresses his companions. Highlight to display spoiler: {"Do any here speak the Flatlanders' tongue?"}

An older-looking elf woman steps forward and bows to the speaker. Turning to you, she says in accented but understandable Common: "Most of the People do not speak your words. I learn when I am young. I tell you something of our ways as we travel."

With that, she and the other elves turn and begin leading you up the mountain. They set a killing pace. You keep up well enough when you are still mounted, but before too much longer, those of you on horseback have to dismount and lead your horses over the rugged terrain. (The dog-riders can stay on their nimbler mounts.) On foot, you have to scramble to keep up with the Hawkmen, who show no sign of slowing or tiring. Indeed, the spokeswoman maintains the pace while retaining breath enough to speak.

"I am Kai-Ara-Et," she tells you. She nods in the direction of the Hawkman who did most of the talking. "That is Tam-Tirin, the son of our chief."

"The priests who come before, they do not respect our ways. They say we are pagans because we honor Grandfather Wind instead of their Domi and Alemi. They say we are savages becuase we do not allow weakness. You must not say these things."

"If you meet our chief, you must speak with respect. To us he is...king?" She seems uncertain of the word.

Buhl
Tuesday February 3rd, 2009 11:13:11 PM

Me like dis people already.

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 3:36:37 AM

When Kai-Ara-Et introduces herself to the party, Zeph replies in Elven so that Tam-Tirin can understand, "My name is Zeph. My family name is Illidian. I'm sure my companions can introduce themselves in common and it would be understood. Names usually don't need translating." Zeph says as everyone begins to travel.

When Kai-Ara-Et speaks about the ways of the Hawkmen, Zeph replies as best he can in Elvish while trying to keep his horse, Shadow, on the leash and keeping pace with the interesting elves, "Grandfather Wind sounds like a good patron to honor. Is it not the wind that carries rain clouds for crops and the seasons to change? And it is good for a society to not allow weakness, for it will drag the strong down to try to protect the weak. And the word "king" is adequate. Also "chieftain" or "leader" would suffice." Zeph says, saying the synonyms for king in common.

I'm truly enjoying speaking with these Elves. Perhaps man's society can learn much from our pointy-eared kin. Zeph thinks to himself... and creating in his head another chapter to write in his documentation of The Ventures of the Heroes.

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 9:05:42 AM

Axara notices at Feygarl's look but cannot decipher it "I wish I could read this one mind."

After Buhl is done explaining why she would not look good in a demon form, she smiles and tell the minotaur "Dear Buhl, girls like to hear that their butts are too small. It is a nice compliment as usual men complain about the opposite. "

She giggles after her comments and when is time to introduce herself, she just say. My name is Axara

Hmark
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 10:24:07 AM

Hmark leads Stardancer up the slopes. By the time the introductions are going around, the farmboy is concerned mostly with finding oxygen in the thin air.

"Not <pant> allow <wheeze> weakness <pant>?"

"Guessin' <whoo> no <pant> break?"

Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37]
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 11:26:07 AM

"Disrespect doesn't only count if you say it in their native language" Rollo responds to Feyjarl's question.

When the time for introductions come around Rollo does so. "Rollo Nimbus, emissary of Eberyon."

Rollo follows the others.

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17]
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 11:54:37 AM

Garret rides his dog up the mountain with relative ease while the others lead their horses. When he sees Hmark having difficulty, he says, "Need me to carry you the rest of the way?" He winks to Hmark, trying to lighten the mood.

Selemar
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 12:10:57 PM

"Word of your people's valor and prowess reached us in the lowlands. We would certainly show respect towards the one who leads you. And we tend to respect the forces of the world, including the wind. I am a servant of nature (in elvish, adds the word 'druid'). We all have a healthy respect for mudslides."

"My name is Selemar, and my companion is Lango."

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 5:00:24 PM

Feyjarl rolls his eyes at Rollo, "Sorry Dad," he says sarcastically.

He glances over at Axara from time to time but otherwise continues following.

Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37]
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 6:00:31 PM

Rollo speaks slowly for the warrior to comprehend. "I'm not your Dad, I'm Rollo. You remember Rollo."

Such a poor poor man.

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 6:13:34 PM

"Wow, and also an attempted comedian? So funny and full of his own self importance too, I'm surprised you have the time for us mere mortals."

A slight glimmer in Feyjarl's eye, gives away the fact that he's being anything but serious.

Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37]
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 6:55:08 PM

Rollo is confused further, and speaks even slower this time as he explains. "Ummm...It is not a joke. I'm not your father. It's really quite simple, you see you are a human, I'm a gnome. Human's have human fathers. Gnomes have gnomish fathers. Just as Selemar is an elf. He has an elvish father. Do you understand? It can be a difficult concept if not explained, but don't worry you'll catch on."

The poor man must be an orphan in search of his parents. How tragic, yet noble. Although, I would have thought someone would have explained to him that they would be humans. This insight will probably aid him greatly in his search. It will at least narrow his search down.

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 7:51:09 PM

Axara has trouble containing her laughter. "Rollo, may Feygarl does not know where babies come from. He does know that the stork that deliver the baby look human for a human."
She stares at the two males with a complete facetious look on her face.

Buhl
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 8:04:11 PM

Stares blankly at the little bickering people.
Dis how you want dem new people to tink? Dat you be crazy? Dem may see you weak and toss you off mountain. Straight up. be plenty time later fer dis.

Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37]
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 8:37:50 PM

"Perhaps you are right m'lady, but I don't think that explanation is appropriate in our present company."

DM Kathy
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 11:53:08 PM

Buhl, Zeph and Selemar seem quite taken with their new hosts, and respond politely to Kai-Ara-Et.

Feyjarl, Axara, and Rollo listen to Kai-Ara-Et's explanations, but they have their own conversation going on.

Hmark is simply trying to keep up.

Kai-Ara-Et hears Hmark's question about a break. She gives him a wry smile. "No," she confirms for him. "But I do not think the climb kills you. You are therefore stronger for it."

You climb for a couple of hours before you come to a small mountain meadow. As you draw closer, you realize that the grassy meadow area is surrounded by a sturdy split-rail fence. A few sheep and goats graze within. A lanky adolescent Hawkman keeps an eye on the animals, but turns to face you as you approach.

Tam-Tirin speaks in Elvish Highlight to display spoiler: {"The Flatlanders' beasts should be safe enough here. Rai-Vyrh can watch them."}

Kai-Ara-Et nods and tells you: "Your animals can stay here while you are in the aerie. The horses can go in the pen with the flock. The wolf and dogs must remain out of the pen, but Rai-Vyrh will watch them."

The Hawkmen help you remove saddles and bridles, put out food, and generally see your animals well-situated. When that task is finished, they lead you past the meadow to the base of a steep cliff.

You see at once why you had to leave the animals; the way forward involves climbing a ladder. And what a ladder! It is not like the ladders you are accustomed to--two long poles with rungs set between them. No, this ladder consists of a single long pole, with rungs sticking out on either side like short spines. From this angle, it looks very tall and very flimsy.

The first Hawkmen reach the ladder and climb gracefully to the top, seemingly unconcerned at its height or frailty. Tam-Tirin ascends halfway, then turns to beckon to you. Kai-Ara-Et and a few other Hawkmen wait to follow you up.

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]
Wednesday February 4th, 2009 11:58:06 PM

Feyjarl looks at Rollo and bursts into laughter as he thinks about gnomes giving birth to humans. 'OUCH!'

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17]
Thursday February 5th, 2009 9:07:28 AM

Garret eyes the ladder with curiosity, then walks towards it. He turns back to the others and says, "Look like fun, doesn't it?" Then he heads up the ladder.

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]
Thursday February 5th, 2009 9:20:45 AM

Axara sees the ladder and her first reaction is a gasp of surprise. "I guess it is all about physical feats with these people. I hate climbing. But do I have a choice? Like it has always been the case in my life, the answer is "no""

She looks at the group "How do we make sure no one ends flat as pancake from falling?"

Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37]
Thursday February 5th, 2009 10:21:53 AM

"Simple, don't fall. Rollo says with a smile.

Rollo allows the faster climbers to go first then heads up the rope, making sure to take his time.

Buhl
Thursday February 5th, 2009 10:47:20 AM

Buhl walks over to the ladder and ponders for a moment.
Scuze please. Dis here ting strong nuf to hold me weight? It sized fer you little people. Me tink me might want stay here and hep watch animals rather than break your ladder.
And Buhl backs away, letting everyone else go ahead.

Selemar
Thursday February 5th, 2009 12:41:55 PM

Selemar climbs up and asks the nearest Hawkman whether the ladder would support the minotaur, noting he's a bit big. He waits until no one is looking, and sticks his tongue out at lango down below.

Lango doesn't dignify that with a response. Yet.

Hmark
Thursday February 5th, 2009 1:16:13 PM

On the trail, Hmark gives Kai-Ara-Et a wry smile right back.
"Yes, I'm sure it does," he answers, obviously not believing a word.

The young man eyes the ladder, sighs, and starts up.

"I swear, if there's a bunch of flaming hoops after this, I'm going home."

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]
Thursday February 5th, 2009 1:40:16 PM

Axara jumps at Buhl's idea "Well, it would be impolite to keep poor Buhl all alone by himself so I will wait with him.

Buhl
Thursday February 5th, 2009 2:23:50 PM

No, you go and hep others stay the course. Me gots puppy to keep me company. And me sure some of these fine lads keep Buhl company too. Motioning to some of the Hawkmen.

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]
Thursday February 5th, 2009 4:35:33 PM

Feyjarl makes his way up the ladder, "See you soon Buhl! Don't eat anyone!"

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3  d20+3=20 ;
Thursday February 5th, 2009 7:13:22 PM

Zeph looks up the ladder from the bottom. Then he looks at Buhl.

yeah, probably a good idea. Zeph thinks. "Maybe share some wine with the one watching the flock?" Zeph says jovially.

Then he travels up the ladder with relative ease.

(climb=20)

Buhl
Thursday February 5th, 2009 9:05:07 PM

Buhl goes over next to the Druid's wolf, and plops on the ground next to him.
Pulling out a wineskin and a couple extra bottles of wine, and some jerky. He hands the puppy some of the jerky while taking a swig from one of the bottles.

Looking over at the one tending to the flock, he reaches out with the other bottle.

DM Kathy
Friday February 6th, 2009 12:18:49 AM

Buhl immediately wonders whether the ladder will hold his greater weight. You notice, however, that the ladder can easily support two and even three Hawkmen at the same time, as they scamper up one after the other.

Kai-Ara-Et confirms it. "Ladder holds you, if you go by yourself," she says.

So Buhl's plans to stay with the animals drinking wine are put on hold as the Hawkmen clear the ladder for him.

Once all of you have ascended, the remaining Hawkmen climb up after you. You are led along a narrow, rocky trail, next to a sheer drop that threatens to make your head spin every time you glance that direction. The trail ends in yet another slender ladder; once more the Hawkmen climb nimbly and motion for you to follow.

The next section of trail is easier; it cuts through a bowl-like depression, with reassuringly solid ground on both sides. Next comes another ladder; but as you climb this one you begin to hear the sounds of a village, and smell its campfires. When you reach the top of this ladder, the Hawkman aerie is spread out before you.

A small plateau houses a good-sized cookfire, where several Hawkmen are preparing food. Nearby, others sit weaving, sewing, making arrows. Several ladders lead from the plateau. Some lead to higher plateaus, which in turn have more ladders leading up. Some lead to openings in the face of the cliff, which you realize are Hawkman dwellings. Smudges of smoke mark where other fires burn on higher plateaus.

Several Hawkmen stop what they are doing to stare at you. Most of them then turn questioning gazes to Tam-Tirin, who turns to address the group in Elvish: Highlight to display spoiler: {"I will go to my father and tell him of our visitors. Keep them here until I return."} He then moves off, striding purposfully toward one of the taller ladders, and ascending it with ease.

"We wait here," Kai-Ara-Et tells you. "Tam-Tirin speaks to his father the chief." She and the rest of the scout party stand quietly, apparantly prepared to wait here as long as it takes.

As you wait, curious children approach, staring openly at the strangers in their midst. It is difficult to tell boys from girls; all seem to wear similar clothing and cut their hair in the distinctive tufts. One little mite, catching sight of Buhl, bursts into frightened tears and flees. Rollo and Garrett, being a similar size to many of the youngsters, come in for a great deal of fascinated attention. Selemar, who at least has ears the right shape, seems the favorite of the more timid ones.

You can also tell that the adults are no less fascinated than the children, though they hide it better. They at least make some pretense of going about their business, but interestingly, everyone's business seems to take them to your plateau.

Buhl
Friday February 6th, 2009 3:17:48 AM

For once the minotuar is speachless. He just stands there, taking it all in. Smiles at the people gawking at the group, and when he sees the little tike run away screaming and crying he mutters: Sometimes me wish me was like everyone else. Me no like seeing people scared of Buhl. Buhl not bad person. Buhl not hep what he is. Buhl sad fer little tike.
Turning to the lady who speaks common: Buhl no want little person be scared of him. What Buhl do or say to show him not mean.?

Hmark
Friday February 6th, 2009 8:21:51 AM

More ladders and more walking later, Hmark is quite happy to stop and wait for others to come to them. He notes the minotaur's concern.

"Some kids are just scared of big things," the lad answers Buhl. "The was an inn down the road from our house that had a stuffed stag's head mounted over the door. My little brothers wouldn't go near that door for years."

"Time usually cures it. But right now? There's nothing you can do."

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17]
Friday February 6th, 2009 8:30:18 AM

Garret sits down and invites some children over. He pulls a set of marbles out of his bag and sets a few up on the ground. He attempts to show the children how to play marbles and shoot them across the ground into one another.

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]
Friday February 6th, 2009 10:27:07 AM

Axara smiles. For once, no one is paying attention to her and it is quite a relief to be no one center of interest.

Selemar
Friday February 6th, 2009 12:07:14 PM

Selemar tenatively waves at some of the kids. If they approach, he'll be friendly, and probably share his life's goal of learning how to ride minotaurs. Its quite difficult, as you first need to get on the minotaur, but quite fun if you can pull it off. If only he were braver, and could find a minotaur, he'd try to crep up on it and ride it, but he's not brave enough. He's afraid of heights. Someone with elf like skills and build who wasn't afraid of heights might find it easy if they were brave enough.

Hopefully, he's interrupted by the return of Tam-Tirin before anyone is bucked off. If not, he has healing spells.

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3
Friday February 6th, 2009 12:48:25 PM

(OOC: I hope you are saying all that to the kids in Elven. :)

Zeph is less interested in the young ones and more interested in the structure of the Hawkman society. Zeph looks at the dwelling places and how the jobs are divided amongst the population.

How interesting. I wonder if anyone would take offense if I took notes. Maybe it wouldn't be worth it. Zeph thinks.

"I realize the majority of your society would most likely be hunters. But would there be any who study the arcane arts, or is that forbidden?" Zeph asks Kai-Ara-Et, simply making small talk while the group waits.

Buhl
Friday February 6th, 2009 3:58:15 PM

Drops his axe, then his pack, then his helm, and gauntlets, then his breastplate and vambraces and finally his greaves.

Turning to look over his shoulder at Selemar, he gives the druid a wink and a smirk, then pretends not to hear or see anything. Haunching down so the tikes, should they want to attempt to "ride" the minotaur is able to get on.

Should any of the youngsters take the challenge, Buhl will playfully buck, not wildly, not hurtfully and after a few seconds plop to the ground, on his belly, laughing.

He considers taking a nap.

Rollo smiles at the children.

Perhaps they intend to sell us square shaped gum.

He entertains the rug rats as best he can without knowing the language, and listens in on Garrets explanation of marbles, a game he finds similar to a game the Bearwolves of Grimdwalla Glen play, but they use Multicolored armadillos in lieu of stones. A wondrous game if your not an armadillo, but he could never quite got the hang the scoring system, which was based in a color spectrum beyond his visual capability.

Garrett's marble demonstration seems to go over well; many of the youngsters are interested, and exclaim in their own language when the marbles skip into each other and roll away.

Selemar attempts to get the kids to attempt minotaur-riding, but none of them is quite brave enough. They listen politely, but seem to think the strange elf must be a little mad.

Buhl, for his part, tries to look nonthreatening. The kids approach no nearer, but no other ones run away.

"Arcane arts?" Kai-Ara-Et replies to Zeph. "Not really, if I understand what you mean. Some people are born with the Sight, or the ability to work their will on the world. It is rare with us. Nobody in the village now has the talent."

After a wait of about thirty minutes, Tam-Tirin returns. You notice that, like many Hawkmen, he does not turn around and back down the ladders. He descends as if they were stairs, facing outward, his feet unerringly finding the rungs.

He approaches your group, and speaks in Elven. Kai-Ara-Et translates his words. "The Chief speaks with you tonight after the evening meal. We have a dwelling prepared for you where you may rest and refresh yourselves. Come this way."

She and Tam-Tirin lead the way. The remainder of the scouting party, apparantly dismissed, go their separate ways. You now must climb ladders and balance on narrow trails, with most of the tribe still gathered, watching you. It is a little unnerving.

The dwelling you are led to consists of a large central room with two smaller rooms leading off it. Each room has a variety of large cushions, consiting of woven reeds stuffed with some kind of animal hair, which are apparantly used to sit on and sleep on. The smaller rooms also have urns of water, carved stone bowls, and drying-cloths. The larger room has a basket of fruit, a pitcher of drinking water, and several carved cups.

"I return for you when it is time for the evening meal," Kai-Ara-Et says, and, bowing politely, leaves you.

Monday February 9th, 2009 12:01:43 AM

Feyjarl removes his chest armour and clothing, taking an urn of water he rinses himself down, washing the dirt and sweat from himself and then from his undershirt.

One of the wounds he received from the bandits has opened up slightly, so finding a quiet corner, he pulls a needle and thread from his pack and starts to sew the wound shut.

Anyone looking at (or interested in) Feyjarl's wounds will see the following Highlight to display spoiler: {Your sight is drawn to the multitude of scars on his chest and arms, and you can't help wondering why magic wasn't used to remove them. The wound on Feyjarls' back is about 2 feet long, how whatever caused it didn't sever his spinal cord is a mystery; the scar is almost an inch deep in the centre. The recent wounds seem to be healing better than the old ones as well...}

Once he's done stitching the wound up (it takes him two attempts!), he carefully and somewhat delicately replaces his undershirt and armour.

Hmark gratefully collapses onto a cushion, pulls off his boots, and extends his bare feet outward into the air as he lies back with a long sigh.

The lad lies there for a while, unconcerned with Feyjarl's activities.

"How high up do you think we are?" he wonders aloud.

Axara looks at Feygarl's and shakes her head. Finally, as he puts back his shirt on "I believe you should have a real healer or wizard look at it. It is not healing and this is not natural. "

Having said that she turns away and go look for a room where she can refresh herself away from the males eyes although all of the mhave been oblivious and there is no reason for it to change now.

Following one of the designs from his book on flight he attempts a recreation using bits of wood and copper (melting down the 8 cp he is carrying.)

By the end of his watch he has a nice replica of a simple gyrocopter, which manages to stay airborne for a few seconds before the spring runs out of wind. It won't revolutionize the way society views air travel, but it will make a nice trinket.

Satisfied with his work he packs his tools and goes to sleep.

After air drying he redresses, then washes the clothes he just took off. Hanging them up to dry. He then grabs a couple(4) pieces of fruit and set about cleaning his armor and weapons. Eating the fruit as he does so. Then, he combs his tuft of hair in his head, and then the piece de resistance', he first sharpens, then polishes his horns. Satisfied with himself, he goes over to the pillows and lays across them, getting some much needed sleep before supper is called.

Feyjarl looks at Axara and Selemar smiling, "It's not so bad really. In our settlement, the leader says that the wounds are kept as a reminder of the mistakes made in battles that lead to those wounds being received."

He shrugs. "I know they could be healed up, the gods know how much the large one hurts almost constantly but it keeps my mind sharp enough not to leave my guard down next time. Besides," he pulls out the almost empty ointment jar, "this helps stifle the pain a great deal."

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3

Zeph sits in the corner, rather amused by Buhl's cleaning. Zeph also grabs whatever resembles an apple and cuts it up with his dagger.

After a time, Zeph will follow Rollo to see what he is up to and witnesses the creation of the Gyrocopter.

"Fascinating" is all Zeph can say.

Then he will return to a cushion, take out a pen, and begin to write what he has witnessed throughout the day: everything from the structure of the society, to how they walk down the ladders, to how they treat their guests, and even a note about ones born with the "sight". Zeph will also draw a picture of Tam-Tirin to the best of his ability.

When all that is done, Zeph will lay on a cushion and pull an obsidian-colored short sword from his pack and begin to search for where the blade is balanced with his fingers and will reflect on the past and what actions must be taken in the future. Zeph will probably fall asleep while playing with the blade.

DM Kathy
Monday February 9th, 2009 11:18:39 PM

You variously rest and refresh yourselves as you await the evening meal. When Feyjarl reveals his scars, both Axara and Selemar urge him to seek healing for them. Whether their words will penetrate the strange fog Feyjarl seems to have about his injuries is anyone's guess.

Buhl bathes and samples the fruit. Rollo crafts a strange mechanical device that can actually glide across the room before it hits the ground. It is delicate, however, and too much playing with it will mean repairs.

Zeph jots notes and sketches of what he has seen, then snoozes a little. Garrett also enjoys a nap. Hmark doesn't quite nod off, but seems content to just sit and relax.

The sun has nearly set when Kai-Ara-Et comes for you. She has not changed her snug-fitting black clothing, but you can tell she has added more decoration. Her ears now sport colorful twists of wire and beads instead of the simple hoops they had before, and some kind of design has been painted on one cheekbone. She bows to you. "Follow me," she says.

She leads you upward. As you climb, you can see the glow of a large fire on a plateau above, and hear the murmur and hum of dozens of voices.

When you reach the plateau, you see it is even larger than the one below. You can see the steep escarpment where Shadow Mountain continues up into the clouds, but there is plenty of room between it and the ladder back down. Three large fires burn in the intervening space, and various cooking smells waft over the area.

"This is our...festival place," says Kai-Ara-Et, seeming to have trouble translating something into Common. "We use it only for special times."

She leads you to an area near one of the fires, where several Hawkmen (male and female) sit on cushions. You recognize one of them as Tam-Tirin. Near him is an older man, whose jewelry is the most elaborate you have seen on a Hawkman. He is also wearing some kind of sleek cap made of red, white, and black feathers. It doesn't take much of a leap of logic to recognize the chief.

Several vacant cushions sit near the chief's party. You pretty much figure out they are for you, even before Kai-Ara-Et gestures toward them. When you are seated, the meal begins. Platter after platter of exotic-looking meats and vegetables is brought to your group, each with specialized utensils for conveying the food from the platter to your mouth. The meats are difficult to recognize; there is some kind of poultry (duck, perhaps) and something that tastes kind of like mutton, but not exactly. The vegetables are easier to identify; there are peas and beans and some kind of squash. The spices are unfamiliar but tasty, although a couple of dishes are pretty spicy for people not used to that kind of thing.

Other than making sure you eat your fill and are happy with your food, the chief's party does not engage you in conversation during the meal. Any talking will apparantly take place after everyone has eaten.

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]
Monday February 9th, 2009 11:49:13 PM

Feyjarl tucks into the meal, thanking their hosts for the wide variety of foods and the superb use of spices in them. All the time hoping that this isn't some 'fattening the lamb' stage.

He toasts the hosts, wishing them good health and prosperity.

Buhl
Tuesday February 10th, 2009 2:55:37 AM

Samples everything including the spicy stuff which is quickly washed down with 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 and finally a 5th glass of wine.
Smiling he waves his hand in front of his mouth.
Then, eats alot of the vegetables. Even though you would think that a cow like person would be a vegetarian, and for the most part you do see Buhl eating alot of fruits and vegetables, he does partake openly of meats. And rather enjoys them at this meal. Nodding to the servers and the cooks, should they make their presence known.

After his fill, he leans back, patting a full stomach, with a smile on his face, and enjoys a couple glasses of wine. and then savors his last refill, drinking it slowly while he waits for the formalities to begin.

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17]

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]
Tuesday February 10th, 2009 9:23:16 AM

Axara shakes her hed when she hears Feygarl macho logic explanation about the scars. "What is wrong with having a beautiful body?" pointing to herself. "Scars are not the nicest thing to look at or touch."

During dinner, she looks at the dishes carefully and force herself to eat it, only finishing her dish if everyone else does. this is way too much food. I am going to put on weight. I better do some exercise after dinner. I cannot believe I am to eat all this meat. I wonder if I will still fit in my armor and clothes after this meal.

Selemar
Tuesday February 10th, 2009 9:25:42 AM

Selemar tries to copy his hosts eating style (If they use hands, he uses his hands; if they use spoons, he uses spoons; if they use chopsticks, he uses his hands). He'll ea in silence, if that seems the norm, but try to show he's enjoying the food

Rollo follows Selemar's lead using what ever technique seems appropriate to savor every morsel offered. HIs face speaking volumes as to his enjoyment of the meal.

Hmark
Tuesday February 10th, 2009 2:15:26 PM

Like the others, Hmark does his best to imitate the eating style of the Hawkmen. The meal goes fairly well, although at one point the archer stops. For several minutes, the lad remains nearly motionless while sucking in long, shallow cooling breaths. Hmark's watering eyes and sweating brow also indicate he's fighting an internal battle.

Hmark drinks about 6 straight glasses of whatever cool liquid is available as nonchalantly as possible, under the circumstances.

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3

Zeph eats slightly faster than the others, although still trying to remain polite. He is clearly eager to get along with the quest, despite his interest in the unusual culture.

I know patience is a virtue, but there are people I must find and kill in this world before I get too old. Zeph thinks to himself. Perhaps playing with the Onyx-colored Short Sword awakened some memories of the past.

Zeph does stop to make a mental note of the ornaments and paintings on the bodies of the hosts though.

When the meal is finished, Zeph will sit, smile, and wait for the leader of the Hawkmen to speak first.

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]

OOC: this conversation happens before the meal starts OOC

Feyjarl walks alongside Axara on the way to the meal. "My body was never beautiful, unlike your own. There are women in the camp I live at that are... almost as attractive as you and they still wear the scars of their battles. The only one who does not have scars is Zhang, but that's because she never gets hit, she is an astonishing warrior. If I had the choice of removing scars or leaving them, I am not sure which I would take as I am used to them now."

"However, that's academic really as we are not allowed to remove the scars of our battles... I knew a woman at the camp that was greviously wounded in battle and was healed by a kind soul. Unfortunately the healing removed the scars," Feyjarl paused, as the memories came back to him as fresh as if they were just yesterday.

He looks at Axara, deep in her eyes, then looks away, "When she returned to the camp and retold the tale of what had happened, Zhang saw that the scars were not there and killed her."

"So, you see, even if I wanted to remove the scars, I would forfeit my life doing so." Feyjarl realising that the conversation had turned a little morbid, smiled. Walking along beside Axara still, he put a hand lightly between her shoulders in camararderie, "So tell me about you. I'll bet your life has been full of surprises and the usual ups and downs, how did you get involved with this motley crew?"

You acquit yourselves well at the feast, though Buhl and Hmark have trouble with some of the spicier dishes. When the last platter has been cleared away, the Hawkman chief turns to you. Somewhat to your surprise, he addresses you in accented but understandable Common.

"Strangers, you are welcome to our aerie. I am Tzith-Ara-Hela, chief of the People. My son Tam-Tirin tells me that you inquired of the travelers who came her twenty years ago. Know that these travelers were disrespectful to the People, that they disparaged our customs and our gods. They were warned, but persisted in their actions.

"The People do not tolerate interference from outsiders. The blasphemers were put to death, and their ashes cast from the mountain.

"Tam-Tirin also says you sought a vessel. I do not recall such an item, though it has been a long time. Can you describe it?"

'Is Zhang a monster for doing that...?'

The scar on his back starts to get painful, he stops thinking about what Axara said and concentrates on what's being discussed around the table...

Then, returning to the subject at hand, Zeph confirms what Rollo stated in elven if any words need translation. You never know when one of the younger elves may know something.

Zeph lends his drawing ability to Rollo if needed.

DM Kathy
Thursday February 12th, 2009 12:16:37 AM

Tzith-Ara-Hela nods at Rollo's description. "I recognize it now. Yes, there was such an item. We have it still. For what purpose do you want it?"

You are vaguely aware that this conversation, held in Common, was being translated in murmured Elven to the other important Hawkmen seated near the Chief. Now, one of them rises. He is rather handsome, or would be if he wasn't scowling at you. You notice that he has an eagle tattooed on the back of his left hand.

He addresses the Chief in Elven: Highlight to display spoiler: {"My Chief, why do you speak with these flatlanders? What does it matter what they want, or why? Dismiss them, and let them be content that they keep their lives."}

Tam-Tirin also rises. Highlight to display spoiler: {"It has been many years since the Great Betrayal, Ka-Inen-Des, and the People have recovered their strength. Perhaps the time has come to treat with the flatlanders once again."} He waves a hand in your direction. Highlight to display spoiler: {"Know that these flatlanders approached openly, with no attempt to hide themselves. They asked directly for what they wanted. They kept up with us on our return up the mountain, and did not complain of the pace. They have shown strength, honesty, and respect. We do ourselves no harm by treating with them."}

The Chief listens impassively, his black eyes watching you. He nods, indicating that he has heard the arguments, but makes no other acknowledgement. "For what purpose do you require this item?" he asks you again.

DM Kathy
Friday February 13th, 2009 12:30:43 AM

The Chief nods at Rollo's explanation, but does not speak. Around him, the debate begins.

Each high-ranking man or woman speaks their piece. They speak in Elven, but Rollo and Selemar are able to provide whispered translations to the rest of you. One faction, led by Ka-Inen-Des (the handsome one who scowled at you), declares that the foreign vessel belongs to the tribe by right of conquest, and should not be yielded up to flatlanders, whatever their problems at home may be.

A smaller faction, led by Tam-Tirin, argues that the vessel, having been taken from outsiders, should be returned to outsiders. At the very least, they argue, you should be allowed to purchase it.

The largest group expresses a kind of dubious neutrality. They express doubts as to your character, your strength, your honesty. On the other hand, they don't have a lot of use for the strange foreign vessel. On the other other hand, they hate to just give it away.

Finally, the Chief holds out his hands. He speaks in Common, to the visible annoyance of many of his subjects. "Hear now the words of your chief. It is true that the foreign vessel belongs to the People, by right of conquest. We do not yeild to strangers what is ours by right." Many of the Hawkmen begin looking smug at this point. "However," the chief continues, "any of the People who demonstrate a need could have this thing for the asking." Puzzled looks all around. "Therefore," the Chief continues, "we shall give these outsiders the opportunity to prove themselves. To be accepted as honorary members of the People."

You get the feeling that it is a serious breach of etiquette to interrupt the Chief. Some of the Hawkmen can barely restrain themselves, but manage not to say anything. They look daggers in your direction, though.

"In the time of our grandmothers and grandfathers," the Chief continues, "outsiders were sometimes given such opportunities. After the Great Betrayal, the custom was discontinued. I belive it is time to resume. Your Chief has spoken."

Apparantly, that is the last word, although many look as if they wish they could protest. The feast begins breaking up, and the Hawkmen begin leaving to seek their beds.

The Chief approaches you for a private word. "Know this," he says, his eyes intent. "Proving yourselves to the People will not be easy. The tests are hard, and may prove fatal. I will not force you to undertake them. I will tell you, though, that passing the tests is the only way to earn that which you seek."

He looks you over. "Will you accept this challenge?"

<raising one finger> "Accept the challenge, and maybe get killed"
<raising another> "Try to find and steal the bowl, and probably get killed"
<raising a third> "Forget about the whole thing and go home....and everybody definitely gets killed"

The lad sighs philosophically.
"Hey, I always wanted to be a Hawkman," he replies glibly.

Could I live with myself knowing that if something happens to my sisters or mother because of the book? No so I will do it."

"I will do it. Chief, can you tell us what it will take for us to become temporary Hawks?"

I hope I get some cool tattoos like they got. Or maybe some sweet piercings. This could be fun. Zeph thinks.

"You are too kind, chief. We will work as a team to become one of the people. The outsiders in the towns surrounding the mountain could learn from your society." Zeph says, getting really excited at the promise of new experiences.

Zeph also smiles a bit evilly in Ka-Inen-Des's direction. Prize through conquest eh? I can swing with that. Zeph thinks

(OOC: [sarcasm] DmKathy- You gave Rollo credit for knowing elven, when in reality he does not and it is I, Zeph, who knows the language. But I shall forgive you. [/endsarcasm] :)

You agree to the challenge, although many of you are curious about what it entails.

"There are three tests," the Chief tells you. "The Test of Hardship, the Hunter's Test, and the Test of Will."

He does not elaborate.

You are left to get what sleep you can that night. The next morning, Kai-Ara-Et comes to fetch you, accompanied at a distance by what seems like half the village. "Those of you who wear armor," she says, "probably want to leave it here today. It is safe." With that, she turns and starts climbing.

Up, up you go, past the festival grounds where you dined last evening, up steep trails and fields of scree. The pace is similar to yesterday's, but fortunately the journey isn't as long. Kai-Ara-Et stops after about 30 minutes. You see that you are next to a swift-flowing mountain stream, which widens here into a pool about 20 feet wide. Looking across, you see the Chief, Tam-Tirin, and Ka-Inen-Des waiting on the other side.

"This is the Test of Hardship," says Kai-Ara-Et. "You must swim across. The water is cold; it freezes the blood and stops the breath. Yet you must swim. Swim or be swept away." She gestures. You can't exactly see it from here, but you remember the steep climb you had to get up this far. "You may make whatever preparations you like, and begin when ready." She steps back, joining the other spectators.

[Game mechanics: By the rules, clothing does not impede a Swim check, so only disrobe as much as you'd like for roleplaying purposes. :) Armor makes Swim checks more difficult, and is not recommended. When you enter the water, make a Fortitude save (DC 15) to withstand the icy waters. If you fail, your Swim checks are at -4. You must make 2 Swim checks (DC 15) in order to reach the other side. If you fail a Swim check by 4 or less, you make no progress, but lose no ground. You can simply keep trying until you succeed. If you fail a Swim check by 5 or more, you are pulled downstream, and must make an additional successful Swim check in order to regain your lost ground (in other words, 3 total successful checks are needed if you fail a check by 5 or moe). If you fail 2 Swim checks by 5 or more (without making up the lost ground in between), you are swept out of the pool and downstream. What happens next will be revealed in my next DM post. :)]

Without warning, Buhl strips off everything.

Then cannonballs into the water. Making a huge splash, getting anyone near the bank soaked.
Coming up for air, he looks back at the others, smiling.
Water fine.

Then, turning to the other side, Buhl smartly starts swimming. Normal, broad strokes. Not rushing but not going slow either.
Upon reaching the other side he pulls himself out of the water, and once completely out, and near a few of the spectators (not the chief) Buhl shakes like a dog, removing excess water from his body and hair. Not embarrassed about his nakedness. Seeing some of the others staring at him, Buhls non chalantly speaks up: We brought to world naked. We leave naked. Buhl no shame in natural look.

When offered a towel he dries off, and waits to be given something to cover himself with. And watches the others come across.

After Buhl's display of strength and fortitude, Zeph turns to his frailer companions.

Zeph looks at Rollo, Axara and Selemar, and whispers to them, "The Chief said to 'make any preparations we want'. I say what we lack in strength we can make up for in wits and teamwork. I suggest we tie a length of rope around us, each attached together, much like we were climbing a steep cliff. We can tie one end to a tree and throw the other to Buhl perhaps. Then we can all make it across together, stronger swimmers in front. What say you all?" Zeph suggests, smiling at the idea of bending the rules and taking the Chief's words literally.

If his companions agree, then Zeph will do what he said with the rope, and only stop if one of the Hawkmen tell him to. If the rest of the Heroes do not agree, then Zeph will swim next, shedding clothes except for his leather breeches. Zeph will tie himself to a stump either way so he does not get swept downstream, unless the Hawkmen say he cannot.

Garret turns to Zeph and says, "I don't think that's what they intended, but I'd prefer not to be swept away. I'm with you." If they are permitted, Garret will help tie himself to Zeph and a stump.

"Here goes nothing," Garret says out loud, before mumbling, "I wonder what I'll see down the river."

Garret jumps off the bank, trying to propel himself as far as he can from the bank in one leap. He hits the water and surfaces, shakes off the cold, and starts pumping his little arms and legs. To those on the shore, it looks more like he is trying to splash and scare the fish away than swim. He continues to flail about, then starts quickly flowing down the stream. In moments, he passes out of the pool, still flopping around, and heads down the stream.

[No armor check penalty]

The lad waits for a ruling on the rope. If no one complains, he'll wait his turn to tie himself off, and then jumps in. If they do complain, he jumps in without it.
He surfaces with a screech, and begins flailing madly at the water. The brown haired lad makes no progress, and starts losing ground before gritting his teeth and powering back to the original starting point. But by that time, Hmark's teeth are chattering uncontrollably, and he cannot maintain the pace.

Without a sound, the archer is swept downstream (either into the pool or caught by the rope).

The suggestion of leaving his armor doesn't parse, shouldn't a true knight be able to do all tasks in his armor?

Oh well, I best not offend our hosts.

It is the customs of the people that must be honored. It has been a years since Rollo last removed his armor(Prestidigitation keeps the need for baths at bay) and the feeling is very odd to the gnome. His body feels extremely light and flexable.

When he reaches the lake his listens to the task before them, easy enough.

The Test of Hardship lives up to its name.

Well, not for Buhl who strips down, jumps in, and swims across as if he does this sort of thing every day. And who knows? maybe he does. You haven't known him that long.

Zeph suggests using a rope to help one another cross, and begins to make preparations. Surprised murmurs from the Hawkmen, but nobody tries to stop you. You jump in and begin to swim. The current tugs at you, but because you are tied off, you don't lose as much progress each time you lose your battle. You therefore reach the other side, exhausted but triumphant.

Garrett also uses the rope. You jump in and give it your all, but the current is merciless, and even the rope isn't enough to help you regain your lost ground. Buhl is able to haul you ashore, however.

Hmark's struggle against the current is similar to Zeph's. You would have failed but for the rope. However, you do barely manage to get yourself across the river and onto the opposite bank.

Selemar scorns the use of the rope, jumping in and trying to swim on your own. You therefore have nothing to prevent you from being swept out of the pool. Down the river you tumble, collecting a few bruises, before your progress is stopped by strong, wiry arms wrapping around your chest. You are hauled out onto the bank by a pair of tatooed Hawkmen, who set you on your feet before turning their attention back to the river.

Axara also tries to cross without the rope. You actually make a pretty good accounting of yourself, but you ultimately lose the struggle. You, too, go hurtling downstream, to be hauled out by the Hawkmen rescuers. They stand you up on the bank, and at least one of them gives your wet chemise a look of masculine appreciation before returning to his post.

Rollo reluctantly divests himself of his pots and pans, and summons a giant squid to carry him across in style. Cries of excitement and a lot of conversation from the Hawkmen. A few of them are laughing. Is that a good sign?

After you have made your attempts, the Hawkmen show you a place upstream where you can cross the river on stepping stones, and return to where you left your clothes. They provide numerous drying-cloths to for towelling off.

When you are dressed and ready to go, Kai-Ara-Et leads you back down to the village. She looks concerned. "You do well," she tells you. "But some of what you do is not traditional. Ka-Inen-Des says this proves you are always Outlanders, not of the People. He talk to the Chief. I do not know what the Chief thinks. Maybe he likes that you help each other and use magic from the gods. But maybe he thinks like Ka-Inen-Des."

Tuesday February 17th, 2009 9:25:24 AM

An angry, frustrated and tired Axara is being pulled out of the river by the hawkmen. Between the coldness of the water and the small shirt clinging to her like a second skin, she leaves little to the imagination. She is even too tired to smile when she noticed that an Hawkman male appreciate the freee view. "So there are some hot blooded males in this realm after all " she says to herself.

She walks slowly toward the place to get change. Once she arrives there, she looks around, wishing that Kiel was here "he would have found a place for me to get changed in privacy."
As no one seems to care to help her, she takes the bull by the horn and go see Buhl. "Buhl, I want you to stand there, you back to me and between me and everyone else. And do not look back until I tell you ."
Using the massive frame of Buhl as a shield, she takes off her wet blouse as fast as she can and put back her robe on. "I will put the armor on once the shirt is dry"
She tries to be as fast as possible, hoping no peeping Tom get a free show.

As they walk to the village, she aks Kai-Ara-Et "What should the people like me who failed the first test do? Are we disqualified? Should we quit the Hawkmen village?"

Hmark

Hmark drags himself up the far bank, clinging to the rope for all he's worth. Teeth chattering uncontrollably, the lad lets himself be led back across the stream and dries himself off. He regains just enough of his senses to catch Buhl's eye and surreptitously motion for Axara's wall to take a tiny step to the left.....

"Well, THAT was fun," he remarks sarcastically. "Would it be too much to ask for 'hunting' to involve a bow?"

"We respect the wisdom of the chief and the opinions of the Hawkmen. I would be interested to discuss the value of teamwork versus autonomy with the Chief if he so desires. As far as the magic, to not use what gifts have been granted to us would be equal to cutting of one's own foot. Unorthodox perhaps, but nonetheless useful." Zeph says, trying to reason with Kai-Ara-Et, hoping to get a word with the chief about the Heroes.

Zeph also dries himself off and replaces his Mithril Shirt and packback.

DM Kathy
Tuesday February 17th, 2009 10:42:14 PM

You return to the Hawkman village in time for the noon meal. This time you do not dine at the festival ground, but on a smallish plateau just above the home you are using. Kai-Ara-Et appears to be your hostess; she introduces you to several Hawkmen (male and female) of all ages, all of whom seem to be related to her in some way. And none of whom speak Common.

Lunch is some kind of porridge with corn, nuts, and some sort of bean. The texture is odd, but it is flavorful and filling. Fresh fruit is served also, and plenty of cold mountain water.

Kai-Ara-Et is a little surprised at Axara's question. "You do not fail, brave one," she says. "It is true you do not swim across, but you face the challenge bravely and fight well against the current. The Chief and the elders agree that you and Buhl pass the Test of Hardship." She turns a sad smile to Selemar and Garret. "You two do not do so well. Tam-Tirin argues in your behalf, I think, but I do not think he succeeds. But you still can try to prove yourselves in the other tests. The Chief makes his final decision when all three tests are done."

She selects a piece of fruit before explaining, "They argue now over Rollo who uses magic, and Zeph and Hmark, who fight well like Axara, but rely on the rope. I think nothing is decided until after the Hunter's Test. Maybe not even then."

She explains more about the Hunter's Test. "You depart tomorrow. You stalk and kill game. You decide what you hunt, and where." She gives you an assessing look. "You do not know the game trails, and where the best game can be found, but still I think you do well at this test." She grins at Hmark. "And yes, you can use your bow. Do what you like this afternoon, but do not leave the aerie. I will come for you when it is time for the evening meal."

Wednesday February 18th, 2009 1:00:00 AM

After dressing in his dry clothes, and returning to the tent, Buhl sits down on the pillows with a bowl of the porridge and a armful of fresh fruit and eats fully, washing it all down with some of the fresh water.
Buhl know wine taste good but need water too. Water is life.

After eating he drifts off to slumber-land until awaken for the evening meal.

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]
Wednesday February 18th, 2009 8:55:29 AM

Axara is nimbling on a couple of fresh fruits, visibly in a somber mood. When Kai-Ara-Et tells her that she did not fail the test, she cannot believe her ears. "Are you sure that i did not fail? I remmeber vividly being rescue by Hawkmen after failing to cross that river. So Hawkmen value effort as much as outcome. This is truely an interesting concept."

"what a change with everything I dealt with where it is only about the outcome and never about the process. We could all learn a lot from the hawkmen."

After Kai-Ara-Et leaves, Axara addresses the group. "For the test of the hunter, I will be even more useless than usuless as I believe we should only use magic in case of emergency. Given the fact that I cannot track anything nor that I am any good with a bow, I will follow the group, hoping to create the less amount of distraction, unless I need to be used as a bait, which is a job I have a certain level of experience."

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17]

Garret says, "Well, that stinks. They don't give us the rules and then tell us that we've broken them. Oh well, we'll see what's next. I'm not sure they value creative thinking at this point, however."

"As for hunting, I can certainly sneak around with the best of them, but that may not be what these people want. How would a hawk hunt? Well, it would sneak around. I wonder if we're supposed to hunt together or individually on this one? Based on the last test, we're going to be evaluated individually."

"This could get interesting. I don't think we can have a backup plan, however, as I don't think we're going to have an option to steal the darn thing, as we don't even know where it is. But I think we should all keep our eyes open as we move around during these tests to see if someone spots this brazier. If everything else fails, that may be our only option to save everyone else."

An evil grin slides across his face.
"Wonder what they'd say if we brought back a bunch of dead hawks?"

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3
Wednesday February 18th, 2009 1:11:47 PM

Zeph listens to Kai-Ara-Et's words carefully and quietly, rethinking his original ideas of what the challenges are truly testing.

When the group of Heroes gets alone, Zeph listens to Garrett's words. "I like the way you think. If worse comes to worst, we may have to just take the Brazier and run. Although I seriously doubt it will get to that point, its always good to keep our eyes open." Zeph says

Then Zeph thinks about the tests. "So, they may not value teamwork or creativity. Or they might, I still don't know. But they do value honesty and hard work. Perhaps my original assessment was wrong. We are different and we think differently than these people, that much cannot be avoided, but that does not make us any less effective at our tasks. I would argue that to the chief and the elders. What would they say if you shot a doe with a Magic Missile Axara?" Zeph says that last part with a wiley smile.

Then Zeph considers the upcoming challenge. "Kai-Ara-Et says that we decide what we hunt and where we hunt. But what about how we hunt? Would they consider using Lango's nose cheating? None of us seem to have any tracking ability otherwise... except maybe Selemar. I think if we decide to hunt individually, I will climb a tree and wait... like being in a deer stand." Zeph says, trying to think of as many ways as possible to succeed at the upcoming challenge, and also wondering how the Hawkmen will observe them.

If I need to hunt, I will kill some bugs or spiders. Probably spiders. I have spiders. That is why I conjure swarm of them. To give me a sense of control over them. Which I know I do not have. But it makes me feel good to think that I have it. So where was I? Ah yes. I will not kill a doe. "

Her point poorly made, the sorceress looks at her confused companions.

Variously strategizing, worrying, and resting, you while away the afternoon. The evening meal is also taken with Kai-Ara-Et's kin. It is more varied and filling than the noon meal, but not nearly as elaborate as the festival meal last night.

As you dine on fowl and vegetables and flavorful flat bread, Kai-Ara-Et explains more about the Hunter's Test. "It is similar to what our own young ones must do, to become adults," she explains. "You must provide meat for the aerie. You may work in one group, or many smaller groups. Most young ones prefer to hunt in one big group. It improves their chances of returning with big game, which brings prestige.

"The Test of Hardship," she continues, "is about being brave, and fighting hardship. A good effort is enough. But the Hunter's Test requires success. Once you leave the aerie, do not return without game."

She looks around at you, ready to answer any questions you may have.

"Yes, I have a question. A few actually. Firstly, are there any stipulations on how we are to obtain game and what methods we can use to find it and strike it down? Secondly, will there be some of your people watching us? Lastly, how long do we have to complete this task" Zeph asks, hoping that Lango's nose and Axara's sure-strike magic missiles are not forbidden.

Then Zeph thinks a bit about what could be the easiest game to find. Then it hits him like a thunder bolt and his eyebrows raise with delight. Its so simple as to what the easiest game to find is: the game that will hunt him. "One more question... are there any animals or beasts that are openly aggressive to humans and elves and such? Aggressive to the point in which they will either actively hunt or kill one of us on sight for their own food." Zeph says, with a bit of an eager and slightly malevolent smile.

Heck, I'll be the bait if no one else is up for this hair-brained idea. Never wanted to live dull. This could be fun. Zeph thinks to himself.

After the fine meal, and the fine wine, Buhl sits there, listening and learning about the next test.

Me no tink dees people eat Owlbear, or Purple Worm or Dragon. Me tink dey might eat Bear or Goat or any other normal animal dat live on mountain. Me tink we should find dat kind of animal for hunt. Member, dey say food for aerie. Meaning we must bring back food to eat for dees fine people. Dey already say by any means we decide. So, let get rest and leave at first light. Me no want to fall in dark on ladders going down cuz it dark and me no see rung.

Will tank the nice lady fer meal and conversation. Grabbing a couple pieces of fruit Buhl gets up and makes his way back to the tent where he goes into one of the side rooms, cleans up real good, washing, then hanging up to dry the rest of his clothes, pulling on a pair of skivvies to cover his "parts", and then plops down onto the pillows and drifts off to sleep, dreaming about burying his axe into the head of a dragon, and then sitting on its corpse, drinking wine with Imod.

"Types of game..." Kai-Ara-Et muses at Rollo's question. "Well, there are goose and partridge and quail and other birds. Not very impressive but easy to find. There is small game: rabbit, fox, squirrel, opossum. Not very impressive either, although you could bring in several. Larger game is deer and elk, mountain goat and bighorn sheep. Largest of all is bear, but bears are very dangerous."

"There are no restrictions on how you hunt," she tells Zeph, "save that you do not kill more meat than the People can eat before it spoils. We do not go with you, but some of the People will go near where you go in case of trouble." She seems a little puzzled by your next questions. "If an animal in the area proves to be dangerous, the hunters gather together to take it down. There are no such animals near the aerie at this time. We would not allow such a dangerous situation."

To Axara's questions, she says, "There is no rule against using magic in the hunt. All of the animals of the mountain are cousins to us, and gifts from Grandfather Wind. It is customary to thank an animal for yeilding up its life to the People. But none hold a place of special reverence; all may be hunted."

The evening passes pleasantly, and the Hawkmen seem to expect that you will want to turn in early. Your rest is uneventful.

Kai-Ara-Et returns to fetch you just before dawn, accompanied by the Chief, Tam-Tirin, Ka-Inen-Des, and others whom you are beginning to recognize as high-ranking Hawkmen. The Chief gravely wishes you good luck as he watches you depart.

Zeph is slightly disappointed at the lack of dangerous game to hunt. I was thinking to strike down an Owlbear or maybe a couple of Worgs. That would impress me, I hoped it would impress them. Oh well.

But then when Kai-Ara-Et says that the bears are quite valuable to the People, he perks up a bit.

When the group is taken out into the wilderness the next day, Zeph will suggest with a bit of excitement, like a young boy on his first hunt, "So. What say you guys that we try to track down a bear? It can't be too hard, just look for caves, and follow Lango's nose? We can also kill smaller game on the way in case we don't find the big one though."

Then Zeph wonders if waiting in a tree is truly a good idea. "As far as strategy goes. Perhaps we should put about 20 meters between each of us and move in a fan across the area? Effectively combing everything. Garrett and myself could probably go ahead by about 60 meters and stay hidden and quiet so that the sound you guys make wont scare anything away before we get a chance to ambush something. Also, I think I may climb a tree and get a survey of our surroundings every 200 meters or so. What you guys think? I won't be offended if ya'll don't like my plan." Zeph says with a smile.

If the group agrees, then Zeph will walk ahead of the group by 60meters or so and keep quiet, if he comes across anything, he will signal the rest behind him to be quiet. If it is large and dangerous, Zeph will walk back and tell everyone what is ahead. If it is small and hard to hit, Zeph will signal Axara to walk quietly over and strike it with a magic missile. If its a deer, then Zeph will try his aim with his bow from the shadows.

You discuss strategies and decide to go for broke--bring down a bear. Zeph's keen senses help Selemar and Lango with tracking. You do locate some small game, but you leave it aside for now, intent on a bigger prize.

It takes a while, but you do eventually find bear sign. You track the creature for a way, finally coming across it near a mountain stream. It raises its head and sniffs the air, apparantly alert to your presence.

[OOC: this probably won't be a full-scale combat, but I need a general strategy. I know some of you made "to hit" rolls in your previous post, but I decided not to use them since you wouldn't have done enough damage to kill the bear. This time, everybody gets a chance. :) ]

He looks at Axara, "Got any snare spells or slows? IF we do that then we could split the group and attack from two sides but not opposite for obvious reasons! Hopefully that way the bear will run one way and then the other giving us enough time to do the damage required to take it down."

She looks at the other members of the group with complete disdain and shakes her head as she unleashes magic missiles toward the poor animal. She looks quite upset at her actions and will be a foul mood all the way back to the hawkmen.

Since Zeph is probably well hidden from the bear (what with the hide and move silent checks), he will move slowly to the group to listen to the plan.

Zeph listens to the other's ideas on how to take down the bear and wihspers, "Well, I can do good damage either by surprising the bear, attacking first, or by flanking it with Feyjarl... so I will try to stay hidden whenever Axara makes the first strike. Then I will shoot it along with Hmark with my bow and rush the bear with Feyjarl if it doesn't go down with the first wave."

Then Zeph moves to a position between Axara and the bear, but off to the side a bit, so that if the bear charges her, then he can pop out of his hiding place and shoot it, hopefully with the bear not noticing his position before he fires.

The position would be like this:

Bear ------------------------- Axara, Hmark, Garrett, Feyjarl
-

Zeph

Hit AC 17 with composite long bow (-dex if bear didn't notice my position) Damage = 12. Or 7 if Sneak attack didn't work.

You approach the bear. It is on the small side, as bears go, but quite large enough to hurt you if it decided to.

You have only seconds to formulate a plan, but you are already pretty good at working together. Axara opens with a volley of Magic Missiles. Zeph and Feyjarl follow it up with arrows. Garrett's sling misses, and Hmark and Rollo never even have a chance to make their attacks. The bear drops to the ground, dead.

Now, of course, you need to figure out how to get 600 pounds of bear back to the aerie.

Buhl, who has been strangely quiet, is able to help carry the bear. He needs some assistance from the stronger members of the party, but you are able to manage.

As you start back toward the aerie, you realize that you have only a general idea where it is. Coming out, you were very intent on tracking your bear, and you realize that you didn't keep very careful track of which way you came.

Rollo and Selemar, with Zeph's help, are able to retrace your steps, but it takes times, and more than a few wrong turns. It is late afternoon by the time you return, and your rumbling bellies are reminding you that you never stopped for lunch.

You return in triumph, however, and the response of the Hawkmen is everything you could have hoped for. You are cheered, applauded, and slapped on the back. An impromptu feast is got up in your honor, held not on the festival grounds, but on the large lower plateau (the first one you came to). It is less formal than your welcoming feast, and much more boisterous. Drink flows freely, and there is music and dancing. You are urged to dance by eager young Hawkmen (of the opposite sex) who seem to enjoy your company.

You can party as late as you like, but you are aware that one more Test remains.

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3
Wednesday February 25th, 2009 11:38:35 PM

(OOC:This is a post mainly for role-play purposes. I included a bit about each one of you if you would like to read it.)

Before everyone goes to sleep, Zeph sits down with his quill and pen and begins to document the happenings of the adventure. How half the group passed the swimming test and how the Hawkmen were thrilled at the idea of eating bear meat.

Then, Zeph pauses to reflect and remembers his old stepfather, Marko Clemso, way back in Jarlwolf.

The old man must be worried. I should write him a letter. Zeph thinks as he pulls up a fresh piece of parchment.

This is the contents of the letter, would anyone care to read, Zeph will show it to them, trusting his companions with his inner thoughts.

Dear Marko,

Hey, this is Zeph. We are currently on a mission to gather materials to destroy the evil threatening the Valley. I cannot be too specific on what we are seeking or how it will be used, but I just want to tell you that this is of grave importance. The quest to save Cinnamon Valley has taken us far - we are currently on the southern slope of Shadow Mountain, attempting to negotiate with the well-known Hawkmen elves. They are friendly, but very traditional, and we are having to pass trials to earn their trust.

So far in our adventures we have chased down a thief, explored a monastery, discovered and killed a hapless traitor, fought mercenaries sent after us, survived mudslides, visited Giant Town, and now we are striving to become honorary Hawkmen. It has been a mix of emotions of an adventure. I have fought with my companions and have learned to trust all of them over time. They seem to trust me somewhat now, especially since they allowed me to handle the finances and distribution of loot. It's fine though, numbers make ssnse to me anyways.

My companions are diverse and each interesting in their own way. Of the original eight who were called by Dulcet to solve the problem, only four remain: Myself, Axara, Selemar, and Rollo. We have had other companions who have either died or had other obligations. Owain, Kiel, Chardorl, and Sebastian each came and went. Newly we have Hmark, Garrett Goodbarrel, Feyjarl, and most recently a minotaur named Buhl.

Here I will mention a sentence or two on each of my companions so you may know whom I gather my experiences alongside with.
Hmark is a good fellow, a Human archer only but a year or two younger than myself. He was also in the guard for some time as well and he named his bow Red. He joined us a long time ago, so he might as well be one of the original eight. He has proved a nice companion ever since.
Selemar is a bit of a quiet elf. I don't know from where he hails from, but his powers over nature are both useful and impressive.
Axara, oh Axara. Domi broke the mold with this one. I think she may be a farm-girl who's trying to be anything but a farm-girl. In truth though, I respect and understand the sentiment- it is difficult and sometimes necessary to distance oneself from the past. Her arcane powers are as spontaneous as her emotions. In truth, I like her companionship.
Rollo Numbus. The Gnomish Cleric of Ebyron If this group would have a designated leader, I suppose it would be him. Although in truth I think that he and myself have a sort of unspoken co-leadership deal. He has wisdom, and I have intellect- I propose ideas and he tells me which ones are good by his actions. Don't get me wrong, each person in the group has an equal voice, its just that's how it ends up going most of the time.
Garrett Goodbarrel is a Halfling trained in the martial arts in a monastery. He carries nothing with him but a staff, a sling, and a backpack with bits of food. Its quite opposite from myself- I seem to keep everything an adventurer could need from grappling hooks to disguise kits. Garrett used to run mail for the monastery if I remember correctly. He is genuine and friendly, imagine his surprise when he entered Giant Town.
Feyjarl Talvalin wields a wicked-looking double bladed sword, much like Kiel did. He is strong and I think of half-elven origin, but I dare not ask since he has only been around for a month or so. Speaking of which, time seems to all flow together when on adventure. Anyways, Feyjarl has a confusing past, something to do with a woman named Zhang, ever heard of her? Feyjarl's cloak is red with a black emblem I don't remember seeing. He seems genuine and has been willing to help in our cause for the Valley, so I don't question his intentions.
Buhl is our most recent companion, and I don't know if he intends to stay or not. He is a minotaur of great strength and thus is a great asset to have around.
Then of course there is me: the thinker dare-devil who has a late date with fate. Who woulda thunkit eh?

On a personal note, I have yet to discover who or what entity brought about the destruction of my parents so many years ago, and thus my revenge has yet to be enacted. Although these quest I have undertook for the valley currently acts as a diversion from what I must do, it is not so bad as it provides me the experience and worldliness I may need to enact my revenge. I know you disapprove of my need to kill those who murdered my biological parents, but I will offer this in consolation: I will do good with my life. Although I will need to do evil at some moments, I say that it will be for the good of society in the end. Some choices are difficult- would you kill one to save a hundred? A thousand? What about to complete a mission of unknown importance? I am frustrated sometimes at the lack of progress, but am happy most of the time living the way I do.

Well, wish me luck Marko... dad.

Love,
-Zeph Illidian

Then Zeph wraps up the letter, which has grown to several pieces of parchment, and folds it into an envelope. Then Zeph takes some wax from a candle and seals it. He writes TO: Marko Clemso, Tannery owner, Jarlwolf. FROM: Zeph Illidian. on the front in big letters.

In the morning, Zeph will ask Kai-Ara-Et if there is any known way to communicate with the outside world through writing. Perhaps carrier hawks? If so, then Zeph will use that way to deliver the letter, if not, then he will wait to deliver it through some other means. Perhaps to send it back through a mail service on the main road?

Then Zeph has one last thought: I wonder if the Hawkmen would allow me to take some of the bear's teeth to make a necklace with? And he smiles as he lays down to rest.

Feyjarl and Axara, each for their own reason, decline most of the festivities and retire early.

Zeph asks about the Test of Will. "The People are of the sky," Kai-Ara-Et explains. "Flatlanders become dizzy and frightened when asked to climb high, or move along narrow places. If you are of the People, you are not afraid of high places. This is what we Test tomorrow."

Zeph writes a long letter to his foster-father, and asks about sending it. "We have little contact with outsiders," Kai-Ara-Et says, shaking her head. "I do not know how it can be sent."

Rollo parties with gusto, pausing to present Kai-Ara-Et with his little flying machine. Fortunately, you still have Comprehend Languages up, because she is so moved she apparantly forgets how to speak Common. "But this is marvelous!" she exclaims, looking it over. "And it really flies! Look!" She shows the toy to the other Hawkmen, who likewise exclaim with delight. "Such a mark of the gods' favor," she says in amazement. "It seems the Chief was right to welcome you, and give you a chance to join us. I will tell him of this."

The next morning, you get off to a later start than on past days. Perhaps it is because of last night's festivities, or perhaps the Test of Will isn't expected to take long. For whatever reason, you have time for a leisurely breafast and a little relaxation before Kai-Ara-Et comes for you. She leads you on a narrow path that traverses the side of the mountain, leading to a part of the aerie you have not yet visited. Looking up, you see that the ladders here are especially high; the passages between homes especially narrow. The Chief, Tam-Tirin, and Ka-Inen-Des are all there, along with several other Hawkmen.

"This is the Test of Will," the Chief explains in Common. Behind him, you can hear the murmured translations to Hawkman Elven. "You must each climb this ladder to the red cloth, then cross to the blue cloth. You must then come down the other ladder--facing outward, as the People do, not backing down like a Flatlander." He glances around to make sure all of you understand.

It's easy to understand. Looking up, you can see the course with no difficulty. Just a little jaunt up and down ladders. Actually doing it is going to be the tricky part.

[OOC: Climbing the first ladder is not difficult; no check required. When you reach the top, you will be very high up with little to support you. Make a Will save, DC 12. If you fail, you are nervous being so high, and take a -2 penalty for all remaining checks and saves. Crossing to the other ladder requires two Balance checks, DC 10. If you fail either of them, you do not fall, but you must make a DC 12 Will check to keep trying. If you fail the Will check, make another one, DC 15. If you fail this second Will check, you freeze in place and have to be rescued. If you (eventually) succeed at your Balance checks, you must make one final Will save (DC 12) to climb down the ladder facing out. If you fail that save, make another one, DC 15. If you succeed, you steel youself to come down facing out. If you fail the second Will save, you chicken out and back down the ladder like a Flatlander.]

Garret smiles at the ladders and says, "Oh, this looks like fun!" He quickly scampers up the first ladder. He stops at the top and looks out over the valley. "Wow, the view here is even better than from back at their village. This is wonderful. I think I can see my old house." He points and gestures, then smiles and winks at the others.

He quickly tags the red cloth, then moves across to the blue cloth, being careful not to fall. He tags the blue cloth, then faces outward, preparing to head down the ladder. He pauses a moment as he looks out over the valley, then steels himself and almost runs down the ladder, skillfully sliding the last half of the ladder with ease. When he hits the bottom, he smiles and waves, then gestures back up the first ladder saying, "That was neat. Who's next?"

Axara is silent the entire morning as the Hawkmen explain the last test. Right before he is about to try and do the test, Axara approaches Garret and gives him a kiss on the forehead. "This is for good luck ..... and to apologize for my rudeness last night "

She watches the halfling succeed in the test and decides to go next.

She climbs the first ladder with not problem. When she is at the top, she makes the mistakes to look down and freeze (-2 on all check from now on). She seems to hesitate and start moving. Halfway between the two ladders, she freezes again. She tries to moves forward but she can. She concentrates and tries to move forward but she cannot do it. She put herself in a fetal position and starts crying for help.

After being rescued, she looks at the group and the Hawkmen with a sad and resigned look. 'I am sorry I failed you. I guess I am good at that. I will leave the aerie immediately "

He straddles the ladder, prepared to go down facing outward. A gust of wind straightens his hair out behind him. [Will 11, nuts]

Zeph climbs the first ladder and looks down as he gets to the top. His knees begin to shake. It would be so easy for a gust of wind to blow and knock me down... Zeph thinks. (Failed first will save. -2 to everything)

Luckily, Zeph has particularly good balance from his experiences years ago in making quick getaways after robbing a few nobles blind. He crosses the ladder with little trouble, although being afraid of the possibility of wind knocking him off. (Success on balance checks)

Then it comes to walking down another ladder facing outward. Zeph looks down and feels a slight bit of vertigo, but smiles when he sees the Hawkmen looking up at him. He gives a little wave as he begins descending down.

When he sees Axara's sad face at failing the test, he pats her on the shoulder to console her. "It's not so bad. At least you didn't break any rules on the swim test like we did! Ha!" Zeph says, trying to lighten the mood.

DM Kathy

Your results from the Test of Will are mixed. Garrett, Rollo, and Zeph manage to get through the course with minimal difficulty. Hmark and Feyjarl make it most of the way, but in the end are not able to come face-out down the ladder. Axara doesn't even make it that far, freezing in place and needing to be rescued.

Buhl's larger size puts him at a distinct disadvantage, and he is not able to complete the task either. Selemar does not even try, although it's possible he will get another chance. [Post you results over the weekend if you can, Bill.]

Once the test is complete, you return to the festival grounds. The leaders of the Hawkmen begin the debate. Predictably, Ka-Inen-Des feels you have not earned honorary Hawkman status.

"The Flatlanders have proved their unworthiness," he argues in passionate Elven. [Kai-Ara-Et murmurs a translation to those who do not understand.] "They are cowards, so weak that they needed rope for the Test of Hardship. They failed the Test of Will. We should cast them out, and speak no more about it."

"You exaggerate, Ka-Inen-Des," Tam-Tirin replies. "It is true that they used unorthodox means in the Test of Hardship, but the whole of the test had not been explained to them. They did not all fail the Test of Will. And they triumphed in the Hunter's test."

"But not one of them passed all three tests," Ka-Inen-Des says. "None has earned the right to be one of the People."

"I say the one known as Zeph has passed all three tests," says Tam-Tirin. "The cow-head man, Buhl passed the first two tests, and failed the Test of Will only because of his tremendous size."

"He still failed," says Ka-Inen-Des. "And the other one used rope for the Test of Hardship."

"Rope or no, he fought long and bravely against the current. Also, the elf Selemar made a good showing. The woman Axara, small Garrett, and the quiet one, Hmark passed two of the tests, and exhibited great determination. As for the mage Rollo--who could deny one who weilds the power of the gods?"

The Chief holds up his hands for silence. Then he turns to you. "Do you have anything to say on your behalf?" he asks in Common.

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]
Friday February 27th, 2009 9:10:11 AM

Axara says nothing, her head buried under the hood of her robe, as she is still mulling from her panic attack at the top of the ladders.

"I am not worthy of anything! Give it to me to dispoint when they need me "

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3
Friday February 27th, 2009 10:54:19 AM

Zeph first looks to Rollo to speak on the group's behalf, knowing that the Gnome has the ability to sway people's opinions with his words.

Zeph turns to Rollo and says, "I will translate what you say into Elven." Then Zeph looks at the rest of the group of heroes and says, "We can either let Rollo speak for us or we can each say our own part. Either way, I can translate for you. I suppose I will speak last."

Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37]
Friday February 27th, 2009 3:10:30 PM

(Rollo would have cast Comprehend Language for this meeting)

"Eberyon has granted me the ability to understand their language, so no need to translate." Rollo thanks Zeph for his offer. "As far as speaking for the others, if they agree with me then I'm happy to let them have my words, but they should speak up if they disagree. I have yet to be granted the power of mind reading."

Rollo approaches the Elders, "We have taken your tests, followed the rules presented to us, and some of us, I included have passed them all. If you wish to deny us your acceptance it is yours to give, or deny, but do not hide behind loopholes, and semantics. We have honored you, honor us with your honesty."

Hmark
Friday February 27th, 2009 3:24:02 PM

Hmark idly scratches an itch behind his left ear.

"Well," he responds. "I'd point out that their kiddies already do most of this stuff before they get tested. We came in stone cold and did pretty good for never having seen this stuff before."

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3  d20+7=18 ;
Friday February 27th, 2009 8:52:41 PM

Zeph smiles at Rollo when he says Comprehend Language will do just fine. "Ok then, just trying to be helpful." He says.

Then Zeph begins to look around to see if he can spot where the Chalice of the Gods may be... just in case the group would need to grab it and run. (Spot=18)

When Rollo is done, speaking, Zeph will say to the chief and the elders. "We submit ourselves to the wisdom of the elders and the people's will..." Then Zeph pauses and looks around at the onlooking crowd. He says the next part slowly, audibly, and in elven, "If the debate is whether we become one of the people or not, then perhaps they should be asked their opinions... if they wish us to become one of them." Zeph says gesturing to the crowd, hoping to get a good reaction.

The power of the mob. Every civilization must learn who truly holds sway in society. Zeph thinks with a wry smile.

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]
Sunday March 1st, 2009 4:46:45 PM

Feyjarl simply waits, saying nothing but thinking to himself, We'll either make it or we won't, there's little point doing or saying any more than has been said. Technically speaking becoming one of them is not even relevant to us. We've all jumped through your hoops so give us temporary status, give us what we want, we'll leave and not trouble you any further. They could even revoke our status after that. Not like I'll be coming back any time soon.'

DM Kathy
Sunday March 1st, 2009 9:58:16 PM

The Chief listens as those of you who chose to speak have your say. He pauses for a what seems like a very long time.

"Hear now the words of your Chief," he says in formal Elven. "The human known as Zeph and the gnome known as Rollo have passed the three tests." Quiet murmurs from the other Hawkmen, but no dissent. Ka-Inen-Des looks mutinous, but says nothing.

"The other Outlanders are held in high esteem by the two who succeeded," the Chief continues. "And, though they did not pass all three tests, none failed so badly as to be a disgrace to the People. If Zeph and Rollo will vouch for the strength and courage of their companions, we will adopt all of them as honorary members of the People. This is the Chief's decision."

There are further formalities, of course. Ka-Inen-Des lodges what sounds like a formal protest. Zeph and Rollo have to formally vouch for the rest of you. Your initiation consists of drinking some kind of concoction out of a bone bowl. You aren't sure what it is, but it packs quite a kick. You are not required to be tattooed or pierced, although these are now available to you should you so choose.

And of course, you can claim the brazier known as the Mercy of the Gods. Tam-Tirin fetches it himself, and hands it over with a smile.

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]

Anyone approaching Feyjarl about tattoos or piercings gets a polite but firm NO.

Axara eyes reaction about the idea of a tatoos or piercing is a clear indication that she will never do it.

As Feygarl also refuses tatoos, she sarcastically tells him "Why no more tattoos? Are you afraid they will cvlash with your branding?"

Once the group has the brazier, Axara proposes "To avoid putting all our eggs in one basket, here I go again with a farm analogy, Rollo should not be the one carrying the brazier. I think that Zeph or Hmark would be good candidates. "

Rollo[AC:21 HP:37/37]

"Shall we start back home?"

Hmark
Monday March 2nd, 2009 3:28:11 PM

Axara's comments sends the archer off on a tangent.
"mmmmmmm. Fried egg slapped onto some toasted bread, yummy"

Hmark will take the brazier. He passes on tattoos and piercings.

"Let's get out of here," he agrees.

Zeph AC19 HP33 HeroesLoot3
Monday March 2nd, 2009 3:47:31 PM

Zeph smiles at the Chief's decision. "Your decision has indirectly affected many people for the better. I will be back to visit, if that is allowed. Perhaps I will wear an earring as a sign that it is me and not an impostor when I return. For the rest of my group, I can vouch that they have talents which are useful and diverse. Axara has magic flowing through her veins, Selemar can commune with nature itself, Hmark can hit a bullseye from 70feet easily, Feyjarl is a whirlwind in battle, and Garrett is honest and good natured adventurer. If these qualities are valued by the Hawkmen, then they too should be at least held in high esteem." Zeph says in Elven.

When celebrations begin, Zeph gladly accepts a loop through his left lobe and allows the hawkmen to go hog-wild with his right ear, but will make suggestions as to what his style is: black or silver, and anything that looks deadlyish. He will also kindly ask for a simple blue or green spiral tattoo spanning his right shoulder area and perhaps a cool flame decal wrapping around his left leg, fully enjoying the revelry of the Hawkmen.

If the group doesn't want to wait up for such procedures, then Zeph will agree to leave ASAP... and settle for just the one earring and maybe a small tribal tattoo on his shoulder.

Then Zeph turns to Axara, "I hear that tattoos on the small of a lady's back is all the rage back in New Ellenia." Zeph says with a smile.

Axara [AC: 17 HP 24/24]

As Zeph is getting inked and hints that Axara is missing on an opportunity, she whispers to him "Have you ever seen tattoos on an old hag? I will not always be that beautiful so why making things worse."

She stops and gives him a wicked seductive smile ' .. plus if I really want to impress a certain someone, I can use my magic to put a temporary tattoo, ANYWHERE I want ...

Feyjarl Talvalin [AC:18 .. HP:29/29]

Feyjarl doesn't respond to Axara's comment about branding as he has no idea what she is talking about.

Rubbing some ointment into his back, he prepares himself to leave the hospitality of the Hawkmen along with the rest of the group.

Garret Goodbarrel [ AC:19 HP:17/17]
Monday March 2nd, 2009 8:36:27 PM

Garret smiles when the chief announces his decision and thanks him when the celebration starts. When talk comes of tatoos, Garret is quite interested and will see about getting a tattoo that will clearly identify him as a member of the hawkmen.

DM Kathy
Monday March 2nd, 2009 11:02:36 PM

You cannot go anywhere before morning, at any rate, so those of you who want tattoos and piercings can get them done--provided you can endure the procedure.

Zeph opts for a simple loop through his left ear, and winds up with one made of braided copper. In his right ear is a silver-and-black slash that looks vaguely like a lightning bolt. He gets a green spiral on his shoulder, and an orange-y flame climbing his left calf.

Garrett winds up with a hawk tattoo on his left hand.

The rest of you decline decorations, at least for the moment. Brazier in hand, you retire for the evening. Axara suggests that someone other than Rollo carry the Mercy of the Gods, as he is already carrying the Codex.

The next morning, Buhl surprises you by announcing his intention of remaining with the Hawkmen. They have much to teach, he explains, and he is anxious to learn. He will return to the civilized world when the time is right; perhaps he will see you then.

You therefore bid farewell not only to Tam-Tirin, Kai-Ara-Et, and the other Hawkmen you have befriended, but also to a member of your party. Several of the Hawkmen see you off, escorting you down to where your animals await you. Notably absent from that number are Ka-Inen-Des and the Hawkmen who seemed to support them; they are nowhere to be seen this morning.

"Farewell," Kai-Ara-Et tells you. "May Grandfather Wind protect you and speed you on your journey."

Zeph leaves the Hawkmen with a burning feeling on his right shoulder and his left calf, but is glad for it.

"Farewell. I plan to return to the Aerie to pay a visit within the year... if all goes according to plan." Zeph says in Elven to the friendly Hawkmen.

When the group gets back on the road, Zeph will quietly play with his new earrings. "Rollo, can you help me in the upcoming month or so to make sure this doesn't get infected?" Zeph says.

Then Zeph begins to think about Ka-Inen-Des. He wouldn't ambush us... would he? Zeph thinks.

"Everyone stay alert... I don't like any possibility of being ambushed... even if its a small one." Zeph says to the Heroes.

Zeph will take point position, unless there are any objections.
